>You are Son Peppa, Son Gohan, and Izumi Mahogany, children of Earth’s heroes, Maple, Goku, Acer, and Chi-chi

Last time, on Dragon Ball Tuffle Quest Kai! As Gohan continues his training in the afterlife, encountering Princess Snake and winning a race against her, earning a favor from her. Gohan then helped out Bardock and Gine in Hell, showing them some skills he learned from Phantasma, in addition to getting something to help Launch. Meanwhile, Peppa spent time training with Raditz, helping her cousin Daikon finally achieve Super Saiyan and then trying to utilize a power beyond Super Saiyan 2, without trying to transform into 3, then learning a bit about her grandparents. Lastly, Izzy spent time with Peppa, Videl, and Pantea doing some “research” into the Mahou form… and gained an appreciation for a new series in the process. With Summer starting to wind down and a return to classes fast approaching, what awaits for the trio next? Good luck, Peppa! Good luck, Izzy! Good luck, Gohan!

“Not bad, Tarble!” dad praises, blocking another blow from Vegeta’s brother. “You’re even further ahead of where you were just a few days ago.”

Panting, he takes a couple steps back. “Y-you really think so?”

“Yeah! Your form’s really improving.” dad compliments, placing his hands on his hips. “You look pretty tired though. Ready to take a break?”

He laughs softly and nods, the two heading over to you and mom. Maple smiles proudly. “You know, it’s not just him that I see improving. You’ve been really picking up the slack, monkey boy.” Her eyes go back down to the tome of Magic she’s been reading from, giving it a pat. “Guess I’ll have to start learning even more new tricks.”

She says that, but her biggest focus recently is looking over a way to cure Launch’s Delayed Onset Ki Disorder. She got a major breakthrough thanks to Gohan, him getting a special fruit grown for King Yemma that could help with a cure. And you yourself have been looking into some of the places Izzy wants to go to investigate for Magical artifacts. There’s a prairie down south, one that apparently Mr. Yajirobe is familiar with, that was on her list, in addition to a place in the Land of Korin, and lastly one in Fukurou Forest. Sticking to Earth initially might be easier, plus, this’ll apparently be one of the last things Sachie and Zarid will be around for before they have to return.

At the same time, though, Cocoa and Lime have been trying to get together a little beach time with you and some other friends. Summer IS starting to wind down, and you’ve been wanting to spend at least a little of it just having some fun like that. Besides, it’s just a beach day, shouldn’t be too much. Then again, you don’t want to start getting rusty, so you really should pick up on training again. Getting this new variant of Super Saiyan 2 under control is just the tip of the iceberg, and you know Gohan isn’t just sitting back and relaxing in the afterlife, from the sound of things. Gotta get your butt in gear soon!

So, you decide to…

>A. Help mom and Launch out a bit today
>B. Go with Izzy on her first little adventure (this will result in a co-op situation)
>C. Spend some time with Cocoa, Lime, and a few more friends on a little beach trip!
>D. Get back to work training, can’t slack off now!

You decide to make the most of what remains of your Summer, and head on to a beach trip with Cocoa, Lime, and a couple other friends, getting Videl and Pantea to tag along. The group of you head to a fairly calm little set of islands near Kame House, where Krillin and Lazuli live. Not super busy, not completely unknown, but just out of the way enough to be for you all to have a nice time there.

You get to show off the swimsuit you bought before summer started, Cocoa in an orange and yellow two-piece and bringing her goggles with, Lime going for a black, slightly high-cut one-piece (and a large straw hat), while Videl and Pantea have matching sets of black tops and swim trunks, Videl’s having a white trim while Pantea’s having a purple one. A few beach chairs set up, a cooler with some nice fresh drinks and even some watermelons, aaaaand a volleyball net with accompanying volleyballs, Videl eager to give that a try.

“So, Izzy’s on another treasure hunt, huh?” Lime asks you, stretching a little before laying back down in the beach chair. “Didn’t wanna go with?”

“I might, but right now I wanna get in just a little beach time while I still can.” you tell her, closing your eyes as the sun overhead warms your skin.

“Is that all you wanted?~” Cocoa asks teasingly.

Blushing a little, you smile. “Didn’t say that, did I?” Eyes still closed, you add, “Besides, mom’s pretty good on all she needs to help Mrs. Launch, and dad’s still training with his student. I wanna spend some time with my friends.”

“Hey, come on, you dorks gonna lay around all day?” Videl asks, twirling the volleyball on her finger before tapping it up into the air and catching it.

Lime raises her hat. “Videl no offense but you are VERY competitive. Any of us beside Peppa give it a try, you might break something.”

She pouts. “Will not.” A large splash behind her causes her to flinch, leading to her backing away. Pantea laughs. “Hey!” Videl shouts out.

“Hey yourself, the water’s plenty warm.” Pantea comments. “Come on, take a swim for a bit!”

You hop to your feet. “Know what? Swim sounds nice! Who all wants to head in?”

Lime fakes a pout. “I mean just settled in but fiiiiine, I’ll join.”

“Swim sounds nice.” Cocoa adds, walking along with you.

Outnumbered, Videl sighs and puts the volleyball down. “All right, all right, fine.”

Pantea gives a victorious little laugh. “Hahaa! Knew you’d cave into pressure eventually~” A large splash of water hits her by surprise. “…I should have seen that coming.”

“But you didn’t.” Videl replies, smirking. “Either that of you didn’t care enough to dodge. Repeat of the tournament.”

”Okay HEY.” Pantea grumbles out. “Rude.”

Lime just dives in and starts swimming out a bit, you and Cocoa heading into waist-deep water… well, waist-deep for her, up to your bellybutton. Cocoa brings her hand to her face, trying to stop herself from giggling. “Yeah yeah I know.” you mumble.

“I mean, it’s not that bad. You get to be cute and small quite a bit longer.” she tells you. You blush a little. Cocoa pokes your forehead. “And come on, one of the few things I’ve got over you, you’ve got a lot else going for you. Besides, not like you’re done growing.” She heads out a little deeper, the waves out further starting to pick up a little.

“You’re both gonna make me gag at this rate!” Lime calls out. As one of the waves approach her, she starts to ride along it. Videl and Pantea keep up their little splash fight, it starting to get a little close to you and Cocoa.

As Cocoa heads out a bit more, you ready your tail under the water, aaaand… aha! You fling it up quickly and splash some water at your girlfriend. “Hey you! No getting away!”

“Ahh! Peppaaaa!” Cocoa laughs, trying to shield herself from the splash. “Why you…!” She splashes back at you, allowing you to catch up, the two of you returning “fire” at one another just as Pantea and Videl escalate their own splash fight.

“DOOOOORKS!” Lime calls out, riding the wave past all of you, the water pulling you and Cocoa up but managing to splash against Videl and Pantea. Lime excitedly starts to head back out, chased by the pair of them, you and Cocoa heading out deeper as well. “Stop actin’ all lovey-dovey!” she faux complains.

As you and your girlfriend finally get far enough out that it’s a good body length or so from surface to seabed, you get an idea. “Heeeey. You know what. I bet… I could make a sandcastle underwater.”

Cocoa laughs. “Pft. What? How? Why?”

“Magic! Just watch me!” you declare, diving down deeper. As you do, though, you think to sense out for any large animals you might be disturbing. There do seem to be a few fish staying further away from the lot of you, though some that aren’t all that concerned. Maybe a little annoyed, but unconcerned. Hmm… strangely, there do seem to be a few Ki signatures that aren’t exactly matching the usual surroundings.

