CHAPTER 3: a tale of two sons

We’re about to meet Cheechong’s brother.
Roll 1d30. I’ll take about the first 4-6 results.

1. Eyes have non-human pupils
2. Sharp, pointy teeth
3. Exceptionally hairy
4. A feature on your head (eyes, nose, mouth, ears) has its function exhanged with either your asshole, your sex organ, or your nipples
5. Additional head
6. Tail
7. Extreme proportions - either tiny torso and very long legs or large torso and very short legs
8. Tongue is tube-shaped, like a worm, 66cm long and 3-5cm thick
9. You are a magical intelligence residing in your hair. Your entire body, including your head, is essentially a brainless construct serving as a vehicle for the hair. You may or may not be terrified of barbers.
10. No skeleton - you are a puddle of skin, muscle, and guts. Move like slime, limbs like tentacles. You can effectively impersonate a humanoid if you find and enter an exoskeleton.
11. Sharp, pointy chin - pointy enough to draw blood if poked into skin
12. Additional arm
13. Horns
14. Claws
15. Additional eye
16. Exceptionally muscular
17. Exceptionally long nose
18. Exceptionally wet, slippery skin
19. Pointy ears
20. Wings
21. Breathe smoke
22. Smell disagreeable to most humanoids
23. Breathe water like fish instead of air
24. Whites of eyes are a different colour
25. Animal feet (wolfish, horseish, goatish...)
26. Extremely prominent forehead
27. Sticky fingers, easily climbs walls
28. Additional ass
29. Very low body temperature
30. More comfortable on all fours than walking upright

You are Chinch, younger brother of Cheechong.

You were born with gills and have to carry oxygenated water around to keep yourself alive above water. You’ve chosen to stay on the surface for now, since that’s where your family is, but my god did you start considering your alternatives once puberty hit. Cheechong’s moved to a different school now. Feels a bit lonely around the house. You’ve always admired your older brother and often wonder if there’s a way you could turn your water-breathing to an advantage, just as he’s done with his lack of skeleton.

You wake up. Your alarm clock is ringing. The sound echoes through your pool. Very annoying. You punch it. It lands on the floor and keeps ringing. You curse your foolishness and reach for your breathing apparatus. Once fully attached, you emerge from the water and calmly turn off the alarm clock.

Another day. What do?

Fuck school.

Backwater School for Boys may be close to home, but it’s boring you to tears. Start of term is mostly playing getting-to-know-each-other games anyway, and they’re mostly for the teacher’s benefit. Just put our names next to a picture and memorize them at home already. God.

You put some clothes on and head down to the beach. It’s a pleasant day. Gentle wind. The water’s licking the shore. Barely a cloud in the sky. You see something in the sand. Are those...?

“Wh-what are you talking about?! Of COURSE I wear panties. I Know all about your surface customs!”

Your chest is beating like a drum-solo. Calm down, Chinch. Smile. Be confident.

Chinch: “Wow, you are really beautiful.”

She blushes and looks away. You clear your throat.

Chinch: “I mean they look good on you, but… that’s not what panties are for.”

You straighten your back and point your thumb at yourself, trying to show off your biceps. Girls like biceps, right?

Chinch: “Believe me, I’m an expert. I live on both land and sea.”

She stares at you. Flops awkwardly in the sand.

Mermaid: “You’re weird. You live on the surface, but you also live in the sea? And you have wings? Not many under the surface have wings.”

You poke your breathing apparatus. Your stomach is tense with nervousness. You can’t believe you’re actually talking to her.

Chinch: “I actually only breathe water. I have to carry this around when I’m not under the surface.”

Mermaid: “You can’t breathe air yet you live on the surface. You really are strange. I envy you.”

She reaches out and slaps your knee.

Mermaid: “I’ll call you Mr Birdfrog.”

Her hand feels really soft. You wish you’d worn shorts today so she’d’ve touched your leg unprotected.

Chinch: “Birdfrog?”

