The Lighthouse War is over, but conflict still continues.

With Erusea's defeat at the hands of the Osean Federation and the International United Nations, the imperial nation has splintered into a confusing mess of separatists, freedom fighters, warlords, rogue military factions, and those seeking to profit from the chaos. Worse, Erusea's many automated drone factories still remain intact, waiting for new masters to come to claim them.

The Usean continent remains in crisis, and it's up to a new generation of pilots to face this next generation threat...

You are MILLY, the "Red Tail", a Belkan Air Force pilot fighting for the IUN!

"My my, you both are looking quite scandalous!" MIsono giggles as you and Vicky step out of the changing room.

"You have some nerve to talk." You grumble as you glare at Misono. Since when the hell was she so damn curvy?

"This is embarrassing!" Vicky whimpers, instinctively hunched over as if she were naked. "It feels like I'm wearing nothing at all!"

As he had promised, Dr. Schroeder had delivered the new experimental G-suits that were supposed to provide better protection against G-forces than your regular flightsuits. However, unlike the regular flightsuits, these G-suits were almost skintight, and were certainly made of much lighter and thinner material.

While you enjoyed how Vicky was reacting to this, you were caught off guard by how well Misono was handling this. Talk about unexpected developments!

"Sheesh, Mis, how long were you hiding that figure?" You pout. It wasn't like you were jealous or anything!

"Proper diet and disciplined training!" Misono puffs up smugly, which also had the side effect of putting further emphasis on her chest.

"I'm surprised you can swing your sword around like that." You grumble.

Shit! Did she know? You glance at Vicky, who's gone white as a sheet. Guess she was caught off guard as well.

"Ah, well, to tell the truth..." You pause bashfully. Honestly, you did feel a bit bad keeping this a secret from Misono for so long. "Me and Vicky have been tinkering with an AI."

"Milly!" Vicky gasps.

"Hey, if we can't trust Mis, who can we?" You point out.

"An AI you say?" Misono blinks. "Where did you ever obtain one?"

"We salvaged it from the Wyvern we recovered." You explain. "One of the eggheads here helped fix it up as a favor to us."

"I see." Misono nods.

"B-but it's not dangerous!" Vicky insists. "Its functions are very limited!"

"Don't worry, I'm not about to go report it or anything." Misono shakes her head. "I don't understand much about AI, but if the two of you think it's safe, that's enough for me."

Jeez, Misono was almost seeming angelic right now. Now you felt really bad keeping her in the dark for so long.

"But, what about Bandit, then?" Misono asks.

"Ummmm." Vicky bites her lip.

"He doesn't know." You tell her.

"And will he?" Misono continues. "I'm just asking an honest question."

However, before you can answer, you hear footsteps as Bandit arrives.

"Good save!" Vicky whispers.

Oh crap, now that he mentions it, the suit did do a really, REALLY good job of showing off Bandit's big, broad torso showing off each and every individual muscle...

"It looks like a perfect fit!" You give a thumbs up.

"All right, if you say so." Bandit nods and mumbles. "Better not let Sofia see me in this."

"Also sir, I'd like to report that the IUN sent my F-2 over and took their plane back!" MIsono reports neatly and curtly.

"Good. One less thing to worry about." Bandit nods and turns to Vicky. "Are you doing okay?"

"O-o-of course, sir!" Vicky tremble. "J-just getting used to the s-suit!"

"I'm aware it may make you feel a little uncomfortable. You're not required to wear it." Bandit advises.

"It's fine! If Milly and Misono can handle it, I-I can too!" Vicky proclaims.

"All right." Bandit nods. "All right, I've just received word that the IUN will be airlifting the most sensitive Arsenal Bird components to the Lighthouse for proper disposal. Since we're here, they've requested we provide escort, so that's what we're doing."

"And what about Orpheus?" You wonder.

"Orpheus Squadron will also participate." Bandit confirms. "We'll have three planes to keep an eye on instead of one this time, so we'll all have to stay on our toes."

"I won't disappoint you this time, sir!" Misono promises.

"Y-yeah! Anything they throw up we can shoot down!" Vicky tries to pump herself up.

"I wouldn't expect less." Bandit nods. "If you want, we can go consult with Orpheus how to handle the escort."

Ugh, well, you weren't going to be able to hide it from them forever, so you may as well get it over with.

"All right, all right, let's go." You sigh.

The four of you then head over to the hangar where Angela and Alanna had their planes stored at. You could see that they were already suited up and ready to go. They both turn to see you approach, and they both show very different reactions.

Alanna practically turns beet red and starts sputtering like whistling kettle, while Angela simply bursts out in laughter.

"Oh my god! I heard they were giving out new prototype flightsuits but I never imagined they'd be like this!" Angela chortles. "It's really brave you to be the first adopters!"

