YEAR 1050
"Fifty years have passed since i became despot of the laconians, and brought them from a backwater vassal to major power, i have defeated numerous enemies in my path, from the Tulunids, the Trakians, the Memlukes, and more. I have created numerous master works of art, and i have extended the light of Sol through the world. Yet, at the end of the day, for all my achievements, i'm still a mortal human, and so, goodbye everyone".

With those words, despot Rhaddia "The greatest" of Laconia, passed away, after struggling during months with an severe illness, he died in the first day of the year 1050, like that fortune teller predicted years ago, at his burial ceremony, numerous heads of state and their representative from around the sea of light came to mourn, including Jaysh of Tuludia and his family, and Emperor Constance of the new Byzaian empire. Not to mention his co-despot Leo, now the senior despot of the despotate, and his eldest son Desmon, now 35, and ready to take on the mantle of his father.
>>
>>4362107

While Rhaddia may have died, and his spirit ascended to the heavens, that doesn't mean that this is the end, for there's his son desmon, to follow up on his footsteeps and continue building the power of the despotate.

Yet, the grace of Sol, appears to be weaker on him and it was on his father. Not all men are equally destined for greatness, and it appears that he will have to deal with many crisis and though times ahead.

And that, cause Sol, has selected another person, to be blessed with it's graciousness, and bring light to his corner of the world.

It is you to select, however, which story shall we follow next.

By the way, if we were to play with another nation, we would be doing it in a new region, that being that of the dreaded sea of dark, continuing on from the year 1050

>B)Switch to another nation.

I think switching would be best. Laconia looks like it's going to be able to streamroll most of it's competition right now. Also I'd like to see more of the world, and see it from something that's not from the Solist-Laconia perspective.

Alright then, as per your wish, we shall leave the Laconians and the white sea to venture into the wonders and mysterious of the sea of dark.

The dark sea, also known of the sea of dark, or Marea Neagra, is a large sea conected to the sea of light through the straits of Byzantion in the byzaian empire. Infamous thanks to it's dark and stormy waters, full of pirates, and it's lack of civilization.

Compared to the numerous civilizations and noble empire that had littered the sea of light's shore through the centuries. the dark sea and it's shores remains an unexplored and untamed wild place, full of barbarian and nomadic tribes, as well as adventurers and daring merchants, seeking to tame it's waters.

Within this land, there are many people and kingdoms looking to control it, either to civilize the place in the name of their gods, build an mighty empire, or to sack and subjugate anyone that stand in their way. These people are:

>The restored Byzaian empire (Purple), lead by Constance the restorator, he wants to restore the glory of the old empire and to make it into a force to be reckoned with, however, he knowns that expanding into the laconian dominated white sea, like the trakians once tried to, would be an mistake, and so, he looks towards the south with ambitious eyes.

>The Empire of pontus (light blue), lead by Alexios the blessed. Having gained independence from the trakians, the people of pontus, lead by their new emperor, want to make their own mark upon the world, by spreading the light of sol through these dark water, as well to create an new empire worthy of competing with their neighboors.

>The Trakian kingdom, (Dark salmon), having been kicked off Byzantion by constance, the surviving trakians retreated back to their southern homelands to lick their wounds. Beaten but not broken, these trakians aspire to reconquer their old empire. However, trapped between the resurgent byzaians and the barbarians tribes from the south, they will have a hard time doing so.

>The voivodeships of Dachia, (dark gold), these wild and rowdy mountain people, have had endure numerous conquerors and invaders in the past, however, with the decline of the trakians, they now find themselves free for the first time in centuries, to either raid or conquer as they wish.

>Principiate of the Goths, (Dark blue), Having migrated from the cold north to settle in the warm waters of the dark sea, this nation of raiders and pirates, seeks not only to plunder, but also to create a new homeland for their people. In adition to that, while they might be solists, the principate is neither of the dawning or rising sun, for they follow an almost heretical denomination of it called the dark sun.

>Skithian Khaganate, (yellow), a nation of nomands and herders coming from the far west, this confederation of nomads have come to settle in the fertile plains of sarmatia, and coverted to the lunarian faith, yet, their thirst for raid and conquest remains.

(Alright then, don't worry i have an idea.)

A long time ago, before the death of Rhaddia, the goths and alani were nothing but just two barbaric tribes on the shores of the dark sea, battling and raiding with each other and with their neighboors for loot and plunder. It was a simple life for these simple people, as it had been for the last centuries of so. Yet, what neither of them knew, was that things would change drastically for them, and that their destinies would be intertwined.

In the year 1025, on the darkest of days, during the middle of a solar eclipse, a pair of twins were born on the Gothic-Alani border to a humble and poor mixed family.

Shortly after their birth, their parents died from a skithian incursion that was happening at the time, forcing the two boys to live in the wild for many days, before each of them was rescued by a Gothic sailor and a Alani herder, separating the twins, as each of their adoptive guardians brought them further inland of their respective nation.

What neither of their new guardians knew at the moment, was that the two of them were marked to be destined for greatness, not by sol nor luna, mind you, but by the dark gods themselves.

The names of the two boy were Alkas and Abaddon, those who were destined to bring a new age for the dark sea.

But before can talk about them, let us talk about their rise to power, beggining with abbadon, whose hair was as gold as his fortunes, and his eyes as green as his ambition.

After being brought to the city of theodoro by his sailor step-father. Abbadon spent most of his youth learning the ropes of being a good warrior and sailor, going on multiple raids and bringing the best loot, eventally becoming a strong, corageous, if a bit dim, man. Rapidly rising up the ranks of the army to become a general of his own at the young age of 24

Near the end of the year of 1049, taking advantage of the current leader's weakness unpopularity after a failed war, and with most of the army support, he executed a coup , deposing the king, taking up his place, and moping up those loyal to him.

Now, king and prince of the goths, Abaddon, must stabilize the internal situation of his realm, lest it hold him back on his ambitions.

Since the entire point of his coup was to demostrate that he ws an stronger and better leader than the one you replaced, Abaddon decided that is first order as king, was to launch a raid on the pontics, to and bring loot to the nation.

The raid was a sucess, bringing some much needed wealth and influence to his cause, and with a couple of bribes to the right people, Abaddon had secured internal support, even if the kingdom was still prettt unstable.
>Influence goes from mild to decent
>Court goes from unhappy to neutral.
>>
>>4362515
Following his successful raid against pontus, Abaddon proceeded to review the army he had inherited from the previous king. While not as good as he expected for them to be, he was confident that he would make his army the best of the land.

With most of the gothic army composed of infantry, one would think that Abaddon would focus on improving them, but no, for he instead, focused on improving his cavalry, as he believed that no army should have a weak link, dragging everyone else down.

>Gothic knights discipline goes from 4 to, defense goes from 5 to 6

Either way, having now reviewed his army, Abaddon moved towards something that he himself admited he was not good at, the economy, for even despite how small and simple the economy of the principiate was, he sometimes struggled to comprehend it, that said, nevertheless he made an effort into improving it.

Economy of Gothia

>Fishing, size 4/10, rudimentary(0.5), profit 2◘
>Farming, size 2/10, basic (1), profit 2◘

>Taxing, Medium, Inefficient: Revenue lost 1◘

In adition to the complexities of the internal economy, the principiate adquired most of their money through the use of raiding, which, while effective, only worked as long as you were stronger than the other, and you had enemies to fight.

With farming being the most technologically advanced fields, that the goths had in their economy, Abaddon wanted to improve on that area, with the intention of becoming rich through the use massive farming complexes.

However, that idea failed as soon as he began working on it, as a particulary nasty winter, prevented him to construct more farms, and even buring some under the snow. That said, not wanting to give up in his ambitions, he instead ordered the displaced farmers to just fish or goat herd while he dealt with the problem.

>Size of goat herding goes from 4 to 5
>Size of fishing goes from 4 to 5
>Size of farming goes from 2 to 1
>Income remains the same.

Either way, having now consolidated his new realm, Abaddon was ready to look outside his domain, however, just before he could do that, he recieved a note from none other than his long lost twin Alkas. Who had now becomed the new highchief of the alani.
>>
>>4362840
With abbadon rise to power stablished, let us look a now at the one his brother Alkas, whose red hair is as bright as his spirit, and his blue eyes as cold as his mind, had.

After leaving with his adoptive father to the inner mountains of Alania, Alkas grew to be an skilled and cunning mind, who used his intellect to work as an silk merchant, becoming one of the most influential persons in the realm, and being invited as an advisor by the king of the Alani for his numerous talents.

However, this was product of nothing but the first of many plots that Alkas would execute over the years, to position himself closer to the king and gain his trust. One day, the elderly and sonless king of the alani, agreed to hold a vote for the confirmation of who should succed him, as per Alkas request, who unsurprisingly won the vote, becoming the prince of the Alani.

Naturally, the king would come to die of illness a couple of years later, making Alkas the new king of the Alani as he always wanted to be. However before he could use his powers as king to manage the army and economy of Alania, he had to first consolidate his political position.

Alkas knew that since neither he was an elder nor an warrior, he wouldn't be able to secure the loyaly either, however, he had in his disposal the tools and methods to sow discord between the two sides, so that he could emerge as an compromise figure, and convice the two give them them power and authority for fear of the other.

>Influence goes from high to very high
>Army goes from disloyal to cold.
>Stability goes from medium to medium-high.

With the realm of politics now pacified, Elkas turned his attention towards the army, who after years of internal conflict, now needed to be rebuilt.

With the army smaller than ever in decades, rebuilding it was one of Alkas top priorities, as he planned to use them to raid and conquer the skithians and pontics, and cement his dominion over the dark sea. Unfortunately for him, however, due to his unpopularity with the warriors casts, only a part of the warriros he asked for came to him.

>1000 Alani horsemen built for a total of 3000

Deciding to deal with the army at a latter date, Alkas focused his attention to the High Chiefdom's which while it was bigger from what you would expect from a barbarian nation such as the alani, it still had some room to grow.

Seeking to improve the economy of his small realm, Alkas decided to import some foreign expertise from the newly resurgent Byzaians in order to impove Alania's mining industry.

Unfortunately for him, however, Emperor Constance wasn't too keen on sharing imperial secrets with such simple barbarians, so Alkas had to plead and plead, in order to recieve the technology he so desired. At the end of the day though, Constance agreed to help the alani by sending them mining equipment, but not before practically robbing the high chiefdown blind.

>Mining goes from rudimentary(0.5) to basic(1), profit goes from 1 to 2.
>The Alani won't begin the game with a treasury.

(well guys, i hope you're liking this new take on the game, i am excited to show you the ideas and scenarios i have prepared, but that will have to wait until tomorrow, see ya)
>>
>>4363390
Either way, having now consolidated his reign over the Alani, Alkas turned his attention towards his western neighboor, the gothi. But more specifically, their new leader, Abaddon, who according to his research, was none other than his long lost twin, and so, with that in mind, he sent him a note.