Gonna… keep an eye on that. But first, sandcastle! Hmm… how DO you build a sandcastle underwater? Hydrophobic sand, somehow? …Waaaait. Wait. You got it! You use the Clothes Beam to build a little “structure” to pile sand around, and then use some Wind Magic to start pulling sand around the structure, making sure it piles up nice and neatly. Few pats here and there to make sure it all piles on nice and neat… aha! Perfect!

You poke your head up for some air for a brief moment. “There ya go, one underwater sandcastle!”

Cocoa shakes her head, running her fingers through her hair as she swims in place. “You still didn’t answer ‘why.’”

“Because it was fun.” you reply, floating on your back. Huh. Starting to sense something.

“Yeah well-” Cocoa seems to freeze. “…Peppa. PEPPA. SHARK!” She starts to move away frantically.

You look back. A large fin pokes out of the ocean… and then starts to get bigger. And bigger. And… way bigger than a normal shark. And strangely, you see some spikes along the length of its body. Wow, strange shar- A shiver jolts down your spine to the very tip of your tail. You… see something silvery along the animal’s body. You blink. It moves closer, but starts to head underwater.

Okay. Okay calm down Peppa. Calm down. It can’t. Can’t be that. You… you and Vegeta beat ‘em. Calm down. Calm down calm down calm down. It’s just a normal shark. Just a normal, absurdly large shark. Just… just…

“PEPPA!” Cocoa yells to you.

You snap out of it and dodge out of the way as the massive maw of the shark nearly closes around you, the massive animal breaching the water. Before it has time to react, you’ve vanished from its view. Your arms end up around the shark’s tail, yanking it up far into the air before it ends up back in the water. Eyes finally fix around the silvery patch you saw before…

It’s some jagged metal embedded in its side. The shark snaps its jaws in a panic. Your grip loosens just a bit. Enough to show you’re not trying to hurt it. Then, you raise your hand, reaching out via telekinesis to grab the metal poking into the side of the shark, yanking it out. Its snapping jaws stop moving as frantically.

You pull the metal closer. The… remains of a ship. Maybe something it ran into thinking it was prey. Mh. Closing your eyes, you breathe out. “So you’re not a very NICE shark, but you’re at least not… one of those.”

>A. Fly it away from here, to Monster Island. It’s just an animal, one that should be kept away from people, but not hurt further
>B. Mmmhh… kind of a big wound there. Maybe ask teach if she can heal it?

It might be a mean shark, but it’s still just a shark. You dip it back down in the water so it can breathe, then pull it out and fly towards Monster Island, explaining to Lapis the situation telepathically. All the while, you carry the metal along via telekinesis, dipping the shark in the water every now and then so it can get some water over its gills. Finally you’re close enough that you can toss the shark safely into the sea, far away from any people.

‘So wait, what exactly does the metal look like? Is there a ship name on it?’ he asks before you leave.

You group the metal overhead and look closely. ‘No full name, but what’s there seems to show this chunk of a big, red R.’

‘Ominous. Is that all? Just the one letter?’

‘Yeah, sorry. Big ship from the looks of it. You’d think someone would’ve heard of something before now.’ You place your hand on it. Yeah. Just… normal metal.

You tap your fist against it. It clangs, and that’s about it.

Okay! Okay. Normal metal. Chunk of a ship. Ugh. Relax, Peppa. You teleport back to everyone, then set the metal down on the sandy shore. Your friends gather around it. Lime’s the first to speak. “…So what is it?”

Pantea leans in closer. “Not familiar with any ships like this. We’d need to get more information on it, more samples of what it once was.”

“Doesn’t look especially old.” Videl points out. “Like, it’s got very little rust on it. Some, but very little.”

As everyone looks over the metal, you feel Cocoa’s hand on your wrist, grabbing gently. Hesitantly, she asks you, “…Peppa, are you okay?”

The concerned look on her face doesn’t fade, but she does appreciate the question. “Well, gave me a bit of a scare. But I think I’ll manage. What about you?”

You sigh loudly. You should… definitely explain it what happened. “It wasn’t so much that I froze up as… as I was trying to shake it off, really. I… this chunk of metal that was embedded in the shark’s skin gave me some flashbacks to… to Baby.”

You feel Cocoa’s hand on your wrist squeeze a little tighter. Videl and Pantea gain apologetic looks. Lime seems confused, and is the first to speak. “…But you beat him, right?”

“Yes. Yes we did. But I’d thought I did it before, and yet, he came back to threaten the Earth.” You look down. “…I don’t know if I’m really over it yet, I guess.”

Videl walks over and places her hand on your shoulder. “It’s okay. Heh, if it helps, it’s taken quite a while for me to stop feeling as on-edge about all of it.”

“Some more relaxation like this is probably gonna help with that too.” Cocoa adds.

“At the very least we’ve got a bit of a mystery here.” Pantea comments, tapping her fist against the metal. “Even if this isn’t from a recent incident, this still is something unusual.”

“So, should we ask around, go back in and search, or what?” Lime asks. “Might be some sunken treasure, you know.”

You place your hand on Cocoa’s. “I’m… sorry again for kinda freezing up like that. I… really should’ve been more proactive.”

She pokes your cheek with her free hand. “It’s understandable. You still saved the day. Yet again.” Cocoa sticks out her tongue.

“Still. More proactive!” You let go and raise a fist into the air. “I’m gonna head back in and check on the direction the shark came from.”

“All right, I’m gonna try to gather some info on this, maybe see if we can get a lead.” Videl states, heading back to the slab of metal.

Cocoa goes along with you, still holding your wrist, when you stop, then double back over to the cooler. “P-Peppa…?”

“Melon first! Replenish energy!” You grab a few slices and munch down, handing Cocoa one too, then Lime as she follows you both.

“Peppaaaa.” Cocoa takes the slice, pouting slightly.

You slow down as you get to the water. “We ARE going to kick back and relax, promise. I just wanna make sure these waters are safe for us still.”

Lime quickly finishes her slice of watermelon and rushes in first past the two of you, finally diving into the water. “Seems safe enough!”

Once you and Cocoa join her, you take point ahead, your friends flanking you. Don’t sense anything unusual this time around. Snapping your goggles on (thank goodness they’re waterproof), you dive into the deeper water and look around. Coral reef further out that you can see, goggles do pick up some curious things. Some animals swimming strangely, though you can’t feel anything especially out of the ordinary with them. Also, what MIGHT be a very, very small trail of metal. From the shark? Either way, unusual. There also seems to be a large turtle swimming out in the distance. Kinda feels familiar.

Tracking the trail of metal you can spot, it does seem to just be bits and pieces that were shaken loose as the shark picked up speed. Hrmn. Okay, that checks out. As you continue following the metal, you keep a look out for any unusual Ki signatures you sensed prior. You get… something. Way further out though.

Heading back up for air, you speak with Lime and Cocoa. “It’s just bits and pieces, but some that do look like they belong to that larger chunk of it.”

“So was this relatively recent?” Cocoa asks aloud. “I mean, for it to just be falling off and leaving a trail…”

“Maybe the shark got into something.” Lime speculates. “Investigated a sunken ship and scraped itself against some of the metal.”

“Reasonable assumption to make.” you affirm. “But that leads to more questions. WHAT did it get into? What would draw out a shark THAT big that it’d seem like a decent meal?”

“Fishing vessel?” Cocoa guesses.

“That would be a very big fishing vessel. Even commercial-size ones rarely have that kind of hold.” Lime states. “Probably for obvious reasons. After a point, doesn’t become very cost-effective.”

“I’m heading back down.” You dive deep again, getting even further out, the ocean floor now about 100 meters from the surface, though you couldn’t see most of it through the coral reef. There’s eventually a much steeper drop separating the reef from open ocean, but you can see something much further down. Some more bits of metal, part of that trail.

