You are a devout follower of Ultresni, the One True Spirit and Goddess. Picked via the visions of a dream the true Goddess brought to you, you’ve taken to being a prophet of sorts, a preacher of her ways and a shepherd of her people. You’ve wandered the streets of your hometown of Ashton day by day, gathering supporting and speaking with the devout, slowly gaining notoriety (or fame, depending on who you ask) with some of the local factions.

Your supporters have recently grown to a problematic number, according to the local officials, and the word of Ultresni has spread through the township ‘like a weed’. This speedy evolution came to a crescendo when, upon the market square one morning, armed members of the militia escorted the magistrate himself to confront you. An ultimatum was given – take the word of Ultresni someplace else by dawn the following day, or be made to leave by force. While you and some of your flock tried to compromise with the lawman, little you had to say could sway the heathen.

Eventually you conceded, gathering the faithful to you and declaring that those willing would join you on a pilgrimage ‘to the promised land’ where you would create ‘a safe beacon of hope for the true believers’. A roar of support came from the crowd as you began to issue orders for the supplies you’d need on this journey.

----------

This is a civ-quest with light roleplaying and decision making, in which you will rule over and build a community of religious followers as they try to claim their slice of territory in a religiously and culturally diverse kingdom. The story will begin with your pilgrimage to a new home and then develop into a season-by-season evolution of your religious commune.

Very good. You are Jonas, known for your divine magic as blessed by Ultresni herself, never seen without the faithful sword-brother Gerard as your shadow.

You assemble your flock – a group of almost 80 people – and begin making preparations. You’ve a single day to leave Ashton and many preparations to make, so you’re quick to begin delegating work.

Ahead of you lies wilderness. Ashton is a pioneer town, grown over the last few decades on the rim of the know kingdom. To the far south and west are unknown lands, chartered only by explorers and adventurers in the past, barely mapped let alone settled or tamed. Taking the devout into these new territories will bring much danger, though no doubt much opportunity.

The combined wealth of the new settlers (jewels, coins, real estate in Ashton) allows you to get the bare basics needed for your trip, though there are some leftover funds you can utilise, equal to 50 Bartering Points.

You have 80 souls to care for and feed.

You are equipped with:

SUPPLIES
Food (5 weeks for 80 people)
Water (2 weeks for 80 people)
Warm Bedding (100 units)
Warm Clothes (100 units)
Feed for Animals (4 weeks for 40 animals)
6 Large Caravans (each for 6 people)
4 Large Wagons
Building Supplies (40)

ANIMALS
40 horses

TOOLS
30 Iron Swords
20 Iron Axes
20 Shortbows
10 Shields
10 Sets of Chainmail
20 Sets of Boiled Leather

In addition to the above, you have 50BP to spend in town before your departure – this wealth is transferable and can be saved for future bartering with other settlements or peoples. You can use these to work up a shopping list of the below. You can also Write In for prices on specific things you’d like to seek out, though know that Ashton is small and its economy is fair.

The order list with the majority votes/support will become canon.

>> 50 BP to spend

Rations for a week – 4BP
Water for a week – 2BP

Wine per cask – 3BP

I'm going to assume a central Europe like sort of setting and I'm going to assume we're going into heavily forested, essentially lawless border region. Water shouldn't be much of a concern, and chickens should be able to live off of the land/scraps. Protection is the obvious concern, but it looks like we start out with a lot of weaponry and armor, so we should be mostly good for now. When we get there, we're ought to build some defenses as soon as we can. Anyway, the list

>2 weeks of rations - 8 BP
42 BP left
>1 week of water - 2 BP
40 BP left
>1 barrel of ale
38 BP left
>1 cask of whisky - 5 BP
33 BP left
>1 cow - 5 BP
28 BP left
>25 chickens - 10 BP
18 BP left
>Animal feed for 5 animals for 2 weeks, - 4 BP
14 BP left
>1 Caravan Guard - 4 BP
10 BP left

The remaining 10 bp I say we should keep as reserve.

The journey begins the day after the confrontation with the Magistrate. As requested (demanded, even), Jonas and his faithful packed up their belongings, trading what little wealth they had for vital supplies, and departed the small fringe town.

The region is little-known to the preacher and his flock, though the group is very much aided by having an old grizzled ranger as guide – a caravan guard/mercenary who was willing to escort them at least some way into the wild, provided the pay was good. This man, who goes by Albrecht, is constantly scouting ahead of the convoy and making recommendations on direction, terrain and when to setup camp.

Evenings are dominated by making camp and keeping people fed. The seasons are still hopeful, though the weather does begin to turn chill the further you go.

The first week of the pilgrimage goes by successfully – while moving at a slow and steady pace, most days end with a hunt in the open fields and foraging beside the road. The bounty is small, but it does help minimise the impact on the pilgrims’ supplies.

On the third day the convoy comes across a young family of 4 – a father, mother and their two children, following the train out of Ashton. The group admit that they were originally adamant about the true faith, but after witnessing so many passionately devout neighbours pack up and leave, they knew where their fate lay. The pilgrims accept them with open arms.

By the end of the week, the dark green of a dense forest to the south and south-east can be seen from camp.

There will be, at the roll of a die. Moving a wagon train is difficult over hilly areas or through dense forest.
>>
>>3999827
Head south west to the hills. See if we can get a vantage point to scout for a good place to settle
>full March
>>
>>3999846
You can learn a bit through ‘staying put’ in which your people scout the area and explore. Otherwise you can just make assumptions - water is a source of food, as are woods, and woods will supply food. Open grassy terrain is best for cultivation. Etc.

What is our divine magic?
>>
>>3999853
You are a mortal vessel for Ultresni and always have been. While you’re still learning much about your divinity, you have been known to use life magic in the past (helping with growth, fertility and the healing of ailments) and can often ‘commune with the goddess’ through meditation and dreams.

I suggest we move south west to the open tile at half march. That space between the hills next to the forest looks promising

The convoy turns south-west, away from the woods and toward the open plains and the rolling hills. At this point the small pilgrimage is well removed from civilisation, losing all roads and signs of small farms and homesteads.

The days, again, are supplemented by some hunting and foraging, though without so much success as last week. The weather continues to grow colder and the troupe begins to circulate whispers, questioning just where Jonas is leading them.

At the end of the week the small convoy is nestled against the rocky foothills of an expanse of mounds to the west, the forest, while distant, still hugging their eastern flank.

The pilgrims head further west, into the hills south-west of Ashton, looking to scout the nearby lands. The going is tough across this difficult terrain and the wagons need to halt more than once as they get bogged down or simply can’t cross the rocky ground. Nights in camp are cold, being up higher than the plains and without much shelter, and game for hunting is very minimal.

While out foraging a small group of pilgrims come across a great place for a stone quarry, at least according to them. The earth just opens up in one of the small valleys between the hilly outcrops and there is stone worthy of building with, though it might take some excavation.

