A dying man burst into the onsen. Your reflexively went to your hip, but your fingers closed around nothing but hot water. You hadn't taken the precious steel into the hot springs with you, for obvious reasons. Your muscles coiled for a fight when you recognized the man.

Takashi, one of your lord's retainers. Young, poor, but the best rider you'd ever seen. He looked at you with wild eyes. His tunic was soaked in blood, his boots marred with grime. Each step was torture as he stumbled towards you.

"Takashi!" you stood, thoughts of modesty gone from your mind. You were sure you weren't the first woman he'd seen naked, though with that much blood lost you could be the last. "What's happened?"

"K-kasumi," his voice was little more than a horse rasp. He collapsed to his knees in the thick snow and fell into your arm. "Your alive," he muttered, a wave of relief flooding over him.

"Yes," you said. Your heart was pounding already. "I'm... Takashi, what's going on?"

"Lord Haikon." Those two words seemed to take every ounce of breath he could muster. You didn't need to hear more. Your lord and Haikon had been at odds for years. You'd always expected the underhanded bastard would try something, but...

"Nagatoro?" Your heart tied into knots when you asked. Your husband was the greatest fighter you'd ever seen. He'd have to be to win your interest.

Takashi shook his head. "Dead. All of them." He gulped, drinking air like water. "They fought. To make sure..." his gaze drifted south to the reason you were relaxing in a hot spring and not fighting side by side with your lord's samurai: your swollen belly and the precious twins you were carrying.

Before you could say more, the brutish shhha-KOOM of an arquebus barked over the snowy mountaintop. You heard the clatter of armor and steel. Haikon's men come to tie up loose ends. You had maybe five minutes before the battle was met.

Your swords were a few feet away. You'd wrapped them in cloth to protect the steel from hot, humid air. Your clothes were folded nearby, but your armor was in no shape to be collected in a hurry.

You hauled yourself out of the steaming water, something much easier said than done in your current condition. You'd traveled to the hot spring instead of standing beside your husband and comrades under arms for a reason after all. You only hoped your unborn twins hadn't degraded your fighting skills too much, for the time being you were the only protector they had.

Your heart pounded as you collected your things. There wasn't a hope of getting your armor on in time, the complicated layers of lacquered plates were fiddly at the best of times. You'd never tried fitting them over your belly and weren't going to try now.

You tossed on your kimono, which did little against the bitter mountain chill, and grabbed for your sword when the doors burst open.

Two men wearing Haikon's hated colors stormed in. Takashi dove for the closest one on instinct, curling his body around the matchlock arwuebus pointed at your stomach. With a loud FA-WHOOM the gun went off. Takashi slumped dead, but the ball he'd taken had bought you prec seconds.

"you," a wirey samurai snarled. He was thin, crazy eyed and wearing little in the way of armor. His eyes drifted downward for a moment as he drew his sword. "lord Haikon decrees your death." his steel glistened in the candle light. "by your blade or mine you will die this day."

You had a hand on your scabbard, the other having moved unconsciously to your belly at some point during the commotion. But you were fast. Maybe fast enough...

>there's three of them left. Counting your twins that makes the odds even. What do?

Can't say I am, but that sounds pretty cool.

>there's three of them left. Counting your twins that makes the odds even. What do?
There has to be corners to hide behind, take evasive action and attack from chokepoints and blindspots
>>
>>3767925
Support. Cut him quickly then move to the others before they can reload. A question, how many months pregnant are we?
>>
>>3767918
Any options or ideas of what we can do?

