Well, for the most part, this is going alright. At least, as far as a retrieval job can go. “Daisy, when’s that grand finale?!”

At least, discounting the warning sirens and calls to intercept the intruder on subfloor B5. That intruder being you.

You don’t usually have snatch and grabs, but Lorelei convinced you to ‘stretch out your thievin’ muscles’ or something of the like, and all things considered it wasn’t that bad. The assignment was essentially to infiltrate some massive corporation, find the superweapon, take the power source, blow the place to smithereens, and get out.

Clients were another corporation, natch. On a relatively futuristic magi-tech world, you had to admit it was pretty stylish compared to your usual stuff. Lots of neon, lots of glitz. Vacation here wouldn’t go amiss. Owlia and Cy might’ve liked it, too. You’d gotten on as new hires, and...well, suffice to say, you’d managed to locate the superweapon (allegedly for defensive purposes due to dangerous factors outside of the city, whatever those might’ve been), sneak down the many various floors to get to it (mostly thanks to Lorelei and Izumi’s distractions being on point), and after a surprisingly rough fight thanks to fucking anti-magic (limited, thank goodness, seems like it was temporary in nature), you’d managed to crack the shell of the massive mechanical beast and get at its juicy robotic innards to steal the target- a massive, black sphere that seemed to be lined with six colored crystals on its outside, wires attached to them all.

Unfortunately, it was becoming obvious judging by the warning klaxons that you’d been made, and now WAY too many doors were starting to shut and people and robot drones making for your position. A jump to get through a nearly closed door after climbing a number of ladders one-handed (damn this thing for not fitting in your bag) and you can’t help but yell again. “Daisy!?”

“Got it, got it!” You hear a massive series of explosions go off nearby, and the whole underground area shakes violently, forcing you to brace yourself against the floor. “Okay, so like, that destabilized the core like whoa! We’ve got like maybe ten minutes to get out here AND airborne before it all goes up!”

“Do you need a pickup?” Izumi asks quickly. “Transport can get here in five!”

Ten minutes, huh? Well, that’ll have to do. Thankfully, you’ve got options.

You are Miranda Styles, Magical Girl for Hire, and today’s another day on the job.

Fortunately for you, you’ve got a few options; though none of them are exactly pleasant, they all have their pros and cons:

>There’s a ground floor exit; definitely gonna be the hardest to get to, though- evacuated or not, there’s going to be a lot of personnel, guards, and probably blast doors to get through. You’ll need to be quick and careful, otherwise, hope the core device can take some punishment.

>The turbo-elevator is a straight shot to the top if you can get to it, and chances are you can get out via aerial extraction with minimal resistance, but it’ll be a close run thing...and who knows how bad things are up there.

>There’s a vehicle bay you passed on one of these levels, but that will entail hoping you find a vehicle in working order, that you can ride it, and THEN that you can get to the extraction point in this labyrinth of a complex.

If you can get to the vehicle bay, it stands to be the fastest route out of here if there’s anything worthwhile still there; of course, that’s a risky proposition at best. Still, very high potential payoff.
“Nah, get airborne, and get ready to meet me on the road! I’m going to find another ride out!” You quickly scramble up another ladder- you’re on B4, now.

“You what?! I mean, if you’re sure! Good luck!” Alright, then. Now, if your memory is accurate, this bay was on B2...here goes.

With klaxons blaring and many guns no doubt in your future, you have to try to hope for the best and get through this all with minimal damage. There furthest the elevator goes IS B2, which means you’ll have to haul your ass up there yourself.

The first hallway or two isn’t bad- it’s when you round the third that you immediately are found out- and the real hard part starts.

"Hey, this is Daisy and Sakura, we're on our way out!" Good. Ideally, you'll be meeting up soon after getting out of this little...snafu.

The first is met with a magi-blast to the skull, though the helmet causes it to merely toss him back instead of pulping his skull. With magic being such a common thing here, magic-resistant wear and armor is standard-issue, which makes things just that much harder for you. You’re forced to duck out of sight as the second guard opens fire on you, several bullets streaking past. That was a pistol he had, but you’re not sure how many shots it has.

Yours, for the record, has a dozen. Loaner, though. Quickly you unholster the thing and take a deep breath...the bullets stop, and you snap your arm out and fire quickly. Two shots ring out and you hear his yell of surprise and scramble for cover- though you’re pretty sure at least one of them hit, you doubt it was a kill shot.

You decide it’s worth the risk to check, and indeed he’s on the floor, scrabbling to get behind cover. You quickly move ahead, and-

Shit! You barely duck the first swing of an electrified baton, swung by an officer that was trying to cover the wounded on, no doubt. He gets a kick to his midsection, followed up with two close range shots that put him down. Eight left. Moving on, you hit the stairs to B3.

“We’re outside, transport is warmed and we’re taking off!” Not much time left, then. You hear a couple sets of footsteps coming from above. Not sure how many- maybe three or more.

No, no. Can’t rush this- rushing hardly ever goes well unless everything else is in panic mode...which it kinda is, but still, you can’t afford to make mistakes here. Think, work carefully.

Ah. Of course. You drop down a flight just to keep some space. “Gartoum. Come out.” You say it as low as you dare, but fortunately he’s quick to respond regardless. The shadowbound creature has proven more than useful as of late, and you’re almost considering him as another member- though by his own admission he’d rather not deal with the day to day of living at the Intersection independently outside of the ring and prefers to simply be ‘on-call’ after all, bonded to service or not. “Can you get me past these guys?”

“Can certainly try!” With little else fanfare, you feel darkness enveloping you, and then a distinct feeling of movement...albeit slowly.

It’s a tense few moments. You can hear vague mutters from everywhere...kind of like you’re submerged just below water. Attention high, they’re on the lookout for anything even remotely suspicious. You feel the sense of movement pause for a bit, precious seconds slipping by. More underwater mumbling...and finally, movement resuming. You’d take a breath if you weren’t worried they’d hear. “Almost there...B2, if you can hear my thoughts,” you think.
“Naturally.” Good. After what you reckon to be a couple minutes at least, though, suddenly there’s a loud series of noises, and before long you’re violently jolted and thrust back into the world of color and sound and feeling as Gartoum speaks with a slight hitch in his voice- worrying by itself. “Here we are- sorry, but methinks we should run quickly!” A bolt of some sort of magic impacts next to his head, leaving no room for guessing what might’ve happened as you recall him and take off on instinct. On the plus side, however, you did make it to B2...now you just need to make it out being chased by security!

“Alright, need to get to the vehicle bay and get out.” Hopefully there was something there worthwhile you could hijack…

You’re nearly waylaid by another guard pair, a big and small one, and keen enough to cut you off- the first is quick enough on the draw due to surprise (and maybe luck) that he gets a shot off just as you do- it doesn’t hit you, but it DOES hit your rental gun, causing it to essentially explode in your hand even as he’s doubled over by the center mass shot. Not enough to injure, but enough that his partner, a large, scaled creature of a being with heavy armor, thinks he’s got you- another LARGE baton-user, it seems, though this one is glowing with a heated light, no thank you.

You dodge the swing, causing it to impact into the wall behind you (and burning some hair) and considering the situation, you elect for a quick and violent removal using a technique you’d recently managed to figure out.

(cont.)
>>
>>4363241

Your hand balls up into a fist, and in that split-second of realization by the big guy, you concentrate- and lash out. Your fist is a blur, the glow surrounding it just as hard to spot.

Especially because it vanishes a moment later, right before impact. There’s a half-second of puzzlement on big scaly’s face- before his eyes bulge as you hear something rather -wet- splorch inside him. His gear is getting damp, and his mouth bleeds red briefly before he collapses. At least it worked this time. Might’ve just been because he was so big.

>Current Mana: 6250/11000

>New Skill: One-Inch Shotgun Punch
>Bang. Some long hours of help from Izumi allowed the formation of an alternative method of execution from the standard Shotgun Punch- the impact’s force is briefly shunted forward in space from her fist’s position, THEN collected and quickly released using the addition power gathered during movement, allowing for a point-blank but not-quite contact-required method of release, allowing Miranda to bypass mundane armor entirely. The result can be messy, but effective. Miranda is still not great at it, however, and can occasionally over or undershoot distance and/or power.

>Cost: 250

That doesn’t help with the ones BEHIND you, however, and you’re forced to keep moving fast; fortunately, your recollection proves useful, and before long you see signs pointing to the vehicle bay- you’re quick to book it down there, but with enemies on your tail, you don’t exactly have spare time to peruse. Thank goodness there’s no ID locks, either... There IS a ‘card key rack’, however. A glass container- and one easily shattered. You just yank the first card your hands grab around, and a number is on it, likely pertaining to the ‘bay’…

7. You’re quick to run down the aisle, swipe the card in front of bay number 7.

And you admit a grin. This’ll work. Yes, this should work nicely.

You quickly unlock the sleek looking car and jump behind the wheel (taking a moment to cock the seat up and forward), damn manufacturers). Finally, use of both arms again- in a fashion. The core is nestled snugly on the passenger seat, and you rev the engine with more than a bit of a relief. “Orchid here,” you announce over your Enhanced Murmur Stone (or as Lorelei had started calling them, Hootstones. You didn’t like the new name.) “Got my ride. You should be getting a lock on my position in short order. Might have company with me, too.”

“Roger that! See you soon!” You’re quick to back out the bay- and just in time, as you see the numerous security officers burst in and begin firing. The squeal of wheels is only for a moment before you shoot off- nothing on the car’s HUD says any major damage was taken, thank goodness...but this is only temporary and you know it, as you prepare for a pursuit. Hardly thirty second later you indeed hear the roar of engines in the subterranean tunnel behind you- and getting loud very quickly. Risky speeds.

Soon, Lorelei’s voice comes through. “Alright, we’re reading you, Orchid! ETA three minutes! Hold them off until we can make it around! Over an’ out!”

“Don’t have to tell me that,” you mutter as you reach into your bag and pull out a submachine gun. Another loaner, actually, but this ‘XR3 Legatus’ bullpup was useful. Middle of the road, but useful. And speaking of ‘middle of the *road*’

A spray of bullets from said gun keeps the motorcycle pursuants from gaining too much ground, though it’s not enough to keep them back for very long- or from firing back. In another few seconds, the tunnel suddenly gives way to open air, and from there you’re a lot more open.

>Focus on keeping them back with gunfire- it won’t do for them to wreck your ride before the transport gets here, but you don’t need to be too aggressive in this case. Hopefully, they won’t ramp things up either.
>Do your best to ditch them via off and on-ramps and start darting down the streetways. They’re not actually open streets, but this place is massive enough that there’s room to maneuver and deceive. Hopefully.
>The best defense is a good offense. Start trying for maximum carnage with your pursuers, and ideally that’ll keep them fearful enough that they’ll think the costs are too much. That, or try that much harder to take you down, but not like you’ve got great options here.

You’re not a fan of these guys, no sir. Which is why you’re quick to move the car over to the right, prepping to go off-ramp at speed. You might be in a good car, but you’re going to need to be careful that they don’t keep up with you around these turns. Which is why you toss out a quick barrier as you race off the off-ramp; you actually get a bit of airtime when zooming off, and have to make a hard, sliding turn to keep on the road proper. Fortunately, the looks aren’t just for show on this car, and it manages to do so.

You’re going to have to race hard to lose these guys. And because of that… “Hey, so FYI, if my signature gets a bit...here and there, that’s intention. Trying to lose some pursuers.”