Scouts also wander the hills to the west and south looking for more landmarks and are able to map the river as it continues south, as well as more fertile plains the south and a lush looking thicket of forest to the west.

The third week ends with only 1 week of water rations.

where exactly on the map is this stone quarry?

Our more pressing matter right now is water i think, how much time would it take for us to look for water in the river if we are at two hex of distance?
>>
>>4001289

Sorry, I'll mark the map in future. The quarry is available to your SW, that kind of 'central' hill tile.

Full speed movement is 2 hexes, uninterupted and with good terrain rolls. You can also stay put and send small scouting parties to the river, or another water source, as they'll move much faster just on horseback rather than with a massive caravan train.

We need to get closer to the water as soon as possible, we can go with the river a little longer till the woods where we will be able to hunt, there we can go down a tile so we are closer to the stone quarry again.

Eager to replenish their stocks of water, though noting where the quarry site is, the pilgrims headed back north-west to locate the rushing river that Ashton sits on. This week was taxing – poor terrain, some devilish rain threatening the pilgrims by mid-week, and all the while ever-dropping temperatures as winter begins to roll in.

By the time the large group came to the river, moods were low. During evening meals there were often murmurs about the pilgrimage, questioning Jonas’ direction and the destination of their new home.

By the time the caravan had set up camp by the river, water stores were extinguished. Thankfully there are plenty of barrels and skins to be filled, though only primitive ways to filter the water. The river runs from the south, where mountains reach high to the sky, and it’s fair to assume the water is relatively fresh.

Spending a week here idle will help refill the water supplies and also further explore the area, though people are getting restless and are keen to settle somewhere, as winter arrives.

Yep, if you stick to the river you'll definitely have an easy time getting water.

I think our best chance is to move one tile closer to the woods while refilling water and then we should settle down, if winter is coming we will need a steady supply of food and wood which the forest may supply.
so, thats my vote.
Also, if necessary, we could give a speech to the people that we are close to our destination.

I think we should half march to the south west and settle there. It seems like a defensible spot with good access to water, timber, and stone. With winter about to hit and the water shortage, I think further delays might be really bad.

After six weeks on the road, Jonas and his pilgrims decide they have found a new home – Kutcher, meaning 'Ultresni's Respite' in the common tongue, is founded on the banks of the river.

Progress will now occur over periods of 1 month until the town is more established.

The small township of Kutcher is born and the pilgrims, still cold but with heightened spirits, set about making this place their home. Winter has arrived and the next few months are sure to be tough, however little is dampening their spirits.

Food stores are low, though the river looks to have plenty of fish and the people have spotted herds of deer scavenging for food in the plains the south.

Each turn you will be able to focus on constructing something (from buildings to tools to vehicles etc) and you will be able to do one other action (like explore, trade, develop your religion). Resource gathering happens passively with what’s on hand unless you want to use your ‘action’ point to focus on something specifically.

The pilgrims spend the coming month working this new land – gathering timber from the outskirts of the woods to the south and fishing the river with bows. Both feats have little success, but they do manage to keep food in their bellies and bring in some extra timber to help supplement the construction of homes.

A small cluster of timber huts have now been setup, housing a family each, and people are keeping warm (or at least dry) as the first snows fall over Kutcher. Many praise Ultresni for aiding in the setup of their new homes, though a small majority aren’t quite soaking up the frontier romanticism that was sold to them. Regardless, people are mostly happy with rooves over their heads.

To the south, a party of armed pilgrims spend much of the early winter exploring the small woods that border the river. They are delighted to discover CHESTNUT TREES on the border of thicket, accompanied by BERRY BUSHES, assuring another source of food come the warmer months.

The small party also discovers the small woods teeming with life – birds, rabbits and other small mammals.

Mid-winter is spent working on a lumber camp to the south, solidifying the resource supply for the foreseeable future and giving many hands a job to do, keeping minds off the cold. The first snows are followed by inches and inches of white, soon becoming another part of the day for the settlers. Most nights it’s difficult to keep warm, though there haven’t been any serious cases of illness just yet.

A well supplied scouting party also sets off for the hills to the south-east of Kutcher. If there’s stone, perhaps this rugged terrain has other bounties worth examining. Unfortunately, beyond finding rocky outcrops, windswept heights and a whole lot of snow, the scouts return empty handed.

Deer were hard to come by this month, as were the masses of fish in the river, and by the last month of winter, Kutcher is running on empty.

As winter comes to a bitter end the people of Kutcher focus on hunting, fishing and bringing in as much food as possible. These efforts are supplemented by the crafting of a few sturdy fishing traps which have been laid out in the river, hopefully bringing much more bountiful catches in future.

As Spring comes around, talk has turned to the long term longevity of Kutcher – farming is needed if the people are to survive cold winters in the future. Many of the pilgrims have the skills required for such an endeavour, but lack the tools and the implements – importantly, seeds!

Finally, while they commend his leadership in taking out the hunting groups, many are starting to mutter about Jonas’ ability to lead and his ongoing communion with Ultresni. It has been so long since he preached something new and insightful, people are started to question exactly what the faith means.

>>

I've left it open to your own moulding. Over time you will define the religion - there will be rituals, festivals or other celebrations, special rules to live by. All of these will be interpreted and then play into the story and narratives.

Anon had an idea earlier about a Day of Ultresni, for example.

I'm leaving it up to you to decide what Ultresni stands for, what kind of culture this is, how 'progressive' their religion is, all that. Right now it's basically just a generic 'Ultresni is great, she is the only true deity, she guides and cares for those who are faithful'.

When you do want guidance, Jonas can meditate and pray to commune with her - whether that's legit or not is up to you, but I'll present you with the subsequent symbols or dreams or visions either way.

The first month of Spring brings warmer weather, a thaw of the snow over Kutcher, and high hopes for the future as a small expedition is sent to Ashton to barter for seeds. The harvest is bountiful, with fish and deer and berries and even chestnuts from the forest to the south.

The pilgrims sent to Ashton return by the end of the month, having replaced some of their baskets of dry fish with a meagre supply of seeds – corn and beets. They report having received quite a bit of interest in Ashton, but also an equal amount of trepidation. The people there are not trusting of the pilgrims and their journey, but are interested to hear about it so they can gossip.

Jonas assures the people that he will commune with Ultresni once their roots are well laid, their food supply is secured, and the temple – which he helped build this month with his bare hands – is complete. The chatter by the fireside each night is now very much appeased, folk whispering with excitement about what Ultresni might ask of them next

The pilgrim’s only cow passed away this month, as did a number of chickens which were taken by wild dogs. Two horses also passed away. At the lumber camp an iron axe was broken.

Mid-spring is productive – a large tract of land is plotted out on the outskirts of the small village for crops to be sewn. While many are sceptical about how late in the season they are starting, a number of pilgrims have committee to working the earth and planting some of their newly acquired seeds.

