You are Ushi Walker, also known Loanstar when you are in that furnace you call costume.
The half-japanese/half-american wielder of the mighty quirk “Everything is Bigger in Texas", one of U.A. High's first year students, fighting game prodigy and probably the only living american to be grounded by a ninja.

And even though you were startled awake by your ringing phone a couple of minutes ago, just after the sun finished getting it's shiny ass over the horizon, you can't help but claw frantically at your phone to call Shoto as soon as possible, getting ready for the day be damned.

The caller that woke you up was none other than your momma, who told you a few things about what happened in Hosu City after you hit the hay. A few things that sent your heart flying straight up to your throat, like the goddamned Hero Killer being caught there and that some interns were injured.

It took you less than half a second to piece together who those might be, with Deku's text pinpointing an alleyway in Hosu and Shoto going to check it out.

"C'mon sugah, pick up!" You plead with your phone at your ear, holding the device tighter with every tone that goes by.

After a nearly a minute of waiting, Shoto's voice finally comes through, before your knuckles finish going white.

>"Yes!?" He starts, sounding uncharacteristically mad, shocking you before speaking away from the phone. "Yes, I know."

You are starting to get tired of being confused, and it's not even 6 am yet.

>What do you do?

>[Start with the important stuff! "How are ya? Where are ya? Ah heard there were some injured interns and…"]
>[Who is he talking with? Why is he so angry? "So, sugah, who else is in there? You sound mighty angry for bein' so early."]

Has it been answered definitively anywhere whether or not Ushi can effect herself with her quirk simply by closing a hand/making a fist? Is there a a good reason why she prefers to lay a hand on her leg or something instead?

And how much does that whole "point contacted is center of expansion/contraction" thing really matter in this case?

Oh, and can she shrink to avoid fall damage if she does it high enough to take advantage of a lower terminal velocity?

Archive binged some months ago, and these questions have been bugging me ever since.

Thanks for coming back, Mic.

You shake your head to clear your head and start talking, not bothering to think much about what you are about to say, worrying only about getting the answers you need.

"How are ya? Where are ya? Ah heard there were some injured interns and… and..." You spew before taking a deep breath and sighing. "Sorry 'bout that. Thank ya for pickin' up! Last Ah heard of, you were rushin' in to check sumthin' dangerous out then the call dyin' out on me! Then Ah… Kinda crashed and dozed off. But Ah reckon that matters none, what happun' to y'all? Did ya find Deku? Are ya safe now?"

For a couple seconds, nothing comes from the phone, then Shoto's voice breaks the silence.

>"...I'm resting at Hosu General Hospital." He starts, making you feel like you just swallowed an ice cube. "And I'm sorry about the call, I had to hang up when I saw the Hero Killer."

"E-eh?" You squeak, hearing him list what you imagined would have been the worst possible scenario with no emotion but some fading anger in his voice.

>"DON'T SCARE HER LIKE THAT!" You can hear a familiar yet unexpected voice vigorously shout in the background.

"Is that Iida? What's he doin' there?" You ask, the surprise and your curiosity helping shake you out of your creeping dread.

Maybe he's just visiting and things didn't spiral down that badly? He went to Hosu after all.

>"Resting after being treated for his cuts and stab wounds, like Midoriya and I." Shoto answers, adding another loop-de-loop to the emotional rollercoaster this morning has been so far. "He's covering his face with his hands right now, but Midoriya is here too."

This time you don't squeak, as it's more of a confused gurgle that makes its way out of your throat.

>"STOP THAT!" Iida continues his background shouting. You can almost see his arms flailing through the audio-only call. "THERE'S NO REASON TO BE SO OBTUSE! YOU'LL MAKE HER WORRY FOR NO REASON!"

>"Right." Shoto confirms, his anger resurfacing. "There is nothing to worry about, since we were… rescued... by my father. We will have to rest here for a couple of days and it is safe to say we will miss the rest of our internships, but we will all be okay."

That lines up with what momma told you, but you just know it sounded wrong when he said it...

>"Well, that is what happened on my end last night. Midoriya found Iida fighting the Hero Killer and sent his location out, I came and helped them hold until Endeavor arrived and was the hero of the day." He summarises, almost like spitting the bitter experience out.

Maybe it was that traumatic?

>"I think that is all there is to that. How has your internship been?" He then asks, as if your one sided conversation had been nothing worse than a poor weather report.

"Sugah, y'all were stabbed." You point out. "Nobody cares 'bout mah ninja trainin''.

>"I care. Would not have asked otherwise." He replies. "Like I said, we will be here for days. It would be nice to have other things to think about."

>After hanging up, cry to yourself a little. Your a teenage girl that just had a roller coaster of feelings after-all. Releasing the emotions is healthy.

>Get prepped for the day and check in with edgeshot.

>Update Mom with details in addition to addressing other messages on the presumed trip to the hospital.

No nickname and proper grammar is on purpose at the end of the dialogue there.

Disregard that first part if Ushi can easily guesstimate that the trip back and forth will be too long to fit in with the rest of the day.

We're not blowing anyone off. Most of our duties take place in the afternoon/evening/night.
>>
>>4009735
there was just an internship related villain attack. we might get put on light duty anyway, and our close friends were hospitalized in the incident. im sure edgeshot would be understanding in our wanting to see them. You quickly glance at the top of your phone, moving some numbers in your mind and trying to guesstimate how much of your day it'd take to go to Hosu and back.

In the end, you conclude it shouldn't take too long…

If you can get Edgeshot's permission to even go, that's it.

"'s that so?" You ask, letting your growing relief and happiness creep into your voice, now that Shoto stopped throwing you emotional curveballs. "Well, Ah gotta get ready for the day 'n meet up with Edgeshot… But you bet your boots Ah’m gonna stop in on y’all as soon as Ah get the chance!"

