Pagus University.

A name known by any person one might ask. A college that prides itself in many areas, but most notably, magic. Magic was born in this place, and changed the world forever, and those who graduate this school end up forever a part of the elite. It’s tough to make it in, only the best of the generation can even get a letter back.

You put in an application just for fun, the summer of your junior year in high school... But in the winter of your senior year, you received a letter back. Upon opening, you immediately dropped all notions of attending other schools regardless if had already accepted you. And what’s better? You had been selected out of hundreds to go to the school for free... Your parents wouldn’t pay a dime, and you would get to hone your magical skills to a mirror shine...

And so, when summer ended... You were sent to Pagus, the small Italian town acting as the secluded campus... Upon getting off the plane, you had to wonder why you had been chosen as part of this special class...

But who even are you?

Your name is Perseus Meigma. You’ve recently come of age, as fitting of a college student. You, like many, didn’t enjoy school’s enforcement of classes that posed no assistance to your dreams.

But what dream?

Well. Ever since you were a lad, you’ve had extremely keen sense. At first, it was passed off as coincidence, until you could vividly describe the structures of plants, animals, and even humans, down to the minute detail. Of course, you cannot see that which is truly hidden, but your appraisal can certainly lead you there! This is a rare magic ability, and likely part of the reason for Pagus accepting you into their halls... Thus, you’re interested in the growing field of “Magi-Sci.” Magi-Sci (or MS) is the study and development of magic, for the understanding, knowledge, and use of those who may not possess the potent blood necessary for such abilities.

As for what you’re studying at Pagus? Well, due to your appraisal’s knack for knowing the best ingredients, you’ve always been something of a self taught alchemist, and a great one at that. You can brew and craft all manner of supplements for enhancing the body.

Despite your above average talents, your appearance doesn’t quite spell it out. You’re of an average height, 5’9. You have short, but well kept hair. Alchemy helps you create shampoo from natural ingredients, so of course your hair is alright. Finally, your eyes are a deep green. A slight glow in the eyes is the defining characteristic of a magician in the world, after all.

Your driver is a fine dressed woman with white hair, the campus has their own drivers for students. “To keep outsiders from sneaking in as easily.” She says. In about two hours time, she stops the car, in seemingly the middle of nowhere. He hands you a keyring. “The small one is for your dorm room. The big one... It’s for the barrier. This is as far as I go.”

You look to your left. There seems to be a purple sign, with a depiction of a stereotypical wizard’s hat with the engraved letters PGU. A stop sign for the drivers no doubt...

You thank the woman and hop out, walking another mile and a half before it comes into view. A quaint countryside town to anyone out of the loop, but to you, you knew. This was a prestigious college. No, THE prestigious college... But before you walk in, you’re stopped by an invisible barrier shoving you flat onto your back. Some students passing by chuckle, as you watch them pass right through the barrier using large keys like the one that woman gave you... You do as they do, and are granted access.

You find your dorm room, a single person room with a bed, desk, window, and magitek lanterns for lighting. It’s on the 2nd floor of a dorm block specifically for the small pool of honors students...

As you finish unpacking, you begin getting ready to hit the hay...

But suddenly...

A card is slid through the small hole in the bottom of your door. You walk over and pick it up.

In true handwriting, which you would not expect from a wealthy school like this, rather than printed text:

“To the ultimate magical students... To those who have been in this school for a year or more, we thank you for continuing to hone your crafts in the birthplace of magic. For those new here, we thank YOU for accepting this daunting challenge! Whether a newcomer, or a mainstay, things are going to be very different around here! So be sure to come to HONORS STUDENT ULTIMATE INITIATION, and learn how we’re gonna be shaking things up! See you there!

PS: It’s at the Central Student Union’s auditorium theater, at 7:00 PM sharp!

You check your watch. Crap! That’s half an hour from now... But you’re tired from traveling...

You suppose all the other honors students are there too, though...

What should you do?

You hightail your way to the Central Student Union building. It’s at the heart of the campus, and easily the tallest building here. Compared to the other facilities, this is a damn tower.

But that makes sense. This tower houses a large mana shard, which provides energy to much of Europe. The high council of magic guards it with their lives...

You file into the auditorium, with just two minutes to spare... Huffing and puffing, some of the students smile and wave at you, or give you an awkward look, before going back to talking... The honors class is a very small pool. There can’t be more than 16 people in it.

As you catch your breath, sitting toward the back, alone for now, a loud set of footsteps grips the attention of you and the others. A cloaked figure is walking out onto the stage. You can hear some whispers in front of you.

(“Who’s that...?”)

(“Probably Headmaster Merlin... I couldn’t think of anyone else who would give a special presentation to honors students.”)

You’ve heard of Merlin, the most powerful magician the world round. But perhaps the most secretive as well... In what few statements he makes publicly, he states many times about abstaining from using his potent magical power to help the many world nations, citing it could create unfair advantage, strife, and even deadly wars... They sure are controversial statements, especially to those skeptical of the ethics of magic.

It’s no wonder this school is kept under wraps. Terror groups are out there, seeking to destroy mana crystals.

The supposed headmaster... Is kind of short. Even in his cloak, it’s clear that Merlin is walking rather clumsily, and he can’t reach the microphone normally... He stands on his tiptoes and lowers it accordingly.

“Good evening! I apologize deeply for the short notice. But it’s good to see that all of you are here, and not a single one late!” Merlin exclaims, his voice is excitable but... How does he know this is all of you? Perhaps he memorized the number of students from a roll sheet? “Speaking of all of you... Since you’ll be exclusively living together, I want each and everyone to introduce themselves, and say a little bit about why they’re here! Don’t be shy, and don’t be afraid to flex that magical muscle if you believe you’re the best here!”

Everyone looks at eachother. Then, starting from the front row going down to the left, each student introduces themselves...

A short looking student stands from his seat slowly, peering around, he looks nervous... “I’m... Uh, Jacuzzi, Jacuzzi E-Eden...” He stammers a little. “You can call me, J-Jac, if you want!” He’s silent for a bit, and just before people think he’s done talking... “I’m from Texas... And I-I’m an expert in explosive magic. Er- expert is an overstatement I guess... I wouldn’t be here if I was an expert. It’s a dangerous magic type but... I’m quite resilient, so I’m safe around it.” He smiles a bit, sweetly, before nodding. “T-thank you for having me here...” He sits down, looking away. Clearly a bit embarrassed.