"W-we're not going to be wearing anything like THAT, are we?!" Alanna turns to her partner.

"Hm, well, if there's a significant jump in performance, I'll consider it. We'll have to keep a close eye on the Ravens in the next fight!" Angela winks.

Alanna simply looks horrified.

"I'm looking forward to see how you look in it!" You wink as you make a slightly suggestive pose.

Alanna is taken aback at the sudden move, but is able to keep her composure, simply coughing and briefly breaking eye contact.

"Now now, you two can play together later!" Angela chortles, giving Alanna a hard but encouraging slap on the back. "So I hear the planes we gotta babysit are going to be taking off soon. You got a plane how to keep an eye on them?"

"I suppose we can do what we've done before." Bandit says simply. "We'll have one wing pair move on ahead to scout out possible threats while the rest of us stay close to the transports."

"Vicky, take care of the Thing, yeah? I got something to take care of!" You say, patting Vicky on the shoulder.

"R-right!" Vicky nods, immediately understanding what the Thing you meant was.

You head off back towards Dr. Schroeder's lab. However, as you arrive, you can already see workers taking out packing boxes. Dr. Schroeder himself then steps out.

"Ah, Milly, I see the G-suit fits you well." The scientist nods simply as he sees you approach. "I hope the rest of your squadron haven't had any issues?"

"Yeah, it's fine for them. Just gotta get used to it, though." You shrug and then glance at the movers. "So you're leaving too?"

"My assignment here was always temporary." Dr. Schroeder glances at you, his glasses glinting in the sunlight. "Now that the Arsenal Bird's most sensitive components have been accounted for, there's no longer any need for my services here."

"So where are you going from here, then?" You wonder.

"I'm afraid I'm not at liberty to say." Dr. Schroeder sighs. "Unfortunately, this assignment was only a side job. I'll have to return to my actual duties now."

"Incredibly so. But that's just how things are, sometimes." Dr. Schroeder nods solemnly. "Stay safe, Milly. If you run into any issues with the G-suits, just let Mead know. She should know how to adjust them."

"I guess I'll see you around then, Doc." You nod.

"Unlikely, but I wouldn't mind if we did." Dr. Schroeder nods. "By the way, how is Copro doing?"

"Oh, we renamed it Swallow." You explain to him.

"I see. A fan of the Red Swallow?" Dr. Schroeder raises an eyebrow.

"Well, that and I was one of his students." You point out.

"Ah, I see." Dr. Schroeder grins. "That's good to know. Good luck."

"See you around, Doc." You wave.

Unfortunately, you can't quite make out the logo as the helicopter starts up its rotors, kicking up a cloud of dust that obscures your view. You can only see Dr. Schroeder walking up to the helicopter, where a pair of guys in suits greet him and let him in. You also see that Georg guy follow him in.

However, you don't have a lot of time to wonder what's going on. You've still got a mission to take care of, after all! You quickly jog back to the hangar, where Mead is getting your planes ready for takeoff.

"Hey, looking good there!" Mead chuckles. "Looks like the doctor came through, huh?"

"Kinda interesting you happen to know a Belkan scientist." You grunt.

"Yeah, well, when you travel around like me, you meet a lot of interesting people." Mead winks. "Anyways, we'll be taking off soon. Just like before, I'm counting on you to keep me alive up there!"

"Yeah, sure thing." You nod.

You quickly hop into your Su-47 and taxi out. Already, you can see the other Ravens and Orpheus stacking up on the runway, with Orpheus up first. Behind you were the three cargo planes you were assigned to protect.

"H-hey, Red." Vicky's voice buzzes over a private channel. "Do you think this would be a good time to test Swallow? See if it can predict what will happen this mission?"

"Can it do that?" You blink.

"If it has enough data, yeah." Vicky replies. "It might not be reliable now, but the more data it can collect, the better!"

"Let's see if Swallow can analyze the behavior of these guys." You say. "Maybe it'll be able to glean something useful we can take advantage of."

"Got it!" Vicky nods. "Swallow will be keeping an eye on all our combat data. Just make sure you're engaging the enemy!"

"Oh, I'm pretty sure that's going to happen sooner rather than later."

"R-really?" Vicky gulps. "How do you know?"

"Just call it a gut feeling." You reply grimly. "Always happens when it's the most inconvenient."

"I suppose you have a point there..." Vicky concedes.

Soon enough, your little aerial convoy is airborne and heading east towards the Lighthouse. As previously decided, you and Misono are spearheading the convoy, while the others and Orpheus Squadron were staying behind to protect the transports proper.

However, as usual, things weren't going quite as planned. Unfortunately, the most direct route from Stonehenge to the Lighthouse brought you close to what was formerly Erusean territory. Territory that was now contested by various warlords and Erusea itself. That made the surrounding airspace rather... unpredictable, whether it be some rogue warlord looking to steal resources or trigger happy Erusean pilots trying to enforce their shattered nation's claims.