>"Heh." You hear him softly chuckle at your words.

"But really, Shoto…" You confess, twirling a lock of your hair around your finger. "I am so glad y'all okay."

>"I will try to not worry you as much next time." Shoto replies, finally sounding like he's winding down.

"...How 'bout just not getting stabbed 'n the first place?" You ask, only half joking.

You'd really be happier if he could just not.

>"I do not think any of us can promise that." He says, taking the air out of your sails. Again. "Be safe yourself, I will look forwards to your visit."

"See you soon!" You cheerfully reply before ending the call. "Y'all better get better soon, ya hear me!"

That cheerfulness dies seconds later, as you let your phone hit your futon, followed by the rest of you, staring at the ceiling for a full five minutes.

It's not even noon! How can a day get so tiring so fast!?

But that's as far as you can let your moodiness drag you, there's far too much to do to just mope around!

You make a beeline for the bathroom and get yourself presentable as fast as your hair allows, then with your hair still damp, you go to the common area.

It's full of ninjas.

Well, just two, and two you know.

What you don't know is what in God's green earth is that they are trying to eat, at least at first glance.

A stunned glance to the kitchen reveals to you that someone must be as kitchen incompetent as can be, judging by the pot of doomed rice on the stovetop, not even burnt, but worse. It looks more like what a horror B movie about rice pudding would use as a monster.

While Johai seems to be putting on a brave face and shoveling the white gruel into his mouth using both of his chopsticks together like a rake, Edgeshot just pokes his, analyzing the overcooked mush and wondering how exactly does one melt a cereal.

Seeing you, the elder ninja latches on to the chance to push the plate away and address you.

>"I assume both of you have already heard the news, and that it all was handled without our intervention." He starts, continuing only after both you and Johai nod. "While his methods won't gain the public's love, it's impossible to argue with Endeavor's ruthless efficiency. Sadly, his lack of charisma may be tipping dominoes we aren't yet ready to deal with."

"...What now?" You ask, feeling a bit tired of having to dig for answers already.
>>
>"The Hero Killer's Last Monologue went unaddressed, recorded and now floating online." Edgeshot says, sighing, then recoiling slightly and away from the gruel. "Let evil ideas go unchallenged like that and any devil can become a folk hero, a martyr of their cause. Most heroic traditions have a reason to be, and one liners and cheesy speeches are not the exception, never forget it."

>"Yes master!" Johai emphatically agrees before continuing with his breakfast.

Edgeshot just pokes at his with his chopsticks, then lets go of them. They don't move at all.
Your mentor then continues to stare at them, holding his chin.

Perhaps you can wring some favor out of this… Just maybe.

Just come clean and tell Edgeshot that we are torn between checking on our friends and taking our internship as seriously as possible. He's the adult and pro here, take his advice on board before committing to playing hooky.

And no matter what, if we do ask for anything, make sure to use proper Japanese formal protocol for requesting a favor from a superior, and to sound like we've thought this through, weighed the consequences, but will still humbly respect his decision.

And do it while whipping up something more edible, because saving people is just always the heroic thing to do.

Worst case scenario is we apologize profusely to Todoroki for writing checks our ass can't cash, but I doubt Edge would keep us from going without a seriously compelling explanation.

In fact, keeping any of this from him is tantamount to accusing him of being petty or callous enough to pull such a move.

You can only stare in disappointment at the gruel they pretend on eating, wondering what kind of stubborn pride can lead someone so astray.

"Lemme help ya outta that mess." You tell them, walking besides them and snatching their plates from under their noses. You are making them a favor, really. "Who made this?"

>"I did." Johai says, raising his hand as if he was answering a question in class.

You roll your eyes and drop the dishes into the sink, put your hands on your waist and glare at him.

"Then get yer ass over here and pay attention." You tell him, looking at the pot of desecrated rice and pinching the bridge of your nose. "'cause this thing will get an ambulance called on you, and Ah ain't sure if it'll go to the ER or the morgue."

>"It's... not that... bad?" He tries to defend himself as he walks towards you, under your mentor's watchful gaze.

"It's not any good, that's what it is." You fire back, grabbing the pot and pouring the sludge into the sink. "Now let's get a proper meal done before lunchtime. Ah'm thinking rice puddin', somethin' kinda like this but, ya know, actually good."

It's not hard for you to speak of cooking while you are doing it, explaining why everything is done the way it's done and how you know when to stop stirring and cooking, with the only thing you kept to yourself being why you took a minute to read every inch of text on the milk carton.

It takes something over half an hour, but the process helps get your nerves at ease and ends with a great smelling brunch, leaning to dessert.

It's all great, considering what you are about to ask. You really wouldn't like to botch your words this time, so you steel yourself and prepare do it properly.

"Sir, there's something I need to ask." You start, standing up after the last pair of chopsticks is laid down.

>"Go ahead. What is it, Walker?" The elder ninja inquires with that calm and collected tone that makes you wonder if he doesn't already know what you are about to ask.

"Some of my friends were injured during their internships last night, and are now recovering from their wounds at Hosu General Hospital." You tell him, then bow down, holding your arms by your side. "I want to be here and learn as much as I can, but I really want to visit them today..."

Looking up between locks of your hair, you can see that Johai looks somewhat surprised, while Edgeshot just nods.

>"I figured. I got notice to be careful with the student interns and to keep you all in sight and away from danger until the internships are finished. It went without saying, but it was obvious that something went awry yesterday." The hero says, sighing. "Go, and don't worry about arriving late this one time. I still need to figure out what to do with you from now on."

Hearing that, you raise with a smile, but keep your arms to your sides and your manners in check.

"Thank you, sir." You say earnestly and with a second, smaller bow.

>"What about our morning training?" Johai asks.
>>

Eyy, glad my write-in was a hit.

