Somewhere in the Scottish highlands, a great locomotive barrels through the countryside. Its destination is Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, a world-renowned academy of magic, and its compartments are packed with young students.

A young boy sits alone. He stares out the window in silence, watching the world speed by with nothing but the voices in his head for company. The boy holds a worn envelope in one hand and a wand in the other.

You are this boy. At the moment you’re struggling to recall your own name.

Right, thank you. Your name is John Robert Finnegan-Smith.

John works just fine. Bob too, but it's been a while since anyone called you that.

You only recently turned eleven, when you received an acceptance letter in the post. You were not one to often receive mail, being an orphan and all, but you were strangely accepting of the fact that magic was indeed real. It certainly explained a few things from your past: that time you levitated a tea pot for starters.

You press your head against the glass and close your eyes with a sigh. You think upon your past and try to recollect.

Were you:

>An optimistic sort, always ready to seize the day. You always looked for the best in people and have fond memories of your childhood, and love your supportive foster parents.

>A pessimistic type. You were cynical at an early age and passed from foster home to foster home, being something of a troublemaker. You had just gotten kicked out when you received your letter.

>An dispassionate boy. More often than not you let the world pass you by, often feeling detached and unemotional. Many consider you a bit odd, including your guardian.

You agree, you’d consider yourself more dispassionate than anything. Passing through a column on your way to the train had been no more eventful to you than being given a magic wand. Maybe dispassionate isn’t the exact word for it, but you remember it coming out of your guardian's mouth more often than not.

Finding the countryside unengaging you pull your forehead off the window. You can feel the train buzzing with activity around you, in contrast to the silence of your compartment. There must be something to do to pass the time until you arrive at Hogwarts: you heard you’d arrive at night, and judging from the traces of sunshine it’ll be a while till then.

You hear some particularly loud noises in the hallway. It might do you well to stretch your legs, but you could always go through your luggage to make sure you’re all packed. With a grunt you get to your feet and place your wand in the pocket of your robe, which you’re still not quite used to.

What will you do?

Normally you would ignore the clamor, but you feel compelled to go take a walk. You open the doors to your compartment and slip out into the hallway.
The space is narrow and hard to move in, even for a first year. Someone begins yelling behind your back and it causes you to turn.

“What? WHAT?!”

A large boy stands off to one side, hunched over by the glass. You realize that he’s holding a phone in his hands, a device you haven’t seen in a record couple of days. He seems to be watching something intently and makes a kind of growling noise, though at what exactly you’re unsure.

Looking to the other side of the hallway you seek a dark shape leaning against the wall. A hooded figure is nestled between your compartment and the next, head down as it scribbles into a notebook. It stops for a moment, maybe aware of your staring, before it returns to its writings.

You could speak with them or move elsewhere in the train.

Leaving the irate boy to his lonesome, you approach the hooded figure.

It turns up to look at you, slightly shorter than you with its hunched posture. The hood's darkness swallows their face, though you can vaguely make out two eyes staring back with uncertainty.

"....yes?" they ask you hesitantly. She sounds like a girl around your age, and she seems more confused than anything.

"I... don't have any." She looks up and down the hallway, and you think she's looking for someone to help her, before she shakes her head. "I think there's a lady with a food trolley, but I haven't seen her."

She falls quiet as she stares at you from within her hood. Her voice is quiet, but she doesn't sound particularly concerned.

You ask the girl why she's wearing her hood up. You also mention that you think it's a bit weird, without much tact to soften the blow.

You hear her sigh softly from within the void. "Do you think so?" she
asks. You notice her glancing away for a moment. "I think it's nice sometimes, not having to hear or see as much. But that probably is weird."

She reaches up and tugs the hood down, revealing a pale girl with a short dark bob of hair. From the small bags under her eyes it looks as though she hasn't slept. When she smiles it looks a bit sad.

"Sorry. My name's Erza."

You introduce yourself to Erza, giving your entire name as you usually do. You watch her stare and reassure her that she can just call you John for short. She nods with relief.

When you ask her if she’d like to walk around she blinks in surprise. “Oh. Sure.” She pockets the dark notebook she was writing in, quickly enough so that you can’t make out her writings, and straightens up as she walks to join you. “That boy was getting kind of loud.”

You turn towards the boy in question and find that he’s disappeared. He must not have gotten too far, as you hear a throaty howl of anguish further down the corridor, but from the look on Erza’s face she doesn’t seem keen on investigating.

The two of you idly wander to the next compartment and find a small crowd gathering, kids of varying ages forming a circle. You open the doors and wander over to investigate, noticing Erza’s hands instinctively going for her hoodie before letting them fall.

“C’moooon,” someone whines, “give it baaaack!”

A small boy with greasy long hair reaches for a dangling camera, which a taller girl is holding above his head. The dark-skinned girl snickers as she holds his head down.

“Opal, please! It’s okay!” You notice a red-haired girl sticking her head out of the nearby compartment. “Give it back to him!”

Erza looks over at you with uncertainty, unsure how to proceed as you linger on the edge of the crowd.

Will you:

You force yourself into the center of the action and warn the tall girl about the Hogwarts payment policy, looking to dissuade her from further bullying. You hear the crowd murmur in surprise around you, half at your intervention and half at learning something new.

The tall girl squints at you for a moment, before she sneers. "Good thing I'm rich then," she tells you, her hand tightening around the camera as if goaded to crush it, "he won't miss zis piece of junk!" You hear the boy whimper a bit as her eyebrows narrow, and she turns her full attention to you. "Or are you going to try an' stop me?"

Her french accent contorts her taunts. She really wants you to try.

You offer the taller girl a trade: candy in exchange for the camera. This urges on another bout of murmurs in the crowd, and Erza nods to show that your candy fixation is no bluff.

The girl gives you a wide, crooked smile. "I think zat is fair. You will pay tribute." She stretches her u's a bit as she lowers the camera, before retracting it back when the boy tries to snatch it. "But I will come with you, so there is no funny business." The crowd parts to let the brutish girl through as she marches off towards the next car, beckoning for you and your wallet to follow.

"Hey, it's okay," you hear the redhead say, trying to soothe the camera boy, "you wanted to talk with me?" He murmurs something about an interview as you and Erza leave the group behind, following in the tall girls footsteps.

"I am thinking... three chocolate frogs, an' two bars of fudge to start," she says with a rumbling chuckle. Erza starts scribbling in her notebook and you see the totals of wizard coin start adding up fast. You know you have SOME sort of magic money, but are still unsure of the specifics.

Will you:
>Go through with the trade. A deal's a deal.

Take her aside. You have not only disgraced your family by stealing from others, but demanding payment for stolen goods. Now others will whisper that your families wealth is a farce, that they must steal from the poor in order to maintain their state of luxury.

You clear your throat to get the tall girl's attention. She stops right before the door to the next car, where you can see an old woman pushing along a cart of snacks. "What is it?" the girl asks you.

You explain to her that her current path is one of disgrace, to her character and to her family legacy. Warning her that her wealth is in danger of being seen as a farce in the wake of criminal actions, you tell her that she should return the boy's property.

The girls face darkens as she begins to get angry. "! How dare you talk about my family that way!" She closes in on the two of you and stares daggers from above as she continues. "Ze Brouillards are a noble house, de kind that would never stoop that low! Zat nosey little boy is ze trouble, not me. He would not go away!" Her eyes flit towards the camera in her hands and you see her begin to look uncertain, likely thinking on who is the villain here.

You ask the girl what exactly the camera boy did in the first place. Erza stays quiet as she stands by your side but nods, showing her interest as well.

The tall girl exhaled. "He was trying to bother Miss Potter when I was talking to her first. When he would not go away he tried bothering her with questions, so many questions!" She rolled her eyes and waggled the hanging camera. "I thought I would teach ze boy some manners."

Erza looks surprised for a moment, though you're not sure why. The situation now make some sense but you tell the girl you don't think that stealing his camera from him was the right choice. Particularly not for a noble like herself.

She thinks upon this for a moment and clicks her tongue. The hand holding her camera fell limp to her side. "Maybe you are right. There is ze image to uphold." It looks as though it pains her to admit it, and before she can continue the doors to the car swing open.

"Anything from the trolley dears?" asks the old woman, pushing along her cart covered in candy.

You tell the old woman you would like to buy some candy, reaching for your envelope in the depths of your robe. You shake out a few of the big gold coins inside and hand them over to the woman. You ask for three "chocolate frogs", hoping they taste better than they sound, but the woman chuckles merrily at the gesture and takes only one of them. "That's quite enough dearie," she assures you, giving you your change before handing three little boxes over to you. She scoots the trolley on ahead and leaves the three of you behind.

"Thanks." Erza gives you a small smile as you offer her one of the packages. The tall girl just looks confused and takes hers slowly. "I don't get it- "she begins, but when you remind her that a deal's a deal she smirks and nods at you. "Right. Thanks then."

As the three of you head back to find the camera boy, she introduces herself as Opal Brouillard. The surname is unfamiliar to you, though she promises that she comes from a family of esteemed aurors, a term which is equally unknown.

"Oi, you lot! Back to your cars now, we'll be at the castle shortly!"

An older boy in a cap pokes his head out at you, waving for you to get back to your compartments. You did notice the hallways were clearing out. "Damn," rumbles Opal, "better get zis back then." She waggles the camera and turns to head out.

Before Opal can run off, you ask if she'd like to join you and Erza in your compartment. You think the boy can handle a few more hours without his camera, or at least you'd like to hope so.

She cocks her head a bit in surprise. "Sure, that is ze best plan." She reaches into her robes and drops the camera out of sight, though she gives it a pat. "I promise I will not smash it."

Erza giggles, a barely audible sound as the three of you head into your part of the train. "You know, I was going to ask you back then if I could sit with you," she admits to you, "I was just embarrassed."

The three of you have all exchanged names by the time you arrive at your compartment, which is luckily still empty. You plop onto your chair, Opal sitting down heavily beside you with a sigh of relief. Erza sits across from the two of you and crosses her legs, pulling out her notebook again. The three of you relax in comfortable quiet.

You'll be arriving at Hogwarts shortly. You have some time to talk with the girls some more, or you could just take a nap.

"Oh, this..." She smiles awkwardly and scribbles wildly before pocketing the book again. "It's just for ingredients, like potions." She taps her fingers together, clearly wanting to change the subject, and you're unsure if she's telling the truth.

"Potions?" Opal scoffs a little. "What, are you some kind of Slytherin?"

Erza nodded. "Born and raised," she says.

"You can always change your mind," Opal offers. Erza chuckles softly.

Unsure what exactly they're talking about you move on.

You ask the girls what to expect from the Hogwarts wifi. Opal looks at you as if you're speaking in tongues. "The internet," Erza explains.

