In the grim darkness of the 41st millennium, you are a completely ordinary citizen. One among quintillions, you are not a Space Marine, you are not an Imperial Guardsman, you are not even a PDF member. No, you are a common laborer and you must do everything that you can to meet your tithe in the Emperor's Name. What kind depends on what world you live on but that isn't a choice anyone has. Fate will do as it will and you must suffer the consequences.

>Toughness: 11: Your constitution is average for an Imperial citizen, that is to say you are malnutritioned, riddled with "mild" diseases, and have a bad case of gout

>Intelligent: 5: You are the ogryn equivalent of a genius, that is to say you cannot comprehend anything more complicated than the simplest tools and numbers above ten are difficult.
>Perception: 6: You are almost blind and nearly deaf, thanks to a lifetime of industrial working conditions with no protection beyond the Emperor's Blessing.
>Willpower: 3: You have almost no mental fortitude, your mind is an open book to anyone with any psychic power whatsoever and the trials of temptation are excruciating.
>Fellowship: 4: You are blunt, to the point, and uglier than the undersides of most boots to boot, but that doesn't matter much when your only responsibility is to lift and drop heavy objects in the Emperor's Name.

You are in the 41st millennium, on a planet called Xillion V somewhere in the Segmentum Obscurus, shoulder deep in a pit of gravel somewhere the sun doesn't shine. That is the beginning and end of your greater understanding. The God Emperor blessed you with being born here, you are blessed to labour for the God Emperor's Imperium, and one day you will be blessed to die in the God Emperor's Name. That is all you need to know. A familiar saying comes to mind.

>++BLESSED IS THE MIND TOO SMALL FOR DOUBT++

You wonder what it's like on Holy Terra. They say it's a paradise, with fields of green grass and blue skies and Saints ready to heal the sick on every street corner. You know that's true. That's what the overseer told you. One day if you work hard enough, you'll get to go to Holy Terra and see the God Emperor there. That's what he told you. It has to be true. If it wasn't true, then that would mean-

>*CRACK*
>"GET BACK TO WORK UNIT #565288382798144106558 OR SO HELP ME IN THE GOD EMPEROR'S NAME I WILL HAVE YOU FLAYED!"

The man beside you wails when the blessed overseer's sanctioned whip of labour encouragement cuts his back open. He stumbles, catches himself on the God Emperor's shovel, and goes back to digging the God Emperor's gravel. You stare. His name is Braccio Gasch. He has a spot next to you in the communal sleeping quarters, you share a ragged blanket and once a week during your generous fifteen minutes of rest time you can talk. You like him, but he's scrawny and can't hold a shovel well. You hope he isn't made into corpse starch like-

>*CRACK*
>"UNIT #565288382798144106559, SO HELP ME GOD EMPEROR ON HIS HOLY THRONE! I WILL NOT TOLERATE LAZINESS!"

The gravel next to your shoulder goes up in a cloud of dust. You pretend to scream in pain so that the blessed overseer doesn't try to whip you again. Lying to the blessed overseer is blasphemy. He said so. You pray that the God Emperor forgives you. The God Emperor didn't put you here to waste the God Emperor's time. You've spent five minutes thinking instead of working. That's a sin and the blessed overseer tells you those are bad. You need to get back to work.

>5 < 6 = Failure!

>4 > 2 = Success!

While you dig you think about your place in the God Emperor's Imperium. Without labourers like you, the God Emperor's Imperial Guard wouldn't have sandbags to protect themselves from the filthy heretics that abandoned the God Emperor. You are blessed to be given the chance to serve the God Emperor. You are lucky to have a blessed overseer that tries so hard to keep you working. The blessed overseer works the hardest out of anyone here. You know because he said so, and he's blessed by the God Emperor because he is the only one that's strong enough to carry the burden of encouraging everyone in the gravel pit. You don't know what you would do without the blessed overseer to guide you in the Emperor's Name.

You think about this long and hard for the rest of your eighteen hour shift. You manage to stack enough of the God Emperor's gravel to keep up with the God Emperor's wheelbarrows and make up for Braccio's slowness. You feel sorry for Braccio. He always has so many cuts and bruises. If it weren't for you, he would probably already be made into-

>"UNITS #565288382798144106550-80, YOU ARE DISMISSED! I WILL SEE YOU IN APPROXIMATELY SIX HOURS! THE LAST TO ARRIVE WILL BE SERVE AS AN EXAMPLE!"

A whole six hours? What a blessing! Usually the overseer holds you for an hour overtime. This could give you a chance to catch up on your prayers to Holy Terra! The next shift is approaching the pit. You crawl out and follow Braccio back to the communal sleeping quarters, a sheet metal building with a roof so short you could reach up and touch it. The place is almost empty, with barely fifty of your fellow labourers resting. Braccio stumbles to the moth-eaten blanket you've been blessed to have, curls into a fetal position and weeps. Truly, his faith in the God Emperor is strong.

You decide to comfort Braccio with the knowledge that the God Emperor watches over him and that he is blessed to labour for the God Emperor's Imperium. You also hug him, both to comfort him and keep any of the other labourers from stealing the blanket. The blanket belongs to the God Emperor's Imperium and stealing from the God Emperor's Imperium is blasphemy. You know because the blessed overseer said so when you were privileged to watch a labourer who stole a shiny rock from the gravel pit receive the blessing of repentance and also fifty lashings.

>4 = 4 = Success!
You take ten whole minutes out of your sleep schedule to talk to him. At first he curls into a tight ball and starts shaking but when you wrap him a hug he goes limp and mutters something about how Holy Terra waits for the doom souls of Xillion V, whatever that's supposed to mean. You really think you reached him. After that you fall asleep, are blessed to have only a mild headache from some dream you can't remember, and spend your first thirty minutes in mandatory pre-work prayer. You notice that Braccio chooses to sleep for fifteen more minutes and then only spend fifteen minutes on the mandatory pre-work prayer, which is supposed to last half an hour. That's a blasphemy against the God Emperor, even if only a little one. You're supposed to report something like this to the blessed overseer but he's the closest thing you have to a friend and he has been having a hard time in the gravel pit lately...

>What should you do?

>Report what you've seen to the blessed overseer, like he says, it's for his own good
>Talk to him and let him know that you're worried his faith and work ethic are slipping

You decide that if Braccio is too tired to pray the allotted time, you can do it for him. You hear the rest of the labourers leave the communal sleeping quarters and get worried but keep your eyes closed and pray until fifteen minutes have passed. There's a big chance you're going to be late for digging the God Emperor's gravel for the God Emperor's Imperium and that makes you feel guilty, but looking out for your friend makes you feel good. You aren't sure how you should feel but you know you need to hurry if you're going to reach the God Emperor's shovel rack and get into the God Emperor's gravel pit before the blessed overseer notices.

>1 < 4 = Critical Success!
You leave the communal sleeping quarters and sprint as fast as you can. It makes your lungs hurt to move so quickly and you're so determined you don't even realize it but you reach the God Emperor's shovel rack, grab the shovel the God Emperor's Imperium has blessed you with having, and are the first to get into the God Emperor's gravel pit. By the time the rest of the labourers arrive you already have a small pile stacked and the blessed overseer is impressed.

>"YOU SLOVENLY WRETCHES SHOULD ASPIRE TO THE EXAMPLE UNIT #565288382798144106559 HAS SET! HE GETS AN EXTRA RATION AT MEALTIME! MATCH HIS PACE AND MAYBE IT WON'T COME OUT OF YOURS!"

That is the nicest thing the blessed overseer has ever said to you. Truly, the God Emperor must have smiled on your devotion. You think a few of the others glare at you when they get into the gravel pit but you don't care, because the God Emperor has truly blessed you today.

