In the Emptiness of empty space,
brews an erstwhile ancient race.

In that void of voids has always waited,
an endless stomach never sated,
an unthing blind, and dumb, and most divine.
that bears a never yet thought sign.

Unconceived, but holy all the same
lies upon its corpse an empty name.

Thadoz

Welcome back to Eldritch evo!
Last thread, which happened in unknown, ancient eons: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive/3083697/#p3083697

The Setting:

There is something strange about planet SII-2453-0. Having exited a period of prolonged volcanic activity, life has emerged in its unlit oceans, first plants, then herbivores, then scavengers and carnivores. This fact alone is not yet strange, but coupled with the fact that SII-2453-0 is a Rogue planet, receiving scarcely enough light from the far away stars to facilitate the faintest glow upon its surface, it makes for quite the oddity.

It appears that the energy the plants consume and that keep the planet at an acceptable temperature for life comes not from the stars, but from within. Something lies within that planet, something that craddles its molten core, and which gives off an energy unlike any other in the known universe.

The thing was dramatically dubbed 'It-that-dwells-bellow', and the energy it sent out 'Null Light', on account of its particles sharing many qualities with photons, though its visible spectrum is very limited. The plants on SII-2453-0 have learned to synthesize it, and pass it on to the food chain they are at the bottom of. Soon however, the peculiar energy manifested itself in peculiar ways, and quickly, the wildlife takes advantage of these new powers in their evolutionary struggle..

Pdf related is the dossier of the surviving organisms from last thread.

How to play:
• Open an image of a species in MS Paint, or your editor of choice
• Make one evolutionary change to that species (try to turn off anti-alialising when drawing)
• Save as .PNG!
• Post your new species in the thread with a description of what evolution you've added and why.
• Details indicating what the generation of your species is important. Please indicate. (Base Organisms are Generation 0)
• Details regarding a creatures size or name aren't necessary, but are encouraged.
• Nothing too outlandish. Anything incredibly silly or outlandish will not be considered a canon species 95% of the time.
• Between evolutions using 'Null Light' (see bellow) any given ID should try to make at least one evo without it. This is not a hard and fast rule, but it's a suggestion meant to prevent power creep.

Notes:
• Unless stated explicitly, no species ever goes extinct. Old species can still evolve, even if they're not on the latest "chain"
• Try to make your evolutions gradual and realistic in biological standards.
• This includes 'supernatural' evolutions, which must flow naturally from what has been established before, just as normal evolutions would. It is not permissible to just say 'and now they can shoot lightning' without internally and evolutionarily consistent explanation.
• From time to time I will update an Phylogeny Chart so you can track your progress
• Also from time to time, random world events will occur
• Rules for Extinction will be supplied with extinction events

Supernatural stuff:

• NULL LIGHT is the source of everything supernatural in this evo game. It can be converted into usable energy through photosynthesis and is passed on when the plant is eaten.
• There are so far TWO known effects of Null Light ingestion: Generation/Access to pocket dimenstions and The physical manifestation of consciousness (rudimentary as it may be) as ectoplasma. Pocket dimensions are generally corossive for biological matter in them. Ectoplasma is a white, gooey substance slightly lighter than water which flows freely in conscious beings and quickly decomposes into Null Light when no longer in a living organism. Ectoplasm is the material side of the consciousness coin.
• Most evos utilize these strange abilities. Utilize them and evolve their use as you evolve your creatures!
• DON’T make up unrelated magic powers. The idea of the game is to evolve supernatural abilities, not invent new ones without evolution. If you do add supernatural stuff out of nowhere, your evo will not be counted.

There might be beings on Thadoz driven by several emotion, such as fear, anger or hunger, due to their evolved neural networks. The Hsmyx however is only driven by a single impulse: to Consume.

Some Hsmyx evolve multiple sets of vents. This allows for a more efficient release of excess heat and pressure. Sure, It also means that the metabolism is less efficient as more nutrients manage to escape through the vents before being captured by the Hsmyx. But in return it offers to main advantages: It allows for large amounts of rock and organic matter to be processed by the organism. It also allows for the Hsmyx to get much larger without an increased risk of exploding on itself (heightening the size bar before the Hsmyx explodes.)

