+Intro+
In the grim darkness of the 41st millennium there is only war. Imperium of Man, once strong and proud, now is slowly crumbling, whole regions of space are lost to the horrors that lurk in the darkness of the void. Sector Deus is just one of the thousands of Imperial provinces that form the front line in the war to defend Humanity itself. Corruption from within and aggression from without threaten it. But the Emperor sends us hope. High Lords of Terra commissioned a Chapter of Adeptus Astartes, finest warriors Humanity has ever seen, to defend this region of space. They are the last line of defence that hold Age of Ruin at bay. They are the Ghosts of Retribution and this is their tale.

Last session your distant brothers in Silent Guardians Chapter suffered a severe defeat at the hands of Chaos Space Marine warband on the distant world of Xataria. After intense battles that lasted for days they lost almost three squads worth of brothers after Chaosites brought up an ancient evil war machine, known as Defiler. Silent Guardians were forced to retreat in a hurry. The Chaos warband in question from descriptions oddly reminded you of the Red Giants.

When you offered help, they replied:
>Dear brothers, while normally we wouldn't bother your noble selves with this kind of request, however as you reached out to offer your help, we will accept it. Battle in Xataria put a stain on our honour, but we are planning to return there to reclaim our dead and to seek out the enemy. They may be already gone or they might be waiting. We will be sending half of our 4th Company with armoured support to hunt down and kill the Chaos Defiler. If any of your warriors want to join this hunt, you can send them our way. Chaos never sleeps. Signed, Akarmos, acting Chapter Master.

I would recommend we dispatch them. Follow Silent Guardians' lead but not slavishly. Suggest tactics to our strengths etc. that the Silent Guardians won't be familiar with.
Other matters on the agenda. Don't need to be resolved now for for reminders' sake.

>Tau Prisoners: Set them free on some dead world and let them call for help. Get method of communication to open dialogue with them and assurance they won't enter imperial space here again. Get to know the prisoners better, share history etc. to try and build an understanding and a rapport
>Tartarus: Over the coming months the Revenants and our Tartarus infiltration net should be keeping up updated in how the Tartaran politics changes. What captain or captains fills the vacuum left by Alepros. Where did Alepros' assets go, etc. But most critically they should be looking for news of Tesalia D'anger and/or Deidara Ursus.

+++Triot investment options+++
Averon Bird approaches the Chapter with options regarding the potential investments in the world of Triot, as instructed some years before.

+Rebuilding effort+

Triot has suffered massively under the Ork heel and it shows. There's a whole planet to rebuild and there are many ways to get involved.

1. [Rebuild Tria] [Investment: 200W to 800W]
Tria was the original capital of Triot, located on the northern coast of the inland Leytian Ocean. Tria was a vast industrial city and a triumph of infrastructure, with rails linking it with all corners of the continent and enormous suburbs that stretched over a hundred miles from the city centre, with sleek overhead monorail lines allowing millions of workers easy access to the industrial centres. Tria was ruined and gutted by the ork invasion and was infested with greenskins for over 200 years before the city was cleansed with incendiary bombings and armoured flame vehicles in the closing stages of the Liberation of Triot. The people of Triot have begun to rebuild, but Tria will not reach its former glory for decades if not centuries.
+++
Profit would return after 15 years and would come in a lump sum of [155%-1d10%] of the total investment.

2. Utilise the workforce

As Triot is demilitarising, soon a significant part of the population, which was pressed into armed service, will be demobilised and will be looking for a job. We could arrange for creation of new industries on the planet, which would employ their population.

Investment options:
1. [Consumer Goods] 100W, 1d10W per year return
2. [Material extraction] 120W, 6W per year return
3. [Promethium extraction] 300W, (20-1d10W) per year return

3. Buy up assets and transport them back to Varda

A lot of industrial machinery has been left unused on Triot and even now, after the Liberation, it will be decades before anyone will start utilising it. We could potentially buy it cheaper, thus funding their rebuilding efforts and also acquiring useful technology for ourselves.