Jonas also takes time this month to pray and, through his communion, introduce the people of Kutcher to the idea of Ultresni’s Sabbath – a day, once a week, for all to lay down their troubles and relax. Jonas leads these days personally, holding sermons at the local temple, and the town is quickly abuzz with this new tradition.
>>
One evening, after the first of these Sabbath’s, Gerard is spending time by the fireside with Jonas and a number of other faithfuls. He speaks rarely, but listens intently, as those present talk about their old lives and the world in general. Often Jonas reminds them all of their place in Ultresni’s larger plan, in her world, and slowly they begin to depart to their huts as the night draws cold and dark.

After some time only the two men remain – Jonas, looking far more grizzled from these months in the wild, and his faithful guardian Gerard. They sit quiet for some time before the leader of the small village probes at this companion, asking how the experience has treated him and what he thinks of the future.

“Honestly, my old friend. It’s hard to believe we are here, and with so much success so soon. I would have followed you anywhere, with any plan and any poor omens, but I had never expected we would have developed such a community in a short half-year. You truly are a servant of the divine, Jonas.”

The conversation turns to the people of the village, specifically some of the women, and soon Gerard is far more talkative and asking his devout leader about the rites of companionship and bonding under Ultresni’s protection.

Jonas smiles.

“Ultresni has a plan for all, Gerard, and gives us guidance on how best to form our families of the future…”

"Ultresni governs her people through monogamy, where one man and one women are bonded early as life partners and protectors, to usher in the next generation. Much like the old kingdom." Gerard seems happy with that answer - it's the norm for most of these people, after all - and the pair sit in silence for a while longer before the night's chill becomes too much and they retired.

As Spring comes to a close, Kutcher launches another trading expedition to the nearby town of Ashton – a dozen or more pilgrims depart, packed with bags and baskets full of fried fish and venison. They aren’t warmly welcomed at their new home, but do manage some meaningful trade. With them they bring back: wheat seeds, 10 shortbows, 5 iron axes.

Perhaps most valuable of all, the small expedition also brings back 7 new souls – a few young homeless boys and a young family, all interested to see what life is like in Kutcher and under the watchful guidance of Ultresni.

The rest of the village focusses on erecting a granary near the new field, which a few dedicated pilgrims spend the month sewing with corn. Hopes are high in the small village as Summer begins.

There is an interest in a potter’s workshop, a smith and better house, however all will require more extravagant resources.

The start of Summer is spent tireless marching between the quarry site and Kutcher, everyone lending a hand to move the entire store of timber across the hills. The new quarry is now operational, though, and some of the pilgrims have started using horses and carts to regular move supplies of stone back to town. People have instantly started thinking about the possibilities of stone homes by Winter.

Jonas also spreads more wisdom of Ultresni this past month, introducing the young of Kutcher to the idea of Sabbath schooling – where they learn not just of Ultresni and her ways, but also of how to work the field, hunt the deer and work with timber.

Two healthy chickens hatched last month and one horse passed away after suffering a wound during the trade expedition.

Let's hold the Midsummer Night's Feast, a celebration of good times and Ultresni's bounty of creation that is greatest during the summer times. Let's put some venison on the table and crack open that barrel of ale!

Also, we might want to next focus on infrastructure to let us extract more building materials at some point. We're using a good deal more than we can currently produce, even if that +10 doesn't include the quarry, I think.

As Summer peaks and the new quarry reaches full operation, the pilgrims begin a new grand venture – the construction of a defensive wall around Kutcher. Using timber logs, reinforced by stone and mostly held together with rope, the township begins constructing a crude palisade to surround their small home. By the month’s end, the palisade is about half complete – it borders the north and most of the eastern edges of the township. With another month of full work, provided the stone and timber continue to come in, the defences should be complete.

Jonas also sends another expedition off to the north, carefully crossing the river and exploring the lands beyond. To everyone’s surprise, the small group have two major findings – firstly, that the hills north of the river are rich with iron ore; and secondly, that the bustling fringe town of Medris rests just beyond them.

Jonas and the other pilgrims knew of this place, though weren’t expecting to find it so close. To their limited knowledge, Medris had been settled as a frontier mining town on the kingdom’s far western border and, although only settled a few decades ago, had quickly become a far more productive hub for industry than Ashton ever would be.

The pilgrims exploring took note of the town – of the military presence and the heavy focus on industry – before returning home, presumably unnoticed.

As the month came to a close, though, visitors also arrived in Kutcher. They did not appear to be the friendly type.

On a warm afternoon a dozen or so men atop horseback approached the township – while not soldiers, they were equipped with weapons, leather armour, and rode with an ease that comes with training. Jonas did not recognise any by face alone, but safely assumed that these folk were militiamen from Ashton.

“We come to this blasphemous place on behalf of Magistrate Griffiths, appointed nobility of Ashton. We carry a message for your leader.” The man who spoke was a grizzled son of a bitch, in his older years, but with a temper and a permanent scowl on his face that meant business.

Jonas presented himself…

>> With a sword by his hip and a handful of trustworthy ruffians ready to assist him at a moment’s notice.

>> With a con-artists hospitality, having several hidden archers setup on the outskirts of the meeting ready to drop the emissaries.

>> Peacefully (swords are for Gerard), and with soft tones to invite these visitors into his town and his home.

Can we not make Jonas a second Gerard? He isn't that kind of leader, it's not consistent with what we started.
>>
>>4006123
These fringe townships vary in size greatly. Ashton probably had somewhere between 500 and 1000 people when Jonas was growing up there. It's always been slowly growing, so likely has a militia force of several hundred at this point.

On top of it not being too in character, our defenses still aren't ready for a religious purge against us. While it won't hurt to keep at least Gerard at hand, we should try to handle this diplomatically. At worst they'll think us weak, which also plays to our advantage (assuming they aren't outright assassins, fo course).

"My good gentlemen, welcome to Kutcher. I understand the ride would have been long - can I offer you some tea and bread?" Jonas is instantly a quietly spoken host, approaching the guests as a crowd of pilgrims gather around to watch the interaction. A tension hangs in the air, not unknown to Jonas, as people watch-on with expectations that things will soon turn sour.

“We won’t share your table, nor your fucking dirt tea. I and my men rode all this way to deliver a message to the one who calls himself leader.” The man looks unimpressed, eyeing Jonas up and down and giving glares of sheer disgust at the pilgrims as they gather. Despite the hostility in his eyes, it’s clear he was doing more than just take in the sights – he was gathering intelligence, quickly making a count of heads and the lay of the land.

“That is I.” Jonas ignored the insult, gave a smile, held one arm as if to caution Gerard who was edging closer to his devout leader, one hand on the hilt of his sword. Again, the man on horseback looked unimpressed with this and rolled his eyes before digging into the breast of his leather vest, extracting a roughly folded parchment.

