You aren’t quite sure what to think or feel, outside the still-echoing gate of Scarlet’s front yard. You stand there for a few minutes with your mind blank, until Philonune tells you it’s time to go. The thought of breaking through the gate all to talk to Scarlet again comes up, but you suppress it. Philo’s right, you’re done here. Defeated, you head for the closest bus stop and take one that goes close to your place, because the subway is closed at these hours. On the way there, you mentally beat yourself up for not handling the situation correctly.

Scarlet was exaggerating the issue, being narrow-minded and pretending you’re a hopeless case only she can help – as if she can accomplish anything that can help you without a flame in this war.
You were being unfair to her, crushing her wish to help you out without even considering to tell her the real truths; who cares if she doesn’t have a flame, if Trent and a number of people you know are flameless supporters?

The divided lines of thinking do nothing to give you a solution, something that can remedy this situation. Not even Philonune’s words of encouragement seem to help you escape this spiral of doubts and remorse.

Ignoring the grimy bus with barely any people in it, you checked your phone foolishly to get your mind off of things. There is just one message from Yu Yan, informing you that they (herself and Nariko) are going to go to school by themselves tomorrow. Also, that you’ll have to wait longer to see her in her new uniform. She didn’t specify why, but you can assume it has to do with what just happened with your OG hobo an hour ago, since the message was sent around the time Nariko would get home… She’s safe though, so that’s good news.

Without thinking about it, you throw yourself onto your bed and embrace the sweet release of sleep. Tomorrow you’ll have a clean mind to assess the situation better. Maybe there’s a way here you aren’t seeing, something you’re being ignorant of…

It’s Monday, June 10th. Rubbing the sleep out of your eyes, you check your phone once again. To your surprise, there is a new message! It’s from Ruby – she’s finally moving in with you, and apologizes for the inconvenience! You reply to her accordingly and welcome her optimistically. Well, as much as one can by text. Also, you give her your address again just in case.

You should get moving to school… Right?

What do you do?

>Stay home. No need to expose yourself out there just yet. You need time to think, rest, and plan.
>Go to school. You’re responsible and don’t want to fail your regular duties. Normalcy will give you stability.

Votes:

Votes are counted until 25 minutes have passed. This rule doesn't apply to the last reply of the day.
Votes that require a dice roll are counted until 15 minutes have passed, so we can speed up the process. Rolls are counted until 10 minutes have passed, so be prepared!

(NEW) Dice Mechanic:

We always roll 1d100s!
Since most people weren’t happy with the system of averaging top four rolls, we’re using best of 2/3/4 depending on the attribute a prompt requires. If Johnny is a genius and it’s a Knowledge based roll, he gets more rolls (Max. 7)! If he sucks, he gets less dice (Min. 2)!

When asked for rolls, I will specify how many you’re going to get. Rolling begins after it’s asked.

Rolling over a 95 is a critical and ignores all other rolls! In the same vein, rolling 5 or under means a critical failure (only for hard rolls and above).

The difficulty of the roll is tied with the effectiveness of the action. In other words, the harder the option the better the result!

Don’t forget that at the end of the day, this is a story-driven quest! What the prompts are describing is more important than the difficulty of the rolls, for results in a fight.

Again, rolls are only counted when they are posted within ten minutes of being asked, so watch out!

As much as you hate doing it, you need to go to school. A routine will give you the stability you need in a trying time like this! Besides, you don’t know what kind of wacky stuff is waiting over there now, what with the other school merging with good ol’ Green Foothill. You don’t really care, and you have strong negative opinions regarding school, so this is all mental filler anyway. It’s there to keep your mind away from worse thoughts while you get ready.

Before leaving, you message Ruby about what time to expect her arrival. She promptly responds that she should be there near 7:00 PM. It’s more than enough time for you to get back and prepare for your guest… who technically happens to not be a hobo. Also, you shoot another message to the Motley Crew group chat to ask if anyone is computer savvy enough to help you out… with some good ol’ fashioned computer hacking! Unlike with Ruby you don’t get much of a response, sans Nina telling you she’ll start looking into it. Figures. You’re not one of them anymore, why should they continue pretending they care about you? You already know you won’t be relying on them much for your real goals in this war.

With an absolutely awful grimace on your face, a backpack full of whatever you felt you needed, and the determination of an obese man changing TV channels, you’re ready to tackle this day of duty! It feels like it’s been a good while since you went to school. If only things stayed that way… but most good things never last long, do they?

Public transportation has never been so sweet to ride on! Or it would have been sweeter, if it weren’t for everything you’ve seen on the way there. There is a considerable lack of people taking the subway or even walking on the streets anywhere near the station, and all of them look stressed and withdrawn. Some shoot furtive glances at the closest people around them every now and then, clutching at their belongings just a bit too much, or walking a bit too hurried. The recent events going on in your country and the very city you live in have shaken up life on all levels. The city’s population is less than a quarter of what it used to be, and despite everything on the outside remaining intact, there’s a sense of desolation hanging in the air. Maybe this will be your new normal from now on? It’s started being everyone’s normal already…

Outside of the school gates, you can see a bunch of kids wearing conspicuous purple school uniforms walking inside. The rest of your kind and some of the teachers are redirecting the out-of-place students to the school auditorium. It seems Principal Conti has something in store for you all…

Inside, you rapidly skim your view over the new students. There’s so many new people here, so many fresh faces, that you feel there has to be someone specific here. Your instincts fail you, and neither you nor Philonune see anyone worth noting. The chatter between the students is loud, and there’s more than one strained note trying to make themselves heard in the commotion. Teachers, new and old, are trying to calm the air for this hot mess to get underway.