A few days later

>"So, you're now the new highchief of the Alani right, brother", said Abaddon
>"Yes, and i have too noticed that you're the new gothic king, Ab", said Elkas.
>", Yeah, i ousted the previous king for being a weakling, how did you got in power ?", asked Abaddon.
>"ohh, nothing, i just tricked the highchief to make me his heir, and waited for him to die", Elkas responded.
>"Did you kill him or something ?", replied Abaddon.
>"Oh course not, doing so would have created more problems for me, than just waiting", Elkas replied.
>"Well, either way, why did you summon me brother ?", Abaddon questioned.
>"For a treaty", responded Elkas.

And so, with the meeting a sucess, the two brothers made a pact, to lead their respective nations towards glory together, and look for eachother when the other need it the most.

>Gothia and Alania becomes military Allies
>>
>>4364026
YEAR 1051

With their new pact stablished, the two brothers would work together to lead Gothia and Alania towards greatness, but first, each of them would have to continue to consolidate their position.

With conflict on the horizon, Abbadon made the decision to build a new castle in the Gothic-skithian border, with the clear intent of not only building up his defenses, but also as a show of force agains't the nomads.

Alania

Alkas knew that if he was going to fight agains't the pontics, he would need to match their disciplined and professional forces, and so, for that reason, he proceded to execute a widespread purge of all incompetent, lazy and nepotistic soldiers and commanders in the army. While this made a dent in his numbers, it also increased their overall quality and discipline.

>All units lose 1000 men, all units gain +1 discipline.

Having now gotten rid of the undisciplined rabble, Alkas then proceded to build again his forces from the ground up, making a general call for new recruits, valoring individual talent and expertise instead of high class priviledges and nepotism.

YEAR 1053

With their armies strong and numerous, both Alkas and Abbadon knew that it was time for them to expand their borders, however, even with all their recent sucesses, and combined strenght, they only had enough forces as to take a single opponent at the time, so they had to be careful to choose their target. Which leaves us with two possible options.

>A) Attack the Pontics, Favoured by Alkas, he wants for the dual alliance to make a preemptive strike against the empire of pontus, lest them become a serious thread in the far future. While the rewards would be great, so would the risks, as the Pontics small but well trained army could give them a tough fight.

>B) Attack the Skithians, Favoured by Abaddon, he wants for the dual alliance to get rid of the immediate thread that supposes the Skithian nomads. While that would get rid of these raiders and invaders, doing so, could also be a dangerous gamble, as the Skithians, weak but numerous forces could drown them out.

>B) Attack the Skithians,

After talking about it for a while, both Alkas and Abaddon reached the same conclusion, that the skithian thread must be dealt with, if they were to survive, lest their constant raids and assaults destroy any chance they had to dominate the dark sea. With that said, using a minor raid as an excuse, they declared war on the skithians and gathered their warriors to fight.

>War has been declared between the dual alliance and the Skithian nomads.

>2000 Alani horsemen,2000 alani lancers, 2000 alani swordsmen, and 2000 alani cataphracts will be available to the battle.
>4000 gothic pikemen ,2000 gothic levies, 2000 gothic bands, and 3000 gothic knights will be available to the battle.

That said, having been so focused in the discussion about the target, both Alkas and Abaddon had forgotten about discussing what would their war plan be before they declared war. Meaning that as the Skithian khan gathers his hordes, the two of them will have to set up a war plan and fast.

On one hand they could play defensively, with Abaddon focusing on defense with his new castle while Alkas uses his superior cavalry to attack the skithians in the back. But on the other hand, they could be agressive, with Abaddon launching a naval assault on the skithian's costal towns, while Alkas rushes in with his cavalry to destroy the skithians before they are ready. With another possibily being for Alkas to sow discord among the skithian clans, while Abaddon picks them one by one, avoiding the larger force.

Using the advantage of surprise, and having the first move, abaddon ordered twelve thousand of his men to move in against the skithians before they had a chance of react, and capture as many villages and loot as possible.
The strategy was largely sucessfull early on, with the gothi capturing village after village, unhowever, it turned out that this was a strategy of the skithians, to draw them in, while they executed hit and run attacks at they retreated back to the capital, which now stands close to the gothi front.

Meanwhile, for his part, Alkas decided to use his superior cavalry force to harrass the skithian army and advance deep into their territory. Not expecting to deal with two coordinated attacks at the same time, the skithians retreated back to their capital, ceeding the alani much of the east, but not before fighting back.

The gothi continued on with their march towards the skithian capital, taking and capturing many villages and loot as the marched fowards. But unfortunately for them, however, this was exactly what the skithians wanted as they deliberately left their villages undefended so that the gothi army would become heavy and slow due all the loot, making them vulnerable to more hit and run attacks.

>Gothi capture 20◘ in loot
>Gothi army speed reduced
>Gothi arrive at the Skithian capital
>Gothi lose 500 gothi levies and 500 gothi bands

Rolled 41

At the same as the gothi advance ocurred, Alkas and his alani began to plan an pincer attack against the skithians to deal with their army by attacking them with the gothi in multiple directions, and to surround the capital. The plan went well at first, with Alkas moping up some minor skithian forces, and managing to arrive at the Skithian capital just in time to link up with the gothi.

Unfortunately for him, however, he had realized a rather serious mistake during his manouver, as he overextended his forces to thin in order to reach the capital, puting the alani army at a grave risk of being cut off by the still largely intact skithians.

>Skithians lose 1000 steppe tribesmen.
>Alani arrive at the skithian capital
>Alani army links up with goths
>Alani army becomes spread thin

In such situation, both Alkas and Abaddon, know that they have basically two choices at this point, either they attack and siege the Skithian capital, which while short on heavy defenses, would leave them exposed at the flanks by the skithian army. Or they could decide to first deal with the Skithians left behind, and hope to deal with their capital later.

Knowing that in order to win the war, he would have to break the skithians first, while elevating his own position, Abaddon ordered his men to secure even more loot and to burn and pillage down all the villages and outliying forces they came across as they surrounded the capital, as well as to send back the loot to theodosia. While half of it was intercepted by a skithian raid, they were able to capture some more, but not without paying the price.

While Abaddon was focused on the capital and the loot, Alkas decided to focus his forces into dealing with the Skithian forces they left behind, lest them become an hindrace.

His strategy for dealing with them, was to use hit and run tactics to harrass them and thin their numbers. While this strategy worked initially, the Skithians weren't just sitting idly while this was happening, and so, they counterattacked by ambushing and encircling a full regiment of Cataphracts.

The Cataphracts, of course, weren't going downwithout a fight either, and so, a bloody skirmish ensued, with both sides taking heavy casualties. At the end of the day, though, the Skithians were forced to retread to organize their forces inside the pocket, allowing the Alani to fully encircle them, but not without losing half their cataphrats.

With the capital almost completely encircled, Abaddon decided that if was the best time now to close in and attack the Skitians, while at the same time, leaving them and small gap to let some of them escape so that they wouldn't fight to death.

The battle was intense, with the skithians lauching volleys and volleys of arrows at the gothi, and them forming shield walls to stop them. Eventually though, the gothi arrived at the wooden walls and palisades of their settlement, which they dealt with by setting them on fire, opening an breach, and preparing to enter inside the city.

While some skithians managed to escape from the city, and some gothi were lost during the advance, the gothi now find themselves ready to conquer and sack the place.

With most of the skithian army having fled east, it was time now for Abaddon and Alkas to finally conquer their capital.

Knowing that it would be a hard thing to do, specially with all of it's inhabitants joining up on the defense. They decided that they would have no mercy, and that they would slay anyone that opposed them regardless of age, gender or status. The skithian menace had to die.

And so, with that, what followed was nothing short of a bloody massacre, as the combined gothi-alani force killed, burned and looted everything in their path.

At the end of the day, though, after a though fight, the dual alliance had risen victorious, as the city the khan's royal tent was their's, albeit, not without sacrifice.

With his capital captured and burned, and with most his western territories invaded, the Khan of the skithians, facing an open revolt in his remaining eastern territories, decided that it was time to cut his loses, and migrate east. And so, he sent a letter to Alkaa and Abaddon calling for peace and a truce, surrendering his western territories to them.

Gothia

With most of his army in low numbers due to the war, Abaddon made the decision to replenish it as soon as possible in order to prepare for his next target. Of course, doing so wouldn't be free, as it would cost a lot of money to train and arm those new troops. So to deal with that, he began to implement some minor taxing reforms in the principiate, which while weren't enough to stop tax evasion, it was an start.

Meanwhile, Alkas focused on recruiting more light cavalry to his army, as well as to start the integration of Maeotis by sending alani settlers there, by rewarding warriors with land there to graz and settle.

Gothi

Abaddon knew that Gothia's strenght in the dual alliance was their ability to boast greater numbers to battle that the Alani, and so, since quantity has a quality of it's own, he made the call for more and more warriors to join his army.

>2000 Gothic levies, Gothic bands, and Gothic pikement recruited, alongside 1500 gothic knights free of charge.

In adition to that, he also made the effort into improving the methods by which the principiate herd goats, and how to increase their yield. It took many tries and a few pasture were burned in the process, but at the end of the day, they managed to get the stronger goats to reproduce with each other instead of the smaller ones.

>Goat herding goes from basic(0.5) to improved(1)
>Goat herding goes from size 5/12 to size 3/12

Alani

Meanwhile, Alkas and the Alani focused on further developing their silk trading industry, which were one of their most profitable ones. Unfortunately for them, however, they soon realized that there was a limit on how big they could make it grow, as there was only so much demand for silk at the time. Not to mention that they only controled one node of the silk route.

>Silk trading goes from 4/5 to 5/5

Either way, like the Gothi, most of the alani army had suffered serious casualties during the skithian war, and needed to be replaced. Luckily for Alkas, however, his victories during the war, had brought him the respect and loyalty of the army, something he realized the importance of, as thousands of new warriors came to his banner.

Gothi

With the army expanded to high numbers, Abaddon decided that it was now the time to improve the quality of his troops, starting with the Gothic levies.

To that end, he hired a Laconian military advisor to overseer the training of his troops, and while he did delivered on his job by giving them proper training, his fee for the job was such ridicously high, Abaddon had to give away the entire treasury.

Alania

As this was happening in Gothia, back in Alania, Alkas decided to use some of the captured Skithian bows from the war, to train his Alani horsemen into the art of Horse archery. It took a while to do, but at then end of the year, he had his decent, if a bit more expensive to mantain, horse archer units.

>Alani horsemen (L.cav) (atk 5/def 6/Discipline 6/ Tactics 6/ speed 9/ equip 5) become Alani Horse Archers (Horse Archer) (atk 7/def 3/Discipline 6/ Tactics 7/ speed 10/ equip 5) Upkeep changes from 2 to 2.5

In adition to that, he also tried to make the effort to secure the internal situation of his realm by assassinaing some guys on the council of elders and replacing them with people loyal to him. While the plot worked, and those most opposed to his rule were dead, it also hurt the internal stability of Alania as people dropping dead doesn't inspire much confidence.

