In the last session we finished the dinner with Nike’ and she agreed to accompany us for several hours while we explore the city. We decided to start with the Hall of Huntsmen to see what elite monster hunters really look like. There we memorized several assignments that caught our eye for the future and spoke to an elven hunter who uses a dwarf made wheellock, which is a rare weapon on the surface.

After Urien has left to attend to his own matters, you decided that you’d like to know more about the woman with the strange gauntlet and her group. Actually, it doesn’t seem that she is in charge, she just caught your eye with her somewhat impractical armor and the heavily decorated gauntlet in her possession. The rest of her group seems to consist of 6 people, four of which are male huntsmen and two of them are female.

The gauntlet woman is in her early 20s and she is wearing mostly leather armor made out of a creature that doesn’t seem familiar to you. It looks like it is covered in shiny greenish scales, some of which show evidence of battle damage. The armor is almost completely open between her lower ribs all the way to her belt which doesn’t seem to be too practical, but the armor’s material suggests that she probably knows what she’s doing. It is customary for monster hunters who use monster body parts in their gear to actually participate in the extermination of the monster in question. She has no signs of old wounds, or even blemishes which is surprising for her occupation. The gauntlet appears a bit too thick and clumsy to just be decorative, almost as if it is supposed to act like a small shield. It has no evidence of damage or even small scratches. She is armed with a steel feathered mace.

The leader of the group seems to be an aging man in his forties with far receding hairline and a well-groomed moustache. He is wearing a custom laminar armor with an underlying layer of chainmail and he is currently armed only with an arming sword. It is likely that he owns some kind of polearm that he had to lock in storage upon entering the polis. He seems to be mildly annoyed by the shenanigans of the gauntlet- wearing woman who is currently in the process of expressively telling her comrades some kind of story.

The two other men appear to be brothers, judging by their identical hair color and facial features. Both are wearing light gambeson- like armors and their gear suggests that they are archers. Their build suggests that their chest and arms are very strong, which would make sense if they use war bows. They seem to be moderately tipsy.

The last man is a large and serious- looking fellow clad in custom steel plate armor. You think that he might have some kind of ability connected with strength and/ or endurance since the shield behind him is a bit too heavy to be used by an average soldier. It is the shape of a roman Scutum, but instead of plywood it consists completely out of a thick steel sheet. His other weapon is an arming sword, but he could have some kind of polearm stored outside.

The other woman in the group is in her late 20s and she gives off a “mage” vibe. She doesn’t seem to be physically powerful at all as she has a very slender but tall figure. She has a staff with a rough gem the size of her fist lodged into a special housing on top and she is wearing mainly cotton and linen dark blue outfit covered in golden symbols placed in circular patterns that you don’t recognize. However, you can tell that she is wearing some kind of armor below her outfit, most likely some chainmail and/or thin gambeson padding. She also has a thick leather book attached to her belt.

As you were about to approach them, you noticed that there is some kind of commotion starting at the Hall entrance and people are slowly turning their attention towards it…

The commotion? It is just starting. We can wait and try to understand what's going on from here, but the source of it is covered from you by the wall behind the reception area. It would be easier if we approach and see for ourselves.

So we check out the commotion and if it is not important we investigate the gauntlet girl. Writing
>>
>>3786757
The commotion could be something more important than investigating random hunters, so you decided to take a look at what was the matter. Nike’ also had no idea what that could be. It could be some emergency like a powerful monster attack or it could be some famous hunter returning from their journeys. It could also be an untimely update to the information board if an important enough task was just delivered. But then again, it could just be some rowdy person. It is a place for freelance superpowered people whose job description includes killing various horrors across the realm, some are not the most stable fellows.

As you approach and take a look behind the wall along with dozens of other hunters, you note a wounded man in tattered and charred clothing. His hair is covered in ash and he is shaking as he nervously recites what has happened. “…it fell from the sky covered in soot and ash and it crushed the chief’s house and several buildings nearby! Its roar threw people above the treetops killing many of them on the spot! You’ve got to help us! It is too close to the Polis!”