Equipment on sale:
1. [Mining Complex (Level I): 40W]
2. [Manufactorum: 70W] x2
3. [Imperial Starport: 35W]

Given our ... recent troubles with all kind of xenos AND considering the state Triot is in, i would like to have some investment in any kind of military arms, especially small arm, so the planet and its neighbors can better defend themselves and we can ramp up production if we have to. Even if its ....less profitable on pure wealth grounds alone.

strongly against selling the starport, it might be needed for either military or civilian purpose and having one is better than needing one.

You will receive a report from Morbid in the next few months. The mission was a mixed success.

Akarmos was leading the mission personally, he was very pleased with our Chapter joining them. Upon return to Xataria, united task force started scouring the world in search of the accursed Defiler and soon found it. In the end, it seemed that its foul brothers have left it for dead. However, it was a trap - a squad of Traitor marines and a sizeable force of heretical slaves ambushed Silent Guardians and Ghosts of Retribution.

Captain Dreidor made a hard decision:
1) He ordered Morbid to launch orbital bombardment of the area, ending the battle in one decisive strike, even though not all marines managed to get out (d10 Silent Guardian and d10 Ghost casualties)
2) He ordered Tempestos to engage in the front (Chaplain must roll WP 52 to get out unscathed from the hard battle), only X marines die in the engagement from both of the Chapters, depending on his success or failure
3) He ordered to drop Tarantula turrets and withdraw to regroup (3d10 Tarantulas are lost, you get to reroll 2 of your dice)
4) Send in Predator Annihilator to hunt down the Defiler (75 vs. 45x2 contested roll, Defiler gets additional successes from any 8s rolled), 2d5 marines die from both Chapters

Which roll are we making? the 75 or the 45x2? (and how does 45x2 work, best of two?)

Otherwise I'm leaning towards
>2) He ordered Tempestos to engage in the front (Chaplain must roll WP 52 to get out unscathed from the hard battle), only X marines die in the engagement from both of the Chapters, depending on his success or failure

Why use an orbital strike when you can use a mace?
>>
>>4389746
>Which roll are we making? the 75 or the 45x2? (and how does 45x2 work, best of two?)
Annihilator rolls under 75, Defiler twice for close combat and weaker, but still dangerous cannon, either of them will inflict hits, but ultimate outcome is decided by the number of cumulative successes on either side.

>Utilise the workforce
I say we deploy some of our serfs to the planet to assist with a screening process. Not in a leading role but in a more advisory one to help the fledging administratum as well as speed the process as demilitarization is complicated and can lead to a lot of problems a war torn planet pushed to the brink doesn’t have experience in. The process should involve allocating work fair enough towards industries adjacent to their role as soldiers.

I think those too battle scarred to return to civilian life should be formed into new regiments specialized in Ork warfare. Last thing we need is ptsd ridden soldiers to become the backbone of new criminal organizations on Triot because we let them fall through the cracks.

With thunderous clash Tempestos resists the daemon-engine, but even his powerful fate is not enough, infernal construct collapses his defences, and closes in for the kill. Two nearby marines jump to his defence, but Defiler stomps on Avidor, leaving just a wrecked power armour and kicks Lairion 30 meters into the air. It then smashes Tempestos' Crozius out of his hands, grabs him and rips off his legs. It continues to laugh as it does this, as if caught in some weird frenzy. Suddenly, as if caught off guard, it stops maiming Tempestos and starts rushing off the battlefield, as if it would have recognised what a precious captive it managed to capture.

