So, news! I'm moved in and more or less settled in the 'apartment' here- it's kinda the equivalent of mom's basement, in a place where the water table is too high for basements. Haha! I'm sure I'll catch some hell for that; which is fine, I kinda deserve it. Sorry for the late start this evening, too- Maus is having drama with the girlfriend, so you know how it goes. He may or may not go back to his apartment to find everything smashed or burnt or whatever, who knows? We'll see. Haha!

Archive here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?tags=Strike%20Witches%202016 And, for anyone interested in joining now, to catch up you can ignore anything that isn't tagged with 'reboot' in the title- the original Strikers 2016 doesn't really have anything in it that's going to affect this run or play into it at all.

I guess that's it for news, haha! We may run a bit Sunday to make up for the late start today, depends on where we get to and if I have to miss any more time this week.
=============================================================================================

Kyou had you both up before Wendy or Merlin- though only just, in Wendy’s case. The older witch emerged from the bedroom, clad not in PT gear, but in what looked like fairly comfortable pajamas and a pair of fuzzy pink slippers- she blinked when she saw Kyou on the couch, tying her running shoes.

Wendy looks mortified- both that you’re up before her and that she’s somehow dressed improperly, and apologises for both not having at least morning tea waiting, and that she’s not dressed for PT.

Kyou shoots a glance back at you before shaking her head. “We said nothing of it to you, Wendy.” She says. “There is no reason for you to have known we run every morning.”

“Regardless, I should have assumed you would.” Wendy responds. “Master Morgan has always had his morning runs, and I knew this. It was stupid of me to not remember.”

“It’s nothing.” You tell her. “Take it easy, when we get back, we’ll eat and see what Merlin has for us.”

The older witch nods- though her expression doesn’t change at your reassurances as you step out of the room.

Kyou holds her comments until you’re both safely in the elevator. “Master Morgan?” She says, with a faint smile. “I understand it is the right of a consort-prince to keep a concubine, but it does seem rather soon.”

You shake your head, about to respond, and she laughs, grabbing your hand with hers and giving it a short, sharp squeeze before letting go. “I am merely playing.” She says, the grin falling off of her face. “I understand she’s nervous and worried about her new duties.”

You relax a little and nod. You are starting to wonder, though- she seems worse than you remember.

>>
Kyou stretches, arching her back and folding her hands over her head as you step out of the elevator and into the lobby- there’s a group of trainees here, their guide and chaperon at their head, getting ready for their own run again. You get a nod from the chaperon- you don’t recognize her, but then again, you imagine that doesn’t matter much- you nod back as you walk past.

You run a shorter route today- though you do make it a point to get down by the flight line, where the first morning flights are already rolling off the pad. They’re lifting by the time you turn away, a pair of F-14s and a pair of F-35s. You almost wonder if the aggressors are already airborne or not- if it’s the Lightning IIs against the 14s, it's going to be an ugly fight. The Tomcat design may be pretty old, but the newest model can compete with most of the newest jets on even footing.

You finish your run after one lap around the shortened path, and head into the room to find an English breakfast waiting- and Wendy dressed in a fresh USN witches' uniform. She looks somewhat happier now, you note- she's able to serve, to make herself useful.

Kyou heads back into the bedroom, closing the door behind her as she prepares to get a quick morning shower- you'll be in after her. "Tea?" Wendy asks from behind you as you sit on the couch, taking off your running shoes.

[x] You know this kind of thing isn't necessary, Wendy.

You frown. "You know this kind of thing isn't necessary, Wendy." You say, looking over your shoulder at her.

Her expression falls a little, but she nods. "I- " She pauses. "I know." She sighs. "But I feel as if I have to earn my keep. After you treating us to supper last night I thought-" She shrugs, helplessly. "I must be doing something."

"Must you?" You ask- still taking the offered cup of tea and indicating that Wendy should take a seat.

She does so, sighing. "Mas- Morgan." She says, catching herself, knowing you don't really like her habit of referring to you as 'master'. "I'm thankful and gratified that yourself and Kyou think so much of me as to be willing to risk taking me as a wingmate, and I promised I won't question that any further, but I feel as if I must work to earn my keep in the household."

You blink- while she's not technically wrong, you're more than a little worried that her train of thought isn't a division of labor among equals, but that she's got to handle every domestic task she can, because that's her place- which isn't the case at all.

"That doesn't mean you're a servant here, Wendy." You point out. "You're our partner. A teammate."

"Then it's my duty to take care of my team." She returns. "Please, Morgan. Let me do this."

[] If that's what you want, fine. You can make breakfast when we have to cook.

[x] If that's what you want, fine. You can make breakfast when we have to cook.

"If that's what you want, fine." You respond with a nod, getting a relieved look in return. "You can make breakfast when we have to cook."

Wendy nods- though she clearly expects more assignments. You shake your head. "That's it." You say, looking past Wendy as Kyou emerges from the bathroom, neatly dressed in a full IJN witches uniform- including the skirt.

She cocks an eyebrow at you and Wendy, and smiles at the older witch when she turns in her seat. "Good morning, Wendy." She says, nodding. "Did you sleep well?"

Wendy nods, standing quickly. "Yes, quite." She says. "Tea?"

"Tea would be excellent, thank you." Kyou says, walking over to stand near you. "Morgan, the shower is available."

You nod, standing and brushing by Kyou- a little too close, you think, though neither she nor you really care.

You shower quickly, dressing in a duty uniform- Muninn is down for the day, and there's honestly not much you can do, but you have to pretend anyway. Your father has told you about how, when he wasn't flying, typically he had paperwork to do- they've done away with that, for the most part, for Drake crews these days. It's one of the things that sometimes drives a bit of dislike for wyvern crews among the rest of the fleet- you're basically flying playboys.

Of course, that's usually not the case anyway. Most crews are busy regardless of lack of paperwork or not- either here at Miramar, flying as aggressors, or assisting the Air Force out of Nellis AFB, doing the same. And most Wyvern crews spend most of the year aboard one carrier or other- you've heard of one crew spending five years without setting foot on land, cycling among carrier decks.

Heading back into the living room, you find Kyou and Wendy talking- Kyou leaning forward a bit in her chair, Wendy seeming to flounder a bit. Kyou nods at you as you step out of the bedroom. "Ah, Morgan." She says. "We were discussing what to do today. I suggested we visit the beach, but Wendy feels we should remain on post, should we be needed."

Wendy looks unsure of herself, but she nods. "It's just that, if we are needed, the extra hour difference could be rather important." She says.

Kyou nods. "But it will take at least that long to prepare Muninn for flight, and it seems foolish to squander a day such as today inside."

Wendy looks at the floor between her shoes. "Well, I also don't have any clothing suitable for the beach." She says, quietly. "I- ah. I have no clothes other than my issued gear and my pajamas."

Kyou smiles. "Perhaps this is an excellent chance for some time for us to get to know each other. Morgan, would you object if Wendy and I were to go acquire her some proper swimwear?"

