I quickly do all my homework in like FIVE SECONDS and then hug my dad, who is DEFINITELY at home and not at work, and then go to school! Where I see all my friends!

You investigate the suppressor runes in depth - they look pretty complexly written. It must’ve taken an insane amount of time to do this. Figures, they’d need something this strong to placate someone of your IMMENSE POWER. You first try putting a semicolon in along the circular writing, but the rune doesn’t seem to falter. Looks like your crayon doesn’t quite match the raw spiritual power of pure SPIRITIUM distilled into writing.

You’re interrupted in your examination. “Hey Victoria.” An almost smugly cheerful voice greets you. You glance up from the floor to face Rise and-.. yourself. This is the second time you’ve actually looked at yourself directly.
Rise slings an arm around.. you. You look uncomfortable. Rise smiles. “What do you think? Pretty good, right?” She waves to her other you. “It’s you! You’ve met her before. The big scary body horror monster. But I think Kasane pulls off a pretty good Morgan impression, right?” She jabs her sister.
“Ah-.. fufufufufu! Do NOT refer to me as MORGAN, mortal! It’s Victoria!” Your clone suddenly sinks into her role, pulling a pose and really nailing the laugh. It’s unnerving.

“She’s been covering for you while you’ve been acting like a stubborn brat.” Rise’s voice remains calm, but a bit of annoyance has clearly edged out her feigned niceties. “Your friends had zero doubts at school today. Katsu seemed to like you even more. Have you reconsidered my offer?”

“That rune is insurance. If I let you out now, then you could very easily overpower both myself and my guards. You can consider my offer in there.” Her eyes narrow. “I had the time to play nice earlier, but Ragyo wants results now. She’s breathing down my neck. If you could stop being so fucking selfish, then maybe we could be friends.”

Rise takes a breath to calm herself down, maintaining the steadiness of her cadence. “You’d better decide soon or I’ll have to turn to Plan B, which isn’t ideal. I’m doing my best to preserve you here Victoria, but if you don’t make the right choice within the next day, I’m going to be forced to turn to that option.” She sighs. “If you try to lie to me or escape, I will kill Katsu, Ryuko, and then your father in that order. I will exorcise your ghost pet and burn your house down. Think about it!”

She waves at you as she disappears, pulling her impostor sister along with her. “I’ll see you later.” She smiles.

You stare at the empty space. Looks like Kasane dropped something in the hall when she crouched down.

You do a cool little dance of excitement before donning your cloak and stepping hesitantly out into the hall. It’s a wide, empty area. You appear to be in the only cell in the hall. The corridor has two doors, one on either end. Rise and Kasane went out to the left.

You decide that Katsu’s the weakest to espers and since Rise will target him first, you need to get to him right away. You ready a PSYCHO DASH, pumping up your legs and breaking out into a full blown sprint to his house. Your surroundings stretch and blur around you as you push yourself to your limit.

You eventually find your way to his place - it’s a rather small house in a little suburban neighborhood. You rush up to his door, slamming his doorbell repeatedly until he finally opens the door, rubbing his eyes. He looks down at you, confused. It’s pretty understandable that he looks confused, because you’re drenched in sweat and gasping and clutching your chest.

“U-uh.. V-Victoria..?” He frowns, tilting his head. “Wh-why’re you h-here..? D-did you run here..?”

You stand and watch as Katsu folds in on himself. It’s a disgusting process. Something just- collapses him, forcing him into a mangled ball of flesh and muscle and bone. You’re frozen. The sound is indescribable. In just a few seconds, he’s gone. A thick pile lies on the floor in front of you.

Rise peeks her head out from behind a hall in the house. “Victoria!” She greets you cheerfully, a warm smile covering her face. “I told you what would happen, right?”

You are standing back in the prison cell. The bars separate you and Rise. The rune lies below you, ever strong. Your screaming dies in your throat.
“Surprise!” Rise smiles. “I mean-..come on. You didn’t think it’d be that easy, would you? Did you really think the exit was just down the hall? And Kasane would just leave the key out without me noticing? And like you wouldn’t be detected leaving ONCE? You’re smarter than that, Victoria.” She snorts, clearly amused by your stupidity.
“I- I-..” You look at your hands.
“But I guess the illusion was pretty realistic in some aspects. Katsu would die just like that if you actually tried anything. It’s like, SUPER painful.” Rise shrugs. “Just remember what happens if you try to escape!”

