You are Raishō Naori, a chūnin from the hidden village of Amegakure, and that is where you’ve returned to after a series of long and completely unforeseen missions outside the village. You’ve now met, or at least seen in passing, all three of the legendary Sannin in the process.

But now you’re home, sheltering against the rain by a warm hearth in a small tea room.

There have been a few low-rank missions of course, nothing really worth making note of. Guard patrols have been mixed in with the old familiar calling of tending to the smallest, highest shrines in Amegakure which are only accessible by those who can literally walk on walls.

But it’s only a few weeks before you find yourself called in to meet with your sensei.

“Tenshi-sensei,” you greet her politely. “A pleasure to see you again.”

And it really is just her… you’ve been called into a private tea room that used to be one of Hanzō’s smaller meeting places. Gone are all of the guards who would have been there in his day of course. Just you, Tenshi-sensei, and the tatami mats.

“And you,” Tenshi-sensei replies calmly. “It is good to see that your growth has continued to far exceed my high expectations. How has your private training been since last we spoke?”

“The Kongō Fūsa is within my grasp,” you admit, albeit with a sigh of dissatisfaction. “A very powerful technique… but one which presumes that its target has no backup. In that scenario using the technique would be tantamount to suicide.”

“You have a plan to remedy this,” Tenshi-sensei muses curiously.

“That wasn’t phrased as a question,” you observe. “And you’re right… both that and the Rasengan can be used by releasing a seal marked onto a paper anken. But for that to happen I need to devise the right formula key. It’s an added degree of difficulty, particularly with the Kongō Fūsa which would essentially become a sealing formula within a sealing formula.”

“I’ve never done anything like that.”

“Few people have,” Tenshi-sensei observes. “Your training with the Shrike clan is also progressing, I trust?”

“The cooperation ninjutsu that Nyoka clearly has in mind requires me to face my weakness with nature releases,” you admit with a deep frown. “Embarrassing though it may be to admit it, I’m having some trouble.”

“Water and Lightning are the two releases she uses?”

You nod with a small grin. “Thankfully those are the two I stand a chance at using. Awesome, right?”

“The results will likely be spectacular,” Tenshi-sensei agrees, her tone betraying an unusual note of disapproval.

“Is something wrong?”

Tenshi-sensei shakes her head. “Not yet.”

“A future problem?” you press.

This time she nods. “You could say that. Lord Pain has taken a personal interest in your potential: my concern is in ensuring that you are not placed into situations before your abilities have sufficiently matured to face them.”

That… honestly catches you a little off your guard. “You’re worried?”

Tenshi-sensei seems to catch herself as she speaks. “Lord Pain… does not always consider things from a human perspective. You are of course familiar with the concept of a warrior’s perspective?”

“For sure,” you nod. “Bushi no me, in the samurai’s teachings.”

“Lord Pain sees things as though from the perspective of a god,” Tenshi-sensei tells you. “That is why I am the one who manages most affairs within Amegakure. I may be called ‘Angel’ by the villagers, but it isn’t the perspective of an ‘angel’ which I bring to my duties.”

She's Nyoka "of the Storm", so it's water and lightning. And I'm betting Storm as a result. I'm looking forward to some cooperative Storm style ninjutsus, where Naori handles shaping and manipulating the technique while Nyoka handles the nature change and probably adds some power to it.

“… why me?”

“Because you are my student.”

Her answer comes as though it was rehearsed well in advance… it’s easy to see through it, and so you press. But only slightly.

“You knew my father,” you press. “But how well, and for how long, doing what? What led you to feel so strongly towards me that you decided to all but take me in after seeing me once in a crowd?”

This answer is slower in coming than the first. Genuine words usually do. But eventually, your sensei begins to weave a story for you.

“Pain and I were orphaned in the Second Word War,” she tells you, “along with a third… a boy, Yahiko. You learned the Rasengan from Jiraiya of the Sannin?”

You nod quietly.

“It was Jiraiya-sensei who taught the three of us how to survive after the war, and how to fight,” she continues solemnly. “It was also Jiraiya-sensei’s teaching which ultimately led us to found the Akatsuki, led not by Pain, but by Yahiko.”

You realize immediately what it is that Tenshi-sensei isn’t saying. “Yahiko passed away, didn’t he?”

Tenshi-sensei nods, her expression sad… as if recalling old heartbreak. “He killed himself… using Pain’s kunai to do it.”

She senses your confusion, so continues. “Hanzō took exception to our goals of bringing peace to Amegakure if it would threaten his rule. He captured me as a bargaining chip, to destroy Akatsuki’s leadership.”

“Your father, along with the others in our organization, were simultaneously executed by Konoha ANBU allied with Hanzō… no official records of Konoha’s involvement exist.”

>So what has become of the Akatsuki since then, Tenshi-sensei?

You’re quiet for a while as you ponder something that’s been bothering you, which now you can’t possibly ignore. It bothers you that not only do you not know your own sensei’s name, she seems not to want to use it… like it’s unimportant.

“Sensei,” you begin, your tone cautious and guarded. “I’ve been aware for a while that I… don’t actually even know your real name. ‘Tenshi’ is the role you play for Pain, but it isn’t who you are, is it?”

She frowns, briefly repeating the question. “My name...”

“… please.”

A moment of eye contact. A deep, cleansing breath, and a sense that for her this is a momentous occasion.

“My name is Konan. But please, just call me ‘sensei’ when others are present.” Just saying it seems to come as a relief to her, as though a great weight has been lifted.

“Konan-sensei, then,” you bow politely, “thank you. I’m happy to finally have a name for the one I’ve come to respect.”

“As for ‘Pain’, I assume that’s not his real name either?”

Konan-sensei shakes her head sadly. “He took the name Pain on that day. It’s the name he has chosen for himself as the leader of the Akatsuki.”

“No, yeah,” you muse, “that’s what I was about to ask.”

“Our objectives remain the same,” Konan-sensei informs you, “though our membership looks quite different today. Pain’s methods are also less idealistic than Yahiko’s… albeit, perhaps much more realistic.”

>What is different about the current members of the Akatsuki, and why haven’t I met any of them?
>Why did you return to Amegakure? Not only that, but you killed Hanzō as well?
>To what degree do you blame Konoha? Your sensei was from there, but my bet is that ‘ROOT’ assisted Hanzō.

“To what degree do you blame Konohagakure?” you ask carefully, watching Konan-sensei’s reactions.

Eventually she nods slowly. “I would be lying if I said ‘not at all’… because they were involved. Some may blame the Second World War on them entirely, though the truth is always more complicated. Hanzō was just as much to blame, as were the Kages at the time.”

“If war is simply a continuation of politics ‘by other means’, then it was no one person or even one side that failed. It was a failure of the system in which those actors were operating.”

“I ran across some information in the village last time,” you admit with a frown. “A group that existed within their ANBU at the time of the Second World War, called ROOT.”

“I have heard rumors,” Konan-sensei tells you. “Nothing substantial of course, but the rumors surrounding Danzō of the Leaf… are dark. Perhaps this darkness and the one of which you have heard are related?”

“Maybe,” you agree. “If we were to nominate a short list of possible ‘points of failure’ in this ‘system’ you mentioned, a man like that and an organization like what ROOT is rumored to have been feel like natural inclusions.”

“Even one of the Sannin had to admit that ROOT ‘went too far’ in their freedom… something that went beyond the questionable acts which the Third Hokage previously tolerated.”

“In any event, it is a goal of the Akatsuki to introduce a fundamental change,” Konan-sensei concludes with a slight frown. “That was Yahiko’s goal before he passed it to us, and it is Lord Pain’s goal now.”

“I will tell you more, when the time is right. But for now leave the Akatsuki and its mission to us.”

“Uchiha Itachi-han is a member of the Akatsuki, isn’t he?” you ask. Konan-sensei doesn’t seem surprised in the slightest.

“He is,” she nods. “I suppose it was only a matter of time before you made the connection.”

“Could you possibly arrange for us to meet?” you ask. “There are some things I would like to ask him… I think you know what those things are.”

“I do know,” Konan-sensei admits, “and I don’t think a meeting should be difficult to arrange. Itachi-san has expressed some interest in meeting you as well.”

That comes as a surprise. “He has?”