Meanwhile, with the war beggining out of nowhere, alkas rushed to build a proper navy to face the pontics, however due to his people inexperience with naval stuff, they could only build some war galleys.

That said, he also worked hard on integrating Maeotis into his confederation, by sending more migrants and nomads to the place. Putting it like with Cimmeria and the gothi. Only one step away from integrating the place.

With war coming once again to the dual alliance, both Abaddon and Alkas must draw their strategy for the conflict for there's many ideas floating around their heads.

Either the Alani focus on holding the line through the mountains of caucasia while the Gothi focus on building their navy for a naval invasion. Or the Alani rush in from the mountains into the pontic shore while the Gothi focus on defending their combined shorelines from any pontic naval attack.

Knowing the pontics would preparing their ships for a naval invasion of Taurica, Abaddon ordered their men to build as many ships as they could to form his own navy, in adition to buying or conscripting many private vessels.
The force that he created, while relatively small, it was an start, for the big fleet he dreamed off.

>New Unit created, Cog, (Light ship) (Atk 4/ Def 4/ Speed 6/ Tactics 5/ Discipline 4/ Carrying capacity 1,000 each) Numbers: 4◘, upkeep 2◘

>4 war galleys (galley) Atk 3/ Def 2/ Speed 8/ Tactics 7/ Discipline 4/ Carrying capacity 500 each) built

Meanwhile, knowing that he couldn't compete with the pontics in either numbers or quality of troops, Alkas made the decision to play defensively and so, ordered his men to build many hill forts inside the caucasia mountains, and to hold the line against any pontic advance.

>Caucasian hill forts built, (+10 to defensive rolls in Caucasia),(upkeep 0.5◘)

Surely enough, this paid off, as the Pontic advance soon stopped a third of the way of their track, as the hit and run tactics, unforgiving terrain, and lack of supplies, killed many of their men.

>Pontus lose 500 Trebizond archers
>Pontus advance stopped.

You will think that this would be the end of their offensive, but the truth was that this was far from the case, as they instead, ordered a naval assault on the Gothic capital theodosia.

While Abaddon could chose to intercept the Pontic navy with his newly created fleet, the thing was that the pontic navy currently outnumbered them two to one, making this a very risky affair, as the gothic navy still needs further preparing.

Knowing that his navy wasn't strong enough to take on the main pontic fleet head on, Abaddon made the decision to let them land uninterrupted near theodosia while he focused on building a bigger fleet.

>The gothi will finish construction next season
>The pontics land uninterrupted

The pontic army that lands near theodosia is rather powerful for his size, for while they are a 10,000 strong forced compare to your 15000 men in the capital, their equipment and training is impresive compared to the Skithians, meaning that taking them out will be a difficult task.

As much as Abaddon wanted to face the Pontics directly, he knew that doing so would lead to a pyrrhic victory at best. And so, with great reluctance but fully determined, he made the move to allow the pontics to move further into Taurica, with the idea of harrasing the pontics as they marched, and cutting of their access to the sea once they came deep enough.

The results the strategy were satisfactory if a bit mixed, as while the Gothi were able to inflict many casualties to the Pontics and cut them from the sea, the Pontics had also sacked and captured many inland villages, stealing 15◘ worth of treasure from the principiate

>Pontics steal 15◘ of treasury from the Gothi

With most of the pontic army encircled and cut of from the sea, Abaddon decided that it was time now for an All-out attack against the pontics in all sides, and so, he gave the order, and personally led the attack.

What followed couldn't be described as anything but a bloody massacre as Abaddon and his soldiers rushed in and killed all soldiers in their path, using the dark of night and the roughness of the Taurican hills to their advantage.

The pontics were absolutely taken by surprise, and weren't able to mount an effective response to the attack, and so, they were decisively defeated by the gothi, albeit not without fighting back, with only a fifth of the army managing to escape.

>Pontics lose 2000 pontic royal cavalry, 1500 trebizon archers, 1500 pontic swordsmen, 1500 pontic peltasts, 1500 pontic pikemen, and 4 scorpions.
>Pontics remaining forces retreat back to the shore
>15◘ in loot recaptured
>Gothi lose 1000 Gothic spears, 1000 Gothic bands, and 1000 Gothic pikemen.

With most of their army absolutely destroyed, the remnants of the Pontic forces decided to flee back to the shore and call for their navy either bring new reinforcement or to transport them back to the homeland, leaving them in a vulnerable position, that Abaddon can choose to exploit,

Having spent most of the las few last months keeping the pontic army busy, the gothi were finally able to finish their naval construction program uninterrupted, doubling the size of the current Gothi navy, in adition to creating a new ship of their own, the Drekkar

>4 war galleys and 4 cogs built for a total of 8 and 8 respectively
>New unit created, Drekkar (Medium ship) (Atk 5/ Def 5/ Speed 6/ Tactics 6/ Discipline 5/ Carrying capacity 1,500 each) Numbers: 1◘, upkeep 2◘

Using his newly created 19-ship strong fleet, Abaddon ordered them to attack and intercept all Pontic reinforcements and transports in the dark sea. Sinking and capturing dozens of pontic ships, and only getting a galley destroyed and a cog damaged in the process

>Pontus lose 6 war galleys and 4 dromons
>Gothi lose 1 war galley and get 1 cog damaged.

With half of their fleet destroyed, their reinforcement sleeping in the bottom of the sea, and facing death and starvation. The remaining 2000 pontic troops decided to give up their arms and weapons and surrender peacefully to the Gothi, making them war prisoners to be ransomed back or put to work if Abaddon desires.

>Remnants of the Pontic invasion force surrender.
>Gothi obtain 2000 war prisoners

Now that the pontic advance has been stopped in both land and sea, it's time now for Abaddon and Alkas to make their own move upon their foes.

With the bulk of the second Pontic army destroyed, and the first one suffering from severe attrition over to the mountains. Alkas determinated that i was time now to launch his counterattack over the Pontic mainlands.

With no reinforcements to help them, the second Pontic army decided that it was for the best of them to retreat back to Colchis, suffering harrasment from the Alani as they fled. However, not seeking to just give up, the pontic commander ordered his men to execute a scorched earth policy, burning all green pastures for the Alani horses, and destroying many bridges and mountain passes, thus, delaying the Alani advance.

>Pontics lose 500 pontic swordsmen and 500 pontic peltasts
>Pontics retreat back to colchis
>Alani lost 500 Alani lancers
>Alani army speed reduced (-10 next roll).

Meanwhile, the gothi, taking advantage of their newly found naval superiority, decided to launch a series of devastating raids over to the pontic shoreline, destroying many port cities, and capturing countless loot.

>Gothi capture 30◘ in loot from the Pontics
>Pontics ability to build ships is now reduced.

Being invaded on two fronts, Alexios the blessed of Pontus, decided to change strategy, and appointed another commander as his main general. This general gave the order to gather all remaining pontic ships and soldiers into two great groups to launch a great counteroffensive push to the dual alliance.

Due to the pontic terrain being hilly and rugged, as the empire itself having a large but thin shape, separating it into two halfs with a wedge attack was exactly what Abaddon had in mind when he ordered his men to rush from the coast to the galatian border, killing and defeatimg everything in their path.

The end result was good for Abaddon and his men as they were able to divide the pontic empire in two, and splitting thier remaining forces in half. Albeit not without some loses.

>Pontic army becomes split in half
>Pontics lose 1000 pontic pikemen.
> Gothi become spread thin
>Gothi lose 500 Gothic knights

Meanwhile, Alkas and the Alani, decided to continue on their march north towards colchis, using their superior numbers to their advantage.
When they arrived a Colchis, they found the city fortified to the teeth by their garrison and forces of the second pontic army.

The solution that Alkas came to deal with the city was simple. Threaten it's inhabitants with death and slaughter unless they surrendered and delivered to us their garrison as prisoners, and in return, the Alani will promise not to harm the civilians, and would grant them tax free status.

With such terrifying yet actractive terms, the civilians of Colchis decided to agree to Alkas's terms, and so, they surrendered to him, and gave him the pontic garrison.

>Colchis surrenders peacefully.
>Alani obtain 5000 war prisoners.

Having now divided the Pontic army in two, Abaddon led an attack agains't the relatively unprepared and smaller second pontic army, rushing in with his knights and crushing everyone with his spearmen.

Eventually though, despite enduring countless punishment from part of the Gothi, while not being able mount an effective defense, or coordinate with the first pontic army, the pontic commander was determined to fight to the death in the name of Pontus.

>Pontics lose 1000 Pontic swordsmen, 1000 pontic pikemen and 1000 pontic peltasts.

However, along the way, they suffered many loses due to the attrition, as well as local hostile forces, alkas tried to repeat his same strategy as with Colchis by offering mercy, only to obtain mixed results as some towns choose to fight instead.

Dealing with both the capital at the west and the second pontic army at the east, Abaddon made the decision to split his force in two mobile bands, with one of them led by a trusty commander ordered to assist the Alani in the west, while Abaddon continued to crush obstinate commander once and for all.

After some relentless fight, and with most of his army dead, the Pontic commander eventually fell dead on the field by the hands of abaddon himself. With his replacement reluctanly deciding to surrender the remaining forces to Abaddon in exchange of mercy

>Pontics lose 2000 royal pontic cavalry and 2000 Peltasts.

Nearing the capital, Alkas in a fit of excitement and confidence, made the order for his cavalry to take on Trapezun and kill everyone there. Unfortunately for him however, the capital's defenders managed to mount an effective defense that stopped their advance short.

This could have been the end of Alkas himself as he fell from his horse during the exchange, but luckily for him, the goths soon arrived at the scene as their reinforcements, thanks to which, Alkas managed to avoid an disaster, upon which, he decided to surround the capital instead.

>Trapezun encircled

Since, Abaddon and Alkas knew that they were going to have a lenghty and tedious siege, they decided that at the very least, they would have some fun doing so, and so, while the Pontic goverment ordered strict rationing and martial law over the city. The dual alliance's forces, decided to just havy a party and drinks lots of booze, stolen of course, to mood up the spirit and morale of their soldiers.

>Alani morale goes up
>Gothi morale goes up

Upon seeing the party outside, many hungry pontic defenders tried to desert the city to join up with our forces, only to be court martialed by the goverment. Which gave Alkas a good idea.

What he did couldn't be considered nothing but bizarre yet creative, as he gave each of the sieging soldiers war trumpets and horns, and ordered them to play them as loudly as possible during the night.

Surely enough, the sheer noice of such event, prevented many Trapezun soldiers and civilians from having a good sleep, which demoralized them even further.

