This is an ASOIAF quest. I feel like rolling an ironborn house will be fun, so get ready for full on contact reaving! We’ll be playing right before Robert’s Rebellion.

I’ll be running a session this weekend to get character and house generation finished.

First we make our House Resources. Our lands lie on the Iron Islands, to the west of the riverlands and northwest of the westerlands. Roll 7d6 seven times for our starting numbers. Once we get enough rolls, I’ll apply the modifiers.

The founding of the house began when the founder was a mere recruit of a minor Reaver-lord. The "Recruit" as the house only knows since written records were never prevalent in Ironborn society was one of skullduggery in skills, often acting as a scout and ad-hoc assassin for his lord. It was too a point where the Recruit took advantage of this influence and betrayed his lord in a counter assassination job by a rival lord, killing him in cold blood while he was asleep.

The Recruit had thought his penultimate ways of stealth ensured that he wasn't seen- but the next day after the entire crew had knew what he had done! What happened next was that The Recruit had to fight off and kill his entire crew by himself with one a dagger and a fork, a crew of 100- heavily armed. By some fortune of the Drowned Gods themselves The Recruit had one this battle that went on for 1 day and a half.

Heavily injured and near to death, The Recruit retreated, not having a chance to kill the various thralls and staff-hands of the ship. This had caused his story to spread like wildfire. Many other Ironborn were impressed by his sheer skill of combat, especially with the meagre weapons he had at his disposal. Others loathed and rated him a cowardly fool.

However the matter this prestige was enough for some men to come unto his influence, beginning his own house all by accident as it accumulated. This house is perceived as snake-like schemers for this long, long even centuries ago.

Small Castle it is, by a landslide. That'll get us a handy +6 to our military units defending our castle.

Now onto Influence. It tells us our Head of House's max Status ranking, as well as how well known we are.

The status of our House is 3. Even other ironborn may not be familiar with our family. But this leaves us free to put exp into other aspects of our character.

Now we move onto Lands. Table 6-6 and 6-7 of the picture are what we buy Land with. We choose 1 Terrain type, and add on as many Features as we like. The middle table shows what is common to each Realm.

The Iron Islands typically have Hills and Plains for Terrain.

The main question here is, do we want to have our own island? This doesn't necessarily mean we're struck out in the middle of the ocean--we can very easily be just off the coast of another isle.

The cheapest island we can get is one with Plains (Island) that costs 15 Land. That'd be most of our Land, but we can upgrade it with Hills (to buy Mines later) and a Coast (to get a Port).

So the question is: To island or not to island?

If we do go with an island, I've no qualms with making up our own island. In the past when I've done house gen, I find islands are one of the easier domains to make since all you gotta do is stick it on water. Don't have to worry about stepping on other House's toes.

Honestly the whole port/marketplace thing, while a ubiquitous goal in these quests, just feels kind of boring for ironborn. There are supposed to be 31 islands in total with only the 7 largest shown on the map. There's no reason we can't have our own. I'm not sure if we are purchasing "island" for each domain or just once.

If we need to purchase for each domain, then:

>The name of Archport, the main settlement on our island, is a bit of a misnomer. Named after the natural rock arch that reaches from our main island to the small islet our castle sits upon, Archport is a large fishing at best. The inhabitants number 20 or so families. The arch itself houses a few families that directly work with the noble house. A small lighthouse stands above the village.


Next up we have Law and Population. These simply affect our House Fortune Rolls during play, pic related.

Our Population is decent, with the number being typical and spread out. Our Law poses some problems, with banditry and general lawlessness along the fringes.

But our next decision comes in Power Holdings, aka military units. We'll probably need a Garrison and Warships, but beyond that I'm open to suggestions. Archers would be nice, and Raiders would fit nicely. I'll put up the Power Holding pic next.

Warship units can only transport 1 land unit each, so I added a second and made the raider unit into something more fighty. Raider alone lacks Athletics which is used for damage. I added Criminal on with the last point for the Stealth option and the flavor of it.

Garrison can protect our holdings when we’re off raiding. Two units of warships to deliver our personal guard and scouts into battle. Elite personal guard will scythe through opposition far more effectively than any unit raiders. Trained scouts or archer provide some ranged firepower - I’d probably go with the scouts, both have the long-ranged keyword but I think the scouts stealth training would be more useful for a raiding force.

Criminals are a terrible unit. Combined units add their Discipline modifiers together so, yeah, that 1 point of power gives your unit Stealth but it also makes your Veteran Infantry/Criminals as poorly disciplined as Green Infantry.
A better option is Infantry/Scouts. It costs an extra 1 power but only worsens your discipline by +3 and gives you Stealth, Awareness and Long-Ranged.

A commander with a decent warfare rank solves that easily enough. I was trying to avoid stacking up too many useless/noncomplimentary keywords. Also just not a fan of giving bows to melee units.

I’ve also always wanted to play an ASOIAF qst with the Minstrel’s Seat holding. It’s extremely useful if you’ve got a couple of other holdings boosting your Wealth, and I like the idea of some Drowned God true believer skald roaring his songs from the bow of our boats as we charge into battle.

We can buy mines later ... it just takes 24+2d6 months to build them. Fisheries are 2d6 (plus 1d6 or 2d6 for processing or whaling respectively).
That’s why I reckon we should go for Mines before Fisheries (not to mention Mines tucked away on our island are safer from raiders and the benefits are frankly better than Fisheries).