Mr. Rodenhall finds you standing up like a dumbass and drags you to an empty seat. They are using the first-come first-served approach with regards to seating arrangements, from what you managed to hear of him. Before long, you find yourself surrounded by an ocean of purple. Cool…

You wanted to give the place another look to spot your friends, but the lights go out rows at a time. The show is about to begin…

Mr. Conti stands on the podium and begins his speech! He’s talking about the recent incidents with the city and the migration of people out, without addressing the real elephant in the room. The multiple purple elephants in the room, grapes of people clustered about. Not even the pun in your head does anything to offset the tension, the feeling of serious problems right here in the vicinity…

The student seated at your left gently elbows you in the arm. You turn to spot a purple-uniformed girl with short black hair avoiding your gaze, but looking at you. Locking eyes with you, her face starts to grow red and her smile becomes a bit nervous. This shy girl clearly wants your attention for some reason, perhaps to ask you something…? Her friends are seated around in her direction, talking among themselves and saying things you can’t quite catch. Their eyes are on the two of you, and you can’t pay attention for too long to make out anything of their expressions.

What do you do here?

“What’s wrong?” You whisper in response. Drawing too much attention won’t be good.
“Hi-i… I-I w-w-was wondering, if y-you could show me and my-my f-friends the place around, since we are—” Suddenly the girl starts getting hiccups. It’s like a bird chirping. “I-I’m s-sor—!” A great hiccup strangles the apology!

You try to get her to calm down, but the hiccups get even worse! Some of the students around turn to watch what’s going on – making the poor girl panic even more! This is bad! She’s staring down at the ground, trying to keep her head steady…

“D-Do you want some water?” You start excavating your bag for some. Sometimes you bother to bring an emergency bottle with you, and you’re sure you have one today.
“I’m- *hic*! so- *hic*! So— *hic*! –rry! *hic!” She’s a tomato girl now. You think you’re seeing tears, but you don’t think they are related to her hiccup problem…
“Ms. Yeong. Get up.” A teacher that looks more like a plumber than anything else orders the poor girl in a curt voice. He’s beyond annoyed, and he makes no effort to hide it. “Follow me.”

The girl bolts straight up and runs towards the teacher, though not before you were able to hand her the bottle! You see them both marching away from the auditorium, the hiccupping continuing and drawing more stares as they go…

“Oh, poor Liu.” The girl sitting next to the now empty seat says. “Green boy was too much to handle for her.”
“He’s sweet. Good thing there are plenty of hot guys around here as well, so we don’t all have to fight for one.” The other girl besides her responds, chuckling to herself. Wait, what did she say?!
“Uh, I think he’s listening to us…”
“That’s fine! Let him get a taste of what’s to come!”
“Be quiet over there!” Mr. Rodenhall silences the two girls whispering.

…From that point on, you started listening more intently to Mr. Conti’s speech. He’s now talking about the new students and how they are going to open up that old building for new classrooms, despite already losing a bunch of students who have already left the city. The plan is to incorporate Purple Rose students into what’s happening here, and ask every Green Foothill student to be welcoming and guide the new students, if possible.

He ends the speech with reminding you all about the N.U. Forces again, to be nice with each other, and that together we will move as one or some other stupid slogan bullshit. There was a math pun too, but you won’t acknowledge it in this narration.

...

You feel like you missed something important in there. Oh well, it doesn’t matter… Probably.

Back to your classroom, the place feels emptier than you remembered. Hell, you even lost whoever was sitting next to you. And yes, Scarlet and Terry are still here. They are not talking to each other, in fact – they are busy talking to other people. They are going to introduce the new students once the classes start properly in a few minutes.

“Hey, glasses.” A girl sits in front of you. Something about her feels familiar. “Don’t look at me like you don’t know me, I’m Sammi.”
“Yeah, I remember you.” Barely. The last time you saw her was making her get some white knight guys to chase down Howie for being an alleged pervert. Good times!

“Then act like you do.” She pouts. Oh yeah, she’s Scarlet’s friend too. “Tell me what you did to my girl.”
“Excuse me?”
“When she looks like that, someone baaaaaaaaad happened to her – and I have a hunch it’s about you.” Sammi is being very confrontational. “So start talkin’. I need to know what happened to cheer her up.”

“Everyone back to your seats! I know there are plenty of empty ones now, but we have a protocol for a reason!” Mr. Rodenhall appears and clacks an eraser on the board.
“Shit, send me a text or somethin’. I don’t need to hear, I just need to know.” Sammi grabs one of your textbooks and writes her number very fast. Great, now the book is ruined. She leaves without even looking at you. What a rude girl…

The new students begin to flood inside the classroom. There are a lot of them! Hell, it’s almost like half the class was outside all along…

What do you do?!

You decided it’s best to solve this by yourself and will keep this information from Sammi. Now time to hear those introductions!

Yep, there is a lot of them. You really did pay attention to every single one of them, but the sad fact in life is that some people stick out and some don’t. You don’t and never did, so you really don’t feel bad about forgetting these poor bastards. Now, the most relevant ones are as follows:

-A fat friendly guy named Duncan Ewing. He used to be the president of the student council in Purple Rose. He’s now sitting next to you.

-Gwendoline Lecocq, a girl who looks like a complete troublemaker. Someone Sammi wished she could look as intimidating as. Nobody really seems to like her one bit.

That’s it. 2 out of… about 27. That’s immensely disappointing. Well, just because the rest don’t stand out, doesn’t mean they are assholes or anything!

On second thought, perhaps you shouldn’t be so harsh with Sammi using the cold tactic of dismissing her, or by being rude. She’s only looking out for her friend, like Yukika did in her own way. You send her a message that you will deal with Scarlet herself when the time comes later, and you worded it as friendly as you could. She sent you a slew of angry emojis instead. The nerve of this girl!

