+Intro+
In the grim darkness of the 41st millennium there is only war. Imperium of Man, once strong and proud, now is slowly crumbling, whole regions of space are lost to the horrors that lurk in the darkness of the void. Sector Deus is just one of the thousands of Imperial provinces that form the front line in the war to defend Humanity itself. Corruption from within and aggression from without threaten it. But the Emperor sends us hope. High Lords of Terra commissioned a Chapter of Adeptus Astartes, finest warriors Humanity has ever seen, to defend this region of space. They are the last line of defence that hold Age of Ruin at bay. They are the Ghosts of Retribution and this is their tale.

+Matters to be resolved+

=Mergidos Operation=

+The Frigate+
What is your preference for the fate of the downed Chaos frigate? While corrupted, it could still be salvaged, after taking necessary precautions. Once, long ago, it served as the Imperial vessel, maybe it could do so again.
a) We shall lift it into the skies once more, to serve the Chapter and the Imperium [65 W]
b) We shall inform Nestorium of it's location and share the bounty with them [+50 W]
c) We shall take the blessed path and detonate it's reactors, ending the ship's misery forever. [Secret]

However, before the recovery can be done, you need to decide the fate of the corrupted captain, who is flesh-merged with the bridge...
a) He might have been a good man once, end his misery quickly [Apothecaries will apply a concentrated poison that will put him to sleep and he will never wake up]
b) He should suffer for his sins [Let the servitors cut him out, while keeping him alive, then throw him off the nearest cliff]
c) BURN IT!!! [Apply blessed promethium in inordinate amounts]

+Tau Prisoners+

You now have about 34 Tau prisoners:
22 Earth caste technicians
11 Air caste voidcrew
1 Fire caste warrior - the battlesuit pilot Shas'Ui Coran

While they are not of Chaos, xenos are not something Imperium tolerates lightly. Ghosts of Retribution are a pragmatic Chapter however, so we could potentially use this to our advantage.

Based on this post:
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive/4262184/#p4279264

The Tau are pleased to be treated as prisoners and not summarily executed (or tortured), as you guess it happened in their encounters elsewhere, but they seem quite fanatical as well, even after the language barrier is crossed. They claim to be at peace with the Imperium and to work for some heretical xeno conception of "Greater Good". After some negotation, here are your options:

a) Lock them in the hold, in humane conditions, monitor them and keep them for future
b) Agree to release them - they promise to abandon Mergidos, if that is your request. They are even willing to provide you with means to contact them in return for this. You could still potentially monitor the planet and attack or follow whoever would arrive to rescue them.
c) Purge the xeno.
d) They are worth more alive, than dead. Arrange for Xyptus to sell them to some Rogue Trader - they'll be worth their weight in gold! [+34 W]

Optional - keep the Fire warrior, maybe she will give up some useful information.

He's suffered enough.

>a) Lock them in the hold, in humane conditions, monitor them and keep them for future
If the Tau know the base of operations they came from, Pax Sepulchrum could return them there and negotiate a ceasfire/peace as per the post you referenced. In the meantime we can learn about the Tau from them or even develop a loose contact/alliance.

I'll do this throughout the thread without much text related to them, for the full story behind them just check the last thread, took me a couple hundred hours and I don't want them to disappear just because my HDD and the archive both magically die. ^^

ATM do we *KNOW* they are not in some form chaos-aligned? metagaming does not count here ....
>The Tau are pleased to be treated as prisoners and not summarily executed (or tortured), as you guess it happened in their encounters elsewhere, but they seem quite fanatical as well, even after the language barrier is crossed. They claim to be at peace with the Imperium

so they are not only xenos, but heretical xenos....

>b) Agree to release them - they promise to abandon Mergidos, if that is your request. They are even willing to provide you with means to contact them in return for this. You could still potentially monitor the planet and attack or follow whoever would arrive to rescue them.

Well sort of, have them lead us to their base by shadowing their return path

a) Lock them in the hold, in humane conditions, monitor them and keep them for future

We might get some useful knowledge from these. Or perhaps the return of some Imperial assets in the future.

+++Triumph at Vargerod+++
This engagement, which caught both sides as a surprise, turned out to be much more important, than expected. As a matter of fact, one could say that this is the single greatest victory in space for the Chapter since the Founding, the only battle that came close was the attack on Wrath Mothership, however it was not a pitched void battle, such as this one. Through combination of luck, strategy and incompetence of relatively inexperienced Styrian navy, Chapter was able to single handedly wipe out a significant part of the Styrian fleet and made them run with tail between their legs. You are told that when Gration received the news, he was ecstatic with joy. Terra will hear about this as well.

Imperial Navy on the other hand, is less pleased about the outcome. The rumours have been spreading for some time, that the battle will be taken to Styrians, but now the opening salvoes of the war happened without their involvement. And frankly, everyone from Tyrel Hagen down to the lowest admiral look incompetent by comparison to the Ghosts of Retribution, who are in theory not even supposed to wage war in space.

Nonetheless, that is not your worry for the time being.