[] Not at all. I've a few things I've been meaning to do.
[] Wendy's right, we should stay on post, but there's always the pool.
[] Well, Wendy does have a point. Maybe we should stay on post today.

[x] Not at all. I've a few things I've been meaning to do.

You shake your head. "Not at all." You say, trying to suppress your smile at the excited look that flicks across Kyou's face- and the slightly worried one that appears on Wendy's. "I've got a few things I've been meaning to do."

Kyou smiles. "Excellent." She says, standing up. "Let's be off, Wendy." She says. "We may take some time to find a suitable outfit."

"Y-yes mum." Wendy says, dutifully following Kyou out of the room, only hesitating briefly to shoot a glance back at you.

You wait a few minutes after the two of them have left to move from the couch, helping yourself to some of the breakfast Wendy made- and making sure the rest is put into containers and put away for later. Frankly, she's a fine enough cook- she's had plenty of experience, and she's been away from England long enough to learn other recipes- but you know if you let her, she'd attempt to take on all the domestic tasks, and that's just too much for anyone.

You sit in quarters for another half hour or so after eating before poking your head in the other room to check on your aunt- only to find it empty. It makes sense, you figure- she said she had plenty to do, and of course, she probably wanted to start early. Just as well, you think- you didn't really have much to bother her with today, and knowing her, you'll see her this evening again anyway.

So, instead, you sit for a minute, scrolling through your phone. You know your sisters are on base- both Lindsey and Rebecca- though both of them are probably on duty right now, and dealing with classes, or preparing for their first flights of the day. You could always go down to the flight line anyway- even with your fighter down, it's a chance to catch up with the chief, and see if there's anything you can do to help without getting in the way. There's also an Email from Cass, dated sometime last night- and a couple of attachments. You wonder what that's about- if she and Hohiro are an item, it better not be what you think it is.

[] Give one of the sneks a call- maybe you can kill some time helping them out
[] Head down to the flight line, see if you can lend a hand.
[] Deal with this email from Cass first- hopefully it's not what you think it is.

that's going to be it for the night from me!

A bit of news I forgot at the start though, gents. I'll be having a midterm break here this coming week, which means we might be able to get in a run starting wed. and running through to Saturday. It'll depend on the thread, of course, what page it's on and all that, but I think it should go a little ways to making up for all the missed time the last week.

But that's it otherwise gents, so till tomorrow, cheers!

[x] Deal with this email from Cass first- hopefully it's not what you think it is.

You sigh internally, opening the Email from Cass and downloading the attachments- thumbnails never seem to generate properly on your phone. To your surprise, they're all mostly clean- Only one has Cass in a mirror, and she's even wearing underwear, and only a few with underthings 'accidentally' laying in plain view. For the most part, they're all the kind of thing you'd expect to see though- the traditional gift for a visiting witch from the ship's compliment, a couple shots of a sunset somewhere in the pacific. An IJN F-14 in the middle of a cat launch, that kind of thing. Tellingly, there's even a few shots of the inside of the Imperial cabins aboard ship.

Overall, you think, she's probably still not entirely sure about Kyou's brother- but, judging by the decided lack of risque things in the pictures- well, relative lack- she's certainly got an idea about it in her head.

Also in the Email is a request that you go to her apartment here in town and get a few things for her to deliver when you get to the carrier. Nothing big, thankfully, just a few minor things she forgot- though it does include one of her red dresses that doesn't leave a whole lot to the imagination. She points out, helpfully, that most of your other sisters have a spare key- most of them have keys to each other's places, afterall.

It closes out with the usual. She says she's doing well and Hohiro is, quote "pretty great, but still not as great as you are" which is cringe-worthy, at best- but more or less normal, for her. It's also more than she's ever said for any other potential suitor- normally, they don't even compare favorably.

It does give you something to do- you know where her apartment is, though you haven't been there since she moved in- and you can get a spare key pretty quickly, assuming either of the sneks is on the ground still.

That said, there's still other things to do- and you'll have plenty of time to go to Cass' apartment, should you decide to. You could just as easily not- it's not like she needs any of the things she asked for, and while they're all fairly small, they aren't all innocent, either.

[] Let's just go get this done- better now than to have to answer questions later.
[] We can handle that later, let's go see if we can go find a productive way to spend time.

[x] Let's just go get this done- better now than to have to answer questions later.

You lock your phone and stand up, realizing that, as much as maybe you don't want to, it's better to get this knocked out now, rather than have to answer questions about why you're packing out a bag full of your sister's clothes. While you know the answer you'd supply should be more than enough, you'd still rather not have to deal with it.

You change into a flight suit before heading to ops- while you'd have been allowed to wear your khaki duty uniform, or even a set of NWUs on the pad, it seems wrong to be seen near the jets outside of one of your one piece flight suits.

Ops is fairly busy- there's a lot of flights going on, afterall, and of course, with both Merlin and a significant percentage of the Navy and Marine's Wyvern fleets present, there's also more than a little brass. Thankfully, most of the ones you encounter don't seem to recognize you- or, if they do, they've got more important things to worry about than you, anyway.

From ops you're able to find out that Rebecca is still on the ground- she's instructing a class on the finer points of ground maintenance. While witches, like pilots, don't usually maintain their own strikers, they're expected to know the rudiments, at least enough to help out when it's necessary. Unlike pilots, of course, most witches get to be pretty proficient in striker maintenance, to the point that they're fully capable techs in their own right. Merlin maintains that's because strikers are almost criminally simple systems- enough so that learning to tech them took her about three weeks.

Rebecca, somewhat predictably, is taking advantage of the weather by teaching her class inside the striker hangar, with both sets of rolling doors yawning open to let the wind blow through the building. She pauses as you approach, staying far enough back to let her get to a good pause before she walks over.

"Morning, bro." She says. "What brings you down here?"

1/2
>>
"Cass." You say, simply. Rebecca sighs.

"What has she gotten into now?" She asks- absent her sisters, Rebecca's actually pretty easy to get along with and fairly normal. "Do I want to know?"

You shrug. "Nothing, really. She just asked me to head over to her apartment and grab some things she missed. We'll be visiting the Kaga as part of our deck tour."

Rebecca blinks. "Oh, really?" She says. "Huh. I'd have thought she was trying to lure you to a deserted island or something and this was a step in a horribly elaborate plot to do so."

You smile. "Maybe it is, but she didn't ask me to bring anything that would be useful, if that's the case."

Your sister snorts, then looks hurriedly over her shoulder to make sure none of her students heard the noise. If they did, they know better than to look up or acknowledge they did, at least. "If it was, she wouldn't give it away like that. She'd ask for, ya know. Sexy clothes and underwear and shit. You know. So she could seduce you better."

You shrug again. "Maybe, but you'd think if it was a deserted island she'd be just as happy to walk around naked anyway."

"Hmm. Maybe. So what do you need? Her spare key?"

You nod. "If you've got it handy." You say, and she smiles, fishing it out of her pocket.

"Lucky for you, I do." She says. "Bad habit, if they ever fall out of my pocket in flight I'm up shit creek."

"Worked for me this time round. Thanks becc."