But one thing bothers me and I wanted to set the record straight so I'm not coming across as a complete weeb shill.

Ushi is a dual heritage kiddo. Sometimes doing the Japanese thing is in character for her, sometimes it's not.

If things were a little different and she thought Shoto was in critical condition, for example, she'd probably have been a bit more stereotypical American and simply declared she was going and that's that; God help anyone who gets in her way.

But this seemed like good fit for trying to do things the polite, professional way.

I have no real ending for this line of thought, so . . .

PLUS. ULTRA.

I agree wholeheartedly with this sentiment. I believe that side of her along with her social inadequacies are two really nice catalysts for drama and points of growth for Ushi and it provides her an interesting perspective compared to her classmates/contemporaries. In addition I feel like that emotional side of her should show through more.

In a similar vein, I feel like Ushi could have (or should have but haven't yet) been more aligned with Bakugo on our approach (very direct) of certain things but perhaps that is to come now that his ego is (will be?) more in check. Sometimes a rock is a rock and they only way around it is through it.

I am of mixed feelings towards emphasizing her Amercian side explicitly though as I believe a long-term goal was to emphasize our Japanese half better on behalf of Mom. So it comes down to this really fine balance of allowing her innate American spontaneity to thrive as a hero while continue to appeal towards specific traditional (conservative?) sentiments. So its like...be American when Ushi can get away with it but also not just then too because that would be really safe and boring thus spoiling the whole effort? Its kind of like our current social statuses. We and Ushi want to improve them but we can't not get them better without risking them going the opposite way. I want Ushi to push her luck but its hard to determine when its appropriate/ in character to do so outside of really obvious situations.

Anywho,

"Thank you, sir." You repeat, bowing once more.

...Before shedding that mask of formality.

"Ya know, this gruel y'all were thinkin' of eatin' made me think of hospital food! Nasty stuff that!" You say, first wiping your forehead and then grabbing Johai's arm, pulling on him as you stomp towards the kitchen once more. "Ah'm sure Ah could whip up some nice grub for lunch… For y'all too, of course. Ain't gonna risk THAT again so soon, and you are comin' with me. Ya could stand to learn a bit more!"

>"Pretty sure I have better things to do." He complains, pulling away from you and stepping back.

"Nonsense! This is a life skill!" You fire back, pointing straight at his nose, then at the kitchen area. "So go get your ass in there!"

>"...Fine. But stop touching me." Johai replies after a pause, glaring at you for another second before walking over.

"A pie would be nice! Or cookies!" You list some options, before sighing and slouching over. "...Really wishin' Ah could bake worth a damn. Bento will 'ave to do, cold soba 'nd..."

Yeah. You have no clue about what the other two like. Maybe soba for everyone would be okay, even though it wouldn't be as special...

As you ponder what to do, you notice your mentor leaving. It makes sense, he has no more business with you for now, but all that he's been saying lately has made it clear you have no idea what he'll have you do after all this.

Thus, you skip towards him.

"Sir! Wait!" You yell as you approach him. "What's all that ya were talkin' 'bout before? Not knowin' what to do with us 'nd all that? 'nd the petty crime thing! What's up with that!?"

>"I told you already, I am to keep you out of danger." He says, waving his hand at both you and Johai. "The rest I'll explain tonight, most likely. It's more of a lesson in hero work than something to talk about right now. Be patient and maybe you'll figure it out before then."

"Oh." You let out as you take a step back, wondering what tonight's lesson might be about.

Still, you have plenty to do already… How to go about it now though...

I guess i was coming from the place of we dont have the time to make three personalized meals and still hit the other schedule points we have already although that may have been a misunderstanding on my part of how long cold soba takes.
>>
>>4019290
Perhaps cold soba + cookies? Lida might not go for it tho...
>>
We could just ask Uraraka what they usually bring to lunch. She eats with them regularly, so she probably remember. Even if its not their favourite, at last we would know its something they enjoy
>>
>>4019290
Well, we didn't say we were going to drop everything and go to the hospital. We said we'd go as soon as we got the chance. We can take the time to find out what they like and make a meal for each - and if we want to, we can personalize it for too with ketchup and 'get well soon'.
I just didn't like the idea of making one thing special for only one of them, and making a 'basic' dish for the other two. I didn't think Ushi was the kind of girl to tier her friends that much.

While you don't know what you'll do about the other two pals at the hospital, you know exactly what Shoto will like, having worked on making soba from scratch before.

"Ever seen someone make soba from scratch?" You cockily ask Johai, strutting back to the kitchen. "Web was full 'o cowards say it's hard, but Ah nailed it first try last time!"

>"The mixed flours version is not that hard." Johai dismissively comments, waving you off.

You then glare at him and point at the sink, still with some bits of desecrated rice stuck to the side.

>"...or so I've heard." He amends, shrugging.

"Now wait here for a second! Did ya know that without gluten this thing doesn't hold together? You gotta cut it with the best there is!" You point out before running back to your room.

You quickly dive into your backpack and pull out one of the matchboxes inside, peek in to confirm it's contents and dash back into the kitchen, placing it over the counter.

After waiting for your upperclassman to look at the matchbox before grabbing it and enlarging it, large enough so that it's once miniaturized contents return to their standard size.

The fact that he could do something very similar didn't cross your mind until you saw his very unimpressed face.

"Anyway, you gotta cut this stuff." You say, pulling put a bag of buckwheat flour and the bottle of leftover sauce you used last time you made soba, and the suitcase of knives Momo gave you for your birthday, all from a matchbox.

You then pull a bowl out of the pantry and start your work, confident that it won't take more than half an hour at most.

Water, flour and kneading in a bowl is nothing strange, but buckwheat dough is always dry and crumbly so you need to pay attention to what you are doing.

"Now you knead it more and make it into a circle." You tell Johai, dropping the dough on the counter and kneading it some more, focusing more on his reaction than the dough. "Then into a cone, you smush it and..."