The headmaster chuckles a little. “Huhuhu... You’re a real character! I’d expect an explosive magics Student to be a lot more aggressive... Or dead by this point!” Another laugh. Jacuzzi seems a little down at the comments. What was the headmaster doing...? “Next!” He yells.

Logged. Gonna have to do a bit of tweaking to balance the power of possession for the purposes of the game. But he will still be quite the juggernaut with it...
>>
>>3959364
A taller but slightly wide guy stands. Turning directly to everyone else, certainly more confidence than Jacuzzi had. “Name’s Randy.” He states plainly. “If any of you are starting a band, need a drummer, call me.” He sits down.

The headmaster shakes his head, the head nobody can see behind the thick hood... “Stand back up, Mr Taylor!” He shouts. “You didn’t explain what you do magic-wise!”

Randy stands with a sigh and a bit of a chuckle. “Knowing my last name off the top of your head like that, fine, fine...” He takes a deep breath. “The magic I got is possession.” A couple of whispers could be heard after his blunt statement.

(“Isn’t that a banned art?”)

(“The ban was lifted a few years ago, possession bloods undergo a surgery at birth, hindering their ability to freely control. Now they need consent.”)

(“Even still... I’d never consent to someone like that controlling my body...!”)

Randy sits down, seemingly uncaring at the glares he gets...

“Okay, next!” Shouts the headmaster.
>>

I imagine that he would be more likely to use it for his own amusement or out of curiosity rather than to overpower others anyway. Perhaps a time limit or drawbacks that could puts his soul at various degrees of risk depending on the situation.

A girl dressed in black stands tall and confident. “My name is Brenna Crane... I’m honored to have been selected.” She gives a small smile, but keeps that air of being the wisest in the room, other than the Headmaster of course. “I study Hex magics, they’re becoming quite practical for widespread use, and as more than just a weapon... I guess if I had anything to say about myself...” She strains for the words a bit, looking down to the white-clad girl sitting right next to her. “Its a relief I get to have family while all the way out here...” She sits back down.

The headmaster laughs again. “Family does matter, after all! Your sister’s next up, yeah? Let’s see!”

“I never told you-“

Before Brenna could finish the thought, the girl in white stood, a little shorter than Brenna, and her expression was a bit more monotone...

“Erm... Hello all...” She says, with a small wave of her dainty hand. “My name is Iona, Iona Crane... I’m a first year here, my sister is a second year, but this is the first time we’ve both been picked for an honor’s program.” She nods, perking up slightly. “I really enjoy... Nature...” She pauses again, looking down to her feet this time. A clearly shy girl at heart. “My ability, is to speak with divine spirits, and commune with them to enhance the world around.” She gives a tiny bow and quickly sits back down.

You can see Brenna just barely place her hand in her sister’s, as if to console her somehow...

“What a duo! Hexes and spirits and gods, oh my! Ahaha!” The headmaster beams. “Who’s next???”

The tallest guy in class stands. Leering at a few who have already introduced themselves. “Alright, I’m Eric Mercer. 3rd year, boxing team captain... I’m surprised I wasn’t an honor student last year, but here I am now!” He gives a charismatic grin. “As for what I can do...” He smirks, summoning a bag of popcorn from thin air. “Summoning magic. Pretty cool, huh?” He nods to himself. “So let’s get on with this year, okay? Thanks Merlin!”

(“That’s not my name...”) You think you hear the headmaster whisper as Eric sits down. “Well now, just a few to go! I hope you’re remembering these people’s naaaaames!”

The next student to stand is an average height, glasses clad upperclassman. “My name is Sigurd Von Vici.” He says with a sense of gusto. As if everyone should know his name by heart... “Only the top performing student in honors programs, three years in a row, and for my final year I intend to repeat that streak!” He laughs. “I’m an ice elemental, and the best in my field.” He says, suddenly , the air around him glows with condensation, and in a quick snap, an ice sculpture of the great magician, Merlin, was created. He places it on the stage. “You’re welcome, it’s great to finally see you in person for the first time~”

You get the sense that Sigurd is kind of a dick in private.

The headmaster looks down. “What am I supposed to do with this...?” And then the cloaked presenter kicks the sculpture into a wall, shattering it. “Any one eeeeeeelse I’m forgetting?”

“How rude!” The headmaster shouts at the next student, a younger looking boy with a Gameboy in his hands. “You should be listening to the names of your peers!”

The blue-haired boy looks up and around. “Oh... We started...?” Sigurd laughs, but the boy doesn’t react. “Well... Sup’, I’m Gabriel Golden. Call me GG.” He grins, going back to his game for a moment. Sigurd, who is sitting next to him, tries to snatch the handheld console, but then GG teleports one seat down, pulling his hood over his head and concentrating on his game.

“Teleportation... Very clever! Very rare!” The headmaster claps. “Hm... We’re down to the wire I think! (Hard to see in this stupid cloak...)”

“Alrighty, second to last, but surely not least!” The headmaster points to the student sitting directly in front of you. She quickly bounces out of her seat.

“Hey, hey there! I’m Greta, Greta Von Bludhardt!” She gives a slight giggle.

(“Weird... I didn’t even notice her until now!”) Someone further down whispers, you think it was that Italian girl, Bergamo her last name was?

“Blood absolutely fascinates me... So I’ve devoted my magic to it, rightfully so! Hemokinesis is the best bloodform, so cool!” She doesn’t bother explaining it though? “Let’s give this year our all, okay?” She laughs, taking her seat with the same kind of bounce she rose from it with.

“And that only leaves... You!” The headmaster says. Despite his cloak, you can feel his eyes bearing into you, your soul...

“So NOW we’re all here...” The headmaster says, turning around. “So many top of the line abilities...! But you’re all already so high in your fields... You’re all tired of doing papers and classes and the like, yes? How about this year... This year, we test your magic!”

Sigurd chuckles. “Easy. I’ll trump the rest on any ability test!”

“Don’t be so sure, hotshot.” Randy retorts from across the row.

“Zip it, fatass...” Sigurd snorts.

“We don’t gotta be so competitive!” Greta exclaims. “Hey Merlin, what’s the test?”

Everyone watches with bated breath. The headmaster just... Stands there...

“What kind of joke is this...?” Brenna asks quietly.

“Where the hell is Headmaster Merlin!?” Eric stands from his seat, fists already primed for some sort of action.