That seems to catch Rise off guard. She averts her gaze. “That’s not your problem.” Rise responds quickly. “You.. it doesn’t matter, anyways. “You” are going to join, whether you actually like it or not. Ragyo will.. appreciate me. That’s not the issue at hand. I’m giving you a chance here to save your own life and you’re acting like a fucking child. Why can’t you just accept my offer?”

You wake up later that night. Your eyes open groggily and you wipe a thin trail of drool away from your mouth. It’s pitch black. You don’t really have a bed, so you just kind of press yourself against a concrete corner and enjoy the floor, using your big black cloak as a blanket.

Sounds like someone’s walking down the hall. You hear Rise’s voice, but someone unfamiliar is in the mix.

“N-no. That’s not it.” Rise walks into view. Some sort of floating, glowing surface follows her. It’s floating too high to make out the specific features, but you can surmise who it is. You tighten up and keep your eyes shut. “Lady Ragyo, you need me. She likes me. Please. J-just give me until dawn. I know she’ll accept.”
“I certainly hope so. For your sake.” The voice rings out again. “Is that.. Victoria?”
“Y-yes. It’s her.” Rise stares at your “sleeping” form.
“Lovely. She’s perfect.” Ragyo responds, a bit of warmth creeping into her voice. You keep yourself still. “I can sense her strength from here. Of Asmodeus. And with training-.. one could only imagine.”
“.. Yeah.” Rise mutters under her breath. “Victoria’s great.”

The pair walk away from your cell, their voices growing quieter in the distance.

That’s right! Rise WILL probably harm one of your friends! Pushing all of your motivation into your fingertips and concentrating as hard as possible, you run your hand along the rune, trying to eke out any little bit of latent psychic energy into draining this..
It’s not working. No matter what kind of awesome shonen hero motivation you try to exude, you can’t just break some ancient esper art by feeling really hard. You slump against the ground. Aw, man. Rise might actually get to doing whatever she’s planning on doing.

As you rest your head against concrete, you feel an odd thumping from something else. Looks like something’s been interacting with the raw spiritual energy drawn on the ground. Feels like a heartbeat coming from your cloak. You feel around the fabric - looks like there’s a small pocket sewn on the inside. You reach in and pull something out, examining it in what little light is available.

Oh, yeah. This brings back some memories.

You look around for something to hang it on - while there’s a severe lack of furniture in the room to hang anything off of, the lock on your prison distends far enough for you to use. You hang it quickly, but realize you have nothing to bleed on. You used Akira previously and the Skull Ghost used Katsu, so-.. you raise your thumb up to your mouth and BITE, like you saw in an anime once. It’s actually really really super hard to bite through your own thumb and you start crying midway through, but you eventually end up with a very small cut on it. You drag it across the paper.

A burst of red light floods the room as a FAMILIAR GHOST looms over you. “Yeah? What do you-” He stops himself as he turns to face you, his eyes narrowing in recognition. “Oh, fuck me it's you.”

He’s cut off as flash of red light floods the room. A hooded figure stands in front of you - not Rise or Kasane. He places his hand on you and another flash of light blinds you.
You reappear in some sort of unending black room. It looks like it stretches out infinitely in all directions. Four figures stand in front of you. You can reasonably surmise who they are. Beneath you stands something that appears similar to the glowing esper circle from your prison cell, but it’s far larger with different inscriptions. Rise stands within it, but her fellow cult members stand just outside.

“Ah, there you are!” Rise smiles, clapping her hands together. “Right, then. Any last pleas? Cries for help from your friends?”

I could try to swap souls, but I’m not going to risk you getting access to my powers. I just need to make sure your soul is out of the way forever.”

A deafening tearing sound threatens to rupture your eardrums as a red vortex begins to spark and crack open in front of you just in front of the circle. “I’m going to throw you into the Manifold before taking your body!” She claps her hands together, giggling as the red glow enshrines her features. “Where trillions of wild spirits are going to tear you apart limb by limb while Ragyo welcomes and loves Victoria.”

You can already feel the pull on your soul from the portal. You glance around the black room, your grip on your physical body growing tenuous. Rise is shifting from one leg to another in excitement, wringing her hands. The cloaked figures look on quietly. Behind them, BIG GHOST peeks his head out from the floor hesitantly.

