Henry and the Gang prepare to invade the ooze den. Will they succeed or die horribly?

Quest rules:
1. All dice rolled are assumed to be D100 unless otherwise stated
2. The first two rolls will be given far greater importance, but additional rolls, good or bad, will affect the outcome. This choice ultimately falls to the Lorekeeper, odd circumstances may cause him to change how the story progresses (a ton of crits for instance)
3. All dice rolls are final
4. Critical fails are considered to be between 1-5, Critical hits are between 95-100. Crits overpower any other roll except another crit. In the rare chance that a crit fail and crit success happen. The Lorekeeper will do something interesting from a story angle. Similarly, rolling 2 of the same number will be considered a MEGA crit, just pray its two high numbers.
5. Near misses may occur, where a rolled number is close to the required threshold, whether over or under. This can have an impact on how the story proceeds. However these are up to the decision of the Lorekeeper.
6. Sometimes there are optional choices one may participate in, these will generally NOT be taken unless there are multiple posters who wish it, assuming there are multiple posters in the thread
7. There are often times choices with multiple parts, each part is counted separately, unless otherwise stated, sometimes rolls will be required before counting the second, third, etc, part
8. There will be “Time Limited” decisions, in which characters may only do a set number of actions, these will be clearly marked. Generally you will only be able to choose one decision per ‘round’.
9. Rules may be subject to change between threads, but will not change during the same thread. These rules are what we will follow for the remainder of this thread.

“NO! No, no I wasn’t.” Henry said.

“Don’t you dare try to lie.” Rosa said, tearfully.

“I… I’m not.” Henry said, uncertain.

Had he been trying to? This was his new family, right? He couldn’t… no he really couldn’t. He wouldn’t.

Rosa shivered and looked around, then stared Henry down.

“God punishes us in ways we deserve Henry. But guilt is far worse than anything he can dish out.” Rosa said.
>>
>>3836010
“Look Rosa, I love you and believe it or not I care about my team. I need you and we need you.”

“The team?” Rosa asked.

“I’ll be honest Rosa, besides Charles, I don’t know if I can call anyone else in that room my family, yet. I want to-“

“Then start by trusting me, you can tell me things!” Rosa said.

No he really couldn’t.

“I… alright. Fine, I believed that our employer was altogether unimportant but perhaps that was not a favorable approach.” Henry said.

“I’d ask you to just admit you were wrong but that’s not going to happen. It’s a start, at least.” Rosa said.

“So you’re not leaving?” Henry asked.

“No, Henry, of course not. Those things need to be dealt with, I just believe we should deal with YOUR employers as well, this sort of incident… have these things killed anyone, Henry?”

“Not to my knowledge.” Henry said. It wasn’t like he really cared about the deaths of people he’d never even met.

“Of course.” Rosa replied.

“Look, if there are any research materials, or incriminating evidence, we can turn them over to the church. Just keep quiet about it when we do, okay?” Henry asked.

“Really? They’d just leave something that important in a cave?” Rosa asked.

“You never know, from what I understand things happened pretty fast before they were brought back under control.”

As Henry headed back inside, he saw something glinting from the roof. Two eyes focused on him like a hawk. It took him a moment in the fading sunlight to recognize that it was Xavier wearing a large hood. Not like he even needed it at this time of day, the sunlight wasn’t even strong enough to kill him at this time. Though it wouldn’t exactly be pleasant.

Inside chatter had started back up, which mainly consisted of Charles asking Alice questions about how her carapace fit together. Henry got to the table as Larry joked about how Charles was learning about the female form. Henry nearly gagged at the thought.

“Everyone understand what you need to do?”

“Kill a bunch of stuff!” Larry said.

“I believe Larry summed it up quite well.” Xavier said, strolling into the room. Henry hadn’t even heard him jump from the roof, which unnerved him.

“No, no no no. I’m not going to have another harebrained plan like last time!” Ophelia said. “No!”

“I’m with Ophelia, we need to figure out what we’re going to do, we need better equipment then just the oil and a single flame-caster.” Alice said.

“The less injured people the better, so let’s figure out a way for everyone to contribute, yes?” Rosa said, although it was strained.
“I’d like to help!” Charles insisted.

“Rosa, Ophelia. You’re going to act as rear guards. Rosa can use protection magic and Ophelia can use scrying magic so that should cover our vision and defenses. Xavier, Larry, you’ll be vanguards while me and Charles will be in the center. We will lay bomb rune traps at corridors so we don’t get surprised. We will need to make sure we don’t get surrounded since we don’t have the numbers to just overwhelm them. The prototype ballistae here will be used to kill the queen, we just need to ensure that there is enough light. We have a limited timeframe to fulfill the contract so we can’t really do a lot of testing.”