>"UNIT #565288382798144106536! YOU ARE TWO MINUTES AND FOURTEEN SECONDS LATE! THAT IS ONE-HUNDRED AND THIRTY-FOUR OF THE GOD EMPEROR'S SECONDS WASTED BUT I AM MERCIFUL AND YOU WILL ATONE WITH ONLY SIXTY-SEVEN LASHINGS!"

A choked voice, clearly weeping in devotion for the chance to repent speaks.

>"P-please blessed overseer, I-I sprained my ankle four days ago and have been struggling to-"

>"THE GOD EMPEROR'S IMPERIUM DOES NOT TOLERATE WEAKNESS AND NEITHER SHALL HIS OVERSEER! EIGHTY LASHINGS!"

The labourer casts his head down, limps over to the God Emperor's sanctioned labour encouragement whipping post, and trembles in awe of the God Emperor's majesty as another labourer uses the God Emperor's rope to tie his hands. You pause for a second as the blessed overseer begins to preach about the evils of laziness and virtues of punctuality. Most of the others have stopped to watch and take the chance to rest, but you already have a headstart. Maybe this is a chance to dig even more gravel than the God Emperor's quota to fill the God Emperor's sandbags.

>What do you want to do?

Normally you could do both without a problem but your Intelligence is so low that basic multitasking is difficult. You could attempt to but if you failed, you wouldn't gain anything from either. Your stats are gradually improving based on the choices you make, enough time and effort could bring to you to 20 or even as much as 30. Improving beyond that point would take augments or worse and there's only so much an illiterate labourer can do to improve their Intelligence. Do you want to take the risk of trying to do both?

>>4215602
Braccio went with the rest of the labourers, he's next to you in the gravel pit and trying not to fall asleep on his shovel handle. Sharing is caring. You can start waking him on your own if you want to, if he missed out on digging ghe God Emperor's gravel for the God Emperor's Imperium and disappointed the blessed overseer that would be terrible.

Interrupting the holy duties of the blessed overseer is a form of blasphemy, and he is within his rights to determine what does and does not count as an interruption. The gravel pit generally digs in silence but hymns to the glory of the God Emperor, the holiness of the Saints, the power of the Imperium, and the value of hard work are considered acceptable. Every now and then someone sings, but most people prefer to hold their breath and singing hymns incorrectly is a sin that can and will be punished at the blessed overseer's discretion. You can attempt to speak to the blessed overseer during your five minute mealtime if you wish, your early arrival gives you more leeway than you would usually have.

>>4215699
Digging gravel and loading it into a pile while trying to listen carefully and comprehend the blessed overseer's wisdom is challenging, but digging and loading gravel while slapping Braccio's shoulder every five minutes isn't hard.

>>4215722
Braccio is much smarter than the average labourer and has taught himself how to read a few words of Low Gothic script, but the blessed overseer says thinking too hard is dangerous and a closed mind is a fortress of the God Emperor. Sometimes you worry about him. He's very weak and frail, and his condition seems to be worsening by the day. You don't know what you would do without him.

The lower a roll is, the better. The goal is to roll equal or under your relevant stat, in this case Strength and Agility. For particularly easy tasks you don't always need to roll. If you weren't clumsy there wouldn't be a need to roll for piles, just like how a Bloodthirster wouldn't need to roll to tear you limb from limb if it caught you, as your strength and toughness are a fraction of what it can bring to bear, or vice versa, if you caught a particularly pathetic grot in your hands.

You try not to think about the sinner on the sanctioned labour encouragement whipping post and try to do the best job you can. For what feel like hours you shovel gravel and load it onto the pile, but you don't forget about your friend and when he seems like hes's going to fall, you're there to catch him and shake him awake. He does his best to dig and even contributes enough to the pile that the blessed overseer doesn't even notice how slow and shaky his shovel is. You are there for him and you've dug a good pile. Mealtime is almost here, all that's left is to get one last-

>*CK-THUNK*

For a split second you could swear you felt a shovel handle on your ankle, and you're sent stumbling into the God Emperor's gravel! On instinct you try to catch yourself but only roll and make it worse, scattering the God Emperor's gravel all over the God Emperor's ground! Oh no oh no oh no this can't be happening. You were doing so good, you got here early and helped your friend and even got extra rations, but now- The blessed overseer just saw the entire morning's quota wasted in less than ten seconds. He snaps to attention and starts approaching with his sanctioned labour encouragement whip held ready. For a second, you think you can hear a quiet chuckle nearby, coming from someone on the other side of the gravel pit.

>"UNIT #565288382798144106559!!! SPILLING THE GOD EMPEROR'S GRAVEL ON THE GOD EMPEROR'S GROUND?!? WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS!?!"
Oh no oh no oh no oh no-
>*CRACK*

A cloud of gravel is flung into the air when the blessed overseer swings his sanctioned labour encouragement whip at your feet. This is terrifying. You remember the last time you sinned like this and were allowed to repent, but you don't even know if that was you this time or if-

>"EXPLAIN YOURSELF OR I'LL RIP A CONFESSION FROM YOUR TONGUE!"
>"Uh, uh-uh- I-I"

While you're trying to find your words, Braccio lays his shovel on the ground and steps in front of you with his hands on his head.

>"... Yes, yes I was sir. I apologize sir. It won't happen again sir."
>"GOD EMPEROR ON HIS GOLDEN THRONE, IT WON'T! GET TO THE WHIPPING POST!"

Your friend goes still and starts to walk. Wait, that's not what happened. No no no... Lying to the blessed overseer is a serious sin and you're required to tell the blessed overseer when another labourer tells a lie, even if it's in the communal sleeping quarters. Telling it to his face is even worse! But he did it for you, just like you prayed for him and tried to keep him awake. You're so confused and Braccio is about to get hurt repenting for a sin he didn't make and you only have a few seconds left to do something!

>What do you want to do?

>Beg the blessed overseer to let you demonstrate the beauty of martyrdom for your fellow labourers.

The blessed overseer scowls, bringing back his sanctioned labour encouragement whip then stops, apparently seeing the desperate honesty in your eyes. He spits on the God Emperor's ground and grits his teeth, incensed.

>"WHO WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS?"

You try to remember but you didn't see them yourself, only felt the God Emperor's shovel handle catching your ankles. You scratch your head.

>"I-... I don't know blessed overseer sir. They got me fr'm behind n' I didn't see 'em. Sir."

An irritated growl escapes him, clearly frustrated that he won't get the chance to bring the sinner to repent. Braccio stops, casts his head down, and tries to stay silent but the blessed overseer isn't known for his weakness of memory.

>"His mind is... too small for doubt and I should've been doing more to watch him. If anyone deserves to be whipped, it's me, sir."

The blessed overseer stares blankly, then scowls, contemplating.

>"SO BE IT! NOT ONE OF YOU WILL EAT UNTIL THE GOD EMPEROR'S GRAVEL IS PILED HIGH FOR THE GOD EMPEROR'S SANDBAGS! ANYONE TO COME FORTH WITH PROOF OF THE SABOTEUR'S IDENTITY WILL RECEIVE AN EXTRA MEAL RATION! A CONFESSION WILL EARN THE GOD EMPEROR'S MERCY!"

The labourers stare, shocked that no-one is about to be encouraged, and snap back to attention as the blessed overseer snarls.

>"NOW, GET BACK TO WORK BEFORE MY PATIENCE WEARS THIN!"

>16 = 16 = Success!
>1 < 5 = Critical Success!