“Good luck! We’re still on approach!” Right, then. You risk a peek in the rearview mirror…hopefully, you can ditch them without too much trouble.

now that's a good escape car
>>
>>4363408
You can hear the screeching of metal as one, then more of the cars pile up thanks to impact from your unexpected barrier. A number of cars desperately sound as though they’re trying to get out of the way, but it seems like for the most part a mass pile-up is in the immediate future. Only a single car manages to evade the pile up, careening off the edge of the street barricade, however. How it’s still up you’ll never know, but it’s too far behind to make much difference, thank goodness.

Before much longer, however, you still need to get to a distant enough location so that they can’t catch up once the barrier goes down- or just, well, find a different exit ramp. Ideally, they wouldn’t make it to your location until it was too late…

Although the whirring of a helicopter threw that plan into disarray. Great. Just peachy. “Got a bird in the sky bearing down on me! If you can get here quick-”

A retort of machinegun fire forces you to stop that for the time being and focus on evasive driving. The heavy munitions are throwing up some serious gravel, and it’s getting rough to see, but a turn off the road clears things up briefly- although bumpily as you tear through dirt and ram through a chain link fence through to another road, which you turn on and speed down away. “-THAT’D BE GREAT!”

And that’s when you hear a familiar engine whine. “This is Poppy! Big Owl’s coming in to eat the birds!”

(cont.)
>>
>>4363525
You don’t like that name, either. Nonetheless, it’s relieving to see the SES transport, ‘Big Owl’ as Owlia had named it, with the selfsaid pilot at the helm. Ah, and they’re already waiting in the open hatch, too- Lorelei, Izumi, and…

“EMBRACE NOUGHT BUT ASH AND DECAY!” Cylica yells as dark tendrils stream from her staff. They slither towards the copter, just beginning to turn its gun on the transport- and suddenly the pieces start slowly turning to iron filament and separated pieces before your eyes. The chopper sticks in the air for moments- but as the spell continues, it’s quick to turn around and attempt to evacuate the scene.

‘Attempt’ being the keyword; the car stopped as you race for the transport, core in hand. As you reach it, you turn to see that before long the attack chopper's primary rotor pieces suddenly fire off in all directions after getting a bit away from you, and the vehicle drops like a rock, a fireball being the mark of the end of its existence.

>Owlia
>New Skill/Tool: Manamine- A crystal that emits a sphere of impressed mana that, when set that can last for hours, WITHOUT active concentration. Theoretically can be used for remote activation of mana-using devices, or other purposes…
>Mana Limit Updated- 2000 > 2500
>Resting better. Still hopelessly in love with Cylica.

>Cylica
>New Skill: Dark Decomposition- Cylica can decompose a NON-organic (living) construction down to its base components, to allow for retrieval of rare parts or simply material for other purposes. Mana Cost- Dependant on target.
>Still haughty. Still a bitch. Still hopelessly in love with Owlia.

You turn to see Cylica, standing smugly. “Well? I believe you have a few words to say?”

You sigh, barely avoiding rolling your eyes. “...alright, maybe you were worth bringing on this after all.”

If she could fluff in pride, she would. “THANK you.”

“Still doesn’t mean you’re getting a bigger mote share. You two wanted ‘inspiration and materials’.” Her frown is amusing, but at least she doesn’t complain about it.

"Right-o!" Owlia calls from the front seat. "Let's get outta here before the big boom goes off! Way Daisy made it sound, it'd SUCK if we were around to see it!"

"Not wrong," Lorelei quips.

The bay door closes, and you let out a small sigh of relief. Although that doesn't last long...you should probably be on the lookout for any MORE interceptors before you get back to base.

(Done for the night! I need sleep. Will resume tomorrow.)

I was nervous, getting back to this. But once I started, it was a good feeling. Glad to be back.

When the light abates, you allow yourself a little stretch. For a job that had so many creature comforts, it was a bit of a slog. Getting noticed as street toughs, quick working through the ranks, blah blah…

Still, they’d done well enough. And some much needed pocket money were in all of your wallets, which...well, was frankly needed.

Not horribly, mind, but with the added expenses from your new metallic component of the company, things were getting more expensive, and even the HQ itself had to take a bit of a backseat lately- you’d managed to get the Sleeping Quarters upgraded, at least. Mono and Nura both tended to sleep there, and Owlia could usually be found trudging about as well after burning long hours in the lab. Ultimately, fairly useful. Your own little place wasn’t the only area seeing growth, however. You had to say that the new park was looking lively, and the housing being added to in the Crafter’s District was needed...even if it was never not weird how the buildings looked as though they were growing more than being built. Motework was odd like that.

Still...it’s good to have spending money again.

>Current Motes: 75.50

“Yo!” A fanged smile greets you as you step out- Mono, the bardic talent of your group, and one who was starting to impress you. “Hail the conquering heroes?”

“Wouldn’t call us heroes,” Izumi grumbles. “More purveyors of dark justice, in this case…I’m still not certain our clients were as noble as they claimed.”

“They’re a business, ‘Zumi,” Lorelei reminds her. “They ain’t clean- but honestly, they were probably a LOT better than the guys we were stealing from. Maybe.”

Izumi meets her with a goggled stare. “ ‘Maybe’ ?”

Lorelei shrugs incredulously. “Well, we know they weren’t making killer robots or bioweapons! So yeah, probably better.”

“...” Huffing, Izumi gives a sideways nod, conceding the point. "I just hope they prove worthy of using such power."

>Izumi
>Extreme Tension now lasts for ten seconds.
>Size and power limit of Shape Weapon is increased.

Mono just shrugs. “‘Unno. ‘Dark Justice’ kinda sounds cool. Ba- nah-nah-nah, Dark Justiiiiice...” she lowly sings as she air strums a few guitar notes of some made up tune. You can just barely hear the ethereal sound in the air...girl’s really hyped about that new skill of hers. Mind, she just managed to get it remotely consistent maybe a week ago...can’t blame her for wanting to perfect it.

>Mono
>New Skill: Air Guitar- About as it sounds. She can strum the air to essentially create music from thin air, with the caveat that it's ONLY guitar style music. This allows her to make energizing effects (buffs) to her friends without singing. Also costs less mana than a full singing reality warp, but she lacks the concentration (and mana limit) to do both right now.
Cost: ~1000
>Scarf is being used.
>Mana Limit Updated: 3000 > 3250

With that, Lorelei grins. "So, what's your plan for the break, 'Randa? You down for that ice cream social thing yet?" Oh yeah. She’d mentioned that several Outgoers had started getting together at a place. Supposedly to commiserate and just shoot shit, but...y’know, public. She was also trying to get you to come along- and bring one of your...well, friends was a strong word, but one of the people you knew outside of the company. You had a few choices, but that was presuming you wanted to go in the first place.

Made a few notes when the hiatus started about the stuff that needs to be checked once MGFH returns

>Touch base with the crew
Izumi - mass layoff investigation, improve directed magiwave techniques together, talk about the stuff that happened last year
Lori - how are her meditation lessons going, progress on bots' magical training and new bodies, how is everyone doing
Mono - check how much she's grown as an outgoer, are bard lessons actually helping? train her some more (she's the least skilled member imo)
Science Team - take a look at the new pupper-bot, research progress check
Gartoum - still don't have a proper skill list

>Shopping List
Pick up our special order from dwarven weaponsmiths - it's not gonna be an actual whip-sword, right?
Mewla's Camofly
Restock Moleworm mines
Non-magical heavy weapon - to counter anti-magic
Enchant/upgrade our clothes and weapons, treat/attune our gear
>>

We had a brief time-skip, so we should have picked up the weapon by now.

I do want a conventional anti-magic weapon though. Either heavy for bossing or just for normal "mobbing" purposes.
>>
Sorry about the delay. Had to take care of some things. Finishing up now.

“Fine,” you sigh. Might as well. Could meet some new possible contacts for business purposes. You’re not opposed to that. You’ve been keeping up on some information as of late as you’ve worked your way to get higher up the Outgoer ladder, and some major news has constituted a bit of shaking up the Outgoer community up and down the pole.

Interdiction recently had a bit of a shuffling around; apparently they’re restructuring their squads to one A-Rank member per team in order to stave off potential internecine conflict between A-Rankers. Not sure how well that’ll go for them, but whatever.

The Coven and the Shadowwalkers groups merged to form the Guild of Shadows. There were some arguments between members, but it’s been making waves lately as everything gels together and settles into a rhythm. Wonder how Taminy is feeling about it. Last you talked with her she seemed neutral on the subject.

Let’s see...what else? Well...admittedly, that’s about the most you’ve deemed important, aside from the occasional tidbit about...the ongoing issue. The Deal-Maker thing. There’s still occasional hints here and there about someone- no one’s saying who, probably for good reason- getting veery cozy with at least one Deal Maker. Again, no one’s saying who, and likely for very VERY good reason. But it’s worrying. You’d expect the Tribunal or the Ingenious themselves to handle this, but...so far, nothing. Maybe it’s just rumors and jealousy, honestly.

Bah, nevermind that. Need to figure who you’re going to haul along to this. Maybe you could call up a member of your roller derby...well, ‘team’ is a strong word, but to your surprise, you’d been called up by Risenlas, of all folks, asking if you guys wanted to run a practice session once ‘for fun’. You’d agreed, and well...it went okay. Might be a thing in the future, might not. Anyway, they’re possibilities.

Might as well call the big girl up, see if she’s down for some socializing...well, not like that isn’t a foregone conclusion. You’ve had limited contact with her, but it’s obvious she relishes being in the spotlight. Well, maybe not, but she sure loves talking, at least. Maybe she can do it all for you tonight. “Yo.”

“Ah! Hallo, good warrior!” Pleasant as always, you’ll give her that. “Why do you seek my attention this day? Are you in need?”

“No,” you sigh. “Moreso just- there’s this thing happening later, an ice cream social. Bunch of Outgoers meeting up and bitching about work most like. Was thinking on going and wondering if you wanted to pal along with.”

“Ah! A forum of warriors? Intriguing!” Yeah, you kinda figured. “I shall agree to this sojourn! Mayhap where shall we meet to journey towards it? I must confess this ‘Gee Pee Ess’ device seems most useful, but it eludes my understanding beyond short distances…” Oh. Poor girl.

“Just let me know your address, I’ll pick you up and then we can go. I’ve got a ride and it should be big enough for two.” Well...maybe. She’s big, you’re not, Red’s midsized...hope it works out. Nonetheless, she gives the address, and you agree to pick her up in a couple of hours- from what Lorelei told you, you still had a bit of time to relax, at least. Maybe a soak…

After a good, warm bath, your mood considerably less grumpy, you step back out of the apartment. Risenlas is waiting, and honestly, ice cream doesn’t sound too bad right now.

She greets you as you arrive on the outskirts of her complex with a loud hail- seems like she’s gotten into streetwear, as the more frilly outfits she used to wear are gone, replaced by thick jeans and a tank top, leaving her arms uncovered. Beefy lass, really. She laughs when you compliment the look. “Ha ha! I was told that many individuals here are fans of a mightier physique on women! A change I can quite appreciate!”

The place is called ‘Vinny’s’, and as far as you can tell it looks like an old-fashioned diner, if perhaps focused around frozen treats. You can already see a lot of people inside...not great.

“Oho!” Not that Risenlas thinks the same. “It appears that many a warrior has congregated here! Fortunate!” Fortunate? Why?