With such potential disaster at their hands, the two brothers decided to reorganize their forces, to clear this mess out. With Abaddon focusing on repeling the Pontic garrison back into the city and Alkas focusing on setting up the preparations for the siege, and build siege weapons.

Abaddon's part was definitely so far the most difficult of the two, and while he was able to push the Pontics back into the city, at least for now, he had suffered many casualties in the process, not to mention that he got seriously wounded in the effort, meaning that won't be able to command the goths for the remainder of the siege.

>Pontics get pushed back into the city
>Pontics lose 1000 royal pontic cavalry
>Abaddon gets injured (-20 to the next Gothi roll)
>Gothi lose 2000 gothic pikemen and 1000 gothic bands

Meanwhile, Alkas for his part was more sucessfull at reorganizing the army and preparing for the siege, even managing to build some quick battering rams for the army. With the only bad thing happening being that the Pontics in their retreat, had captured much of the loot the Gothi-Alani forces had spent the last months gathering.

>3 Rudimentary Battering rams built

Alexios the blessed, their emperor, who once dreamed that he would be the one to bring the light of civilization to the dark sea, not wishing to see more faithful die, decided to reluctantly accept his offer, With the condition that Alkas and Abbadon allowed the freedom movement to priests of sol to preach through their territories, and too guarantee the rights of the pontic citizens in their newly adquired territories.

Alani

Meanwhile, the Alkas decided to review his military, more specifically, his cataphracts and horse archers, who despite being some of his best troops, he knew that they could be improved, and so he did, using the army technology found in his new pontic territories to make them better.

>Alani horse archers (Horse Archer) (atk 7/def 3/Discipline 6/ Tactics 7/ speed 10/ equip 5) becomes Alani heavy horse archers (Horse Archer) (atk 8/def 6/Discipline 7/ Tactics 8/ speed 9/ equip 7), Upkeep increases

However, while his troop review worked absolutely great, his diplomatic ventures didn't go anywhere as the Byzaians rejected making any concesions or negotiations with the Dual alliance, as Constance the restorator had ambitions on making the dark sea his.

YEAR 1061

With the truce with the Skithians finished, and the Byzaians making their way into the remains of the Trakian kingdom, it looks like there's a cold war of sorts between the empire and the dual alliance for control of the dark sea. Something that will have to be taking care of whether by the way of war or intrigue.

Using the pontic tech that the dual alliance captured during the war, Abaddon decided to take advantage of it, by first ordering the upgrade of all of his current Knights and Spear soldiers using better armor and training techniques, and second, ordering the further expansion of the fighing sector alongsise introduction of new tools and techniques.

>Troops requested will arrive next year

In other news, he also decided to continue the integration on the pontic provinces into his realm, by appointing a sycretical "spiritual man" who finds a middle ground between the Dawning Sol pontics, and the Dark moon Alani. While the huge difference between the two religions prevented any significant merging, it appeared that his efforts to introduce some Alani customs into the populance had it's effects.

That said, Since the offer came early during the year, both Abaddon and Alkas had more than enough time to prepare their militaries for the war, as whether be it training more soldiers, or constructing defenses, it's time to make the proper preparations for the conflict

As the war began, Abaddon wanted to make sure that his troops were more than enough to deal with the Skithian threat, and so, he ordered the recruitment of even more warriors into his army, even expending all of his political influence and relations to make sure they arrived.

As Abaddon gathered his men and ships to the war, so too Alkas did the same, by first ordering the construction of many new ships to patrol the dark sea, and fight the Skithians. However, due to the lack of experience of the Alani building ships, they could only make war galleys, which were plentiful and cheap to mantain at least.

That said, his efforts to increase his army were a little more sucessful as the soldiers he requested a year ago, finally arrived to his ranks alongside new recruits. In one hand, they could go on the offensive right away to help their Trakian allies first, and mount a combined front. However, the problem with that, is that they would have to defeat the massive Skithian army in the open field to do see. Making this option a bit risky.

On the other hand, they could go on the defensive, using the Don river as a natural defense, and let the Sithian raiders come to us to be slaughtered, not to mention that they could use the navy to attack them from behind. However, this option would put at risk the Trakians, leaving them very vulnerable against any Skithian attack.

And so, after thinking about it for various hours, Abaddon and Alkas came to the conclusion that since they wouldn't be any more Skithians if they won the war. They would need to win the battle conclusively to see them crumble, and so, they decided to march foward in a full offensive towards the Skithians, to catch them off guard, and link up with the Trakians.

As they marched foward, they encountered many minor villages and forces that they destroyed without problem, just like the previous war.

>Dual alliance obtains 20◘ in loot

However, eventually they came across a rather powerfull 20,000 men strong Skithian Army led by one of their best generals, who was seeking to challenge the dual alliance on the open field.

What should Alkas and Abaddon do ?

And so, without much deliberation, the battle began as the Skithians lauched a calvary charge at the dual alliance, upon which, the Gothi began taking up a defensive position to which counter the Skithian horsemen with their pikemen, which proved to be effective.

>Gothi lose 500 gothi pikemen
>Skithians lose 1000 steppe horsemen and 1000 steppe horse archers.

Following that, Alkas and the Alani began their counterattack by using their own lancer and horse archers to harrass the Skithians and thin their numbers, which they were able to do, albeit, not without loses

>Alani lose 1000 Alani Lancers
>Skithians lose 1000 Noble amazonic archers and 1000 Steppe tribemen.

Seeing that his cavalry charge didn't work, the Skithian commander decided to order his men to begin the encirclement of the dual alliance forces using their superior numbers.

>Skithians lose 1000 steppe horsemen and 500 Steppe lancers
>Alani loses 500 Noble Alani Cataphracts

Meanwhile, looking at the weakened secment that the Alani created over the Skithian line, Abaddon ordered his men to charge through it to break it. Unfortunately for him, however, the Skithians were able to reorganize fast enough to repel the gothi charge.

>Gothi lose 500 Gothi knights

Having now reorganized from the Alani charge, the Skithians began to resume their encirclement of the dual alliance troops.

Attack the steepe horsemen and and steep horse archers with your Noble Cataphracts and Heavy Horse Archers. Show them what warfare has become since last the two sides met. Meanwhile, as this was happening, Alkas tried to, once again, break the Skithian lines with a cavalry charge using his cataphracts, however, the skithian commander rappidly responded by sending his steppe tribesmen to cushion the charge, wasting much of the cataphracts killing power

The battle continued as intense and cruel as ever, as the Alani-Gothi, in their desperation to survive to see another day, did everything that they could to break the encirclement and defeat the Skithians.

One example of it was when Abaddon sent 1000 of his best Pikemen and 1000 of his best spearmen to defend the flanks and slaugher the skithians, only for it to give few results.

>Alani lose 500 steppe horsemen
>Gothi lose 500 spearmen and 500 pikemen

Another example of it, would be when Alkas decided to send his heavy horse archers to harrass the enemy, and attack them from the behind, only for the skithians to counter them with their own horse archers.

>Skithians lose 500 steppe horse archers
>Alani lose 500 heavy horse archers.

And so, it looked like everything was lost for the dual alliance, as they were completely encircled, and their numerous atempt at breaking the encirclement had failed, it really seemed that this was the end for Abaddon and Alkas, yet, it was not.

Why ? you ask, because as the chosen ones of the dark ones, they would not let the brothers fail, because indeed, they would give them their blessing in a form of an expectacular event.

That blessing being the eclipse, when the sun hides, and where the day becomes as dark as the night, a fearfull and unholy event for some, but blessed and sacrosant for others.

(+20 to next roll for both)

And so, as the sun turns dark and red, Abaddon and Alkas know is time to strike.

As the sun became dark, and the eclipse filled the sky, the Skithian troops began to panic, for in their culture, the eclipse symbolized death and bad fortune, and so, the once rigid and disciplined troops slowly began to falter, and with the dark blinding their eyes, they couldn't coordinate as well as before.

But while the Skithian morale suffered due to the eclipse, it had the opposite effect in the dual's alliance forces, for in their faiths and beliefs, that of the Dark sun and the Dark moon, this was nothing but a great blessing from their deities. And so, filled with confidence and lust for blood, they began their counterattack.

What followed, couldn't be considered nothing else but a massacre, a brutal, bloody and barbaric massacre, as the Gothi and Alani troops slaughered through thousands and thousands of Skithian troops, with just their bare fighting spirit, not fancy strategies nor tactics or anything, just their wrath and courage.

Such was the killing spree of the dual alliance army, that by the time the eclipse ended just a few minutes later, the few remaining skithians were already on the run, fleeing as fast as they could from the battlefield.

With the Main skithian army destroyed, the Alani and the Gothi began their march towards Olbia to link up with the Trakians and destroy what remained of the Skithian Khanagate. Raiding and plundering every single village and camp they passed.

>Alani-Gothi Capture 30◘ in loot

Eventually though, after a week or two marching through the sarmatian plains, the dual alliance arrives to the marshlands of Olbia, where khanum Roxolana laid.

Hearing of the disaster at Sarmatia, Roxolana called for her people to join in arms, not just for her, but for the survival of their people as well, for they know that if they lose, only death and subjugation would await for them.

And so, and soon as Abaddon and Alkas arrive near the city of Olbia, they find in front of them a huge 50,000 strong army, composed of almost every single able bodied fighter that the Skithians had, from women, to old men, and even children.

Luckily for them however, they woud not be the only ones fighting this huge force, for the Trakians Under Simon III had also arrived to the battle with 15,000 soldiers. This sure was going to be a bloody one.

Facing such huge, yet, feeble army composed almost entirely of old men, children, and women, both Abaddon and Alkas knew that they weren't going to have the best of morales going on to the fight, and so, they planned two things.

First, the Gothi under Abaddon, ordered their soldiers to look intimidating to the enemy, by having the horsemen gallop around whooping and the infantry shouting jeers at the enemy army. Filled with energy and confidence after their victory in sarmatia, the gothi followed all the orders to the letter, and then some more, scaring the skithians shitless as they threated that they were going to rape, kill, murder and burn everyone and everthing that opposed them, and not necessarily in that order.

>Skithian morale drastically lowered (+40 to next rolled)

Next, Alkas came to intervene in the situation as a mediator, announcing that if everyone in the skithian army surrendered right now and accepted Alani-Gothi authority, none of them would be hurt, or face any serious consequences. And that in adition to that, they would get an 5 year exempt on taxation.

Upon hearing these terms, the Skithian populance, both tempted by the offer, and scared shitless of the consequences, decided to comply, and so, not only did they lower their arms, but they also delivered the head of Roxolana to Abaddon and Alkas's feet, as a sign of loyalty and submission.

>Skithian army surrenders
>Olbia captured.

And so, with their leadership devastated, and their fighting men decimated, the once proud Skithians became nothing more than a subject people of the Trakians and the Alani-Gothi, thus, granting them control over the entire southern shores of the dark sea.

>Anti-Skithian coalition wins the war.