"No sweat. So, Morgan..." She leans in. "What's the deal with you and Wendy and Kyou now I get she's your wingmate, but aren't you worried about how old she is? I mean, I know she's good, but you know any of us would fly with you if you asked. Cass would do anything to fly your wing, and it's not like we'd mind at all." She pauses. "Heck, might be kind of fun."

You blink at that.

[] I don't think that'd work out, Becc. Thanks though, I appreciate it.

[x] write in!

"Depends." You say. "Are y'all willing to get plugged?"

Rebecca frowns. "Well, I guess that depends on if we knew who we'd end up flying with. Like, Cass would never accept it if she didn't get an iron-clad guarantee she'd be flying with you."

You nod. "Sure. But what about the rest of you?"

She hesitates. "I think Tatyana may go for it anyway." She says, after a minute. "I think I would if I could get it in writing they'd put me with who I wanted. After that, I don't really know. Cass is the only one that wouldn't blink at it if they told her she'd fly your wing forever after it though."

You nod. "See?" You say. "Finding a replacement for Wendy isn't just that easy afterall."

"Well, hang on." Rebecca says. "I did say I'd do it, and we both know Cass would swim home if they told her she had the choice to team up with you. Ana's enough of a weeb that she'd go for it because it'd mean she got to team up with the Imperial Princess."

You laugh at that. It's not an inaccurate assessment of your sister. Honestly, you do get the impression it's more the navy refusing to release them from squadron service for the necessary training and the down time for the surgery. "Fair enough."

Rebecca shrugs. "I mean, it's just an offer. We both know Wendy's freakishly good, and honestly she's probably the best of the available choices for you, but you know she's in her forties, and she'd be pushing into her sixties by the time you finished out your commitment. We're all about the same age, and all of us have a little combat experience. Just think about it some, ok?"

You nod, then Rebecca smiles. "Well, I think that's plenty. The cadets have probably fucked up the test units enough by now. You have anything else for me?"

"Nah. Thanks Becc."

"Sure thing. See ya later." She says, turning back to her class.

You head back through operations and pause- you don't have a car here, and you're kind of hesitant to see about getting a driver for off post. You're not even sure if that's what Kyou and Wendy did, but you can't imagine they stayed on post, either. Vaguely, you wonder how happy they'd be to find out she went somewhere without you- you're supposed to be her bodyguard, afterall.

You end up getting a ride from an uber- one that's on post, though a different driver than last time. You reflect that this probably isn't doing your bank account any favors- though it's still more economical than keeping a vehicle here.

Cass' apartment is an excellent example of witch privilege- it's in the city, as opposed to the cheaper areas near the bases, and it's one that someone else of her pay grade might struggle to afford. Her apartment is downtown, near Balboa stadium, and in what you can only imagine is a crushingly high rent area. The men behind the entry desk looks up at you, but doesn't say anything as you walk past- you must look like you know what you're doing. Cass' apartment is up on the top floor, high enough up that you can look east across the interstate pretty easily. It's a little stuffy- it's probably been closed up since she left- and kind of bare- similar, you think, to how you'd keep it.

Her bedroom is kind of dark- she's got the blinds closed and curtains drawn over those. Flipping on the lights, you note somewhat dryly that she left the bed unmade- and totally thrashed, one sheet dangling on the floor and the corner of the fitted sheet pulled loose. Fortunately, her closet is somewhat more organized- there's even a green sea bag sitting in the corner, empty. You quickly gather all the clothes she directed you to- even the underwear- and jam it in the bag, closing it up and throwing it over your shoulder. The dress, you reflect, looks about a size too small for your sister- and either way is short enough that you almost wonder if it would leave her bareleg. It's not unheard of for a witch to do that, but it's rare outside of the military- and rare for military witches to do it while off duty.

As you leave, you note that, while her walls are fairly empty, there's a family photo- one of the ones where she'd managed to end up standing a little too close to you, half turned into you, both of her arms around your neck. Taken sometime just before you left for Annapolis, it's one of the last times you were all together- minus your mother and Liz, of course. Next to that is a framed graduation picture of you- which, honestly, is a little overboard, even for her, you think.

The ride back is similarly quiet- though you're stuck in traffic after an accident shuts two lanes of the interstate. By the time you get back to the dorm, Kyou and Wendy are already there- Kyou looking quite smugly pleased, Wendy looking more than a little embarrassed. Kyou smiles as you walk in.

"Ah, Morgan." She says. "Come have a seat here. Wendy and I have purchased some clothing for her, and we were wondering your opinion of it."

"I fully understand if you don't want to be bothered-" Wendy says, a bit nervously.

"It's not that dissimilar from a uniform." Kyou points out. "the only difference is that you also do not wear a shirt."

Wendy fidgets a little. "Must it show off so much skin though?" She asks. "There's little left to the imagination."

"More than enough." Kyou responds. "But if it makes you uncomfortable, perhaps it would be better to not. Morgan and I can go to the pool and you may remain here, if you wish."

Wendy looks torn, and shoots a look your way- looking for direction.

[] Why don't you come down to the pool with us, Wendy?
[] She's right, Wendy. If you want to stay up here, it's not a problem.

[x] Write in!

"We'd like it if you came with us, Wendy, but if you want to stay here, that's fine." You say- it's leaving her a way out, you know, which she'll use- normally. Of course, you're not sure if she'll try to this time.

Kyou gets up to change as Wendy looks torn- you're not sure Kyou appreciates you giving her a way out, but at the same time, you can't see how she's ever going to get remotely better if you're willing to make decisions for her. She'll fall into the same routine-all too happily. And, you know, she'd be perfectly happy being kept on a leash- some kind of Stockholm syndrome, you think, though your knowledge of psychology is a bit more limited than you'd prefer. Vaguely, you wonder what she'd have been like if she'd have had a normal upbringing.

Shaking it off, you look at her a bit longer- then open your mouth to say something just as she stands. "I-I believe I'll go with." She says, a bit hesitantly. "I-if that's all right, I mean. I don't wish to intrude-"

"Not at all." Kyou says- she was out fast enough that you wonder if she was wearing her swimwear under her clothes- though these look new, and certainly not issued. She smiles a bit when you quirk an eyebrow. "I did some shopping for myself, as well." She says, as an answer.

You nod, standing up and heading into your room to change as Wendy makes her way back to her room- presumably to do the same. You're out well before her- Kyou looks a little impatient. "I am beginning to wonder if she has forgotten how to wear her new clothing." She says to you as you hand her a towel.

"Probably just nervous." You point out.

1/2
>>
"I am finding that is the case with her." Kyou says. "However, she responds well to direction. It is as if she is anxious to be led, and less to to make her own decisions."

You nod. "That's more or less it."

"Similar to Spears, then." Kyou remarks with a frown. "But for Spears, the reasoning was plain, if not spoken. With Wendy, I am aware t he behavior stems from systemic and continual mistreatment almost from the beginning of her education until your father stole her from the RAF. I am wondering if, at this point, it is too late to help her recover, and if it is not better to merely take care of her as is necessary."

