Alright it looks like mace/axe + shield wins with several votes.

You are Henric, a young man living in the frontier village of Horum. Settlers moved out to this forested land over the years awhile back, forming an independent community producing timber, meat, hides and other goods of the forest. You yourself have finished your day's work and are enjoying a cool honey mead outside the village tavern.

Your pals Eugen and Jasso are around, the former drunk enough to start armwrestling out of his league for copper, the latter trying without a hope to woo the tavern keepers' daughter. You chuckle to yourself and have another sip. They're knuckleheads, but steadfast friends. The sun is setting beautifully over the forested hills, and soon it'll be time to head home and have dinner with your Pa and sister.

The insistent clanging of a bell grinds the scene to a halt, and though everyone knows what it's supposed to mean, people hesitate at first. A small crowd streams out of the tavern itself as people peer out of their homes, word travelling faster than the runner sprinting down the main street. "Goblins!" he shouts, "We're under attack! We need some men to the palisade now, everyone else ready to fight!"

That lights a fire under the village. People are moving this way and that now, women and children crying out in fear, men yelling this and that. The off duty militia captain is out in his pajamas, shouting for all men to assemble in the square with weapons. Halvard the blacksmith yells that he's got some spare weapons at his shop, gathering a small crowd.

Your primary concern is to...

>Head to the palisade immediately to help the watchmen keep the goblins at bay.
>Head home to grab your weapons and check on your family.
>Grab a weapon from Halvard's and assemble in the village square with the militia.

You have to make sure your family will be safe. You rush home, passing many in a hurry. When you enter your house, Pa's already got his cap and jack on, and a spear in hand. Adalheid is standing by looking scared but relieved by your arrival. "Henric, what's going on out there?" your father asks. "Brigands? That uppity Baron's men back to harass us?"

"They're saying it's goblins, dad. They want all the men at the square ready to fight!" You move to pass your father and grab your own gear, but he bars you gently with a thickly muscled arm.

"Hold on boy, I need you to stay here and look after your sister."

You're caught up in the excitement of the moment, but also anxious about what could be a dangerous fight. You're definitely old and big enough to fight now but your Pa still tries to protect you like you're a boy.

QM Note: For this sort of skill check, I'll roll the dice if the option is voted for, this way we don't have to wait on dice rolls for an update. The difficulty shown is the number we have to roll higher than, out of 100, to succeed. Sometimes attempting and failing a check can have consequences so consider the success chance or consider other options. Suggesting clever write ins can open new options or give me reason to adjust a difficulty, so you can usually consider that an option even if I forget to include it.

"Alright," you nod, showing trust in your old man. You hope he'll be ok and go to arm yourself as he heads out to join the militia. From under your bed you produce a makeshift round shield, and from a chest a hammer with a nice heavy iron head.

Adalheid follows you into the room and looks scared; you give her a tight hug and assure her you're right here to protect her. You wait by the front door as darkness sets in. Your sister clutches your arm tight and you wonder yourself if your dad will be ok as you try to imagine the battle going on. You definitely heard, "They're over the wall!" The noisome clattering and clashing of arms, and... the primal roars and screeches of monsters from the untamed wilds. Shouts of defiance turn noticeably to panic and agony, and now you're really worried.

Now you can hear the screams of women and children too, and you crack the door and peer outside to see the glow of fires from over the nearest roofs. A gaggle of men is fleeing down the street you can see, and then you see... them. You can tell them apart even in the darkness by the way they move, bounding like apes after the fleeing villagers. They're fast, and the one in front sprints ahead, managing a mighty leaping tackle onto one of the men. The rest leave him behind as the monsters descend upon him with hacking weapons, and it's the sound of your sister gasping in horror that wrenches your attention from the scene.

You pull her away, quietly shut the door, and realize you need to...

>Get out into the streets and find your father.
>Stay here and hide, ready to defend yourselves if it comes to it.
>Try to escape the village with your sister in tow.

It's clear that things have gone for the worse. "We have to get out of here," you tell Adalheid. You just know that once they're finished in the streets these things will be tearing through the homes, and there will be no escape. "Stay right behind me, hand on my shoulder alright?"