Opal laughs. "Ha! If zey don't have it in Beauxbatons, zey don't have it in Hogwarts." She shrugs at you. "Muggle things, muggle schools."

Erza looks at Opal with intrigue. "You've been to Beauxbatons?" she asked over, before noticing your expression. "It's a French magic school," she explains.

"ZE French magic school," Opal corrects. Her proud smile vanishes for a moment before she wags her hand from side to side. "Oh, well, I have been once or twice. Seen ze grounds." She crosses her arms and signals the end of that line of questioning.

You feel something vibrate in your hand. You realize your chocolate frog box has started moving. You were wondering if it was actually a frog in there, but now you're just worried if it's alive. Slowly, you crack open the box...

A brown lump springs into the air. Opal quickly grabs for it, holding a shiny brown frog by the leg. She smiles with satisfaction. "Got 'em." You watch as she plops the wriggling mass in her mouth. "I'll give you mine," she murmurs through the chocolate before pointing at your box, motioning at it. You look down and find a pointed card inside: a holographic figure is inside.

You take a closer look. A blonde woman smilles happily up at you, her gaze somewhat distant. You feel as though you've seen a similar expression in the mirror.

"Luna Lovegood," reads Opal, looking up at you and Erza with furrowed brows. "Who is zis?'

Erza shrugs her shoulders. "I don't know. I'll save mine for later," she tells the two of you, hiding away her box before pointing at Opal's. "What about yours?"

Opal carefully opens her box, letting the chocolate frog crawl onto her leg, before she scoops it up and places it in your free hand. You tighten it, unsure exactly what you want to do with the seemingly sentient chocolate, but turn when Opal makes an excited noise.

"Look at zat! Professor Longbottom!"

You look over at the card thrust in your face. A middle-aged dad stares back at you, a confident smile on his face. You're unsure why Opal seems so excited about him but you give her a nod all the same. The frog seems to have settled back into acting like regular chocolate for a moment, so you take the occasion to bite its head.

Biting on the last of your chocolate frog and questioning it entirely, you feel as though a nap is in order. Opal moves over to show Erza her new card, and you sink down into the corner of your chair to get some rest. You hear the girls chattering grow distant as you fall into slumber, and you sink into the abyss of sleep. However short it may be.

You float there in the darkness. You think for a moment you won't be dreaming, before you hear the distant sound of a lullaby.

You smile.

-

You awake to find Erza hunched over you, hesitantly prodding your shoulder. "Hey, we're here," she tells you, motioning with her head at the crowd of students pushing through the hallway. You see a flurry of robes mashing together as kids chatter loudly, and you grimace a bit at all the noise.

Thanking Erza you sit up and pat yourself, finding your coins and wands still on your person. You notice that Opal has disappeared. "She went to go find the camera guy," Erza tells you, before motioning quickly with her hand. "We should probably go."

You follow her lead, cramming in with the rest of the students as you slowly make your way outside, following the distant orders of the prefects.

-

The cool night's air hits you, waking you up even more as you are ushered onto the platform.

"First years, this way please, thank you!"

You and the other younger students are corralled towards one end of the station, while all the others head in the opposite direction. You notice some kinds of dark horses leading a line of carriages in the distance. How exactly are YOU getting to the castle?

"Over here now, over here! C'mon!"

A deep, albeit gentle voice guides you forward, and before you know it you're staring at the biggest man you've ever seen. You notice Erza looking up wide-eyed, and you follow her gaze up to a smiling face framed by a bushy grey head of hair.

"Yer a feisty lot, aren't ya?" asked the giant. "Welcome to Hogwarts!"

You fail to refrain from asking the large man why exactly he is so big. This prompts a good-natured chuckle from him, causing his lantern to shake a bit.

"Well, that's not the first time I've heard that one, and it won't be the last!" He pats his chest. "Me mum was a giant. All there is to it."

The crowd of amassed first years murmurs in awe behind you.

>>4162411

The giant man looked around with a smile. "If ya don't got any more questions, then follow me. Right this way!"

The giant walked off towards the end of the platform, descending down a stairway and motioning for you to follow. As you begin to follow him down a nearby hill, you hear Erza whisper to you. "I was wondering the same thing," she confides.

Before you know it you have reached the edge of a vast lake. You can make out a large structure on the other end, though it shimmers in a kind of fog at this distance. The giant waves you onto a long stretch of dock, and you watch as a number of boats begin to draw close.

Strangely enough, no one is rowing them.

"Alright, on you go now," the giant tells the group, "six to a boat! No more than that! Trust me on that one." He coughs and lets that hang in the air. "Well, if ya got friends, make yer groups now."

Erza glances at you and nods, before the two of you look for anyone you know. Opal is nowhere to be seen: you guess her being in another year would explain her height. You notice the camera boy off to one side, reunited with his camera at last, though he gives you a funny look and pretends to have not noticed you.

"Oh, would you like another?" someone asks. You notice it was the redheaded girl from earlier, the one that had tried to stop Opal in the first place. She smiles at the two of you. You struggle to recall a name... Potter something?

You think the girl seems nice enough, so you invite her into her group. She seems joyful to join the two of you. "My name's Lily!" she tells you, before asking more about the two of you.

You give her your entire name, which she sits through in rapture. "I'm just Erza," your companion tells her. Lily lets out a bubbly laugh in turn.

Before you know it the three of you are sailing across a giant span of lake, the boat propelling itself magically across the water towards your destination. You hear Lily's gasp in awe behind you.

https://youtu.be/Y6yzp-Fk9TM?t=96

An enormous castle glitters in the darkness, stretching across the hilltops as you approach. You stare at the sight in quiet wonder, your boat following the others as it approaches the docks. The torches of Hogwarts shimmer above you as you disembark and follow the long set of stairs. You seem to have become the guide for everyone now that the giant has waved you off. "I'll see you all at dinner!" he calls.

The wooden dock turns to stone as you realize you've entered the castle. A figure in dark robes is waiting for you at the top, tapping his foot and humming a tune as you come to a halt.

"It's him!" someone murmurs from behind. The crowd titters in surprise, your own eyes widening as you realize you've seen this man before. He looks a bit more impressive outside of a trading card. "The snake-slayer!" someone whispers.

"I remember when I was on those stairs..." Professor Longbottom says wistfully. He shakes his head and claps his hands together. "Welcome to Hogwarts!"

You take out your chocolate frog card and subtly try to compare the two Longbottoms. The one on the card seems a bit awkward, compared to the older man before you, who stands with a confident smile. You wonder how long it has been since the two were taken.

Professor Longbottom looks across the crowd. "In just a few moments, you will be sorted into your houses. They'll be just like your family while you're here at Hogwarts." He raises an eyebrow as he scans the crowd. "Hufflepuff..." he begins, hearing some murmurs in the crowd, "Ravenclaw.... Slytherin... and Gryffindor."

Someone whistles in the back. The crowd breaks into nervous laughter, though Longbottom laughs warmly. "Sorry, I couldn't help it," he admits. He looks over the crowd fondly before turning back to the nearby doors, as if to go check something.

"Sir, what about the house cup?" asks a boy in the crowd. Professor Longbottom whirls in place and wagged a finger, trying to find him.

"Right, right, the cup. Well, you all will be awarded points for good performance," he explained, "and the house with the most points will be awarded the house cup." He nodded and rubbed his hands together as if trying to start a fire, glancing behind him and watching the doors into the castle swing open. "Well then, on we go."

You follow the professor inside the castle. The halls are illuminated by torchlight. You notice suits of armor flanking the corners, their helmets turning to watch you pass. The professor stops before a a large set of doors and watches as they open before you.

An enormous hall stretches before you, with rows of young wizards clad in uniform that turn at your arrival. Candles float in the air above your head as you follow Longbottom to the front of the room, and as you look to the ceiling you notice it is covered in stars.

You can hear the older students murmuring behind you as the first year group fans out, forming a sort of half-moon in front of the professor. You become aware that you stand in front of a large table: a great many witches and wizards have their eye upon you.

The giant man from earlier sits among them, smiling in recognition as you catch his eye. A blonde braided woman eyes you curiously, while a sharp-nosed woman in green looks uneasy. A balding old man, leaning on a cane to the side of the table, scowls with utter contempt.

Chief among them sits a woman in flowing robes, her white hair trailing behind her hat as she rises. "Headmistress McGonagall has a few words for you all," exclaimed Longbottom, who smiles sheepishly and stands somewhat at attention.

You watch as the Headmistress gazes across the crowd. Her expression is stern when she begins to speak. "Let it be known to all of you, that until further notice the dungeons are to be closed to all students outside of Slytherin."

The hall explodes into chatter around you. When McGonagall coughs it seems to have been amplified tenfold, and the room quickly falls silent. "Slytherin students will be escorted to and from the common room during this time. All classes in the dungeons have been relocated."

Mcgonnagal waits until the whispers have ceased. "Also, Hogwarts will see another year guarded by our charmed sentinels." She waves her hands to the sides of the room, and on cue the suits of armor there salute. "You are advised to pay them no mind. They are here to ensure your safety, nothing more."

She looks around again, finding little protest. Her thin lips curl into a smile. "That is all I have to say. Now, let the sorting ceremony commence."

The room breaks into cheers as the Headmistress sits back down. Professor Longbottom smiles and pulls a large wrinkly hat from behind his back, which you're sure wasn't there before. He begins to read from a scroll.

"When I call your name, I shall place the sorting hat on your head, and you will be sorted into your houses." He looks at the scroll for a moment before looking for a figure in the crowd.

"John Finnegan-Smith?"

You take a step forward. You gaze up at Longbottom and nod, and he gestures to the stool in front of you. "Hop on up," he tells you.

It's easy to take a seat, but you're a little hesitant to look up at the crowd. Hundreds of students stare back at you in curiosity, four rows of tables garnished with color. The other first years stare at you in anticipation, Erza watching carefully as Lily offers you a smile. Even the camera boy from earlier can't help but stare. You wonder what is supposed to happen before you feel a shadow descend around you: the hat is being lowered.

Then, the hat begins to speak.

"Hrmm..." it muses, writhing a bit on top of your head, "curious, curious. I haven't seen a mind like this in ages." It made a tutting noise. "Not a good thing, mind you, not a bad thing either. Just curious..."

You sit helpless to the hat's musings as it continues. "I think I've got it now. Better be..." it began, before pausing.

Unknown to you, many voices cry out in unison, telling the hat you belong in...

You feel a prickling sensation in the back of your mind. The talking hat squirms a bit on top of your head. "Easy now! I hear you," it says as if responding to a cascade of voices you can't hear. "Looks like you've got some spirit in you after all." When it grumbles its voice is low: that was meant for your ears only.

"Well then..." it begins, pausing for dramatic effect. The hall holds their breath.

"HUFFLEPUFF!"