You're about to answer when Wendy steps out- already looking at the floor and blushing a furious red. You have to admit- Kyou has an eye for this kind of thing. It's understated- and actually not nearly as small as you'd been afraid, but the simple, solid-colored design shows off the older witch incredibly well- almost as well as a tailored suit would have. It also doesn't leave a lot to the imagination, the lowleg design cut low enough that it sits just above 'indecent'- and probably pretty far into 'salacious'.

Kyou looks over at you and nods, pleased with herself. "What do you think, Morgan?" She asks. "Wendy chose it herself."

Wendy squeaks a little at that. "I-I only mentioned I thought it would look good." She protests, a little weakly. "Not that I though I would look good in it."

Kyou shrugs. "Regardless of your reasoning, I believe it was an excellent choice."

[x] It looks great on you Wendy.

You nod, agreeing. "It looks great on you, Wendy." You say- it really does show off that she's shockingly attractive, and the simple black color contrasts Kyou's own white swimsuit- which you're not sure if they planned, or if that's just happy coincidence.

Still- she accepts a towel and falls into step behind you and Kyou on the way down to the pool- and she's even recovered some of her composure by the time you step out into the pool area. You're glad the lifeguard on duty seems to be mostly disinterested in the three of you- you're pretty sure Wendy would combust if she wasn't.

She watches Kyou slip into the water, then looks over at you. "I-I think I shall sun myself." She says, almost as if she's asking permission.

You nod. "That sounds like a good idea. I could use a nap." You stand for a second before she realizes you want her to decide where to lay- the deck chairs, while they're older, are still comfortable enough, and fairly well-maintained, and there's a large grassy spot nearby where you could lay out. Wendy ends up selecting a group of chairs, tentatively stretching out in one.

"This is all rather embarrassing." She says, quietly enough that you're the only one that's going to hear it- Kyou's on the far side of the pool from you, and the lifeguard is on the opposite side.

"Why?" You ask. You're afraid you know the answer anyway- she's never done this at all before, and so it's about like being in public in her underwear. Which, coming from a witch, is a little funny, you have to admit, even though you know they don't think about it the same way.

"Well- " She hesitates. "I am quite sure other people have seen me in this now."

"Yes?" You say, wanting her to elaborate. Internally, you wonder why she's gotten worse- from what Frank and Merlin have said, she was nervous and eager to please, but she was more than capable of handling herself- she just had a disturbing tenancy to want to play the role of a housemaid. Now, though, she's almost like a lost puppy. Part of you wants to put it to the suddenness of her return to a combat team, but you're not sure that fully explains it.

"I just-" She pauses again. "I don't understand how you and Miss Kyou tolerate all the attention so well." She says. "I never feel as though I should be the one they're paying attention to. It's rather embarrassing."

"There's only the lifeguard here." You point out.

"A-and she can see everything." Wendy agrees, nervously. "Doesn't it bother you that she could be undressing you in her head right now?

[] Didn't you have to do public appearances when you were flying the circuit, though? How'd you know they weren't thinking the same thing back then?
[] Eh, I don't let it bother me. Sometimes it's even kinda nice to know you can get that kind of reaction.

[x] Eh, I don't let it bother me. Sometimes it's even kinda nice to know you can get that kind of reaction.

You stretch, adjusting yourself in your chair with a shrug. "I don't let it bother me." You say. "Sometimes it's even kinda nice to know you can get that kind of reaction." You leave out the part about occasionally using it to your benefit- there's no point in it, and you're pretty sure it'd just give Wendy the wrong ideas anyway.

"But what if I don't want them to look at me like that?" Wendy asks. "I'm rather plain, it's not as if deserve that sort of attention."

You laugh. "Are you really going to try to argue that with someone who thinks you aren't plain and are worth exactly that sort of attention?" You ask.

"W-well, no, of course not." Wendy says. "But, that's not the case now, is it? Anyone looking at me now would just see me trying to spread myself about."

You shake your head. "Kyou's got about the same amount of coverage as you." You point out. "A little less, actually. And there's no one here but her and I and the lifeguard anyway. Unless you think that's what we think of you?" You resist the urge to add on to that- honestly, if you hadn't already grown up surrounded by witches- both family and not- You'd be in the first camp that'd be undressing Wendy mentally. At this point you've got far more self control, though- and, frankly, she deserves better.

She shakes her head- you catch the motion out of the corner of your eye. "I don't think that, of course." She says. "I feel as safe with you as I did with Alyssa and Clarissa, or Frank before them." She sighs. "I'm just nervous. I'm sorry."

You laugh. "I could tell." You say- and get a small smile out of her for it.

"I have been rather shaky the last day, haven't I?" She asks, and you nod again. "Truth be told, Morgan, I am rather nervous about all of this. I'm well aware what I agreed to, of course, and I've reviewed both Kyou and your records. You'll forgive me for saying, I'm well aware of what the admirals hope about you, and I'm convinced they're not wrong. I only hope I'll be able to keep up." she pauses. "Not because of my age, but because I am of the opinion that, in time, only someone like Natalya would be able to match you. It's simply beyond me."

[] What makes you say that?
[] It's a little late to be changing our minds on this now, though, I think.
>>
And that's going to be it for the night! [x] What makes you say that?

"What makes you say that?" You ask.

She smiles lightly. "You are aware that, in witches, powers pass through generations, and often get more powerful over time?"

You nod- you're fairly well educated, for a man, on magical theory. It's still well below the knowledge most witches possess, but your mother thought it was necessary you at least have a limited understanding of it. She'd called it making sure you were 'well rounded'- but at the end of the day, like most other things, it was a case of preparing you to deal with the backroom dealings of the covens.

Wendy nods. "I suspected you would be." She says. "What isn't known is how that will respond in a case like yours, where your mother is known to be a witch and your father is a suspected talent."

"But we don't know anything about if I've got a talent or not." You point out. "I mean, Kyou's a once in a thousand year talent, but so was Merlin, and you stuck with dad and her just fine throughout the war."

"I did the best I was able." Wendy responds, a little self-consciously. "But that isn't my concern. We know that pilots and witches, as they grow closer, also grow more capable. This has been the case for every single wyvern crew since the beginning." She says. "And with you potentially having any number of talents, and Kyou being a thousand year witch, it's impossible to see how I'll be able to keep up. I'm already at the limit of my skill, you see."

"And you think Danielle or Spears would have been able to do better over the long term?" You ask.

She hesitates, but eventually nods. "I believe so." She says. "They are rather younger, and still have potential for growth. I'm afraid what potential I've left isn't anything approaching enough to match yours."

[] Even with the network Merlin's talked about?
[] Well, I understand the concern, but I disagree.

Hey guys, I got a pretty gnarly thunderstorm blowing through, so I'mma unplug for a couple minutes here to let it pass. Post should go up after I get back on!
>>
[x] Even with the network Merlin's talked about?

"Even with the network Merlin's talked about?" You ask. From your understanding, it works like an extension of the MIU- in effect, turning the Valkyrie witch into an extension of the Drake crew.

