Somehow the stealth mission has remained stealthy, but not without trouble. Lily's been stabbed and you're now down an arcanist and curse detector. The second bit is the more important one, for you're trying to enter a vault full of magical artifacts, and you have no idea what will be safe to even touch.

Quest rules:
1. All dice rolled are assumed to be D100 unless otherwise stated
2. The first two rolls will be given far greater importance, but additional rolls, good or bad, will affect the outcome. This choice ultimately falls to the Lorekeeper, odd circumstances may cause him to change how the story progresses (a ton of crits for instance)
3. All dice rolls are final
4. Critical fails are considered to be between 1-5, Critical hits are between 95-100. Crits overpower any other roll except another crit. In the rare chance that a crit fail and crit success happen. The Lorekeeper will do something interesting from a story angle. Similarly, rolling 2 of the same number will be considered a MEGA crit, just pray its two high numbers.
5. Near misses may occur, where a rolled number is close to the required threshold, whether over or under. This can have an impact on how the story proceeds. However these are up to the decision of the Lorekeeper.
6. Sometimes there are optional choices one may participate in, these will generally NOT be taken unless there are multiple posters who wish it, assuming there are multiple posters in the thread
7. There are often times choices with multiple parts, each part is counted separately, unless otherwise stated, sometimes rolls will be required before counting the second, third, etc, part
8. There will be “Time Limited” decisions, in which characters may only do a set number of actions, these will be clearly marked. Generally you will only be able to choose one decision per ‘round’.
9. Rules may be subject to change between threads, but will not change during the same thread. These rules are what we will follow for the remainder of this thread.

“Do any of you lot have healing spells?” Henry asked.

“Why the hell would we help you?” The arcanist woman asked.

“Because I’ll slit your throats if you do and I find out you’re lying.” Henry said with no hesitation.

“Fuck, fine. The only one among us who would even have something like that is the man you knocked out.” She said.

Double fuck.

“And the only person with spells that could wake him up is dying from a gut wound.” Sophie said.

“Am I dying?” Lily asked, her eyelids fluttering.

“Fucking hell she doesn’t have that long left if she keeps bleeding like this.” Henry said.

“I’m sure as shit not telling her hubby what happened.” Coliq said.

Henry sighed and rubbed his head as he tried to think of a solution which wouldn’t kill the woman.

“She knew what she was signing up for Henry. If it has a chance to work then go for it, she’s dead otherwise.” Johnny said.
>>
>>4047844
Henry sighed, he didn’t have any other option, he had to try doing something quick and dirty. He grabbed the freshwater converter flask from his belt. He’d taken care to sand off most of the identifying features. Sure it looked a hell of a lot crummier now but that hardly decreased its value to him. He didn’t want anyone figuring out whose it had belonged to, last thing he needed was for someone to recognize the crest. Regardless, it would hopefully be of use.

“Good idea, the alcohol will cleanse the wound.” Johnny said.

“Johnny, that’s the water flask, I already drained my alcohol flask on the way here.” Henry said.

Johnny was quiet for the rest of the operation. Mercifully.

Henry began channeling red mana into his hand. He tried a couple times to get the right amount of power flowing into it. The issue was that with such a low amount of mana, the spell was having trouble catalyzing. He had to focus, really, really hard.

“Oy, isn’t she gonna scream?” Coliq asked.

“Right, Johnny, place these strips of cloth over her mouth, better if they’re wet.” Sophie said, handing Johnny a few pieces of cloth. Dubious at best.

Henry finally managed to get a spell off, and smiled. He cupped the red mana in his hand. All of that practice with red mana over the past half year had really paid off. He would’ve had no chance at doing this otherwise.

“Right this is either gonna sear the wound closed, or sear her.” Henry said.

He plunged the mana into the wound, causing several things to happen. First of which was a horrifying shriek from Lily, that even managed to get through the cloth. That lasted around ten seconds before she fell unconscious, leaving everyone on edge. The second thing was the smell of burning flesh, something Henry was very familiar with. The third was that the flow of blood had stopped. Henry removed his hand to reveal a nasty looking burn. Henry figured it’d be a permanent disfigurement, unless she got it healed as soon as they arrived back in port.
>>
>>4047878

“She’ll probably live, assuming it doesn’t get too infected.” Henry said.

“How’d you even know to do this?” Sophie asked.

“I asked someone about combat medicine once.” Henry replied.

“That lover of yours?” Sophie asked.

“I’m going to ignore that you so easily mock a woman of the abbey.” Johnny said, standing back up and wiping his gloves off.

“Alright so now what the fuck do we do?” Coliq asked. “I say we kill these lot, too dangerous to keep around.”

“Fuck off!” The arcanist lady said.

“I happen to disagree. Our best bet would be to kill one of them, pretend Lily died, then offer a compromise, assuming that these people aren’t after the same thing we are. Lot of items in that vault.” Sophie said.

“Why?” Madison asked, “I say we kill them all, get the vial, and be done with it.”

“So they took the vial?” Sophie asked, causing Madison to take a step back.

“Lovely.” Johnny said.