“Merlin...?” The bear feigns ignorance. “I don’t know a Merlin! Sounds old! Sounds smelly! Who I do know... Is me! Monokuma!”

“I’ll be the NEW headmaster for this school year! And the next, and the next, and the one after that, until you all graduate!” Monokuma says, much louder now.

What is this...? You almost want to laugh, but the bear... It’s sinister.

“Over the years, school curriculums have become really quite lacking when it comes to actually testing the skills one really needs to survive in the real world. So what better way to test those skills than with the greatest magic students of the generation?” The bear puts a foot forward, in a commanding position. “Forget papers, textbooks, studying... All you’ll need to graduate is your magic, your wits...” The bear takes a moment to laugh. “Your hopes, and your despair!”

A few people in the room, Sigurd, and GG who has finally looked up from his game longer than a minute at this point, are laughing. But the rest of you are confused or stunned. No... Schoolwork? In a school? A real test? What did this entail?

“So what will be your test, then? And what’s the average time to beat?” Cindy asks with a sort of determination everyone else seems to inexplicably lack...

The bear perks up. “It’ll just be a game... No, THE game! The killing game. And you’re all gonna play! By my rules!”

Killing game?

Oh. That sounds bad.

You glance at your phone for a second and notice something off...

There’s no more cell signal...

You rummage your pockets some more.

Your dorm key is here...

Where’s the barrier key? You know you brought it with you... You had to have!

“And these rules...? What are they?” You feel a pit in your stomach.

Why did they accept you into this school? Was it luck? You knew better magicians and alchemists in high school that would kill for this position...

Kill... For this position...

“There’s two ways to graduation! Two paths!” Monokuma places a hand on his belly, pulling up a stool to sit on while he talks. “There will be no tuition payments, you’re paying with your lives now! To graduate is simple... Just die!”

An audience gasp.

“Or...” Monokuma’s voice became a bit more grim. “Kill one of your classmates, someone in this very room, and get away with it! It’s easy as pie! If they can’t pin you for the crime in a battle royals clsss trial, they all die, and you, lucky killer, get to walk free! But if you’re caught... I will personally punish you! And the rest will keep playing the game! Until there’s one winner... One graduate!”

“Shut the hell up with this bullshit!” Eric shouts. “You’re a stuffed bear. We don’t have to take orders from you, or whoever is pulling this stupid prank!”

“There’s no pranks here! No sir!” Monokuma confirms. “And you can’t leave, either!”

The class begins to talk amongst themselves. GG breaks the silence.

“A game...? Well. I think I just won this one!” And at that moment, the boy disappears in a flash...

Everyone is silent, was it really as simple as walking out of the door?

Then... A metallic hum could be heard.

The roof caved in, a few students move out of the way of the falling ceiling piece, as two levitating Monokuma lookalikes wearing wizard caps floated in, carrying in their magical clutches, GG. They unceremoniously dumped him on the floor. Iona checks for injuries, stepping back to Brenna when she finds none.

“Not even teleporting to the other side of Europe can get you out of your new school year! No refunds!” Monokuma spat.

GG coughed. “That’s not fair... This isn’t a fair game. Isn’t there any way we can win with all of us working together?”

Monokuma let out a bellowing laugh. “Well, you could abstain from killing! And stay in this empty school! Forever... and ever... and ever! Ahahahhaha!”

Everyone looked to GG.

“I went back home... To London... Streets were empty... It felt... Dead...” He mumbles. “Damn Bear...”

You analyze everyone... You know the ability isn’t quite mind reading, but it’s the best you’ll get.

Randy is sitting, slack jawed, recovering from his previous laughter. His body is sweating, though none but you can see it.

Jacuzzi also looks in a state of disbelief. Though, he’s trying to look calm, his hands are shaking in his uniform pockets.

Brenna looks positively pissed at Monokuma. Plotting hexes perhaps. She keeps a hand on Iona’s shoulder, her grip is vice-tight...

Eric is still looking to square up with the bear, he’s summoned boxing gloves. You hope he doesn’t try anything without knowing the full rules of what’s happening...

GG is still getting up from being carried at high speed across the continent. His body is cold. Seeing the outside world must’ve made him slightly mortified...

Greta still wears a smile on her face. But on the inside she’s heating up. This is... exciting to her? You thought she had disappeared again, strange...

And lastly, Cindy was by the door. Ready to move.

At least nobody had murder on their minds yet!

Although... gears had to be turning in Sigurd’s head. He was eyeing each and every student. Plotting to kill? Or plotting to defend?

Wait... Why are you thinking like this!? This isn’t right. Nobody in this room is a killer. This isn’t real.

This isn’t real.

THIS IS NOT REAL.

You open your eyes.

The hole in the ceiling remains, and the bear is still laughing at you.

This is real...

(Continued.)

“So, that’s the game... It’s kill or be killed! Your magic should prove useful in killing, and finding killers! Or perhaps... Your hope will shine through? Nobody will die? The game will NEVER END? Upupupu~!!! Doubtful! Now let’s make this killing school semester one to remember forever!”

The bear seemingly summoned hundreds more of those lookalikes, the ones that look like wizards. Are they familiars? It doesn’t matter. They surround Monokuma, and carry him out of the hole in the ceiling, as everyone just watches in stark silence.

You check your watch. It’s now 7:45 PM... The night has begun. But... Has a game really begun? You still kind of can’t believe it.

But as you watch everyone slowly begin to come to the same conclusion, as the silence continued, this was not a joke by administration. This was real. This was happening.

You had to find a way to stop the game...

It will be interesting to see how you handle the player made characters, your ideas vs the creators ideas. Doubt you have seen the anime I based my character on, curious to see what will happen. Also wondering if you can manage a mystery in quest format. The rules look like it could end real quick.

You look back up from your watch when you hear shouting...

“You lying bitch!!!” Sigurd shouts.

Cantara is the one receiving the abuse. “What the fuck are you talking about, prick!?”

“This is an illusion by you, well it ain’t funny... So fucking quit it, so we can get some sleep!” The senior student shouts, all his confidence replaced with a mix of fear and anger.

“Hmph... I thought you said you could handle a test...” Brenna remarks.

“What was that...?” Sigurd turns to her, more inflamed than before.

“Sis... Please...” Iona says quietly, lightly pulling Brenna’s sleeve.

