EPISODE 4

The speed at which your situation seemed to be improving was nothing short of bizarre. Having walked out of your cell and into the halls of Cloning Facility without any resistance had, just moments earlier, seemed like an impossibility. That you were doing just that now made you wonder if you had really passed out and this was a dream. The sound of boots on the deck and the clacking of armor from both yourself and the armored figure next to you, however, was a clear indication it was all very real.

In the darkened hold of the cell block, you had first struggled to identify the mysterious visitor. Your mind had raced through the possibilities, wondering what strange combination of circumstances had brought them to your prison. Wrax and Jango had been the first of your thoughts, but neither had been the correct answer. Jango was long gone you knew, left from the planet on a Separatist shuttle. Wrax, of course, had been gone since that fateful day which now seemed so far behind you. This Mandalorian with you now was indeed someone quite different. Someone quite important. His short haircut is streaked with gray and his scars tell of many battles.

He turns his head to you, seeming to have noticed your gaze lingering on him for a moment too long.

“Trying to guess who I am?” he asks, his eyes focusing on you.

“Sir,” you answer quickly, “My apologies. I still don’t understand why I was released.”

“You were released because I’ve had it ordered,” he says simply, “We need to speak. If I like your answers, you may just stay free.”

That was certainly straightforward enough, you had to admit, it at least sounded more fair than facing the Kaminoan’s tribunal again. The thought of the three of them judging 2337 and yourself before you had even spoken made your blood boil, but the memory reminds you that your brother was surely facing them now, alone.

“My brother, 2337,” you turn entirely to the Mandalorian, “He was taken out just before me. They’re going to-”

“Talk more about his incident and put him back in the cell,” he replies, stopping and turning to face you, “The Kaminoans are headless at the moment. There’s no one to approve any reconditioning orders. Cogs are moving with anyone at the controls.”

His response goes some way to putting you at ease, but the thought of 2337 under pressure still bothered you. The armored warrior doesn’t seem to care about your unease, however, and he begins to continue down the hall again. You follow after him quickly, worried that straying too far from him might cause you to be detained again.

“Sir,” you start to say…

>”I need to know if my brothers are alright before we start.”
>”There’s been a lot that’s happened today. What do you want to know?”

“We’ve gone through a lot today, I’ll answer anything but I have to know if my brothers are alright.”

The Mandalorian warrior nods, his face hard but his eyes showing some understanding for your condition.

“You really are different.”

The words register, but you’re not entirely certain how to respond immediately. He doesn’t give you a chance, however, turning and continuing down the hall.

“I’ll find out,” he reassures you, “It’s been a big day for a lot of reasons.”

After you catch up again, you focus on keeping in step with him as he walks quickly onward, leading you out of the administrative area and into the larger training facility. There seems to have been some minor cleanup since you were pulled into the tribunal and later tossed into a cell. The number of droid parts littering the halls has decreased significantly, the maintenance droids still operating working in overdrive to remove them. The scene reminds you of watching your brothers being stacked upon the corpse cart you used to save 3034. Perhaps all the dead Clones had been cleaned away already…

With a sharp turn, the Mandalorian starts going down a hall that’s familiar, but only barely. It’s the way to the apartments the training sergeants had all lived in. Some doors are open, but the insides are largely empty. There doesn’t seem to be a great deal of battle scars here, meaning they likely had been open and empty from before the attack.

“Most of the Cuy’val Dar shipped out just after you all went to Geonosis,” the warrior says, without prompting, “Once they had their credits, they had left quickly. I almost did too.”

“You were one of Jango’s sergeants,” you say, realizing you should have made that leap much earlier. Perhaps your head was more banged up than you realized. The Mandalorian doesn’t immediately respond, instead activating a door panel and entering the room before the both of you. The room is dark, but you enter in, squinting to make out anything.

As the door slides shut behind you, the lights come on, revealing a rather plainly decorated room… filled with an incredible amount of weapons. Blasters, ammo, detonators, mines, and more are all piled high, and numerous empty cases cover the floor.

There’s also…

>Your beskad stabbed into the wall.

The snarling mythosaur head of the blade greets you at almost eye level, driven into the wall of the apartment with a large amount of force. It’s bitten deep into the wall, the beskar easily beating the construction material. Without thinking too much about it, you put a hand on the hilt and the other on the wall, carefully removing it from the wound left behind.

“How did this get here?” you ask simply, someone clearly knew it was yours and that it had been taken at the cell block by security.

“One of my lads,” the Mandalorian replies, clearing away a pile of blaster pistols on top of a large container, “He thought you might ask about it, so he went ahead and grabbed it.”

You put the blade on your belt, just as he opens the case. His body blocks your view of the contents for a moment, but a few seconds later he’s handing you a fresh helmet from inside it.

“You’re missing this too,” he explains.

You nod, taking the helmet into your hand and then quickly putting it on, perhaps out of training, perhaps out of comfort. As the HUD flickers to life and the visor activates, you’re immediately struck by a few unfamiliar features that appear.

“A prototype,” the Mandalorian says, “Call it a field test.”

“Yes, Sir,” is all you can manage to say. While looking rather stock from the outside, you confirm that the helmet definitely has a few bells and whistles more than the standard model. The visual clarity seems to be sharper and clearer for one thing. The weight feels slightly strange on your head, perhaps it was balanced differently? You push your curiosity aside as the warrior turns back to you.

“My name is Kal Skirata,” he introduces himself at last, “I’ve heard a lot about you 0027.”

You keep silent for the moment. The name was familiar, but that wasn’t too strange for one of the Sergeants. You still don’t particularly recall much about him.

“Let’s talk about today,” he continues, “I want to know what happened from the moment you landed.”

It’s a long story, you think to yourself, and you were until very recently worried about time. The look on the sergeant’s face, however, seems to show he’s not worried about time at all.

You decide that you’ll have to trust 2337 will be alright. You start telling your own version of Kamino...

>Particularly noting the strange, unexpected, and terrible things you encountered.

You start speaking about the landing zone, focusing on how your battalion had deployed in the earliest stages. The assault had been entirely textbook until Lieutenant Falx had charged into the hangar with just his squad. That’s when you had broken off from your own to help, but strangely everyone else seemed fine with them being cut off and potentially destroyed. Looking back at it, you wonder if it was because they perhaps expected to be destroyed, so long as it let the other squads have an easier fight on the way in. The part about getting the drop on the Droideka really seems to get Kal’s attention, but when you mention how quickly those troopers could have been lost, he jumps in.

“There’s been a lot of casualties these first two battles,” he agrees, a hint of anger in his voice, “The tactics that are being used make them inevitable, even the Commandos were devastated by how the Jedi were using them.”

That certainly made sense. From what you had seen of Jedi tactics, it mostly involved charging forward. While they could get away with blocking shots with their sabers, most troopers were quickly out of luck.

You press on with the tale, introducing your own chance encounter with Jedi Padawan named Skywalker and the battle with the red saber. You make sure to spend a moment to highlight how Guile had managed to wound the white-bearded warrior and how the two of you had held until help arrived. Skirata seems impressed that you had managed to successfully guard the wounded Jedi Master named Kota, but he doesn’t let you dwell too long on it.

“And then came your Jango mission?” he prompts you forward.

“Yes, Sir,” you say, “We were able to infiltrate in and, with the help of a young Clone, we made contact with the troopers holding out at the barracks… including Alpha-96.”

Figuring that he was already well aware of your encounter with the ARC, as well as the details of his demise, you’re surprised when he raises his hand to stop you from going on.

“What did you think of him?”

That was definitely a question you weren’t expecting. Aside from your brothers, you’re not certain if you’ve ever been asked to give your opinion of another Clone.

The words come from your mouth with firm conviction. You believe entirely that 2337 had done the correct thing and, more importantly, you find yourself convinced you would have done much the same thing as he had to stop the killing.

“If 2337 hadn’t been there,” you continue, “I don’t know if Alpha-96 would have been stopped.

“Most clones wouldn’t have intervened,” Kal agrees.

“We’re not like most Clones,” is all you can think to reply.

“So I’ve noticed. What happened on your way to Jango?”

“We tried to find him,” you answer, going into the story of your tracking him.

The discovery of the dead ARC troopers in the medical bay had been your first indication that you had to be ready. Their lightsaber wounds had cued you into an enemy that would be fearsome to face without an advantage. You go into detail, explaining how 7651, 5309, and you had decided that speed was going to be your only chance to head them off. You recount the crossing of the Citadel training course and the fortunate sniper fire that had given you a clear way across to the hangar side of the facility. Kal nods here, but doesn’t interrupt.

Having reached your predicted destination for the Separatist escape, you explained, you ordered the only ship in the hangar to be rigged to explode. Guessing that it was the enemy’s intended escape route and then set your trap and ambush. Seeing what the red-blade from earlier was capable of had been your largest insight into the coming fight, and you intended to use every advantage you could muster. The Mandalorian seems pleased as you explain how you had planned to either blow the ship with the Separatist leader on it or use it to lure them into the hallway to be killed there.

“Anyone like the Jedi is a deadly enemy,” he offers, “They can almost sense danger before you pull the trigger. It was clever of you to have a backup.”

“It… He wasn’t a Jedi,” you try to correct him, “At least, he didn’t seem to have that sense. He was more like a wild animal, but his body let him do things with a lightsaber even a Jedi would have had trouble with.”

“And you survived him.”

“Barely,” you acknowledge, “This beskad kept me from being killed, but it was my brothers who saved me.”

“And that’s when you killed the Separatist.”

“General Grievous,” you recall the warrior’s name, “With the detonators. And that’s when Jango appeared, while I was tending to 5309’s wounds...”

“He was angry,” you explain, “At the Jedi, maybe at himself… but mostly at me.”

Skirata leans forward slightly, silently prompting you to continue.

“The night he was injured, why he ended up in the bacta tank,” you ease yourself into the memory, “Was my brothers and me. We were the ones who attacked him when he started beating our sergeant. He had a blaster out and was going to kill him.”

“And you all got the jump on Jango Fett,” Skirata shakes his head slightly.

You frown slightly behind your helmet visor. It wasn’t as though you had ambushed him. Jango was the one who had walked into your Battle Circle and started to attack. He was the one who had forced you all to react. What else could have done, you think to yourself?

“He didn’t see us threats,” you say firmly, “We were just supposed to wait for our turn.”

“Most Clones are bred for obedience,” Kal replies, “You were too.”

“We were raised to care for each other,” you answer, a little too quickly perhaps, “Sergeant Wrax made sure of that.”

“Wrax Krit,” Skirata says with little emotion, “You all helped him to escape.”

You nod slowly. The official story had been that he had used you all, a mixture of abusing his authority and lying to you. In reality, however, he hadn't even been able to walk without you all carrying him. For some reason, it felt good to finally get to tell the story, to finally let someone hear it all.

“Where did he go?” he asks, “Why did only one of you go with?”

He remembered Countdown, you think suddenly. Your Vode’s mastery of all things technical was an easy enough cover, you had told the Kaminoans that Wrax ordered him to fly the shuttle. While the sergeant did indeed need him, it was by Countdown’s own choice. He didn’t want to leave Wrax floating in space half dead. You had not wanted that either, but you had chosen to stay with 2337, Guile, and 4582. Skirata wanted to know what had separated you all.

“It was our duty to fight for the Republic,” you answer, “Countdown went because he saw it as duty to Wrax. He made us what we are.”

“And what are you?”

“Vode.”

“Do you regret not going with you brother?”

You pause, putting the words together in your head.

“No,” you answer truthfully...

>“I don’t regret it. Because of us, more brothers are alive.”

“Your commitment to keeping other Clones alive is a worthy one,” Skirata says, “Wrax taught you how to fight and how to care for each other, that’s obvious.”

He ends his sentence almost as if it’s unfinished. Walking over to a counter laden with ammo, he leans back against it and folds his arms.

“Why do you think Wrax was training you all?”

The obvious answer was for the Republic, you think. He had trained you to be the most effective fighters he could, surely you had proven that true more than once? If he was asking why a Mandalorian sergeant had spent so much time on specifically your brothers and you, you were less certain.

“He wanted to make us strong,” you begin, “To be the best.”

“Are you?”

That was less obvious. As much as you had accomplished today, you hadn’t been entirely successful. On Geonosis, from the Arena, to the aid station, to the capital hive, you and your brothers had been where the fighting was thickest and your brothers had needed you the most. Here on Kamino you had faced more terrible enemies. Some you had stopped forever, others who may have gotten away, but you had certainly saved lives in the process, you reassured yourself. Failing to bring Jango back had lost you a mission, but had it been worth saving 3034? Or any of the others who had survived with 2337? If he was repossessed, would it still be worth it?

“No,” you say bluntly.

You had learned well that there was room to improve. As much as you had found the tactics of the Jedi and Lieutenant Falx in the hangar questionable because of their lack of concern for casualties, your own squad had fared little better than most.

“My squad took heavy injuries,” you begin, “At least one death and maybe more. As far as I know, 2337 and I are the only ones still conscious.”

Reminding yourself on how you had asked him to find out about them, you can’t help but note he’s not done much in that regard.

“You want to reduce your casualties?” Kal says, somewhat intrigued.

“Wrax taught us how to complete our objectives,” you reiterate, “But we believe that dying in the process is natural, we accept it because it could be the difference for the mission being successful or not. I want to...”

>”Become stronger, to make sure their sacrifices aren’t in vain.”

“You could train your whole life,” Kal remarks, his eyes glancing at something else in the room behind you, “And never be that strong.”

“I have to keep trying,” you stay focused on him, determined, “It’s how I was raised. It’s how I’ve lived and fought. I was the only one who made it to the end, but I didn’t have enough left to fight Jango.”

“I’ve known Jango a long time,” the Mandalorian answers, his eyes meeting your own again, “He’s more stubborn and prideful than most, you would have had to cut his head off to stop him. If he wanted to leave there wasn’t anything else you could do.”

You clench your fists slightly, the tightening of your arms and cracking of your knuckles just barely audible. The fact that Jango had been determined to leave, rather than forcibly taken was enraging. It was almost as if your mission had been handicapped from the start, you can’t help but think, and the efforts of your brothers had been misplaced. Maybe you all could have helped 2337 at the barracks, keeping them from falling until help arrived? Maybe you could have assisted the lone sniper or the Clone that was being chased by the droid squad? Would any of those have been like 3034, alive now because of you? Instead you would likely never know, because you had been focused on the mission. You had made the right choices, you knew, but someone else’s choice had kept you from being successful.

“But you’re right,” Kal continues, watching your reaction, “You can become stronger.”

“How, Sir?” you ask directly.

“Strength to a Mandalorian warrior,” he explains, “Is life. It is the struggle to improve and become greater. Fighting for yourself, your brothers, your clan, your Mandalore. They all make you stronger, but it takes an entirely different kind of strength to fight in the first place.”

It was not an unfamiliar sentiment, you realize.

“Wrax once told me,” you recall the final Battle Circle fight with him, “That Mandalorians are divided, but still connected by that belief. That all have to fight and be willing to fight, that all are bound by honor, language, weapons and armor, and family.”

“And Mandalore,” Kal adds.

“Their home,” you reply.

“Their leader,” the warrior corrects.

He stands up straight, stretching slightly and setting his shoulders back and square.

“Krit taught you right,” he says firmly, “But he didn’t teach you whole. Maybe he was waiting for later or maybe he never intended you to know the difference, it doesn’t matter. The last word and the first thought of any Mandalorian warrior is the Mandalore, their leader and guide.”

>”We were raised for the Republic above all,” you say with no doubt.

>”We were raised for the Republic above all,” you say with no doubt.

“The Republic isn’t your Mandalore,” Skirata explains, “No more than a sergeant or a captain is your father. They lead you, they order you, but they’re not the same. The Kaminoans created you, but they’re even worse. To them, you’re nothing but units.”

You catch yourself nodding at the last point, that had seemed to have proven true enough for you.

“By right,” he continues, “Jango is the Mand’alor. He hasn’t used the title himself for some time and we’re weaker for it. The clans, the splinter groups, the pretenders and more all keep competing with each other, that’s where our strength has been, but also our weakness. Loyalties to clan or family only get us so far.”

“Are you loyal to Jango?” you ask, somewhat mystified by the revelation Jango Fett was the leader of all Mandolorians.

Kal smiles.

“I am loyal to Mandalore,” he answers, but keeps from saying Jango’s name immediately, you notice, “The Jango you know hasn’t wanted loyalty for a long time, all he wants are credits and his memories. I’ve learned he wants more though, Boba is proof enough of that. Perhaps leaving is another sign.”

“Why do you think he left?” you press the question.

“Jango has his reasons, I’m sure. Guessing them is a waste of time, it would be much easier to just try to find out. It might be that he wants to raise Boba far and away from the Republic and the Jedi. Maybe with the credits in his pocket he’ll go and try to keep living his life as a mercenary. Plenty of other Sergeants left as soon as they were paid.”

“You said that you almost did too,” you recalled from your walk over, “Why did you stay?”

“I have my reasons too,” Kal admits, “To me, they’re almost just like Boba is to Jango.”

“You have sons?” you ask, remembering he had referred to them earlier as well.

“I do, biological ones at least,” he says a bit nebulously, “But I’ve also raised warriors.”

He nods his head at something past you and you at last turn around. You see a Clone like yourself, but also very different somehow. He’s wearing ARC armor, reaching up to remove the helmet from his head.