The other labourers work halfheartedly correct someone else's mistake but you scramble to dig, scooping gravel and throwing it over your shoulder so fast that your eyes can barely keep up. In only fifteen minutes the God Emperor's gravel is almost restored and in half an hour there's not a sign it was ever knocked over. At some point the blessed overseer gives the call for mealtime but you don't hear him and keep digging. Ignore the hunger and bury your shame, ignore the hunger and bury your shame, ignore the hunger and bury your shame, ignore-

A hand clasps on your shoulder. You realize it's been nearly twelve hours since you started. You turn to see it's the blessed overseer, drop your shovel, and throw up a crude salute. He gives a thin smile.

>"AT EASE UNIT #565288382798144106559. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. DISMISSED."

He claps you on the back and leaves for wherever the blessed overseers go when the labourers finish their shifts. You stare, barely comprehending the gravity of what he said. Praise the God Emperor. It's time to go back to the communal sleeping quarters. You find Braccio is awake, waiting for you. He's hiding a ration bar below the blanket, presses it in your hand, and whispers.

>"You did a good job out there Arriand. I don't know what might've happened if you didn't step in. Take it, you never got your extra ration and deserve this more than I do."

You think long and hard. Ration bars don't come out of nowhere, they come from the God Emperor's blessed manufactorums somewhere else, then they're brought here by the God Emperor's blessed transports. There are only so many ration bars every day and he didn't get an extra ration bar, which means that Braccio either stole this or... He would never steal from someone which means this must be his, from mealtime, and that he saved it for you. If you weren't so thirsty a tear might come to your eye.

>>
>>4217489

>>
>>4217447
You could ask the blessed overseer if you can volunteer, the PDF is in dire need of additional autogun fodder valiant martyrs and any volunteers count toward the quota. They also make the labour unit less capable of meeting the quota in the future so you would have to give a good argument, especially after how well you've been doing recently. Wasting the PDF recruiter's time with volunteers that don't meet their bare minimum standards is a mild offense and for the blessed overseer, that presents little gain for massive risk. That, and if you left, you don't know who would take care of Braccio.

PDF tend to get better rations but heretical activity in the deepest recesses of the slums have brought medicine to extremely high demand and getting any would take some doing. Rumour has it the PDF is suffering grievous casualties to hold the filthy heretics at bay but reinforcements have been sent for.
>>

You pause, wrestling with the implications. You're extremely hungry but if Braccio starves, he could get sick or worse. Both of you need the ration bar. The only right thing to do is share it. You make sure to break it very gently so there's no sound, and then pass the piece that looks biggest back to your friend. He stares at it, stunned.

>"I-I can't take this. N-not after you've-"
You interrupt.
>"Then take it for me."
Your friend goes silent, then takes the ration bar. The two of you eat in silence, go to sleep, and awaken in time for the pre-work prayer. Braccio's prayer seems particularly intense today. That's good. True faith earns the blessing of the God Emperor. You know that because the blessed overseer told you so. You both leave in time and start walking to the gravel pit, but you notice someone is lagging behind. They're going half the speed of everyone else and limping. At that rate, they're bound to be late.

You realize this is the same sinner that repented yesterday morning. His ankle is swollen even though it's wrapped in rags from his shirt, and you can see the lashings on his back are still red. They aren't the first and if they don't get infected, they'll leave a scar like the rest. If you wanted to, you could stop and help carry him to the gravel pit so he wouldn't be late but then there's a good chance you'd both be late. Then again, you don't want to disappoint the blessed overseer and he did commit the sin of laziness yesterday. Maybe you should leave him there and make sure you're on time.

You grab your friend's shoulder and point to the straggler. Braccio stares, not comprehending until you grunt and he gets a weird look in his eyes, like he's guilty and angry and sad all at once.

>"We need to help him."
He watches the rest of the crowd start to drift away.
>"... By the Throne- I'd take a lasbolt for you but you saw the way the overseer looked at me yesterday. If I'm late for the pit he'll whip me 'till I stop twitching. I-I can't risk that."
You realize what he means.
>"Braccio, please!"
The other labourers are almost out of sight.
>"Arriand, I-... I'm sorry, but I can't help you."
He turns and runs to catch up with them. You feel really bad that you aren't there with him, but even worse that he didn't stay to help. The God Emperor is watching you. Thinking about your friend now is a waste of time, you can talk about it later. Right now you have work to do. You run over to the limping man and try to grab his arm. He realizes what you're doing and shifts his weight onto his good leg.

>"You're the fool that knocked over yesterday's gravel."
The two of you start to walk, he must be hurting really bad but doesn't show it.
>"Nuh-uh, somebody tripped me and I filled it back up again so-"
He dry heaves, wincing in your grip, and leans heavier on you.
>"You don't have to explain yourself to me. You stopped. No-one else would've done that. Wha's your name then?"
You start to think really hard.
>"Uhh, Unit #5652-"
The man waves his hand.
>"No, I mean your real name. Not that manufactorum-line shit."
You don't know how you feel about him insulting the God Emperor's Imperium's labour efficiency number system but you know what he means.
>"M-my name is Arriand Vunant."
The limping sinner nods.
>"Yeah... I'm Ruhr, Ruhr Nozick."
You stumble in a pothole and he yelps in pain.
>"Ffffffuck. S-so how'd you end up here then?"
You aren't sure what he means by here.
>"The pits, digging rocks and bagging 'em to get blown up."
Now you understand and try really hard to remember.
>"I never knew my dad. Only knew my mom until I was up to her knee, and she brought me to the outside of a manufactorum. Talked to the overseer about something then he handed her something and took me inside and I-... I never saw her again.."
He stays quiet for some time and scowls, gritting yellow teeth.
>"Ain't that a daemon's own luck."
Neither of you talk any more until you reach the gravel pit, just in time for the overseer to start collecting his tally. He doesn't notice that you were the last two to arrive, or maybe he pretends not to. Braccio stares at his feet. Ruhr limps off to his spot on the line-up and whispers.
>"Thanks kid, might've saved my life."

That makes you feel good. You grab the God Emperor's shovel and the work day begins.

You dig long and hard, longer and harder than the others because you truly believe the God Emperor on the Golden Throne on Holy Terra is waiting for you to fill that gravel pile. You think that the blessed overseer is starting to notice how hard you try to dig the God Emperor's gravel for the God Emperor's Imperium, but he doesn't single you out. Braccio doesn't breathe a word and seems to feel guilty about something. Probably about how he left you to carry Ruhr on your own. That was bad and made you feel bad, but you think you forgive him. You wouldn't want to be late for the God Emperor's gravel pit and disappoint the blessed overseer either.

It's mealtime now. You have a ration bar and five whole minutes to eat it. Unless you wanted to split it up or give it to someone else...

>What do you want to do?

Actually making it easier to dig for a day or two sounds fantastic. Everyone will dig better which means the bags will be filled faster, giving us more time to do.... things. Like sleep... or sharpening the shovels. It's a start. We just need to ask if we can sharpen them every two days.
>>
>>4217921
The labourers usually get a mealtime in the middle of every work day, but sometimes the blessed overseer forgets, ration bars are short, or they want to punish negligence by making the labour unit fast and contemplate their failings. Everyone still got to have a mealtime even if it was much later than normal yesterday, but only because of your exceptional performance. Others are starting to notice how hard a worker you are, which could be a good thing or a bad thing.

You haven't eaten a full meal in two work days, three if you don't count the ration bar you shared with Braccio. Your friend has been dead-silent since you woke up. You pat him on the back.
>"It's okay. I'm not mad."
He goes limp, staring at hands that had a ration bar of their own less than two minutes ago.
>"I know but... I left you there for my own damned sake. You could've been whipped!"
You nod.
>"Tha's not important. What matters is that we got here on time and didn't disappoint the God Emperor or blessed overseer."