“And me?” Alice asked.

“I want you to act as over watch and relay with Ophelia. Your flight magic would be useless in those tunnels and from what I understand your skill set isn’t combat focused. Ophelia you can use thought magic correct? Can you keep in contact with Alice so we can know what’s going on outside?”

“Yes, we’ve already practiced with that, it’s just… it isn’t exactly pleasant to be bundled up with another mind for too long, so it won’t be a constant feed. Alice can you craft up some runes to act as signals so we can find each other easier?” Ophelia asked.

“Yes, of course.” Alice said. “Consider it done. What should I be on the lookout for?“

“Larry, Xavier, I want you to conserve mana as much as possible down there. If we run dry too soon we’ll likely end up dead so I need you to cool it.”

“Don’t lump me in with him. I’ve seen newbloods with more self-control.” Xavier said.

Henry glanced at Rosa and continued on after she didn’t react.

“It’ll be fine chief. I’m gonna bag me something nasty tomorrow.” Larry said.

“Charles, I’m going to buy a high powered light rune tomorrow, I want you to use it and make sure we have constant light, alright? This is incredibly important.”

“Yes sir! Thank you!” Charles said. Henry didn’t even feel like complaining about how he’d called him sir.

“Right, Alice, Ophelia. Gather as many bomb runes as we can carry and maybe some flame runes too. We’re going to need everything we can get on this. Charles, Xavier, make sure we have good light sources. Larry, get ready to kill a LOT of shit.”

“Fuck yeah that’s a speech!” Larry said.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Henry returned to his room and thought to himself what he needed to do going into tomorrow. He’d talked to Charles about having dead rats strapped with bomb runes and the boy was on board. It’d give the kid something to defend himself if the worst happened. Johnny would’ve never allowed the boy to accompany them on this mission but what the skeleton didn’t know wouldn’t hurt Henry’s ears.

“Henry?” Rosa asked. sitting up.

“Rosa?” Henry asked, when had she gotten there?

“Where were you?” Rosa asked.

“Does it matter? What are you doing here, is this going to be a regular occurrence?” Henry asked.

“Hopefully?” Rosa said, shying away slightly.

“Look, I’m too tired to argue, just let me go to sleep.” Henry said.

Henry slept and dreamt of smoke, and woke up to find Rosa’s head on his chest. Fantastic.

Breakfast was had, final prep was made, and the group set off. The trip lasted around and hour and a half and the sun was fully out by the time they arrived. Xavier kept complaining how uncomfortable traveling with covering clothes in the middle of summer was. Henry quietly retorted that the vampire shouldn’t even be bothered by the heat and that he should stop complaining.

Larry was giddy but far less than Henry had expected. It seemed the battle with Del Mar had tempered the man’s enthusiasm slightly. Ophelia was a bundle of nerves, constantly muttering about how she was going to sustain yet another injury and how it was going to be her face again. Alice was eerily quiet. Charles practiced his mage sight and read from a book in the back of the rented ox cart. The driver wisely said nothing. He was affiliated with the Cult and knew better than to ask stupid questions.

The group arrived and Alice quickly rose into the air, the illusion hiding her true form holding for the time being. The veins of blue mana flowed out from her hands and her hidden wings allowed her to more easily move through the air. She set a stable flight path above the giant hill of dirt that stretched in front of them. There were a couple groups of cult mages milling about who were likely the people making sure the mound didn’t grow out of control. Henry asked them some brief questions about angelic flight paths and church response times and received satisfactory answers. This location was so far out of the way that angels only patrolled through here once a day, and that had gotten spotty in the past few weeks. Henry smiled; at least the church wouldn’t get involved in their bug hunt.

In front of them the pockmarked hill rose out of the ground like a giant wedge of cheese, holes dotted along its surface. Xavier, Charles, Ophelia, Larry, and a uncertain Rosa were all ready to go. Ophelia hefted her flame-caster with a grunt. Larry, Henry and Xavier checked over their newly purchased weaponry and Charles checked the surprise in his pack. It was time to move.

Before descending down into the tunnels, Ophelia performed a couple of simple scrying spells, which gave her vanishingly little information. She said that there was a great deal of movement down there, and that there were plenty of large chambers and connecting passages, yet nothing high in magical power or ability, thankfully. Then she pulled out the gold owl statue she had kept on her person and channeled some blue mana into it, which was quickly converted into green mana. A translucencent owl emerged and descended into one of the tunnels.