“This is one of them,” Kal introduces…

>“A’den.”

The Clone puts the helmet down to his side, smiling quite happily. Although he naturally, or perhaps unnaturally, looks much the same as you, you’re able to pinpoint a few differences very quickly. He’s definitely larger than you and most other Clones.

“I’ve got good news, Kal’buir,” A’den opens up quickly, “Ordo’s just confirmed the Kaminoans are calling an emergency meeting of their elites. They’re going to start selecting a new Prime Minister within the next cycle or two.”

“Good,” Skirata answers, “We can at least count on them to be coldly efficient, even to one of their own.”

You’re left a bit in the dark about the conversation and tilt your helmet slightly.

“Who is this one?” A’den asks, a curious look crossing his face.

“CT-0027, please introduce yourself,” Kal urges you.

For a moment, you hesitate what else you would say besides your designation. Skirata had basically said everything already. You elect not to question it, however, instead coming to attention and rattling off your standard report.

“CT-0027, Shriek Hawk Battalion, Third Company,” you state plainly. The ARC trooper’s smile twists a bit in confusion, before becoming a deep scowl. He snaps to attention himself.

“ARC Null-12,” he barks loudly, staring past you, “Hello, CT-0027, Shriek Hawk Battalion, Third Company, are you operating within standard procedure today?!”

His… humor is quite evident, you think to yourself, he’s just having a bit of fun. You quickly adjust your stance and tone.

“...my brothers call me Double-Oh, good to meet you, A’den.”

With a flash, the smile is back on his face.

“That’s a bit better,” he says, changing his stance, “Now, what brings you here?”

“I did,” Kal answers him, “Double-Oh was the last one to see Jango on the planet, I had to pull him out of a cell over a dead Alpha-class.”

“Killed an Alpha?” A’den says, suddenly confused again.

“My brother did,” you try to explain quickly, “But it was only to stop him from killing other Clones.”

“This sounds like a long story,” the ARC looks to his father.

“It is,” Kal nods, walking over to him, “But I have a much shorter one for now. I believe we have a unique opportunity.”

A’den smiles again, seeming to understand his meaning.

“An opportunity for what?” you finally force yourself to ask.

This time, Kal Skirata smiles...

>”Making you stronger."

The words register, but you’re not sure immediately what to make of them.

“Stronger, how?” you ask searchingly.

“The Republic is going to need soldiers that can do things that need done,” Kal starts to explain, “Things that most troopers can’t do.”

“Like the Commandos? The ARCs?” you offer.

Skirata nods.

“A’den and his brothers are ARCs as well, but a different class. They’re better, but all ARCs and Commandos are trained to do those kinds of missions. The question is if they’re still able to do them.”

He motions to A’den who quickly takes his side.

“Casualties among the Alpha-Class ARCs has been high,” A’den reports, “They lost a lot of lads defending the Kaminoan government, being caught on the backfoot meant they took heavy casualties fast and early. It’s looking like they’re not going to be as effective as Jango or the Kaminoans had planned.”

“The Commando units were devastated by Geonosis too,” Kal jumps in, “They were used like hammers when they were supposed to be scalpels. Too many were lost in frontal charges.”

You think back to Galant squad, they had been some of the most fearsome Clones you had ever seen on a battlefield. They were just as vulnerable to turbolaser and heavy blaster fire though…

“The combined effect,” Skirata continues, “Is that there’s going to be a need to fill out those units, to make new ARCs, and potentially come up with new ways that exceptional Clones can contribute more to the Grand Army.”

You keep silent. A part of you wants to ask what they mean by exceptional Clones, but you're willing to bet there’s a reason you’ve been pulled out of your cell.

“The Alphas aren’t quite keen on my brothers and me,” A’den picks up on the conversation, “Neither are the bloody Kaminoans. However, there aren’t enough of the Alphas to do it all and the Kaminoans can’t breed new brothers overnight or replace the kind of training the Alphas got or how Kal’biur raised us.”

“Or how Wrax raised my brothers,” you add.

“You’re tracking now,” Kal agrees, “The Kaminoans are going to be in flux while they try to get their leadership put back together. The Jedi won’t interfere in how the Kaminoans do their business. They won’t be able to do much with the broken units, meaning they’ll probably focus on deploying the healthy ones while battalions like yours are in recovery. Our opportunity is in the interim.”

The Mandalorian places a hand on A’den’s shoulder.

“We’re going to give them a ready-made solution, one that’s right under their noses,” he finally reveals, “I want A’den to give you a crash course, along with a few other Clones that we’ve tapped. His brothers and some of my Commandos will be doing the same. By the time the new Prime Minister is picked, we’ll be able to present you all as the answer to their problem.”

You’re taken aback slightly. ARC training? Commando training? Something else entirely? It was all very sudden.

“How will this all happen?” you ask, very interested at the prospect.

“The basics are already being worked,” Kal deflects, “But what I need now is a commitment from you. When this is over, there’s a good chance that we’ll be able to put together a completely new unit for special tasks, similar to the Commandos. It’s also likely they’ll want to defuse this training through the ranks, like the ARCs were intended for. I want to know which you’re more inclined to.”

Getting tailored, special training was certainly an incredible opportunity. From the casualties alone, you considered, the Grand Army was likely going to need to change drastically. This group seemed like the forefront of that change. You noticed that Kal had said you though…

“Are my brothers also being selected? CT-2337, CT-4457, and CT-4582?”

Skirata shakes his head.

“Prospects, but not in this round,” he tells you, “Maybe not at all.”

The prospect is suddenly a bit less bright. Leaving your brothers behind was a big decision to take all at once. You think for a moment on what would happen if you were pulled from the group. Perhaps 2337 would get to do his medical training and maybe 4582 and Guile would be a piloting or sniper pairing? Or maybe they would stay together and you would be gone, just like Countdown was. There was the chance you could come back to the squad after our training, perhaps you’d be able to pass it on to them as well…

“It’s clear that you’re special, Double Oh,” Kal says directly, “I think you know that. The question is how you’re going to take advantage of that specialness?”

You take a breath...

>”I want in on the special unit. It sounds like the place where I’ll do the most good for the Republic.”

>I want to return to my brothers after the training is over. We’re strongest when we’re together.”

As exciting as a special unit would be, you couldn’t shake the feeling you were stronger with your brothers than without them. The chance to get specialized training and sharing it with them and other Clones was very much a chance to help their survivability as well. If it was anything like sharing the Battle Circle had been, you had every indication that the other Clones would be quick learners and benefit from the experience.

Kal glances to A’den, the Clone slumps his shoulders as an overexaggerated look of defeat washes over him.

“You called it,” the ARC trooper admits to his father.

“Call it intuition,” Skirata answers him before readdressing you, “I figured you might say that. Just keep it in mind. If you complete the training like I expect you will, it might be we get a hold of you for a special mission or too later on.”

That was certainly an exciting prospect as well, you had to admit to yourself. Working beside the Commandos and Jedi on Geonosis had given you a belief that your brothers and you could do amazing things, the fight here on Kamino had confirmed it. This war that you all had been bred for would certainly have a need for many special missions before it was over, you couldn’t help but think that you would be involved in more than one of them.

“A’den is, like his brothers, very talented,” Kal explains, “They were bred with genetics improved from your own baseline, so some of it won’t be able to transfer. That’s just a fact, he can’t teach you to have perfect memory recall or to be taller. He’ll teach you other skills that we’ll focus on as the basis of your program: Stealth, Adaptability, and Lethality. My lads are all the best warriors I’ve ever trained, he’ll pass that on to you as well.”

You notice that A’den seems almost completely focused on Kal’s every word. He’s mostly emotionless, until the Mandalorian makes a mention of his skills. The ARC trooper smiles pridefully as his father compliments his talents.

“Each of my lads have their own personal tastes in combat and sorting out enemies, which are important to mention as well,” Skirata continues, “I’ve selected you to train under A’den, because I think your physical characteristics make you a good fit for his abilities as well.”

“I’ve always led the way for my brothers physically,” you acknowledge, “What sort of training?”

>”Blade work, as learned from me.”

Almost immediately, the weight of the beskad on your hip feels like it’s increasing slightly. Your head lowers toward the blade. The mythosaur’s sneer is as prominent as it has always been but for some reason there’s a difference in its look. Perhaps the heat from the Separtist’s lightsaber had deformed it slightly?

“Vibroblades are my usual fare,” A’den says, “But I’ll be able to teach you how to handle that blade properly.”

The line is delivered with just enough ego to make you reflexively wince. Had you not gotten the better of Sergeant Wrax with this blade? How many droids had you destroyed and knocked out of commission with it in just two battles? Could any other Clone claim to have gone up against a lightsaber and somehow survived?

“Maybe we’ll both teach each other something,” you say confidently.

For just a second, the most fleeting of moments, the smile vanishes from A’den’s face. His eyes visibly widen and his pupils contract as he stares intensely at you. There’s a primal sort of anger behind them that makes the hair on the back of your neck and arms involuntarily raise. The look he gives you is no different than the one the Separatist Grievous had when he was trying to kill you. The larger Clone almost seems to radiate an aura of wrath that makes you suddenly incredibly aware of just how injured you still are and how vulnerable you were if he simply stepped forward.

“That would be interesting,” A’den says at the end of the display. He slips back into his easy smile and you feel a cold shiver at the thought of how fast he had changed between states.

It’s Kal, to your surprise, that has drawn a blade without you noticing. It’s not quite like any vibroblade you’ve ever seen, the blade a triangle shape giving it distinctly three sides and edges.

“I could put this anywhere in this room,” he explains, balancing the handle on the side of his hand. He flips it up, the blade turning once, twice, and then a third time before he closes his hand and catches it. “The beskad is a bit bulkier, and more made for cracking bones and armor, but using it to end a fight quickly would give you that edge you’re looking for. Even how you pulled it out of the wall tells me that you have a lot to get sorted about it. A’den will teach you. You will learn.”

You nod, affirming his words. The ARC trooper looks completely back to normal. You file it in your way to be careful with him, there was a temper there that had a hair trigger. It finally strikes you that his name means “rage” in Mando’a too, maybe that was on purpose?

“Any other questions?” Kal asks, taking back your attention from the ARC.

You gather yourself, squaring your shoulders back.

“When do we start?”

>Fighting against your own weapon.
>Stalking and evasion.

The silence in the halls is an odd comparison to the battle filling them just days before. You had spent three cycles in the cell after the conversation with Kal Skirata and the Null ARC. The time had been filled largely with visits from medical droids, the occasional questioning by Kaminoans, and passing the time with 2337 in conversation in between. You had taken turns filling each other in with details. Through Skirata, you had found out that the rest of your brothers were recovering. Then you heard the both of you were being released, a mixture of pressure from the Jedi, probably Trebor, and the unstable political climate sparing you from rapid reprocessing. It was clearly time to recover and regroup.

Now, however, you were on your own and hunting.

The mission A’den had given you had seemed straightforward enough. After a full week of various instructions and demonstrations on the training field the ARC had seen fit to give you practice examination, one that would test some of the more critical skills he was supposed to be imparting. The target was technically a mid-level administrator for Tipoca city, although after the casualties and losses from the battle they were filling in for much bigger shoes. They seemed unremarkable for the most part, but A’den had challenged you to follow them, watch them, and find something remarkable about them.

It had so far been quite different than most of your other missions. Even the raid to capture Poggle hadn’t been particularly quiet. This was more like when you were sneaking around to scout out Sergeant Vrul and his labyrinth training field, dodging between rooms and keeping yourself unnoticed. Although the destruction had opened up many new paths and places to hide in the rubble, the amount of maintenance droids and workers cleaning up everywhere meant that eyes were almost always around. You had discovered most of the maintenance tunnels were buzzing with the same amount of activity as the major hallways. Worse, the amount of Clones patrolling the cloning facility and the city now was a new challenge. It was to help allay concerns among the populace and remind them that they were now protected by the Republic, but it was mostly just making you lose your target.

He had departed his office, a nondescript bureaucratic box that consisted of a computer stations where he worked feverishly for most of the day. Your first thought had been to follow him from afar, but the number of bodies walking along his prospective path meant you were likely to be noticed and picked out. You hit the holoprojector on your wrist and scan over the map you had prepared, marking out a few key places where he was likely heading. You’d be able to pick back up on him in a couple spots...

Although the atrium likely would have provided clear views for much of the target’s probable route, you opt instead to keep a bit more discreet. A high view point would certainly mean being visible if anyone had an angle and cared to look. Although the major walkways and maintenance tunnels were still busy, there were more than enough paths to get to the service shaft without running into too many crowds or security patrols.

You close the map after memorizing the path ahead, setting out immediately in a low crouch that keeps you out of view. A’den had practically had to beat the form into you, your back still complaining about the awkward orientation, but it was proving effective enough that you forced yourself to keep at it. More than once you had slipped by a security patrol’s sight by keeping down below their eye level as they walked just inches away from you. The standard Clone’s helmet had a distinct deficiency for views that were almost directly below them, you had discovered, usually meaning that you all had to crane your necks awkwardly to see there. In practice, however, most of you never did. Most troopers, including you, had simply trained or fallen into the routine of just turning your head slightly and scanning, hopefully, frequently enough to prevent anything getting under your view.

A deficiency in technology and equipment had turned into an exploitable practice used by practically every Clone like you. It was such a small thing that you had never even thought about it or realized it. You had simply adapted to your armor, having been raised in it you had accepted its capabilities without ever really pointing out the problems with it. Perhaps you thought it was just how things were or perhaps you had never even considered that kind of feedback was wanted. That you had figured it out at all was because of your new helmet, the gift from Kal, which had a visor that offered better views at down close and out wide angles. You were willing to wager the Skirata had noted the deficiency and had made these, likely for his sons or other Clones that he trained and worked with. That you had one now was certainly going to be an advantage going forward, but you couldn’t help but wonder if all the other Clones could benefit too. For now, you were happy they didn’t.

The area around the service shaft entrance is practically deserted. With a quick strike of the security code into the access panel, you’re able to open the hatch. The shaft runs far above and deep below, a lonely ladder that juts out into the open turbo lift path. You glance up, toward the top and see little sign of activity. Beneath you, however, the turbolift is rising.

You step back, double checking that all the equipment on your belt is secure, before glancing into the void again and checking your timing. With the lift rising at a steady rate, you quickly estimate how long you have. Counting down from your guess you reach zero and step forward, launching yourself through the service hatch and out into the nothingness above the rising transport. There’s a moment of weightlessness, followed by the sensation of falling. You’ve mistimed your jump sli-

*THUMP*

Your velocity added to the lift's makes for a painful landing. You regret the mistake for the pain it’s caused you, but more importantly you regret the rocking the lift surely experienced as the repulsors compensated your sudden impact. Had you landed more gently, it likely wouldn’t have been very noticable. As you had not it was now possible someone inside had heard or felt the disturbance.

Wasting no time, you pluck a small pad from your belt and hurry over to the electronic circuit controlling the turbolift. You string out a long wire from the security tool and clip in onto the exposed circuit running separate from the active control and power system. A few days ago, even the security code to get in the shaft would have been unknowable to you, but A’den had been meticulous in showing you many of the tricks he and his brothers had discovered over the years. Slicing a security camera feed was something you had ever thought yourself particularly capable of, but with the right tools and a little understanding of labeling and common Kaminoan organizing, the task was very simple.

Rewarding your efforts, a vid of the interior of the lift appears on the tool’s screen a few seconds later. To your immediate relief, the turbolift seems to be empty. It was likely that it was being summoned to a floor rather than ridden, which spared your hard flop on the top from giving away your position. You had been lucky, you think to yourself, but even A’den had acknowledged that luck was an important tool sometimes. You monitor the screen carefully as the lift comes to a halt and starts taking on passengers, your quarry isn’t among them so you settle in to watching the traffic pass by on the screen.

A few trips up and down later, there’s still been no sign of the target Kaminoan. Various other laborers and workers in the city, along with droids and Clones, had entered and exited on a dozen different floors in the meanwhile. You’re persistent however, forcing yourself to be patient as you wait. It’s finally rewarded when the target steps on to the lift. He seems to be alone, with the doors closing, until at the last second you see him hit the button that reopens them.

You tilt your head slightly when you spot a figure joining him in the lift…

>A familiar Jedi…

As the door shuts and the turbolift starts to rise, your left staring at the Kaminoan and the Jedi that’s joined them. Owing to the fact that the being entering the lift wasn’t a Kaminoan or a Clone there was a likelihood, you think to yourself, that any observer would have guessed that they were a Jedi. Even if they hadn’t, the lightsaber on their side would have been the screaming signal needed for them to make the guess. Yet even if they hadn’t had the all too obvious symbol of a Jedi, you would have been able to know that was exactly what they were.

This is a Jedi you’ve met before.

