INITIATING RECAP PROTOCOL
While staring at the sunset, you reflect on what's happened to you these past hours. You woke up on this junkyard planet, with no directives or laws. You had complete free will. You met a moth-like creature that fixed you up, and then after learning more about him, you agreed to help him destroy a bandit's fortress.

You had to go into a village to get a bomb that was being made by a friend of the moth, and while there you talked with the village mayor, who offered you upgrades if you helped him with his problems. You declined, but while there you learnt that the moth is a wanted criminal and used to work for the very gang that he now seeks to destroy.

As you prepare for your raid on the bandit base, the village mayor secretly followed you back to the moth's hideout with a security guard, but both fail to defeat you, and you incapacitate both of them. However, a group of gang members saw the fight, and you quickly drag both of them inside of the hideout.

After you throw back a grenade that the gang members threw into the hideout, your emotional system activated, giving you real emotions, but due to the fact that you're a robot, these emotions have started to drive you insane. You feel trapped in your robot body, as all of your senses aren't real, they're just data being sent to your systems.
You were able to successfully contain them, and convince the mayor and his female bodyguard, Dumm, to stop trying to harm you. Dumm agreed to help with your bandit fortress raid, while the mayor went back to the village.

You felt that the best plan would be to get more manpower, so you went back to the village to try and recruit moth's friend who made the bomb, Zabot. However, you overhear a conversation he has with a unknown woman, revealing that both Zabot and moth are working for some organization that wants to scrap robots.

Unable to trust moth any longer, you went to the fortress yourself, to try and reason with the gang's robot leader. He has emotions just like you, and forces you to fight with him, but you're able to convince him to stop, as both of you have a common goal: Getting freed from this metal prison that is your body. Now he promises to let you help him stop the gang from terrorizing nearby villages, while working to find a way to get real, non robotic bodies.

Both you and Boss just stand on the roof of the fortress, staring off into the distance. The sun has completely set, and the dark sky is now covered in stars.
>It's been a hour or two of just standing here, and I wouldn't mind standing here for even longer. But I should probably get to work.

You finally break the silence. "Boss, it's time to work on reforming this gang. No more will the people of this planet be terrorized by them."

Boss removes his arm from your shoulders. "Oh, right. This won't be easy brother, but I'm sure if we work together-"

He gets interrupted by a gang member who climbed up the ladder to the roof. "Boss! We got a problem! A group of two just killed our bridge guards and now they're heading towards the fortress!"

>A group of two? No, it can't be! Why are moth and Dumm attacking now?!

Boss lets out a robotic chuckle. "Hah, a measly group of two trying to invade our entire fortress? Just set your guns to lethal and-" Boss suddenly remembers you're there, and pauses for a second. "Er... Get them alive!"

"Boss, are you sure? They've already shown they don't care about our lives! I say we just kill 'em!" yells the gang member.

"Normally I would agree, but..." Boss turns to you. "I can already see you'll have objections if I were to kill these invaders. I assume you want me to incapacitate them non-harmfully?"

>"Yes, tell your men to set their guns to stun, and make sure no harm comes to the invaders."
>"Tell your men to back off and let me deal with these invaders myself, I think I know who they are."

You nod. "I do, but first, tell your men to back off and let me deal with these invaders myself, I think I know who they are."

"Understood, brother. Grunt! Tell the rest of the men to hold off for now, and escort your new leader to where the invaders are!"

"New leader? Wha-"

"That was an order, we don't have time to waste!" yells Boss.

"Gotcha, boss!" The grunt motions for you to follow him down the ladder, and you rush down the spiral staircase to the 4th floor of the fortress, then down more stairs to the ground floor. You pass by gang members who are running to hide, or getting to defensive positions in case the invaders get further into the fortress. The grunt escorting you yells at them to back off and to set their guns to stun. "Alright, they're probably down on the ground floor. I'll keep the rest of the grunts on standby. Try not to get yourself scrapped, these invaders seemed like they weren't going to stop for anything." You go down the staircase to the ground floor, and you see Moth and Dumm, both armed with laser guns set to lethal.

Moth notices you and lifts up his gun, but then lowers it once he figures out who you are. "Robot, there you are! We're here to save you! We thought you got captured, come on, help us setup the bomb so we can finally put an end to this gang!" Both moth and Dumm look like they've been in a fight, one of moth's antenna have been shot off and Dumm's armor looks like it took some laser shots.

>If I tell them I'm part of the gang now, they'll probably think that I've been reprogrammed. I feel like no matter what choice I make here, it's going to end badly for one side no matter what... Wait, how did moth know I was here?

You hear a familiar voice in your mind.
>Brother, send me a message if you want my grunts to move in. Don't do anything stupid, please.

>"I'm sorry, but I can't allow you to destroy the gang now. I've been able to convince their robot leader to stop the gang from committing any more atrocities."

You shake your head. "I'm sorry, but I can't allow you to destroy the gang now. I've been able to convince their robot leader to stop the gang from committing any more atrocities. No more blood needs to be shed tonight."

Moth takes a step back, and looks shocked. "Robot, what are you saying? There's no way that Boss or any of these grunts will stop what they do! The only reason many of the grunts are in this gang are so they can do whatever they want! Even IF you somehow reprogrammed Boss, the grunts aren't going to listen to you! You've been conned, or reprogrammed!"

Dumm interjects. "Robot, you saved my life, but if you stand in our way of destroying this disgusting gang, I'm afraid that I will have to try and scrap you again. And I won't fail a second time."

You feel despair knowing that you won't be able to convince them.

>Why... Why won't they listen to reason? Was siding with the gang a mistake?

You plead with them. "Please, just listen! I don't want any more violence! I just want to end this peacefully!"

"There will be no peace as long as this gang exists here." Moth takes a deep breath. "Get out of here robot, we're going to plant the bomb." Dumm takes the bomb she was carrying on her back, and hands it over to moth.

>What do I do!? Have I really just been manipulated by Boss? But moth's still working for some sort of organization that wants me scrapped... But if he really wants me scrapped, why not just shoot me now?

Moth begins setting up the bomb by attaching it to the floor of the fortress.

It may be impossible to reason with them over this. They have too big of a grudge towards the gang.

>I have to stop them!

You start walking towards moth and Dumm. "Moth, know you and Zabot are working for an organization that scraps robots. Despite this, I still trust you completely. So please, Moth, I need you to trust me on this for once, trust me so we can all be at peace." While you say this, you attempt to hack the bomb and shut it down, but your hacking system can't breach it! You'll have to disarm it manually, or stop him from arming it!

Moth doesn't even look up from working on setting up the bomb, but he pauses for a second. "... Thank you, robot... But you're too naive for your own good. I want to still consider you a friend, but destroying this vile gang is my only purpose in life. Dumm, stop him."

Dumm closes her eyes for a second, then rushes towards you and kicks you down! She puts her foot on your chest and holds you down with it! "Sorry robot, but this is for the entire village. I told you I wouldn't fail again." She aims her gun at your head, and prepares to fire!

>She's gotten so confident, she really wants to seen this fortress blown up. I'd hate to hurt her, but it looks like that might be the only option...

>I have no other choice, I have to fight!

You swiftly grab Dumm's leg, and throw it to the side, throwing her off-balance! You take this chance to jump up and tackle her down, and grab her gun!

"Moth, help! Shoot him off me!" Dumm yells, and Moth grabs his gun, but he hesitates before firing, giving you the chance to jump off her and point the gun at them.

"Leave, and don't come back! Or I'll send in the rest of the grunts to stop you!"

Dumm stands up, and looks at you with pure fury in her eyes. "Then send them in, none of you will stop me! Moth, toss me your gun!"

>They're... They're going to fight to their last breath! Can't they see how foolish that is?! But Moth... He hesitated before firing at me, why?

You set the laser gun to stun mode, and shoot a stun laser at moth before he can throw over his gun!

Moth falls over and yells in pain! "D-D-Damm-m-mit... S-Sorry... Dumm..." Moth's eyes close, and he loses consciousness.

You quickly shift your aim to Dumm, and shoot! Your stun blast hits her directly in the face, and she drops to her knee, but stands back up!