You also sense some things, a few of the fish… feel unusual. Some of them seem to be grouped around a thing in the sand around the coral. Heading in closer, you notice something odd. There’s… something buried in the sand. Not very deep, but deep enough that the fish are trying to move sand away to get at it. As you reach it, the fish swim away… and reveal a horrific sight.

It’s… it’s a body. A… a person. But that face, it.. it couldn’t be… You almost feel like your stomach’s going to turn. Is this some kind of sick joke?! The… the face, there’s enough left of it that… you can see who it was.

Which just makes this all the more impossible that it’s down here.

‘Videl, Pantea, contact Krillin and Lazuli, NOW!’

“Well. This is not what I expected to see today.” Krillin comments as he looks over the corpse. “Spooky as heck. Must’ve been a real shock to you, Peppa.”

“Why’s it bald, though?” Videl asks. “Er… him… you… ugh, this is confusing.”

“That is a VERY good question. The skin’s weird too, and the eyes are kinda… red.” Pantea points out.

“You sure you don’t have a twin brother, Mr. Krillin?” Lime asks.

“I’m fairly certain. And whatever it is, it’s not ME me.” All of you look at Krillin, then back at the corpse. “…Hey. Come on, you all know I grew this hair all on my own. I’ve even got pictures. Don’t look at me like I’m some Juan Sanchez pretending to be Krillin.”

“It’s not that.” Pantea comments. “But twin brother might not be that far off. Someone might have cloned you.” She walks back to the metal, placing her hand on the “R” that’s plastered across it. “…And we might have a lead here.”

“If you’re saying this is something to do with the Red Ribbon Army, then it’s not something recent, I can tell you that much.” Krillin crosses his arms and looks over it. “…But that does sound like a lead. I’m gonna take this over to Mifan, maybe get see if 19 or even General Blue have an idea on what it might be. I’d ask 16 but the guy’s pretty hard to find.” Krillin places his fingers on his forehead.

You look around at everyone. “Well? What do you girls think? Still wanna have some fun here? Wanna call it off?” Looking right at Cocoa, you ask, “You sure you’re up to play detective again? I kinda still want to get some relaxation in, but I did kinda poke my nose into this mystery already.”

“If I’m being honest? I think I’ll pass this time. I mean, for now, at least. I’d like to have some relaxation time too…” She looks towards the ocean. “Just so long as we stay out of the sea for a bit. I am FAIRLY sure it’s out to get us.”

“You say that like it’s gonna send a tidal wave towards us next.” Lime comments.

“Don’t give it ideas.” Cocoa responds.

Videl and Pantea both laugh. “All right, I guess we could let the pros handle this.”

Krillin laughs. “Not sure if ‘pro’ is the right word but hey, sure.”

“Best of luck then, Krillin. Hope were able to help a bit. See you later, we’ll be sticking to our beach time!” You give him a wave, Krillin returning the favor before teleporting away.

All of you regroup near the cooler, sitting down and having some more watermelon slices. “So not gonna go for any sunken treasure until we’re sure it’s not out to get little ol’ Cocoa here.” Lime teases.

“Hey.” she grumbles. “Once is unusual. Twice is a unwelcoming. I don’t want this to be a pattern.”

“Still up for that volleyball, Videl?” Pantea questions.

“In a bit. Let’s chill first.” She lays back against the beach chair.

“So, what do you all want to do before summer ends? Gotta be something!” you ask, sitting up a bit. “One thing, little, big, don’t matter! Come on, let’s hear it.”

Videl’s the first to speak up. “I… want to learn a bit more Magic. Some stuff I’ve been trying to manage with Teach.”

“Oh? What are you trying to learn?” Pantea asks.

“This… healing ability she’s managed. I want to be able to diversify my abilities a bit. Chuu Lee’s been kinda busy lately though. So, got to wait on it.” She plays with her twintails and then raises an eyebrow to Pantea. “What about you?”

“I’ve got some research papers I’m getting ready to publish.” she replies like it’s no big deal. “Just some stuff on robotics.”

“What, you’re gonna publish something on 19 and 16?” Videl questions.

“There’s Giru too.” you point out.

“Oh no no, this is my own work. But they are tangentially related to it. I’ve just been working on this on the side.”

Lime crosses her arms. “Jeeze, ‘just’ on the side?”

“Mom’s got her own projects she’s working on, Grandpa’s got his, this is mine.” Pantea states. “Okay Lime, your turn.”

She groans. “Fiiiiiine. If I’m being honest… I kinda have done a lot I wanted to do over summer already. If there’s anything left on my list… I guess it’s training.”

You and Cocoa look to her curiously. “Training?” the two of you repeat.

“I’m not blind to the dangers out there. I… want to be able to at least protect myself if I’m gonna go around poking into places where such dangers might lurk. So. I’m gonna pick up on training again.” she explains.

Cocoa… seems to be a little taken aback by that, her back slouching a little as her eyes look down. You get up and move over to her, dragging the beach chair with your tail, placing your arm around her shoulder as you sit right next to her. “So how about you?”

She fakes a pout. “Must you?”

“Gonna make me gag.” Lime mumbles.

You smile innocently, ignoring that. “Come on, gotta be something you’re looking forward to.”

Cocoa sighs. “All right, fine. I… wanted to design a…” Her voice becomes a murmur. “…a little costume.”

“Costume?” you repeat.

Cocoa hides her face. “Just… look, it’s something I’ve been kinda thinking about.”

“Soooomething we can work on together?” you ask her with a wide grin. She mutters out a “maybe.” Good enough for you! You notice Videl and Pantea giving the pair of you some curious looks. “…What?”

“Oh nothing.” Videl giggles softly. Pantea keeps motioning her mouth like she wants to say something, but keeps preventing herself from doing so. She even gives Videl some awkward looks , like she wants to ask her something, but keeps shaking her head stopping herself from doing so.

Your other hand pulls Cocoa closer for a hug, your girlfriend holding your wrist gently. “If it really is nothing, I’ve got another question then. The two of you put any more thought into Gohan’s offer? I really think you both should take him up on it.”

The two pout, then look to one another. Videl turns her attention back to you first. “…I’ve put some thought into it, yes. If it’s really what it’s cracked up to be, then sure.”

Pantea mumbles something under her breath. You ask her to speak up. Her face goes red. “…Only if it’s not my first…”

Your concentration’s broken as you feel Cocoa’s free hand stroke your tail, you letting out a quick, soft yelp. “H-hey!”

“You’re asking all the questions. Gonna let us ask some questions now?”

“O-okay, first off! D-don’t go for the tail, please. Just ‘cause I’ve trained it doesn’t mean it… likes surprises like that.” you tell Cocoa in a pouty, almost whiny tone.

“So what she’s saying is, do it again.” Lime remarks. “Just not in public.”

“LIME!”

“Oh?~” Cocoa asks you in a teasing tone.

“COCOAAAAA!” you complain.

A mischievous grin on her face, she brings her hand up and pokes your cheek. “Gonna give us some answers now?~”

“Bold of you to assume I make such long-term plans.” you remark. Everyone around you laughs… except for Cocoa, whose hand starts moving down. “All right, all right! Go ahead. Feel free.”

“You willingly put yourself in this danger zone.” she teases. “And you’re the one who’s not trying to leave it.”

You begin to make awkward, confused, and grumpy noises as Lime sits up again, placing her hands on her knees. “Okay, okay, let’s see… umm… hrmn… how do I phrase this…”

“Actually, if you don’t mind me going first…?” Pantea asks hesitantly, looking at both you and Lime. She gives a nod, muttering to herself. “All right so, I’ve actually got something a bit more mundane. I know the two of you have a couple games you’re looking forward to, out in little over a month.”