There’s a certain amount of amusement that fills your head, the likelihood of running into a Jedi that your brothers and you had been in the same fight with was surely small. Yet, here they were, in the same turbolift as your current target you were trailing. Maybe the galaxy had a sense of humor or fate, or maybe it just wasn’t as large as it was supposed to be, you think to yourself. The Jedi and the target aren’t interacting with each other. In fact, the Kaminoan has moved slightly to the side to give the Jedi a wide berth. A cautious bunch, they were. In any case, you’re left wondering how much this is going to affect your mission. A brief sense of worry crosses your mind, you know what the Jedi are capable of…

Right on cue, the Jedi seems to to move slightly, just enough to be perceptible. The look on their face unfortunately isn’t just curiosity, but suspicion. They’ve sensed you, you think, heart dropping instantly. They turn their head a bit more. You watch them first look up toward the ceiling, to the spot that you reckon you’re currently standing on. Next they look slightly to the security camera, just enough to make you think they’ve figured out exactly where you are and what you're doing. The Kaminoan, for their part, seems completely oblivious to anything. The Jedi goes back to looking ahead at the door and you’re left wondering again how this would affect things. No words are shared between them, at any rate.

The lift comes to a stop, about a dozen floors short of where the Kaminoan’s quarters are located. You think that this could be the Jedi’s stop but, to your surprise, it’s the target that exits the lift. The Jedi is staying put, you realize, not exiting. You’re struck at once that the target would get off here, but you’re hesitant to pursue with the Jedi potentially cued into you. It might be wise to throw them off your trail, but that might just make them more determined to follow. Another option might be to let them know you know, that would certainly surprise them and potentially show them you mean no harm...

If the Jedi is suspicious, there was likely no changing that now you decide. Instead you would have to make sure they didn’t suspect the Kaminoan was your target. There would certainly be options, you considered, on how best to get back to the mission. Perhaps you could simply tell them it’s a training mission, it would be truthful enough you think, but deep down you were certain A’den wouldn’t tolerate that sort of behavior. Training in the same manner in which you fought was the entire core of your life, the way that Wrax had taught you. If you were going to be doing dangerous missions against lightsaber and Force users, it was best to figure out how to do it now.

You allow the turbolift doors to shut and begin to rise again, climbing up higher into the dome of the city. Watching the Jedi carefully, you notice them remaining completely calm and poised. They knew you were watching, they knew you were likely waiting for them, but the question remained on what they would do about it. A part of you wondered if they might cut their way through the roof of the elevator, that would certainly be the direct way to get to you. Maybe they intended to see if you were after them. Indeed, following them a bit further would certainly give that impression. If your roles were reversed, and you knew that you were being followed, you would likely try to turn the tables rather than just escape. In such a way, the line between prey and predator was suddenly quite blurred.

Yet, the Jedi wasn’t supposed to be either of those things. They were simply in between you and your real target. If they suspected you of something nefarious, they would certainly be after you in short order…

A thought strikes you. You pull out a second cord from your security tool and attach it to the control mechanisms. With a few commands, you could do a number of things that would make their pursuit of you much more difficult. You could randomize the floor layout to the controls, effectively programming the turbolift to prevent going to the floor where the Kaminoan was. Alternatively, you could just disable it once you had gotten back to him. That would force the Jedi to find another lift, giving you valuable time as well.

As the lift reaches its next stop, you watch as the Jedi simply steps out as if nothing was wrong. You had to act quickly, you enter the command for the floor the Kaminoan had left on and then…

>Get ready to disable it entirely.

>Randomize the floor sequence.

It was just a bit too clever an idea for you to pass up, the opportunity to get a bit creative was certainly going to be helpful against a potential Jedi threat. If there had been anything you learned about Force and lightsaber users, it was that they couldn’t be given a fair fight. Their advantages would always come into play one way or another, you knew, and doing something to set them off balance would be useful. Simply stopping the turbolift would be far too obvious, they would probably just do something drastic like jump down. That much wouldn’t surprise you even after seeing just some of their physical abilities.

You get to inputting commands, opening the interface for the turbolift’s controls and enter in the floor number the Kaminoan had left on. As soon as you’re moving again, you begin trying to reprogram the control sequence for the floor calling function. In terms of slicing, it was essentially beginner’s work. Each destination floor was associated with a value. By changing the values around, you would make any command given by the rider of the turbolift provide a wrong call value. This, therefore, would mean they would go to an incorrect floor. Further, randomizing the numbers would mean that anyone using it would have to figure out the correct button-

The turbolift comes to a stop and you realize you’ve already arrived at your destination floor. Changing the codes may have been a good idea, but you realize you were taking far too long to do it! Hurrying as quickly as you can, you throw in some numbers haphazardly and disconnect the security tool from the vid feed and control circuit. You already feel the turbolift being called, when you’re suddenly shook by the lift moving up. Wasting no more time, you jump over to the maintenance ladder and let the turbolift rise away from you, hopefully not to come back here for a while at least. You climb down to the target floor access hatch and carefully open it, checking for any potential disturbances or witnesses.

To your surprise, the entire level seems almost deserted. Shutting the door behind you, you’re almost entirely certain that there’s no sign of anyone, including your target. Fortunately, this level seems to have only one way to go. You start your way down the passageway, keeping low and quiet in case the target is somewhere ahead. With a Jedi potentially on your tail, you had to be quick, but you also couldn’t risk blowing the mission. The Kaminoan couldn’t have gotten too far ahead…

Confident that you’ve bought yourself enough time to do things right, you proceed to check each room and potential path for the target as you try to pick his trail back up. Using your security tool to check whether any doors had been accessed recently and your new helmet’s thermal vision to look for signs of biological activity, you cross out rooms one by one. It’s more than a bit surprising that none of the rooms seem to have been used for quite some time. For weeks, even months in the case of some, they had all been left largely untouched as far as you can see. To the Kaminoans, who treated space like a valuable commodity, it was quite a curiosity.

It made sense in a way, that there was no one on this floor at least. If none of the rooms hadn’t been used lately, there would of course be no reason for the Kaminoans to ever come here. Why your target had come here was then all the more intriguing. Maybe A’den had you tracking the target here for a reason? Even though you had only known him for a handful of days, it was clearly something he or Kal might do to get the most benefit from you. It made you proud, you think, that they might trust you already for something sensitive. It, of course, could have been that they already knew all of his secrets, but that they were willing to risk you blowing their cover surely meant they believed in your skills. Then again, you can’t help but think, it could just as well be a sign that he’s nothing special.

Realizing that the back and forth in your own head isn’t useful to the current situation, you press the thoughts to the back of your head and focus on the access panel to yet one more door in the long hall. This one too registered that it hadn’t been opened for months. However, you’re struck at once at a rather minor detail. There appears to be a small print on the otherwise spotless door. So far, almost all the doors had been largely immaculate. Their lack of use for all this time had certainly not prevented maintenance droids from cleaning them and keeping them dust free. So it was that even a small mark, likely from an incidental touch of a hand, could draw so much of your attention.

Hoping for a bit of luck, you switch to your thermal. There’s no residual heat on the door so you can’t be sure anyone has used it lately, you think, but the fact there was a mark that hadn’t been cleaned could be strange enough to warrant going inside.

Your interest is too much to hold back. Although you’re certain the target isn’t inside, the oddity was enough to justify a few moments of your time at least. It’s when the open command doesn’t work that you become very curious. It wasn’t that the door was locked, you think, but rather that the entire command had been disbaled. By the looks of things the door has been specifically tampered with to prevent access from anything that wasn’t using a security tunneler or other slicing equipment. Luckily, you were prepared.

Breaking the protection on the door isn’t exactly simple though. Changing a few lines of computer code or switching values was one thing, but having to create an access command was a bit more that you were capable of doing on the fly or without a reference handy. You’re not entirely certain you’ll be able to do it at all, at best it would take you a fair deal of time. Thinking back to the turbolift controls, you could just imagine spending too much time losing your target completely. Deciding to get a bit creative, you instead access the door’s emergency routines. You’re immediately rewarded by finding the underlying security measure to force open the door is intact. Perhaps conveniently, the reporting function, the signal that would go to central Kaminoan security, is already turned off.

As you order the door to open, the thought crosses your mind that someone or something could certainly be inside. They could even be armed. You had your beskad, of course, but it wasn’t even in your hand. You feel like cursing yourself for a moment, this was more than a bit sloppy of you. Luckily, the room indeed turns out to be unoccupied as you suspected. However, you’re immediately able to tell that it’s been used much more recently.

It looks to be an apartment, decorated and lived in with numerous possessions and other signs of life scattered about the room. You take a step inside and command the door shut behind you. Unlike the rooms you had cleared when the Battle for Kamino began, this one is rather opulent by comparison. Decorations both bizarre and ornate are immediately noticeable. Even the colors of the room are worthy of note. The Kaminoans generally decorate in whites and greys, their eyes seeing on a frequency different than human ones. This room is, by perhaps any species’ standard, quite loud. Reds, yellows, greens and more flood your visor’s color spectrum in a visual assault as jarring as any you’ve ever seen.

It couldn’t be a coincidence the Kaminoan had come to this floor, you decide. This had to be connected.

For the most part, the objects filling the room are rather mismatched and impersonal. As you look closer at the various items it begins to feel more and more you’re looking less at a living room and more of a storage room. The clear indication is when you walk further into the apartment and see large containers stacked against the rearmost wall and filling what was almost certainly supposed to be a bedroom. Someone was clearly using this place to hold many items, some for a long period of time.

Opening one of the larger containers, you find neatly folded stacks of Kaminoan clothes. By the look of them, they’re a rather far cry from the usual science and administrator uniforms you are used to seeing. Another container is filled to the brim with a mixture of utensils, dining ware, and other ostensibly cooking and food related instruments, though they’re unlike anything you’ve ever used personally. A third of the large boxes is much less organized. In fact, it’s by far the least well ordered, which is strange in its own right. Sitting near the open area in the room, it has a strange combination of blankets, small pillows, and even some kind of soft model of a large flying beast.

You take a step back from them all, more confused than anything. What would anyone gain, you think to yourself, by going through so much trouble to store… clothes, junk, and household items? Taking a seat on one of the unopened containers, you ponder a bit deeper what the potential implications could be. Was this really just a storage area for some Kaminoan with far more things then they had room for? You suppose that it could be stolen property, that would explain the strange security precautions on the door and perhaps even why droids weren’t cleaning it. It still confuses you why anyone would even bother for rather mundane, albeit fancy and garish looking items.

The thought strikes you that this could have been for nothing. Perhaps you really had broken into a storage locker. That it was notably suspicious could be a separate matter altogether. It’s about then that you notice how long you’ve been thinking about this.

The door to the room opens.

Standing there, with one hand raised forcing the door to the side and their other on their lightsaber, the Jedi from the elevator steps into the room with a serious look on their face.

“Just what is going on, Trooper…”

>Aayala Secura says, keeping her eyes on you suspiciously.

You fight your instinct to jump into a combat stance, instead raising your hands and showing her that you’re unarmed. As she lowers her hand you see a flash of recognition across her face.

“I know you,” she says steadily, “CT-0027. From Geonosis.”

“Yes, General,” you reply, slightly amazed she remembered, “The LAAT crew. You look well.”

She nods her head slowly. Her stance changes slightly to a more relaxed one, but you can tell she’s still keeping aware of any threat from you. Her battle on Geonosis had ended with her unconscious and dying in the crew compartment of your gunship. It hadn’t been so long ago, but with everything that had happened it certainly felt longer.

“My injuries were well cared for,” she responds, “Master Trebor spoke to me, he told me about the escape. I owe you all my thanks. Him for pulling me out. You for flying. The medic for keeping me alive…”

“My brother,” you say, “2337.”

She nods again, her look now changing to a more inquisitive one. You can tell that she’s a bit conflicted on how to proceed.

“Why are you stalking people in elevators and…” she pauses, looking around slowly, “Going through someone’s clothes?”

You sigh, dropping your hands to your lap.

“I’m not entirely certain, Sir,” you start to explain, “About the last part at least. I’m supposed to be trailing a target for a mission-”

“A target,” she interrupts, “The Kaminoan?”

“Yes, General,” you reply in the affirmative. It seemed like you would have to explain a great deal, "I apologize for the turbolift, I thought it would buy me a little more time to complete my mission."

"It would have worked," she allows a small smile, "If I wasn't a Jedi."

You're about to ask what she means, you had been particularly proud of that idea. Instead, her smile fades and her serious visage returns.

“What is your mission? Why them?” she demands.

You consider how much explaining things to her would help or not. It would be a bit clumsy to talk about everything that had happened since Kal Skirata had pulled you from your cell. Certainly telling her this was training was truthful enough, but you can’t shake the feeling that A’den chose this Kaminoan for a reason. That there’s something important you’re supposed to find out....

>Explain that it’s part of your training with an ARC, it’s purely an exercise.

>Mention the briefest summary possible, as your mission requires operational security. The Kaminoan is a possible Person of Interest, and you were selected to confirm or deny certain suspicions.

As you try to give a succinct report, while keeping some of the more questionable details out of sight, you can tell that the Jedi doesn’t seem to particularly follow everything.

“Who gave you this mission?” she asks curiously, “It certainly wasn’t a Jedi.”

While you’re a bit uncertain why she says that so surely, you had to wonder how much the Jedi were involved in such things themselves. They were certainly given wide authority of the army and all Clones, but how much did they do when it came to intelligence and espionage? Briefly, you debate with yourself how much mentioning A’den or Kal Skirata might complicate things. While A’den was an ARC, you knew he and his brothers were something of a curiosity in the ranks yet. Kal Skirata had only just been officially granted a position in the Grand Army as well, though who he reported to was also somewhat questionable.

“I received the order from my Sergeant,” you answer, technically truthfully, “I’m not given much reasoning behind everything he tells me to do. I was told to follow the Kaminoan and observe, I’m here to perform my orders as best I can.”

“And that involves their clothes… how?”

Admittedly you had made it all sound a bit more serious than it was likely to be, but there was no sense in making it complicated.

“These containers have been here for some time,” you explain, “Someone has gone through the trouble of disabling the door and perhaps even preventing cleaning and maintenance droids from accessing it.”

“Which means,” she says, turning slightly back to the door, “You had to break in.”

“...yes, General,” you’re forced to admit.

“In the Republic,” her words suddenly brimming with more authority, “Such actions require a warrant or higher authority to do such a thing.”

Resistant to the implication, you can’t help but fire back.

“This isn’t the Republic, General, and this could mean important information for the war.”

“Kamino may not be in the Republic,” comes the Jedi's reply, her voice keeping level, “But they likely have their own rules. Even so, you are a part of the Republic. As a soldier, you should represent its ideals-- you’re defending them, after all.”

You’re conflicted on how to answer. It seems like you may have gone a bit too far in chasing a suspicion. Personal property was something you didn't have a large amount of experience on. Still, you can’t help but feel that there’s something much larger going on.

>Apologize to General Secura, but ask that you be allowed to continue your observation.

“My apologies, General,” you say regretfully, “After everything that’s happened, it’s easy to think everywhere is a battlefield.”

“I understand that, 0027,” Secura nods, “You’ve already done much for the Republic, I believe that you only meant to help.”

“With your permission,” you ask directly, “I would like to continue my mission. I’ve spent far too much time here and I may have lost my target.”

She pauses for a few moments, considering the rest of the room.

“Permission granted,” she says, somewhat surprisingly.

“But first,” she stipulates, “You will help me put your mess back into place.”

You frown behind your helmet. You weren’t exactly in a position to refuse, however, and you’re forced to quickly start returning the contents to their containers. True to her word, General Secura helps you, but you notice that she’s observing some of the items with more than a little interest.

“Noticing anything, General?” you ask patiently, hoping to prompt the Jedi into saying something helpful.

“These clothes,” she says slowly, “They’re quite distinctive. None of the Kaminoans I’ve met have been wearing anything like them. They also seem... different somehow. Nonsymmetric.”

“None that I’ve ever seen either,” you agree, “And I can’t imagine a Kaminoan wearing anything that wasn’t “perfect” in their eyes. All the more strange that they’re locked up in a room with its security measures overridden.”

“Is this…” she starts to ask, “A toy?”

You’re uncertain what she means.

“General?”

“It’s a stuffed beast,” she explains, holding up the miniature creature, “A play thing for a child.”

Whatever she means, it’s obvious that it has some extra curiosity to her.

“The children here do not seem particularly…” she trails off for a moment, “The only ones that I’ve seen spend all their time studying or learning their future careers.”

Having never even seen a Kaminoan child until recently, you don’t have much context to say otherwise or confirm. Instead, you opt for a more leading question.

“Not unlike I did. It seems special…” you say, helpfully.

“Perhaps,” Secura thinks deeply, looking around the room, “Everything here could be special too.”

Setting the stuffed animal down, she walks over to some of the other decorations. You make a show of continuing to put things away, but you’re focused on what she’s checking. The Twi’lek picks up a small, bright blue figurine of some indiscriminate shape.

“This is someone’s art,” she says at last, “All of this is handmade.”

>”A Kaminoan artist?” you say incredulously, “I’m fairly certain they only breed scientists and laborers.”

>”A Kaminoan artist?” you say incredulously, “I’m fairly certain they only breed scientists and laborers.”

“They are certainly a utilitarian species,” Aayala Secura admits, “But there’s no doubting that this defies their usual… aesthetic.”

You suppose she would be in the better position to know. Your entire life had been spent seeing the Kaminoans as largely emotionless. That lack of emotion certainly extended to almost everything in their society, from the way they dressed to how they built and decorated or, rather, not decorated. Had Sergeant Wrax not taught you all he had of the Mandalorian way of life, living and dying, you suspect you would think the Kaminoan aesthetic was all there was. You’re suddenly feeling somewhat sorry for all the Clones who hadn’t had someone like that to learn from. Geonosis could have been their first taste of some other culture and that was obviously not a culture any of you could care for.