And unfortunately, the outlook wasn't looking good. Your trip just happened to coincide with a major Erusean offensive into its rebel territories, throwing everything in the surrounding area into chaos.

There was an alternate path to cut farther south and circle back around to the Lighthouse. However, that would take you over the coast and open ocean, where those mystery hostile forces were known to strike from.

It took a while, but Bandit made the call to redirect the convoy south to avoid any potential confrontations with Erusea. That last thing you needed was to create an international incident while carrying sensitive components salvaged from the Arsenal Bird.

So now, you and Misono were flying over Usea's rather familiar southern coast. Down below, your radar was picking up lots of contacts and transponder signals. With the end of the war, civilian shipping was starting to pick up again, but this meant that potential hostiles could hide among the civilian traffic.

If you could fly lower, you'd be able to better pick out anything that might be amiss from the mass of ships and small boats below. However, it would put you at a disadvantage if an aerial threat happened to pop up.

"I'll go low, you go high." You instruct. "Watch my back up there, Knives!"

"Understood, Red." Misono replies.

You then push your stick forward and, your Su-47 noses down, gradually losing altitude so you can get a better view of the sea and land below. Your HUD immediately begins picking out all of the transponders and contacts. coloring blue under the assumption that they were friendly or nonhostile.

Well, you'd have to be the judge of that...

Suddenly, your missile warning systems shriek as missiles and drones begin bursting out from under the water's surface. The civilian boats in the area begin to scatter in a panic, but others start to reveal hidden missile batteries and autocannons. For god's sake, it was like they were expecting you to come this way!

While you couldn't catch the ambush in time, your early warning systems gave you just enough time to react. You could drop countermeasures to give you the opening you need to gain altitude, where you could engage the drones on a more level playing field. Or, you could dive to the deck, where their missiles would be ineffective and starting picking off enemy boats.

Rather than just a regular dive, you pull the steepest, fastest dive you can manage, plunging your Su-47 straight down towards the water. Almost immediately, you could feel the blood rushing to your head from the negative G-forces, threatening a catastrophic redout, but your new G-suit immediately kicks into effect, shrinking and compressing itself far more efficiently than any regular flightsuit, pressing down on all of the important blood vessels in your upper body, constricting them and arresting the rampant flow of blood, preventing it from pooling in your head. It keeps you conscious and clearheaded enough to pull your dive just in time, kicking up a cloud of sea spray and mist.

The missiles don't see this move coming, and they fail to track you as the fly off aimlessly into empty air.

"Red! Are you all right?" Misono calls out with concern.

"I'm fine! Just keep those drones off me!" You grunt as you weave your plane through streams of autocannon tracers and missile trails. "Boss, we got a real big problem here!"

"Come back safe!" Vicky adds in.

"Yeah, don't get yourselves killed by small fry like this!" Alanna grunts.

"Haha, then its a pitched battle for us, then!" Misono laughs as her F-2 tangles with the launched drones above.

Currently, the only enemies you were seeing were the attack boats on the water and the drones above. Presumably there was that submarine carrier lurking beneath the waves, but you didn't have any real way to getting to it at this point.

Tracers continue to stream past your plane as you try to pick out your next target.

You had to remind yourself that destroying the enemy wasn't the objective here. It was making sure the convoy would be safe and getting home alive. To that end, you'd have to disengage with these attack boats and help Misono take out the drones. With those nuisances gone you'd be able to find a gap to disengage in.

You immediately pull up and hit afterburner to initiate a powerclimb, hopefully catching the attacks boats off guard enough that they won't immediately fire missiles after you.

Above, you could see that Misono was tangling with six MQ-101 drones. She was doing a good job of keeping their attention on her, but the sheer number of them meant she was having trouble picking them off, having to constantly juke and weave to avoid missile locks.

You could just plow right into that furball and hopefully confuse the drones, but you'd be coming right out of your climb with little energy to spend on maneuvers. You could get to combat altitude and level out to put yourself in a better position, assuming Misono could hold out that long.

And just like that, you find yourself above the main engagement, in perfect position to pounce on the drones, which were still preoccupied with Misono. Down below, the attack boats seemed to have stopped firing missiles, or at least were holding back. They probably didn't want to risk hitting their own drones.

Meanwhile, Misono was still effortlessly weaving through the mass of drones, having already picked off two in the close combat. That just left four more, three of which were still on her tail.

"Let's get the hell outta here, Knives!" You say in agreement, and both you and Misono hit afterburner, blasting away from the battle area at full speed.

On your radar, you could already see more drones and aircraft converging on the area. Looks like you both had gotten out in the nick of time. Thankfully, it doesn't seem like any of the drones seemed interested in chasing you further inland.

It takes a little while, but you do eventually catch up with the convoy. It looked like they hadn't run into any further complications.

