Coexistence was inevitable. Since the alleged dawn of time itself, humans have lived alongside strange and mysterious creatures. Beings brought into this world, gifted with god-like abilities and destructive raw strength. Some call them meta-humans, monsters, friends, most call them Pokemon. In the past, the mere reality of these Pokemon would spark warring conflicts that collapsed entire kingdoms, but today, we live amongst them in peace and harmony.

You are a young man. Kou Takagi. 19. Born and raised in the culturally rich Johto region. Now ready to leave home and forge your own path, your own legacy, your own life.

This is your story.

How long have you waited for this? Years, at least, possibly a decade, maybe a billion years. At least that’s what it felt like. It took you awhile, more than your fellow peers, but eventually you succumbed to the dream most young adolescents devote themselves to in their school years. The dream of becoming a Pokemon Trainer. Sure, it may be a bit childish, and it may be a career that didn’t...bring in the most money in the world, but godamnit you were gonna be the best there ever was even if it killed you.

You darted your gaze around the lobby. Handfuls of bright-eyed, bushy-tailed trainers littered the chairs and the walls, chattering like bugs. The energy that brimmed the room was nearly contagious. A nervous tension, for sure, but also fervent excitement that only ever appeared with a once in a lifetime moment like this. The breakfast you had only an hour ago threatened to hurl itself onto the floor, but with a couple shaky rubs of the tummy, it calmed down.

You entered this laboratory for one reason and one reason only. To recruit your first Pokemon, forming a binding contract that will hopefully last a lifetime. The Pokemon that sat beyond this lobby were no doubt nervous as well. They had to train for 3 years at one of several elite academies just to get to this point. All you had to do was wake up before 8am...which you would argue is much more challenging.

Overhead, fluorescent lights seemed blinding, and your palms were getting uncomfortably wet. You needed to do something other than sit in the corner like some kicked animal. Talk to someone, walk around, do a funny dance, something. If you had to be alone with your thoughts much longer there’s no telling what would happen.

>Find someone to talk to.

>Go to the bathroom to wash your face.

>Walk around the lobby.

Facing anyone with sweaty palms and a greasy face would be a crummy first impression. Getting off on the right foot was paramount on days like this. Meeting a Pokemon destined to be your teammate required tact, and more importantly, clean hands. Excusing yourself from the lobby, you give a rushed nod to the receptionist, making sure she knew you weren’t ditching out of cowardice.

The bathroom was unsurprisingly clean. Some berry-scented freshener tried its very hardest to mask the toilet stench, and small baskets filled with complimentary breath mints straddled each end of the sink bar. You grabbed a few for good measure. Starting the day with an empty bladder was also good etiquette, so you complete a quick pee while you’re here. Pissing your pants was not on your agenda today.

As you lather your hands under warm water, a nagging feeling prompts you to lift your head and stare at your own reflection. A plain letterman jacket you borrowed from Dad, boring undershirt, hand-me-down shorts. Your wardrobe didn’t exactly scream class and sophistication, but that was never really your style anyways. Best to at least be honest with yourself. Heaving a shaky sigh, you make sure to splash your face a few times, drying off with a scratchy fistful of paper towel. Stray wisps of hair clung to your face, and you found yourself frowning into the mirror.

What if you got a shitty partner? What if you couldn’t live up to any expectations? What if you failed? There would truly be no dire consequences should you sulk yourself back to your parent’s house, penniless and without any success to call your own, but there were no immediate back up plans. This was all you wanted to do since graduating. Surely you had trademark qualities to offer! It wasn't as if you were a hopeless screw up… The one thing everyone complimented you on since you could remember was;

>Your looks and charisma. Handsome and easy on the eyes. There’s not much your blue-ribbon smile can’t wiggle you out of.

>Your brains and resourcefulness. You’re sharp as a whip with intellect and wisdom far beyond your years.

>Your strength and bravery. Able-bodied and tough, and never one to back down from a challenge.

>Your kindness and empathy. You’re able to befriend most anyone with pure heart. You’re generous and loyal to a fault, without being too soft-natured.

Your brains. You are one smart cookie and you have been since childhood. Sports and popularity did little to fulfill you in the way that books and knowledge had. For a long time you feared that those hours holed up in school libraries wouldn’t amount to much in the future, but intelligence surprised you in many ways with how useful it often was. Hopefully it would be enough to secure you a capable partner.

Another sigh. What if they think you’re too nerdy?! Oh the agony! You double over and shake your fists. This was no time to be getting cold feet! Despite the clenching in your gut, you were going to come out of this with a favorable outcome! No matter how much anyone may antagonize you, your battle strategies were flawless and your encyclopedia of facts will ensure victory at every turn!

Bursting forth from the restroom with fortified confidence, you return to the lobby moments before announcements for names were to be called. People filed one by one into the backroom, patiently and impatiently standing by, hoping their names would be called next. It took almost 20 nail biting minutes for your very own God-given name to be summoned, as if being siphoned to your executioner. Nearby eyes seemed to glower upon you as you made your way across the room, each step resisting. It was like wading through mud.

“Kou Takagi?” The receptionist glanced at you past her clipboard.

“Uh. Yeah. That’s me.” You force an awkward smile.

“Please, follow me.” She ushered you past the desk, inside of some doored off hallway that decorated itself in a completely different style than the lobby. It was clinical, mechanical. Metal ceiling and sterile, white floor. Truly, this was a laboratory. In an attempt to quell aching nerves, you browsed the picture frames along the walls. Some containing medical illustrations, others breathtaking photos of landscapes you have never seen in person. You wondered if Pokemon photography was something you’d be good at. The nice lady dropped you off in a cramped room, with little furniture aside from a wooden chair and a black desk. The carpet was a lifeless gray and you could vaguely make out the hum of a conditioning duct overhead.

“Wait here for just a moment. We’ll bring in the candidates shortly.” With nothing but a bow and a rehearsed thumbs up, the lady closed the door, leaving you alone in this little room.

There was nothing to do except sit down and wait out your doom. The chair was rigid and cheap, it was like sitting on stone. It made your butt itch so you scratched it while you still had time to yourself. The absence of any sound set you on edge. Couldn’t they at least play some elevator music or something? All that kept you company was the thrumming in your ears. It made no attempt to comfort you.

At the very least you were semi-prepared for this. It was rare for you to ever show up unarmed. Most scenarios you had mentally simulated in your brain the weeks prior, nothing would take you by surprise. However, most of your free time was spent;

>Talking to yourself in a mirror. Practicing introductions, questions, small talk.

>Constructing a flawless testimony. A list of your best traits as a prospective trainer was armed at the ready for whoever needed persuasion.

>Researching the academy from which your candidates attended. You were familiar with every class and regimen they were required to pass, and you know exactly what that academy specializes in.

If nothing else, you had pure facts and evidence. Undeniable proof of your merits as a trainer. If any of them had concerns or questions, you were prepared to fire back with specific examples and bulletproof arguments. What you lacked in small talk you made up for in truth. They’d be stupid not to at least take that into consideration.

For a while it stayed quiet. You’d mindlessly tap your fingers to try and fill the room with anything pleasant, but you froze once approaching footsteps were heard outside. Muffled conversation was next. You couldn’t make out any of the words, but you guessed it was the receptionist briefing your candidates. Okay, Kou. It was showtime. You puffed your chest, balled your fists, smiled as hard as you had ever smiled in your life, it was an attempt to bolster charisma. You had to broadcast self-assurance, no one would want to work for someone who doubted themselves. The doorknob clicked.

Time felt like it crawled to a halt. Three people shuffled in, all making eye contact with you one by one. They were all girls. Because of course they were. You were merely a puppet cast in the universe’s wretched stage play. Simply by color of hair you could identify their typings. Fire, Water, Grass. Their uniforms all matched, proudly displaying their academy’s colors, dirty red and vivid gold. Each one had a unique posture and demeanor. The Fire-type seemed to overflow with vigor. Her eyes practically carved apart your very soul with their intensity. The Water-type was aloof, almost bored. She seemed far more invested in some fuzz on her skirt than anything else. And lastly, the Grass-type. Gentle, yet secure. She carried a gracefulness and control in her body that seemed to honor her years of training. All three stood before you, and without you even saying a word, they started talking, Fire-head leading the pack.

“Name’s Brightburn, but you can call me total bad-ass.” Cocking her head to one side, she dusted her fingernails along her tie, a cocky grin blazing her features.

“Just use your real name, Ada.” The Water-type scoffed.

“God shut the FUCK UP, Yui. It IS my real name.”

“If you want a name that actually fits, you can use Tiny-Penis.”

“OH WOW! Where’d you learn that one? Fucking PRESCHOOL?” The supposed total bad-ass grabbed hold of the Water-type’s shoulders, shaking her with a pissed off expression. You guessed her name was Yui. Her eyes continued to stare at the ground, she was unfazed.

However loud and boisterous the commotion seemed, a pristine ‘ahem’ from the Grass-type made itself clearly heard.