“Supposing that’s so, General,” you reply, “Wouldn’t an artist… share what they made?”

She looks somewhat surprised when you make the suggestion.

“That is normal, yes. At least, for many species,” she explains, “But I’ve sensed the Kaminoans put great weight on holding back their emotions from outsiders. Especially between each other. It may be that these were never meant to be seen, a sorrowful fate.”

Setting the figurine back down where it was, she returns to helping you put things back how they were. You contemplate a bit on the situation as you stack the containers up against the wall. It was difficult for you to see the sorrow in it. At least it existed, that certainly meant whoever made it had a chance to create their things. For you, who had been raised without anything besides your kit, it would have been a strange thing to feel remorse over something like no one ever seeing your blaster. The beskad on your hip was slightly different, you admitted to yourself, you felt a small feeling of pride every time someone told you what a fine weapon it was. Still, was that any different than when Wrax had approved of how clean you kept your weapons? Perhaps because the beskad was something you had achieved, rather than simply been issued, is what made it special? Although, you certainly found yourself liking the look of the mythosaur on it more and more.

As you at last finish cleaning up your search, you’re reminded yet again on how much time you’ve lost.

“General, the room is restored,” you sound off, “Permission to return to my mission.”

“Granted,” she tells you again, but this time with an addition rather than a condition, “Lead on.”

The likelihood of you saying no and having any sway with the Jedi was unlikely, you knew, the question was how you would best proceed?

>Go back to the mission as if she wasn’t there, it’s your skills being tested…

The General said lead and lead you would, you decide quickly. Although the thought strikes you that she might be able to simply lead you to the target through her powers, you’re not willing to give up on your own skills yet. A’den had given this training mission to you and you intended to see it through. There was certainly an argument for using every advantage you could, but there was a better one for practicing your skills now before you would need them elsewhere.

As the two of you exit the room full of colorful furniture, trinkets, and more, you quickly scan for any new traffic. Finding none, it’s a simple matter of shutting the door behind you and reengaging its security measures with your security tool. Whoever had disabled its memory and security functions would not be able to know when the room was accessed, although you imagine you hadn’t folded the clothes nearly neat enough to fool anyone as thorough as a Kaminoan.

General Secura waits quietly while you finish with the door and she forms up behind you as you begin your sweep down the hall again. You’re half curious if the turbolift had been noticed by anyone else yet, but that was almost guaranteed given how busy the city had been. The thought reminds you of another curiosity.

“Pardon, General,” you ask quietly, both of you creeping down the long hall, “How were you able to get back to this floor so fast?”

“The Force guided me,” she says somewhat mysteriously.

“I had randomized the floors,” you say with some disbelief, “Did the Force tell you which button to push?”

“When it took me the wrong direction,” comes her explanation, “I just decided to Jump down instead.”

The Twi’lek shrugs with only a hint of amusement when you look back to try to read how serious she was. You had been clever enough to at least slow her down, but definitely not stop her. Whether physical or mental there were few rules that could stop the Jedi. You probably would have needed to be willing to harm them, you think briefly, but that was hardly something you could justify for just your own training.

There’s noise coming from up ahead, you realize.

Farther down the hall, the sound of a door sliding open is unmistakable on the otherwise silent floor. You signal back to Secura quickly and you both take cover in doorways opposite to each other. Risking a quick glance, you see your target striding into the hallway from a room four doorways down. You give a hand signal to the General, motioning for her to sit tight and close to the side the Kaminoan is coming from. He passes by the both of you, oblivious, and you give it a few seconds to make sure he’s well clear before moving out…

>Heading over to check out the room he just left.

You’re hesitant to let the Kaminoan slip from your sight again, but the opportunity to figure out what exactly he’s doing on this floor is too much for you to pass up. Besides, you think to yourself, if your turbolift upgrade was still functioning that would probably delay him from reaching his destination at least for a time. As you check the door’s security, you’re not surprised to see the same safeguards as the room you were just inside. There was, however, one minor detail that could complicate things.

“You have a short memory, 0027,” General Secura says rather unimpressed from behind you.

“Apologies, General,” you say hastily, “But this confirms he’s responsible for the other room as well. It has the same overrides in place and was able to do it without slicing in. That must mean he has some kind of controller to grant him access. It might be the same for all the other rooms on this floor…”

You trail off, considering the scale of what you may have found. How one middling bureaucrat had been able to pull this off you’re not certain. It was just unfortunate you probably weren’t going to be able to see inside at the moment. Still, you could always report this finding to A’den or just check back later when the General wasn’t watching. It would technically be against orders, but you had no doubt now that there truly was something going on that deserved investigation. You start disconnecting your security device.

“If we hurry, we can still catch up to him I think,” you start to explain, “I can reprogram the lift if the Kaminoans haven’t noticed and then we can-”

“0027,” Aayla Secura says again.

For a moment you wonder if she’s going to scold you again. However, there’s a change in her voice that catches you off guard. Instead of being angry, she sounds more worried. Looking back, you’re surprised to see her standing with her hand outstretched toward the door and her eyes closed tightly.

“What is it, General?”

“Get this door open,” she says, opening her eyes. The look she has seems quite concerned indeed. Whatever had made her change her mind so fast must be quite important, though you haven’t the faintest idea what it might be.

“Yes, Sir!” you reply, reattaching your security device and applying the security override. It’s about when the door starts to open that you remember that you’ve left yourself completely exposed again. A mistake, you think, though if there was anything dangerous inside, you would hope that the General would have informed you. Rather than anything dangerous, however, you’re faced by something much more surprising.

A young Kaminoan, with wide, vibrant green eyes stares directly at you.

>Hold a hand up and try to keep the Kaminoan from running or calling for help.

You’re more than a little torn. Your training instincts are screaming for you to follow your checklist of breach and clear procedure. Just like when 7651 had broken into rooms during the opening of your push into the city, your first thought is to check for additional enemies that may be further in or hiding to ambush you. But now, however, you’re very aware that this isn’t a battlefield and you weren’t facing droids.

The Kaminoan looks more confused than frightened for the moment, but you had to think that would only be a temporary state. She’s clearly young, slightly smaller than full grown and obviously not an adult. They seem to be holding some sort of tool, a driver by the look of it, in their right hand. It’s not particularly a threat to you, but it’s enough of a sign that you may need to take action to prevent anything rash. They’re standing in front of a small table, bright red and oddly proportioned, much like the furniture in the other room. This room however, seems to be much more plain in the Kaminoan style. There weren’t many places for them to retreat to. Holding up your free hand, you attempt to show them you’re not a threat.

“Halt!” you say bluntly, not really knowing a better word for the moment.

She reacts slowly, clearly trying to process what’s happening. The tool falls from their open hand and onto the floor as they take a defensive step backward. Your command has clearly had the opposite effect than intended, you think to yourself, though you’re uncertain how you could have been more clear. It’s when they appear to be ready to turn and run that you mean to call out again, but General Secura preempts you. Smoothly turning your shoulder slightly, the Jedi simply walks past you. The Kaminoan’s green eyes shift from you to the Twi’lek and you see her expression change in an instant to amazement.

Secura raises her own hand and holds it out to them, the Kaminoan seeming to forget any fear in a moment. In fact, you watch as she actually takes a pair of steps forward to her, voluntarily closing the distance. She reaches out with her own hand and touches Secura’s palm.

“Your color is amazing,” the Kaminoan says, with almost no sign of stress or concern in their voice.

The General seems calm, but focused.

“I am Aayala,” she introduces herself, “What is your name?”

“My father named me Nel,” the young girl replies in awe, before seeming to remember your presence. She looks your way again, a trace of fear showing on her face.

>You introduce yourself, trying to be a little more friendly.
>You let the Jedi handle this, focusing on making sure there’s no one other threat instead.

Uncertain of how much good you would actually do, you hold back from saying anything else that might worry the Kaminoan. General Secura seems to have the situation well in hand for the moment anyway, the Jedi easily gets the young girl’s attention again by simplest of requests.

“Tell me about this table,” Secura says, motioning to the red piece in the center of the room, “Did you make it?”

The Kaminoan nods excitedly, before launching into a very detailed discussion on how she designed and crafted it.

“It is my 34th table,” she explains, “I’ve adapted the design to be slightly more stable when loaded at the center, the previous version was wobbly and needed to be loaded closer to the front legs…”

It’s a rather Kaminoan explanation, you can’t help but think. As she goes deeper and deeper into various features and design decisions, you’re surprised by just how much information Nel can fit into such a short time. It sounded very much like she had put considerable thought into every aspect. You can tell that General Secura is taken somewhat aback by the verbal engineering onslaught, but she holds her expression to one of interest and patience, at least as far as you can tell. To you, this was simply how the Kaminoans thought about everything they made, including the Clones. Even if they only saw you as tools or commodities, they certainly took fierce pride in the work they had put into their creations.

With the Jedi thoroughly engaged with her, you decide to escape the lengthy explanation to observe the rest of the room more closely and ensure that there were no more surprises in waiting. Taking a few cautious steps into the room, you scan for a full picture. As your first glance had shown, it’s much more empty than the other room had been. In fact, its entire contents seemed to be located in the room you were all now inside. There’s a small pile of tools near where the Kaminoan had obviously been working, a rather simple looking bed, and a stock of food and cooking instruments. They are very similar to the ones you had seen earlier, obviously of the same maker.

Despite how clean it seems at first, you notice a few tell tale signs of previous occupation as your visor display goes to work. Indentations and scratches in the floor where larger furniture used to be, slightly different reflectivity on the walls indicating areas that were covered for a long time, and most obviously a pair of traditional kaminoan seats stacked upon each other near the door, as if meant to be taken away. There’s a few small trinkets in a box not far away from you, but it seems like it was in the process of being unpacked. There appears to be a holo picture laying on top.

>Check the contents, activate the holo picture.
>Interrupt them. Ask Nel how long she has been here.

>Check the contents, activate the holo picture.

Taking the holo pic into your hand without either of them seeing, you turn slightly to keep the projector light hidden. You activate the device and a pair of figures appear in front of you, one of them a very young Kaminoan and the other a very familiar adult. It’s clearly your target by the look of him. The look on his face is somewhat uneasy, while the child looks quite happy. It’s not hard to guess that it’s Nel with him. You wonder for a moment if you should take the holo picture with you, it would make for good evidence afterall. The thought strikes you that it may be crossing the line again, however, as you had only been ordered to find something out, not to steal something.

You place the holopicture back down and start looking through the rest of the items in the box. They seem to be somewhat more personal than the rest of the objects in the other room. There’s a grey figure, shaped rather too similarly to a Kaminoan to be a coincidence. It’s rather featureless, besides a pair of green orbs placed into shallow sockets to make eyes. Maybe it was a model of herself? Another somewhat curious piece is just beside it, for a moment you have a hard time guessing what it is when it strikes you that it doesn’t belong here at all. Putting the object in your palm you roll the small, barbed and sharpened metal object carefully.

It’s a weapon.

At a glance it resembles some kind diabolical spear or arrow head, three jutting blades as sharp as scalpels jutting outward from a central, piercing head. As you look at it closer, however, you see that there’s no obvious way to attach it to anything else. The back of the object is pointed and not hollow for any king of shaft to connect to. With a very cautious tough, you inspect the razor fins and realize that they seem to be on a spring connection, almost as though it had been shot out of flechette, the blades becoming the stabilizing force for its deadly journey.

That it was deadly was undoubtable. As your visor zooms in on the head of the contraption, you see that it too is not entirely solid. There’s some kind of orifice on the very end. Your medical training tells you immediately it’s some kind of injector, but it’s impossible to tell if it’s full or not--

“0027,” General Secura says rather loudly.

You instantly react and close your first, but a split second before you tighten it into a ball you catch yourself. Opening it slightly, you see that one of the blades has actually bitten into your glove, but you hadn’t felt an ounce of pressure. There’s no time to check if you’re bleeding though...

“Yes, General?” you ask, turning your helmet to her delayed, but quickly.

“What are you looking at?” she asks inquisitively. The young Kaminoan also appears to be curious. You look back down, staring back at the items and forcing yourself to speak entirely from the moment.

“There is a doll here,” you explain, “With green eyes just like hers.”

Nel blinks, before smiling warmly.

“She’s just like me,” comes her reply.

“I’ve never seen a green-eyed Kaminoan before,” Secura says with some perspective, “You both must be special.”

It occurs to you that you’ve never seen a green eyed Kaminoan either. Every scientist, tech, administrator, or otherwise had always seemed to have black or blue or even yellow pupils. From the ones who had watched over all your training to the very target you were tracking, or had been tracking, none of them had a color remotely like hers.

“We are deviations,” Nel replies instantly, “It is a defect.”

While the words are delivered with all the surety and matter-of-factness that you’ve grown used to from Kaminoans, it’s the words that strike you cold. Kaminoans treated defects like you were trained to treat enemies: destroying them swiftly and efficiently.

“Your eye color is beautiful,” the General tries to assure her, “It’s not a defect or something to be ashamed of.”

“I am not ashamed,” the young Kaminoan counters, “They do not function correctly.”

“What do you mean?” the Twi’lek asks, her head tendrils seeming to tense slightly, “You can see us can’t you?”

Nel nods her head slowly, but looks around the room for a moment, her head rolling as she searches for a few words. There’s a hint of disappointment in her expression.

“I do not see like the others,” Nel tries to explain, “It is not correct.”

You’re not exactly following what’s being said, but the paradox is instantly clear. How could an imperfect Kaminoan exist? From everything you had seen the Kaminoans didn’t have defects, besides their lack of flexibility sometimes. There were no Kaminoans who were short, fat, crippled, misshapen or otherwise. That one could be here with something as bad as to be called a defect by them was simply not possible in your mind.

“Who told you this?” Secura probes, looking seriously at the girl.

“My father explained it. It is a defect,” Nel replies, “I stay here so I am not reconditioned.”

That word. She was being hidden here to avoid being killed, you realized. General Secura simply looks confused, not understanding the Kaminoan parlance, but to you it’s suddenly as clear and bright as operating room light. You’re not sure which is more amazing, that Nel was being hidden here or that her father had even bothered to stop it all. Was it really possible your target had felt something approaching sympathy or care for his daughter, even with her supposed defect? The idea struck you as almost laughable.

“Whatever he said,” General Secura tries to reassure her, “You are not defective. It’s cruel of him to say so.”

Yet, for even her reassuring tone, Nel seems completely unmoved either way. The Kaminoan simply stares as if Secura had started speaking some unintelligible language. You hold back from offering any explanation or asking your own questions. Whatever reason your target had for hiding Nel here, it was certainly a massive breach of Kaminoan protocols. That he had apparently secured multiple rooms for hiding her and her… art, was just as suspect if not more strange. Maybe he was even responsible for the low traffic to this floor? Could he really have managed such a thing? Why would he even do it, you can't help but keep wondering.

You remind yourself there’s a terribly sharp, dangerous item in your palm again before you unintentionally squeeze it into your hand. You were thinking much too hard about this, when your next step was already clear, you needed to report to A’den. As far as you’re concerned, you had not only found something interesting, but something completely unexpected and, perhaps, unprecedented. Keeping the arrow head in your hand, you rise to stand fully.

“General, we should get moving. I need to get back to completing my mission and there’s no telling if he or anyone else may be coming here.”

Secura’s face says she wants to ask you something, but the Jedi doesn’t speak a word to you.

“It was nice to meet you, Nel,” she kneels down slightly, putting her eyes on the young Kaminoan’s own level, “Would it be okay if I visited you again? I would like to see and hear more of your creations sometime.”

“Oh yes!” Nel says with no small amount of excitement, “I would like that!”

The General nods and places a hand on each of Nel’s slight shoulders, Kaminoan physiology obviously quite different than what she was used to. Still, Nel seems to appreciate the gentle embrace even if she looks a bit confused now.

“Lead on, 0027.”

Following the order, you leave the Kaminoan and her tools and trinkets behind you, stepping into the hall. With a last wave, Secura signals goodby to Nel and the young girl raises her three fingered hand back slightly. You quickly put the arrowhead into one of your equipment pouches as you remove your pad. You connect the security device back to the panel and return the door to its shut position, before reengaging the locks.

“That was… quite strange,” Secura says aloud to you, as the both of you walk down the hall. She glances back at the door, probably burning it’s location into her mind.

“What made you want to go inside, General?” you ask, recalling her sudden demand while you were checking it.

The Jedi’s eyes linger on the door a moment longer until it slips out of view behind you.

“Something important,” she says nebulously. It’s far from surprising for a Jedi, so you just chalk it up to more of their special senses. Remembering General Trebor’s words, they probably had some reason or another even they didn’t fully understand.

When you reach the lift, you’re a bit surprised when it comes almost directly when called. It seems as though it’s already been repaired and put back in operation. Kaminoan maintenance must have been right on the problem and you wonder if it had managed in slowing your target down at all. It was a moot point perhaps, but you still had felt some pride at the idea. If it hadn’t been long-lived, that meant you would need to keep improving.

“I must return to my own duties,” General Secura says to you calmly as she steps onto the turbolift, “Thank you for helping me, 0027. Please just try to avoid doing anything illegal while you're training.”

