In the last session we talk with our friends about the option for them to become Cup Bearers. Unfortunately, they all refuse for personal reasons. Then we decided to finally ship Irma and her kin back home. We discovered the group of settlements belonging to these people along with the largest monster you’ve ever seen. It turns out that the northern Monster King is an entity comparable in size to a mountain, so taking it down promises to be quite an undertaking. Luckily it is dormant. Among other things, beastmen settlements would be inaccessible by water until we clear out the monster infestation in that region.

After dealing with airlifting Irma’s people back home, we decided to pay a visit to the dwarven ruin to see their progress. Apparently, dwarves and Ihmisetian Remnant reached some kind of an agreement for temporary ownership of the region and a lot more of underground elves have arrived into the area. After a discussion with their spiritual leader, we decided to help them with housing, infrastructure and defenses over the following month. In the end, the priestess informs you that her people might accept us as their new patron.
>>
>>4137935
“I will give you my hand and guidance, but your lives are yours to live” you reply to the priestess. “I see…” she replies: “It seems that this is finally time for my people to forge their own purpose, as Great Aino said. I will discuss this with the other priests and you’ll be informed of the results as soon as possible. Thank you once again, goddess Agatha.” You nod and leave her for now. It feels like your reply is not what she really wished for. Maybe she expected for you to want to guide them more thoroughly as their previous goddess did? In any case, you’ve made your position known and all you have to do now is to wait.

As you walk to the surface you make a few back of the envelope calculations on the construction project that is lying in front of you. A whole city made for tens of thousands of people. The terrain is a bit hilly but it is relatively flat and only requires you to remove the forest to start building. You’d want it to have an option to expand, it needs to be future proof to have an option for easy electrification and introduction of personal vehicles, you need to plan defenses, infrastructure, industries and so on and so forth. You’re thinking of something like a combined grid and radial design with one of the outskirts of the city leading towards the Farsalos river. You also need plazas, parks, spots for commerce and so on and so forth. Maybe you could also start with the subway and bunker system as well? With no boring equipment, the only way to construct those is to dig a massive trench, build a tunnel out of masonry and then bury it all back again. It would be very difficult to do when there’s stuff on the surface.

The construction in the ruin took over a month and it was with abundance of materials and surviving foundations. Here you estimate that you’d need around… two years of constant work? Maybe even more… This is not a dealbreaker in of itself, but it would be hands down the biggest project you’ve ever planned. Unless you’re wishing to skim on a lot of aspects of the city you might need some divine intervention to build it all in a reasonable amount of time. What if you poke Belkh from the Ceno pantheon? Nike’ mentioned that he could build a whole city in a few weeks and he might even help you with a city plan. But then again, you’d be asking for potentially a pretty big favor from the Pantheon again…

Speaking of which, one of the things you’ve wanted to do is to look into Rheia’s future education. She seemed excited to have an opportunity to go to an Academy in one of the Polises so you might as well start preparing. You don’t think that you’d need more money that you already have. There is the passive income from the iron factory that you own and there is still a lot of gold left from back when you retook the dwarven ruin. You need to look into the study plans though. Things that Rheia should know to pass the entrance exams. And to get them you need to pay a visit to one of these academies which means a trip to one of the Polises.

There are a few options for you here. From the ones that caught your eye, there is Platania, the closest Polis to Farsalos with very pretty parks where you’ve already been. Then there is Ligoriana, the second closest polis on the banks of the largest lake in Ceno territory. There is also Teryia, the capital of the elven territories and the place where Haven’s family lives. A bit farther away is Rendina, the Polis on the western shore and the place where Sig’s family lives. There is also Elspen, the capital of the Cenophila on the southern coast. You could also just give Elspeth or Nike’ a call, maybe they could help you with this…

>Platania, the closest Polis
>Ligoriana, second closest Polis on the banks of a large lake
>Teryia, the elven capital
>Rendina, the most western Polis
>Elspen, the capital of Ceno
>Call Nike’ and see what she thinks

Teryia, Elspen and calling the pantheon. I guess the choice would be narrowed down by the call. Writing.
>>
>>4137973
After a few minutes of thought you narrow down your choices to Teryia and Elspen but you can’t seem to pick. From one hand, Teryia sounds very interesting. You doubt that you could take a closer look at their afterlife artifact since it is most likely protected, but it would be nice to finally pay a visit to Haven’s family. Plus, Royal Teryian Academy is one of the most prestigious academies in Ceno, which is not that surprising. You’ve asked Haven about it and she said that the majority of elven nobility and even royalty graduates from that particular academy, including her. It is pretty expensive, but it is most likely worth it and it would give Rheia some powerful connections with elven nobles if she decides to study there. However, you’re not sure if she is tough enough, it might be rough for her. In any case, you should manage to get a decent estimate of academy curriculum from there.