Classes went quiet after that. There is some kind of tension rising up between everyone, as if nobody wants to make a ruckus out of respect to the other side. The image that comes up in your head is of two different armies watching each other without attacking, weapons at the ready. How long will this peace last before the storm hits, or will there not be a storm at all? Who knows?

It’s time for lunch. The purples are talking amongst themselves and don’t seem very open to the rest of you. Weird, because you “greens” aren’t exactly working as a pack as of now. It’s not like it really matters though; you don’t give a shit about this school or almost anybody in it. It can all go to hell for all you care.

Like previously said, it’s time for lunch.

What now?

>Approach the purples as a friendly neighbor does! No, NOT the type who attacks them with Philonune this time. Geez…
>Direct approach Scarlet and resolve your issues with her! Or her issues with you! Or whatever is eating away at her this badly!
>Search for the girls! Yu Yan and Nariko should be around, right? Find them and eat with them!
>There is someone you need to deal with first before anyone: Howie. He should be around.
>Chill and just eat lunch. No need to stress yourself just yet, leave things for later! You have time, right?
>Go eavesdrop on the teachers! You need information on whatever’s going on, and they’re it!
>Write In.

“Hello, guys. How is it going?” You are probably the first person in this classroom to cross the ‘no man’s land’ to say hi. All the purples are looking at you in silence but with no hostility. So far so good.
“Hey man, I’m doing good. I’m Duncan by the way.” The fat guy gives you a warm welcome and holds his hand out with an eager yet curious expression.
“I’m Johnny, nice to meet you.” You shake his hand without wasting a second! “We are sitting next to each other in class, so I thought it was about time to say hi.”

“Indeed. It’s so quiet in here I found it difficult to break the ice. I can feel the tension merely by standing here. Are everyone in Foothill just this… quiet?” The man ponders, looking outside the window.
“Yeah, no. I don’t think anyone knows how to react when suddenly half their class is new and the other half is gone. It’s just how it is.” You shrug. “We’re not that bad, I think. Do you guys know where the cafeteria is? I can help you with that.”

“I won’t speak for anyone. But I surely would appreciate it if you show me the way. Hehe.” Duncan seems excited for the prospect of food.
“Sure. Anyone who wants to go, follow me!” You call out to all the purples in the classroom, walking towards the door. Now that you notice, the purples were listening to you talking with the fat guy the whole time. Some of them begin taking their stuff to follow you out.

“Hold the fuck up.” The delinquent girl demands you to stop! Gwendoline wants trouble. “Who the fuck are you?”
“Like I said I’m Johnny. Nice to meet you.” Better to be polite with someone you don’t know.
“Don’t give me that crap.” The girl folds her arms. “Who’s really in charge here?”
“Are you asking who our president is? I think he’s still hospitalized…” Thanks to Trent.
“I mean the REAL leader here. None of that pussy ass shit you spoutin’ now.”

“Ehem, let me speak for her!” Duncan cuts in the conversation! “Yes, I’m sure everyone here is up to date with the whole situation between the schools. You know, the fights.” He rubs his hand on the back of his head, a bit apprehensive suddenly. “We’re the Purple Spikes, you’re the Green Shield. Tulip is Blood Knuckles, Echinacea is Bear Claw, and so on. We need to know the name of the leader of your… coalition, so we can sign a peace treaty. Well, not me specifically, but you understand.”

“What…?” You’re somewhat confused. “You mean… like gang battles?
“Precisely.” Duncan brushes dust off of his uniform, rather self-conscious. “I, for one, don’t care particularly, but—”
“I don’t think anyone here cares or knows about this crap.” You interrupt Duncan, feeling a bit put out by this reveal. “And I think it says a lot about you guys that you do.”

“I knew Green Shield was shit, but really?” Gwendoline is surprised and excited for some reason.
“I believe so.” You scratch the back of your head. “I wouldn’t know about wins or losses or whatever.” You did fight against Trent when you met him for the first time, and back then he was attending Red Tulip. Henry was also in that one other fight with the Red Tulips when he got his partner, from what you remember of him telling his backstory. Also something about the Yellows? A lot has happened since then and your memory might be a little fuzzy.
“Then we’re fuckin’ takin’ over this shit! Guys! Let’s fuckin’ GO!” Gwendoline rallies her small troop of… seven people. “Thanks, handsome! Your shitty school belongs to us now!” They leave the classroom in an uproar to… who knows where. Maybe the cafeteria? Even delinquents have to eat, and it is lunchtime.

You’re left with the Peaceful Purples. You have no idea what consequences this event will bring in the future, but you don’t really care right now.

“Should we go?” You ask the rest. They seem to be used to that Gwendoline girl doing things like this, judging by their lack of strong reactions.
“Please!” Duncan looks more relaxed now that those guys are gone.

And so, you had a peaceful lunchtime with your new classmates! They are pretty chill bunch, more than you expected. Hell, some of your old classmates joined in too, and everyone had great time together! Joking, laughing, eating! Even Terry joined! The great absentees were Scarlet’s group of friends and the Purple Spike troops.