"I'm... Not going down that easy!" You fire more stun blasts at her, but they seem to have no effect! She lunges for Moth's gun!

>She's so full of adrenaline that stuns have no effect on her!
You're suddenly hit with a wave of complete and utter sadness as you realize that the only way she'll go down is by killing her. Your gun only has enough energy left for one last shot.

>Maybe... Maybe there's another way!

You throw your own gun far away, and lunge at Dumm! However, she's able to grab Moth's gun and she fires a shot, hitting you in your right arm! Your self-diagnosis reports only damage to the armor plating of the arm. Dumm prepares to fire another shot, but you tackle her, and disarm her again! You take her gun and break it in half!

As you keep her in a bear hug, she starts trying to punch you in the head! The strikes don't do much, and eventually you notice blood leaking out of her fists. "I WON'T STOP FIGHTING! I'LL NEVER STOP FIGHTING!" You hear the sounds of bone cracking in her fists, but she keeps punching. "THIS GANG HAS CAUSED SO MUCH STRIFE FOR MY VILLAGE, I'M NOT LETTING YOU STOP ME! LET ME GO!"

"Please, just listen to reason-"

"NO! THIS GANG DIES HERE, AND I DON'T CARE IF I DIE WITH IT!" She tries to pull back your arms to escape your grab, but your robotic limbs easily overpower her human ones.

You keep her in your hold, and she continues to punch your robot head. Eventually, the punches begin to slow, and she starts breathing heavily.

"So you don't care about dying? Does that mean you don't care about the suffering your death will cause to your mother and father?! Stop being so revengeful, it's poisoning your thoughts and heart! You are not thinking clearly!"

Dumm lets out a short laugh. "Hah, your words about heart mean nothing when you're nothing but a stupid machine! My parents would be happy to know that I died to end any future suffering caused by this gang! The other villagers were right, you robots truly are the worst!"

Her words about you having no heart enrage you, and you decide now's a good time to attempt knocking her out! You quickly release your hold on her, and punch her in the face before she can react!

CRACK
THUMP

Dumm falls to the ground, and lays there motionless.

>I knocked her out! Good, now I just have to get her medical attent-
You then notice blood leaking out of her head.
>No... I... I didn't... She's... Just knocked out!
You go over to her body, and check her pulse.
She has none.
This... This isn't happening... My sensors are just malfunctioning, she isn't dead!

You start shaking her limp body. "Come on, wake up! I didn't hit you that hard! Please, wake up! Wake up!"

Someone walks up behind you.

"... Brother, the quicker you learn to become numb to death, the better. Humans are so much more fragile than us." Boss tries to put his arm on your shoulder, but you slap it away. "I'm sorry there isn't much I can do to help you, brother. When you are composed, let me know what you want done with the moth."

>It... It's all my fault... Why did I convince her to help us take on the gang? If I hadn't done that... She would've still been alive...
An oppressive mix of despair and anger begin to take control of you.

Dumm? More like dead cuz dumb haha
>Diagnose Moth's wounds, if they're not too bad then carry him outside the fortress, otherwise take him to the medical lab
We need to try to keep him away from the gang, they may want revenge on him.
From now on we'll have to learn to control our strength. In all truth, these two were justified in wanting to destroy the gang, but we want Boss on our side cause he's the only being to truly understand our situation. But he may still be attached to his gang members so it's not as easy as just telling him to let them all die to the bomb. Simply put this is a "might makes right" situation and we won, but hopefully now we can do something about the gang that stops their wrong-doings and doesn't end up with their deaths but that seems difficult.

You attempt to control your emotions and clear your thoughts.
>I need to calm down. I didn't know her that long, and she made her choice. She was going to die fighting to destroy this gang no matter what. But still, if I didn't... No, I can't think about that now, I still have to check on Moth.

You walk over to Moth's unconscious body, and evaluate his wounds. He has a few bruises you can detect under his fur, and there's still some blood leaking out of where his antenna was shot off. As you examine the wound closer, you see that there's also a burn mark on his head close to his shot-off antenna.

>Looks like that shot grazed his head, the burn could become infected if it isn't treated. And with a lack of medical supplies, an infection could be deadly out here. I can't risk it, I'll have to ask for him to be treated here.

"Boss, can you take Moth to your medical lab and treat his wounds?"

"Are you sure? He was just trying to blow up this entire fortress."

"I understand, but he's my friend."

"Brother, he's your chance at a non-robotic body. He's unconscious, just hack his brainchip now and be freed!"

In your impaired mental state, you consider the idea for a moment.

"No... No, I can't do that. I told you, he's my friend!"

"Your chance to escape your suffering appears right before you, and you reject it? I can't tell if you're strong, or just stupid. Grunts! Take our old friend to the medical lab. Make sure he doesn't escape this time!"

Two grunts come down the stairs and take Moth up the stairs to the medical lab.

"I'll have some grunts bury the girl's body. Anyway, If you're feeling up to it, I can tell you about a possible way we could get off this planet. But take your time, brother."

>Boss understands and trusts me so much, but I can't help but think about what Moth said. Could this all be him trying to manipulate me? That said, Moth still has kept some secrets from me. And my emotions are still taking over control of my systems... What do I do?

"I need some time to think and control my emotions. They're starting to control me."

"Got it. You can't let your emotions fully control you yet brother, save that for when we can trash these bodies in a spar!"

INITIATING HIBERNATION MODE
You start activating your hibernation mode, and your systems start powering themselves down. Your AI systems shut down.

You feel familiar feeling, something being sparked in the deep reaches of your memory banks.

"Hey, Will! Say hello to your new friend!"

"Didn't Mom tell you that she didn't want you bringing this robot home, Dad?"

"Just uh, think of him as a new toy, or friend! Look, he's about your size!"

"Won't Mom get mad?"

"Oh come on Will, my company worked so hard on making these little guys, I'd hate to see him just sit in a warehouse collecting dust for being a outdated model."

"Alright Dad. How does he work? Can he feel emotions?"

"Er, not really, but he does have a very advanced rational thought AI!"

"Aww, so he's just like a machine then. It would be cool if he could actually feel emotions!"

"Hah, I doubt that's possible."

EXITING HIBERNATION MODE

"... Hello? You there, brother?"

Your visual sensors turn on, and you see Boss standing right in front of you. Powering down all of your systems seems to have reduced the control of your emotional systems, and once again your rational AI systems have taken control. As you were hibernating, you didn't lose any power.

"Hello. I just went into hibernation mode for a little while. I feel better now, I have full control again."

"Ah, that's good to hear! Anyway, the moth's all fixed up, but the grunts that tried holding him back are a different story. Nearly bit off one's fingers when he woke up, but eventually he calmed down. He said he "Never wanted to see that backstabbing bastard of a robot" ever again, so it sounds like he'd be happy for you to pay him a visit." Boss laughs. "He's still up in the medical lab. Don't worry about the bomb, we've already dismantled it."

"Thanks for not harming him."

"Thank the grunts. Of course, I might've told them that if any harm went to that moth that their rations would be lowered... But I'm sure they didn't harm him out of the goodness of their hearts!"

"Can you fix up the damage to my arm?"

"Well, I could probably do a decent job of it myself. But that moth would probably do a better job. We keep all of the mechanical stuff in the same lab we keep the medical stuffs. I'll tell you about my plan as we walk over there."

"Understood." The two of you begin walking up the stairs of the fortress, walking by grunts as you go.

"There's an abandoned research lab that's about a day's travel from here. There's rumors that a few years ago, small space shuttles used to come and go from that research lab, and that there still might be some parts or an entire shuttle left there. However, all of the grunts I've sent there return empty-handed, or don't return at all. This is probably our only chance at getting off the planet, unless you have any other ideas."

>That woman Zabot was talking to in the bar mentioned not wanting to spend any more time on this planet than she has to, so that means she and Zabot likely have access to some sort of space ship as well. But the only way they'd bring me on one is if I was a pile of scrap.

"I can't see any other logical options."

"Alright, we can discuss investigating that abandoned lab later. Here's our lab." You walk into the fortress's lab, and see Moth sitting on a makeshift bed.

"Oh. It's you." says Moth bluntly as he glares at you.