One of the receptionists nods and takes a metal hammer which he uses to hit a metal shield suspended on the wall three times like a gong. This causes all the hunters to become silent. He then grabs a horn that was reshaped into a crude megaphone, walks out into the main hall and shouts through it: “ALRIGHT PEOPLE! WE HAVE AN EMERGENCY ASSIGNMENT! WE NEED TO DEAL WITH SOMETHING BIG, FIERY AND DANGEROUS! ANY VOLUNTEERS?!” The hall is temporarily silent as everyone tries to come up with the decision. Looks like people are waiting for someone to volunteer first.

>”I volunteer! Let’s get it!”
>Wait for someone else
>Other?

>”I volunteer! Let’s get it!”

Well, there has to be someone who volunteers first, so that might as well be you. It is not like you are risking much. You raise your hand and say that you volunteer to take part in this endeavor. Nike’ shrugs and also raises her hand: “Sure, that might be fun. Let’s do this”. After that the gauntlet girl and her group decide to join and just moments later over half of the hunters stand up and volunteer. This might be something big, but even if not, it would probably still be worth investigating.

The hunters who volunteered left their seats and walked to their rooms or to the armories to gear up. The gauntlet girl passes by and tells you: “can’t wait to see you in action!” before leaving towards the armories. Considering that all your gear with the exception of your halberd is with you, there is no need to gear up so you end up chatting with Nike’ in the meantime.

“Honestly, I think that it could be space debris” she says, “the “roar” could have been the shockwave from the impact and it could kill people due to the overpressure. Hoverer, even then it could be something interesting. We still don’t know how that much debris was thrown into space in such weirdly stable orbits. The larger chunks actually pose an existential threat within next three to four thousand years as they slow down and would eventually crash into the Earth.

Then again, the description also kind of looks like a lower dragon. These creatures come in myriads of forms and they probably were a popular “pet” or “guard animal” in pre- Long Night times. Larger dragons produce almost animalistic fear and awe in mortal observers. Elspeth thinks that this was the reason why they were created in the first place as guard animals, while smaller types were made later as pets once the bigger dragons became popular. Dragons are one of the few monsters that can sustain their population through natural reproduction.

They are heavily territorial and dangerous to anyone in their protected area. However, some people seem to be similar enough to their previous owners or they manage to establish a link with them by sheer luck which causes the dragons to bond with them and precisely follow their commands. The smaller dragon species between the size of a cat up to the size of a large dog are known to bond with some powerful psi users. The larger ones seem to have tighter owner recognition. There are some incredibly rare “dragon riders” that managed to bond with a dragon large enough to lift their weights. I think there are less than 50 of those in all four countries and they are on par with some combat-oriented Cup Bearers in terms of their combat potential.”
>>
>>3786922
Interesting, so not all monsters were created as weapons. Honestly, it probably takes some very disturbed mind to think up some of them, but this one kind of makes sense. Dragons were initially created as a concept due to the amalgamations of several primal human fears. For example, even if there are no flying birds big enough to hunt humans, there is still a remnant fear leftover from the evolutionary background. And dragons combine that fear along with the fear of large predators, fires and certain fears of reptilians. In addition, an intimidating security system is actually more secure than a system that is effective against break- ins so it would make sense to create an intimidating guard animal that you have full control over.

“In any case…” says Nika, “I think I’ll accompany you in this adventure, but I’ll probably have to go right after that. Sorry that I don’t have too much time today”. You reply to her that she shouldn’t worry, you very much liked your time with her which causes her to smile a little.

The hunters start gathering on the plaza in front of the hall. Some of them specialize in siege equipment and they have large portable ballistas that require a horse to be pulled. These particular weapons seem to be designed to fire harpoon- like bolts that are chained to an anchor which can get attached to the ground. It is probably their way to fight flying enemies. The gang is essentially ready, there are around 80 hunters total, 15 of which are siege operators and about half of the remaining carry ranged weapons like war bows. The expedition is finally ready, let’s get this started!