“I believe Bergamo. This is no illusion... So quit taking your anger out on all of us!” The older sister shouts.

“Oh? And what if this is real? Can’t hexes kill without leaving a trace? I think we can pin our first killer right here, right now...”

Brenna pulls her hat lower. “My hexes aren’t weapons, or toys... And I’d never leave any one of you to die if it meant all of us...” She looks back to Iona, “All of us are in danger here! So stop thinking of just yourself...”

Just then, everyone turns to the sound of a flame flicking to life.

Eric’s smoking what looks to be an orange colored cigar...? He’s lighting it with a zippo, that he summoned. Everyone goes back to being tense after the realization...

>”Nobody will kill anybody!” (Hopeful)

“I don’t doubt this could be some kinda trick...” You start, breaking up the conversation. “Does anyone here have their barrier key?”

Everyone rummages their pockets. Coming up empty...

“Wow, that bear is really sneaky!” Greta says behind you cheerily. (How did she get behind you...?) “He took even MY key! He’s a master!”

“Don’t compliment him...” Jac mutters.

“Gabe...” You ask GG, he doesn’t respond. “GG..?” Now there’s a response.

“What is it?”

“So... The whole world seemed empty?” You ask him.

“Ghost town... Ghost world? It’s like the only people here are us, and that bear, and his minions!” He responds. “They took me up high... It was a view to be sure.”

You shake your head. “The school has to be okay... If the world is gone... The barrier must’ve protected the school, right? Partially?”

Some students nod their heads. A couple scoff, mainly Cantara and Sigurd.

“Screw this... I’m going to bed. I’ll see you assholes tomorrow morning!” Sigurd yells, storming out of the auditorium from the side exit...

“Likewise... But...” Bergamo looks to Brenna, “You’re not assholes, clearly...” She gives a smile. “I’ll see you all around... If this isn’t a dream, that is...” And she, too walks out.

The rest begin filing out of the main entrance to see the outside world...

Or what remains of it.

A promising student night life is now a completely silent campus.

“HEY!! Anyone!?!?” Eric shouts into some buildings...

No reply...

“GG, you were brought back, right? Does that mean the barrier is gone?” You ask.

“Definitely not... Those familiars have the keys, that’s how they got me inside.”

Drat...

You look to Cindy, who hasn’t been talking much, deliberating to herself. “Will living here be so bad...? If we run out of food, there’s farmland and equipment. The only thing we'll have to deal with is retaliation from that Monokuma... But if we strike hard and fast to defend ourselves, nobody has to die!”

“Screw that... I’m stronger than that!” Eric shouts. “I’m gonna stay up, see if I can find that bear and get some damn answers!” He angrily storms off, placing that colored cigar in his mouth again...

“Percy’s right, you know... L-let’s all talk tomorrow... It’s a shame we didn’t get to... Really meet as friends...” Jacuzzi apologetically says, waving and heading toward the dorms.

Everyone else follows suit... Saying nothing. Cindy dashes off, likely beating all of you there.

The atmosphere has been drowned, in despair...

You open the door, headed for the dormitory exit. Along the way you pass by the lounge... It’s strangely lively, if only in presences. Nobody’s speaking. Everyone’s here except for Sigurd, Iona, and of course, Eric...

You walk past the lounge, headed outside, but as soon as you place your hand on the handle to open the large double doors, another hand meets your arm. You nearly recoil violently, until you notice the white dress...

It’s Iona...

“You’re going to look for... Eric, right?” She asks. “I mean... No other reason to leave.”

You nod. “Just feels right if everyone’s here for the night.” You glance at your watch, it’s 8:23 PM... Been a little while since Monokuma revealed himself... “I understand if you’re worried, but I’ll be okay, and so will Eric!” You attempt to reassure. But Iona doesn’t seem to be having it.

“Sis thinks I’m asleep... I-I wanna help...” She says, letting go of your arm. “It’s okay if maybe my ability isn’t... Helpful for this sort of thing... I can just stay here.”

You decide... It can’t be that bad, can it? Monokuma wanted the class to kill eachother... He wouldn’t just kill any of you for no reason... So you decide Iona’s safe with you. She beams.

“Really...? Oh, thanks Perseus... I-I’ll stay close!” She says.

———

You both walk through the village for around twenty minutes, it’s both a search and a tour of sorts. She’s apparently already seen most of the facilities, so Iona points out what’s what.

“There’s the student life center...” She says, pointing to a large complex, the architecture looks about as old and regal, yet simple, as everything else. “There’s all kinds of recreational equipment in there...”

Could Eric be there? If this has gym equipment, perhaps he gave up the search and came here to de-stress... It’s just a hunch...

———

You enter the somehow-unlocked student life center. There’s a staircase in the lobby, going up and down. A sign shows the directory...

There’s an arcade, a gym, a small community theatre, and an alchemy lab!

You head up to the gym, and as per your hunch, Eric is there, punching an old bag, his jacket is unzipped, showing his lack of a shirt, but his hood is up. As you come closer... There’s a decal on the bag. A decal of Monokuma...

He hears your footsteps and turns around, looking very angry, you can see Iona shrink slightly under his gaze... But when he realizes it’s just you two, he lightens up considerably. “Found a big sticker of that plush bear fucker... Thought it’d look good on a bag... Couldn’t find the thing for real though... There’s always tomorrow right?”

>”Speaking of tomorrow, we should head back right away. It’s not safe out here.”

There ain’t a rush to get home... And Iona and Eric seem quite calm despite the circumstances. The latter takes his gloves off, letting them disappear per his summoning magic... “How are you both doin’? Everyone else holding up okay...?”

“Yes, we’re all... Well... More than a little downtrodden...” Iona trails off.

“But we aren’t beat yet, not even close.” You do, trying to lighten the mood.

“Thaaat’s the spirit!” Eric laughs. “Hey, Percy, you box? Wanna give me a go...?”

You shake your head. “You’d likely just flatten me in one punch, if I’m being honest... You did a number on that sticker!”

“You certainly did...” Iona giggles. Coming out of her comfort zone a bit, it seems... She must spend a lot of time with her sister.

Is that why she wanted to accompany you? You’ve heard of siblings being overbearing before... It makes sense. You just hope Brenna won’t be mad at you, it’s justified that she’s even more protective when the entire class’s lives are on the line...

“Percy, if you wont have a go with me, maybe take a few test shots on that sticker?”