“Then this is for you, peasant. A message from the Magistrate to you and all who follow you. This place is your home, but it is not a lawful one. You’re to leave this land or pay coin to its rightful owner.” He directed his steed – a beast with just as much aggression as it’s rider, snorting and wide-eyed – toward Jonas until he could hand the parchment to the small town’s leader. It was indeed a short letter, with far more formality than its messenger had, but which shared the same message.

Leave or pay.

Jonas tucked the piece of parchment away, taking a deep breath…

>> “I thank you for delivering this important message. I bid you farewell, and safe journeys.”

>> “This land is Ultresni’s, and nobody else’s. I suggest you remind your Magistrate of that and have him deliver his own messages in future.”

>> “I appreciate the sentiment, sir, however I must decline. Our coins are our own, as is our land, and a man like Griffiths would never have the gall to take either from us. We are free people here.”

>> “You’re done here. Begone, while you have the chance. Tell your Magistrate your deed is done and that I spit at his words.”

“I thank you for delivering this important message and I bid you farewell, and safe journeys.” Jonas speaks softly, calmly, with a confidence the pilgrims had come to know well. The grizzled man stared down at Jonas for some time, considering whether the take offense by the words, but eventually turned his steed away, spitting down on the ground before the acolyte of Kutcher.

“You’ll have your time, preacher. The Magistrate’s orders are written, plain to see. If you don’t meet the laws of these lands, you’ll pay the price.” He speaks those final words a little louder, looking around the crowd which had gathered, and then finally gave his heels to the beast and lead the riders away from town.

There were some sighs of relief and low mumbles of dissent as the township watched the small band disappear into the distance.

The parchment indeed made it clear what was expected – 3 gold pieces (or their equivalent in non-perishable goods), per citizen, per year – to be paid to the Magistrate of Ashton before the first day of Winter each year.

>> Complete the palisade
I think we should complete what we have started for now. We can still build things other things in winter and food is not a problem since we have reserves.

What I don't know is when we should we paying to Ashton before they come and try to wipe us out? The year is coming to an end, maybe we can pay one time for the next year while we get stronger and even maybe try to stablish another settlement or make an alliance, who knows. If paying have to be this month, I still think we should pay, it isn't that costly to us and we gain time, something I consider more valuable now.
>>
>>4007429
this, but what exactly are we to trade off to get the 300g needed to pay, if its soon? The magistrate full well knows that we are religious pilgrims banished with a day of preparation at best. I feel like he's trying to fuck us over.
>>
>>4007379
I see that we have to pay in the first day of winter, so it will be next month. If we pay training shouldn be a priority right now, we can send more scouts following the river to the SW as it seems to go. We arent in dire need to trade and winter will require of all our sources. It doesnt seem like the moment to hold a festival and developing our faith is pretty secondary right now since we already have developed something.
>>
>>4007437
We have Bartering points (wealth) so I suppose we don't need to trade specific things, we give part of that wealth. 3 gold doesn't ammount to a single point so for now is a pretty low price.
>>
>>4007442
Next month is going to be early autumn, not winter, we still have 3 more turns until that
>>
>>4007449
Oh I am stupid. I thought winter follows summer. Yes we have more turns. I still think we should pay in winter so we buy us another year.
>>
>>4007447
You will owe 276 gold pieces should you pay, and should you have no changes to population.

Your bartering points (old jewlery and other valuables) will get you to 100.

Looking back at >>3998841 might help you assume some values of things, but prices are always circumstantial. The Magistrate is demaning no-perishable things if you don't have the currency.
>>
>>4007454
Oh. Well we have to scape for our lives or prepare for battle in a few turns. Right now I should go to sleep because I'm not thinking clearly.
>>
>>4007447
>3 gold
Bro, that's 3 gold per person per year. 92 pilgrims, so 276 gold. In BP, that's 28 rounding up. There's no fucking way we can pay this without really drastic measures like liquidating our assets, visiting loans sharks, or land sales. At least in my view. Anyone we sell to will also know we're under this kind of situation and will thus screw us on prices since they'll know we're desperate. There is literally no reason for them to give us fair prices on anything if they have any business sense. I think our only hope is to either move somewhere else or build up some serious defenses. I'm thinking the second one is more realistic. We can seek allies/mercenaries from Medris, perhaps agreeing to be their vassals in exchange for foodstuffs from us at generous rates. It would still be a shit deal, but the demands we're given from the Magistrate seem blatantly impossible and a pretense for our destruction.
>>
>>4007379
>Complete Palisade
>Send a delegation to Medris requesting aid and offering a dealing involving lumber and stone resources in return for support against Ashton, diplomatic, military or otherwise(more armour would be nice). Perhaps additionally preach amongst the locals in order to potentially bring new pilgrims to Kutcher, better life, new opportunities all that jazz.

Don't know if we'll be able to pay them in time, and their tax seems to be rather punitive in nature. Reckon we send a delegation to Medris, hope that they value our lumber and stone resources or just plain hate Ashton enough to help.

We could then basically train all of the menfolk of the town in combat for the entirety of of autumn, giving them more training that most peasants in these times; ideally training for the whole three months and more into winter if we get the chance. Resulting in a force of

>10 Swordsmen with Chain mail and shields.
>20 Swordsmen with boiled leather armour

After the confrontation the month prior, Jonas spent no time pondering the next steps – it was clear what needed to be done. Kutcher was not going to heel to the local Magistrate, regardless of the legitimacy of his title, and to avoid carnage they would need far better defences. The coming month, as Summer came to a close, was spent finishing the crude palisade that surrounds the Kutcher township.

Jonas also deployed a diplomatic expedition to Medris – not to trade directly, but to found an agreement between the two settlements.

On their return the diplomats brought two things – word of Medris, and new faithfuls. On the streets of the industrious town they found many who were downtrodden and looking for a light in their life. It was easy to summon the true faith in their eyes and convince them to return to Kutcher.

Of the town, the diplomats spoke harshly – Medris is an industry town, focussed on heavy repression and production. While they are yet to begin mining the known iron ore, they’re currently focussed on heavy production of timber and stone in the north. There is a significant military presence here overseeing hard labour and a lot of agriculture. The focus of the local government seems to be putting the finishing touches to a large dock on the northern river, presumably to import and export human labour and resources.

The local ruler, Magistrate Asmant, would not accept an audience with the diplomats. Instead they were referred to a lowly office-holder who spent his days counting coins and keeping records. The bureaucrat was very disinterested in Kutcher’s proposal, though did find it of interest that the small pilgrim settlement existed. At the mention of Ashton the diplomats learned that those of Medris think very little of their neighbour, though beyond that there was little to gain from the exchange.

One of the men on the expedition feels adamant that, should we just try again, perhaps offering them a gift, they might be able to be swayed. Most of his comrades, alas, feel that Medris is more like another threat than it is a potential ally.

In town, with the promise of a harvest on the horizon (even a small one) and the new arrival of new faithfuls, moods are relatively high, all things considered. The faith in Ultesni to guide and protect is as strong as ever.

Sixteen new converts came back with the traders who journeyed to Medris. Four chickens hatched and a pony was born.