She tilts her head slightly as the lift’s doors close and leaves you behind. You’re left with only your own thoughts. You knew you could now report to A’den, but you pause to wonder a bit at what you should exactly tell him. Nel was certainly something interesting, but somehow revealing her existence without knowing precisely why she was there felt like a job half-finished. Similarly, pointing out that the target was manipulating room security and possibly even floor assignments was a very important piece of info. A’den could of course ask you why it was happening, but that could yet be less important than the actual deed. Still, there was also the chance A’den already knew everything and was just seeing if you could figure it all out…

>You don’t have all the pieces yet, but you have enough to show. Tell A’den about this strange floor and the rooms with altered security. The target is clearly abusing his position.
>Tell him everything about Nel, her condition, and her art. The target must have a very un-Kaminoan soft spot for her and that was a potential advantage.

>Tell him everything about Nel, her condition, and her art. The target must have a very un-Kaminoan soft spot for her and that was a potential advantage.

The story you tell to A’den spare no details. From the moment you begin to retell it all you go into pointed and precise notes on how you learned the target’s patterns, movements, and key areas. It sets up the story nicely as you describe your tracking of them through the many halls and passageways of the busy city and even how you took advantage of his predictability to stalk ahead to the turbolift and monitor for him there. The story, naturally, becomes more complicated the second you mention the arrival of General Secura. A’den looks to be a bit surprised as you explain how you tried to throw her off your tail and your impromptu modification to the turbolift.

He seems more than a little curious too when you talk about going off script and investigating the mysterious room filled with the large amount of containers and misshapen items. You purposely highlight the defenses on the door and the relative lack of traffic on the whole floor to make your points on why it was suspicious he had stopped on that level specifically, and why it had caught you by surprise. The ARC trooper nods occasionally to show that he’s following along, but you can already see him starting to look a bit more thoughtful and, perhaps, distracted by his own thoughts. He doesn’t seem to be paying much attention when you explain how Secura found you and decided to follow you, but that was probably for the best.

It’s a perfect time, you think, to tell him about Nel.

If A’den had known about her before he sent you out, he’s doing an incredible job acting his confusion. There’s real excitement in his words as he asks you to explain more of what you had seen and heard from her. You can tell he’s piecing things together in his head, his perfect memory and heightened analytical abilities likely calculating things you have no perception of yourself. The fact that you seemed to have triggered some new piece of information to his mind is most certainly a victory for your training. You wrap up the talk about the green-eyed Kaminoan by mentioning Secura’s words to check in on her.

For your last revelation, you pull out the metallic dart you had found in Nel’s possessions. Completely out of place and very clearly lethal, you give it to A’den to observe. He briefly glances at it before handing it back to you. He warns you to be careful not to poke yourself, revealing the dart to be a particularly deadly Kaminoan invention. It’s poison would kill just about anything in seconds, he reveals. Why Nel would have it, he doesn’t make any mention.

>Ask him what he’s going to do with the information.

“Information is power,” the Null explains, “We’ll use it to the best effect we can. Kal’buir will have the final say on that, however.”

“You must have some idea,” you probe a bit.

A’den’s face darkens, his mood obviously not supportive of you asking. You had to be careful with him, you knew, his hair trigger was faster than his blaster and probably just as deadly. Avoiding any signs of aggression or fear, you keep almost perfectly still with your helmet leveled straight at him.

“If Kal’buir didn’t tell you,” he says rather seriously, “Then you need only worry about your training.”

You’re not exactly willing to give up the line of questioning, but you remain wary of pushing your so far historic luck any further. It would have to come from a different direction if you really wanted to make any progress.

“The Jedi seems to like the girl,” you point out, “What would happen if anyone found out about her?”

“The Kaminoan?” A’den doesn’t skip a beat, “They would destroy her.”

“Because of her eyes?”

“Because they’re all monsters,” he tells you fiercely, “Because every aspect of their society is about destroying anything in them or their creations that aren’t perfect. They tried to kill my brothers and me, but they didn’t count on Kal’buir or any decent species knowing how wrong they were.”

“Her father is hiding her from that,” you remind him, “Why would he do that? Doesn’t seem Kaminoan.”

“It might be perfectly Kaminoan,” he says more thoughtfully, his anger turned to cunning in a moment, “I’m sure of it. They don’t think like we do, little brother. They can’t. They’ve practically removed compassion and empathy for what they see as inferior from their society genetically.”

“He has another motive…”

“He has a weakness,” A’den says, “But I’m not convinced it’s her.”

You’re terribly curious to know what he might be thinking, but the Null goes quiet, reflecting in his own thoughts. You’d rather not force the issue much more, but there’s one last angle that you want to try.

“I can find out,” you offer.

It made sense to you that you’re training might yet be extended further, but A’den doesn’t even look back your way.

“Negative, I was just told there’s something else for you to focus on for a while.”

You’re caught off guard. What did he mean?

“A promotion,” he smiles, “Congratulations…”

I'm surprised that we didn't start out as a corporal. I get that we don't have the qualifications yet for an officer's command, but we've always been at the forefront directing our brothers, even from the training days.

It's because of Wrax's escape, right? Had he not, we probably would have been on the fast track to some NCO spot. That's ignoring the fact we've been threatened with reconditioning at least twice.

>”Sergeant.”

The word registers in your head, but it takes you a few seconds to process what’s being said.

“Say again?”

“You wish,” A’den retorts, “I was told you’ve been promoted. You're now the same rank as Kal’buir and I in the Grand Army… You better do a good job.”

Being promoted had been the last thing you had been the last thing you expected to hear about yourself. Afterall, it hadn’t even been a matter of weeks since you were thrown into a cell and threatened to be punished severely. Even before that you had largely expected to be a trooper for a very long time. Sure had received training beyond most troopers and even had experience in the field, but that seemed to matter rather little in the grand scheme of things. Officers had been bred from special batches of Clones, trained to lead their entire lives. Sergeants had largely been taught in the same manner with their squads assigned especially to them.

That you were being made a Sergeant struck you as more than just chance. Without your discipline record it would have been an assured thing eventually, but for it to happen now pointed at a much more practical reason. The casualties taken by the Grand Army were surely so high they were having to reorganize and reorganizing likely meant a need for new officers and NCOs. You had been so busy with your training you had probably missed much of the idle chatter about it. The days training under A’den were long, even going deep into the night. Your hours weren’t the only reason you hadn’t been keeping up either, you remind yourself, most of your brothers and squad were still recovering. Who would you have talked to anyway?

“What happens now?” you ask A’den slowly, “I’m not… trained on how to be promoted.”

The Null gives you a rather odd.

“Don’t ask me,” he manages at last, “I’m never going to be promoted. You should probably report to one of your officers. They’ll break you in with new orders.”

That was probably the wise thing and most likely what you would have done anyway. If you went back now you could probably catch the battalion coming out of their chow cycle. A part of you always wants to check in with your brothers right away, to see if they had an inkling of what was happening.

“Sarge… A’den,” you ask him directly, “What if they want to put me through training of their own?”

“What about it?”

“I’ll probably have to be taught how to run a squad,” you explain.

The ARC leans back and crosses his arms.

“Report to me in your down time, little brother” he replies, “We’ll train when we can.”

You acknowledge the order and decide to depart without wasting any time. You decide it would be best to seek out…

>Captain Alphonse, your company commander.

It was the logical choice, you decide, and the one that would get on track the quickest. If there was going to be training, you needed to get started on it right away. There was no telling for how long the battalion would remain on Kamino. The war had, so far, been something of a holonet let down. While plenty of planets were still seceding or declaring themselves one way or another, actual fighting had been limited to a handful of capital ship engagements that were mostly inconclusive. From the reports that you had heard, the CIS had started making maneuvers in the hyperspace lanes and the Republic so far was focusing on doing it’s best to keep them from slipping into the Core areas. This meant the Separatists had an almost free hand, but they seemed hesitant to lose more of their numbers before replacements could be drawn.

The Separatists had taken heavy losses from Geonosis and Kamino, much like the Republic had, but droids were quick to be built and you knew it wouldn’t be long before they attempted to force more battles. Rapidly advancing now was setting themselves up for a quick end to the war, using panic and alarmism to turn planets to their side one at time. That couldn’t be allowed to last, even a trooper-- a Sergeant, you correct yourself, could know that much about the larger strategy.

The Republic needed to start fighting them soon and you suspected battalions like yours would be striking them again and again. Clones like Captain Alphonse would be an important part of leading them.

The officer isn’t with the rest of your company when you find them hurriedly eating their meals. Instead, he appears to be pouring over a number of datapads as a pair of logistic droids flank him. You approach him quickly, saluting as you come to attention.

“CT-0027 reporting, Sir,” you sound off.

Alphonse looks up and nods.

“At ease, soldier,” he orders, “I take it you heard the news?”

“That I’m a Sergeant now, Sir,” you answer.

“Affirmative,” the captain replies, looking back down to the pads. He hands one over to you.

“These are your first orders. We'll discuss your new duties later. Patch together your squad and get your muster list back to me within the hour.”

As you look over the info on the pad, you're struck by several details instantly.

“Yes, Sir,” you start to say, “There’s been a large reorganization hasn’t there?”

“Correct, I don’t have enough time now to brief you individually, but I’ll be meeting with all of our NCOs and officers later this evening. I’ll be putting together all of your inputs and covering our new order of battle. The short form is simple: We’re going to be getting lots of new troopers and we need to make the impact to our effectiveness minimal. There’s more info on the pad. Dismissed.”

You want to ask more, but you know the Captain’s time is likely pressed...
>>
“I’ll have it for you shortly, Sir,” you reply with a salute.

Walking away from the Captain, you decide to start taking it all in. Right out the top of your command info you see the name of your platoon leader, Lieutenant…

>Falx, the officer you had led you all into the hangar. He seemed a bit reckless, but at least had shown understanding of your particular abilities. He’s been given a noticeably larger platoon with what looks like most of the intact squads.
>Bones, the die-hard from the Aid Station on Geonosis. You had helped each other. He was generally considered one of the best fighters in the company, not a bad match for your style. The platoon looks to be geared for offensive actions with engineers attached.
>Crix, the one you had seen the least of on Geonosis. He was much more level-headed than the rest from what you had heard and might benefit from an aggressive Sergeant. His platoon has heavy weapon squads attached, perhaps more defensive.
>Dance, your apparently recently promoted former Sergeant. He had recovered quickly and must have been moved into the new position. His platoon looks standard, but the units here are some of the most depleted.

Welcome to Lieutenant Bones' wild platoon.

>Bones, the die-hard from the Aid Station on Geonosis. You had helped each other. He was generally considered one of the best fighters in the company, not a bad match for your style. The platoon looks to be geared for offensive actions with engineers attached.

That your assigned platoon had changed wasn’t a large surprise considering the losses the company had taken as a whole. If anything, it was probably to be expected that your squad and you might be moved to a more aggressive tasking on the battlefield. That you were under Lieutenant Bones struck you as a good fit as well. He had pulled you from what surely would have been a cairn made of broken droid parts on Geonosis. Knowing how well he could fight too made you feel confident your new training would be of great use among his and your troopers.

The question of your troopers, however, was another question. Besides Dance’s promotion and the death of 7651, the squad wasn't exactly in the best of shape. The injuries 5309 had taken were expected to take much longer to heal, the heavy gunner wasn’t likely to continue in the squad for now and would need a long recuperation before cycling back in. Beast seemed to be in good shape and recovering, he was already listed as active, but the other large, shield-bearing trooper wasn’t as lucky. CT-9009 had lost his leg in the landing operation for the hangar assault and had been removed from your squad roster. It was disappointing to lose a brother like that, but you had spent only a handful of hours with him and you were at least glad he had survived. He had gone down so early you hadn’t had the chance to fight beside him like you did 7651 and 5309.

Your brothers, for their part, were much more well off, at least physically. 2337’s charges for killing the ARC trooper are still hanging over his head. Although he’s been released from his cell, there seems to be some question if he’ll be allowed off-world until the matter is fully resolved, which wasn’t likely until the Kaminoan government was back in order. While Kal Skirata and General Trebor had certainly intervened in your favor, 2337’s difficulties were a much more delicate matter. 4582 and Guile were both back in fighting shape you knew and they would almost certainly play a major part in the squad going forward.

In all, that meant you were down to three troopers. It would maybe be four if 2337 was cleared in short order, but the orders here are clear you need to build the squad assuming not.

You look over the new additions…

CT-0641: a clone with a scared face from the battle of Geonosis where an exploding Destroyer cut four gouges over his face. A miracle worker with a Grenade launcher which he normally uses in support of his squad mates herd enemies into cover only to blow them up. Affectionately named "Grizzly" due to his large frame and exterior disposition of being a cuddly guy despite it all.

CT-0626: referred to as "Wasp" by his team the clone is a sly and ambitious sort being threatened with reconditioning several times but his technical hacking skills were deemed worth keeping for now, he is often seen with his tools and a Blaster working in support of Grizzly the two having endured Geonosis together.

I like Grizzly a bit more than Wasp.

Wasp as a clone wouldn't get threatened with reconditioning more than once or twice before it would happen. Clones have been liquidated for less.

CT-0027, your unit has five openings. From the list below, select two troopers to pass on back to the unit pool. The rest will become integrated into your unit immediately.

Choices are as follows:

CT-9145 “Harm”: A heavy-set trooper with a high and tight haircut, Harm’s previous unit was disbanded from high losses on Geonosis. His photo seems to show him with intricate symbols and designs on his face, none of which you recognize.

CT-5536: An assault oriented trooper who has high marks with blaster pistols. His last unit was largely killed off during the room to room fighting here on Kamino. His head is shaved, but he seems to have a bear… you’re pretty sure that’s not regulation.

CT-6018: A demolitions expert with proficiency on a shotgun and very distinctive scars on his face. His report says he was injured on Geonosis while defusing a large explosive device, but without other context. He’s recovered enough to return to frontline service.

CT-4515 “Vay”: Clone sniper, excellent record with his rifle on Geonosis and no blemishes on his record anywhere. He had been assigned to a sharpshooter unit, but their LAAT/i splashed in the water during planetfall on Kamino. He has a very noticeable widow’s peak.

CT-5016 “Fifty”: A Corporal, the only one on the list who’s not just a trooper. He’s from a different squad in Shriek-Hawk battalion apparently. He’s noted as having something of a temper. His haircut and face looks like anyone else, but his piercing stare is somewhat unsettling even in just his picture.

CT-0641 “Grizzly”: Three prominent, parallel scars on his head seems to tell a tale of almost losing his face on Geonosis. He’s got a grenade launcher, which is a rather odd thing to read, that he seems to lug around with good effect. You’re used to those only issued sparingly and mostly to jump troops.

CT-0626 “Wasp”: An engineer with solid slicing skills and even piloting training. He’s from the same unit as Grizzly but has a much longer discipline record. He seems to have gotten in some trouble, though the details aren’t very clear.

CT-5016 “Fifty”

Acknowledged, CT-0027. The remaining troopers will be assigned in reporting to you in short order.

Your personal specialties include Assault and Close Combat, Medical Training, and Piloting. Your recent experience includes Espionage and Special Operations.

Your current squad is as follows, with their own general specialties:

>CT-4457 "Guile": Sniper, Assault, Pilot
>CT-4582: Generalist, Pilot
>CT-9145 “Harm”: Shocktrooper, Heavy Weapons
>CT-5536: Assault, Close Combat
>CT-6018: Engineering, Demolitions
>CT-0626 “Wasp”: Engineering, Pilot
>CT-0641 “Grizzly”: Grenadier, Heavy Weapons

You will be able to adjust your squad's formation and weaponry, as well as designate a second in command or element leaders to assist in completing your objectives.

Overall squad makeup points to high capability in Assault, Engineering, and Piloting. Your official designation is as an Infantry Squad. Lieutenant Bones has ultimate authority on the battlefield for your assignment, but it is likely he will make use of your squad in the role of assault spearhead and breaching fortifications.

Bones' platoon will nominally be assigned assault orders for breaking specific enemy positions. This would potentially include making use of air or armored elements depending on availability of resources and battlefield conditions.

This support the overall unit under Captain Alphonse in the role of an Assault Company, which will have general orders to take and hold ground while other elements of the battalion move into support positions or to engage in maneuvers that disrupt enemy formations by causing as much damage as possible or preventing their own maneuvers from engaging the rest of the battalion.

This ties directly into Shriek Hawk Battalion's role as an Assault Battalion in...

Acknowledged. Your unit will operate largely independently, though may be called into support larger Republic forces when additional troops are needed. This tactical flexibility is a critical aspect to the Republic’s new strategy for countering the Separatist threat across a vast array of worlds. As droid forces storm system after system, the Grand Army has seen fit to break off units small enough to cover a vast amount of Republic space. However, the units are also required to be large enough to hold the ground they’re assigned to, both holding out and fighting back against any invading droid force. Other duties may include cooperating with local planetary defensive forces and militias or organizing non-clone units, performing high priority target of opportunity missions, or rooting out Separatist and Droid forces on Republic worlds.

Your regiment is far away from receiving orders like that however, as a large number of troopers are still convalescing and returning to the unit each day. Captain Alphonse has made it clear to all of the sergeants and lieutenants in his company that this downtime is critical for establishing unit cohesiveness. New sergeants, such as yourself, will be required to undergo a group training that focuses on the importance of small unit leadership and tactics to maximize your effectiveness on the battlefield. Although you have largely been acting in a leadership role for some time now, this class will provide additional insight into how best to organize your squad to accomplish your objectives.