Hilariously, after lunch, the little troop that went out seeking trouble are back at the classroom with their stomachs empty and their hands clean. They lost themselves in the school because they weren’t used to the layout, and didn’t accomplish anything. With the cafeteria closed, they are starving… for food, not for a fight. It’s quite sad. You have some leftovers from lunch you could potentially give them…

Discreetly, you hand your lunch leftovers over to one of the hungry Purple Spikes, the one closest to you. He stares down at it in a sort of confused suspicion, not grabbing it. You assure him it’s something for his troop to eat since they are hungry – and to share it. The dumbstruck guy grabs the little container and says nothing, continuing to stare at the meal…

“Psst…! The fuck are you doing?! What are you holdin’?” Gwedoline whispers loudly to catch the poor guy’s attention. Too bad she’s doing it from all the way at the back of the classroom, and everybody probably heard her.
“N-Nothing…” He whispers back in an actual whisper. The gang leader glares at the poor guy with such an intensity, he corrects himself. “T-This guy wanted to give you this… It’s food…” He tries to make the container pass around the class towards Gwendoline.

She darts her narrowed eyes towards you! She just doesn’t trust you, huh? Screw that; you said what you really thought about her petty teenage gang fights. If she’s going to hold a grudge over that, that’s on her and not you. At this point, you turn your back on her and pretend to listen to your classes. It isn’t long before the classroom is filled with conspicuous munching noises coming from the back.

“Miss Lecocq, it doesn’t matter what school you’re in, eating during classes is not permitted…” Your new science teacher caught her red-handed! “You either stop and leave it to later, or wait outside.”

The delinquent stands up and moves to leave with the food in her hands. From what you glimpse of it, there’s about a quarter of it left. Some of the members of the Purple Spikes try to leave with her, but the teacher shuts them down! Before leaving the room entirely, she glares back at you from the doorway, then slams it behind her.

“If I were you, I’d be careful with what you’re doing.” Duncan whispers to you after the scene plays out. “You might be playing a dangerous game here…”
“She was supposed to share…” You lament the real problem! At least she liked it enough to eat it all herself… but then again, everybody who eats your food ends up liking it.
“I believe that can be fixed.” Duncan pulls some sweets out of his bag and hands them to the same guy you gave the food initially. The guy actually reacts to Duncan’s action, nodding wordlessly and turning to hand the sweets to others in arms’ reach. You see the food moving around the room, occasional looks coming your way. A few people even smile…

That’s good, right?

After the little food incident, it came to your knowledge that Gwendoline is probably going to pass the rest of the evening in detention.

That’s bad, right?

Now classes are over, and you know what you must do. Finding Scarlet before she leaves, you approach and ask her for some of her time. After a few seconds of tense silence and checking her phone, the troubled redhead obliges. Before you can sigh in relief. she asks you to wait for her at the rooftop because she needs to go to the bathroom. You accept her reasonable conditions and walk away, though not without noticing her group of friends talking about something with her. Maybe she was buying some time for her to prepare to talk with you? Or maybe her friends are just that nosy? Probably the latter, if Yukika was any indication… Not that there’s anything wrong with that…

Heading upstairs to the rooftop, you try to clear your mind by breathing in and out slowly. Last night was too emotionally charged, and both of you ended up somewhat carried away. Now that you have a chance to make up for your blunder, you have to go into it calm and prepared. Any misunderstanding or escalation could cause a repeat of last night’s events – something you genuinely want to avoid at all costs.

What’s the plan?

>Apologize for being harsh yesterday, but tell her she needs to understand the issues you have are not something she can help with, or that you can tell her about.
>Even if there is little chance she’ll actually believe you, tell her the truth. Then tell her you cannot be friends with her anymore, as you don’t want to put her in danger.
>Even if there is little chance she’ll actually believe you, tell her the truth. Then tell her there is little she can help you with, and that’s why you hid the truth.
>Lie to her and invent some kind of problem she can help you fix. Maybe mix it with some real events? This sounds like something that can get out of hand fast though…

Your resolution is absolute! You know exactly what to say! Now you only have to wait for Scarlet to come here…

As you keep watching the dilapidated city from the rooftop, you hear the door to the stairs opening. Scarlet has finally arrived. The moment of truth is near. The troubled girl, on her end, hasn’t changed her attitude since your request. There’s no phone in her hands this time; only a lost expression you feel bad to see on her.

“Hey.” You wave her over to you.
“Hey, Johnny…” The afflicted girl says once she’s there. “W-What do you want to talk with me?”
“It’s about yesterday.” You get right to the point. No sense dodging around it. “I need to tell you the truth. But please, I beg you not to tell anyone and I mean it.”
“The truth?” Scarlet is already confused. The confusion doesn’t last long, as you see understanding dawn in her eyes. “What, are you going to tell me what’s wrong with you?”

“Yeah. It’s a long story. A long shitty story…”

You begin explaining Johnny Ando’s odyssey, a long tale about the multidimensional war you’re partaking in with a bunch of people and demons and whatnot. As the words come out of your mouth plus Scarlet’s constant reactions, this whole fucking thing sounds ridiculous! Why does the truth have to be so absurd…?!

“…So yeah. If it’s not me, I don’t think anyone is going to try to save the world. They’ll just let it end for all they care. And I’ve come too far to let things fall apart like that.”
The dumbfounded redhead stares at you for some long seconds without muttering a sound. There’s something profoundly sad and hurt at the same time in it. “A-Are you telling me the truth for real? Because these are not the types of jokes I missed from you, Johnny.” She shuffles in place, uncomfortable.

“Scarlet Argyle, this is nothing but the truth. I know it’s hard to believe, even to imagine. But it is!” You try to convey how serious you are as best as you can. “And if you want me to prove it, I will. Right here and now.”
“Alright. I want to see you try!” All the hesitation and doubt is blown away as she folds her arms, meeting your challenge! “Go ahead, Johnny! I’m ready.”

Wordlessly, you reach out and invoke Philonune, commanding him to grab your phone and hold it. “Look at my phone! My partner is the one holding it right now. That’s why it’s floating!”
“…So? My mom can do that.”