“Of course the unknowns would cock things up.” Henry said.

Bolt spell upgrade acquired: combat medicine

Drag the people to the secret passage, have Coliq and Sophie guard the prisoners and Lily.
Henry and Johnny goes out a hunting.
If shit starts, they can kill the prisoners.

You changed the op pic again, I never find the threads when you do that.

>>4047889
Isn't it better to have Sophie doing the search? She's invisible. Living are back in the halls now, Henry won't be able to fool any competent person and Johnny's disguise will raise questions as soon as he deviates from a patrol route. Let's not forget all the corpses lying around thanks to madison.

I say that she goes solo, henry examines the secret passage while coliq and Madison get the prisoners in position to be used as hostages if the knife dude shows up. Johnny will pretend to be a dead skeleton or something to ambush him if he does.
>>
>>4050043
Aight, I can see this.
But going solo increases chances of fucking up or getting fucked up.
>>
>>4050062
It does but I don't have a good solution for that unless you want to go loud. There's also the risk of knife guy fucking up and getting caught.

His goal should be to reach his team, which is where all of us are. Sophie could just lie in wait in the corridor outside and shank him once he's moved past the undead armors we have outside.

We don't actually have to /hunt/ him, he will come to us or ruin the entire mission for everyone, in which case having an invisible vanguard is pretty good
>>

Could have sophie be scout while henry follows, so they can more easily dodge patrols.

“Sophie, I think it’d be best if you scouted the area out.” Henry said.

“We’re sitting ducks down here in the meantime.” Madison said.

“We can camp out in the passageway, at least the occupants are unlikely to find us.” Johnny said. “Do you have some more cloth Sophie? I want to make sure our guests can’t call for help.”

“Oy so why the fuck aren’t we in the vault yet?” Coliq asked.

“Because we need the captain’s blood… actually… why don’t I go grab it.” Sophie said. “I’m going to do that, you all sit tight. Should be there and back in ten minutes.”

“Are you going to kill the captain?” Johnny asked.

“Unavoidable.” Sophie replied. “Its not like I even have a theif’s code, trying to do this nonlethally is just going to get us killed at this point.”

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Henry paced around the passage, holding the light rune he’d nabbed from the wall in his hand. The place was claustrophobic, never having been designed to be comfortable. Their prisoners had been hauled inside and Madison was watching the entrance. Coliq was also nervously pacing about, the poor man looked like he was going to wear a hole in the floor. They’d only been waiting for around ten minutes when a pair of figures descended down the stairs and made their way towards the vault. Henry could hear some swearing from one of them and he realized the jig might’ve been up.

Decisions:
1. *call down the two possessed armors*
2. *Rush the pair of them, you’re certain that Madison has a score to settle with one of them.*
3. *wait for them to retreat, hope they don’t check the secret passage.*

Henry waited for a couple seconds then sent a command to the armors to attack the two intruders. He watched as the two clanked by his door. Then he motioned for Madison, Coliq, and Johnny to follow him out. The four managed to get to the vault entrance in time to watch as the damaged armor collapsed into pieces in front of an elderly looking woman, dirty and wearing a patchwork of rags. Extending from her sleeves were what appeared to be pieces of cloth, one of which was clutched around the suit’s animating crystal. The woman carelessly tossed it away after inspecting it. The other figure was busy fighting off the remaining armor. The old woman simply shook her head and used her cloth to ensnare and stop the rampaging armor. A few moment later the thing collapsed and the cloth retracted holding its animating crystal.

“There we are. I was wondering when you’d come out to see me.” The rag covered woman said. “Lucas, I assume its just the two of us left. They must have the keys.”

“Right.” Lucas said, sheathing his remaining dagger and picking up a polearm that one of the suits had dropped.

Henry took a moment to collect himself and took stock of the situation. The elderly woman had some strange magic, likely enchanted equipment. This Lucas fellow was dangerous enough to avoid Madison for a prolonged period of time, and to nearly kill one of his teammates. Coliq palmed a rune and looked to Henry. The man looked awfully nervous.

“They have the blood vial, I’m afraid that would be a bad idea.” Johnny piped up.

Decisions:
1. *cast a spell* (begins combat)
2. *use your weapons* (begins combat)
3. *try to talk to the two attackers* (begins parlay)
4. *retreat back down the hallway* (can you convince Madison and Coliq?)

How do they feel about their colleagues?
We could use them as a bargaining chip.
>>
>>4053679
Johnny disguise himself as a dead/broken skeleton and ambush then when they walk past, focusing on the woman. Coliq puts bomb runes back around the hostages and/or in their mouths to prevent them from talking as much as anything.

Maybe he can hide one inside Johnny's skull? How long will Johnny be out of commission if we do that and blow it up? Maybe one of the fire crackers to lower the risk of destroying the vial.

I forgot what the layout is like, if there is a good place for Henry to attack from unseen have him do that, otherwise he'll simply have draw his dagger and get himself a human shield.
>>
>>4054258
This is just prep btw.

Also make doubly sure that the blue mage can not cast spells to aid the newcomers.