Mermaid: “Since you’re a water creature but also a surface creature. And you have legs. And you have wings.”

You think to yourself: Maybe I should’ve told her my name. This is probably going to stick now.

Chinch: “Well, you live underwater even though you can breathe air, so we’re similar that way. I’ll call you Humanfish then? Just kidding. I’m Chinch.”

You offer her your hand. She shakes it vigorously.

Mermaid: “I’m Táril.”

You’re grateful that she’s already wet so she won’t notice how sweaty your palms are.

Chinch: “Is it hard for you to move around on land? I could carry you.”

Táril: “I’m… yes maybe, yeah. Okay.”

You kneel and put your arms around her. She smells like the sea, like salt and seaweed and sulphur. She leans against you as you lift, stroking your water bubble. You remember the first time you saw her. Sunset. Years ago. A voice like heaven from a cliff in the water. You were walking along the beach then too. You heard it. It moved you to tears. You can’t believe you’re holding her in your arms. This cannot be real.

She looks at you, then averts her eyes. You swallow.

Chinch: “So, um… would you like me to take you back to the water.”

Táril: “I…”

An old man with a beard and a fishing rod is standing mere meters away from you. He’s withdrawing what looks like a wand from his cloak.

Man: “They call me the FISHERMAN!”

He gestures dramatically.

Fisherman: “THOSE WERE INDEED my panties. Which I had PLANTED to lure the mermaid to land! They are DREADFULLY DIFFICULT to catch in the water! I had hoped you’d walk away before I had to reveal myself, but you were about to RUIN EVERYTHING!”

You glance at Táril. She looks terrified. Does she know this man? You try to sound as hard as possible, but your voice breaks mid sentence.

Chinch: “Why are you hunting mermaids?”

Fisherman: “They say EATING one makes you IMMORTAL, son! Everyone knows this, but it’s never been proven! I’ve already eaten two mermaids, but I’m not sure if they were cooked right and I’m not sure how to test immortality without actually trying to KILL myself. So I figure third time’s the CHARM, eh? We don’t have to fight. You can have half. Maybe you’ll be immortal too.”

Chinch: “I wish you didn’t need to see this, Táril. Stay behind me. I’ll protect you.”

You turn around and crack your knuckles. You lock eyes with the old man. Then tense your muscles so hard your tshirt flies through the air in tiny scraps.

Chinch: “You said you were IMMORTAL!!”

His eyes close. He slumps over your arm. Is he dead? It’s not like he was a good guy. He was a threat to the mermaids, whether or not Táril is safe now. Táril. Fuck. She shouldn’t see you like this. You pull your arm out. He falls to the ground. Turn around. She’s waving at you. How is she unfazed by this? You shiver unintentionally.

Táril: “I don’t know. I know there were stories, but they could just be about the man you beat.”

Chinch: “So, um… how about a... victory smooch... on the cheek?”

Your voice breaks a little. You awkwardly turn your head and present your cheek. You’re blushing hard. Dammit, if only you were smooth.

Táril: “Maybe later. First we’ll bring his body to my sisters.”

You throw the body over your shoulder and step into the water.

Chinch: “What are your sisters going to do with it anyway?”

Táril: “We’ll make sure he doesn’t come back.”

You raise your eyebrows and blink.

Chinch: “Uhm, you might want to take the panties off by the way. I’m not sure I trust anything that man’s been touching.”

Táril: “*sigh* fine.”

She pulls the panties off, bunch them up into a small ball, throws them back on the beach. You make a mental note to burn them when you return. You close your eyes and lean into the water, pulling your neck-bubble off and attaching it to your belt, pushing the old man in front of you. The wild seawater flows through your neck. It’s like you’ve been breathing through a bag and it’s finally been removed. When you open them, Táril meets your eyes and smiles. With a snap of her tailfin, she’s off. The deeper you go, the more lightless. She sings to help you navigate. Even though she’s clearly holding back for you, she’s still moving uncomfortably fast. Especially with this old man’s body, you’re really struggling to match her speed.

