Death. The nebulous phenomena that has enraptured mankind since its waking self-awareness. It is a mysterious threshold that no one can fully comprehend, unless directly experienced- to that point the one who has is now perished.

In this year, 1914, begins the Great War. The war that will ravage for the first time- the entire globe on all fronts. Among the world the various European powers have found themselves embroiled in a web that has proverbially snapped with the assassination of Arch-Duke Franz Ferdinand. Mobilization has begun. Natives of many colonial territories fight in wars they have no dime in, but must as per their overlords decree. New innovations ensure the field of battle takes as much casualties as ever could've imagined by any stretch of the margin. Beyond that further along the years many more will die from a strange affliction that certainly engulf millions. This year is the one we specifically one among the millions ravaged by this era.

Henry had optimism when he was drafted into the service of Great Britain. He was inundated with the scores of tall tales from the recruitment officers in London telling him how pertinent it was that he serve King and country! The hunic menace in the form of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottomans had to be stopped! Henry would've been a hero!

The reality however? War was absolute hell. The sounds never stopped, the incessant ricochets of calibre impacts on the soil or even the flesh of his own fellow soldiers. Smells of high asphalt always were burned into his sense of smell with the charred sidewalks he chambered across. Many fellow recruits he knew of, who while only knowing them in passing, having them die weigh on him. His particular platoon survived the horrors of the battles of Mon, Le Cateau, and Marne. It was only in Aisne did everything go horribly tits up.

The Germans had a high platitude of control, of which his corporal Damien Cole ordered to sneak around a ridge in an attempt to harass their rear. He was confident in this due to the fog that veiled the enemy field of view. It was going swimmingly until dawn had broken in, allowing the fog to clear and let the platoon to be seen. By the time Henry had returned fire to kill a few Germans himself, he along with a row of his fellow soldiers were mowed down by an MG 08 barrage.

Henry's life flashed before his very eyes as he felt death came knockin' on his door, his bullet riddled body drawing in last breaths.
-------------------

What was Henry Alan the most adept at the most? What was he middling in? And what was he the least gifted at?

Primary- will allow 7 points to be put into a given attribute rack
Secondary- will allow 5 points to be put into a given attribute rack
Tertiary- will allow only 3 points to be put into a given attribute rack

The attributes are:

Physical: Which governs- Strength, Dexterity, Stamina
Social: Which governs- Charisma, Manipulation, Appearance
Mental: Which governs- Perception, Intelligence, Wits

Strength o|Dexterity o|Stamina o

Charisma o|Manipulation o|Appearance o

Perception o|Intelligence o|Wits o

Each attribute already starts off with a point- representing the absolute minimum a human would atleast have in a given attribute.
>>
>>4291218
Strength 2|Dexterity 2|Stamina 1|

Charisma 1|Manipulation 1|Appearance 1|(you are obviously going to look and be pretty ragged serving in the First World War)

Physical: Which governs- Strength, Dexterity, Stamina
>Tertiary
Social: Which governs- Charisma, Manipulation, Appearance
>Primary
Mental: Which governs- Perception, Intelligence, Wits

For Mental you've seemed to use "Secondary" for it since I count you put 5 into points into that rack, but for Physical you only put two whole points and for Social you put in nothing. I don't know which Primary or Tertiary you want.

>>4291245
This one is good on which should be which, but you forgot to assign which points should go where specifically.
>>
>>4291218
Secondary
Physical: +2 Strength, +2 Dexterity, +1 Stamina

Tertiary
Social: +3 Appearance

Primary
Mental: +2 Perception, +3 Intelligence, +2 Wits

So

Strength 3|Dexterity 3|Stamina 2
Charisma 1|Manipulation 1|Appearance 4
Perception 3|Intelligence 4|Wits 3

So a autist when it comes to talking, a strong and fast boi, with a strong mind under his handsome face.

>Attributes Confirmed

Henry before being drafted and getting all but training for a year to hone his build for war, was more of the bookish type of lad. He was decidedly middle-class with his father, Ollie Alan being an economics professor at the newly opened University of Bristol- of which Henry and his family lived in the city of Bristol.

He was opening to gain some sort of position through his fathers connections, but as we already know.. other things we in store for Henry..
-------------------

Now we are on Abilities- the particular things Henry was or had experienced in during his time of life.

Abilities come in three categories just as Attributes

Talents

Skills

and Knowledges

Just as before we must choose which portion of adeptness Henry has in these three categories. This time the number of points that can be distributed is little more due to the sheer number of Abilities Henry can be skilled in.

Primary is the 13 allotment
Secondary is the 9 allotment
Tertiary is the 5 allotment

Can you explain which group of abilities is mental, social and physical?
>>
>>4291326

Ability categories are mostly agnostic away from the Attributes themselves. Attributes represent an entity as a whole, while Abilities are rough assemblage of certain skills with some overlap in how they may act out.

If a transliteration is needed still, I'd say Talents would represent more physical things, while Knowledge would obviously be mental derived. Social could go either for matching it up with the broad Ability categories.

(Henry Alan was just a normal human. He wouldn't be able to have a 8 in Firearms, that would take centuries.)
-------------------

Most of what Henry knows was any average British teen stuff he would scrounge up over the years. After his draft however and training at London, he'd gained the knowledge of extensive use of firearms. Henry unlike most others was very eager for the prospect of serving his country (of course being subdued from the waves of propaganda he'd receive during his training at camp). His hone with the Lee-Enfield was unmatched among his squadron. The other skills that would seem unorthodox for a British teen were things he picked up on his own hobbies, such as driving, repair, and medicine.
-------------------
Northern France, Wilderness- 9/20/1914[/b[

Finally as if a proverbial bell had rung somewhere in the depths of Henry's fleeting mind, he finally succumbed to the plethora of bullets that riddle his body. He had died.