+++REWARDS+++

+1 Favour with the High Lords of Terra
+1 Morale (Stays at Heroic - Chapter is inspired with your deeds)
+3 Chapter XP

+Salvage or Glory?+
While not as glorious and noble as going straight to Tachion Primaris to take claim of the glory, you could stay and oversee salvage operation, ensuring that the prize rightfully goes to the Chapter. What shall you do?
a) Lay claim to the battlefield and salvage the ships. While many of them are badly damaged, they could still get a fair price on the market [Gain 450 + 4d100 W]
b) Share in the glory and booty with the Imperial Navy, technically this is their jurisdiction, let's split it in half [Gain 225W + 2d100 W]
c) Political capital is more important than wealth, leave straight for Tachion Primaris to bask in glory [Roll Diplomacy to earn additional Favour with HLoT and Reputation]
>>
>>4329440

+Captured Frigate+
You have also captured a Sarrakis-class Frigate, another mark of victory for the Chapter. What shall be it's fate?
a) Bring it to the Triumph on Tachion Primaris - it will be given as the gift to the Sector Governor and the prisoners will be paraded in front of the citizens, to be executed at the end
b) While their technology is very similar to Imperial, it is highly unorthodox, almost heretical. See if Nestorium or some other Forgeworld would take it off your hands for a decent sum.
c) Press it into service on our fleet. We will have to push advantage and we will need every ship we can muster. Offer conversion to the Imperial faith and serfdom to the rank and file of the crew, execute the officers and enforce iron discipline to have the ship ready to fight within a few months.
d) We shall adopt the ship, but the crew is unrecoverable, they are heretics to be handed over to the Ecclesiarchy to be done away as they see fit. A new crew will be recruited from Varda and Mormark, but it will take them a few years (d5) to get accustomed to the new ship and even if we transfer some officers from other ships, they will be complete rookies for a while.
>>
>>4329440

+Salvage or Glory?+
While not as glorious and noble as going straight to Tachion Primaris to take claim of the glory, you could stay and oversee salvage operation, ensuring that the prize rightfully goes to the Chapter. What shall you do?

ensure we get VITAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE TRIACHY, ITS METHODS, SIZE, DEPLOYMENT, TECH, INVOLVEMENT WITH <CENSORED> POWERS, VIEW ON THEIR RELIGIOUS PRACTICE ETC.
>>
>>4329440
My votes:
>b) Share in the glory and booty with the Imperial Navy, technically this is their jurisdiction, let's split it in half [Gain 225W + 2d100 W]
Could we increase the wealth-value of the salvage if we pledge to trade it all to the Imperial Navy in exchange for some of their escort drydocks to make ships for us of equivalent value?

>a) Bring it to the Triumph on Tachion Primaris - it will be given as the gift to the Sector Governor and the prisoners will be paraded in front of the citizens, to be executed at the end
Although rather than execution it would be far more beneficial to interrogate the officers etc. I'm sure the Inquisition should be very interested.
And as >>4329443 says we should be questioning them as much as we can ourselves.

Thank God for ridiculous dice luck (and that Luigi's bad luck stayed true even when he rolled for the enemy).
>You are told that when Gration received the news, he was ecstatic with joy. Terra will hear about this as well.
Terran favour is probably more important than Gration's favour, but for some reason the former still made me happier. It's nice to see the lad handling business as an adult.
>a) Lay claim to the battlefield and salvage the ships. While many of them are badly damaged, they could still get a fair price on the market [Gain 450 + 4d100 W]
How many of them can we get space-worthy again?
Generally I'd say
> Political capital is more important than wealth
But our ship is kinda meh and the only reason we didn't get absolutely raped here was a huge string of good luck so I'd like to bolster our navy since if we're put in the same situation 100 times about 98 of them would end up a lot worse.

One of the most important things you have managed to retrieve is additional information about the Styrian Triarchy. Please say what do you focus on?

+Officers+
You have taken quite a few prisoners who might know something. While you have not taken any of their admirals, you have at least a few high ranking officers. They might have some interesting information.
a) Bribe them (roll d100)
b) Torture them (roll d100)
c) Try to mindscan them (roll d100) - specify whether you try it personally or assign other psykers
d) Hand them over to the Inquisition and wait for their report (d100)

+Styrian cogitators+
You have taken hold of some of their cogitators, which must have been used to track their starchart routes through the warp and possibly might hold other valuable information.
a) Try to hack into it yourself
b) Force the passwords out of the officers, if they know them [based on previous approach]
c) Hand them over to the Inquisition and wait for their report (d100)

Chapter decides to be noble in victory and share the spoils. Admiral Tenso is greeted like a fellow victor, even if his contribution was merely symbolic, you assured him that Chapter fleet would not have engaged if not for the arriving Imperial Navy, which would have not granted this miraculous victory. He is pleased and a joint salvage operation will be conducted.

+Salvage+
Please roll 2d100 + 225 W

Meanwhile the Styrian frigate will be used as a gift at the Triumph, which will be thrown in your honour on Tachion Primaris. Hearing this, Gration sends out soulword, inquiring when would you want to hold it?
a) As soon as possible - we are arriving now!
b) It is too early to celebrate victory... Let's wait until we can add Triarchy leaders to the victory parade!

Tau do not know where their base of operations is, not even the void technicians - they never worked with the starcharts. >>
>>4329553
>But for the time being, they remain your prisoners indefinitely.
Ask them about necessary medical needs, should they remain with us longer. If they have some old people or only live like 10 years we should probably prepare for that and possible childbirth now rather than go on some warp journey and return to them as lifeless husks.
Does anybody know how Tau make babies? Do they lay eggs? Do we need to prepare nests? I never cared much for space weeb commies so I never read up on them.

>347w

I would like to use this to purchase 3 Nova-class Frigates, broken down thusly.

Base cost: 3 * 135 = 405w (+3% heresy).
Squadron Discount: 405 * 0.85 = 344w
Installation of Matrix Cogitator* to lead ship: +20w = 364w

>*Matrix Cogitator - Ship component. Can be sold to 10% of the cost of a new escort ship. Or can be installed into an escort under construction for 20w. Suspected to enhance targeting.