Konan-sensei nods calmly. “I do not know why. He mentioned running across your team during the course of his mission to collect the bounty on Kurosuki Raiga and his swords, though he kept any personal thoughts to himself. Itachi-san is a true professional in that regard.”

“He frequents a small cafe on the outskirts of the village,” your sensei informs you. “If you give me a few minutes I can confirm whether he is there or not.”

Konan-sensei extends her arm, and it quickly dissolves into paper pieces which fold themselves midair into butterflies. You make careful note of how they’re folded… you think you can probably replicate it, though not quite in the same fashion that Konan-sensei can do it.

It takes her about a half hour, but eventually her arm starts to reconstitute itself from the same paper she sent out before.

“Itachi-san is waiting for you at the cafe,” she informs you, leaving one origami butterfly on her fingertip which then flutters in front of you. “I will serve as your guide.”

“Thank you, Konan-sensei,” you bow politely. “You’ve placed a lot of faith in me… I appreciate that, and I won’t let you regret it.”

“Good to hear,” she nods back to you. “Now go… you should not keep Itachi-san waiting.”

In a quiet cafe, not too far from the lake, you find him seated in a darker corner. You step in from out of the rain, with Konan-sensei's origami butterfly landing on your outstretched fingertip.

Uchiha Itachi gestures for you to sit on the bench across from him.

Once you get a closer look at him, he seems... profoundly tired. His face is etched with it even more deeply than his Konohagakure headband is etched with signs of his betrayal. His eyes are both red, with the visible black pattern of the fully-matured sharingan.

"So... how does this work, Uchiha Itachi-han?" you ask nervously. "Do you speak first, do I speak first?"

"It's just Itachi," he insists quietly. "Tea?"

You quietly order a serving of green tea with a wagashi, which comes out promptly as Itachi-han watches you with a keen, albeit silent, interest. After you take your first sip he speaks again.

“I love traditional cafes like this one,” he informs you. “I find their quaint, humble character to be relaxing.”

“It is very nice,” you agree.

“You competed in the Chūnin exams, solo,” Itachi-han muses. “I was the last to do so in Konoha.”

“So you were the ‘little prick’ that Anko-han mentioned?” you chuckle.

He shuts his eyes, the faintest traces of a smile tugging at his cheeks. “I fear so… Anko-san’s assessment is not incorrect. I was arrogant as a child, over-confident in my own abilities.”

“You have questions for me. I suppose I may have some answers for you.”

“Whose eye is this?” you blurt out, tapping at the scar just below your left eye.

Itachi-han narrows his gaze. “You do not intend to ask if what Sasuke-kun told you is true?”

You shake your head. “Whatever’s between you and your brother isn’t my business. But you implanted someone else’s eye into my head without my consent, and that is very much my business.”

“That eye belonged to a girl, about your age, who I killed,” Itachi explains, his face an emotionless mask… one you realize he would not need to force at all were there no emotions to hide.

This girl… it logically means that it would have been an Uchiha, despite the fact that Itachi-han is playing this close to his chest that much is obvious. If it were otherwise, he wouldn’t be doing his best to keep details from you. Taken together with the fact that he went to the trouble of sealing it, it’s clear that this was a teenaged girl who could use the sharingan.

“I wish to know who to pay my respects to,” you press.

Itachi-han’s gaze grows less harsh, and more appraising, before he offers his response. “Her name was Uchiha Izumi. I do not intend to answer any further questions about her, or her eye.”

“Though I would be willing to converse with you, at least until I have finished my tea.”

It doesn’t seem like there’s much left in his cup, which means you don’t have long. He takes another sip, as if to drive the point home.

Maybe check the wiki on that one anons. That's... that's a hell of a thing to give us. It's something we couldn't possibly IC know, but that's a HELL of a gift. Like, I'm fairly sure even now that Naori doesn't really grasp the significance of the Sharingan, seeing at as just an overblown kekkai genkai. While she gets that it's a Bad Thing if anyone finds out, she doesn't really *get it*. But that it's Izumi's... whatever it was that Itachi saw in us, he saw something special.

Otherwise, not a fan of asking about Akatsuki or his motives, as we don't know him well, don't know jack about Akatsuki, and there will be plenty of time to meet him again later when we're better acquainted.

“I… apologize if I offended you,” you sigh, setting aside your own cup of tea. “But please try to understand, Itachi-han… whatever your reasons, and I have no earthly idea what those might be, this is all super dangerous for me.”

“Your life as a member of the Uzumaki clan was always going to be dangerous,” Itachi-han counters in a flat tone. “That is in your blood, Raishō Naori. It has hung over your clan’s heads since the fall of Uzushiogakure… it was the reason your mother never went by her real name, not even with you.”

“What do you know of my mother?” you frown.

Itachi takes another sip. “I have done some research since our meeting. The paper trails were in disarray, but I did find her name.”

“I can tell you… but you have time for one question now,” he tells you, swirling his tea in the cup. “One question, and maybe one answer, depending on the question.”

Like I said earlier, the clan option is almost certainly gonna be one we don't know him well enough for him to tell us about, nor one that we really have the context to understand fully. Also, he knows we know Sasuke, so telling us about it could make it back to Sasuke, making it potentially risky to the whole grooming Sasuke to kill him thing.

The one about Akatsuki is kinda a waste of our question. Konan will almost certainly explain it when time is right to hear it. I won't call it a total waste, because it'd be interesting to see what he'd say, but it's ultimately something we can learn elsewhere.

Our mother's name isn't. We're not going to learn that anywhere else anytime soon. This could be our only chance.

After considering your position for a moment, you sigh. It’s clear that you really have no reasonable alternate question… he’s not going to give you any reasonable answers to most of the questions you have, and he’s clearly been sizing you up with his sharingan this entire time. It’s not just to intimidate you, he’s using his increased visual acuity as an interrogation method. So the more intense a discussion you have the more information you’ll be giving away to him about your thoughts, your personality, and your mental state.

And he clearly knows that you’ve gotten this far, and you both know without confirming it in each other that you won’t get as much information out of Itachi-han’s reactions as he will out of yours.

Luckily, your heart and mind are in agreement on what you want to know from him.

“I want to know what name my mother was born with,” you admit. “She didn’t choose to abandon her name, she chose to protect me… now that I know that much, there’s no reason not to know the name she sacrificed for that purpose.”

Itachi-han’s expression betrays the faintest hints of satisfaction. “Your mother’s name was Uzumaki Makoto, who herself was the grand-daughter of Uzumaki Rinko.”

You shake your head. “Yeah, no… if that name is supposed to mean something to me, it doesn’t.”

“It means that your mother was the great-granddaughter of Senju Tobirama,” Itachi-han summarizes, “by his daughter, who as many Senju did in that time married into the Uzumaki clan: the Senju’s strongest allies and distant relatives.”

“You learned… all of that?” you wonder aloud.

“Once I had your mother’s name, it was easy enough,” he admits. “After all I was once a shinobi of Konohagakure.”

You don’t really see how that would… wait, does he mean he snuck back into Konoha to browse their records? Or did he get that information from the ruins of Uzushiogakure? Or was it something else?

“That is the end of our discussion, I’m afraid,” Itachi-han bows politely, setting aside his now-empty cup. “If you would do me a favor and pay your respects to Makoto-san’s grave, that would make the effort I went to in learning that information worthwhile.”

No sense pushing our luck. Uchiha are cats. Come on too strong and they vanish. If he wants to meet again, we'll meet him again, simple as that.

You bow politely. “Thank you for meeting with me, Itachi-han… and for the two names you’ve given me.”

“Now I can pay my respects properly.”

Uchiha Itachi leaves you alone in the cafe to finish your tea without another word, though you don’t sense any animosity at least. So you figure things could easily have gone much worse.

You take the rest of the afternoon to see to a few things. The first is that you write a short letter to Fū, wishing her well and sharing a description of some of the things you saw while in Sunagakure… like the garden that Temari took you to. She ought to enjoy that. Next you write a short courtesy letter to Kurotsuchi responding to her last letter, keeping that correspondence alive.