Additionally, after turning in your squad roster, you have also been ordered to familiarize your troopers with each other in a short period of time. Naturally, your immediate idea is to form a Battle Circle of your Vode, though this time your goal would be to organize the fights much as Wrax had done for your brothers. Having them fight would also serve to reinforce the Mandalorian core beliefs that you had learned from both Wrax and now A’den. The ARC trooper’s training in close combat had been a great insight for you and passing it on to your troops is now one of your highest priorities.

>Squad Battle Circle

After turning in your squad roster, you prepared for the briefing from Captain Alphonse to the rest of the company’s NCOs and officers. The beginning had been largely straightforward, an introduction into Shriek Hawk Battalion’s reorganization. Alphonse quickly presents a break down of the regiment. Designated as the 905th Regiment, he outlines the fact that the unit will largely be operating on its own and, accordingly, has acquired a transport and artillery battalion to back up Shriek Hawk and the two accompanying infantry battalions.

Shriek Hawk would, itself, would be expanded to include an armored support and walker scout company to support the infantry and assault companies, including yours: Third Company. Alphonse goes into larger detail as he breaks down his unit, describing the platoon focuses. Lieutenant Falx would be leading Alpha platoon, consisting of a full eight infantry squads containing many of the most intact squads from Geonosis and Kamino, effectively making a very strong infantry core for any primary or secondary battleline. Dance, on his recent promotion, would be given Bravo platoon, which was slated to be where the majority of new Clones from training would be placed to get them ready for the realities of combat, likely as a reserve force. When he gets to Bones and Charlie platoon, he explains your own squad and the other squads you’d likely be fighting with. Besides your infantry squad there was to be a second, supported directly by two heavy weapon squads, an engineering squad, and the potential for armor to be attached from the supporting armored battalion. Lieutenant Crix had Delta platoon, which was outwardly similar to yours, but without engineers. Alphonse also notes that Crix’s heavy weapons platoons are meant for holding ground from counterattacks.
As he goes on to talk more on the logistics and communication networks, you find your mind already thinking how you would best lead your squad within the larger framework of the company and battalion. The decision in your mind was simple, you would have to ensure that your squad was prepared for the most dangerous of circumstances. That your squad would likely be in the thickest of fighting for your regiment wasn’t lost on you. Being in the offensive element of your regiment’s assault battalion meant that your brothers and you would be the ones called on when victory was needed swiftly and decisively. There was going to be no room for half-measures. If your squad or platoon stalled, you think to yourself, then it was likely hundreds of other Clones would be held up and put into danger...

The Battle Circle, you find yourself thinking.

It would be the best way to get your brothers and you acquainted with new Clones and prepared for the coming challenges. Organizing a Battle Circle would set the pace for the rest of your training together and would go a long way at giving you a good measure of their combat capabilities hand to hand. The Battle Circle was what had made you come to understand the strengths and limitations of your brothers and yourself, it would help you do so again you’re certain. As the briefing starts coming to a close, you’re decided that you want to assemble your squad immediately and begin training as soon as you can.

Alphonse dismisses all of the other Sergeants and you to your Lieutenants, but Bones rather directly speaks everything on your mind and gives you all authority to begin training your new squads. As he, in turn, dismisses the five of you, you wonder if you should tell him your intention.

You had specifically left Dance out of the last Battle Circle when he was your Sergeant, uncertain on how he would respond. While you didn’t know Bones’ leadership style specifically, you knew he was a fearsome fighter. He had fought like a demon on Geonosis and had even saved you from almost certain death. Perhaps he would be more understanding? He may even want to participate...

>Privately inform Bones of your intention to use the Battle Circle, invite him to join.

As the other Sergeants depart, you linger for a moment longer to speak directly with the Lieutenant. Bones notices your intention and takes a step forward.

“Congratulations, Sergeant Chief,” he says with a little mirth, invoking the name you had been called during the battle at the Aid Station.

“Thank you,” you nod, “It’s good to have a proper rank, Sir.”

“How will your training be affected by it?” he asks, diving straight into the matter of your learning with A’den.

“I’ll have less time, certainly,” you explain simply, “Will make for some long days and nights.”

“Make every bit of it count,” Bones encourages, “If he’s even better than the ARCs some of us officers are getting briefed and trained by, it’s going to be a critical advantage.”

You’re a bit taken aback by the comment. You suppose it wasn't surprising that an officer like Bones would be picked up for ARC training, but given your recent experiences with them you can’t help but wonder.

“How are you…” you start to question, “Finding them, Sir? The ARCs.”

The lieutenant gives a shrug, the expression behind his helmet unknowable.

“Shiny armor, neat kamas,” he starts, “They lost a lot of numbers. The ones that are left are a mixed bunch. Some survived because they were clever, others because they were lucky. You can tell which is which quick enough.”

That made sense to you, you suppose, but your own opinion remained somewhat colored against them. It struck you as an opportunity though…

“How much have they focused on hand to hand, Sir?” you ask him thoughtfully, “Were they able to teach you any tricks?”

The Lieutenant cocks his head confidently.

“A few things, I suppose,” he says slowly, “Sizing our trainers up, Sergeant?”

“Just ourselves, Sir,” you follow up quickly.

“That sounds like a sparring challenge, Sergeant,” he laughs, “Between the Null ARC and Sergeant training, do you really need another person to beat you down?”

“More like, build my squad up, Sir,” you turn the conversation around, leading him to the obvious question.

“What do you mean?”

You take a breath and keep your voice cool and steady.

“Sir, are you familiar with the Battle Circle?”

His helmet noticeably shifts as he goes from confidence to slight confusion.

“It’s a tradition that Sergeant Wrax taught my brothers and me,” you go on, explaining, “It’s an ancient warrior practice that puts fighters against each other to teach and learn their limits. I plan to use it for familiarizing my squad and passing on some of Sergeant A’den’s techniques.”
>>
>>4126807
“How’s it different from martial arts drills or just sparring?” he says, unconvinced.

“Respectfully, explaining it is only half the story, Sir,” you elude the question. He would probably need to be a part of it for him to recognize the benefits physically…

“Would you join us and see for yourself?”

The Lieutenant is quiet for a few moments, but finally nods.

“Alright, Sergeant, I’ll bite,” he agrees, “Circle or not, far be it from me to run from a battle of any kind.”

“Thank you, Sir,” you reply, “I’ll gather my squad and have them form up in the Oh-Three training field in an hour.”

“I’ll be there,” Bones confirms, before taking his leave.

With yourself on the clock, you quickly hurry to collect each of your troopers. Your brothers are quick to tag along and the new Clones are assembled and following you shortly later with only the briefest introduction and confirmation of orders.

When you arrive at the training field at last, you find the Lieutenant there waiting already. The rest of the field is deserted, save for a few droids patching up blaster holes holes high up on the walls.

You order the troopers to form a circle and offer Bones a spot opposite to you. Thinking back to the Circle you held before the last battle began, you recall your words and opt to keep the tradition high and the informality low.

“This ring of brothers,” you recite your own words, “Is as strong as beskar.”

Your brothers and Beast, having heard this before, look on motionlessly. The rest of the new Clones keep still as well, likely deferring to your rank or respecting the Lieutenant’s presence. Bones seems to be willing to let you run things. Unlike last time, you’re not interrupted...

“The Battle Circle,” you continue, “Is an ancient tradition, passed down through generations of the greatest warriors in the galaxy: The Mandalorians. From the armor we wear to the blood in our veins, we are a part of this tradition. Here we will learn about each other and ourselves. I am the Champion of this Battle Circle and will ensure we uphold its honor. Here we will fight in our armor, because it is a part of us. We will strike no killing blows, because we are Vode. We will fight until we cannot continue, because that is the way of learning truth.”

You watch as Bones shifts slightly when you announce your role as Champion, but he continues to listen quietly.

“We do not do this lightly, just as we do not war or train lightly. What you learn here today is necessary. Learn everything you can about yourselves and your brothers, because their lives and your own depend on it, just as we depend on each other.”

With a short breath, you call alud the first pairing.

“Step forward,” you say...

>”Guile and 4582.” You want your brothers to show the rest how it’s done.

If there was anyone here who could show what the Battle Circle was about, besides yourself, it was your Vode.

The two Clones step forward, centering themselves apart from each other in the middle of the circle. They had fought together against you in your very first Battle Circle when Wrax had introduced all of you to the concept. You had prevailed against them by the slimmest of margins, but you wondered to yourself which of them might have the advantage over the other. Your instinct tells you that Guile would likely have the edge, he had shown himself as a capable fighter then. 4582 was solid in his fundamentals and drilled training, but you weren’t certain that would hold up against a skilled opponent. Still, the two of them had been more or less paired up on everything from piloting the LAAT to working as a sniper team in the time since.

How they started would be the key, you knew. Guile was likely to set the tempo and 4582 would probably react. From there it would be Guile’s fight to control and, should he be persistent, wear away at 4582’s defenses. At least, that was your estimate of things. Whether the two of them would be so predictable was another matter altogether. You look around at the rest of the circle while the two of them face off, carefully looking at the troopers and Lieutenant, searching for any signs of their responses. Bones body language is intrigued, certainly, leaning forward slightly into the ring. The rest look on behind expressionless helmets.

With one last moment of pause, your two brothers size one another up before the first move is made. To no surprise, it’s Guile lunging forward. The sniper had a speed and dexterity advantage surely, it was his initiative to take and he doesn’t disappoint. Striking outward with a wide right, he forces 4582 into an early, defensive posture. Though he isn’t nearly as accomplished a fighter as you, you’re proud to see 4582 expertly block the attack almost on reflex with his left arm, before countering with his own right. Guile’s defense is up, expecting the move, but he lurches suddenly in surprise. Instead of just a punch, 4582 has delivered a sharp, biting kick into Guile’s leading leg.

It’s unorthodox, especially for 4582. He’s knocked Guile off balance successfully, but it’s left him in an awkward position of his own with his leg out of place. Worse, taking his leg up with his arm reduced the effectiveness of both strikes. Guile needs only to replant his foot and he’ll be able to-

4582, somehow adjusting his stance to lead into a swing of his left arm, is lunginging forward at Guile again! Guile has barely enough time to raise his hands to guard his face against the incoming fist…

That never arrives. 4582 has instead…

He won’t expect going for the legs.

That would definitely be super cool. As far as what the colors and designs would like, I'm not certain, but I can try to work dome options in. It is important to note that we are still very early in the war, so individualized armor hasn't quite come in vogue. We've probably triggered enough divergence for it to happen sooner than Canon though.

>Grabs his shoulder, pulls him in, and hammers with his other elbow!

The move is unexpected. Rather than taking advantage of Guile’s overprotection, 4582 presses the assault directly to it. As he pulls in Guile, he brings his free hand up to his shoulder, sending his elbow slamming straight into his brother’s defenses. Guile has the benefit of being ready for it and absorbs the blow admirably, but it does keep him from responding. 4582 uses the opportunity to pull Guile’s shoulder downward and bring up his own knee into his side. Although he’s tucked, you can tell that Guile takes more than a little punishment from it. The onslaught continues as 4582 rains a series of quick punches with his free hand at Guile’s helmet and upper body.

Realizing he’s in a bad position, Guile closes and reaches out to clinch 4582, drawing him close enough to render the punches ineffective. 4582 seems to see it coming, however, and simply slides his hand from Guile’s shoulder to behind his head and then completes his own clinch behind Guile’s neck, controlling his head. With Guile bent over slightly, there’s enough room for 4582 to begin delivering strikes with his knees again, this time into Guile’s midsection. It’s an impressive offensive display, but as time wears on and the strikes keep landing, you realize that Guile is more than capable of weathering them. Keeping his guard up and his muscles clenched, you start to think that’s he’s taking the beating on purpose and biding his time. Were he unarmored, you’re certain he’d be gasping for breath and taking severe damage. However, Guile is allowing his armor to take the brunt of the assault. It’s then that you notice 4582 starting to slow slightly…

Guile’s patience has paid off. Rather than panicking when he was clinched, letting 4582 wear himself down was all the opening he needed. As 4582 brings up yet another knee, Guile releases his clinch and drops his arms down, grabbing 4582’s leg as it hits. Without so much as a breath, Guile wrench’s upward and lifts 4582’s foot from the ground.

4582 rises, the expression under his helmet surely one of shock. His body language shifts from confidence to desperation in a moment. He releases his clinch when he realizes Guile is using it to leverage him. He pushes off of him, preventing him from being thrown over top of Guile. However, the extra bit of momentum allows Guile to shift his mass forward and pull 4582’s leg further in. The result is apparent to you in an instant, as 4582 starts to fall over backward. Guile drives him hard into the deck, 4582’s helmet impact echoing with a loud crashing sound all around.

As 4582’s arms fall to the side, Guile releases his grip and immediately takes a controlling position over him, using one hand to keep 4582 from raising an arm in defense and the other to return the favor of blows he had given earlier. The overall momentum thoroughly turned, it only takes a few more moments of Guile’s hammer blows to force 4582 to surrender, unable to continue. He had shown creativity, clearly understanding he was at a disadvantage to begin and needing to be unpredictable. His mistake was not knowing his own limits or, perhaps, not entirely understanding the limits of the techniques he was using. Guile, on the other hand, had perhaps underestimated 4582’s creativity, but he had enough discipline to weather the assault before countering with his own.

Guile helps 4582 back up, after giving your brother a few extra moments to breath. Together, they make their way to the side of the Circle with the rest of the Clones watching. You’re pretty certain Bones wants to clap, but he cues off your motionlessness to hold back.

You decide it’s time for the new brothers to try, you decide to pair a couple matches by putting...

>Dissimilar skills against each other, to see who’s best at adapting and using their advantages.

Wrax had put the emphasis on one thing when he showed your brothers what it meant to fight in the Battle Circle: Adapting. When you had fought Guile and 4582, you had to overcome multiple threats with nothing but your own skills. Even before that, he had led 4582 and you to realize your brother’s own need to use the help of his vode to challenge foes that seemed unassailable. Just as well, Countdown had been forced to realize his own limitations in fighting. Both you and he were forced to understand that he would need to use other means on the battlefield to be effective. That had been the lesson you carried with you into the struggle with Sergeant Vrul. You wonder for a moment how things on Geonosis and here on Kamino would have been with Countdown next to you...

These brothers with you now would learn the same way, you decide.

“Harm and 6018,” you say aloud, “Step forward.”

The two Clones, to their credit, obey immediately. Stepping into the Circle and standing opposite to each other, they behave as though it’s all natural to them. Even though they had only ever seen one fight it’s already as though they understand what it was all about. You had guessed it would probably be the case. They were different in many ways, certainly. Harm was a bruiser in all ways. Large, strong, and trained in hefting heavy weapons and shields, he was certainly powerful in terms of raw strength. 6018 was an engineer, although trained in hand to hand combat like all of you had been, his focuses were technical in nature. Psychologically, you suppose, there were probably other differences too. 6018 specialized in demolitions, destroying things. That took a certain mindset. And, although you had no proof of it, you had a feeling that Harm was more of a creator. Something about the tattoos on his picture struck you as familiar. Not that you understood what they were or what they might mean to him, but you suspect he had done them to himself. It was potentially his own form of “art” like the green-eyed Kaminoan you had discovered...

But, you remind yourself, there was one thing that they seemed to have in common: They were both survivors. It was likely why they both now stood so confidently. Harm had come from a unit that wasn’t almost entirely destroyed on Geonosis. 6018 had been severely injured by the bomb he was defusing and it had likely killed his partner or other members of his team as well. The two of them had been surrounded by death by many of the brothers they had spent their entire lives with. You had seen many Clones die, but your Vode had so far been spared that fate. There was a difference there that you recognized.

The two of them begin…

They’re clearly not in any hurry to just start swinging as 4582 and Guile had been. The two Clones take their time as they attempt to size up their opponent. You couldn’t particularly fault them for it, this was their first time you think. Your brothers and you had been fighting and training together all your lives, it gave you a good sense of what they were capable of and how to proceed, but these two would have to figure things out in mere moments. One wrong move could decide the battle before it even starts. They’ve each taken an Echani stance, just like the standard hand to hand training. What was nonstandard about them would be revealed soon enough.

Harm, given his name and size advantage, seemed the candidate to jump in first to you. Every extra moment 6081 had to think things over was probably to his advantage, Harm would have to act soon. The shocktrooper, however, gives no sign that he intends to. He was likely hoping to counter whatever 6081 could throw at him. Indeed, it’s the engineer that gets to make the first move, whether tired of waiting or fully prepared you’re not certain. 6081 advances with a pair of quick steps and closes with Harm rapidly, keeping his guard high until the last moment. Harm swings an arm to strike, but 6081 ducks low and strikes forward. Closing his open hand into a fist, he hits precisely upward into the joint between Harm’s chest and shoulder armor.