Perhaps let Madison do the hiding and Henry try to parlay. Time it so that they stop walking within optimal reach of Johnny if possible. We want them in a kill zone if talks turn sour.

Let's find out what they came to grab. If we aren't after the same things then let's find a way to cooperate.

1. Have Henry Parlay (and potentially distract the other group)

2. Have one or more people hide (requires Henry to be successful in his distracting attempts, and a decent roll (like above 30) for each person hiding.)

3. Attack them (list who is charging in, what they're doing. I can provide a basic spell list for Coliq and Madison if needed)

Henry sighed and pinched his temple for a moment. They hadn’t attacked him immediately, but it looked like they would if he didn’t speak up. Madison looked like he was going to stare Lucas to death. Henry figured that Lucas had stabbed Lily. If Lily had been someone that Henry had cared about, he’d likely be furious. This wasn’t the case. In fact besides Sophie and Johnny, he really couldn’t give two shits about what happened to these jokers, assuming their deaths didn’t cause his. So, he was more than willing to share the contents of the vault.

“I’m sure we can come to an understanding!” Henry said, throwing his hands up and trying to pass the message onto the others.”

Johnny muttered something under his breath while Madison looked incredulous.

“Well, considering you’ve killed the others how in the hells can we trust you? You aren’t trying to pull the wool over granny’s eyes now are you?” The elderly woman said.

“There is no blood here, if they killed them they did a very good job cleaning it up.” Lucas said, piping up.

“You’ve killed several of our people, why would we even trust you?” The elderly woman asked.

“They’re a little worse for wear, but they’re not dead yet.” Henry said.

No fucking way we are giving up or leverage.

"They are our captives and I have no intention of killing them, or letting the demon fuckers do it. You two however are fair fucking game after stabbing my comrade- you drew first blood and I have no reason to think that you are more useful to me alive."

Just keep talking to buy time for the others, whatever they are doing or planning.

"This is the deal: you tell me what you are after in the vault. If our targets differ we will let you go in after us. If our goals are the same, we make a gentleman's agreement to negotiate once we've all made it out of here."

Not like Sophie can't go behind their group and stab them in the neck if they try shit when we escape and during the negotiation.

What needs to be made abundantly clear is that their allies are safe, but these two are not. If they want to argue about going after us, at most we will accept that one of ours and one of theirs go into the vault together. Our guy being Johnny, of course, for obvious reasons.

“You lot are working for Venser, correct?” Henry asked.

Madison and Coliq looked dumbfounded, and, tellingly, so did Lucas. The old woman however, simply narrowed her eyes.

“I wonder how you’d know about that. But the fact you do and the fact you’re here means you’re not completely uninvolved. So what terms do you want to discuss?”

“First off, we’ll show you were we put them, in that corridor you used. We bound and gagged em so they’d stay quiet but we figured leaving them alive would allow for better negotiating.”

“I stuck a knife in one of you, isn’t that a problem?” Lucas asked.

“Barely knew the bitch, and she hasn’t died yet, so far as I’m concerned its fine.” Henry replied.

“What?!” Madison asked.

“You heard me, I said she’s alive, and will likely survive this, so no harm done. Do you want to fight and die over bullshit?” Henry asked.

“Ey he’s got a point.” Coliq offered.

“Perhaps it could’ve been stated a bit less crassly.” Johnny added.

After a fair bit of wrangling, Henry managed to show both the granny and Lucas that their commrads we’re safe. Once Henry explained to them what the plan was, the arcanist lady began to writhe and curse.

“young lady, the job needs to get done, so quit your whining.” The old lady said.

“Do you have a name by the way?” Henry asked.

“Hrmph, probably for the best you don’t learn it.” She replied.

“Fair.” Henry said.

“So the deal is, we take what we need, and you take what you need, and we don’t bother each other.” Henry said.

Sure he was aware that Sophie had been secretly contracted to get the tideshaper, or whatever the hell it was, but luckily for him, HE hadn’t been order to do jack shit about it. Only to monitor Sophie to make sure she wasn’t a rat. He figured she’d be fairly furious after learning about all this, but fuck her. She deserved it.

“So we have a problem, even if we can get into the vault.” Lucas said. “We need our arcanist to determine if things are cursed.”

Decisions:
1. “No, we’re not letting you untie them till we’re a safe distance away, got it?”
2. “Fine, but only her, and Johnny is going to be the one to untie her.”
3. “Coliq, do you happen to have a bomb rune collar on your person? I want to ensure she doesn’t try to screw us.”

If she can detect curses then she can be the one to pick things up. I presume that Johnny's curse is stronger than anything else that can be cast on him?

If any of the items we came to get are cursed and it can't be broken would you say it is safe to let Johnny carry them, and if Henry controlled undead for the same purpose would that work? Can you curse zombies?

undead can be cursed, although curses that inflict bodily harm (like disease or infection or even something like warts) aren't all that useful. Some curses will inflict those with horrifying visions or nightmares, also completely ineffective against undead. Lastly there are those that reduce a target's luck drastically, making them suffer misfortune. This is effective although quite the waste of time. (There are other less common forms but those are the main three)

“Coliq, do you happen to have a bomb rune collar on your person? I want to ensure she doesn’t try to screw us.” Henry said.