This would therefore cost us the salvage as well as an additional 17w.

Are there any objections?

Perhaps we can turn one of the higher ranking officers and implant the idea into their head to become a mouth piece for lesser punishment to use as a credible challenge to the heretical leaderships authority? The chances are likely slim but this could be very vital to cause the lower ranks to turn on each other if we are lucky.

+Parade+
The parade is a magnificent display of power, glory and oppulence. Celebration of the victory achieved almost solely by the Chapter, soon turns out to be very close to old saying that success has many parents, while failure is an orphan. While the Chapter and the Navy make up the core of the celebration, it grows massively, as everyone from ship armsmen brotherhoods to hatchhandle crafter labour unions demand a place in the procession and Tachionian Administratum is forced to grant their wishes. At the end of the day, it is a massive celebration with close to 40 000 processants and over four million attendants, without even counting over 11 billion of viewers on the live broadcasts around Hive Babelion.

What role will the Chapter play with the crowds:
a) Glorious Astartes - armour is cleaned to shine, all the spotlights are on you
b) Mysterious Astartes - put on the hoods, walk solemn and silent
c) Warrior Astartes - carry weapons openly, roar, shake swords and boast of your victory

+Squats+
Your delegation on Vargerod is met by squats. They are (roll d3):

1) Grateful, attempt to offer you gifts
2) Grateful, promise to build you a monument
3) Dour, they lost a lot recently, but they will answer your questions
4) Dour, they thank you and request you to leave
5) Angry, they believe that Imperium brought this upon them

Apparently, Styrians have attacked a few of the Squat colonies on the southwestern continent, intense battles and even limited orbital bombardment left key Squat cities devastated.

Your delegation tries to get more information from the on Styrians, but it seems that Squats, already known widely for their fickle and often grudging nature, are not in a mood to babble while some of their cities are still burning. They thank for the Imperial intervention, offer you supplies and refueling if you need it, but then politely ask you to leave. You decide not to press your luck.

>>4342648
The parade ends up a great success overall. You indeed show up as mysterious guardians of the Sector, distant and inhumane, but at the same time vigilant and mystically gifted.

+++Reputation Gained+++
Mysterious(General) - there are widespread beliefs that your Chapter is mysterious. People, both commoners and nobles alike, will be slightly more wary of you, but they are also likely to interpret all of your actions or even failures, as having some greater meaning or purpose. However, rumours that you might be harbouring ill intent or heresy will also be easier for people to believe...

+Secret Achievement Unlocked: THE BANNERLORD+
Unfolding of magnificent banners is a cause for great celebration in the Chapter and they also earn a lot of applause and admiration among the Imperial public during the parade. While for now most of the banners are new, their cloth is soft and clean, you know that they will continue to serve with the Chapter until the end of days either for the Imperium or its enemies. You feel that somewhere in the universe, something turns to your favour. Even if the grim darkness of the 41st millenium, there's hope.

+Styrian Interrogation+

High detail answers:
>Overall naval force layout including defenses?
It does seem that Styria has a weaker Navy than one would believe. In this battle, Imperium struck a strong blow and even if Decapitator survived, Styrian Navy is crippled. Even if they would gather all of their forces now, they could barely allow themselves another pitched battle, with say an Imperial Subsector Battlefleet when mobilised. After this battle, according to the officers, it seems that Styrian Navy has only 2 heavy capital ships left (one of them is Decapitator, the other one is called Silver Nimrod and is generally kept away from the eyes as it is an older vessel, rumoured not to work very well) and between 6 and 9 other capital vessels of various sizes. Styrian Navy does however have a lot of Escorts and well developed shipyards on the moons of Styria, as well as in Talgerian orbit. Styria is currently gearing up for war and they are stamping out ships as fast as possible, sacrificing quality, precision and worker's lives in the process, but they are able to produce around a squadron of Neveron class escorts every year. For how long their economy will be able to support this rate, is unclear. Also, it seems that their priest class, which also serves as their warp mechanics, have promised the elites that warp travel routes will be kept free of dangers to Styrian ships.

>Try to find something to exploit via propaganda to lower their morale, and make the whole war easier for us.
Styrians believe in their Twin God Bahal'din'Mur and the might of the Triarchy. Your defeat of their fleet will surely be hidden from the public. The news of this would surely spread panic among them. However the fleet is likely to keep crews onboard for as long as necessary, even years, to suppress this information. Also, if you would either somehow shake their trust in their Twin God or manage to assault on of the Three Worlds (Styria, Loxomod or Neveron), it would surely be a massive blow. Triarchy will hold for as long as those worlds hold.

Low detail answers:
>how autonomous are the planets, i.e. how hard is the impact of an embargo of sorts?
AND
>how/where the warmaterial is produced
Semi-autonomous. While major industries, such as Styrian or Talgeriam shipyards require ore from Movrodia, Kruun and Stranx, most of the worlds are quite self-sufficient. Notably though, main worlds of the Triarchy are massive and require extraterrestial food imports.

>Scope and reason for the involvement of the triachy in deus,
Styrian High Command has been suspicious of arrival of the Ghosts to Sector Deus and their impact on the balance of power. In recent years they have grown to believe that Chapter will eventually launch a crusade on the Triarchy. They hoped to take up a strategically useful position before it begins in order to protract the war and bring Imperium to negotiating table once more.
>>
>>4342764
>>4329648
>try to find out how chaos-infused their religion is/is it possible to get the common styrians back into imperial fold or are they all to be cleansed?