Well, not that you’re asking. You both enter, and you’re quick to notice the large, smooth-skinned lizard-esque creature at the long counter; Nametag say 'Haili, and she seems to be not too busy, serving a pair of customers casually as the dozen or so Outgoer folks nearby commiserate in their little group.

“Let us forge ahead to meet our new compatriots!” Risenlas cheers.

> “Actually, you go on ahead. I’m going to order something first.” You’re not stalling, but you really DID want some ice cream, or maybe a float or something. If anything, she can soften them up for you.

You shrug. “Actually, you go on ahead. I’m going to order something first. Was REALLY hoping for an ice cream float or something first.”

She nods in understanding, and heads off quickly enough, engaging pretty much the first person she sees. You, on the other hand, you’re going to make good on that ice cream. Well, ice cream float. Fortunately, Haili is quick to oblige, and they even have Cream Soda flavor, to your private delight.

It doesn’t take long to see Risenlas is really getting some looks. Impressed ones, that is. Good for her.

You’re considering heading that way when you sense someone sitting down next to you...and they’re focused on you in particular. “What an attempt at camaraderie.” The voice is accented and a bit gravely. “Smiles, perhaps painted on yet earnest in zer attempts to find zomething to waylay ze ever encroaching ennui that shall permeate lives such as ours without ze familiarity of risk, ze rush of death ever inches away, like a raincoat molded to ze skin.” ...what?

You finally turn to the individual in question- dressed in a full body, black dress, with rips here and there, but going down to her ankles, and beneath it you can see some sort of silver undershirt. She has a classic witch hat, if torn up, and her body looks frail, but yet young and mirthful and wizened all at once. Even has a small black stick in her hands- not a wand, as it’s slightly pointed at the end, and she seems to plant it in her mouth, much like a tooth pick, chewing on it briefly. “And you are…?” you hazard.

“Ah, forgive me,” she nods in greetings properly. “I am Suzette. Having zacrificed my last name for profane eldritch knowledge, I am merely known as Suzette, ze Full Witch.“ She smiles. “And you? You I have heard of, Madam Miranda. Most interesting to zee you here.” She turns away before you can answer. "Milkshake. French Vanilla."

Huh. Fancy that. So this is one of those Coven girls?

I hope the timeskip was long enough for our science team to reverse-engineer the stuff we've donated and we could get upgrade our gear or get more useful items instead of loaning situational items and forgetting about them once the job starts. Mana reactors to recharge ourselves or use techniques for prolonged periods of time, modernized manastone weapons, safe Seither crystals, that kind of stuff. We've been sitting on our motes for a year instead of doing anything useful with it (although desu most of the stuff in the shop is kinda meh in terms of stats and prices, only items with 'bonuses' are worth looking at).

and with Nura who used to be an enchanter-artificer working on jewelry we could do something with the clothes we wear, like all the necklaces, headgear and other stuff. "Heard of you, myself,” you venture. “How’s the merger treating you?"

She shrugs. “It iz but more colleagues of pain and suffering, lashing out at zat which does not feel pain itzelf. More voices crying defiance at ze abyss for naught to hear. So alright, I suppose. More people for movie nights. Perhaps I can find a kindred spirit in good ‘orror movies at last...”

"Right...Kira mentioned you when I met her a while back. She seemed to like you." Bit of a fib, but best to keep on her good side.

She snorts. “Ze witchling has potential. I ‘ave tutored her from time to time. She lacks ze proper...mindset, for a witch, but ozzerwise, her skill is laudable. Also quite skilled with ze Living Tarot. Ah- it iz like a traditional tarot reading, however, ze cards are blank,” she explains at your curious look. “It takes magic to unveil what ze cards ‘ave to say, skill to comprehend it, and zey never say ze exact same zing for anyone. It iz not an easy skill to come by- I myself am not so adept at it, but in truth, I ze little reason for it. We are all fated to an eternal torment one way or anozer, so hey?”

...right. Well then- “Aha! My friend, you are making more friends!” Ah, Rizenlas. She seems quite happy to see you socializing. “Excellent! Come, I would like to meet your newest acquaintance!”

Oh...hm. Not sure if that would be the best thing for her…oh. Oh, she’s already getting up. She has a small, sickly, but honest smile on her face as she approaches your friend; with hand outstretched, Rizenlas takes hers and shakes it vigorously. “Well met! I am Rizenlas, of Interdiction! I understand we are not to stand on ceremony here, correct?”

“Ceremony, much like my hand, is fragile and breaks quickly when under severe stress,” Suzette moans as she tries to get feeling back in her digits. “Nonezeless, it is most interesting to meet you. I am Suzette, ze Full Witch.”

“Ah! My apologies,” Rizenlas offers. “My strength is prodigious, and at times I have been known to misjudge it! In fact, recently, I will confess to an accident that was yet found quite humorous…”

“Was zere anyone maimed?” Suzette asks with an odd gleam in her eye.

“Of course not!” is the proud response.

“A shame. Za may have been more funny,” she mutters. “Carry on.”

“...Right!” Seems like she just glossed over it. “Well, then, it happened right before I went in for a bit of training…”

As she begins her tale, you can see that there’s a number of people here, most in their own worlds, but some that seem to be on the lookout as well- wallflowers nursing drinks or otherwise maybe hoping someone takes initiative. You can’t blame them. Now, how to do this…

After looking around and considering the options, you think the best one might be just to stick where you are. Rizenlas has a smile on her face as always, but every time Suzie hits her with another one of her morbid or just plain creepy lines, that strong smile wavers just a bit. You’re not really interested in seeing what a weirded out Rizen looks like, so it might be best for all parties involved for you to interject if things seem to be getting a bit too much.

It’s not much later that you realize- a certain someone that’s the cause of all this isn’t anywhere in sight. “Hey...where’s Lorelei?” you mutter to yourself. She’s not exactly the most low-key individual, so…

“Whom?” Rizen is more attentive than you thought, apparently, as she immediately turns her focus towards you. “Someone you know?”

“Friend and workmate. She invited me here in the first place,” you explain. “Thought she’d be here by now.”

“Ah! I see!” Without warning, she turns to the mass herself, and speaks up, her voice carrying easily through the throng. “Has anyone here seen a young woman by the name of Lorelei!? We seek her!”

If nothing else, the group doesn’t seem offended, muttering to each other briefly before you start hearing responses. “Blonde and pretty cool? Yeah, she was here earlier,” one guy says. “Ran off somewhere not too long ago, though.”

“She said she was gonna get some stuff after she talked to Haili for a bit,” a girl pipes up, who comes up to you herself. She’s a tall one, olive-skinned, brunette, and looks like a statuesque model with her form fitting biker-wear. “Haili’s super chill,” she whispers to you, “So we can get away with a lot more than if Vinny’s manning the counter. Don’t worry, it’ll be fun!”

Yeah, no, whatever’s about to happen, you A: want to know the explicit details, and B: likely stop it. Which is why you bother to excuse yourself and immediately dial the number of the would-be perpetrator. “Heeeey, ‘Randa! Made it there?”

“Sure did,” you confirm. “Hung around, talked a bit, heard you went out to get some ‘stuff’.” You’re pretty sure she can hear the air quote inflection. “Might telling me what that ‘stuff’ is?”

“Aww, come on!” She sounds more pouty than really angry. “What, you think I’m some kinda druggie?”

“No, but I wouldn’t put it past you to bring something that might cause a museum-tier price tag to come down on us,” you affirm.

“Totally wouldn’t! Once is enough!” she insists. “Look, trust me, what I got isn’t anything like that! It’s just gonna be funny!”

You’re not letting this go so easily. “Funny how? Funny ‘ha-ha’ or funny ‘weird’?”

The pause isn’t good. “Uhhh...lil’ of column A, lil’ of B? NOT dangerous, though! It’s like, stuff for a game, that’s all!”

You sigh. She should understand the potential downsides, and, well...to be fair, she’d been somewhat better recently, despite your misgivings. “Fine, but if there’s any damages, you’re paying for it ALONE, hear me?” You’re not paying for any mistakes of hers, though.

“Relaaax, there won’t be any damages! We’re gonna have a lotta fun stories in the future, though!”

Damnit, when she puts it like that. "...I'm curious myself. What are you really planning?"

“Well, you know that game ‘Never have I ever?’” you can practically HEAR her grin. “It’s like that plus truth or dare! And props WILL be needed!”

Oh joy.

Thus, you find yourself around a number of tables with over a dozen Outgoers and one way-too-giddy Lorelei. “Hokay! So, in the spirit of Outgoer bonding, we’re playin’ a game and here’s the rules! One, someone says they’ve never done something specific on a job, to someone else. If you HAVE, you haveta take a shot of THIS!” And she holds up of a bottle of… ‘Diavela’s Faefire Sauce- Use With Caution!’ “UNLESS you’re willing to tell us, IN DETAIL, how you did it, or in some cases...SHOW us!”

A few ‘Ooh’s’ go around- yeah, that could get embarrassing real quick. “Last one standing gets a 5 Large Mote gift card to the store of their choice from yours truly! Who’s game!?”

To your surprise, several opt out, and at the end of the day there are eleven total. Rizenlas had bought into the challenge, but yourself and Suzie hadn’t said anything, though Lorelei was clearly looking at you expectantly. “Your friend zeems disappointed, which should not be unfamiliar in zis place…” Suzie notes to you silently. “Interezing it may be, but to bare one’s soul so blatantly requires more zan strength of arms. Besizids, I doubt any would wish to hear zee...blood-curdling and horrid zings I have done.” There’s something about the way she says that that makes you wonder if she’s ACTUALLY being honest about that or not...

Lorelei can stinkeye you all she wants, you’re not taking part in this. You’re not stopping it, but that doesn’t mean you have to go along entirely. "I'm not exactly a fan of gastrointestinal agony, so I'll pass." You make sure to say that loud enough for her to hear, and she just rolls her eyes and turns to see if any others take her up. "I'm fine with just watching, and someone has to be the designated driver."

“You expect alcohol?” Suzie asks.

“Either that or killer stomachaches,” you clarify. You swear you felt the heat off that bottle from here…

Eventually, however, three more individuals decide to participate- meaning they were peer pressured. One younger kid with a lot of red and purple on, a tall, thin girl with freckles and thick glasses but a surprisingly confident face, and a purple, straight-horned woman who seems to agree only reluctantly. “Alrighty! Now that we’re all set, let’s get ready for some secrets!”

Right. At first, you have to admit it doesn’t sound...well, too dangerous to property, at least. Might even be morbidly hilarious like Suzie wants.

At first, the questions are largely benign. Basic, and some friendly tales of risks taken and funny moments. No one drinks.

But then the first poor sap is forced to down their shot. “Never have I ever had to swim through garbage for a job.” The way she was grinning (and the recipient’s glare) tells you that she knew the answer, and there’s a tense moment where she looks between her tormenter and the bright-green shot, before downing it while glaring at her.

It takes all of three seconds before she’s holding her throat begging for ice cream- which Lorelei seems to have gotten ready beforehand, having warned Haili in advance. She practically face-dives into her bowl, but it doesn’t seem to do her much good, judging by her continuous howls and the rapidly melting ice cream, which had looked to you pretty massive.

“Ho ho...zis may be zome fun indeed,” Suzie says with a small smile. You...aren’t so sure, as you watch the poor girl careen off to the bathroom for reasons you’d rather not think of.

Really dodged a bullet on that one. Not today, Lori.