“Oy what are you implin?” Coliq asked.

“I’m asking a question; I don’t care what you do during your own time.” Henry said.

“Yes, I have a couple.” Coliq said. “Her neck’s small so I shouldn’t have to adjust it much.”

“That work for you folk?” Henry asked.

“If you set it off, you’re necks getting cut.” The old lady said.

“If you don’t fuck with us that won’t be a problem.” Henry said.

“So, I want that arcanist to check the goods, ours too.” Henry said.

“And you’d be dumb enough to trust me?” The arcanist asked, rubbing her arms where the rope had dug in.

“I’ve let the lady free.” Johnny said. “So we’re all good to go now.”

“Hopefully Sophie returns soon.” Madison said, whispering into Henry’s ear.

“For all we know she already is, the woman loves playing pranks.” Henry replied, just as quiet.

Lucas stretched a bit while eyeing Henry’s group with suspicion. This all did seem a bit too good to be true, them not having to violently murder each other.
>>
>>4066563
Henry and Coliq both placed their respective keys, which were really just medallions, into two slots on either side of the door. Lucas in turn poured the vial of blood out into a small slot on Coliq’s side. The vault rumbled softly before opening on its own, swinging out and nearly hitting Henry before he realized what was happening. That done, both groups took the chance to look inside.

It was rather disappointing. There wasn’t much in the way of regular valuables. Sure, there were some gold coins and jewels spread about, but most of the stuff was mostly just lightly enchanted junk. He suspected that was intentional.

The arcanist set to work, immediately beelining for an incredibly simple looking metal staff.

“That’s it?” Coliq asked.

“Its about what I expected, most old artifacts tend to be simple yet sturdy things.”

They watched as the woman nearly tipped over after easily lifting the thing over her head.

“Its light?!” The arcanist said.

“Sea metal generally is, girl.” The old lady said.

“The fuck is sea metal?” Coliq asked.

“Ancient stuff, nobody knows how to make it anymore, it doesn’t rust, its super light, and very, very strong. Occasionally some stuff washes up on the beach but it’s usually just junk. It doesn’t melt at all far as I know nor does it yield to a hammer, so it’s shape can’t even be changed. However, its very easy to enchant which is the only reason its at all valuable.” Henry said. He’d dealt in quite a few Sea Metal artifacts over the years, but that staff was enchanted with something FIERCE, the thing was practically glowing due to the enchantments that had been placed upon it. In fact, he worried that the vault had been hiding its presence too well.

“We should probably hurry.” Madison said. “That thing is gonna draw the hosts in I figure.”

“Yeah.” Henry said, holding down panic.

Henry desperately looked around the vault, trying to find the items he needed. Johnny managed to, triumphantly holding up the spyglass they’d been sent to get. The group continued looking for another minute before Henry realized something was very, very wrong. The arcanist had slipped out of the vault. He heard a crunch, and spun around to see a shattered, cloth covered bomb collar being casually tossed aside by the old woman. The cloth buldged in midair before flopping harmlessly to the ground. Henry could hear Coliq swear behind him.

“That’ll teach you to mess with Granny.” She said. Before using her cloth, now turned into large appendages, to grab both of the medallions out from their panels. With that, the vault began to close.
Henry swore under his breath. The mission was utterly fucked, his thoughts immediately turned to survival. He had to escape.

Henry watched in horror as the vault closed, the last thing he saw before the light from the tunnel cut out was the Arcanist smiling and flipping him off. He tripped on something and fell face first onto the ground, bruising his nose. Coliq ran straight into the door and bounced away while Madison began to swear.

“Fucking shit!” Coliq said, fumbling around in the dark. “I have light runes in my pack, fuck fuck fuck how did this even fucking happen!”

“Calm down god damn it.” Henry said, trying to think.

“We’re fucked because of you!” Madison said.

Henry wondered how he’d die today, from the demonhosts, from running out of air if the vault proved airtight, from thirst, or from Madison wringing his neck.

“Calm down, Sophie’s still outside, she might be able to do something.” Henry said, not believing a word of it.

“Oh, right, sure.” Coliq said.

“Henry, she doesn’t even know we entered the vault.” Johnny reminded him, the man had already begun to look for a way out.

“Fuck.” Henry said. “FUCK!”

“And Lily is still out there you fucking moron!” Madison roared. “THEY’RE GOING TO KILL HER!”

“Or take her captive.” Johnny offered. “Getting mad won’t get us out of this vault.”

“There, got the feckin light.” Coliq said, holding up a light rune and passing out more to the others.

Henry sighed, he was beginning to panic, he couldn’t do that, he’d gotten out of worse spots.

“Henry, listen to me.” Johnny said. “There are vents here. Not nearly big enough for any of us to crawl through, not even me. But we won’t suffocate it seems.”

“Fuck my life.” Coliq said. “If them demons open the door we’re fucked!”