“That’s… interesting.” Rosa muttered, flashing Henry another glance.

“It’s just a fancy charm she carries around.” Henry replied. “Don’t get any silly ideas.”

“Around fifty of them in the initial entry chamber, about ten biters all clustered down there, nothing we can’t handle.” Ophelia said. “I see a couple of spikey ones too, and a couple of weird ones which are bulging all over. I tried going further in but something consumed the owl’s mana.” Ophelia said.

“It’s better than nothing.” Henry said.”

“All the tunnels lead to an entry chamber.” Ophelia said.

“Makes sense, the cults been closing up any new ones that have been made.” Henry replied.

Decisions:
1. *head on in with the attackers in the front*

The plan moved forwards, with Larry and Xavier at the front, Rosa and Charles in the middle, and with Ophelia and Henry in the rear. Of the six of them, only Xavier and Henry had any real experience using spears. Larry stuck to his flame blade while Charles and Rosa kept daggers at the read. Rosa explained that she wanted to leave one of her hands free in case spells were needed. The group quickly dispatched a couple of drone oozes near the entrance and managed to kill a few of the biters before they even realized there were intruders.
Gaining entry was fairly easy and it was a bit intimidating just how large the tunnels were. Henry was having no issues standing at his full height although the tunnels would restrict overhand swings. He hoped Larry would remember that. Xavier and Henry held shields which would hopefully block any attacks launched at them. Larry had again refused to handle a shield and Ophelia had been unable to even lift a shield for very long.

>current kill count, 7

The first large chamber they came to was easily the size of a large house. There were all sorts of ooze squirming below and what looked to be a collection of large fungi being harvested. It seemed the ooze were in the process of growing them for food. The fungi emitted a small amount of red light which gave the entire thing an ominous air.

As for the slimes, Henry could see around one hundred of them in the chamber. The majority being drones. There were a couple of spiky ones, and around twelve biters as well. There were a few black ones as well which Ophelia pointed out as having been the ones who had destroyed her manifested owl.

Decisions:
1. *lob bomb runes down into the chamber*

Try making some thumping vibrations and see how many respond? Lay out meat to entice them? Flash light at them if any can see in the spectrum? Maybe we can even accidentally learn to communicate if any are sentient.

Maybe regardless lay some runes to act as traps we can retreat behind if too many come at us?

The group quickly came up with a plan, and set up a couple of bomb runes along the path that wound down along the wall to the bottom level where the majority of the slimes wriggled around. The group got ready and Ophelia quickly explained that light would be the best method to draw specific slimes in. If they did it properly then only the biters and spikys would be drawn in while the normal drones would remain oblivious. Ophelia explained that the drones were far simpler and displayed far simpler behavior patterns. Thus they really were mostly harmless.

The plan was set in motion, light was shined at the biters and other denizens of the pit. The slimes were drawn up in a couple of clumps which landed right on top of the bomb runes, which dealt with the vast majority of them. The noise did echo around a bit but from what Henry could tell nothing was drawn into the chamber. By the time they’d finished all of the hostile ooze were dead and they could move onto the drones.

What followed next was a wholesale slaughter of drones. The only hitch came when a couple of drones began to fuse together, but that was quickly stopped by a clean cut from Larry. Henry breathed a sigh of relief once it was all over. They’d cleared the room and had managed to take no causalities. Maybe things would go alright. He noticed that the black slimes had retreated; perhaps they had more intelligence than expected?

Larry and Xavier guarded the paths that led deeper into the hive while the group waited on Henry to give them the next order.

Henry took out the wooden three dimensional map and held it up to the light, the thing was incredibly unwieldly but gave them a fairly good idea of how the tunnel system looked. Its only downside was that it told them nothing about what each room contained or if any new rooms had been recently built, but it seemed fairly accurate. The side paths from the growing room were all in the correct places, and it seemed that their goal was a large central chamber a good ways below where they were.

“Henry, there are a couple holes in the walls!” Charles said, his headlamp illuminating a few slots in the walls.

“Right. Larry, Xavier, be careful!” Henry called out.

“Ophelia, could you take some samples of the fungus and the dead slimes?”

“I already did! But… oh I could take more!” Ophelia said, giggling like a maniac. Henry shuddered as the woman gleefully scooped up the muck that the slimes had left behind.

“They really are alcohol based!” Ophelia said.

“Can we get drunk off of them?” Larry asked.

“Please don’t, I don’t like healing people who throw themselves into harm’s way.” Rosa said, shooting Henry a couple of looks.