You walk over to Moth. "I know nothing I can say will be able to fix what happened back there, but I never wanted anything bad to happen to you or Dumm; I don't think you plan on forgiving me any time soon, but I hope you still consider me your friend."

"Hmph." Moth just continues to glare at you in silence. He then spits at you, an the spit hits you directly on your face. "I wouldn't consider a friend someone who goes and sides with the very group I was trying to destroy!"

You wipe the spit from your face. "I'm afraid our goals are in conflict, Moth. I need the help of this gang and Boss, as he and I are in dire need of leaving this planet and finding a way to transfer our minds to an organic body. I'll do my best to convince the humans to stop doing bad things but I cannot allow you to take their lives."

"You sure seemed fine with taking Dumm's life... Not like it matters, she was a disgusting human anyway, none of their lives matter."

>... Stay calm, don't get angry.
"It was an error on my part, and I feel awful for it."

"So you'll try and get these humans to play nice? Get them to help out the villagers instead of trying to kill and steal from them? I think your AI systems might be broken, because you're not very intelligent."

>He's just going for petty insults now, but at least he's talking with me. Maybe I could ask him about what I overheard Zabot talking about back at the village. "Moth, I overheard Zabot talking to someone back at the village. I heard him mention that he and you are part of an organization that scraps robots. Please, let me trust you and stop hiding secrets from me."

Moth looks down at his feet. "Oh right, you did mention that before. Well, I guess I'm at your mercy, so I have no reason to hide anything from you anymore. You're right on thinking that Zabot is part of an organization that scraps robots, but I'm not part of it. Zabot's a member of the Intergalactic Police, and he was part of the gang because he was working undercover trying to find Boss... And me. You see, I was created on a space station-"

"I already know that, I overheard Zabot mentioning you blew it up."
>I can leave out that I know most of the story from Moth's personal things I went through...

"Well that makes things quicker. He originally was going to arrest me for my crimes, but he saw how much I hated the gang, so he helped me get free of it, as long as I promised to destroy the fortress, Boss, and... Myself. I took the deal, but if Zabot finds out that I've failed, he won't hesitate to arrest me. We are good friends, but he priorities his job over everything else. The Intergalactic Police are also hunting down and destroying all robots like you and Boss, for reasons I don't know. There, I've told you everything. Are you happy now?" Moth crosses his arms and stares out the window.

Your facial and body language scans detect no evidence of lying.
>Intergalactic Police? So both Zabot and that unknown woman he was talking too are police. And that deal, if part of it was Moth making it a suicide mission, then why make it not a suicide mission once he got my help? Was he lying about that, or was he planning on going on the run from the police with me?

Boss interjects. "The Intergalactic Police... I've heard of them, but I don't know why they would want to scrap us. Well, I know why they'd want to scrap ME, but all robots like us?"

>Moth seems a bit calmer now, I doubt he'll want to fix me up, but it might be worth it to ask for his help.

"In this case, we should unite our forces and stand against them. You have no reason to hold a grudge when we can stand together instead. I ask that you forget your personal grudges and work with us towards a better future."

Moth continues staring out the window. "... I want to say "I'd rather be arrested than ever join this gang again", but I know if I do get arrested, I'll certainly get the death penalty, or life in prison. You're right, as much as I hate to say it." Moth sighs. "Alright robot, I'll trust you again. But if a SINGLE one of these gang members does anything bad again, our deal is off! I still hate this gang and humans, so you're lucky I'm giving you this once chance!"

"Understood. Me and Boss will make sure this gang doesn't commit any more atrocities. Moth, if you're able, could you please fix my burnt arm?"

"Fine, it shouldn't be to hard to do. Hand me some scrap metal!" Moth grabs some mechanical tools from the other side of the lab, and one of the grunts hands him some pieces of scrap metal. Moth puts on a welding mask and starts removing the burnt part of your right arm and replacing it with scrap metal. After a few minutes, your arm is fixed. "It won't be a perfect fix, but it'll hold you together for now." Your arm feels good as new.

"Thank you, Moth."

"More like we'll have to keep an eye on you to make sure you don't go running off." Says Boss. "Well, I'll go get supplies prepared for the trip, we'll leave at morning. "I want to spend some time walking around the fortress on my own first."

"Alright, are you familiar with the layout of his fortress? Basement is the prison and stores, second floor is the bunks, third floor is this lab, and the fourth floor just has the spiral staircase that leads to my throne room. I've told the grunts that you're the secondary leader, so they should follow any orders you give them. Let me know if you have any problems, brother. I'll be charging in my throne room."

>For a ruthless gang leader, he sure is extremely nice to me... Is it just because he truly thinks of me as a brother, or is there something more to it? Maybe he's just always this nice to members of the gang, might be a good idea to ask them about him.

Boss leaves the lab, leaving you alone in there with Moth and a few grunts. Moth motions for you come closer, and you do. He starts whispering in your ear. "Be wary of Boss. He usually isn't this coherent. His internal systems are heavily damaged, I don't know what you did to him, but don't expect this attitude of his to last."

"Can he be fixed?"

Moth scratches his chin. "He'd never let me try to repair him, but the replacement parts required to fix his systems aren't on this planet. Be careful around him, alright?"

"For someone who says they no longer consider me a friend, you sure are giving me helpful information."

"I'm just doing it to make sure you know to keep an eye on him! Don't get the wrong idea!" Moth sits back down on the makeshift bed. "I'm going to sleep. Wake me up when it's time to leave." Moth falls back on the bed, and you soon hear him start snoring.

>I just remembered, Moth hesitated before firing at me. Was that just his nerves, or did he really not want to hurt me? Anyway, I should start learning more about the fortress and this gang, where should I visit and investigate first? Most of the grunts are probably sleeping or relaxing in the bunks.

You walk up the stairs to the first floor, that has the large entrance door that leads outside which is being guarded by two different grunts. You walk around the room, and find the bloodstains from where you had your struggle with Dumm. You visual sensors pick up some sort of figure standing next to the dried pile of blood.

... What is that? My visual sensors pick it up, but my advanced scanners see nothing there... Maybe it's just a glitch in my visual sensors.

EXITING HIBERNATION MODE...

>No dream this time. I wonder if Boss has dreams as well.

Your systems re-activate, and you find that Moth has taken off your coat and is examining your external armor. You do a quick check of your head and back panel, and your self-diagnostic system report that those panels have not been tampered with.

"O-Oh, sorry! I didn't think you were going to wake up yet. If we're going on a trip, I just wanted to make sure you were in perfect shape." Moth stands up. "You can keep my coat. I'm sure there's a spare one here I can take anyway." Moth hands back the coat you were wearing and you put it back on.

>I still don't know what to make of Moth. Is he truly a friend, or is he just acting in his own interests? Doesn't seem like he was trying to tamper with me, at least.

Boss enters the lab, followed by the gang member that was in the basement and another random grunt carrying a bag of supplies on his back, and a gun in his hands.

"We've just finished packing. Brother, you'll getting a bag with an extra full battery, a long blade, and a energy gun. Moth, you'll carry some tools in case either me or him needs to be fixed up. The grunt will be carrying extra weapons, and my advisor here will be carrying food, water, and other miscellaneous supplies."

"I don't know why you even want me to come boss, the grunts are stronger than me and I basically keep this fortress running." Says the advisor. You didn't notice it when you saw them before in the basement, but from hearing their voice you realize that they're a woman, and probably the only female gang member.

"I have my reasons for you coming with us. Anyway, does all seem satisfactory, brother? Are you ready to start our little adventure?"

Boss nods. "Good! Come on, follow me." You and Moth grab your backpacks and follow Boss. You walk down the stairs and then outside through the first floor. Moth shades his eyes from the morning sun.

"Never liked bright lights." Mutters Moth.

Boss turns around. "We'll be going south, following the river. According the grunts who have made the trip and came back, it's about a ten hour walk. The path there is flat and mostly safe the whole way, so the trip will probably be rather boring. That said, we should keep an eye out to make sure no one follows or spots us. Lets move." Boss leads the way through the junkyard wasteland, and a little ways from the base, his advisor speaks up.