“If that happens, I want all of your bomb runes, Coliq, I’m gonna take at least one of those fucks out with me.” Madison said, sounding unreasonably cold. He glared at Henry.

The murderous intent wasn’t helping.

since Johnny is more knowledgeable about things, have him examine the mechanism for the door, if it's visible.

“Johnny, go look at the locking mechanism, tell me if you see any weaknesses.” Henry said, waving the skeleton away.

“I should have you know, sir, that I have no ability when it comes to understanding the structural integrity of a vault.” Johnny replied. “I was never, and have never been, a locksmith.”

Henry grimaced; Johnny only called him sir when he was annoyed.

“Coliq, try to find a weakpoint on the door.”

“Eh, I’ll try but the entire vault is steel plated, must’ve cost a fortune to make this. I’d imagine everything beyond the steel is either stone or dirt. Not to mention blasting it might make the castle-

“Just look, keep yourself busy.” Henry said, beginning to carefully comb through the various artifacts and tools laying around.

“Henry, what about that?” Madison asked, pointing to a massive stone disc leaving against the back wall of the vault.

“Is that a fucking mortar rune?” Henry asked. “Didn’t even think the church bothered making these anymore.”

“They didn’t, stopped making em after the last vampiric war, that thing’s gotta be even older.” Coliq replied.

“Why’d they stop making them?” Madison asked.

“They weren’t worth the cost, and there was a severe lack of red mana mages after the war concluded.” Johnny said. “No point creating a weapon if you don’t have the people to use it properly.”

Decisions:
1. get nobody’s help (+1 ???, results in the vault automatically opening)(you know you want to)
2. Go with the mortar rune
3. Try to cut through the vault’s hinges

“Right, stand clear, about to do something very stupid.” Henry decided.

“You ain’t gonna fire that thing off in here are ya?” Coliq asked. “Cause the impact would turn us into hamburger.”

“No, its plan B.” Henry said, concentrating and conjuring lightning talons from his hands.”

“Holy shit!” Coliq said, jumping back and tripping.

“What the hell?” Madison asked. “You’re that good of a red mage?”

Henry had never tried cutting through steel like this before, he had no idea if this would even work, but he had to try. So was a bit of trepidation, he applied the bolt to the metal and was amazed as bit by bit the metal melted off and pooled on the ground, the splatters barely missing Henry as he worked. He made two cuts on the first hinge and stood back as the freed chunk of metal clanged to the floor. He then began working on the second, making sure his mana usage didn’t spike. He thought of Rosa, Charles, and everyone else, he couldn’t die here.

It had only taken a few minutes but by the time he was done, Henry was tapped.

“Holy shit he cut through em.” Coliq said. “We should be able to just kick the door open from here.”

“Isn’t there a lock?” Henry asked.

“Nope, thing was magically sealed, your… whatever the fuck that was, just fried most of the enchantments on the vault, you got something real scary there. Fuck if I’d known it could’ve done that I’d have just told Sophie to have you cut into here, but then again she’d have no reason to bring me along.”

“So what now?” Johnny asked. “The door seems to have come loose but it still is a massive chunk of metal.

“We push.” Madison said.
“Or I could just use some runes to blast it open.” Coliq said. “Y’know, less dangerous!”

“I refuse to believe that anything your hands has touched can be less dangerous than anything.” Johnny retorted.
Madison prodded the two chunks of hinge that were cooling on the floor with his sword. The edges were still red hot.

“Right, the hinges are off, lets push this fucking door away.” Henry said.

“Of course sir.” Johnny replied.

Coliq nodded affirmation while Madison simply pushed at the door.

The group took a couple test attempts to see if it could actually be done, and amazingly the four of them were just strong enough to budge the door completely off its hinges. They began the difficult task of pushing the door clear the frame. Just as the first specks of rune light began poking through the cracks between the door and the vault itself, the door began to tip away from the group.

The thing had been magically held in place, there wasn’t an actual locking mechanism, and so, the heavy vault door tipped forwards and slammed into the ground, generating a not insubstantial amount of noise.

“Oh fuck.” Coliq said.

“We need to hurry.” Johnny stated. “I imagine we have a couple of minutes before they send someone to check.”
“They’re going to send everyone.” Madison muttered.

Henry immediately scurried out of the vault, hopping onto and over the fallen door and back down the hallway. He skidded to a stop next to the crumpled body of Lily. The door to the secret passage had been properly closed up and from what Henry could tell there was no way to open it from this side. They’d have to leg it back to the air rune boat.

“I’ll carry her.” Madison said. “You lot would just leave her to die at first opportunity.” Madison growled.

“Guilty, but can you really blame me?” Coliq said. “Really though we need to get the fuck out of here.”

“I’m surprised they didn’t cut her throat.” Henry said.

“Likely leaving her to be discovered by the guards. They didn’t seem the type to become queezy.” Johnny said.

“Coliq, can you rig up the mortar to go off?” Henry said.

“What?!”

“Like in thirty minutes or so, give it a delayed timer.”

“Yeah… but why?” Coliq said.