Henry glanced over the drone slimes that had begun to fuse together, the only real difference was that the mess was double the size of the others. Whatever would’ve formed would’ve likely just been bigger than before. He made sure Ophelia grabbed a vial of the stuff regardless.

“Oy, I see movement!” Larry said, before ducking out of the way.

A couple of blobs shot past and splattered on the wall. The things squirmed and revealed themselves to be miniature slimes, which were desperately trying to unstick themselves. The things were about the size of Henry’s hand and utterly disgusting. They were followed by several biters leaping through the darkened tunnel, teeth extended and swirling over their membrane. Xavier blocked one and gasped as the thing sent sparks flying from his metallic shield.

Decisions:
1. *Retreat up the central corridor towards the surface, it should be easier to defend, but will leave you vulnerable while retreating*

The group swiftly retreated up the corridor. Larry had to lift Ophelia up over his shoulder and fireman’s carry her to get her to leave some of her equipment in the rush to escape the onslaught. Around seventy slimes emerged from both the tunnels and from the openings in the wall that Charles’ had discovered. The black ones from before began spitting more miniature slimes at them. Xavier and Henry blocked a few with their shields and quickly discovered that they were far heavier than they looked. Rosa chanted some kind of prayer as the group managed to reach the ramp back to the surface.

Several of the black slimes clumped together and began pulsing with a blue light. A few of the bitters approached the mass and were launched up into the air at Henry and his group as a form of living artillery. The biters changed their shapes into something resembling arrowheads all to fly better in the air. In the meantime a wall of drones emerged from the tunnel and charged forwards, not really all that menacing, but they acted as a shield for the more complex units.

“ROSA!” Henry yelled, pointing at the incoming slimes.

Rosa wasted no time at all, managing to call up a shield of white mana right as the slimes landed. The biters harmlessly bounced off the barrier and fell to the ground, then immediately began launching themselves at it. Rosa shivered in fear and covered her ears while the group continued their ascent to a more defendable position. The biters ceased their pursuit and regrouped with the swarm. The black slimes continued to pelt them with their spawn while the wall of drones began to advance with the more complex units hiding behind them.

Charles grabbed a couple shine runes and began placing them around the platform that the group found themselves on. He then proceeded to aim a few shine runes at the advancing slimes, giving good visibility to the group.

Henry and Larry wedged the shields into the ground to use as a make shift barricade and got their plan of attack ready.

But we need Rosa to have white mana for heals in case we fuck up, right? One shield is 2 white mana from Rosa, mana that WON'T be going towards heals. I say shields and spears, target the biters first to conserve as much as possible?

How many actual bomb runes do we have?
How many slimes are there in this big group? because this:

you have 32 bomb runes,

the group consists of around 70 complex slimes and about one hundred drones.

Save flame runes for Slime Queen. I feel like bomb runes are dirt cheap for us, which is great because blowing stuff up is always good and fun. Focus on sending drones into disarray and rush the biters down ASAP before they can get any one of us. Hope none of the drones get the idea to merge up or whatever.

“THROW BOMB RUNES!” Henry yelled.

Larry and Xavier immediately grabbed their slings and placed bomb runes into them while Ophelia fiddled around with hers. Henry launched his first and managed to take out a nice chunk of the drone wall. Xavier and Larry’s followed shortly thereafter, detonating more chunks away from the wall and causing the entire structure to wobble menacingly. Ophelia flung hers off last and scored a direct hit, with the rune burying itself into the structure. The thing exploded with a wet plopping noise and several biters exploded into a blue paste to go along with the green paste from the drones.

> 80 drones dead
>3 biters dead
>20 drones, 32 biters, 15 spikers, and 15 launchers remaining
> - 4 bomb runes

Henry smiled at the collapse of the barricade, now they could start whittling away at the remaining ooze. That lasted until the entire swarm suddenly froze up, then undulated, then charged forwards, with the biters and drones taking up the front lines now and the spiky’s following closely behind. They would be able to get one more volley of bomb runes off before they risked friendly fire. They had to make this count.

Decisions: (Pick one)
1. *fire off one more volley of bomb runes at the advancing biters and drones*
2. *retreat back towards the entrance, leaving your shields behind and your backs potentially exposed*
3. *cast some spells* (will lead to another menu)

Optional:
1. *Have Rosa create a barrier of white mana* (will cost 2.5 white mana, last 2 turns, and exhaust Rosa, knocking her out of the fight)
2. *Have Ophelia attempt to seize control of some of the spikeys* (failure will result in temporary insanity on Ophelia’s part)
3. *have Charles fall back, he’s as good as useless here*

“ANOTHER VOLLEY!” Henry shouted, and miraculously, everyone obliged.

