You knew that the solar system wasn't going to last very long. You wanted something better for your family and you made sure you were going to be there for them. You spent a long time getting ready for this. You were 16 when the message hit earth. We know nothing about who sent it to us, or even if it was for us to begin with.

You spent the next 8 years working your ass off getting that doctorate. You didnt have a family then and you didnt expect to but things happen and you love them more than anything and you're so thankful that your husband was so willing to leave earth for you. He calls it the longest honeymoon any human has ever gone to.

It's been a long time on the ship. You spent the day at the lab, like most days. Although you're lucky that brass cares so much about the colonists and staff on board, you only have a 6 hour work day and you have almost free range of the ship. Work day's coming to a close and you've gotten some promising research done.

You think about today's list of events:

You have to pick up your daughter from daycare.

The lab is quiet for the moment. You're the only one in the room seeing that most of your colleagues have stayed home today since it's Rise Day. Celebrating 3 years since the HUS Sunrise left Parker Spaceport.

You stand from your desk and you rub your eyes underneath your glasses. This is gonna have to do. You shuffle a stack of papers and folders together and put them in your bag.

You walk through the doors of your laboratory and through the long winding halls of the ship. The board usually stays on the upper decks of the ship while most staff work at the bottom. You decide to take the elevator today, not wanting to sweat through your lab clothes. After about half an hour of traveling you finally reach the office the meeting is being held in.

You walk in.

You see 3 men sitting at a large table farthest from the door. You've gotten there on time so that's nothing to worry about. You walk up to the screen wall and plug a USB with your presentation on it into a port.

"Hello gentlemen, I'd like to present the current findings of my team's research."

There had been drones flown out ahead of the ship in order to glean more detail on the planet. Using the information sent out from the drones you were able to construct a fairly accurate model of life on the surface.

Just as you're about to respond to the Chairman you feel the ground lurch. The room rumbles and shakes. You hear distant explosions from other parts of the ship.

Everyone is in panic mode. Outside of the conference room you hear screaming.

You think to your family. You know where the life pods are and they can easily hold 20 people.

This is another of humanity's great leaps forward. You knew the cost, you knew the dangers. You were trained for it.

You eyed the directors and shouted about the life pods. You are a xenobiologist, and one with high regard. You're essential staff and therefore get preferential treatment. Regardless of the circumstances everyone in that room gets a life pod.

You book it out the conference room and once again through the steel halls. Your husband knows what to do in an emergency, although he's a chef he had to go through all the emergency training you did.

Your daughter on the other hand..

Daycare staff have a responsibility to keep those children safe. You know which safety center they'll be going to. Your husband does too.

You hope they follow the rules as well as you do.

The ship is big. Certain halls are wide enough to allow bikers their own path. You briefly consider hopping on one to get there faster, although that would take you off the route you're supposed to follow.

Through your haze of panic you remember your phone. It's a basic phone designed with cost effectiveness and the essentials in mind.

You push through the crowd with a ferocity only a mother could have. With every frenzied shove, kick or punch being returned likewise.

Your husband knows basic first aid. He was reasonable able to hold down a thick fabric over her wound. The entire time he ran over here he had her pressed up against his chest.

"Look, every pod has a medical kit." You speak with conviction to assure him. "If we can get to one fast enough we can fix this."

You give him a few seconds to process your words and let him follow you to one of the access points. The closer you get the more you realize that no one is even keeping order any more. The safety center is empty besides a few others that managed to get past the crowd.

All of staff seemed to have evacuated as soon as the ship got hit.

The majority of the pods have been jettisoned, although they would all have been more than enough to empty the ship.

It seems as though the first ones to the pods didn't wait for anyone else to go with them..

The nearest available pod has 4 other people in it. There are other empty ones a little farther away, although you hear all kinds of carnage from the crowd outside of the safety center. They won't wait much longer.

You jam your credentials into the small screen next to the door. With a small hiss the air lock releases and the doors slide open.

Inside you see 4 people.

A member of the board of directors. He wasn't at the meeting with you as he attends to matters involving ship maintenance, not science. A tall lanky individual with pale blue eyes and a wild beard. He's known for his charitability, spending time helping those in the lower colonists' sector quite often.

An older gentleman, you recognize him as the librarian. You don't know much about him as he prefers to keep quiet, but you know that he's also a poet.

A young lady. She looks worn out for someone her age. Tired, clearly from a lifetime of stress not from the recent incidents. You've never seen her before but you can tell she's from the lower sectors by her clothing. Worn for function, not design.

A middle aged man. He looks relatively healthy, although clearly balding. He has a thick black mustache and he's wearing an engineer's uniform.

They stare at you, suprised and worried.

The director stands almost immediately.

"Is she okay? What does she need? There's a medical kit here but I dont think any of us know how to use it."

Imagine one of those spinny things at carnivals that push you against the walls because of the g forces. It's like that but lined with 20 seats against the walls. In the center there's about enough supplies for a packed life pod to survive for a month. Your pod currently has about 2 and a half months worth of supplies because of how many people are in there.

They're designed for worse case scenarios and are sturdy as all fuck.

You lay her down while your husband closes the door behind you. The director digs through the supply crate in the center of the life pod and pulls out a large red box. He hands it to you and you're surprised by its heft. Inside you probably have enough supplies to reattach someone's arm.

You get to work on your daughter's shoulder. Her fragile body nearly limp on the floor.

It seems you have over estimated your abilities.