Then there is Elspen Academy. The most prestigious academy in Ceno and the place that trains the best of the best in all of its fields. From what you know, this academy has harsher entrance exams so you’ll manage to get the upper estimate for the requirements there. While expensive, it has extensive programs funded by both the government and the Pantheon. Also, by being the capital of the nation, Elspen has basically everything so it would be a worthwhile expedition and a decent place to live in for Rheia. It is also the closest settlement to Pantheon’s headquarters in Valhalla so you can expect some assistance if Pantheon remains friendly.

In the end you decide to make a call to Nike’ and ask her what she thinks. You find her muse exercising in her temple and ask her to message her patron which she immediately does. “Hey Ag, what’s up?” she greets you through Mina’s voice. It is always a bit weird how they use other people as living phones and just take them over when they need to, but Mina seems ok with it so you swallow your concerns and explain the situation. “Good idea with the Academy, but I’m not sure that Rheia’s mom would be happy considering her position about Rheia and you. But Rheia is an adult by our standards so she can make her own decision. I very much recommend Elspen Academy. Some people in the pantheon even pay visits there to act as temporary professors when time allows and Mort even runs his own Academy of Medicine personally. You can also expect assistance from the pantheon regarding the costs. It is not a big sum of money for us and I’m sure that Rheia would qualify for a grant even if you weren’t involved, if Helena is to be believed.
>>
>>4138044
I personally think that it would be best for you to avoid Teryian Royal Academy. Majority of people there are either elves, nobles or both. I think that Rheia would be very much bullied the moment she steps into a classroom. No offense, but I doubt that she’s tough enough to handle that. Also, you’d have to pay for that one. Our grants don’t expand on Teryian Academy due to a royal request. They have this whole intended class segregation in the Academy that I doubt you’d want to touch. And yeah, the artifact is closed for public. It is pretty big but you won’t be able to get in and there are a bunch of remnant elven Cup Bearers there. It’s a major pain to access mostly for that reason, Lott doesn’t like guests.

Regarding your city project, you should really ask both Yaw and Belkh since the former controls our industrial output and the latter is our best architect and city planner. They are both in the headquarters and you can take a ferry from Elspen to Valhalla, I’ll put you on the list. Unfortunately, I can’t teleport you at the moment, I just fought some sea monster and I’m mostly depleted. You’ll have to get there yourself. Feel free to pay me a visit if you decide to come here and see you around.”

Well, that’s nice. This means that you might as well pay a visit to the capital. You wanted to eventually take a trip there anyway. You’ll need to take some of your savings since it is the core of the empire. They probably have the best of the best markets around. Maybe you should even take Rheia or Haven along? Sig doesn’t seem to be that interested unfortunately… How do you plan to get there though?

You decide to do several large hops to get from Farsalos to Elspen while making the stops in Ligoriana and Tilisos on your way. You decided against going to Teryia for now since you want to save your visit for some special occasion for Haven or some sort of cultural event. Speaking of which, Haven is coming along with you on this trip along with Rheia. She would be helpful and Rheia should get out into the world more as well.

Before you leave you ask Sig and Mina to keep track of monsters and you ask Mina to try and find the medical plant that you’ve heard of that is supposed to grow somewhere in this wilderness. She said that she has heard of it as well and she will take a look as soon as she can. You leave them to it and prepare the gondola for the flight. Since you now have it you might as well use it and not subject your friends to stuff like flying insects and cold wind. You also take a significant sum of money with you in case you’d want to buy something in the capital.

Your friends board the gondola and you lift off to a decent altitude and start your way to the south. Within about an hour you fly over the coast of the largest lake in Ceno territory. It is called “Hilos” which is an altered form of Hioldu and Soqi which means “hearth lake” due to the fact that the lake is unusually warm at all times of the year. It probably has some kind of glow- quartz heating going on because the water is literally as warm as in a heated pool. Fascinating.

