‘’Two copper Fhaars. This is your first seasonal allowance as a neophyte of our shrine, Khe. Blah, blah, blah. Mother Dehmte speaks too much. Good thing you won’t be around her for the next two days with the Greater Lunar Solstice happening. You’ve been waiting for those golden days for months! The Holy City bustling with fascinating people from all over the provinces! Exotic foods! Glistening wares of gold and silver! Action! Adventure!

And above all, no scrubbing dirty shrine floors until dusk.

‘’…Khe? Are you listening?’’ The holy woman sighs. ‘’Just- don’t get into trouble, alright?’’

She dismisses you with a wave of her hand.

Finally, freedom! But to do what exactly? Visit your friend Mejtet at her tavern? Explore the main square as traders are setting up shop? Buy those earrings you so desperately wanted at Valmet’s boutique? You don’t know!

Where should you start?

‘’Eh? You’re out already? Uwaa, you priestesses have it so easy.’’

Even if she is glad to see you, Mejtet looks exhausted. And she must be, the little tavern she works at is overflowing with soldiers. Even the terrace is full. They laugh and loudly talk like soldiers do. Very lively.

‘’…Look I still have to work until Sitmi comes in and right now there’s no free table for you to sit at.’’ Your friend seems to have less energy than usual, and she usually has very little. ‘’So you either pick a tray and help me out or pass by later when my shift is over. Sorry, Khe.’’

You don’t feel like playing waitresses again, you’ve worked at this dinky tavern all of last year. And it’s the Greater Lunar Solstice! You destiny awaits! Stars align themselves for Khe, you can feel it in your heart. You just wish those stars could align themselves a little for Mejtet… Blegh, now you’re considering helping her. Should you?

You quickly dismiss the idea of being a waitress again, even for an evening. It’s the Greater Lunar Solstice after all! Only happens once every 6 years! No one will get it the way of your festive spirit, not even Mejtet. Maybe you could teach her to laugh a little...?

--

What started out as a prank quickly turned into something else. Those soldiers were funny! They knew jokes you could never come up with and made you laugh until your stomach hurt. They sang and drank and told wild tales of battles and hunts, some plainly fabricated but others truly captivating. The warriors obviously appreciated your company too, as their rowdiness grew bolder every time you laughed. Wine flowed until you forgot what the point of it all was.

Eventually they left for some assignment they were all curiously silent about. After graciously paying for their food and drinks, the oldest turned to you.

‘’Khe, remember this! We are the Fifth Lions of Ujarak. If trouble finds you, ask for us at the south gate!’’

You briefly wonder if he'll remember saying this tomorrow morning, seeing how inebriated the man was. You too, for that matter.

Aren't you forgetting something?

‘’Yeah, you always get carried away. I just wish you’d put yourself in other people’s shoes sometimes.’’

‘’Ever since you became a priestess…’’

Mejtet angrily places the blue ceramic cups on her tray. Clearly she’s going to stay mad over this whole thing for a while, but you’re not worrying too much. It’s Mejtet. Staying mad is too expensive energy-wise for her.

Besides, it’s the Greater Lunar Solstice! No time for quarrels, right?

‘’You’re right, and you better make up for this. I’m not paying one Faars tonight.’’

You both keep cleaning up the tavern, in silence. Even if you could find the words, you're drunk enough that they'd just come out slurred. A very boring Greater Lunar Solstice first evening indeed, until a wet thing brushes past your ankle and lets out the weakest, most profoundly miserable ‘’miaou’’ you’ve ever heard.

‘’Oh, Zamhur! I’m sorry, I forgot about you!’’

Mejtet rushes to her old cat and picks him up. A mistake. Having the stinky cat so close to your face makes you instantly wretch. Worse still, all that sweet wine the soldiers gave you comes pouring out, covering both your friend and her pet.

She stands still, silent. Gazing into nothingness.

‘’…You know what? I think I’m going to sit this one out.’’ Mejtet sighs. ‘’I’ve had enough for one day.’’

No! The sun only just set, the festivities are about to truly begin! She can’t miss out on the food and fireworks and games just because she got a bit dirty. That just won’t do.

‘’I’m sure Mr. Zamhur is tired too, right?’’ She gestures to get the cat’s attention but he stays put, either too old or too traumatized to care.

Upbeat music begins to reverberate through the streets of Zyansharra. This is it, you’ve got to lift her spirits up!

‘’Ugh… I’m so tired. Ever since Athynar and me broke up I don’t seem to have the energy to do anything. You know he used to[…]’’

Oh. Oh no. She’s starting to talk about her ex again, situation is about to be critical unless you do something now.