So something that I don't think I ever really clarified- durability. That's a thing that's been...iffy, in some cases, and that's because I'VE been iffy in some cases. Particularly on the subject of bullets.

I don't like the idea that they could just casually shrug off firearms, but at the same time it seems a little bit much to me that they could be taken down with such a common tool. So I think what I've eventually come to in terms of a decision is that real bullets affect them like air soft or paint ball bullets affect normal people, if hit on bare skin.

Hurts like a bitch, but isn't fatal. Unless they get a lucky shot or hit a soft point.

Just wanted to clarify. Alright, writing my post.

Lorelei is laughing like a loon, as are the others- baring Rizenlas and one or two worried ‘contestants’. Whatever they think of it, you’re suddenly extremely glad you’re not participating. “One down!” she crows.

“Wuss.” The biker-clad girl that talked to you earlier seems like she’s putting on a brave face at least.

And of course that means she’s the next target, as chosen by a bottle spin, with a young, lion-esque fellow being her potential tormentor. “Alrighty...I’ve never-”

“Hey, you gotta say the phrase right!” Lorelei quickly interrupts, looking far too serious for this kind of game.

He just sighs. “Fiine. Never have I ever...had to eat a sapient to finish a job!” He looks confident in that one, curiously enough.

The lady looks pensive. “Hmmm...define ‘eat’.”

Oh boy. This may end up worse than you thought. “Hey, so...Lori, you made sure there’s enough bathrooms in this place just in case, right?”

She actually snorts at that question. “Oh, come on! We’re all Outgoers here! I’m pretty sure at least a couple of us are a bit tougher than some omega-hot sauce!”

That is the prelude to what is fully half of the contestants ending up making a dive for ice cream, the bathrooms, or both. A few of them manage to tough it out, but others tap out quick to the onslaught of heat and gastrointestinal warfare. You’re honestly worried for a few of them- the big girl that talked to you is a survivor, but she’s looking a touch paler than she was at the start for sure, and you can see her blowing air intermittently. Rizenlas is also one of the hardy few, having actually made it through fairly well, though you can see her face red from effort, and she’d had a large bowl of ice cream herself. The other five are a large, tiger-shark anthropomorphic girl (is that the same girl you met before…? nah.), who’s squirming, but trying to put on a tough facade, a young, pink haired girl dressed in pastels with awfully curly pigtails who’s bouncing in her seat, sweating, and eyes darting everywhere as though nervous, a slightly overweight boy in a mask and spandex that’s breathing hard in and out another, older man with wiry hair, some stubble and a bomber jacket that seems to be stone still, but no outward signs of distress to boot. The last is a young girl you SWEAR you’ve seen before...but you can’t place her. About your age, fiery red hair, lightly tanned, with a thin vest on- you think that’s Flashpoint colors, but it might be coincidence. She’s licking her lips, but otherwise looks fine, barring her occasionally tapping her heels on the floor.

“Hokay!” There’s seven left! And that means an uneven number! Which means SOME one’s gonna have to take the role of partner for someone else! Soooo...good luck, cause we’re gonna Lightning Round this!” What? “I’m gonna pick someone from our ‘audience’, and THEY’RE gonna ask one question for EVERYONE to answer! And then that’s it!”

“...doesn’t that make it not fair?” someone asks. It certainly FEELS unfair, somehow… “What if there’s a tie?”

“I’ll work something out!” she dimisses. “Anyway, if anyone has any complaints, now’s the time!” No one responds- although you’re wondering if that’s just because everyone wants to end this torture or what. “Right! Let’s go! I piiiiiiick…” she makes a big show out of looking over the crowd, but you’ve got a sinking feeling in your gut- Miranda!” Yup.

You make sure to give her a serious stink-eye as you sigh and consider your part in this farce. You know if you try to back out now, she’ll dog you for it for a while...and, well, they all look anxious. Might as well end it for them…

“Never have I ever…” you drone out…

“...made out with an enemy to finish a job,” you finish. It’s something you’ve avoided so far, and hopefully you’d never have to do it, or at least not for a long, long time going. You hadn’t heard them ask this one, so it should still be fair game.

“Oooooohhh! Unexpectedly saucy!” Lorelei jeers as she looks at the rest. “Well? Who’s lip-locked before? I got shots waiting!”

There’s a pregnant pause as all of them look at each other with various expressions...then the older fellow in the jacket sighs and raises his hand, though he doesn’t look horribly guilty. “Put the moves on an ol’ fashioned wicked witch. Took a good while to get in her good graces, too. Nearly went the full monty, buuut, well, I was on a time limit, sadly.” He shrugs in faux-resignation. “Her expression wasn’t fun to look at, but she was a scary crone anyway. Looks weren’t saving her, sadly.”

Couple mutterings and snorts in the audience, but Lorelei nods. “Fair enough! That gets you out of a drink! Anyone else?”

The young hero boy, Rizenlas, and the familiar red-haired girl all shake their heads amidst a chorus of ‘no’s. The girl from earlier, the shark haired girl, and the pastel-wearing young girl all remain. The pastel-wearing girl in particular is shaking in her boots...and before anyone else can say anything, she simply grabs the shot, downs it, and she’s off to the races. Those being the ice cream counter, where there’s already a massive pile of strawberry ice cream waiting for her.

“And that’s one out! Any others?!” Lorelei cheers.

The two intimidating ladies both eye each other; the shark-girl seems to consider for a long moment, before shrugging. “Yeeeahhh, I got a reason, but it’s kinda...I’d be embarrassing someone ‘round here if I did. Not to mention admitting something private. Not a good look.”

“Aw!” Lorelei comments. “Still got you to go, then, JJ!” So that’s what the girl’s name is...

“Mmm...damnit. I’d say, but that’s a REALLY private matter for me, too,” she admits. “Not really my place to elaborate.” She sighs, then taps her hand on the countertop. “Well, it’s been fun, but I’m pretty sure I’m off to the porcelain throne for a while…”

“Ooh, this ain’t gonna be pretty…” the shark-girl concedes with a self-effacing grin.

(cont.)
>>
>>4381215
JJ at least makes a semi-dignified exit, speedwalking to the bathroom while carrying a quintuple scoop bowl of chocolate ice-cream. The sharkgirl just proceeds to shovel way too much icecream in her mouth, uncaring of any stares.

Lorelei has to put in effort to keep from laughing. “And that leaves four! Wilder, Rizenlas, Mako, and Sarah-”

“OH.” You can’t help but vocalize it- THAT’S her name. Sarah Beedily. “-all are the last ones standing! And also I’m out of Faefire Sauce which is the real reason I had to end this! Soo...I guess we’ll work something out, but since Wilder actually had to tell his, I’m gonna give him the gift card if that’s okay with everyone!”

Fortunately, though there’s some grumbles (particularly from Sarah), there’s no argument, and Wilder accepts his reward with grace. “Thank you kindly. Now then, young folks, howsabout I put this to good use? I choose my gift card to be for here, and you lot can get anything you want off the menu!”

The other contestants look particularly relieved, and grateful as there's light applause.

“Well. Zat could have gone better, though I would ‘ave preferred it go worze,” Suzie admits. “Nonezeless, it was enjoyable entertainment for a night, zo that’s nice.” And with that, she looks to you, an untraceable expression on her face. “That zaid, perhaps...you would be willing to accompany me on an occasion in ze future?” She puts on a small grin. “Your company iz...not uninteresting, I find.”

Wow, unexpectedness all around, for some reason. Still...you came here with Rizenlas for the purposes of getting out…

“Uh...sure, I guess?” you hazard. With what you’d heard, you’re kinda surprised she found you agreeable...or maybe she just wanted to practice hexes or something on you. Still...well, maybe this could be to your advantage- or perhaps Tami’s, at least. “I could go for that.”

“Excellent,” she says as she nods. “If you would allow me your contact information. I ‘ave none but ze invocation of dark spirits...and perhaps asking to ozers to send a message for me.”

Hold on… “Wait, you don’t have a phone or anything?”

“My history with technology iz one fraught with pain and peril,” she intones flatly. Ah. Well then…

With that, you grant her your contact information- she DOES give you the contact information for the Guild of Shadows in general, which you consider a plus. She takes her leave after that, citing that she needs to finish ‘a bloody and vicious project- needlecraft.’ You’re not sure WHAT kind of needlecraft, but you’re not inclined to ask, either.

What you ARE inclined to ask after, however, are how the ‘fallen warriors’ faring; you don’t want anything coming back to you on this, and you make your way towards the bathrooms…

...Only to be stopped by Lorelei stepping out of them, grinning guilty when she nearly runs into you. “Heeeeey...so yeah, no, you don’t wanna be in there right now.”

“It’s that bad?” you say in a bit of incredulity.

“Look, we aren’t gonna get in trouble, just…” she shakes her head this way and that, and that’s all you need.

“Let’s get out of here,” you decide, and fortunately she doesn’t argue the point. Rizenlas is fortunately not too far away, and you both snap her up before she has any chance to complain. “Well, that was fun!” Lorelei says as she revs her own cycle. “Hope next time goes as well!”

“It was a true test of fortitude,” Rizenlas says gamely, despite her expression being a few notches below the jovial you’re used to.

The ride home, after dropping Rizenlas off (and getting a request for another practice game with the team sooner than later, which you’d agreed to consider) was quiet, at least until you made it back to the apartments. “Toldja it’d be fun, right?!” she grins, and you’re surprised that her expression is...well, it’s similar to normal, but. There’s a sort of unease to it. Her mouth twitches just a bit, enough to let you know- or at least suspect- that maybe she’s...concerned about something?

Well...she WAS trying to help, in her own way. Couldn’t fault her for that. Wasn’t even the worst attempt. “It was...a bit crude for my tastes, but it was interesting to meet people.”

At once, whatever tension seemed to be running through her seems to melt away, as her smile becomes a bit smaller, but infinitely less uncertain and far more casual. Shaking her head, she gives a playful snort. “Yeah, that last bit was the point. But hey, no one got REALLY hurt ‘cept their pride a bit.” She sighs. “Real glad for THAT.”

Hm. You have a good idea of what was going on with her, but… better to ask. "Anything wrong, by the way? Was the "aftermath" too much even for you or something?"

She snorts, nearly turning it into a giggle. “You could say that! ‘Aftermath’ was too much for a couple folks! Hoo, gonna need a lot of freshener to clear that up...but, hey, I’m just glad you had fun. You need more fun!” You’re not sure how much you believe that, but…

“Thanks.” It’s the least you could say.

“Anyway, you get some sleep. Could all use it, right?” She winks, and indeed, you’re mentally drained enough- sleep sounds damn good right now…

Supporting.

About an alternate Flux Wave, we seems to be agreeing on a single target version? I'd like to propose another version with a 90-120 degree aimable cone instead.
+ Not a radial 360 degree blast, making it friendly-fire proof (ish). A lot more control too.
+ Doesn't need an energy tether attached to the target, if we're using that for the single target version.
+ In theory, takes less mana than the main version and is faster/more accurate than the single target version, since we don't need to rely on the tether. Again if we're going that route.

I remember that we were hatching a theoretical one involving channeling Flux Wave's effect through a tether to a single target and then intensifying it.

...And today is another day in that. Delilah had been keeping her word as best she could between work- her being a legitimate child, she wasn’t exactly primed for stealth operations, but she’d kept her ears open, and she apparently had a ‘non-presence’, according to Izumi. You don’t think she was being literal, but...vampire. Who knows? At any rate, she’d managed to keep you informed as best she could recently.