“Oh crap, right! Damn, so soon…?” Cocoa sits up a bit. “Mhh… have my preorder for SoulSilver ready, but…”

“Actually, different question!” She pokes her fingers together. “Peppa, you… uh… think you might be willing to help me with a little game I’ve been trying to make with mom?”

“So you’ve been making games on the side too?” Lime asks.

Her head sinks a bit. “…I-it’s not a major project or anything! …Yet. I just. Kinda want some people to help with.”

Hmm. That’s a curious if vague request. Videl’s next. “Here’s mine. Peppa, I’ve heard rumors that next year there’ll be another Mifan Tag Tournament. If you had to pick, who’d you want to be your tag partner… and what team would you worry about facing the most?”

Mifan Tag Tournament huh? That- wait a second! “Hey that’s two!”

“Answer one or both then, I’d just like to know.”

Lime slaps her knees. “Okay! Okay I know how to phrase this!” She leans forward. “So like… it’s exclusively girls you like, right?”

You squint. “And why exactly are you bringing this up?”

Lime gets a very serious look on her face. “Well, ever since you and Cocoa posted that photo, I’ve… been hearing some stuff about people who aren’t very happy about that. And some that are EXTREMELY enthusiastic about it, for… differing reasons. You being the world champ is kinda putting that into the spotlight. You sure you’re… really up for the kind of stuff that entails?”

Voting against choosing longtime friends and close family members. Nepotistic reasoning like that might not work out how you envision, and this is an opportunity to grow beyond our past selves by working with new people, different fighters. Chi-Chi wasn't the best fighter of the Turtle School, but her partnership with Maple helped her grow into a champion. Peppa has already trained a lot with Videl and master and her parents and brother and cousin, so the returns she and her already known partner would get would probably be lackluster. Plus, those people probably want to test Peppa's mettle in the tournament, Gohan and Izzy especially. 19 probably would as well, but she has not approached Peppa for a rematch yet.

Piccolo, Keli and Raditz seem cool, Peppa hasn't trained with Raditz as much as the rest of her family members, supporting those.

Quite a different kind of Crossover than Rangers in Space was.

And okay, NOW we are really back!

All right Peppa, let’s see. From the top. “I can definitely help, Pantea! Just give me a time you want to get started on it.”

She claps her hands together excitedly. “Perfect! Thank you, Peppa!”

“And Videl, I actually do have quite a few people in mind. For starters, you and I make an excellent team already. We know each other’s moves pretty well, we’re both really strong, and we could cover our blindspots easily. That said, dad and I also work together really well, as do Gohan and Izzy. And to say nothing of mom’s massive arsenal of skills.” You rub your chin. “Though… I’ve got a few other ideas. Even though those would be the obvious choices, there are some other folks that I’d be a decent match with. Like uncle Raditz, he’s pretty close to dad in power, but he’s a more tricky fighter than dad. I’ve got training with him already, so we’d be able to read each other’s moves pretty well. Also, teach! Chuu Lee and I would make a really good pair, we’ve both specialized with Wind Magic and we have lots of our own twists on it.”

“Tch. The current AND former champs on the same team. Yeah, that’s not gonna stomp the competition.” Pantea remarks.

“Got a point there though, teach would be a very potent partner for you. Plus, having spent some time really seeing him fight, Raditz could definitely be a force amplifier with you.” Videl agrees.

“There’s Keli too. We haven’t trained together a lot, but I’ve seen her develop some new skills that’d be extremely helpful. If we could get some teamwork down, I’m sure we’d kick a lot of butt!”

Lime taps her chin. “Would certainly say something if the two of you pair up together, too.”

“And there’s also Mr. Piccolo. He’s no slouch when it comes to either skill or power, and he’d provide a much more challenging matchup paired with my own. 19 works along a similar manner. Hmm… heh, and even my cousin Daikon could be a decent partner if we don’t go overboard with showing off our strength. Maybe they could be a good team together, too…”

“Soooo… no real preferences?” Cocoa asks. “You listed a lot.”

“I’d really have to think about that, but hey, we’ve got a year to prepare.” Hmm… but that leads to another thing… “As for teams I’d worry about facing, dad and uncle Raditz probably tops the list. Even with all the strength they’ve tapped into, they’re surprisingly well coordinated when they need to be and could prove to be a devastating pair if they really put their minds to it. Plus… well, they’ve got Fusion too.”

“What about Vegeta?” Pantea asks.

“Honestly, if I really wanted to turn this into a challenge, I could try to team up with him again, but I don’t know how well he’d do as part of a tag team. So he’s more of a wild card.” you admit. “All right! Last one! So, Lime, I… have to admit that I’m not the only one who’d have something to say about that…” You look to Cocoa.

She smirks tellingly. “Who was the one who put that photo online in the first place? I’m the one who asked you, after all.”

You smile wide. “All right.” Turning your attention to Lime, you explain, “I am what I am. I’ve made no real attempt to hide or deny it. I’m not discouraged by any mean comments, and if need be I’ll face them head-on.” You pull Cocoa closer. “Probably should take a bit closer look at what they’re saying, though…”

Lime gives you a nod. “Looks like you’re ready for that, then.”

“Soooo… anyone have any suggestions on my own training? I’m open for any suggestions. Come on, anyone? I’m curious about what you all think.”

Pantea leans forward, making a soft “hmm” sound as she thinks. “Well, if you want my opinion? You can be a very sneaky fighter, but you’ve also got a lot of endurance. You’ve got a tendency to try to take control of a fight, heading in where you see an opening and swerving around or taking a hit when you think it’ll put you in a better position against your foe. Or, if that’s not an option, you’ll try to wear down a foe another way. That said, you’re used to being pretty close to a foe in terms of power. Even against someone like Vegeta, you’ve rarely had any fights that you’re not capable of at least coming close to a foe in power. So I think you should try to prepare for that. How are you going to be ready for a foe you can’t wear down or fight evenly with? Given our luck, not even you are going to stay on top forever.”

“Pantea brings up a good point.” Videl comments. “I think you should work on your reflexes. You’ve got very good ones, but I’ve seen Maple and Acer pull off some absolutely insane maneuvers in the past. Maybe see what they’ve got that’ll allow you to move like they do. Any damage you can avoid helps out substantially in the long run.”

Lime slaps her knees again. “How about diversifying your skillset? You’ve been watching that anime with the rest of these dorks,” She waves her arms around towards Videl and Pantea. “That’s probably given you some ideas, right? Take something from that, try something much more out of left field than what you’re used to.”

“Whoyoucallinadork?” Videl mutters, squinting.

Cocoa pokes your cheek. “Up for something not related to fighting?”

“Sure.” you nod.

“You’ve been sketching and drawing quite as a hobby, but you might be able to improve on it too. Take some time to draw a bit more, maybe try reading up on ways to improve it.” your girlfriend states. “Maybe use it as a way to relax when you’re done training.”

You blink, almost surprised by the suggestion. “Huh. You know, I haven’t really thought about that…”

She smiles pridefully. “Though if you want more fight-related suggestions, you could work on improving your stealth. You learned how to hide your Ki really well. Maybe you could look into other ways to keep yourself from being detected.”

“Heh, thanks Cocoa. I’ll definitely keep that in mind.” That’s pretty good. Okay! Got stuff to focus on! “So, anyone still up for some volleyball?”

Videl leaps to her feet. “Sure am! How’ll we do this? Just you and me, Peppa?”

“Let’s pair up! Lime, with me!” You finally let go of Cocoa, starting to stand.

“Yeesh. You and me against Videl and Pantea, huh?” Lime pretends to complain.