“NOW HANG ON JUST A MINUTE!”

The three of you turn, Iona gasping, likely the first to come to the realization.

Monokuma stood in the doorway, looking somehow annoyed...

(Continued)
>>
>>3961551
“Finally showin’ yourself...?” Eric summons his gloves again, but then something else... Some portals open around him, and out of them, emerge some small jester looking entities... “You want a match, huh? Well you’re getting one whether you like it or not!

“Not so fast, you’re breaking the rules!” Monokuma chortles. “Ahaha, I do love that enthusiasm though! But if you lay a finger on me... I’ll have you immediately executed, along with the rest of the class! You will stay in line...”

Eric squints, Iona is staying behind him. “You’re bluffin’...” He says.

“Am I...?” Ponders the bear.

“Grr... Shit!” Eric’s summons all disappear. “What the fuck do you want?”

“Well... Just making a few last minute setups!” He hums, walking to the corner by the boxing ring, and placing down a large object... A security camera!?

“Are you gonna be... Watching us?” You ask.

“Of course! Only right to keep tabs, and my Monowizards... They’re a bit dimwitted at times! Don’t let a subordinate do a job meant for the bear himself!” More laughter. Monokuma loved the sound of his own voice, you supposed. “And... Oh no!” He climbs into the ring, peeling the sticker off the bag. “Well... Fortunately for you all... This doesn’t count as an attack on me specifically... You’ll live... But you’ve devalued this quite a bit.”

Iona tilts her head. “Devalued...?”

“Yes, yes! I’ve lost so many of these stickers, I was planning to sell them off... But I’ve got enough. So, consider you three to be the first to receive the news! I’ve got a bounty out, for every sticker you find, I’ll compensate with Monocoins out of my own pocket!” He pulls something out from behind him... Does he have a pocket? Or does he pull objects from...

Oh dear, anything but that!

He tosses a few objects at Eric, who catches them with perfect reflexes...

“Hell’re these? ...Coins?”

“Monocoins! I’d give you a lot more but...” Monokuma’s voice lowers slightly. “You beat it within inches of life... So it’s only worth ten...” He looks back up. “Happy hunting! I’ll be making an announcement soon... By the way, curfew is 12:00 AM! If you’re caught outside your dorm, you’ll be given a minor punishment... I’ll be updating everyone else over the announcements soon! So run on home!” And with that, the bear scurries out of the gym with an inhuman speed...

You check your watch. 9:00 PM... You got some time...

(Continued)
>>
>>3961569
You feel as if you’ve escaped hell... Was Monokuma telling the truth about attacking him? Could he really bring a punishment like that, or could he be killed before anything bad happens?

Furthermore... He has his own currency... Perhaps trying to analyze unexpected places will find you some stickers, the money might be necessary later on...

Iona is looking down, as if she’s seen a ghost. She then looks at Eric...

You notice Eric taking out another cigarette, lighting it. Iona gives a gasp.

“That’s... Bad for you... Isn’t it!? S-stop!” She yells.

“Huh...?” He moves out of the way, as Iona tries to grab the cigar. “Relax... It’s not real, it’s a cherry cigar. No nicotine, just... A little sugar.” He peels off the label and hands it to you.

Huh, imagine that, he’s right. It’s a candy cigar that releases flavor under flame... Must be a product of magical development...

He takes one hit, blowing the inoffensive smelling smoke away. He stares at Iona. “What’s gotten into you...? Sorry if I’m being too paranoid with this... But are you worried about me?”

Iona frowns. “I’m worried about everyone... Same as you?”

Eric nods. “Same as me...”

You smile a little. Taking in the unexpected, but heartwarming moment. “I think that’s enough. We should head back before others worry even more.”

“Eh... Fine! Guess I’ll give everyone the bad news, that it’s a terrible idea to try and poke that beast...” Eric looks a bit... Defeated... “So much for my goals of an undefeated season...”

You sigh. Being optimistic with your feelings would only be a lie, and lies aren’t what this class needs in this situation... “It’s gonna be a fight, alright... But if we do nothing, that might be a fate worse than losing this game... That bear, I can feel he wants to turn us against eachother. And the more time passes, the more he can find ways of forcing that. We need a plan... Sooner rather than later, but we can win, we have to win...”

Eric places a firm hand on your shoulder. “It’s not that we can win, we WILL win. Or my titles don’t mean shit...” Eric chuckles. “I’m gonna stick around here another hour or so... But I’ll be back, before midnight, count on it!”

You can’t argue with that, he sure is set on his goals...

Why does he give so much of a shit? He’s only just met most of you...

You wave as you head back to the entrance... This time, taking the elevator.

It’s... kind of slow. You have a small moment with Iona as the room temperature heats up.

“Brenna told me about this... A lot of school infrastructure is old. Not like, first generation magic old, but definitely not stuff from the 21st century... It breaks pretty often. Guess the 3rd floor elevator A/C is one of those things...”

She sighs, seemingly fishing for conversation topics.

Iona blinks. “Uh... I can speak with spirits, called Divines... Nobody else can see them except for a select few people.” She sighs. “Divination is a frowned upon magical art... Because it’s almost impossible to prove. For one, it’s not by bloodline, it’s seemingly random. And then, nobody but other diviners can see the Divines... So when I got the letter that I’d be the school's first student diviner... I was really happy.” She smiled. “So many people doubted me, but my sister believed me the whole time, and so do the council that selected me, I guess.” She then turned to you. “Perseus... Do you believe me? It’s okay if you don’t... But... I just wish I could trust someone other than Sis for once, especially now... I’ve never actually been to a magic school with others. “I don’t have a reason to doubt you, if you’re here, it must mean you’re here for your magic...” You see her lighten up a bit, but she doesn’t quite smile.

“Thanks... I’m sure that Sigurd guy is gonna pick on me for “not having any magic” or something... But they’re real, I’ve seen them, and they tell me things...” She takes a breath. “There's a common misconception about Divines, they aren’t ghosts. I can’t speak to the dead... At least... Not usually. Only the vengeful spirits become Divines with time. The rest of them... Well, normal Divines? They’re more like... Figments or shared consciousness. If everyone thinks about a single concept, it becomes a Divine, and roams the realm, only seeable by humans with the power of divination... There’s major Divines for all the emotions and other human concepts, but I don’t think anybody has spoken with one of those... I can speak with only minors. Little thought pieces.”