>"Is the crumbling to bits part the next step?" Johai asks, crouching and looking at the dusty dough.

"N-no." You answer, quickly shifting your focus to the dough, quickly scrambling for some starch to sprinkle on it and get the dough to come back together, to no avail.

It's ruined, and you aren't even fully sure what went wrong.

You pinch the bridge of your nose and glare at the damn dough, blowing steam off your nose.

"A-OK. New lesson." You say, pivoting on your heels and looking at Johai.

>"What is it?" He asks.

"When to give up and try again." You answer, grabbing the dough and dunking it into the trashcan.

You take a second to wash the bowl and at the same time, the frustration off you.

"Okay, now we'll do it right." You say, stomping your foot on the floor and huffing the last of your frustrations away.

>"Are you okay?" Johai asks, more interested in your knives than the dish in the making.

"Ah ah'm now." You say, starting anew with your cooking. "Watch carefully, cuz Ah won't be watchin' you no more."

The steps are the same, mixing, kneading, flattening into a circle…

But this time you keep a keen eye on the dough, alternating between sprinkling starch on it and wetting your hands under the sink to keep dough fresh and together, yet strong enough.

"Then you cone it up…" You say as you do it, placing the cone atop the counter before placing your hand atop it and flattening it into a uniform dough disk.

You then fold it up, like a very fat snake before snatching one of your knives out of Johai's hand and slicing the dough into thick noodles.

"Now comes the importantest part!" You exclaim, looking at the precious noodles.

The bowl of cold water and ice next to the sink and the pot of salt and water to cook the noodles in, the secret for them to actually be cold soba.

A single minute of cooking before straining them, rinsing them and dunking them into the cold is all it takes. Cold Soba, finally.

"And this is the last detail." You tell Johai, grabbing the small bowl of ice water and scent of buckwheat, with some smaller noodles having been thoroughly dissolved in it. "The sobayu! After all the noodles are gone, you can mix what's left of the tsuyu, that-will-never-not-sound-weird, with it and make a soup to wash it all down!

You scoop the soba out and place it on a small plastic container, shoving it into the freezer for now. It needs to be cold.

Looking around, you ignore the ninja playing with your knives and try to decide what to do for the other two stabbed boys.

"While you are there, hand me the chef's knife… And try to be careful, those are really, really sharp." You tell the ninja, blindly reaching behind you.

Luckily, a knife's handle lands perfectly in your open hand, allowing you to continue your happy cooking streak.

While chicken soup is good for the wounded of body and soul, you opt for a more japanese take. Thus, you set up a pot with rice, but don't put it on the stove yet.

"There's not many things Ah can bring 'nuff of to the 'Glad you didn't get yourself killed' party." You say, effortless twirling the knife between your fingers. "Gyūdon! Mah momma used to alternate it with the chicken soup whenever Ah had to stay in bed and sleep off an illness."

>"Happened too often?" Johai asks, surprising you.

"Uh, not really." You answer as you gather the ingredients from around the kitchen. Nothing close to complex. Some beef, onions and eggs. "Ah don't get sick much. Ah'm more of a broke sumthin' doing sumthin' dumb kinda gal."

It's, in the end, a simple comfort food, barely a soup really.

>"How come I'm not surprised." The upperclassman sasses, prompting you to roll your eyes and grunt.

"Just stop playing with the knives and help me chop this here stuff." You chastise him, tossing a spare chopping board in his direction, followed by some green onions after he catches the board.

As you work on the beef, swiftly cutting the beef into small pieces, you can't help but notice the difference between your styles.

His cuts are parallel, fast yet just as strong as needed, making no sound but that of the onions splitting into slices.

Yours, on the other hand, are as fast if not faster, but that's where the similarities end. All of his slices are identical, your meat cuts are chaotic and messy, with the knife rhythmically hitting your board with a satisfying sound as you shred the meat into pieces roughly the right size for perfect cooking.

You cook the onions till tender before throwing the meat into the pan, the largest pan you could find. It wouldn't be far off to think of it as the crossbreed between a Wok and a Pan.

A Panwok.

"'s missin' sumthin'." You comment as the now golden onion slices and beef's smell doesn't quite fit the caramel-like one you expected.

>"Rice and all the booze?" Johai asks, not being quite wrong.

"Well, that too, but not what Ah meant." You say, sniffing around and following your nose to the cupboard, taking out the sugar jar and taking a handful, then throwing it into the pan. "Sweetness!"

You then crack half a dozen eggs atop it too.

>"I'm starting to think that I'll be better off skipping lunch." Your cooking buddy complains, looking at the white powder clumped over the meat and the eggs sloughing to the sides of the pan.

"Just you wait~" You reply, snatching the sake and mirin and pouring it over the sugar, washing it away. "Almost done…"
>>
After a quick splash of onions sauce, you consider it done, grabbing a wooden spoon and stirring lightly until the meat is no longer pink and the slightly sweet smell of the meat and onions mixes wonderfully with the eggs's, causing the meal's delectable aroma to waft around the kitchen.

"That's how it's done!" You yell with excitement, taking the wokpan off the fire and next to the pot o rice, letting all the extra juiceness flow into the rice before setting the pot on the stove.

You have very little to do with the rest, as the rice would need an utter moron to mess up rice. Then you just put the rice on the boxes, then the meat, onions and eggs over it.

After a little more time to make it look pretty, you have 4 cute bento boxes, including the cold soba, ready and wrapped along with enough leftovers for the ninjas to not die while you are out.

The way to Hosu wasn't anything to talk about, as the people in the are still seem shook. Hard to blame them, as your own skin crawls when your train passes next to a cordoned off area, a small park burnt down and with the broken and melted remains of what might have been playground. Harrowing.