Henry launched his first, it landed square in the middle of a group of biters and by the time Henry had blinked all that was left were a few blue stains. Xavier and Larry threw theirs off next. The two bomb runes hurtled into a pack of drones and biters respectively, going off and decimating their ranks. Ophelia tossed hers and it landed a bit too far, detonating and taking out several more biters and one of the spikeys, although it was fairly obvious the things were a good deal tougher than the biters.

>28 biters, 20 drones, 1 spiky dead.
>4 biters, 14 spikys, 15 launchers remaining.

“We got em on the run!” Larry yelled, before ducking to avoid a shot from one of the black slimes.

“They don’t have morale damn it!” Xavier said, unsheathing his sword and preparing to deal with the remaining stragglers.

Ophelia pulled out the rapier than Henry had bought her while Charles fumbled on the ground with their supplies. He pulled out something and ran back over towards the shields. Henry yelled at him but the boy didn’t listen, dropped the small barrel full of whale oil on the ground and smiling at Henry.

“Fucking hell, get back everyone!” Henry said, grabbing a flame rune from his pouches and slamming a dagger down into the top of the cask. He kicked it down the ramp towards the slimes, and lit the trail with the flame rune. He had to quickly leap to safety as a large fireball emanated out from the oil, coating the shields in sticky flames and making the affected area a temporary death trap. There was a loud crackle as the charging biters were immediately consumed by the flames. The charred and blackened bodies of dead and soon to be dead slimes dotted the cliff as a few unlucky spikys began to go up in flames too. The smart ones began to cling onto the wall and slowly make their way over the fire while the surviving launchers began to line up on the other end of the flames.

“We’ve almost done it!” Henry yelled.

Larry and Xavier grabbed their spears and began to poke at the incoming spikys, they managed to take several down outright and knock a few more into the fire where they were quickly consumed. Ophelia placed another bomb rune into her sling until Henry stopped her. He told her to use her brain and that it’d be too close. The woman looked surprised before her usual annoyed face returned.

“Fall back!” Henry said. “Let the spikys come through, we’ll nail em then! Ophelia, check for reinforcements, Rosa, watch Charles!” Henry said.

Xavier and Larry fell back right as the spiky’s began to drop back down onto the path and roll towards the shield barrier. Xavier managed to clip one of them and puncture it as it attacked. The things didn’t lunge forwards, only rolled threateningly.

“Yeah they’re massing down below, but there are a couple of big ones.” Ophelia said. “Around… I don’t know, seventy? That’s got to be the remaining swarm.”

“I hope!” Henry said, using his sword to bat aside a couple of spikys. The things attempted to ram him a couple of times but he found he could easily swat them aside with his blade. The issue was that the spiky portions were completely unharmed. Only by spearing them could they actually kill them.

Rosa knelt down with Charles and prayed, she didn’t really know what else do to. Charles grit his teeth and clutched as his dagger. He wanted to rush in and help but Rosa wouldn’t let go of him. Rosa tried to explain but he wasn’t hearing any of it, all he could see were a few brave men trying to kill a bunch of monsters and he couldn’t do a damned thing.

Henry backed away as a couple spiky’s rushed him. He realized with a start that he had run out of room and his back was facing a sheer drop to the mushroom farm below. He held up his sword and managed to bat one of them over the edge but he’d left himself open to another. He began to cast a spell but in the split second before impact realized he didn’t have enough time.

The spiky stopped in midair and deflated as Henry slowly registered the spear that had pierced it.’

“You okay?!” Larry asked. “Fuckin hell you can’t get distracted like that mate, we need you alive to do all the thinking!”

“Thanks.” Henry said.

>5 Spikys dead
>3 spikys remaining
>fire barrier gone

From his vantage point he watched as the remaining slimes retreated back down the cliffside. He considered pursuing them but he knew that they were massing another wave. It was time to regroup.

“They’re massing down below!” Ophelia shouted. “We don’t have much time!”

Now that they're massed again, Larry haste himself and Xavier to boost his vamp speed, Henry does Defenders Sword and Shield, Johnny, Larry, Xavier, and Henry charge. Charles and Ophelia preceed the charge with bomb runes.

Henry and Johnny act as tanks and push a hole through the remaining defenders to let Larry and Xavier hit the launchers, their haste allowing them to fall back if necessary or to stay and we can push the remaining slimes between us.

If shit goes bad, Henry has enough left over to give Johnny lightning claws to let him shred through remaining slimes.