Wendy hesitates. "I'm not sure." She admits. "It does stand to reason that I would benefit from the same effect as Kyou over time. However, there's no proof that would be the case."

"There's nothing to indicate it wouldn't be." You point out.

Wendy nods. "I suppose so." She says. "Though I must admit that I'm still rather nervous that won't be the case. I'm well aware that there are a great deal of expectations on me, and I'd rather not be found wanting. Especially not by you."

You look over at her as she realizes how what she just said sounds- and blushes an interesting shade of red. "I-I don't mean like t-that!" She says, hurriedly. "I-i should say, I don't want you or Kyou to find me lacking because of all that I owe your family and- " She pauses.

You laugh, reaching over to pat her on the leg. "It's fine, Wendy." You assure her. "I know what you meant."

"Thank goodness." She says, sounding quite relieved- though her blush is slow to disappear. "I imagine that we won't be able to tell for some time, after which point it may prove to be rather impossible to separate us anyway." She says. "My fear is that, if I am unable to match you and Kyou, that you'll be forced to cover for me more and more as time goes on. It's rather disturbing to think of myself as possibly holding you back."

"I think, even if you don't end up growing much more, that you'll still have a marked advantage over any comers." You point out. "From what I hear, Valkyrie is amazing."

"Oh, quite." Wendy agrees, nodding. "It's amazing what young Merlin has done, and it's even more amazing to fly it again after all these years." She says. "The changes are rather astounding."

1/2
>>
"It's that different?" You ask, and she nods.

"Oh, very much so." She says. "I'm sure you're aware how much an interface unit changes how you think about combat, and how you approach it. For me, it's incredible to have all that data at your fingertips and a second person helping you process it all. I simply can't imagine returning to conventional strikers any longer."

You smile. "A true convert, huh?" You ask, and she nods again enthusiastically.

"If I were younger, I should feel able to take on the world." She says, smiling a bit sheepishly. "However, while it may be conceited to say it, worries notwithstanding, I feel as if we will be able to perform any mission they may ask us quite ably."

You nod, watching Kyou swim around- she doesn't splash hardly at all, you note, but swims like she's been doing it a long time. Most of it is a low-effort, gentle backstroke, though occasionally she'll pause and just float for a moment.

You're eventually joined by a small group of trainees, who all send more than a few glances your way, though they all stretch out on their own a little ways away. Wendy smiles. "It's good to see that the US has such a wonderful way of training their witches." She says. "The RAF was far less permissive when I was a witch-cadet."

[] It spoils them, though. Maman's been trying to get the system to tighten up.
[] I'm not sure the RAF system is one we're real comfortable with adopting, though.

[] Both.

You shake your head- While their time at the actual academies are probably about the same as any other cadet's, their initial flight training- here at carnival- is far more relaxed and free. There's better quarters, more time off, and far more liberty given to a witch trainee than a pilot.

"It spoils them, though." You say, shooting a glance at the witches in the chairs nearby. "Maman's been trying to get the system to tighten up." It's one of Maman's pet projects- and, in her defense, she's not exactly alone in it. But there have been voices for years raised on the same subject, and little has changed overall.

Wendy nods. "Still, that kind of liberty is necessary." She says. "One must remember that these girls have been attending an academy since they were sixteen, and it is incredibly difficult to live your teenage years under a microscope with an instructor ready to swoop in at the slightest mistake."

You nod- she's speaking from experience, there. "I'm not sure the RAF system is one we're real comfortable with adopting, though." You say.

Wendy nods again. "A middle point is probably for the best." She says. "The RAF can be incredibly harsh, and does little to prevent the witch-cadets from dealing with each other poorly." She shakes her head- it doesn't really bother her to talk about her past, but at the same time, she clearly doesn't have many good memories of her time before she was seconded to Spellcaster.

You shrug. "Either way, it's not our problem." You point out, to which Wendy nods.

"It's rather a pity we won't get the chance to see your youngest sister." She offers after another minute.

1/2
>>
"Who said that?" Tatyana responds, the doors to the building just sliding closed behind her. Wendy cranes herself around in her chair to look back, while you stand up, smiling. Your youngest sister is dressed in a bathing suit that looks like a cross between Wendy's and Kyou's- a pink lowleg sidetie, you'd be far more bothered by it if it wasn't just you and some other witches here. She's got a towel draped over an arm, too.

"Hiya Morg." Tatyana says, walking over and returning your hug happily. "They gave me a bump up since I've got family hear that'll be leaving in a couple of days."

"When did you report in?" You ask. "And why didn't you call?"

She shrugs. "Wasn't allowed. Went to the recruit depot from the airport and had to overnight there before they got me up this way." She says. "And I had to sign in and get a room before I could come out here. I saw you headed this way on the way in."

You nod, directing her to take one of the chairs nearby- Kyou's pulling herself out of the pool too, having noticed your sister. "So you've got liberty while you're here before your class?" You ask.

Tatyana shakes her head. "Not really." She says. "Hi Wendy!"

"Hello, Tatyana." Wendy responds as your sister steals your chair- forcing you down to the one you'd indicated for her. "And no, I don't have liberty. I'm not completing striker training, I'm just here for the next class drop."

You frown and nod, handing Kyou a towel as she walks up next to you. "Class drop? You're-?"

Tatyana nods and smiles. "I'm going into Wyverns." She says.

Kyou looks over at you, expectantly, as you blink at your sister's statement.

It's hardly a surprise, if you sit down to think about it, but at the same time, you're not sure you're comfortable with it. "Also, Moms said I'm supposed to stick with you while you're here." She continues, then smiles. "And my orders say that too. So, ya know." She grins, stiffening to attention and firing off a joking salute. "Cadet Bishop, reporting as ordered, sir."

Merlin (Best Aunt, the Witching World's equivalent to Tony Stark but less "alcoholic cassanova" and more "adorable milf", may or not have a mutual thing for us, Franks buddy-cop partner-in-crime from '89.)
Wendy (The hyper-competent but not-very-confident abused puppy aunt that we have now taken up as our wing-mate and part of our rag-tag team of awesome)

Are grandma and granddad still around? Been a while since I read SWQ89. Also remember we have at least one uncle, haven't checked that quest for cousins yet. (other uncle is in limbo...)

I think we got cousin's out of Pararescue Witches '89 from Rex. Ones a football player, and ones a pararescue jumper like Rex.

Jake is still roaming the countryside of Germany yelling about football and "That damn Wittmann"

Last snek was also named Elizabeth a few threads ago IIRC, we also need to find out who the father was of the one on Maman's side since it wasn't Frank. Unless I'm remembering it wrong the Sherks married one of Frank's cousins too, so their spawn are sorta related to us.

Sorry about the late start this evening gents, dinner ran a little long and then my heater set off the smoke alarms in the building, haha! All good, think I got it sorted out. Gotta love the weather- it was 90 this time last week, it's supposed to drop to 46 tonight!

No real other news, so let's get into it!

====================================================================================================

Tatyana's presence kind of changed plans- with her here, brandishing actual, honest-to-god orders temporarily attaching her to you, there really was no reason to not go to the flight line- as Kyou pointed out, even if you were in the way a little, it's something that you'd be expected to do with a potential Wyvern Witch.