You watch as a table of students in gold trim rise to their feet, cheering with applause and waving you over. Your chest feels hot for a moment as you stare at the happy faces and you find yourself smiling back. Longbottom guides you off the chair and sends you of to your table, the other first years giving you nervous smiles along the way.

You receive several thumps on the back as your house makes room for you to sit with them. One older boy in particular, with curly blonde locks below his cap, offers you a firm handshake. "Welcome to Hufflepuff," he tells you with a grin. You begin to introduce yourself when Longbottom calls out another name. The boy nudges his head and you turn to watch the next first year be sorted. As the wrinkled hat calls out another house you find yourself distracted, and the din of the hall begins to fade as you think to yourself.

Now your story can truly begin. Of this you are certain.

The sorting ceremony continues. You have watched a number of unfamiliar first years be sent off to their houses, as well as a few that you recognize. The large angry boy turns out to be Jordie Tontson, who seems pleased with his placement in Slytherin. The camera boy is finally revealed as Jackson Fringe, as well as a place at the Gryffindor table.

"Erza Erstwhile?"

Longbottom calls out a name you know. As you watch Erza step towards the stool you hear some rumblings in the crowd, and when you look around you see several students whispering to one another. You listen in to a few girls near you. "Like, Grimbella Erstwhile? No way!" one of them exclaims, while the other looks equally intrigued. “I didn’t know she had a sister.”

Before you can ask them something the crowd settles down. You watch as the sorting hat mutters something inaudible to Erza, who has her eyes set upon the ground. She seems frozen in place for a moment before the sorting hat opens its mouth wide.

“HUFFLEPUFF!”

You rise to your feet with the rest of them, clapping happily as the perplexed looking Erza stumbles over to join you. She seems like she’s waking from a dream as she takes a seat beside you, finally blinking and snapping out of it as she’s jostled by friendly faces.

“I… didn’t expect that,” she manages. Her face looks paler than ever, yet when she turns back to the ceremony there’s a smile on her face all the same.

-

By the end of the sorting there’s only one girl remaining. A familiar head of red hair helps you identify Lily from the back. Longbottom’s eyes seem to twinkle when he reads her name.

“Lily Potter.”

The hall breaks into a commotion, though only for a second, as when McGonnagal looks as though she is about to rise it frightens the crowd into silence. Lily steps to the stool and shares a few words with Longbottom before hopping onto the stool.

"Well well, yet another Potter. I think I know just where to put you…” says the hat. It pauses, leaving the room in silence. You can feel tension stretch across the room.

“HUFFLEPUFF!”

Nobody moves. Then, you feel a surge of air as your house rises to its feet as one, hooting and hollering with a great deal of excitement. You try to clap along before realizing that people across the entire hall are celebrating for her.

“LILLLLLLLY!”

Some boys from Slytherin call out with a cheer. Lily herself remains on the stool, in something of a daze as an equally surprised-looking Longbottom helps her to her feet. “I REALLY didn’t expect that,” Erza tries to say to you over the din, shaking her head in wonder as you watch the new Hufflepuff find a seat.

McGonnagal takes a stand. She waits until the hall has grown silent, and you see the stern looking woman’s eyes are wet. She smiles.

“Now,” she says, “the feast begins!”

You watch as plates of delicious looking food appear from nowhere. Then you have the best meal of your entire life.

After the meal has concluded, you find yourself following the other Hufflepuffs through the castle corridors. A number of portraits turn their head to gossip as you pass, though you are aware that most of them seem to be talking about Lily.

You are also being stalked by a number of ghosts, which you are now aware are both real and also very much visible.

You pass through a number of halls that smell suspiciously like dinner (and your suspicions are confirmed by a glance at the nearby kitchens) before you all halt by a stack of barrels. The blonde boy from earlier introduces himself as Jarrol and the Head Boy of Hufflepuff.

"Now, I will be showing you how to enter our common room," he begins, before hastily adding "and don't tell anyone else about this, or you will be punished." He winces a bit. "Trust me."

He takes out his wand and reaches for a barrel in the middle of the stack. "Hel-ga Huff-le-puff," he intones, tapping it with every syllable. The crowd titters as the barrel swings open and you are guided up a dark staircase.

A great circular room appears, the night sky sparkling behind round windows in the ceiling. "Welcome to the common room," says Jarrol, "you'll find the boys dormitories to the left, and the girls dormitories to the right." The rest of the Hufflepuffs scatter around the room while Jarrol turns his attention to you all.

You ask Jarrol what your daily schedule is, and how you can find it.

"All first years will have the same schedule," he tells you, "you can find it over there." He points over at a cork bulletin board against one wall. "We've put a copy with your books as well... right, which you'll find up on your beds already." He nods. "Your pets as well."

Pet? You blink. You think you might have a pet, though it's strange you can't exactly remember. You'll have to see for yourself when you head upstairs.

After a few more questions are fielded Jarrol's way, you are all dismissed for the night. "Be sure to get enough sleep!" Jarrol calls as he sprints towards the boys dormitory.

You look around for your new acquaintances. Lily catches your gaze for a moment before she's swamped by a crowd of students, young and old. You think you'd best catch up with her later.

Looking around for Erza you spot a dark form near the fire, and find her staring at in in silence. She's put her hood back up.

"Look who I found," she muses softly, jabbing a thumb at the other side of the couch. When you take a look you stare in confusion: Opal Brouillad is curled into a despondent looking ball, looking like the life has been sucked out of her.

"What the hell is a Hufflepuff..."

>>4163426

You ask Opal if she's doing alright. It seems a necessary question.

She says nothing. Erza gives her a slight poke on the shoulder and she begins to rise, looking at the two of you as if for the first time. "Wuh-" she begins slowly before her eyes lock on you and she begins to advance. She holds your hair up as she growls, her own frizzy head gone wild.

You tell the others that you were just arguing, nothing big. They seemingly believe you and head off back to their own business. You and Erza sit back down and you ask Opal if she can tell you what's on her mind.

The large girl exhales heavily. "I am not a Hufflepuff... it is ze joke house." She doesn't look at you when she speaks, and though she sounds bitter she doesn't sound particularly spiteful. "I should never have tried being nice."

She stares at the fire again in silence. Erza glances at you and says nothing.

You try and talk with Opal some more. You mention that, for what it's worth, you appreciate her being nice, and apologize if you upset her in some sort of way. You're about to say that you're a confused muggleborn before you pause for a moment: are you? Your guardian is certainly a muggle but you don't remember a thing about your real parents. The thought leaves you speechless for a moment.

Opal is still looking into the fire. When you recover you just tell her that you're confused about things yourself, and when she doesn't reply you add that you don't think that being Hufflepuff changes who she is.

She sighs and glances over at you. She doesn't respond, instead getting to her feet. "Goodnight," she mumbles to the pair of you before marching off to the girls dormitory.

You look around the common room. Aside from has already been mentioned you see a great number of potted plants, a few of which seem to be staring back at you in some way. You assume that Hufflepuff has some affinity for plant life.

As if on cue, a tendril of ivy tickles your neck. You turn and watch as it curls back up to a plant hanging from the ceiling.

You distract yourself from the plants by looking for Lily, and find her to have vanished. You wouldn't be surprised if she'd been spirited away to the girls dormitory.

Otherwise you see a few portraits around the room, a trophy rack and a few tables. None of the portraits seem to be talking or moving around.

You're sure that his name is Mr. Toad. You hold out his hand and the bulbous creature jumps into them, staring up at you. He seems to be content just to sit there.

You take a seat on the bed and look around. The other boys are starting to go to bed, yet some are still not tired enough to keep from whispering.

Lucky for you you are a deep sleeper.

You arrange an obstacle course for Mr. Toad using your textbooks, and he happily sets off to jump along them.

While your toad enjoys enrichment you listen closely to a pair of boys whispering nearby. You see the back of a buzzed head as he talks to his friend.

"Since when could first years take Defense Against the Dark Arts?" he asked.

"Since the Headmistress said we could." The other boy sounded a bit drowsy. "About time they... started treating us less like kids..."

"You know who's teaching this year?" asked the first boy.

"Naw.... jus' that she's mean..."

Intrigued, you listen for anything else, but the boys just say goodnight after that. You're probably the only one awake in the dorm.

Putting your books aside, you scoop up Mr. Toad and deposit him next to your bed after a goodnight kiss. He nestles into the nearby window and closes his eyes, and after a few moments you do the same.

You drift into darkness. Quite literally in fact: you feel your body hovering in a deep, dark abyss.

This is how you usually sleep. Your guardian said it sounds like dreaming to him, but you're not quite sure.

You see the scenes of the past day pass by in monochrome, snippets of conversations between you and the people you've met. Erza smiles at you from under her hood, while Opal glares in a rage.

"HUFFLEPUFF!" roars the sorting hat.

You know that you can wake at any moment. You'll find yourself right awake at just the right time, same as usual. This is just how things are for you and you can't remember questioning it. At the same time there's quite a bit you don't seem to remember.

You float in the dark.

You wake up.

Sunlight streams into the boy's dormitory. You see a number of boys heading out into the common room and jump out of bed to throw on your robes. You notice they've grown a gold trim overnight, as well as a patch signifying your new house.

You quickly fasten your necktie and head outside to join the others, slipping Mr. Toad into your pocket.

-

The common room looks empty save for a bunch of first of excited first years crowding around the exit door. You notice they're carrying books and you realize you forgot to grab yours, but then you stop for a moment.

You don't ACTUALLY have to go to class. You may have been a good student in the past, but you also had your absentee days. You're sure there is a lot of Hogwarts to explore.

Your backtrack to grab your books, deciding to head to your first class. You find the schedule copy Jarrol mentioned, and it notes that Herbology is your first course. Tucking the corresponding textbook under your arm you leave to join the others.

You notice that everyone's gathered around the door, but there's no prefect around to guide you. Maybe everyone was waiting for you? You hurry your steps a bit and find a hoodless Erza talking with Lily. The latter gives you a little wave as you approach.

"Good morning!" she says cheerily. Erza repeats the gesture with less enthusiasm, stifling a yawn. "Sorry we didn't get to talk much last night, it all got a little crazy," Lily apologizes.

When you tell her it's no big deal she looks relieved. When you ask what you're all waiting for its your turn to be relieved: Jarrol said he would be back momentarily. "He said he was bringing a friend. It would be nice to meet some more prefects," Lily begins, when you all hear a noise from the other end of the door.

Nobody says a word. Then, suddenly, a massive translucent figure pops out to greet you. "GOOOOOD MORNING!" it roars merrily.

Lily jumps into the air while Erza stands shocked. You on the other hand..

You find the sudden appearance of the specter more fascinating than anything. "Neat", you utter, causing Erza to smirk once she's recovered.