What happened then?
1) Tempestos, half dead, comes to senses. He is familiar with the foul lore of Daemonology. He knows the Words of Binding, a powerful, but unholy technique, that he never thought he would need to use. He could use this knowledge to unbind the daemon of the construct, destroying the defiler. He could still save himself, but maybe damn his soul in the process...
2) Tempestos decides, that he cannot be taken alive at any cost. He will start fighting, most likely dying in the process (roll d100, under 10 to damage Defiler, above 55, he dies).
3) Dreidor realises that he cannot let this happen, the Chaplain must be saved! Fourth Company will make it's mark! He takes nearby three squads of Space Marines and leads them in a charge. [3d10 casualties] Dreidor rolls his Tactics (49+5) to survive the charge he leads and Weapon Skill (49) to kill the Defiler)
4) Tempestos gets taken prisoner... Who knows, maybe we will get a chance to save him later?

Though at this point I would also suggest that we be sending our Predators and Thunderhawks after the damn thing as well. Land Speeders armed with meltas as well, melt its legs if they can.

>Emperor, forgive me...
Tempestos whispers before opening his mind to things he never thought he would have to use.

Tempestos will use three Chaos runes, Words of Binding, reversed. Pick in what order he will use them and which of the two aspects he will use.

>Sarthor [Bind - Release] This rune, if successful, will ensure release or binding of the daemon.
>Ahhaba [Absorb - Deflect] This rune will deflect or absorb excess warp energies.
>Norghar [Brand - Unleash] This rune will help to establish the control on the daemon or to unleash him, maybe even all the way back into the warp from the material reality. Middle option, between those two is the dangerous one.

If he would want to unbind and then bind the Daemon again, he would have to pick the first rune twice[Release, then Bind]. However other options are possible.

Potential hosts (if Binding):

1) Tempestos (+0)
2) His armour (-30)
3) His Rosarius (+30)
4) Sorion, nearby marine (+15)

Base Willpower: 52

>>
>>4389840
>Ahhaba [Deflect]
>Sarthor [Bind]
>Norghar [Brand]

Is my thoughts. In my mind Tempestos should focus on distracting, harassing, and tying up the daemonic spirit so that our other marines can disable the physical machine more easily.

Thoughts?
>>
>>4389843
Note: Binding only works after unbinding, if there's a free force to bind. So you might as well then use Ahhaba [Deflect] twice.
>>
>>4389844
Ahh noted, didn't know we could use the same twice.

In that case
>Ahhaba [Deflect]
>Ahhaba [Deflect]
>Norghar [Brand]
>>
>>4389848
Or even more, you could use Brand thrice, possibly taking control of it in it's current form or significantly distracting it. Deflection/Absorbtion is more oriented on the sorcerer doing the summoning himself. So without unbinding, branding is the strongest option, for the record.
>>
>>4389840
>Sarthor Release
>Sarthor Bind
>Sarthor Release
>1) Tempestos (+0)

We release him from the daemon engine, bind the daemon to Tempestos and them immediately release him again, which should make him unstable enough to disintegrate him for a few centuries. The exorcist chapter does something like that with every recruit.

Could work. Please not that he would then be saying the third Rune while possessed.

So a summary of my thoughts on investments

>2. Utilise the workforce
>Investment options:
I'm rather loathe to invest in permanent assets that are so far away from our other holdings. We can't commit troops to keep them defended and Triot is not in a good enough state that we can be confident in its security.

>3. Buy up assets and transport them back to Varda
Looking at these one by one
>1. [Mining Complex (Level I): 40W]
We're already mining our known resources at full capacity on Varda. Additional mining would only drain our resources faster.
>2. [Manufactorum: 70W] x2
We're not currently extracting the kind of natural resources that utilised by a manufactorum. A Processing Plant could be used to process the local medicinal compounds, but not a manufactorum.
>3. [Imperial Starport: 35W]
Would facilitate the formation of another city and pump up the population. However as we learned from Macedonia's crime issues this can be as much of a problem as it is a benefit.

>1. [Rebuild Tria] [Investment: 200W to 800W]
We have 200w to invest. I like this option because it offers a good rate of return and doesn't involve any permanent investment in assets. Admittedly, it does take a fair while to pay out but we can be patient.
From a more narrative perspective it also helps provide a good basis for Triot itself to redevelop its local industry.