“Because fuck these people.” Henry said.

“Finally something we can agree on.” Madison said.

“I’ll need like… ten red mana.” Coliq said. “I’m only gonna provide, like, three?”

“I’ll give five, I want this place burned to the ground.” Madison said.

“Fine, I’ll give the remainder, we’re using batteries, right?” Henry asked.

“Yeah, give me a minute to set it up. Coliq muttered, muttering complaints under his breath.

“I hope this is worth the time.” Johnny said.

“Killing these monsters always is.” Madison replied.

“Johnny, I want you to wait a bit for Lily, worst comes to worse I want you to make your way out and head down to the coast. I’ll give you more instructions if we have trouble finding you.

“If you insist.” Johnny said. “I do hope that reprobate Ivy doesn’t realize I’m not under her control.”

“We need to move.” Madison said, just as Coliq wrapped up his preparations.

“Right, we don’t want to be anywhere near this thing when it goes off.” Coliq said, wiping the gathering sweat off his forehead.

Henry gazed at the massive stone disc that had been laid out on the floor outside the vault. He’d figured that having it fire straight up into the stone ceiling would do more damage. He didn’t want the vault to shield the castle’s foundations from the impact.

“Sir. I’ve grabbed a few things from the vault. The arcanist touched each of these objects so I assumed they weren’t cursed. I’m going bring them back to the boat so this trip wouldn’t have been as much a waste of our time.” Johnny said.

“That’s unlike you.” Henry replied.

“Hardly, it deprives these reprobates of magical artifacts. If I could manage, I’d take all of them, or fire the mortar into the vault itself.”

“Oy that would’ve been a better idea.” Coliq said.

“No time to change the plan, lets go.” Henry said.

Madison took point while Henry and Coliq followed closely behind. Coliq had tried to stay far back but both Madison and Henry had threatened him enough that the small rodent of a man had decided that he was actually much safer closer to the front.

They had hardly left the vault when the trio ran face to face with a couple of bewildered looking guards. Madison didn’t waste any time and immediately decapitated one of them, the poor bastard hadn’t even had time to put a helmet on.

Henry didn’t even slow down as he approached the man, only noticing a couple of raggedy looking horns on the man’s head. He simply drew his blade and lopped off the man’s head, only slowing down to regain his balance.

“Oy that fucker had horns!” Coliq said.

“Corrupted bloodline, its what happens when you don’t get fresh blood in a demon cult.” Henry said.

“Van Graf’s keep an eye on their bloodline just as much as any noble.” Madison said.

“Guess they have an overabundance of third and forth sons then.” Henry said, moving his blade around to try and get some of the blood off.

The trio continued down a couple of hallways, managing to either avoid or kill off the guards on their way to the exit tunnel. Luckily it seemed the majority of the guards were drunk or tired, based on how their movements were sloppy as all hell. The undead guards on the otherhand were easily cast aside by Henry.

He was genuinely surprised when he began descending the steps into the prison and he hadn’t met any real trouble. Made him worried.

“Almost there lads.” Coliq said, grabbing a couple of runes and throwing them down on the steps.

“Mines?” Madison asked. “Won’t Sophie get caught in them?”

“She doesn’t trigger traps, its like she isn’t even there. Only our enemies are going to get caught in those.” Henry explained.

“Ah.” Madison said.

The group passed cells containing still living prisoners. Madison slowed his pace while looking at them. Henry worried the man would try and do something stupid, but thankfully he picked up the pace and caught up with them.

“No time to give mercy killings. God forgive me.” Madison said.

“The only mercy I want is to escape quietly.” Coliq said.

The group stormed through the catacombs, Henry using around a dozen mana lines to corral undead out of their way. By the time they reached the sewer he was winded from the exertion. Sure, he wasn’t using up a lot of black mana but it was still tiring.

The group continued down the pipe. The only noise the group made was Coliq grumbling about having to carry Lily. Henry had explained it was either that or taking point, but the man hadn’t stopped grumbling. It was probably just his way. As the group rounded a corner, Madison backed up suddenly and motioned to wait.

“Captain said she fled down here.” One voice called out.

“Why the fuck do we have to do this shit, couldn’t the boss have tracked her? He found her in the first place.” A second said

“He can’t smell her down here, and I’d stop talking about him like that, its bad for your health.” The other said. The first voice said

“Well I’m not getting any fucking sleep tonight. Fucking alarm siren.” The second voice said.

“Come on, we need to find the blood trail.” First voice said.

“Ugh, you’ve been gunning for that promotion for months.” The second voice replied.

“Can’t believe Ivy didn’t rile her undead up to track this fucker. I can’t believe anyone could slip in here like that.” The first voice asked.

“You really think that fuck up wouldn’t just make things worse?” The second voice said.

It was at that point that Madison stepped around the corner and stabbed one of them in the head. While the remaining survivor attempted to respond, Madison flung a bolt spell at the man, frying him.

“Oy fucking hell, don’t do that with all this water around.” Coliq said, nonplussed.

“Hrmph.” Madison said.