It wasn’t much so far- some news about some more businesses closing, a couple opening. Something that kept a place in your mind was the Care House apparently getting some adjustments to its curriculum, which was curious, but that happened all the time, so nothing you could investigate right now. Of course the Guild of Shadows merger was mentioned, as well. Small things like that.

However, recently- as in before you’d left for your last job, you’d been informed via your friend that she’d stumbled upon something odd...old-fashioned paper notes.

Those weren’t exactly common in The Intersection, honestly. Too big of a chance for...well, this. Lately, you’d kept your nose clean as possible to avoid anyone looking at you too hard, as Mab’s warnings had given, but according to Izumi, Delilah was worried and wanted you to see them since it sounded like ‘Outgoer business’ to her. You don’t recall telling her your job, but...it’s not like it was private, and you’d been more in the public eye than before. Plus Izumi herself, so blah.

Moving on, she hadn’t told you anything specific, but if she suspected it was ‘Outgoer business’, then it was worth moving on. It’s for that reason that you’re meeting with her now instead of ASAP- not only had you just agreed to the job and were about to set out, but it wouldn’t do for anyone keeping eyes on places to possibly see such repeat visits to the young girl like that.

You aren’t keen on staying in the Library, so you generally meet her with Izumi as a support, and the three of you head back to Izumi’s place- Sal doesn’t generally bother with micro-management or constant oversight you knew, especially with Izumi, so it was decently safe. “So, whatcha got for us?” you lead off.

“Uh, um, here. I-I just found them on the ground, in the employee area.” From her little tote bag she pulls out a pair of small sheets of paper and hands them over. You and Izumi take one apiece, quickly skimming over them.

Yours is...odd. It’s a list of Outgoer outfits. Smaller ones, too. Interdiction, Flashpoint, Dynamic Methods- the big three aren’t on here for whatever reason, but a few others are that you recognize: the Redliners (more of a racing guild than Outgoer group, in your opinion), the Guild of Shadows, Knights Resplendent, Max Force (destruction specialists), and others...including Silver Eye Solutions. Next to each name is a casual description of what they all do- yours is described as ‘force multipliers and general activity’, which isn’t inaccurate. There’s also...oddly enough, a set of exclamation points next to them all, as well- SES has three ‘!!!’ next to them, as do the Knights, while Max Force and the Guild have 2, and Redliners have just 1. You have no idea what those are for, though… there’s one group, though, that you SWEAR you’ve never heard of, named ‘Progenitors’ that has a full five.

Well, maybe Izumi can help. “I got a list of Outgoer organizations. What’s on yours?”

“Nothing I can understand immediately,” she admits. “Looks like administrative finance reports. A lot about estimated fees, average workrates, liability...danger and risk. I mean, on the whole, relatively benign sounding, but if that’s the case…”

“Why write this information down in analogue, instead of just sending it to whoever needs it?” you finish.

“S-so...does that mean it- it isn’t worth anything?” Delilah asks tenderly.

> “We’re not sure...but maybe we can ask someone on this list. See if there’s anything that might make sense.”

You shake your head, but it’s mostly just you running through the facts in your mind. “We’re not sure…” it’s here you turn to Izumi. “...but maybe we can ask someone on this list. See if there’s anything that might make sense.” Something about this whole situation just isn’t right. But there’s not much you can do to find out what aside from following the obvious trail.

Fortunately, it seems like Izumi is in agreement. “If we keep things relatively quiet and non-obvious, we should be fine, I think. No harm in one Outgoer outfit contacting another for discussion about a possible tandem job.”

“Helps that we’re already in contact with two of them,” you note. “Probably better to go one by one though, regardless of what we pick.”

“So...who first?” she muses.

“Redliners are out for now,” you note. “I know they’re all gearheads, and you need a really nice ride to get in. I love my Red, but she’s not on that kind of level. These ‘Progenitors’ are gonna be too risky to contact, too, I think. IF this is a threat assessment like I think it is.” Not to mention even finding their contact info would be an issue in and of itself. “So that leaves us…”

It was back in thread #56, where one of the employees mentioned there were canadates being selected to join the Ingenious ranks. I bet that whatever happened then is probably related to all these mergers and layoffs.

>The exchanges continue, but it’s not that you’re worried about for now- Lorelei seems to be holding her own ably. You’re curious about that rather large boy watching nervously. “Hey.”
He actually jumps a bit, not really having noticed you- though it seems the lady on the other side did, narrowing her eyes at you slightly. He, on the other hand, turns to you slightly. “O-oh. Hey.”

>“So,” you start casually. “What’s your deal? New arrival to the Intersection?”

>“K-kinda?” He seems a lot more nervous now that you’re near him- although that might be Eagle Mask getting tripped, although he falls out of the way before Lorelei can elbow drop him. “I mean, I guess I’ve been here for a bit, like, a month now, just kinda doin’ odd jobs. Before, I used to be part of a team, and, well…I mean, I was just the info guy, but-”

>“Relax, don’t need to tell me your life story,” you assure him. “So, don’t guess you know anything about why these new Outgoer groups are popping up?”

>Wait...WHAT. “When you say ‘up top guys…’” you venture. “You mean the-”

“...well, a couple choices, but I think the Knights Resplendent might be the best choice for now. I’ll likely be meeting up with the Guild in due time, but for now, they’re the ones that apparently have an equal ranking as us, so might be best to start on even ground.”

Izumi nods, not finding anything wrong with the idea. “Fair enough. Should we do so today?”

You shake your head. “No, I’ll call them up asking for something a bit more formal; they’re small enough that asking for a meetup tomorrow shouldn’t be too much for them.” With that in mind, you take out your phone, searching for their contact number...ah, here we are.

“Hellooo?” The voice is snobbish, female. Hint of a purr. “This is Scorpia of the Knights Resplendent, to whom am I speaking?”

“Miranda Styles, Silver Eye Solutions. I’m calling because if possible, I’d like a word with your leader, as I’d like to have a meeting with him come tomorrow.”

“Hm. That so?” She doesn’t sound impressed. “Any reason?”

“Just possible business,” you answer.

There’s a pause on the other side, and for a moment you’re concerned she won’t relay your request, before you hear a “Fine. He says sure, come by whenever,” which calms your nerves just a bit. Hopefully, you can figure out how to phrase this all in private to him. “Is there anything else?”

“No, thank you.” She unceremoniously hangs up after that, and you sigh in relief. “Alright, that’s set up.”

“S-so now what do we do?” Delilah asks. “Or, uh, me?”

“Quite,” Izumi agrees. “You’ve accomplished more than we could ask for, and you have our gratitude.”

“Oh! Uh, I...if you’re sure…” she trails off, as your pat on the shoulder transitions to a pat on the head.

“Relax. If we need anything more from you, we’ll let you know. Izumi?” the girl in question looks up at you. “I was gonna ask if you wanted to train with me a bit, but…”

“No, no, that’s fine,” Izumi insists. “But perhaps I could spend some time with Delilah for a bit?” She turns to the girl in question. “I’d love to hear how you and your guardian are faring.”

That seems to get her attention, and she gets to talking while you decide to excuse yourself- if only to get some warmups in. Hopefully, you all can figure out what to ask these guys in that meeting. “A directed Flux Wave?” Izumi asks, a bit of a grin on her face. “Well, I can’t say it doesn’t sound familiar.”

“Right, it’s kinda like your ‘Cone of Discord’ thing,” you explain. “I was thinking we could at the very least work together on it, maybe just kinda figure it out together since they’re practically the same thing.” Made sense to you, at least… “There’s a couple of other things I want to work on, too, but that’s kinda the primary goal right now- get something at least basic I can use as a baseline, and then go from there into something more solid, hopefully.”

Fortunately, Izumi seems to agree. “Very well, then. Let’s compare how we both formulate our respective mana signatures, and then perhaps we can go from there. I recall you mentioning before that your system was pseudo-randomized, causing you to have to essentially ‘be’ random before executing it...but in my own studies, I think that perhaps there may be a way to generally acquire a similar result without resorting to such.”

“Wouldn’t that defeat the purpose?” you note.

“Not necessarily. If the intention is merely to debilitate organic creatures, I think it can be stabilized. Of course, to affect other things may require different methods...my Cone is only usable against living organisms, unfortunately.”

“Hm. Well, let’s just see if we can’t get a shape down first. Honestly, it’d be fine if I could even just stop it from going in all directions...” And with that, you begin.

The next hour or two moves swiftly, but with Izumi’s help, you nonetheless get...well, some semblance of an idea. Although it’s not a cone, perse, so far. It’s more like a...bubble? An expanding sphere of influence that’s emitted in front of you, at least about...10 feet in diameter, which really isn’t bad at all. You’re still not quite able to condense it to the levels that you’d prefer, and it’s weaker than your normal Flux Wave by a fair bit, but it’s certainly a start, and Izumi’s fairly certain it’ll at least cause some disorientation for anyone caught in it. Blurred vision, nausea, ringing ears, all that. Unfortunately, it also seems like it wears off quickly if they’re not in the bubble, thanks to Izumi being willing to test it out for you.

>Flux Bubble unlocked: A lesser version of your intended Directed Flux Wave, it is exclusively for living targets. It creates a bubble field approximately 10 feet in diameter directly in front of you. It leaves targets disoriented, but not weakened, and the effects only last as long as one is inside the bubble. The bubble also requires concentration to maintain, and moving it is beyond you, currently. Still, it DOES cost less than your Flux Wave, so there’s that.
>Cost: 1500 Mana

“Well, it’s certainly progress,” you admit, as the bubble itself ‘pops’ as you release your concentration. “Not what I was going for, but it’s something. I still need to shrink it and shape it like yours, and then figure out how to get it random like before.”

Izumi had been working on her own Cone of Discord much in the same time as you did, and your mutual help had caused her to figure out a few things- mostly extension of its range and size. Damn shame there’s no simple way to just copy her, but according to her, it was just all practice with shaping, which you...still need to work at.

>(Izumi): Cone of Discord unlocked- This technique works purely on living adversaries, and causes them to become disoriented, uncoordinated, and clumsy. The longer someone is trapped in the cone, the longer the effects last, even if they escape the Cone’s radius.

“That’ll be tough, yes, but I’m sure you can do it with practice. Took me time and effort to make mine happen, after all,” Izumi encourages. “Now, if we could move on for a moment? There’s a couple of other things I was hoping for help with as well…”

“Yeah, same here,” you confirm. “I want to work on my tether, and figure out the trick to making fire. Magic fire. Maybe conduct one through the other.”

“...why?” Izumi asks plainly.

“Why not?” not like she needs to know EVERYTHING about your logic. But… “Could be useful. Never know.” Her shrugged response is brushed off as you both prepare for more hours of work.

The rest goes similarly, fortunately. The tether, which you already has a grasp on, is blessedly not too hard to reinforce- after all, if you’re planning on splitting your focus to send energy down it, it’s got to be similar to the idea of reshaping said mana into an alternate form, like how you already do with your Shocking Touch and Energy Channel. Sending it down the reinforced mana line shouldn’t be much worse, right?

It’s not, thank goodness, and the first elements of the Mana Conductor begin to take shape, as you can manage small arcs of electricity down the mana tether; enough to visibly affect some of the dummies in the training room. No major scorch marks or anything, but it does cause some scars, lighting up of ‘damage’ spots, and other indicators. Flame is similar, though it’s oddly a touch easier as you’ve channeled it through your body before- it’s a matter of just redirecting that and synchronizing it with the mana that’s already formed, through a specific limb, not just your body as a whole. Still a task, and not easy, but it is one you’ve experienced before. There’s still stability issues, but you’re confident you can hash those out over time.