It takes you another 20 minutes to cross it and land nearby to the polis of Ligoriana somewhere in the rural territory. There you give a few coins to some farmer for letting you to store the gondola somewhere in his barn as the three of you head to the city. As all Ceno cities, Ligoriana has a distinct city center which in this case is not very central. The topography of the area has an appendix of terrain going into the lake which was used by Ceno pantheon to construct some fantasy- looking thin towers with red caps poking out of the place with lots of very elaborate buildings. The rest of the city mimics this white stone and red roofs style. The tallest tower is most likely local headquarters of the Pantheon where they keep the Cups, their personal facilities and stuff. The coasts are secured with marble walls with one of the areas dedicated for docks and the city also has this main trading street running through it that pulls a double duty as the main marketplace. Unlike Platania, Ligoriana has a simpler and straighter “fish skeleton” pattern of road grids with parallel streets connected with thinner and more numerous perpendicular streets.
>>
>>4138403
Your first stop is Ligoriana Academy which is a nice large complex on the very edge of the cliff on that appendix. It is separated into four separate buildings each representing its own section: scholars, mages, healers and heroes. You head for the scholar building as Rheia looks around with her jaw dropped. Inside you manage to catch a girl on the reception and ask her about the required materials. She lets you take a look into the book she had in the back with the required subjects. Well, you are somewhat hopeful, you’ve expected something worse. The worst parts would be regarding local history, philosophy, and so on but the easiest part would be, surprisingly, math. You’ve already given Rheia quite a lot of that and luckily base requirements for mathematical understanding are a bit low. Not too low, but she won’t be handling limits and logarithms and so on. Ceno managed to maintain Arabic numeral system with almost no alterations including the writing of the numbers. There are also some basic requirements for understanding finances and businesses. Apparently, scholars faculty contains subdivisions as well, one of them being focused on producing educated merchants. In any case, you’ve basically given Rheia all that you knew that was relevant to the exams already, now you need to buy a bunch of books and educate yourself to pass these as well.

You take a look around the market, and while you find some nice fresh water fish and some interesting bathhouses powered by glow-quartz, you don’t actually find anything interesting. There is a lot of stuff, but nothing that you’d desperately need. There are various iron and even some steel tools and weapons, both of which you can make on your own. There are some luxury foods and spices that you can’t carry a lot of at the moment and your home is filled with them. There are also a lot of various oddities, some of which are even possibly psi enhanced, but you decide that you most likely would find something much more worthwhile in the capital.
>>
>>4138413
At the very end you take a peek into the local Hall of Huntsmen. This city seems to have a much more of a sausage fest with less than a quarter of the people in the hall being female huntresses. Two of the huntsmen inside are what you’d describe as centaurs. Half men half horses with the part below the hips placed where horse’s neck should be. They are heavily armored and look pretty tough, one of them having heavy scarring on his face. You do note that several of the ships in the docks were flying Hall’s insignia so it is likely that this is one of the ways of how they respond to the threats. On the board you see a few articles, most of which are boring but some catch your interest:

>There is some kind of lake monster that has been reported by several fishermen. The description make it seem like a Loch- Ness monster: a large plump body with long neck and tail along with two pairs of flippers. The monster is reported to be enormous in size and it is fond of devouring fish, including the ones caught by fishermen’s boats. By all means it sounds more like an animal, but it has a very decent bounty on its head
>One of the wealthy citizens placed a request on a large piece of glow- quarts extracted from the lake’s depths. It is apparently relatively dangerous not only because it is underwater but also due to those blow- fish creatures that litter the lake’s floor. The bounty was pretty low but it was increased twice until it became worth the hassle
>A nearby village to the south is suffering from regular attacks by some kind of creature. This thing is big, airborne and it eats people, but it attacks randomly and people can’t tell what it looks like. By which they mean that they were looking straight at it and could only discern a vague outline. Invisible flying monster, now this sounds like fun.

In any case, you buy some minor supplies, eat out with your friends and think of continuing on…
>Take on one of the tasks from the Hall of Huntsmen and roll 1d20
>Continue on your way and roll 1d20

Find a nice room for us 3 and leave Rheia there studying while Haven and Ag deal with this.

Let's try to kill this thing the old fashioned way like Sig mentioned (shame she isn't here she would have liked it, we should get a trophy) while we have all that power I want to train our ACTUAL skill with the blade since even if with all the tk we still need to be good handling the weapon like Nike is.
Focus our powers in deflecting whatever the thing throws at haven

I've read through the archives and been lurking with interest for a couple of threads (don't worry, I'll join in soon) after ignoring it for a few months. I wonder when the Mad Goddess will show up again, and I suppose the other time categories weren't a thing in this version of the P4verse.