“What?! She has powers too?!” Another flame user you didn’t know about?!
“It’s a magic trick!” Oh right, Scarlet is not that bright sometimes… “Anybody could just use tiny wires and weird physics tricks to do that, right?”
>>
File: 1821.png (122 KB, 600x515)
122 KB

“B-But can it go this high?!” You make Philonune crouch on the ground and jump really high! Must be about a floor or two, though you can’t make out exact vertical distance from down here. Philonune quickly falls back down before stopping at his usual floating height.
“…I mean, you’re pretty good at this.” Scarlet is completely oblivious, nodding at you. “I guess I was wrong when I said you gave up all your hobbies, huh?”

“Fuck it. Should’ve just started with this…” You mutter to yourself, which Scarlet probably heard. Recalling Philonune to flame form, you turn yourself invisible! Or is it cloaking, like the alien hunter from that one movie? “Okay, happy now?”
“…H-How did you do that?!” Scarlet is amazed, but the type someone would be when enchanted by a magic trick. This isn’t some movie special effect, come on!
“I just explained to you, it’s my superpower…” It would be horrible if that line came out as whiny as you thought it did. You’re not some middle schooler, or someone who acts like one! Shaking the thought aside with some relief, you walk towards her and stop. “I’m standing in front of you right now.”

Part of you idly notes that you felt no backlash or side effects from walking at a regular pace with your power active. Your backlash was also very delayed the time you ran through the sewers. This must be those marshmallows at work then… Cool.

Rubbing her eyes for a few seconds, Scarlet looks here and there, trying to figure out where your voice is coming from. “W-Woah…” The mesmerized redhead reaches a hand out into the air, starting for a moment when her fingers touch your unseen chest. “So cool…” She moves her hands over your shirt a little, leaning in closer to try to see something. Then her eyes suddenly squint hard into a cringe, and a weird blend of shock, disgust, and what you think is horror comes up on her face. “Wait, what? What is…?”

“W-Where are you touching?! I told you I’m not ready for that type of relationship!” You joke, trying to really sound taken aback.
“I’M SOWWY!” Scarlet stumbles away, blushing really hard. The lisp is back too!
“Hehe, I’m joking.” You turn yourself visible again. “If I stay too long invisible my head starts to hurt, and I think people get weird side effects if they see me moving with it on, or if they’re too close when I’m like that…” You absently put a hand on your shirt, where Scarlet was rubbing it. Felt kinda nice… “Again, it’s not a magic trick.”

“Woah, woooah, wooooooah!” Scarlet is lost for words. “This is… well… I dunno. Just… holy shit!
“It is what it is.” You shrug. “It really is cool though, yeah.”
“I have so many questions…”
“Can’t imagine otherwise. I’ll try to answer what I can.”

“B-But what can a guy like you do against all of this…?”
His best. That’s what.” You can’t help standing a little straighter and taller as you say this.
“Pffft… hahahah…!” Scarlet starts laughing uncontrollably until her knees give up, crouching down by the rooftop fence and clutching at the metal to hold herself steady. It’s rather like Trent at the Batting Center yesterday.

“A-Are you okay?”
“I don’t know if I’m going to be! Haha!” Scarlet is acting strange, even for you. “But I’m relieved in a sense.”
“Well, now you know why I’ve been so stressed lately…” You shrug again.
“Yeah, I get you now.” Scarlet smiles as you help her stand up again. “How do you even live with something like this going on? Does anyone else know? How can I help you?”

“I told you that last night. It’s not easy. And yeah, I’m getting some support so you don’t have to worry about that. Can’t tell you from who though; I don’t want to violate their privacy or anything.”
“I’m assuming Amelia and the girl from yesterday are in the know, right? Maybe Trent too…”
S-She’s sharp! How?! “That’s for you to guess.”

“And those fights? Those bears were other people with powers? That’s why you were hospitalized so frequently? Wait, was Yukika one of them too? W-Wait, you fought Yukika too!” Everything’s starting to click into place inside Scarlet’s mind. “That explains all the weird shit happening lately, doesn’t it?”
“I… I suppose so…?” You scratch the back of your head.

“My god, Johnny. What exactly were you going through this whole time?” Scarlet steps closer to you, concern on her face. “I’m terrified just thinking about it… I really can’t make out something about this…”
“Is that bad? To tell you the truth, I wanted to leave you out of this entirely because I didn’t want to terrify you, or worry you, or put you in danger…” You laugh a little, feeling a weight not there on your shoulders anymore. “Some good that did, huh?”

“I get it… But how do you even defend yourself from something like this? Shouldn’t we normal people leave the city? There are invisible demons out there, and people using them to beat up or kill others!” The redheaded girl puts her hands on your shoulders, more desperate than concerned now. “How can everyone keep this quiet?! I don’t get it. I don’t get it at all, Johnny!”

“…I don’t know.”
“Johnny, why are you keeping this a secret? A-Aren’t people’s lives in danger…?”

You need to calm Scarlet down somehow… If that is even possible…

How do you respond?

>“I don’t know what I can do, Scarlet. If I go around exposing the war to everybody I meet, there’s no way I won’t become a target. And now with the city emptied out as much as it is, there’ll be fewer things to stop anybody from singling me out.”
>“They are, but there isn’t much I can do but help those I can. If I don’t fight back and win this thing, then everybody will be in danger or worse. I know some of the threats in this war, but I haven’t been able to do much against them. Yet.”
>“All I know is the biggest accidents have nothing to do with what’s happening with this whole war. Secrecy is one of the most important aspects, and daily life wasn’t supposed to be any different.” Maybe this is something you should go talk with Constance and the other judges…
>“That’s impossible. I can’t save everyone, Scarlet. Nobody can… If it helps, I’m always looking out for everyone I know all the time. It’s why I was holding back so much for you, why I didn’t want to let you in on all this. But don’t worry, I have ideas to get things done..”