>Electric/Fire Line unlocked: An improvement of Mana Tether, allowing you to send mild shocks or mana-made fire through the tether to impact whoever’s on the other side. It’s difficult to keep up, however, and for now should only be used in short bursts. Not to mention, the mana infused makes the tether more fragile than without it, and thus it can be snapped easier- for now.
>Cost: 200 per pulse.

There’s some work that still needs to be done, but for the most part you have to think that you’ve gotten a good amount of training done today. Lorelei seems to be out with the bots; they’d been working on their sociability as of late, and gone on a few jobs themselves, but they were still largely new to things, and they’d only once used their new ‘skins’, which they admitted they found ‘difficult to acclimate to’, in Prima’s words. Still, it was progress.

Nura and Owlia had largely gotten along after their first job together, and even Cylica seemed to treat her with relative respect. Nura had gotten far more comfortable with you all in the days afterwards, and despite her...clothing preferences, she really was pleasant to have around. As expected, she largely kept to the laboratory these days, even while Owlia occasionally left on a job.

Mono, as stated, is doing better these days, and with a bit more gear and skill to her now, will certainly be a force to be reckoned with.

All in all...everything’s nice so far. You just want to keep it that way.

The day after, you’re in a not-so familiar place, though you’ve been here before. The HQ of the Knights Resplendent, which generally resembles a large Victorian mansion. It’s...not bad looking. Yourself and Izumi are present- you’d roped Lorelei into the information, as skilled as she was about this all. She’d declined showing up, as a form of plausible deniability.

As you enter the house, you’re quickly greeted by one of the members- you barely remember their name, Vivi- something…

“Ah, glad you made it! Experyia’s waiting in the lounge, lemme show you there…”

It’s not too far, and before long, there he is. He’s got a silk number on, seemingly casual shirt and slacks, but still proper enough for a meeting. “Aha, hello there! Please, have a seat. Need anything? Coffee, snacks?” You swear his attitude is...different than you recall. For the better, but still different. “Or shall we get right to...whatever this is? I must confess you have me curious as to the nature of the business I was informed of.”

Hm...how to broach this topic?

>Flux Bubble unlocked: A lesser version of your intended Directed Flux Wave, it is exclusively for living targets. It creates a bubble field approximately 10 feet in diameter directly in front of you. It leaves targets disoriented, but not weakened, and the effects only last as long as one is inside the bubble. The bubble also requires concentration to maintain, and moving it is beyond you, currently. Still, it DOES cost less than your Flux Wave, so there’s that.

Now, if only the bubble could maintain itself then it would be a fantastic tool for defending choke points and denying areas. But since having the it up requires concentration at the moment it's much less useful, we can use the time to throw magiblasts or do something else instead. A decent start, but this needs more work for sure.
I say the next time we do another session, we should focus on it's stability and strength instead of trying to move the thing.

Thinking about it, it’s probably best to be vague yet honest. “...do you have any knowledge of the rash of firings and job losses going around?”

He blinks in surprise, and puts on a thoughtful look. “Hm. Well, I’ve heard of a few places closing down, but I hadn’t thought much of it. We’ve been rather busy trying to climb the ranks, so we haven’t really bothered ourselves much with local gossip and goings-on unless they were relevant to our interests. Why do you ask?”

“Just heard about a few things,” you respond. And, well…”

“Wait,” he interrupts, a small spark in his eyes as he thinks further. “I DID hear something about a recent Outgoer group being shut down under odd circumstances.” You motion for him to continue. “There was some scuttlebutt about a recently formed space-centric Outgoer organization. I do mean VERY recently, too. Didn’t even have an official name yet and had barely started operations, but next thing you know, it’s disbanded and its members just moving on to other places. Usually takes longer for that to happen, and I know a couple of folks of mine thought it odd, but that was all.” He fixes you with a curious and concerned stare. “Do you think it’s some sort of economic downturn? Is that what you’re worried about?”

What would we gain from doing that? He's an A-ranker, not a fool. He'll keep a low profile after taking this information and won't take any actions for some time, so it'd take too long. And if he'll start thinking that we're using them like that then he'll warn whoever else is investigating these troublemakers that we're not worth working with - this our home and reputation here matters.
It seems like nobody knows what exactly is going on, sans the Progenitors (maybe) - so any new information would be welcome. We're in the same boat after all. Just raising awareness of other groups is good for now, gotta set up the groundwork for the counter-conspiracy. The scope of the problem is just too big to take on by ourselves, and we still need to gain more clout and raise our rank before we can take action.

You frown. It’s not the most optimal way to lead into things, but...it’ll work. “Not quite. Something’s going on. Something major. We don’t know what, but we did manage to find this.” With that, and a careful look from Izumi, you show him your list. “It’s names and what we’re pretty sure are threat levels from a number of Outgoer groups. There’s another list with more detail we’ve got once you’re done with that one, if you want to see it.”

He takes his time perusing the paper, and he silently motions for the other one, as well. With only a bit of hesitation, Izumi gives that one over too, and he takes the same careful time with it as before. When he’s finished with both, his face is full of confusion. “Well...I must admit, I’m certainly curious why this exists in such a fashion. I mean, I’m positive most companies have some sort of competitive research in their files, but this seems a bit too…”

“Comprehensive?” you venture.

“Well, I’m not sure if even that’s the word, but I suppose it’s close enough,” you concede. “I’m worried there’s something going on behind the scenes, but I don’t think we’re really in a position to do anything about it.”

“And neither are we, to be frank,” is Experyia’s immediate response. “As I stated, we’re working on climbing the ranks ourselves- while we certainly have capable individuals, as a group we’re yet to prove ourselves in the eyes of the masses. Really, I’m impressed that whoever’s making this list sees us as a group worthy of as much concern as they do.”

“Yeah, popularity doesn’t seem to be a factor, otherwise the big three would be there,” you note.

“Right...I WAS wondering about that, myself. You think perhaps they’re involved?” he hazards. “I’d be...a bit surprised if Interdiction were involved, if I’m being honest. For all that I didn’t like my time there, they didn’t strike me as shady, perse.”

You hadn’t considered that, honestly. “Not sure. Instinct says no, but I can’t say that with any certainty.”

“Well, I suppose it doesn’t much matter,” he shrugs. “Best we could do is get the word out, but I worry that’d be a risky course of action.”

“Same. I just thought that since we’ve talked before, you’d at least be one group we could share it with.” you opine.

He sighs, nodding. “Fair enough. I know how hard it can be to keep something like this to yourself, without any kind of possible commiseration. Still…I would imagine we would need a deal more clout and influence before we could stage any kind of investigation or accusation.” He takes a moment to consider things, though he isn’t long before he speaks again. “I myself am Rank A, as you know- but A is not A+, and there are others that nonetheless are far more influential than I, especially now. All of my compatriots are C rank, mind, so they’re of no help, either.”

(cont.)
>>
>>4389012
“Really?” That surprises you. “Not one B Rank?”

“Not a one,” he confirms. “At least not now. We have high hopes, but otherwise we’re still working towards even that goal. Really, I’ve heard you and your organization’s name on a few lips, so I’d suspect you’re more influential than I am at the moment, really.”

THAT raises an eyebrow. You’re popular? At least somewhat? Huh. Yeah, guess you’ve done a few things here and there, but you never really registered it making much difference outside of jobs…

And on that, he smirks. “In which case, I daresay I think it’d be good to hitch OUR wagon to yours, at least a bit.”

A klaxon goes off in your head- not a red alert, but at the least a heads up. “How so?” Izumi asks, beating you to it.

He shrugs, though his smile says something else. “How else? Perhaps one of you could accomplish a job in tandem with us one day- that or at the very least perhaps be willing to execute an assignment under our banner- temporarily, at least. As a show of friendship and collaboration. Would raise both of our stocks- ourselves for being able to land a rising star such as yourselves, your own simply by dint of performance. Naturally you’d get the lion’s share of the payment. Can’t say it sounds like a bad deal.”

You find yourself considering it...it’s not exactly something you haven’t done before, and as long as they split the pay fairly, you can’t say it’s unappealing on the whole...still, there’s something that clicks in your head as you and Izumi mull it over, and you find yourself voicing it before you can stop yourself: “What exactly do your people know about the circumstances of that group's disbandment?”

“Not a lot, I’m afraid,” he shrugs. “That’s part of why we thought it odd in the first place. Seemed like they’d have a good start, then suddenly they’re just...done. It’s just rumor and hearsay at the moment, but one of the popular ones is that they botched one too many early jobs and couldn’t pay the cost for them- tried to fly too high, too soon. I don’t buy that one, personally- any half-decent startup knows that you have to start out smaller scale, no matter the crew makeup. Another theory is that they’d tried to expand too quickly- make too big of an HQ, too many little things to make themselves seem bigger than they were, and too little starting capital. Couldn’t recoup costs fast enough, and so that was that too early. Me? My bet is their patron backed out. The Deal-Makers are incredibly powerful, but by all I’m aware even THEY don’t have the power of precognition...at least not to any appreciable effect. Might have been they simply learned something they didn’t like and canned the funding right before it got serious.”
“Hm…” Well, it’s not impossible, and it puts a damper on things, but you wouldn’t call that angle closed just yet. But for now… “Fine, we’ll shelve that for now. As for your proposal...got anything particular in mind?”

He smiles. “I’ve a couple jobs you might be interested in…but one in particular we’d been wondering how to work out, as we hadn’t wanted to just let it lie. A bit close to home, both in a good and, er...bad way...” With that, he takes out his own FutureSight, and pulls up the listing.

“Hm.” You have to consider it. It’s not a bad job, but...well, perhaps you might not exactly be the best for the job, considering it’s a ‘save the world’ gig...and by how interested Izumi’s looking, you have to think the answer’s pretty obvious. “I dunno if it’s entirely my bag, buuuuut…” you look towards Izumi, the unspoken question obvious.

She doesn’t take long to pick up on it, either. “I daresay this would be something I would be most willing to undertake,” she announces, taking the FutureSight in her hands and thumbing through the details. Judging by Experyia’s expression, he doesn’t see the harm in you passing it off to her, either. “I’ll be sure to assist in delivering these peoples to my best extent.”

“Excellent, excellent,” he nods in approval. “Glad to hear it. We appreciate the assistance. As for finding out anything else...we’ll try to keep our ear out, but I warn you we can promise little, our situation being as precarious as it is. Any other questions for now?”

“Actually, I was wondering if you could give us any advice about making it to Rank A, maybe share some experience with us,” you admit. Seeing as it’s your goal, no reason to not get any help where you can.

Considering the issue, he nods. “Right. Well, the most obvious thing I’d say is to be consistent,” he starts out. “If your powerset isn’t immediately A-Rank worthy, it’s a lot of running B Rank quests with the occasional A Rank thrown in if you really want to be considered in position for a ranking up. Not necessarily by yourself, of course!” he quickly clarifies. “But I also wouldn’t suggest trying an A Rank job with more than two others if it’s to be weighed strongly. Two to three. That’s assuming you’re all B Ranked, of course. If you’ve got an A-Rank to work with, I’d strongly suggest keeping it to just them. That’s honestly how I managed. Went on a number of 2-person jobs with one of Interdiction’s A-Team, thanks to my charisma, and made it up that way alongside my own efforts.”