Henry sighed. Sophie was likely injured then. The woman had underestimated the demonhost in charge here. He actually found that he was concerned for her, a foolish notion. He stealthily grabbed up his contract and wrote a little message to Johnny. Hopefully the skeleton would manage to join them. He quickly placed the contract back into ‘storage’ before either Coliq or Madison noticed.
>>
>>4079212
“Sophie’s down here, I think they were talking about her.” Madison said.

“I hope she ain’t tryin ta pull a runner on us.” Coliq said.

“If she has, and I survive this, she’s dead.” Henry said.

The group continued onward, past the formerly blocked section of pipe, past a couple more guard patrols, and finally towards the original entrance that they’d used. Henry noticed a small trail of blood on the pipes. He hoped Sophie hadn’t bought it. At least he’d done his job correctly, he knew for a fact Sophie wasn’t involved with Venser. That did bring up the question of who exactly she was aligned with, but Henry could think on that later, preferably with some alcohol.

Henry walked out into the cool night air and found several things had changed. First of all, there was a loud alarm wailing into the night. Second off, there were several searchlights going around covering large parts of the surrounding area in a bright glow. Thirdly, there were birds flying about, quite a few of them. Henry suspected they were either undead scouts or were bond to owners through pagan magic. The Van Graf’s were known to make use of necromancy, demonic magic, and pagan rituals. Their extended family was a hot pot of bad news.

The boat, miraculously, was still there. Henry quickly stepped aboard and found Sophie, partially bandaged, and only partially conscious. The woman had suffered a nasty wound along her arm, but from what Henry could tell it had already stopped bleeding, which was a bit odd. The woman’s breaths were pained, but she didn’t seem to be in nearly as fragile a state as Lily had been. The woman was naked beyond the bandages, but due to her particular affliction her modesty was perfectly intact. Henry realized that he’d forgotten to bring her clothing back. He didn’t really care, but he figured Johnny would remember to bring her kit back.

“Coliq, how much time do we have left on that mortar.” Henry asked.

“Bout fifteen or so minutes, I figure.” Coliq said. “Give or take a minute or two.”

Decisions:
1. *get the boat started up* (will allow you to immediately leave)
2. *try to wake Sophie up* (Will use up twenty seconds of time)

Henry decided that he needed Sophie conscious, mostly so he could have someone to yell at when they got back to the boat, but also so he could rely on her advice. This had been her plan after all. Hopefully she had some contingencies. So without an ounce of ceremony, he slapped the woman until she was throttled awake.

“Ugh, my head.” Sophie said.

“Wakey wakey eggs and bakey.” Henry said.

“We’re still at the castle, everythings gone to shit, but they haven’t found us yet. Johnny’s on the way, then we’re fucking off.” Henry said.

“Did you get the items?” Sophie asked.

“I managed to get one, the telescope.” Henry said.

“Well at least I’ll manage to salvage some of my pride.” Sophie said, before coughing a couple of times.

“Oy you alright?” Coliq asked.

“Peachy.” Sophie replied.

“There was another group, they took some sort of staff.” Madison said.

“What?!” Sophie asked. The boat rocked suddenly as Sophie leapt up, then a crash as the woman fell back down.

“Yeah, we can talk about it later, but I assume they’ve already left at this point, Sophie. I’m sure your actual employers are going to be fucking thrilled.”

Sophie was quiet for a moment or two before she managed to regain her composure. “I wondered why you were suddenly so willing to come with.” Sophie said. “Fucking hell Henry.”

“Oh don’t fucking hell me, you’d have done the same in a fucking heartbeat.” Henry said.

“No I wouldn’t have.” Sophie said. The woman sounded hurt by the implication.

“Look, this is all well and good but those lights are gonna sweep down here eventually.” Madison said. “We need to leave, you two can have a nice long talk back on the boat, cut each others throat’s for all I care. But I’m getting Lily to an actual healer.”

“We’re waiting three minutes, then we’re leaving.” Henry said, authoritatively.

“Bullshit.” Coliq said. “We need to leave now.”

“If you try that I’ll gut you myself Coliq.” Henry replied. “We’re waiting for Johnny. I will NOT let him fall into their hands and I’m not gonna chance him hiking through the marsh.”

“You’re going to get us all killed.” Madison said.

“Let the man have his skeleton. He needs it to stay sane.” Sophie said. “Side’s he’d piss and moan… ugh… on the way back.”

The group waited, and Johnny turned up within less than two minutes. The boat was started, and the group began to depart. Henry took the helm and began to quietly pilot the boat through the beams of light. Sophie managed to get a silence and illusion spell off, but Henry still worried that the demonhost would manage to get a good look at them.

The group continued onwards for a little bit, managing to avoid the obvious searchlights and the couple of patrol boats that had managed to get on the scene. Henry began to feel something he’d hadn’t felt in years creep up into the pit of his stomach. They’d been seen, but by who?

A bolt of black mana impacted Johnny and sent the skeleton sprawling to the floor of the boat. The entire thing began to rock back and forth. Johnny sprang back up, unharmed for obvious reasons.