Some Irrinocts evolve a strange mutation, their null-light sensitive organ somehow reversing its function. Instead of taking in null-light, the organ uses null light stored within the organism to quickly create "bright" flashes of null light.

However, as its predators are mostly blind to both kinds of light, this flash serves a purpose other than to blind. The intense flash of null-light functions much as blowing air at a candle distrupting ectoplasm in front of the Irrinoct. This momentarily leaves the saggeth species without propulsion until they are able to create enough to once again start moving. This creates a window of opportunity for the Irrinoct to burrow into the sand or make a run for it.

As this flashing is very energy intense, it can only be used between long periods of recharging, the speed of which in part being determined by how well fed the Irrinoct is.

Also, it evolves a dope ass hue that is less reflective of null light.

The Jaw Irrinoct now eat the Saggeth they stun, using eight muscular jaws to rip the unlucky hunter apart. The Saggeths only comprise a small portion of the creature's diet, though, and most nutrients still come from carrion, which is much easier to eat with a jaw as well.

>mundane event - lovally positive

Over the millenia, as the atmosphere of SII-2453-0 continued to be refined by the organisms living on it, larger plants began to sprout up and form vast ecosystems, sometimes even visible from space. One such ecosystem are the immense Clinging Thyrius mats developing around the Obsidian pillars. They offer an immense amount of plant matter for the many herbivores on the planet, most of which are either unbothered by,or reasonably well defended against carnivores. Thus, the Thyrius mats offer immense growth for herbivores and plants alike.

However, with the Blue Pangla-Shrubs forming a symbiosis with green mold, the production of arcane sugar on the obsidian pillars has skyrocketed, and the sweet and deadly nectar seeps into the water and the Thyrius that dwell on it. Arcane Sugar, that divious substance which possesses microportals on the molecular level and thus corrodes from the inside whatever consumes it, is thus a common and early death for herbivores around the obsidian pillars, their numerous corpses sinking down into the unholy depth of the sea, forming vast cemetaries on the ocean ground and leaving nothing but their souls behind which, trapped under the canopy of Thyrius leafs, disipate into null light and are then absorbed by those very leafs.

Effects: New ecosystems:
>Thyrius mat
and
>Windleaf savannha

Scavangers and detrivores on and under the Thyrius Mat and on the obsidian pillars may now grow up to 4 times their size in a single evolution.

Herbivores can now find enough food on land for a terrestrial lifestyle without moving in-land to grasland.

Also Carnivores of any kind may grow up to 3 times their size on Flesh, because of course that would be a thing.

Gurocites begin a new phase of existence. Unable to survive outside the bay of flesh, at least on their own, they adapt.

Host organisms allow a Gurocite to EXIST, and EXPERIENCE. For now, the lifecycle of an infected organism is simply to live out the mostly normal existence it has, before returning to the bay of flesh and turning inside out to spawn more Gurocites, with slight...differences. Little gifts from their host species. Any Gurocite that does not return to the bay before their life cycle is over, spawns too far away from the bay, and their spawn are doomed.

hey, sorry to be annoying but i just joined in. Do we have to speicify where the species we create lives? And how are generations calculated?
>>

Welcome!

generations are calculated by first in thread. So if you are evolving something from here >>4176902
it is gen 1 and if you are evolving something already being evolved it's that gen + 1. This is just for me to do phylogenic charts. you don't have to do it.

>Do we have to speicify where the species we create lives
A general habitat would be nice. It is for example important to know if it lives in the water or on land. It's enough to just say "in the ocean" or "on the ocean floor" or whatever. But to say where exactly on the world map is optional, it's up to you.
>>
>>4178892
Yes you need to specify where they live. The generation of a creature is one higher then the creature it evolved from.

the art is perfectly fine, as long as there is no anti aliasing, I'm happy.

here are a few things for the future though:
1. link the evo you are evoing off of and 2. make smaller evo jumps. in one evo you: got rid of two pairs of legs, introduced dimorphism, gave the females completely new organs and a new social structure. Doing no more than about half of that would normally be prefered. That way, evolution happens gradually and everybody has the opportunity to steer it into different directions.