Then you head for a rather small and austere memorial above Amegakure’s rather small pleasure district… your mother, whatever you choose to call her, was never one to go overboard on such things. She would have been very cautious to avoid being forever commemorated as someone with poor taste, and a tacky shrine would have secured just such a postmortem reputation. So instead her shrine is simple: flat roof surfaces at a steep pitch over polished hardwood rafters and beams, with gilded fittings on and around the doors. Her public name, ‘Tenran’, is painted on a plaque in the center of a miniature stone lantern at the corner, beside the little scale stairs leading up to the shrine itself. Little ornamental plants are laid out around the shrine’s base, providing splashes of natural color throughout the year.

You light an offering of incense.

“Uzumaki Makoto...” you muse quietly. “I wish I had known it while you were still with us, but I understand why you kept it from me… your name was just one more thing you sacrificed for my sake, wasn’t it?”

Of course she can’t reply.

You bow deeply to your mother’s grave. “I swear, I won’t let those sacrifices go to waste.”

Days turn to weeks.

But eventually, after a whole slew of uninteresting missions within the village, you receive a summons to meet with Konan-sensei in the meeting hall where she assigns missions to… well, to any team that isn’t you. Arriving just before the scheduled time, you find three teams already assembled: Team Ajisai, Team Ibuki, and Team Oboro.

“… unlucky...” Oboro mutters under his breath.

“Yeah, you realize that rebreather amplifies your voice, right?” you counter, arching an eyebrow in his direction.

“Wait,” he frowns. “Does that mean...”

“It does,” Ajisai confirms gruffly. “You’re just figuring it out?”

“Every time you’ve muttered something under your breath,” you smirk, “everyone could hear it. We were just waiting for you to figure it out on your own.”

“Why you little...”

“Restrain yourselves,” Konan-sensei orders as she appears on the balcony above you and the assembled teams. “Your mission will be to investigate the region of Otogakure for traces of the criminal activities of Orochimaru of the Sannin. Team Ajisai, Team Ibuki, and Team Oboro will each be assigned a jōnin team leader.”

That leaves…

“And my orders, Tenshi-sensei?” you ask quietly.

“You are to coordinate our three teams with the teams sent by Konohagakure and Sunagakure,” Konan-sensei informs you. “You will maintain radio contact with teams Ajisai, Ibuki, and Oboro.”

“Who are my counterparts from Konoha and Suna?”

Konan-sensei tosses you a scroll, witch you catch in your hand.

“The details are contained in that scroll,” she declares. “Report directly to me when and however you are able.”

The scroll gives a list of your contacts for Sunagakure and Konohagakure: from the latter, you’re due to engage with the leaders of Team Asuma, Team Kurenai, and a team of ANBU agents. From the former, you expect to meet with Team Baki, Team Ameno, and a team of Suna’s ANBU.

Also included is a suggestion, in a note handwritten by Konan-sensei herself: she suggests that donning an ANBU mask might not be out of the question, as your mission is more or less in line with one that would normally be assigned to an ANBU agent.

“Team Asuma is decent enough,” you admit to Ajisai when she asks you after the meeting. “Asuma-sensei himself is a powerful jōnin, and his students seem to work well together.”

“And the other team were all trackers, weren’t they?” Harusame asks you curiously.”They’re the ones you mentioned after that stupid mission for the Warm Water?”

You nod. “Yes, that’s right.”

“Team Baki are the ones who killed Shigure and his teammates, weren’t they?” Oboro muses, the smirk conveyed solely through his tone of voice. “Are we sure there’s not a chance to… even the score, if you will?”

You shrug. “You think you can kill Gaara more power to you. But unless you’ve gotten way stronger each of team Baki’s members could take your whole team single-handed, and Baki is another skilled jōnin. A wind-release user, super straight-forward. Fast, too.”

“What about this Team Ameno?” Karin chimes in.

“Never heard of ‘em,” you admit.

Tengu mask?
Naori is going to have to change clothes and seal her sword or get an umbrella built to sheathe it if she's gonna hide her identity. Which is probably a decent idea if Baki will be there.

Konoha's Anbu is linked to Root. That's the faction to worry about.

>>3999666
I've always had the inkling that Anbu masks are one of those 'polite fiction' type things. Where anyone who matters can probably figure out who you are under the mask, but it's the custom to look the other way.

But Konan wouldn't have suggested it if it wasn't useful.

Ehh. It doesn't really hurt, and it makes us look cool. The people we know will figure it out, but no sense bandying Naori's face around with Orochimaru's forces on the other end. That's probably not a great idea.
>>
>>3999212
You have to make a few slight changes before it’s time to leave, to make better use of the mask you intend to wear.

Amegakure ANBU masks differ somewhat from those of other hidden villages, being based around the respirator mask that was once worn by Hanzō of the Salamander which includes a heavier forehead protector with integral cheek guards. This you wear over a tight-fit hood to hide your red hair, and under a deep hooded cloak to make it not look like you’re hiding your hair. Then the last piece, which separates the ANBU mask from an ordinary respirator: a fine reinforced porcelain mask which runs from headband to respirator, and between the cheek guards. As is Amegakure tradition, this mask is blank white.

In terms of matching weapons you select three parasols with hidden swords inside their handles, and seal Umekiri into your palm. These are what you’ll be relying on when anyone from another village can see you, and when Umekiri’s specialized abilities aren’t needed.

“No names,” you remind the team leaders before you head out towards the rendezvous point.

Soon after crossing the border into the Land of Fire, you’re met by what you presume to be your escorts… including one familiar ‘face’, as it were. It’s a team of five Konoha ANBU, who don’t even try to make their presence discrete.

“You would be our ANBU contacts?” you ask the group after signalling for your three teams to stop.

“We can...” one of the jōnin in charge of the Ame teams interjects, earning a sharp glare.

“Pecking order,” you reprimand him, pointing to your mask. Regardless of what he may think is going on here, the fact that you were issued an ANBU mask at all for this mission makes the intention clear. Amegakure’s ANBU are not a dedicated unit, but are pulled on an ad-hoc basis from the regular forces using a list of individuals with specific, often extremely specialized talents.

He doesn’t know who you are, you made sure to be wearing the mask by the time you met the teams for this mission so he’s never seen your face. But what he should know is that you were selected to serve as ANBU right now, so he should know better than to question you.

“Forgive him,” you apologize to the Konoha ANBU. “The jōnin are not fully aware of my role in this mission… the briefing scroll was not explicit.”

“One young woman... here as our counterpart,” Yūgao acknowledges you from behind her cat-like mask. You can recognize her easily from the time you met during the chūnin exams… you wonder if she can say the same of you?

You incline your head, exaggerating the gesture slightly to make sure she can recognize it despite the mask. “Yes, just as you are the counterparts to the team of ANBU from Sunagakure.”

“Some of us aren’t too thrilled about this arrangement,” one of the other ANBU, who wears a mask reminiscent of a tiger, admits.

“I’m sure we all feel a little on-edge,” you sigh, shaking your head. “But I’m just as sure none of us are here with any ill intent. So if nobody starts anything, there won’t be anything.”

You turn your focus entirely to Yūgao, singling her out. “Agreed?”

She examines you carefully, then makes an exaggerated nodding gesture. “Agreed. We will be holding here until the teams from Sunagakure and Konohagakure join us later today. From there we will escort you all across our territory to the border of the Land of Sound.”

“There are no other orders.”

You spare a glance at your own teams, your gaze lingering on Karin for a moment. She shakes your head, confirming that she senses no lie in Yūgao’s words either.

“I assume no one has any objections to waiting around a bit?” you ask your teams’ jōnin.

When no one raises any objections, you settle in to wait for the other teams.

Team Asuma and Team Kurenai arrive first, with the genin of Team Asuma showing now evidence of recognition. Team Kurenai however is a problem. Of this second genin team it’s initially surprising when Akamaru begins to yap excitedly.

“What is it, Akamaru? You say you know this chick?”

You glare sharply at the pup, and the pup seems to realize that he’s attracted your attention because he abruptly stops yapping.

“You must just be imagining it, Akamaru,” Kiba shrugs. “There’s no way you’d recognize an ANBU from another village… and if we’d ever met a chick that scary I think I’d remember it too.”

The teams from Sunagakure arrive not long after: the Sand siblings along with Baki, whose arm is in a sling, are familiar to you. The other trio consists of a brown-haired young woman with a simple white tunic of sorts and a red sash, a dark-haired man with sunken cheeks and three-quarters-length sleeves, and a messy-haired young man with a brown vest and rolled-up sleeves. That must be Team Ameno, though you have no idea which among them the name belongs to.