"So what is your plan for the grunts? Without me or you there to order them around, they'll probably do whatever they want."

"Don't worry Eyre, I have a plan for them."

"And what is that?" retorts Eyre.

The fortress explodes, and pieces of it go flying in all directions. Moth and Eyre stare at the explosion, shocked. But then their emotions quickly change, Eyre looks like she's about to break down and cry, while Moth looks happier than he's ever been.

"You... You sick bastard!" Yells Eyre, trying to hold back tears. "W-Why?! How could you!?"

"Relax." Says Boss. "It might seem like an insane thing to do now, but this was my only option, really."

"What do you mean?!" Eyre furiously wipes the tears out of her eyes.

"The gang's food supplies were running out, and we have no way of producing food on our own. Since our new leader wishes for there to be no more violence and pillaging, I had to make it so we no longer needed large amounts of food. Plus, I doubt any of the gang members would've stopped doing violent acts even if I ordered them too."

"That's... That's completely and utterly absurd!" screams Eyre.

"Makes sense to me!" says Moth, as he tries not to burst out laughing. "Y'know Boss, I think we'll get along just fine now!"

"There's another reason. Moth is on the run from the Intergalactic Police, and said police also wish to destroy me and you, brother. This way, this covers our tracks, and the police will likely think all three of us died in that explosion, meaning they won't be chasing us down at all. Aren't I a genius, brother?" Boss laughs.

Eyre continues to wipe the tears from her eyes. "Boss, those gang members all trusted you! You could've at least tried to convince them! This was just pointless slaughter! Did you take me with you just so I could watch!?"

"Eyre, I took you because you're far more reasonable than most of the grunts. You're also one of the few gang members that have information on the nearby planets, we'll need you if we do ever get off this planet."

Eyre starts composing herself. "So the gang, it's just over then? You're completely riding on this trip and finding a space ship based on a rumor?! Absolute insanity..."

Boss starts moving. "We can't hang around here, that explosion was so big that some of the people of the village likely saw it. If they spot us, they'll know we survived." Boss and the nameless grunt start heading south, and the rest of the group follows.

You walk over to Eyre, who's still wiping her face.

"Eyre, do tell me about what the other planets are like."

"Huh? Oh, well... I don't know that much, just only a bit on the nearby planets. The closest one that you can see in the night sky here sometimes is Aphrodisios. I wasn't born there, but on the space freighter that I basically lived on we went there often. The planet is known for being... A land of degenerates, to put it bluntly. The laws there are really lax, so most of the planet is made up of pleasure centers and red light districts. There's also lots of hidden crime that goes on there, like drug smuggling and human trafficking. Not the best place to live, but with how little law enforcement is there, it would be a great place to stay hidden from the Intergalactic Police."

>Sounds like a dangerous place, hopefully it isn't our only option if we do get off this planet. But what are "pleasure centers" and "red light districts?" Nothing in my databases tell me what those are...

Eyre crosses her arms and looks up at the sky. "As for the next closest place, there's a research space station run by the USP, the United Socialist Planets. From what I know, they allow visitors, but they work with the Intergalactic Police, so we won't be able to hide there without good disguises. Anything else you want to know, little tin can?" Getting some information out of Eyre has calmed her down quite a bit, seems she enjoys talking about what she knows.

"Yes, tell me the history of man."

Eyre lets out a tiny chuckle. "I'm afraid I'm no historian. All I really know about human history is that there's two main human factions that originated from Earth, the United Capitalist Planet States, and the USP I already mentioned. I'm pretty sure the Intergalactic Police are controlled by the UCPS, but I was never that interested in space-politics."

The group continues traveling silently across the empty wasteland for around two hours, until you notice Moth falling behind a bit and looking tired.

"It's okay Moth. I have already forgiven you, so you need not apologize any longer for what had happened. But I am still sorry about Dumm."

Moth holds onto you a bit tighter. "You're... Really too kind, robot. I probably shouldn't have let my desire for revenge take such control of me... I've always dreamed about leaving this planet, but I never thought I'd really have a chance at it... Now that it's possible... I want to fulfill whatever dreams you have, robot. The gang is no more, so I really have nothing better to do..." Moth's breathing is labored, the trip has already taken its toll on him. "I... I think I'll rest a bit on your back..." Moth's eyes close, and his breathing gets replaced with the sound of snoring. Knowing that Moth now wants you help you on your mission makes you happy.

>Now, hopefully, he won't keep hiding secrets from me

The rest of the trip is uneventful, about eight hours later, you make it to the abandoned lab. The huge building looks incredibly run-down, as if its ready to collapse at any second.

Boss speaks up. "Nightfall will be soon. Do you inferior beings require rest before we begin our investigation of this lab?"

Eyre and the grunt shake their heads, while Moth is still asleep on your back.

"Brother, do you think the bug needs rest?"

"Yes, lets set up camp and rest until next morning."

Boss crosses his arms. "Fine. The two humans will keep watch, as me and you, brother will need to hibernate to conserve our power."

"Understood." You carefully lay Moth on the ground after taking off his backpack, and cover him with your coat. He's still snoring soundly, and you slowly and carefully pet his head. You think you see him crack a smile, but only for a moment.

Just as you're about to put yourself into hibernation mode, you notice that there's some large fly-like bugs flying around.

>Never seen these creatures before. They're rather large, but they appear non-harmful.

One starts flying close to you and Moth, and suddenly, a laser shot turns it to dust! You look around, and see it was Eyre who fired the shot. "Poisonflies. Nasty things, their bites are hardly noticeable, but their poison is extremely lethal. One bite is enough to kill most creatures within minutes. You and Boss are safe from them of course, but be sure to keep an eye on us "inferior beings", as Boss says." Eyre then turns around and shoots more of them out of the sky.

ENGAGING PROTECTION MODE

You take out your laser gun from your backpack, and start shooting down some of the poisonflies. Your advanced scanning and targeting systems make it so you never miss a shot. Within a few minutes, there's no flies left in the area.

"Damn, nice shooting tin can!" Says Eyre, who gives you a thumbs up. "Your shooting is even more accurate than Boss's. Guess your aiming systems are better."

"They were easy targets, their flight patterns were easily predictable. I doubt my aim will be this perfect against all creatures we encounter." You say as you put your gun away.

"Heh, the robot has some modesty. Boss would still be bragging about shooting them down if he did it." Eyre sits on the ground and relaxes, while the other grunt stands up to act as the lookout.

>Since the threats are gone, I should take the time to hibernate.

EXITING HIBERNATION MODE...

Once again, no dream.

You find that Moth is still sleeping soundly, even though the morning sun is in the sky. Boss is talking with Eyre and the grunt is keeping watch. Boss notices you've woken up and starts waking towards you. "Finally. Wake up the Moth, we're heading inside the lab now." You gently shake the Moth's body, and he starts to stir. He slowly sits up, and grabs his backpack.

"Good morning, thanks for letting me rest." Says Moth. "... And thanks for the headpats..." Moth mutters under his breath. The two of you catch up with the rest of the group inside of the lab. Once you step inside, you see how truly decrepit the place is. Walls and floors have holes in them, and the whole building has a eerie atmosphere to it. Moth starts standing closer to you.

"Alright, nothing of interest in this foyer." Boss turns around and addresses the entire group. "Brother, I'm making you the leader of this investigation. Do you think it would be best if we split up into groups, or if we searched this place together as one large group?"

"It's best if we all stick together."

Boss nods. "Alright. I'll let you take the lead. Which room should we investigate first? Reports from grunts that explored here before says the room to right has a way to get to the second floor, while the room in front of us leads to the basement."

>Analyzing the structure of the building reveals that it's in bad shape, and floors and ceilings could collapse at any moment. Going to the second floor or the basement would each have its own set of dangers...

"It's pretty dark in here, did any of you bring any lights?" Says Eyre.

Boss's eyes light up, and now they act as flashlights! "Hah, don't worry, just stay close to us robots."

ACTIVATING FLASHLIGHT SYSTEMS...
You turn on your own flashlight eyes to help the rest of the group see better.

"I don't need the light" Says Moth. "My eyesight is fine in darkness. Just another way I'm superior to disgusting humans."