>>4389840
Regarding this, my final vote is for >>4389855 , but using Tempestos' rosarius instead.

I'll also repost

>+Rebuilding effort+
Are there other options available that create longterm employement for exmilitary people if it they are less profitable on a purely monetary basis. This is as much to avoid them joining gangs or petty warlords. Farm communities maybe?

Ofc otherwise i think we should not get tied down to another planet, our assets should be concentrated rather than spread out all over Deus, so can monitor and respond better.

i am against buying up assets, as these assets should serve as both a reminder what Triot was and might become again aswell serving as a base for a continued rebuilding.

>Defiler problems

IF the defiler is temporarily distracted during the daemonbinding shenanigans, is it possible for some other marine to meltabomb/krakgrenade it kinda point blank?

[Roll Willpower +30] [82]

+++Investments in Triot+++
Proposed investment: 200W
Time until payout: 15yrs
Expected returns: [155%-1d10%] of the total investment

Averon Birg also suggests two more things, that he could do.

> Adjust contractual obligations which would remove the insurance aspects. This would increase the profit factor by another +30% on top expected returns. However Triot co-investors most likely would expect the Chapter to provide at least limited protection to the planet for the duration of the contract.

> Leverage investment from other Imperial Factions, using our clout. Averon suspects, that he could raise up to another 500W from Adeptus Sororitas, Chartist Captains, Nestorium and the Merchants League. However we wouldn't be able to keep all of those profits (we have to offer them a reasonable deal) and we would be taking on all the risk. However, he expects, that even after paying all of that out, Chapter would be left with additional 50W to 200W and if all goes well, all of the involved factions would become more trusting of the Chapter. On the other hand if something goes wrong, we would lose face.

After some time with these weird xenos, you start to understand them better and even develop a limited ability to imitate their emotions and behaviour, allowing you a better degree of communication. Eventually you convince them to reach out to their leadership. They explain that they cannot do it until they construct a communications relay device or recover one from one of their listening outposts (that's why they are trying to get you to travel to that world beyond the Imperial borders). However if you will give them tools and peace of mind, they think that they could reconstruct the relay within d6 years or so. You drop them off on a small swampy world of Kratau and ensure that there are no ways for them to get off that rock, but that local atmosphere and fauna is not too deadly. You even go as far as to leave them a few lasguns for self-defence and all the tools they need. Do you leave some marines with them or not?

You are the perfect counter-balance to Luigi in terms of risk taking. Sorry, I already took his post, but if someone else supports your claim, you can go for a more hostile investment strategy.

+++Defiler+++
>Sarthor [Release] - Success
>Sarthor [Bind] - Success
>Sarthsdsdofrsor [xxxxxx] - Failure

Tempestos utters warp-sensitive runes that take up a life of their own even before they leave his lips... Daemonic machine shudders and roars as it lights up with an unholy halo of reddish radiance as its vile essence is drawn from the confines of the war engine.

Defiler takes a few steps and collapses, releasing wounded Tempestos, who immediately grabs Rosarius and uses his own blood to summon the half-embodied warp plasma form towards it. Weakened and disoriented, daemon shrieks, but it cannot defy ancient words of power and it is push, smashed, crushed into the confines of Rosarius.

The holy nature of the object burns daemon, scarring it and driving it mad beyond the limits of what even that inhuman psyche could take. Tempestos collapses on his side, a darkened and scorched Rosarius smoking from the energy that it had to withstand.

Your men take a step back, aghast with the sight of sacred Rosarius being so debased and by none other, than a Chaplain of the Chapter.

36 Corruption.
Please roll 3d100.

As the rumours spread, Chapter Morale is decreased by 1 to down to Very Good[5/6]. However brothers feel more sorry for Tempestos than angry at him.

>Destroy it
You could do it outright, but then the tie which connects Tempestos to the Dark Rosarius could kill the Chaplain as well (Chance equal to Corruption, roll d100).