Like any doors nearby, some stones or branches that we can jump on to vault over the wall, are we in a enclosed room, etc.
>>
>>3767961
They just stormed into the onsen and are a little too close to hide from. The closest is threatening you with his sword now. You try to run he'll cut you down. He's just staying his blade out of respect for your status as a samurai and your condition. He wants to allow you an honorable seppuku. But if you don't open your belly he will.
>>3767963
You're a little ways in to your fifth month so you're in no danger of popping.
>>
>>3767986
Five months is uncomfortable, but not terrible. We should be able to fight just about as well.
>>
>>3767984
The hot spring is pretty open. You've got the pool itself to your right and some shelving and such behind you to your right. They're pretty, but the construction probably won't stop a musket ball. Then again the one guy with an arquebus fired when Takashi tacked him and is on the floor. He hasn't had a chance to reload yet . The door to the rest of the complex ahead of you, behind the men who've come to kill you.
>>
>>3768008
Well shout out something about their cowardice and treachery and killing pregnant women then kill him.
>>
Your hand tightened on the laqured wood of your scabbard. You subtly adjusted your stance settling your weight firmly on your feet until you stood like a castle of flesh and muscle. You trained with a blade since you were old to hold one. You'd kept training even after your lord removed you from active service. Nothing cured morning sickness like hacking a dummy to scrap. Your skills were as sharp as your blade.

But there were three of them and you were unarmored and carrying precious cargo. There was a time and place for honorable combat, but this was neither. "three men?" you asked, slowly slowly sliding your trailing heel back. "three men to kill a pregnant woman in her bath?"

You reached for the rayskin hilt of your sword but didn't quite draw it yet. "I had no idea lord haikon had such faith in his men."

His eyes went wide. His nostrils flared. He knew he was being baited but didn't seem to care. You'd insulted his prowess and honor in front of his men. His better judgment fell by the wayside as he lunged for you, blade clearing its sheath with a ring of wicked steel.

You grabbed for your own blade and...

>roll a d6. I'll take the first four and drop lowest.
>>
>>3767918
Others are right, arquebus wielder is weak spot. It would take too long to reload, and if he has a sword it will take too long to draw when we attack him.

You mean the NuSteins right?
>>
>>3768125
Yes. Specifically a scene from the second one.
>>
Maybe it was the steam washing off the hot spring. Maybe it was your heightened maternal instincts. Or maybe it was just the adrenaline rush of having a wild-eyed killer lunge at you with murderous intent. Whatever the reason you felt time slow to a crawl.

Your sword came cleanly from your scabbard. The blade glistening in candlelight as it swung cleanly around, parrying his blow and biting into his neck in one smooth motion. Hot blood sprayed from his severed carotid as his body sailed past you. You didn't even blink as his corpse fell to ground and painted the snow red.

The other soldier looked at your blood spattered Visage for a moment and hesitated. A moment later you saw him mentally reclassify you from a pregnant woman enjoying a bath to a skilled warrior who'd slewn his boss with a single blow.

His hands wrapped tight around his sword as he settled into a defensive stance. His gaze drifted to the arquebusier who was staggering to his feet and fishing for a paper cartridge. An instant later he was fixed on you, feet shuffling to a defensive stance.

>in the interest of quickness I rolled for us. 15 if you're wondering.

The swordsman was on the defensive, that much was obviously to a skilled warrior like yourself. His mind was still struggling to unify the twin concepts of a pregnant woman with her swollen belly visibly filling her hastily ties Yutaka and a samurai who'd just put his boss in the snow with on the swing of her sword. It was like his higher brain functions had shut down and all he could think to do was to hold the shiny thing up like a ward.

The gunner was focused on reloading. The drill must've been so hammered into him his body carried it out by rote while his mind was a million miles away. Still, you knew the damage a musket ball could do. You couldn't allow him to fire again. You were the only one left who could avenge you husband. The only one who could bring justice to your lord's killers. You were the only protector your precious twins had.

You were a samurai. You kept death in mind always. But were you to die today you would leave so much undone.

You fiented to one side, setting the swordsman's defense off balance. Then you charged forward, parrying his halfhearted blow by instinct and continuing the swing up under the gunner's arm. You caught him in the armpit, blood spurted at your feet as you carried the blade up and around.

He dropped his arquebus. The firearm bounced off a rock and tumbled into the hot spring. He screamed and clutched at his limp arm, but you silenced him with a strike accros the throat.

The snow turned red as he collapsed to the ground. You swung to the last thug with fury in your eyes. He struck, the blade skipped off yours and sliced a shallow gash accros your brow. You'd had far worse, but blood and sweat welled from the would and blinded you in one eye.