Something happened however. Everything was all black. Where was he? What is this? It was at that moment The young British private felt both a wave of pure metaphysical emotions and an inconspicuous anchoring of some sort. He didn't understand what in the world was happening!
-------------------

As of now Henry Alan has passed on during the First Battle of the Aisne. He currently is in a Caul- the cocoon the entangles the newly minted dead who for whatever reason- cannot pass into the next life, trapping them until they are "collected" by other passerbys in the similar predicament of undeath.

Here we must decide what keeps Henry Alan from not passing on. This is done in a form of concept called a Fetter. A Fetter can be an entity (person, animal, etc.), object, certain general area, or a particular building/place. The points allowed for a Fetter are 10. Henry can have multiple Fetters, with each one having a higher number depending on the value of weight it is to him that specifically keeps him as a ghost. No Fetter can have more than 5 points allotted at a time, 5 is the cap.

>What Fetters keep Henry Alan as a Ghost?
-------------------

To further explain, here is an example of a theoretical ghost- Toby Flenderson from The Office after he has died. This example may get your creative juices flowing after understanding the concept:

Toby Flenderson's Fetters| Fetters: DunderMifflin Scranton Branch (4), Toby's Cubicle (3), Death Chair (2), Sasha's Stuffed Bear (2)
>>
>>4291392
A need to understand 5
For King and Country 3
An unrequited love 2
>>
>>4291416

The first two Fetters are just concepts, not tangible things that can link Henry to the world still.

The third one you put can definitely work however- maybe its a girl Henry fell in love with at first sight while patrolling a designated city while his battalion waited for further advancement orders? Or a girl back in Bristol who he never admitted his feelings to before being drafted. Just who is this unrequited love of Henry?

So the third Fetter is fine, but other options need to be of for the other 8 points left.
>>
>>4291420
Guns 3
>>
>>4291421

By Guns, what do you specifically mean? Do you mean Henry's Lee-Enfield that he used extensively before his death? If that is the case it is acceptable. That leaves 5 points left for any other potential Fetters.
>>
>>4291427
Don't have any idea on the last fetter but I vote it uses our last 5

>>4291481
Oh or
A stained uniform 5
>>
>>4291481

Yes certainly... even as Henry was trapped in the pitch blackness of wherever he was, he could feel strange tangs of anchorage. Weights that still keep him from fully "passing", whatever that could possibly mean. Henry knew as much that he had to be dead- taking full on mounted machine gunfire.. but it was as if that as soon as he died, these unknown feelings of intense regret clambered to him to keep him still.. "Present."

However even with all this Henry was still trapped in some sort darkness he couldn't understand. Was it a purgatory of some make? Or was this outright hell with him being in a Abyss?
-------------------

Henry is unaware of this yet himself, but every new soul that crosses into this new perpetuity gain special abilities. Some don't however, but Henry founds himself as one of the ones who do. These abilities are called "Arcanoi". There are 5 points that can be spent into which Arcanoi the dead Private will begin with. As such Arcanoi are capped at 5 as proficiencies above that must be learned from oneself or from another source.

Argos: Argos is the Arcanoi that allows the Wraith wielding it to fly

Castigate: Those with knowledge of this Arcanos learn what drives and feeds an entity called a Shadow, the mirror separate entity that exists within all souls of the dead, as a prelude to learning what weakens its grip.

Embody: The Arcanoi that allows the physical manifestation of a Wraith past the Shadowlands (the near plane where that rests on the Skinlands) into the Skinlands (where the living reside).

Fatalism: The ability to read the tapestry of Fate itself, to the extent of interpeting the past and future. It is sometimes a dangerous, but rewarding Arcanoi.

Inhabit: The Arcanoi that allows the Wraith to control inanimate objects with infusion of their very essence into it. If an object is destroyed while a wraith occupies it, the item immediately becomes what is known as a "relic", a former object in that Skinlands that has now passed into the Shadowlands due to being destroyed.

Keening: Keening is the Arcanos of emotion transmitted by sound. Those who know this art can sing emotion into their listeners, living or dead.

Lifeweb: Lifeweb is the Arcanoic study of the ties between wraiths and the living world. A master of this Arcanoi can sense and manipulate the bonds of the Fetters, handling their energy as a weaver manipulates her shuttle and loom.

Moliate: The soulstuff of wraiths, called plasm, is a far more malleable substance than flesh. Moliate, sometimes called soulshaping, is the power of sculpting and rearranging that plasm.

Outrage: There are several ways to affect the living world from the Shadowlands. Outrage is the Arcanos that manifests a wraith’s strength of will as kinetic force. Its arts are all physical or violent in some form or another, as are its practitioners.
(cont'd)
>>
>>4291495

Pandemonium: Pandemonium is the ability to tap into the vistages of chaos itself, manifesting the strange and wholly eldritch upon the living world. Sudden mists, blood seeping under doors, swarms of spiders, and clocks running out of control tend to send most people into a state of panic or disbelief.

Phantasm: The Arcanos of dreams. Those with mastery of its arts can slide a sleeping mortal’s soul out of its flesh and bring it along on a Shadowlands journey.

Puppetry: Puppetry is the Arcanoi that allows a Wraith to directly control the Mortals within the Skinlands from the Shadowlands. Many Wraith seek this ability or seek anyone competant in this ability for obvious reasons.

Usury: The Arcanoi of barter and trade. It is the ability to transfer either Pathos, Corpus, or any other objects.

Flux: This Arcanoi allows a wraith to manipulate and animate objects created by the living, regardless of whether the objects have any value.