>Hug pile with Braccio? Would he ok with that?
You'd have to convince him. There's a risk of infection setting in on the cuts from the lashing and only so much room for the blanket. Nighttime conditions are frigid, two Celsius lower and every one without a full-body covering would be at risk of hypothermia. Forcing everyone into a small, cramped building saves on heating costs and is efficient, but there are only so many blankets to go around and pneumonia is uncommon but far from unheard of.
>Awe dang. No exceptional shoveling time?
You'd need a crit or exceptional stats, Strength >= 20 and Agility >= 5.
>Anyway we can increase our dex?
You need to practice. Shoveling the God Emperor's gravel for the God Emperor's Imperium does slowly train your Strength and Agility but not as fast as dedicated training. You're four-tenths of the way toward an improvement in your Agility, crits cause you to gain double or more experience in the relevant stat, while completing tasks provides a small but steady amount of experience. If you keep performing your task well or earn the blessed overseer's favour you may be promoted to moving a wheelbarrow or given a newer shovel.

That could be done, if you weren't required to return the God Emperor's ration bar wrappers so they can be reused to seal more of the God Emperor's ration bars. Causing undue damage to your ration bar is a mild sin, and punishing that wastefulness is part of the duties of the blessed overseer.

You can't watch him shiver like that. You shake Braccio's shoulder and he rolls over.
>"What's going on?"
>"The man who was lashed yesterday is shivering."
>"... What does that-"
>"His name is Ruhr. We need to let him use our blanket."
Your voice sounds desperate but you don't care.
>"Arriand, this blanket is-"
>"His back is still lashed open. H-he might die if we don't."
Braccio looks into your eyes-
>"Please..."
-and something in them makes him give.
>"Okay, I'll make some space... Make sure he sleeps with his back away from us."
>"... Why?"
>"If it isn't and he gets sick there, we would too."
>"Oh."

You lower your head so you don't risk scraping the roof and step over the other sleeping labourers to reach the lashed man. He's shaking but you can't tell if it's from the cold or the pain. You shake his shoulder and he snaps awake, staring with a look of terror that fades a second after he sees it's you.

>"Arriand- What are you doing here?"
You run your fingers through your hair trying to think of a way to explain.
>"Th-there's some space under the God Emperor's blanket we use. Y-you could-"
He looks confused for a second, then intense.
>"Sleep? With you? And-... and a blanket?"
>"Yeah-huh, it's not warm but it's better than the open-"
>"How many of my ration bars you want?"
Now you're confused.
>"I-I don't know what you mean by that, I ju-just thought-"
Ruhr grips you in a hug more strong than you would expect. The man is trembling and you think you hear a faint sobbing sound.
>"Thanks, kid... Giving a man a free spot under a blanket, I've never heard of such."

You help him limp and crawl over to where your friend, then make sure he rolls so his back is facing away from the rest of you. Braccio takes the middle when you insist and you get on the edge. It's a little colder there but Braccio's skinny and you can handle the cold better. You hope Ruhr isn't cold, but there's nothing else you can do. When you wake up for the pre-work prayer, your friend is going through the motions and the limping man, your other friend, you realize, is busy massaging the cuts on his back. They seem shallower and pinker than yesterday. You think that's a good sign. You pray that the God Emperor heals his wounds, even if they happened because he sinned. This time Braccio helps you carry Ruhr and all three of you get to the God Emperor's gravel pit before the blessed overseer takes his tally.

You grab the God Emperor's shovel and the work day begins.

>4 < 6 = Critical Failure!

You wake back up. Your eyes snap open and you stand to grab the God Emperor's shovel so you can return to digging the God Emperor's gravel. The God Emperor's shovel isn't in arm's reach. Someone took it. The blessed overseer is standing there with a stern glare. He brings the whip back and you cower.

>"YOU HAVE DISAPPOINTED ME, UNIT #565288382798144106559. YOU SHOWED PROMISE BUT IT HAS BECOME ABUNDANTLY CLEAR TO ME THAT IF YOU LACK THE CALIBER TO DIG THE GOD EMPEROR'S GRAVEL, YOU ARE NOT WORTHY TO TRANSPORT THE GOD EMPEROR'S GRAVEL."

The reality sinks in. You have failed the God Emperor's Imperium. You are a disgrace in the sight of Holy Terra. You have disappointed the God Emperor on the Golden Throne. More than that, you have let the blessed overseer down. Tears come to your eyes. You try to blink them back but can't.

>"I-I'm so sorry I f-failed you bl-blessed overseer..."
He is unmoved by the choking in your voice.
>"DO YOU KNOW WHY YOU ARE NOT ON THE SANCTIONED LABOUR ENCOURAGEMENT WHIPPING POST, UNIT #565288382798144106559?"
You think for a minute and begin sobbing.
>"I am not worthy to repent."
The blessed overseer pauses. You don't if his glare really softened or you're so desperate for his approval you're seeing things.
>"NO, UNIT ##565288382798144106559. ONLY THE TRAITOR, THE MUTANT, AND THE WITCH ARE BEYOND REPENTANCE AND YOU ARE NONE."
You are openly weeping.
>"Th-then why am I not-"
>"YOU HAVE WHAT NO-ONE ELSE IN YOUR LABOUR UNIT DOES, UNIT #565288382798144106559."
A moment passes while you are deep in thought.
>"A rash on my-"
>"NO, UNIT #565288382798144106559. YOUR MIND IS TOO SMALL FOR DOUBT. YOU HAVE TRUE FAITH AND THERE IS NO LAPSE IN PIETY TO PUNISH."
You aren't so sure what he's saying.
>"Y-you mean I haven't sinned?"
>"YOU HAVE NOT SINNED- BUT YOU HAVE FAILED TO MEET THE DAILY QUOTA AND HAVE LAID IN A COMATOSE STUPOR FOR THREE AND A HALF TERRAN HOURS."
>"Does that mean that-"
>"UNIT #565288382798144106559. YOU WILL LABOUR OVERTIME FOR THREE DAYS OR UNTIL I HAVE DEEMED THAT YOU HAVE DONE ENOUGH TO ATONE. DO NOT FAIL TO DIG THE GOD EMPEROR AND HIS IMPERIUM AGAIN, UNIT #565288382798144106559."
You've not only been forgiven- you're going to be allowed to dig even more of the God Emperor's gravel for the God Emperor's Imperium? Praise the God Emperor! You fall to your knees and can't stop sobbing.
>"Th-thank you bl-blessed overse-se-er."
He lays a hand on your shoulder.
>"DO NOT BOW TO ME UNIT #565288382798144106559. THREE-FOURTHS OF THE WORK DAY HAVE PASSED AND YOU CAN DO NO MORE. RETURN TO YOUR COMMUNAL SLEEPING QUARTERS. GET SOME SLEEP WHILE YOU CAN. YOU WILL BE STAYING IN THE GOD EMPEROR'S GRAVEL PIT TWO HOURS LATER TOMORROW, AND THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW, AND THE NEXT DAY, OR UNTIL YOU HAVE ATONED FOR YOUR FAILINGS."
You nod your head.
>"Sir yes sir, blessed overseer sir!"

>(cont)
>>
>>4220714
You turn to leave and get a few footsteps before the sanctioned labour encouragement whip cracks and throws dust up at your feet. You turn back and the blessed overseer has something in his hand.
>"YOU HAVE FORGOTTEN SOMETHING, UNIT #565288382798144106559."
He presses it into yours and you can't believe what you're-
>"YOU NEVER RECLAIMED YOUR EXTRA MEAL RATION. I KNOW MY SANCTIONED LABOUR ENCOURAGEMENT METHODS ARE HARSH, UNIT #565288382798144106559, BUT I AM A DESIGNATED REPRESENTATIVE OF THE GOD EMPEROR'S IMPERIUM, AND I AM A MAN OF MY WORD. YOU ARE DISMISSED."