But even half blind and thick with child you were a better swordsman than he. You struck, slicing his neck to the bone. Your Yutaka was splatterd with blood now, you face nearly as red as your blade.

His eyes rolled back. His sword fell from his hand as he collapsed to his knees. As his body fell to the snow your felt one of your twins kick.

(con't)
>>
>>3768262
You were alone, dressed in naught but a ruined Yutaka soaked in blood. Your lord was dead, your husband was dead, everyone you knew at the castle was either dead or subjugated under lord Haikon by now. And you were uncomfortably pregnant with twins that had grown too large for you to hide with any efficacy.

You knew this would not be the only attempt on you life. Haikon was as paranoid as he was cruel. Letting even one of his foe's retainers live invited the chance of retribution. Even your gravid state hadn't stayed his murderous appetite. Though to be fair you were dead set on vengeance, twins or not so maybe his paranoia was wise.

In any case, you knew you needed to get moving. The people at the onsen were good folk. Your lord had been kind to them and they'd been kind in return. But they lacked the ability to stop a determined attack, and your honor wouldn't allow you to ask anyway. You were a samurai, a protector of the people. You didn't hide behind them for protection, even if you were five months with child.

No, you had to leave... But to where? Haikon's territory was vast and this hot spring was nearer his castle than yours.

You could visit lord Jada, your sister was a retainer at his castle and from what you've heard he was a kind and honest, if rather poor man. But his castle was a good six days ride away. You were certain you could find a horse, but equally certain that Haikon would have men looking for a heavily pregnant woman traveling on her own.

There was a shrine not far away. Maybe a day's hike through the snow if you put your mind to it. You could go cross county and try to evade detection.

And... You were hesitant to mention it, but there was a gaijin mission in the small coastal town day's ride from here. You've heard little about them, beyond knowing of their existence. But you doubted they'd turn you in to Haikon, he was more aggressive at frustrating their acts than your lord.

But whatever your next move you'd better make it quick. A firm kick from the more rambunctious of your twins alerted you to how ravishingly hungry you were.

It almost totally mitigates the pursuers ability to catch us unless they’ve already got a decent number of loyal ships that somehow already know to look for us which seems... quite unlikely, though I could just be lacking context.

>I think the best bet, obviously after getting better dressed, would be to find horses and make your way to lord Jada. But see if you can find traveling companions(in this village or the next), so that you're not just a lone pregnant woman. You can just say you're worried about bandits on the road to there, if someone asks why your looking for accompaniment. Do some light looting for anything valuable on the bodies to try to use as payment to your companions, if necessary.

>>3768433
I don't think grabbing the gun would be too helpful(unless we could sell it), aside from it possibly getting ruined by the hot springs it fell into, knowing how to use the gun was a pretty specialized skill back then, and we don't know if she would even know how to reload it.

>>3768405
I agree with this, I don't think a samurai would venture far from a mission of vengeance. Enough to resupply and gather Intel as to where to strike maybe, other than that...Haikon, you a dead man

>>
For once op wasn't a faggot and returned
>>3768563
More updates is always good. Wherever we go though do not use the roads. A pregnant woman with blood stained clothes is too easily spotted. Travel through the woods and fields no matter how grueling it can be.
>>
>>3768582
You're up in the mountains. Going off the roads means lots of slogging through snow and limits how fast and far you could go.
>>
>>3768358

>>3768582
Odds are good we have other clothes here outside of bloodstained yukata(we certainly didn't travel here wearing only that). Just use the hot springs to clean the blood of your body and get dressed. And if we find companions we could more easily travel by road without raising suspicion.
>>
>>3768595
Then do what this anon said >>3768599
>>
You wipe you blade clean on a scrap of cloth from one of the slain men and try to ignore how fiercely hungry you were. You've been eating for three for months but you've never been able to completely silence your appetite. Your twins were going to grow up strong and hearty, but until then you were paying their room and board and they were anything but frugal with either.