Intimidation: A subtle art the molds the desires and obsessions of other beings. It allows a wraith to discover the wants and desires of another, either Quick or dead, and to squelch, modify, or replace those wants.

Mnemosynis: The Arcanoi dealing with the art of tracing memories, and, should the individual worker reach more difficult levels of achievement, of bringing those memories into the present. It is a powerful tool for obtaining information or ascertaining guilt.

>Of these Arcanoi, what does Henry instinctively understand while still trapped in his Caul?
>>

It had seemed like hours had passed. Still Henry found himself in the blackened out predicament where he could not understand where he was or how to get out. Finally however, he would get the moment of release he desperately had sought!
-------------------

With a mounting tension of exactness, the point blade of the scythe cleaved through Henry's Caul. Facing directly at him would be man in what seemed to be archaic Men-At-Arms armor, something he would see from elaborate paintings depicting medieval battles or from books he'd read when he was still alive. Behind the man would be two others wielding a.. crossbow and spear respectively. Beside the one who cleaved him out specifically, the other two wore strangest uniforms that he had ever seen before- a mix of modern made with mostly Roman style adfixes in terms of armor.

>Hierarchy
-------------------

A fist would slam straight through his Caul- but deliberate enough where it didn't land straight at his face. When the fist was raised so Henry could see who had freed him, he was greeted with a unique sight that baffled him. The one who freed him was huge wearing strange Gaulic era tribal-wear (it was just coincident that in the weeks prior to his deployment, Henry's unit had to take brief courses on French history). There were two other men with him- one man who was ENTIRELY skeletal with a 18th century French colonial uniform on wielding a Flintlock rifle. The other was just a man in a suit and fedora hat.

>Renegades
-------------------

Henry's Caul was gently opened by a ritualized knife. From his position face up Henry would see a man in Knight armor. He had a Flintlock rifle slung, along with a bastard sword. Two other flanked him with archaic Men-At-Arms armor, both of them holding pikes. Off in the distance when Henry raised his head a little from where he was laying from, he could see a strange figure in robes watching the process of him being freed from his Caul.

>Heretics
-------------------

Henry's Caul was furiously shredded open with a sword. Before he could even have time to react, manacles are clasped on his wrists with him being dragged violently up from his Caul! His aggressor was a man in a tribalistic face mask. His armor was a mix of Aztec and Spanish conquistador armor strangely enough. Behind him would be other men in similar apparel. Like Henry, there was a chain gang of other Ghosts all linked together by neck collars with chains.

>Thralled
-------------------

An idea had come to Henry at the cusp of all those hours being relegated to this darkened state. Over time with instinctual gleanings into his new being, he had realized that one of his powers allowed him slightly manipulate things- if only in small ways. Invoking Outrage, Henry tears a minuscle hole in his Caul- just enough to escape.

With the hole Henry had made with Outrage he put his right index finger through it. From there like some sort of quasi-knife Henry would slowly, but surely vertically cut the inch-by-inch until he made a full slit in the Caul that let him see outside.

He struggled to get up at first as he felt somewhat drained, but Henry suffered through it as his overall fortitude hardened in the wake of fighting he found himself in during his living hours. When he stood and looked around he realized that not much time had passed- to his right were the Germans still at the position firing off potshots a what he'd assume would be his fellow soldiers trying to stay out of range.

"Huns, I'm over here!" Henry would scream at the German soldiers in the emplacement. They went on with checking supplies, reloading, and speak among one another- as if he weren't there at all. Henry would gulp, then look down at his feet.

There was his body still relatively fresh. It was just as he expected- Henry had truly died. He was a Ghost as of now. This was supported by the fact that his feet up to his ankles were phrased over his torso. He could see his newly Ghostly feet, but they were more opaque due to the fact that he was indeed standing in the position where his body was, the body being in the "physical realm" of things Henry intelligently assumed. When he stepped away from his body they became "normal" when it got to raw ground.

Henry looked around. His other platoon members were similarly all laid out in death due to the mishap of tactics to allow them to be vulnerable so close to the German position. What got Henry the most interested was the strange attachment he felt toward his Lee-Enfield rifle. Somehow he instinctively knew that it kept him "present" so to speak. He couldn't fathom what it could mean.

What does Henry do?

>See if any of Henry's platoon members are also "trapped" as he was
>Head into the German emplacement to figure out the extent of which Henry cannot be seen
>Figure out why you feel so drained
>Head to where the main force of the British Expeditionary Force is

Beyond his Lee-Enfield, Henry distinctively felt that his own uniform shirt still on his body also seemed to be an "anchor" of a sort, for whatever reason. "Its because your entire uniform is ruined! What would Corporal Hall think about this"

Wait, what? Who is that?

"I'm you, you fool! Now that your finally on this side of the spectrum, we can finally commune at length- and you can be ensured that I have many things to sound off about you!"

Has Henry gone mad? Well this predicament within itself was mad by its own degree, but now he was hearing voices!

"How dare you fool, I'm no mere "voice", I am quite the reality to be correct- not a fit of mania!" the voice echoes out loudly within Henry's head. "Who in the seven hells are you!?" Henry thinks to himself within an internal monologue.

"Ah, so you can speak! Yes of course, who I am!.... Erm... Uh... I honestly... don't know actually. I only awoke after your, or should I say OUR.. demise." it says with a mix of confusion and maligned amusement. "Well whatever you are, please pipe do-" before Henry could finish, his Shadow barks up quickly. "Excuse me? Pipe down!? Oh I certainly will NOT do such a thing after your blunder leading to our death!" with echoed vigor and patronization toward Henry. What right did he have after his foolishness?