Well, kind of. Technically, they're sent to understudy a fleet systems operator for a while before a class goes, but in your case, as usual, there's been an exception made- Tatyana will report in to another crew after you leave for your pacific tour, and will only be following you and Kyou for the next day and a half or so- you'll have to hand her off to the 'actual' crew before you leave.

That said, of course, it's good to see her- and she's suitably awed, approaching Muninn. She's been around drakes before, of course- she's spent a similar amount of time around Merlin as you have, and she's familiar with the aircraft as much as you are. Still, there's something about seeing a Fleet wyvern- even your father's, as storied as it is, isn't technically active duty- the guns are removed, and in theory it doesn't maintain capability for most of the weapon systems that were designed for the aircraft during the war.

In practice, of course, other than the empty gun bays, it's hardly any different from a fleet wyvern- and you know as well as anyone the guns can be reinstalled in a little under six hours, should it be necessary. It didn't make sense to leave Merlin in place on the bleeding edge of R&D only to make her test her new designs by passing them to a test crew at China Lake or Groom Lake- although you're sure that happens too.

The crew is putting the finishing touches on the network systems now- Wendy's Valkyrie is rolled out and parked under the wing of Muninn, while Merlin sits in what you assume is the ground interface cart- which looks like the cab of a farm tractor grafted to a ground tug, more or less. She's currently plugged, but still aware- though it's as good a chance as any it's Muninn that alerted her to your presence. She waves from inside the cab, but doesn't move to unplug or leave.

"So this is it, huh?" Tatyana says, and you nod. "Looks smaller than I remember."

"It's been how long since you saw one last?" You ask, and she shrugs.

"Couple of years, the horsemen had a couple of planes at an airshow at MCAS Beaufort when I was a first year." She responds. "That little one there, that's Wendy's bird?"

1/2
>>
You nod. "Valkyrie." You correct- as far as you know, that's the only name the thing has, though you're sure someone, somewhere, is cooking up a designation for it. Or preparing to recycle an old one.

"Huh." She says. "Man, I bet dad would have loved to have that thing available for the moms during the war. They're already embarrassing, imagine how they'd be if they'd been all flying together all the time. They wouldn't even have bothered living in sin for a couple of months like they did. Think we could get a closer look at it?"

"I see no reason why not." Kyou responds for you. "As long as the crew does not complain."

"Might be better if we just came back tomorrow." Tatyana says, thinking for a second. "You said they're flying the carrier team out tomorrow anyway, right? So we won't be in the way then, and you can explain the whole setup to me."

[] Yeah, that sounds like a better idea.

[x] We're fine, so long as we don't get in the way now.

You shake your head- the crew is mostly concentrated around the forward fuselage of Muninn, so you're fine, you figure, as long as you don't need to go up there. "We're fine, so long as we don't get in the way."

Tatyana, on hearing that, makes her way towards the Valkyrie- which, you note, is painted similarly to Muninn, with no real identifying scheme, just the light, flat gray of any other navy aircraft. "So this is basically a wyvern striker?" She asks- getting a hesitant nod from Kyou.

"So far as we understand it." Your partner responds. "It was designed as a complimentary unit to the Wyvern, to allow a wyvern and witch to fly together as a permanent pairing, rather than as the ad-hoc arrangements that currently exist. It gives her comparable endurance, speed, and firepower in a dogfight to a Wyvern, and includes a full AI, exactly like that of the Wyvern."

"So it can run a lossless full speed datalink?" Tatyana asks, her eyes getting wide. "That's amazing."

Kyou nods. "Yes. That's the work that's being performed on our fighter and the other two here." She says, gesturing to the other fighters- one, a dark, almost midnight blue color, with white stars picked out along the fuselage- and the other, A dull, dark gray with a crimson red wing- who are having work done as well, with valkyrie units parked under their respective wings.

"So if it forms a lossless link, does that mean you're sharing a full MIU link with the valkyrie unit's witch?" Tatyana asks.

>>
Kyou hesitates, looking over at you.

"We're not sure yet." You respond.

Tatyana shoots a glance over at you. "And you went with Wendy?" She says with a vicious grin. "Never figured you were that into her. What's the requirements for this thing? Are they taking program witches?"

Kyou looks over at you at the comment- you give a slight shake of the head. Tatyana's testing Kyou, you know- trying to provoke a response. She won't hammer on a point- if she's not able to get a response after a few tries, she'll drop it- unlike Anastasia. "As far as we've been made aware, Valkyrie is open to any witch who is willing to undergo the surgery for MUI links." Kyou says. "However, two of the three current witches were previously in the Wyvern program."

"But they're all vets." Tatyana states, getting a nod.

"Yes. Commander Maloney, as you know, is a veteran of the Soviet war, while Commander Peterson has combat experience over the mideast, as does first lieutenant Spears."

"First Lieutenant?" Tatyana asks. "She's Corps?"

Kyou nods. "Yes, she is a member of the marine corps." she says. "She has significant prior combat experience as both a member of an armored unit and again as a flight witch."

Tatyana nods. "I see. So it's not open to grads." She says- referring to the recently-graduated witches. Herself, most likely, you think.

[x] It's up to Merlin. She makes the final call on anyone.

You shrug. "It's up to Merlin." You say. "She makes the final call on anyone."

"Although, it is worth noting that competition for the last unit is expected to be fierce." Kyou points out. "Most of the fleet wyverns without a Valkyrie are currently pushing for their choices to be given the last position."

Tatyana nods. "I thought so." She stands up, looking at the Valkyrie. "Well, it's cool, but I think I'd still rather have a drake."

Kyou smiles. "It is rather hard to imagine anything else." Kyou admits, shooting a brief glance at the valkyrie under Mininn's wing before looking back at your sister.

"Though I've heard stories about the flight suit." Tatyana says, with a small grin. "Are they true? is it really like-"

"No." Kyou says, interrupting. "It is hardly noticeable and most of the rumors you will hear are greatly exaggerated."

Tatyana nods. "It's kind of a relief to hear that." She says. "I didn't think Merlin would have designed anything like that, but-" She shrugs. It's one of the rumors- one of the ones with more truth to it about your aunt, you privately know- that she's secretly incredibly lewd, and that some of the things 'inherent' to things she designs for interface with people wouldn't exactly be out of place in a bad romance flick. That said, while you know her well enough to know there's hints of truth to the claim, you haven't the slightest suspicion that she's allowed it to seep into her work- or anything she's designed, for that matter.

Kyou shakes her head. "Regardless, it isn't the case. The suit is uncomfortable, but not so much so that it becomes unbearable. Your MIU links will take far longer to become accustomed to."

Tatyana nods again. "If I may, ma'am, do you regret them?"

"Not for an instant." Kyou responds quickly, probably having anticipated the question. "I would struggle to achieve a tenth of what we are capable of as a team, and I, of course, have come to know your brother far better than I otherwise would, which is a great pleasure."