"What about dad?" your sister whimpers. Your own voice catches in your throat. "He told me to protect you. Come on, I'm gonna get you out of here." Then what?

The two of you slip out once the monsters pass, keeping close to houses for concealment and making your way to the perimeter. You keep your eyes and ears open for enemies to avoid (Per) and move as quickly and quietly as you can (Agi).

Your heart is pounding as you make your way through Horum, Adalheid right behind you. You can hear a group of men still fighting somewhere, but over here there are monsters kicking in doors and dragging screaming villagers out of their homes. You need to get over the palisade. You've walked the woods, you know how to get around... get up into the hills and... figure things out from there. You stay close to the darkest shadows, trying to make yourselves small as possible, sometimes freezing in place and praying a passing group of monsters doesn't spot you.

They look like they stand a little shorter than a grown man, but are hunched over. Green skin where you can see it, though they wear leather and hide armor, and carry large oval shields. Are these goblins? You've never seen one yourself, but they're described as child sized and weak, dangerous in spite of their size and strength.

As you hurry across yet another street in plain sight, one of them happens to look your way and roars angrily. "Henric!" your sister warns you, as you watch the greenskin point right at you. The others are busy with prisoners and entering homes, but this one and one of his fellows is bounding toward you and Adalheid.

"Run!"

>Run as fast as you can with Adalheid, praying you can outrun or lose the greenskins somehow.
>Keep running, looking for a spot you can stand and fight with your sister.
>Tell Adalheid to run and stand your ground, determined to stop the greenskins.
>Split up and try to divert both greenskins to chase you.
>Abandon your sister to her fate and run for your life.

You hold unto your sister's small fragile hands, you begin to run away from the small little creatures, heading far from town, you weren't thinking of planning or escape, at this point, your entire body was screaming for survival, the path was filled with, you stumble a few times as your boots sink into the fresh mud from yesterday's rain.
Adalheid tries to help you get up but her face of worry turns into horror as you see the devilish green monsters approach with delighted faces, you have created some distance but it won't be long till they are unto you.

Running without a direction wasn't a good plan, heading into the woods but how are you going to go past the palisade? How are you going to get out of this nightmare? Screams of pain and sounds of fighting interrupt your thoughts as you step on the more solid ground of the town's dirt road.

Suddenly something jumps at you from the darkness

One of the creatures has managed to reach you in time, his smile reveals crooked and sharp teeth, he charges at you with a dirk.

For a brief moment, is as if time slowed down, you see the dark little creature run with great speed, he holds the dagger tight extending his arm reaching to stab.

An opening.

Your bash his arm with the edge of your wooden shield on a downward movement, it connects his arm now broken releases the dirk, surprise, and pain run across the monster's face but it is far too late. Your next move is to lift your shield with a vigorous pull hitting the goblin in his small chin shattering jaw, teeth and even tongue. It falls backward screaming of agony holding his face with one hand as the other arm limps next to him clearly fractured.

You smile to yourself, never in a million years you would've pulled something like this, the closest thing you've been to a fight was the casual drunk patron causing trouble at the inn.
Something tugs your long shirt, your sister, now looking much relaxed gives you a bright smile, she pulls you aside next to a wall, you earned some time to think on the next move.

You need to head deeper into town and stay in a big group.

Or should you? Those grotesque little man are after you, they are easy to kill should you stay your ground and send your sister ahead of you?
The both of you walk and rest next to a wall, the town is in chaos, someone is putting up a fight but for how long? is it your father? the guards? Are they losing or not?

Perhaps it is better to leave while you can, this village is lost, they are too many to count, the baron's keep is not far, he needs to know about this. The garrison is better equipped and prepared to handle these monsters than a bunch of peasants.

You turn the corner and walk around the main street, sounds of struggle, furniture being broken apart and screams are heard all over, you look all around you but it's useless. Nothing but a horde of people rushing to get inside, you grab your sister's hand as you try to pass through the multitude.