The team of Suna ANBU also arrive at the same time, seemingly a cell of three who are accompanying Baki.

Yūgao’s team escorts you until nightfall, when the various teams set up separate encampments. The Amegakure teams are clustered together, with only Oboro’s team maintaining some distance from the others. Despite this, Team Ibuki and Team Ajisai are more or less quiet. The two Konoha genin teams are camped together along with their senseis, while their ANBU maintain a perimeter. The Sunagakure shinobi do the same, although Team Baki and Team Ameno seem to be even less talkative than your own teams are.

Feel free to cut the tsukumogami question if it doesn't make sense. Just figured that Naori is fairly sharp, and while it has been a while, we met this lady before during two heavily sword related events, so it doesn't feel too reaching to have her draw the conclusion.

(we've had 3 events with sword lady now, and I don't want it to go unattended and fall by the wayside in case it's important. Nor do I want to dance around it and have it drag out. You’re not entirely sure what you have sealed right now in terms of hot drinks, but if this is a dream it really shouldn’t matter, should it? That’s not how dreams work. So you unseal two cups of coffee from a scroll, smiling as you offer one to her.

This should be interesting… will she remove her mask? Or will she merely lift it a little, and leave her face accidentally visible?

She doesn’t accept the cup at first, so you’re not sure that your ploy is going to work. That is, until she takes a small knife and slams it pommel-first into the mask to shatter its lower quarter or so away. This exposes her mouth and chin, up to just under her nose… you’d say based solely on her jawline and her ever-so-slightly pouty lips that she’d be pretty under the rest of that mask.

Then she accepts the coffee from you, sipping gingerly at it while it’s still hot.

“You don’t talk much, do you?”

She shakes her head.

A thought occurs to you. “Can you talk?”

After a moment, she shakes her head again. Then she sets the coffee cup aside, before drawing the kodachi at her side and patting its spine lightly with her fingertips.

“So you are my sword after all?” you muse. “That’s what you’re trying to tell me?”

The masked figure nods.

“… Okuni, then,” you incline your head politely. “Guess that’s nice to meet you.”

The masked figure stares at you, then touches her fingertips to her collarbone.

“Yes, you!” you chuckle. “That was your original name, right? Okuni Ichimonji… before you were renamed by Nidaime Kotetsu.”

Your own fingertips hover just above the familiar blade. “This choji-midare is the exact same as my sword’s, but there’s no horimono engraved into it. That’s how I know.”

Eventually, Okuni nods in agreement.

“I’m sorry for destroying your fittings before,” you apologize, bowing politely. “And thank you… I had the chance to talk with Itachi-han about it, but even before that without you in my hands I’d have been killed. I wouldn’t be here.”

Okuni nods curtly. You can’t quite tell if she’s acknowledging that you owe her your life, of she expects you to say something more, or what. It’s difficult when you can’t see any facial features.

“With your leave I’d like to continue wielding you.”

Okuni nods again.

“Awesome!” you smile. “I guess as we get more and more used to each other I’ll be seeing more of you?”

This time, Okuni shakes her head.

“No?”

She repeats the gesture.

“Do you know how to write?”

Okuni stares at you. No, you suppose a sword who has never even had hands or eyes in the physical sense wouldn’t be literate, would it? So your options are either to teach a mute sword how to write in kana, or play twenty questions until you can figure out what she actually means whenever the answer you want isn’t a matter of yes and no.

“Did you mean that I will actually see less of you?”

Okuni nods.

“Is it because of something that will be happening to you?”

Okuni shakes her head.

“Something that will happen to me?”

She shakes her head again.

“Then… both of us?”

Okuni nods.

Okuni shakes her head.

“Great,” you sigh, wiping your brow dramatically. “Cause I don’t think I’d look too great in silver.”

There’s a protracted pause… but eventually you hear Okuni make a noise. At first it’s more like a mimicry of laughter, from someone who’s never heard laughter. After a little while, it starts to sound a little more normal.

“So, if it’s not some kind of weird fusion, then… I guess that means we won’t be seeing each other?”

Okuni nods.

“So more like continuous empathy rather than appearing to me in dreams?”

This round of nodding is particularly emphatic.

Okuni seems happy with that, based on her smile.

“You… have a face under that mask, don’t you?” you muse.

Okuni nods, and briefly lifts her mask…

“You alive in there?” Arashi demands.

Your hand finds the base of his neck in the moment of disorientation which follows, before you release him just as abruptly.

“Sorry!” you quickly apologize. “I was having a pretty vivid dream.”

You recall what you saw just before having been awakened… dark eyes, friendly and focused, with angular red tattoos on her cheeks not dissimilar to the ones you’ve seen on Inuzuka Kiba.

“Are you okay?”

Karin examines you carefully after you catch yourself glancing down at your sword, which has become un-sealed somehow. Probably when you were rudely awakened just now.

“I’m fine, by the way,” Arashi mutters.

“Your chakra feels...”

You place a fingertip over Karin’s mouth, insisting that she shut up. “You didn’t sense anything.”

“I… what?”

“If anyone asks nothing happened, you didn’t sense anything,” you insist.

“… okay?”

“Good.”

You sense that within your blade… no, you’re just going to call it Umekiri for simplicity’s sake. The manifestation you were speaking to in your dream may have been based on its original identity as Okuni Ichimonji, but that’s not what you’re dealing with here. The blade has been changed, whether it is aware of that or not, and this apparent synchronization of your chakra with its own ‘fickle’ chakra metal… and with the residual chakra of possibly dozens of previous Uzumaki wielders, if you’re right about what is actually happening…

There’s a certain unaccountable but also undeniable vitality there that you had not noticed previously, like the impression of having a living being in your hands rather than an artistically-figured piece of steel.

In any event, you’d prefer not to broadcast the fact that you’ve begun to synchronize with this sword, and for now it would be easier to avoid answering the thorny questions of what precisely Umekiri counts as: a teammate, or a tool.

As much as you regret it, the charade is best kept up for the duration of this mission. The next time you have any similar ANBU work to handle you can deal with Umekiri differently.
>1/2
>>
>>4004358
Hmm if we knew she had become unsealed I think people would have voted differently.
You are not supposed to be able to seal living things correct? Wouldn't want to risk killing her, or even just re-sealing her.
>>
>>4004375
I think we roled for keeping her sealed, failed and she became unsealed.
I bet the change in her and us unraveled the sealing formula
>>
>>4004375
While it is possible, albeit difficult, to seal a living being Umekiri isn't 'alive' in the same sense that Samehada is. She's a chakra metal sword that's grown to be self-aware due to the residual chakra impressions left by a succession of Uzumaki wielders, the Uzumaki clan being noted for the unusual vitality of their chakra. Her personality is a gestalt of the attitudes and personalities of her past wielders while they were running their chakra into her.

tl;dr having Uzumaki chakra running through a particularly fine chakra sword for long enough gave that sword a personality.
>>

It’s almost surprising how little discussion there is during the rest of your escort through the Land of Fire, but you should probably have expected as much. A rather clear testimony to the fact that even in the shinobi world something a simple as hiding your face behind a mask tends to work more often than not, even when you’ve actually met most of these people before.

At the border with the Land of Sound, the various jōnin meet to discuss the assignments and delegation of responsibilities within the broader search efforts. Both the Sunagakure and Konohagakure ANBU hang back, and you do the same, presumably because of the stark difference in your respective orders.

“I’m rather surprised, Baki,” you address your key Suna counterpart without formalities… your accidental use of -han might serve to jog his memory.

He glances at you past his half-face veil. “About?”

“You aren’t with your team.”

“Those three don’t need me,” he grumbles. “Not anymore, at least.”

“I see,” you shrug. “One of them stepped up as a leader after that debacle?”

“Gaara, as it happened,” Baki admits. “It came as a surprise to everyone… even to him I think.”

Maybe hold off on the origami thing? I know we weren't supposed to use paper shuriken where Jiraiya might hear about it, and using it around a bunch of Konoha Anbu is a great way for Jiraiya to get a mission report about a skilled Ame kunoichi who uses elaborate ninja origami.

Sure, we're probably gonna blow our cover by the end of the mission and he'll know it's just Naori, but Konan is something far enough in the past that it's preferable not to remind him of it at all.