You’ll have to file that away- seems like there’s going to be an element of risk. “Huh. Interesting. Anything else?”

“Quite. Namely, getting on well with your handler. I was in Pip-Pip’s good graces for a while and stayed there before she agreed to submit my name for rank reevaluation. Ah- that was my Deal Maker handler, for reference. Quite affable, really. Adores painting, loves artwork in general.” He sighs in fond remembrance. “I tell you, were it not for...well, personal reasons, I’d have stayed; she’s a delight, extradimensional boss or not. Ah, but I’m getting away from the subject. Keep them on a friendly level; don’t ask them for too much, be sure to thank them if they help you out...that sort of thing. Doesn’t hurt.”

...well. Okay, that one might be a bit hard.

“Aside from that,” he continues, “I’d say just keep at it. If you can, keep striving to better yourself- in tactics, in power, whatever. Just don’t settle. Especially when you actually GET the rank- you have to work to keep it, so it’s a process that doesn’t stop,” he warns. But that warning quickly gives way to an honest smile. “But, you’ve got a look about you that says you getting there is more a ‘when’ than ‘if’...so I wouldn’t worry too much.”

“Ah...thanks.” You’re surprised he seems to have that kind of faith in you for being barely acquaintances.

“Indeed, we’re honored by your praise,” Izumi adds on. “I believe it’s time for myself, at least, to prepare for this mission, however…”

“Oh, of course! Shall I expect you back come tomorrow?” He asks. She nods, and you both stand to leave. “Then it’s been a pleasure meeting with you both, and I’ll be certain to keep our talks between us,” he offers as he hands back the papers. “Be well out there, won’t you?”

“You too,” you offer, as he sees you both out.

- Equipments that give passive combat stat bonus, but are ALWAYS up and active, all the time. Pretty sure Nura has a lot of those.
- Actual good conventional guns.
- Defensive gear
+ Magic dampening vests.

“After a bit.” you mention. “Got one or two things I still want to do around here before I’m gone again.” Namely, weapons and gear.

She nods. “Fair enough. Need any help? I suppose it’d be good to go on a bit of a run myself, though from what I saw of the world, it’s unfortunately less amenable to automatic firearms. Steampunk with magic, using an odd variety of...well, they called it ‘modified formula magic’.” Sounds interesting, but all the more reason she’s more suited to it than you. She can handle that kinda magic better.

“If you want. I’m probably gonna take a look at seeing what’s possible in the realm of anti-magic, maybe see if Owlia and Nura have anything new going before I leave.” The duo were quite a pair, as it turns out- Owlia taking the lead as expected, but Nura was a fair hand herself- she was still learning about the more modern technologies, but she was a quick study. With a second pair of hands (not counting her robotic limb backpack) plus her new robotic helper (which she had deemed Renny), things were better in her neck of the scientific woods- she got more sleep, at least. Although Owlia had begged off researching anything new for a while simply due to her backlog, she’d claimed to have made strides in a few works...and of course there were her side projects like her enhanced Murmur Stones.

The rest of the day is essentially planning out a shopping list for tomorrow, and while there’s much to look at in the future, for the time being, it’s probably best to just hear out the nerds.

“Yo,” you offer as you walk into the laboratory area. It’s always buzzing with some kind of energy, though you’d not guess which.

“Greetings, Ms. Styles! Technician Harkin and Assistant Technician Qahtan are currently unavailable, with the estimated time of return unavailable, but before the end of the day. May I inquire as to the purpose of your visit today?” The first thing to greet you is a small (as in half your size) girl, with silver blue skin and one long, metallic ponytail. Her head is...a bit big for her body, as are the eyes, but they convey expression well enough, and said head is framed by a pair of large glasses (why she needed those, you have no clue). A white laboratory coat and small black dress shoes complete a look that screams ‘cute child genius’. This is what you had ended up buying, at the end of the day. Renny.

You think it’s a bit overkill, but Owlia liked her enough and Nura was just amazed by her. Cylica...well, she just saw it and harrumphed, so you’re not sure what her opinion on it is. It doesn’t matter, anyway. The little thing works fine with the two of them, and it’s at least very well programmed, though not of true sapience. Prima and Jago had been fooled until Prima bothered to perform a deep scan for the sake of her computorial health- she had then admitted a sense of ‘unease’, followed by ‘a strange feeling that I cannot quite describe at the moment, but one I believe is most similar to guilt.’ They’d not interacted with her since, not that she cared...you think.

Even you weren’t sure how close to sapience the thing was. Fooled you more than once. “Just here to look into some possibilities for a potential job,” you respond.

“Never fear! I have been authorized to answer any and all questions about current known projects!” Her smile’s almost precision tailored to be just cute enough to be endearing, but not overbearing.

Is Mana Armor the Anti-magic Armor that the alien used from the Seither world by chance?

I searched as many places as I could find for inspiration, and there’s a bunch of armors that can absorb mana for a predetermined use, and a lot that can nullify mana, and a lot that can amplify or increase mana, but NOTHING that can absorb it from a focused form, reconvert it to baseline ambient, and then use it to supplement or restore the user’s own mana all in one! If I create something like THAT...”

Well that confirms commercial grade anti-magic armours exist, as well as mage armours. And if anything the one she's creating is a high tier combo of both and with high physical defense to boot.

Maybe we can show it off when it's done to advertise SES.

“How’re the longer-term projects of her coming along?” you decide on. You know she had a few that she’d been poking at that weren’t on the rental block just yet; might as well get a progress report on those.

“Ah!” Her posture shifts slightly, and you can tell you’re in for a recital. “Current progress on projects deemed ‘long-term…’ Hmmm...first, there is the project entitled ‘Project Omega Armor’. She had continued to make strides in her attempts to make a omni-absorbant set of body armor. Intake types are still being tested. Stability upon intake remains wildly fluctuating, and output remains inconsistent. She has attempting to unify this with her research with the mana-absorbant suit that you supplied her with. She finds the material fascinating, although she is having some difficulty determining the nature of the fabric, and what allows it its intrinsic properties. Attempts to replicate the structure of the fabric so far are inconclusive, but still progressing. Ultimately, the suit remains in research phases.”

“Damn.” You were kinda hoping she’d made more progress on it, but...well, it’s not like it wasn’t a small order. “Keep going? Didn’t she have some other armor she was working on, too?”

“The ‘Artificer-Pattern High-Impact Armor, ‘John’ Variant’ is currently in final alpha testing stages,” she explains, which is pleasant news. “Live Beta Testing will be available in approximately twelve more days.” Ah. That’s not bad. Glad something’s coming out of that. “Experimentation with the substance known as ‘Seither’ is currently ongoing. It has been determined to grant heightened mental processing speeds for a brief time, as well as allowing for quicker mana flow through the body, allowing for increased casting speeds in magically inclined beings. I have been instructed to warn that the substance has been determined to have low-to-mild addictive qualities in strongly magical beings as well. I believe Technician Harkin described it as ‘like a serious shot of extra caffeinated coffee, but with a crash at the end’.” Ah. ‘Mild’ might be the keyword there. Maybe you just weren’t huffing enough of it to have an effect.

Also she played a recording of Owlia saying that and it kinda took you off guard. “Don’t play recordings like that again, just say the words. Anyway, keep going.”

“Understood. The substance Invonium has been under the purview of Assistance Technician Qahtan. Current research indicates that it has an unstable makeup and severely mutagenic properties on organic substances and mana-dependent organisms, including in gaseous form. It has been thus determined ‘extremely dangerous’ and has thus been determined to only be researched when able to be exclusively focused upon. No active experiments have been undertaken as of yet.”

Hm. Well, that’s something. “Thanks.”

“Anything new in Owlia’s R&B?” you ask. “I know she’d been working on a couple of things…”

“Yes!” she confirms. “Apart from improvements on several current beta-build devices, she and Ms. Qahtan have added two new devices that have deemed ready for field testing:

>Mana Spyder Mark 2 (x3): This device of Nura’s creation is meant to be part spy drone, part mana battery. The creature can be remotely controlled via an armbrace, and even has visual feeds. It’s fueled by mana crystals, and can climb all but the sheerest and slipperiest of surfaces. It can also discharge mana in bursts for self defense, or for other purposes if need be. At least, it is stated to be such intent.

>Bounce Crystal (x1): This is a secondary crystal intended for further usage in alternate systems. The crystal, when primed via mana infusion, allows for repulsion of kinetic force to an extreme level. However, the force is multiplied, meaning collateral damage may occur. This crystal has little to no effect against elemental techniques or magic in general, however.

>Synth-Seither Pill (x6): This is an experimental pill of concentrated synthetic Seither. It is less potent than the original substance, but allows for similar effects if taken. It is estimated that the substance currently works at a 2:1 ratio of effectiveness- that is, two pills of concentrated Synthetic Seither would equal roughly one pill of organic Seither. She would like descriptions of its effects.

“Alright, thanks.” You’ll come back later, once they’re back as well. Might as well get some better information from the source (and pick a job proper) before you commit to anything.

“I will inform the ladies of your visit and intentions!” Renny announces, before bidding you farewell. With that, you take your leave, considering. You COULD probably just buy something, but...well, you’re not sure if it’ll entirely be necessary, and even then, you’re kinda hoping you can just hold out until she’s finished. Still, if not, it’s an option. And that’s just regarding defensive measures. Offensively...well, you’ve got improved options.

The weapon that you’d commissioned from Grizzi and Cella had turned out interesting, to say the least. She’d called it a ‘Morph-Blade’, and the thing was...well, to be frank, it was something else. Still rather large and thick, it’d been reshaped to have jagged, tearing teeth on one end, and a small yet sharp curve in the back, explained to be for ‘hooking’ weapons or people. Not to mention, the whole reason for its namesake- the blade itself had been reattached to a long, curved handle that she insisted was more ergonomic than the one it had before, and it apparently had a new core that the metal warped around...sort of. With the pull of a longtrigger, it would shift from a massive blade, to flipping back in on itself (you had to watch your hand placement) and form a more handsaw like shape, or perhaps a shield, considering the size of the blade itself. On the other hand, pushing the trigger instead would shift it into something more resembling a hammer, with a couple of the pieces twisting, interlocking according to the sawtooth grooves, and allowing the thicker core piece to hold it all together. It was an impressive piece, you had to admit, and initial trials proved it to be sturdy enough.

With this thing in your back pocket, it’s a bit more physical oomph if necessary, if not perhaps the most efficient thing. Still, may have its uses.

>Next task on your list?

As good as it might well be, you’re starting to get a bit worried about certain possibilities. Namely, anti-magic weapons. It’s a bit worrisome, stuff like that Ivonium, but if you have some way to mitigate it, then best to take it asap. At least to just have for emergencies.

And that means a visit to Kowalski tomorrow.

----------------------------

The morning comes, and with it, your patronage. You know that anti-magic weaponry isn’t his forte, but he should still have a few things on tap. You’re quick to ask the man, and when you do…

“Antimagic? Hoo, not often I get that kinda request, but yeah, I got a few things in the back. One sec.”

>Shambol AM Semi-Automatic Pistol: This blue colored, long-barrelled semi-auto pistol holds specialized ‘magebreaker’ rounds, which are essentially bullets filled with hypercondensed, volatile mana with an minor explosive tip. The idea is that it scrambles the constructed mana immediately around the projectile, allowing bypass of most weaker to mid-range defensive spells entirely. The rounds are both expensive and not common, though, meaning you can’t just waste shots with this.
>Magazine: 12 Rounds.
>Cost: 8 Lotes.