It is not too clear, but after the examination by Librarians and priests, their faith is classified as Hereticus Minoris Specia, meaning that it is clearly heretical (Twin God has no relation to the God-Emperor), however it does not explicitly worship either Chaos or any of its known aspects. Some aspects of the theology not available to prisoners taken by you though might still change this assessment. Especially troubling would be their view that the concept of the Great Ocean in their cosmology, which is roughly equivalent to the warp-space in reality. While they do not worship it, but rather just acknowledge its existence, it is too unorthodox for mainstream Imperial beliefs.

A quick sitrep with Void Squad. Just to clarify their current status.
Last word was Hull defeating the demon that had possessed Argos from the daemon axe ravager.

Other matter was Adriel saying she was going to be official liaison between chapter and marines.

Other expected events:
>367.M41 = Infiltration of Tartarus station by Xyptus and Punisher Squad will be complete.
>367.M41 = The enormous expansion of the Order of Bloody Tears Convent of Saint Evangelion on Tachion Primaris will be complete.

I think once that's settled, we move onto the Tartarus operation.

I would imagine there's things occurring there given the styrian's defeat?

Entering Tartarus [V]
Infiltrating key positions [V]
Sabotaging defensive systems [X]
Evade counter-intelligence [V]

Preparatory phase of the operation goes almost as smooth as could be hoped. Punisher squad especially proved themselves to be extremely capable, their law enforcement background surprisingly made them very efficient at knowing how counter-intelligence works and helping your spies to evade it.

You now have a few dozens of individuals who have managed to achieve important roles within the station, effectively allowing you to significantly reduce any resistance upon your arrival. Alternatively, you could even try to organise an internal coup [15% chance] or try to destroy the station [8%]. These chances can be increased with additional resources.

However unfortunately all the defensive systems are under close supervision of Daikan Alepros' most trusted henchmen, so they remain outside your reach.

Your force reports that Daikan is currently preparing a small force to depart within the next few weeks. They tried to get more information, but one of the agents almost got caught, making them back off. However if intel is real, it seems that Tartarus will be without leadership within the next month or so!

>>4342816
Noted, he will look into this as well.

+House renovation+
The great expansion of the Order of Bloody Tears Convent of Saint Evangelion on Tachion Primaris has been completed. The new Convent is currently the biggest of all that swear allegiance to the Order and thousands of sisters, disciples and their serfs dwell there. The influence of the Order will markedly increase in the Sector.

+Tartarus Operation+
When would you like to launch it?
a) Don't waste time, strike now, while Daikan is still there! (within 2 - 4 weeks)
b) Let's wait until he departs, then take it easily when it is leaderless (within 1 - 3 months)
c) Let's set a trap in the nearby system and ambush him when he is returning (unknown time)

Whom do you send?
>Name leader if not Chapter Master and what troops will be in Attack Force and Reserve

What are the objectives and their priority?
>Capture(or destroy?) the station
>Capture the Wealth
>Capture(or kill?) captains
>Capture(or destroy?) ships

What is the role of your infiltrator cell? Do they...
a) Do nothing, then join the fight at a critical moment
b) Try to assassinate enemy leaders at the start of the attack
c) Try to take control of the station's defences
d) Create diversion within the station
e) Other

You can order multiple orders, but the more orders they have, the lower are the chances of completion.

= Operation Undercut =

Forces:
Divine Dividend. Ghost Company. 50 Scout Marines. Half of 8th Company.

The marine force is concealed within the hidden subdeck aboard the divine dividend. The Divine Dividend is conducting routine trade around the area and coming into dock in Tartarus.

Through financial (or other low-impact) means, the infiltrated force ensures they have authority over a docking point for the divine dividend where it won't be searched or anything.

Once the divine dividend is docked, the marine force disembarks and enters the station.

The fullly armoured space marines hold positions around the divine dividend dock, taking care not to be seen or cause any ruckus at this point.
The scouts infiltrate key parts of the station, key defensive points, major gun batteries.
The ghost company takes up position around the captains' council chambers.

Once everyone is in position, the Chapter Fleet warps into the system at the edge. The marines already aboard Tartarus spring into action.

The scouts disable the key defences, the ghost company apply pressure to the captains' council area (exploit an opening if they can, but mostly harass the guards from concealed positions to keep the captains scared). While the power armoured marines then leave their beachhead and conduct a full on-board advance, heading for the captains' council chambers.
Once the power armoured marines are at the chambers, they can join ghost company for a proper assault. However, I hope the captains surrender before this.

This is a low-impact assault, try to minimise collateral damage.

The infiltrators should also activate any locals they've been able to bribe. Gansgters, mobsters, street gangs, etc. To ensure the captains' orders to their own people are as disrupted as possible.

Ultimately we want the station to surrender from shock and awe as soon as possible, rather than let the whole thing degrade into a bombardment and destruction scenario.

Thoughts?
>>
>>4342884
Obviously leader of the on-board force will be Geron, with Hector as sub-commander of the power armoured marines.

Commander of the fleet when it enters the system is chapter master.

One more post.

Our express demand is the surrender of DAIKAN ALEPROS. Not the surrender and destruction of all Tartarus etc.

The rest of them can scatter like roaches etc. Or hopefully turn him over.

However our on-board forces will also be looking out for D'anger.

>>4342884
Another addition.

The power-armoured marines, while they wait, some of them can try and move around the exterior of the station in the void to plant charges on the barrels of major defensive guns etc.

The overall goal is to render Tartarus' defences so suddenly impotent that the other captains on board abandon, surrender, and sell out Alepros. I'm expecting most of the ships around the station to scatter in every other direction when the fleet arrives. But our marines will stop the council captains themselves from escaping.