On one of the road you can see those creatures swarming, they are everywhere, so much chaos that is hard for you to distinguish between people fighting or struggling to stay alive.
Blood, corpses and guts splattered on the walls and the ground, they are savage creatures filled with nothing but hate for humankind, one of them is busy as he plays with the insides of a person, stabbing it repeatedly with a small knife.
The few goblins that are dead are torned into pieces, their blood is thick, the organs smell and look as if they were rotten.

You turn to your sister as you try to push your way, reaching the other side of the dirt road into a dark alley.

"I couldn't see father... We should go back h-home and hide" tears begin to form on her eyes "I hate this"

"Shshsh.. it's alright, you need to stay quiet, otherwise they are going to hear us" you try to comfort her holding her tight on a hug "It will be over soon, father is with the others"

Where the hell is the militia?

You readjust the mace on your belt, the makeshift shield feels a light on your arm, if you were to fight perhaps that can improve the situation but with your sister here is pointless.

Where is everyone running after? Shit, you couldn't even see a who was chasing who, you briefly saw the village's entrance at one point but it happened so fast, who was attacking who? Was it the militia? But there was so many of those monsters...

Going to the entrance could be where the militia is fighting or not... people were running far from there, where they being chased? Did they get through the wooden gates?

The main path is flooded with people right now, going opposite their direction is going to be a hassle and those goblins that were chasing after you... Did they break through the palisade? Or were the gates overwhelmed?
At this point you can't afford to stop and think much longer than this before those goblins cashing after you flank everyone, the entrance has to be your way out.

You begin to head to the entrance holding your sister's warm hand, helping her go through the rough terrain using the houses and buildings as cover. She effortlessly pulls her dress making sure the end of the skirt doesn't get ruined by the mud and grim.
She is beginning to get taller, it's amazing how fast she grew, considering that you are not far apart of age from each other.

You peek from one of the building's walls, hidden in the dark, a horrific scene is presented.

Fire, laugh, and madness.

The grotesque creatures run amok torching everything with, they grin as the torches get thrown inside house and warehouses, it doesn't take long for them to quickly start become engulfed in a fire.

The militia is partially in here, their numbers are dwindling by the minute, their state is terrible, one ginger boy struggles as he gets stabbed by numerous creatures climbing unto him dragging him unto the ground. He tries to wrestle them apart but is no use, the little bastards continue to stab him relentlessly.
The rest continue to fight against them armed with batons and spears, but they are getting surrounded, by something that drives your sanity to the ground, a much muscular creature with a rabid expression is bashing their weapons away with wild movements. His skin is green and he towers over the goblins, there is nothing but joy on those brief moments where he is not launching attacks.

Another comes from behind the few militiamen, he crashes his ax on one of the boy's shoulders, a scream of what could be described as pure agony follows after.

It's far too late from them, is it? How can you even stand a chance? This is a full invasion! The fire is spreading at a faster pace than you imagined. The smell of burnt flesh and blood reach you.

Your sister pulls apart from the scene, you are starting to get drenched in a cold coat of sweat, her face brings some peace with this horror is too much for you to bear with.

No!

Everything is lost! There is no way to get out of this! This hopeless!

You pull your sister apart, you need to leave... escape at any cost... Everyone is dead already!

"Henri-" she calls to you trying to stop you

"Everything is on fire.." you hold your head closing your eyes "The entrance! We need to leave!"

You dash from the back of building for the village's entrance, your sister follows behind, a horse passed beside you almost running you over. It's still carrying his dead rider, a broken spear is inside of him, passing through his abdomen.

You dodge pass it, your sister barely manages to step away, you turn to back grabbing her arm pushing her ahead.

A few goblin notice you as you run, some of them are too entertained by the fire, others got a too close and now they run around being burned alive.
You hear a call of help, you turn to your side next to the palisade near the entrance, a militia boy is fighting one of the larger greenskins, you recognize him. It's Eugen! He is against the logs being choked to death with his own spear, the monster is trying to press it against his throat, they both struggle. If you were to attack him while his back is turned oyu might have a chance.

No.. The village is done for.. You need to save your sister...