The hunter expedition moves out of the city and goes roughly to the south and the trip doesn’t take much time. In fact, the Hall apparently supplies horse pulled wagons for these kinds of missions and the affected village is one of the closest to the Polis. It only takes around an hour and a half of the ride to get there and you start seeing the first problems in both of Nike’s guesses…

The village is currently on fire and there is a two-story tall round object placed in a relatively small crater splat in the middle of it. You can see some bodies, but it seems like everyone who has survived decided to vacate the area. The object’s surface is around 120 degrees and it seems to be leaking heat from the inside which keeps it at constant temperature but beyond that it seems inert. The siege engineer hunters are spreading out and deploying their five hunting ballistae while the rest of the hunters disembarked and started planning what to do with that thing. The wagons promptly left the possible combat area and they would be waiting further away just in case. Their drivers are not monster hunters so it is understandable that they would not want to be any closer to danger.

The hunters attempt to vote on who should investigate this object. The consensus seems to be placed on you since you are the first person to volunteer and honestly you don’t mind it that much. You are secretly way more durable than most of them so you should be able to tank whatever happens, right?

So, you cover yourself with your shield and start moving towards this “egg”, as hunters suspect. Nike’ said she has no idea what that could be, but to be fair, a lot of monsters are unique so it shouldn’t be concerning. The heat is mildly uncomfortable for you, but in just a few minutes you’ve made your way almost completely towards the object. The hunters behind you form in a scattered formation presumably in case of area of effect attacks and you are left to investigate this thing.

The object’s surface is similar to some kind of smooth stone and it is covered in thin cracks that glow dim orange from the internal heat leaking outside. That means the internal space of this thing is around 1300 degrees Celsius, which is a little bit below the melting point of steel. You wonder how you should approach this…

You decide to poke the object with your telekinesis. That would allow you to probe it deeper and thus more likely to get some kind of response. However, it would look strange for everyone who is observing you. So, you decided to synchronously poke it with something. Your eyes end up glancing over your halberd, but you dismiss the idea since you don’t want to lose the precious aluminum bronze that it is made out of. So, you decide to grab one of the wooden beams that probably used to be the part of some of the nearby shattered buildings. You pick it up acting as if it was heavy (which, to be fair, it is… for a human) and you slowly put it against the egg. This gives no response. You try to lightly ram it. No response. You probe the egg deeply with telekinesis and you get a weird sensation almost as if you can feel how difficult the various parts of the internal structure are to push which creates a distorted image. And oh boy, there is a response to that.

The object’s cracks begin glowing more before they momentarily lose their glow which is followed by a powerful shockwave. It throws you as if you were a piece of sawdust and you land helmet first into the ground in the outskirts of the village being flung at least 200 meters backwards. You stand up slightly wobbly as you become aware of your eardrums being shattered. Luckily, you are regenerating too fast for that to be a problem. All of your gear seems fine at least...

This shockwave was so powerful that it knocked over most of the hunters and several of the setup ballistae were damaged. As you were thinking about this, a large piece of the object’s shell lands inches away from you and enters half a meter into the ground like a 1000-degree kitchen knife into butter. Similar pieces are raining all across the area but luckily most of the larger ones are impacting in the now abandoned village area. So, if the egg broke that means… oh boy…

Something strange unfurls from the former inner egg space. A titanic creature with roughly humanoid shape towers above the village as it unfurls its 15-meter-tall stature. It glows bright red and its skin appears rubbery and covered with some viscous material like tar. It has a weird half disk shaped head with two small lights for the eyes and thin red line on the edge of the disk for its mouth and it looks like it is grinning maniacally. It has two long thin arms and a multitude of tentacles has sprung from the creature’s back. For legs it has a mass of its weird tentacles but it is mostly covered in noxious fumes that smell like sulfur. It is making a weird deafeningly loud bubbling sound that seems somewhat similar to laughter.