"It was orders, why be so harsh on me? Beside we thought the fog would cover us long enough." Henry responds back. This is only met with an internal hmph by Henry's Shadow. With the conversation directly back into "orders" in particular, Henry had remembered his troop- did they have the same outcome as him?

It was baffling! Henry's entire troop had all crossed into this side of the Shroud! All 22 of them! Among the most he was personal friends were Ben, Cooke, and Samuel- all three of course that had "made it" to this state (although "made it" is a bit tenuous since they were all decimated by a machine gun barrage).

"Great, now the whole idiot squad is back." Henry's Shadow dryly says at the development of Henry's entire platoon being also here. However Henry was stumped now. Try as he might, using his bare hands could not open the sticky, but also hardened Cauls. He didn't have any of his tools with him- they were still on his corpse in they "physical realm". The way he thought about it- he was essentially naked.. in the sense that Henry had realized that his entire "being" or "body" was sort of the same material as the Cauls, but a little more hardened.

His ghostly body was an exact replica of what he was wearing currently on his body- but as said before, his tools did not come with him, so when he collapsed where his utility knife would be; he only realized that his sheath was present, not the knife.

Now Henry didn't know what to do next. He could use Outrage like he did to get out himself, but he instinctively felt as if he was drained still as before when he initially struggled to get up.

What does Henry do now?

>Try and find an object that is in this "plane of being" that Henry can tangibly touch since he somehow can't pick up anything within the "physical plane".. which made since considering he was a ghost now

>Have Henry try to figure out why he feels so drained in the first place, there must be a reason.. it could be just chalked up to him just recently dying, but he had an inkling that wasn't the prime reason

>Attempt to open the Cauls with your raw strength

>Head into the German emplacement holding, see what the Germans are up too

Henry had tried for minutes to pick up his bayonetted Lee-Enfield but all that did was have his hands phrase through it no matter how many times he tried. He then went on to trying to grab his own knife from his body- the samething had happened. Henry's Shadow would laugh in amusement.

"You know maybe you ARE insane.. remember that book we read a few months before this draft? The name is lost to me, but remember- 'the definit-" Henry would finish off would his Shadow was about to say,"-ion of insanity is doing the samething over and over again.. yes, I know. You don't need to remind me" Henry would say in a cut off his Shadow's attempted annoying observation.

It would grumble and keep quiet again, allowing Henry to more clearly focus on his search. When the area he was searching in turned up relatively short of anything useful, he had decided to check outside areas to see if he could get his hand on something.

>Critical Success

It takes a few minutes, but Henry finally notices something in the middle of the now prototypical No Man's Land that has now taken shape; since the still living British troopers halted outright advancement and are now digging up trenches, allowing momentary calm- save for the occasional blind shot levied by either side. The thing Henry had noticed was a bayonetted rifle, just as his in the "physical realm" of being by his body a few miles back, but this one Henry had noticed was "crossed" over as well. It was a Winchester M1910.

Getting a more indepth picture of the scene itself- Henry could clear see that this was a sight of a bombardment from artillery from the mashed up pile of flesh and bone he somehow hadn't noticed immediately, he was too distracted by the magnificence of the Winchester. The version of the "physical" Winchester was predictably completely destroyed, with a part of the original owners hand still on the rifle. The gun itself across the Shroud was in mint condition, as if completely waiting for Henry. Henry's Shadow would hmph. "Don't get so excited, you only got a little lucky" Henry would merely shrug at his Shadow's assertion. In the end he certainly had gotten what he needed.

Picking it up he did a quick check- the chamber had a bullet still. Closing that and taking out the magazine, he would see four .401 bullets still inside the Winchester magazine. Slamming the magazine back in, Henry with rifle in both hands would walk back to the site of where his platoon had perished. He would look at the strange cocoons that he similarly found himself in an approximate hour ago.. Henry had his work cut out for himself.. This take a long time.
-------------------

It was hard at first, but once he cut out a few, his fellow platoon mates had also found a few knives or rifles from artillery'd portions of the current battle happening in the "physical realm". Many were shocked at what was happening to them. Some however were stilled that in some sort of twisted sense, "some form of life existed upon death". The worst fear for some atleast would be the full thread of self non-existence after death with no afterlife. Though this isn't the afterlife most were expecting.

Quickly sensing the mounting unrest, Corporal Hall would take the reigns of control. "Soldiers, stand at attention!" he would bark out. With the discipline they were taught in life, it had definitely carried over across the Shroud as everyone, including Henry quickly get in an ordered line.

Corporal Hall would remain silent for a moment, not knowing what to say. Not even HE could understand what was going on at all. The shock of seeing all the men he lead to their deaths were stirring in his being. "...Alright.. we are to leave to where the rest of our fellow forces are."

Cooke chimes up. "What about our.. bodies? Do we just leave them here?"

Corporal Hall contemplates before responding. "We'll come back to check up on them. For now we must make it to where the rest are... Even in death, we have to figure out a way to help out in the battle effort," the Corporal says with a firm voice. As the ranking superior, everyone takes up his orders- the platoon walks in ranks toward where the British Expeditionary Forces are making camp.

"This idiot again? Isn't he the one that lead to everyone's death in the first place? Why don't you say something?" Henry's Shadow exclaims with a chuckle.

"No, are you crazy? Do you want me to get in trouble?" Henry flippantly shoots back at.

Somehow Henry could feel from within inside his mind the that Shadow maybe shaking his head mockly at Henry's response. "What trouble? What do you mean? We're beyond that as of now, we're practically dead! This could be our second chance at survival after all, c'mon say something to him!"

We can talk to the corporal later he’s just as lost and confused as us, we should check up on our friends first.