“This is hardly a way to make an entrance, you two…” She shook her head, disappointment weaving across her pale, flawless skin. “Please act like adults…” Now you could see a tulip pink dusted on her cheeks. It was as if being in the same room as the others caused her great discomfort. “Ehm- hi,” She waved. “...my name’s Katsumi, Katsumi Fujiwa.” With a bit of a wobble, she offered you a curtsy.

You truly were speechless. Was this the usual fare for things like this? You expected structure and formal, rigid handshakes and bows, but all you had was one Pokemon strangling another, and the other desperately trying to pretend she was anywhere else. Maybe you should do something.

>Tell everyone to calm down and lead the conversation, clearly you need to be in control if this is going to work.

Were you a tolerant man? Yes, of course, but daylight was burning and so was your patience. You stood up and clapped your hands once, demanding attention to yourself. Katsumi immediately straightened up, but it took the other two a moment or so to calm themselves down.

“Let’s all calm down. We all know why we’re here so let’s just try and do this without a fight, yeah?” Evenings spent at the public debate club were not wasted, for your voice was strong and sure. “We should give proper introductions. First name, last name.” You put your hand against her chest. “Kou Takagi. Pleasure to meet all of you.” All three sort of half-heartedly replied with a couple murmurs and nods.

“Ada...Ada Bandler.” Her arms were hooked behind her, left foot kicking at the ground like something a reprimanded child would do. How much of that raucous personality was real? “I’m classified as a Cyndaquil species.” She pursed her lips together tight, and huffed out a muted ember.

“Yui Nakahara.” The middle girl lifted one hand. “Uhhhh, Totodile species.” Shifting her weight to the other foot, she pulled apart each side of her mouth. Two pearly rows of sharpened teeth. Those would surely be useful in battle. Her fingers unhooked out of her mouth and she footnoted her intro with a noncommittal shrug.

“I’ve already introduced myself...but to repeat, my name is Katsumi Fujiwa. My namesake originates from a long line of Chikorita descent.” Her body practically beamed with pride. Was her family a historical one? You had never heard of the Fujiwa name till now, but then again, the various clans and houses that spanned across Johto were hard to keep track of, no matter how much you studied.

“Great! Now we all know each other, already off to a nice start.” Satisfied, you rub your hands together, trying to decide where exactly you needed to go next. Questions? The interview portion of recruitment seemed essential, so perhaps that’d be good. Retaking your seat, you smoothed over your hair with a swipe. But who should do the questioning first?

Are Pokemon daycares causal meet-n-fuck venues. Do they lay eggs? Are there commercial tiddy farms for Miltanks still? How the fuck does trading evolution work? Are all Pokemon monster girls or are there also dudes? Is it impossible for Pokemon from incompatible egg groups to have children? Can Ada set her back on fire? How pronounced are the physical alterations of most Pokemon? Are Pidgeys, harpies or regular people with wings taped on? Do they even have wings? Do they have to activate combat mode or something where they gain these traits? Are legendaries godlike figures on par with Jesus? Is Ho-oh a celebrity or something?

Arms crossed over your chest, you take a lean back into your chair and motion towards the trio. “If any of you have questions for me I’d like to hear them.” As much as you’d like to lead with your forefront concerns, keeping their thoughts into consideration is what will let your relationship stay strong and trustworthy. You’re nothing without their help, anyways.

“Yeah uh- so like, what exactly are your plans, dude.” Ada shot you a side-glance. “We all got ambitions, too.” The other two sort of gave thoughtful nods.

“...Do you plan on doing the gym challenge?” Katsumi added.

“...Or are you just going to settle for the easy way out?” Yui eyed you up and down.

>You want to be the Champion. The strongest. The undefeated. You need Pokemon willing to fight tooth and nail.

>You want to be experienced. Devoting yourself to uncovering secrets, hidden truths, faraway lands.

“...I plan on- no, I WILL become the Champion.” A bold promise, but stretching the truth is fair game in a situation like this. You swallowed with a heavy gulp, silently praying that no one catches your bluff.

“Big balls.” Remarked Yui, examining a stray hangnail.

“...I LIKE big balls!” Ada shook her fists, momentum in her energy completely carrying her body into a hop. Yui made a face.

“You’ll be up against heavy competition, Takagi.” Katsumi addressed your surname. You wondered if those manners came with a pedigree. “...and though I applaud your ambition, you do realize how unrealistic you sound right now, don’t you?” Shit.

Of course she’d be the one to scope out your white lie, though it couldn’t be a white lie...not yet, anyways. Maybe just an inflated promise. You drew a quick breath and steadied an elbow on the desk.

“Would you rather I dream unrealistically, or dream pathetically? I don’t just want to be the best in my hometown. I want to be the best ever.” It took a significant amount of effort not to stutter but as far as you could hear, you were convincing.

“Most trainers don’t even become gym leaders…” Katsumi uncomfortably rubbed at her arm, craning her neck as if toddling thoughts around her head. “I just- don’t want to see you get hurt, is all.”

“Yeah, no offense, buddy, but you don’t look like anything special.” Ada stretched both arms over her head, as if her sentence were just a casual remark and not a scathing removal of your guts. “I want a trainer who like- is totally cool, like me, y’know?” She held her pose for a few seconds, then relaxed into a hunch. “...but s’not like we got much of a choice.” Now she was regarding the other two. “We signed away our free will at graduation.”

Was that really how the academies handled things? Graduating alumni had no decision making power? It was a mystery why they would even choose to go in the first place. Apparently your look of confusion didn’t bother disguising itself. Yui waved for your attention, and offered some friendly exposition.

“We get 3 months,” She held up three fingers. “After that we’re allowed to terminate the contract if the partnership uh- isn’t working out.” Shrugged and stuck her tongue out. Oh, so maybe it was like a forced internship kind of policy. Still seemed odd to you, but it was a vast improvement to a life of imprisonment.

“Ooh- tell me, tell me,” Ada snapped both of her fingers. “Ya do any cool extracurriculars? After all, adventures ain’t all about battling and ass-whooping.”

You reach a steady hand behind your neck hoping it’ll jostle anything useful. At least, anything that would have practicality on a quest such as yours.

“Uh- I...I can cook. Really well.” You finally admit. “If there’s any food you guys would want I could prooobably find a way to make it.” You drawled out the important key word here: probably. Supplies more often than not might be scarce out on the roads. You don’t think an entire holiday feast would really be possible on most days. The three gave a mixed reception. Ada had a wild grin, Yui a contemplative hum, and Katsumi a distilled golf clap.

“Culinary skills are hard to come by! I’m pleased to hear you can handle yourself in a kitchen.” The Grass-type now seemed to appraise you once more, expression brightening, supposedly she liked what she saw.

“Man- I could go for a Pecha Pie right about now.” Ada clutched her midsection, pantomiming starvation. “...and campfire S'mores! Oh those are CRAZY good!” Something glistened at the corner of her mouth. A bit of drool.

Giving yourself a brief minute to think, you leaned forward and made sure to clear your voice with intent.

“May I ask a few questions then?” All three stood to attention. You interpreted their silence as a Yes.

What do you want out of your "internship"?

What's your greatest non-combat related skill, in your own eyes?

What are you most knowledgeable in?

How comfortable are you with traveling with a dude, basically alone, for days at a time between locations?

Also why Brightburn, Ada?

There was no use beating around the bush. Best to ask the awkward questions here, otherwise things might get terribly uncomfortable from this point on.

“How comfortable are you travelling alone with a guy?”

You weren’t stupid, and you especially weren’t naive. Two persons of the opposite sex, spending long days and cozy nights together in tents, lodges, hotels...well, the jokes practically wrote themselves. Romance was never a primary concern for you. You just wanted a fun-filled, edge of your seat experience that would hopefully end in eight badges and an eternal plaque in the Hall of Fame, but perhaps you were a minority.

Thirty seconds of deep thought completely obscured the unfortunate silence between all four of you. No one had answered. Another few beats. Then Ada snorts.

“What...you think anything’s gonna happen? What are YOU gonna do? We have superpowers y’know.” Her answer forces a sigh out of you.

“...and what if YOU forced yourself on me? I’m completely defenseless, you know.”

“Ehm- if you report any of us to the GPR we’re banned from participating in legalized battle events.” Katsumi, the voice of reason, began to clarify. “Should a Pokemon enact assault on a human in any way they are to be blacklisted entirely.”

GPR, or the Global Pokemon Registry, kept careful and precise data of each Pokemon who desired to participate in organized affairs. Whether it be a contest, festival or battle tournament, proper identification with the GPR was mandatory. Of course one could forge identification, but systems have become more sophisticated with each year, and producing an illegal ID card now needs quite the specialized hand.

“...I guess so. But still, are any of you uncomfortable at all?” You let the pressure off a bit, at this point you just wanted to be a good person, and honesty regarding this kind of thing was important.

“It’d be a lie if I said no…” Yui itched at her leg. “...But that’s...what trust is for.” Her eyes bounced between the floor and your chest, she seemed stubborn on avoiding direct eye contact. “...and if you want any chance at being Champion...you need trust.” The other nodded.

“I won’t let your trust go to waste. I promise.” Your right hand pressed firm to your chest. You felt the need to pledge your word, even if it was just to ease their worries.