Even as a biologist you're incapable of performing critical surgeries on humans. That and the injuries your 3 year old daughter sustained were too much for her body to handle. While she was lucky to have survived for this long, she breathes her last breath as you exasperatedly continue to fix a something that can no longer be fixed.

Your husband, while being much more expressive with his emotions, can't do anything but sit on the closest chair and stare at the ground between his feet. Hands clutching his hair.

The rest of the people in the room are in shock. In a sudden moment you had barged in here with a wounded child and in another she lies bloody on the floor.

First lesson, Killing anything is a very cheap way of getting drama. At best you'll gain disinterest from the players and at worst, you get an angry mob of players that either leave the quest or decide to shitpost the quest to oblivion.
Also, read the PDF. It should give you lots of pointers in the right direction. AND don't be afraid of asking us if you feel trapped. This is a narrative/game where all of us have to entertain each other and therefore communication between both parties is key. Think of it as wrestling, but all of us are the wrestlers and the audience at the same time..

She's meant to be someone we need to protect, having only one arm is only adding to that. Eventually we might meet up with people and end up getting her a prosthetic, then when she's grown cybernetic, replacement. If we can keep her alive that long, then she can become a useful, and important person in the world.
These are things that will make the daughter something to anchor the character with, and to make us look forward to. Double points if she's our next character in a sequel.

You pull an iv drip out of the med kit. Senternil. A powerful pain killer. You hand the small plastic package to your husband to hold up and then you stick the needle end into your fragile daughter's arm. While it won't keep her alive it'll at least stop her from feeling what you're about to do.

You clean around the wound and start sowing skin to skin, hoping that each string will give her at least a second more of life. Just a better chance of surviving this hell she never asked for. 30 minutes go by and it looks like you're done. You're covered in blood and you're exhausted.

Nearby another explosion is heard, followed by the rumbling of the ships hull straining against itself and the gravity of the planet below. You pull the gauze and tape from the med kit and wrap your daughters arm tightly. You replace the packet of Senternil with a bag of synthetic blood and start putting your supplies away as quickly as you can.

The crowd outside let's panic decide what happens next. You hear them swarming into the safety center and after the escape pods.

The probes were designed to orbit the planet like satellites while equipped with cameras and tools to measure just about everything telescopes can't detect at a distance.

There were 10 sent out and they all successfully achieved orbit. The cameras saw plenty of evidence of life. Recording animal and plant analogs. It was fairly similar to earth, liquid water, large ocean, largely nitrogen and oxygen atmosphere. Most animal life was larger than earth's although not by much.

A couple of species were noted as being colossal in size, about 160 feet tall.

Most life on this planet has evolved 6 limbs instead of 4, although some animals have 8.

A couple of probes even captured images of what seem to be animals 2 feet wide and completely spherical near the oceans.

Evidence for intelligent life was never found, until the HUS Sunrise was attacked.

We know nothing of the aliens who sent the message.

The planet was hidden from us. Somehow with the advent of the FTL drive, new systems became visible to our telescopes. It's about 25 light years away, but we made it in 3 years.

The planet is orbiting a red dwarf star fairly closely. It's only a little colder than earth. The winters here are pretty brutal though.

The years on this planet are longer than earths, about 6 months longer. There's two moons circling the planet. They orbit basically opposite to each other.

There's a couple other planets in the solar system. None that interesting though.

The planet doesn't have a name yet. The idea was that the colonists would set foot and decide the name from there. All colonies would have the chance to name their own planet.

About 3 thousand people.

A lot of people rushed into a pod and left without bringing anyone with them. Most people won't get the chance to leave the ship. Most people will die.

They won't. They were programed to make planet fall if there was an emergency during orbit.

And yes. You will have some control.

The fact that we have escape pods means that we can expect a follow up mission to catch up with us. Otherwise we would have gotten only the landing pods or whatever other method of colonization the Sunrise had.

This also means that the pods will have some minor form of colonization capabilities like seeds, a 3D printer, a long range radio, a basic chemistry set, solar panels. maybe the pods can also be deconstructed and be converted into a camp.

Which means that we should let the auto pilot land by its own. The pods will try to stay together because it makes sense. Given that there are other escape pods ahead of us, the ones that are still on orbit will try to follow the first ones

The screen in the middle of the pod lights up with all kinds of information. The director clearly knows how to drive this thing. He types away at the screen and turns to the rest of the group.

"So.. where do you guys want to go? There's uh.. a couple spots the pod has seemed suitable."

You look at the screen and read your options.

Why do you want to land in the forest? there is no near source of water, the trees will make our survival harder and there might be predators that will hide in the trees.

You're still gonna need to boil the water regardless if its a lake or a river, specially because we're on a different planet. The only real advantage we might have with a river is that we can get rid of our ...fluids easier, but i'm not sure if that's a good idea right now. Poop and such is super useful as a fertilizer and we might need those as a stop gap before we manage to adapt our seeds (if any) to this new planet.
Also, its a clear field. We have vision advantage against any predator AND we have less work to do when we decide to farm, which will be done ASAP.

Also, check the landing of Voskhod 2 as for why you don't want to land in a forest. Hint: It involves wolves, bears and a space gun with "plenty of ammunition".

Dice rolls usually rolled to know how well you do an action when you are under duress, in a situation where you can't concentrate, or are in a situation you aren't proficient in.

The thing is that you are making us roll, but the roll has no real purpose because we can't choose what we're voting for. Under those situations its for the best that you choose or you give us a list of options to choose from instead of blindly rolling.