“I mean, unless you wanna take my place, Cocoa?” Pantea asks, adjusting her glasses and looking over, already knowing the response she’d get.

“I’ve been around the lot of you long enough to know better than jump into the middle of all this.” She lays back on the beach chair.

“Heh, you sure? It’s not like we’d play too rough with you.” you comment to Cocoa, giving her a wink as you stand.

“Oh, I’m sure.” she replies… and you feel her finger stroke along your tail for a brief moment as you stretch it.

“H-h-hey! What’d I say?” you pout at her childishly.

Cocoa giggles. “You left it open. Ain’t gonna win if you’re distracted that easily. Now get your cute butt out there.”

You stutter and blush, tail curling around your waist. All right, she wants a show? You’re gonna give her a show. You and Lime get by the net, Videl and Pantea heading to the other side. Videl picks up the volleyball. “Ready? Service!”

Even though you try to keep it low-key, your competitiveness certainly kicks things up a notch. Videl and Pantea are in near perfect sync with one another, but you’re just quick enough to keep pace. However, as much as Lime is trying, she’s having a hard time even coming close to keeping up with any of you. So instead of merely trying to win, you help coach Lime, and while it costs the two of you some points… she improves. And what’s more, her improvement comes right as Videl and Pantea start to become a little overconfident with their lead.

“Lime, pass it!” you call out, bending your knees.

“Hup!” She hits it high into the sky. You leap into the air. Don’t hit too hard. Videl’s ready, she expects a spike. But you don’t go for that. You keep pace with the volleyball’s speed, and right as it comes close to the net, you give it a chop that sends it right between the pair, Videl and Pantea nearly falling over one another to try and stop it.

“Awesome!” You raise both your hands as you land, Lime returning the favor as the two of you high-ten. “Teamwork makes the dream work!”

“Mngh. Score point.” Videl grumbles, picking up the ball. She serves it, Pantea leaping up stylishly, back facing you and Lime. She spreads her legs and actually hits the ball underneath her, passing right under her legs and towards you. With her free hand she runs her fingers through her purple hair, flipping back over right as she watches you try to deflect it.

Hard, definitely not an maneuver you were expecting, but you stop the ball and awkwardly bounce it up. “Lime, quick!”

She tries to fly towards it… and ends up getting bonked in the chest by the volleyball. “GAH, OW!”

“Lime, you okay?!” Videl and Pantea ask simultaneously.

She powers through the pain though and spikes the ball right beyond the net before they can regain their composure. Score point! Lime lands, and you rush over to her. “I’m so, so sorry! I thought-!”

She laughs. “I’m fine, I’m fine. I don’t think you bruised my boobs or anything, Peppa. Eheh. Ow. Stings a bit.”

Videl and Pantea both hang their heads in defeat. “Looks like we underestimated you. Won’t happen again, that’s for sure.” Videl states.

As you all take down the net, you head back to Cocoa. You look to her and ask, “Had fun watching?”

She stretches her arms and legs. “Yeah. I’m glad we got at least one proper beach day in.”

As Peppa enjoys her little beach day with friends, Izzy is hard at work trying to uncover magical artifacts still on Earth…

“So, Sachie, Zarid, 19, what places stand out to you?” you ask the three with you.

“I have done some preliminary scans of the prairie down south. There is something that stands out. I believe Yajirobe is still willing to help us investigate the place.” the robot girl says first.

“Let’s check out that forest! Yurin’s group a’ ninja might be able to give us some pointers.” Sachie pipes in.

“If they’re still willing to be friendly. I’m sure they’re on better terms and everything, but I don’t know if they’re going to just let us snoop around.” Zarid comments. “The land around Korin’s Tower does seem a bit more enticing, though.”

Hmm… those are your three options…

“I’m gonna go with 19 on this. Let’s check out those prairies down south. Whatcha got on it so far?”

She nods, and starts to explain, “West of South City is a large prairie, long rumored to be home to certain magical beings. Recently a large temple has been found deep within that prairie, seemingly abandoned. Last time I talked with Yajirobe, he mentioned it being home to very ‘spooky’ phenomena.”

“Spooky how?” Sachie asks, twirling a finger in her hair.

“Odd voices, ominous auras, unusual creatures lurking in the shadows. He has not been there in quite some time, but I believe he is still familiar enough to give us pointers where need be.”

You crack your knuckles. “Sounds like something worth investigating. Let’s go!”

And so, after some travel, Yajirobe’s hovercar touches down near the outskirts of a temple covered in dense foliage, all of you landing near him. The air’s much cooler than you were expecting, though exceptionally humid. “Here’s the place all right.” the large samurai comments, scratching his mustache. “Man, I wasn’t sure I’d a place like this again.”

The temple looks… bizarrely demonic, unwelcoming, a moss-covered skull as an entrance, spires almost blending into the trees, and… you can definitely sense things inside it. There are also things around it, too. Weak Ki signatures, that… kinda remind you of Yosei.

>A. Well, no time like the present! Let’s head in!

“Okay, let’s look around a bit before heading in. 19, take point, you’ve got better scanners than any of us. I really wanna see what some of these Ki signatures are. Sachie, Zarid, what’ll you two be up-” You turn around and see Sachie has already walked up a tree and is about to leap from it to one of the spires. “…to?”

The ninja girl leaps off and onto the spire. “Heeeey! There’s way, WAY more of this thing than there appears!”

“I guess I’m helping her scout.” Zarid says with a shrug. “We’ll see how far this goes and report back.”

19 heads closer, looking into the ground near the temple’s entrance. You walk with Yajirobe around the area a little, trying to calmly approach the Ki signature you sense. “Thanks again for helping us out here. Kinda surprised, actually, mom gave you a call and you were at our place in no time.”

“Kid, I learned a looooong time ago not to argue with your mother.” he responds with a slight shudder. “Besides, this was damn near my back yard growing up. Lotta tasty monsters out here.”

A sparkly little flash zips by you, from the ruins into the trees. Your attention turns towards it. “Hello there! Sorry if we’ve spooked you!”

Behind a set of flowering vines, a tiny head pokes up. A… fairy. About the side of your open hand. She sees you and seems perplexed. She sees Yajirobe and her eyes narrow. “…Samurai. You’ve returned.”

Yajirobe blinks, then points to himself. The fairy lets out a low growl. “Do uhhh… I know you?”

She lets out a pouty “harumph!” and flies off, though addressing you with a very… curious warning. “Mahou! Don’t stay in this place too long!”

>A. Wait a second, get back here!

Wait what did she call you? “H-hey, wait a second!” you call out as you fly after her. “Hold it, hold it, sorry but… what did you call me?”

She blinks. “Mahou?”

“Wh-” Okay you didn’t mishear that. “All right I’m sorry but WHAT?”

She’s confused. “Is that not what you are? You’ve… got Magic to you. A lot of it.”

You cross your arms. “Okay. And how do you know that?” you ask the clearly magical fairy with fluttering pixie wings. “…Y-you know what I mean. The last time I heard someone call me that was a demon.”

She gasps and moves back. “Y-you didn’t…?”

“No no no it was this big dumb nerdy demon with these big dorky glasses who-” Focus, Izzy, focus. “Okay, look, you clearly know more about what this power is. Can you explain more? Especially in regards to that warning.”

The fairy’s hesitant. But she feels comfortable enough to at least give you a better explanation. “…If you stay there too long, it will affect you, your Magic, your mind, all of you. That place is... wild. Unfocused. Chaotic. If you aren’t sure of your control over your power, it’ll warp you and twist you and pull you around like leaves in a raging stream. You’re a Mahou. You’re… brimming with Magic. Magic that can be reshaped.”