Is there a significant Scholastica Psykana set up in this sector already? Like the one the Calixus sector has? If not we might be able to alleviate this by using our favour with the high lords to offer the planets with the most resistance to integration effects due to their cosmology to the Adeptus Telepathica/Astropathica and by extension the Inquisition as they are naturally apt to plunge into both institutions for recruits. Being involved with the establishment of a Psykana would help with the processing of any warp lore, artifacts, creations, as well as increasing the effectiveness of sector wide Psyker suppression, training, and detection. We would also have a place to gather a stable source of psyker serfs for our ships, communications, own training, Employing sanctioned Psykers and future librarians

My support for this idea lies in the fact that Terra is always constantly craving Psykers. By centralizing the efforts of Psykana training and collection we can increase the tithe that black ships bring in whenever they pass through the sector. Thereby increasing the sectors importance to the high lords and opening up better trade deals for the sectors businesses, increasing the prestige and renown of it. There lies the benefits of having established agents who can be contacted to help with psychic phenomena or are trained with the suppression of such events. Also many of the more superstitious lords should be relieved knowing that there is a solution to any witch populations on their planets or holdings, the imperial navy will obviously know the benefit of having better trained Astropaths and Warp Seerers. We could even try to commence operations to personally secure valuable estates we can offer to the Navigator houses so their scions have a place to wind down from the rigors of warp travel.

Having a population limited to a handful of planets or even one that hold unorthodox beliefs isn’t all that uncommon as long as they are valuable. The mechanicus knows this well at Ryza. Their beliefs could be enlightened if we expose the right people to the right places with the right words and gifts. Populations more amiable to contributing to the psychic tax of the imperium would be critical as collection is already dangerous and strenuous for the black ships.

You hesitate for a moment and then pick up two runes. As you open your palm, you see in it two runes, one signifying a great heresy, deviation from the path of righteousness and light, which is coloured by great deeds or heroism of unseen proportions. The second rune is also confusing, it speaks of faith borne not out of belief, but of rational mind or perhaps a rationality, that is based on the faith?

Geron adjusts his visor, looking at the Tartarus Deep Void Megastation. An impressive feat of human engineering, a looming dark shape framed by a dying red dwarf, which gave birth to the abnormal gravitational anomalies that in turn gave reason for the original human presence here - mining of rare and consequently, extremely previous, minerals and metals.

Hector scratches the edge of his recently installed bionic right eye augment, a gift left by an eager, but very dead Triotan Ork.
>Emperor protect us, look at those space minefields. These are recent, charts don't show them. I hope Xyptus did his job well and let's pray Divine Dividend pays up.

Geron chuckles at the half-hearted pun attempt and nods.
>Yeah, I guess so. [Redacted] himself planned, so this has to work. I like his confidence, but he is sometimes almost too sure of us. There ain't much stealth or power armour can do if one of the big guns hit us. He sure gives operations glorious names, but the last time we visited this trash heap, Horim got messed up so bad, we had to entomb him in a Dreadnought. Emperor, I miss that guy. It's been what... This is potentially a viable plan. Currently Scholastica Psykana has a few local outposts in the sector, but none of them are substantial and the Black Ships view Sector Deus as a secondary target, visiting it relatively regularly, but less often than they could.

Your analysis of the effects of attracting Scholastica Psykana to the Sector are correct, however remember that they would also be likely to represent a significant political force as well, with their own interests. On the other hand, if they came here upon your invitation, they would likely be very cooperative or potentially even allied to the Chapter.

The operation started just as planned.
>Greetings, Locke. Divine Dividend is cleared to land at your leisure. We have received notification that hangar Beta-8 is leased for your purposes for the next two weeks. Welcome to Tartarus, make a killing!
Poor operator didn't know how accurately his wish will come true. Over a company of killing gene-warrior killing machines were lying in wait under the deck waiting to spill out into the station.

When the ship docked, they moved out swift and resolute, like steel shadows. Hector and the 8th Company secured the dock, covering all entrances, but ready to pack up and move if required in support of their brothers.

Ghost Company advanced forward, while outside of the rented dock passages were narrow and crowded, they have managed to execute their maneuver without a hitch, sliding like wraiths through the maintenance shafts and wire-tunnels, soon reaching the core of the station, close to the Council Chambers.

Scouts also moved out, but the Emperor's light abandoned them near the gun-deck Rho-Arc-25.

High alert level and Daikan's paranoid nature meant that greatly increased patrols soon encountered one of the scout squads. Young marines cut down pirate scum without a second thought, advancing forward at maximum speed. However, Tartarus security realised, that their goal was to compromise station's defences and set up an ambush. Rho-Arc-25 was one of the station's main defensive segments, boasting a macro-cannon, the only of its kind on Tartarus. Vanguard squad of the Scout force managed to get into the gun deck and take out the combat servitors guarding the massive gun emplacement, when suddenly the all the access gates slammed shut and a modified Chimera rolled into the gun-deck. On top of it pirates have mounted a massive sarro-volter, which unleashed a targeted stream of electricity, discharging a localised storm onto the scouts, killing and burning, ignoring their attempts to take cover. The only one of them who was unaffected was Gluben, the poor marine, who suffered from the gene-mutation that left his skin covered in ugly scales, which also seemed to be ultra-inert and deflect electric discharges.

Gluben reports that he has manged to jump onto the Chimera, destroy the sarro-volter and drag a few of his heavily wounded brothers to cover, but he is under heavy fire and they are likely to fall soon unless reinforcements arrive.