Welcome, I hope you’ve enjoyed the story. Quick question, what do you mean by time categories and P4verse? For some reason I can’t understand what you wanted to say.
>>
>>4141875
I mean I was referring to stuff from the CYOA i.e. the different programs for x years. I suppose they don't exist here.
>>
>>4141888
Ah, I remember now. Well, technically there was a “500 year” program in this setting, it is so- called mark 1 pods and they were mostly prototypes with less radical augments. The people in those pods became the “bloodline founders” and they are the reason for all psi gifted people and people with aug remnants (like Haven and Sig). Mark 2 pods are the previous two generations of SGs and Mark 3 are Ag’s generation of gods. I couldn’t introduce other options because they didn’t fit with the new setting. 100 year pods would open up in apocalyptic wasteland and there were no manned interstellar missions yet so those options didn’t exist.

>>4138493
That invisible flying monster seems like a good test of your abilities. Sigrid might be right, it feels almost like cheating when you use your powers at full potential so maybe to make it better you could handicap yourself? No telekinesis-based attacks unless there is an emergency, they seem to be too powerful and carry you way more than your strength or skill. You’ll also take Haven along with you since she also has enhanced vision. Maybe she could be helpful. Regarding Rheia, you don’t want to endanger her. She would be staying in a rented room while you are hunting and to keep her occupied you went ahead and bought some books from the Academy. Interestingly, these books are printed while the majority of other books that you’ve seen were manually copied. Looks like the Pantheon provides some additional assistance to the Academies…

Haven and you register your plans to take on this threat in the Hall of Huntsmen and set off towards the affected villages. With your luck you hoped to just bump into such creature, but that didn’t happen. The area is too large for such random encounter and you’ve made your way to the affected settlements without anything to talk about. In that area you find a cluster of five villages with farm areas in between along with a decently sized town called Petra located centrally between them. Close by towards the North- West is one of the Ceno military strongholds and local farms rely on providing goods and services for the army to keep their economies running which means that the central town has higher proportion of things like restaurants.

You get into the town and split with Haven for a few hours to ask around the place for more information. Apparently, the main affected region is one particular farm to the south- east close to the bank of the river. Other regions report only sporadic attacks on lone travelers and farmers in the fields but there the creature attacks happen even inside the village’s inner wall. Also, there is some information of the existence of several of these monsters, but it is hard to tell. So, your next waypoint is set, time to get moving…
>>
>>4149149
The trip to the other village should have taken you about five hours of walking, but you decided to make a shortcut with flying again and you get there in just a few minutes. From the altitude you immediately notice that the fields in this region are somewhat overgrown. It is likely that farmers are refusing to work in such conditions, which is understandable. The village itself, which is amusingly called Krapi, is in a pretty bad shape too. Few people are outside and it seems that usual village militia is beefed up to whoever can hold weapons or farming tools. From them you find out that the attacks started around three weeks ago mostly focusing on people outside of the walls, but recently as farmers stopped venturing into the fields the raids started happening closer and closer to the village itself until about five days ago a flock of these monsters attacked the village center and abducted a bunch of people before fleeing. Villagers fear that the next attack will occur within a day or two.

Villagers claim that the monsters arrive somewhere from across the river from a nearby forest, but no one knows what they look like for real. Everyone has their own opinions, but in general you narrow it down to having a serrated beak around half a meter long along with a pair of wings and at least several limbs with sharp talons. Whatever it is, it sounds nasty. Time to see what you can do…

Surveying the forest it is, writing
>>
>>4149185
You decide to quickly survey the forest to try and find where these creatures are coming from. You take Haven along and start flying in a search pattern above the forest trying to find whatever you can. At first it doesn’t help much. Even with your amazing vision and additional senses you don’t encounter anything no matter whether you’re flying through the forest or above it. You find a bunch of various animals, a few weird creatures that look like strange hybrids of several different animals, a bunch of abandoned roads, a couple long ago depopulated villages that no one touched for decades and so on.

The only interesting thing that you’ve found was a small creature that produced beautiful multicolored light refractions around it. It was the size of a large crow and it looked somewhat like a griffon from the myths of your time. It looked like a white cat with wings, large paws and a massive beak in front that separated into three “petals” covered in serrations on the seams and on the inside. Its armaments and mouth suggest that this creature was a predator, but it is too small to hunt humans. Maybe it eats mice or small birds? In any case, it was trying to blind you with flashes of light, flying away, hissing and smacking its beak if it felt cornered. Fascinating creature