Honestly, I think we should bring Rosa on fewer missions because it REALLY cramps out Necromancy. I know she's the waifu and healer, but Charles can use white mana and we could have sent a bunch of rats in to explode inside key slimes from a safe distance.

Not a fan of these slug 'em out fights. Healing is kinda shit in the setting and we nearly died, Ophelia nearly died last time very fast.

Anyways, once we are facing a manageable number of slimes Ophelia can try to mind rape a surviving slime. Ideally one of the more complex ones.

Larry, Xavier, I think we should head down the ramp and try and thin their numbers, then retreat back up if we get swarmed too bad. Ophelia I want you to lay down covering fire with your bomb runes.” Henry said.

“Right.” Larry replied, readying himself.

“Xavier.. can you move… freely, down there?” Henry asked, staring off into the dark, the only light source besides the light runes was weak sunlight filtering from the entrance and the blue glow off the mushrooms.

“Yes, but don’t expect too much from me, I’m not all that old, Henry.” Xavier replied.

“Well whatever you can manage, I know you can move better than me or Larry here.”

“Like hell he can.” Larry called back.

“Charles, keep the light runes focused on the swarm so we can see. I’m going to grab a couple as well.” Henry said, handing a few out to Xavier and Larry. Xavier grimaced in pain upon touching them, the stored sunlight was uncomfortable for him.

The trio made their way quickly down the ramp, finishing off any slimes that were wounded and pressing forwards quickly. At the bottom Henry noticed that the remaining slimes had begun to clear the ooze corpses away. There was an uneasy silence beyond the occasional glorp of a drone.

Henry and Xavier quickly got to work laying the bomb runes down. Larry waffled around like he didn’t know what he was doing, which was exactly the case, he had no idea how to handle bomb runes properly. Henry sighed, of course Larry wouldn’t know, he had very little actual magical training, most of what he did was innate. Ophelia and Henry were self-taught while Xavier had church training. He grabbed the bomb runes out of Larrys hands and placed them around, which took a bit longer but was done smoothly. All the while Xavier mentioned that there was movement from a couple of the side tunnels. Eventually the second wave emerged. Two large gray slimes flanked by a single much smaller blue/green one emerged.

> 10 bomb rune mines laid out, 1 in hand, remaining bomb runes with Ophelia and supplies

Henry immediately realized something was wrong when a trail of mana shot off the slime and aimed at the bomb rune in his hand. He had to quickly fight the thing off to prevent rune from chunking his arm. A squadron of biters emerged flanked by drones and the remaining launcher oozes, yet no sign of the queen. Henry counted about seventy slimes and it seemed like they were being more cautious. The two gray slimes were massive enough to consume a human and had a mass of small noodle like appendages hanging off of their bodies

>Enemy Forces
>2 grays, 1 mage slime, 50 drones, 20 biters, 25 launchers

Henry made the split second decision to chuck his bomb rune at the encroaching forces and sighed as the thing detonated short, only taking out a couple drones

>2 drones killed

1. Immediately fall back, you’re out gunned here (won’t be able to set off bomb rune traps)

The drones rushed forwards first, followed closely behind by the biters. From what Henry could tell these two units were far more disposable than the others based on how ready they were to throw themselves into harm’s way. Henry got ready to release the bomb runes when several of them went off, it took Henry a split second to realize what had happened, the mage slime or whatever it was had set the damned things off. A few drones had been hit of course but none of the biters had been damaged. Henry grit his teeth, fought off a couple quick attempts at detonation from the mage slime, and then set off the remaining bomb runes, slaughtering a good chunk of the assaulting forces.

>35 drones, 14 biters killer
>2 grays, 1 mage slime, 13 drones, 6 biters, 25 launchers remaining

Henry ducked as several pieces of gunk sailed over his head and splattered on the ground behind him. To his shock the things began to wiggle around. They were miniature slimes.

The group made their way up the cliff rapidly. Henry turned back to find that the remaining biters and Drones were hot on their trail, while the launchers followed from a safe distance. The bastards attempted to pelt them with gunk and trip them up. Larry swore as several thunked against his shield and he swore again when he realized just how heavy that made things. The man had enough sense to not pick at the things, as they seemed rather stuck to the shield.

A couple of bangs emanated behind them as a few more bomb runes went off. Ophelia waved at them as she loaded a third bomb rune into her sling. By the time they reached the outcropping she’d managed to thin the slimes numbers some more.

Henry looked over at the rapidly approaching slimes and began to put a plan together, rifling through the remaining supplies and weaponry. He watched as Larry grabbed a flame rune and used it to burn off the gunk stuck to his shield. All that remained after were a couple of blackened patches.