“Oh right, haven’t seen those things in a while…” says Nika. “They look tough, and they are, but they are vulnerable to TK and powerful impacts. I don’t think that most of what these people have could leave any meaningful wound on that thing…”

Writing. The creature is unfortunately too hot to be hit by basically anything except ranged attacks or Ag's artifact sword. I assume you don't want to lose gear so we would be using the sword for cutting, not the halberd. Also this would be the last quest post for today since it is 1 am here.
>>
>>3787412
Ok, works for me

>>3787412
The hunters seem scared of the sudden appearance of such beast, but it doesn’t seem like they are planning to run away. The remaining intact ballistae fire their harpoons fruitlessly as the chains melt when the projectiles hit the monster dealing next to no damage. The ranged hunters start peppering the beast with everything they’ve got while melee fighters are slowly making their way towards the base of the creature. Their progress is greatly slowed down by the torrent of noxious smoke produced by the egg’s hatching.

The monster’s tentacles coil up and spring towards the monster hunter positions. Most of these tentacles hit close but the hunters manage to dodge away the attacks. Sadly, six of them get killed on the spot as no shields of armor could resist such impact. One of the tentacles flies straight for Nike’, but it gets blocked by that gauntlet girl. Her artifact produces some kind of a forcefield barrier above her hand which absorbed the entirety of the impact without her even feeling any of it. Unfortunately, the glow of the gems in it suddenly became much dimmer and by her reaction you can tell that she probably won’t be able to block another one of those.

You rush in and attempt to cut off the stunned tentacle with your dwarven sword, but it doesn’t seem to cut at all. It is like very viscous liquid and it keeps filling up any cuts you make and you can’t muster enough force to cut it completely. It is somewhat reminiscent to your attempts at exploring your own biology by trying to cut into your own arm. You need some other solution…
>>
>>3787617
Nike’ sighs and says “oh well, gloves off. I’ll fling you closer to its head, blast it with telekinesis!” Before you can even agree you suddenly find yourself falling through the air directly above the creature’s head. Simultaneously, you notice several large boulders appearing in midair high above Nike’ and you guess that she would finish off the creature with a barrage of those. And in the meantime, you’ll try to wound it as much as possible.

You pull out every arrow you have and arm the ones that are explosive before propelling them into the creature’s head. The explosions are relatively small, but you give it your all and at these speeds chemical explosives are basically meaningless. Their only purpose is to fragment the projectile. This attack, while not lethal, is still highly efficient as it causes the creature to wail in pain and flail around madly instead of focusing on attacking your mortal allies. You’ve scored direct hits for its eyes and one of the projectiles completely penetrated through the monster’s head giving you a glimpse of the orange hot liquid material on the inside.

Before you fall too close to the creature you suddenly find yourself near to Nike’ who simultaneously teleports the boulders moments before they impact around her into basically the same positions but with their accumulated kinetic energy redirected directly towards the monster causing them to get flung at it. Such large projectiles rip massive chunks out of the creature until it completely loses cohesion and splatters into a giant puddle of molten material.

“Phew, that was pretty close, good job, Ag! Another minute and we would not have any hunters left” says Nike’ to you in English. You notice that her disguise is failing as she continues “I’m going to get out of here before the pin fails completely. These things drop some interesting spoils. Sorry for that and see you at your birthday!” After saying this she vanishes into thin air. Oh well. The hunters are currently very confused as to what has happened but it doesn’t seem that they noticed what has really occurred and they are too busy with tending for the wounded and fallen, but the first cheers for the glory of Nike’ and the Platania’s Hall of Huntsmen are starting to roll in. You’ve won, and now all that is left is dealing with aftermath.