“Oh bother.” The skeleton said, looking up into the night sky. “Sir, you’d better use as much power as that rune has, we need to leave.”

“I know!” Henry screamed, trying to work the dials built into the air rune boat. But it was no use, the damned thing had barely been maintained and the dials had mostly rusted up.

A moment later a dark figure swooped down and raked the side of the boat with a sword. A trickle of water began to leak in. Coliq managed to hurl a bomb rune at the figure but it merely swerved to the side and easily avoided the explosion. A moment later a flare rune was fired up into the sky, illuminating the swampland. Henry swore again as the illusion was dispelled by the sudden burst of light. The silence spell was also dropped soon after.

“Well, If I get a swipe at him I suppose it won’t be too bad a way to die.” Madison grimly stated.

“He’s got a fear aura, and a pain aura too, I think.” Henry said.

Rolled 45 (1d100)

If this guy is a flier with mobility what we need to do is remove that advantage... But how?

I don't see many options beyond getting lucky with the dice trying to zipzap them out of the air.

If the flight is magical, perhaps a dispel will work. If not we know that we can use memory scatter offensively. Turning them into a drooling retard at very hihg speds could be fun to watch

keep in mind you have allies on the boat. Utilize them if you want to survive this battle.

We're out of red, but coliq does have bomb runes.
And we may have a sling to chunk them at him.
So we could so something like a AA and blast him out of the air. Might even be able to charge them with blue mana to give it a little blue concussive blast

Several years prior:

Duncan cursed up a storm as the boat ground to a halt on a shoal. Henry and Johnny had gone with him on a smuggling run as a bodyguard, to make sure nobody tried to steal the opium the man had in the lower cargo hold of his paddleboat. Henry hadn’t actually worked with the man before but had heard that he paid on time and didn’t ask for much more than basic competence. However, the engine had given out midway through and had left them stranded on the side of the river just within spitting distance of Avignon. They all knew that if left like this, a curious Cathar would come to investigate and see if they needed assistance, which they all really didn’t need.

“Oy, boy.” Duncan said. “Want to learn an old sailors’ trick?”

“Yeah?” Henry asked. He was still at the age where he could be mistaken for a child, even if he had turned fifteen only a month prior.

“Look at the engine here, see how the rune is acting funny?” Duncan said.

“Yeah? Looks like the mana flow is all twisted up, guess you’ll have to replace the rune right?”

“Ha, like I’d want to spend the money on that, no no, I’m going to teach you a trick.” Duncan said, blue mana beginning to spin out from his hand.

Henry watched as the man used strands of blue mana to slowly get the rune back into working order. He watched as the man basically pulled strands of mana out of the rune’s outer mana frame, the part of the rune that transferred mana about. Under regular circumstances, a person would receive nasty burns attempting to do this without proper equipment, however the blue mana served as a shield against this. The man was in essence directly manipulating the rune via blue mana, quite the trick. Henry wondered where he’d learned it from.

Once Duncan had finished around twenty minutes had passed. Henry had learned a lot, but had noticed the man had been doing things half assed. His technique was sound but his understanding of the underlying magic was piss poor. Henry could’ve done just as good of a job in a third of the time. But he knew better than to say this out loud.

“So, what do you think?” Duncan said, kicking the engine and laughing when the paddle started back up.

“I think I can put this to good use.” Henry replied. “Thank you.”

“Its nice to see you making friends, Henry.” Johnny added.

Henry began releasing multiple strands of blue mana directly into the wind rune, the controls may have been junk but the rune itself worked perfectly. He had to directly control the thing. It would likely fry the rune when they stopped but that would be Sophie’s problem. If they survived, she’d be getting off easy.

The boat lurched to life and began racing off, nearly throwing Henry overboard. He maneuvered the boat past a couple of skiffs, past a series of run-down docks, and then out into the marsh itself. He chanced a look back and saw that the Demon host was pursuing them, practically glowing with black mana. Behind him three boats with troops in them. Although their boat seemed to be rapidly outpacing them.

Overclocking the rune had done the trick on that count.

Henry ducked as a lance of black mana impacted the water to their left and sent up a plume of fresh water. They needed to move.

Decisions:
1. *order the others* (write in)
2. *break for open water and pray that you can hide in the mist*
3. *head further into the marsh to prevent the boats from following you. You’ll only have to deal with the demon*
4. *fire off the angelic flare rune and hope there is a flight nearby. Or at the very least hope that your pursuer is intimidated*
5. *try to find a place with a lot of dead bodies, you know the Van Grafs carry out executions deeper in the swamp.* (will make it harder to escape from your pursuers outright but will potentially give you a better chance to fight them off)
6. (write in)

I'll need to know more of what the others can actually do, what equipment and how many items they've got to make any informed decision here.

What is the marsh like? Peat bog? Mangrove? Is it open or full of trees and shit?
>>
>>4089179
Agreed
>>
>>4089179
mangrove mainly, lots of trees with small islands dotted around.

will not be posting much due to a test I need to study for. I'll try and have something by tonight but I can't make promises.