YEAR 1064

With the Skithian Khaganate finally obliterated from the face of earth, and their people subjugated, Abaddon and Alkas now stand as the almost undisputed masters of the dark sea, with only the Byzaian empire to the north posing any real resistance to their ambitions.

That said, now that the war's over, the dual alliance will have to integrate a lot of their new conquests before they can move foward.

Abaddon wants for his eldest 12 year old son Atanaric to take power in case he dies, but due to his bookish and shy personality, he knows that he's probably not going to be the best leading a nation as a warrior-king like he is, and so, he also is considering the option of appointing one of his best generals as his designated succesor.

>B) Designate a capable general

Meanwhile, Alkas too wants for his eldest daughter, the 13 year old Alda, to succeed him in his steps, however, he has his hesitantions due to her violent and malicious personality, the kind that would commit straight assasinations instead of masterful manipulations and plots, and so, he's keeping on the table the option of holding an election for his sucessor.

>1) Designate Alda
>2) Hold an election.

(Well guys, that's all for today, see you tomorrow)
>>

Have Atanaric succeed Alkas and have Alda succeed Abaddon.
>>
>>4377002
>A) Designate Atanaric
>1) Designate Alda

And so, after talking about it for a bit, both Abaddon and Alkas decided that even if they had their flaws, their offsprings should be the ones to continue their legacy, rather than thrusting someone else to do the job.

Either way, with that out of the way, it's time to take care of the yearly affairs of the state.

Gothi

With the sucession matter settled, Abaddon continued his normal work as the head of the principiate, by first continuing his efforts to integrate the skithian provinces into the realm by sending even more gothi settlers there, and also working to rebuild his personal influence and capital by holding a royal court at Krim and rewarding his loyal followers with land and riches.

>Sarmatia and Olbia integration goes from (8/10) to (9/10)
>Influence goes from low to high

Alani

Meanwhile, back in Alania, Alkas finally finished his efforts to integrate the former empire of pontus into his realm, by finally revoking all remaining priviledges and autonomy that the pontics had, and making them nothing more but another people of his high-chiefdom.

YEAR 1067

After a few years of peace, tensions are once again, rising up in the dark sea, as emperor Constance of the Byzaians alongside prince Vlad of the Dachi have been spotted by Gothi spies trying to build a massive army and fleet, to which they will try to "Civilize", the unruly dark sea, and it appears that they aren't alone on this matter, as prince Alexios the younger of pontus and Roxolana's sister Roxane have too garthered the remnants of their nation's forces under them. This surely won't end well for all parties involved.

Gothi

With conflict brewing once again, Abaddon decided to focus this year into strenghtening his army to discourage conflict, and so, with that in mind, he ordered the recruitement of 8000 new pikemen into his army, something that most surely have scared the Byzaians off, as they decided to delay their operations.

>8000 gothi pikemen recruited for a total of 10,000
>The war has been delayed by one year

In adition to that, he also ordered the construction of more Drekkars into his ranks, unfortunately for him, however, due to a sailor shortage going on, he had to scrap his war galleys to provide enough crews for his new ships

>All war galleys scrapped
>5 Drekkars built for a total of 6

Alani

Meanwhile, facing the combined threats of the Byzaians, the Dachi, the Skithians and the pontics, Alkas decided to seek for new allies to which combat them other than the trakians. Unfortunately for him however, the only people that were willing to help, were the Galatians, who asked payment upfront for their mercenary services.

>new country discovered, Galatians: Neutral, (Mercenaries for hire)

Knowing that he and Abaddon will likely have to face this combined threat alone, Alkas also continued to bolster his army by recruiting more soldiers, however, because he had sent most of his nation young men to settle in the pontic shores, they weren't a lot of new recruits available for him at the time.

Gothi

To win the next war, Abaddon knows that he's going to need a lot of men, and so, for that reason, he made a general call for all young Gothi men to join the army to bolster its numbers, being the famous warrior-king that he was, he had no problem attracting plenty of men.

>3000 Gothi spearmen, 3000 Gothi knights, 3000 Gothi Bands, and 3000 Gothi pikemen recruited.

That said, even with all these men, Abaddon knew that he and Alkas were going to be outnumbered in almost every battle, and so, for that reason, he decided to use his giant treasury to hire 100◘ worth of Galatian mercenaries for a 6 year contract. That said, while the men fulfilled their word and arrived to his ranks in mass, their....style of fighting was rather particular....for even he and the other gothi who were just a blood hungry as he, couldn't even comprehend their way of thinking.

>2000 Galatian horse raiders (Horse archer) (atk 7/def 3/Discipline 3/ Tactics 7/ speed 9/ equip 6) hired

Alani

Meanwhile, Alkas decided to expand his navy in order to defend agains't the byzaian navy, the problem was, that even with all the pontic technology that they had captured, the Alani people still were largely ignorant of how to build proper ships beyong simple war galley, something that needed to be fixed.

>8 War galleys constructed for a total of 28

In constrast to the absolute mess that was the Alani navy, their Cavalry was one of the best among the peoples of the dark sea, however, that had it's price, as even the simplest of Alani horsemen, needed to train all the way down starting with their childhood in order to reach expected results, making loses harder to replace, and new recruits harder to come.

>1000 Alani Heavy horse archers and 1000 Alani lancers recruited.

Another year comes and goes without conflict errupting between the two hegemons of the dark sea even with all the high tensions, however, it looks like this will be last year to be that way, as reports come to Abaddon and Alkas ears that the Byzaian empire has finished their military preparations and that next year surely, war will begin, meaning that they should use this last year to complete all their preparations.

Gothi

In order to asure that the dual alliance is going to have all the men they need in the war, Abaddon decided to conscript some of the Pontic war prisoners he capture back during the pontic war into his army.
Of course, some of them refused to serve, but most did, even if it was to just gain their freedom, that said, as Abaddon didn't trust them enough to give them valuable weapons and armors, he merely made them mere slingers to serve as auxiliaries.

>3000 Gothic Slingers (Slingers) (atk 4/def 4/Discipline 3/ Tactics 5/ speed 5/ equip 4) recruited

In adition to that, he also decided to order the construction of more ships to his navy when a new idea hit his head. If the gothi could create the strong Drekkars, could they also create a new tipe of ship, stronger and more powerfull than anything the dark sea had seen ?.

The answer was yes, for after a few months tinkering and experimenting with new designs, eventually the Gothic Sailors unveiled their newest creation upon Abaddon's proud eyes, the powerfull Holk, a new heavy ship to dominate the seas.

Facing a shortage of young men to fill the ranks of his army, Alkas decided to do the same as Abaddon and so, ordered the conscription of his pontic prisoners of war into his army. However, just like with Abaddon, many of them prefered death than serving their sworn enemy, and so, only around 1000 bothered to accept Alkas's deal, that said, as he didnt' trust them enough to serve him, he decided to just enlist them as regular horsemen, and put them away from any position of relevance within the army.

>1000 Alani horsemen (L.cav) (atk 5/def 6/Discipline 6/ Tactics 6/ speed 9/ equip 5) recruited.

Moving on from land to sea, Alkas, once again, tried to improve his navy no matter what, and so, to that end, he ordered his men to analize the rests of Pontic ships to the most minute of details in order to emulate them.

The end result wasn't the best of replicas by any means, but it was functional, which was the important part, and so, after
years and years trying to build his navy, Alkas finally managed something decent, at least.

YEAR 1070

And so, after five years prepparing for it, the Great war of the dark sea begins as Emperor Constance of the Byzaians sends the dual alliance and the trakians a declaration of war together with the Dachians, and begins to send his men alongside the Pontic and Skithian remnants to the north and south, as well as sending his navy to patrol the seas.

Such event of great magnitude requires for an extraordinary plan to counter them, and so, to that end, Alkas and Abaddon, alongside most of their high command as well a representative from king Simon of the trakians, gathered inside Krim castle to discuss war plans, and what should be the first priority.

Abaddon believes that attacking the Byzaian capital through the pontic shores in the north would be the fastest way to counterattack them, as surely they would have to divert most of their forces to defend their own seat of power. That said, Byzantion is infamous for its impenetrable walls and defenses, meaning that winning the siege would be practically impossible.

Simon's representative, belives that the alliance should focus first on getting rid of the Dachians in the south east first, and play defensively in the north. A valid strategy, but one that won't affect the Byzaians directly, meaning that their navy will still have free reign over the seas.

Finally, Alkas believes that the alliance should get rid of the Byzaian navy first before atempting either strategy, and try to some buy time by giving up some ground to overstretch their forces. A fancy strategy, but one that would leave them vulnerable in the menwhile.

What should be their strategy be ?

A) take the battle to them

And so, after debating the matter for a while, the Dual alliance plus the trakians, decided to follow Abaddon's plan to take the fight to them and siege their capital.

It wasn't the most safe of plans or anything, but if Abaddon and Alkas wanted to win the war, they knew that they had to play agressively and take the fight to the Byzaians doors.

With that said, Alkas gathered 12,000 of his men and marched to the Paphlagonian borderlands, alongside Abaddon's 16,000 troops, and his 8000 Galatian Mercenaries, for the total of a 36,000 strong combined army.

Before they could even atempt to siege Byzantion however, the Dual alliance's forces would have to first defeat prince Alexios the younger, who is currently the governor of Paphlagonia, and boasts around 10,000 men from the Pontic remnants.

Though his force is small compared to the dual alliance, he is no fool, for he knows that defeating them in a open battle would be impossible, and so, to defeat them instead, he has spent most of the last few years fortifying his province, as well as constructing numerous defenses and traps around the province, such as fake roads that lead to dead ends complete with ambushes, military garrisons disguised as simple villages and many other dirty tricks to delay the dual alliance.

Taking care of Alexios the younger will surely prove to be even more troublesome that is father was, but Abaddon and Alkas know that they will find a way or another to deal with him.

And so, as they ventured deeper into Paphlagonia, Abaddon decided to use his mercenaries to be the head of the main force in order for them to absorb the brunt of the dirty tricks and scare the shit out of the Paphlagonians with their speed and bloodlust.
The plan worked somewhat, as while they were able to clear the path clear to Nikea, they had to take some serious loses clearing out traps, something that they didn't like to do.

>Dual alliance arrives closer to Nikea
>Dual alliance loses 500 Naked swords and 500 Galatian slingers
>Galatian mercenaries loses 1 loyalty, (Current 4, if it reaches 0 they revolt)

In adition to that, as they continued their march through enemy territory, Alkas decided to play it safe, and used part of his cavalry to scout ahead and find the best way to proceed.
What they found was anything but hopeful for the dual alliance, as it appears that in order to proceed to Byzantion, they would have to first take the fortified city of Nikea, where prince Alexios the younger, alongside many Byzaian reinforcements.