“I’m going to attack the mage slime.” Ophelia said, gathering mana together for a bolt spell.”

“You can’t seriously expect to hit it at this range Ophelia.” Henry said. “Look we still got a minute or two before they reach us lets figure something out.”

“The woman already has, Henry.” Larry said. “Let’s try hitting those black slimes with bomb runes, we can actually hit the damned cowards from here.”

Henry begin to reply but was interrupted by the firing off of a bolt spell. Henry sighed and expected it to veer off course but amazingly the thing kept on target. Ophelia’s eyes were scrunched in concentration as her hands seemed to keep the spell on target and material. After fifty feet Henry’s eyes widened considerably. He couldn’t manage to keep anything together like that with red mana, let alone keep it on target. The bolt whizzed around, dodging several blue mana shots from the mage slime before one of the gray slimes blocked its path. Ophelia expertly guided the bolt around the gray and into the side of the mage slime. There was a massive bang as the mage slime was thrown into a nearby set of fungi. The thing emerged badly burnt but still somehow alive.

> Mage slime incurs two wounds

“Tsk, the thing has too much internal mana it seems. It was able to dissipate some of the bolt.” Ophelia muttered.

“What?” Henry asked.

“You’ve probably never fought talented mages before, but when people have enough mana in them spells aren’t as effective against them, same reason mental magic is so difficult to perform on mages.” Ophelia said. “That mage slime is going to be tricky to deal with.”

Ophelia was thrown to the ground as Larry tackled her, a split second later a blue mana spell rocketed past and impacted the wall, dissipating.

“Thanks.” Ophelia said, dusting herself off. “I didn’t think it could respond like that.”

“Henry we could try using that spell, you know from the training room.” Rosa said, walking up towards him. “I think I’ll be able to cast it much faster now that I know what to do.”

Henry glanced down at the path as a wave of black slimes slowly approached. The things were no longer clumping up, seeming to have learned from the first wave’s mistakes. The mage slime slowly made its way up the ramp, still smoking from the bolt spell.

We probably need to retreat and regroup with more ammo and weapons and some rest before we try the Combo magic.

“We’re falling back, we need to regroup and resupply.” Henry said. “No sign of the queen but it seems that we’ve thinned their numbers quite a bit.”

“Already!?” Larry whinned.

“I wanted to see the queen.” Ophelia added.

“I think we’ve done quite enough for one day.” Rosa said.

Charles glanced around and then back down the hill, before asking. “Won’t they try to rout us if we run now?”

“No, the grays and mage are too slow while the clotters are cowards.” Henry said. “Rosa can you protect us if we get overrun?”

“I think I can manage.” Rosa said.

The group quickly retreated. As they reached the entrance Henry turned back and saw that the slimes had not gone past the outcropping. Down below in the pit Henry could see a bit of movement, but no more. He was pulled through the entrance by a worried Rosa.

“Oh, welcome back!” One of the cult of progress people said. “We heard a lot of fighting down there, is it safe to go back inside?”

“Fraid not, we cleared out about two hundred of them but they had some bigger things and we don’t know how to deal with them at present, we wanted to resupply.”

“Ah… I’m going to go tell my boss, gimme a second.” The man said.
A bearded and scarred man, wearing a nice set of clothes approached the tired and worn out group. He looked them over and then back at the entrance. They were a good two hundred feet from it but Henry continued to glance over half expecting slimes to swarm out.

“So what’s the reason you stopped early?” The man said, clearly annoyed.

Decisions:
1. “We encountered slimes we hadn’t been informed of in the intel briefing, we decided to temporarily retreat and resupply.”
2. “How I handle the job is up to me, last I checked. Who are you again?”
3. “My people are tired and we don’t need someone chewing us out for it.”
4. “Where can we get more bomb runes?”

>1. “We encountered slimes we hadn’t been informed of in the intel briefing, we decided to temporarily retreat and resupply.”
Wanted to let you know about the newer abnormalities, and they've somehow developed traps consisting of small holes in the wall where small highly sticky slimes hide to ambush unsuspecting exterminators.

“We encountered slimes we hadn’t been informed about during the intel briefing, I decided the best course of action was to retreat, resupply, and observe. The colony itself is badly injured now and we should be able to sweep through.” Henry explained.

“The new forms, that’s news, perhaps they were already there but we couldn’t observe them… regardless, could you describe them to me?”

“A couple of gray ones, bigger than a person, bunch of stringy appendages coming off of them. One of them stepped in front of a bolt spell like it knew it could handle it which worries me. The only other form we noted was a mage of sorts. One of them was able to utilize magic.”