Alternatively, you could hide it and try to later unbind the Daemon, cutting the bond between him and Tempestos. However that will require engaging in sorcery again. Your call whether it is worth it.

Can we get other exorcists to assist in the deed?
Hull has been trying to get into getting rid of daemons if I remember correctly.

Tempestos in the end does it in front of the whole Company, standing at attention on a hillside of Xataria, overlooking the darkening skies and its two moons. He brings the Dark Rosarius in front of everyone and places it atop a rock, fixing it in place. A brief prayer, a sign of aquila and he smashes it with his Crozium. There is a loud shrieking sound and an explosion of powerful energies that are released by the strike. When the smoke clears, both the Crozius and Rosarius are destroyed, while Tempestos is once again on his back a few meters away - his temporary prosthetic legs gave out.

With his badges of office destroyed, his legs gone and a dark reputation surrounding him, Tempestos will hand you in his resignation when he is released from the hospital. He asks for a permission to perform a penance.

+Thread suspended+

Very hot evening here guys, we started earlier today, so let us finish a bit earlier as well. Please decided what will be the penance for Tempestos and next time we will be dealing with Silencius!

>Tempestos will hand you in his resignation when he is released from the hospital. He asks for a permission to perform a penance.

"Brother, you have been one of my most stalwart of marines. You fought by my side on Farness Beta, and you have borne your duties as Chaplain with the utmost of skill and honour.

You have banished a powerful daemon of the warp. No small feat. A feat worthy of commendation. But your own soul is in your keeping and yours alone. If this is what you feel you must do, I shall not stop you. I only ask you keep me informed of your intentions and whereabouts, and hope that one day you will return to us an even better Astartes to again bear the symbols of the Chaplains' office."

Also when our marines regroup with the Silent Guardians afterwards (I assume they were off fighting other elements of the Chaosites). We should ask them what they did with Dercius D'anger and his properties - particularly his flagship. Most importantly, I'm interested to know if they've kept him alive. They only 'claimed' they executed him all those years ago.

I'm hoping that the Silent Guardians will be a bit forthcoming since we've come to help them without hesitation. If Akarmos seems in a good mood maybe just ask about about Silencius as well. Just ask him if he knows anything about the 'MIA' chapter master.

Which I believe leaves
>Tartarus: Over the coming months the Revenants and our Tartarus infiltration net should be keeping up updated in how the Tartaran politics changes. What captain or captains fills the vacuum left by Alepros. Watch what the Orks on their own substation do (seeing as is was Alepros who gave them permission, will new leading Captains seek to destroy them?). Where did Alepros' assets go, etc. But most critically they should be looking for news of Tesalia D'anger and/or Deidara Ursus.
As our current matter of interest.
>>
>>4408904
Another thing. Check the bodies and armour of the defeated Chaosites. They looked like Red Giants no? Could they be a splinter group?
>>
>>4408904
>even better Astartes to again bear the symbols of the Chaplains' office."
I am *strictly* against allowing him to stay chaplain or become one again.

while his deeds might be forgiven, some boundaries should not be crossed.
>>
>>4409178
>>4408904
Lyk is fine with his return to office, he did nothing wrong and gets the chance to cleanse his corruption.
>>
>>4409178
>>4409184
Let's say he doesn't return to office immediately upon returning. But if we can observe enduring piety and faithfulness for a matter of years, perhaps even decades, and our marines want him restored to Chaplain, then we can do so.

Yes? No?
>>
>>4409189
No, I'm fine with leaving it up to the men, but waiting is kinda gay.
>>
>>4409189
no

this is not about him or his purity
its about what those under him will think of him
>>
>>4409193
>>4409191
>>4409189
In fact, I think we should make him the mentor of our new chaplains when he returns and share his knowledge of basic exorcisms with them to reward him for his incredible deed.
>>
>>4409199
Let's just decide when/if he returns. His experiences could have a big effect on him.