>Duall alliance loses 500 Alani horsemen

As the dual alliance's forces begin their siege of the city, they begin to realize that they are two inmediate problems that would complicate their effort. 1,- that after travelling through the mountains of Paphlagonia, they are beggining to run low on supplies for the army, and 2.- that the city of Nikea will be difficult to starve to submission due to the many villages and farms that surround it.

To solve both of these problems at once, Abaddon orders his Galatian mercenaries to surround the city and loot, kill and burn everything around it, and that they will get to keep half of everything that they collect.

Surely enough, driven by their lust of battle and gold, the Galatian mercenaries begin to raid the surrounding countryside of Nikea, pludering and sacking many villages, forcing many villagers to flee the farms, and securing plenty of supplies to the dual alliance, boosting morale of everyone.

>4 months of supplies secured
>Galatian mercenaries loyalty goes from 4 to 5
>Ability of Nikea to secure food reduced (+10 to rolls to starve the city)
>-5◘ for payment to the mercenaries.

Meanwhile, Alkas ordered his men to construct some siege equipment such as ladders and other makeshift tools to attack Nikea. However, as always, the Alani aren't the best enginers in the world, an as such, they are only able to build a scant few poorly constructed ladders for the army. Not the best kind when assaulting the walls.

>3 poorly constructed ladders built (-10 to rolls to scale the walls)

With the preparations of the siege made, the dual alliance will now have to make a choice, to either do the quick thing and assault the city in a siege, or do the long thing and wait for them to starve to death.

With the preparations ready, Abaddon and Alkas made the order to their troops to begin the assault of the city, with the Gothi focusing on capturing the western gate, and the Alani focusing on assisting in the assault by scaling the walls with their poor quality ladders.

Abaddon's strategy capture the gate was simple, use bare numbers to force it open to allow his troops there, since he knew that wasting time or lives getting bogged down here would only delay their advance to the capital and sap their strenght, he ordered once again for his galatian mercenaries to take the brunt of the enemy arrows as they advance, something that they didn't like that much, but couldn't complain about as the strategy worked, as the western gate crumbled down under the mass of soldiers.

>Western gate captured
>500 Galatian slingers lost
>Galatian mercenaries loyalty goes from 5 to 4

Meanwhile, Alkas strategy of scaling the walls with the ladders failed, as one of his ladders collapse from all the weight of the soldiers climbing it, killing down all those poor soldier both in top and in the bottom of the ladder, so he had to cancel the operation.

>Alani lose 500 Alani swordsmen.

Despite the failure of the ladder operation, the dual alliance had now captured the western gate of Nikea, allowing them the opportunity to take the city by force, and to kill prince Alexios the younger once and for all.

As Nikea surrenders to the dual alliance alongside the head of their prince in exchange for mercy, the forces of Abaddon and Alkas now find themselves one step closer to byzantion, however, before they could even begin the siege of the city, they would have to first conquer Nikomedia, a bustling port city, and the key port of the Byzaian navy in the dark sea. Allowing them to call reinforcements from the mainland whatever they want.

To deal with such problem, Abaddon ordered a small contigent of boats to scout along the coast in search of any Byzaian fleet that may carry reinforcements to Nikea. While they did manage to locate a fleet, unfortunately for them, that fleet was to strong and numerous for them to take on directly, and so, they had to retreat after losing a couple of ships in the skirmirsh.

>Gothi lose 2 cogs

Meanwhile, back in land, Alkas led the joint march of the dual alliance from Paphlagonia into the province of Bycinia. Similar to what Abaddon did during the march through Paphalgonia, he put the Galatian mercenaries at the front of the army to lead the charge and harass, despoil and plunder the countryside to secure food and supplies.

>3 Months of Supplies secured.

Unfortunately for Alkas and the army however, during one of the Galatian raids, they encountered none other than a medium sized 15,000 men strong Byzaian army, ready put an ending to their little invasion.

With Abaddon's first atempt at dealing with the Byzaian navy a failure, he decided to try it again sending a huge contigent of ships towards Nikomedia in order to block their ports. Along they way though, they encountered a small Byzaian transport squad, carrying 2000 soldiers from the mainland to Nikomedia in order to reinforce their army.
Abaddon, of course, gave the order for his mighty Holks to crush this puny fleet, unfortunately for Abaddon however, the byzaian galleys proved to be rather tough to beat, even with his bigger ships, and though he was able to destroy them at the end, all of his hulks suffered some minor damages doing so.

>Byzaians lose 2000 soldiers and 4 galleys
>Gothi Holks recieve minor damage (1/3)

Moving on from land to sea, as Alkas and the dual alliance forces faced this rather tough Byzaian contigent, he got a clever idea to beat them.

First, he sent his pontic soldiers as meatshields for the enemy to hit, while at the same time he used the fearsome Galatian Mercenaries as the vanguard for his operation.

Next, he sent his cavalry to make an encirclement of the enemy army, using their superior speed and manouver to prevent them from escaping. Once he had them surrounded, he proceeded to eliminate the strong but substantially weak Byzaian Firethrowers and Skythions.

Gothi

With the small transport fleet defeated, Abaddon felt confident enough to atempt the creation of a blockade in Nicomedia in order to facilitate things back on land for Alkas.

Unfortunately for him however, as soon as his fleet arrived near Nicomedia, they encountered none other than the main Byzaian fleet docked there, 20 strong ships in total.

Looking at the situation, Abaddon realized that he had a very risky opportunity right there in his hands, either he could focus on destroying the main Byzaian fleet right now but at a great cost and achieve the blockade he wanted, or he could continue to pick them off in small groups, a safer option even if that meant not realizing the blockade.

Alani

Meanwhile, back with Alkas, he continued his efforts to destroy this section of the byzaian army by by tightening the encirclement of their troops with the the Noble Alani Cataphracts and Noble Gothic Knights to pick of the cavalry and infantry, which were able to do, albeit with some loses.

>Byzaians lose 1000 Prononia Infantry and 1000 Kataphractoi

With such a golden opportunity at his hands, Abaddon couldn't help but cave in to his ambitions of crushing the main Byzaian navy once and for all.

And so he did, giving the order to all of his ships to rush in at top speed and sink as many Byzaian ships in the harbor as humanly fast as possible.

The exchange that ensued was nothing but short of total chaos and mayhem, as the Gothi fleet attacked and attacked the Byzaians without mercy in a unorganized rush, while the Byzaians desperately rushed in to man their ships and repel the attack. Failing to do so, but not without giving a good fight to the Gothi.

At the end of the day, though, the Gothi were able to sink or capture almost all of the ships in the port of Nikomedia, dealing a massive blow to the Byzaian war effort, and allowing them to blockade Nikomedia. Of course, this wasn't without sacrifices either as all of the Gothi ships suffered enourmous damages fighting.

Meanwhile, moving on with Alkas, seeking to defeat the enemy once and for all, Alkas gave the order to his troops to realize a pincer attack upon th enemy troops, having the mercenaries and pontic forces force them in a vulnerable centre.

The plan worked as it was intented as after a series of manouvers and prolonger fighting, the Byzaian army lost half of their remaining troops, forcing the remaining half to surrender to the victorious Alkas as war prisoners. Of course, to achieve this, he had to sacrifice plenty of Pontic and Galatian fodder, but it ended up being totally worth it.

>Byzaian army D surrenders to the Dual alliance
>Dual alliance obtains 5000 war prisoners

>Dual alliance loses 1500 Gothi Slingers and 500 Galatian raiders
>Galatian mercenaries loyalty goes from 4 to 3

With both of the Byzaians main forces in Asiana completely defeated by the Dual alliance, it was now time for Alkas and Abaddon to siege Nikomedia, the last city standing between them and the grand prize that was Byzantion itself.

With the blockade set up, and with control of the waters of Nicomedia secured, Abaddon proceded to exercise his control over the flow of goods in and out of the port, both to deny the Nikomedian garrison of supplies as well as to enrich himself.

Unfortunately for him however, the Byzaian empire and it's merchants weren't that stupid as to fall for his schemes, and neither was the Nikomedian garrison, who has a secret ace up their sleves, a secret network of underground mountain passes to move supplies and troops in and out of Nikomedia, meaning that all they had to do was to stop trade by sea and focus on the land.

>Blockade effects upon Nikomedia cancelled.

As if that wasn't bad enough for Abaddon, when he tried to order his men to repair all of his ships, they informed him that repairing them while blockading the city would be impossible, both for a lack of material, and because to repair many damages they would have to replace various big parts of the ships, meaning that doing that at sea would leave them completely exposed and vulnerable.

>You can't repair ships while doing the blockade.

In other news, while Abaddon was dealing with the blockade of Nikomedia, Alkas and his troops began to prepare for the siege of Nikomedia, by first building some makeshift battering rams and ladders for the job...

>3 battering rams and 3 ladders built. (+15 to assault)

...And also by parading the pontic and Byzaian war prisoners around the city to display how merciful he was to them, and how the Nikomedians should totally surrender peacefully to him, though, perhaps he shouldn't have chosen the badly beaten ones for the job, as it appears that the Nikomedians did not buy it.

>Nikomedia morale remains the same.

Either way, with his atempt at demoralizing the enemy failing, he tried to move on to starve them to death by controling the resources around the city, only to be informed by one of his men that the Nikomedians had not only already collected the year's harvest, but they also had a secret underground network to bring in more supplies.

Realizing that not only he and his fleet were in a vulnerable position, should the Byzaians lauch another fleet against them, but that also his men were starting to get bored doing nothing but mantaining the blockade, Abaddon decided to solve both problems at once by send a messenger to Alkas.

That message contained the following
1.-Since you're using my troops in my absence, send me your ships.
And 2.-When you send, be sure to pack them full of the most beautiful Women from your land.

Surely enough, Alkas decided to accept Abaddon's request, and so, he sent him 20 of his war galleys alongside the best concubines and mistresses gold could buy. To say that Abaddon and his men were happy the day they arrived would be an understatemen.

>Dual alliance navy morale up (+15 to next roll)

While Abaddon and his men enjoyed life at sea, Alkas tried to think of a way to crack down Nikomedia's defenses, and facilitate things for the assault, in order to make it less risky.

It was then however, that one of his men spoke about the Byzaian firethrower technology they captured from the soldiers earlier.

Alkas didn't knew much about the how could a man launch explosive fire from his hands, but he decided to give it a try nevertheless, and so, he ordered his men to see if they could use those devices from the advantage.

Of course, as none of the Alani nor Gothi had ever seen a thing like it in their lives, they didn't knew how to use it, and so, they tried to use them as clubs, only to end up exploding in a ball of fire.

Not wanting to let their poor lives end up wasted for nothing, Alkas gave the order to simply throw the damn devices to the walls of the city to see if they could destroy them.

The result of that explosion was satisfactory for Alkas and co, for while the explosion didn't destroy the walls as they wanted, it did however, create a medium sized breach on it's northern face, giving them the opportunity to launch their assault.

With a breach on the wall opened by the explosion, Alkas knew that he had to act fast to pounce at this opportunity lest the enemy have time to reorganize and mount a defense.