And that is it for this week’s thread of SGQ. Hopefully next week I’ll be able to start on time and wrap up with the inventory and infrastructure. As usual, feel free to discuss, propose projects and ask questions. I will get to them as soon as I can. I hope you enjoyed and I’ll see you next time.

thank you for running, i did enjoy it and you can bet we are gonna see you next time.

is the teleportation part of the space warping package, i seem to remember Nike having taken that one as well. If so, i assume its a rather advanced technique
>>
>>3787629
It is actually Nike's signature utilization of power. She has managed to somehow get to the point where she can spam line of sight teleportation of anything and anyone to anywhere at any time as long as she knows where everything is. And yes, it is a part of spacetime package, however in this case it is combined with a good chunk of her talent and training. She is one of the most powerful SGs in one on one combat against anything including the majority of other deities in this corner of the continent. Most likely we won't be able to use teleportation on that scale and as often as her anytime soon.
>>
>>3787641
thank you for the clarification, in light of that i would suggest when we are gonna be praised for the whole thing or have to explain our selfs, we mention a "helpful divine intervention"
>>
>>3787622
thanks for running, let's see to the spoils

now i'm interested on those gems even more

Before the hiatus we were discussing creating a banner, now that we established Farsalos and are getting fame as a hunter we should create something to represent ourselves that can be later the mark of our faith
>>
>>3787679
>>3787679
Yeah, I remember that the following suggestions were made:

1) various types of shields
2) a book
3) trees
4) a raven

Last time I forgot or didn’t have an opportunity to share what I think of the suggestions so I’ll do that now if no one minds:

1) The shield fits well with our actions as we defend our people. However, it is a weird choice to have only a shield painted over a shield. It would make a nice background for the actual symbol though.

2) Book seems fitting with the whole idea of spreading and preserving knowledge, but do we want to limit what the symbol says about us to just that? It is used on Mozambique and Dominican Republic flags IRL and we could add it in with something else

3) The tree reasoning that was given by one of the players does make some sense, but I think that it would have more of a “nature” vibe and less about growth and shelter. I feel like it would fit more if we were nature conservationists or had powers similar to Ninmah. A Cedar tree can be found on the flag of Lebanon.

4) Ravens are very smart birds and to be fair owls are surprisingly silly in comparison(and already taken by Elspeth and by the house of Elim), but ravens have the darkness symbolism baggage. We don’t really do much in terms of shady or sneaky things to choose it in my opinion, but I won’t stop you if you want it.

I would like to make a few personal suggestions:

Maybe a cog or cog arrangements on our symbol or in addition to it. This would indicate our efforts in progress, mechanisms and engineering. Half of a gear is used IRL on the flag of Angola. Honestly, if we won’t take that, I’ll give it to Yaw.

There is also an option to use some kind of tool or weapon. Of course, the IRL example would be the famous hammer and sickle of the USSR, but many other nations use various examples of instruments in their flag designs: Angola has a machete, Portugal has armillary sphere, Ireland presidential standard has a harp, Mozambique has a garden hoe.
>>
>>3790077
i mean we could have a shield leaning on a book with two interlogged cogs on the cover, although that might be rather complicated
>>
>>3790077
oh, when we meet elspeth truthfully for the first time, we might just have to hit/slap her, since that was what uncle Dan asked us to do
(I know it might be a joke, but it wouldn't have to be hard and it would somewhat legitimise our claim of being his niece)
>>
>>3790077
a shield with a cog and a sword and a halberd crossed in front of it maybe?
>>
>>3790077
There is also a question of color and its significance. Due to the lack of modern pigments, we are somewhat limited in the choices of colors for our flags and heraldry. Luckily, due to the influence of their pantheons, the four nations have very similar opinions on what meanings each of the commonly used tinctures have. For the ease of understanding, I will use historical heraldry terms and I’m not going to actually translate them to Ceno Lingua. Here is a list of options that we have along with their meanings:

Metallic
* Argent: white and silver color. Signifies truth, sincerity, peace, innocence and purity.
* Or: Golden yellow color. Signifies wisdom, generosity, glory, constancy and faith.
* Copper: not used in any known imagery. Historically used in Canadian heraldry and has no real meaning now.