You shrugged off your Yutaka, it was probably ruined anyway, it wasn't the kind of garmet you intended to fight for your life in, and waded back into the onsen. It took you a few minutes to find the arquebus. The match had gone out and there was a bit of a crack in the wood from when it had fallen. Other than that... It didn't seem to worse for wear, but you'd confess to being far less familiar with firearms than with your sword and now. You scavenged powder and shot from the dead gunner as well though it looked like blood had gotten in. Someone more familiar with firearms could tell you if you had anything worth keeping.

You took a moment to wash yourself off before you climbed out. The gash on your brow was still oozing blood, but you were able to get clean enough. You dried and dressed, binding your sarashi as tightly as you dared over your increasingly tender breasts. The twins you carried was a precious gift, but they were also a hinderence that made your quest for vengeance harder with each passing day.

After dressing you collected what little you could. The dead men had obviously been moving fast and light. Anything they didn't have to have had been ditched in the interest of speed. You found a few handfuls of coins. Enough for maybe a hot meal and a bed or two, but little else.

Their swords were markedly inferior to yours and marked with crest of Haikon, you didn't have the connections to fence them. Their armor was decent enough, if offering less coverage than you were used to. But you were large for a woman. Five month ago it would've been questionable if you could fit. Now your bump was too full to even entertain the idea.

You did find a few morsels among their possessions. Rice and fish that did nothing to sate your gnawing hunger. The keeper of the hot spring offered you some more rice. It at least got your twins to stop brawling inside your belly, but it wasn't enough to really satisfy you.

There were five horses (yours, Takashi's and the three assassins') waiting by the entrance to the hot spring, any one of which could easily carry you. You pulled your clothes tight against the bitter chill. The sun had set long ago and the coldest part of the night was coming soon. You caught yourself cradling your twins as you contemplated your next move.

Anons brought up a bunch of good ideas I wanted to make sure had their fair showing.
>>
>>3768613
It's probably too dangerous to sleep in town and would take too much time to try to sell the extra horses. so I would suggest using the money to do have to get food and water for the trip to the next town. Use your own horse in case the enemy has some way to identify theirs. Like the symbol on the swords. Once again I'd like to suggest finding traveling companions in this or the next town. Then make your way to lord Jada. There you can resupply and get Intel on the enemy
>>
>>3768625
Plus we don't know if the gaijin would be friendly to us.
The enemy of my enemy is not always my friend.

You saddled up your horse and lashed what little you'd managed to savage together so nothing to would fall off. You made sure the arquebus was hidden under as many layers as possible though you doubted it would help. If anyone found you slogging through the snow alone it wouldn't take them long to put two and two together.

You stopped in town just long enough to get a meal. Word travels fast and the general thrust of what happened was known to all. The people you ran into seemed supportive at least, your master was well liked among the small folk. But it was obvious that people were scared. None of them would die for you if that's what it came to.

When you got to town the innkeeper gave you a bowl of hearty stew for free. She was a little younger than you but nearly full to bursting with child. You figured she must have ached with sympathy. You thanked her proudly and horded your few precious coin.

With your twins quieted and your belly as full as it was going to get you saddled up and rode off. You made sure you were out of sight from the village before you turned off the road. You found a nice rocky spot where the snow wouldn't show your tracks and struck out for the village with the gsijin mission.

What was supposed to be a day's ride turned into a two day hike. The ground was tough and you spent more time leading your horse through knee high snow than riding it.

This wasn't your first time hiking through the wilderness. You used to quite enjoy it, especially with your husband by your side. You were fairy certain that your twins had been conceived deep in the woods.

That said, you hadn't hiked through snow this thick in years and you'd never traveled this far with a set of twins reminding you how long it had been since you'd last eaten with fiesty kicks every step.

You'd tried calming them. Cooing sweet nothings while cradling your precious bump in both hands. Nothing worked l. Your twins would not be distracted from their single minded passion for another meal.

You'd never felt so hungry in your life. Slogging through the countyside burned up all the energy you'd scavenged from the innkeeper's stew and then some. Still you pressed on. You had miles to go, and you could not rest until your lord and husband were avenged.