It's better this way anyhow, there's a reason governments aren't completely open with it's people, mass panic will cause even more chaos and death. “B-But there must be a way to save innocent lives… If we tell people maybe they…” Scarlet is having a mild panic attack. You grab her shoulders, seeing no other option.

“I swear I’m going to put a stop to all of this. But it’s not that simple, Scarlet. There's too many uncertainties to consider before even trying that. First of all, there's the issue of even getting people to not think I'm just crazy. “Woah, no need for petty insults…”
“Like your friend Trent would say, I call it as I see it.” Scarlet’s face is a mixture of terror and determination. Determiterror! “I think we should talk to these Judge guys, give them a good scolding for being idiots and change the dumb rules they have…” Who put her in control?!

We already lost Osgood and Bradford. Johnny's been close to dying more than once. Nariko lost her memory once. Yu Yan was a terrorist mastermind before getting mind wiped.
If Scarlet wants to help Johnny, what she should do is keep herself safe. The last thing Johnny needs is for another friend to get fucked up or die before their time fighting some godforsaken demon war.

You chuckle wryly, unable to help yourself. “Funny you said ‘dying like a martyr.’ Just a couple of days ago, a good friend of mine did exactly that. He even had powers too, and those didn’t save him. Quite the opposite.” You’re reminiscing of the events of Judgment Day again, with him dying in your arms after his persistence power ran out. Scarlet tenses up immediately, not knowing what to say to you.
The tension doesn’t last long before she points right at you. “T-This only me-means you need more help! All the m-more reason for me to be here for you!” Scarlet is obviously afraid, but her determination triumphs over her fears
“You know, you have a nice idea. Follow me, we’ll talk to them – it won’t be dangerous.” Time to visit the only Judge you know! You give Scarlet a warm smile, making her relax a little for once.

“Okay, let’s go meet this Judge person. Where are we going?”
“To the clinic. That’s where she is.” You start walking towards the rooftop’s entrance, hearing Scarlet walking behind you.

As you exit the school, Scarlet feels the need to address something…

“This friend of yours. Who was it?”
“Do you really want to know?” You say to her without looking.
“Yes. If I don’t know what you went through, I don’t think I would be fit to help you.”
“You met him once with my help… I don’t think you like him much anymore. Sound familiar?”

Osgood?” Scarlet stops walking.
“The one and only Comeback Prince himself.” A vivid image of a smug Osgood posing during the last Poker Night flashes in your mind…
“Woah… Wow… It’s so strange; everything retroactively makes sense…”

“What? Us being friends? Was I that ugly?” You joke, breaking the sullen mood you were in. You were a completely different person before Handsomeness level 4, after all!
“No, you weren’t actually a coward.” Scarlet shakes her head hard. “I-I don’t mean to disrespect you! I’m so sorry…”
“Don’t be. I don’t blame you.” You look up above, seeing the sun not quite setting yet. This reminds you you still need to deal with Ruby later, so you need to do this quickly!

During the trip on the subway, Scarlet asked to clarify a lot of her questions, so she can know to what extent the war works and everything. The torrent of questions doesn’t bother you one bit, you trying to give as much context as you can safely provide. It feels nice to be open about what you’ve been dealing with with her, almost relieving; it’s something you didn’t know would help…

On the way into the clinic, coincidentally, you met up with Dr. Calamity himself! He didn’t look busy, so you asked him if you could visit Constance right now. The jolly yet creepy old man was happy to let you make an impromptu appointment with your favorite mummy, and he decided to accompany you to her room.

Scarlet and Dr. Calamity know each other from the time Yukika was hospitalized in the old Calamity Clinic (may it rest in peace). They are not exactly close, but they are cordial to each other – well, the doc is being friendly, but Scarlet is not used to his mannerisms. She maintains her respect through her mild discomfort. It was weird but fun little time.

You arrive at Constance’s room, and there she is reading a good book! It’s been a long time since you found her all by herself, but she’s not the same quiet, traumatized little girl you remember meeting and using a phone to talk to. The thought of how that came in useful with Ajna after all this time doesn’t escape you. The doctor parts ways with you all once you get inside, but not before a little exchange of words with his patient. Soon after, only the three of you are here…

“Hey, Constance. How’s it going?”
“Hey, Johnny!” The cheerful Constance smiles, but then notices Scarlet in the room and gets visibly uncomfortable. Scarlet herself is a little weirded out by Constance’s appearance too… “W-Who is she…?”

“Constance, this is Scarlet. Scarlet, this is Constance. We came to visit.”
“N-Nice to meet you…” Your new redheaded helper waves a shaky hand at the volleyball head.
“Hmm…” Constance doesn’t react positively. “Did I do something…?” She looks at you.
“Huh?! No! Of course not! Haha…” Scarlet tries to play it cool.

“This is the person I wanted you to meet, Scarlet. She’s one of them.”
Scarlet looks from you to Constance and back. “S-She’s the Judge?! T-They gave a monster to a little girl?!” The statement comes out of left field to you. So that’s what Scarlet is fixating on here.
“Yeah! I would be dead otherwise!” Constance plays it off with her mummy charm!
“I… don’t know what to say…”

“Constance is a very good girl, so don’t worry about it. Right?” You smile at the little girl.
“Mhm!” She smiles back. Adorable. Absolutely adorable. So adorable that Scarlet is beginning to relax…

“Well Scarlet, you had suggestions didn’t you?” You try to get directly to the point of this visit.
“Suggestions?” Constance is a little bit confused.
“R-Right… You’re one of the Judges, right?” Scarlet gets closer and sits on Constance’s bed. You drag a chair for yourself.
“Mhm! Please don’t tell anyone bad!” Constance cheerfully confirms what it is known. “Then they’ll come kill me! They tried a bunch of times now!”