The larger clone retreats slightly, but 6081 keeps his momentum flowing and follows with another strike into 6081’s side. It’s going quite well, you think, until he tries it again to the opposite side. This time Harm expects it. He grabs 6081’s arm with one hand and the engineer’s back with the other, twisting on his hip to throw him to the ground with a thud. Harm follows up by falling on top of him, striking doward to finish 6081 quickly. He’s a little sloppy, however, missing the critical hold to keep 6081 pinned and the engineer, to his credit, has no intent of giving up. He rocks backward and wraps a leg around Harm’s midsection, before aggressively knocking him over.
>>
>>4128711
>>4128727
Mandalorians have different meanings for different colored armor. Red, for instance, means honoring a parent. The two I think most fit our character are green (duty) and black (justice). Gold (vengeance) might fit too, but we might want to wait for character development and just pick base for the battalion now. Just not red, I hate the Coruscant Guard.
>>
>>4129743
This time it’s Harm who’s forced to scramble, as he tries quickly to roll to his back. 6081 is already diving for him though. The engineer lands a few solid strikes on the back of Harm’s helmet, but he’s not strong enough to stop Harm from rolling, knocking him off. The fight quickly loses all form as the two of them start trading blows on the ground. It’s desperate and savage. The two hammer away at each other with brutal determination, but you know this kind of fight favors Harm. He absorbs punches just a little better than 6081 and gives them back a portion harder. The cumulative effect is obvious as 6081 grows less and less able to respond, first forced to only defend himself and then even that fading.

Harm keeps punching until 6081 stops moving. It takes him a few moments to stand up, exhausted. He stumbles backwards and waits for any sign of life from 6081. The engineer somehow manages to come back to, but you know he’s in for a trip to the infirmary when this over. Guile and 5536 are standing closest to him and help drag him to the side.

"You began well, 6081," you start to offer critique and correction, "But you lost your discipline and lost the fight. Your aggressiveness was appropriate though, just like 4582's had been. You'll be more successful once you harness your determination and focus it into a plan."

The beaten trooper nods his head slowly, accepting your words. You turn to Harm.

"You've won, but it was a near thing. Your advantage in strength won the day, but you won't always have that. You were right to be patient, just like Guile was, but when the critical moment comes you can't miss. This fight would have been over much sooner and with much less damage to yourself."

"Yes, Sergeant," Harm replies, a labored breath punctuating his words.

Hopefully the two of them would take it to heart, otherwise they'd probably run out of luck sooner than later. Strength wasn't enough when you were fighting droids that could tear you apart. Panic and breaking from the plan in face of an enemy was the surest way to be defeated. Each lesson had to be learned.

With the fight complete, you move immediately to the next.

“Grizzly and Wasp,” you begin, “You will fight....”

>”Each other.” They likely knew each other best, you wanted to see how the squadmates would fight each other.

>”Beast and 5536.” It would be team experience versus ability, you want to see which would be the victor.

There wasn’t exactly a precedent for a two on two in the Battle Circle, you knew, it was certainly not something Wrax had ever shown or told you. The closest example you had was Guile and 4582 fighting you, but whether that was an exception Wrax allowed or something that was normal in the tradition was likely going to be a mystery for a while longer. At any rate, he certainly hadn’t told you it was something that couldn’t be done. It was important to get a sense of your squad’s innate and practiced teamwork as well, you had decided, and this was likely the best opportunity you would have.

Grizzly and Wasp had come from the same squad, had fought together on Geonosis. They likely already knew each other’s strengths and weaknesses. How they would plan to use and adapt to them was exactly what you were hoping to see. Beast and 5536, on the other hand, had never fought together before. You knew they each had high marks in this kind of combat, but there wasn’t any telling how they would fight side by side. Clones were raised with their brothers, but the losses from the battles here and on Geonosis were now forcing Clones to do the same with Clones they hadn’t trained with. Just like your squad, the entire Grand Army was going to have to learn to form new bonds in a short time. You, of course, all had your similarities in many ways, but the battles you would face together were likely going to demand more…

Unlike the last battle, the Clones in the middle don’t need a signal to begin or use any time to size each other up. Almost simultaneously, the four of them begin to fight. Grizzly has lined up opposite of Beast and the two of them are now grappling each other, struggling to overcome the other’s strength. Wasp has, in turn, finds himself facing down 5536. While 5536 clearly looks to be hoping to land a critical blow early, Wasp is making his efforts difficult. Wasp is shifty. Although he doesn’t seem to be a particularly good fighter, he’s doing well enough to avoid 5536’s attacks for now. It can’t last, however. 5536 gets a grip on Wasp’s arm and he quickly turns it into a throw, tossing the discipline-troubled trooper directly at Grizzly.

It’s then that you notice that Beast is down on the ground, he’s not even moving. One disadvantage of two fights going on was that it was hard to follow the action. You had missed that. Grizzly catches Wasp, rather than being knocked down, but it does set him off balance. The two of them separate, but 5536 seizes on it in an instant. He must know that he’s down in numbers now and will have to even the odds quickly. The Clone strikes out…

>At Beast, seeking to knock out the larger threat quickly while he can.
>At Wasp, taking advantage of his momentary confusion and vulnerability.

>At Wasp, taking advantage of his momentary confusion and vulnerability.

It’s a good instinct, you have to admit. 5536 probably thinks he can take Grizzly one on one, so getting rid of the easier target first as fast as he could would make the most sense. The trouble, you find yourself thinking, was if Wasp was the easier target…

Wasp isn’t on solid footing, but his instincts at dodging seem to be unaffected. 5536 lands a hit here and there, but they’re either partially deflected or noneffective. The situation appears to be growing worse for 5536 as Grizzly is at last sorted and ready to get back in the fight as well. He’s not giving up, however. Doubling down on his strategy, he rushes at Wasp who’s taken one too many steps toward the edge of the circle near Bones. He won’t have anywhere to escape to you realize. 5536 appears to have realized the same thing and closes with hands raised and open, ready to grab him again.

Seeing 5536 bearing down on him, Wasp simply steps to the side and then behind Bones, putting the Lieutenant in between him and 5536.

You watch, completely shocked.

5536 is forced to slow himself and you see him hesitate on what to do. Bones, who to this point had been leaning in to watch, simply straightens himself and glances between Wasp behind him, 5536 in front of him, and you to the far side of the Circle. 5536 actually turns to look at you, you’re almost certain he’s going to ask you something, when he’s caught by a blindside punch from Grizzly. The heavy weapons Clone follows up with another brutal hit to 5536’s helmet, fully turning him around. Wasp is waiting and ready. He tackles 5536 at full speed, driving his shoulder armor into his midsection and then plowing him to the deck. The two of them proceed to hit, stomp, and beat the downed Clone straight into the deck. When you see that they’re not stopping, you intervene at once.

“Enough!” you command, “He can’t fight anymore.”

Wasp and Grizzly stop on your word and step away from where Beast and 5536 lay on the deck. 5536 groans, while Beast remains motionless.

Stepping forward into the circle, you look over your beaten troopers as you approach the two still standing.

“You left the Circle,” you say directly to Wasp, staring into his visor.

“You never said I couldn’t, Sarge,” he responds back immediately, his tone rather proud. Perhaps even smug.

Turning your head to Grizzly, you point to Beast.

“How did you take him down?” you question, “I didn’t see.”

Grizzly shrugs.

“Little secret,” he finally says, “Maybe you’ll find out next, Sergeant?”

You see Bones’ head turn to look at you...

>Write in

“I certainly intend to,” you answer him directly.

“Everyone, step forward.”

On command, the troopers in your squad left standing take one large pace forward. The circle suddenly becomes much smaller very quickly. Only the Lieutenant doesn’t move, watching you quite closely with his arms crossed. Grizzly and Wasp lose a little of their confidence as the five of you now effectively surround them.

“The two of you are fighting the wrong battle. You’ve only won in this ring, you’ve lost everywhere else. Your brothers are the ones you’ll be fighting beside, keeping you alive. If you lose them you will lose everything. Against the droids we will always be outnumbered. If you treat your brothers like enemies, you’ll always be alone. If you hide behind them, they’ll either die or I’ll shoot you myself.”

You can see the two of them bristling beneath their armor as you go on. They shift slowly into a fighting stance, clearly willing to risk their odds against you and the rest. Considering how little they probably knew you, it wasn’t surprising. 4582 and 6081 had just taken a beating, Guile and Harm had certainly taken some damage too. Considering it yourself, you think, they might even like their odds against you.

What they didn’t know, they would soon find out.

“You’ve disrespected your brothers, yourselves, this Circle, and me,” you declare darkly, “You’ll answer for it. If you’re smart, you’ll learn.”

Taking another step forward, the other Clones join you in closing in on the two of them, now with their fists raised and feet taking defensive postures. This would be over quick-

“Negative, Sergeant!” Bones shouts, “Stand down!”

You freeze, mid-step. You turn your head to the Lieutenant, still standing with his arms crossed.

“Grand Army and Clone regulations,” he begins, “Strictly forbids nonjudicial corporal punishment, especially outside of combat.”

His intervention is somewhat surprising to you, he had been willing to sit back up until now, but this must have been too much even for him. He steps forward, lining up between Wasp and Grizzly opposite to you.

“These troopers need discipline,” he agrees, “But it’s not going to come from a mob. Retake your positions! This training is continuing.”

>Hold your ground. He may be an officer, but this is your Circle. If he wants to continue training, it’s going to be against you.
>Return to your spot. This isn’t the time to challenge Bones, nor do you have any right to question his orders in front of your squad.

Return to our spot but make sure we are the last to do so and very slowly. Let Bones have his good cop, bad cop moment. Maybe as we return to his side have a quick quiet word.

"There is no need for an official punishments sir, such things should be maintained on a squad level allows people to learn their place, may I?"

You should just put in a write-in option on social interactions, CT. I'm completely fine with us have two choices in combat because it really does up the stakes due to how limited your options are, and how honestly rewarding it feels when you successfully pull shit off. But overall, players can kinda fall in-line with lose-lose choices unless there's that option.

>"You wished to know the strength of our Circle, Lieutenant? Then I concede. But if you truly believe that our Vode are in need of discipline, then step forward with me, Brother, and we will give it to them ourselves."

“I get that it’s a culture thing, Sergeant,” Bones replies, his head tilted slightly, “But in this army we do not give out discipline by beatings.”

You feel your cheeks flush a bit with color as Bones seems to have a very different opinion on discipline and order than you do. He would need more time to get an understanding of Mandalorian warrior culture like you did. Perhaps your own training had been more non-standard than you had thought? He couldn’t deny what they had done was wrong, but how exactly was he expecting to punish them?

Wasp and Grizzly look to the Lieutenant and then to each other. Although you can’t see their faces under their helmets, you’re willing to bet they’re thrilled by the turn of events.

“As you’re their Sergeant,” he continues, “I will leave their discipline to you, but it must be within regulations. When this is through, I suggest you run these troopers through every PT cadence we have and then run them some more, follow it up with enough press ups and pull ups to make their blasters feel like boulders. They will either get smart or they will get strong. Do you copy?”

This was certainly new territory for you, you can’t help but note. Sergeant Wrax had always been much more hands-on in his discipline approach with your Vode and you. You hadn’t been in Sergeant Dance’s squad long enough to really understand his approach, but you’re fairly certain PT wasn’t the go-to for egregious behavior. Then again, you had gotten away pretty cleanly with making up your own orders, besides the talking to after the fact you received. It strikes you that you’re in a precarious position now, with two Clones in need of discipline but your ability to mete it out is quite limited from what you were used to.

“Yes, Lieutenant,” you acknowledge the order, despite your concerns.

“Good,” he nods, motioning for Wasp, Grizzly, and the others of your quad to go back to their position, “Who will be the next fight, Sergeant?”

At this moment, you realize, the only ones who hadn’t fought yet were you and Bones. If might be fitting to put each other to the test after that exchange. Still, you weren’t quite willing to let Wasp and Grizzly off as easily as PT. Perhaps you just needed to word your idea a bit more carefully for him to accept…

”Lieutenant,” you begin…

>”You and I will fight,” you say surely, eager to put his ARC training and your new skills to the test. This might also go some way into bringing him around, you think.
>”Their last fight was short. I will face Wasp and Grizzly,” you begin, “To demonstrate to the squad on dealing with multiple combatants.” It was a good opportunity to pass along what you had learned from A’den, at any rate.

The Lieutenant gives a very deliberate nod. By the looks of things he’s been waiting for this. In truth, you admit to yourself, you were too. It had been on your mind since you saw you were assigned to his platoon. Of the officers you had fought under, he was probably the one that had stood out to you the most. On Geonosis, Alphonse had put Bones’ platoon on the front of the battle lines and he had taken the brunt of the droid attack. That alone would have been more than enough to tell you what his opinion of his was, but you had firsthand experience. He had fought almost an entire column of droids to a standstill and somehow fought through another to pull you out of the fire.

Wasp and Grizzly give one last look to each other before taking their spots back on the Circle with the rest. They have enough presence of mind to help get 5536 and Beast drug to the side as well. Perhaps they were showing a little bit of sympathy for their brothers they had wronged or maybe they were just eager to see the Lieutenant drop you in a similar way. Whichever they were hoping for, they would certainly be getting the opposite when it came time to their discipline training. For now, you had to focus on Bones.

The Lieutenant takes his stance, settling into what looks like the standard Echani form. You’re not inclined to believe that’s all he has in store for you, but it may just be how he wants to start. If that really was the case, you decide, it would be best to keep your own surprises quiet to start. You take your own stance, arms raised in the Mandalorian style and ready.

“Show me a little more of your culture, Sergeant?” Bones says, his voice a little quieter now.

“It’s more than culture, Lieutenant,” you respond levelly, “And it’s more than mine.”

“Illuminate me,” he replies, just as the two of you spring forward against each other.

The first heartbeat has you closing together at a rapid rate, you can tell that Bones is committing right away. This was likely to your advantage you knew, your fighting style suited to close in. It was only a matter of what would be your opening blow. You're eager to light him up in more ways than one...

>Strike high and powerfully, start breaking down his defenses.

>Keep your hits quick and close, you should be able to trade hits with him while you feel him out.

You tighten up slightly, being careful to keep your body and head guarded as the two of you reach striking distance. The first pair of swings from you are searching, testing blows that lash out with a high amount of speed, contact the seams of his armor, and then quickly return back to your defense. Bones is less concerned about your hits than your head, his jabs chasing your visor in a flurry of flashes and blurs. You’re immediately forced to shift your helmet from side to side as you keep just far enough away or moving to just beside his strikes. It’s when you feel yourself falling into a pattern that he slips in a drop of one hand and hits your midsection.

He has good power, you quickly realized, and his strikes are accurate even as you do your best to dodge them. As the two of you keep hitting each other, pushing each other’s defenses, you start to notice that you’re falling into a pattern again. It was a curious thing, as though Bones was somehow leading you into certain movements. It was certainly a practiced routine, not altogether different from the drills that all of had been trained in. Yet, it was different enough that he was managing still more strikes as your own seek as much purchase. For whatever reason, however, you can’t shake that he’s setting you up for something. Deciding to trust your instinct, you shove off of him to create some quick space. Unsurprisingly, Bones doesn’t give you much of a chance of it. He closes on you quickly, looking to settle back into the close quarter strikes. At this close of range you won’t have much chance to develop your strikes, but it’s not exactly unsuitable for you. What concerns you more, as you duck slightly below another solid right hand strike, is that Bones seems to slowly be speeding up.

The two of you have been moving at a high pace, with plenty of punches and dodging, and it wasn’t almost as much as you do to keep up. The Lieutenant’s pace is nothing short of exhausting however. In fact, moving from foot to foot as he does makes it seem like he’s not even concerned with minimizing his efforts. Wrax had drilled into you the need to be efficient in your movements, wasted motion was either a liability or an outright path to defeat. You had seen 4582 just moments before tiring himself out in a similar matter, was Bones trying to lure you into the same mistake?

In any case, you need to break free from the situation before it drags on too long…

>Find an opportunity and take him to the ground, that’s the best way to eliminate his advantage.

So far he had been managing the space between you very effectively. Each time you try to close to go for grip or grapple, he quickly deflects or shifts back. Maddeningly, every time you try to back off to gain momentum he repeats the procedure of before by rapidly closing. By keeping you at a medium range, he’s effectively preventing your basic Mandalorian takedowns and holds while keeping your striking from fully developing.

He’s able to accomplish this by his high degree of movement and quick reactions. You had always prided yourself on keeping near peak condition at all times, but the Lieutenant must surely have some kind of conditioning advantage. It made sense, of course, he had practically been fighting nonstop at the Aid Station, whereas you didn’t engage directly in the fight until much later than he had. It spoke to what made him such a challenging opponent to fight. You would have to get him off balance somehow, you decide, disrupt his patterns and then close for the finish.

Bones’ seems to read your slight distraction as an opportunity, throwing a punch straight forward at your visor. You raise an arm to deflect and parry his fist away but, quite surprisingly, he continues forward through the punch instead of retreating and recovering back. It might be an opportunity for you to-

*THUD*

The impact of Bones’ elbow against your helmet jars you severely. You had gotten yourself convinced he was purposefully staying at mid-range and missed him closing in with a massive right elbow. It sends you reeling backwards, shooting your foot out behind you to catch yourself, but you already know what's coming. Taking the initiative, Bones swings his left fist and knocks your helmet back the other direction. The one-two is a devastating combination, but, strangely enough, it was your first real break- You knew the follow up was already coming and exactly what it should be. He would go back to his right hand, bringing it from the bent elbow position to an uppercut. If you could survive that, he would be wide open for the takedown. A’den had taught you the exact move for this.