“That’s deeply worrying. I’ll inform the scientists we’ve brought on board. They shouldn’t be able to utilize any sort of magic, merely absorb it. Are you sure it was the only one you’ve seen?” The man asked.

“Positive. Perhaps it’s a rare variant?”

“I’d like you to capture the mage slime alive if at all possible.” The man said. “My name is Thomas Warren, I’m the chief of operations for the Marihe laboratory, I’ve been posted out here to contain the damage.” Thomas explained.

“That the name of the town?” Henry asked.

“Recently abandoned after it got attacked repeatedly by undead.” Thomas explained.

“Yeah I saw a few destroyed settlements on the road, nobody seems to be doing anything about them.”

“Well, that’s why they destroyed Nirdec, isn’t it?” Thomas asked.

“Right…” Henry muttered.

“The only other news is tactics, the slimes displayed a level of tactical ability that was unexpected. It’s like they’re able to receive orders without having to talk, telepathy maybe?”

“They’re linked to their queen, so I’d imagine it’s the queen giving the orders. That’s not surprising.”

Decisions:
1. “Do you have any bomb runes you could spare?”
2. “Could we purchase bomb runes from you?”
3. “Could you give use your bomb runes, consider it a cost of doing business.”
4. “Do you have anyone you could spare? I’d like to have more people.”
5. “Have you seen a flight mage around? Her name is Alice, I didn’t see her around.”

> 1. “Do you have any bomb runes you could spare? Also, any small animals we could sedate and stuff bomb runes into and then use as explosive bait?”

I would like to actually split from Rosa, claim to her that Xavier used vampire or that Ophelia used blue magic powers to control them but actually use undead command to send them after key slimes prior to the attack.

We can also use the bomb runes to cover for sneaking in extra animals and using exploding corpse on them.

We should also make them swallow a bunch of metal or bone or rock bits etc to make extra shrapnel.

“I have a question actually. Do you have any bomb runes you could spare, or pack animals, donkeys maybe?” Henry asked.

“Yeah we have bomb runes for defensive purposes, and a couple donkeys we could part with, specially now with supplies a bit lower than we started out with.” Thomas said, running his hand through his beard. What’re you thinking?”

“I’m thinking we load them up with bomb runes and one of my mages try to control them and throw them at the ooze. If we could load them up with shrapnel it’d be even better. Metal shavings or small pieces of bits and bobs.”

“Smart, wouldn’t work more than once I’d wager, but smart. I got something a bit stronger than bomb runes we could offer, detonation runes, used for mining. The things pack a hell of a wallop but are much pricier.” Thomas said. “Yeah I’d need you to offer up about thirty five silver to cover the costs of the donkey, the supplies, and the two detonation runes.”

“Let me think about it. By the way have you seen a flight mage around, her name is Alice.”

“Yeah we were hoping she was one of yours. She’s been hiding in the cloud cover all day, no idea how the hell she’s managing to stay on target up there, we’re wondering if you have some sort of equipment for it. Some of the boys said that she should be pretty uncomfortable flying at that altitude and speed what with the wind.”

“Trade secret.” Henry said plainly.

Decisions:
1. *tell Ophelia to call Alice down for additional support*
2. “I’d like to purchase everything.”
3. “I’d like to purchase a few of those things” (Write in)
4. “No way all of that costs that much, come on now, you can’t be hurting for cash that badly.” (roll 1d100)

I still say we stealth kill the mule and pack its corpse full of shrapnel.

And just lie to Rosa. Who we love. But will lie to in order to keep things kosher.

We should also get Ophelia to try to vulcan mind meld some slime and see if we can get the Queen to ditch a fake version of herself in return for seeking sanctuary with us. I mean, does the queen even understand individuality or is she going full Enders Game on people?

Irregardless, we should stop bringing Rosa on missions. In my opinion.

Dude how else is Henry going to overcome his uber-PTSD and murder death cult trauma? In this case, Rosa has literally saved Henry's life multiple times AND they have actual chemistry and interactions with each other that is outside basic waifushit. We have plans to get her to know the truth gradually too, so she doesn't go full insane at knowing all the fucked up shit Henry has been through. Probably going to reveal the black mana stuff to Rosa after this slime raid, then one or two cases later pull the N-word reveal. What's so bad about it?

>>3869392
We should get Ophelia to start looting samples off any new slime types we splatted. Those grays and the spikys for instance. The Cult wants that mage slime alive, but I don't know about that. They better offer a fuckton more extra gold for it then, and we should give them the mage slime AFTER Ophelia takes samples from it. Corporate espionage and all that.