Samuel was the first to speak among their section of the marching line. "You did real good Henry! We were trapped in that hellzone for hours!" the brawn of the friend group loudly exclaims.

"Its the ol' luck of his that Henry has of course," Ben would say, experimentally hoisting the weighty relic S&W Revolver he had found up and down to get a better hang of it.

Cooke would sigh. "The only horrid part is that our original guns are trapped on the other "side" completely.. Across the other sid- ah you know what I all mean."

Henry laughs. "No need to get frustrated Cooke, we're sure to figure out something." at this Henry's Shadow would rudely intercede from within Henry's head. "Cooke was always the paranoid rocker of the group, isn't he? Despite being older than you, the man can't even hold his liquor!" the Shadow said, laughing to itself.

"Would you shut up!?" this proclamation didn't come from Henry- though he was by a stroke of strangeness was about to say that very same thing, but was beaten to it. Henry, Cooke, and Ben along with a couple of other troopers marching looked to Samuel in confusion.

Being perturbedly embarrassed, he would quickly speak out. "I don't know what's happening guys, I keep hearing a voice in my head! It's telling me to do things I don't want to!"

Ben who is usually cheerful and rarely ever serious is so as of now. "Yeah I hear something along the lines like that too. What is it exactly?"

With the most experience in this phenomena so far, Henry would address what it was while they continued to march. "How do I put this from what I can piece together; it seems as if the voices in our heads are some sort of psychological awakenment that comments on everything we do incessantly. That as much all of you have probably come to know already.. but it seems as if these voices are tailor made at mocking or belittling the host.."

From within his mind, he could feel his Shadow do mocking mental claps. "Brave sir Watson, you figured out something that took you hours to fully understand. Though I don't most of the brutes here would even understand what you've said, so it may as well be a waste of time.

After his explanation the wrest of the Ghostly platoon and their march had stayed silent with the British camp was miles away. It was then however they came under a wield field of fire. "Germans!" one of the men in the platoon makes known, putting to a hill nearby- of which a similar number of platooned German soldiers were rested on.

"If they can see us, that means their dead too! Everyone take defensive positions!" ordered out Corporal Hall. With that everyone quick dived behind rocks or trees that were large enough to cover the whole or part of their bodies. It seems that large enough objects even from the "physical realm" cannot be phrased through easily, so the relic bullets that were being shot off by Germans could be covered away from.

In some sort of sick parallel as in life, now in death a similar situation would channel out. Either side would be relegated to staled positions as neither could adequately level the other out- with the German ghosts seemingly having an elevated bulwark just as their mortal counterparts; with the British ghosts having a similar action of taking cover with what the natural environment could provide.

This time however the Germans unlike their still living persons did not have access to the mounted machines or artillery- only rifles, small arms, or knives- that just like Henry's platoon, had to scavenge for around artillery impact zones for destroyed equipment that could cross over past the "Shroud". Even with that however, the Germans still had managed to land a few lucky hits on a few troops who had bad cover.

What Henry and 3 other friends at seen was the most damnedest thing they had ever seen, in both life and even in death now. Ghosts who are "killed" drop to the ground as normal, but seconds later a black sphere forms right in the center of the chests of the slain, with it somehow being able to be seen clearly despite it being pitch black. The spherical black sphere then causes "killed" Ghosts to spontaneously collapse within on themselves until all the bits of themselves are sucked into this sphere. After that the strange spheres vanish as soon as they come.

"What the hell was that!" Cooke had yelled in confusion and shock. Corporal Hall would be taking a few shots with his Lee-Enfield before turning to the general direction of where Cooke was. "Pay attention Private! Do you want to die a second time like them?"

"No sir!" Cooke would manage in exasperation, whilst focusing return fire at the top of the hill.

"Good! Everyone continue firing!" the Corporal would bark out. "The German menace must be pushed back!" he says with what could be assumed to be an elated take on the battle.

What does Henry do?

While still leaning against the tree Henry was covered at, he partially shoulders his rifle- then turns around from his backside and aims. The Germans themselves would be still be firing off with what little relic ammo or magazines they had found before this encounter. Henry's platoon would still be firing off against the position at the hill shooting down at them.

>Critical Success

Crouching down at the base of his tree cover, the British Private in life, now in death continues the fight even past the due of his service. This entire situation was crazy for Henry, but he had to quickly adapt- its what he was drilled into most during training, real soldiers must always be affable to strange change. So even in death he had to fight for Great Britain. For King and Country! "Hehehe, just don't fudge it up" Henry's Shadow mentions out while Henry is still aiming.

Henry would just smirk, not responding internally to what his Shadow chimed in about. Instead he takes careful aim up at the ridge of the hill. The Germans would entirely be focused on the rest of his platoon- not a single enemy unit had spotted him. Taking this advantage as much as he could, Henry finally fires off a round. The relic bullet just as it were if it still existed past the Shroud in the physical world, fired true in the Shroud across the ghostly world from the relic Winchester 1910 Henry had.

The precise fire lead for a round to hit a German sniper straight in the head- causing the sniper to flop straight to the ground, then collapse within himself after few seconds via what Henry's platoon are now dubbing as a "death sphere" at the center of fallen ghosts chests'. Just as in Mons and Mernes, Henry would quickly get into a straight focus once he got his first kill in a firefight. Something about just getting one kill before HE bites the dust ensures him, causing more confidence to take hold in himself.

Another round is fired off and this time Henry takes out another German, then another a few seconds later- the second one had tried to come down from the hill and flank Henry's position. At this point by Henry's self mental count he surmised that he had 2 bullets left in his Winchester rifle.