We can still hand out papers, just tell people they're seals or chakra paper or whatever the fuck.

You decide to take certain precautions, distributing folded pieces of origami to your comrades in the Amegakure teams. To Team Oboro you give three paper shuriken marked with the kanji for ‘jerk’. To Team Ibuki you give three folded paper cranes, each marked with a different kanji less insulting than Team Oboro’s: ‘horse’, ‘tiger’, and ‘snake’. And to Team Ajisai you give three folded paper butterflies marked with the kanji for three traditional colors; ‘terigaki’ or glazed persimmon red, ‘kitsurubami’ or golden-oak yellow, and ‘seiji’ or celadon blue.

“These will serve as tracking devices,” you tell the three teams. “With this I’ll be able to keep track of you from a distance, and it’ll give us something to work with in case of an emergency. Keep them on your person, and out of sight.”

“Why?” Oboro asks suspiciously.

You shrug. “Because the other villages’ teams will be making similar arrangements.”

There’s a noticeable pause before Oboro nods in understanding. “Ah.”

“Yeah.”

It takes three days to get a good feel for the area, your own teams stubbornly avoiding contact with civilians all the while. There are a few points where Team Oboro is forced to engage other genin, but with Karin’s help and Team Ajisai being full of sensor-type shinobi, there’s little in the way of other conflicts.

You gather by Baki and the Konoha ANBU’s chatter that the other teams aren’t so fortunate. Team Asuma has to return the next day after Choji got his jaw busted by what you gather was a particularly large Oto-nin, and on the morning of the third day Team Kurenai has to withdraw to treat a bad kunai wound in Hyūga Hinata’s shoulder.

As it turns out Team Ameno has a medic-nin, so there’s little drama from them. Team Baki on the other hand fares well, though they appear to have little in the way of subtlety. Through Baki’s rather colorful commentary you gather that Gaara wiped out a chūnin team that made the mistake of attacking Temari while she was on a bathroom break… nobody got hurt of course, but you could practically hear Temari protesting the situation from here.

But sticking around with the other ANBU does give you a beneficial little bit of distance from the problems ‘on the ground’ and a chance to simply follow your tracking tags. By day six it becomes clear that something is definitely wrong.

By keeping track of the Ame teams’ movements on a hastily constructed sand table that serves as a chart. Eventually the pattern of movement shows that there’s one spot within Amegakure’s little section of the Land of Sound that no one has adequately searched. Instead, each team that approached it shifted their course slightly to avoid the center of this gap, which doesn’t clearly correspond with any particular geographic features on any map of the region.

“What’s this?”

Yūgao has approached you as you were busily checking your three slightly different maps of the Land of Sound. “Is that… a gap?”

You sigh. “Yeah, I was debating whether to tell anyone about it or investigate it myself.”

“I guess I shouldn’t be surprised you worked something like that out on your own,” Yūgao sighs, tilting up her mask so that it rests atop her head. “We were warned about you for a reason after all, Raishō-san.”

“Well then,” you sigh. “One of each of us should be involved… perhaps you and Baki would like to join me in investigating this gap?”

Yūgao disappears for several minutes, eventually returning with Baki in tow. The latter seems distinctly disgruntled with this arrangement, staring at you expectantly.

“I was told that you’d be able to convince me this is a good idea,” he grumbles.

Then you lift your mask.

There’s a prolonged silence.

“You have my attention.”

You replace the mask. “There’s a gap that the teams from Amegakure have clearly missed, for no readily apparent reason. They simply turned away from that spot on several distinct occasions… my best guess is that it was genjutsu.”

“And genjutsu means that someone is hiding something,” Baki agrees. “I see why you called me here.”

“Do you think you can trust me?” you ask him.

Baki looks you over appraisingly. “I accept your skill.”

“Is it your arm or my village?”

“Mostly your village,” Baki admits. “It’s difficult to ignore the long salamander-shaped shadow looming across the border.”

“I see,” you nod. “Do you think you can work past it?”

He nods. “I do.”

Why did we just reveal who we were? Even if she was somehow 100% sure that it was us.

I thought that was what was the point of the option that didn't address it, which is part of why I picked it. The other reason was to not give a reaction and imply that we knew that she knew. I guess there wasn't much point in entering Ninja Mind Games mode in hindsight.

And we have a winner. In-context, it's too simple a solution to just clear the air and trust in Baki's professionalism rather than let him find out the minute he sees her start fighting. Her self-taught style of swordplay, her summons, her fuin-shurikenjutsu, etc are all too distinctive for an experienced jonin to mistake for anyone BUT the girl who took his arm off.

And make no mistake: Yugao knows, Team Kurenai knows they just don't quite believe it yet, and Baki would have figured it out on his own. That level of perception and sensory ability will increasingly be the new norm as Naori takes on increasingly difficult and significant missions.

“I think our goal should be to fill in what the Ame teams have been missing, at least to begin with,” you offer. “Any disagreement?”

“None,” Baki shakes his head. “Things never go that smoothly in practice, but the idea is one I agree with.”

With no disagreement from Yūgao either, you use the map to find the area where Team Ajisai and Team Oboro have both been routed around, and once you get close you stop instead of pushing forward in the direction you think you should be going.

“You feel that as well?” Baki muses aloud.

You nod curtly. “Yeah, no… if I weren’t looking for it I wouldn’t have.”

“Probably the Sly Mind Affect,” Yūgao suggests, “used by someone skilled enough to make such a basic genjutsu work so effectively.”

“Well, no reason to let this keep being a thing,” you shrug, clasping your hands. “Genjutsu release!”

Baki and Yūgao do the same, and hold for a few seconds afterwards to make sure there wasn’t a second layer that you’ve all missed. With that possibility largely precluded after a full sixty seconds’ wait, you’re left to decide how best to proceed. You pull out the scroll with the map on it and lay it out on the dirt.

“So that’s the direction to the center,” Baki declares, “based on that hill being ahead, and the river being to the right.”

“So we’ll need to see what’s in there,” Yūgao nods curtly.

“Could you all look the other way for a moment?” you request. “I’m about to use a sensory technique.”

Baki and Yūgao both stare blankly at you as the tension slowly builds.

Eventually you huff in indignation. “I can’t do it when you’re looking.”

“Why?” Baki asks. “Teenage girl drama?”

“Yeah, no, when the head of your village tells you to keep a technique secret you keep the technique a secret,” you snap. “You wanna march in there yourselves without proper reconnaissance that’s fine by me, but we don’t have to. I can do it from here, but you’re gonna have to turn around… away from me… and not look while I do it.”

Baki throws his hands up in wordless frustration, but both he and Yūgao do as you demand. This lets you fold a handful of black paper butterflies from your sealed stock of paper, marking each with the characters for an exploding tag before sending them forward into the ‘dead zone’ you and your ersatz team have identified.

“You can look now.”

“So when will you know what we’re looking at?” Baki demands.

“Nine shinobi, none of them standouts in terms of their chakra,” you declare, “and none of them are the caster of the genjutsu we’re dealing with here.”

Baki seems somewhat taken aback. “What are they patrolling around?”

“It seems to be a small structure, at least above-ground,” you summarize what your black butterflies are letting you sense.

“You suspect it’s just the entrance,” Yūgao guesses.

You nod curtly. “It’d make no sense otherwise.”

“Well then I say we pay them a visit,” Baki declares, cracking his knuckles.

You bite your thumb, and swiftly make the required hand seals.

“Kuchiyose: Kijani!”

The dark bird appears atop the back of your outstretched hand, and you quickly shake him off onto the top branches of a nearby bush. Then you write onto a scroll using sealing script, before offering it to Kijani.

“I need you to take this back to Amegakure,” you tell him. “Sensitive. You know what to do.”

“Naturally,” he replies, stretching his neck out and opening his mouth.

You can see Baki’s reaction, and you assume his unease at watching a long-necked bird swallow a scroll is shared by Yūgao even though her face is still behind a mask. The letter of course is a contact update including everything you’ve encountered. Once he’s done swallowing the scroll Kijani reduces his neck and perches on the back of your hand.

“See you later,” you smile behind your own mask, before sending him off and skyward.

Yūgao creates a shadow clone, understanding what you’ve done, and sends the clone off towards Konohagakure’s search area to meet up with one of the jōnin. Baki unseals a tiny mechanical bird from a small scroll, and fits an equally tiny scroll into its body before winding it with a key sticking out of its back.

