The demon's illusory sound quickly turns the heads of your team mates. The supposed sound of your screams and a sickening crack.
Alina: "Christof!"
Alina prepares to move into the circle but Shawel blocks her.
Shawel: "Don't. Christof will win."
Alina looks helplessly as Al'Gokoz tries to stangle you. Momentarily forgetting Ulric and Olin holding back the invading skeletons trying to push in through the doorway.

Shawel is right though. You *will* win. You drop your hammer and take out an oil flask. Still blinded by the toxin you threw at him the demon doesn't notice and continues choking the life out of you. You pour the liquid all over his gangly gripping hand and feel his grip loosen. You grip your hammer with your right hand and try to break out of his grip and bound back over the edge of the protection circle. Al'gokoz maintains his grip as much as he's able and balances himself precariously so you will pull him out of the circle with you. With your free hand you get out your Rod of Wind Wall and cast it at point blank. A roaring curtain of wind appear between the two of you and you heave yourself out of the circle. With the Wind Wall impeding him and his slippery grip, the demon fails to topple out of the protection circle.

You regain your balance fully outside of the circle. While Al'Gokoz remains trapped inside. Boy does he look angry! You check the edge to see none of the sigils have been spoiled, not even by the swirling wind wall or the drops of oils that splattered on the floor.

Al'Gokoz stops fuming and makes a wicked grin. His blinded eyes still firmly shut.
He moves to the opposite edge of the circle close to the mindless undead and starts casting spells.
Al'Gokoz casts Invisibility on Skeleton Captain.

>"Salaman! How much longer?"
Salaman hasn't even taken his eyes off the grimoire this entire time, paying zero attention to the battle behind him.
Salaman: "60 seconds. Don't distract me."
You briefly see Al'Gokoz turn his head in surprise at the claim. But you don't think Salaman is bluffing.

Malgrave is still a low magic area with a spell casting penalty, Al'Gokoz and Olin are skilled enough to spam low level spells reliably even with the penalty.
Christof is also maintaining 6 Protection From Evil Spells so he has a crippling total of -80 to casting Abjuration right now.
Alina got lucky when she cast Dispel.
There is still a disruption field that interferes with telepathy which is preventing Olin from taking control of the undead. It probably interferes with other stuff too.

Well, the one that seems to have entered anyway.
Nobody should make a move towards the circle.

I say that we should focus on the melee and the remaining captain. Let Olin deal with Al's gambit.
Perhaps we should shout something inspiring about how worthy he's proven to have been in the battle, letting him know we might be swaying on executing him. (I am anyway.) Sell that we're still a better option than Evil Al.

He slams the Grimoire shut and the Magical Circle changes from a dark blood colour to a bright glowing red.
The ground under the circle starts collapsing revealing a dark bottomless pit. Starting from the center and expanding to the outside of the circle.
The Skeletal Guard tumbles into the pit.
The demon futilely tries to move away from the expanding pit but can't leave the circle.

He has acquitted himself well. I think acquittal is a fine result. We might not have fared as well without his help. He was instrumental in banishing an evil from this world.

A little while after you have dinner you decide to speak with Salaman. You'll part ways with him tomorrow after all.
>"Salaman, a word?"
Salaman: "Of course"
You sit down next to him on the grass.
Salaman: "You want to use the Crystal Ball again?""
>"No, this is about the 'conflict' between us."
He looks aside uncomfortably.
Salaman: "I don't think I can really help give you closure on that. But say what you need to say."

We believe in justice. Failing to acknowledge and honor the work he has done towards redeeming himself would be unjust.
I feel Christof would like to forgive Salaman, but trust broken cannot be mended easily or by choice.

It's been like a year for ME since the betrayal, but it hasn't even been a month for christof. Still, this may be the last time we see him. It would be a shame no to absolve him of guilt.

All attributes can be used for saving throws eg: DEX for avoiding Shawel's Water Whip, CON for resisting Polymorph

Skill base values are partially determined by attributes.

Feats have Attribute requirements, Christof can learn Improved Flurry but with only 5 STR he can't learn Improved Power Attack (which does pair pretty well with the 2-handed weapon style)

STR increases your melee damage
DEX increases your AC
CON increases your HP
INT increases you skill points
CHA increases your max party size
PER increases your ranged accuracy
LUCK increases your critical hit chance
(The differences are quite small, having a better quality weapon will increase damage more than having higher STR)

Earlier on I wanted weapons to have a minimum strength requirement but I accidentally let the players buy a Longbow for Alina (who only has 3 STR) forgetting to warn them so I ditched that idea. Alina ended up very inaccurate with her ranged weapons at the start anyway, she only ended up accurate after practicing for a long time (putting skill points in ranged) and getting an easy to use bow + the magic gauntlets.