You tell to yourself that is survival, not cowardice, there is no point on turning back. This fight is already over and everyone lost, you are almost there near salvation.

You continue to run ignoring the screams.

A large shadow reveals itself through the smoke clouds, one of those monsters saw you trying to leave. A monster of dark green skin, sharp teeth, and strange outfit of hides, bits and pieces of leather tied together with strings

You begin to run in panic, you cannot fight him with just a small mace and a piece of board attached to your arm, the monster notices you rushing for escape so he begins to pursue you.
The beast of a man tries swings at you with a large sword, luckly it you are too fast for him to connect the strike yet he follows the movement of the blade, slashing your sister across the chest, leaving through the shoulder.

She falls backwards from the impact of the blow, the greenskin turns his attention to your sister.

You turn around as you watch her fall backwards, she yelps a scream of pain as you stop dead on your tracks, from this point of view, you see the flames start to get higher and higher, coating the whole village in smoke.

There's a moment where a man draws the line and stands up for himself, what separates man from child.

This is your moment.

You detach the mace from your belts, a sturdy stick with an iron ball attached to the end, you never needed to use it before. A simple tool that you never really used, all these years collecting dust.

The back of the green beast fills you with anger, you walk up to him readjusting the rope of the shield, you launch an attack, it connects but you don't feel the impact doing any damage. In fact, it makes him turn around, you have his attention.

His face turns bitter as if being bothered, he drags his blade through the mud lifting it once more, his grip his tight as he raises his arm for a downward slash. For a moment, you see the face of your sister in a panic.
The movement is heavy and long, it doesn't take you much to step out of the way, there is an opening.

You decide to throw your arm in a sideways movement, the ball of the mace aimed to the face of the monster, suddenly he parries with one of his forearms, the impact is easily deflected, he launches himself at you, charging with his shoulder.

You stumble backward as you try to regain footing, the beast throws a fist at you, only to meet your shield. There is quite the force behind the punch, but not enough to hurt you but you cannot say the same for the shield. It will eventually break, only but a matter of time.
The greenskin man lifts his blade once again for another attack, it's face is filled with anger.

Smoke is starting to invade your nostrils, making your eyes tear up.

If you keep this up, both of you will be suffocated to death or worse... Images of your sister flashes across your mind, you turn to where she was on the ground, only to find nothing but a pool of mud.

She is gone.

The greenskin once again launches an attack.

Rolled 84, 19, 96 = 199 (3d100)

The giant sword passes right next to you, either instincts or fear, the swing avoids you completely.

His movement gets caught on a goblin that decided to get in the middle of your duel, the blade passes through his collar bone leaving through his ribs like butter, the small creatures make a gurgling noise has air escapes his lungs for the last time.

It leaves the large man exposed enough for you to try to hit him again.
As he begins to lift the sword, this time, you put some weight as you aim for it, the strike hits his shoulder. You hear a grunt as the greenskin stumbles, he retakes his stance holding the blade with both hands, anger fills his face.

The strike left a large red bruise on one his shoulder, it will definitely hurt tomorrow if he lives.

You both continue to engage in this fight, you mostly dodging the beast's brutal attacks.

The temperature of the area is too much to bear, you feel like being boiled alive, sweat drenching your clothes makes every move harder and harder while your opponent continues his advance without care, sometimes even getting too close to the flames.

He is bold and wild, it will only a matter of time before the smoke gets you.. or your insides get cooked. This needs to end, right here, right now.

>roll bo3 1d100 for a final attack

I feel like the fight has been dragged out for too long with all these rolls

>73 vs 96

The creature begins to imitate your posture, he moves around the shoulder where you hit him, we resume his stance. As if there was an unspoken talk, you understand that this is the end, one of you will die here.

A massive sword comes forward in a flash of unspeakable speed, your reflexes act instead of launching an attack yourself, you raise your mace hoping the iron end is enough to stop its course and parry the sword out of the way. But it isn't.

The mace splits in two, the blade cleaves your shoulder, digging a large slice across your chest.