The rotund ghost holds his belly as he laughs. "Ohoho, sorry about that!" he says to the group, "Didn't mean to frighten you."

"Really, Friar, you almost sent a few to the infirmary," chides Jarrol, who appears from the door. The prefect chuckles as the group comes back to its senses and gestures at the ghost. "Everyone, this is the Fat Friar, our house ghost. He'll be leading you to your classes today." Jarrol gives him a thumbs up. "Thanks for that, by the way."

"Of course! Enjoy your extra classes," says the Friar with sincerity, seemingly missing the grimace on Jarrol's face when he disappears back down the corridor. The robed Friar hovers a bit while he turns back to you all. "Is everyone ready for class?"

The first years nod in unison. The Friar nods and whoops merrily, soaring down the tunnel. Lily comes back to reality and looks embarrassed as you all head to the castle. "He's pretty loud," Erza remarks to the two of you, "but that's not a bad thing."

-

The three of you find yourself outside on the Hogwarts grounds, heading towards a quartet of greenhouses. You hear a whooping noise from above and see two older boys on brooms zip through the air above you, passing what looks to be a dodgeball between them.

The group stops outside the greenhouses while the Friar hovers inside. He returns with a simple shrug. "I don't see Professor Longbottom," he said, almost as if apologizing for that too, "If there's anything I can help you with, ask away!"

The first years begin to chatter, leaving you and your friends some time to talk. You could also speak with the Friar, or just kill time until the professor arrives.

You and Erza share a nod of understanding. You turn to Lily and explain that Opal is upset that she got sorted into Hufflepuff, and you mention that she thinks you may be partially responsible. You leave out her more biting commentary on Hufflepuff itself.

Lily looks shocked. "Oh no!" she says, clearly sympathizing, "She looked like it was really hurting her too." She thinks for a moment before her eyes light up. "Well, my brother Albus went through the same thing when he was sorted into Slytherin. Maybe he could give her some advice?"

"I'm not sure she wants advice," Erza admits. You're unsure yourself, but Lily's brother's does sound like he went through something similar. You tell Lily you'll keep that in mind.

"Let me know how I can help," Lily tells you, puffing out her chest.

-

After a few more minutes go by with idle chatter, you hear someone running close by. "Sorry, sorry!" calls Professor Longbottom, his hair a mess as he appears carrying several potted plants. His face seems to have sprouted several pink growths, but you soon realize that he's covered in flowers. "Thank you Friar," he tells the ghost as he lurches inside the greenhouse, telling you all to follow him inside.

-

You sit with Erza and Lily as Longbottom begins his lesson. You open the textbook to the chapter on "Puffapods" and look down at the daunting block of text.

You've always been a decent student, middle of the road, but you know there's only so much knowledge you can take. You think you can seriously pay attention in two classes a day, maybe a third elective if you choose; otherwise you'll become the master of none.

You decide to give Herbology class your full attention.

"Puffapods," Longbottom is explaining, "are delicate plants." He holds up the round, slightly glowing plant in his flowerpot. "Think of it like an egg: that's how I remember it."

Longbottom places the pot on the table in front of him. "Watch what happens when I give it a poke," he tells the class. He rolls up his sleeves a bit and notices some students closer to the front shrinking away. "Don't worry, it's not poisonous! If you get too close you might feel; little dizzy, but just watch."

With a smile he taps his wand on the plant, particularly the little seeds on its surface. You watch as they explode into flowers, sending a cascade of spores into the air. "Any touch will make them bloom," he informs you, before sending you off to your own Puffapod plants to experiment.

Aside from Lily getting an accidental flower crown the class proceeds without a problem.

>Learned: Puffapod: Drowsiness spores.

The class is dismissed, the Friar greeting you at the door to escort you to Charms class. You enter the castle again, trying to keep your footing on the moving staircase as you move into the upper levels.

The classroom is dark and damp as you approach. You thought a class with the name "Charms" May have been a bit more whimsical, but the serious looking woman at the front is anything but.

"My name is Professor Murk," she tells the class. She seems to be staring down at you all as she waves her wand, the name appearing on the chalkboard. "Charms may sound like a daintier sort of magic," she begins, letting a pause hang in the air, before she snaps her head towards you dramatically. "A fool's mindset!"

The curtains all close at once, and the lanterns in the room flicker to life. The older woman seems satisfied at the display and turns her back on you all. "Turn to the Levitation Charm," she commands.

You squint as you begin reading the text. This one may take multiple classes to master.

You begin to practice the Levitation Charm, using the feathers that Professor Murk has provided. You intone "Wingardium Leviosa" while copying the proper wand movements you've been shown.

"With mastery of this charm, which I expect from no first year, you will be able to make objects hover off the ground," says Murk. She stops her pacing and notes your performance. "Less twisting of the wrist, Mr. Finnegan-Smith."

You stop for the day when you can get the feather to hop off the table. Feeling a bit exhausted you doubt you can pay much attention to any more of your core classes.

You cup Mr. Toad in your hands and place him on your desk, heeding some faint advice on where to pet him. His eyes squeeze shut as you stroke his back and he looks very happy.

You shield Mr. Toad from imminent danger, hiding him below your hands as well. Professor Murk appears in front of you, a thin brow raised above her piercing gaze. "Did you bring a TOAD into my class?" she asks you.

Everyone holds their breath. After a few moments she nods and returns to her full height. "If you have any questions on toad care, you may ask me after class," she tells you promptly, before walking back to her desk. You seem to have earned her approval.

Feeling relief set in you scoop Mr. Toad back into your hands, some of your classmates walking over to investigate. "I didn't know you had a toad!" chimes a boy with an afro.

"That was close," Erza tells you, though she seems captivated by Mr. Toad's taring up at them. Lily gives you a forced smile and averts her eyes.

"He's v-very round..." she manages.

"This way children!" calls the Friar as he begins to swoop down a nearby staircase. You and the others are about to follow when an irate old knight begins talking from his portrait.

"Oi, Friar, the dungeons are closed!"

The Friar looks embarrassed as he hovers back over to you. "Oh, yes, well. This way then," he says as he takes you all down an adjacent hallway instead. You remember the Headmistress saying something about the dungeons last night.

Potions class ends up fitting your idea of magical whimsy a good deal. The classroom is bright and shining, with pristine cauldrons waiting for you and the others at your desks. The witch that greets you is equally as vibrant.

"Good morning first years," calls the blonde woman, streaks of grey flickering through her ornate braids. "Welcome to Potions class. My name is Professor Haywood." She gives you a dazzling smile. "Let's all get along, shall we?"

You're all assigned to brew a Cure for Boils. The Professor is helping another set of first years, and you aren't having much success at getting the right amount of ingredients. Erza looks focused as she chops up some kind of root, while Lily catches your eye and looks as confused as you are.

Darius stares blankly at you. "Well, yeah, but she's also Head of Hufflepuff. Any questions like that you have to run by her first."

Darius gets to his feet. "Think I'll go do that right now. I'll be quick!" He waves to you as he speeds off. "See ya!"

You're left alone with Mr. Toad. "I think Lunch ends in a few minutes," warns Erza, watching Darius disappear outside of the hall in confusion. The Fat Friar gives chase.

-

Once the first years are united, including a disappointed Darius, you move onwards to Transfiguration. The classroom is located high up in the castle and you find it to be a strange shape, wrapping around you as you enter.

Stranger still, the Headmistress is there. She sits leaning in the professor's chair and eats from a bag of chips.

"As the Professor has decided not to arrive," she tells you all, "Transfiguration will be used as break period."

This causes some other students to whisper around, some clearly happy about the news. The Headmistress pops a chip into her mouth as Erza leans onto her hands. "Okay...?"

You stand up, Erza staring at you in confusion as you point a dramatic finger in McGonagall's direction. Headmistress, you tell her, YOU are our teacher!

The class grows quiet. McGonagall slowly gets out of her chair, her face grave as she walks over to your desk to look down at you. "Is that so?" she asks you coldly... before she winks.

"Well, you're half right."

She clutches her robe and throws it into the air, the moon patterns sparkling as it fades into a glowing display. The smiling headmistress, now wearing a fashionable suit, taps on her large-brimmed hat, and you watch as it morphs into a large owl. It stares around at the students and begins to fly through the illusionary stars.

McGonnagal claps her hands and laughs, marching back to her desk. "Nice, nice! Five points to Hufflepuff, for bravery or some such." Her voice changes as she speaks and a blonde haired man with a beard grins impishly at you all. "And there I was hoping for break time."

While Professor Tonks introduces himself you receive several thumps on the back from your housemates.

You decide to pay some attention in Transfiguration.

"Transfiguration is one of the more difficult schools of magic. Lets start with something 'simple' for your first day," says Professor Tonks, making air quotes as he speaks. "Turn your textbooks to page fifty-five, then try turning that match on your desk into a needle."

You stare down at the textbook and are mystified by the amount of strange symbols you see. This looks to be the wizarding equivalent of mathematics, something about a "Transfiguration Alphabet" you must follow when performing spells.

From the looks on Lily and Erza's faces (as well as what you can see of the back of Darius's head from a distance) it looks like everyone is on equally poor footing here. Tonks walks around and hums a tune as he watches.

You decide to ask Professor Tonks for assistance. When you raise your hand he trots over, and you raise your voice a bit to make sure your friends hear that you'd like some advice on learning the transfiguration alphabet.

Tonks twists the point of his beard in thought. "Well, you could slam your head against the book until you understand," he says lightly, "orrrrr you could devise an easier way to remember it." He takes his wand and taps on the picture of the alphabet, connecting several runes together. "Try out this little rhyme..."

You write down the advice he gives you, and when he walks away you note that your friends have scribbled it down too.

You think you have a basic feeling for that spell. You're confident you'll see progress next time.

-

You and the other first years proceed onward through the corridors, heading to the last core class of the day. You remember it's something called DADA, whatever that means.

The Fat Friar suddenly halts at the end of a staircase. He mops his brow as if he could still be sweaty. "Sorry little ones," he tells you apologetically, "but I'm not allowed to follow you." He looks a bit sad for a moment. "The professor does not like me very much."

This causes the group to chatter anxiously. The Friar tries to play it off with a wave of his hands. "B-but I'm sure class will be fun! Come now, off you go," he says, waving you into the corridor, "the large door at the end of the hall!"

"Do you know who's teaching?" Erza asks Lily, who shakes her head. The three of you follow the others and head inside the classroom, and you immediately shiver. The room is shadowy, but not like the exaggerated theater of Professor Murk. Everything looks a shade darker than it should be. When you breathe, you can see it cloud in front of you.

The class looks around for the professor but finds nothing. You all huddle together.

You decide to go look for the teacher. You mention this to your friends, and Erza and Lily exchange glances. "If you're sure," Lily tells you hesitantly; she looks somewhat unnerved, but the three of them follow you further into the class. The other students whisper among themselves and fan out around the room.