“What IS that place, then?” you ask.

Her fluttering wings slow a bit. “Where humans of the past came to rely on Magics to defend themselves. A place of dreams… of nightmares… it’s been left untamed. The heart of that place is like a wilderness unto itself.”

Okay, that’s even more questions for- “Hey! Izumi! What’s she saying?” Yajirobe asks.

The fairy tenses and glares. “Samurai.”

“...Yooouuuu know him?”

“We do.” she… well, she can’t really growl, so it comes off almost like a squeak. You try to keep yourself from laughing. “And he better!”

Hokay! “Uhhhh, Mr. Yajirobe, did you know any fairies?” you question, looking back.

He shrugs and waves his hand. “Like, know them know them, or just happen upon them from time to time? ‘Cause I only remember some that would pester me about my food.”

“YOU BIG FAT JERK!” she yells out and flies off in a huff, this time vanishing into the foliage… and apparently hiding her Ki. Huh.

“Wh-what?” he mutters out.

“She uh… apparently has history with you.” Hoo boy do you feel like you almost stepped on a landmine.

“HEEEEYYYYY!” Sachie’s voice calls out.”I think we’ve got a good idea on how big this is!”

You regroup with everyone, and catch up on what all you heard. The “wild” Magics of this place, the fairy’s warnings to you, and how Yajirobe’s apparently done something to upset her. Sachie and Zarid tell you that the whole complex is nearly half a kilometer long and a third wide at its widest spot, as 19 informs everyone that it’s three levels deep, each one between 10 and 30 meters.

All of you look towards the entrance. Well, guess your curiosity was piqued before, but now you DEFINITELY want to get to the bottom of this.

The interior seems to match the exterior, though you do feel something… “off” about the place. Kinda… reminds you of Lord Konpei’s palace. You can kinda feel stronger concentrations of it deeper within, but they’re unfocused and vague, and there are several… well “chunks” of the magic. At least three of them, major ones, maybe more deeper down.

Sachie places her hands on the back of her head and starts to move forward. She glances around and comments, “Kinda spooky.” She skips forward, as if playing a game with the tiles leading from the entrance.

“This is pretty unusual.” Zarid adds in, looking closer at one of the walls as you all continue along the entrance. “There are… these odd patterns along the walls.” He gently brushes his hand against one.

“The fairy said something about there being a ‘wild’ kind of Magic in this place, and warned me against staying here too long. So let’s not stall.” you tell them.

“Yeah kid’s right, it’s already startin’ to give me the creeps.” Yajirobe grumbles.

19 looks forward. “There is a split path up ahead. One seems to go south-west, the other north-west. I believe the north-west one is shorter, but the south-west one is registering some unusual trace energy signatures.”

You march through first, bringing up Tapion’s barrier, mixing in a bit of Magic with it. Before anyone can ask what you’re doing, you hold up your hand. Eyes focused on the barrier, you watch anything unusual with it. And… coast is clear. So far. “All right, I’m gonna use this as a litmus test of the ‘Wild Magic’ in this place. If anything starts to act up, we should start heading out. That said, the south-west passage might be the better choice. Get that out of the way first.”

“Woo! Let’s go!” Sachie cheers and nearly runs past you and into the path.

“Hooooold it! We check for traps first.” you tell her.

She stops mid-step. “Traps. Trrraaaaps. Right. Right.” She pulls out a… very “decorated” shuriken and flings it forward.

It stops quite a ways away without much incident, embedding itself in some foliage that seems to be creeping in from outside. 19 remarks dryly, “That is one way to check for traps.”

As you head in, slowly and carefully, you still keep your eyes open for any potential traps. Zarid keeps looking across the walls curiously. “So many strange patterns. Wonder what they mean.” He kneels down to a dinosaur skill resting on the flood. “And lots of fossils.”

“They are not fossils.” 19 corrects. “They retain most of their organic elements. These are merely old bones. While unusual given the humid environment, it is not that rare for such things to persist in this place.”

“Thanks for the lecture, professor.” Zarid rolls his eyes.

“Eh, dinosaurs this small aren’t that tasty.” Yajirobe points out, tapping the skull with his sword. “You gotta go for the real meaty ones if you want a good meal.”

Sachie stops and gasps. “Zarid. ZARID!”

He raises his guard. “What, what’s wrong?”

She looks back and tells him. “We haven’t tried dinosaur yet! We GOTTA before we head back.”

The boy grumbles, “You’re going to make my hair go grey before I’m 20.”

“Eh. Most taste like chicken.” Yajirobe grunts. “Except for the real meaty ones.”

As all of you walk forward, you look back at Sachie’s shuriken. It’s… moved? …No, the PLANTS moved. You check over your barrier. Nothing unusual… yet.

>A. Double-time, folks, let’s not give whatever’s in here a chance to sneak up on os

While still keeping the barrier up, you use the Multi-Form to create a clone and have her head over to the foliage, trying to retrieve the shuriken embedded in it, a Spirit Bit following her. Right as it’s grabbed, a vine lashes out at the copy. Not quickly enough for it to not be avoided, the Spirit Bit even knocks it away, but still quickly enough that it seems to be intentional.

“What the-?!” Zarid blurts out. Yajirobe draws his sword, Sachie getting into a fighting stance. Your copy heads back and hands over the shuriken to her.

“...Curious.” 19 comments. “There is some kind of energy being given off by those plants beyond their normal biosignature.”

You can kinda feel it too. Magic. There’s something just… “off” about it. “Sachie, how many more shuriken do you have?”

“Like… twenty?” She looks down at the one in her hand. “Twenty-one.”

“Toss a few at it.” you instruct.

And so she does, this time the plant moves quite a bit quicker. Your copy retrieves them again, then hands them back, disappearing. “So it’s certainly aware of us. Everyone, keep moving forward, double time it, but be aware of this. We don’t wanna get snagged on one of them.”

You start to get closer to a massive source of Magic you’ve been feeling. Some of the vines and other bits of foliage that’ve crept in are actively moving along the walls, but thankfully are repelled by your barrier. You see something… glowing green deeper within.

But more curiously, you feel another group off in the distance. Normal folks. Well… relatively normal. Strongest of the group feels like at least half the power of Yajirobe, which is still quite a lot. Not sure if they’re friendly or not, but you’re definitely not alone here.

As you slow your movement forward, you bring out a Spirit Bit and send it to scout ahead. Oddly, its movement… wavers slightly, like instead of moving through air, it’s trying to push through water. Or… oil. Or something. There’s a flicker of power around your barrier, but only just. You’re able to stabilize it with ease. As you enter the room, you find it’s actually got a staircase leading down a level. The room is two levels tall, with plenty of space for one to move around in, a pathway around the first level and a glowing green light in the center.

As you approach, you see the light fade just a little. You see this… green shard of a crystal embedded in what looks to be a skeleton wearing armor. Well! That seems… awfully convenie-

There’s a creaking sound. The… skeleton moves. You see it’s not just a skeleton, but some kind of… mummified corpse. Sachie gulps, taking a step back. “Well, isn’t that a familiar sight.”

“LLLLEEEEEEAAAAAAVVVVEEEEEE…” it speaks. Its voice is like a loud hiss. You see things start to shift around it, large stony structures… except not stone. Like chitinous marble, almost. The green glow shimmers around the structures. What flesh clings to the skeletal form moves eerily as it raises its arm. It repeats its demand. “LLLLLLEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAVVVVVVVEEEE…”

>A. No can do, buddy. Would like that crystal though

You bring out your Spirit Bits and have them hover around your friends. “Woah woah woah woah, hold on there buddy. Who are you exactly? Are you… conscious enough to tell us about this place?”