Fortunately, the rest of the trip back to the Lighthouse was uneventful. The feared harassment from Erusean warplanes never materialized, though you did notice a number of Erusean tagged planes trailing your formation at the very edge of radar range.

By the time you landed at Selatapura Air Base, you didn't pay heed to much else and crashed into bed, utterly exhausted not just from the dogfight, but from the long, cross continental flight.

When you woke up the next morning, you quickly checked for any new orders and saw that Bandit had texted you that there were no pressing issues at the moment, but recommended you stay on base just in case.

After getting dressed, you decide to go look for Bandit. According his text, he was busy debriefing the higher ups over at the admin building. You quickly make your way over there, and catch him as he's exiting. Guess he's already done, apparently.

"Hey, Boss!" You wave as you approach him. "Did the debriefing go well?"

"Not exactly." Bandit sighs and shakes his head.

"What's the problem?" You raise an eyebrow as you fall in beside him.

"I voiced my concerns that whatever group is hounding us with these drones may have some way of accessing our plans, whether be through a spy or data interception." Bandit gives a rare scowl.

"Yeah, that ambush was WAY too convenient." You nod in agreement. "I'm guessing they didn't take you seriously?"

"Not seriously enough to admit to my face." Bandit shakes his head. "I don't like this. There's obviously a leak in the IUN which means every mission we take has a greater risk."

"You sure as hell but I would!" You grin. "Let's get going, then!"

It's simple enough to borrow a vehicle from the motor pool. Bandit offers to drive, so you take the opportunity to lounge in the passenger seat.

However, the drive from the airbase to the Lighthouse was still going to be a bit a trip, and this was a rare moment where you were alone with Bandit. Maybe this was a good opportunity to strike up a conversation about some matters he'd consider private.

"So, uh, Boss." You speak up a bit awkwardly, unsure of how to bring up this topic politely. "Um, you were in the air force during the Circum-Pacific War, right?"

"That's correct." Bandit nods. "I was still pretty young back then."

"So, er, what exactly did you do during the war?" You ask, trying to sound as innocent as possible.

Bandit is quiet for a bit, and then his eyes dart in your direction for a brief second.

"What brought up that question?" He asks, though he doesn't sound accusatory or angry. More curious, actually.

"Well, Uncle mentioned something about it." You answer truthfully. "Told me to ask you directly."

"So he told you that, huh?" Bandit takes a deep sigh. "All right, I suppose there's no point trying to dodge the matter, then."

Bandit is quiet for another few seconds, as if trying to figure out the best way to present what he's about to say.

"To tell the truth, I didn't do all that much in the war, since Belka remained officially neutral during the conflict." Bandit starts off. "But that all changed near the end of the war, when Belkan Intelligence started receiving information that the Gray Men were manipulating the conflict. Even worse, elements of both Osean and Yuktobanian Intelligence knew as well, which put Belka in an unenviable position."

"Yeah, Uncle told me Osea nearly declared war on Belka over it." You nod.

"And it was because of that possibility that Belkan Command agreed to cooperate with Osea and Yuktobania to put a stop to the Gray Men, to prove it wasn't involved." Bandit continues. "It was only for one mission, but it was the most important one. The raid on Grunder Industries."

Shit, you had heard about that penultimate, climactic battle. An allied force of both Osean and Yuktobanian planes and soldiers, led by the infamous Razgriz Squadron, staged an all out assault on Grunder's headquarters, neutralizing the Gray Men and the SOLG, their trump card. Bandit was involved in that?

"But there weren't any reports of Belka participating in that battle." You frown.

"Most of the press focused on the battle taking place over the facility itself, south of the Waldreich Mountains." Bandit replies. "What's not as well known was that Grunder had a tunnel running under the mountains where SOLG's control system was hidden. In order to destroy it, planes would need to fly in from both sides of the tunnel simultaneously."

"Whoa, wait a fucking minute." Your eyes widen. "You did that tunnel run with Razgriz?!"

"Unfortunately, no." Bandit shakes his head. "I was flying wing with an Osean pilot, Heartbreaker. I helped him break through Grunder's defenses on the north end of the tunnel, but my plane took a hit so I couldn't follow him in."

"That sounds awesome!" You gush. "I mean, flying in the same battle as Razgriz and helping them win it! Did you get to see them?"

"Only a brief glimpse." Bandit betrays a slight grin. "And they left just as quickly as they came, since they were technically in Belka airspace at the moment."

"How come you didn't say anything, then?" You blink. "Or anybody, for that matter?"

"Naturally, Command decided to keep Belka's involvement out of the limelight." Bandit explains. "It wouldn't be good PR to either foreign countries or Belkans if they found out Belka mobilized, so the whole matter was quietly wrapped up."

"That sounds like a whole load of bullshit!" You grunt indignantly. "So you got totally screwed out of war honors and shit!"