“Now let’s get the other ANBU agents in on this,” you suggest. “Can both of you make contact with your fellow villagers?”

Eventually the ANBU from the Sand and the Leaf join your team, seemingly without any dramatics.

“We should split the teams,” Baki suggests curtly. “We’ll work better that way.”

“Agreed,” Yūgao replies.

>We have three teams defending, three attacking. The mathematics are pretty straightforward.

Also for the actual combat, i'm going to suggest that we make use of genjutsu to hide mask our steps, then simply sneak up behind the enemy and kill them by slitting their throat.
The genjutsu protecting the area is highly effective and it's the middle of the night, so these guys probably don't expect anyone to enter anyways, and are likely not very alert, maybe even drowsy.

"If we work together, we should be able to take out all three teams simultaneously and secure the entrance," you observe. "But it would reduce the chance of a single mistake ruining the plan if I had teammates."

"For this purpose we can continue working together," Yugao nods in understanding. "Baki-san, I assume you have reached the same conclusion?"

"I have."

Several minutes later you find yourself hiding in a shrub, within sight of Yugao across a clearing, in ideal flanking positions. When she feels the time is correct, she gives you the prearranged signal to cast your genjutsu.

It's just a moment of disorientation, but it's enough for you and Yugao to seize the opening. Your poisoned paper shuriken throw one opponent off while you slice through a second with a hidden tanto that snaps off in the victim's armor, and Yugao uses a Shadow Clone-based technique to take out get own target... both of which turn out to be clones themselves.

The real defenders emerge from the ground... only to find themselves sliced apart by invisible blades of compressed air, courtesy of Baki.

You toss aside the destroyed blade and its accompanying parasol as the ANBU teams regroup at the entrance to the base you've uncovered: a gate of sorts set at the end of a defendable slit trench. On either side of the door you spy serpentine characters, leaving little doubt of whose orders led to the base's construction.

"From here we split up," Baki declares. "Good luck."

You split up, each village’s ANBU teams taking different pathways through the series of nondescript interconnected hallways which comprise this hideout. But rather than wandering around aimlessly, you leave a single paper butterfly positioned at the main entrance. Your reasoning is that if you move consistently away from the entrance you’ll be more likely to find the exit, and since you have a stationary marker at the entrance you’ll be more likely to avoid any attempts at misdirection.

Because of this strategy, you’re able to avoid no less than three obvious trap rooms along your chosen route.

It feels like an hour… but eventually you find something worth noting.

What you find is a man whose appearance matches the photos your mission assignment scroll contained for Orochimaru, along with a familiar young man with glasses and an unfamiliar young man with pale hair and red markings at the corners of his eyes and just above where his eyebrows should be.

They stop mid-evacuation, and you pause as well.

No one moves.

“You don’t look so good, Orochimaru-han,” you taunt the older shinobi with a smirk, noting that his arms appear to be withering like fruit left out in the sun too long. As though something has robbed them of their vitality and life.

“Better than you will in a moment,” he sneers, turning to leave. “Kill her.”

The first exchange is blindingly fast, a hail of small white projectiles launched by the young man with the red facial markings as the glasses nerd rushes forward with a glowing palm raised. Given the terrain…

You whip out your two remaining parasols and unleash a cloud of senbon, crowding the hallway and serving both as a defense against the incoming bullets and an attack that fills the narrow space. The bullets however shred your parasols, with one grazing your left thigh and provoking a faint hiss of pain as the charging shinobi bears down on you.

His palm shatters the first blade, but the second blade behind it survives the weakened force of the strike long enough for you to release the hilt of the broken sword and press the advantage against his stalled momentum.

“Rasengan!”

“Not again!” the young man protests as the blow shatters your sword’s spine and slams into his outstretched palm. While the chakra he’d gathered there spares his limb, the force of the attack sends him flying down the hallway and past his partner, who extends sharpened bones from his body to tear massive chunks out of the walls and ceiling.

He bows politely before he disappears behind the falling rubble.

>>
>>4013748
Deprived of your ability to pursue, you shift your attention to searching the area where you found those three, a shoulder-blow breaking your way into what looks like a small laboratory space adjacent to the hallway. The whole space is lit by two torches on each wall, the tables strewn with opened scrolls... some of which have been half-destroyed in the hasty retreat.

In this laboratory you quickly deduce that there are two things left of any value or significance. The first is the most obvious: a left hand in a jar of embalming fluid, which bears a slate blue ring on the little finger. Inscribed in this ring’s center is the character for ‘void’… it reminds you a lot of Konan-sensei’s ring. Thinking it may have some significance, or would at least serve as evidence that you did in fact succeed in tracking Orochimaru to his lair, you quickly seal the whole jar into a prepared scroll that you then tuck into a pouch on your flak jacket.

Your other discovery takes some time, as it’s not as immediately apparent what it is you’ve stumbled across. The sensation as it dawns on you what Orochimaru was doing here is equal parts visceral disgust and unaccountable curiosity: he was performing a reincarnation technique on human sacrifices.

You gather that two of the mostly-destroyed scrolls were intended for reincarnating two particular shinobi, though it’s impossible to say which shinobi those were due to the destruction of key passages within the formulae marked on them which would provide an identity. But they’re not useless per se, as they provide an almost complete account of the technique’s design on their own.

Also present are a few sheets of notes which have escaped damage, discussing relevant aspects of spacetime manipulation… in essence, the technique recorded here ‘summons’ the soul of a dead person into the body of a living one, overwriting the vital force of the victim into that of the summoned subject.

If you really wanted to, given sufficient time, you could probably recreate the technique from the materials you’ve now sealed into a second scroll. But that’s not the real question. The real question is whether you could bring yourself to sacrifice a human life in an experiment, for the sake of potentially improving this technique’s results by even the slightest margin. Potentially, you note: nothing about these experiments strikes you as particularly certain.

Could you really even use such a technique?

there's no Orochimaru substitution jutsu scroll is there?

It has only been used by orochimaru and sasuke and both have snake summons, yes, but Anko never used it, so either the Snakes didn't bother to teach her or it's something Orochimaru came up with. I don't think its origins are ever discussed.

>>4015292
>>4015293
Orochimaru is a snake yes, but Sasuke used the substitution during his fight with Itachi at the uchiha hideout and he is still (allegedly) human, which points to it not being a snake thing.
>>
>>4015482

or he just hasn't fully gotten used to the arm and it still taxes him to use it
>>
>>4015482
Yeah cause Sasuke absorbed Orochimaru after he tried to do the same to him, thus gaining some of his sneaky snake abilities.
>>
>>4014950
To trade a life for a life… it makes sense. It’s nicely symmetrical. But you’re not sure that you could use a technique like that, and you’re more certain that you couldn’t sacrifice human lives for the purpose of refining the technique to the point that you could make it usable in combat.

You end up storing the notes and examples anyway, just on the off chance that inspiration strikes you and you somehow find a way to perform the summoning ritual without the human sacrifice. The world is vast, and full of things you don’t yet understand, so there’s every possibility of such a workaround. Orochimaru strikes you as the type to perform the technique as designed regardless of any moral concerns, so you can’t count on his research to give you anything more to work with.

Kind of a mediocre roll. If anyone catches us in the act, the cover story is that the documents were too dangerous/monstrous for anyone to have. Naori's generally a paragon, so I feel like we can sell that lie.

Didn't get a chance to vote on it, but I'm glad we didn't vote for Naori to really go for it. Using/learning Impure World Resurrection and its ilk would be way out of character for us except for some highly specific situations.

You don’t have any elemental releases at your disposal… fire release in particular would be pretty useful right now. But you do have fūinjutsu, and there’s a trashcan nearby. So between the survival equipment you have sealed and what else has been left behind you’re able to set fire to the remaining notes.

If anyone else but you learns this… it’s called Edo Tensei, you note… it won’t be from Orochimaru’s notes. But as you watch the notes burn, you hear something from down the hallway that you can’t ignore. Crashes, explosions… many strong enough to shake dust and chunks of ceiling loose.

“The hell is going on out here...” you mutter, stepping out of the lab and coming face to face with three more Otogakure shinobi: one large man with no hair and a scar over his right eye, a second with dark hair and bushy eyebrows, and the third a pale young girl who you figure would look like she was on death’s doorstep even were she not presently so.