This evo is perfectly legal though. Welcome aboard.

posting the event early to encourage some more posting.

Slow and almost unnoticable changes in the planet's distribution of warm currents, in large part due to the influx of Hysmx burning organic and inorganic matter alike, lead to a slight decrease in pole ice. This does little to change the ice cap's shores, but it does take a few yards off its highest peaks.
And there, on both poles, structures emerge, strange structures of a kind that any outside observer onto SII-2453-0 would have difficulties to even describe. What can be said most certainly about them is that in many relevant ways, they are shaped like a pyramid. What can also be said however, is that in many very disturbing ways, they are not. For while four lines do indeed go to a point from a square base, this is only half the story. The euclidian explanation of the pyramid, and of the warped spikes surrounding them, ignores the way corners do not behave as one would expect them to when turning them, how angles seemingly impossibly extend over 360 degrees, how one could walk through an entrance and end up not on its other side, but compeltely removed from it. The non-eucledian space in the pyramids is such that any two locations there may be connected no matter their apparent distance, as a line ceases to be the shortest distance between two points.
And sometimes, most curiously, a creature may crawl through a crack in the pyramid at the north pole, only to emerge in that of the south pole..

It is a common occurrence for two Hoya Ants to situate the exits of their portal-stomaches way too close to each other, and end up accidentally sharing each other's food. They have started to catch on to such events, and developed large neural clumps in their stomach region. By rubbing their heads together, two Hoya Ants can engage in "communication", using a series of tactile inputs to exchange the positional data of their portals, which they then send to their nerve clumps in order to "synchronize" their portals and share their stomach. Sometimes, a whole hive may only have one portal-stomach between them all!

Inside tthe bulb they host a lump of sweetmold. The bulb gains extra aracane sugar from the colony and in echange it receives a share of the nutrition from the Pangla shrub. To put it simply, the bulb is the middle man in this relationship, collecting and receiving the majority of nutrition and managing the mold by deciding how much of a share it gets and how much the Pangla receives.

The pyramid bloths evolved from pillar bloths that left their rocky plains in search of new food sources after their original habitats grew overpopulated by predators and other, more evolved, herbivores. After finding the pyramid in the ice caps, the area’s strange physics and abundance of moss facilitated the development of additional mouths, used to reduce the time required to harvest food and make them less vulnerable to the stalkers’ assaults. For the purpose of digging up the earth, a new caste has been made: that of the tunneler, whose only purpose is to dig the earth and slash the hive’s enemies when necessary. They have no mouths, only receiving their nutrients from the shared stomach.

The Hoya ants experience a schism: two variants form. One of them are the legionary ants, who don’t have a fixed home but instead roam their plains consuming everything in their path. Their ants are slightly larger and their matriarchs much more prolific than the anthill variant.

"Thirty white horses on a red hill,
First they champ,
Then they stamp,
Then they stand still." was once said some-when or was it some-where but no one knows here in this world its just known, but here the riddle is true both the riddle itself and the answer it gave, for upon the hill stands horses of teeth and bone they champ they stamp and they chomp and paint the hills "red" with blood of there kills before they stand still soon after they continue there galloping, on legs one could say where teeth, to find there next victim to feast upon in soul and body.

An off-shoot of the Weedshoot, the Weedgrowth has evolved an additional method of reporduction.

It grows hollow flesh-like buds on its leaves. These buds are capable of taking some of the null-light absorbed by the plants and dispersing it as a weak form ectomist. The mist carries the one primal urge that the unthinking buds can generate - desire.

An organism will be tempted into eating the buds. However, once the fruit has been consumed it is already to late for the hungry animal. The bud sticks to a relatively acid-free area of the organism's digestive tract and puts down roots. Here it stays. Here it feeds. Here it grows.

The story ends with the root-covered animal dying from the growths impartially penetrating tissues and strangling organs. And thus the story of the Weedgrowth begins anew.