Medris is not going to be another friend it seems.

How does a town get a magistrate? Do we know much more about the politics of the region?
>>
>>4007548

Jonas was mostly a peasant before all of this, so never knew too much of that world.

You esentially know that this is the border (frontier-eqse) of a kingdom.

Most small towns (the bottom) have a magistrate, and you know that there are Barons and Baronesses above them. Beyond that there are numerous other levels of hierarchy, then the King.

At the top rungs, bloodlines and gold determine what kind of rank you might be able to get yourself. Lower down, as is the case with Magistrates, governing roles are given as rewards, or sometimes as part of deals, with those up the chain. It was common knoweldge that Griffiths, for example, had an uncle who married into the local Baron's family line at some stage.

Most parts of the kingdom, especially those closer to the border, are almost governed independently as town/city-states, provided they take general direction from up high and they pay their taxes.

Focus on making traps and cheap counters to the advantages the Magistrate's men will have. For instance, they will likely try to use heavy cavalry to outmaneuver and overwhelm us, so we should construct Frisian Cavalry to partially negate that. Things like that.
>Send scouts to explore the nearby lands, particularly areas the Magistrate's men and supply train will likely use to get to us. Areas that we could trap or harass them from safely when they come

we kinda went along with them, so they might not expect too much resitance.
if we kill them all, we can take their equpiment and gift some of it Medris and try to seal an alliance of sorts
>>
Guerrilla warfare won't work in these conditions, we have one base and they already know where it is. For guerrilla warfare to be effective you need a large space to range through and a local populace supportive of your goals. We have a single base that we cannot afford to lose.

Plus we already know the terrain surrounding Kutcher, plains and hills are was lie on the march from Ashton, not exactly the best terrain.
>>
>>4007563
I was thinking we could diminish their forces through less direct means like using traps and hit and run attacks while they march here. I guess you're right that we don't have enough time for it to do enough damage (one or two weeks). I'm not sure we can beat them in a single, direct battle for the settlement if they arrive with their full strength, though. In addition to training troops and building a moat, what else do you suggest for the future?
>>
>>4007570
The reality is the people are peasants unskilled in war. We can't expect them to effectively practice guerrilla tactics with no training or understanding. In addition, if we lose too many people to war this early we stand no chance at prospering.

It might even be best to not even fight, Ashton is losing out to Medris because it has no natural resources of its own in cultivation, perhaps we could negotiate with the magistrate to pay our tribute in stone and timber as a replacement for gold, at least partially,.
>>
>>4007576
Alright, I'll support your proposal for this turn.

On the second part, I'm running off of the assumption that there is no real negotiation with the Magistrate. He sent an obviously antagonistic "son of a bitch" who's first sentence included calling us a bunch of blasphemers. He might as well have said that the Magistrates wants nothing more than our heads on pikes. To me, this isn't intimidation, but reflects a genuine desire to wipe us out. I say this since he came with an offer that appears impossible to fulfill without essentially destroying us in the process. There is no reason they would actually give us fair prices for anything, since we are in such a desperate situation, and I think the only meaningful way to get our hands on the BP needed would be to practically liquidate everything we have. Even if we go through with it, we have no reason to believe they will actually uphold their side of the bargain. Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems our only options are to lay down and die or to stand and fight.
>>
>>4007585
I get you man, I don't think a long-term positive relationship with Ashton will be beneficial. Though I believe we could exploit their rivalry with Medris, to ensure our survival in the short term. Highlight our town's utility in taking back Ashton's rightful place as chief town of this region, not Medris. Send stone and wood to them as tribute but once we are strong enough, cut off supplies and start pushing them both around.

So maybe this instead?
>>4007481
>Build Moat and drawbridge
>Send delegation to Ashton offering to pay tribute on the form of resources instead of gold.

Then train soldiers if they absolutely tell us to get stuffed.
>>
>>4007594
I think we've been told to get stuffed already. If we have an inexperienced peasant force, we can't afford to waste training time in a Hail Mary diplomacy attempt. At least in my view. I'll stick with your original proposal.
>>
>>4007552
Surely we’d know the name of our local Baron and what their city is. Maybe we should send a delegation there...

>>
How was the political situation in Ashton proper when we left? Is the Magistrate's power uncontested, or are there other key figures (aside from the baron) that contest him within the town? If the latter is so:

>Build a moat
>Send delegation to Ashton to see if we can garner support from the magistrate's political opponents.
I think we'll have to bite the bullet concerning this year's payment; I just don't think we're ready enough to properly oppose them yet, infrastructure or soldier-wise. Three months of training 50-ish men, especially when our opponents know full well that's all we can muster, isn't going to hold back a proper cavalry force of any sort, traps or no.

I think the best thing we can do in the short-term is exploit any political cracks in our enemy, to at least try and deterr an attack in the first place and gain some sort of outside support in this unfriendly land. Worst comes to worst, we buy ourselves a year, long enough to improve our infrastructure and gain better countermeasures to the inevitable heretic purge.

We won't neglect setting up a decent militia in the coming months, but we really need to see if there's any deciding factor that can allow us to win in the long term first.

>>4007563
>>4007576

Definitely agree here. Our military force is a handful of hunters and our bodyguard, without a single proper rider or trained men aside from Gerard. Not to mention we've already crudely dug ourselves in position.

It's going to be hopeless if we get in an outright fight with no hope of outside relief; barring any outside interference, Ashton can outman, outmaneuver and outlast us by a significant degree.
>>
>>4007649
I mostly agree, we have to think in the long term, that's why there is no much of a point to a moat now, we still have three months til they try to collect the money, and three more months after that because they can't attack in winter, there is no way militiamen can march all those weeks in winter to attack us.
We should improve our infrastructure by making tools or a watermill.
I agree with the rest, send a delegation to Ashton.
>>
>>4007693
Won't be able to dig the moat effectively in the frozen ground. Also not sure if the river freezes during winter?
>>
>>4007702
The river doesnt freeze during winter, we already survived a winter in this location
>>
>>4007649
this, he said we can reach 100bp by liquidating, so we can probably earn 30 bp by just selling nonessentials like jewelry, even though it'll likely not be all too popular.
>>

Also ComflordQM What was our tax rate back in the day, back in Ashton? Is this threatened tax rate much higher than our old one?
>>
>>4007693
Good point. I'll switch to
>Build a watermill
>Send delegation to Ashton to see if we can garner support from the magistrate's political opponents.
For the sake of improving productivity. ComfyQM, if there's a need to break ties, I'm also fine with the moat.
>>
>>4007693
ill switch or vote for this

After all I have read I really think we have to just leave behind this settlement. Or somehow do another settlement far from the two cities while mantaining this one so if somthing really bad happens here we already have a secured place somwhere else (we can bait them to think this settlement is still inhabitated maybe). It was an error to go see Medris, they will just try to exploit us sooner or later, now they know we exist. I think seding scouts to the SW, going along the river or trying to se whats behind that forest to the W is most beneficial.