Master of Arms is 12+1d6 months to hire later but I think that would be a mistake because the Master of Arms improvement in post-battle injury rolls is absolutely worth more than the resource bonus from fisheries.

Since we took whaling, this might be relevant. Make it a rite of passage for the men of the house to slay a "leviathan." There's also the whole kraken vs leviathan rivalry. Alternatively, Volmark has a leviathan theme, so a CoA depicting hunting one could be a jab at them. Then there's the lore of the leviathans themselves being in places like the waters north of the Iron Islands by Wildling territory and also way out in the Shivering Sea if anyone ever ends up being for a little adventure.

So I saw you mentioned dual axes. I've never gotten around to using this on /qst/ due to my fighterlet characters, but I had this Benefit worked up for a dual wielder. It plugs the gap in the rules that otherwise forces you to use a little cuck axe/dagger in your OH if you want to see any benefit to dual wielding.

It's just the Double Shot rules with the Weapon Savant requirements, nothing fancy. It would be downright nasty with Berserker, but obviously those agi/cunning requirements are a pretty steep counterbalance on an athletics fighter. Just figured I'd drop it here in case you're interested.

Yeah being an ironborn woman is gonna be hard, much like what Asha has to go through, despite being an experienced leader. At the same time, I think there's a measure of respect when a woman chooses the reaver life. They don't get laughed at for wearing armor, like Brienne of Tarth gets. I think ironborn warrior women will get more bad talk from greenlanders or other ironborn who don't know them as well. And even then, they'll have a lot of hang ups going on inside their head.

I won’t be able to stay for the nittygritty exp spending but I strongly vote that we invest in high persuasion and the Magnetic benefit (and whatever the admittedly subpar prerequisite benefit). Magnetic is really good and personally I think we’ll need something like that to make up for the fact we’re a woman. If we’re not willing to go for Magnetic then Attractive is a better alternative than just Charismatic (Magnetic is the better option though).
Also along the lines of compensating for our disadvantaged gender, the Cohort benefit that gives us a loyal bodyguard would be extremely beneficial if we’re anything less than stellar in melee - maybe a slave we’ve picked up or a trusted cousin.

How's this? That's 230 exp assuming 1 stat dropped to 1. I figured she doesn't know the first thing about hunting/tracking/foraging due to ship life. I went with low fighting and athletics because she's still a fairly young girl. Flipped deception and persuasion. Maybe she uses Act to pretend to be sweeter than she is around her dad. I raised thievery/stealth slightly to keep up the little guttersnipe bend.

As far as combat... this is where it was tricky. I went with marksmanship here, but I could see it getting flipped with fighting if people want to try out the Braavosi fighting stuff. That feels a little weird for Ironborn though. It's not like she couldn't have stumbled upon it fighting pirates or something, but something abouy the... flowiness? of it all feels odd for such a blunt culture. I was thinking a pair of light crossbows (they're 1 -handed) with Deft Hands to make them easy to reload. She may be a small girl, but a bolt to the face is a great equalizer. Too much of a gimick/meme? Just right?

I guess you could maybe shift something around and bring her up to 3 in athletics, but going past that or putting bonus dice in strength turns it into eyeroll territory when we're talking about a teenage girl with a rogue bend. I think Victara, and just about any ironborn noble of her age, is wanting to prove their worth to their peers and their family. Which is a fine starting point.

QM I think you should make a two handed battleaxe as our main weapon. Handaxe is for throwing and finger dancing only. A battleaxe wielded with both hand gives 4 damage.

Fair. I disagree but I can see where you're coming from.
That being the case, I think it's even more important our cohort (whether we go for the knight or the sellsword) has warfare 3 or 4. And before anyone says 4 is too high - the Field Master upgrade for Master of Arms only costs 5 wealth and that gives a Warfare 4 subcommander+cheaper soldiers so it can't be too rare.

Another suggestion - maybe a bit left field but worth considering imo

Various types of short spear-type weapons have maritime associations since literally forever. You've got Neptune's trident, early pirates with their sharpened boat hooks (pic related), Age of Sail sailors with their boarding pikes, even the Navy SEALs.

They're both Athletic-based weapons. The main reason I'm suggesting a Frog Spear is that it's the sort of light, Agility-based weapon our character would naturally be better suited to.
The other option would be a stiletto and a dagger or dirk in the off-hand. Both agility based and the stiletto would be perfect for someone who knows they don't have the upper body strength to get through even leather armour without a bit of luck.

Votes are in!

Our mother, Lady Lia, hails from House Serry of Southshield in the Reach. An island that defends the Mander River from ironborn, the union was made for defense as well as trade for both houses involved.

Our cohort bodyguard, Yann Tissar, hails from Tyrosh and is a friend of House Serry. When the Lord Serry sent off his daughter to marry Lord Osric, he offered his mercenary friend to protect Lia and all her children, for a fee of course. Yann accepted, and has become Victara's bodyguard at Lia's behest. Yann butts heads with Lord Osric from time to time, but Osric tolerates him for protecting his firstborn.

As far as Victara's stats are concerned, I've taken the Language ability down to 2 and upped our Warfare to 3. Between learning to read and learning warfare, even a compromising lord like Osric knows which one is more dire.

For combat, I'll change us to a frog spear, with 2B in Spears instead of 2B in Axes. This will make us a bit of a stronger start, and without min-maxing just for the sake of it. New stats below.