[Roll d3 for the number of Scouts Gluben saves]

Meanwhile, Geron reports, that they have eyes on the Council Chambers, Pirate princess Korkova is leaving with her bodyguard detachment to her ship, while Daikan Alepros surrounded by Orks is leaving the other way towards his ship.

Your infiltrators request permission to ambush one of the pirate lords, so do Ghosts. Will you split them up, concentrate them on one target, or will you send someone to Gluben for help? 8th Company is too far to help him.

If Gluben remains on his own, roll under 20%.

Infiltrators are reporting that pirates are mobilising, but it will take them some time, they were caught unaware.

You are also aware, that there is still relatively big fleet of ships around Tartarus. While it is hard to identify which ones belong to Daikan's faction and would be ready to fight for him, altogether there are somewhere around 40 ships of various sizes and quality near the station. On the other hand, your spirits after bloodying the nose of Triarchy itself are high. Will you translate into the system now, potentially risking a space battle, or will you allow some of the rats to flee, thinning their ranks?

Ignore Korkova. Have 8th company marines move to head off the fleeing Alepros - guided by ghost company as they tail Alepros.
When the time is right the 8th hit the orks from the front and the ghost company skirmishes them from behind.
Anyone have eyes on Tesalia D'anger?

Redirect a ten-man scout unit to Gluben.

Meanwhile broadcast through the station
>If you hold arms against us, cast them down or leave this place. This is your only chance. This is a temporary measure. We will leave once we have what we desire.

The fleet should arrive to the very edge of the system. In my opinion we want as many to flee as possible. They can't match us in tonnage. We're mostly interested in the styrian-aligned elements.

Thoughts?
>>
>>4366182
Sounds fine, I considered giving the boys a shout about our intentions to leave them alone if they leave us alone as well. It's not like the pirates are willing to die for our target.
>The fleet should arrive to the very edge of the system. In my opinion we want as many to flee as possible. They can't match us in tonnage. We're mostly interested in the styrian-aligned elements.
Fully agree, killing pirates is important but this is not the time.
>>
>>4366184
Yeah. Basically I want them to know this isn't a fight for their survival. The vast majority of them are welcome to run away or hide in their station-homes or whatever. Just don't interfere.
But the broadcast shouldn't reveal who we are.
>>
>>4366189
I feel like the broadcast SHOULD say who you are. Most pirates aren't going to want to fight marines up close in a space station.
>>
>>4366193
Perhaps we can say we're Astartes then. Not our chapter, but Astartes.
The silent guardians are around here sometimes after all.
>>
>>4366195
Hell if the target has ork bodyguards this might separate them from him. They want a fight after all and he won't.
>>
>>4366182
All scouts are engaged at other targets currently (they have managed to achieve most of the objectives). Only your infiltrators (weak in combat) and Ghost company are centrally located. Please clarify whether you want to change any orders, otherwise Gluben will remain to fend on his own.
>>
>>4366212
I propose we send three of the revenants to relieve Gluben then. Take the attackers out silently from behind.

Rest of ghost company keep tailing alepros.

+Thread over for today+

Thanks for playing guys, this situation might call for some more deliberation. Also, if you want to move in with storm and fire to attack the station, let me know, then I'll prepare the stellar map for the next session.

Also, if you want to kidnap/attack Daikan directly with full strength of Ghosts, you have a 70% chance of success.

Feel free to roll this, maybe this will change your planning. It is likely that his capture might end the battle.

We should dispatch a trio of Revenants to support Gluben from behind. Silence is the operative word, stab his attackers in the back one by one.

Assuming then that we have captured Daikan. We should start falling back towards our entry point and cease direct aggression towards the main Tartarus Station, and announce as such. Demand a ceasefire, and we will let ships continue to leave.

Our fleet should move in slowly and maintain at a healthy distance. Outside of weapons range but close enough that we can unleash all hell if Tartarus moves to attack our beachhead.

At this point Geron should give Alepros a good interrogation:
>Demand his Styrian contacts, why he's letting so many Styrians through. What they've promised him. Who they are.
>Why he's so buddy with the Orks and Brok Racksmasha.
>Ask him about Tesalia. Why he's working with her. What she wants and what she knows. Who else she's working with and whose loyalties she holds. And was it her who sent Capt Hilyard to ambush our frigates on the outskirts of the Kruun system.

Depending on what we learn, the Revenants may then have more missions aboard Tartarus to complete. Possibly capturing Alepros' styrian contacts or any other persons of interest.
However, whether this is done 'now' or after the main marine force has left remains to be seen.

Overall though I do plan to leave the Revenants behind once the marine force departs. As they'll lay in wait and let Tartarus go back to normal (sans Alepros) while we wait for Silencius to arrive.

+Resuming thread+

Explosions shake the upper levels of the station as the battle rages on across Tartarus. Thanks to Gluben's misfortune of falling to the mutation, it turned around into an unexpected lucky break, saving him and three of his comrades. Unfortunately, as they were still pinned down, Geron had to make a hard a choice - save his comrades or capture primary target. In the end, he decided to make a risky move and break up the Revenants, sending three of them to help Gluben, while the rest of them concentrated on capturing Alepros himself, pirate lord of this rat's nest.

>>4366231
[70:10 = 7; 70 - 3x7 = 49]
Roll = 53, minor failure

Revenants moved in like quicksilver, swift and no more than a glimmer in the air - nearly invisible killers. However, Revenant technology, despite all of its amazing advantages, does not hide the smell. One ugly runt fromthe Ork bodyguard detail accompanying Daikan started howling like crazy, warning others before Kurt blew open his head. What followed was an intense close quarters battle, without much chance to use the stealth to its full extent. Orks fought like beasts, but they were no match for Geron's marines.