The city of Zyansharra is electric on this Greater Lunar Solstice night and turns out to be every bit as magical is you hope it to be. Every porch and gallery is decorated with gramseed oil lamps covered with purple rice paper, adorned with written blessings to all gods and spirits. Each street is as colourful as the next and festively decorated banners and garlands and flower wreaths. Flower petals floating in every canal. This is what you were waiting for! Crowded streets and balcony of laughing and singing people!

This overwhelmingly festive setting even seems to uplift you barmaid friend a little. And while she is still the same Mejtet, the crowded merchant stalls of the main road lights a little flame in her. It has been forever since you saw her get excited. And there’s reason to be: every table is packed full with crafts, pelts and glittering wares.

‘’Ooh! Look at this one, Khe.’’

Your friend picks up a fairly simple necklace from the table she was inspecting and holds it to her breast.

‘’How does it look? I want it!’’

The little necklace is nothing special. It is well made, sure, and the material has an interesting hue, but despite its blandness it really seems to make the uncharacteristically happy barmaid glow. An overdressed man then notices Mejtet and quickly interrupts. ‘’This one is crafted from rare alchemical copper imported from overseas. It has strong healing properties, and should make you healthier if you wear it every day! And I’m only asking for one Faar for it, it’s a steal!’’

You doubt the healing stuff is true, but Mejtet fixes you, excitedly waiting for an answ--

‘’They already look healthy to me, merchant! No need for your stupid trinkets.’’

City guards, three of them. They reek of ale and get uncomfortably close to you.

‘’Satme priestesses huh?’’ The hairiest one lifts your chin. ‘’Is what they say true? That your shrines are less shrines than whore houses?’’ He laughs.

‘’I wouldn’t mind praying with you two then.’’ Another one slurs. ‘’Come walk with us, we know good places to be.’’

‘’As she said.’’ Mejtet speaks coldly. ‘’Fuck off.’’

They are unbearably close, and the dense festive crowd doesn’t help. The music and laughter swirls in a suffocating tide around you. Of course the merchant is nowhere to be found, having slipped away to avoid dealing with the rowdy town guards.

‘’Let’s go, Khe.’’ She quickly puts down the necklace. And you are eager to comply, however the closest guard abruptly takes a hold of you.

‘’Don’t play coy you little whore.’’ He hurts you. ‘’I know what you Satme priestesses do behind closed doo—‘’

‘’Anzhyr! They said they knew the Fifth Lions, what the hell are you doing?!’’ The guard turns his head towards his friend, but his answer is cut short by Mejtet’s fist. While not strong enough to really hurt him, it’s enough of a shock to let you go.

‘’I think we lost them. I can’t see their stupid helmet amongst the crowd.’’

Having ran through crowds and back alleys until your legs gave up, you are both exhausted and panting. But safe? Maybe?

‘’I can’t believe you kicked him in the crotch.’’ After a faint smile, Mejtet and sits next to you. ‘’These town guards are all assholes. Every last one of them.’’

‘’Are you okay?’’

Of course you’re not okay. Your whole body hurts, your ears ring and you feel as if your head is about to explode. You can’t find words good enough to express all of this, but soon it doesn’t matter.

Mejtet hugs you tightly in this damp little alley and won’t let go.

--

‘’I think you would be safer at my place. I know those Lions guys said they’d help you but I don’t trust them anymore than the guards.’’

Sleeping at her place means going back where your first encounter with the guards happened, which doesn’t exactly sounds like a good plan to you right now. But then again, staying with Mejtet does. Maybe you could sneak her in the cloister? Even though it’s forbidden to bring outsiders in, she is wearing priestess garb right now. No one should notice. The south gate isn’t all that far either, she doesn’t trust the Lions but you do.

It takes some effort to convince Mejtet to follow you home, to the cloister. After one short hug, you both dive back into the crowd and make haste.
--
The streets are less crowded here, which somehow make you feel safer. Being away from the cacophony of laughs and music makes it seems as if you’re waking up from a dream.

he two of you finally reach the cloister arch which is, to your surprise, empty. You expected sister Xhan to greet people, even at this hour. You even made plans to bribe her into letting Mejtet in.

‘’Something wrong, Khe?’’

You subtly take a peek inside. The cloister isn’t all that spacious, its small interior garden cut in half by a straight path leading to the main shrine, living quarters on each side. Still no sight of anyone.

Welp, Xhan probably took a walk, being on greet duty is incredibly boring after all.

A swift strut gets you to your room and you both let out a sigh of relief. Mejtet enters first and you would have immediately followed if not for a faint glimmer escaping from the ajar temple doors. Strange, they should be closed for the night.