It was past nightfall when you finally rode into town. Your stomach hadn't stopped grumbling for hours and even your twins were starting to run out of energy. You could feel them sleeping inside you, but every so often a particularly strong grumble from your stomach would start them stirring again.

It didn't take long to find the gaijin mission. It was a simple building on the outskirts of town with little decoration beyond a white-washed cross on the roof. An old man in a simple robe was sweeping the porch when you rode up.

"hello, friend," he said in hobbled but passive Japanese. His eyes darted from you to your belly then your sword. He looked confused, and if not scared definitely uneased. "what brings you by?"

Heh, you jest but that is the fuel that sustains long running quests. But more seriously, it is as you say, a vengeance quest with more complications should devote a good amount of time describing it.

The latter sounds easier to find. I'll try.

You carefully dismounted from your horse, which was far easier said than done. You were exhausted, hungrier than you'd ever been in your life, and your belly made everything ten times harder. Not just its presence making it impossible to get too close to your horse from certain angles, but the weight of your increasingly rambunctious twins. Somehow they could sense that dinner was near, they'd woken from their nap and were stirring inside you. You ended up more falling than gracefully sliding off your horse.

"Can you help me?" you asked, making sure your pronunciation was clear even as your stomach growled and your muscles shivered. You were faint with hunger, your legs ached from your long hike. Your muscles were tied up into knots and slush had soaked your boots to the bone. "My babies--" you put both hands on your bump and cradled it for a minute to get the idea across. "and I are hungry and in danger."

The old man thought for a second, but you could see relief on his face right away. Maybe he was worried that you'd come to shut down his operation? Though why he'd expect that from a so obviously pregnant woman was beyond you. His response came slowly, but you could see in his face that he'd made a decision at once. He must've taken the time to form his response. "Yes. yes of course." He motioned for you to follow him. With a few words of the gaijins' grating tongue he ordered a young man to... take your horse, apparently and tend to it. You knew you should be concerned, but you were so hungry, so tired... you worried about your twins now. That was enough.

"Are you hurt?" the old asked, sitting you on a bench near a long wooden table. You scowled, more used to sitting on your knees. This felt... off... wrong. But the mission itself felt comfortable and warm. Candles lit up simple paintings that you assumed had some spiritual significance, and there was the obligatory cross up on one wall. The old man looked nervously at the gash over your brow. You hadn't gotten a look yourself, but you figured it had started to scar already.

I'm trying to keep the gratuitous belly references confined to when your pregnancy is causing you trouble for just that reason. Plus, it gives you a nice ticking clock.

Ask for a mirror to check ourselves. Wait patiently for the food and after we finish eating ask for permission to sleep and bath here for a few days while we visit the town and assess our options.

You mumbled something noncommittal to get out of answering the question, then returned one of your own. "Could I have a mirror?" you asked, gesturing generally to your face in the hope that his clearly limited knowledge of Japanese hadn't hobbled his vocabulary too badly. "A mirror?" You cocked your eyebrows, hoping your expression carried a degree of thankful charity that your words might not get accros.

"A mirror," the old man smiled. "Yes, I'll..." the door swung open and another man walked into the candlelit dining hall. He was gaijin, almost aggressively so. His hair was the color of straw and his square features looked carve from wood by someone who's ambition vastly outstripped his skill. His nose was craggy and lopsided, and he bore the unmistakable look of one who'd faced his share of blades. "Wulf!"

The blond man glanced over, noticing you for the first time. His gaze went straight to the two swords carried at your hip, passing your swollen belly with a pause only long enough to register its presence. Your hand shifted to the hilt of your wakizashi. You coiled your exhausted muscles for a fight. But he made no sudden move. He just smiled at the old man. His blocks features shifted like boulders falling off a cliff. No elegance, no grace. You could see he was missing a tooth, but there seemed to be nothing but warmth and kindness in his face. "Father," he said in acknowledgement.

"Wulf is.." the old man shook his head. "I have to attend to the kitchen," he said. "And get you your mirror. Wulf will see to anything else you need."