Trying to boicot Ashton power by trying to buy the oppositioners of the offcial power could backfire. We arent an interesting force to anyone nor we know how what extravagnt/very particular interest of them we miracously happen to fullfil that it's not just simple economical power, wehich we don't have. We are like livestock really.

Also the migration can be justified by faith. Some moses-like exodus.
>>
>>4007925
I was also considering leaving but this time it might be an even longer journey and without a guide at that. Sure we have time to prepare before they come back but winter isn't too far away. If we're going to abandon Kutcher I think we should until Spring and send out plenty of scouts beforehand
>>
>>4007946
Agreed. Winter is something to consider. The situation is that we are going to face hard difficulties maybe soften up a bit by luck, or good planification. I prefer to go through harsh climate conditions than having to face human forces. Winter is a disadvantge but isn't direclty against us.
>>
>>4007946
I mean, it could be a progreesive migration. We dedicate every month to translocate suplies, tools, children and a few adults. I don't know when the consequences well come if don't pay, maybe spring is too late. I'm a bit stupid to calculate time though as I already mistake winter with summer or something like that but I invite we consider this option a bit more.

Question Time

>>4007613
>Surely we’d know the name of our local Baron and what their city is.
Jonas and many of the Pilgrims know of Baroness Reyne who rules over this part of the frontier from the down-stream river city of Jes’urq. None have ever been there, only knowing that it’s East.

>Did our diplomats see any mercenaries / adventures in Medris?
There were a lot of ruffians in Medris, but none who looked to be actively sellswords. The town was heavily militarised so it’s very possible some of the garrison are paid help – impossible to know without more in depth investigations.

>>4007621
>Btw, have any children been born yet?
Very likely – I’m going to manage births as a static each year, for the sake of avoiding too much nuance in the numbers. So Births for the first year will be coming at the end of Harvest.

>>4007649
>How was the political situation in Ashton proper when we left? Is the Magistrate's power uncontested, or are there other key figures (aside from the baron) that contest him within the town?
Again, Jonas and many of the pilgrims were salt-of-the-earth peasantry who didn’t know much about the complexities of the town and its politics. It was no secret that Magistrate Griffiths was unpopular to many, but from what you could tell there were no higher-class families or individuals who were opposing him publicly. Just the usual dissent from the working folk at the tavern after a long day in the fields.

>>4007816
>What was our tax rate back in the day, back in Ashton? Is this threatened tax rate much higher than our old one?
Yes, this tax rate is higher in the sense that it’s a blanket rule for everyone. Back in Ashton people were tax significantly less, as it was a percentile of their (usually) low incomes. Tax usually equated to a maximum of 1 gold piece a year, per person, and slid all the way down to 10-15 silvers (100 silver to a gold)
>>
>>4008092
When they will come to reclaim their pay if we don't pay by the time they requested? Whether we leave or resist, we will need to know if we can plan something waiting for a more amiable season.
>>
>>4007693
>>4007854
>>4007918

The early days of Harvest observe the construction of a new project – a simple watermill on the river. On completion, the people are able to harness the natural power of the river for milling, smithing and even rolling for metalwork. Once the resources are obtained, the mill will shoot Kutcher forward technologically.

The start of the harvest is productive, bringing in baskets and baskets of corn and wheat.

Jonas also launched another diplomatic mission, this time to Ashton and this time filled with a little more subterfuge than last. The most charming and street savvy pilgrims made the trip, hoping to infiltrate the small town’s underbelly and identify anyone who might be a political opponent to the current magistrate.

By month’s end, the small expedition had not returned…

The deadline was 'by the last day of Winter', so you expect they might come asking for it in the next two Turns. It's unclear.

>>4007693 suggests even if they do come sooner, they won't attack in any full force until after Winter, so that's another 5 turns away.
>>
>>4008110
we should build a small port or rather, rafts, so we can travel to ashton and perhaps even jesurq more efficiently. Hauling quarrygoods from one place to another is no fucking joke on land.
Also send a trade delegation to ashton to sell just enough luxury goods and overabundant supplies to pay this years taxes, aswell as check in on our other delegation.
>>
>>4008109
>Our "diplomats" have so far managed in giving away our existence to an aggressive military city-state and killed/turned into hostages by our opponents.
I take back what I said earlier, clearly we should drop any diplomatic pretenses and stick to construction, since we're clearly terrible at the former.
>>
>>4008109
Those eight pilgrims are dead. I thought the point to expedition was to identify whether or not the magistrate was being actively malicious, not ensure his rage.

>>4008110

>>Figure out his intentions
I don't think there's ever been any doubts as to the fact he hated our guts.
>>
>>4008127
Yes but what kind of hatred? Blind religious hatred where we had no choice but to fight, "or you got out from my authority hatred" that could be mollified, giving us more time to prepare.
>>
>>4008109
I dont know about building but we should
>> Send scouts to explore the lands SW. Or any other direction if someone else has other ideas (except near the two cities we already know). We need to know our territory. Even try to pin point where exactly the frontier with this other kingdom is.
>>
>>4008109
Build
>an iron mine
We need iron for weapons tools and better defenses
>train soldiers

Its do or die now boys there commin for us.

How much would the following be worth in terms of the magistrate’s tax?
>Ale (1 barrel)
>Whisky (1 cask)
>6 Large Caravans (6 people ea)
>Wealth (10 Bartering Points)

These, plus animals, resources and food are basically the only tings we can trade - as it looks like we’ll just have to accept the tax this year.

>>4008119
Backing these actions
>Build Ships to help explore either up or down stream
>Train Soldiers (archers)
>>
>>4008152
No point in building anything around here, what's left behind will be used by Medris and Ashton, Once winter breaks we should flee upriver, away from the magistrates clutches. Fighting now would be death.
>>
>>4008161
Good point lets just pack up and leave before winter. In fall like last time
>>
>>4008119
Changing my original vote slightly
>Build Ships to sail further upstream and away from Ashton
>Send scouts to follow the river upstream, to identify a suitable landing point.
>>
Okay let's put this shit concretely, a weeks rations for about 100 people is 4bp, so 1 turns worth of food is worth 16bp. Just 2-3 turns of food surplus is all we should need to pay the magistrate off each year.
>>
>>4008109
Changing vote from
>>4008152
To
>>4008174
>>
I think we should first agree as to whether we're planning on making like Moses and bailing by river, or if we intend to commit to saving Kutcher for another year. It seems like we have two very different opinions here, and I think we should sort out our long-term goal first before we decide exactly what to build.
>>
>>4008188
we certainly shouldn't flee in fucking winter of all times, I really doubt the magistrate's going to collect our tax and then just fucking kill us, if he could just, you know, collect the tax every year?
>>
>>4008176
I think he said non perishable trade goods.

I think >>4008155 has the right idea
>>
>>4008188
Boats are a simply the back-up plan, my intent with my vote was to built boats capable of heading upstream, not just rafts or anything.