Then you continued your search for another three hours or so until it hit you. Literally. The creatures apparently maintain higher altitude of flight compared to you and they were not detected by your senses as you were mostly focusing on the ground. Suddenly you felt intense pain in your back and a large beak attempted to close on your face causing painful gashing wounds on your head and neck. From the surprise you’ve almost dropped Haven, which was a good thing as you saw a glimpse of another of these creatures almost scoring a hit on her but rapid change of altitude caused it to miss.
>>
>>4149286
A blast of force dislodges the creature from your back and allows you to accelerate down as fast as you can. As you fly past Haven you catch her with telekinesis and the two of you rapidly get to the forest floor. The creatures are too big to easily navigate between the trees which allows you to catch your breath for a few moments. You are messed up though. There are holes in the back and sides of your steel armor leaking your whiteish blood and it also keeps getting into your eyes as you bleed from your head and face. It is nasty, Dan bless for the pain override. On the bright side, now you know what the mouth of these monsters looks like…

It is fascinating though. You can see in infrared and UV, you have a radar and the only warning you’ve received was a very quiet sound that the creature’s wings produced. They are probably modeled after owls since those birds have special feathers that make them almost completely silent. They do seem to decloak the moment before they attack so you’ve caught a glimpse of the monster that was hunting Haven. It looked like a mature version of that tiny griffon: large lion- like body, huge wings, sharp claws and a beak split into three petals filled with sharp serrations. That means that these monsters are capable of reproduction. But then where does a monster end and an animal begin? Villagers claimed that these creatures steal sheep and goats plus they maimed the cows once so maybe they are just hunting humans like prey instead of being programmed to target humans. Questions for later…

As you’ve got a hold of yourself you’ve managed to tune your vision sufficiently to see the distortion outline around the griffons which allowed you to slowly and painstakingly track them to what you assume to be their lair. It is a large hill with lots of holes dug into it and you saw some of these griffons flying in and out of it. Now, what should you do with this. You can’t let these things threaten the villagers, but most likely you won’t catch all of them. Maybe if you destroy their lair, you’d kill most of their reproductive potential?

Roll 1d20 and…

Kill some of them and then we destroy the nest, maybe they deem this place too dangerous and relocate

Same as before, use TK defensively, but if they swarm us too much give them hell

Oh right, I explained it badly. Basically there are lots of those griffons inside, dozens at least. It might not be feasible to manually chop up all of them. The sword option would leave most of them alive. Just fyi

use TK then, but I still want to train our sword fighting on some of them

And chop those who flee

Alright, it seems that two people want to destroy the nest manually and one wants to drop a mountain on it. Unfortunately these choices are exclusive so the fighting wins. Writing

Player notice: next post would be the last for today. I have to wrap up early because I'm having a flight tomorrow. Sorry for the short thread

You decided that you’d try to destroy this nesting area, but you won’t be exterminating all of those creatures. You’d kill some and the rest would hopefully scatter. So, you and Haven prepare for the fight. Haven places herself in the treetops where the griffons would have issues getting to her and she prepares her crossbow while you draw your short sword and shield in preparations to enter the structure. It unfortunately promises to be too small for your greatsword.

Very quickly you realize that the idea was not such a great one. These creatures retain the blinding ability from their childhood and they are easily capable of piercing your relatively thin steel armor. Luckily, they are not powerful enough to pierce your shield, but you’d be surprised if anything short of anti-tank weapon could do so. As you enter one of the tunnels you end up having to resort to telekinesis very quickly. Your weapon lacks reach and the confined spaces don’t allow you to outmaneuver them. At the same time their beaks have enough curvature and armor to shrug off blows from your blade making it near impossible to get past them and harm the body itself.

You strangle and decapitate a pair of adult griffons. Their wailings really mess with your chill. Killing monsters is relatively easy, they are usually unfeeling killing machines. Here these things are much closer to animals. On the inside you even find a dug-out chamber with dozens of eggs and a few hatched baby griffons. So, it is not even a hive, it is more like dozens of nests just dug into the same hill. Silencing these creatures feels like stabbing your own heart, after just a couple of these nests you just can’t go on any longer as you start crying and fall on your knees. It just feels too real, too personal.

You try to collapse the hill but your efforts provide only marginal results. Most of the nests are supported with too much rock and dirt and the structure is not porous enough to easily collapse. In the end you are forced to retreat with Haven after killing around a dozen or so adults and what seems to be countless of those adorable sky kitties. You do grab a decapitated head and you think that the best you can do is to report your findings and let the Hall of Huntsmen deal with this problem on their own. For now you just want a cold bath to forget what you’ve just tried to do…

And on this note I have to wrap up for today. Sorry for an extremely short thread, but I have to start packing things now. Next week we should hopefully continue as usual. See you guys next time and don’t forget that I’m online during the week. Feel free to ask questions, give suggestions and discuss.

Well, good news on this side. I successfully left Moscow and I'm starting to clean up my temporary flat. I don't see any issues with running next Saturday so I plan to run as usual.