“Moving on from that topic...I guess uh- well, uh, what would you...say your best trait would be out of battle? Like, non-combat related.” Regardless of brute strength, each Pokemon always brought something slipped up their sleeve. A special talent, a different perspective, something unique to offer. What did they have?

Like the other question it took them a few pauses to consider their responses, though not nearly as long as the first. You weren’t surprised when it was Ada who spoke first.

“I’m fireproof!”

“Every Fire-type is fireproof, idiot.” Yui gave an annoyed eyeroll.

“Oh- right. Uhhhhhhhh how about...OH! I can eat twice my weight in steak!” Her eyes sparkled.

You wiped a hand across your mouth. Was that a...talent? You made an attempt to speak up.

“Uh- Ada-”

“NO! NO! NO! WAIT!” Her arms thrust up into the air, striking a dramatic pose. “I ain’t afraid of ANYTHING!” She exploded in raucous laughter.

At least she was loud. You’d be hard pressed to lose her in a crowd. It wasn’t as if bravery didn’t have its place either...but you had to recognize the fact that she likely sacrificed bravery for common sense. All you could respond with was an optimistic thumbs up. Katsumi then began to talk.

“As a representative of the Fujiwa family I have studied many vocations.” Her words were spoken not with arrogance, but with a heavy honor she seemed to bear. “Swordsmanship, waterbrush, needlecraft, linguistics…” Ada imitated talking with her mouth. “...and as a genetic trait inherited from my grandmother, I am gifted with aromatherapy.” Her smile widened, as if this feature made her the most proud. “Should you ever feel worried or upset, I might help soothe you with my perfume.” Her testimony ended with a gracious bow.
“What’s smelling pretty gonna do for anyone…” Ada quirked a brow and pinched her nose. “Does that mean you don’t shower?”

“Of course I shower, you ape.” Katsumi suddenly snapped, her expression hardening into fierce resolve.

“Uhhhh, I think I thought of my trait.” Yui lifted her arm, waiting to be given permission to continue. A wave of your hand was all she needed. “Uhhhhhhhh, I like- am good at…” Her words trailed off into a puzzled expression. Yui opened her mouth, then closed it again, like she should choose her words carefully. “...sleight of hand?” Her shoulders tensed. “...I g-guess pickpocketing...uh, but it...y’know, has multiple uses.” Ada snorted.

“Bro, you’re a thief?”

“...I just did a bit of shoplifting when I was a kid, ok?”

“That’s metal.”

“If you say so.”

How did a pickpocket acquire entrance into their academy, let alone any academy. Her admission of guilt only served to raise more questions.

In an actual interview it's probably a bad idea
But she's nothing if not entertaining at least.

Heck I want to ask her what she thinks cool is.

Also Katsumi definitely has a side to her that isn't being shown through her decorum. Might be good to remind her we're looking for a partner, not a professional employee. While this is kind of an interview, we're looking for an equal when it comes to a first partner.

Yui, being as reserved as she is, isn't gonna open up easily. Best hit her with questions that give her a chance to open up.

>>4172214
I'd let Yui know she had until the end of the interview to show her skill. A criminal record is something we ought to know of. Along with the fact as long as she didn't commit a straight up felony we were fine. Tough times call for tough people and skills.

Katsumi has a huge amount of training under her belt though.

For the time being, you decided to ignore Yui’s liabilities. Being judgmental would accomplish little, and frankly there were worse crimes one could commit than looting of a few things here and there, though you quietly reminded yourself to keep a mental note regarding your pockets.

“Alright, and why do you all want to battle. What is it about combat that motivates or inspires you?” There was a momentary look of bewilderment on Yui’s face. Perhaps she expected interrogation, but soon enough she had defaulted back to that deadpanned visage. Off to the side, Ada was bouncing up and down.

“God, the RUSH! Beating your opponent into the dirt with nothing but your FISTS. Is there anything else like it?” She cradled her hands against her heart, head turned upward to the ceiling. It was like she was having a religious experience. “I love wiping smug grins off stupid faces.” You stifle a laugh. As far as you were concerned, Ada was the very essence of smug grin on stupid face.

“There is a particular...energy to it, huh?” Katsumi tapped at her mouth with one finger, twisting thoughtfully and rubbing her legs together. “I do try my best to stay composed but ah- letting loose once in a while...i-it’s nice.” Katsumi seemed almost ruffled. Did she feel ashamed? There was really nothing wrong with liking a good fight, no? That memorable rosy glow returned once more to paint her cheeks, now accompanied by some mischievous glint in her eyes.

“Yeah. It is kinda fun.” Yui added. Her posture adjusted itself, prepared to say something else, but she stopped and stared at the wall instead.

“Uh- Yui, you wanna elaborate? Excuse me for saying but uh, you don’t seem the type for fun.” If you wanted productive feedback out of that Water-type you had to direct your questions forcefully.

“Oh, you know. It’s like. Uh, y’know-” She flopped her hand back and forth. “It’s like a puzzle, I guess. It’s...cool to learn stuff, while you’re fighting, I mean. I know that sounds kinda stupid but I dunno.”

“No, no, I understand.” You tried to embolden her. “It’s a game, a problem, with a solution.” Yui’s eyes seem to want to reach yours again, but fall just short.

“Mhm. A game. It’s fun to figure it out.”

Now here was progress. You were learning about them. It wouldn’t be long before you had enough information to make a final decision.

“...and uh, what would each of you like to take away from all this? This internship, I guess.” This truly felt like a job interview, which you had come expecting, you just never quite predicted that it would be you leading the conversation.

“See the world. Eat the food. Get super strong. If I could join like, a cool biker gang along the way sure, but ehhhhh- that’s OPTIONAL.” Light-hearted as always, Ada’s answer did little to surprise you. “If I come out the other end of this a Champion’s Pokemon then, motherfucker, that’d be awesome.” Katsumi clicked her tongue at Ada.

“Language, Miss Bandler.”

“Ugh, if you’re gonna act like my Mom just go the full mile and SPANK ME, Kats.” The feisty comeback felt like it gave Katsumi wrinkles. She smoothed back her hair and shimmied up straight, back to composure!

“Personally, I believe this region has a unique historical lore...I’d love to visit landmarks and truly learn more about its origins.” Tourism? Not an answer you really felt excited about, but it was valid nonetheless. It was true that Johto had no shortage in mythology and spirituality, but meeting a native that remained passionate about such a topic was uncommon. You’d see that more so in foreigners, usually Kalos.

Subconsciously you expected a chime in from Yui right about now, but the blue-haired Pokemon stood wordless in between the others.
>>
“Yui?” You prodded at her. She let out an annoyed groan.

“...I dunno. I haven’t really...uh, thought about it.” The ever big-mouthed Ada felt compelled to add commentary.

“Yui just did this for her folks.” She shrugged. “Probably shouldn’t expect much once her 3 months are up, Kou.” Concerned, you studied Yui’s face in the presence of such exposure, but she remained transfixed, gazing off into space, only denoting her existence with a plain hum.

Maybe you’d poke her later, though, your time was fast approaching its end. You had no doubt that all the other trainers probably had partners by now.

“...Why Brightburn?” You inquired. The call of her nickname snapped the Fire-type straightforward, her full attention yours.

“Why? Well, are ya stupid? I’m hot and flame-y and fucking SPICY! So it makes total sense. Ada is just so...weak. Not at all the type of name a cool guy should have. I mean- maybe it could use some work, but don’t it sound like some kinda comic book hero? BRIGHTBURN, Savior of Man!” Her chest puffed out like a crowned chicken, and you could vaguely make out stray embers flecking off her hair, though they harmlessly fizzled before hitting the floor. “Man, all these FUCKING questions...just choose already. Don’t gotta worry about hurting feelings, people who don’t get picked just gotta wait till’ the next recruitment ceremony happens. All's fair in battle and war.”

Getting rushed into such a life-changing decision didn’t sit right with you, but she had a point. You dragged this on a bit longer than even you really expected. Couldn’t this place at least give you a clock to look at? How long had it even been?

Were you even ready to choose? Did you have more questions? Maybe a trick question?

But really I want to poke Yui just a bit more. It seems like there's something she's supressing. And Totadile -> Crocanaw -> Feraligator has never failed my ass.

I'd like to ask her the nature of her familial situation.

Also probe Katsumi on just how passionate she is about her reason. She seemed more like she wanted to come off as thoughtful than being neck deep in her passion. Make it clear you want to see her as she truly is.

Becoming a champion and champion's pokemon requires passion. Without passion and discipline combined, a truly lofty goal is impossible to achieve. You basically need near "that person is delusional" levels of passion.

I guess I just want to probe the passion levels of all three before making a choice. Katsumi is definitely hiding who she really is what with the "letting loose" remark. Yui is hiding who she is too, possibly out of some sort of shame. The quietness might just be her suppressing her aggressive tendencies.

“Ada.” Carefully, you rose from your seat, arms sternly crossed. “...Are you going to take this journey seriously?” You tried to communicate the weight of your question. If you were going to choose a partner, you’d like one that’s dedicated and passionate. Regardless of how intelligent she was, Ada came with spunk and a blazing spirit that you no doubt knew would come in handy. She clasped both of her hands together. Sparks crackled off the back of her head.