With the streak he was on, Henry billowed in a jack of overconfidence. An overconfidence that could either get him killed or get the results he desperately wanted to take fruition in. Putting his training to good use, Henry would make good time up the hill from the side while the bulk of the German enemy units were still firing off at his fellow platoon mates. It was then he get quickly noticed a German who spotted him at the same time Henry had saw him.

Henry Alan: 1d20(9)+ 5{IR} =14

German Soldier: 1d20(10) + 3{IR} =13

Key explanation: IR means Initiative Rating. Any combatants base Initiative Rating is their Dexterity + Wits. This is always a constant, while a 1d20 of chance is added to the Initiative Rating with any other possible modifiers. The final result is the Initiative Score to see who proceeds first in combat.

Being so close however Henry assuredly pricked the German straight in the side. He would scream in pain as it became lodged in! However despite being stabbed into the German would hoist his rifle above his head, then send hurtling down, bayonet bare straight at Henry!

[German Soldiers bayonet downward hit: 1d20(5) + Dexterity 3 =8]
vs
[Henry's grab at the incoming rifle: 1d20(14) + Dexterity 3 =17]
Defended!

The shock of the Henry's initial stab must have slowed the German down. Taking advantage of that, Henry reacted fast enough to let go of his rifle with his left hand to catch the wayward barrel of his enemies rifle, while Henry still held his rifle that was still lodged into the German with his right.

It was then the both of them found themselves in a curdling deadlock- Henry tried with his might to keep the rifle hefted as to not have the German's bayonet clamber down on him; while in the same opposite breadth the German was rigorously trying to ensure the bayonet would cleave true at Henry despite his grapple on the gun!

This all ceased however when a bullet would shoot straight at the German's neck in front of Henry. Raw ectoplasm splatter would dash onto Henry's face disorienting him. By the time Henry wiped his eyes with the left of his arm bicep and could see again, the German he was fighting with already was on the floor and in the process of being death sphere'd- which would leave two guns in Henry's current possession, the Winchester 1910 and what Henry could assume would be a.. Gewehr 98 rifle?

Snapping out of his internal line of questioning, Henry would notice that by the time he was fighting his own personal fight, the rest of the platoon had more or less secured the German position as of now. He saw the smolderings of a few German troops being Death Sphere'd (from wherever the sphere takes ghosts who "die", Henry definitely did not want to know of it in its specifications) while the remaining German soldiers rose their hands in surrender. They were "victorious" in this engagement, but what did that mean since they all were already dead?

"A death that could've EASILY been avoided if you were actually smarter than you thought you were" Henry's Shadow suddenly pipes up in feigned interest. Henry ignored his Shadow, walking to where the rest of the platoon would be massing at with the newly captured German POWs- 6 in total. He would have his Winchester slung on his back since it was low on ammo, while the Gewehr had 3 bullets in its magazine with 1 bullet chambered- which meant it had 4 bullets in total Henry could use in a pinch.

One of the platoon mates was gifted in a ability that Henry didn't know the name of at the time (Moliate) to sculpt the ghostly "flesh" of the German POWs face to shut their eyes and mouths.
(cont'd)
>>
>>4292190

This was ordered by Corporal Hall so the Germans wouldn't be able to relay back to where the British Expeditionary Force's position would be in the nascent chance they could escape. Blinding them was also pertinent since the platoon couldn't pick up objects from the physical realm, they couldn't had to improvise to mitigate chances of outright escape. The mouths? The were closed as to stop the curses levied at the platoon.

Apparently in the realm across the Shroud from life, all ghosts could understand each other in some strange "death" language. With the communication barrier lifted- disregarding a theoretical scenario on if they were still alive and had captured the Germans when they couldn't understand them- the curses the Germans charged at them were quite potent in this side of the Shroud.

With two soldiers having the 6 Germans to stay in place, Corporal Hall had everyone line up to account for losses. 8 had perished from the engagement, leaving the platoon with an inauspicious number of 13 left. Luckily for Henry all his friends had made it- losing them again would be unbearable.

"That would probably be the best if they WOULD die. I can't stand them at all!" The Shadow of Henry says, laughing to itself with a small mix of malice.

Henry cut off the laugh prematurely in anger. "Quiet you buffoon! " He would respond with while standing at attention still in the formed line. Henry's Shadow merely laughs more harder.

"Buffoon? That's all you can come up with? Are you really son of a professor?" it said with with its laughter slightly dying down. After that brief spat silence would commence as it was before while Henry waited for the next line of orders along with his other platoon mates. After Corporal Hall was done with his inspection the order was given and the march toward the BEF camp had continued- with the German POWs in tow.
-------------------
Northern France, British Expeditionary Aisne camp, September 21st 1914- Monday

After an hour stint of walking the ghost platoon along with its prisoners had finally made it to where their mortal counterparts had set up base-camp. Crates full of supplies were strewn about, guns galore were being attended to, tents were being set up in organized rows, sandbags with the few Maxims the BEF came with were being mounted, along with last but not least, trenches being dug up by the engineers of the Division.

Corporate Hall immediately had the German POWs secured sitting down with their hands on their head at the center of camp, with three appointed troopers keeping guard of them. Everyone was dismissed.. to do whatever as Hall didn't have the slightest of clue on how to react to this situation. Henry himself would be by a few crates watching the base being assembled by his very eyes. Like last time when he initially got out his Caul he had tried to make somesort of contact with the "living".
(cont'd)
>>
>>4292232

Just as last time however, Henry along with many other of his platoon mates could not get the living to notice them at all. They were truly damned as ghosts, ghosts of a war that involved scores of people over the pettiness of a few monarchs and the various Imperial powers of Europe. "Well atleast you did SOMETHING significant. Imagine if you never had the draft? What would you do? You didn't have the faintest idea on what you wanted to be despite use dad's connections to get yourself a swill job at Bristol University!" From wherever Henry's tried to put him down at, Henry didn't take offense to it as his counter ego was right- HE didn't know what he wanted to do at all in life at the time before his draft. Joining the army was the greatest godsend at the time since he was so stumped in the regard.