You think about that... With the tensions here... “Iona, have you spoken with any Divines yet since the orientation ceremony?”

She thinks for a few seconds, looking up at you with a sure expression... “Not yet, n-no... At first... I thought that Monokuma might be a Divine... But everyone else can see him, s-so... He must be a part of reality!”

Then this is all real... You feel like you’ve gotten to know Iona quite well today.

Just then, the elevator finally clicks onto the first floor, the doors wheeling open.

As you step out into the air, you realize the temperature has dropped. Night has certainly fallen over Pagus...

The two of you hurry back to the dormitories...

As soon as you enter the double doors, Brenna is upon you. Pelting you with question after question...

“Where were you two!? Why did you take Iona with you!? Did you kill Eric!?” She shouted, making you feel as if you did commit a crime, despite the opposite being true.

Iona takes her sister's hand, informing her of all that happened, and how it was her idea to go with you. Brenna immediately simmers down a bit. Iona heads off to bed afterwards.

“I... owe you an apology... But, you must understand, I’m her older sister, her caretaker, so if you’re gonna do something like that... Tell me next time!”

You chuckle. “Technically, she’s the one who took care of me... Guess she gets it from you!”

“This is not a laughing matter... Oh, it’s fine, just... Be on your guard, as I will be on mine.”

With those words, she departs to her room as well...

You guess you should follow suit, you’re much too sleepy...

———

You lock your door, and tuck into bed... It’s been such a long day... Will it ever end? This nightmare?

Perhaps you can block it out with... A dream...

You feel yourself climbing into the realm of sweet dreams...

Until...

https://youtu.be/9mV6_RlVUtQ

You shoot up, expecting the worst, and it’s something like that...

There’s now a huge TV monitor on the opposite side of your room! And gracing it’s screen is none other than Monokuma...

“Attention to aaaaall Ultimate Magical Students! This is your headmaster speaking! And I’ve got a very important closing message for the night, so listen up!” You watch as the bear effigy flaps a sheet of papers. “Firstly, some ground rules! For this first week, a 12 AM curfew will be in effect! If you’re caught outside of your dormitory... You’ll receive a minor punishment, a cold hard cell to sleep in for the entirety of the week! If I catch more than one of ya, I’ll force you all to share!” He giggles. “Secondly, you aren’t permitted to attack me, as if you could in the first place... The consequences will be a FULL punishment! And finally...” The camera zooms in, his face fills the frame. “Tomorrow afternoon, there will be a mandatory class meeting at the elemental sciences building! Don’t be late! Okay, that’s all I got to say, now get some shuteye, relax! Build that hope a little longer... Upupu~”

The screen shuts off. How did it even get in your room!?

A meeting tomorrow... Huh? Another one? You wonder what Monokuma will do there... But you’ll never know until the time comes...

You doze off soon after...

-DAY I END-
>>
Aight. That’s all for today. Won’t be updating much tomorrow, maybe 3 or 4 posts max. I gotta study, so I’ll see y’all Wednesday or Thursday to complete DAY II.
I’ll stick around for a bit to answer questions.
Let’s get one thing out of the way. Yes. I have mostly planned the first murder so far. What I haven’t planned yet is who it will happen to, and extraneous details like testimonies and false suspects or whatnot. That case won’t happen until thread 2, so I’d say that would be Friday or saturday this week. If you wanna gather clues from this thread starting now, go ahead, but they’re gonna be subtle if anything.
>>
>>3961766
>If you wanna gather clues
Never played the games. Are you saying it's possible to "beat" Mono?
>>
>>3961776
Not quite

Essentially what I’m saying is everything could potentially be a clue, and you won’t know until the killing happens. You’ll need evidence and clues to eventually figure out who the killer is.
Any clues possibly provided to you at this point are not even close to enough to convict the killer, but eventually you’ll have enough. All relevant evidence will be logged in the “Monokuma File” before the trial, so nothing will ever be confusing as “is this a clue or not?” The challenge is knowing what evidence will contradict who's statements, or knowing whether or not logged evidence is truly relevant.

The class trial is essentially Ace Attorney: Battle Royale. I’ll go over exact rules for class trials when the time comes.
>>
>>3961786
How will free time events work? Will we get skills?
>>
>>3961789
You will get skills, and learn lots about your classmates. They will also have higher chances of believing you when you roll to regain influence (when you make a mistake, you lose influence, and must roll to regain it) as for other skills, I’m thinking some up, but they’ll probably be additions to you or other students' magic and rolls, both in and out of trials.
>>
Aight I’m boutta head out. See y’all soon. Thanks for playing!

-DAY II-

~Daily Life~

———

You awaken from a dream about home.

You look around, slightly confused, until you remember... You’re a college student here now. This is where you’re living...

Wasn’t there something else, too?

That’s when you hear it.

https://youtu.be/9mV6_RlVUtQ

You turn to the monitor, which has automatically turned on to show a black and white teddy bear on screen...

It’s all coming back to you. The orientation, the killing game, the dread you felt...

“Gooooood morning everyone! Congratulations on making it to your first official day at Pagus University!” Monokuma greets you, and the rest of the students. “Don’t forget the agenda! Class meeting at 2 PM! Elemental Sciences building! Attempting to skip this meeting will result in minor punishment!” He’s cheerful, despite what he’s describing... It’s fucked up. “Now let’s all do our veeeeeery best!” Monokuma gives a salute, and the screen fades to black.

You check your watch... It’s 10:20 AM. You got a little time...

You climb out of bed, noticing right away that a note has been slid under your door... You pick up and immediately read it...

“Perseus

I’ve arranged for us all to meet at the Houdini’s Tavern at noon, to talk things out before Monokuma’s assembly begins. Of course, this includes you. It’d be wise to show up, we need every mind we can get to beat that bear.

Sincerely, Brenna Crane.”

The handwriting sure is proper...

A meeting before the meeting...

You shut the door to your dorm room and head out to the lounge.

Looks like there’s only a couple people here...

GG is sitting on the couch, playing some fighting game on the TV...

Greta is sipping something out of a mug, presumably coffee?

And finally, Randy is dozing off in a chair...

You feel like you should talk to one of them...

You take a seat next to Gabe, watching him play for a moment... He sighs. “Sucks there’s no internet here anymore... The CPU doesn’t provide any challenge, it just reads your buttons and occasionally “forgets” to block.”