The hammer is still a good weapon for Christof because he doesn't have any way of fighting armoured opponents except with high damage.
>>
>>3974230
interesting, so we can easily become a better archer then Alina
>>3973473
I vote for
-Bonus Ranged Accuracy
and
-40 Ranged

Lots of situations where being a god at arrows would be useful, we can always swap out to hammer in melee. We also now have 2 really good bows I see no reason not to do this. Both when we fought the slavers and the big fight vs the cultists using a bow would have been godly.

We always try being the "melee" guy and have to get healed a fuck load and having 100 potions thrown at us maybe we should use the FREE character slot in our party on a meat wall guy with a shield. Salaman used to provide lots of meat with his summons but he is gone now and we are feeling that sting in these past engagements I feel.

Ranged theory isn't bad, but 20 of those points are for magic.
And a 20%+ accuracy with a bow isn't really superior to trying to gain better spell skill and ranged spells, I think.

Yeah. I think that this might be best.
Agreed

Still on the fence between Athletics and 120% Abjuration. Both are useful when they come up.
>>
Leadership is the one that increases all of your party members' rolls by a little bit
Bonus Party Member is the one that increases your party size, but you already have a vacant slot in your party and the feat isn't available to take again

investing 20 skill points in Abjuration will increase it to 110, since after 100 it costs 2 points to increase by 1
>>
>>3976820
Could you describe the rest? Some I can guess what they do, but I'm really certain of how much they influence.

Like, what magical sense lets us do? Sense magic? Can we analyse magic? and what about "Bonus spellcasting", is it a bonus to all magic rolls? Or an added effect like "when you cast x, y also happens"?

Sorry if I'm asking too much.
>>
>LeaderShip II
increases your leadership bonus from +5 to +10, affects attack rolls, spellcasting, saving throws and skill checks, does not affect damage or critical hits
>Bonus Damage
increases your damage by +2, useful for characters that hit many times in the same round
>Bonus Ranged Accuracy
increases accuracy with ranged attacks and ranged spells by +15, (some ranged attack spells hit automatically, some don't)
>Improved Power Attack
instead of doing 120% damage you do 150% damage
>Improved Flurry
Instead of attacking for 70% of normal damage twice you attack for 90% of normal damage twice
>Improved Counter Attack
You get to declare two types of attack instead of just one
>Magic Resistance
Spells that would affect you have a -15 penalty to succeed
>Evasion II
Increase your AC by a further 8 points
>Two Weapon Fighting
No accuracy penalty for offhand attacks
>Magic Sense
You can sense the presence of magic and the power level of the magic, but cannot yet distinguish what school of magic or specific effects. Otherworldly magic, like that emanated by Djinns is distinct enough to be recognized by lvl 1 magic sense
>Bonus Spellcasting
All spell casting attempts from all schools +15
>Better Criticals
When you land a critical hit, Improves your roll on the critical table which can increase the damage multiplier and severity of effects like knockdown, knockout. If this feat causes you to roll over the normal limits of the critical table it causes an instant kill
>All Spells Self-Stack
your spell effects stack with themselves for potentially useless or game breaking results
>Gain Spells (Add new spells to your spellbook)

The following morning Salaman leaves with the Box. Now it's time to plan your route to the Necropolis of Tywardreath.

You huddle around a map of the local area.
Ulric: "We are down here, and Tywardreath is way up over here."
Shawel: "This river leads directly to the city. We could build a raft and travel down the Blue Stream with my magic."
Alina: "That goes right past some random goblin village. We could just walk down the main road through the White Tortoise Woods."
Ulric: "Yeah, but the main road goes right past that *evil* looking tower."
Alina: "I don't think it will be occupied."
Shawel: "I think Ulric may be right, it even has an evil name! 'Gloom Slope Lookout'."
Ulric: "Yep, with a name like that it's PRIME nesting ground for dark forces."
>"What about these caves do they go all the way through?"
Shawel: "Yes, it's actually a clear tunnel through the mountain."
Alina: "Underground caverns are WAY more likely to have monsters than old towers."
Ulric: "Yeah but evil tower monsters are stronger than cave monsters. It's standard adventurer knowledge."

Kinda on the fence here.
I want to see that tower...
Thanks to Alina, it's definitely occupied...
Goblin village doesn't sound too tough...
We haven't engaged in much genocide recently...
Christof and Ulric wouldn't be able to melee from the raft...
We could flex our magic a bit...