“Get Kagerō out of here!” the second man shouts, leaving the girl to the bald man’s care as he produces what looks like an oversized wabasami, like forged shears held together by a u-shaped piece of spring steal.

“There’s no way out this direction,” you observe, unsealing Umekiri and drawing her from her scabbard. “One of Orochimaru’s followers collapsed the tunnel.”

“No way...” the man with the scissors gasps, looking past you into the dimly lit corridor to see that you’re not lying. “He really abandoned us here to die, after all he promised…”

“We have to get out of here!” the bald man declares. “Kamikiri, we have to fight her!”

“Yeah, no, I’m really not interested,” you shrug. “But it looks like you’ve had a tough time with the other ANBU teams… that girl, ‘Kagerō’, is nearly dead. Surrendering to me is your best chance, I’ll even do what I can to save her life.”

“The alternative...”

You raise Umekiri, looking past her tip straight at the man carrying the dying girl. “What’ll it be?”

“Kamikiri… drop your weapon.”

“Jigumo?” the other man wonders aloud. “You mean we’re...”

“We’re not betraying anyone,” ‘Jigumo’ asserts. “We’ve already been betrayed.”

“We’ll need to get her out of here,” you declare, unsealing a small radio headset from a scroll and putting it to your ear. “Come on, back to the main entrance!”

You don’t quite make it before your escape is cut off by the appearance of Orochimaru… or rather someone who looks like Orochimaru, but lacks his visceral presence and intimidation factor. An imposter, you realize.

“Out of my way, imposter,” you begin to challenge the newcomer, before one of the men at your side speaks up.

“Arashi?” he asks, handing the girl’s limp body over to you. With little choice in the matter, you settle her in on your left should as he steps forward. “Arashi, we’re leaving… Orochimaru abandoned us, and Kagerō is dying. Our clan can’t survive this.”

The man posing as Arashi approaches what you take to be his clansman, before taking his giant scissors and running him through with them.

“If we can’t stop a few intruders, then our legacy as the Fūma clan dies here anyway,” he insists, squeezing the two blades together and slicing the other man’s spine. “You failed already, so your life is already over. Same as Jigumo, same as Kagerō… your continued existence only has meaning for this.”

“Arashi!” Jigumo roars in outrage, weaving several hand signs before expelling hundreds of tiny spiders from his mouth. “Girl, take Kagerō and run! If Arashi gets her as a Casualty Puppet you won’t be able to stop him… I can’t let my clan end that way, so I’ll buy you time!”

You don’t even know enough about this Kagerō’s ability to challenge his assertion, but from what you can tell keeping ‘Arashi’ manageable and Kagerō alive both require you to do the same thing… and as miserable a thing as it seems to do, it’s exactly what Jigumo is requesting of you.
>1/2
>>
>>4019827
“Understood.”

Arashi lashes out violently, his body no longer adhering to any clear rules or reasoning as it distorts into discolored tendrils. Somewhere near his shoulders the face of the man he just killed appears on the surface, his features worked up in apparent pain.

To escape you toss the girl through the air, drawing his attention… as well as your sword at the same time. As he extends to engulf her body you sever that extension effortlessly in a howl of pain, before turning to unseal and throw a handful of explosive anken that go off around his head and face… or rather his faces, plural.

Then you catch the girl and you’re off down the hallway.

“You can’t escape!” you hear Arashi shouting behind you as Jigumo buys you the time he promised with his life. “You’ll share my clan’s grave with me, and never leave this gods-forsaken hole again!

“What’s...” Yūgao asks in confusion as you nearly round the corner into each other.

“Wrong way!” you shout. “We’ll set an ambush at the entrance, don’t let that THING touch you!”

What remaining ANBU there are get the message quickly, including Baki and his team… what’s left of them anyway. Several are apparently dead now, having met with this underground labyrinth’s other inhabitants.

“Why are you carrying that girl!?” Baki demands.

“Fewer questions, more running!” you shout back as you hear a rumbling and scraping cacophony behind you. “How in the world is he actually catching us!?”

“We’re almost there!” Yūgao declares. “One last push!”

As you emerge from the dim hallways into the almost equally dim forest, where at least there’s open air to breathe, you put your charge down as gently as you have time for and turn to face the exit doorway. You mould your chakra, compressing and agitating it in preparation to apply a fūinjutsu formula to it. But before you get the chance a hail of shuriken explodes from the opening. While you’re able to parry, the monstrous foe that was chasing you manages to slip out into the open.

You can tell what it’s planning to do even before it commits to the attack, which is why you can move quickly enough to intercept. The hardened tendrils don’t hit Kagerō, who’s utterly defenseless… but instead one impales you through the side of your gut.

“Ergh,” you grumble, not so much at the pain as the sudden appearance of blood inside your rebreather. At this rate it’s just going to clog the filters and make it harder to breathe, so you sever the tendril with Umekiri and pull it out. Then you rip the whole mask assembly off, giving you a better chance to breathe.

A second attack on Kagerō is easily blocked using the tendril you cut off.

While it wasn’t what you had in mind, and you nearly lost control of the situation, the ANBU quickly turn the situation around. And you did manage to keep Kagerō from getting absorbed… so you’ll just treat this as part of the proverbial learning curve.

“Karin!” you bark into your earpiece. “I need you to double back… head directly south of your current position. There’s some medic-nin stuff for you to do.”

It takes only a few minutes for Team Ibuki to find you now that the genjutsu protecting this place has been dispelled, and your former teammates seem almost to panic.

“What happened!?” Harusame demands while Karin rushes to heal the wound in your gut.

You push Karin lightly towards Kagerō. “That’s our last intel source. Heal her first… she’s practically dead already.”

After examining her for a few moments, Karin begins treatment. “She has hardly any physical injuries, but she’s done a number on her chakra network. A simple transfer like this will stabilize her… we’ll reassess once she’s recovered consciousness.”

“I’m packing this off,” Harusame informs you. “There’s… not as much blood as I’d thought given how bad it is.”

“You really ARE a freak, aren’t you?”

“Yeah, no, was that ever really in doubt?”

After a few minutes, Karin finishes her chakra transfer and returns her attention to your wound.

She quickly shakes her head. “This isn’t good… I haven’t trained for this level of damage...”

Then she checks around her, gesturing for Arashi and the jōnin temporarily in charge of the team to try and get the ANBU nearest you to look away. Once this is accomplished, she pulls up her sleeve.

“Do it, quickly. And don’t give me any nonsense.”

You want to argue… but she’s clearly made up her mind. So instead of arguing you grudgingly accept her offer. After all, she seems determined to heal your wound and in her now-trained estimation this is the only way for her to do so effectively.

At first you don’t really bite her, much more of a nibble if anything. That earns you a swift chastisement.

“Harder.”

In response you bite down, breaking the skin on her wrist and causing her to wince. But after a second the whimper which follows morphs into a faint moan: not at all the sort of response you’d associate with ‘pain’. Just as quickly it seems like Karin catches herself, so quickly that were you not hyper-conscious of what you were inflicting on her you probably wouldn’t have noticed.

“Too hard?” you ask after you’ve drawn enough chakra to kick-start the healing process… this is a technique which heals grave wounds quickly for normal people, so it must be further accelerated by your own vitality.

Karin, her face flushed, is quick to avoid eye contact. “N-no… it’s just been a while, you know?”

“Anyway,” you reply, gingerly picking yourself up and dusting yourself off, “thanks for what you’ve done for me. I’ll try not to worry you again in the future, so that you won’t need to go to such extremes on my behalf.”

Now… for the uncomfortable part.

You have no problems with interrogation per se, but torture is something of a different matter. While there’s no compelling need to go too far in accommodating captured enemies there’s also no compelling reason to go out of the way to mistreat them either. A common value on human life and dignity would in fact seem to demand that there be certain guidelines to these situations, and most forms of deliberate torture violate the spirit behind the establishment of such guidelines.

what did we roll on by the way? Like, what would have changed had we done worse?
>>
>>4022097
It was rolling for how Karin's heal bite technique worked out.
>>
>>4021641
It takes an hour or two to organize your forces and withdraw to a town nearby, one of many small towns that dots the rolling hills and forests of the Land of Sound. You gather that these are the remnants of when this place was known as the Land of Rice Fields, and you can tell why: paddies extend for as far as you can see down the valleys between hilltops, flooded and terraced to squeeze every bushel out of the available space.