“YYYYOOOUUUU… AAAARRREE…” The green crystal flashes with a surge of power. The skeleton’s eyesockets light up with a pair of green specks. Its speech becomes… more coherent, booming. “IN THE PRESENCE OF COURAGEOUS GUARDIANS OF LONG AGO.” The Knight begins to stand slowly. “VANQUISHERS OF DEMONS. SLAYERS OF THE MAKYAN MONSTERS. THE RESTING PLACE OF MAGIC.”

“And you’re one of those guardians, huh?” Yajirobe asks, genuinely unimpressed.

“YOU HAVE NO REASON TO BE HERE. LEAVE THIS PLACE, CHILDREN. YOU WILL GET NO FURTHER WARNINGS.”

You cross your arms and raise an eyebrow. “Look, you’re spooky and everything, but I’ve seen worse. I’ve beaten some demons myself, I’ll have you know. Full-on Majin. And all of us here have faced off against and beaten similarly impossible odds.” Your hand moves to the Sword of Braves. You can… feel a sort of reaction coming off it. Not a strong one, but one all the same. “So, can you tell us why we should leave?”

The skeletal knight seems… almost curious by your words. The floating structures start to combine together, taking form around him as he starts to float in the air. “YOU BOAST A GREAT DEAL, CHILD. IF YOU BELIEVE YOU CAN CALM THE MAGICS OF THIS REALM, PROVE YOUR WORTH.” A massive, almost bug-like golem or… mech of some king of the chitinous marble, absolutely flowing with power, stand, the knight entering into it. You can… almost feel the very air around it fueling this new foe. It raises a hand and forms a sword in it, mystical in structure and reacting just like the rest of the golem… mech… thing. “SHOW ME YOUR COURAGE! EN GARDE!”

You begin to move forward, hand on your sword’s hilt. The knight’s massive form brings up its equally massive sword, then points it towards you. It looks like it wants to challenge you directly. Still feeling that massive amount of energy swirling around it. Heh. You might actually have to try. Sachie and Zarid look on, ready to help but not jumping in. 19 moves in closer, though, not following you, but trying to get a better look over the knight as it moves. Yajirobe simply shrugs and makes sure nothing’s coming towards the lot of you.

There’s still this flicker around your barrier. Not going to be able to keep it up while you’re fighting him, but you’re getting wary of the kind of Magic that’s flowing around this place. Going to need to be careful.

It’s going to take some careful maneuvering to make sure you’re able to come out on top. The knight thrusts his sword forward as you start to drop your barrier. You dodge, but… the air around you starts to tingle your skin just a little. You shiver from it, but bring out the Sword of Braves, and knock the Knight’s sword back. Your blade shimmers slightly as it does, as if it’s reacting like you are. You back away and bring up your barrier once more. This… could get exhausting.

The knight holds his sword back, a green swirl of power filling it, as if drawn from the very air around it. He leaps backwards, the back of his golem mech opening up briefly to reveal “wings” of energy that help it jump. And right as its feet touch the ground, it thrusts the sword forward… firing off a beam of energy from it! A swirl of green and purple-pink energy, you don’t know how your Barrier will react to it, so you move out of the way. The blast hits the ground where you stood, but it doesn’t leave as much damage as it should.

Dropping your barrier briefly again, you lunge at the knight and try to hit his golem’s sword hand, though you feel another wavering surge of energy that seems to… actually help the knight, with him blocking your blade with his massive one. A brilliant white flash erupts as the two swords clash, almost bright enough to hurt your eyes. Your raw strength at least is enough to surprise the knight, as the two of you trade blows with your blades. Still, you don’t know if this is going to wear him down or not. If anything, he seems to be getting stronger. You move back again, barrier up once more.

“Izumi!” Yajirobe calls out to you. “Focus on draw-cuts! One well-placed slash is all it should take!”

>A. All right, thanks Yajirobe! One well-placed draw-cut!

He’s fairly well versed in this kind of thing. You’d better listen. Backing away, you return the sword to its sheath, but keep your hands on both. Your barrier back up, it flickers again, but seems a bit more stable. You’ve got to train your body to keep a good flow going. Find the right opening, then strike. …And you’ve got a way to be ensure you’ll hit right when you need to.

The knight’s power only grows stronger, and you can even see him start to cast Magic himself. His golem mech’s free hand traces a star-shape with two fingers, then thrusts his fist into the center. A green swirl of Wind Magic launches… in the form of a large bird. Woah! Cool! But now’s your chance! “RAIO-KEN!” you roar, sparking with power as your barrier drops. You move under the Magical bird construct, then in a flash you draw your sword.

Before the Knight has a chance to react, you’ve slashed the sword hand off of the golem mech. But that’s not all. You also make strikes at the joints. Not chopping them off, but damaging them to the point where the mech collapses to one knee. You strike a heroic pose and bring your sword back to its sheath.

And… there’s laughter.

“HA… HAHAHA…” The knight’s voice seems… happy. “PERHAPS YOU DO HAVE WHAT IT TAKES…”

“Sir knight?” you turn back, left hand on your sword’s pommel. The chitinous marble of the mech fades into almost pixel-like specks of Magical dust. Where it was, the skeletal form of the knight remains, its head looking back to you. The green aura still flowing around it, but… less chaotically.

“YOU HAVE GREAT DEPTHS OF COURAGE, GIRL.” Its hand reaches for the green crystal shard. “TWO MORE REMAIN. FIND THEM. CALM THEM. LET THEIR MAGICS COME TO REST.”

“Wait what are-?”

It yanks the crystal from its body and tosses it to you, with you catching it with ease.. The skeletal, mummified form… finally comes to rest. The aura fades. You look down to the crystal. There’s… a warmth to it. Strong, but calm.

You can more clearly sense the other group in here. They’re not at all like the knight. They’re… also much deeper down.

He deserves to be put to rest properly, but for now, this’ll have to suffice. You clap your hands together and give a solemn bow to the knight, then stuff away the crystal. As you do, you tell the group, “Come on, no time to lose.”

“What is that anyway?” Sachie asks, surprising you as she drops down from the ceiling.

“WHT- DH- Sachie you were-” You look back. The Sachie that was there waves and poofs out of existence.

“Wanted to explore up ahead a bit.” she tells you. “Think there are some weeeeird guys out there.”

19 blinks at her. “...You left the group and wandered around on your own in a potentially dangerous magical fortress?”

“Was no biggie.” She waves her hand. “Ninja, remember. None of ya even noticed.”

Zarid narrows his eyes. “Sachie. Fengdu.”

“Oh come on, that barely counts!” she replies in a huff. “Besides, that was just a spooky mask.”

“Kinda lost here. We also gotta move. Talk as we go.”

Zarid follows along, 19 and Yajirobe trailing a little behind, making sure nothing’s following you. Sachie fills you in on what she saw. “There were like, three dinosaur guys or something. Mentioned something about a… triceratops?”

“Oooh, now those can be pretty tasty.” Yajirobe butts in. “They got a looootta meat on them, and aren’t very gamey. You guys find one, I call dibs.”

Zarid looks back at him. “…On. The whole dinosaur?”

“I mean yeah.”

Mom, dad, and aunt Maple mentioned that he had quite a stomach, but wow, he’s like uncle Goku. “Focus, people.”

“Anyway, three dinosaur guys, up ahead, probably more down below.” the ninja girl assures. “Betcha I can take ‘em.”

“Sachie, don’t get too ahead of yourself.” Zarid warns. She walks along the wall ahead of you. Zarid sighs loudly.

“We’ll try to sneak past them. Better to avoid a direct confrontation.” you tell everyone. “Sachie, can you give us some pointers here, Ms. Ninja?”