Okay. Into the heart of darkness on raft it is!
>>
>"Let's go for the raft. It will be nice to be able to sit down instead of walking for miles."
Shawel: "Alright, once we get there I'll show you how to make the raft."

You pack up camp and after a short trek to the east you arrive at the Blue Stream and set up camp.
You begin working and the following day, with Shawel's instruction you finish construction of your raft using logs and rope.
(You lose 2 Rope from your inventory)
Shawel conjures a flat plane of ice and you all push the vessel into the river.
You all climb aboard and Shawel's Control Water spell creates a swift current, pulling the raft up the river.
Alina: "This is actually quite pleasant."
Shawel: "Hm hm~ fresh water transports are a highly underappreciated."
Ulric: "I see boats up ahead."
Sure enough in the distance you can see the small huts of the goblin village. A jetty extends into the water and a couple of small boats fishing in the middle of the water.

Goblins are little more than vermin, but we are out a ways and they may have healing potions. Ideally, we would just exterminate them to prevent them from someday spreading towards civilized lands. You direct Shawel to dock.
Gently the raft pulls up to the jetty. Shawel tosses a rope over a piling, tying up the boat.
Goblin: "Humans? What are you doing here? Heading to plunder the city of the dead?"
>"That's right. I was wondering if we could you barter with you goblins, we're running a bit low on food and supplies."
Goblin: "We do have a trader, but as far as food goes I don't think we have much to spare. we barely produce enough to pay tribute to the wicked Lobster-Bug-Snakes"

>"Lobster... Bug-Snakes..."
Goblin: "They're as taller than two goblins and heavier than 10! They have terrible claws and a tentacle mouth!"
Alina: "You mean 'Chuuls'?"
A row boat pulls into the jetty with two more fishergoblins aboard. Some other goblins from the village start wandering to the jetty out of curiosity of their new visitors.
Fishergoblin: "We leave out a big stockpile of food for them. Otherwise they'll eat us instead!"
He points to a sizable pile of wicker baskets, presumably fully loaded with food.
Goblin: "They live up stream, they'll block your way to the city of the dead!"
Fishergoblin: "Humans are strong, right? Please kill them all for us."
Goblin Farmer: "Yeah! Kill them all!"
Goblin Trader: "I'll sell you some adventurer stuff you can kill them with!"

They are abominations and should be stricken from this world, much like demons or vegetable-men. Goblins are almost folk by comparison. But it would be unwise and dishonorable to pledge to destroy them all before knowing their number. We may need to bravely run away, away!

Goblin: "You goblins agree to this deal?"
The goblins all murmur and nod in agreement.
You'll beat them, humans are strong! STRONGER than Lobsters-bug-snakes."

Slow goblin: "Me think there is.. 6!"
Goblin Farmer: "I've never seen 6 at a time, there's probably only 5 of them."

Slow goblin: "Me think: There's ZERO of them."
Ulric: "wow, This will be a pretty easy fight then."

Goblin Trader: "Here you go human friend. Anything on the carpet is up for grabs."
Shawel: "Where did you get this collection of foreign weapons?"
Goblin Trader: "I used to go to Aramoor all the time to sell our tribes' surplus. Sometimes I find stuff like this selling for cheap, so I buy and resell 'em to adventurers for profit. For the wealth of the tribe of course."

Scarlet Bow is almost always better, the target needs to have really high Armour Class and/or be very far away for the Leefside Bow to be better. There are lots of other factors but I don't think they're as important as hit chance in this comparison.

Thank you for taking such a great interest in my DEEP and COMPLEX combat system that I stole from the Fallout 2 game engine.

distance is arbitrary value defined by me based on how far I feel Alina is from her target at the moment, 5 is a value I normally use if Alina is drawn at her default size and both her and her target are visible in the confines of the 400x400px image. If you were in specific situations like trying to shoot the diviner with a gun on the battlements from a great distance away I would have made the distance value much higher. Alina has the high level Sniper feat which divides distance by 1.5.
Unequipping the Gauntlets and not having Christof's Leadership bonus would lose her 20 accuracy, she would still have a fairly good 115 (130 with the Leefside Bow). Equipping the Scarlet bow would reduce it to 85, but she fires three arrows which all roll to hit seperately. Her mediorce Perception score only gives her a +24 Accuracy bonus while ranged attacks have a -20 penalty by default.

>What? How much AC would someone need for the bows to do the same amount of damage?
depends on the parameters and I couldn't be bothered trying to do the math