The expression that flickers on Scarlet’s face is a mixture of deep grief and indignation. Constance being so flippant about almost dying so much must have got to her. “Y-You have some say in what’s happening, right?” Scarlet refocuses on her questioning, probably making sure her efforts aren’t futile.
“Mmm… Kinda? I can’t do much from here…” Constance holds her arms out, gesturing at the bunker room.
“But you set the rules?”
“The other Judges did!” Constance nods. “I can only contact them at night while they are sleeping.”

“Yeah, Johnny told me something about that.” Scarlet now looks fiercely determined. “The idea of your job is to keep normalcy if possible, right?”
“Yep!” Constance nods again. “Though… some of the Judges weren’t too happy after what happened the other day.”
“Wait, you had a meeting?” This you gotta hear!
“We have one once a week, to check if everyone is still alive.” Constance never told you about that. “You weren’t supposed to know that, but Athelone can’t tell me what to do anymore! I’m my own person now!”
“Try not to disobey too much, okay? We don’t know what the consequences can be.” You headpat her bandaged head. “But good for you, Constance. I’m proud of you.”
“Mhm!” Constance blushes under your hand, smiling brightly. “Thank you Johnny!”

“I have some suggestions for you and your other Judges. Do you mind if you hear me out? I want to save as many innocent lives as we can.” Scarlet asks Constance, all business.
“I don’t mind! We were supposed to get ideas for new rules anyway. I know they don’t count on me so much, but I want to help! I’m a Judge too, so they still hear me out!”
“Right… You’ll need something to write this on.” Scarlet is looking everywhere for some paper.
“I have my phone!” Constance takes it out.

“Cool! I’ll send them to you after we talk, so you don’t need to write anything!” Scarlet smiles.
“Yay! But I’m bad at typing with my phone…” Constance adorably informs Scarlet. She typed with your phone before though… “Please teach me, Miss Scarlet!”
“Sure!” Scarlet starts talking about her new set of rules:

>Secrecy is mandatory. It’s at the discretion of the judges what number of people one participant can reveal this information to, but if it’s done at large it breaks the rule completely.
>Harming civilians using their entities is prohibited. Sowing mass hysteria against civilians is prohibited.

>It’s at the Judge’s discretion, but if collateral damage happens to a civilian, it counts for the last rule.
>Battles can have rules depending on the Judge refereeing.
>Entities cannot take full control of their hosts.
>Battles can only occur if red zones are activated and with one of the Judges’ approval.
>Battles can only occur in designated places with the least amount of civilians around possible.

>If any of these conditions aren’t met, the player and the entity are disqualified. Depending on which of the two (or both) broke the rule, that will be the one who receives the most severe punishment.

“So? How’s that?” Scarlet reveals her scheme! Not bad.
“Woaaah!” Constance stares at the rules with huge eyes. “That’s so cool!”
“You came up with all that in just our talk?” You’re surprised too, but for other reasons.
“When I was little I loved making board games…” The redhead looks away in bashful surprise. What a nerd!

“The real problem is how they are going to enforce rules like this in the first place. I know all Judges are not in great shape.” You look at Constance, trying to hint meaning with your eyes. “Not like a certain someone, who’s looking better than ever!” You headpat Constance again!
“Hehehe…” The bubbly Constance is happy to hear that, but also happy to get heatpat again. “I’ll… figure out something!” The mummy girl closes her eyes in deep thought. “Yes. I think this is cool. I’ll let the others know, and we’ll have a meeting tonight!”
“Right!” Scarlet feels like progress has been made. That’s a bit jumping the gun though, isn’t it?

“Man, if everything Scarlet proposes goes through… It will be like a completely different game.” One that isn’t nearly as bad or lethal! “Too bad the consequences for it are going to stay the same.”
“Right…” Scarlet now looks worried again.
“Don’t worry too much. I got this anyway.” You raise your fist. “I told you, I have plans.” Not many, but you don’t need too many anyhow.

“Uhm… I’ll let you know what ends up happening later.” Constance nods to herself. “So don’t worry, okay?”
“Cool! Thank you very much, Constance!” Scarlet bows in gratitude. You just stand there and nod.

“Mhm!” Constance bows back! She didn’t get the interaction, but it’s still cute! “Um… I d-don’t want to be mean, but I need to prepare for the meeting…” Constance tucks herself into her bed. Right, she needs to go to sleep. The sick girl needs to rest and heal.
“Remember, I’ll send you everything I just said!” You and Scarlet prepare to leave the mummy to her rest.
“I have a good memory! But please do too!” Constance yawns and closes her eyes. “Goodnight Johnny, Scarlet.”
“Have some nice dreams, Constance…” You part ways with the mummy. Scarlet does one final bow to leave the room.

Outside of Constance’s room, Scarlet still looks as determined as when she made her speech to you.

“Thank you for letting me help.” Scarlet turns back to you. “But don’t think this is over, Johnny. I’ll do everything in my power to help you succeed, not because of… you know… But because everyone’s future depends on it!”

How do you respond to Scarlet?

>“You’re doing plenty to help with just this, Scarlet. Thank you. All you can do now is wait and see.”
>“I guess we’re forming a team here? Let’s hope it doesn’t take us months to give it a name…”
>“If you want to continue helping, I know exactly who you need to talk to.” Make her talk to the Motley Crew!
>Write In.

Do you spend more time with Scarlet now?

