After dismissing some odd, uncharacteristic thoughts you pick out some items.

You purchase:
>2 ropes
>10 candles
>1 shovel
>4 holy water
for 240 Talons
you now have 134

Goblin Trader: "Thanks a lot! Feel free to come by and inspect my goods any time."
>"That uh, probably wont be necessary miss. Thank you for your business."
She waves goodbye as you exit the hut.
Ulric: "What did you get? A shovel?"
>"Just some basic equipment, and some Holy Water for the undead later on."
Alina: "I asked the goblins, and they say the Chuuls could be arriving tonight. We may be able to ambush them."
Shawel: "We would be fighting on the shore then. I can unleash my full power if we fight by (or in) the river."
Ulric: "Wont the Chuuls be powered up in the water too?"
Alina: "I've heard they're pretty slow swimmers for aquatic monsters."

Not wasting any time in the goblin hamlet you decide to prepare an ambush further down the river.
After you've put some distance between yourself and the village there's no sign of giant lobster bug snake thingies.
You feel a sense of forboding. They're close, you can feel it in your bones.
Up ahead you can see the beginning of the White Tortoise Woods.

You stop the party for a moment to take in your surroundings.

(Listen Success)
You here some slight movement a shortish distance away. A pair of goblins have been trailing you and are hiding in the vegetation. But you don't think they were what was giving you a bad feeling.

(Spot Success)
A dark shape hardly visible in the water is swimming towards you. Looks like trouble.

>"Somethings coming."
You prepare to defend yourself.
The dark shape draws closer and stands up, emerging from the river's surface. Water cascades from it's hulking form. A Chuul with a deep blue shell lunges forward trying to grab you with it's claw.
You leap back out of its reach and smash its claw for 15 damage. Its shell is tough!
Ulric: "A chuul!"
Alina: "Kill it!"
Shawel: "Watch out, there might be more of them!"

The creature wades onto the shore and prepares to attack again.

You decide the best thing is to overwhelm the Chuul, smashing through its shell with heavy attacks.

Chuul Power Attacks you with its claw for 20 damage
Chuul Attacks Ulric with its claw for 12 damage

You Power Attack but fail to get a solid hit. It's a big target but it's quick and the shell easily deflects any glancing hit.
Ulric attacks the Chuul's claw getting a critical hit! doing 15 damage and crippling the limb.
Ulric attacks the Chuul for 3 damage
Shawel casts Watershot, a orb of ultra compressed water rockets from the river hitting the Chuul for 14 damage.
Alina shoots the monster for 5 damage.

~

Chuul grabs Ulric with its claw, squeezing him in it's vice like grip.
You power attack the enemy for 20 damage.
Shawel casts Watershot doing 28 damage, this time punching a big hole in its midsection.

It collapses to the ground, with its horrid blood oozing into the grass.
Ulric struggles and squirms free of its grip.

Shawel: "Yes, we should try to eliminate them while they're divided!"
Alina: "My bow does nothing against their heavy shells, maybe I should focus on my magic?"
Ulric: "You've been using that weapon and armour since before I even joined this party. You should change your gear. There's spare Iron Armour you could use!"

You give her the Scarlet Bow.
Alina: "You want me to use the red one then?"
>"I want you to decide yourself. You don't need me to micromanage you."
Alina: "ah.."
She looks a little embarassed, you weren't trying to be mean.
>"We all trust in you as an adventurer and companion"
Shawel and Ulric nod in agreement.
Alina: "ha, don't dote on me guys! But if it's up to me... give me the inventory and I'll pick out some gear."
>"Of course, here"

...

Alina equips Arcane Robes and Scarlet Bow. Drinks Chromatic Potion[white].
Alina: "Kneel pathetic mortals, my sorcery is unmatched"
>"Uh..."
Ulric: "Woah you look EVIL Alina"
Shawel: "Very fearsome."

...

You lead your party into the woods, keeping a close eye on the water for more ambushes.
Eventually you reach a wider lakeish part of the river with a steep stream flowing from up the mountain.
Shawel: "Christof, I suspect they creatures' lair is nearby. Shall I investigate underwater?"
>"Go ahead. Be on guard."
Shawel dives in a returns a short while later.
Shawel: "I believe I have found an underwater tunnel that leads into their lair. We would have to travel underwater to get inside."
>"We wont be able to bring any torches then, we'd be blind."
Shawel: "I have enough skill in the elemental art of Fire to produce light."
Ulric: "Still not a great option, fighting on their home turf."