“Dead seriously, man.” The disappointment in the other two did not go unnoticed. They knew you had reached a conclusion, and their frames seemed to wilt. “I won’t let you down, we’ll work super hard and get that Champion title!” Ada punched the air. “So we got a deal?!”

You now stared intently at the desk, processing everything taking place before you. This was it, huh? You were choosing your first Pokemon partner. After this, you would walk out of this building and take your first steps as a legitimate trainer. A shaky breath drew itself into your chest, then exhaled in a calm hush.

“Looks like we have a dea-” The last word didn’t even get the chance to finish. Ada had scooped you up into a crushing hug. Now that your proximity was so close, you burned at her touch. Literally. Even through clothing, Ada’s body heat scorched your skin and you had to push her off before you actually burnt yourself. She didn’t seem offended, in fact she simply swirled about the room like a spinning top.

“Oh man, this is gonna be awesome! I’m gonna fight other trainers! I’m...gonna shit in the woods! I gotta call my family!” Her boastful cheering only rubbed salt into the others, they were now turned to one another, trading reassuring looks.

“Well, congrats, Ada.” Yui rubbed a piece of hair between her fingers. “Maybe I’ll see you on TV.”

“Miss Bandler, don’t let this chance go to waste.” Katsumi steered a motherly finger at Ada, her expression demanding but...did you catch a glimpse of pride?
“Kou! Kou! We gotta go get registered! Let’s make this OFFICIAL!” Ada rushed to give her colleagues eager handshakes and shoulder pats, sincerely parting with ‘Good luck!’s to each, and like a whirlwind, she had gripped your arm to drag you back to the lobby. Maybe you’d run across Katsumi and Yui in the future, hopefully with capable trainers that could work with them better than you. Today would’ve always ended up with two disappointed Pokemon, but the sour feeling behind your throat still tasted like guilt.

Both of you emerged once again in the decorative lobby, now considerably more empty. You could see a few trainers chatting with their new companions off to the side, possibly going over the day’s schedule.

“So I take it you’ve made a choice?” The receptionist blinked at you and you could see wisps of her hair impeding that carefully painted face. The day’s stresses were beginning to show.

“YEP! It’s me. He chose me. Hah! The others never stood a chance!” Ada tapped the desk with two fingers. “So uh- let’s do that uh- registration thingie, yeah?” With a few clacks of her keyboard and a few shuffles of papers, the receptionist leaned down to retrieve something from one of her many drawers. Bringing it into the light, you saw it was a Pokedex, a newer model. It was still boxed in its original packaging, just begging to be opened. The lady waggled a pen at it.

“Go ahead. Open it up, see if it works. We can get you another one if it’s bugged.” She didn’t have to ask twice. Compelled by pure adrenaline, you tore off the sticker along the top, pushing its tab open. The Pokedex slid out flawlessly, its dust guard gliding off with a satisfying peel. In the screen’s reflection you saw both yourself, and Ada, it was picturesque. A single click along its side was all it took to spring life into the Pokedex. It made a satisfying chime and began loading up the home screen. In your peripheral you saw the receptionist wave at Ada. “You have your ID card, yes?” Usually one of many words, Ada was now speechless. She simply swiped her ID from some busted up wallet and passed it on to you. At the bottom of the Pokedex there was an open slot, and even without instructions you were keen enough to push the card into the slot, hold it for a few seconds, then remove it. Another beep. A loading screen. Then there she was.

Ada’s full frontal academy photo displayed in glorious color upon your screen, and below, all the information a trainer would need.

“Damn, they used that photo? How fucking ugly.” Ada propped an arm on your shoulder, squinting at the small screen. “But there we go. From now on, I am your LOYAL partner in crime!” She shuffled back, then mimicked a princely bow, dipping low at her waist. It got a chuckle out of you. Caught up in the roleplay, you knighted her with an invisible sword, head raised high.

“Sir Bandler, I hereby...swear thee...into office?” Ada almost tripped, cackling into a hyena roar.

“Office?! Isn’t that like a prime minister or something? God, you suck at this.”

“...Are you two good now?” The receptionist had her chin rested atop her palm. “If so please make room.” You babble out an apology and creep to the center of the lobby with Ada.

“Ohhhh! I’m ITCHING, dude. CAN WE BATTLE NOW? Like- I don’t care WHO I just wanna do like a trial run! I’m so pumped!” You kept a cautious few feet between both of you. Spittles of fire were now practically leaping off of her, and you didn’t want to burn your favorite jacket. “C’mon, Kou!”

From the use of the term gym challenge which originated in sword and shield the answer is probably yes. Ada is going to be really fucking good when she becomes a Typhlosion and gets eruption. Most of the major competition and counters to Typhlosion are Pokemon from foreign regions, and in time Ada will become a fucking freight train. 150 power stab with quick claw is fucking broken. Thunder punch, earthquake, solar beam, all good shit, that can make her an absolute monster against Pokemon that normally have the type advantage. Since this isn't the game and sunny conditions can occur without use of sunny day she could be really dangerous during summer months.
>>
>>4173757

Yes Thunder Punch is a tutored move, but an electric move on a fire Pokemon is really good especially since it has 75 power a chance to paralyze so it's worth going out of the way to get. Eruption is at level 82 but it is arguably one of the best moves for Ada to ever get because of how stupidly strong it is. Solar beam and Earthquake are TMs

Since we won't get Eruption until the final level she learns a normal move here are some good moves to consider in the meantime or to use in rotation since TMs have unlimited uses. We could run will-o-wisp, toxic, double team and smokescreen to make an offensively annoying attrition build. Typholsion is eligible for rest/sleep talk combo which could be devastating since it could open up the possibility of a fully powered eruption even after taking quite a bit of damage. Rollout+Defense Curl is available. Burn out is a very interesting move since it could allow Ada to become typless when paired with a diverse move pool could make her tricky to deal with.

I would like to point out that I am not a Pokemon autist and this is what I could pull together from Bulbipedia in like five minutes. I haven't played a game since Pokemon Black 1.

Pondering her request over a casual stretch, you peeked around the lobby. There were still three trainers mingling about with their Pokemon, probably breaking the ice before setting off. There was no harm in starting this relationship off on the foot of battle, one’s true personality is said to shine in combat, of course.

“Yeah, let’s see if anyone around is up for it.” With a laidback nod you both shuffle over to a pair near one of the benches. They lift their heads, assessing you before you even say a word. It was a young man, probably around your age, though he could be older. His shoulders were wideset, and his shirt hugged bulking muscles around his arms. Inwardly, you gulp. Comparatively, his partner felt like she was shrinking around him, completely outclassed by his size. Her hair was a cotton candy pink, waving throughout her frame like a gale, and the uniform she wore matched Ada’s. With a body so petite you wondered if she’d be any use in battle at all.

“Hey guys! Uh-- you feel up to a battle? Just to celebrate the day and all!” Your best efforts to slide out a friendly greeting didn’t seem to phase them. The trainer shifted to turn his body towards you, right hand tugging at his chin in a pensive gesture.

“What do you think, Illya? You up for it?” He finally spoke, in a voice that served to match his build. Deep, commanding, but with an affable husk that you’d probably hear in a popular frat guy. The pink girl stood on her toes and fluffed her hair.

“Mmmm, I guess! I miiiiight be a bit rusty, though.” She pouted, fluttering doe eyes at him and drawling her voice with an annoying bite. Ah, a cheerleader stereotype and a jock stereotype, what a cliche. You swivel to elbow Ada, just enough to get her attention.

“Do you know her? I think she went to your school.” Ada only managed a clueless shrug.

“I dunno. We had a big school. Maybe seen her in the halls.” So there was no insight on her capabilities or weaknesses, guess you’ll go in blind. Matching eye contact with the trainer, you show him a thumbs up.
“Let’s use the field out front then!”
>>
Now that you were outside, you welcomed the daylight breeze. Deep inhales carried the smell of blooming wildflowers and verdant grasses. It was mid-Spring, and plant life exploded with the melting of the winter frost. Just the perfect temperature, too. You couldn’t have asked for a better day to have your first battle.

Both teams stood several feet apart, facing one another across a groomed field. You could see the wind turbine that powered the lab a mile or so out. Flocks of Pidgey chirped hidden amongst the trees. Ada had already started her warm-up stretches. Bending to touch her toes, spinning both ways to crack out her back, and reaching her arms towards the sky.

“Let’s have a good, CLEAN fight, princess!” She called out to her opponent, determined smile huffing steam like a revved vehicle. The other Pokemon simply continued to preene her curly locks. Did she think this was a pageant? Her hair was gonna get messed up soon, anyways.

“I’ll have you know, if you burn any of my clothes there will be trouble.” She flattened out her skirt.

“Oh I’m gonna be burning a lot more than clothes, darling.” Ada crouched, hands clasped over her knees.

“Then I hope you have insurance.”

Pinkie’s trainer stood with a powerful stance, legs locked into the ground.

“I’ll let you have the first move, then!” He shouted to you, then gave a two-fingered salute.

One thing you never let yourself forget is how important stats were in battle, and today was no exception. With feet planted solid, you threw your hand forward to command your very first battle plan!