There's not much to investigate. Looking behind the blackboard turns up nothing, but the three of you hear a rattling noise from above. A stairwell rises to a nearby office.

You see the doorknob shaking a bit, as if someone's trying to open it from the other side.

You decide to open the door.

As you move forward, the girls flank your sides. You hear Lily gulp as you approach the rattling door, and see Erza's face frozen as she tries to look calm. The three of you advance up the stairs and reach the door, feeling the eyes of the other first years upon you.

You reach out and touch the doorknob, finding it cold to the touch. It stops moving. As if on instinct you back away.

The creaks open and reveals a dark specter, smoke trailing from its figure as it launches itself into the classroom. Followed by one, and another, and yet another. The first years begin to scream.

"D-D-DEMENTORS!" wails Darius.

Lily gasps in horror. Erza stands speechless. You...

The Dementors race through the classroom, wailing and howling as the children run for their lives. Some of them make it to the backdoor, only to find it locked, and begin cowering in terror against it.

You reach for your wand. One way or another, you are ready to fend these Dementors off.

Erza breaks her silence. "Wait, no-" she begins, reaching out for your arm, but your motion has attracted the closest dementor. It whirls to face you and screeches, a mouth full of jagged teeth the only thing visible within its hood.

Your mouth opens to recite a spell. There's only one you know. "Wingardium-"

Several things happen at once.

You are no longer staring at a dementor. A white, almost angelic figure floats before you, smiling serenely as she looks down lovingly. You are looking at your mother.

At the same time, a slender figure in dark robes descends from the office. It ignores the three of you and the apparition and moves into the chaos, where it raises its wand. The dementors freeze, as does your mother.

The wand moves. The four spirits smash together into an orb and are sent flying into the office. You hear some kind of container smash closed as well as the office door.

You watch as the figure turns to you, and a dead-eyed woman stares at the three of you. "You would've killed them all," she tells you coldly.

Many, many responses fill your head, and you open your mouth to speak. And then you close it. You say nothing, looking back at the gaunt woman without a word.

She stares back undaunted. After a few moments she turns to the rest of the class. 'Do not mistake idiocy for bravery," she tells you all, her voice solemn, "or you will pay the price." Her fingers flex, motioning for you and the girls to return to the desks. "Take your seats," she commands the class.

Slowly, you all head back to your desks. The experience has clearly taken a toll on most of you, many first years shivering and looking pale as they gather their things. You are about to take a seat when you hear the Professor speak.

"You three."

You and the girls turn. Lily sniffles as the dark haired woman points at each of you in turn.

"Five points from Hufflepuff... each." Her face lacks emotion. "So you will remember that."

The first years whisper, with a few sounds of anguish from the Hufflepuffs. You, Lily and Erza look pale as you sit down... but at the moment everyone just seems happy to be alive.

After that ordeal, you decide you better pay attention in DADA anyway.

"In Defense Against the Dark Arts," begins the Professor, pacing in front of the classroom, "you will not only learn how to defend yourselves from spells, but creatures that would do you harm."

She gestures to her office. "What you saw were not dementors, but boggarts. Creatures that take on the form of nightmares." She pauses, waiting for the class to stop whispering and return to silence. Then she continues.

"Begin your research."

The class remains silent as they flip through their texbooks. You find the chapter on the Boggart fairly easily and are about to read it, when you feel someone's gaze on you. Lily is looking over at you with a weak little smile: she isn't angry with you.

You could try speaking with your friends, but it may be difficult.

You continue to read about boggarts in silence.

Boggarts take on the form of its victim's greatest fear. The type of fear determines the level of danger to the victim, and though it never as dangerous as the original form it should not be taken lightly.

Can be banished with the Riddikulus spell.

You look up at the blackboard and find nothing on it, not even the page numbers. The Professor watches you until you put your head down. It looks like you will just be reading today.

-

"We will practice the Ridikulus spell at a later date. Dismissed."

You and the first years file out of the classroom in uncomfortable silence. You, Erza and Lily reconvene once you've made it to the stairways, where the chattering students begin to disperse. The Fat Friar is nowhere to be found: you assume you have some time to kill before dinner, as you haven't planned on any extra classes.

"She's terrifying," murmurs Erza, hugging herself a bit as she pulls up her hood. Lily nods and turns to you.

"I... would've done the same thing, I think," she tells you.

You apologize to your friends, giving Erza's shoulder a comforting pat. She shakes her hood.

You decide to head back to the common room as the three of you talk. You hear a few portraits talking about Lily, and one or two comments on Erza's hood, but otherwise the halls aren't too packed.

While you walk you ask what the point of the whole thing was. Was she being lazy like Tonks was?

"I think it was just what she said," Erza says, "she wanted to teach us a lesson about how not to be brave." She sighs. "It was a little much."

Lily frowns. She's clearly not over the whole thing. "And it's a bad lesson too! People SHOULD be brave!"

As you walk towards kitchens you ask them who she even is, but neither one of them has a clue. You think about it in silence before you remember the image of your mother floating before you, and you are about to bring her up when someone calls your name.

"Oi, John Robert!"

The three of you turn as Darius appears, sprinting down the corridor. He wipes sweat from his brow.

"Professor Haywood wants to see you," he says between breaths, "didn't say what for. I can take you there." He looks at the group awkwardly as he waits for your response.

You say that you'll just see the two of them later. Erza nods and moves to tap on the barrels, Lily waving at you and following her. You and Darius go back the way you came before branching off down a new corridor.

"Hey... about the boggarts?" Darius begins, trying to make idle small talk. He isn't able to think how to proceed, so he just ends the thought with a "Yeah..."

The two of you reach Haywood's office. Darius knocks on the door and you hear the professor greet you.

The office inside is basked in a warm, honeyed light, with ample cushions and seating. Professor Haywood looks up from her teapot with a smile as the two of you approach. "Thank you Mr. Wagswort," she says, addressing Darrius, "And I will keep your request in mind." She smiles. "Would you mind if I spoke to Mr. Finnegan-Smith alone?"

"N-not at all miss," he stammers, seemingly happy at his request being acknowledged, though perhaps frightened for you as well. He leaves and shuts the door behind him, leaving you and the professor alone. She reaches for her teapot.

You take a sip of the tea. It is tasty, earthy, and you detect a bit of... well, honey. You sense a theme.

When you and Haywood have settled in she looks at you closely. "I saw you working together with Miss Potter today. You both did well for beginners." Her smile drops. "But that's not why I called you here."

She sits back in her chair. "A girl named Opal Brouillard was supposed to attend classes with you today. I didn't see her, and none of the other professors did either." She places her cup and saucer on the desk.

She looks into her teacup for a moment. "It's not uncommon for a first year to disagree with their sorting, or to act against it. Some try to run away." Haywood looks up at you with some concern. "But nobody has seen Opal since last night. She could be hiding somewhere in the castle." Her expression tightens a little as she admits this.

You find only one question on your mind. You ask Haywood who your DADA professor is, and when you notice she looks confused you explain that she never gave the class her name.

Haywood's expression darkens. "Professor Chang," she tells you, her tone frosty. "She prefers to keep her distance from students." She ignores her tea, thinking upon something for a moment before looking at you. "I heard about your class with her today. I do not approve of her methods, but I cannot revert the house points."

Haywood frowns. "I'm sorry." She returns to her teacup, looking frustrated as she sips. You feel as though she will answer most questions you can think of, but at the same time you feel obligated to go look for Opal.

"Thank you again for meeting with me," she says, and quickly includes "if you can, try not to tell too many people about Opal. Just those you can trust." She gives you a confident smile. "We'll find her."

You nod and say goodbye, heading outside into the corridor. You find yourself alone, listening to the echos of students wandering throughout the castle. The sun is beginning to set outside, and at the moment you have nothing scheduled aside from the eventuality of dinner.

Even then, you could probably miss dinner if it meant finding a friend of yours.

Hogwarts is yours to explore.

After a good amount of thought you decide to ask some of the talking portraits about where Opal has gone. You think there might be a few in your dormitory, and you know there's at least a few portraits of SOME sort in there.

Retracing your steps you knock on the barrel and walk into your common room. The evening light shines through the room, but the fireplace still flickers all the same. You see a few students milling about but not too many, and spot nobody you know.

In terms of portraits you spot two of significance. One is an older woman giving a toast over the fireplace, while the other is a boy next to the trophy rack.

He said to say hello to the house elves, whatever they may be, so you go ahead and tickle the pear. It wriggles a bit and sure enough turns into a handle, making the large painting into a door, and when you reach up high you're able to let yourself in.

You find yourself in a large kitchen, patrolled by a number of small folk with pointed ears hoisting plates of food onto the tables. One in particular with a fancy chef hat is watching the procedure, crossing off a checklist before he hears the door close behind you. "Who are you supposed to be?" he asks in a high pitched voice: though it's not nearly as high as you would imagine.

When you arrive, you realize that you don't exactly KNOW where the dungeons are. You figure that you don't exactly have much time so you just keep going down, further and further until you reach the ground level, where you you open the first door you find and head inside.

"Well who is THIS?"

You descend deeper into the bowels of Hogwarts, the lights growing dimmer with ever flight of stairs. The ghost seems cheery as ever as it guides you forward, encouraging you onwards as it tells you that Opal is just around the next corner.

When you turn around the bend, you find yourself in a dingy corridor with very little light. All the same you see a shadowy figure up ahead, and before you can call to it the ghost beats you to the punch.

"HEEEEEEEEELP! THERE'S A TRESPASSER IN THE DUNGEONS! HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP!"

The charms professor frowns at you. "The dungeons are forbidden for all but Slytherin-" she begins, but trails off as she hears a clanking noise coming from behind you. She raises her wand and you turn to see what's going on.

A bobbing lantern appears from the way you came, carried by one of the oldest men you've ever seen. His wrinkled face is scrunched in fury as he hobbles quickly over on cane, sending his few remaining strands of hair into a frenzy.

"Naughty students? Trespassers?" he asks excitedly, "they never learn, no no no." He reaches the two of you and ogles you with wild eyes. "A Hufflepuff in the dungeons? What are we going to do with this one, professor?" he asks Murk.

You tell the two the truth, that you were looking for a friend that's gone missing and that a ghost told us to follow him here. Murk narrows her eyes and asks what the ghost looked like, and when you give her a description she rolls her eyes wearily.

"Troublesome children," mutters the caretaker, "always losing their way-

"Mr. Filch, I very much doubt that PEEVES was telling the truth," says Murk in irritation. She looks back at you and seems sympathetic. "Please take Mr. Finnegan-Smith to the great hall while I search for his friend." You mention her name is Opal and she nods.

Mr. Filch looks as though he hates the idea. After some huffing and puffing her jerks his lantern. "Fine! This way-" he starts, before you all hear a distant sound.