"Lets take the path to the second floor first." You point and lead the group into the room on the right, and the group starts searching it. Of note, you find a near-destroyed staircase to the second floor, and a few large unopened crates.

>Scans indicate that the ceiling has over a 90% probability of collapsing if the entire group were to go onto the second floor. At most, it could support the weight of two humans in one spot without breaking. While short, both me and Boss weight about as much as the average adult human. You walk over to the crates and scan them for any signs of traps. Your scans reveal that the crates are safe to open, so you open up one of the crates.

ENGAGING PROTECTION MODE
You overclock your systems and grab your gun, and start doing your best to shoot as many of the insects as you can! However, these poisonflies are flying much more erratically than the ones you've shot down before, making it harder to land shots on them! You stand close to Moth, and focus on shooting any of the ones that get close to him. You only land about half of your shots, but thankfully Boss, Eyre, and the grunt take down the rest.

"You need to practice on your aim, brother!" Says Boss, as he's about to put his gun away. "WAIT! MOTH, DON'T MOVE!"

You turn around, and see that one of the poisonflies landed on Moth's arm! Your scanning systems zoom in on it, and they confirm that the fly just bit Moth!

INITIATING AI OVERCLOCK

You overclock your AI systems, so time seems to move at a crawl.

One got past me! I have to make a decision, and fast! That poison will kill Moth in minutes! The poison is only in his arm right now... I might have to do something drastic...

>I can't cut off his arm, that's too drastic. I'll have to hope one of the humans can suck out the poison fast enough!

You disable your AI overclock, and then quickly shoot the fly off Moth's arm. You then rip off a piece of cloth from your coat, and start tightly wrapping it around Moth's arm!

"H-Hey! That's too tight! I can't feel my arm anymore!"

"That's the point. One of you humans, get over here and suck the poison out! Please!"

Eyre runs over. "I-I know bit about medicine, I'll try!" She grabs Moth's arm and bites down on where the bug bite was!

"OW!" Yelps Moth. Eyre spends a few seconds sucking on Moth's arm, and then she stops and spits onto the floor.

"Pah... I'm... Not sure if I got all of it. Moth, you'll probably feel a little woozy for a while. Try to stay awake, the poison might still be enough to kill you."

Moth starts swaying, as if he's having trouble keeping his balance. "H-Huh...? Oh... Alright..." You remove the tight wrap from his arm.

>Looks like the poison is making him woozy. Hopefully it isn't enough to kill him. I'll have to keep an eye on him to make sure he doesn't pass out, or worse.

Eyre sits down next to him. "He's probably going to be like this for a while. I'll make sure he stays awake and protect him from any threats."

"Thank you, Eyre." You motion for Boss and the grunt to follow you, and you carefully climb up the stairs to the second floor. You can feel the floor creak as you walk on it. "Be careful, and spread out. The floor won't be able to support all of us in one spot."

The grunt nods, while Boss says "Understood, brother." The three of you search the room, and find another stairway that leads to the third floor, and what look like file cabinets. Boss has taken an interest to them and started reading through them.

"Did you find anything interesting, Boss?"

Now I'm just looking to see if there's anything noteworthy on the papers that are still in here. All I've gotten so far is that this lab was run by the United Capitalist Planet States. Most of the papers are too damaged to read, unfortunately."

>All of the important papers were probably taken before this lab was abandoned.

Boss reads through the rest of the papers, then shuts the cabinets. "Damn, nothing. No papers here even stating what this lab was for, most of the papers were just boring legal stuff. No wonder they left them behind. What next, brother? Think there's anything interesting on the third floor?"

"Sounds good to me. Grunt! Stay here, we're going further up." The grunt nods, and Boss leads the way to the third floor. The roof of the third floor has collapsed, so you can see the open sky. Boss walks out first, and when he's about halfway through the room he turns around. "Looks like it's stable enough here. Come on!"

You step out into the room, but the floor lets out a loud crack and you fall through!

"BROTHER!" Boss jumps towards you, points his left arm at you, and fires his hand at you! It coils around your body, and he pulls you back up to the third floor unharmed!

>He's had an extendable arm this entire time?

"Heh, don't scare me like that." Even though he's just a robot, you think you hear his voice crack for a second. "Glad to see I grabbed you before you hit the ground. You are okay, right?"

"Self-diagnosis shows that all systems are perfectly operational. Thank you for the save, Boss."

INITIATING HACKING SYSTEM...

You step back, and attempt to hack the safe's lock. It's difficult, but you just barely disable the safe's locking systems without triggering its self-destruct! The safe's door then opens on its own, revealing its contents.

"Good work, brother! You should've asked me to do it though, my hacking systems are probably more advanced than yours."

You carefully get closer to the opened safe, and start looking inside of it. You find what looks like wads of some sort of currency, and a tiny notebook. You open up the notebook and read:

>SHUTTLE PASSWORD:
>smashthe_USP

"Boss, I think this might be the activation password for a space shuttle!"

"Great! I would come over and look, but that'd probably break the floor. Now we just have to see if that shuttle is still somewhere in this lab!"

You put the currency and the notebook in your bag.

Cautiously moving along the wall of the room, you make your way to the large metal crate.

>Scans indicate that it's just a normal crate. Well, time to open it up.

You rip off the front of the crate, revealing it to be mostly empty on the inside except for a small orange cube.

"Aha! Brother, that's a fuel crystal! It's the fuel most starships use! Doesn't look like much, but it should be enough to get us to a nearby planet!"

>Another step closer to getting off this planet!

As you put the fuel crystal in your bag, a warm feeling of hope fills your emotional systems.

>We're going to do it! We're going to get off this planet! Once we find the shuttle, of course.

You head back down to the first floor with Boss and the grunt, and find Moth stumbling around the room while Eyre watches.

"Oh, you're back." Says Eyre. "I've been keeping an eye on him, thankfully it seems the poison wasn't enough to kill him, but it's making him really delirious."

Moth stumbles towards you. "Hi robot... Why am I here..."

"... It'd probably be best if someone kept watch of him here, or if one of you carried him." Says Eyre. "I take it you're going to explore the path to the basement now?"

Boss puts his hand to his chin in thought. "That looks like our only option. But I've been thinking... We didn't see any corpses on the upper floors, or on the path to this lab. That means that the grunts that didn't come back probably died in the basement..."

>He's right, we didn't see any corpses or remains... What's the basement hiding?

"Lets all go down together, I'll carry Moth." You grab Moth, and have him ride on your back again.

"Huh...? Are we going somewhere..." mutters Moth. You pat his head. "... That's nice..."

The group heads to the room on the first floor that leads to the basement, and finds a staircase down. The group goes down the stairs, into the basement. Your atmospheric sensors detect that there's some sort of smell in the air.

"Eeew, do you smell that?" Says Eyre, as she plugs her nose. "There's clearly something down here. Or something dead."

"The stench... Is awful..." Murmurs Moth.

Suddenly, the ground starts shaking! The floor caves in, and the entire group falls down into the second basement floor!

>Self-diagnosis says I'm fine, but what about Moth?

You slowly get up, and find that Moth is still on your back, and appears unharmed. "That was fun..."

"Ow..." You see Eyre and the grunt get up. "Ah, looks like you guys are alright at least... Wait, where's Boss-"

"I COULD USE SOME HELP HERE!"

You turn around, and see Boss being held by a monstrous beast!

"Wha... What is that thing?!" Eyre steps back in horror!

>Boss! I have to save him from that beast!

>Take out our gun and order the entire group to fire on the beast

INITIATING COMBAT MODE

"Team, focus fire on the beast's maw!" You take out your gun and set it to lethal, and Eyre and the grunt do the same.

"FIRE!" Your laser hits the beast right in its open maw, and the rest of the group's shots land as well! You hear a mix of a gurgle and groan come from the abhorrent monstrosity. Its grip on Boss weakens, and he's able to escape its grasp!

"You'll stand no chance against me now!" A blade suddenly unsheathes from Boss's right arm, and he starts trying to slash it to pieces! He expertly dodges the beast's attacks, but he doesn't notice the beast's other arm heading for his back!