"I see," you said softly. You didn't let go of your sword as the big blond man--Wulf--stepped closer. He stopped a few paces from you and bowed. "Hello," he said in stilted Japanese. He held his hands out, showing you his open palms. He wasn't here to hurt you. Clearly. If anyone at this mission wanted you dead it would be trivial to poison your food. Slowly you realized what you'd just witnessed. Wulf was here to protect them from you. It was a wise precaution, you decided. A mission like this was a home for the weak and needy, seeing a heavily-armed woman--pregnant or not--stride in would naturally raise some eyebrows.

"Hello," you said in response. "I'm Kasumi." You shifted your hand until it was near--but not quite on--the hilt of your sword.

"Wulf," he said, settling onto a bench a respectful distance away.

Before either of you could say more, the old man came back with a plaintive expression. "I'm sorry, the kitchen..." he bit his lip. "We were not expecting guests at this hour. But-But I assure you, you will be fed under this roof." He handed you a small mirror as a token.

"Thank you," you said. The delay didn't bother you. It was late, and the prospect of food on the horizon had at least got your twins to settle down. You took a moment to examine yourself. The cut over your eye was still oozing blood. Your attempts to dress it in the field had been haphazard at best.

"I could give that a look," Wulf gestured with his hand--more of a thuggish paw, really--towards your brow. "If you'd let me."

I don't trust him, he's a stranger, a foreigner, and he's here to protect these people from me, why would he offer genuine help? Also he smiles too much for someone that's seen battle. And look at that paw... So thuggish

>Pull away from his offering hand and say you can care for it yourself

... So very very thuggish
>>
>>3769246
You left your armor at the castle when you went to the hot springs. No point in bringing so precious close to a humid environment that'll destroy the steel. That said, you might be able to recover it (or if you can somehow scrounge up the coin have someone make you a new set that'll accommodate your bump.)
>>
>>3769252
Forgot my name. Anyway! Gonna take a quick break to eat and stuff. talk amongst yourselves...
>>
Your first instinct was to refuse. You don't know much about this man, but what little you do points to him being little more than a thug. On top of that he's a stranger. A foreigner, and from the scars on his face and hands clearly no stranger to battle. But...

But then another voice mutters in your ear. These people were going to feed and house you, at least for the night. If they wanted you dead, they could just as easily poison your food or stab you in the night. Why attack you now? Why come close enough to risk your blade when they could off you without risk? Wulf was unarmed, or looked it. If he tried something you could open his stomach in an instant. "Very well," you said at last.

"You're scared of me," Wulf said. The big man pulled a bench over and straddled it in front of you. His motions were calm, deliberate. You could see it in his eyes, he was treating you like a dangerous but not overtly hostile creature. Like trying to tame a particularly stubborn stallion. "I'll take it as a compliment, I've seen what you people can do with those blades."

You smiled in spite of yourself. Your twins had settled down at the sound of his voice. Maybe they just liked the bassy rumble. Or maybe... maybe they were a better judge of character than you thought.

He reached over, brushing your long black hair over your ear and frowning at the gash on your brow. "Did you dress this yourself?"

"Yes," you said, one hand closing around your sword. He was so close... one slash and he'd be dead on the floor. But unless he threatened you you'd stay your blade.

"You did good work," Wulf pursed his lips and nodded. "It'll leave a scar though."

"That's no concern of mine," you said. Beauty was hardly your highest priority.

"Of course not," said Wulf. "You should change the dressing. Rinse it with some alcohol. I'd do it myself, but..." he shrugged. "It'd sting and then you'd stick me with that."

You chuckled at his nonchalant acceptance of your lethality. "You're not wrong."

"Look," Wulf settled back against the table opposite you. "The father means well, but he's got a whole flock to look after."

"He's scared of me, you mean," you said.

"I'm scared of you," Wulf admitted without a touch of shame. "I'm scared of whoever sent a woman like you running.

Before either of you could say anything more, the old man came back bearing a tray of bread, rice, and stew. "I'm sorry for the delay," he said as he set it on the table near you, carefully staying out of the arc of your draw. "I... please..." he stood to leave then stopped. "Would you mind if I said a blessing?"