“Ada! Smokescreen!” With precise reaction time, she catapulted herself upwards with a crackling THOOM, and was upon the opponent in an instant. From where you stood you could spot crackling embers falling from her forearms, and suddenly plumes of smoke burst from her nose and mouth, clouding the whole battle field.

Well. Hm. Now you can’t see shit. While the field is covered you’ll have to rely on Ada’s eyes. From behind the smoke you heard the other trainer shout out his attack.

“Illya! Disarming Voice!” Her reaction time was nearly as quick as Ada’s, and without even a margin for pause, you’re forced to cover your ears once an ear splitting shriek reverberated through the smoke. You had no idea if it was affecting Ada, but from the eerie stillness inside the smog, you could assume it was.

The muscles in your arms started to seize, but you couldn’t let this overwhelm you yet. You needed to do something!

>disarming voice
well shit, it's a fairy.

Fairies tend to have the highest special defence.

We're gonna need to LEER and Tackle. We're already at a disadvantage due to Disarming Voice bypassing accuracy. She don't need to see us.

Ember is likely not to do as much damage as tackles do in this case. Depending on our Special attack vs attack. They're probably pretty close together at the moment, so tackling is a good idea. Possibly utilizing LEER before TACKLE would do a lot. But we've already taken a hit.

The opponent will likely abuse Disarming Voice as they already have given first hit and have an accuracy issue. We can start tackling to try and catch up or, if Ada feels like she's still pretty battle ready, leer up close and then start pounding(TACKLE).

You're stuck in a smoke screen blasting sound because you can't see where the enemy is.

Two red eyes rise out of the smoke bearing down on you. You know it's coming. You know you're gonna be lit up by brightburn.

Also faries tend to have higher sp def and good def. So take er down a peg.

Summoning willpower, you blaze through the options before you. If that Pokemon had an attack unaffected by accuracy changes then there was no reason to focus on that. But remembering how frail she was physically...a defensive debuff seemed to be your best choice.

“Ada! Leer!” You forced yourself to shout with more volume, enough to pierce through the haze. Without missing a beat, Ada replies.

“On it!”

You had to strain your eyes to make out much of anything. Maybe a movement, a lingering shadow, not much. You held your breath. Sweat gathered between your fingers. Then a flash of something. It flickered for only a moment, but you swore you saw two glowing eyes break through the smoke.

“Pound!” The other trainer’s voice snapped you back to focus, and bracing for the attack, you frantically search the cloud. Little by little it was clearing, dissipating along with the wind. You hear a loud THUD, and Ada is pushed forth out of the smoke, both arms crossed over her face. Her shoes skidded, kicking up grass and dirt, and her hands were letting off rippling heat waves.

“She tried to go for my face, but I blocked it.” Ada twisted to smirk at you, making sure you knew she still felt fine. “Let’s return the favor, but this time, I’m breaking her nose!”

Something Ive always wondered is if attacks are merely special techniques and conventional cqc is still on the table. Tackle for example is a sudden burst of speed that slams into the opponent. Obviously the CQC wouldn't do as much damage as a standard move but it's worth a shot and it would be the perfect set up for a point blank ember.

If Ada wanted to break that girl’s nose, then who were you to say no! Once more, you let loose another wide sweep of your arm to release the attack dog.

“Tackle her, Ada!” If that Leer you caught through the smoke landed, then this’ll hurt a lot more than it needed to. Ada rolled her shoulders and popped her neck with two swift jerks of her head. More crackles of light from the backs of her hands, and she was diving into the smoke. Her momentum repelled the black haze, carving a straight tunnel through with the pink-haired girl standing dazed at the end. You saw her expression register everything for a split second, then there was impact. Using her shoulder as a battering ram, Ada crashed into her dead-on. A sickening crunch, bone against bone, rippled through the ground. The other Pokemon was sent tumbling against the dirt in flips before she finally edged to a stop, face up. She let out a heavy groan.

“Fuck, that HURT.” The brawny trainer rushed over, kneeling down to get a closer look. A mumbled exchange of words was all you could overhear. You assumed he was making sure she was good to go. A few seconds later, she propped herself up on one elbow, clutching her chest with a decent amount of effort. Ada’s shoulder made direct contact with her ribs, you’d be surprised if she didn’t feel a bit dazed, but despite the heavy hit, the other Pokemon had a fairly impressive recovery time, up on her feet in no less than a minute. Her skirt and top had blotching, charcoal stains smeared across the front and back, and you knew you’d hear her raise hell about it later.

By now the Smokescreen had molded with the wind, clear enough that you had steady view of both Pokemon. Illya's body was crumpled, labored breaths sputtering out of her in uneven puffs.

“Try for a Pound!” The other trainer shouted, an optimistic shift in his voice, probably trying to support her. Her legs buckled, but snapped up straight in order to push her forward, running full dash at Ada. Her arm reared itself back mid-sprint, and she forced her strength into a drilling punch that drove into Ada’s right cheek, but with hairpin precision, Ada clamped her arms around Illya’s forearm, locking her into place. She had sprung a bear trap, and now she was gonna reap the consequences.

“Hey, Kou, can I BBQ this bitch now?” Ada’s voice sunk, rasping out with malice. One more direct hit from her will end this fight, but you didn’t want to send her to a hospital, still, the opportunity was too good.

Securing their first battle in a landslide victory would polish anyone’s ego like jewelry, but letting your logical judgment steer itself based on nothing more than malicious intent was not the type of trainer you wanted to become either. Sending this woman to the emergency room would leave quite the sour taste in your mouth and you’d rather not be burdened with that kind of feeling today.

“Just put her in a headlock till’ she surrenders.” Your hands shoved themselves into your pockets, unsure how this choice will go over with her. She sent you a pointed glare, smoke falling out of her nose in wisps. Her gaze turned back to Illya. You pick up a stubborn grunt from her, before she wrapped both arms around the Fairy-type’s neck, hefting her upwards just enough to pressure her into a white flag forfeit. Easily, Illya pats Ada on the leg as a silent Uncle, and Ada releases her hold. No referee was present to call an official victory, but you took it upon yourself to walk towards Ada yourself to give your congratulations. She performed well, followed orders, and had composure and restraint where needed. A less skilled Fire-type may very well have lit this entire field ablaze.

“Well, Kou, not too shabby, eh? Aren’t you glad you picked me?” She teetered to and fro on her feet. Admittedly you really thought this fight would be a lot tougher, but perhaps this was the benefit of academy-trained Pokemon. You chalk up a mental note to treat Ada to something later.

“Shit, you really aren’t half-bad, huh?” The jock had his cap removed, one hand smoothing over his hair. “Name’s Jin Isu.” Once he fitted that hat back on you were offered an extended hand, to which you happily obliged with a shake. You made sure to keep your hand grip firm.

“Kou. Kou Takagi. Thanks for the battle, and uh- sorry about uh-”

“UGHHHHH, my fucking CLOTHES.” Illya was taking her loss as well as she probably could be. Physical conditions didn’t even seem to take any kind of consideration in her perspective. She simply fussed over her outfit, nearly on the verge of a meltdown.
“Sorry ‘bout her, you should’ve seen the other two, though.” Jin chuckled into his wrist, flashing a sort of affectionate gaze at Illya. They were probably gonna fuck in a week’s time, you’d bet money on it.

“She was really focused during the battle, at least! I really thought with how small she is she wouldn’t be able to take any good hits.” You gave a thoughtful raising of an eyebrow.

“Just wait ‘till I evolve her, dude. Get some Dazzling Gleam, a couple defensive moves, hoo!”

The two of you discussed movesets and strategies for a while longer, but there were still plenty things to get to today, and you were already at the cusp of afternoon.
>>
“Hey, maybe I’ll see you around sometime, Kou! Take it easy!” They made their exit, waving enthusiastically at you and Ada as they walked away. Now, onto your own agenda. There were a handful of things that needed your attention today, but the first thing on your mind was-

Introducing your first Pokemon to the parentals was a long-standing tradition, one of the first steps most trainers usually took. You thought it only natural to take Ada back home first and foremost, at least before your journey really started to kick off. After a casual once over, making sure most of the dust was patted off your jacket, you gesture for Ada to follow you back to the main road. New Bark Town wasn’t a large settlement by any means so it would take hardly any time to make it back. The road angled itself down a gentle slope, the Pokemon Lab perched at the top of a small hill. Below you could easily make out the curving paths that weaved through houses, shops, and the occasional small farm. A healthy variety of trees padded the small town, and vibrant patches of flowers nestled themselves against streets and houses. You were familiar with most every face in town, which was common for anyone who grew up here.

“Man, this place is homey.” Ada settled into a relaxed stroll beside you, and studied your hometown with a serene expression. “Compared to Goldenrod...it’s so quiet.” She huffed a quiet laugh. “You grew up here?” Without turning to her you maintained conversation.

“Yeah. All my life. Of course I’ve visited other cities n’ stuff, but for the most part I’ve just stuck around here.” Aside from there being few career prospects in New Bark, you had very few complaints. The people were nice. The seasons were mild. Crime was almost non-existent, save for the handfuls of rowdy kids that felt like vandalizing every few months. You had no issues with a quiet life, just, you figured a change of pace would do you a lot of good.