In the shallows the Irrinoct instead evolves extensions of its skin just over its upper jaw. They also evolve claw-like bones on their feet, enabling them to better dig.

tectonic shifts on SII-2453-0 are supremely slow, but they do happen, and the continental plates have been set in motion millions of years ago, away from the center, by the maw. Over these last few million years, this has born fruit, as plates grind up against each other and lift out of the ground great mountain ranges, making many of the isolated obsidian pillars littering the continents into the peaks of great mountain ranges. Even the 'teeth' of the planet themselves, the gigantic, slanted spikes growing from its equator are compressed and misshapen by the unyielding force of continental drift.

What this break of the crust also causes are some of these mountain ranges to break open like a bloated brainmash on the beach, and they explode with the force of a thousand elder Hsmyx, spewing forth lava, burning gras land and sending ashes and sulfur into the atmosphere. Rains of ash become part and parcel to life on SII-2453-0 and the little light that reached it from the stars is blocked out.
At the same time, this new coating of ash on the continents leads to an extreme increase in nutrients in the ground, causing a short few hundred millenia to see not rock, but something approaching soil cover the land. This is the time for land plants to strike.

Effects:
New Biome:
>Mountains
New (temporary) Biome:
>Ashlands
On ashlands, plants may evolve as if there was preexisting soil.

Everything in the following groups must make an extinction roll:
ALL land organisms (This includes all form of land, including obsidian pillars and Bay of Flesh)
ALL ocean surface organisms

The number to beat is 5.
For plants that exclusively rely on photosynthesis, add a +2.
For plants that partially rely on photosynthesis, add a +1.
For land organisms that could, and sometimes do, live fully under water, subtract a -1.

Extinction rules:
Every ID (including mine) has TWO rolls available it can allocate to creatures as it wishes.
You may roll twice for the same creature but if one succeeds and the other doesn't, both are used up.
There is no limit for how often a creature can be rolled for.
Except for the end-thread event, during extinction events you may still evolve.
If a creature is evolved and still vulnerable to the event while the event is still going, it too must be rolled for.

The male Punching Irrinocts find that it's much easier to take food and shelter from someone weaker than you than to find them yourself; so that's exactly what they do. Their fingernails turn into hardened plates, allowing them to deliver painful left hooks and uppercuts, but preventing them from digging. The preferred target of their debauchery is their own females: the males keep a "harem" that they keep in line with threat of pain and violence.
When two males meet, they will duel each other until at least one is unconscious; to prevent serious injury, the front of their skull is heavily packed with cushioning fat. The winner gets his opponent's territory and harem added to his riches, and the loser is treated as a laughingstock by the overall Irrinoct social order.
Also the females get flattened digging claws but that's boring and nobody cares

A Depths Irrinoct scurries the darkness, searching for sustenance. As is common, it comes across a Hsmyx corpse, recently exploded. It begins to feed on the remnants of the large creature, gulping down the pieces small enough to fit into its mouth-hole. But then it notices it in the darkness; a few paces away lies a weakly glowing ember. Its curiosity peaked, the Irrinoct slowly approaches. A mutation that proves useful and advantageous is two additional pairs of null-light flashing "eyes". The Hunter has adapted its cannons into a single forward-facing cannon that can fire an unstable ball of Arcane Sugar that’ll dissolves any flesh it hits or fizzle out of existence if it misses. To get the massive amount of Arcane Sugar it needs to make it’s projectiles the Hunter keeps Sweet Mold inside it’s Arcane Sugar storage and pumps it full of all the nutrients it needs and rest in spots of high null-light to encourage the production of Arcane Sugar. It’s favored prey are Hsmyxs, with they’re infrared pits and superior speed compared to most Hsmyxs species, making holes into its portal and vent tubes causing a build up inside the Hsmyxs ending in its explosive death and a feast for the Hunter.

The electrically negative Synapse grass has begun to develop a useful symbiosis with bacteria that feeds off electrically current, in this instance; the frequency of the world. The rich arsenic content of the soil fosters the growth of the bacteria. The plant and bacteria form an anode/ cathode pair, and the giant root network links it all together.