You thought for a moment. You've heard these gaijin had strange ways. Harmless for the most part, but strange. But you decided against raising a fuss. They were feeding you and (you hoped) putting you up for the night. "As I am imposing on you and your temple, it would be rude of me to say no," you said at last.

The old man smiled and tapped his fingers against his forehead and shoulders, as did Wulf. After a second's hesitation you did likewise. It seemed like the thing to do. "Father," said the old man. "We thank you for this food, and for the guest you brought to our table. Bless this food to her body and give her peace in her travels, amen."

"Amen," grunted Wulf.

The old man smiled kindly at you, apparently expecting you to tingle from the words he offered. You... appreciated that they were meant well, but all the kind words in the world couldn't compare to the aroma coming off the stew he'd prepared for you. You muttered your own words of thanks, took the smooth wooden spoon in your hand and brought a mouthful of the hearty stew to your lips. But just before you tasted it you paused.

"Not poisoned." Wulf read your mind. Not that you figured your thoughts were terribly hard to predict. "I'll take the first bite if that'll set your mind at ease."

>Let Wulf sample your dinner, or dive in?

Eat. He's teasing us.

Ask about how long the monk and him have been living here, and what brought him to this land, particularly since Wulf doesn't seem to be a monk-in-training himself. Then ask if there has been any trouble with the local lord or peasants, and who they are affiliated with.

"I will not stay long. If it is not too much, I ask for clothing and some supplies for travel. For your kindness, I'll let you know now. There will be war. There will be troubled times ahead. For your safety, you never saw me."
>>
For a second you thought he was being serious. Then you weren't sure what to think, then you noticed the muffled smirk on his craggy face and you realized he was teasing you. Maybe not the wisest thing to do to a woman who could spill his guts in a heartbeat, but you got the impression Wulf wasn't burdened with an overabundance of wisdom. You couldn't help but smile at his dumb joke as you took your first bite.

It tasted... not wrong, but off somehow. Just subtly. You could tell that the Gaijin had tried to mimic the cooking of the home islands, but they just... hadn't. Not quite. Everything tasted just a little bit off. It wasn't enough to wholly turn your stomach, but it wasn't the kind of meal you were expecting. Before you could let your train of thought wander too far a swift kick in the gut from the more rambunctious of your twins reminded you that you had three mouths to feed, not just your own.

"Okay, okay," you cooed, cuddling your belly through the sturdy fabric of your outermost kimono. You noticed Wulf's eyes drift south to your maternal equator. He looked like he wanted to say something, but stopped himself. You shrugged it off and wolfed down a few more bites to keep your stomach from grumbling any longer. "So," you asked, wiping the corners of your mouth with a napkin, "What's your story?"

"Me?" asked Wulf. "Or..." he motioned to the old man, who'd wandered off to the far corner of the room to do... something. You assumed it was some gaijin ritual and didn't give it another thought.

"Both," you said. "Either,:

Wulf shrugged. "Father's a Jesuit. A..." he stopped, visibly searching for the word. Realizing he couldn't find it he shook his head in resignation. "He spreads the word."

You grunted and took another heaping bite of stew. "And you?"

"Just a layman," said Wulf. "I help where I can... a strong back..." he shrugged. "Not everyone who comes through these doors has a blade like that."

"I... see," you said. You didn't realize the gaijin temples had hired thugs. "What brought you to Japan?"

Wulf's face darkened. "It's as far from Germany as a man can get," he said. You got the impression you'd have to drag anything more out of him. That suited you just fine, you had other questions to ask.

"There been trouble?" you asked. The food tasted strange, but it was filling you faster than you thought possible. That, or you were just scarfing down the stuff without a lick of dignity. You suspected the truth was somewhere in between.

"A bit," admitted Wulf. "Mostly drunks... zealots... that kind of thing." He furrowed his brow and looked at you, then to your swollen belly again. "I think you could use a bed."

You were about to protest when you suddenly realized he was right. You'd never been this tired, just keeping your eyes open was a trial. The belly full of rich stew had done little to heighten your alertness. "I... I'll have to take you up on that."

Wulf offered you a meaty paw, "Stay as long as you need."