Pain, cold, the sensation of iron on your tongue... It all happens in an instant and then it stops. The air on your lungs explodes in a gasp, as it tries to leave your body.

You lower your arm, it still holds to the wooden handle of the now broken mace, your legs feel stiff, you cannot move anymore.

The greenskin lifts the blade for another attack, you block it with the shield, the pressure of the blunt edge shatters the wooden planks as well as your arm. The bone is exposed tearing your flesh.

Your knees drop.

Even though you have many wounds, you are still conscious, either through anxiety, embarrassment, or fear. The monster steps closer to you, his face is off disappointment? Disdain?
Your body screams of pain, a tremendous lighting runs across your body, you bite as hard as you can as the blood pours your mouth. Among all that suffering, there is a hint of pleasure with the broken edge of your weapon you stab him.

It sinks deep in his abdomen, a backhand crashes on your jaw throwing your body to the mud, eyes of anger stare at you.

Everything goes dark as smoke, fire, and blood begin to fill your vision.

Everything is dark, you are embraced by something warm, the light is dim and your vision is blurred.

"I must say that was quite entertaining, you ran but then returned, even though you were filled with pure dread and insanity. I guess you would have to do, for now, the others did nothing but run.. few put up a fight, oh well. Tell me what is it that you want?" A voice speaks, it's nor man nor a woman yet its softly.

You refuse to offer up another and instead you present yourself into the flame, it burns and in an instant then the flame disappears leaving no trace of smoke.

Your human emotions are not tainted, your sanity is in check and uncorrupted, but know that one day your death is inevitable

There's only darkness, everything is quiet, there is no noise nor anything that calls to your attention but then that is not true. You can still hear your voice, you can still think, you still exist in this very empty space.

Then it hits you, suddenly something bright interrupts the scene, it's white and it brings you discomfort.. then it turns into an aching pain, you can feel it crawling over your skin and your organs.
You begin to come to your senses, you understand that you do have a body composed of two legs, two arms, a torso, and a head.

The white light shines brightly almost blinding you.

You open your eyes, the sky is covered clouds, you can't tell if the sun has started to fall or if is still rising. There is a slight mist traveling through the air.
Moving causes lightning of pain to travel through your body, you lift your head looking over at your body covered in a thick layer of gray ashes, which they break apart as you move.

There is a foul smell of rot and burned grass in the air, around you there are bodies fully covered by ash, you can tell that they were villagers.
All around you reminds you of winter, then snow starts to fall leaving the village hidden in a coat of white.

You realize that one of your arms is completely twisted, your forearm is broken in two pieces, you are afraid to look even further. The wounds are screaming of pain, you wish you could cut the arm off, you need to find help but no point of laying on the ground here.

You try to get up, the pain begins to grow and grow as you continue, you end up stopping for a moment to breathe. You use your other arm for support, you managed to lift your torse.
From the new perspective, you can see the remains of the village more clearly, corpses and pieces of guts are on the ground, most of the buildings have been consumed by the fire leaving nothing but burnt pieces of wood.

The houses have been ransacked broken into, you can imagine that everyone valuable that there was it's now gone, the silence is unsettling. You begin to wonder if anyone survived at all, some of the corpses are small enough that you can't tell if they are remains of goblins or children.

The fences around the village are in poor state as well, most have been fully breached and broken apart.

The feeling of pain is constant but as long as you stay quiet, it begins to dull, from here you can think of a few ideas.

Perhaps your house is still safe and standing, you are going to have to crawl or use the ruins as support to walk from there you can take care of your wounds.. but then again, no way to tell if the fire didn't destroy it or perhaps you can use a stick, climb the hill path unto the baron's manor, alerting him would be very wise. Both of them will require effort.

There's a third option, there's a nearby river that the village uses for farming and drinking, you remember a few fishing huts built alongside it. If anyone survived they probably went there, but you haven't been there in a while so figuring out the path might be tricky.

Your wounds are in a terrible state, but they are not bleeding, the fire burned you're the slash on your chest. But you still need someone to take a look at it... The baron definitely has someone that can help you, your house might have some medicine left behind.