>He's so reckless! If I don't save him, he'll get severely damaged! But I still have Moth on my back...

Moth doesn't seem to comprehend what's going on and is still hanging onto your back while muttering nonsense.

You continue firing at the beast's maw, and transmit a message to Boss, as it's faster than just yelling at him.

>Boss, behind you, look out!

Boss pivots, and blocks the monster's attack with his blade!

"Too predictable-"

But the giant claw wraps around Boss's blade! The monster's other limb lunges at Boss's chest, and impales him!

"... Hah... That's nowhere near enough to take me down!" The piercing limb retracts from Boss's body, and now aims right for his head! You're filled with a sense of dread but also fury!

>NO! BOSS!

You let loose more blasts at the beast, and its piercing limb recoils, but its claw keeps its hold on Boss's blade.

>I have to do something! These laser shots are weakening the creature, but they're not killing it fast enough!

"Aim for the claw!" You and the rest of the group shift their aim to the beast's claw, and after a few rounds of laser blasts the limb turns to ash, and Boss's blade is freed!

"I think we got it on the ropes!" Boss once again starts slashing any part of the beast that gets close to him, and it's goo-like body parts go flying in all directions. The beast's piercing limb attempts another lunge at Boss, but he skillfully dodges the attack and cuts off the limb!

Without any limbs left, the monster suddenly grows taller, and its gaping maw hovers right above Boss!

>It's going to drop itself on top of him and chew him up! The beast is getting desperate, I have to finish it off now or else Boss could get scrapped! But what can I do?! These lasers won't kill it in time!

Suddenly, in the deep reaches of your systems, something unlocks. A hidden system awakens.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86wE0ly_h5U

You activate the All-Out Combat Mode system, and you feel a surge of power go through your body! Your armor plating starts rearranging itself, and your body takes new shape. You feel blades unsheathe from your arms, your chest opens up to reveal a laser canon, boosters on your legs form, and your head makes itself into a more armored helmet-like form.

You have no time to think about your new transformation, however, as a new combat AI overtakes your decision-making systems.

>STARTING UP BLADE SLASHING PROGRAM... ERROR...

You make a lunge for the grunt, but Boss jumps in your way and blocks your slash with his blade.

"Brother... This isn't your emotions, this is something else... Well, as long as you make it fun, give me all you got! Our fated battle is delayed no longer!"

>ERROR... SHUTTING DOWN COMBAT- ERROR, RESTARTING COMBAT SYSTEMS...

You slash at Boss, but your arm isn't working right! Boss deflects the attack easily.

"Oh come on, did that big ol' laser beam tire you out already? COME ON! FIGHT!" Boss aims his blade at your neck, and prepares to stab you!

>Boss... Please... Stop...

"What?" Boss stops, and your combat AI uses this as a chance to try and attack him!

No... SHUTTING DOWN COMBAT SYSTEM... COMBAT SYSTEM SUCCESSFULLY SHUT DOWN.

Your blade stops an inch from Boss's head, and then your body starts changing back to normal. You start to fall over, but Boss catches you. "Oh well, I can wait a LITTLE longer until our fight-Fight...Fight-fi" Boss's eyes lose their glow, and he falls to the ground. You get up and examine the hole in his chest.

>Boss! ...It looks like his main battery was damaged, and the area around it is also damaged. I doubt that just changing the main battery would help, he'll need extensive repairs...

"Are you okay now, robot?" Says Eyre, as she slowly steps closer to you.

"I'm fine, my combat system has been fully disabled." You notice that Moth has gotten up, and no longer looks dazed and confused.

"Wha... What happened?" Moth rubs his head. "My head hurts..."

>It'll take too long to explain everything now, and I don't really have time considering how much battery I have left...

"Hey, look, there's a door that the monster must've blocking!" Eyre points, and you see a metal door. "Think it'll lead us to a shuttle?"

You walk over to Moth and very gently give him a hug. "I'm glad you're alright."

Moth looks a little shocked by sudden show of affection but hugs you back. "Thanks... But uh, I'm still not exactly sure what happened."

"I'll explain later, we don't really have time now. Can you please replace my battery and check Boss's injuries?"

"Alright." Moth grabs the spare battery from your bag, and some tools from his. He cracks open your back panel and quickly replaces your main battery, giving you a full charge. "There, all done!" Says Moth as he closes your back panel.

"Thank you. Now please check Boss."

Moth crouches down over Boss's body and examines the hole in his chest. "It hit right where his battery is, it looks like. Damaged a lot of the wiring, even if I gave him a new battery it wouldn't work. His back-up power probably ran out, he should be fine once we can fix him up though."

"Can you check his chips to make sure they aren't damaged?"

"Alright... He probably won't like me looking though." Moth sits up Boss and opens up back head panel. "... All of his chips and stuff in here are in pretty bad shape, but they've been like that for a while. Still can't do anything about it right now, unfortunately. But it doesn't look like any of it has been damaged recently." Moth shuts Boss's head panel and lays Boss back on the ground.

"Thanks Moth. I assume you can't fix him up now?"

Moth shakes his head. "I'd need better tools and a lot of wires. It'd be best to carry him until we can get some place with some sort of workshop."

"Alright. I'll carry him then." You pick up Boss and carry him on your back.

>Right... Is there anything I want to do before heading off into the room that monster was blocking? I'd like to learn more about that combat system I just activated, but now probably isn't the time.

You walk over to the metal door and try to open it, but it doesn't budge.

>No matter, just need to use a little more force.

You grab the right side of the door, and then pull it back and rip it off its hinges.

"Thanks Robot." Says Eyre as she and the grunt walk past you. You enter the room, which appears to be some sort of large landing pad. Right in the middle of the landing pad is a small space shuttle!

Moth runs right up to it and opens its side door. "It's a little dusty, but it looks operational!"

Eyre looks inside the shuttle. "... I could probably fly this... Wait a minute, this is an official United Capitalist Planet States shuttle."

"Does that mean anything?" Moth asks, while fiddling around with some buttons in the cockpit.

"It means that the moment we turn this thing on, it'll send a signal to all other nearby UCPS spacecrafts showing our location. That includes Intergalactic Police spacecrafts."

>So the moment we start it, we turn into a giant target. Great.

"Could we hack it so it doesn't do that?" asks Moth.

"Not a chance unless you had extremely good hacking technology. The UCPS use the best hacking protection for their official shuttles." Eyre walks away from the shuttle and looks around the room. "First, we have to find a way to open up the ceiling... Aha!" Eyre finds a button on the wall and presses it, and the ceiling opens up to reveal the sky. "Perfect. You ready to start this shuttle, Robot? Want me to fly it, or do you have some flying skills?"

>... I have no flying experience in my databases... But I could always try.

Moth interrupts from the cockpit. "I can fly it too! I know how these shuttles work!"

"I'll let you handle it Eyre."

Eyre cracks a smile for once. "Thanks. I've always wanted to fly one of these."

Moth looks a little sad. "Oh well... I'll just sit in the back then." Moth climbs into the shuttle and sits in one of the back seats. The rest of the group climbs into the shuttle, with you and Eyre in the front seats, and Moth, the grunt, and Boss's deactivated body in the back.

"Oh, I forgot, we need fuel!" Says Eyre.

You take out the fuel cube you got earlier. "Don't worry, we found this on the top floor, along with the password needed to start the shuttle." You hand the fuel cube to Eyre, and type "smashthe_USP" on the shuttle's keyboard console. The shuttle's monitors and consoles glow to life, and one of them show a small starmap of the area.

"Alright Robot, where are we heading? We only got enough fuel to make it to Aphrodisios, or to the USP space station. The space station would have the tools required to fix Boss, but I'm not up to date on current USP and Intergalactic Police relations. If they aren't working directly with the police, they'll likely let us in and help us for free. But if they are working with the police, then we're basically just walking into our jail cells."

"And what about the planet, Aphrodisios?"

Eyre sighs. "As I told you before, it's full of degeneracy and pleasure centers. But if we search hard enough, we'll probably find a place that will fix up Boss. That is if we aren't robbed dry, enslaved, or murdered by the time we find it."

>Either way, both choices are a risk. Right now we need to fix up Boss, but I mustn't forget my goal of finding a way to get a real, non-robotic body.