Entering the hospital wasn't hard either, as the front desk tells you the room to go to after having your bentos checked.

Then you make it up to their room. With the door open, you can see the boys sitting on their beds, talking.

They are all more or less covered in bandages and casts. Deku has a crutch next to him, and his arms are entirely bandaged, Iida's arms are on casts and on a sling.

Compared to them, Shotos bandaged forearms look fairly moderate.

The most important thing is that they haven't seen you.

Many thoughts tempt you at the sight of your injured classmates.

A small part of you wants to go over and smack him for making you worry, another larger one wants to just go over there and squeeze them all until they need some more casts while yet another even larger one wants to go over to him and hug him tight, being glad he's okay.

But after a second of deliberation, you know what to do.

"Howdy guys!" You say as you slowly walk into their room with a smile, holding up your bags. "Ah brought lunch… 's not much, but Ah thought y'all could use a quick pickmeup."

You aren't at all surprised when the first thing that happens is Deku's phone flying off his lap, nor the second being him trying to snatch off the air before it inevitably hits the floor.

You might have giggled at that.

>"Walker!" Iida exclaims standing up, but quickly covering his mouth and coughing. "Eto… I mean, it's certainly nice to see you, but you didn't have to come."

>"Thank you for coming." Follows up Shoto, standing up as well and walking up to you, extending his bandaged arm. "Do you need help? You brought all of that from Yokkaichi, after all."

After a second of silence, the three of you, Iida, Shoto and yourself, turn to Deku.

>"Uh, hi!" The green haired wreck of a boy greets you, waving this entire cast-covered forearm.

"Ah brought…" You start, placing the bags on what feels like a stainless steel nightstand and pulling four plastic bento boxes.

"Cold Soba for you." You tell Shoto, handing him the cold pasta, still with some ice shards. "Ah hope it's as good as last time."

Then pull the other three, simple transparent ones, full still with warm gyūdon, handing one to Deku, then one to Iida, keeping the last one for yourself.

"And this is for us to share!" You comment, nodding as they all open them. "Hope y'all like beef stew."

If nothing else, their smiles as they open the boxes and the smell hits their noses makes it worth the trip.

Your own stomachs' growl then reminds you of the reason why you brought one for yourself. You are famished yourself.

Time for a good lunch n' chat!

"Heh. Smells good, doesn't it?" You say, chuckling and patting your growling abdomen with a sheepish grin.

>"Uh, yeah." Deku replies, being the awkward ball of anxiety and bone mending tissue.

>"I am sorry for making you come all the way here." Shoto says, then looks at his box. "But it seems like it was worth it."

>"It's as expected and better." Iida ads, as happy as you have ever seen him, despite his injuries.

It's hard to not reply in kind with a wide smile of your own.

"Mind if Ah take a seat?" You ask the taller boy, leaning towards him and holding your own box.

>"Ano… Not at all!" He says, looking away for a second, then scooting to the side, letting you sit next to him, in front of Shoto and Deku.

"So ah heard you were the first of y'all to go against this psycho… How was it?" You ask, being the first to take out your spork. "Ah reckon' it'd be like the USJ again, but without the teachers."

As much as they look like metalcraft mishaps, it's hard to overstate how useful a spork is when you don't want clutter.

For a few seconds, you get to watch the cheerful demeanor slough off his face, settling into a dour expression.

>"I'm grateful for all the help I got." He says, looking straight at the floor, his glasses sliding down his nose. "As hard as it is to say, I'm sure I wouldn't have made it on my own."

While you don't doubt it's true, as the guy had the record for the largest number of heroes killed by an individual, it sounds… incomplete.

"Can't believe there's so many bastards aimin' to kill kids…" You then comment, shaking your head.

>"...He wasn't really trying." Shoto corrects you, taking a break from loudly slurping his noodles with a straight face.

>"Yeah. Even between the three of us… It was pretty clear he was just trying to scare us away." Deku ads, his analytical mind pushing his nervousness away.

"Ah'm all for standin' your ground, but Ah'm pretty sure that runnin' would 'ave been the smart thing to do." You reply, raising an eyebrow and keeping the 'Not that Ah would 'ave run either'' part to yourself.

>"He had the local hero Native, and made it clear that he would kill him as soon as we stopped bothering him." Iida explains, looking at the ceiling. "I caught him in the act and tried to defeat him… Taking Native and running away as fast as I could with my Recipro Burst would have been the correct thing to do. The heroic thing to do."

"Hey, you did it to save someone! Taking a beating, 'nd stabbin' Ah guess, for someone ya don't know is like the textbook definition of heroic!" You say, patting his shoulder and trying to cheer him up again.

Then he leans towards you- no, on you, with the side of his head coming to rest on your shoulder.

>"...No. I-it wasn't." He says, sounding like he's failing to hold back tears.

At least there's only two more people here to stare at what's going on.

Because stare they do.

I think we should change our name, it's literally just japanese for cow and no matter how you put it that's insulting and dehumanizing. Cow is either the name of cattle or an insult for fat unattractive women and no matter what we do the japanese aren't going to change their dictionary just for us. This flies into the face of the idea that we should accept our bovine heritage without letting it define us since that's literally what the name does and makes people ignore the rest. Pa may have thought it's cute but he only got away with it because it was in America, i doubt the government would've allowed the name Cow Walker. I also think this should be done later since there are more pressing issues at the moment.

Glad you ask!
There's two ways, depending on what you try to accomplish!

1) You are misinterpreted! Like, in this hug, your intentions may be mistaken.

2) You don't get the information you are looking for! You may not get the wanted details of the event.

Also I just realized, if the quirks popped up worldwide what happened to all the isolated tribes in places such as the Amazon or the North Sentinel Island? You shoot everyone else in the room a look that anyone with any people experience would identify as a si lent cry for help.

But Deku only starts looking hurt himself, looking down, probably beating himself over as well.