"What about you, Morgan?" Tatyana asks. "Do you ever think about how you'd have done without taking a drake?"

[] Not really anymore.

You shake your head. "Not really anymore." You say. Maman used to occasionally bring it up- how you'd have been a treasure to the special warfare community- and it was no few times during flight school you'd considered it, at least till your first flights. Still, some of the single-minded drive that you had been instilled with by her- in preparation, you're sure, for a glorious career as a SEAL or something- served you well, and you'd shot to the top of your class and stayed there.

Tatyana smiles. "Yeah, I don't know why I bothered asking." She says, laughing lightly. "I'm kind of anxious to get through the pipeline. How long did you have to wait, ma'am?" She asks Kyou.

Kyou frowns. "I was an active witch before I'd entered the program." She says. "But I only remained on my carrier for approximately a month before I was called to a class."

"How many other witches were in your class?"

"Ten, initially." Kyou says. "Three of us graduated the program."

Tatyana blinks. "It's that hard?"

Kyou smiles and shakes her head. "They weren't prepared for the commitments that come with a wyvern posting." She says. "The instructors make a great deal about the so-called drake marriage. It is easy to be flippant about before being confronted with the hard statistics. Some don't expect the demands of the position to be as difficult as they are, either." She smiles and looks over at you. "A great deal of time is spent in classes on how to manage your pilot and keep them out of trouble. This, we were told, is in no small part thanks to your father."

Tatyana laughs at that. "Yeah, that makes sense." She says.

Kyou nods. "Thankfully, I have not had much use for that section of my training." She says. "However, there is a great deal of time spent on that, and on what they call 'crash course domestics'." Her smile gets fairly thin. "There seems to be an expectation that, in addition to your role as teammate and partner, you are expected to be as a dutiful wife."

1/2
>>
Tatyana snorts. "I can see where that's a turn-off." She admits.

"It's a holdover." Merlin says, joining you. "From the first classes."

"Hi aunt M." Tatyana says, and your aunt smiles as she stops next to you.

"Hi T!" She beams. "How are you? We didn't expect to see you here yet."

Tatyana nods and explains how it's a favor- she's only here because you're here, and since you're leaving day after tomorrow, she'll be understudying with a wyvern crew on site before she gets a class.

"I see." Merlin says, looking over her shoulder at the crew, who are closing up panels and bolting them back down. "Did they say who you'll be studying with?"

Tatyana shakes her head. "No, but I have my orders with me. I think it's to the post commander." She says, reaching in her thigh pocket to pull them out- as an academy witch, and one not in striker classes, she isn't allowed to go bareleg on post.

"That's usual, yes." Merlin says, unfolding the orders and glancing them over, before handing them back. "Since you're program, you'll go see the admiral in charge when Morgan and Kyou leave. He'll assign you to one of the crews here."

Tatyana blinks at that. "You're not in charge?" She asks, and Merlin shakes her head.

"Not at all." She says. "I'm here because Morgan and Kyou are one of my trials jets. I have to be around to do any work on their aircraft or install and brief them on new equipment. Which reminds me, Morgan, Kyou, we do have some things to discuss."

"Oh." Tatyana looks interested- she would, of course. "So are you staying with them too?" She asks. "Is Morgan cooking every night?"

Merlin looks over at you. "I don't know." She says. "Are you?"

Anyone else creeped out that the youngest sister is basically going to get brainwashed into falling for some pilot just because she wants to backseat a wyvern? I fully admit I wasn't bothered when it was the male MC going through the process, but man is it uncomfortable when the tables are turned.
>>

Not really, because it's not brainwashing. It's more like drifting, you can't drift if you're not compatible to begin with. So any partner she might get put together with would be one that she could've fallen for to begin with.
>>
[x] Maybe once more tonight, but not anymore after that.

"Maybe once more tonight," You say, "But not anymore after that."

Kyou nods, supporting your statement. "With us leaving again, cooking as you do does seem as if it would be difficult." She says, then smiles. "Even with Wendy's assistance."

You shrug- Wendy's a fine hand at some things, but she struggles with the finer parts of others, and sill can't make a roux to save her life. Of course, she's capable of handling other things- like doing grocery runs, for example- and you're reasonably sure she can learn, especially now.

"I guess that's fair." Tatyana says, nodding. "I guess I already missed the good stuff, huh?"

You smile. "I already made chili, yeah."

"Damn." She says. "Any leftovers?"

"Some." Merlin responds for you. "But if Morgan's cooking again tonight then you should save those." She says, getting another nod from your youngest sister.

"Yeah, we can finish them later." She agrees, and Merlin smiles.

"I won't be here." She says, glancing over at you and Kyou. "I'll be flying out this weekend to join them on the rest of their deck tour. With prototype equipment installed, I want to be available to make adjustments and changes as necessary."

"Oh?" Kyou asks. "I was unaware you were joining us so soon."

Merlin nods. "I meant to tell you this evening." She says. "We can talk about it then, if you want."

"Well, I had some questions about Wyverns, if you don't mind." Tatyana says, looking up at the barrel of one of your two guns poking out from under the wing root.

Kyou nods in a 'go ahead' gesture, and Tatyana continues. "So I know these," She indicates the guns. "Aren't standard. Are all Wyverns like that?"

[] All wyverns are given a chance to personalize their equipment after selection, yes.

[x] Yes and no. We're a field test unit, so we've got some more options than other crews.

You nod. "Yes and no." You say, indicating the guns. "We're a field test unit, so we've got some more options than other crews."

"Well, kind of." Merlin says, getting a glance from both you and Kyou. "If I have something that's almost ready for the fleet and a new wyvern working up at the same time, I'll usually see if they want to trial it first. It's easier to have a crew start with a system than it is to have a crew try to adjust to it.

"Doesn't that also remove the ability for crews to compare the old to the new?" Kyou asks.

Merlin nods. "Yes, but usually it's a simple matter to judge relative performance based on reports from aircraft and crews. For example, You've always had the VLS, so you can't compare it to a conventional dorsal bay, but I can compare your engagement rate and success versus other crews that have the conventional bay arrangement."

"Or you can compare these guns to the usual quad." Tatyana remarks. "What are these, anyway?"

"Forty millimeter combined propulsion revolver cannons with a dual feed linkage." Kyou says. "They're capable of firing different shells on demand, and have a much greater striking power and range than the standard twenty five millimeter cannon equipped on other Wyverns."

Tatyana blinks. "so being a systems operator also involves being able to act as a technical officer, when necessary?"

Kyou shakes her head. "Not always, but I am very interested in everything that goes into our fighter." She says, looking over at you for a second. "As I feel any good operator should. It is your role in the aircraft to handle almost everything save for the actual flying. You will be performing the mission of four people in, multi-crew bombers- Flight engineer, radio operator, radar operator, offensive systems operator, and defensive systems operator." She smiles. "As well as providing your powers to the various systems as required in the fighter and projecting them where necessary as a shield or offensive ability."

1/2
>>
Tatyana blinks again. "That's.... a lot of workload."