Periodically something akin to a spiritual tesla coil will arc from the tall grass, ripping the soul out of nearby herbivores. It usually returns to the body; or at least something will fill it. The grass is not too concerned.

The ash rain was incredibly harsh on the Windleaf, not only was the heavily diminished starlight a problem for the plant but the hot ash caused the lignin in the plants to ignite and burn down the Windleaf. To make it through this event the wind leaf has greatly shrank, it is less then half the size it was before, and its trunk and central stalk are gone. The leaves of the Windleaf are now much thinner and spread out to better catch what little starlight remains. There is almost no trace of lignin left in the plant, partly due to it making it harder to photosynthesizes in the parts of the plant where it is present, mostly due to the fires it causes if it gets too hot. The only trace of lignin left in the plant is in small amounts in the single seed stalk the Windleaf now possess. This seed stalk produces a single seed at a time, that seed is packed with enough nutrients to allow the plant to survive to point where it is big enough to survive.

Apologies for getting through the door late, but I had this in the works that I hadn't been able to post for several hours.

With the decreased available light to conduct photosynthesis, many Thyrius begin to die off in droves. Largely in part because of their nature in spurning the once unnecessary null-light. A small subset of the species however is able to evolve a way to utilize its null-light reflective underleaves to great effect. This Thyrius has had its reproductive leaf-buds become something more resembling a seed. With a large bulbous shell that is highly absorbent of null-light, these pods act as a food storage for a growing Thyrius, collecting a chunk of the null-light being reflected back down from the canopy.

Once the Thyrius is ready to release its seeds, the pods break off and stretch out, forming rudimentary sails to help the pods drift from the edges of the "forest". As the Thryius begins to grow its own leaves and taproot, the shells eventually break off to let the plant grow to maturity.

As the Shellgraavs stay near the thermal vents, where expulsions of minerals are abundant, they start to incorporate them into their own bodies; the Calcium Shellgraav has reinforced itself with, well, calcium, making both it's bulb and it's vines much more rigid. Not only is it able to grow to larger sizes, but it can now also form much bigger networks; sometimes, a single network can cover up to a square kilometer of territory.

We are not alone 1/4

COMFORT is warm.

Null light eminates from the deep, always. A constant current of strange energy warms its sediment, its water, its atmosphere, its creature. Steady, constant, comforting.
Over a quick few millenia, the temperature has risen by 5 degrees Kelvin. The poles rapidly lose ice, and null-synthesizing plants grow en masse. The deep, too, warms, and what is combustible becomes combustible more so, and what reproduces fast reproduces faster still.

The Flesh, above all, spreads in the heat, festers as fast as it rots and as a tumor spreads its tendrils further in land, covering the bay almost completely with pulsating Flesh.

The Feeling Imash goes all in with sensory organs: it's got chemically sensitive hairs growing out of it's lungs AND it's ears have grown larger and more sophisticated. The most prominent breakthrough, however, is the newfound tendency to travel in pairs: turns out when travelling with a friend, the likelihood of being consumed by a predator is reduced by roughly 50%, and the likelihood of having a potential breeding partner nearby is increased by roughly 100%. There is no kinship between the Imashes though, yet.

In the early days of a stalkers life it is fairly defenseless on land due to the fact it can't move well on land without a stone, which it has to find. To rectify this the stalkers have gained three new adaptations. They have gained a set of sturdy legs that allow them to move at a steady pass even without their ectoplasmic limbs. To allow them to fuel this energy intensive movement the stalker has grown a set of lungs capable of breathing air, these were adapted from a set of mutated throats. They have also fused they're sub-brains into a single sub-brain on a spine filled neck.

The sharp teeth of the Butchers are conveniently replaced with flattened ones suitable for grinding up grass the exact moment their prey goes extinct, and their behavior is rewired according to their new diet. To ensure proper digestion, a significant chunk of tissue it probably didn't need anyway is replaced with a grinder.
Additionally, it now carries it's young in small ectoplasmic chambers until they are old enough to be fitted with a Stone of their own, so that the time they spend in their pitiful, fully biological state on their own is minimized.