>Alice Arms ‘Wonderland’ Heavy Sniper-Rifle: Tried and tested in field conditions time and again, this heavy-duty sniper rifle uses coilgun technology and specially crafted, magic-absorbant bullets to generate enough punch to tear through most magic defenses impossibly quick.
>Magazine: 1 Round (10 Bullets)
>Cost: 9 Lotes

>Draining Combat Knife: A simple, 6-inch serrated knife that has a spell woven into it that allows it to absorb mana via impact on the edge, allowing you to ‘cut’ through non-elemental mana. It also seems to energize the blade as well, allowing for sharper cuts to an extent.
>Cost: 4 Lotes

>Siphon Grenades: These are small, baseball-sized and shaped devices that apparently each project a brief yet potent ‘draining’ effect in a 5 foot radius for about 10 seconds, after which they fizzle out. He admits he doesn’t have many of them- a pack of six and that’s it.
>Cost: 3 per grenade.

“...that’s it?” you find yourself asking.

“Hey, there’s so many magical folks around here, anti-magic ain’t much asked for! I got what I got!” Well...that’s fair enough, you suppose.

After careful consideration...well, you don’t really have many options, obviously, so might as well get the strongest thing you can. You’re not great with sniper rifles, but it’ll have to do. You decide it’s probably good to get more bullets as well, just to be safe. They’re an extra 2 Lotes, but likely worth it.

You take the time to restock on your Moleworm Mines as well- you’ve been out of theme for a minute and kept saying you’d pick some up but never got around to it. In addition, the draining combat knife seems like a nice holdout weapon as well. It’s not horribly big, and anti-magic or not, a knife’s a knife. Although… “Say, what are the limits on this thing? Like, cutting power and time and whatnot?”

“Only gets so sharp- enough to cut through metal easy enough.” he mentions. “And it can’t absorb forever. I couldn’t tell you the exact limits but it ain’t a ton. Doesn’t last too long, either, maybe a couple minutes per charge.” Ah. Not great, but still worthwhile, you suppose. “Anywho, that’ll be all? Can ring ya up now.”

You agree, and with that, the transaction’s done with.

>Current Motes: 60.50

"What about anti-magic armor?" you inquire.

"Anti-Magic armor?" He looks for a moment as though he wants to ask why, but ultimately doesn't, shaking his head. "Nothin' in at the moment. Had a few pieces that were magic-resistant or mana-suckers, but not right now- got sold off. Check in another day, might have something for ya." Damn. Whatever works I feel, as long as we get to sleep on a treasure pile without our overlord bothering us. Hopefully he has done his homework.

fiiiine were doing monstergirl. Im for ver two.

In this episode our anti-heroine bribes the local nobles by letting em' touch her tail.
>>
To bad we don't have nothing to guve Miranda a tail. But hopefully the magic will give it to her.

so here's a sketch of dragon girl Miranda or an interpretation of the meme set.
The tail is actually the fateweaver scarf making an illusion of a tail.
>>
>>4398077
Man that's badass
>>
>>4398077
I still think we would require to get the cat claw gloves if we want clawed hands like a dragon. But them i recall thay due to the level of intimidation randa got claws in that summoning school world.
>>
>>4398052
Dragons are a very versatile categorization, and tails, though I'm unable to think of an example right now, are not strictly required. I think.
>>
>>4398312
I just want the tail for the classic scene of slamming it against the floor and making a dent. Or have Randa flay around and bump think with the tail accidently and people think she is annoyed.
>>
Uh, don't forget to go back to the nerds to get some stuff. We should borrow some enchanted jewelry from Nura too.

Okay, so it's looking like...

Also borrow Lori's Mana dampener. In the last crossover, it was used against the target's mind control thing. Maybe it could be useful if the client uses mind control bullshit to get us to stay.

Thinking about it, what would be best for something to be working under an evil overlord? Calls himself the King of Shadow, trying to get some ancient artifact or some other...probably a magician of some stripe, likely some sort of dark wizard or maybe even an elemental being. Will need to reflect that. Hmm...well, it also sounds like you’re going to be doing a lot of the heavy lifting for him, too. So likely going to need to be intimidating, too. Now, intimidating and shadowy/scary...ah.

It hits you out of nowhere, and honestly you can’t help but give a little snort at it. It’s classic, in a way. After all, sorcerers typically are supposed to have dragons or something like that at their beck and call, right? Well, not entirely a dragon, you don’t think, but dragonish.

Good enough.

With that settled, you’re just about set. As you make sure you’ve got your pack and head to your HQ, you notice Mono sitting nearby talking with Owlia and Nura- you’re not sure about what, as they all turn to you once they hear the door open. “Yo!” Mono greets. “Pretty sick armor. Heading out?”

“Yeah, in a bit,” you confirm. “Owlia, mind letting me borrow a few things?”

“Sure thing! Whatcha lookin’ for?” Good question…

I forgot, how many items we're allowed to borrow? Was it 5?

>>4399164
>Sigil TransPortal Plate Pair (Beta).
>x2 Synth-Seither Pill.
>x1 Shield Crystals.
>x1 Assault Crystals.
>Mana Extractor.
>Revitalization Barrier.

Not sure if we'll have the time to test all of these out, but the transportal is a must for me.
>>
>>4399170
...I actually want to say three plus two crystals. It's been a minute.
>>
>>4399164
>Revitalization Barrier
>Levitation Crystal
>Protection Sigil Plate - magic protection
>Synth-Seither Pills x2

>Use the Meditation Room
>>
>>4399164
>2 Shield crystals
>2 levitation crystal (just in case)
>Sigil Transportal plate
>Synth-seither pill
>Operation Z1 (fuck the mages)
>Mana Spyder mark 2 (for extra spying and scounting)

>>4399181
Oh, then I'll switch >>4399172 to

>Sigil TransPortal Plate Pair (Beta).
>Revitalization Barrier.
>Protection Sigil Plate.
>x1 Assault Crystals
>x2 Levitation Crystals
>>
>>4399181
>>4399183
switching one pill to
>Assault Crystal
levitation crystal is a must, since we can't actually fly (yet)
>>
>>4399187
>>4399189
The crystals are rechargeable, I don't see why we should bring two of the same type
>>
>>4399190
I mean, we can't usually, but we can jump real good, and isn't that basically a form of flying? That's what samurai jack taught me.
>>
>>4399191
They do? Then I'll switch one levitation crystal to shield >>4399189
>>
I know operation Z1 is experimental, but I really want to get more improvement done for the "fuck mages" tool.
Miranda should ask how long does this thing will work and how to turn it off.

>>4399193
It doesn't hurt to be super prepared.
>>
>>4399187
Ok changing my vote a bit:
>Shield crystals
>levitation crystal
>Assault crystal
>Sigil Transportal plate
>Operation Z1
>Mana Spyder mark 2
>>
>>4399164
i'll take what >>4399189 >>4399197 wrote, + 2 pills if allowed. Since we're leading armies, the portal plate will help a lot with logistics.
We can also test the barrier on our minions like any evil leader would.
>>
>>4399208
>>4399164
And use meditation room before we go.
>>
>>4399197
hmm, at least that what I used to think before. The description has changed a bit.
>>4399164
are the crystals and plates rechargeable? I remember there used to be some time limits on some of them, and it wouldn't make sense to take shards forever if they aren't going to work after one use.
>>
>>4399164
+meditation room pls
>>
>>4399204
The original X4 were calibrated to handle a certain amount of mana, we can just overload them in a pinch, though Owlia wouldn't like that.
>>
I don't think we want to use the plates for ourself, maybe we can get the evil overlord to set up a prison that we can YEET people into for him.
>>
>>4399238
Methinks leaving interplanar techs unsupervised in front of an evil wizard overlord isn't a good idea
>>
>>4399164
Wait I fucked up, I forgot to remove shit.

Oookay, seems like

>Transportal Plate
>Revitalization Barrier
>Syn-Seither Pills (x2)
>Levitation Crystal
>Assault Crystal
?
>>
>>4399253
I'd swap up the pills for a shield crystal, but that's fine too.
>>
>>4399253
>>Operation Z1
>Revitalization Barrier
>Syn-Seither Pills (x2)
>Levitation Crystal
>Assault Crystal

IMO Setting up the tester is a hassle on the teleporter and I don't think we plan on moving anything big, or anything a lot through it, so I'd rather unleash the Z1 on someone.
>>
>>4399253
I'd swap Transportal Plate for Z1 - usually our clients don't want us to commit atrocities.
>>
>>4399253
Portal to Z1 for me too then
>>
>>4399253
Z1. Swapping out fast travel for a nuke seems fair, and I'm sure our lord is going to have some Gate spells prepared.
>>
Right, I think we're going with

>Operation Z1
>Revitalization Barrier
>Syn-Seither Pills (x2)
>Levitation Crystal
>Assault Crystal

Locking in and writing.
>>
Miranda calmly recording the Z1 fucking people up for science purposes just seems morbidly funny to me.
>>
>>4399288
Don't forget, we have to recover it after the rampage too. And it's more fragile than the original.

I propose unleashing it on a mage nest while we snipe high-grade threats with the Wonderland.
>>
>Revitalization Barrier
>It uses a combination of nanotechnology (so fascinating!) and crystal energies to provide a mana barrier that effuses healing mana...or something like that.

If this thing messes up, the recipients will probably either melt down, flesh and bones, or they'll get super cancer. Yeaaah.
>>
>>4399320
we'll just tell them that our crystals are too strong for them
>>
>>4399277
Ultimately, you figure it’s probably a decent opportunity to try some of her new and improved stuff out- along with some of the old. Operation Z1 in particular gets her excited, when you express intent to use it. “Oh boy oh boy oh boy! Okay, now, be SURE to pop the button on the side here, you’re gonna see it split a little bit, then just pulse like, a smidge of mana into it. Once it glows, THEN throw them like, at LEAST 4 meters in front of you when you let go of the button- s’like a grenade! Remember to get the HECK outta dodge, though, just to be safe. Or at least ten meters, I’ve set up a passive scan- agh, nevermind. Point is DON’T BE CLOSE. It SHOULDN’T tag you but I don’t wanna risk that it WILL. Yet.”

“Got it.” Doesn’t seem too complicated. “And the barrier?”

“Yeeeah, no seriously maybe cut a rabbit or a bear or something and throw them in it first,” she grimaces. “Haven’t really focused on this one lately, sooo still need data.”

...Woof. “Right then. On that note, if you’ve got any last minute adjustments or the sort, go and do them. I want to spend some time focusing myself before I set off.”

“Right-O! They’ll be waiting for you outside!” she salutes as you head off to the Meditation Room. It’s soothing, you have to admit- also lets you get more ‘in tune’ with how you’re going to present yourself. Especially considering this guy seems to be all about presentation…there’s a few ways to go about this one, you suspect.

>Meditation Room Bonuses Applied- Temporary Mana Cost Reduction, Additional Suggested Dialogue Options Possible.

Your mind’s clear as it can get right before a job, after an hour in quiet contemplation, consideration, and focus. Alright…

The tools are all gathered. You’ve got your outfit, your gear, and your mind straight.

“Alright. I’m all set.”

“Good luck out thereeeee! Be carefulllll!” Pft. You have to, if you want to make A Rank.

With a flash of light, you’re gone.