The tears run down your face all the way back to the communal sleeping quarters. The communal sleeping quarters are empty and you can hardly believe the blessing you've received. You have another one of the God Emperor's extra ration bars, and the blessed overseer gave it to you! He ordered you to get some sleep and you will because the blessed overseer told you so, but first you need to decide what you're going to do with the God Emperor's ration bar.

>What do you want to do?

>Eat the entire ration bar on your own right now.

You think long and hard. You're tempted to eat the entire ration bar but gluttony is a sin to the God Emperor and your friends need it too. You're so hungry though. You break it in half, eat the smaller part and pray that the God Emperor forgives your wastefulness for fifteen minutes. Sleep comes quickly and there aren't any dreams this time. You are grateful. Ever since the filthy heretics came the only ones you have give you headaches and you can't remember what they were. You hate the filthy heretics because they wasted their lives to abandon the God Emperor's Imperium, and because the blessed overseer told you so. You aren't sure how long it is when you wake up, but Braccio and Ruhr are both underneath the blanket. They must've arrived sometime earlier. You check your hand, there aren't any pockets on the God Emperor's pants, no faithful servant of the God Emperor has any need to hide something from the communal sleeping quarters. To your relief, the other half of the ration bar is still there. You still need to decide who you're going to give it to. Ruhr needs strength to get better from his lashings, but Braccio has been your friend for longer and is always so hungry.

>What do you want to do?

You can practice a hymn instead of praying, as long as it is a sanctioned hymn venerating the glory of the God Emperor, the holiness of the Saints, the power of the Imperium, and the value of hard work. You might annoy your less faithful fellow labourers but that is a small price to pay for praising the glory of the God Emperor, the holiness of the Saints, the power of the Imperium, and the value of hard work.

>>4220938
You think you are around twenty(?) Terran years old. You've been digging the God Emperor's gravel for four Terran years but before that, you hauled loads of the God Emperor's manufactorum goods to the God Emperor's retrieval zones, and before that, you used your small body to unclog ashes from the God Emperor's machinery and occasionally collect the bodies of those who selfishly threw themselves so they could be rendered into the God Emperor's corpse starch.

Before that, everything was dark and cold and your mother always yelled at you because she didn't want to split her ration bars. You never loved your mother as much as you do the God Emperor, but sometimes you wonder if you'll ever see her again. You've been labouring for the God Emperor's Imperium almost as long as you can remember. You are grateful you weren't born on a primitive world and have the chance to serve the God Emperor on Holy Terra.

>>4221022
The roll for your world was everything, if you ended up on a Feral World this would be grug quest: 40k edition, if it was Feudal you'd be a regular serf with everything that entails, if it was a Death World you'd have a bonus to your stats by necessity and likely already be dead thrice over, and so on.

>3 > 1 = Critical Success!

You are a tool of the God Emperor. You give your praise to the Golden Throne. You break your back for Holy Terra. You eat the piece of the ration bar that you saved, but you do not hold it on your tongue or chew and savor the flavour. You crunch and swallow, once, twice, and then it's gone. The ration bar is not food, the ration bar is fuel for the fire burning your weakness away. If you're going to work hard enough that the blessed overseer doesn't notice how slow your friends are, you need to have a stomach as full as you can get it. You imagine the God Emperor's sandbags protecting the God Emperor's Imperial Guard from filthy heretics and think about how it was labourers like you that dug the God Emperor's gravel and filled the God Emperor's bags. You are grateful.

Neither of the others know you had a whole ration bar to yourself. You don't think you're going to tell them. They wake you up and Braccio helps you carry Ruhr. The lashes on his back seem to be getting pinker every day. You think that's a good sign but you don't know if he should be walking on his ankle. It seems to swell a bit more every day. You hope he doesn't lose his foot, that would make it harder for him to walk to the God Emperor's gravel pit. Maybe if you talked to the blessed overseer he could do something to help. The blessed overseer knows everything that a labourer of the God Emperor's Imperium needs to know, you know because the blessed overseer told you so.

You grab the God Emperor's shovel and the work day begins.

For a moment a feeling of dread fills you and leaves you shivering in the cold but you ignore it and dig the God Emperor's gravel until it is buried under the weight of your sacred duty. You move the God Emperor's shovel, you throw the God Emperor's gravel onto the God Emperor's pile. Maybe you'll never know as much as the blessed overseer, maybe you'll never be as smart as your friend, and maybe you'll never understand why there has to be only war, but that doesn't matter. This makes sense. Even if you can't see it, every shovel scoop helps. You know that because the blessed overseer said so. You put your trust in him and instead of picking up a shovel he carries the burden of helping you labour. You don't know what you would do without the blessed overseer.

>16 > 3 = Success!
>4 > 1 = Critical Success!

You eat the entire ration bar and feel no guilt. There is no need to, your intent is pure and your friends can survive better if you take on their digging yourself. You're going to be in the God Emperor's gravel pit for two more hours and the last thing you want is to let the God Emperor and the blessed overseer down again. Braccio pats you on the back, visibly concerned.

>"Arriand, we heard you'll be doing overtime. If you want, I and Nozick can stay, and maybe between the two of us, it could get done fa-"
>"No. The blessed overseer punished me for my weakness. I don't want you to have any part of that."
>"But-"
You put your hand on his shoulder, serious.
>"If you want to help, get as much sleep as you can. You have to be ready for tomorrow. That's all any of us can do."
Your friend looks at his feet, tenses weary shoulders, and gives a resigned sigh.
>"I'll... pray for you."
>"I couldn't ask for anything more."

You praise the God Emperor. You dig the God Emperor's gravel and throw it into the God Emperor's pile, and do it again and again and again until your arms can barely move, then you force them to until you can't feel how much they ache. You don't think about what you're doing, the motions are automatic and unstoppable, you would drop dead before you stopped without the blessed overseer's say-so. The only difference between you and a servitor is that you have faith.

The only desire in your soul is to see the God Emperor's Will be done, one shovel load at a time, and that is what you do. Hours go by and while the other labourers leave, the blessed overseer stays and watches you labour for the God Emperor's Imperium. The sweat on your forehead is running into your eyes but you don't take the time to wipe them. You've done this so many times, the repetition has finally sunk in and it's all become muscle memory. You feel your shovel loads of the God Emperor's gravel are quicker and your toss onto the God Emperor's second pile more precise, but it could be the trick of an overactive imagination.

>Unit #565288382798144106559's Agility has increased from 4 to 5!

What matters is that when the blessed overseer tells your shift is done, there are two full-sized piles of the God Emperor's gravel. You stare blankly, then snap out of it. Your knees are liquid fire, your arms are weighted lead, and your eyes are about to collapse in on themselves, but you have done it. You have atoned.

>Roll 1d6 to see if the blessed overseer deems you have done enough
>>
Rolled 5 (1d6)

>>4221726
So we dug two full piles in two hours. How many piles do we dig up on a normal shift with everyone else on a regular day?

>>4221735
Fuck my dice are cursed. I'm guessing the 1d6 determines how many additional piles or days we need to make?
>>
>>4221735
You didn't dig both piles in two hours, you dug the first in the normal work day then sunk into a fugue and dug the second. Usually there are three piles of the God Emperor's gravel across the God Emperor's gravel pit, one for every ten labourers in your unit and the minimum to meet the quota. Tonight there are four. Most wouldn't labour if the blessed overseer wasn't watching them with his sanctioned whip of labour encouragement, and even then they don't dig half as hard as you do. You've gone above and beyond expectations.
>>
>>4221747
No, it was a Fellowship check to see if the blessed overseer deems you have done enough.
>>
>>4221754
4<5 failure right? From what I know so far his fellowship is the minimum of 4. Fuck its gonna be a while before we can improve that. The Emperor protects.
>>
>>4221765

the overseer loves us. if we work hard enough, we can truly please the overseer.
>>
>>4221735
The blessed overseer watches you with a face so still it looks like it was carved from stone. You hold the God Emperor's shovel and wait for him to speak. He looks at the God Emperor's pile for a long time and then back at you. For a second, you think his eyes are sad.