“SLASH!” The announcer of the game yells. Followed by: “Johnny... Wins! Straight!”

“How about you, bloke? You play video games?”

“Then could you play me in one match of a Guilty Gear? Come on, doesn’t matter if you’re good or not, I just need an opponent who’s human for once!”

You sigh, picking up and turning on the spare PS4 controller. What have you got to lose anyway...?

GG chuckles when you pick Slayer, as if to say “that character's too technical for a beginner like you!” But you know exactly what you’re doing.

2 rounds, many perfect backdash cancels and dandy step punishes later, you have double perfected Gabriel Golden at his own game.

He kinda just stares at you, confused. “I didn’t figure you’d have this kinda skill... But that was amazing! Man... I don’t really wanna play this anymore after getting beat that badly, but, if you got some time later... Could you play me some more? I’d get a lot better like that...” You can feel his admiration burning. Did you really do that well? Just felt natural to you, you’ve played the series for a long time, maybe he’s not as much of a veteran to the gaming scene as you believed...

“Yeah, I’d love to...”

“Thanks! Now... I think I’m gonna play something that takes a little less commitment...” He says, queuing up some No More Heroes III on the console.

You should probably leave him be...

You check your watch, it’s nearly noon... GG will probably just teleport to the meeting area, but you don’t have that luxury. So you guess you’re gonna start walking...

(Continued)

>>3962824
The quaint little café, “Houdini’s Tavern...”

As you walk up, you can hear the chatter of classmates, and smell breakfast being prepared... But by who?

Opening the door, a small chime rings to announce your arrival. Everyone turns, you receive a smile from Eric and Iona, indifference from others, but you receive a scowl from Cantara. Not that you expected anything else...

There are a few who have yet to show... GG and Cindy you think will show. They both have the speed to be here any time they so choose... But Sigurd is missing... You figure he’s avoiding everyone, out of disgust, or maybe fear? It depends, really.

You take a seat at the table Iona, Eric, and Brenna are sitting in.

“How’s it going?” You ask Brenna.

“Good... But... I’m a bit worried for the future.” She states.

“That’s putting it broadly...”

“Well, the immediate danger... Is breakfast.”

You tilt your head. “Breakfast...?”

“Who do you think’s cookin’ it!?” Eric says, punctuating with a fist on the wood table. “That bear’s cronies... I’m not eating a thing they’re servin’!” He says with a bit of a grin. “I broke open a vending machine, so we got some food there if you need it.”

“It does smell quite nice...” Iona mutters, shaking her head. “But... I don’t trust it either, no...”

“Maybe I can cook something up next time...” You suggest. You’re a good cook, gotta be if you’re gonna be an alchemist. “But for now, I’m just here for what you have to say, Brenna...”

She raises a hand. “It’s not about what I have to say, it’s what we together need to plan out... Which is why I hope that senior shows up...”

She’s talking about Sigurd. He’s the only senior student in the class...

Suddenly, as you all become lost in thought, plates of pancakes, eggs, and bacon, miraculously appear before you.

“BREAKFAST! IS! ON!” You hear several voices similar to Monokuma’s below upstairs, likely that’s where the kitchen is...

“Tch, none of this shit even looks healthy... Who eats pancakes with THIS much butter?” Eric scoffs jokingly.

“Well, we aren’t gonna just touch it-“

You hear someone begin eating, quite quickly at that... You turn to see Randy downing a plate of eggs, he stops when he notices the silence.

“...What? Most important meal of the day... It’s pretty good, too!” He reasons.

“B-but... Won’t you die...? You do know who made all that food, don’t you?” Jacuzzi looks very worried... Wait... Is he crying? Already? Strange...

You sigh. Your stomach rumbles, craving something better than potato chips and energy drinks... “Monokuma isn’t trying to kill us... I know that much for sure. He wants us to kill eachother. So... I think the food is safe.”

“If you wanna go ahead, by all means...” Cantara huffs. “But if you die, we lose an asset.”

An asset...? You?

Taking a breath, you cut a piece of one flapjack...

You take the bite.

...

Randy was right. It’s pretty good! Taste wise anyway... Could use a spot of syrup.

Everyone stares at you and Randy, and after about 2 or so minutes, the tension has only grown. People begin debating whether or not to eat...

“Guess there’s nothing wrong with it... What nice little wizard bears!” Greta exclaims.

“Who’s side are you on...?” Brenna replies.

“I-I don’t know... What to do...” Jac says, with a light sniffle.

You sigh. “This is what I was talking about... If the paranoia gets to us, we lose. So if you wanna eat, go ahead, but let’s not bicker over it!” You take another bite, this time with a bit of syrup. Yeah, thaaaaat’s the stuff.

As time passes, one by one, more people cave in, trying and enjoying the food. Pretty soon... The liveliness has reentered the café... Only pausing at the simultaneous arrival of GG and Cindy. GG comes down the kitchen stairs, likely having teleported up there to avoid having to open the door, and Cindy enters the door at a speed that almost tears it off, the only warning being the bell chime...

After most of the class has finished eating, your attention is grabbed by a sharp “dingdingding!”

Brenna is standing on her chair, and she used a fork and glass to produce the loud sound. Looks like the meeting would be underway, without that overachieving coward Sigurd...

(Continued)
>>
>>3963125
“Alright... We are all gathered right here to discuss the situation at hand, now that we’ve all had some sleep and food...” She steps down. “There’s questions we need to try and deduce... But... We need to get two things out of the way first off.” She raises her right hand in the air, balled into a fist. “We must swear an oath, to stick together, and abstain from this game. So repeat after me... For my life, for my classmates, for my family, and for the good of the world.”

“Isn’t it irresponsible to appoint yourself as some kind of leader?” Sigurd comments- wait, Sigurd? He’s standing at the doorway... “You’re a sophomore anyway... Asking people to take oaths? That’s just too much.”

Brenna scowls. “Well what’s YOUR plan, then?”

“We need to use our abilities to unravel this game!” Sigurd says, staring directly at Iona. “Those of us who HAVE abilities, that is...”

Iona deflates, and despite her being on the other side of the table, you wish you could tell her it’s all okay...

“Percy boy makes a good point with the food. Monokuma isn’t trying to kill us. He has the school! The headmaster! The mana crystal! What could he possibly gain slaughtering us...?”

“What’s your p-p-point...?” Jac asks.