"It's not like I mind. It's not a mission I was particularly proud of anyways." Bandit sighs. "But, because of that, Command considers me trustworthy enough to take part in their more... sensitive schemes."

"So that's why they stuck us together?" You raise an eyebrow.

"I'm not sure if they were THAT farsighted, but regardless, it was my call to bring you into Raven Squadron." Bandit insists. "It looked like you had a lot of potential. I didn't want to see it go to waste."

"I'll prove it, by becoming the greatest Ace Belka's ever had!" You boast.

"Well I'm looking forward to that die." Bandit grins.

By that point, you had finally reached the Lighthouse. Bandit pulls up to the front of the main building, where you see Karla already waiting. However, you don't like the look on her face. Rather than being happy at seeing the both of you, her expression was a mixture of concern and anxiety.

That... didn't seem to be good.

"You two got here in the nick of time." Karla says grimly as she motions for both you and Bandit to follow her.

"What's happening, Karla?" You ask, genuinely curious and concerned.

"Nothing good." Karla grimaces. She stops in the lobby and points to a large screen TV that a number of refugees had gathered around.

On the screen, you could see a tv reporter standing in front of a large building that seemed to be besieged by an army of protestors.

"As negotiations between the Conservatives and Radicals begin to enter the closing stages, anti-Belkan sentiment has begun to rise sharply!" The reporter has to shout over loud voices and chants of the protestors. "Over the past view days, anti-Belkan riots have rocked cities all over Erusea, and the majority of Erusea's Belkan population has sought shelter in the Belkan Embassy in Farbanti!"

The camera then pans up to show a proper view of the building behind the reporter, and sure enough, it was the Belkan Embassy in Farbanti, now looking as if it were under siege.

"Tensions between Erusea and Belkan are now at an all time high, as Belka claims Erusea is taking little to no action to protect its citizens, while the newly organized Erusean government claims it cannot be blamed for the actions of rogue protestors..."

Karla then motions for the both of you to follow her again, into a closed conference room where it's just the three of you.

"What the hell is going on?" You seethe.

"I'd like to know, too." Bandit nods gravely.

"It looks like Erusea finally got its shit together and formed a new, permanent government. The Erusean Directorate." Karla says grimly as she takes a seat. "Unfortunately, it looks like the core issue that the Erusean Conservatives and Radicals could agree on was to blame Belkan agents for manipulating them into declaring war on Osea."

"That's a bunch of bullshit!" You blurt.

"It is, but they're not completely wrong, unfortunately." Karla sighs. "But regardless, they're turning innocent Belkans into scapegoats to absolve themselves of any fault. And as we all know, Belkans always make convenient scapegoats."

"And what does this have to do with us?" Bandit narrows his eyes.

"Command just got into contact with me and essentially said they do not wish to see a repeat of the Tyler island Massacre." Karla narrows her eyes.

You feel your stomach churn. You remember hearing about and seeing pictures of the Tyler Island Massacre, where the island's entire Belkan population was slaughtered by Erusean soldiers. Both Osea and Belka claimed Erusea committed war crimes, but Erusea brushed the accusations off saying it was rogue soldiers acting without direction during the confusion of the communications blackout. The thought of it just made your blood boil.

"To that end, Command is organizing a military relief operation to evacuate the Belkan Embassy and all of the refugees sheltering within it." Karla continues. "Erusea cannot be counted on to provide proper protection, so Belka will have to do it itself."

"What if Erusea resists?" Bandit asks.

"That embassy is considered Belkan territory. I think you know what that means." Karla replies. "Command has made it clear the facility will be evacuated with not a single innocent Belkan lost."

"It can't be just us going." You frown.

"Command is sending a proper relief force. Your squadron will be linking up with them prior to the operation." Karla further explains. "However, you may have to leave behind your non-Belkan squadmates. I don't think their host nations would like to see them get involved in Belkan politics like this."

"We should ask them at the very least!" You grunt.

"And we all know they're going to say yes." Karla shakes her head with a smile. "But if they want to come, Command won't stop them. This operation will need all the pilots it can get."

"When's the operation happening?" Bandit asks.

"As soon as they can round up the forces necessary." Karla says grimly. "Ideally, your squadron leaves now to link up with the other units. But, you can delay your departure to tonight at the very latest, if you have anything else you need to do."

"Hey, can't I see Ellisa really fast before we go?" You wonder.

"Heh, well, I suppose that's fine." Karla finally shows a smile. "I'm sure she's dying to see you again."

"She better!" You boast as you take your exit.

However, you almost trip over the girl in question as you exit the room. Had she been eavesdropping on all of you?

"Ellisa! What the heck are you doing, you little twerp?" You chuckle as you pick her up.

"I wanted to see what got Mommy all upset!" Ellisa pouts. "She's been really grouchy all day today!"