>Yes. You need to discuss the terms with her! What she can and can’t do!
>No. You need to go back to your apartment! Your guest Ruby is waiting!
>Write In.

She not only shares our goal of wanting to save the world but she's also pretty smart, I'd say it's only fair we at least give her a chance, even if it's just as someone to consult with. But make it clear that she's not allowed to do anything dangerous

>No. You need to go back to your apartment! Your guest Ruby is waiting!
We'll definitely do it some other time when we're not busy though. We'll meet up again when we learn what rules are accepted or not, so we can do that then

She probably has a feeling about them being involved. She doesn't have to join them.

Goddamn, she actually did judges' job for them in less than the 5 minutes. She also deserves a good headpat for that

I honestly feel we can trust her to have our back more than a lot of the members of the Motley Crew

>Agreed, the logical part of my brain tells me that there's no way things are this bad if it was that simple
Just wanna mention that last update confirmed they have weekly meetings and it's still this bad. I knew they were incompetent but I'm starting to worry they me be straight up retarded. Worse at making at keeping order than a 17 year old girl, you can't make this shit up

Yeah, didn't think you could fail with a formula as idiot proof as the weekly meeting. What i'm interested to see is which get rules get the green light or not. I honestly don't know how rules like
>Secrecy is mandatory
>Harming civilians using entities is prohibited
>Entities cannot take full control of their hosts
weren't around before. I get they're trying to be hands off but this is just asking for mayhem. The rest are also good but the two rules I'm skeptical of passing through (at least without a vote) are
>Battles can only occur if red zones are activated and with one of the Judges’ approval.
>Battles can only occur in designated places with the least amount of civilians around possible.
They're too big of a jump from before and not allowing fights without Judges approval is the opposite of hands off

“I guess we’re forming a team here?” You adjust your glasses. “Let’s hope it doesn’t take us months to give it a name…”
“Of course we are! And as for the name… Well, I got nothing!” Scarlet’s cleverness died rather quickly. Even she has her limits.

“Just to be sure, you don’t hate me anymore, right? Or you can at least understand why I wanted to keep this a secret the whole time?”
“Of course! I was really upset with you, you know? There were so many things going through my mind about who you were, what our friendship meant, what I was getting right and wrong about us. It was so frustrating…” Scarlet’s face falls to a somber look. “But I don’t think I really hated you, Johnny. I just hated what you did. In the end, it was the same thing that happened to me, so I needed to be more understanding – but it did hurt. I thought I wasn’t good enough to help you and…”

“I’m sorry.” You felt the need to say it again.
“Don’t be, but thanks. I get it now, and it fits with the kind of guy you are. It’s not something I would’ve done, but that doesn’t matter now! I’m more than happy you decided you could trust me!”

“Remember this is dangerous. Don’t overdo it or expose yourself as a target.”
“Right! I’ll be your helping hand, and the same goes to you, Johnny!” Scarlet smiles without anything to impede her. It feels nice to see her this way just one day after last night. It’s almost like it never even happened… even though it did.

“Well, I think I need to go back home now. I have stuff to do...” Preparing your residence for your homeless rich guest (who is decidedly NOT a hobo) is the first thing!
“I moved into a dorm right now. Here, I’ll text you my new address. I’m all alone, so feel free to call me anytime!” Scarlet sends you a text with her address. “If it’s anything you need help with, you know you can count on me.”
“Right…”

“Also, have you ever thought about having a costume? You don’t need something ridiculously flashy like WILDFLAME does, but something to hide your identity.” Scarlet starts measuring you up with her eyes. Said eyes are clearly glancing back to certain parts of you. You’re not sure if Scarlet is aware or not… or if you like it or not. “I don’t really know much about your demon partner thing, but something that keeps a theme with whatever they look like would be a good starting point. What do you think?”

“I can turn invisible, you know…?” What’s the point of a costume if that will happen often! “Plus, I think my power only makes my clothes and other things invisible because it counts them as part of me. Not sure if that has a limit or not.” You never really played around with your power itself, even after all those marshmallows you ate. Maybe a field test is in order in the future…?

“I like her idea. A warrior’s armor is part of his pride.” Philonune interjects.
“I believe at some point you said something different, Philo…” You retort through your link.

“Are you talking with your ghost friend?” Scarlet wonders, reminding you you’re already on the streets heading for the subway station.
“Y-Yeah… Did I say that out loud?”
“No! But… that explains why you space out sometimes!” Scarlet giggles. “It’s obvious to anybody who watches you, you know?” The giggling suddenly stops, as Scarlet becomes a rather different shade of her namesake. “N-Not that I do that, or anything…”
“…Shit.” You’re more of a weirdo than you knew! And here you thought you were hiding your power level this whole time!

The conversation dies down on a light note, as you continue to walk along with Scarlet on your usual route to the station.

“…D-Do you really think Pokyo Lokyo is safe?” The redhead asks, looking around at the apartments, office complexes, and other buildings around you. The air of emptiness and desolation is still persistent, even though there’s the occasional loaded car or N.U. vehicle passing by on the road, and there’s still some people going places on the streets.
“Yeah. I mean, I would be more worried about the military guys than anything else…” You mutter, keeping your voice down as you pass a small group of said military guys chatting to each other. None of them pay attention to you two. “I don’t think those guns are fake or replicas.”
“Right!”

You took Scarlet back to the subway then finally parted ways! As you return home, sunset still not quite there yet, you see Ruby waiting outside your apartment. She only has a backpack with herself, and nothing else… and hasn’t noticed you yet!

Sadly, this is all we have for this week’s thread! Thanks for playing and see you next time!

(Please think of a name for Johnny’s gang for next time!)