And so, for that end, he inmediately ordered his pontic auxiliaries and Galatian mercenaries, to go through the breach to begin the assault of the city.

As the horde of almost naked men entered running and
screaming into the city, Alkas also ordered his archers to protect the insurgent force and to pick of the defenders one by one taking advantage of their lack of organization, in adition to that, he also ordered his cavalry force to come in and sweep in as the infantry entered deeper into the city.

At first everything well excellently well according to plan, as the surprised enemy struggled to make an organized defense of the city, and fell dead upon the galatian hordes, who unfortunately for Alkas, also began to loot and burn everything in their path, accidentaly burning some pontics in the process.

That said, eventually though, the city fell completely to Alkas and co, as the main city squared was captured and all defenders were rounded up and massacred for all to see, making that bit of unnecessary looting and burning totally worth it.

That said, after months of traveling and fighting through the pontic coast, time has passed, and now as the snow sets in, it is now winter, meaning that the siege of Byzantion will have to wait a couple of months.

In the meanwhile however, Alkas and Abaddon must now play defensively, as rumour spreads of two large 15,000 men strong each Byzaian armies approaching the city, meaning that they should prepare defenses.

As the Byzaians marched their armies fowards to Nikomedia, Abaddon knew that for as bad as dealing with the land invasion was, if the byzaians were allowed to also launch a sea incursion upon Nikomedia, it would practically make the city impossible to defend, and so, he decided to rush back into his ships, with the objetive of blocking any sea incursions.

While he was able to put his ships back to work and repair some minor damage to the Holks, the good news wouldn't last for long, as he and his men came in contact not soon after sailing, with 2 minor 8 ships strong byzaian fleets.

Looks like he will have to come up with a way of dealing with them, lest their superior manouver out flank him.

>Holks damage goes from (2/4) to (1/4)

Meanwhile, back with Alkas, he decided to order his men to repair the defenses of the city as well as to gather any information that they could about the byzaian war effort with the locals.

Unfortunately for him, however, one of his Galatian mercenaries, accidentaly caused a major riot within the city after he tried to coerce harshly many young women, causing the denizens of Nikomedia to rise up in revolt against their Gothic and Alani occupiers.

>9,000 Peasants (atk 3/ def 2/ Discipline 2/ Tactics 3/ Speed 6/ equip 2) rise up in revolt in Nikomedia.

Looks like both Abaddon and Alkas will have to deal with both the revolt and the secundary Byzaian fleets before they can even mount a defense against the Byzaian armies.

With the two byzaian fleets rapidly approaching his own, Abaddon knew that he had little time to react before they surrounded him, and so, with that in mind, he immediately ordered his men to attack one of the byzaian fleets using their superior number of ships to their advantage.

Surely enough, this bold and risky manouver actually managed to work, as the Alani wargalleys and gothi cogs swarmed without mercy the left fleet, sinking and capturing all of their ships, but losing plenty of their own.

>Left Byzaian fleet destroyed.
>Gothi lose 2 galleys and cogs.

As this was happening on the sea, Alkas decided make use of the art of diplomacy to deal with the peasant uprising, promising plenty of bribes, tax exemptions and fair justice if they accepted him as their new lord, with him personally executing the Galatian mercenary that caused all this trouble to begin with.

As was expected of Alkas's silver tongue, his negotiations with the Nikomedian denizens were more than a complete sucess, as they did not only accept all of his terms and agreed to cease their uprising, but also many of them decided to join the dual alliance's forces as auxiliaries. Making this sucess go even beyond Alkas high expectations.

With the left Byzaian fleet destroyed, Abaddon was confident that he would be able to easily hold on and defend himself agains't the right Byzaian fleet for control of the sea, which soon proved to be in the wrong, as among the remaining Byzaian ships, there were a couple of the infamous fire ships, which set ablaze two of his best ships when he wasn't looking.

>Gothi lose 1 holk and 1 Drekkar.

While Abaddon struggled to deal with this new threat, back on land, Alkas gave the order for his troops to make a complete preparation for the upcoming battle, Having the
mercanaries, pontic forces and newly integrated Nikomedian forces form the vanguard to meet the coming Byzaian armies. While the archers stayed behind the defended lines to launch their arrows, with the cavalry riding with the auxilliary forces and the infantrymen to bring out the rear and make the attack.

Surely enough, this master strategy worked perfectly as intended, as by the time the two Byzaian armies arrived in the open field outside Nikomedia to battle, they were instantly overwhelmed by the sheer number of arrows, slings and troops coming to them, losing over 6000 of their men in just the oppening stage while only dealing minimal damage to the dual alliance forces.

>Byzaians lose 2000 Skithions, 2000 Pronoia Infantry and 2000 Byzaian Guard archers.
>Dual alliance loses 500 Gothic slingers and 500 Alani horsemen.

That said even with over a quarter of their forces lost, the Byzaians didn't decide to retreat, and instead, decided to prepare their firethrowers to rain fire upon the Gothi and Alani troops, with plenty of Varangion guards to protect them from assault. Meaning that both Alkas and Abaddon will have to deal with their enemie's destructive fire capabilities.

Having now experienced the power of the fire ships at first hand, Abaddon realized that he couldn't just not stay on the defensive and be covered in fire by the Byzaians, no, he had to go on the offensive, and fast.

And so, to that end, he ordered the Alani war galleys to make it and run attacks on the fire ships, surrounding them, and going in circles, with the hope that through superior manouver they would be able to make the fire ships fire upon their own allies.

And indeed they were able to, for after sailing in circles around the damn ships, they managed to trick it into launching fire at their own vessels, burning half of the remaining byzaian fleet to death, but not without losing many War galleys of their own.

>Byzaians lose 4 dromons.
>Gothi lose 6 War galleys.

Meanwhile, back with Alkas, knowing the kind of destruction those fire throwers could make, he immediately ordered his men to grab the remaining captured byzaian fire throwers and throw them upon the byzaians.

The following exchange couldn't be described as anything other than a complete chaotic massacred, as the byzaian fire thrower and their varagion guards perished under the flames, but not without returning the favor and killing many Alani cataphracts and Gothi knights with their own fire.

>Byzaians lose 3000 fire throwers and 3000 Varangion guards
>Dual alliance loses 1000 Alani cataphracts and 1500 Noble Gothi knights.

Even with heavy loses in both sides, the fight continues in both land and sea as despite losing half of their men and ships, the Byzaians continue to fight on, this time employing a new strategy called "kill as many Alani and Gothi as possible without dying", with the clear intention of weaking their forces before they can begin the siege of Byzantion.

With most of the Byzaian navy gone now, Abaddon focused his attention into dealing with the rest of the remaining Byzaian ships, using his cogs and drakkars to deal with the fire ships and the war galleys with the other ships.

After an intense struggle and chaotic exchange, the Gothi fleet under Abaddon laid victorious over the seas, as the last of the Byzaian ships either sunk into the ship or where captured by the Gothi. It had cost them some ships to do so, but at the end of the day it was all worth it in the name of victory.

>Byzaian fleet destroyed or captured.
>Gothi lose 1 cog, 2 galleys and 1 drekkar.

At the same time this was happening though, things weren't going too good for Alkas and his men compared to Abaddon's victory ,as one of his plans backfired upon him in a way he should have seen.

His plan in question was the following, "Name a prize for the the man, of any rank, who kills 10 Byzaian units, and for every 10 men killed after that. The men will fight for their reward. Then in formation attack". Sounds easy right ?

Well no. for immediately after he proposed the prize, the Galatian mercenaries in their thirst for gold and battle, broke ranks completely, upon which, many of the less organized and disciplined forces followed suit, turning the once intricate battle formation he had spent weeks drilling into a total chaotic one on one fight between the dual alliance and the Byzaian forces, with zero strategy or fancy tactics involved.

In such event, the Byzaian forces, though taken by surprise initially by their charge, quickly began to turn the tables in their favour as they used their superior discipline to pick off the disparate dual alliance's forces. Needless to say, it didn't well for Alkas.

With the situation deteriorating by the second, Alkas decided that enough was enough, and so, he went to bring order to the host, by ordering them to attack relentlessly at the enemy but using order and strategy, with grave punishments for anyone who dared disobey him. Hearing the potential punishments, the core troops of the dual alliance decided to reorganize and fight as he told them to, with most of the auxilaries following suit.

With the core of the army put back in line, Alkas turned his attention towards the Galatian Mercenaries, who were still causing chaos through both ranks of the battle. In this case, rather than try to force them back into line, Alkas figured out that their ability to cause chaos and mayhem among the enemy could be used for his advantage. And so, he deciced to deploy and reorientate them to cause chaos wherever it was needed, far away from the regular soldiers.

And so, after dealing with the undiscipline within the army, Alkas manage to put them back to work killing the Byzaian troops with a good formation and tactics. Some various soldiers had to die while the reorganization took place, but it was worth it.

>Byzaians lose 1500 Prononia Infantry and 1000 Byzaian guard archers and 500 Skithions
>Dual alliance loses 500 gothi Spears and 500 Alani swordsmen.

That said, the battle continues on, and with only a fourth of their army remaining, it looks like the Byzaians are going for an desperate all out attack to kill as many Dual alliance men as possible to weaken them before the march to Byzantion. Something that Alkas will have to deal with.

Unfortunately for Alkas however, the Byzain troops charged fowards with such fast speed and agility that every single arrow and stone thrown missed them, leaving them perfectly capable to face the Gothi troops that Alkas had sent against them, taking them down without breaking a sweat.

YEAR 1071--Mid Summer

After a few weeks marching through the rough but fertile plains and hills of Bythinia, the Dual alliance finally arrives near Byzantion, and as soon as they arrive, they begin to see the greatest and biggest city they had ever seen in their lives, as well as the most well defended that they had encounted.

In adition to boasting a huge 20,000 garrison representing the best of the best the Byzaian has to offer, the city has not one, nor two, but three different defensive massive stone and iron walls as high as the eye can see, separating the inner sections of the city with the outer sections.

As if the huge walls weren't enough for the city, the city has also a huge grain supply in form of multiple scattered and hidden silos containg alone a year worth of food supplies, not to mention that in case those ever were to run out, the city also has two giant harbors on opposite sides of the straits to bring more supplies and men in, and those are protected by huge sea towers that spill naphta over any would be blockader.

What's worse, is that as If all those defenses weren't already bad enough for Alkas and Abaddon to get over with, the geography and location of the city inside the straits, means that there's only so much room for the dual alliance's troops to manouver and attack, limiting them to just a few faces of the city, and making bottlenecks more likely to happen.

This sure is going to be tough, isn't it ?.

With a long road ahead of them before they can claim their final prize, Abaddon and Alkas decided to begin their preparations for the siege of the eternal citadel, with Alkas focusing on land, and Abaddon on the sea as usual. Beggining with Abaddon, looking at the highly defended ports and harbors of the city, he knew that to take them it would be necessary to do more than just simply show up with some boats. And so, for that reason, he decided to go experimental.