>"LIVING PERDITION BREEDS ETERNAL PIETY. THE LABOUR OF YOUR DAYS IS NOTHING BEFORE THE PARADISE THAT AWAITS. I EXPECT TO SEE YOU AGAIN TOMORROW, UNIT #565288382798144106559. YOU ARE DISMISSED."

You are grateful to serve the God Emperor's Imperium and do not complain. When you get back to the communal sleeping quarters, you collapse and awaken at the same time everyone else does, with barely half as much sleep. You need to do your pre-work prayer but something occurs to you. Maybe if you practiced and sung a sanctioned hymn, the others would be faithful. You heard the Imperial Temple sings sanctioned hymns all the time. You think there might be something to that. You think you remember a few.

>What do you want to do?
>Complete your designated pre-work prayer time as normal.
>Practice one of the sanctioned hymns you remember.
>(write-in)
>>
>>4221772
>>Practice one of the sanctioned hymns you remember.

before we decide, please, what skill corresponds to this?
>>
>>4221770
One day. I only hope that day is soon.

>>4221772
>Practice one of the sanctioned hymns you remember.
No reason why we should. Practice makes perfect. Would our friends know the all the lyrics? Maybe they could help and correct our mistakes.
>>
>>4221772
>>Practice one of the sanctioned hymns you remember.
>>
>>4221775
Probably this
>>Fellowship: 4: You are blunt, to the point, and uglier than the undersides of most boots to boot, but that doesn't matter much when your only responsibility is to lift and drop heavy objects in the Emperor's Name.
>>
>>4221775
>>4221784
Remembering the lyrics is Intelligence, performing them well is Fellowship. The difficulty of both varies slightly depending on which of the hymns you decide on.

>>4221776
They almost certainly would.

>>4221772
>>Practice one of the sanctioned hymns you remember.
>>(write-in)

>>
>>4221790
Barring a Critical Failure, Arriand will be humming. You wouldn't dare disrupt the sanctity of the pre-work prayer's silence.
>>
>>4221789
>Intelligent: 5: You are the ogryn equivalent of a genius, that is to say you cannot comprehend anything more complicated than the simplest tools and numbers above ten are difficult.
I think it's kinda funny how our Intelligence is higher than our fellowship.

>>4221790
Never heard of getting stabbed "do" death, but owning shanks that could had been recycled is heretical.
>>
>>4221790
>>4221789

and lets do the value of hard work hymn. its the only thing we really understand. we believe in hard work. we do hard work. we want to do hard work. our desire for hard work will lend power to our voice.

fucing up a sacred hymn to the God-Emperor of Man will get us executed no doubt
>>
>>4221794
So we will have to roll a 1d5 (Intelligence) to determine how much we can remember and a 1d4 (Fellowship) for how well we sing? I gotta say this is an interesting system. Where is this from?

Wrong dice. Our int is 5, we dont roll the 1d5. The dice size determines the difficulty and the threshold for success is our skill rating and anything rolled under that at least from what I understand. So if we pick the difficulty 8 song and roll a 3 <5(int) I think that's a success.

Arriand is not the smartest.

>>
>>4221801
To put it gently, you are not the freshest fruit in the bowl. Talking to anyone that isn't a close friend is nerve-wracking and the only reason you're able to speak so candidly to the blessed overseer is that you almost literally idolize him.

>>4221804
I'm using Dark Heresy's stat system and a crude homebrew. You don't have to sing straight away, it might be wiser to practice for a few days and get it down pat ahead of time.

>>4221802
That depends on the degree of the failure and the appraisal of the blessed overseer. Wasting the human resources of the God Emperor's Imperium when they could be lashed and back to meeting quota in a week's time is inefficient. You can practice over the course of a few days to lower the difficulty check.

>>4221810
I was listing the difficulty of the respective hymns, but if you want to take this roll we can. The more complex it is to sing the more it will impress the blessed overseer. You could always ask Braccio to help you, even if he stutters he has a good head on his shoulders.
>>
>>4221823
I still wonder what would be a canonatical reason for his high melee skill. Perhaps he used to kill mutant rats and Squigs that would raise the designated food stockpile when he was younger?

This too, there's a lot of natural talent and no reliance on technique limiting it, only explosive aggression and unrelenting fury. To give you an idea of how good a 19 is, you could handily dispatch most PDF in point-blank range, assuming you were in melee combat. If you ever went off the deep end or snapped, there would be hell to pay.

The reason you stopped killing rats was that you grew too big to crawl in the God Emperor's manufactorum innards. Even if you coughed all the time and had to look out for gears crushing your fingers you think it was a good job and you were good at. You got to eat meat almost every day too. It was rancid and sometimes made your stomach hurt but it filled your stomach. You still feel guilty about them though, they were the snuck off the top even though you were supposed to bring them all back to the blessed manufactorum overseer. Sometimes you wonder if the God Emperor made you grow too big to work to punish you. Some of the others got hunched and skinny so they never got too big and could get into the deepest tunnels. Every now and then you wish you were like that.

>5 > 2 = Success!

If everyone else in the God Emperor's gravel pit dug the God Emperor's gravel as hard as you did, the God Emperor's Imperial Guard would have so many of the God Emperor's sandbags they could use them as pillows. The God Emperor has blessed you with the chance to serve the God Emperor's Imperium and that is what you must do the best you can. You are not a member of the Imperial Temple and the only time you've heard a choir sing was when the voxcasters went off in the God Emperor's manufactorum during Saint's Days. You don't have a singing voice, it sounds more like the God Emperor's gravel than silk, but you have to try. No-one else will do it if you don't. The God Emperor on the Golden Throne is watching over you. The God Emperor's Imperial Guard fighting the filthy heretics are depending on the God Emperor's sandbags. The labourers in your unit need true faith, like the blessed overseer said you have, and only you can bring it to them. The blessed overseer is depending on you to help them meet the God Emperor's quota, and you won't let the blessed overseer down again. You remember the beginning of a hymn. You open your mouth and try to sing-
>"HeeEEEEEEEEIIIIIAAAA-!!!"

You're too nervous. You don't remember the lyrics. The others are staring at you now, the silence of the pre-work prayer is gone. They don't know why you did that. You don't know why you did that. It sounded like you were screaming. A few are glaring. You were full of faith but now you're scared. You wish you had the God Emperor's shovel so you could go back to digging the God Emperor's gravel. You can do that. You know you can. That is easy, not like the hymns where there's a dozen little parts and every single one can go wrong but every single one has to go right or else the God Emperor and the blessed overseer will be disappointed. You need to do better. You have to do- A hand touches your shoulder. You turn and see Braccio. He looks worried.