You’d attempt to PSYCHO DASH, but-.. It seems the circle is nullifying your powers just as well as its drawing your spirit into the Manifold. You stare at the giggling Rise. “You’ve REALLY gone off the deep end.” You murmur. However, you strike a COOL POSE anyways, using your hands to make AWESOME DARK LORD SIGILS. “I’ve already gone into and got out of the Manifold.”

You point at the BIG GHOST. He bursts up out of the ground and in a massive swipe, slams a hand into Rise. Rise hits into the ground like a ragdoll and her body begins to tumble into the vacuum-like vortex. “BUT HAVE YOU?!” You shout proudly.

Things turn to shit pretty quickly. Rise wraps her fingers around your ankle as you try to make a break for it and sprint into the darkness, causing you to trip and hit the ground. Her hand feels like a trap around your leg as she drags you into the Manifold right along with her. The cloaked figures go for Big Ghost, chasing him into the vast expanse of darkness, but one - Kasane, presumably - cries out upon seeing her sister getting sucked in and runs to you, grabbing your hand and trying to pull you in.

“You don’t know anything about me. Stop trying to be my friendI don’t need your help. Stop acting like you’re better than me.” Rise responds in a shaky tone, her grip around your ankle tightening. “You’re not!”

Rise wrenches you back, causing you and Kasane to tumble into the portal right alongside her.

You examine yourself. Your hair feels.. weirdly long. It’s never actually been this long. It’s getting in weird places. And you feel way taller, too. Looking down gives you vertigo. And looking down, you’re not wearing your winter school uniform. You’re wearing the cult cloak. You’re Rise.

You look around. A vast expanse of red surrounds you - waist length red “grass” coating the expanse of plains. The sky is cloudless and unending. You see another two figures standing in close proximity. Both are shorter than you. One looks around, confused, hunched over. The other is practically jumping up and down, her hands grabbing at random places.

“It worked. It worked. Itworkeditworkeditworked..” Rise whispers in a quiet, shaky, ecstatic tone as she grabs at her hair and chest wantonly. She glances back to look at you. She smiles in a way that you never smile. “Hey, Victoria.”

She raises her hand and an almost immensely massive burst of psychic energy soars from her fingertips, exploding into a vast array of energy in the sky.

You ignore Rise, taking a step toward Kasane tentatively. “Are you okay..?” You extend a hand toward her. Her spirits seem to lift considerably upon catching sight of you.
“R-Rise-..” She croaks out in a quiet but warm voice. She seems to be genuinely happy that her sister was worrying about her - at least before your body grips her shoulder, pushing her back.
“Not Rise.” Rise hisses from between her teeth. “The plan worked, Kasane.”
“A-ah. R-right-.. Okay.” Kasane still looks confused, grabbing her arm uncomfortably.

Rise lifts both of her hands, pointing them at you in a way that makes you feel EXTREMELY WARY. They glow red. You’re definitely about to get fucked. “S-SLEEP!’ You shout, staring directly at her. You feel a rush of psychic energy from somewhere in your eyeballs which is pretty gross.
She falters for just a moment, her hands sinking to her sides - but she’s visibly fighting, seemingly shaking off the command with ease. “I know how my power works, Victoria.” Rise smiles, her hands slowly flexing and glowing again. You take the opportunity to duck into the tall grass.

“.. Victoria?” Rise’s voice calls out as you scurry quietly and slowly through the grass. It’s WAY harder to crawl with how long these stupid arms and legs are. “Viiictoooorriiiiiaaaaaa.”

Oh shit. What are your body’s weaknesses again?.. McDonalds? Even if you had access to a 20 PIECE MCNUGGETS MEAL, right now Rise is murderous and could probably literally tear apart her own body in seconds with the power your body has.

Last time our body was SNATCHED, we still had all our old abilities. Can we still do things like Spirit Drain or Psycho Dash? Let's try Psycho Dash first, and if running works we should just scream interfering commands at Rise until we can get close enough to drain her.

You kind of quickly but carefully slow crawl away, making sure not to jaunt the grass around too much as you make your way across the ground. You keep going until Rise’s taunts grow quiet in the distance. You peek your head out of the grass to see that Kasane and Rise are relatively distant now and you can manage a breather. It’s a good thing you wear an eyepatch and your peripheral vision is horseshit.