Then she stops. She points behind you. You don’t have to see it - you can taste it in the water from the moment you decelerated. The trail of blood from the body must be like a symphony of dinner bells to any sharks in a wide radius. You’re deep underwater. It’s too dark to see. Did she see anything approaching? You feel the current of someone swooshing past you. A trail of red hair. Táril. A distant series of noises. She returns, facing you, smiling. You attempt to speak, but you’re still unused to speaking underwater and it comes out as gibberish. She giggles and swims past you again. You follow. Deeper and deeper. Then you see it. Beyond a reef, well over a kilometer underwater. Shining through the deep sea darkness. A light in a cave. The sound of voices. Táril stops and points. You nod to show that you understand.

Three of her sisters come swimming out as you approach, as if summoned by her song. Or so you assume - your eyes are still getting used to the pale underwater light and you can’t really tell what they look like. They see the old man’s body and immediately snatch it away from you. They take it to the cave. Surrounded by luminescent plants, they start eating him. You look towards Táril. She smiles, nods, then turns to her sisters.

Táril: “Sisters! This is Chinch. He’s the friend who slew the manbeast. Chinch, these are my sisters - Láfi, Ídra, and Ýla.”

All three look up, bits of the old man still in their mouths. Ídra swallows before she speaks.

Ídra: “Do you want to join the ritual, friend Chinch? We’ll let you eat the best parts.”

Chinch: “Thanks, but I’m just here to make sure Táril gets home safely. Are you eating too, Táril?”

She floats through the near-dark of the luminescent cave. It’s too dark to really see her face. Her body is easier to follow. She’s so agile in the water. You wish you could swim half as well.

Táril: “I usually do, but maybe not now.”

She swims closer and takes your hand.

Táril: “I said I’d show you where I live.”

Ýla: “You’re missing out!”

Táril: “I’ll leave the manbeast in your care, sisters. Please enjoy yourselves.”

Láfi: “Watch out, Chinch. I think she likes you.”

Táril: “Shush!”

The sisters laugh. Táril leads you by the hand. Deeper, through darkness after darkness. You find yourself wondering if her ability to see through this lack of light is genetic or if it could be acquired by living here long enough. You swim through a field of seaweed. You see another light. The water feels warmer. A pocket of heat in an underwater cave system. Volcanic? Magical? She pulls you around a corner, through a short corridor. A room? It’s not big, but cozy. There’s something like a bed in the corner. There are various items scattered along the walls. Some look like instruments. There’s a stone statue opposite the bed. Muscular human in a heroic pose. Probably scavenged from things dropped at sea.

She turns around to face you. In the low-light of the room, her face is finally close enough for you to make out her features. She’s smiling, her non-handholding hand messing with her hair. She doesn’t make eye contact.

Táril: “So this is my room. Do you, eh… like it?”

She cringes a little bit and laughs.

Táril: “That is such a corny line.”

You squirm and look away. She puts her hand on your shoulder.

Táril: “Hey…”

She rests her body against yours. Her hair billows like a red cloud around her face. Your body tenses. Every part of your skin she touches feels like a thousand small explosions.

Táril: “Do you… still want that kiss?”

Your nod is almost a shiver. Her breathless lips on yours. Then everything is silent. You’re blind to time. Hours or minutes or seconds pass. At some point she sings to you. An old song in a foreign tongue. She says it’s about a girl who falls in love with a sailor and dies crawling across the surface trying to find him, never returning to the sea. You kiss. Her skin is smooth and slippery. Your heart is beating like it’s trying to break out of your chest. She strokes the fur on your neck and shoulder. You kiss. You ask her about her life. She tells you she goes to an underwater music school, training to be a court singer. She says she enjoys it, but not as much as this. You kiss.

You hear her sister’s voice from the end of the corridor. Probably trying to respect your privacy.

Ýla: “It’s way past sundown, you two. Does Chinch the surfacer have anywhere to be?”