Colours
* Sable: jet black color. Signifies wisdom, serenity, hard work, grief, constancy and prudence.
* Vert: emerald green color. Signifies beauty, youth, abundance, joy, hope and loyalty in love.
* Azure: sapphire blue color. Signifies sincerity, piety, loyalty, chastity, truth, strength and faith.
* Gules: ruby red color. Signifies excellence, fortitude, fire, magnanimity, military strength, warriors and martyrs.
* Purpure: purple color. Signifies temperance, regal, justice, royal majesty, and sovereignty.

Stains(rarely used)
* Sanguine: blood red color. Signifies Fortitude, patience and victory.
* Tenne / Tawny: orange color. Signifies worthy ambition.

It is ok if we end up with several choices, there are options that would allow us to combine two or three separate colors.
>>
>>3790088
I think that slapping her should come after our introduction. Else it would be extra disrespectful to do as a “mortal” and not as fellow SG. I have that in mind and once the time comes I will give several options of how to approach this

i think i didn't make it clear in that regard, obviously we should introduce ourself honestly when that time comes, it was half a reminder and half for the joke, since i honestly think elspeth deserves that, for leaving Dan with the whole clean up

i am not sure how tough she might be, so making it a gesture rather than an actual hit would be smart, even aside from the fact that we do not want to actually "damage" her, for lack of a better word

also, i had another idea for heraldry in mind, 3 cogs, a big one with 2 smaller ones that are not connected to each other, one having a book in the middle, the other with a shield
it would symbolize both knowledge and protection working to advance civilization, even if the one in the middle would be empty

the shield in copper, make it our collor since it's not used
the cog could be Sable
and the weapons crossing it Gules

You know, I am a bit surprised no one tried to go for golden color. I know that we can change our armor when we get our hands on mass-produced steel, but currently used aluminum bronze has a color very close to golden while "copper" is basically represented by a shade of brown on things that we can’t electroplate (like banners). I do recognize the heraldic significance. If few people use it and it has no inherent meaning then we can give it a theme through our behavior and achievements.

i personally have honestly forgotten that our copper armor has a more golden tint and i bet its the same for the others as well, only copper armor on the mind

I see what people want to see in general and I think I will delay the final choice to when we wrap up all current projects but before we start any new ones.

Hey guys, bad news. I managed to get a fever and I feel terrible. I hoped that I would get better today but I barely made it to the doc and back. I can’t guarantee sufficient quality of the quest today since I can’t focus at all and thus I am calling off today’s thread. We will continue next week. Sorry.

I will appear later in this thread if someone starts a discussion or has any questions once I feel slightly less terrible.

Page 9 alarm, I don't think it is archived yet
>>
>>3814915
Yeah, it's not archived just yet. I'll do that after I'm done with fixing the inventory and infrastructure. My god, I had a nasty way to compose pastebin infodumps. Will post it with a changelog here in a bit.

Village facilities changelog:
1) Overall military status added below known nearby threats. Currently includes militia and scorpio crews
2) Removed repetition of infrastructure from quadrants. Now it is in a separate list.
3) Removed granary that used to be mentioned twice for some reason
3) Renamed sector quadrants since after latest housing expansion that city plan makes no sense
4) Inn and cookhouse moved closer to the main roads so that it makes more sense. Presumably Ag planned the place WAY better than I did.
5) Technologies moved to project tracker for readability reasons
6) Fixed Agatha's estate location. It is on the main road to the south in the direction of Mirangi. First building to the left upon entering the village.

Inventory update: added Dwarven Ally ring stamp item

Next thread tomorrow and most likely it would be delayed, again. Someone in uni had a great idea to put all classes after 7 PM so my schedule is messed up. I might end up sliding a bit towards 1-2 am instead of finishing at midnight flat, but can't promise anything at the moment.

And yeah, thread archived

Caught this late.
On heraldry:
copper wall with arched gate. gate is half or(open) half sable(closed), on or shield.
Literally artifice we've done, symbolically guarded generousity.