You check your inventory. Under the cloak, Rise is wearing underwear. The cloak doesn’t appear to have any pockets. You’re essentially stuck with.. a cloak. Great.

You try using your powers, first trying to use your badass PSYCHO DASH to amp up your legs. You feel the slightest spark in your new limbs, but it’s nothing substantial. Might’ve boosted you for a second or two. Hardly enough to stop an angry psycho Rise with seemingly full control of all of your previously absorbed abilities. Looks like your powers are pretty severely dampened now that you’re in her body.

You take stock of your surroundings. While the plains seem to stretch out endlessly, there does appear to be a loose collection of extrusions that stand out from the otherwise unending flatness. Opposite those structures, in the far off distance, Rise is still screaming your name and Kasane is playing with the tall blades of grass.

You decide to keep the two in sight, circling around to get to those structures. It looks like Rise is still looking for you a little less actively, simply wading through the grass now and looking around. Kasane trails after her.

As you approach the structures, you find that it seems to be some kind of community. You figured that the apparent “super dangerous and wild” ghosts in the Manifold had to be somewhere. It’s an outcropping of random buildings from the real world that this dimension seems to have mashed together in some weird glitch. A few odd looking ghosts float hazily around it in the sky, and you figure there’s probably more in there.

You first attempt to astral project - you figure your spirit would probably blend into the ghost laden town a little better than some fleshy meat suit. Unfortunately, in a way that’s difficult to describe, it feels like your soul has gotten heavier in this plane of existence. Like it can’t just float away as easily as it did before, and now it’s just stuck in this bag of organs. While your telekinesis seems to work fine - albeit, a little less impressive - you’re unfortunately tethered to this bag of flesh while in the Manifold.

You decide the second best option is to simply sneak into the city, but it’s kind of difficult to figure out where to actually sneak. It doesn’t look like there’s roads or alleys or anything. The buildings are just plopped down randomly and haphazardly, some segmented into each other and others sunken into the ground. You generally try to stick to the outskirts as you look for a way deeper into the complex.

Stumbling down an alley that appears generally uninhabited, you almost immediately feel a LARGE PRESENCE looming over you. It leans in. It has a grossly familiar voice. “Don’t think I didn’t recognize you, esper. I could smell your sickeningly strong soul scent the second you came here.” It hisses in a reedy tone. “I see you’re taking full advantage of my powers in that brand new flesh suit of yours. A bit hypocritical, isn’t it?”

“So, how are you doing?" You remain calm, examining your surroundings. However, as you try to examine the alley, the spider simply repositions his body to remain your focus.
“Putting on a brave face, then.” The spider smirks. It’s so close that you can almost feel its presence, like it’s radiating electricity. “I’ve been doing just lovely since you dragged me out of that girl’s body and threw me back into this living hell of endless grass and remnants of the living world. What brings you here? That eager to die?”
“Actually, someone else put me here.” You do your best to maintain your cool, reminding yourself that you already killed this bug. “If you only smelled my soul scent, could you not-.. pick up one any of the ones that came in here with me?”
“I’d pick up on them just as well if their spirits were anywhere close to as putrid as yours is.” He retorts. “Perhaps you were hoping to hide from any spirits with grudges in that new skinsuit of yours?”
“I’m… actually, my body was.. stolen. I was going to ask if you could help me get it back.” You stare straight at the spider. “I’ll help you get out of the Manifold if you help.”

A disgustingly large skin overtakes the spider’s face, seemingly pulling the spider’s spectral flesh all the way back. “.. Do you think that you’re in the position to bargain here?” The spider sneers. “You can’t exorcise me here. You can’t kill me here. I’d regenerate in moments. But if I wanted to, I could pull apart that brand new body of yours in seconds and trap your spirit in the Manifold forever.”
The spider repositions himself, pointing an spindly leg at your chest. “Do you even know how to get out of the Manifold? Do you realize what we’d need? Or are you offering empty promises for my help?”

Exiting the Manifold is easier than entering, but still impossible for a spirit. It simply requires at least two living espers to concentrate their power into a certain point- anywhere, really, and opening a tear in this plane of reality back into the next. Of course, that would require a real flesh and blood human in the Manifold, which might occur a couple of times a century, and those humans would have to be psychics - even rarer. All you need is the cooperation of another psychic. Should be easy, right?”