"Uh, well, it's just that we gotta go help some people, and your mom is just very worried about them." You explain to Ellisa s you carry her away from the conference room.

"Really?" Ellisa glances at you. "Is she gonna fly a jet fighter again?"

"Hah, I wish." You snort. "Nah, it's gonna have to be up to me this time! Isn't that cool?"

Ellisa just narrows her eyes.

"Mommy's still cooler." She says simply.

Oof. You feel your heart take a hit at those words.

"That's cruel, Ellisa." You groan.

"It's the truth!" The little brat counters.

And so you and Ellisa get into a heated argument over whether you or Karla was the better pilot at this point. It didn't really serve much purpose or achieve anything, but it did help get your mind off the upcoming mission, even if only for a little while. You had the feeling some serious shit was going to go down...

"Boss, are you sure this is the right place?" You wonder openly. "Doesn't seem like there's anyone here."

You and the rest of Raven Squadron had taken off from Selatapura as soon as it was feasible. Even though Bandit warned both Vicky and Misono about the possible political ramifications of them participating in a purely Belkan operation, they both readily agreed to help anyways. After all, the pointed out you were all still officially a squadron, and neither of them liked the prospect of sitting out a mission while innocent lives were at stake.

You were actually really touched both of them would go out of their way to help you and Bandit out on this. They were really sticking their necks out for the both of you.

However, this was assuming if the main Belkan relief force was actually going to show up.

"They might be behind schedule." Bandit reasons. "We'll give them a few more minutes."

"Whatever you say, Boss." You sigh as you lean back in your seat.

"Don't worry! I'm sure it's because it's really hard to organize such a big effort in such a short time!" Vicky tries to reassure you.

"Especially if they lack the experience." Misono points out.

"Hey, they got plenty of spirit to make up for it!" You insist, remembering the eager pilots of the reformed Grun Squadron.

Suddenly, your radar starts showing approaching contacts. You glance at the screen and see the IFF tags start winking on.

GRUN

INDIGO

SCHNEE

Goddamn, the bigwigs were committing three entire squadrons to this? Not only that, there was a small naval flotilla following in their wake, consisting of a few destroyers, frigates, and amphibious assault ships. No doubt the vessels intended to transport the refugees to safety.

"Raven Squadron, good to see you!" You hear Grun Lead say happily over the radio. "Sorry we're late!"

"No problem, we're still within the timetable." Bandit replies simply. "Has Command issued any additional orders?"

"Same thing as before. We proceed to Farbanti and commence the evacuation. We're to strictly be a show of force to deter Erusea from interfering with the evacuation process."

"Understood." Bandit replies.

"So where's Raven Squadron going to be?" Grun Lead continues. "Indigo will be performing close air support for the evacuation helos, Grun will protect the fleet, and Schnee will handle CAP. We're not expecting the Eruseans to start any armed resistance, but you never know..."

"Hey, hey, so you are you all knights like the last Indigo Team?" You ask, unable to quite hide your glee.

"Haha, of course!" Indigo Lead says happily. "The spirit of Belka's chivalry lives on through us!"

Bad. Ass.

"All right, that's enough small talk." Bandit cuts in. "Indigo Lead, can we trust you with the ground targets?"

"You can count on us, as long as you keep watch on the skies!" Indigo Lead boasts proudly.

"Attention all Belkan forces, this is Admiral Lutjens." You hear a loud, regal voice boom over the radio. "I will be taking overall command of this evacuation operation. You should all know your operational objectives at this point, so there is no point in repeating them. However, I must stress that we have rules of engagement in place. We are not here to start a fight with Erusea, so under no circumstances are you allowed to shoot first."

You just grumble to yourself and stay silent. As counter intuitive as it sounded, everybody realized the political fallout if Belka were to fire first on Erusean soil. Not to mention, there was little doubt there was a huge media presence in Farbanti right now as well. While Belka could play that to its advantage to show off its military might, it also meant it had to play extremely carefully.

"We will be entering Erusean waters in several minutes." Admiral Lutjens continues. "All aircraft, proceed to your objectives."

"That's our cue!" Indigo Lead quips as her flight of Gripens boosts forward.

"So cool..." You hear Vicky mumble. You remember that she was flying a Gripen herself.

"All right, let's fall in behind them." Bandit instructs as his F-15 increases speed. Grun stays behind with the fleet while Schnee trails at a higher altitude in their F-14s.

Soon enough, though, you could see a squadron of Erusean F-15s ready to meet you.

"Belkan fighters, you are entering Erusean airspace." You hear their flight lead growl. "Turn back or we will fire."

"We're here on official diplomatic business." Indigo verbally fires back. "Firing on us means declaring war on Belka. Is that something you really want?"

There's no answer, but the F-15s continue to hold position, staying well within visual range.