Kyou smiles. "Yes, but it frees the pilot to use their mind to fly and fight. As they're less capable than we, we must remove as many distractions as possible for them, yes?"

Tatyana laughs at the joke- and even Merlin giggles a little. In her case it's a little more forgivable- while you don't exactly buy into the image surrounding your father of the world's deadliest golden retriever cleverly disguised as a fighter pilot, you also have to admit it's not too far off the mark. Dad's not exactly a genius for air combat- he got by more often than not on incredible talent and being able to bend physics in a few places- but he's not stupid, by any stretch of the imagination.

"So what's it like being under the command of a junior officer?" Tatyana asks. "I mean, I know it's a weird technical thing, but Morgan's the aircraft and crew commander, even though you rank him, right?"

Kyou nods. "Yes, but there are restrictions to that authority. It is more in place as a safety measure- the program's officers feel it is better for a pilot to make the decisions."

"If I may, why?" Tatyana asks.

Kyou looks over at you. "It is for the benefit of the mission." She says. "It will be explained to you in the program, but it's felt a pilot will have more of the proper attitude, unattached as he is to coven politics. He is expected to put the needs of the navy and the country first, whereas a witch may have competing loyalties."

"That's a load of-" Tatyana stops herself. "Sorry."

It's actually about 50-50. Generally I've found the only time where we've disagreed with her so far once we've gotten into live combat was in regards to following Swett's order to go fly circles over an already controlled airspace instead of engaging the ninjawitches.

"It is what it is." You say with a shrug. "For good crews, it's a partnership anyway. I run decisions past Kyou and listen to her in the air regardless."

"Yeah, but you don't have to." Tatyana says.

"It is unlikely you'll encounter a pilot that won't." Kyou says. "The process is designed to produce teams that work together, and, as you'll be told many times during the pipeline, it's too important to get wrong. Any pilot you potentially match with is unlikely to override you and treat you poorly."

Tatyana nods. "The recruiters for the program say that, but they won't go into detail."

Kyou smiles. "The simplest answer is that it's similar to a guided dating website." She says. "They won't even put you forward as a potential candidate to a pilot you wouldn't at least be friends with, and will urge you to refuse any partnership you have reservations about."

"Yeah, but don't you give up a drake if you do that?" Tatyana asks.

Merlin is the one that steps in. "You do, but even if you decide that you'd do anything to fly in a wyvern, the board or myself can make a final recommendation to the navy that a pairing not go ahead. Typically we don't have to, the pipeline does an excellent job of hammering home how critical getting it right is."

"Yeah, but..." Tatyana shrugs, then looks at Kyou. "You mean if you'd have felt off at all about Morgan, you'd have refused to fly with him?"

Kyou nods, then smiles. "Yes, but I, as you, have some advantages in the program. Refusing one pilot would not mean I wouldn't ever fly in a wyvern."

Tatyana frowns. "What do you mean?"

Kyou smiles. "Had I refused to fly with your brother, there was another wyvern cycling up. Similarly, there's a new one almost yearly, and I feel that with my talents, I would not have had to wait long to find a compatible crewmate." She pauses. "You are a Bishop, as is he. I imagine the navy will go to great lengths to make sure you're found a good match."

Tatyana frowns- she's similar to you in that she doesn't exactly like people making concessions for her based just on the family name, but nods. She's realistic enough to see that Kyou's right, you think.

"So the chances of me getting some creeper as my pilot are about nil." Tatyana says, and Kyou nods.

"That is correct. You are far more likely to find that any pilot you meet will be closer to any crushes you may have had as a younger woman." Kyou says with a bit of a smile. "Perhaps not the perfect ideal, but close enough."

"What about you, Morg?" Tatyana asks. "Is it like that for the pilot as well?"

That's a bit of a loaded question, of course- and you're sure she knows it.

[] Yeah. More, really, since we're the ones that pick our partners.
[] Kind of. You get your pick, but sometimes the one you'd love to date isn't the one you end up flying with.

ok guys, votes called!

Also, spilled water on my nice keyboard, haha. Man, 2019 has not been a good year for me and technology! haha!

[x] Yeah. More, really, since we're the ones that pick our partners.

You nod. "Yeah. More, really, since we're the ones that pick our partners."

"Wait, really?" Tatyana asks, and you nod.

"Yeah. So you get a list of potential candidate witches that the board has initially cleared you to fly with. You narrow that down to three primary and two alternates, then fly with the three primaries." You say, and Tatyana nods.

"You do one flight and then usually an informal dinner with each witch." You continue. "Once you've done that, you can either do a re-flight or you can fly with an alternate."

"Did you?" Tatyana asks, and you shake your head.

"No." You say. "I did one reflight, and that's it." You say. "Once that's done, you sit down and talk it out with Admiral Marshal. You make a decision, he makes a phone call."

"That's it?" Tatyana asks, and you nod.

"From there," Kyou adds, "The duty desk will relay the call to you. That's where you make your decision."

"One chance?"

Kyou shrugs. "You can back out at any point before you have your MIU surgery, but after that, you are committed."

"That doesn't seem so bad." Tatyana says, thinking briefly. "That was the problem most of us had, because none of the recruiters had actually done any time as anything other than Wyvern pool candidates."

Kyou nods. "Largely, it is a failing, yes." She admits. "However, that is why you're sent to understudy a crew, is it not?"

Tatyana frowns, but nods. "I guess so. Still sucks that you have to sign up before you can. Should be the other way around."

"There are a limited number of crews." Kyou responds. "And many of them are in no position to have a cadet following them to learn about the program."

Merlin nods. "And we've been talking to some of the older crews about heading to do the recruiting circuit after they get out. Until then though, this is the best we have."

"Well, I guess it works for me." Tatyana says, smiling. "I'd rather be spending time with Morgan than any of our sisters."

You suppose that's fair- You're probably more interesting to her, since you're effectively impossible to manipulate for her, and she enjoys the challenge.

And that's gonna be it for the week! Sorry about how slow the last post there was, Having to re-learn this basic keyboard is a bit of a challenge. At least I know where the backspace key is, haha!

No real news here, I think overall we're good. So, as usual, I'll be around to field questions or comments till the next thread, but till then guys, Cheers!

Also gents, I know it was a short run this week- which I guess is newsworthy, haha! My bad there, gents. Long story short, I have to stay late at work tomorrow (probably) to help set up for the Halloween event they're going to try. They want me to check the welds on their trailer and help set it up for the zombie shoot, so I'll probably be there late fixing the thing. This kinda got dropped on me this afternoon- which is something i hate work trying to do, but I won't bore you guys with a rant.

Anyway, yeah. I'm sorry about that guys, mind's kinda in other places (Sorry). We may run a long thread next week to make up for it.

T's been made aware of it and if she's cool with it then it's her decision to make. Legal adult and all that shite.

Also reminder that, while HIGHLY LIKELY, forming a Drake pair doesn't 100% guarantee a relationship.

>Anyone else creeped out that the youngest sister is basically going to get brainwashed into falling for some pilot
No bc she willingly chooses this and her family will come down on the pilot in question if he abuses this.