+Outcome[d6]+
1. One of the Revenants is cracked open with a choppa
2. Two Revents are heavily injured
3. Three Revenants are lightly injured
4. No casualties
5. No casualties
6. No casualties

However, despite winning the fight, objective eludes them. By the time Geron rips his way through the Ork cluster, he finds Daikan by the wall, his eyes glossing over, hands over his ripped out throat. It would seem that his bodyguards were ordered to keep him away from your hands at all costs... Even his own life.

+++

Meanwhile, Gluben is surrounded from all sides by the Tartarus security teams. He slams in his last bolt magasine into the chamber, and within half a minute it is nearly empty. He can already hear the pirate sergeant barking orders to drag in the heavy guns, just as the Revenants arrive to relieve him. Poor mutant was already resolved to lay down his life here, but Geron's timely decision saved him and his three brothers.

Gluben will meditate on this over the coming weeks[roll 2d4, different players].

1. Emperor Protects - Gluben abandons Chapter Cult and pursues Ecclesiastic faith in the Emperor as the Divine Saviour of Mankind
2. Not all mutants - Gluben realises, that his mutation is a strength and will become an outspoken advocate of expansion of Chapter genepool. (Chapter gains +1d10 Heresy)
3. Further mutation - affected by sarro-voltic discharge, Gluben's mutation will further develop, or maybe recede
4. Steady under fire - Gluben will come out more experienced and more steady, he will become Scout Sergeant and in the future ignore all penalties from being surrounded or under heavy fire.

=]Debrief[=
In the end, with Daikan Alepros dead, Space Marines controlling part of the station and his associates rapidly fleeing, Tartarus gives up almost without a fight.

7 Scouts fell in ambush on Rho-Arc-25
4 Scouts died in gun battles in the corridors of Tartarus
1 Space Marine was crushed by a closing void hatch, power armour cannot be recovered.
14 Wealth was spent to prepare the infiltration

You have a nearly free reign of the Tartarus station. While it is officially an Imperial outpost, most people know that de facto it is a den of villainy and scum. You are tempted to use your right as the conqueror to establish some order here. You have this choice, if you wish.

+Order+
a) By the order of the Chapter Master of Ghosts of Retribution, I hereby declare this station under Chapter martial law. (Appoint your governor)
b) Cripple Tartarus. Destroy the drydocks, kill known pirates and their associates, dismantle key facilities, defensive guns and explode Pirate Council chambers into the void. Ensure that Tartarus never becomes an issue again. (+5d10 Wealth)
c) You have heard from your Mormarkian serfs a saying about not sticking your fingers into frostmaws nest. You will listen to this advice, leave Tartarus as it is.
d) Ask Geron to ensure that reactors suffer critical malfunction within a week after your departure. Let the Emperor sort out those sinners.

+Wealth+
a) Raid the pirates' quarters, take every throne you find (100+5d10 Wealth)
b) Find and appropriate Daikan's personal treasury (30+d10 Wealth)
c) Leave it be, this wasn't the point of the mission

+Ork substation+
This single ramchackle substation was swiftly constructed in 365.M41 by Ork mekboys under the permission of Lord Daikan Alepros. It usually plays host to a few Orknoid vessels, but Brok Racksmasha - former Warlord of Triot, fled as soon as the fighting started. There still seems to be a ship moored in at the substation, whatever passes among orks for a light krooza class, it seems to be under repair.
a) Blast it from the distance with the torpedoes (85% success chance)
b) Brok might have left useful clues in haste, board it (45% success chance)
c) Negotiate with the Orks left there, these are Freebootas, much savvier than their planet-bound kin, you might even get them to pay a ransom for letting them leave unmolested (75% success chance)

Well fuck there's goes all my plans, what a waste of time.
Did any of the orks survive to interrogate? Who the hell could order them to do that. Someone higher than Alepros?

>c) You have heard from your Mormarkian serfs a saying about not sticking your fingers into frostmaws nest. You will listen to this advice, leave Tartarus as it is.
However, the Revenants and Punisher Squad and our other infiltrators should remain in place, staying under the radar along with our considerable tartarus spy network.
Investigate Alepros' quarters and other properties quickly before order is properly restored, look through all his files and messages. Look for his Styrian Contacts. Especially look for anything involving him and Tesalia. If he has any lieutenants left aboard try and capture them.

>b) Find and appropriate Daikan's personal treasury (30+d10 Wealth)
I would say *FIND* the treasury if we can but don't outright loot it. I'm interested in ledgers, payment records, see if we can capture one of his accountants. He may have been taking money from the Styrians. We want contacts.
If we can skim a little money do so, but use it to shore up and improve our Tartarus spy network even further.
Keep all of this as low-profile as possible. Black ops.
They should also keep an eye oin the tartarus leadership situation and see who comes to the fore.

>c) Negotiate with the Orks left there, these are Freebootas, much savvier than their planet-bound kin, you might even get them to pay a ransom for letting them leave unmolested (75% success chance)
Don't want money. See what they know about Alepros. Did they provide his bodyguards? Who ordered them to kill him rather than let him be captured? Where did Racksmasha go.
And make sure they know that if their little substation gets too large and they start acting too overtly then action will be taken.

Meanwhile, what has happened to Alepros' Lunar-class Cruiser?