There was a span of silence shared between you two for a few minutes, accompanied only by the quiet chirps of faraway bird Pokemon, and the crunching of dirt beneath both of your feet.

>Try and stimulate the conversation with some small talk.

>Enjoy the quiet walk. Silence with Ada might be a luxury on this journey.

You nudge the silence with a restrained clearing of the throat. Ada makes no physical acknowledgement of your presence, but you continue anyways.

“Got any ideas for lunch? I think Mom and Dad might try to make us something but there’s some decent restaurants in town, too.” It wasn’t as if lulls in conversation bothered you, but you really did want to prod at Ada a bit more for today, learn what she’s into, what she dislikes, generally try and feel things out so you had a fair shot at being a responsive, self-aware trainer.

“Hmmm, are your parents GOOD at making food? Cuz’ my parents love to brag about what great chefs they are but man- they really don’t know what to do with seasonings.” She rolled her neck out, keeping her gaze fixed on the road.

“I’d say they’re pretty good. Dad’s roast can be kinda dry sometimes but it’s got flavor, at least.” Part of you hoped she decided to stay and eat your folks’ cooking. It’ll be the last home cooked meal you’ll have for a while, at least outside of the occasional visit, and you know it’ll make your parents grateful if you ate with them.

“Mm- then let’s try it out! But if their cooking sucks I’m holding you to it.” Her shoulder nudged into you, a playful gesture. You couldn’t help the warm glow that settled in your stomach. It wasn’t a flustered glow, just a satisfied feeling. It was incredibly lucky that you got a Pokemon so spirited and easy to talk to. If Yui or Katsumi were here now you imagined it might be a bit more of a challenge to lead a natural conversation like this.

“So- Kou.” You perk up at your name. “...you really think it’s gonna work out with uh- with me?” Now she had turned to look at you, a sort of lighthearted, yet sincere expression of doubt. “I know I talk a big talk and like- maybe you thought I’d be super cool all the time! But uh, to be honest I wasn’t really sure I’d get this far, haha.” You blinked. It took a few moments to really register what she was saying. Was this really the same loud-mouthed idiot you met back in the Lab?

“Ada?”

“I mean I KNOW this is like- WEIRD, but I...I couldn’t let those other two knuckleheads know I was nervous! But now that we’re here I guess I- well pff, I dunno.” She kind of fiddled with her tie, unsure of what to really do with her hands.

>Reassure her that you fully trust your partnership.

>>
>>4180181

>Admit you’re nervous too, you’re not really sure what to expect. But reassure her that we trust in her as our partner and that we will get through this together
>>
Being sure to do it softly, you lay a hand across her back. Despite how hot her clothing burned, you kept yourself steady.

“It’s ok. I’m nervous, too. But we got each other now! We can make it work, no matter what happens.” As much as it might sound patronizing, you meant every word you said. Historically, you were not the best at offering sympathies, but you were going to have to try hard with Ada especially. She was your Starter.

“...Yeah. You’re right. I’m kinda glad I’m not the only one with the jitters!” Light returned to her eyes, and relief cooled your nerves. “S’long as we’re prepared it’ll be hard to fuck it up! I can’t wait to train!” Both of you shared an innocent chuckle.

“You said you’re from Goldenrod, right?” You recalled her mentioning it a few minutes ago.

“Yeah. I was ACTUALLY born in Kalos. Shalour City. Parents moved to Johto when I was like, I dunno, nine? Feels like forever ago. Almost ten years.”

“Why’d they move?”

“Eh, new job. I think we coulda moved back to Kalos if we wanted but they ended up really liking it here. Something about nicer people.” She grinned at you. “Enrolled at the academy when I was old enough, and the rest is history!”

“...Did you guys have like, majors at the academy?”

“Mmmm, kinda. We had like- branches? I was a sports gal! Bet you never coulda guessed that! HAH!” You couldn’t determine whether that was sarcasm. “I think Yui was into like, nursing or something, and Katsumi … well she was like- the top student. Did a bit of everything. Teachers sucked her dick.” Ada recounted this with a hint of bitterness in her tone. You could only assume Ada didn’t have stellar grades, and still carried that chip on her shoulder. But at the end of the day she’s the one who got a trainer, right?
>>
“Pokemon school is a bit different from uh- regular, human school, right?” She ran a few fingers through her hair. You gave it a bit of thought.

“From what I hear, yeah. None of us can breathe fire so I imagine it’s a lot more boring. A lot of studying. Reading. Writing. Stuff like that.”

“Blech. I hated reading. I probably woulda dropped out, ehehehe. I only stuck around the academy cuz I got to beat people up a few times a week!” You cracked a smile.

“Good thing you’re the one on the frontlines, then.”

“...Hmmm, did your school have jerks n’ shit, too? Bullies or whatever. God, there was so much dick measuring at my school. It usually ended violently, what with everyone havin’ attacks. I’m sure you can imagine the weaker Pokemon really had a rough time. Knew a Castform dude. He really sucked, heh, but y’know, he really was a nice dude. Just kinda … wimpy.”

“Our school definitely had bullies. They never bothered me much but uh- I saw them in action quite a bit…” You wiped a hand across the back of your neck. There were a choice number of times where you had offered to help those under the scrutiny of the schoolyard bullies, but like most others, dipping your head and minding your own business was the safer option. By no means were you a coward, you just never considered your odds favorable if you were to ever fight someone fist to fist.

“People who need to pick on others to get their cock wet fucking piss me off, man. Like- just go kick soda cans like a regular person.” Ada mindlessly scratched at her face. “...Hm, y’know, I GOTTA ask, Kou.” A worryingly sneaky grin snaked its way onto her face. “You have any uh- SWEETHEARTS in school? A crush? A GIRLFRIEND? A….” Paused. “....well, I’m open-minded...a BOYFRIEND?” Her eyebrows raised up and down like some wise-cracking imp. You inwardly groaned.

But Im gonna fight for more women and the opportunity to actually get some character depth from at least theee before letting myself devolve.

That's not always the case, I've seen a quest where a girl won the bowl before she even appeared. This seems like a quest where this could be the case, if one Pokemon wins out in public opinion as the most fuckable Pokemon if they became a monster girl then the moment a girl of that particular species appears they will immediately win. If this quest goes multi-regional I'll put my money down on pic related, can you imagine if this was a human girl. Strong Arms, thicc as fuck thighs, massive titties, 6 foot 3 on average, a muscled midriff as hard as iron the width of a tree trunk, hot damn. Machamp girls are good too can you even imagine what can be done with 4 arms. One thing I just realized is since Pokemon are basically humans with powers does that stop them from becoming gym leaders? Is it legal for someone to be both a trainer and a Pokemon at the same time it wouldn't be too unreasonable for one strong Pokemon to lead 5 others and be the last one in the roster. What if Bea was a Sawak species the entire time?

Harem will almost always suck.

The dream of women flopping over each other is an entertaining dream, but that's all it is. It generally doesn't allow for good development, just entertainment. Even when successful, it isn't the same.

Im only okay with it if being a player is a primary goal and we're willing to break hearts because romance is 5th rung compared to getting all the shit we want in life done.

I have an idea. I remember that /v/ had these contests for which Pokemon they thought was the best. They conducted these by having people eliminate Pokemon until there was only one left that was crowned the definitive best, by adapting the criteria from being eliminating Pokemon you don't like to eliminating Pokemon you don't want to date it could be easily adapted as a logical solution to the waifu wars. I'll start, Bellsprout.

To make this fair you can't eliminate another Pokemon until a different anon has made an elimination. So you an't eliminate another Pokemon until someone else has had a turn.

I'd prefer to encounter pokemon randomly like in the games rather than trying to find a specific one. There's no way to predict the personalities of a pokemon, a Cyndaquil could be timid or brave, there was no guarantee that all of them turn out like Ada

“Uh- well, I guess I dated a bit. Here and there. They never really lasted more than a few months.” As much as you didn’t frequent the dating scene, there were momentary lapses of time where you did find someone. It’d go through the regular cycle of puppy love, stagnation, then mutual break up. None of them ended in hellfire like some people you knew. “...and there was one person. A...A girl. We kinda grew up together. Childhood friend kinda deal. I really liked her, but I guess I didn’t wanna fuck it up. So I just kinda didn’t say anything.” Ada whistled next to you.

“Wow. Not sure whether to call you a cool guy or a total pussy.” You sort of clicked your tongue at her response.

“I don’t think she liked me that way, regardless. Not really sure what she’s up to now. I think she wanted to become a scientist or a Professor.” From what you could remember of her interests, your friend always had a keen interest in research. Perhaps you’ll run into her on your journey, assuming she didn’t move to some other region after graduation. “What about you, then? Any flings you’d like to share with the class?”

Ada sort of lifted her shoulder, an impromptu shrug.