COMFORT is growth

While animals and plants of SII-2453-0 take little advantage of the heat which has enveloped the planet, the Flesh has no such qualms, expanding greedily over the shores of the western continent.
A particular mound expands over the millenia, a hunk of flesh fed on ants and Gurosites, growing, expanding, bloating up and pulsating, taking in heat and ejecting it manyfold. A mountain range of writhing, growing mass expands next to the Bay of Flesh, its mouth greedy and feeding, but its meat more nurishing, more energizing than purest sweet mold sugar.

The organism follows an invisible line only they can detect, flying endlessly from one pole to another in an endless migration of half circles around the planet. There is no mind to understand this behavior, and all utility is lost on them, their instincts guide them through the impossible geometry of the pyramids in an eldritch dance, forever pointing out something to an audience that does not exist.

Foreign entities who consume the grass run the risk of having their ectoplasm stripped from their body unto death, and their flesh fed to the grass.

For the first dozen generations or so, this led to grievous chemical burns of the whole body, but now, with their thick hide protecting them, it still leads to grievous chemical burns - they just don't give a shit about that anymore, as the acid can't actually melt far enough to reach their innards.

This provides the females with a constant, abundant and highly nutritious source of food, but has the unfortunate downside of making their stomach incompatible with the communal portal storage; thus, the gatherers and males are left alone in their pursuit of food.
On the note of males, they've degenerated even further - now nothing more than a gonadsack on legs.

While the Brain Imash's portal's coordinates in real space are always set in stone and advantageous to it's owner, it's coordinates in the pocket dimension are more or less random. And sometimes, "random" means that a shitload of free food keeps falling out of it. It's a fucking feast down there. Obviously Brain Imashes that preserve the access to this gratuitous supply for generations do much better than those who have to hunt for food, so two adaptations come about: firstly, the Cornucopia Imashes now pass on information from parent to child, as their egg cells are now intermixed with a significant portion of the brain tissue, containing data detailing the food portal's pocket dimension coordinates. And secondly, when a Cornucopia Imash DOESN'T have access to a food portal, it will continuously randomize it's portal's pocket dimension coordinates(within limit, of course) until the sensitive olfactory hairs on the tips of it's tentacles detect a waft of delicious Hoya coming out of it's portal. The Imash dedicates up to 50% of it's brain to "scanning" the pocket dimension at any given time, and is thus capable of surveying up to 42 possible coordinate sets per second. This does come at a cost however: with so much of it's brain permanently occupied, the Cornucopia Imash is even dumber than it's ancestors.

We are not alone (3/4)

COMFORT is kind

And Comfort gives gifts. A thousand thousand small buds of the womb, faxsimiles of the great whole, tumor wombs upon the mother womb, burst, their incubations ending in unison.
Too small for those with eyes to see, a new organism spreads into the world, reminiscent of the parasitic Gurosites.

They field great swarms which form a red mist when close together, and latch on to animal and plant alike, as long as ectoplasm eminates from them. These are the Psychofages.
The psychophages burry deep into organisms that are conscious or play with consiciousness enough to build out ectoplasma, and graft their flesh to its victim's.
Two metabolistic cycles then begin, an individual one and one communal. The individual one consists in the Psychophage hijaking cells around itself to grow unto the organism as a tumor, growing itself into a new womb unto its victim, for its young to burst forth as it itself burst from that holy Flesh.

The second metabolism occurs via a portal within the Psychophage's stomachless mouth. With it, the Psychophage sucks out ectoplasm from its victim, throwing it into a pocket dimension it shares with other phages nearby enough, some of the eenergy of which is distributed into all gestating womb-tumors of the swarm.

The rest, that soulstuff which is not used but left to anguish in null-space is periodically brought back by aging Psychophages to The Womb itself, injecting it into that pulsating organ, and the overspill causing a constant fog of hunger-filled ectoplasm around it.

This is not a punishment. It is a gift. A gift to all of you, to evolve (or not) as you wish.
>>
>>4191227
clarification: One Psychophage won't kill most organisms, but in swarms, as they tend to appear, they leave most everything a tumor ridden, soulless husk.