"Heh, the dogs that bark the loudest always have the smallest teeth." Indigo Lead chuckles on the Belkan frequency.

Your two squadrons continue on to Farbanti, and the first thing you see is the Flooded District, an entire knot of ruined skyscrapers partially sunken into the sea. A leftover ruin from the Ulysses asteroid impact.

"I heard in the Lighthouse War they hid a lot of AA batteries in the Flood District." Misono mumbles. "It would be the perfect area to ambush low flying aircraft."

"We'll just have to deal with it if that's the case." Bandit grunts.

You decide to just keep on flying into Farbanti proper. You didn't have time to waste sightseeing.

"I got visual on the Embassy." Indigo Lead reports. "Damn, it doesn't look pretty."

Sure enough, up ahead you could make out the grey office building that served as the Belkan Embassy. Even from this height and distance, you could make out the crowds of people surrounding the compound, kept at bay only by the concrete perimeter wall. From what you could tell, there weren't even any police on the ground. Were the Eruseans really going to just throw your people to the wolves?

"And those helicopters are going to be a real problem" Indigo Lead continues.

Up above the Embassy was a fleet of civilian helicopters, no doubt carrying news crews eager for a scoop. You could understand Indigo's frustration. If something were to happen on the ground, those helicopters were like a minefield Indigo would have to navigate through if they were to provide any sort of air support.

"Shouldn't Erusea have cleared them from the airspace?" Vicky wonders.

"I guess they don't feel like it." Bandit grunts. "Certainly makes our job harder."

"Anyways, we should probably find a way to clear them outta the airspace." You suggest.

"As long as you don't shoot them." Bandit remarks.

"Will they really listen to just a verbal warning?" Vicky wonders. "I mean, these ARE reporters we're dealing with, after all..."

"Well, they won't listen to me, that's for sure." Indigo Lead groans. "They keep blowing off any attempts to contact them!"

"Perhaps a show of force?" Misono suggests.

"Ugh, fine, I'll try talking to them." You sigh as you key your radio to the media frequencies.

"-and I can't believe this! There are Belkan warplanes over Farbanti! While the Belkan government has claimed they are there to oversee the evacuation of the Belkan Embassy, Erusea has been lodging diplomatic complaints that this is a violation of their sovereignty-"

Ah, looks like they were still spinning things against the Belkan side.

So how were you going to convince these vultures to clear out?

"Hey hey, all you reporters down there, this is the Red Tail here!" You say sweetly over the radio. "What's it gonna take for you all to clear the airspace? We've got an evacuation to cover, after all!"

Suddenly, the comms are flooded with traffic among the reporters.

"Red Tail? What does that sounds familiar..."

"Isn't that the hero plane with the IUN?"

"Red Tail is a Belkan?"

"I thought everybody knew that!"

"That's an Su-47! Did she upgrade her plane?!"

Well, you certainly got their attention. Now to reel them in. There was one thing you knew reporters couldn't resist, and that was getting the perfect photo op.

"How about a little trade, then?" You continue, circling high above the embassy. "I'll give you guys one pass, low and slow, right over the Embassy, and you can take all the pictures you want! That should be enough to get you all your scoops, right?"

There's brief silence over the comms.

"Of course!"

"We'll put it on every newspaper!"

"Get HQ on the line! We need to get this on the air as soon as we capture it!"

"Haha, I'm glad I brought the good camera today!"

Heh, looks like it worked like a charm.

"How did you do that?" Indigo Lead gasps.

"Well, vultures are always pretty predictable." You chuckle.

"You just wanted the attention, didn't you." Bandit sighs.

"That sounds like Red all right." Vicky sighs in agreement.

However, you're already dropping altitude, and perform a low and slow pass over the Embassy, giving the reporters the best photo op they could hope for. After a few seconds, you pull up and away, and the helicopters begin dispersing, opening up the airspace over the Embassy.

"Raven Squadron, good job clearing the airspace." A new voice buzzes. "This is Siegfried 1-1. We're en route to the Embassy now."

You glance at your radar and see four CH-47 heavy transport helicopters, escorted by four Apache gunships. Looks like they were coming in fast and hot.

"I don't like flying low over this crowd." One of the helo pilots groans. "What if they're hiding a MANPADS in there or something?"

"Quit overthinking things, Siegfried 1-2. That's why we've got flares." Siegfried 1-1 replies.

"Shouldn't there be a way to suppress the crowd without harming them?" Vicky wonders.

"Well, a low speed mach pass could create a sonic boom that could startle them..." Misono suggests. Of course she'd come up with something like that.

You catch sight of a flight of four Erusean F-4s vectoring in towards the Embassy. What was even more strange was these birds were flying at low altitude, weaving through skyscrapers as if to try to avoid visual contact. That was.... very concerning.

"Bandit, I got four Erusean birds coming from the north. F-4s. They're making a beeline straight to the Embassy." You call out.