We can use them to flee quickly if our delegation has truly been caught and our evil intentions made known, simply paying our taxes will not get us out of that bind. In any case they will be useful for waterborne transport of goods.

>>4008193
Course, we'd flee in Spring.
>>
>>4008155
I'll support this for now, since it's gonna be useful regardless whether we intend to stay or leave.
>>
>>4008197
We could sell the food to ashton and then pay with the BP/Gold.
>>
>>4008202
If he's caught our delegation we won't be able to sell things in Ashton, he'll be out to punish us. He won't just come for the tax.
>>
>>4008202
We already disscused this, we are in no position to try trade with Ashton, they will probably ruin us with high prices. Even if some peasents like us, they wont be giving us gold, just resources. Paying is not an option.

>>4008199
I'm backing this.
>>
>>4008213
Make up your mind: one minute you're saying we're just hedging our bets, the next you're saying we're gonna get punished hard and should get ready to escape ASAP. Tribute anyway or run, which one is it?
>>
>>4008213
Who says he did? Maybe they were waylaid, maybe they were had whilst in the seedy underbelly of the town, maybe they're doing something in ashton.
>>4008219
Ah yes, because the disliked magistrate possibly hates us, the entire market of ashton is now against us. He could have told the market we're blacklisted, but there's no way of knowing without any sort of intel. You're just wildly speculating and panicking.
>>
>>4008199
Will we need an especial infraestructure first in order to build those kind of ships? Or can we make reliable ones directly in our present conditions?
>>
>>4008225
Seriously? I was trying to explain that boats would be useful whatever happened.

>>4008228
Better to prepare for the worst, rather than potentially send more pilgrims into Ashton as hostages. If they do come back we can change our plans for the next month and have some shiny new boats and more of upriver mapped out.

>>4008229
Maybe docks? Tbh I'm not sure. In that case we'd ideally go docks then boats.
>>
>>4008229
Making anything beyond basic rafts is pretty complex work. Do we even have the tools for that kind of work?
>>
>>4008228
We didn't send intel, we send those people from we haven't heard anything for now. Maybe they are saving us from paying such high taxes or whatever. I don't think sending intel know will help. If you are talkning about what we haven't done, well, that's the past. There's not use in looking at what hasnt been done.
>>
>>4008242
We will have to wait for OP to see what we are capable in our present state. Probably will have to dedicate a month to docks as have been said.
>>
>>4008248

>Build Ships to sail further upstream
>Send scouts to follow the river to identify a suitable landing point.

In preparation for the coming Winter, and the Magistrate of Ashton’s deadline, the small township begins preparing for escape – if we can’t fight them, we’ll evade them. People begin working long shifts to construct a small jetty on the river, large enough to dock a few small boats, and then get to work on some primitive vessels. Alas, without the proper tools (and knowledge) the pilgrims’ workmanship is limited to simple rafts and ‘floating boxes’. With some crude oars, it’s still unclear just how far these ramshackle vehicles might take their rowers.

Meanwhile, a small expedition of scouts is deployed on horseback, venturing south – they follow the river, plotting out its banks, searching so an adequate place to call home should thye be forced away from Ashton. On their return they report back thick forests and the foothills of dividing mountains with rise up high in the north, snow capped.

Finally, on a cool afternoon, as Jonas is watching over the last of the pilgrims finish their work in the fields, and small group of figures approach from the east. Before long it’s clear that the Ashton ‘diplomats’ have returned, though they are one too many – a ninth person wanders with them.

Jonas comes to meet the returning pilgrims at the gate, Gerard by his side and several others of the township watching on. The diplomatic group look tired, though in high spirits, and bring with them a ragged looking woman in leather armour and with a longbow over one shoulder. Her bright eyes look nervous, dripping with trepidation as she assesses the small town, and the leader of the small troupe nudges her toward Jonas.

“Jonas, holy father, this woman comes with good news. An offer of help. Her name is Carmen.” The man nods reassuringly and the woman steps forward, still carefully assessing those she has been brought too, but offers a nonetheless genuine smile.

“My people have ranged across the lands south of Ashton for many years, before the town became what it is. We’ve watched it grow, become bloated with civilisation from the east, and we’ve had our fair share of troubles with those folk.”

Jonas recalls hearing of these ‘wild folk’ who live in the forests and the hills – they were bedtime stories for children, gossip at the local tavern, the only people the peasantry was comfortable to look down on.

“Indeed, I remember your people…”

>> …long downtrodden by the Magistrate and his court of fools, much like us. You are welcome here.

>> …wild folk, maybe, but genuine and peaceful. I remember hearing stories of your type, living of the land, thinking fondly of how charming the simple life sounded.

“Indeed, I remember your people – long downtrodden by the magistrate and his court of fools, much like us. You are welcome here.” Jonas gave her an equally genuine smile, gesturing to the humble township around them, and a tangible amount of intrigue began to bubble away within the onlooking crowd.

Jonas then invited the woman to his home, accompanied by Gerard (of course) and Hans, the leader of the diplomatic envoy. Hans had been close to Jonas since the pilgrimage first began, having once been a coin counter and bookkeeper for one of the stables in Ashton. Now, as the town grew and more talk had begun about the neighbouring powers (and the dreaded Ashton tax), Hans had become one of the primary diplomatic figures to counsel Jonas and the others on relations and trade.

The trio sat, drinking cool water, and Jonas served up some fresh eggs and dried venison for an evening meal. The chatter stayed small, of the journey and the weather and the lands around Ashton, though soon a silent pause brought the conversation to business.

“Carmen and her people, they’ve been beaten down and hunted by the milita for long than Kutcher has stood. They’re hardy, strong folk – they hold onto what’s theirs and they give Griffiths and his lot plenty to worry about.” Hans is enthusiastic, like he’s giving a sales pitch.

“And they’re willing to help us, Jonas.”

The wild looking woman nodded, not as enthusiastic about selling herself as Hans was, but she agreed with him nonetheless.

“My folk want after very little, sir. We only take what we need, we only settle when we need to, we always give back as much as we can. We are not looking to conquer or colonise or steal. We simply want to live.” She frowns at the simplicity of it all. “And that simply doesn’t seem to be an ideal the Griffiths man will coexist with.”

>> And what would you have us do? My man here says you have an offer of help. What would you propose between our people?

>> We see eye to eye, then, with a common enemy sitting so close and harassing at every moment. Natural allies, if you ask me.

>> Indeed, not a popular man, but a commonplace one, unfortunately. Griffiths is only one of many, and one day he’ll be replaced by another. The reign never ends, but it can be escaped.

Jonas was not so quick to buy into the enthusiasm of his followers, ever suspicious of those who came from outside his flock. “And what would you have us do? My man here says you have an offer of help. What would you propose between our people?”

The woman took some time to consider the question.