Driven out of the oceans by its aggressive relative, the Punching Irrinoct >>4190980 , the Nullightened Irrinoct waddles unto land on unsteady hind-legs. On the poles and Grasslands both, the creature now spreads out. The Nullightened Irrinoct has further specialized in the generation of null light from its surroundings, that which it eats and ectoplasm consumed with it. Due to this, the creature almost constantly glows brightly of null light, and when necessary is able to create immense flashes of null light, disrupting ectoplasm in its surroundings.

Wandering the cold wastes, surrounded by ruins too intricate to have been naturally generated, the Irrinoct feeds on the many Coilravs who have died natural deaths, and in some cases uses its null light to flash down Coilravs from the skies >>4185744 >>4188989 .

Sarglath continue to adapt, while not visible, their mind has grown stronger, and the use of bacterial nets allows them to enhance usage of ectoplasm.

Jet movement is replaced with a giant protofin of contained ectoplasm, allowing retention of higher thought. This greater thought capability allows for the addition of a third synchronized sarglath.

The third not only enables greater ectoplasm throughput, but less work for the whole. The hungry organism now prowls a multi level domain, from ocean, into the depths, and even temporarily beaching itself to consume coastal organisms.

The Eyelash Weedgrowth finds a wonderful new means of delivering it's seeds: the Psychofages! Using it's sticky "eyelashes", a seed will hitch a ride on a Psychofage until it reaches an animal, and quickly anchor itself into it's skin just like it would once anchor itself into stomach lining. This makes individual Psychofage infections much more lethal and painful, but renders swarms in their total less efficient, as a large amount of host nutrients is diverted to the Weedgrowths.
Also, a swarm infected by these seeds tends to leave rather beautiful fields full of rows upon rows of Weedgrowth wherever it feeds.

The mentat Imash is an offshoot of the brain imash. Initially an evolutionary war between it and that which would infest it resulted in a capsule like sheathing of tough membrane like material around the soft brain. Soon though, it became apparent that the pain granted CLARITY. In clarity the Imash could focus the ectoplasm into a formless state, overiding the will of that which made it up, with it's own. PAIN was a gift, a gift it could share. It was warm when it was cold, it was always there, a constant companion.

The Mentat can use its superior control over ectoplasm to create more complex constructs from the memories and ideas that swirl about in it. To see a mentat dragging itself along the coastline is not uncommon, aided by spectral hands, or horrific jaws.

The bulbs of infestation on it are periodically "pruned" by prolonged stays within a pocket dimension, to keep the pain up, but the spiritual consumption down. The harm done to the microscopic organisms is much greater than that of the larger imash.

Through eons of subsiding in an environment washed in high concentrations null light, taking on ectoplasm of all kinds of dying or newly dead creatures on the sea floor and using their “ember” / weak pocket dimensions to put their ectoplasm through a similar process to that of what the Hsmyx does to matter, the conciousness of the Depths Irrinoct continues warping. While the high concentration of ectoplasm this results in serves to artificially increase the conciousness of the creature, it also has the effect of making the creature become more aggressive, raving and incoherent. It’s not unusual for Irrinocts to attack and prey on each other, many having started to prey on the two Hsmyx species found in the depths >>4185817 >>4183577 (Mainly by trying to wound or disrupt the Hsmyx enough to self-destruct, leaving the pieces for the Irrinoct to feed on.

The Sugar Hsmyx has faced considerable trouble from the new masters of the depths, and increasing rejection from the greater hsmyx herds. Its fierce metabolic demands drive it to ever richer feeding territory, and apparently the occasional bout of friendly cannibalism is not smiled upon within the herd.

At first the new 'Phage menace nearly drove the hungry beasts to extinction, followed up by the emergence of the >>4192186 Deep Irrinoct. It was simply a smarter, and better drawn creature.

The Hsmyx's tendrils evolved longer, tipped with aggressive scrubbing brushes to get the small phages off it's skin, but the real path forward was the Lure. Periodic emission of ectoplasm draws 'cytes and 'phages to it's swirling binary vortex, offering a new and unlimited supply of subsistence, driving growth once more, and allowing it to begin feeding on new material.