"What? Wait, I see them" Bandit grunts. "That's suspicious."

"Wait a minute..." You frown as you narrow your eyes, keeping a closer eye F-4s. "Fuck! They're drones! I'm sure of it!"

"But they have Erusean IFF!" Vicky points out. "I thought the Eruseans banned combat drones!"

"I'm telling you, these are drones! I remember how they fly!" You scowl.

"Then let's intercept them!" Misono cries.

"Hold it! They're still broadcasting Erusean IFFs! If we fire, it's an act of war!" Lutjens barks.

"HEY! WHOEVER THE FUCK IS RUNNING AIR OPS FOR YOU ERUSEANS., GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER." You bark over open comms. "I got four F-4s with Erusean IFF making a run on the Embassy! You tell them to back off or we're shooting them fuck down!"

"But we can't shoot!" Vicky reminds on the squadron frequency.

"They don't know that!" You point out.

"All F-4 squadrons, check in!" You hear what you presume to be the Erusean ATC call in.

"Forager checking in."

"Keeper checking in."

"Heimdall checking in."

"Something's not right, I'm reading a fourth squadron." The Erusean ATC mumbles. "Wait a minute, Glamrock is stationed in Anchorhead! All squadrons! Glamrock is not Erusean! I repeat, Glamrock is NOT Erusean! Kill Glamrock!"

Suddenly, the IFF on the four approaching F-4s wink off, now tagged as UNKNOWN.

Almost immediately, the squadron of Erusean F-15s that had been shadowing you dive down to intercept the uninvited guests.

As much as you wanted to swoop in and get the kill, you decide to hold back and watch as the F-15s swiftly mop up the drones.

"You won't believe this, but the Erusean air force have fired on their planes!" You hear a reporter cry over the airwaves. "Panic has gripped the streets as protestors are fleeing in all directions!"

"This is Erusean Air Control to all planes, be advised, drones camouflaged as manned planes with spoofed IFF have infiltrated the airspace! Look for any suspicious movements and verify squadron IDs!"

Great, things were starting to get REALLY messy now.

Thankfully, it looked like Siegfried had finally reached the Embassy, the and the helicopters were touching down in the open courtyard, which was designed for this very purpose.

"This is Siegfried 1-1, we're loading evacuees! Keep us covered!"

"We read you, Siegfried 1-1, we've got your back!" Indigo Lead assures them.

"Better hurry it up, the crowd outside is starting to get really agitated!" An Embassy guard warns.

Sure enough, it looks like while most of the protestors had fled or dispersed at the first sign of fighting, there still was a strong core that remained at the Embassy, who were now throwing all manner of items at the perimeter wall and at the guards posted at the top of it. Instead of being scared, they were only getting more incensed! The Apaches escorting Siegfried hover menacingly over the courtyard, their weapons at the ready. Looks like things could get real ugly real fast.

Suddenly, your radar picks up Indigo's IFF signals... except they were nowhere near the Embassy. Actually, it looked like they were lining up for a strafing run on the protestors outside the Embassy!

So these bastards had drone fakes of Erusean AND Belkan squadrons! What the hell?!?

Well, since these technically weren't Erusean planes, you were theoretically free to fire on them. Or maybe it was better to sit back and let the Eruseans get their hands dirty?

Your cannon opens fire, but the drones are quick and manage to dodge out of the way of your initial burst. Thankfully, though, the rest of your squadron lobs missiles and cannon fire of their own, completely wiping out the flight of impostor craft.

"Oh my god! Now the Belkan aircraft are shooting at each other!" You hear another reporter cry.

"There are unconfirmed reports from sources within the Erusean military that drones disguised as Erusean and Belkan military aircraft have infiltrated Farbanti airspace!"

"The skies and the streets are in total chaos! The Erusean police and national guard have finally begun mobilizing to disperse the crowds!"

Jeez, the airwaves were going completely crazy right now. Maybe it was better to keep your focus on the mission.

"This is Siegrfried 1-1! All evacuees have been loaded and we're taking off!"

Sure enough, you see the Belkan flag flying over the Embassy being hastily lowered by the last remaining Embassy guards before folding it up and dashing for the nearest waiting helicopter. The helicopters of Siegfried then begin lifting off into the air.

"All right! We can finally get the hell out of this place!" Siegfried 1-4 whoops.

"We're not out of the woods yet!" Siegfried 1-1 chastises his fellow pilot. "Who knows what other surprises they might have waiting for us!"

That was true. You've only completed the first half of our mission. Now you had to make sure the evacuees made it back to the fleet safely.

As the smoke and flames of war rose from Farbanti yet again, the bay seemed so far away. It was clear that someone wanted to try and instigate a conflict between Belka and Erusea. What other dirty tricks did they have up their sleeve to try and make that a reality...?