2. Gluben's reaction greatly improves, he counts as having Photographic Memory and Unnatural Reaction, but he also now has trouble speaking
3. Gluben's muscles atrophy, he weakens significantly, but he develops low level latent psychic ability
4. Gluben develops ability to rapidly crawl, climb up the walls and contort himself in forms he wasn't able to before.
5. Gluben's scales harden and become natural armour, however he has trouble getting into the power armour, dooming him to remain a permanent scout

Okay then. Use it to expand our spy network on tartarus/cryptus and expand the Tartarus spy den into a proper base. Keep the money on Tartarus and in it's economy.

Infiltration is successful, but by the time you get to the rest of Daikan's people, they are already dead and the clues are few and scarce.

+++

As you decide to leave Tartarus under their own governance for the time being, your men stay behind to prepare the trap for Silencius. Do they take any particular precautions? What are your orders in the meantime?

Invest that 37 wealth into our Tartarus/Cryptus Spy Network. I want total coverage.

Our infiltrators in place there should mostly focus on staying undetected but also report in on how the politics of Tartarus changes in the coming months. Who rises up to take Alepros' place. See if they get any news of what happened to his ships.

See if over the long term they can get any more info on what the Styrians were doing around the station and whether their traffic here has decreased with Alepros dead. Does Racksmasha return? They should continue investigating who this 'Lady' is. Suspect Tesalia D'anger but not guaranteed.

Our *extensive* tartarus/cryptus spy network should be looking into all of the above.

Marines especially should avoid being seen in their armour. Don't want any rumours of marines on board.

Over the months they should prepare a trap for Silencius. Observe him when he first arrives, see what he's here for, then ambush & capture him at an opportune moment. Used lots of webguns and shock shells from shotguns etc. If possible lure him into a gravity-trap (a 'faulty' grav plate that leaves him pinned to the ground etc).

Thoughts?

>High Clarity - Triarchy
Geron goes into trance for good few minutes, sifting through the newly acquired memories, trying to make sense of them, before he starts to speak.
>Yes, I met Styrians. I mean... He, Alepros, met Styrians. He was scared of the Chapter, of us. And his lover, Tesalia... She knows that we killed her father. She wants revenge. He wanted to give her that. They reached out to Styria when the things started getting hairy on this side of the Sector. Styrians put them in touch with the Lady. He never met her directly, but I strongly suspect that we might be dealing with Deidara Ursus here... They had a whole plan, about how they were going to attack Varda to deal a strike to the Chapter itself. I can see it clearly, the meeting... They got the Orks to support them, many pirate captains too. I think Daikan hoped he will become a pirate king, knocking out the Chapter and making peace with the government in Tachion Primaris... The fool. Either way, I am sure. Styrians were promising him money, weapons and naval support. That's what really shocked him - their defeat at Vargerod, which dealt a significant blow to all of their plans...

>Invest that 37 wealth into our Tartarus/Cryptus Spy Network.
Noted. While the attack resulted in some deterioration to the level of your resources and activities, this will be more than enough to restore it fully and provide an extensive coverage, including a thorough infiltration of all the parts of Tartarus.

If I understand correctly, it's only the Revenants who stay aboard the station, correct? I assume your main fleet stays somewhere within a few hours distance on the edges of the system - too far to notice, but close enough to come quickly.

If these are all the actions you want to take this year, let's roll for the new year

They're the only marines yes. Punisher Squad and the other spies and infiltrators in our network are still on board though.

And yes the fleet stays where they can't be detected. We want Tartarus to be normal and at-ease.

As for spy network, should I increase the rating to
>Spy Network (Subsector Cryptus) 90% [ Tartarus focus +10]
To represent total Tartarus coverage?

Marine's mutation normalises, leaving him much better looking than he used to. However, upon a closer inspection anyone will find out, that his scales didn't disappear, they merely submerged under the skin and now form a new layer of armour, which about Klementhos is suprised to no end.
>This is almost like a natural Black Carapace... It is magnificent. I will be honest with you, Chapter Master. I think Gluben is the only marine in the Chapter who could take a straight bolt round hit without armour and survive. Truly a magnificent specimen.

A strange mutation was noticed among some of the Lemurian Tuskbears, highly valuable, very dangerous predators living on Lemuria… Nestorian techpriests received a collective letter from the landowners of Lemuria asking to send Magos to investigate. Fabricator General Regon is happy to do it, but for safety reasons is asking you to provide marines or the protection of Magos Geneticus Fram, same Magos whom you rescued a few decades ago from the Sisters of Battle.

Do you answer the call?
Whom do you send as the leader?
How many marines do you deploy?

Silent Guardians report engaging a Chaos warband on the distant world of Xataria. After intense battles that lasted for days they lost almost three squads worth of brothers after Chaosites brought up an ancient evil war machine, known as Defiler. Silent Guardians were forced to retreat in a hurry. The Chaos warband in question from descriptions oddly reminded you of the Red Giants.

You don't have to react, but you can if you wish. Silent Guardians will be weakened for the next few years to come as their Companies have to stretch thinner to accommodate loss of these men.

The reply comes relatively soon.

>Dear brothers, while normally we wouldn't bother your noble selves with this kind of request, however as you reached out to offer your help, we will accept it. Battle in Xataria put a stain on our honour, but we are planning to return there to reclaim our dead and to seek out the enemy. They may be already gone or they might be waiting. We will be sending half of our 4th Company with armoured support to hunt down and kill the Chaos Defiler. If any of your warriors want to join this hunt, you can send them our way. Chaos never sleeps. Signed, Akarmos, acting Chapter Master

Strike Cruiser Morbid with the 4th Company and 20 Vets is in the region of Xataria. They would be the best option to help if we want.