You hear a very faint noise. It comes from the far off door.

"Who's there?" barks Filch. He begins to grin as he hobbles towards the door.

"Mr. FILCH!" warns Murk. She looks exasperated and looks back over at you. "Follow me," she commands, and you accompany the two adults as they move towards the door. Again you hear a faint noise, louder this time, and it sounds as though someone is talking. Murk shoos Filch away from the door and swishes her wand, causing it to slowly creak open and reveal nothing but darkness.

"Don't see much of nothing here..." complains Filch, raising his lantern.

The flames light up a section of the corridor. The walls are old, the oldest you've seen so far, and they seem to be falling apart in places. Something stirs at the end of the hall.

A large figure stares back, horns of bone jutting from a dark hood. Its mouth opens like a crocodile to reveal a jagged mouth of teeth and it begins to scream.

In your hurry you almost collide into a figure at the very end, You find Filch off to one side, quivering with fear, and you realize that someone else has entered the fray.

Professor Chang gives you an absent glance before continuing forward. You and Filch watch as she calmly walks towards the door.

Professor Murk has her wand pointed out towards the screaming beast, who is only a few feet from the entering the hall. "SECTUM-" she begins yelling, before the door slams closed in her face. She whirls around to find Chang's wand pointed at it, turning as the door begins to fortify itself. You hear the monster continue to scream and slam against the door.

Nobody speaks. You hear the monster's efforts begin to slow before, after some time, you hear nothing at all.

Murk breaks the silence, her face a mixture of emotions but primarily anger. "The absolute NERVE!" she hisses, whirling around to face the DADA teacher.

Chang remains unemotional. "Which you seem to lack," she replies in monotone, causing Murk to turn scarlet. "We each have our own roles: do not attempt mine."

"Like the three headed dog!" chimes Lily. You and Erza look at her blankly and she smiles sheepishly. "Oh, my dad said there was one."

"Of course there was," sighs Erza. She holds her chin as she thinks for a second before she realizes something. "Is Opal in there?" she asks with alarm. "Did you find out anything about her?"

Or if we do want to mess with it we certainly should start paying more attention in DADA xD

>Suggest an idea
Maybe we can go full detective with the portraits? Questioning them before was really smart, maybe if we look for portraits near the dungeons or right outside our common room they could point us in whatever direction she went. Also since we are a pleb and dont know magical lore, ask the girls if they know what "daring and nerve" have to do with anything. I'm pretty sure she wants in Gryffindor. Maybe she didnt go in the dungeons after all and there's something one of them might know about Gryffindor house that could help us put the pieces together.

Yeah supporting this, especially questioning the dungeon portraits.

For now highlight daring and nerve, and the fact that Haywood mentioned she disagreed with her sorting.

Honestly my first thought was she DID try to sneak into the very off limits dungeons as a very misguided attempt to prove she was a gryff - maybe Peeves wasn't 100% lying?

You tell them that you spoke with the portraits in the common room. Opal snuck out when everyone was asleep, and that she'd been talking about "daring and nerve" a lot. You ask the girls if they know what that's about.

Erza shakes her head. "Lily?" she asks over, watching as the redhead scrunches her nose.

"Daring and nerve, daring and nerve... that sounds so familiar!" She looks frustrated. "Old fashioned too."

"Yeah." Erza nods. "We should ask another portrait."

>>4166795

You also mention that her sorting was private, so she had been angry for longer than you had imagined. The girls look at one another.

"I didn't know you could be privately sorted!" says Lily. Erza gives you both a shrug. You all agree she's unhappy with Hufflepuff, however.

The Lady's portrait didn't know much about it, and he was a past student here so maybe he'd know about it, if it was really as old fashioned as Lily was saying. If he knows nothing we need to ask older portraits.
>>
>>4166803
<say something else
"Do either of you know who Cedric is? He's that portrait over there and he's the one who saw her sneak out. He told me to check the kitchens, but I'm not sure why. Should we go speak to him together?"

Maybe Lilly knows the name and I'm sure he could tell us that daring and nerve = gryffindor.

You ask the two girls if they know who Cedric is, motioning to his portrait. Lily's face lights up. "Oh, Cedric Diggory! The Hogwarts Triwizard Champion!" Her expression dims as she begins to look sad. "He was killed by Lord Voldemort."

Erza looks at you for a moment as if she has something to say. When she looks to Lily you mention if the two would like to join you in speaking with him and she brightens up a little. "Sure!" Lily says as she gets to her feet.

The three of you walk over to Cedric's protrait, only to find it empty. "Oh," says Lily, a little disappointed. You think you'll have to try again later.

"I think they do that sometimes," Erza murmurs.

"No, sorry," says Lily. "I didn't think to bring some!"

"Me neither." Erza shakes her head. "Maybe someone here has food?" She motions over to some of the remaining Hufflepuffs when you hear the noise of a startling whipcrack.

Trying not to drop Mr. Toad you and the girls stare at a present that has just appeared on a nearby table. It's rather sizable, and a few other Hufflepuffs crowd around as you take a look at an attached tag.

September 3

You wake up.

You have compartmentalized the knowledge you have gleaned so far, as well as the connections you've made. You will do your best to keep yourself up to date.

Skill Sheet: https://pastebin.com/hNiePSUk
Character Compendium: https://pastebin.com/cs3ZAGwS

You realize that with a friend of yours missing and a giant monster running around, you really shouldn't be slacking off in any of your classes. Your concentration limit has been removed: now you may learn something from every class if you choose, at the expense of missing potential social connections or events from being so diligent in the meantime. You will eventually run out of things to learn in class and will be able to use the time to just practice or be social.

The choices are yours.

You have breakfast in the Great Hall this morning before your classes. What will you do?

>At the same time, a slender figure in dark robes descends from the office. It ignores the three of you and the apparition and moves into the chaos, where it raises its wand. The dementors freeze, as does your mother.

Did Chang emerge from the office that we released the boggarts from and run straight past us? That would mean that she would be in range of the one in front of us which changed into our mother right when she appeared meaning the boggart reacted to her.
Could she be afraid of our mother? Is there history between them?

Breakfast is laid out for you and the other students, sumptuous pastries and porridge among the offerings.

You don't see anyone you know, until you identify a small wraith-like figure sitting at one of the tables. You go over and say hello to Erza.

She puts down her hood and gives you a small smile. "Hey," she greets. She still has bags under her eyes, but she looks a little more well rested than when you first met.

The two of you set out through the corridor and head for the greenhouses.

The classroom is in chaos. Puffapod sprouts have appeared most everywhere, with a good number of them clinging to Professor Longbottom's robes. He puts his hands on his hips and attempts to look natural, despite the giggles among the students.

"Well, because you all did so well with the Puffapods yesterday, I thought we'd learn how to grow them." He swats a stray pod on his face and groans when it begins to bloom. "Lets all pick a flowerpot..."

You could use the time to learn how to grow your own Puffapod plant. There's quite a few potted plants in the common room already, so you're sure your own plant wouldn't be out of the question. At the same time you could use the class time to speak with a friend of yours, or the professor himself.

You decide to pay attention and learn more about Puffapods.

With careful listening to Longbottom's instructions and close reading of the textbook, you pinpoint the exact soil conditions and wand techniques to help properly seed a Puffapod. You think that if you acquired a Puffapod seed, you'd be able to grow this at the common room.

"Well done," Professor Longbottom says, giving you a look of approval.

"I wish you could just, I dunno, just put food on the plants," complains Darius, walking alongside you as the group travels to Charms class. "Don't muggles have something like that?"

You think it sounds familiar. Before you can respond however you walk into the dark Charms classroom, where an irate looking Professor Murk stands watch.

"Sit down, books out, PRACTICE!" she commands, clapping her hands. She clearly isn't happy. You and Darius clam up as you get to your seats.

It looks like you'll be practicing the levitation charm some more today. After how well you had it last time you think today will be the day you "master" it.

You decide to learn the Levitation Charm.

After a good chunk of studying, feather hopping and wand conducting one after the other, you feel ready to present to the professor. Murk looks at you closely as you begin waving your wan and. you carefully pronounce the incantation.

"Wingardium LeviOsa!"

You feel your wand thrum with a subtle energy, watching as the feather begins to float into the air. The nearby students stare as the feather rises high above your head, before it begins to sway back down onto the table.

Murk's eyes don't leave the traveling feather for a few moments before she makes a "huh" noise. "Good work, Finnegan-Smith," she tells you without a smile, and you can tell she means it.

You walk up to Professor Murk as she's clearing her chalkboard and ask her about the creature you saw last night. What exactly was it?

She eyes you closely and quickly looks agitated, exhaling through her nose. "I don't know what you're talking about," she quickly says, "but if I DID, I wouldn't bother asking in any of your classes."

Murk stalks away muttering under her breath. "What's she angry about?" Darius asks, and you start wondering if it's safe to explain.

-

You find yourself in potions class, again working on the Cure for Boils.

"I saw some good mixtures yesterday," says Professor Haywood, "let's keep it up and make those cures!"

You think it'll take a few classes for you to properly learn the Cure, though Erza seems to have no issue with it judging by the rapid chopping noises you hear to your side.

Waiting for a pause in her work you ask if Erza can help you learn. She pauses in the middle of dicing a root.

"Sure. Watch this," she tells you, slowly chopping the root with one side of the blade, before she slips and smacks the counter. "Wait. No."

She does this several more times while getting continually more embarrassed. Eventually you both glean some knowledge, as well as what to do (and not to do).

You find yourself in an elaborate library, which contains more students than you expected for a lunch break. The place is relatively quiet and you feel as if you should keep your voices down.

A white haired, pompous looking ghost is sorting books at the middle, and you assume him to be some kind of librarian. He raises a puffy eyebrow as you and Erza come near. "May I help you?"

You ask the ghost if he knows any books on "daring and nerve" you could check out.

He scoffs a little, chortling. "Why check out any book on Gryffindor, my boy," he tells you, before begins to sing:

You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve, and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart

He is shushed by every student and faculty member in the vicinity. As he calms down he sees you and Erza staring at him. "What, did you think I was a Ravenclaw?"

The specter turns his nose up. "Well. I would assume most of them have skulls on their heads. If you mean tribal garments I would look for 'Beasts of the Western Worlds'." He points you off to a nearby aisle and continues to hum the Gryffindor song.

You and Erza haul the sizable textbook down and lay it on the table. You are given three places to look, and likely only have the time left to check one chapter.

You and Erza decide to tackle the North American section, needing both your arms to even turn the pages of the gigantic book in the first place. You take the left pages while she takes the right.

After a few minutes without success, Erza nudges your shoulder. "Does this look familiar?" she asks you.