Shoto just tilts his head, as clueless about how to handle this as you are yourself.

As as far as your long sixteen years of life have gone (it has felt long to you!), you have only been on the other end of the whole 'crying your heart out over someone's shoulder', if that's what's happening.

But that is still some experience you can call upon, right?

Shifting a bit on your seat, you wrap your arm around his shoulders, pulling him closer to you and resting your chin atop his head.

"...There there, sugah. Ya did your best, what else needs to be said?" You tell him, patting his shoulder.

>"I could only think of what he did to my brother, and what I wanted to do to him. He left Tensei critical, never to fully recover…" You hear him say, his voice less shaky yet a bit muffled. "I wanted to leave him worse. Two meters underground. I didn't want to stop a villain, I was after revenge."

You had heard something about that, but you didn't know that his brother was one of his victims! Yet, you don't bring that up. Not the time.

There's a few seconds, half a minute of silence before you can put together what to say.

"...Would you do that again?" You ask him, running your hand over his shoulder and down his hand, giving him yours to grab for reassurance. "Would you still go for the kill, leavin' the victims behind?"

He gently, almost shakily, takes it, raising and sitting straight up again.

>"No. Never again." He says firmly and confidently, as if someone had gone and gave an adrenaline shot while you weren't looking. "It was just a shameful mistake. I stumbled, but from now on I will truly walk the path of the hero!"

"That settles it then, sugah! Nobody expects us to know what to do on our own yet, we're still just first year students." You tell him with a candid smile, pulling back your hand from his. It takes a second tug. "Ah reckon' we 'ave years of mistakes yet to make, no sense beatin' yourself over 'em, you just gotta pick yourself back up and keep moving, that's what heroes do."

You seal the deal with a pat on the back.

Looking around now, you aren't sure what Shoto might be thinking. Nothing new.
Deku though, looks incredibly confused, somewhat pink too.

However, and more importantly, they aren't eating.

"Well then, don't let it cool down!" You tell them all, picking up your bento and menacingly pointing at the boys with your spork.

>"Alright then!" Iida says, picking up his and starting to eat with a smile on his face.
>>
>"...It is cold soba. You even served it with ice." Shoto comments, tilting his bento to show you the contents. He then pokes it and covers the plasting in frost. "And, you know. It is a non issue."

"...Bless yer heart, sugah." You reply after a second of blank staring, having decided not to bother.

But she could be EVEN MORE RIPPED! Remember that 490 pound weight? Well instead of "just" deadlifting it we could go further and beyond PLUS ULTRA and all that. Unless we use steroids she isn't going to lose her feminine beuty and look like a man. Also on another note I there's a character in Battle Angel Alita that used ball bearings like bullets, perhaps we could get a pouch of the stuff like him, for when the enemy is really, really far away we just flick a ball using our combined steam and muscle power, we could also learn a method of enlarging our whip individually like we did with our limbs and then shrinking it.

You stay close to Iida as you eat, making quick work of your cooling meal, thankful of the smell of the food, covering up all the hospital-smells.

It's good that you aren't the only one wolfing down her dish, as all of them get to it with the voracious appetite that only hospitalized people can have, mainly due to the tasteless gruel they must have had to endure for dinner and breakfast.

"So how are y'all mentors? Ah’m gonna try an’ learn one’a them jutsu from Edgeshot! Substi… Substit-Ushi Jutsu! Ah’ve been too embarrassed to ask if chakra’s fer real yet though." You ask as soon as the sporks are lowered, eager to talk more with some of your classmates. You then quickly glance at Shoto before adding "You know, as a learnin' experience, not necessarily personal stuff!"

>"I guess that falls within Edgeshot's portfolio." Deku comments, scratching his chin. "He is more renowned for his ability to quickly infiltrate anywhere and use his speed and misdirection techniques take out villains before they can retaliate…"

>"I do not have much to tell." Shoto replies, the first to answer, already back on edge and looking at his hand. "The bastard blocked me out of logistics and anything that related with learning his Flashfire technique. It will be useful, but it is very complex and I am far from mastering it. Burnin' has been far more helpful with getting the basics of my fires."

>"That's great Todoroki!" The green haired boy comments again, visibly excited. "Endeavor's Flashfire is known to be able to vaporize concrete and steel and cut through entire buildings! That would be an excellent addition to your repertoire!"

"Hehe… Yeah…" You nervously add, once again being made aware of the kind of literal firepower in the room. Not that you think anything but the best of your friends, but it's hard to keep fears in check.

The three of you then look at Iida, who just takes a second to slide his glasses back up his nose.

>"Manual... " He starts with a sigh, worrying you for a second before he smiles again. "All I can tell you is that he is a great guy and did his best to try and help me and tried to talk me out of going after Stain. I'll make sure to write him a proper apology though!"

You sigh, relieved that he didn't fall apart.

>"I can't believe I never even heard of Gran Torino before this!" Deku tells the three of you, his normal shyness overwritten by sheer excitement.

>"The weird little old man?" Shoto asks, swiftly taking the wind off Deku's sails.

>"...Yes. I-I guess that fits." He says, trying to regain his composure. "He understood my quirk better than I did myself! With Full Cowl, I'll finally be able to start making real progress!"

He then strikes a pose, lifting his fist…

...It'd be impressive if he wasn't covered in multiple casts and wearing a hospital gown.

You can only tilt your head, looking around and trying to figure out where to start with all you want to know.

After a second deep in thought, you decide to start with Deku's tangle of enigmas.

"How come you went with Gran Torino Deku, if you hadn't heard of 'em?" You ask, tapping your chin and looking at the mop-haired boy.

>"U-uh… W-well, he sent me a scountin' letter…" He says, sweating bullets, somehow melting down at such a simple question, especially with that simple of an answer.