You stand on the banks of the water deciding your next course of action.
In a few hours a number of Chuuls are going to travel to the goblin hamlet in a group to collect the tribute. It's likely that they will be emerging from this lair.

using skeletals as man power you could fell a big tree like the one pictured in earlier updates.
That particular tree is a bit far away from the lair entrance you are now at, but you could probably walk back to it and topple it before the Chuuls move out. There are many similar sized (and smaller) trees in your current location.
>>

No, they might not even go on the shore at all and just swim down the river, if they see you they'll probably go straight for you

>>4009583
Is there some way we could ensure they notice us when they come out?
>>

+1, if the creatures are not intelligent enough to walk away from an obvious trap then this seems good. Dig some pit traps too if time allows. Alina has like 58 in traps
>>
>"Let's set up a defence. Maybe we can make one of these trees into a barricade?"
Ulric: "But we've got no axes!"
>"We can smash chunks off a tree using Shawel's Water Shot and my Magic Missile. We can take one down easy after a while. Hmmm... that one there, let's take it down Shawel."
You open up your spellbook and cast Magic Missile straight from the page, too easy. The bolt of glowing magic energy smacks into the hard wood splintering of several chunks.
Shawel sends a blob of water flying into the tree causing a similar effect.
Ulric: "What can we do?"
>"ummm, make a pitfall trap or something."
Ulric: "I'm not sure I know how to do that."
Alina: "Just dig a pit and cover it with one of the tents, then hide it with some dirt."
Ulric: "I can't dig deep enough to trap a Chuul, that would take ages."
Alina: "Oh, uh.. Shawel do you know any earth spells?"
Shawel takes a momentary break from attacking the tree and looks back over her shoulder.
Shawel: "My papyrus as some earth arts inscribed on it, but I don't have the ability to activate them."
Alina: "oh.. Let's just spread out some caltrops while we wait."
Ulric: "Okay!"

Soon the tree starts to creak and crack, you all scramble in near panic to avoid being flattened.
It crashes to the ground with a fierce shockwave and kicks a cloud of dust into the air.
>"Everyone okay? Let's straighten this log up a bit."
The four of you get into position on one side of the fallen tree. And start trying to push/roll it. It wont budge, at all.
The tree is in the right place but it's sort of on a weird angle. Looks like you wont be able to move it.
Shawel: "Something's coming."
Dark shapes start emerging from the water. Heading straight towards you.
Everyone takes position behind the log and caltrops, while you push one, two, three, four, five dragon teeth into the ground.
Four Chuuls emerge from the river's surface and start sprinting onto land to attack. You barely manage to leap over the log before Ulric casts Fireball doing 34, 17, 34, 34 damage to the four Chuuls.
A cloud of steam envelops the Chuuls.
Alina casts Protect on you.

That monster just struck down Christof in one blow! Is he dead?!
Probably not. Ulric is already trying to heal him, but the chuuls are climbing over the tree.
Alina can't do much harm to them, and without armour she wont be able to last long.
Ulric can defend himself but he's lowered his guard to try and save Christof.
Courage, Shawel. A man controls his fear.
What can you do?
These chuuls are heavily damaged, a few good Watershots could bring any of them down.
They're too heavy to pull with Water Whip, you could probably trip them though.
An Ice Wall could protect Alina and Ulric briefly, but they could smash it down very quickly.
Your Fire arts are very difficult for you to use in a stressful situation. You could try to make a Wall of Fire or wreath your fists in flames but the Watershot is more powerful.
You can't use your Wind and Earth arts at all.

Father would have the strength to strike down all three of them with a single water jet! You don't have that kind of power, but you can still do this:
You place a Ice Wall right in front of the Chuuls. This accidentally disrupts a shot Alina was about to take at one of them. Two of the chuuls immediately trying to smash it down, Chuul(b) turns to you and breaks into a sprint. It's going to lunge!

Better take care of yourself first.

Ulric: "He'll be fine, he just needs to sleep. Let his body fix itself up with the healing energy."

Alina: "I hate seeing him like this."
>"I think it's noble; to keep fighting until you lose conciousness."
Ulric: "We'll have to carry him back."
Ulric gently hoists Christof onto his shoulders.
Ulric: "Ah he's heavier than I thought."
Shawel: "Shall I carry him then."
Ulric: "No I got it!"

It's a slow walk back to the goblin village. You swap carrying Christof with Ulric a couple of times on the way.
It's well after dark by the time you get back, getting closer you see the light of a big bonfire and hear the sound of music.
Approaching the fire you see that the first chuul you killed has been dragged back and roasted for dinner.
Goblins joyously drink dance and gorge themselves on monster meat apparently already aware of your victory.
Fishergoblin: "Hey humans, join us! Celebrate the death of the hated lobster-bug-snakes!"
Ulric: "Ooooh goblin party!"

You're not sure how you feel fraternizing with INHUMAN races, especially one known for villainy.

Ulric: "Are you sure? I can look after him if you want."

You swap to a fresh suit of Iron Armor.
Before leaving you decide to meet with the village shaman.
One of the villagers directs you to a little temple, you pass through its beaded curtains and step inside.

You find yourself in a mostly empty room, at the end is a statue (more like a rock carving really) of your god Edis.
It's interesting how everyone makes sculptures of deities their own race. This odd little goblin version of Edis has the universal helmet and shield, but in Uthain he'd normally depicted with a sword in his left hand. Goblin Edis has a whip.
No wonder these goblins are much more civil than usual, clearly their shaman has been uplifting the tribe with some version of the teachings of Edis.

An elderly goblin shuffles into the room. Although it seems like he's an actual priest he's still dressed like some ooga booga pagan shaman with a mask.

Goblin Shaman: "Huh? You're the humans' leader yes? Can I help you?"

Too good of an opportunity for Christof growth to overlook.

>Ask about the Gloom Slope Lookout
We *know* he knows something about that place. It might just be a medusa that we can't handle, but there might something there to help us. Something there was turning undead into statues. If we can make that work for us, the way forward may be much easier.