You glance over and freeze. You feel your blood run cold as the spitting image of the monster stares back at you.

Originating from the forests of North America, the Wendigo is a cruel and vicious beast of legend. Often wearing the bones of its victims, the Wendigo is known for its taste for human flesh: earning it an association with cannibalism, murder, greed, and many other vices.

While legends have told that a possessed wizard, witch or muggle can be turned into a Wendigo, these claims have been wildly debated.

You hear Erza's breath hitch as she sees your expression. "Oh god."

You feel a mixture of emotions swirl in your chest, but one thing is certain on your mind. You look at Erza and tell her you really don't know why this would be in the castle: guard or no guard.

She looks at the page gravely. "This sounds worse than a three-headed dog," she admits, nodding with a frown.

The two of you sit there for a moment in stunned silence, thinking upon the gravity of the situation. At the very least the monster has a name: and you think you earned a clue to Opal's whereabouts.

You just hope the two aren't connected.

After lunch you find yourself in Transfiguration class, munching on a "pumpkin pasty" a helpful first year passed to you. It's no meal substitute but it sure is enough for now.

"Remember, don't rush this," warns Professor Tonks, who is lounging in his chair with a cup of coffee. "Screw up the fundamentals and you're a screw up for life. Trust me; I know a few."

You notice that his hair is a silvery grey today. Trying to distract yourself momentarily from Wendigo thoughts you wonder what you'll do in class today. Mr. Toad croaks lowly as in thinking himself.

You decide to practice Matchstick to Needle.

Keeping a close eye on the transfiguration table, and using the pattern Tonks taught you, you're able to get some work in on the spell.

Mr. Toad sits on the table and watches as you flick your wand, turning the matchstick into a shiny silver matchstick. "Getting there," affirms Tonks, and you have to stop him before his wand touches your confused toad.

"Oops, right. Not a class toad."

You and the other first years hesitantly file into Defense Against the Dark Arts, unsure of how things will be after your first class. You're surprised to see no tricks or tests waiting for you: just a grim looking Professor Chang and a target dummy.

"You will begin learning the Knockback Jinx. It is a rudimentary defensive spell, but requires intensive practice." As if in response to the interested faces in the room she then adds, "Today is assigned reading."

A boy raises his hand and she ignores it. Eventually he gives in and asks her out loud. "Professor, why is there a target then?"

She gives him an idle glance before turning to the dummy. With a snap of her wand it is sent flying into the back wall.

"Demonstration."

Did we recognize the dementors when we saw them? If we don’t recognize them, but they are somehow our deepest fear, and our mother is somehow involved, they may be a key part of why our memory is missing. Make a note to ask professor Chang about why you saw them despite knowing nothing about them, as scary as she is, she is here to teach us how to defend ourselves, and if we have a good reason to fear those, that’s probably key information.

Then why was our mother a part of the vision? I think the boggarts were in that form because of us. Others can see the form they took, but that form is probably because of our fear, same as in your examples, they had one primary target who determines their form but everyone sees the form they chose for that target. Everyone being afraid of dementors wouldn’t make sense as a reason considering it’s highly unlikely everyone’s greatest fear is the moon. They target one person specifically. Also, we can almost be assured the MC wouldn’t just be afraid of them because of world events since he doesn’t know jack shit about wizards/ the magical world as was demonstrated in the beginning.

I dont see why you think it's a patronus! If I'm wrong I'm happy to admit it whenever we find out but from the way it was described, I cant imagine it being a patronus. You decide to head to the Great Hall, telling Erza and Lily you should discuss your recent findings. They agree and run off with you to dinner.

-

The hall is bustling with student life, and you've put aside your dinner for the moment so you can reconvene with your friends. Mr. Toad slowly tackles a pile of corn bits you left for him as Erza begins to speak.

"The monster is a Wendigo," she says to Lily, who stops fiddling nervously with her fork. "It wears the bones of the things it eats... which seems to be humans."

Lily's face turns pale. "That sounds-" she begins.

"Worse than a three headed dog," you all say together. It would be funny if you didn't feel a turn in your stomach, just revisiting the memory of the monster screaming at you. The three of you sit in grave silence as the hall buzzes with energy around you.

Erza eventually continues. "But we did find something about Opal." Lily perks up a bit as Erza shares a look with you. "We learned that 'daring and nerve' is part of a song about Gryffindor. That's probably where Opal got it from."

"So she really likes Gryffindor?" Lily asks you. She looks away for a moment: the idea has some impact on her.

"I don't know. I haven't heard of it."

Not knowing much about Gryffindor yourself, you ask the girls what a "Gryffindor place" would be like. Erza raises a brow and looks at Lily expectantly, and causing her to blush.

"O-oh, well, the tower maybe?" she says fidgeting a little, and when you look confused she explains herself. "It's the common room. I have a brother in Gryffindor too! A lot of my family were Gryffindors."

You tell your friends that you should split up, suggesting that Erza go with Lily to meet with her brother. If he doesn't have any information than maybe a portrait around their common room might have seen Opal. You will check in with the head of Gryffindor, who is...

"Professor Longbottom," Erza informs you. She nods in agreement. "That sounds good."

She is pulled along by a happy Lily. "You get to meet James!" she cheers, dragging the girl along as they run over to the Gryffindor table. Quickly finishing your meal you pluck Mr. Toad from the demolished corn pile and place him back in your pocket, heading over to the teacher's table at the end of the hall.

You find Professor Longbottom sharing a laugh with the giant man you met on the first day. He notice you with a twinkle in his eye. "I remember you," he begins, looking over at the Professor, "had to give this one the 'giant talk'." He chuckles heartily.

"Mr. Finnegan-Smith, meet Professor Hagrid," says Longbottom, formally introducing you to the bearded man. "He teaches Care of Magical Creatures here at Hogwarts." He smiles as he tips his goblet in your direction. "And Mr. Finnegan-Smith here has a knack for herbology."

You decide to ask Professor Longbottom about both topics on your mind. You first ask him if he knows anything about where Opal Brouillard may have gone, explaining that she's your friend and is currently missing.

Longbottom frowns and looks more serious. "We're doing everything we can to find her," he tells you, his voice dropping a bit, "and I wish I had more to tell you." He gives you a strained smile. "Believe me, she's going to be okay."

Looks like nothing new on that front, though it seems multiple teachers are doing something about it.

You then decide to ask about the Wendigo in the dungeons. You raise your voice a bit so that Hagrid can hear, thinking he may know something as an expert on Magical Creatures.

Hagrid chokes on his drink, sopping it over his beard. Professor Longbottom stares at you with wide eyes as he recovers. "Where'd ya hear about that?!" asks Hagrid, stopping himself from asking further when Longbottom lowers a hand.

"Mr. Finnegan-Smith, come with me for a moment."

Leaving the bewildered Hagrid behind, you and Professor Longbottom walk along the edge of the great hall towards the exit. A few Slytherins whisper in your direction, likely thinking you're getting in trouble. You sure hope that you aren't.

You and Professor Longbottom are left relatively alone in the foyer. He looks more stern now as he puts his hands on his hips.

"There are many mysteries in Hogwarts, and some are better left unsolved. I know that you are worried about your friend," he continues, before sighing a little bit, "and I am too." He grows serious again when he eyes you closely. "But don't go asking around about a
'Wendigo': it's nothing to concern yourself with."

You try and argue that Opal could be in danger of the Wendigo. You mention that she wanted to be in Gryffindor, so she could try and face the monster to prove herself.

"You can't change houses-" he tries to say, before he drifts off as he listens to your full explanation. "I had no idea," he tells you, indicating Opal's woes, and seems to be giving the idea consideration. He looks back at you.

"It makes sense. I'll tell the other teachers. But in the meantime, don't go putting yourself in danger: we'll make sure Miss Brouillard is safe."

He gives you a look for several seconds to make sure you understand, and after you nod he looks satisfied. "Sorry to take you from dinner," he says, a little late, before he turns and heads back into the great hall.

You're left outside. Mr. Toad warbles in your pocket, and as the two of you have finished dinner you're left with an hour or two before bed. As Lily and Erza have their own investigation you wonder what you should do next.

You think about returning to the library and checking out a book on Wendigos. The only one that comes to mind is the one you and Erza read earlier, and you remember how ridiculously large it was.

You could maybe Wingardium Leviosa it around the castle... but you don't want to drop it on your feet.

You decide that you should check out the portraits around the dungeons. You make a note not to go into the dungeons however: you don't want to get in trouble.

After a brisk walk through the corridors you find yourself in the moving stairwell, and begin the descent towards the dungeon levels. You spot a figure standing watch on the far off floor and halt when you're two floors above. Wouldn't want to get too close.

You see a few paintings of note among the masses: some women playing cards, a man polishing eyeglasses, and a completely empty portrait.

You investigate the empty portrait.

Nothing happens. You don't see any mention of a name on this portrait, not even a signature. You wonder if it's secretly a door or some kind of illusion and begin to lean forward.

An face stares back at you and begins yelling. "BWAAAAAAAAAAARGH!"

Flinching back you see Peeves explode out from the other side of the portrait, cackling as he dances through the air. A number of portraits nearby all express their disgust at his appearance.

"It's the troublemaker! Hope you get detentioooooon," he says in a singsong voice.

You ask Peeves which way he sent the "child".

He squints and cocks his head to the side. "To the dungeons of course. Do you have too much earwax in there?"

>>4169065

You ask him if the child was a girl, and around Opal's height (which you accomplish by standing on your toes). He cocks his head the other way.

"I already told you didn't I? Ugly little thing... couldn't even tell." He snickers and floats to the side of your head. "Deaf and bad at remembering. How sad!"

>>4169027

When you ask him if the child asked you why they were going to the dungeons he shrugs. "No, and I didn't care to ask. Just going into the dungeons is breaking the rules! Unless you're a slimy little Slytherin of course." He giggles for a moment. "Or me."

>>4169058

You ask Peeves if he's acquaintances with the Wendigo. His mouth makes an O shape as he makes a peculiar laugh. "Well well," he says, an ugly grin on his features as he advances on you, "you are learning more than you should." His teeth are like piano keys as he gets in your face. "Almost too much..."

The two of you hear a loud popping noise above your head. A cascade of sparks and streamers trails down around you as you and Peeves stare up at a sudden flurry of fireworks. "Who's having fun?!" demands Peeves, soaring around to find the perpetrator.

You both watch as Professor Tonks appears, walking up the staircase with a bottle rocket in one hand. "Go bother someone another stairwell," he advises, tossing the rocket to the astonished poltergeist before he soars away to cause mischief. The Professor walks over and leans against the banister, whistling softly as he listens to Peeves fly away. "I'll bet I'll regret that."

He smirks and looks your way. "Now, how did you make enemies with Peeves so fast?" he asks you, sounding like he's only half joking.