“Mmm, nah. I mean- first of all I ain’t into that lovey-dovey shit, second of all, there were NO good catches at my school, TRUST ME. All rich or snobby or just plain assholes. Not like they’d be able to keep up with me anyways.” Her arms folded themselves behind her head. “...But man, when Pokemon fuck, they FUCK. You’d walk into a classroom and there’d just be fuckin’ burn marks all over the desks an’ walls. Fucking gross.” It had never occured to you until now, but superpowered sex DID seem a bit...dangerous. What if you fucked an Ice-type? Would you just freeze? Or a Poison-type? An Electric-type? You withered at the thought. “Who knows though, maybe we’ll fetch you a REAL looker while we’re out questin’.”

Pretty soon both of you were approaching your childhood home. Unassuming picket fence gated off a slightly overgrown, yet well-loved garden, and a mailbox with chipped paint. A wind chime dangling over the front entrance rang out, jostled by the soft breeze. You let yourself inside, leaving shoes at the door and making your attendance known.

“Mom! Dad! I’m baaack!” From above you heard heavy footsteps plunk down hallways, and descending the staircase.

“Oh, sweetie! How was it?” A bubbly, older voice led itself into the foyer where you both stood, and around the corner popped out your mom. Straight hair laced with grey tied up in a loose bun and a floral dress that hung down to her knees. She embraced you, peppering your face with sloppy Mom kisses. You fought the instinct to shove her off, knowing you should allow her this small luxury the day before you leave FOREVER. “Is this uh- your Pokemon, then?” Her hand let itself linger on your shoulder, bright smile now directing itself to Ada. “It’s a pleasure to meet you! I’m Noko.”

“Ada!” You watched your Cyndaquil partner stiffen, exchanging a brief and awkward handshake. You wondered why she didn’t use Brightburn as an introduction. Probably nervous. “Yeah we just uh- got back from our first battle actually! Your son is a real natural!” Your mom waved her hand, giggling.

“Well, you know, dear, the apple does NOT fall far from the tree!” You had no idea what that meant. Your Mom was not a trainer. “Come in! Come in! Make yourself at home!” She ushered you inside, planting both of you on the living room sofa. Your home was not very large, but what little space you did have sparkled with impeccable care. Mom always occupied herself with the routine tidying and decorating of the residence, and from what you could smell, she had lunch plans all booked up for you both.

“How was it, Kou? Was it scary? Did they yell at you? You didn’t lose your wallet did you? Or drop your phone? How were the others? Oh! Tell me everything!”

“I can explain it all over lunch. You’re making something in the oven, I’m guessing.” You drew in a deep breath. It was probably some type of roast or casserole, definitely meaty. Spiced. Mom had always been a better cook than Dad, though they tried to swap who cooked each night. You were thankful today landed on her shoulders.

“I have to celebrate my baby boy leaving the nest, after all! Thanks for not ditching and eating Lucha Bell like you usually do.” You winced. Of course up to the very last moment at home she’d find some way to scold you like a teenager. Ada wore a content smile as she watched your Mom set the table, a full bouquet of local flowers crowning the middle of the tablecloth. “So, Ada...tell me a little bit about yourself! Are you nervous? Where are ya from? Oh! I wanna know everything!” Ada gave the same general spheal about her hometown, academy life, etc. that you had heard, with a significant reduction of swear words and raunchy attitude. She also stubbornly refused to admit she had any cold feet. Ada Brightburn never felt anxious, after all.

“Is this the part where we look at embarrassing, naked baby photos of Kou? It’s what happens in the movies.” Ada practically made an attempt to sign your death warrant, but thankfully, your Mom only supplemented her with laughter.

“Oh, Ada! You’re a hoot! I wish I knew where I put Kou’s baby photos. Probably in the attic? Hahaha!” You shrank into the couch. The cushions welcomed you, promising escape from whatever this conversation was turning into.

“Where’s Dad anyways?” You aggressively tried to change the subject.

“Oh he went out to run some errands, dear. He’ll be back soon, though! I made him promise to join us for lunch, but you know how busy he always is.” She gave a passive wave of her hand. Your Father was quite the popular man. Always going out with ‘the boys’ and attending community events. Normally you’d consider it difficult living under the shadow of someone so well-liked, but you were just happy for him. Your parents were never really the type to pile unneeded pressure on you, so you mostly took things in life at your own pace. “It’ll still be a bit before lunch is ready, so get comfortable, kids.”

“We can help you in the kitchen if you need it, Mom.” There wasn’t much else available to pass the time, and squeezing some last minute cooking tips out of her wouldn’t hurt either. “Ada, do you wanna help?”

“Long as I’m not in the way. Too many cooks in one kitchen is bad, Kou.” You heard your Mom haw from the kitchen.

“Truth! Your Father tries to backseat chef me ALL the time, when he should just get his butt out of the kitchen!” She rummaged through some cabinets, motioning for you to come. “Ada you just relax, Kou will be more than enough to help!” Once you got close enough she thrust a large, steel bowl into your arms. “Hun, find the salad mix in the fridge and wash it up for me.” You did as you were told, unpackaging the leafy greens and tossing them in cold water, making sure to rub your fingers along the stems and between leaves. You made sure to glance at your Mom every now and again, watching her chop up vegetables and prepare some type of glaze.

Ada sprawled out in the living room, scrolling through her phone, supposedly on some type of social media. You weren’t super involved in any of those sites, as much as your friends might pressure you. The occasional breeze wiggled its way through the house, sneaking in through some open window. Mom assigned you to check on a large bowl, discovering it was risen bread dough, probably for her dinner rolls. Carefully, you ran your palms over handfuls of dough, shaping them and packing them away inside of some baking pan. Mindlessly you let yourself stare at the house, knowing it’ll be the last time you see it for quite a while. The way the wood grain swirled along the floor boards, or the family photos that hung in ornate frames on the walls. The small pockets of dust that your Mom had missed, collecting in corners on the ceiling. You were going to miss home, but you had no doubt that Mom or Dad would give you regular phone calls, so feeling homesick might be easier to fend off.

A familiar clunking noise echoed through the house, the garage door making its trademark sound. It had to be your Dad.

>Run out to greet him!

>Hide behind the garage door for a surprise attack.

>Keep rolling out the bread, wait for him to come inside.

Setting the dough aside, you dashed towards the garage door, pressing yourself against the wall for a sneak attack. You heard the knob turn, and as soon as it opened, you pounced. Tackling your Dad, only to have him immediately scoop you up into a strangling hold.

“Not so fast, kid. I may be old, but I’m not THAT old.” You kicked your legs, trying to peel those massive arms off your neck. He’s always been incredibly strong, but that’s a given. Your Dad was a Pokemon, a Fraxure to be more specific. Him and Mom met a long time ago, but neither were interested in battling, they simply fell in love and had a kid. He moved to Johto from Unova as a kid. Sometimes, if you get him in the right mood, he’ll recall long stories from his time in Unova, and since you’ve never visited, you always found it to be incredibly interesting. “So how was it, huh? Where’s your Pokemon?” His fist was drilling into your head, an aggressive noogie that you probably deserved. He practically dragged you into the kitchen, lighting up once he saw Ada. “Is that her? Hey! Nice to meet you! I’m Hiro!” Only then did he decide to release you, stomping over to shake her hand and exchange introductions.

You picked at your hair, smoothing it back to normal. Your Father was quite the character. Ada was drowning in his questions and inquiries, doing her best to keep up with him. You went back to rolling dough balls. The oven was already preheated, so you popped them in above the roast, it was almost done.

“Dear, go grab your son’s things from upstairs. Save him the trip. It should have all the things he needs. Let Ada relax for a bit.” Your Mom practically scolded your Dad, who acknowledged her with a huff and a smile, peeling out of the living room to run upstairs. “Lunch is almost ready so if you kids wanna take a seat at the table go ahead.”

You and Ada sat next to each other. You were fairly hungry before you got home, but with how the house smelled right now it was impossible to ignore the voracious growling in your stomach. Ada looked fairly peckish, too. She kept staring into the kitchen, licking her lips every few minutes.

Your Dad returned, backpack slung over his shoulder. It was the bag your parents got you for graduation. It was large enough to carry anything you’d need on the journey while also being fairly lightweight. He set it down near the living room, and took the seat right beside you.

Wait so like what's the ratio there. Our mom seems to be human. So is it just a toss up for whether or not you're a human or pokemon at that rate.
>>
>>4193921
I think it's whatever the mom is like the game, we might have some residuals from having a pokemon as a dad

“...So, Dad.” You angled yourself to face him, hands cupped in your lap. Mom had already put down salad and chopped fruit as a pre-lunch snack, and he was helping himself to a chunk of berry. “Do you have any last minute words of wisdom before my big day? I know you love giving me unsolicited advice, but today I’m soliciting.” He tossed you a pensive look, fruit juice dribbling down his chin. Swallowing, he moved as if to reply, though your Mom interjected.

“Don’t get into weird cars with strangers, hun. And no midnight forest hikes! Stay on the main roads after sunset, you hear me?” You swiveled, side eyeing your Mom who shook a wooden spoon at you. It was a tad cliche for her to be spouting warnings you’d give to a mere child, which of course she’s said to you many times before. Look both ways before crossing the street, don’t give out personal information to strangers, always check the weather forecasts. You couldn’t resist the half-hearted roll to your eyes, stabbing a bit of lettuce with your fork. As you shoved your forkful into your mouth, Dad’s hand slapped itself firm across your back, almost making you choke.