“So, the other two espers that fell in with me, the members of the Oracular Order - uh, Kasane and Rise. They’re sisters. Rise is the one that stole my body.” You recount. “I think Kasane might be able to help me. She’s amenable. Rise is kind of a.. cult fanatic. Do you think maybe that’d work..?”
“You’d have to get Kasane away from Rise and convince her, but I doubt she’s going to be so willing to leave her sister. Humans get stupidly attached like that.” The spider begins to scuttle along the side of a building and away from you. “And if you want to get your original body back and not just consign Rise to the Manifold forever, you’d have to bring her along with you. Manifold doesn’t like letting spirits flow freely like in the real world, so Astral Projection’s a no-go. You’d have to wait until you were in the real world to switch.”
“Wh-what?” You frown. “.. Where are you going?:”
“Leaving. You can take care of this yourself. I gave you the info. That’s my part of the deal.” The spider’s disappearing now. “It’s a win-win for me. Either you end up dead or I’m back in the physical world again.”

The spider disappears over the roof of the building walling off the alley you’re in. You’re alone again.

But it's clear that psychic abilities are dependant on the existence of a soul but it's clear that the soul cannot fully act on its own therefore it needs a body to completely manifest its powers.

And the change in powers and strength could very be the result of the soul's leftover. As you remember, when the race course was trashed, there was some weak psychic "mana" scattered around as an aftermath of the intense fight. I theorize that Rise is currently quite powerful because of the time Morgan's soul spent inside her real body, storing quite a big amount of such mana. But without the proper soul (Morgan's Asmodeus one) the body's large storage will be depleted and it will be matched by Rise's own soul. But I have also become quite fond of the theory that the body is perhaps the factory of power while the soul is the source of ability. That should mean that Rise will slowly loose our abilities but keep the might. Quite the conundrum.

We could take a less immoral route. We could trade information, being that we say that there are three psychics needed to escape from this deep in the Manifold. If Rise kills us then her and Kasane are trapped in the void forever with ghosts who want them dead. Could explain we got out on our own in the past due to a loophole we weren't aware of.

This would let us get everyone out of the Manifold without harming anyone in the process. Would rely on Rise keeping her murderboner tucked away long enough for the escape to go through though.

Our first order of business should be figuring out how to get back into our old body. If all three of us leave the way we are now, we lose. You sneak up, using your AWESOME stealth skills to lurk through the grass towards the pair. Coming in close, you observe that Rise appears to have crashed from her manic episode. It looks like she tore off your eyepatch and bandages - presumably from frustration - while chasing you down, now sitting on the ground with a distant stare. Kasane shifts around uncomfortably in her robe.

“-re gonna get back home..? I-I mean, you said there wasn’t a way back e-earlier, so-..” Kasane trails off.
“Whatever. Ragyo will come for us when she finds out that we’re missing.” Rise mutters in response, averting her gaze from Kasane’s. “We’ll be fine.”

The thing that gets me is Ragyo is presumably a powerful psychic. But more importantly a super clever one. Does Rise really think she wouldn't recognize her soul in our body? Because really the super smart tricksy psychic lady won't have any way of detecting a hint of the reincarnation of Asmodeus? Like maybe not from across the planet but from five feet away? C'mon. Either I'm overestimating Ragyo's wily ways or Rise is really underestimating them. But surely she would be able to figure it out in short order that Rise isn't us.

Ragyo likely doesn't need "us", just someone with our powers, which seem at least partially tied to our body. So from Ragyo's point of view this might be good enough... or maybe even better than that, sice "we" might eventually end up getting ambitious and become a threat, while Rise is happy stay her blindly loyal bootlicker forever. Ragyo might have even planned for Rise to fail and pushed her buttons intentionally, to get rid of us as her main threat. Sacrificing minions to further her own goals sounds exactly like something that an evil cult leader would do.

But we can get out of here ourselves. I just need your cooperation.”

“Ragyo won’t have to know if I crush your windpipe.” Rise responds dully. The manic smile that distorted your features when she first got your body is gone - now, she just looks upset and shaky. “She- she won’t care if it’s actually you or not. She just wants your powers. She doesn’t actually care about you.”

She’s getting VERY close to finding you.