Tonks clicks his tongue and taps on the bannister. "Classic Peeves move," he tells you, shaking his head, "sending new students towards the most forbidden area of the year."

He glances down at the bottom of the stairwell, and when you follow his gaze you see that the figure has disappeared. There's a good chance it was Tonks himself. "Not like you're missing much in the dungeons, other than mold."

When you ask Tonks where you can get some fireworks of your own, he twists his beard a bit. "I won't tell you my suppliers," he says, grinning slyly, "but in my well storied experience I find that older students are the most enterprising."

He pushes himself off the banister and yawns. "Well, back to my watch," he says. "Goodnight Mr. Finnegan-Smith." Scratching himself he walks back down the nearby stairs, having beaten you to the punch on a farewell.

Having some new information on hand you can tell that it's growing late. You decide to head to the common room and meet with your friends.

-

You find Erza and Lily sitting by the fireplace as you arrive. The girls have reserved a space for you, Erza looking around for any potential eavesdroppers before looking to you.

You say that they can go first. Erza nods. "Lily and I went to go talk with James and his friends," she tells you, "it was... a lot."

"I only had to pull her hood down once!" Lily chimes. Erza flushes and waves her away.

"They suggested that we talk to their portrait door, the one for their common room. We had some time before bed so they took us to her." She looks at Lily, who continues on with the story.

The Fat Lady looked between the two girls before rolling her fingers through her hair, her brows scrunched in thought. "Why, YES!" she exclaims, watching them both flinch, "I did see a girl last night. Quite late for a student to be out, mind you."

Before the girls could continue she seemed to realize something. "Why, she was Hufflepuff too! How curious." She wags her finger. "Though she kept badgering me about becoming a Gryffindor. Nothing I could do to help her, poor thing. I told her she might as well try being a little braver; she could always be 'Gryffindor at heart'."

The fat lady saw the girls had turned pale. She stared at them before laughing. "Ha! Badgering!"

Erza and Lily look at you in unison. "If someone told Opal to be braver, it wouldn't go well," says Erza.

You aren't going to jump to conclusions just yet.

You tell the girls about your encounter with Peeves today, where you learned he recently lead an "ugly student" to the dungeons when she asked for directions. He wasn't able to tell if they were a boy or a girl, unless he was lying.

Erza rubs her temples as she listens. "Opal isn't ugly. But she is tall for a girl our age, and she's strong." She frowns. "Maybe through the eyes of a ghost he couldn't tell."

"A dumb ghost too," pouts Lily. She looks at you. "Did Opal meet him right after she talked with the fat lady?" she asks.

You don't have enough to confirm it. You think there's a very good chance, enough for you all to assume the girl was one and the same. After a moment's thought you move onto the next question: why would she go to the dungeons?

"Daring and nerve!" Lily chimes in, as if being quizzed. Erza nods.

"If she didn't know that the sorting couldn't be changed, she might have taken the fat lady literally." Erza mulls over that for a second and then suddenly stares up at the two of you. "But how did she know about the wendigo?"

The three of you glance around as you're illuminated by the fire. Nothing comes to your mind, at least not immediately.

You suggest that it's possible she didn't know about the wendigo at all.

The thought gives you some pause, and seems to worry the girls as well. Opal could've walked into something she wasn't at all prepared for. The three of you exchange glances and Lily is the first to respond.

"I mean... maybe. And even if she's tough, I don't know if she can take on a bone monster." She looks a bit guilty at admitting it, even if she's right. She clears her head and looks back at you and Erza. "But what are we going to do about it?"

Erza exhales. It looks to you like she's been thinking this over. "We don't have many options. The teachers are looking for her, and students aren't allowed into the dungeons. So either we hope the teachers can find her orrr..."

Lily's eyes sparkle. "We go save her!" she whispers, excited by the mere concept.

>No, I'm pretty sure we have some third option
The teachers are probably combing the dungeons as we speak - especially after what we told Neville. Also going in there ourselves is only going to get us eaten.

We should try to figure out why the fuck a flesh eating monster is in the dungeons in the first place...and maybe see if we can do some more research on Opal as well. Lot's of things don't really add up about her - why she suddenly decided to attend Hogwarts, her private sorting.

Honestly I think the fact that Opal has American ancestry and the fact that the Wendigo is an American myth are linked? Opal's the product of somewho who was possessed and turned into a Wendigo (and then obviously turned back somehow)? Might explain why she's an absolute unit of a freshman.

After some mental debate, you tell the girls that you're not sure you should go at it by yourselves. The teachers are more prepared to take on the wendigo than you are... but all the same, you don't know if you can put your friends fate in their hands alone.

The girls listen as you say you should do some more research on the wendigo and what can defeat it, as well as reaching out to more students that may be able to help. When you mention asking Lily's brother Albus for help in the dungeons she stares at you.

"I didn't think about that!" She nods excitedly. "He doesn't care about rules that much, so..."

She follows your gaze over her shoulder and sees Jarrol has strolled by. "Try and get to bed soon," he warns the three of you before heading off to the boys dormitory, yawning as he does so.

When he's gone Erza hunches a bit as she whispers. "We'll make time to research, and ask around for help," she says. "Let's do what we can."

Right?

September 4

You wake up.

Remembering the pact you made with Erza and Lily, you slip Mr. Toad into the pocket of your robes and head into the common room.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9NLitbYMss

Sunlight dances through the windows. The grass dances lazily.

You see a few Hufflepuff you don't recognize, as well as Lily standing with some girls you don't know by the bulletin board. You can use breakfast time to head somewhere in the castle, or just to eat breakfast.

You decide to go speak with Lily. As you approach the bulletin board she smiles brightly. "Good morning-" she begins before the older girl to her side cuts her off.

"Oh, wow," says the slender girl, clapping her her hands together. You notice her nails glow a brilliant gold. "I love your hair! It looks so good." She looks almost like she wants to touch it.

Her companion, a squat and stocky girl around her age, gives her a look. "Jessie, that's a boy."

"I know that!" Jackie complains, "You don't have to be a girl to understand good looks alright?"

>Thanks!

You thank her for the compliment. She smiles and extends her hand.

"Jessie Jacks. Like the old game?" Her smile turns a little as she hopes you understand. "And this is August!" she says as she indicates her friend.

August waves lazily. "Sorry to steal Lily from you," she tells you, "I was trying to recruit her for Godric's Gab. Jess thought it would be a great time to poach her for Quidditch too."

Jess whirls around on Lily with wide eyes. "So yeah, what do you think?!" This causes Lily, who has been waiting on the side patiently, to jump a little.

"C-can I have a few minutes?"

As both terms are unfamiliar to you, you figure you may as well ask about both.

As Jessie reached out first you decide to ask about Quidditch. She blinks.

"Oh, like, only the biggest magical sport in the world," she tells you. "Hoops, broomsticks, and bludgers coming at you from every side. What's not to like?" She looks pleased by your interest. "Once you pass your flying lessons, come to tryouts!"

You then ask August about Godric's Gab. She nods and crosses her arms with a small sigh: it looks like she gets asked this often.

"School newspaper. Kind of a new thing. We're looking for first years all the time, so let me know if you'd like a job." She notices your expression and quickly clarifies. "We pay in experience."

You thank the older girls and tell them you'll keep their activities in mind, giving Lily a supportive thumbs up as you leave her to fend for herself.

You sit at the Great Hall for breakfast, stroking a happy Mr. Toad with your free hand as you eat cereal. You don't see Erza anywhere, but do spot Darius off to one side.

You could speak with people you know, but you realize you could also use the time to study for one of your more difficult classes. You could probably then use that class time to speak with the teacher or one of your classmates instead.

You decide to put in some practice with the Knockback Jinx. Opening your DADA textbook you give the spell a thorough review, and then start to practice it lightly on your dinner plate.

It scoots over to the other side of the table, and Mr. Toad jumps to give chase. A boy on the other side just shakes his head. "Dude."

When you and the other first years arrive at Herbology, you find Professor Longbottom tidier than usual. "We'll be going over the Puffapods again today," he tells the rest of the class, before beckoning you over.

"Mr. Finnegan-Smith, I have nothing new for you today. Could you help some of the other students with their potting?" He gives you his usual smile, but he seems to be preoccupied with something.

You are given the time to meet with classmates, or to speak with the professor.

You decide to go ahead and help tutor some of the other students.

You glide through the greenhouse, aiding the other first years and giving them advice on how to tend to the puffapods. When you finishing helping one grateful boy with his trimmings, you notice Professor Longbottom watching with approval.

"Excellent work! Five points to Hufflepuff."

-

Professor Murk seems a shade paler than yesterday, but her irate temper seems to have subsided.

"We will be moving on from the Levitation Charm, and onto Lumos: the Wand-Lighting charm. One of the most useful spells for any witch or wizard."

Murk waves her wand, and the torches in the room suddenly die out. The classroom is plunged into darkness before you see a bright light erupt from her wand.

"So you had best pay attention!"

You decide to learn the Wand-Lighting Charm.

You and Erza work together, flicking your wands in tandem to get the proper movement down. Aside the time she makes a strobe light with her wand for a good minute, the lesson passes uneventfully.

Professor Murk holds her head high. "Keep up the good work, Mr. Finnegan-Smith," she tells you, "or else." You're not sure if it's praise or a threat.

"We'll be having a potions test on Friday," warns Professor Haywood, strutting about the Potions classroom as you hear some students groan, "so keep practicing those cures!"

You look as though you can fit some more practice on the Cure for Boils, and feel a slight sense of urgency come along at the thought of your first test at Hogwarts. Lily's expression mirrors your own.

You can probably... pass it? At least at your current level.

You decide to use the time to practice more with the Cure for Boils.

With the help of your friends, you take notes on how to properly use the scales and other measuring tools, as well as ways to improve your finesse with the knife and mortar. When Professor Haywood comes by your desk you ask if her you performed today.

For the first time since you've met her she can't quite look you in the eye. "It smells great," Haywood tells you all the while, her usual upbeat attitude masking her thoughts.

You find yourself outside the potions classroom, staring down the corridor as your friends move on to the Great Hall. You could meet with them there to discuss things, or you could head elsewhere in the castle during the break.

My bet is she's possessed, not dead. The world of Harry Potter is like Skyrim, kids don't die, even if you want them too.

>Somewhere New
>Library
Uh...

>Possessed.
Well here are the options:
A: She wandered into the dungeons and got ate by the Wendigo that nobody knew about.

B: Due to her American ancestry and someone being a dick, she accidentally transformed into a Wendigo. As everyone was convinced the Wendigo ate her, they hunted it down, and when it was killed the transformation wore off.

C: She wandered into the dungeons, became possessed by the Wendigo that was hanging out down there for some reason, then was killed by all the teachers who were convinced the Wendigo ate her.

Hmm...