"...That makes sense." You comment, looking down for a second.

>"He certainly wasn't in the school provided list." Continues Iida with a wave of his hands.

"So, how's this Gran Torino fella? And what's full cowl?... And what does makin' real progress mean?..." You start listing questions, tilting your head ever more, until your ears are parallel to the floor "Really sugah, Ah think ya just left me with more questions there."

You are pretty sure this kid has more than a single quirk, because he looks like he's about to melt under your pretty soft interrogation, turning into a being of pure sweat.

Or maybe it's just his skin crying. That'd make some measure of sense.

>"W-well, he's just very wise." He says, looking around with puffed cheeks, as if he actually wanted to say something but couldn't.

"You said he knew your quirk better than yourself." You point out, shamelessly trying to pry the gossip out of him. "You gotta admit that's kinda odd."

>"...and he taught All-Might!" He continues, cracking under pressure with a shine in his eyes before regret sets in. "I-I mean, superstrength quirks are all similar, right!? He's just the best teacher for them."

You and Shoto then share a glance, the same thought and suspicion crossing your minds.

>"Well, then it's wonderful that he chose you, Midoriya." Iida tells him after coughing to break the newfound silence. "You need to make the most of this opportunity!"

>"I am!" Deku says, less shaky now. "With his help, I developed Full Cowl!"

"...Sugah, you still haven't told us what that is." You meekly point out, trying to no innervate him again.

The poor boy can only blink twice in silence before chuckling sheepishly and answering, properly this time.

>"Well, I think you all know my quirk gives me more strength than my body can currently handle on it's own, being 15 meters tall that one time aside." Starts, flashing you a smile when he reaches that last part. "With Full Cowl, I spread the power all across my body at once, while reducing the output to manageable levels. Superhuman power without breaking anything!"

"...So, the crutch…" You say, leaning closer to his face.

>"...I got a bit carried away during the fight!" He says, raising his arms to cover his face, then mutters. "Good thing Endeavor showed up and fixed it all up…"

>"Beats dying." Is all the complements Shoto can spare for his old man.

"One more question then…" You say, as somberly as you can, leaning ever closer.
>>
>"Y-yes?" He asks, being cute in a way only timid, smaller boys seem able to be.

"You gotta tell me how you got these guns!" You say, throwing your somber facade away to throw him off balance and grabbing his mostly healthy arm, poking the solid muscle under the skin. It's honestly impressive, considering how tiny and meek he is…

>"W-well, it's really a personalised training plan. I don't think it would translate well to anyone else, especially with…" He starts, then looks somewhat scared, like you were going to be offended by the notion that boys and girls don't work quite the same. "Such different bodytypes?"

"Well, dang." You say, pulling the short sleeve of your top up to your shoulder and flexing, showing the result of your hard training. "Ah was lookin' to up mah game…"

For some reason, Iida stands up.

>"Well, I'm not an expert by any means, much less on arms and upper body, but if you would ever want company while training, I would be glad to run to… by your side." Iida offers with a slight stutter. "If you have the time and want to, that is."

>"Not on mondays though." Shot chimes in, monotonous as always. "She comes to my home to train after class. …'Father' has plans."

Iida seems to deflate a little at that.

>"Yes, of course. Wouldn't want to impose." He says, sitting down again, glasses sliding down for a fraction of a second before he pushes them back up.

Odd.

You then take out your phone, choosing to ignore the mess that is your chats for now and opening your chat with Shoto.

"Who did'ya say helped you with your fire again, Shoto, sugah?" You ask him looking up the cryptic thing.

>"Burnin'" He answers with the name.

"This gal, by any chance?" You say, showing him the picture, taking a modicum of care to not show it to anyone else.

>"Yes, that's her. And me." He answers again. "She took my phone and sent that."

"...Why?" You ask again, trying to get to the bottom of the what-the-heck well.

>"She's certain you aren't my friend." He answers, looking bothered by it all, at least to your trained eye. "She thinks that, in her words, you want 'something more' but 'can't bring yourself to take it', and she wanted to help with a push."

For a brief second, everything went so quiet that you are certain you heard someone drop a needle in the floor below.

Then both Deku and Iida fall prey to a mysteriously coordinated coughing fit, both requiring to look away.

'AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! WHAT AH'M S'POSED TO SAY!?...' You yell and scream inside your head. There's hardly room for a rational thought between your horns, but pretending to be okay might as well be your second quirk.

"Yeah Ah met a real piece of work at mah internship too." You answer with a serene smile, but loud enough to be heard over the sudden bout of pneumonia both Deku and Iida seem to be suffering from. "Edgeshot had another intern! Can ya believe it! A Seijin High Second year! With a quirk like mine no less! He was a bit of a jerk when we met, but he's nicer when you get to know him! Just a stick in the mud, not really a bad guy!"

'...AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! WHY DID AH ASK HIM ABOUT THAT IN HERE!? WITH OTHERS!?...' The cacophony in your mind continues even as the boys stop coughing and look back, somewhat flushed, a bit mortified.

>"Uh… L-like Kacchan!" Deku comments with a nod, trying to look nonchalant and failing miserably.

"No? Johai's nice." You shoot back. "Ah'd just get him away from the kitchen for a while..."

>"A similar quirk you say? You mean like Kirishima's and that boy from class B?" Iida ask, seemingly interested in your words.

"Not that close sugah, but almost. No need to touch stuff, but he only enlarges stuff." You explain. "He's a bit stiff with it too, but Ah think he's gettin' better."

>"I figured it wouldn't have been too similar." The bespectacled boy continues. "I would've been surprised if you had met someone else with such an amazing quirk."

"Ain't nothing quite like <Everythin' is Bigger in Texas>!" You boast on instinct alone. "Anyway, guy went and picked the name <Trickshot>! Very close to Edgeshot's, don'tcha think?"