Was it worth dying over? Henry didn't know. He couldn't concentrate because still felt the concurrently draininess of his being when he first got out his Caul. What could this phemonema mean?

Snapping out of his revere of watching the still living BEF soldiery set up camp, Henry decides to check up on the German prisoners being kept at in the center of the camp itself. When he finally trudged to where they actually were he was predictably stopped by the lead appointed guard, Lance-Corporal Stewart.

"Private Alan, what do you need? Were you ordered by Corporal Hall to bulk up the guard over here?" L.Cpl Stewart would ask to Henry.

Henry would blurted out a slight chuckle. "No, I just actually want to speak to one of the prisoners."

"Why? Were you ordered to do an interrogation?" L.Cpl Stewart says in further confusion. Henry shakes his head.

"Not necessarily, but I'd be happy to commit to that if need be." Henry clarifies to his superior.

The Lance-Corporal grimaced at Henry. "Your not cleared for an interrogation, orders are only to keep the prisoners contained for now."

It would seem that L.Cpl wouldn't be having any shenanigans on his watch at all. "What a stick up" Henry's Shadow says after taking in the entire spectacle of Henry's attempted communication with the German prisoners.

(sorry for the delay, I had to step out to a store for a moment IRL)

Henry as being a bookish sort before his draft, was of course a recluse as many bookworm types were. His way of talking weren't as up to snuff as other teens who had spent their childhoods mostly socializing and dilly-dallying about. Still however he wanted to try and persuade his superior into letting him speak to the Germans. Fighting them for weeks in the living and even death- he had to rationalize his enemy to understand them more clearly.. maybe even convince them that further fighting would be frivolous considering the predicament they were in?

Before attempting all that Henry had to convince Lt.Cpl Stewart that he can pull off an adequate try at an interrogation despite no orders dispatched to do so.

[Henry's attempted persuasion: 1d20(20) + Charisma 1 =21]
Crit. Success!

Despite Henry's abysmal charisma, he somehow by some miracle convinces his superior that there is merit in trying to learn what the enemy could possibly know, even with the fact that they were all technically dead for now. A brief silence permeates the area where they all were at, but then Lt.Cpl Stewart nods affirmatively. "Go ahead, pick any of them. Roger will.. do his "thing".. and give them back who you choose to get their "eyes and mouth" back. The other two soldiers, who Henry would assume one of them being Roger, laugh at Lt.Cpl Stewart's obvious unease at the ability.

Henry would look to the group of German POWs in the platoons custody. They were lined up in two rows of three, back-to-back sitting down with their hand on their heads.

Who does Henry choose to interrogate?

He was completely skeletal save for the common German soldiery uniform you've witnessed countless times. His eye sockets where his eyes WOULD be located are warily glowed up crimson red. Not even his own fellow Germans seem to want to sit close to him

>Another one among the captured would seem to be the army priest of this squadron judging by the robe his "ghost flesh" was composed of over a flak-vest. He seemed ever serene, not phased at all by the situation he found himself in

>The next Henry had seen was a lanky, even more so than the initial tall German, soldier who looked very frightened. From the emblazon on the side of his uniform "ghost flesh", Henry could surmise he was a German engineer

>Among the last was the most bizarre, even more than the skeletal German. His "ghost flesh" (Corpus to be exact of what it was, its just that Henry doesn't know what it is yet) was made of pure Jade- Henry knew this since he had seen Jade before due to his father's wealthy friends. Even though Henry probably will fail miserably at attempting to even interrogate or shift the opinion of the squad leader of this captured group of German POWs, it was worth a try. Even though he was conditioned to hold the Germans along with the others belonging to the Triple Alliance as full on irreconcilable enemies- Henry HAD to speak to this German officer.. for some reason he just felt interested in speaking the man- mostly due to his awesome helm of course.

"That one." Henry says pointing at the German Officer. Lt.Cpl Steward nods at this suggestion. "Makes sense, he seems like the highest ranked here. We'd get more info from him." He says while motioning with his head toward the officer to cue Roger to use his own strange "ability" they all knew they instinctively acquired when they got out their Cauls. Roger as mentioned way before had an ability to morph the "ghost flesh" each and everyone of them possessed.

It took about 8 seconds tops as Roger carefully but precisely uncovered the bits of plasmic that covered the German officer's eyes and mouth. When his face was returned the first thing the four British troopers knew was that he was VERY angry.

"Sir, would you like to have a chat with us?" Roger asks as politely as he could to waver down the anger of the enemy officer. It only seemed to have made him more annoyed- maybe he took it as faux-politeness instead of genuine.

This time Lt.Cpl would try his luck, maybe due to the appeal of both of them being the highest ranked among their perspective groups as of now. "Listen I know you can understand us. Whatever this matter of existence is, we can understand each other fully now on this side away from the.. "physical" one as Henry sometimes puts it. Don't pretend it isn't the case." Again however the German officer would remain tight lipped, now less angry, but more in the fact that he probably didn't want to consort with the enemy.

The three of them would look to Henry, with Lt.Cpl Stewart beginning to speak up. "You're the one wanted to speak with him, say what you want to say and be done with it. I doubt he's going to listen anway."

"Even though he's a tight ass, I agree with Stewie lad here. Remember the girl? How you could barely even get to speak to her? Even socializing with your family members is abysmal, just give up on this stupidity!" Henry's Shadow says, knowing that in life Henry was horrid in matters such as this.