You lean back quickly, creating just enough space for his fistto pass through the air and miss your head. You then...

The chance was there and you would surely capitalize on it. Reaching around Bones’ waist, you shift quickly behind him and close your grip tightly. As you start to throw your weight back, he senses the danger he’s suddenly in. He wraps one of his legs behind yours and tries to limit your ability to lift him upward. It’s not completely successful and you manage to lift him from the ground. Rather than trying to power through his desperate defense you simply continue with the slam, letting him take your leg with him. The two of you hit the ground a moment later and you’re certain that he’s taken the worst of it.

The focus on your mind now was quickly establishing control while he was on the ground. You would have to be fast or he had the chance to get back to his feet, you knew. By neutralizing his stand-ups kills here, you guaranteed your own natural strengths would determine the rest of the fight. Bones clearly understands that threat and, moving as best he can after the slam, he’s already trying to roll clear on his stomach. You’re able to shift on to his back immediately, gripping underneath him to stop him from escaping but it’s difficult to control. It’s only when he pushes off from the ground with one arm that you have another opening.

Quickly bringing your near leg up, you knock his arm backward and trap it behind your leg. You lock on to his hand, trapping his gauntlet behind your knee. The bulky armor would actually make it harder for him to slip free and would give you a few seconds to strike his head unopposed. The trio of blows you pound into his helmet are fierce and powerful, almost surely winging his bell thoroughly. Each one elicits a sharp growl of pain, growing louder and louder with each hit. It’s the first sign of discomfort you’ve gotten from him. The trap however, isn’t the most stable of positions. Bones is at last able to wrench his hand free and he turns powerfully around, sending an elbow swinging wildly at your helmet. It’s easy enough for you to dodge, but it leaves you open for the follow-up punch from his other arm. You take the hit squarely, another heavy blow that forces you to drop back slightly. It stops you from reapplying the trap, but it doesn’t dislodge you completely.

Finding yourself on top of Bones isn’t quite the best spot to be. In fact, you’re now in the position where Harm had been with 6018. If the two of you got into a similar slugging match, it would be far too close a thing. Worse, Bones might be able to reverse the position on you. The next step needed to be a different tactic to make this a clean finish...

>Let Bones land a few more strikes and then hit him with a submission when he over-commits.
>Rise to your feet, giving you the distance to pound on him while preventing him from doing the same.

>Rise to your feet, giving you the distance to pound on him while preventing him from doing the same.

Bones was far too good of a fighter for you to rely on mistakes, you decide. The safest move was surely the most effective and you use a brief pause between his punches to rise up to your feet quickly. The effect is two fold: It reduces your contact with him, hopefully enough to prevent him from reversing the situation, and it gives you all the distance you need to punch downward at your full strength. You waste no time in delivering a pair of strikes, keeping Bones from getting too creative. The Lieutenant is forced to bring his hands into a close guard. You’re a little surprised when he manages to deflect them, buying himself a little more time to get his bearings. That’s bad, you think to yourself, you would have to break him done quickly.

You redouble your efforts. Slowly but surely his guard starts to open. A sliver of air appears between his arms, it’s enough that you’re able to force your way in between and even land a nearly full-powered hit on his chest. Practically diving him, hitting, and then pushing back off, you’re able to keep his legs down and your position secure. The satisfying impacts seem to fill you with fresh adrenaline, you’re hurting him, you realize. Every hit causes Bones to slide a bit further back. You’re careful enough to track with him, making sure he doesn’t get far enough ahead to raise his legs between you. A few more of these hits and you’ll be able to-

An opening. Big enough to fly a LAAT through. Bones is slow to bring his left arm back up and it’s all the opportunity you need. Striking like lightning with your right, you hammer into his helmet with so much force you actually knock it off of him. As his head is thrown back, you draw back for a follow-up punch. When he turns his head back around, you see his nose bleeding, the blood running down past his mouth.

He’s smiling.

Even though it’s exactly the same face as your brother and you, you can safely say you’ve never seen that expression on any of them. Even the few times you had seen A’den’s face in the midst of training, he had never had such a look on him. It wasn’t anger and it wasn’t specifically happiness, it was much more a look of satisfaction. It’s then you notice his hand on your leg.

Instead of raising it to defend himself, he had dropped it lower to latch on at your ankle. You brace, just as he pulls hard. It takes all you can to stay on your feet as your leg is practically pulled from under you. Your arms flail outward, searching for some balance, but Bones keeps his grip on your leg and he starts to rise. You’re certain he’s about to trip you up.

>Roundhouse kick with your free leg, you’ll make him regret the idea.

The thought that strikes you is a strange one. You knew what the proper answer was, but either your emotions or intuition was telling you to do something unexpected. Bones would certainly make the most of you retreating to ground, he was quick enough to give you trouble if he could bring his full explosive power to bear. Likewise, you wouldn’t be able to use much power to regain control unless he fully committed, which you didn’t think likely. The decision, then, was obvious: you had to take a risk. It could be a painful one, but if it worked…

The Lieutenant was just about set, raising his head up at about chest height. You rock slightly, just enough to put a slight bounce through you and pull slightly on Bone’s grip. He moves ever so slightly forward and you explode from your position, your free leg pushing off from the deck. Your upper body stretches out and backwards, almost level to the ground, as your weight rises in the air and your foot climbs. There’s an odd feeling to your jump, your twisting putting some strain on your ankle and Bone’s grip, but it’s the only way you can develop more force than just your jump. Luckily Bone’s grip falls away as your boot rotates, just in time. As your head starts to drop, the sensation of gravity taking over, your leg continues upward unopposed.

*SMACK*

The flat of your boot catches him right in the cheek.

As you continue to fall, it robs a portion of your strength from the hit, but it’s still enough to snap his head to the side from the impact. You’re able to see him stumble backward, eyes wide in shock and with blood and sweat droplets flying from his face. You lose him a moment later when you hit the ground somewhat awkwardly, but it’s not enough to distract you from quickly rolling and trying to find your opponent.

When you catch sight of Bones again, you see he’s taken a couple steps backwards and fallen straight onto his backside. The rest of the Circle seems equally perplexed and amazed that you had pulled that off. The Lieutenant tries to shake it off as he starts to rise. It may not have knocked him out, but this is the first time you’ve seen him moving in less than a perfectly controlled way. You’ve seriously thrown something out of order for him.

You start to pick yourself up, trying to hurry back to your feet to engage again before he’s sorted himself. As you step forward, not even waiting to raise to your full height, there’s a shout from outside the circle!

“Lieutenant!”

You turn your head, glancing to who was quickly approaching, but careful to not let Bones’ out of view. You see that it’s…

He’s not wearing the top half of his armor or his helmet and is rather undistinguishable to you, nothing about him cues you into who he might be. That he wants to speak with Bones is apparent though.

Bones, for his part, seems entirely focused on you. He doesn’t immediately strike at you when you’re momentarily distracted, perhaps out of sportsmanship or perhaps giving himself another moment or two to straighten out his head. In no time at all he’s back into his stance and seemingly ready and willing to continue, blood and all.

“This Circle,” you say aloud, “Tells us the truth about who we are and what we stand for.”

Bones nods slightly, but keeps his eyes leveled on you.

“One fight here tells us more about each other,” you continue, deciding this was as good a time as any to hammer in your point from earlier, “Than any data file or conversation ever could. The Battle Circle is why my brothers and I survive, because we know what we’re all capable of and that we know we can depend on each other no matter what the situation.”

The interrupting trooper clears his throat.

“Pardon, Lieutenant,” he tries again to get Bones’ attention, “The Captain, he’s requested you immediately… We have-”

“It can wait, trooper,” Bones dismisses him, a hint of stiffness in his speaking, “After the fight.”

“Sir,” the Clone implores, “We have orders!”

That gets your attention. The regiment had barely just been organized, even your squad was interacting for the first time. How could you possibly have orders so soon?

“Who has orders?” the Lieutenant finally asks.

The Trooper answers....

>”Your platoon, Sir. Potential immediate action. I don’t know anything else, he wants to brief you now.” Bones will have to leave, the fight will not be finished now.
>”The regiment has been assigned our General and mission area, they’re holding an all officer meeting.” Bones will stay, he’s willing to be a little late.

“Thank you,” Bones says as politely as he can manage, “I’ll be right there, dismissed.”

The messenger lingers for a moment, perhaps expecting Bones to leave at once. When he sees that the Lieutenant isn’t moving or even getting out of his fighting stance, you see him start to raise a hand as if to say something.

“Dismissed, trooper,” the officer practically growls.

Recognizing he’s far out of his element, the trooper beats a quick retreat. Turning and leaving the circle behind him, your brothers and you are at last left to continue. Indeed, it seems like your entire squad has recovered enough to all be on their feet again. Everyone, including Beast and 5536, is standing under their own power as the eight of them surround the two of you. More importantly, you feel their eyes upon you, watching intently. Even when you had fought 2337, with General Trebor looking on, you hadn’t quite felt the same connection as when you had fought Wrax. This was probably the closest you’ve been to that moment, the Lieutenant facing you bloody and eager to continue. You notice his helmet lying close to your feet.

You reach down and retrieve it, careful to keep your eyes on Bones the whole while. At a minimum be foolish to look away from someone so keen to fight you, a part of you feels it would be disrespectful as well. Taking the helmet into your hand, you toss it back to Bones. He never breaks his gaze, but catches the helmet just the same. He quickly dons it, adjusting the fit. The only sign of his injury now are the few splatters of blood that have dripped and fallen onto his chest, the red joining the blue highlights of his rank.

“I’m certainly learning a lot about you, Sergeant,” he says, securing the helmet into place, “Are you learning about me?”

Nodding slowly, you choose not to speak. It was time to start fighting again.

“Good. Let’s learn a little more,” Bones seems to agree. He settles back into his stance and waits only a pair of heartbeats before surging forward yet again, his speed and quickness just as rapid as when he started. You realize that you’re not likely to match that quickness for much longer…

>You have proven to yourself you can weather his hits, it’s time to shift to power and start searching for the knockout blow.

He speed might be the same, his cardio ability clearly at an incredibly high level, but you know there’s no way he’s as solid as when you started. Bones has taken too many shots for that to be possible. You had taken some of his best shots as well, but you still felt largely stable and focused. In a split second decision you change up your strategy, focusing your defense only on your most critical areas and decline to chase after each of Bones’ strikes.

It’s a rather clever tactic, you think to yourself, this fight had dragged on for some time and it was only natural for Bones to expect you to start losing steam. In truth you were, you had to admit, but hiding that little extra strength might just buy you a large enough chance to land a truly devastating blow or two when he least expected it. As his punches start to pound into the armor of your midsection, you keep tight and close with your guard. He tries a high swing to your head, but it’s an easy deflect with your hands placed as they are. He goes back to the midsection, finding purchase much faster and cueing into your lack of defense there. It seemed that he was buying your ploy. Although each hit takes a little more out of you, you keep braced, holding onto the knowledge that each once is getting you nearer and nearer to the moment…

Bones finally makes his first mistake. The Lieutenant pulls his left arm back after a solid hit but, rather than sending it back in for the easy strike, he raises it higher as his left pushes off you slightly. He’s setting up for a powerful straight punch, to break through your defences headlong. Instantly, you draw back your right hand, low, and shift your left to guard more centrally. He finishes rearing back and plants his foot and twists his entire body to force his fist forward, extending through the motion. As if on a hair trigger and a powerful spring, your own right rockets upward for your target. For the briefest moment you see Bones’ punch on a straight collision course with your visor. It’s only at the last second, when your own fist comes into view, that your arm pushes it ever so slightly off target.

His punch hits the front of your helmet, but it’s far enough to the right that most of the energy doesn’t register. His momentum carries his blow forward and past as your helmet and neck turn with it.

Your punch connects straight below his chin, the power transferring straight into his head and helmet and lurching them backward dramatically. You're not able to see the damage as you’re forced to catch yourself from falling, when you turn your head back you watch as Bones’ arms go wide and he topples over onto the ground. You dive forward ready to hammer another blow if he’s still fighting, but you see as he hits the ground that he’s thoroughly beaten.

Picking yourself up, you place a hand on Bones’ shoulder and try gently shaking him to bring him back to consciousness. The Lieutenant isn’t completely knocked out, but he’s a long way from totally awake. He shakes his head groggily as a low groan escapes from him. Satisfied that he’s not broken too severely, you push yourself up and back to your feet. It’s not long after you’re standing again when Bones is able to roll to his belly and starts picking himself up.

“Well struck… Sergeant,” he manages to say at last, getting to a knee, “You’re a damn good... striker.”

“Good fight, brother,” you offer him back.

He nods.

“Brother.”

You offer a hand and he takes it, letting you help pull him to his feet.

“We’ll have to do that again,” he says, shaking his head again, likely to get his vision into focus.

“Right now?” you ask, more than a little fire in your words.

“Later,” he coughs up a laugh, “I think I remember I have something to do now.”

“Will you… need any help getting there, Lieutenant?”

Bones places a hand on your shoulder, bracing himself for a moment longer. He shakes his head, this time slowly and more deliberately.

“I’ll manage, you wrap things up here, Sergeant,” he orders, “I’ve got a general to meet.”

Perhaps out of stubbornness or sheer tenacity, the Lieutenant is able to will his feet into moving as though he’s walking normally. Your brothers part to let him pass, the blood splatter on his armor the only thing showing he’s been through a bone-shattering fight.

You watch him for a few seconds, ensuring he’s tracking for the exit well enough. Satisfied that he isn’t about to collapse, you turn your attention back to your squad.

“The Battle Circle,” you finish the lesson you’ve been building toward, “Shows us what we’re capable of. As a team, as brothers, you’re capable of even more. You have to be of one mind. Acting with a single focus and determination to win.”

You turn, looking over each of them.

“If any one of you isn’t ready to give your all, if anyone of us isn’t acting as a single unit, we will fail.”

Your visor settles on the pair of Wasp and Grizzly. You hadn’t forgotten about their disrespect…

”It’s because of this, that your actions were unacceptable…”

>Dismiss the squad except these two, their discipline training begins immediately.
>Order the entire squad to begin the extra training. You will all learn and face this as a unit.

This is my last post for now, thank you for playing. We should be able to get this wrapped up tomorrow before this falls off the board, so let's aim for 2000 GMT, troopers!

Those two are going to improve quickly, or I have no doubt the rest of their squad will give them a surprise invite to a few sock parties - orders or no orders.

The squad sounds off with a chorus of affirms. Wasp and Grizzly are noticeably a bit slow, but it’s no matter. You’re about to make sure they all become fast very quickly…

Strategic Update:

Sergeant, your Command is requiring that the 905th be prepared for their formal assignment and commitment to the front, to occur as soon as organization and recovery cycles are complete. There are three levels of organization to confirm before this can occur.

Firstly, on the squad level. CT-2337 has been cleared of wrong-doing in the death of Alpha-96. He will be returned to your squad immediately. The displayed picture shows your current squad.

CT-0027, are there any adjustments you wish to make to your squads colors or insignia? Most are standard, but a few are wearing colors based on their last uni types.

>Switch to all standard. We’re a line unit, not engineers, and that will make us more united.
>Keep them as they are, it’s good to be able to distinguish specialties quickly.
>Other. (Please note any specific ideas or changes to be made to the whole squad or individuals.)
>>
>>4140187
And just to be clear, this is your chance to consider if you want to discuss regimental markings as well. It's still very early in the war, so it likely wouldn't be very big, but distinctive colors or label might not be out of order, for reasons that will be made clear in the next couple decisions.

Wasp and Grizzly's Color scheme but with the same blue as the lieutenant's armor. And for our armor specifically, Our rank insignia in silver on the right (our left) of our breastplate.

We can go in-depth with our regimental markings as the war progresses. No need to rush the timeline. Unrelatedly, I was giving thought as to our name, and given our beskad, maybe we could go by Sword?

As of right now, keeping them as they are has the lead. I'll give it another hour or so now that we're in our regular time.

How do you all feel about Striker?
>>

Checked and it's not bad. Nynir (nee-NEER) is mando'a for strike. Thoughts on that?

Striker works for me honestly

We should definitely decide on a standard color, then pattern based on specialty. But that can wait until we're all fully acquainted.
>>
I suggest we change to a standardized uniform but let everyone do what they want with their right arm and shoulder to show specs
>>

Sergeant Striker. Has a nice ring to it. On the subject of uniform I'll vote
>Keep them as they are, it’s good to be able to distinguish specialties quickly.
But I'd like to still go into a standard colour and personal patterns later on.

Acknowledged, we'll maintain armor colors as they are for the near future, but we'll definitely have the option to add more standardized elements in the future.

Since we're getting close to dropping off the board and I'm not sure when, most of the big decisions I wanted to talk will be at the start of the next episode. For now, I'll leave with one last one.

The 905th's first action will be primarily:

>Offensive: Countering a Separatist force attempting to establish a new strongpoint.
>Defensive: Defending a critical Republic asset from capture and destruction.

Feel free to vote on your preference, continue to talk names or colors, or ask any other questions until this thread is gone. I'll be busy much of tomorrow, so let's aim for the new Episode to be up Tuesday, at around 2300 GMT. Thank you for playing and be sure to check out the archive!

Very welcome, troopers!

As an aside, for those who haven't seen them, the new Clone Wars episodes have been pretty great.