Some would call the Surface Psychofage more merciful than it's ancestors. That is unso - it is simply more rational in it's feeding practices. Unlike the normal Psychofage, the creature does not have a set of burrowing jaws, and is thus limited solely to the outer tissues of creatures. While this means it doesn't get as much ectoplasm and food as it's predecessor on a daily basis, it is much more efficient in the long run - as the Surface Psychofages can keep it's host alive even with more than 50% of it's body covered in the little parasites, it is not uncommon for large swarms to keep siphoning the same host for months and even years.

The Psychofages feed on flesh, yet their craving for ectoplasm far exceeds that for meat - and the Mist Horse has capitalized on this. By angling it's pipes downward and dispersing concentrated ectoplasm around itself instead of above itself like before, it is able to divert the attention of the ravenous swarms to this mist, and make a quick getaway while the Psychofages attempt to feed on thin air. This technique is however horribly expensive, and so during day-to-day life the Mist Horse sticks with a much smaller, less concentrated ecto cloud, just enough to move it's muscleless joints.
And just to be totally safe, it has gotten rid of exposed flesh altogether wherever possible - the only remaining "weak spots" are the orifices and the neck.

It can now see without the aid of the stone’s false eyes, feel the bitter cold of its polar home, feel when it needs to feed, and the capacity to feel pain. COMFORT is unrelenting

The heat boils the Oceans. The psychophages devistate the grasland. The temperature dries out hte Hoya forests. The tumors infest the depths.

At the end of this era, a combination of factors has lead to a mass extinction less severe but more global than those before it. Heat from bellow and Psychophages from above make for a perfect storm of extinction. The womb, meanwhile, tauntingly persists and grows.

NO MORE EVOLUTIONS PAST THIS POST with a half hour grace period

Thread end extinction event. Everything that isn't rolled for dies.

RULES

• Every ID has *4* rolls to allocate.
• They roll a 1d8 for any species they want to save, and if they meet the target number or above, the species survives. What a species target number is can be found bellow
• Any species under threat of extinction whichis not rolled for, or which has no rolls that meet its target number will be extinct after I say so (normally about 24 hours after the start of extinction)
• Any species can have as many rolls associated with it as people are willing to give it.
• You must have posted an evo to be able to roll

Your target number is:

Start at 5
>If the evo is conscious or uses ectoplasm, add 1
>If the evo has specialized Psychophage defense, subtract 1
>If the evo has specialized heat regulation, subtract 1
>If the evo is part of the pyramid ecosystem, subtract 1
>If the evo is part of the Hsmyx ecosystem, add 1
>If the evo is a land plant, subtract 1
>If there is a saved evo the evo is symbiotic/parasitic with, subtract 1

max is 8, minimum is 2

Also, Subevent: ACTUALLY, IT'S BIGGER
With every successful roll you can decide whether you want to increase the size of your evo for next thread by doubling its size. Think about whether it makes sense for it to be larger.

Also going to go ahead with ACTUALLY IT'S BIGGER. On the grounds that due to a large loss in population of this species after the previous extinction event allowed individuals to grow bigger and more self-sufficient. Leaves go all the way out to 26 cm, and taproot can extend 3.5 m

I quite like the Spinetaurs' style, so once more with feeling.
Again, target 5.

Okay If there's any ID left to roll, they can still roll, but here's my last contribution to the thread:

I LIKE COOL THINGS

They make up a pretty cool ecosystem.

Also, I know it wasn't my roll that work but Arksiane's roll >>4194991 that worked, but I'd still want the Hoya trees to be bigger please.

So after some thought I've realized that it's sorta reasonable to make the Stalkers bigger too. This is in no way related to the fact that Nullightened Irrinocts are a lot bigger.

I'd like to see the >>4191791 version of Spinetaur's survive.

Sorta, a variant >>4193652 with very little exposed flesh was saved. Honestly though they are basically the same thing. And if they really wanted they could just devolve it.

Bit late to the thread and didn't get a chance to evolve, but I guess I'll try saving a few forgotten souls that I like, if I can.

The only saved creature I want to double the size of is the longchor, specifically its root.
Just tunnel that thing as deep as it can go.