Utterly the Private to the German's authoritative discernation was baffling in trying to even dare to speak to him as an equal, much more even considering they were enemies. Try as Henry could, the German would get more and more tight angry than he was initially before.

"Yelp, you tried I suppose." The one soldier Henry didn't know the name of said while inspecting his rifle. Roger chuckles at how the German officers face would get more and more dour with Henry's each failed attempt at speaking to him. Lt.Cpl had enough.

"Alright you tried what you wanted Private Alan. The officer doesn't want to speak. We'll interrogate him another time.. with less than pleasant methods." That earns a hard withering uncompromising look from the German officer.

Feeling down about the whole endeavor only to fail outright, Henry channels this frustration in trying to take the Stahlhelm from the officer.. only to find that the helm was "apart" of the officers body. It couldn't be taken off... What the?

"Hahaha you idiot, what do you think your doing! How long have you been here but don't understand basic concepts such as a Corpus?" The Shadow of Henry says in a fit of mocking laughter.

"You do know I'm entirely new here, right?" Henry fires back at his incessant Shadow. "Not an excuse, you out of your entire platoon was the first one out the Caul! HAHAHAHAH" Henry just mentally rolls his eyes at the Shadow's lowblows toward Henry at the most randomest times. He shouldn't let such a vulgar figure get to him.

The officer was not amused at Henry's theft, no matter the fact his helm was apart of being. He would head butt Henry's hand away. The Private would yelp in moderate pain from the blow, but it was nothing serious as he was only it with the ridge of the front cap.. and not the menacing spike.

"Alright, that's enough. Cover him back up Private Roger." Lt.Cpl Stewart says at Roger. This ended as he thought it would.

Nodding his head in confirmation Roger used his ability again, covering up the entire of the German officers face as a few minutes ago. "You've had your chance at a little interrogation. It's over now. Head back to your post soldier." Lt.Cpl Steward barks at Henry. Who knows what kind of trouble he could get for this? Especially when such a grave insult as attempting to take an Officer cap was done on the German Officer by Henry.

Henry saluted then turned around to walk off. "What an asshole The Shadow of Henry would mention off-handedly as Henry marched to wherever he was going. Despite all the abuses the Shadow had said to him, it was this agreement Henry had to agree with...

Now Henry was by a few tents. The base as of noun was fully established up to this point. However it wasn't at full capacity as this base is merely a medical triad, supply depot, and tactical planning site. Most of the British Expeditionary Forces were off trying to hold off the attempted German push into Paris again. Henry was sure more would deployed to this camp in the coming days.

Beyond that Henry was certainly aimless. No new orders were being directed by Corporal Hall at all, he was still in the command tent. Probably to listen in on what the fellow brass were planning in terms of the campaign. He was sure that Hall couldn't directly speak in those meetings due to the state they were all in now, but just listening to them would probably be enough for Hall as Henry chose to believe.

He also notices a slew of more fellow British Expeditionary Force troopers wandering back just as Henry and his platoon were when they first got to this "side". The overall amount of new ghostly faces he had seen around camp were low in number though- which tacked to Henry as good since that meant Great Britain was facing minimal casualties... as of yet of course in actuality...

(Last update of today- we'll continue tomorrow)

A few hours pass until Henry realizes something as he wanders around the camp aimlessly. He could feel the RAW emotional output emanated by the living more clearly. It was certainly nothing piecemeal- something about being a ghost allowed him to experience them more vividly than ever then when he was alive. It was then he realized along with a few others who were just smart as him, that for some strange reason.. the dead on this side of the spectrum for some reason feed off emotional or spiritual resonance to sustain themselves. Even with Henry figuring this out, he had to decipher what specific resonances call to him.. he had to figure it out to gain the energy he desperately needed.
-------------------

Henry along with much of the other British Expeditionary Forces didn't know the exact name of it, but the energy they intrinsically found out about is a phenomenon called "Pathos". This energy is what ensures the Corpus of a Wraith (Ghost) stays together and the Wraith in question can function without becoming Harrowed (the type of deaths Henry had witnessed in the engagement they came under during their trek to find the camp). Pathos has differing names around the world to many ghosts, but among the Western dead it has had this name for millennia.

For a Wraith or Ghost to gain Pathos, it must either directly witness its
determined Passion or see it come to with fruition with direct means.
Each Passion is defined by an emotional sphere and number of dice to be rolled if that passion is sought
toward. Doing tasks that directly relate to the Passion automatically give Pathos.

Example: Rennen was a thief before his passing into the Shadelands. For this purpose, he seeks to Aid the Mortal Thieves (Thrill) 4. Using his abilities to aid any thrief, Rennen automatically gains 4 Pathos. If he does something else that is thrillful, he has a 4 dice chance to gain Pathos from that experience.

As you can see the Pathos syntax is this: X (Y) Z. X being the descriptor of what the specific Pathos trigger is to cause a surge of energy to embroil the Wraith, while Y represents the emotion being invoked. Z is the number of possible points at once the Wraith can derive from the Passion surge.

Just like Fetters, there are 10 points to distribute. No particular Passion surge can go above 5.

Also here is the sheet of Henry so far for anyone who wants to look: https://pastebin.com/H7J01KEW

Also before we leave it off here for tonight, here's some more clear examples to see on how Passions are structured:

Protect my daughter (Love) 3
Get revenge for my death (Hatred) 4
Collect every rare Juhad card ever made (Greed) 1
-------------------

These guidelines can help determine what Passion surges Henry Alan can develop centering around parts of his background. 10 points are available to distribute. Remember- no Passion can go above 5.