“Caaaaan do!” She leads the way.

As you all follow her lead, you move back a bit, walking alongside Zarid. “So she’s wandered off like that before?”

“Kinda. Sometimes she’ll get a little bored, sometimes she’ll just try to ‘help’ by jumping ahead without really thinking.” He rubs the side of his head. “She’s usually able to be level-headed enough to keep herself out of trouble… usually.”

“She said something about a mask…?”

“Usually.” he repeats a third time. “That time, well, cursed masks aren’t toys.”

”One time!” she calls out to him in a huff, pouting childishly.

“Huh.” you mumble in a more hushed tone. “You two have clearly been through quite a lot. Though you did seem fairly annoyed by that.”

“I don’t want my friends getting hurt.” he tells you. “She’s a very reliable friend.”

19 moves in closer, a genuinely curious look on her face. “Is she just a friend?”

“Yes.” the pair respond in near unison, though neither sounding flustered by it. Zarid scratches the top of his head. In a quieter tone, he admits to you and 19, “Look, I am perfectly aware of how it might seem, but we’re friends. ONLY friends.” He laughs softly. “Heh. We do kinda know some embarrassing secrets about one another though.”

Sachie’s hands… move to her rear? She turns back, pouting again. “H-hey! Zaaaariiiiid!”

“I didn’t say anything about what they are.” He gives a little smirk.

Sachie points her finger at him rudely. “You better not.”

“My apologies for making assumptions, then.” 19 tells the two.

“This is why I’m never having kids…” Yajirobe mutters to himself.

You all finally enter another large room, another two-level one, though a good deal wider. Sachie has everyone duck down close to a ledge, peeking her head out. You sense some Ki signatures down below, three of them. Deeper is that one you sensed before, and several more with it. You spot a strange altar closer to the main entrance of the room… similar to, but not the same as the one the Knight had. Sachie directs you forward, and expertly leading you all past the dinosaurs.

As you move, you think to ask 19, “Did you notice anything worth bringing up during my fight with that knight? Magic-wise, I mean.”

“It was very clearly drawing out power from the surrounding area, though focusing it to a point.” she explains. “What I assume to be that crystal shard you found. If I were to speculate, something about it amplifies Magic.”

“A magic amplifier, huh? Maybe that’s why this place feels so… wild, and just… ‘off’.” you reply to her quietly. “Like… maybe all this power just had nowhere to really go, and it’s been building up and up more and more.”

“I am unsure of what material that crystal is made of.” 19 adds. “It is quite unusual.”

“We’ll have time to analyze it once we have the others.” You peek over to the dinosaurs again. Two raptor-looking guys, and one… more of a bipedal triceratops. You try to listen in as all of you move along.

“...boss’s almost done, right? That big thing was tough, but not tough enough to keep him down.” one of the raptor-people asks.

“Should be. And once he’s done, King Triceratops will be most pleased.” the triceratops himself declares. “Should also be enough leverage to get our lands back from those thugs.”

…King Triceratops? Is… is that really the name they’re going with? “Whaaaa?” you mutter to everyone else. “Wait, what big thing?”

Sachie looks over as well. “…Huh. Yeah that is just like the one you fought with.”

Zarid’s eyes widen. “Which means this group is after those crystals as well, right?”

You listen in again as you reach the doorway, making sure to keep out of sight. As you do, though, you feel another surge of Magical power. Barrier holds, thankfully. The dinosaurs shudder right as the Magic seems to pass through. Mmh. “Agh. We gotta stay guard HERE of all places?”

The triceratops grunts. “No interlopers. Some of those thugs might’ve followed us. You heard the sounds before, didn’t you? You see any humans, dispose of them.”

“Coulda been those ugly fairies.”

The triceratops shakes his head. “No way. Too much noise.”

All of you start to head down a level, traveling through a set of hallways again… with creeping vines slithering across them once more. Ugh. Great. Zarid breaks the silence by asking, “Izumi, do you know any sort of… King Triceratops?”

“Not especially.” you reply. “Not many dinosaurs that run kingdoms I know of.”

“...Jeeze Zarid, not all royalty know each other.” Sachie teases.

“King Triceratops is leader of a dinosaur tribe that resides deep within a jungle south of West City.” 19 exposits. “Certain criminals have made attempts to set up residence in the jungle from time to time to hide from the law.”

>A. So these guys are trying to get rid of the bandits invading their home? Maybe we can reach common ground here
>B. Where’d you hear this from, 19?
>C. They don’t seem very friendly themselves…
>D. Something else?

“They don’t sound very friendly themselves…” you point out. “Maybe it would be better to have a chat with their ‘Boss’ to here. And if need be, their King. If they really are going to try and attack us on sight, we should at least demand some explanations on why.”

“A fair assessment to make.” 19 agrees.

“Do feel kinda bad if they’re trying to protect their home, though.” Zarid pipes in. “Even if they’re resorting to such measures to protect it…”

“Eh, I get where they’re comin’ from.” Yajirobe surprisingly comments. “But if they’re digging around a place like this, they’re doin’ it all wrong.”

“What do you mean?” you ask the chubby samurai.

“I’ve had to defend my home plenty’a times. Monsters, pirates, bandits, even the odd demon. Heh, and that was before I even knew who your mom was, kid.”

As you move forward, the vines slither again, and almost try to lash out at you all. But… there’s something off about it. As you feel another surge of Magic come around you, you start to get an idea. You bring out the crystal shard. Okay. Here goes. “Everyone, get behind me and shield your eyes.” you warn. Keeping hold of the crystal with one hand, you bring both to your face and mix in some Light Magic, yelling out, “SOLAR FLARE!”

The brilliant flash of Light erupts… and seems to become even stronger than normal. The vines encroaching on you actually retreat, and you feel the warmth in the crystal grow slightly stronger. Well. Stronger is probably the wrong word. More like… more refined. 19 looks to it curiously once the light fades. “It would appear that you have truly repelled it, rather than defend against it.”

You toss the crystal in the air and catch it again. “Haha, well worth the trip already. Okay, let’s go people, no time to lose!”

Curiously, even the distance you were traveling before seems to get smaller as you head down a set of stairs into what feels like the bottom of the structure. You pass across murals of people like the knight you faced fighting against various monsters, some imp-like, some hulking beasts, some definitely reminding you of demons. There are golem mechs like the knight’s, what look to be sorcerers or mages, even seemingly bare-fisted fighters in the mix of some of the battles.

Finally… you reach the the strongest concentration of Magical power. And the location of the other Ki signatures you’d sensed before. Another bipedal triceratops, a massive one, stands before another golem mech like the one you faced, flexing its muscles. Behind him is a group of cheering smaller dinosaurs. And… a blue glow comes off the dinosaur-man, contrasting the red one flowing from the mech.

“YOUR MIND IS DULL, BEAST. YOU KNOW NOT THE POWER YOU SEEK. YOU LACK THE ABILITY TO COMPREHEND IT.”

“HAH! I know enough! I know you’re the only thing standing between me and us taking those human punks down!” He raises his fist as the blue glow surges around him… and the air once again seems to shimmer with Magical power. As if in response, the Knight’s red aura surges higher. Even the one in your hand seems to react to this. And… the other knight’s gaze fixes on you. It knows you’re here. Oh this… this could get ugly.

All right folks, that's all for this this thread! Thank you all for sticking around for so long! I’ll be around for a bit for questions and stuff. Did y’all have fun?

Also, I do plan on starting up Zelda again next month, but would y’all prefer the next thread to continue Tuffle Quest, or are y’all up for a change of pace?

I've been waiting for Zelda for a long time, but it's hard to stop right before a climatic battle. Let's get one more tuffle thread in.