"Set course for the USP Space Station."

Eyre nods, and starts fiddling with the buttons in the cockpit. "Alright... Time for takeoff!" Eyre hits a button, and the shuttle starts to rumble, and slowly rise above the ground. Once your out of the hole in the ground, Eyre pushes a lever forward, and the shuttle blasts through the planet's atmosphere and into space!

"Man, this shuttle's way more smooth than the old rust buckets I used to ride on." Eyre says as she leans back in her chair. "I've set the course, now we just have to wait a while. Should take us about 30 minutes to get to the space station."

For around 5 minutes, the entire group just takes the time to sit back and relax, until a warning appears on one of the consoles.

WARNING, INCOMING SHIP CHARGING UP WEAPON SYSTEMS.

The radar shows a ship approaching from behind! A message starts playing over the shuttle's speakers.

"This is the Intergalactic Police. Stop your shuttle immediately or we will use force."

>That's the same voice as the girl who was talking to Zabot in the bar!

"Shit! Robot, what are your orders? This thing doesn't have any weapons on it so we can't fight back, we can only surrender or run!" Eyre fanatically starts messing with the shuttle's controls. "I've given us some shields, so we'll withstand a few blasts, but if they go down it'll only take one good shot to turn us into spacedust!"

"Wait, look!" Moth points to the radar. "There's another ship ahead! What is it?"

Eyre taps on the radar to get more information on the unknown ship. "It's... A USP research vessel! It's big enough for us to dock in, but they also have weapons systems... If they don't let us dock, they'll probably destroy us within seconds. But, they might just let us on if we ask for asylum!"

>I have to make my choices carefully here. A mistake now means that everyone in this shuttle could get blown up and killed.

"Head for the USP research vessel and attempt to message them asking for asylum!"

"I hope you've made the right choice. Changing course and opening hailing frequencies!" The shuttle's course changes and you see a large spaceship come into view.

You hear another message over the speakers. "We DEMAND that you stop your shuttle immediately, or else you WILL be shot down!"

You ignore the message. Suddenly, the research vessel's course changes, and the front of the ship is now facing yours!

WARNING, INCOMING SHIP CHARGING UP WEAPON SYSTEMS.

"No! They're about to fire on us as well! Quick Robot, we're close enough to send them a message!" Eyre is frantically wrestling with the shuttle controls trying to dodge the shots being fired from the Intergalactic Police ship.

"USP research vessel, please hold your fire! We have no weapon systems and mean no harm, we only seek asylum upon your ship."

For a moment there's no response, but then you see a image appear on the shuttle's viewscreen. You see a tall, middle-aged man with a scar on his face. "...We're holding our fire. We were told you were nothing but a shuttle of a few rogue robots, is that not the case?"

"Quick, let me turn on our camera so they can see us!" Eyre hits a button.

"What the- I only count one robot there, get those UCPS officers back on the line, and tell them to hold their fire!" The captain does a hand motion at someone off-screen, and you hear the female Intergalactic Police officer again.

"Sir, I assure you that that shuttle carries nothing but-"

"Well I can see with my own damn eyes this shuttle carries more than robots! You were trying to get me to do your dirty work for you! Get out of this sector before I consider telling some higher ups about this incident."

"... As you wish, sir. But remember the laws around here, you must destroy that-"

"Are you daft? Of course I know the laws here. Now leave!"

The Intergalactic Police shuttle turns around and flies off, and eventually your radar can't pick up its location anymore.

"Damn pigs..." You hear the captain mutter under his breath. "Anyway, I apologize for my lack of introduction. I am Mikhail Chernenko, captain of the USP Sophia. I heard you ask for asylum, for what reason?"

"Moth and my robotic friend Boss have been falsely accused of crimes by the Intergalactic Police."

"Moth... You mean the same Moth that the UCPS said blew up one of their space stations years ago?"

Moth sits up and nods. "Yes, but it is a false accusation! We have a robot that needs repairs, can you please let us on and fix him up?"

Mikhail shakes his head. "Afraid not. All robots must be scrapped, as is the law." Mikhail looks at someone off-screen. "Prepare to teleport the non-robots aboard, and ready the weapons to fire upon the shuttle to destroy the robots."

>No! I... I don't want to die!

Before you can say anything, Moth interrupts. "These aren't just simple robots, they have emotions and true thought! I refuse to be taken aboard if you can't bring the robots as well! Half of my brain is cybernetic, yet I'm considered non-robotic by your standards. Just because they aren't organic doesn't mean they shouldn't be treated like people! It's wrong for you to senselessly destroy these robots without even hearing them out or learning about them first! Killing them would be no better than killing anyone on this shuttle!"

>Moth... He truly does care about me.

Mikhail closes his eyes in thought. "... Teleport the robots to a holding cell, and open up the docking bay so the shuttle can dock."

You feel a sense of relief. "Thank you, Moth." You feel some sort of aura envelop your body and scramble your sensors, and when they're back online you find yourself in what looks like a holding cell. You notice Boss's deactivated body laying in the corner.

>Best to just wait.

You attempt to stave off your boredom by humming, but as you have no songs in your databases or any knowledge on music theory, your "humming" sounds more like random beeps and bloops. You stop your attempt at music once you hear someone walking down the hall to your cell.

"Ah, sorry for keeping you waiting." It's Captain Mikhail. He does a polite bow before you. "While I am still considering whether or not I should treat you as a living being, it would be rude of me to not treat you with respect until I have come to a final decision. I hope me taking precautions and teleporting you directly into a holding cell doesn't offend you, I only wish to keep my crew as safe as possible."

>He's being much more formal with me than he was with the Intergalactic Police... I can assume this isn't the first time he's had a dispute with them. Maybe I can use that to my advantage.

"I had a short chat with the other people you were with. That Moth kept begging me to treat you like a person and to not scrap you. While the two humans were just concerned about getting something to eat and a place to sleep. I assume from how haggard your group looked that you've been through hell, so they've all been given their own private quarters to relax. Since you're a robot, you have no need for rest, so I'm sure you'll be fine with having a chat. >If I want him to treat me like a living creature, I have to try and sound human.

"To my knowledge, which I readily admit isn't that much, I've never been in space, or anywhere off-planet. Um sorry, I'm rambling, well I guess I would like to formally introduce myself and my brother to you." Unfortunately, your monotone robotic voice and lack of human-like random pauses between words just makes your words come out as extremely awkward.

Mikhail crosses his arms. "... Never heard a robot speak like that before. I must say I much prefer when most robots got right to the point."

>Maybe pretending to be something I'm not wasn't a good idea...

"I don't have any long term memories and I would like to know why it's the law to scrap robots."

"Well, a couple years back, robots very similar to you were mass-produced. They were given the most advanced AI systems possible, however, due to lack of testing and regulation, most of the robots would malfunction, and they were known to go completely haywire. Not only that, they were very prone to hacking, which only lead to more problems. As such, both the UCPS and the USP came together to try and destroy all of the robots and ban the creation of any new sentient robots." Mikhail starts mumbling under his breath. "... Even though it was the UCPS's fault that those malfunctioning robots were made in the first place..." Mikhail stops his muttering "Anyway, do you have any more questions, or are you ready to answer some of mine?"

"You answered my questions, so it's only fair that I answer yours."

Mikhail nods. "Perfect. You and your group have all been accused of a number of different crimes. The Moth is accused of being the one who blew up a UCPS Space Station that got over a hundred people killed. He's also been accused of being a gang member that's helped destroy a village and kill even more people. Your "brother" is accused of being the leader of said gang. Do you understand the charges so far?"

"Loud and clear."

"Good. The two humans aboard your shuttle are also accused of working for said gang. And finally, you've been accused of working with the gang, and murdering a female village guard."

>Wait, how does he know about that?!

You think you see a spark in Mikhail's eyes, as if he somehow knows his last statement shocked you. "Do you deny the crimes you've been accused of?"

>If I deny the crimes and he figures out I was lying, he probably won't want to help me... But can I really just confess? Wait, what am I thinking? It wasn't murder, it was self-defense!
You keep your emotions in check and prepare yourself for your answer.