“When he said this was a test, he didn’t mean of our will, or our friendship... Monokuma has given us a true test of magical ability.” Sigurd answers.

Eric immediately jumps from his seat. “Sounds like you WANT to play this shitty game! Is that it?”

“Absolutely not.” Sigurd replies. “But I did read something interesting... Maybe if you’d be a little nicer, I’d fill you in!”

Brenna sighs, and Eric sits down. “Go ahead, then...” She says.

(Continued)
>>
>>3963171
“Thank you...” Sigurd holds up a tome of sorts. “Earlier this morning, I went to go visit the student union... Specifically, to see the mana crystal... But the damn bears are guarding it air tight. Their operation has to do with the crystal, and we... Might just be a means to that.” He opens the book, laying out on the table. “Mana energy’s infinite possibility comes from the idea of its birth: the shards came from the heavens, discreetly landing in locations across the globe... And the first one to be unearthed was in Pagus town, 1835... A widowed mother of ten living in this village suddenly gained the first true magic abilities. She was accused of sacrificing her children, and subsequently burned as a witch... But the truth was that deep in the mines underground, her children had come into contact with the mana crystal... The ultimate mystery wouldn’t be realized until much later after magic had become a normalized study: the mana crystals react to death...” He looks up from reading, adjusting his glasses. “Children playing a game of death, sound familiar?”

“But we don’t know why he needs us specifically... Or what he wants with the crystal, or even how to stop him!” Brenna shouts. “If the mystery of how mana crystals use death for their energy is still unsolved, how are we the answer...? Stop flexing your knowledge and let’s form a PLAN.”

“The plan is to solve the mystery before Monokuma does. Simple enough, right?” Sigurd says jokingly.

“Oh! Oh! What if we all rushed the Union? They can’t stop all of us!” Greta interjects.

Sigurd wants to focus on the science and lore behind it all... While Brenna wants to focus on simply surviving and escaping...

“Well none of this qualifies you as a leader...” Brenna looks away condescendingly.

“And what qualifies you? Is looking after that fraud student kid sister of yours not enough? Gotta look after nine more of us? Not happening...”

“Well... We could play a game to decide who’s the leader.” GG suggests. “Not a killing game, though...”

“What about a vote...?” You suggest. “Dividing ourselves between two won’t work, so let’s vote right here, right now for the leader...”

Eric nods. “Good idea... All in favor of...”

Who should lead the class until you all know more?

Actually, do we need to choose a leader? There's no reason we can't just choose a priority then make actions towards it vote based. Though it could still be useful to have Brenna act as a manager of sorts.
>>
>>3963218
>Brenna
So who do you guys think is a person that is here but really shouldn't? Iona is definitely a suspect.

What I'm trying to point out. Before introduction Monokuma stated that everyone is here, but he stated this again when late person arrived. Does he not know how many person should be present?
Wouldn't that mean that there is person among us that isn't a student.

It will be. I kinda implied that at the end too, sorry if it wasn’t clear. This is essentially just a narrative choice.

Brenna still wins the vote though, we might make it up to the Salty senior later on...

“...Sigurd!”

The class one by one raises their hands.

Jac.

Greta.

Gabe.

Cindy.

After a moment, they lower their hands.

“All in favor of... Brenna!”

Iona.

Eric.

Cantara.

Randy.

You hesitate... You’re the tiebreaker...

You raise your hand for Brenna...

Sigurd looks away, everyone lowers their hands.

“Then that settles it! Brenna Crane will be making the plans for now...” Eric says.

“I’m not here to dictate what you all do... I’m simply here to suggest we all stay tight knit. Perseus is right. Monokuma wants us to separate in search of our own truth... So we need to find the one, together. But it’s only going to happen if we focus on abstaining from the game as long as possible, not try researching it.” Brenna nods. “But... I guess I won’t make you all swear an oath.”

Sigurd was right, the oath was a bit much.

The man of the hour scoffed. “Humph, then I’ll execute my own plan, I’ll be the one to break this game, and I’ll expect thanks when it’s done!”

“Well don’t expect any from me, I’m not kissing the boots of someone who calls me a fatass, even if they do save my life!” Randy yells.

Just before the room can descend to chaos again...

https://youtu.be/9mV6_RlVUtQ

“Attention all students! Your OFFICIAL class meeting is about to begin! So quit with your UNOFFICIAL one and get your asses moving!” Monokuma states over the intercom.

Everyone is silent. GG has already disappeared.

Guess it's time to hear what Monokuma has to say... He knew of your meeting here, is he going to attempt to shake up your teamwork?

You guess you won’t know until you get there...

Upcoming finals are killing my writing muse. So I’m gonna call it a night here, I’ll get back to it tomorrow afternoon!
Thanks for playing! And now I have a question for you all: how am I doing fleshing out individual characters? It’s fun working with these sorts of templates but I have the slight worry that I’m going ham with ideas for some and falling flat with others. But there’s always time to add add add more more more depth depth depth! Suggestions are welcome too, though I’ll probably take liberty with them to keep them in line if I need to.

Also, for the anon interested, I have now watched some Baccano! And I’ve tried to pivot a little bit of Jacuzzi’s character to be further in line. But I’ll need to see more of the show to get it. Work in progress I guess...

“Well it’s not like you’re flat out wrong... The mana crystal is the most valuable part of this school. Of course Monokuma would want it... The real questions are why, and what we or this game have to do with it.” You watch him give you a frustrated scowl. “The only problem being, we can’t get there if we don’t have a surefire way of getting around the killing game. So until then, we have to stick together.”

“Surefire way to get yourself killed.” Sigurd adds. “Think about it. Everyone in this clusterfuck, the minute someone dies, it’s all chaos... Fingers would be pointing all around. You gotta know your place, so that you know your friends, enemies, and killers...”

You think. “Play defensively all you want, but ever consider that makes YOU look like a suspect?”

“Are you accusing me of plotting...?”

“I’m accusing you of having an image problem...” Despite who you’re talking to, you feel almost laid back around Sigurd. He’s not so bad... He grins a bit. “We shall see, I guess.” He says, walking faster. “But leave all the investigating to me, while you all survive, I’m gonna try thriving.”

You watch him move further up, away from you...

You’re all coming up to the building. Elemental Sciences... It looks like a dome of sorts. You can see many Monokuma familiars ready to usher you in. GG is standing at the doorway, waving passively while playing some DS game now...
