Long ago, there was a fair and glimmering land, and its guardians were the Unicorn Knights.

The fair land was ruled by the Unicorn Monarch, and her symbol of rulership was called the Noble Scepter. It was an ancient and powerful token, and in the hands of one such as the Unicorn Monarch it could work strange wonders.

When the Noble Scepter was stolen, the Unicorn Knight Auralie was tasked by the Unicorn Monarch with the quest for its retrieval.

Beneath the ruins of an ancient sunken fortress, Auralie wrested the Noble Scepter from the clutches of the Brain Peeler and the host of creatures it commanded.

In doing so, the Unicorn Knight discovered the creature planned to use the Noble Scepter as a ward against the corruptive power of a pair of evil spirits which now haunted the dungeon and threatened to exterminate all life in the kingdom.

Auralie saw that her quest would be for naught if this evil was allowed to flourish unchecked, and so drew around her a party from the denizens of the dungeons.

First among them was Kallyat, the veil-clad Nekja. Auralie had hired Kallyat in the tavern above the dungeons. Kallyat, in return, had later spent her payment on an Essence of Immortality to coax the wounded Unicorn Knight back from the brink of death. No more could be purchased, for the merchant's alchemist had recently ventured into the dungeons and had not returned.

The second was loyal Hobby, creation of the wizard who had so recently kept the evil spirits contained. Auralie had protected Hobby from the fists of the creature's brother, a being called the Perfect Man. From the pair, Auralie learned that two men had been responsible for the release of the evil spirits, and that the wizard had ventured to the Brain Peeler to form an alliance against the spirits.

Third was one-eyed Marden, red-scaled and bearing a tail. Marden had crossed blades with Kallyat, then rescued her from the acidic guardian placed before the spirits' lair. From him Kallyat had learned that a second Essence of Immortality was rumored to lie somewhere in the dungeons.

Last was Gwyn, the winged witch, apprentice to the wizard, called a dragonate by some. Gwyn and Auralie had met as adversaries, for it was Gwyn who took the Noble Scepter into the dungeons of the sunken fortress on behalf of the Brain Peeler. From her, Auralie had learned that one of the men had been the merchant's alchemist, and the other had worn the emblem of a wolf. From Gwyn's cards, they had learned that disharmony and strife permeated the dungeons.

Still, not all was clear, and so the party divided, Auralie and Gwyn seeking answers in the charnel house, and the others seeking the lair of the spirits.

Kallyat found that the spirits had corrupted and enchanted the hapless alchemist wholly, for the man seemed lovelorn, and the grim muses were eager to turn his affections to their own ends. In the center of the lair, surrounded by soot-blackened walls, stood a great distillery. When refined, the contraption would yield a poison so powerful that the vapors would kill everything in the kingdom.

In doing so, however, Kallyat also discovered that while the evil magic of the spirits was blunted by the power of the Noble Scepter, their malice was not, and nor were their conjured blades.

The crafty Nekja escaped not only with her own life, but with the Waters of Rebirth, which some said could raise the dead.

Auralie and Gwyn, meanwhile, found that something stirred in the charnel house. A fanged creature picked over the bones of long-interred warriors.

Beside him crouched a second figure, seemingly bound unwillingly to the command of the other.
>>
The trespass was not unnoticed. Before the pair could flee, the Unicorn Knight and her companion were confronted by the creature. While he desired Auralie's blood, he desired even more to hold domain over another crypt, haunted by another like him.

Auralie demanded the release of his unwilling minion, but the creature bargained instead: If the Unicorn Knight would accompany him to the crypt below, he would free the other from servitude.

Around her, lit by the glow of the menacing puddle that steamed and bubbled before the great doors, the others began to speak. Each had their own idea, and each felt theirs was most urgent.

"I think we should tell everyone upstairs what's going on," Kallyat hissed. "Even if they can't help us, they might wish to flee from-"

"We should be working to stop those spirits before the alchemist finishes his concoction," snapped Gwyn. "We can worry about the others after we-"

"It won't do any good to rush in and drop dead if that scepter only protects one of us," Marden growled. "Pestia and Leprosa are too dangerous to face unprepared. We'll have to-"

"Hobby!" croaked the misshapen creature. "Fishslave!"

The Nekja followed close behind. "Where are we going?" Kallyat asked.

Auralie did not wish to linger in the room where the body of the Perfect Man still sat, but before she had stepped beyond view of the doorway, Hobby called to her.

With that, the party moved back, toward the black portal of the stairwell. They crept down slowly, for it was here that Auralie and Kallyat had been overwhelmed, first by the bloodthirsty cherubs, and next by the minions of the Brain Peeler.

But only silence greeted Auralie as she peered about from the landing into the catacombs.

"If those cherubs are here, they must be hiding," the Unicorn Knight proclaimed at last, and nodded for the others to follow.

No fishslave barred their way as they stepped within the murky caverns of the Brain Peeler, yet Auralie found herself ill at ease.

It was not Kallyat's will that freed her blade from the creature's maw, but the thing's tail-tentacle, which thrashed up through the water to batter the Nekja. Kallyat's breath was knocked from her as she was cast into the murky water.

Again the thing shrieked, for the Unicorn Knight drove her blade through it, over and over, until its twitching frame began to still.

Her shield retrieved, Auralie turned and found herself incredulous, for Marden and Kallyat were again debating the meal they might make of the bacow.

"Look, there's just a little bit left inside," Marden said. "I can pull it out, see?"

"It'd be a shame to let all this just go to waste," Kallyat agreed. "You said you could roast it?"

"We must be on our way as soon as you are able," the Unicorn Knight said graciously to the sprawled and moaning pair. "With Pestia and Leprosa as his muses, the alchemist Nerdry may finish his poison at any moment. If he does, we will all be doomed."

"What about that servant?" asked Gwyn, for she had waited to see if the bacow had truly been edible. "The one in the charnel house. He may be of use if we must confront the spirits directly."

"That... creature... said he would only relinquish his hold upon his servant if we accompanied him to the catacombs below," Auralie replied. "And if we would stand with him against the other like him which dwells down there."

Auralie found her understanding of events changed greatly, for the merchant's chansonnier still held a secret love for the same man who had been so utterly corrupted by the evil spirits Pestia and Leprosa.

Any further interrogation was halted, for the Unicorn Knight's attention was again drawn to her friends Marden and Kallyat. In their hands were held not just the eternal lamp, but the bottle of roiling Cabezan oil and the mysterious sealed urn as well.