Using some of the newly captured Byzaian firethrowers from the last battle, he wanted to see if they could be equiped in a boat to form a fire ships, similar to those the byzaians used, but unfortunately for him however, his atempt at replicating them failed as all of the galleys he put them on exploded upon the most minimal movement. That said, not all was lost for him, as he realized he could do something useful with it.

>Dual alliance loses 4 galleys
>Dual alliance can now transform regular ships into demolition ships.

Meanwhile, as Abaddon was doing some experiments in the water, Alkas ordered his men to secure the fertile hills and plains surrounding the city for food and supplies, and to extract intel about the city and the fire thrower thingies from the peasants.

While they were able to secure and forage plenty of food for many months for the army, they weren't so lucky regarding their search for knowlegde about the fire throwers, for the knowledge about their creation, usage and maintenance was a top secret in the byzaian army, only reserved to the most skilled and experienced soldiers and engineers.

That said, after having a "Friendly chat" with one of the peasants, with definitely no violence involved, he spilled the beans about something interesting, that the easternmost section of the outermost wall laid upon less than firm ground than the other sections of the wall, due to the rain water flowing down the hills and into that slight depression. Something very interesting indeed.

Having come to a brilliant discovery that will surely change the future of naval warfare forever, Abaddon ordered his men to prepare various "demolition ships" by using the captured byazian firethrowers and attaching them to the Alani war galleys.

A pair of Galleys accidentally blew up during the process, but other than that, Abaddon had now created 4 new demolition ships, ready to blow up any port and harbor defenses of the city

>Dual alliance loses 2 War galleys
>4 Small demolition ships constructed.

While Abaddon continued his new experiments on shipbuilding, Alkas continued on with his preparations of the siege of the outermost wall, by building some basic battering rams, boosting morale among his men with a feast, and continuing to gather intel and resources around the city.

In particular, while they weren't able to forage any more food than the one they collected last month, they were able to get some more intel by beating up some random peasants and forcing them to speak.

This poor peasant told Alkas and his men about that there was a guard in the westernmost section of the outermost wall that was infamous for his corruption and backstabbing, and that he only got the post because he was the nephew the captain of the guard.

Surely bribing this idiot to open the gate for the dual alliance could be a easy option, but there's no guarantee that he isn't going to commit a double backstab and sell us to the byzaians, knowing his tricky reputation.

Given the size and magnitude of those defensive sea towers in both harbors of the city, Abaddon ordered his men to create more demolition ships, to be sure that he can blow all of them out, which surprisingly, they managed to do without blowing any more ship in the process. And so, having done all preparations, the assault of the outermost began as Abaddon instructed his demolition ships to take out all sea towers in the eastern harbor in order to assist Alkas with his part, which he was able to do albeit with some difficulties with some difficulties, as he had to sacrifice one of his holks as a bait in order to keep the towers preocupied. Either way, the demolition ships were able to their job, and blowed up the sea towers, allowing Abaddon and his fleet to capture the eastern harbor soon thereafter.

>Eastern Sea towers destroyed.
>Eastern Harbor captured.
>8 Demolition ships used.
>Dual alliance loses 1 Holk.

At the same time this was happening on the sea, Alkas prepared an small force of auxiliaries and mercenaries equiped with the explosive tech, and had them go through the western gate with the help of the duplicitious guard, only to encounter an byzaian ambush there when the guard opened the gate, as he revealed his true loyalties.

Luckily for Alkas however, his spies had gotten word of the man dubious tricks before, and so, rather than simply allow his troops to be ambushed by them, he immediately ordered them to throw their explosives at the garrison as well as to any defensive structure within the outer city, upon which he sent the rest of his troops to mop up any remaining resistance they encountered.

The plan worked, as the surprised byzaian garrison, weren't able to evade the explosives in time, and so, many of perished either by the flame or by the sword, with the remaining survivors deciding to regroup and retreat behind the second wall and into the middle city.

>Byzaians lose 2500 Elite Byzaian guard archers and 2500 Elite Varangion guards.
>Dual alliance loses 1000 Naked swords and 500 Gothi bands
>Outermost wall captured
>Outer city captured.

With the outer city captured, Alkas allowed his men to rampage through it, looting and ransacking everything that they came across in their path, and though the outer city was easily the poorest part of the city, they were able to capture quite the loot, not to mention many supplies and food that the byzaians left behind as the wave of refugees flocked into the middle city.

>30◘ in loot captured
>5 months of food and suplies stolen from the byzaians.

Having now completed their first goal of the capture of the city, the reunited Alkas and Abaddon met up to talk about their current situation and the problems that they will have to face in order to assault the second wall and the middle city, such as that they have ran out of explosive material, that the byzaians are building another navy in the northern port, and that the second wall is not only twice as thick and tall as the outer one, but also has a moat in it.

Surely they will have to do some preparations before they can begin their second assault.

1071-Harvest Season

Having secured now their hold over the outer city, Alkas and Abaddon began to make the preparations required for the siege of the middle city, as well as to deal with all of their new problems and obstacles regarding their current situation.

One of these problems was that the byzaians were now building another navy on the northern harbor of the city, something that could complicate things very much for them, should they allow them to continue foward. And so, with that in mind, Abaddon gathered his remaining galleys and sent them to harrass the contruction of their ships, as well as couple to demolition ships to deal with the sea towers.

The plan worked as intented, but only to some extend, as the Alani war galleys could only manage to sink a third of the ships in construction before being burned to death by the sea tower, and due to the lack of demolition ships, he could only destroy a third of them also.

>Dual alliance loses 4 war galleys and 2 demolition ships
>Byzaians lose 4 dromons and 2 sea towers in northern harbor.

Back on land, upon seeing the sheer size and wideness of the moat separating the outer city with the middle city, Alkas couldn't help but order his men to build some bridges, to do some....experiments.

Fast foward a few weeks and several failed bridge atempts later, Alkas came to an worrifing conclusion. That the moat was no mere random defense shoehorned in the middle of the city, like he previously though, but rather, was a very clever mechanism to make use of the difference of elevation between the different rings of the city, by forcing everyone to enter to the middle city by a chockpoint, as due to the moat's high wideness, size and depth, it was impossible for anyone to build a bridge sufficiently strong yet large enough to carry more than a couple of people across the moat.

>Dual alliance loses 500 gothi pikemen and 500 Alani swordsmen.

Look like Alkas will have to either drain the moat completely or flood it with water up the top, so that his army can cross over it. Meanwhile, Abaddon should probably use the eastern harbor of the city to build some new war galleys to continue his assault.

Having now tested the limits and measurements of the moat, Alkas first idea was to find a way to somehow drain the moat so that his troops could cross over it. Luckily for him, the byzaians had installed a draining mechanism into the thing, so it was only a question of finding it and use it.

A few days of searching later, Alkas and his men found what they were looking for as they encountered the cabin with the draining mechanism just hidden in the right edge of the outer city. The problem was, that it's workers and operators had fortified inside the place with heavy barricades and crossbows, and due to the lack of explosive material, the only way for Alkas and his men to take over the mechanism would be with a direct assault, which would be highly expensive.

>Draining mechanism discovered.

Meanwhile, at the same time Alkas was searching for the mechanism, Abaddon had spent his time trying to building more ships for his fleet to assist in the conquest of the city, but unfortunately for him, the byzaians had taken away most building materials of the eastern port into the middle city, leaving him with just enough wood to build a pair of war galleys.

>2 war galleys built

Things are proving to be tough so far, but surely Alkas and Abaddon will find a way foward.

With a couple more galleys built, Abaddon hoped that he would have the sufficient numbers to do another raid on the Byzaian naval building process, using the galleys swift speed and manouver to avoid the fire towers, but unfortunately for him however, they weren't so lucky this time around like the last time, only sinking two small ships, and getting obliterated by the crew of the others.

>Byzaians lose 2 war galleys.
>Dual alliance loses 4 galleys.

Meanwhile, back on land, things weren't going smoothly either, as Alkas accidentaly issued an order of direct assault against the fortified worked while he was trying to break their morale at night with chants and war cries, making his men try to assault a fortified position in a unorganized rush, killing a third of the workers sure, but suffering at least four times the casualties in the atempt before getting beaten back.

>Byzaians lose 500 City guards
>Dual alliance lose 500 Gothi bands, 500 Gothi slingers, 500 Alani swordsmen, and 500 Gothi pikemen.

Things are getting very tough so far, and with half of the harvest season having passed by, the Dual alliance will have to do something to make sure they can capture the middle city before the winter arrives.

With little to no wood to build more ships at the city's harbour, Abaddon knew that his only opportunity to get more ships would be to buy some private vessels from some of the city's residents, as well as to hire some mercenaries, which he managed to do after spending half of the loot gathered during the capture of the outer city on mercenaries, as well as strongarming some "Cooperative" merchants of the city into selling their ships for cheap to him.

>Dual Alliance aquires 6 Dromons and 8 Pirate Galleys. (Galley) (Atk 5/ Def 3/ Speed 9/ Tactics 8/ Discipline 4/ Carrying capacity 500 each)
>20◘ spent.

Having gathered quite the large fleet in just a few moves, Abaddon proceeded to resume his raids upon the construction of the new byzaian fleet by sending small squads to perform hit and run attack to damage as many ships as possible while avoiding the sea towers. While some of the ships did got detroyed by them, they did though, manage to sink all remaining Byzaian ships in the northern harbour, thus, destroying the Byzaian efforts to take back dominance of the sea.

>Northern Byzaian fleet destroyed
>Dual alliance loses 2 Dromons and 2 Pirate Galleys.

Meanwhile, back with Alkas and the question of the moat, after suffering heavy casualties in his accidental attempt at capturing the moat mechanism. He decided to boost his men's morale and rally them up for a direct assault properly coordinated against the moat workers.

Unfortunately for him tough, one of the Galatian mercenary misheard what he saying, and began the charge far earlier than what Alkas had planned, triggering the rest of his men to charge as well against the mint workers in a definitely not properly coordinated assault.

What followed next was anything but a massacre as hundreds and hundreds of brave Alani and Gothi threw themselves upon the moat worker's heavy crossbows, suffering severe casualties of such magnitude, that Alkas may have just decided to pack things up and lift the siege, if it wasn't for the fact that the Byzaians eventually ran out of arrows, allowing the Dual alliance to take control of the moat mechanism to drain it.

>Byzaians lose 1000 City guards
>Dual alliance loses 1000 Gothi bands, 1000 Naked swords and 1000 Alani swordsmen.
>Moat mechanism captured
>Moat drained.

With the moat drained and the northern fleet destroyed, it's a only a matter of destroying the middle walls and capture the northern harbour so that Alkas and Abaddon can claim the middle city for themselves before winter comes.