>"There's nothing wrong with wanting to be close to your heros…" Deku mutters, flashing a sheepish smile when he notices you’ve raised an eyebrow.

"Of course not sugah." You reply, feeling like your brain is trying to get away from this all through your ears. "Ah think we are friendly now…"

'...AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!?!? AH NEED TO THINK. OR TALK WITH MOMO. OR MINA. OR MOMMA!?'

>"Are you alright?" Shoto asks, reaching for you and placing his cool right hand on your forehead. "I hope you have not caught anything here in the hospital."

>"What do you mean, Todoroki?" Deku asks.
"Her face is off color and her breathing is too fast." Shoto replies, unblinking.

You shiver. You like to think it's because of his cold hand.

We should ask.

Supporting this. I think that if we leave now it wouldvmake things awkward

I mean it is, but I'm not sure why we reveal it now.

Just thought I'd mention it

Anyway speaking of fire our fear of it is classified as a phobia right? I think we should work towards fixing it since it has already caused social issues like Ushi imagining Shoto burning her alive during the festival. Villains could also just throw molotov cocktails at her y'know? I'm not asking for her to be a firefighter just that she's not paralyzed with fear while dealing with fire
>>
>>4039739
I think it's not quite a phobia. Our skeleton can and will burn and turn us into slow cooked brisket if it catches fire. Short of finding some way to laminate our skeleton, I think it's something we'll always be afraid of.
>>
>>4039776

So it's a rational phobia, and to be honest, we already made progress from the start...
Now we only need to make saves only when the fire endargers us! Wich is most of the time we have to roll but still...
>>
Living wood doesn't burn any better than living flesh: they are both full of water. Ushi's soft bits are at more risk because skin is only a thin, easily damaged layer of protection over body fat, which is much more flammable than katsura wood.

Even dry hardwood can't exactly be accidentally caught on fire by briefly being in an open flame, you need either an especially hot flame or a long exposure. The exceptions being the odd oily woods prized as kindling, and katsura isn't oily.

So yea, it's a phobia. Unless she has some peculiar accelerant-infused katsura wood for bones, she isn't any more susceptible to fire than humans.

She'd be losing teeth willy nilly, though. Unless they have some kind of super hard coating like regular bone teeth do.

Ushi's wooden skeleton is made of a japanese wood, a wood that burns very easily.
It is actually known to burn easily
>>
Rolled 6, 3, 10, 5, 5, 4, 10 = 43 (7d10)

>>4037795
When we leave, hugs all around too. In fact, do the hug that we should have done when we came in, to provide them with extra casts and more bed rest. Wrestling is 7d10s right?
>>
>>4040671
It's Katsura wood.

And I can't find anything anywhere about it being especially flammable.

It's used for fancy carpentry and shoes, is a joy to work with, has big cultural significance throughout China and Japan, but nowhere have I seen any reference to it being known for its flammability.

Closest I could find is it's smell has been described as "burnt sugar".

If anyone can set the record straight with info on how wet, living katsura wood is somehow easy to burn, then she has good reason to fear.

Otherwise: I don't think so, Tim.

in universe it was mentioned by Momo specifically, reread the part of the test on day 1, before we knocked out bakugou
>>
>>4040758
Well, then there's only one reasonable thing to do:

Grow my own Katsura wood and prove whether or not Momo is a liar.
>>
>>4040777
doesn't matter, in universe is different to ours.
something about comicbook/manga rules, in the end Present Mic is the absolute authority
>>
>>4040782

Sort of, but not really.

I was kind of joking before, but I got time to kill so let's do this:

Willful suspension of disbelief and participation is the absolute authority, and Present Mic is the final court of appeal on what best upholds that and maintains an interesting fiction that people continue to enjoy and participate in. Long may we benefit from his good judgment and writing skill.

If he was writing a novel you'd be more right, though. He'd be absolute ruler then, but the size of his kingdom would still depend on how many people liked it.

Also, the one time she's had her only exposed bones, her horns, introduced to fire she failed to burst into flames or continue to burn on her own at all. So trying to make Momo's brief statement mean that Ushi is definitely a walking fire hazard contrary to common sense seems like a mistake and an overreach.

Best I can come up with to justify her fear is that Ushi can't recover from fire damage as well as non-wooden people can. That's reasonably consistent with what's happened so far, anyway. We haven't seen anything that would mean she fears fire the way Scarecrow from Oz does.
>>
>>4040867
I mean, she’s somewhat traumatized from that time she was set on fire.
>>
>>4040867
calm down man, don't go full on 'Literary Theory' on me, i was stating my opinion on the matter and as long as i am fine with 'people that are half frog or cow walking around with men who can burst into flame without burning themselfs' then a wooden skeleton can not only cook someone from the inside but also actually work
so spare me suspention of disbelief

Got some stuff to do before I can sit down and update but I'll answer this.

While Momo said that it
>"burns hotter and longer than most, making it one of the best woods to cook with."

Katsura, specially living is not specially prone to catching fire. It just smells like burnt candy, and you smell sweet.

Ushi has been told plenty of times she won't catch fire and she knows it's not logical.

She also knows 2 people supposedly able to melt concrete with their flames and a jerk able to cause detonations, and thus supersonic flames.

It's not a rational fear, but she rationalises it.
>>
>>4041021
fair enough, i was corrected

i will now attempt to make up for my failure by commiting sudoku
>>
Yeah... No time for a vote here, is there?
Will need ...a new thread soon.
>>
>>4041021
Man when Ushi meet the blue flame villain now that is gonna be a traumatic to her.
>>
Has Ushi ever said the n word?
>>
>>4041021
Then I will continue to rationalize it. I like the fear of it, honestly.
>>
>>4041313
Of course she has! She's from Texas!
Everyone says Northerner all the time!
>>
>>4041313
She has being nagged before, so yes?