“The days of my people, at least on these lands, are numbered. As are those of your faithful, from what your man has told me.” Hans raised an eyebrow, watching Jonas intently, trying to ascertain whether he had overshared or not. Carmen continued.

“While we are under the thumb of a small tyrant, one spouting the word of royalty, we will only be left alone to survive for so long. That is why my people have fought, when we’ve had to. It is why we have let these trying times mould us into the resilient warriors that we are. And so, too, will these times put such a pressure on you and yours.”

The woman went on to propose a pact, one of blood and underhanded actions. Her people lived on the land, nomadic as much as they could be, and had recently begun picking fights with the local militia of Ashton when their presence overreached. Through these trials, and at great cost, her small clan had learned much of the tactics and abilities of those who enforce the Magistrate’s Law.

“From what we’ve been told, your folk are next on the chopping block. My people have resisted, have become ingrained in the land as we constantly moved, only just keeping the target off our backs. But you, this place you’ve built, it is an easy target. One not so hastily disbanded. The warriors of Ashton will come here, surely enough, and you cannot prevent them. Not alone.”

Carmen is looking for an ally in warfare, someone to take the fight back to the Magistrate. She and her people are under no allusions that they can defeat or destroy the enemy entirely – rather, they aim to smack him hard, square in the chin, to give him pause before thinking about bullying them further. Her proposal is one of offense, one that takes begins the battle before Kutcher, when the so-called debt collectors come, and then takes the fight to the lands around Ashton themselves. An offensive of unrelenting harassment.

>> My people are farmers and holy folk, they are no warriors. How do you expect us to transform into guerrillas to fight against a trained militia?

>> Your plans are folly! The power of Ashton, even if it was overcome… which it couldn’t possibly be, not by us… is supported by the king himself. There is no end to that power.

>> You ask us to pick up weapons and fight with you… for you, perhaps… to what end? Do you offer bloodshed solely for our own preservation here, or do you have some other motive?

>> And when the Magistrate’s cause is defeated, and we have survived, what then? What is it that you seek from this infantile union?

“My people are farmers and holy folk, they are no warriors. How do you expect us to transform into guerrillas to fight against a trained militia?” A tone of annoyance, or perhaps defeat, had come to Jonas’ words. His guest did not seem phased.

“There will be much to learn, and much for mine to teach, but it does not take a miracle to harness the skills needed to sting the lion. That’s all it will take – a sting.” Carmen went on to detail how her people could help train a force of pilgrims, giving them the tools and the skills to fight. Her plans seemed to revolve around using Kutcher as the bait that brings forth the first instalment of Ashton’s militia – unprepared, cocky, unexpecting of ambush.

After that first punch was thrown, her people… and a small contingent of those from Kutcher, equipped and armed with the wild-folks’ tactics… would begin ravaging the lands around Ashton, provoking further incursions into their well laid traps.

“It will be all about our offensive, about how hard we can hit and how quickly we can dissipate afterwards. We may not defeat Griffiths and his people, but we can make stamping us our too difficult to maintain.” There is a bloody flash of excitement in her eyes as she speaks.

>> You propose war to people, my people, who are of peace. It is not any easy thing for me to commit to. We will come to you again, with an answer, by Winter’s end.

>> You speak foolishness. There is no way my people could become equipped for such brutality in such short a time. No, our path is with diplomacy… we will surely find peaceful ground with Ashton.

>> I cannot commit my people, as they have trusted me to protect them and I fear doing this thing will no. But I, personally, will agree to your offer. Those willing will begin training at once.

>> My flock will be at your disposal if it should mean the downfall of our enemy… or, at least, force him to rethink before coming after us again. Tell me how we shall begin.

Or literal catholic church for that matter. We aren't doing a Holy Crusade, it's just a skirmish although important for us.

The evening grew old before the meeting was over, but soon enough Carmen was taking her leave from Kutcher – Jonas and his men had offered her lodgings, but the ranger was adamant that she should begin her journey that night.

An agreement had been struck and, in the late hours of the evening, it was up to Jonas to bring the news to his people. He had been reasonable, not yet committing any of them to the cause, but he hoped some would see the true way and support him. He could count on Gerard, probably even Hans and some of his other advisors, but it was still unclear just how many of the pilgrims were ready to set aside their lives to learn the art of warfare.

It was close to the middle of the night when Jonas gathered his people around the center of their small village where the embers of a large fire glowed, slowly dying. The evening was brisk as the winds of winter approach, rolling in from the West, and most of the folk looked tired and ready to retire for the evening, despite their trepidation to find out what had transpired.

“Faithfuls, friends, neighbours. An opportunity has come to us in these trying times and, as the leader you put your faith in almost a year ago, I have made a decision to pursue this opportunity.”

The crowd leaned forward, listening to Jonas’ words as he explained all that had come to pass – the intricacies of the tax, the intimidation by Ashton’s militia, the offer of mutual help from the wild folk. All of it. By the end of his tale, many were whispering to one another, a tense nervousness echoing throughout the crowd.

>> So I ask you, in faith to the true spirit of Ultresni, to stand strong with me as we confront the unjust and those who would take away our freedoms. By any means!

>> I ask of you this night, rather than demand of you, that you make a decision guided by your heart alone. Do what is right, for you and your families.

>> The choice to join me in this task, with our new friends and their training, is one that each of you must make yourself. None should feel pressures or obligations as this path, bloody as it is, is not the only option for Kutcher.

>> With the help of our new allies we will bring a mighty curse on those who oppress! The blood of the unjust with stain this land that is ours, and we will know true freedom… for Ultresni!

If we are asking people to fight and die for this community, there cannot be ambiguity - but we also cannot speak like a bloodthirsty tyrant.

Rousing, patriotic and devout.

I'm with you. We are still leaving the choice to fight ultimately to each citizen, as we said we would, but we can't be promising other vague alternatives at this point. I also don't really like pushing the responsibility of going to fight and perhaps die entirely on them and their families, while doubtlessly very patriotic. We're still their spiritual leader, and should bear the burden as well.

Hopefully the people have seen by how we personally handled previous negotiations that we aren't making this choice lightly.

“So I ask you, in faith to the true spirit of Ultresni, to stand strong with me as we confront the unjust and those who would take away our freedoms. By any means!”

By the following morning, as the days took a cool turn toward the impending Winter, Jonas was confronted by 38 individuals as he broke his fast – men, women, even young folk of fourteen or fifteen years, all eager to serve Ultresni and do whatever was required to defend this new home of theirs. A solid third of the population of Kutcher, inspired by his words (or perhaps terrified by the alternative of laying down), would stand behind Jonas in the conflict to come.

As the final decision for this chapter, before I let this thread die off and prepare for what is to come, what will these faithfuls be called? These, who serve Ultresni, and are prepared to draw blood for her (and to die for her) for the sake of Kutcher.

I will be letting this thread close off once this decision is made and will pick up Chapter 2 next week sometime – thanks to all who played, I hope you enjoyed!