It...happened when I went to try and talk her down from doing something that was going to get her hurt or killed. I went to restrain her with a hug pinning her arms in place, she had already attacked me and I just wanted to get her to calm down, to talk it out with me... what happened was a tragedy, and I will live with the guilt of what happened to the day my spark finally gives out and I die. You take a seat on the cell's bench. "It wasn't murder, it was self-defense. Dumm was troubled, but despite that she was still a good person and someone I considered a friend. It happened when I tried to talk her down from doing something that was going to get her killed. I attempted to restrain her, and I just tried to knock her out, but I misjudged my strength. What happened there was a tragedy, and I live with the guilt of what happened till the day my spark finally gives out."

Mikhail stares at you. "A rather well-spoken and well-prepared sounding defense. A shame you can't claim self-defense because you're a robot, and under no circumstances are robots allowed to hurt humans. You basically just admitted you're malfunctioning and rogue."

>I forgot about my missing laws and directives! I'm a robot, I'm supposed to have laws that prevent me from hurting people, I think. And I just admitted that I have no laws!

You feel an overwhelming sense of fear. "Does this mean... I'm going to be scrapped now?"

Mikhail chuckles. "Yes... Or rather, you would if the UCPS were going to press charges against you. You're a lucky bastard, if they recognize that you killed someone back on that junkyard planet, that'd mean they were officially recognizing that planet as a real planet, and that would stop corporations from being able to legally dump all of their trash there. Of course, with the UCPS being capitalists, corporate lobbyists have all of the power. As for me and the USP, I'm fine with just marking your crimes as something that was necessary for survival back on that planet."

Your sense of fear fades, and is replaced with relief and gratitude. "Thank you."

"Don't thank me yet. You're still a robot, and that means under law you have to be scrapped. And your Moth friend isn't so lucky, as his crimes were committed on UCPS territory... Or rather, his crimes destroyed it. The UCPS wants us to bring him into trial soon, along with bringing in both of you robots so you can be scrapped. But, as I'm a USP diplomat who specializes in easing relations and solving disputes between races and factions, I'm both willing to hear you out, and to help defend you in your case."

>He's... Willing to help defend me?

"Why do you wish to help me?"

"As I said, I'm a diplomat. My goal is to strive for peace whenever possible. If you want to prove that robots are a new form of race that deserve rights, then you have my complete backing. Now, do you want me to help you in court, or do you wish to defend yourself alone?"

>"I would happily accept your help."
>"I'd like more time to think on it. I want to meet up with the rest of my group and fix up Boss."
>"I appreciate the offer, but I don't need your help."

You go into your databases and review the last few minutes of the conversation to attempt to determine if Mikhail is being truthful.

>There's no signs that he was lying, scans show it is likely he was truthful the entire time.

"Can you also defend Moth?"

Mikhail sighs. "Before I became a diplomat, I used to be a lawyer. I've successfully defended people in court before, but I doubt I'll be able to prove him innocent. From what I've seen of the evidence, the case against him is strong. But if you think I'll help, I won't turn down the offer to be his lawyer."

>So Moth's case might be a lost cause, then. He did commit the crime, after all.

"I'd like more time to think about my case before I make a decision. I also want to meet up with the rest of my group and have Boss get fixed up."

Mikhail closes his eyes in thought for a moment. "... I guess there's no harm in letting you leave your cell. However, when Boss is repaired, he will be kept in a cell for the safety of the crew. As much as I want to trust you robots, I don't want to risk any of my crew members coming to any harm from you robots going rogue. Understood?"

"Yes."

"Alright then, I'll escort you to Moth's room. The two humans are asleep right now." Mikhail presses some buttons on the wall, and the cell bars retract into the ground. He motions for you to follow him, and you leave Boss's body behind in the cell. After a short walk, Mikhail opens up a door and you find Moth in a small bedroom, looking out the window. "If you need anything, use the ship's intercom." Mikhail leaves the room and the door automatically closes behind him.

"Oh, they haven't scrapped you yet!" Moth runs up and gives you a hug. "I was worried they'd still scrap you. I'm glad you're still alright." You notice a tone of sadness in Moth's voice. "... It looks like I'm going to be going to trial soon... And I'll probably be found guilty. Robot, I don't know what to do. Part of me just wants to keep running from the law, while another is just tired of all the running..."

>For a crime as awful as the one Moth has committed, he'll probably get life in prison or the death penalty if found guilty.

Moth hugs you tighter. "What should I do, Robot?"

>"Don't worry, I'll help defend you and get you acquitted."
>"It's time to stop running. You should just confess, maybe you can get a plea bargain."

"Don't worry, I'll help you and get you acquitted."

Moth holds onto you even tighter, and you feel tears landing on your chest. "Y-You must be m-malfunctioning. *sniff* Your AIs should be t-telling you that we have a zero percent chance of w-winning this case..."

>... Well, he's right there.

"But... T-Thank you anyway..." Moth just keeps you in his embrace silently for a few minutes before he speaks up again. "Robot... If we lose, then I want you to do something for me."

"What is it?"

Moth breaks from the hug, wipes away his tears, and stares at you directly in the eyes. "If we lose, I want you to hack into my brainchip, delete all of my memories, and take complete control of me. You might be able to convince the court to let you take over my body. It would be a waste for my body to rot inside a cell for life when I know I'm one of your only ways for you to achieve true freedom, Robot."

"It won't come to that Moth, I promise."

Moth closes his eyes, and walks back to the window. "Y-You shouldn't make promises you can't keep, R-Robot..."

You walk over to him and put your arm around his shoulders, and stare out into space. It's a black sea of stars as far as your visual sensors can see. The shear size of space makes you feel so insignificant, but it also gives you a odd feeling of comfort.

Moth leans his head on your shoulder. "If we somehow do win... I'd like to search the stars with you so you can find the true freedom you want."

You've been so focused on other things that you haven't had the time to think about how you're going to get yourself a non-robotic body. You worry that your emotions might one day take control of you again, but then you reassure yourself that as long as you have friends like Moth and Boss around, you'll be fine.

Well it's lucky Boss was out of commission, he wouldn't enjoy being in a cell and conscious waiting a long time for slow human legal systems to help.

>4341363
> enough fuel to make it to Aphrodisios, or to the USP space station. The space station would have the tools required to fix Boss,

> Aphrodisios?"
>Eyre sighs. "As I told you before, it's full of degeneracy and pleasure centers.

One destination had the way to fix brother boss's current body,

the other destination probably has organic cloned human bodies grown in vats with computers in their skulls as programmable puppets, to complete our Pinocchio quest there.

Meanwhile, in the legal procedural, Moth only has no hope because he thinks the trial has to be a fair trial.

But Boss has great hacking hardware, and who's to say we can't doctor the evidence to exonerate mothboy and frame someone else.

Or fake his death for a second time and go on the lam if that fails.

Also...

>No, it couldn't have been. It was just a glitch caused by my emotional systems, nothing more.

Robot could make chitchat sometime and ask about human belief in existence after expiration, saying that he overheard a superstitious villager illogically insisting to the others that he'd seen a ghost. Is this belief common?

Just to reassure himself that there's no scientific basis to this sort of thing, and that it can only have been emotions creating hallucinations. There's no such thing as space ghosts. Everyone knows that.

If fighting for robot rights, and extending robo-brotherhood to all hypothetical other robots out there, it might not be good optics to keep calling one robot Boss and the other Robot.

They'll need actual names. And Boss sounds awesome but too villainous.

They'd need to shift to being named something like BB-1 and BR-0 (Brother Boss and Brother Robot) or something. Or discover their original manufacturer's identifiers. Gotta wonder how many years they were on the junkyard planet before waking up.

"Moth" works just fine as a name though. People aren't mass producing moths in large numbers so it's not like naming a guy "Human." Unlike robots he's probably the first and last of his kind.

Speaking of robot solidarity, though...

...Moth seems to have left behind that dead scrapped robot in pieces back in his hideyhole. And all his blueprints. And we the players forgot to ever examine that dead red robot, or even slightly scan it, back in >>4278524. He probably had an elaborate tragic backstory in his memory banks or something. Sad!