>"Are- are you okay Arriand? D-did you have one of those night terrors or-"
>"I-I was-... I w-was trying to sing a hymn to the God Emperor."
He looks more worried than before. His eyebrows clench up.
>"Wh-which one?"
You think long and hard.
>"The uh... Th-the Litany of Protection for the Faithful Imperial Citizen."
Ruhr mashes his head down in the blanket. You think you saw him sweating.
>"... That's... th-that's an awful-long one."
>"I know... I want to make the God Emperor and the blessed overseer proud."
You really mean that. It's the only thing in the galaxy you care about beside your friends.
>"Arriand. ..The God Emperor only wants you to do everything you can. He-... ehn... He thinks the little things done right mean more than the big ones done wrong. Wh-why don't you start with something smaller?"
>"Like what?"
Your friend scratches the back of his head.
>"Like, oh what was it..."
He snaps his finger.
>"Oh, God Emperor. Yeah, tha's it!"
>(cont)

>>4223227
You think about it for a minute. Back on the assembly-belts of the God Emperor's manufactorums, they would sing something that went like that. It started out sort of like... Oh. You think you know the hymn you need to sing. Braccio helps remind you of the lyrics and between his advice and what you remember, you piece together a hymn. It's a very short one and doesn't rhyme much, but it's easy to sing along to and makes you feel good. The pre-work prayer time is over but it's almost like the God Emperor talked to you. So many things are complicated and confusing and-... and corrupt, you know that last one because the blessed overseer told you so, but the hymn... Thinking about the God Emperor on the Golden Throne listening to the hymn makes you feel warm inside. The hymn is pure. Even though you know the lyrics, you haven't practiced once. Should you try to make the God Emperor proud or should you dig like you always do?

>4 > 1 = Critical Success!
>16 > 7 = Success!

You plant your shovel into the God Emperor's gravel pit and cast your head down. Your fellow labourers have the God Emperor's shovels and begin to dig the God Emperor's gravel. You haven't moved in a minute. You can feel the blessed overseer watching you. It is time. You clear your throat, lift the shovel above your waist, and sunder the earth with the humble fury of a man who only has his faith. In the same second, you feel calm, your worries are gone, and the lyrics are so clear you can almost see them.
>"OH, GOD EMPEROR!"
The God Emperor's gravel pit goes deathly still. Everyone stops what they're doing and turns to you. They may criticize you or laugh at you or even hurt you, but you do not care. Only the God Emperor can judge you and your life is his to keep.
>"OVERSEER-"
You dig, howling in fervor-
>"WHO MAKES-"
You scoop a load, singing the praises-
>"ALL THINGS-"
You toss it onto the pile, filled with rapture-
>"RIGHT!"
The blessed overseer is struck silent.
>"WHOSE POWER-"
Some of the others have let go of the God Emperor's shovels. You will dig for them.
>"NONE-!"
Your ears are almost wringing from the shout, but that only inspires you to sing louder.
>"CAN RESIST!"
The God Emperor's gravel is flung onto the God Emperor's pile. Your voice softens, cracking with earnest devotion as you beseech the God Emperor, but it is a powerful calm that touches every ear in the God Emperor's gravel pit and some nearby.
>"GRANT ME THE STRENGTH-"
You take two of the God Emperor's shovel loads in a single strike, digging and tossing in a single motion.
>"TO DEFEAT THINE ENEMIES!"
The heretic, the witch, the mutant in their wretched multitudes- they are nothing but gravel beneath the God Emperor's shovel.
>"GRANT ME THE WILL-"
The Enemy comes from all angles. They are stronger than you, smarter than you, and mightier than you in every way, but you have what they can never take. Faith. You are a sandbag in the path of Holy Terra. You will die in the service of the Golden Throne. You will praise the God Emperor with your dying breath.
>"TO DEFEAT-"
Come the traitor, come the alien, you will bury the God Emperor's shovel in the God Emperor's ground and you will stand firm. If you fall, a thousand more will rise. The God Emperor's Imperium will never be broken.
>"THE BEAST!"
You throw the God Emperor's gravel into the God Emperor's pile. There is only the sacred hymn and the holy task you have been given. Nothing else matters.
>"FROM YOUR GRACE-"
You lift the God Emperor's shovel over your head, holding it firm in a single, scarred hand and you could almost swear that, for the faintest moment while everyone's eyes were on the rusted blade, a glint of sunlight shone.
>"I SHALL KNOW NO FEAR!"
You slam the God Emperor's shovel into the God Emperor's ground so fiercely that a cracking noise rings across the God Emperor's gravel pit. You hit a rock and broke it in two.
>(cont)
>>
>>4223407
The God Emperor's Will be done. You start to sing again, every bit as fiercely as before. The others pause and the blessed overseer is at a loss for words, until Ruhr's shaky voice rises high as he begins to dig.
>"Oh, God Emperor-!"
Braccio recovers from his shock, and piles in, scooping more of the God Emperor's gravel.
>"Overseer Who Makes All Things Right!"
You can't believe it, but a few other labourers start to sing along and together, their hushed whispers turn to a roaring din.
>"Whose Power-!"
More join in, throwing themselves into the God Emperor's gravel with a drive they didn't have before.
>"N O N E C A N R E S I S T!"
Your voice is leading them, loud and furious, filled with zeal, because to love the God Emperor is to hate the Enemy,
>"G R A N T M E T H E S T R E N G T H!"
You know this, in the deepest truest part of your soul,
>"T O D E F E A T T H I N E E N E M I E S!"
Because the blessed overseer told you so.
>"G R A N T M E T H E W I L L!"
In the galaxy there may be only war,

The blessed overseer has dropped his sanctioned whip of labour encouragement. His eyes are wet and the tears flow down his face. He does not move, but he has been moved. You are not happy and you will not be- not until the God Emperor's gravel has been thrown onto the God Emperor's pile and the daily quota of the God Emperor's Imperium has been met in full. This time when you stay for the next shift, you aren't alone.

>16 > 2 = Success!

You dig the God Emperor's gravel, you throw it into the God Emperor's pile, you worship the God Emperor. When the God Emperor's shovel in your hands pierces the God Emperor's gravel pit, it is next to half a dozen more. You dig for the God Emperor. They dig for the God Emperor. Humanity digs for the God Emperor, and soon, they will reach the Golden Throne.

The work day is done. You never took a ration bar but you feel more full than you've ever been. You wipe the sweat from your brow and return the God Emperor's shovel to its rightful place in the God Emperor's shovel rack. The others do, too. You still stutter, you're still slow with words, and you're still nervous, but something about the hymn reached them. They look at you in a different way now. You know deep down that from now on, they will work harder for the God Emperor. You return to the communal sleeping quarters and pull the thin blanket over your body. It isn't quiet any more. You can hear humming. Tomorrow is the last shift of your punishment, and you know you won't let the blessed overseer down.

We've outlived millions of PDF and guardsmen. Absolute legend. So when is the second thread?
>>
I know I said I was going to end it when we reached #400 posts but I don't think there is a possible better place to end the first thread. I will post 40k Imperial Citizen Quest #2 sometime tomorrow, in the meantime feel free to use this thread to ask me any questions you have about the quest setting/mechanics, Arriand's personal thoughts, his backstory, or anything he would know in character. I'm glad you all like the writing, telling 40k from the perspective of a mentally disabled but hard working man has felt a hundred times more compelling than anything I've ever done for a Space Marine. I hope you all like the quest. Unless the Planetary Defense Force is absolutely ferocious, the gravel pit will not stay constant, keeping Arriand and his friends alive and pure in the coming months will take cunning, careful planning, and above all else, the God Emperor's blessing.

Good night anons. I can't wait to get the next thread going.

>>4223431
Thread #2 should come out sometime tomorrow. I'm going to be extremely busy so I won't make any guarantees, but I swear by the Golden Throne that it will be at the absolute latest the day after tomorrow.
>>
>>4223438
Emperor's blessings Overseer. I will wait with rapt attention for the next chapter of this quest. I think the saying applies "sometimes less is more". Where as a Space Marines is someone far greater than any person with thousands of years worth of knowledge that would need to be elaborated on, a regular human is much more similar and relatable. I don't know I feel like I'm spouting idiocy, but this quest was awesome.

As far as questions go, how good is Arriand at cooking rats? Does he know to gut them first, or does he just toss the whole thing onto a super hot pipe to burn the fur off before eating it? I'd like to know how proficient Arriand the master rat chef is at cooking rodent like creatures.