Táril opens her eyes.

Táril: “I can show you the way, but… I’ll be sad to see you go.”

You suddenly remember your parents. You never told them where you were going. Are they worried? Did they contact your school? How late IS it anyway? You meet Táril’s gaze. You lose yourself for a moment in her dilated pupils. You feel your worries melt away.

Cheechong: “Hey, you said I could establish temporary individual psychic links with willing targets as well, right? How do I link with my brother?”

You can’t hear the answer, but Cheechong soon turns his faces back to you.

Cheechong: “So you need to be in a trance state while focusing on your acceptance of my psychic link. I’ll send an astral signal. All you need to do is receive.”

Chinch: “How… do I do that?”

Cheechong: “You don’t really meditate or the like, do you? Doubt mum and dad would let you fast or take drugs or anything.”

Mother: “We know you mean well, Cheechong, but you really shouldn’t be recommending drug addiction and eating disorders to your brother.”

Cheechong: “I know I know. Hey, you know what, Chinch. Maybe just dance and chant really hard until you’re about to drop?”

Chinch: “Chant?”

Cheechong: “Yeah yeah, just go ‘Cheech and Chong, I accept’ over and over again. It might take a little longer since you’re not used to magic, but it should get you there eventually. Especially if you dance or drum or something.”

Chinch: “If you say so, brother.”

You look at your parents. They shrug. You run back to your room. You take a deep breath from your water-tank. Dance, he says? You spread your arms, twirl, step. You build a storm of movement in your body.

Chinch: “Cheech and Chong, I accept! Cheech and Chong, I accept! Cheech and Chong, I accept! Cheech and Chong, I ACCEPT!!”

You feel a sweat starting. You close your eyes.

Chinch: “Cheech and Chong, I accept! Cheech and Chong, I accept! Cheech and Chong, I accept!”

Your body moves as if on its own. You feel unheard music pumping through your muscles. You grab your desk and tremble.

Cheechong: “Chinch?”

Chinch: “I accept!”

Cheechong crashes into your mind like a lightning bolt. Goosebumps break out across your skin. For an instant, you want to scream, but you don’t, then the calm comes. Gentle like a summer’s swim. The world feels somehow quieter, more subdued. You hear Cheechong’s voices booming in your mind as if coming from within your head itself.

Cheechong: “That should do it. Can you hear me?”

You try to speak, but it’s like your tongue won’t move.

Cheechong: “You need to project your voice inwards. Try to shape the sounds in your mind.”

You force the realignment. You speak unspeaking.

Chinch: “I speak.”

Cheechong: “I hear you. So what’s up?”

for a moment there I went in panic because I thought the picture showed our tank broken

"So, do you know that crush I always talked about? the mermaid, we talked today and we really hit it off! she is beautyful fun and her lips are....hrrmmm...sorry.....what I wanted to ask, since you are smart and all, is what do you know about mermaids, their culture, habits, what I should look out for and all that..."

Cheechong: “I dunno, bro. I guess speaking like regular is easier.”

>>3864190
Cheechong: “Honestly I don’t really know much about mermaids. I can check the library. I’m glad things are working out for you anyway. I can try to contact you again tomorrow evening. Maybe try not to do anything too risky before then?”

Your brother goes quiet for a moment.

Cheechong: “Sorry, Chinch, I’ve gotta go. Tomorrow, ok?”

Chinch: “Yeah. Sure. Do I still have to do the whole dance trance thing?”

Cheechong: “Yeah, but now you’ll be able to sense that I’m trying to contact you before you start, since there’s already a link.”

Chinch: “Ok.”

Cheechong: “Good luck. We’ll speak tomorrow.”

Chinch: “Bye, bro.”

Sudden silence. Then the world seems less muted. It’s like you’ve emerged from a pillow. Your parents are still in the living room. You’re not even that hungry, but realize you should probably eat something. You put a new shirt on and head for the kitchen. You wonder what you and Táril will get up to tomorrow.