An arrangement is quickly reached.

Most of your teams head home to their respective villages, including Team Oboro, Team Ibuki, Team Baki, and Team Kurenai. Eventually all that remains are a handful of ANBU from Suna and Konoha, and Team Asuma.

“The prisoner is secure,” you announce, standing outside the room where Team Ajisai is watching over a heavily-bound Kagerō. “We’re going to interrogate her jointly, since there’s no formal treaty stating who gets long-term custody or the right to interrogate her first.”

“Understood,” the sole remaining Konoha ANBU, a member of Yūgao’s team, nods curtly.

“I’ll say this much right now, I don’t think much of torture,” you declare with a frown, “so I won’t be employing it and neither will any of you so long as I have anything to say about it.”

“I disagree,” the remaining Suna ANBU declares.

>If you don’t like it, leave. I don’t HAVE to involve you.

>>
>>4022177
“If you’re dissatisfied with the results you can feel free to take it up with my village at a later date,” you glare sharply at the ANBU behind his face veil. “But even if you don’t care about right and wrong in the process, the situation suggests to me that torture would be counterproductive anyway.”

The lazy, but from what you can tell brilliant, Nara Shikamaru glances at his sensei, who simply shrugs.

“You tell him.”

Shikamaru rolls his eyes, but steps up anyway. “She has a point. That girl’s probably been trained to resist torture, and torturing her when she’s already down from having been abandoned by Orochimaru and her clan being destroyed is likely to get her hackles up.”

“And what would a genin know about it?” the Sunagakure ANBU demands sharply.

“More than you apparently,” you smirk, before giving Shikamaru an appreciative nod. “One observer from each village will be present. Any more would be likely to put her on edge. Shikamaru, I want you to be one of them.”

“Hang on,” Choji protests. “Not Asuma-sensei?”

Asuma-han shrugs. “I think I see where she’s going with this, actually. Shikamaru’s a good choice.”

“Awesome, then it’s decided.”

Inside the room you greet Ajisai politely, before sending her outside. “I’m leaving security to you and your team. Take care of me.”

“Understood,” Ajisai nods curtly. “We’ll do just that.”

Once they’re outside, leaving you alone with the girl, you motion to Shikamaru for him to extend his shadow. Kagerō’s expression darkens somewhat when the Shadow Possession takes hold.

“Good,” you nod curtly. “This will prevent you from forming any hand seals, using any weapons, or even moving. So don’t even bother trying to escape, okay?”

When Kagerō nods in understanding, you begin.

“So yeah, I wanna make this clear from the start,” you declare. “This is an interrogation… not a torture session. How this is gonna work is I’ll ask a question, you either give me an answer or a reason you’re not answering. In either case if I think you’re lying I’ll push you on it, and if it comes down to it I’ll use the interrogation genjutsu on you. But that will only come as a last resort.”

“There’s no reason at all why this would have to get ugly. You understand?”

She nods again.

“Say the words please.”

“I understand,” Kagerō informs you curtly.

“Better,” you nod. “Now, first I want to know about you and your clan. Who are you, where are you from, why were you working for Orochimaru?”

After a few moments of tense silence that make you wonder if she’s already set to refuse your questioning, Kagerō relents.

“We are the Fūma clan, formerly of the Land of Rice Fields,” she declares. “Orochimaru promised us a revival of our clan and an improvement in our fortunes. Some of us took him up on that. Of those, I am the only survivor.”

“Are the ones who refused still alive?”

“Last I checked, yes.”

“Would they accept you if you returned to them?” you ask curiously.

Kagerō raises an eyebrow. “Is that concern for me?”

“I’m just trying to get the full picture.”

“They would,” Kagerō informs you. “If I am allowed to return to them, I will inform them of what happened… that Arashi, whom the rest of us believed in, was changed by Orochimaru’s influence. I would also suggest we withdraw to the Land of Hot Water, for our own safety.”

“So it wasn’t anger or fear, but your ambitions that he used to manipulate,” you muse thoughtfully, considering Kagerō’s account so far. “Kinda devious if you think about it, making you think it was your idea, that you could maybe be the one using him instead of the other way around.”

“That’s one way to look at it,” Shikamaru chimes in. “But that leaves the question of what Orochimaru got out of it that was a bigger deal than what he was offering.”

“Unless he never intended to honor his promises,” you counter. “Or it was some kind of monkey’s paw.”

Shikamaru nods in agreement. “Yeah, fair enough. I guess I kinda tend to assume people are on the level.”

“But it’s still a good question,” you admit, turning back to Kagerō. “Why do you think Orochimaru approached your clan in particular?”

“Our clan possesses a number of kinjutsu,” Kagerō replies. “Those were likely the reason for his interest in us.”

You frown. While this matches what you know about his use of the Edo Tensei technique, it’s not quite enough. “What sort of kinjutsu?”

“Two of them I know,” Kagerō tells you solemnly, “both of which are essentially murder-suicide techniques. The Ephemeral technique is what nearly killed me from overuse of my chakra, to produce a massively heightened combat state that ignores my body’s normal limits. There is also a chakra thread technique which connects the user’s heart and the victim’s, causing them to match beats. So if the user’s heart stops, so does the victim’s.”

“The third, Arashi knew,” Kagerō concludes, “a barrier ninjutsu which is capable of compressing anything caught within it. It snaps bone, crushes internal organs, ruptures blood vessels. An awful way to die.”

“One of my comrades died that way,” the Suna ANBU growls.

“Then you’ll take some comfort in the fact that the technique died with Arashi,” Kagerō tells him.

“I don’t.”

“Then that’s your problem,” Kagerō insists, shutting her eyes.

“What was that!?”

“Both of you, knock it off,” you snap, carefully controlling your tone to make it an order rather than a recognition that the situation was slipping out of your control. “Did Orochimaru learn any of your techniques?”

Kagerō shakes her head. “Not that I know of. But he did teach Arashi the Casualty Puppet, which seemed to be based in part on my ability to synchronize a heartbeat using chakra.”

“And also based on the Edo Tensei,” you reckon. “A version that’d be more useful in the middle of a fight, rather than one that has to be used between battles.”

“Edo Tensei?” Shikamaru repeats warily.

“A reanimation kinjutsu,” you clarify. “Evidently Orochimaru knows it, though I don’t know much more than that.”

You leave out the fact that you could probably teach yourself how to perform that technique, given a month or two and a supply of warm bodies to sacrifice. Seriously, how can such a dangerous and grotesque technique be so theoretically simple?
>1/2
>>
>>4025119
You can only reach one conclusion: whoever devised this technique was an idiot. Undeniably a brilliant and highly proficient shinobi, but a total dumbass with a habit of not thinking things through to their logical conclusions.

“Do you know anything more about his experiments?”

Kagerō shakes her head. “Few of us under Orochimaru ever see more than the one facility. Your best bet would be to capture one of the exceptions, those who work closely under Orochimaru in a more personal sense. Yakushi Kabuto, Kimimaro, or one of the Sound Four: Sakon, Jirōbō, Kidōmaru, and Tayuya.”

“I know precious little, if anything, about them. All I know is that they’re strong… Arashi always suspected that Orochimaru experiments on them to make them that way.”

“How would we go about finding the people you just mentioned?” you ask.

Kagerō shakes her head. “No.”

“No?” you repeat.

“You saw Orochimaru’s condition?” she asks you.

You narrow your eyes slightly, but you’re willing to see where she’s going with this. “Yes, I have.”

“With the loss of his arms Orochimaru will be relying even more heavily on others to act for him,” Kagerō explains. “My suspicion is that you won’t have to look for them.”

“And before you ask, I don’t know their strengths any more than you do. But it’s fair to suspect that kinjutsu are heavily involved.”

“You killed two of my comrades,” the Sunagakure ANBU declares, clearly frustrated at how this has all unfolded so far. “Under the orders of the man who killed our Kage and got us into a pointless war.”

“Do you really think the information you’ve given us is enough?”

Kagerō eyes the man warily, clearly trying to estimate her chances of breaking free and escaping if he does something... impertinent.