That's true. There's definitely that underdog aspect too, if a squad of Space Marines are no match for a swarm of Giganobs, what chance does a single man have?

>As far as questions go, how good is Arriand at cooking rats? Does he know to gut them first, or does he just toss the whole thing onto a super hot pipe to burn the fur off before eating it?
Arriand knows that the fur on the rats didn't taste too good but he lacked a knife and proper education, so he simply stripped the fur, skin and all, from the carcasses before eating them. He also has a vague idea that burning food is something he was supposed to do but didn't have sufficient access to any water source clean enough to not defeat the entire purpose. The guts were stringy, chewy, and occasionally crunchy in a way he found pleasing, but he preferred the tail because the cleanup to avoid getting lashed by the blessed manufactorum overseer for wasting protein that should've gone into the manufacture of the God Emperor's ration bars wasn't as difficult.

>Is Segmentum Tempestus really that bad off, or is it due to the fact it's a Death World?
Segmentum Tempestus has relatively little Chaos corruption, but what Xenos are there tend to be more widespread and aggressive. That it's a Death World doesn't help. Of course, if anon has one-in-a-thousand (assuming optimal conditions) genetic code, a chapter of Space Marines decide to use the Death World as a location for recruiting, and he has the luck to be noticed, athleticism to pass their grueling trials, and strength of will to survive the implantation process afterward, he can look forward to decades, potentially centuries of purging the xenos and the heretic in the God Emperor's Name.

>You posted several picks of shovels, but I gotta be sure. Are the shovels sharp all around, or do they have those foot rest things you can use to push your foot down on to dig up dirt easier?
The God Emperor's shovels do have the foot rest, but only because it's a standard issue from the STC unearthed half a segmentum from your planet little over four millennia ago. Recently, some labourers have taken to keeping the whole length of the God Emperor's shovel blade sharpened, to prevent others from disarming them as easily in the event of an ambush or (possibly heretical) worker's riot.

Segmentum Obscurus is the one with lot of Chaos problem thanks to the Eye of Terror and as such is teeming with inquisitors.

Segmentum Tempestus is actually not that bad in the grand scheme of things, seeing that majority of the Lore happens in either Segmentum Ultima or Segmentum Obscurus.

Segmentum Pacificus did however have a few really big crusades and stable warp travel.

Only thing I know about Segmentum Tempestus is that the Inquisitor Martyr game takes place there and that it's supposed to not have so much chaos.

Granted, if you treat Inquisitor Martyr as Canon, then there's an absolute madlad of an Inquisitor roaming in this segmentum chewing armies of Drukhari, Eldar, Tyranids, Heretic Astartes, Demons and Cultists.
Not Orks though because they didn't get around adding those into the game as an enemy.

Despite the quarantine, uni has not relented and my finals are imminent. I haven't slept in two days, three minor projects are due by midnight today, and I'm going to be going unconscious for the next six hours or so and getting some breakneck work done when I wake. I will be starting the second thread and answering everyone's posts once I have some breathing room close to midnight, I got 75% of the way through but accidentally deleted the textbox and lost the explanation of the mechanics I'll be using to determine how the world's defense against the filthy heretics fares, and failed a Willpower check to get the resolve to rewrite the explanation at the time. Also, a friend of mine let me know and I figured I ought to inform any of you that happen to be PCfags: Total War: Shogun 2 is currently free to download on Steam. Willpower is a broad summary of how resistant someone's mind is toward outside influence and internal weakness, not how dedicated they are to their cause, though there is a correlation. Much of the reason for Arriand's devotion to the God Emperor is that he internalized the indoctrination from a young age, though whether that's good or bad depends on your own faith in the God Emperor, you filthy heretic perspective.

To improve Willpower you need to cultivate mental strength, and the easiest way to do that is genuine prayer, although meditating on the glory of the God Emperor, practicing hymns to the holiness of the Saints, and proselytizing to your fellow labourers to the power of the God Emperor's Imperium are all adequate means of training, as are more extreme displays of devotion such as charity, fasting, or even self-flagellating if you have the stomach for them. You're already extremely close to gaining a level, actively deciding on what to pray about can slightly speed the process.

>>4223541
The unsanctioned modification of the God Emperor's shovel is tech-heresy and if discovered, you will receive due punishment for desecrating the tools of the God Emperor's Imperium. However, if you speak to the blessed overseer and receive permission to do so for the sake of better labouring in the God Emperor's Name, you may modify the God Emperor's shovel within the reasonable limits dictated by the blessed overseer, as long as the intake of the quota is not slowed, stalled, or otherwise adversely effected.

>>4223919
This is correct, to the best of my knowledge. Segmentum Pacificus isn't a misnomer, but only relative to the rest of the galaxy in the grim darkness of the 41st millennium.

>>4225261
You aren't sure what Braccio did before joining your labour unit in the God Emperor's gravel pit. You think he is somewhere between sixteen and eighteen Terran years old, but you aren't good with numbers and delayed development from malnutrition is not uncommon in Xillion V.

>>4225793
The PDF is relatively well-equipped, but it is arrayed against a minor WAAAAAGH, no less than three Chaos Cults competing to corrupt the world's underbelly, and sporadic raids from an indeterminate number of Dark Eldar. At the moment they are pure and have a much larger number of resources to throw at their opposition, but munitions alone can only keep Orks from exiting the feral stage and, while executing suspicious swathes of the population is more than possible, they think the worship of Chaos hasn't spread widely enough to warrant the ensuing loss of productivity. There is almost nothing that can be done to counter the Dark Eldar with their current resources, but their grand impact is thankfully minimal. The best thing you can do is pray to the God Emperor they don't decide to strike your labour unit's region.

>(cont)
>>
>>4233579
>>4225793
Regarding the actual mechanics, I've assembled a crude "grid" of 30 regions on Xillion V, each with their own industrial output, PDF garrison, and loyal population. 3 of these regions are currently hosting separate Chaos Cults, and 1d4 of them are currently in conflict with low-tier Orks. Every thirty in-game days, I'll roll to see how well each of the factions progress, catalog the results, and then save them (along with the grid) into a text doc I'll be sharing if/when Arriand has met his end, hopefully martyred in honor of the God Emperor.

>>4227204
You think your friend's leg is doing okay since he can walk on it, but it's also blotchy and he says not to worry but you don't think his ankle is supposed to be that shade of yellowish-red. You hope it won't have to be amputated, there aren't many of the God Emperor's shovel handles spare to function as prosthetic legs.

Regarding the region that we occupy in Xillion V, is there a chance that our gravel output might help in at the very least a minimum amount if we shovel hard enough?

Will you link the next thread here?
>>
>>4233582
>Recently, some labourers have taken to keeping the whole length of the God Emperor's shovel blade sharpened, to prevent others from disarming them as easily in the event of an ambush or (possibly heretical) worker's riot.
Here's my idea. If we're allowed to modify the shovel, we'll sharpen all sides to make it extra lethal, but we'll also make a foot blade guard attachment for when we need to use it like a regular shovel.
>>
>>4233658
>Regarding the region that we occupy in Xillion V, is there a chance that our gravel output might help in at the very least a minimum amount if we shovel hard enough?
The God Emperor's gravel pit that you privileged to dig with the God Emperor's shovel is one among thousands, and you are one of thousands assigned to meeting its quota in the name of the God Emperor's Imperium. Barring multiple promotions, a vast gain in mental stats, and an overhaul of the excavating infrastructure or sanctioned methods of labour encouragement, there is no possibility a single, unaugmented human could make an impact on the macro-scale. That does not matter, because on the micro-scale you and your fellow labourers have filled hundreds of the God Emperor's sandbags with the God Emperor's gravel, and without your hard work, a distant battalion of PDF would be forced to do without in their ongoing war against the Xenos and the Traitor.