“Well, kid. There ain’t much I haven’t told you up till’ now. But just remember not to put yourself under too much pressure, yeah? Have fun. It’s about the learning experience more than anything, after all, and if things get stressful don’t be afraid to call me or your Mom for help. We’re always here. Hell, even have a heart to heart with your Pokemon from time to time, give em’ the ol’ pep talk.” He lifted his water glass, taking a long, thoughtful sip. “...I know too many trainers who got too caught up in winning that they just- well, they just stopped takin’ care of themselves. Real sad to see em’ self-destruct. But we raise you right, I know you’ll make the good decisions.” He had a point. Plenty trainers that plunge themselves into their dreams too hard end up cracking under pressure. Most quit, pack their bags, dissolve their teams and head home, but others simply spite the world around them. Turning to lives of crime, or abusing their teammates to the point of mental collapse. The competition can be high intensity, and if you aren’t prepared to shed sweat and tears, then it’ll knock you out on your ass.
>>
“Kou here told me he intended on becoming Champion,” Ada grinned at you past her cup. “...normally I’d call him a liar...but after our first battle he might just have the chops to do it.” Her eyes flickered down to her plate, spoon pushing around some stray bits of salad. Something in her expression seemed to glow, was it excitement?

“Champion’s all fine and dandy, sweetums but you can settle for uh- teacher, or a gym leader, or maybe a breeder! Those make good money!” Your Mom tried to let your dreams down easy, offering alternatives if Grand Champion didn’t quite work out.

“Breeder? Really, Noko? Those are just glorified matchmakers, hardly a respectable career.” Your Dad seemed to wilt at the idea, motioning for her to bring him the basket of dinner rolls, now freshly baked and buttered. He grabbed two, tearing into the first with sharpened teeth.

“I just don’t want him all depressed if it doesn’t work out, hun. You know how Sami’s kid had his uh-” She waved her hands above her head, trying to mime out some abstract feeling. “PHASE, I guess. Was all convinced he’d discover God or something, but after a year out of the house he just gave up, poor thing. Just lives in his folk’s basement now.” You felt a shudder in your neck. Even if your lifelong dream of Champion didn’t pan out in the end, there was no way you’d confine yourself to the basement. At the very least, some small apartment a few towns over.

“Oh, and make sure to have fun once in a while, kid.” You pulled apart one of the rolls, making occasional eye contact with your Dad as he continued. “It’s not all about battling and training. Visit a beach, go to a party, make some friends, all that jazz. You’re in your youth, live a little. We won’t get mad if you drink a bit either-”

“HIRO.” Mom snapped, flinging daggers with her eyes. “I don’t want you drinking, Kou. NO DRUGS EITHER. Lord knows how slippery that slope is!” She was all up in arms now, pacing the kitchen and aggressively slapping plates and pots together, flustered at the idea of her little baby doing a drug. While she was occupied, you caught your Dad give you a wink and a thumbs up. All you could do was run a hand over your face and shove bread into your gullet. Ada did nothing but chortle at you, mouth still crammed full of salad.

>Promise Mom you won’t do a single alcohol or drug. Cross your heart.

>Give a wink and a thumbs up to Dad. You were by no means a druggie, but a party here and there couldn’t hurt.

Once you were sure Mom wasn’t watching, you reciprocated to your Dad, sending your own wink and thumbs up. He chuckled, a rumble in his chest.

Before too long, side dishes and entrees were decorating the long, wooden table. Glazed vegetables, deviled eggs, mashed potatoes, wild rice, and Mom’s spiced gravy. It seemed more like a holiday feast than a farewell lunch, but you weren’t about to complain. Mom certainly slaved away for hours on this meal, probably since before you woke up.

“Well, shit, dear, this is quite the spread. You did this all yourself?” Dad began piling his servings, haphazardly blending everything on his plate until it amalgamated into mush.

“Mmhm. I wouldn’t have to do it by myself if SOMEONE got up on time.” She shot him a pointed stare, half-joking smirk tugging her mouth. “But it’s nothing a bit of elbow grease and podcasts can’t fix, hm! The roast should be done, lemme fetch it. Help yourself, Ada, please! You’ll need all the strength you can get today!”

“Thanks, ma’am. It smells GREAT.” The merry clinking of silverware against plate was all the ambience one needed. Everyone passed the serving bowls around, Dad taking responsibility to cut the roast for everyone, Mom finally finding the chance to sit down and relax. For the first few minutes no one said a word. Good food never needed much commentary in your experience. Everyone was far too busy eating to really bother saying much. It wasn’t until Ada’s plate was nearly clean that she began to speak, already reaching over the table to claim her seconds.

“So- we going to Cherrygrove first?” She made no effort to look at you, though you assumed her question was meant for no one else. “It’s kind of a small town, but there’s probably some decent battles there. It’s not like we’ll be ready to take on the first gym right away, might as well do some sight seeing.” Ada drizzled a bit of gravy over her vegetables, the amber liquid pooling.

>Yeah, it’ll take some training before you’re comfortable taking on any gym at this point. But training and hard work will be what works best.
>Nah, let’s just go straight to Violet City, we can take care of any training once we’re there.

>It might be worth it to explore some off-road destinations, there’s a lot that isn’t included on most maps.

I'd like to head through the forest to, maybe Catalia City. You're not afraid of bug types, are you?
>>
"...Actually, Ada, it might be worth our time to do some off-road exploration. Check out any places that might not be marked on regular maps." The path to the Elite Four was straightforward, all things considered. There was an established order one was meant to challenge each Gym, the last one located in Blackthorn City. From there, you'd head into Victory Road for the ultimate test of skill. Of course, taking a nonconventional route across Johto was completely open to you. “Catallia City isn’t too far from here, and it’s on the way to Cherrygrove, too. Same with Florando City. There’s a lot of options.” Dad contributed with a nod and a grunt.

“Good thinking, kid. Make sure you see as much stuff as you can while you’re out there, there’s a lot of places that new trainers overlook their first time going.”

“Wherever you decide to go is fine by me, just as long as we’re not just actin’ like we’re on vacation.” Ada pumped you a thumbs up, a blotch of gravy staining the side of her mouth. “More chances we have at building up a decent team before the gym the better.” She was right. If you were going to take on a gym leader then just having one Pokemon was risky. It’s not like they got where they were on pure, dumb luck. It took strategy, and you were convinced Ada’s brute strength wouldn’t get past everything, no matter how strong she might get.

Lunch ended almost as soon as it began. In no more than an hour everyone lounged back in their seats, stomachs full and plates scraped clean. Despite every attempt to hold back, you still managed to overeat, though luckily not to the point of sickness. Straining to rise from your chair, you offer Ada an encouraging pat on the shoulder. It was time. Mom gathered up all the dishes, prepping the kitchen for her arduous ritual of a post-feast cleanup, while your Dad helped you check through your backpack, making sure all the necessary supplies were stocked up. Potions, food rations, a bedroll, spare clothes, medicines, toiletries, and a pretty wad of cash for the road, on top of what you managed to save up to this point. It certainly wasn’t a light load, but you could handle it.

Once everything was prepared, everyone gathered towards the front door, Mom preening over you with flushed face, holding back tears. She pushed back your hair, adjusted your jacket, and took care to stuff your pockets full of hard candy. Part of you felt embarrassed, but you knew it was right to give her one last opportunity to poke and pick at you like you were a kid again.

“Oh, baby, I’m so proud of you...make sure you call me every week, okay? And I’ll send you care packages as often as I can! Oh- and don’t you dare ruin that sleep schedule. You’ll need your eight hours every night. And don’t talk to strange men. And be smart with your money. And-”

“Noko.” Dad cleared his throat, interrupting what could’ve been a straight hour of talking. “He’ll be fine. He’s practically an adult.” She fluttered her eyes, hovering her fingers over your face before pulling back with a nod.

“I know...I just worry.” She seemed to force a brave smile for you, eyes sparkling with pride, and a bit of sadness. “I...know you’ll do great. We’re already so happy for you.” Dad wrapped an arm around her for comfort, and gleamed down at both you and Ada.

“You take care of him alright? Don’t let him do nothin’ stupid.”

“Of course. We’re partners, after all.” Ada beamed, energy sparking off of her like fireworks.

“Alright, best be on your way now. It’ll be evenin’ before too long.”

>There was an established order one was meant to challenge each Gym, the last one located in Blackthorn City.
Have you seen Pokémon Origins?
The route there is free and gym leaders pick their team based on the badges the challenger has.
Makes the early gym leaders look less like wimps just because game logic. And even then, neither Jotho nor Kanto were completely linear.

watching origins and generations again I'm getting myself hyped

Origins should be on any anime streaming site, and generations is on youtube for those who don't know

I could have y'all just be able to challenge the leaders in whatever order you wanted but I figured it'd be easier planning wise for me if we stuck to the traditional line up, though I'm up for suggestions if that's not what people want :)

in lore I'd suggest making some gyms starter gyms where trainers can go without a badge while for others you have to have X amount of other badges.
