It is the month of March. You are finally fifteen years of age. Once a year, all around the country, the teenagers as old as you are gathered inside a massive library tower to hold an awarding ceremony for grimoires – a book to further increase the ability to use the magical powers inside of them. In a world where magic is everything, this ceremony is the only chance for people to improve their lives. While many people return to continue their old, but amended, lives, those granted a powerful grimoire and holding vast amounts of mana inside them go on to become Magic Knights – the protectors of the realm.

The people of Clover Kingdom judge each other’s’ grimoires by size, thickness, decorations and, of course, the pages containing the powerful magical spells inside. Most importantly, however, they judge the grimoires by the clover on its cover. The three-clover leaf represents “Good Faith”, “Hope” and “Love”, and its design is the most common of all. However, the Magic Emperor, and some incredibly rare individuals who are sure to become the next Magic Emperors, are said to posses a grimoire with a four-leaf-clover; it symbolizes luck.

It is an impossible dream for every child.

Your grimoire is still awaiting you in the Grimoire Tower.

You are…

>Kai Gowan:
A boy with a small quantity of magic. You lived your entire life in the Forsaken Region of the Clover Kingdom, a place no noble would even think of stepping inside of. You are the only son of your family and a brother to five sisters, and as such the majority of hard work is put on your and your father’s shoulders. Your family lives in relative poverty, just like everyone else in your village. After receiving your grimoire, you will be of bigger help to your family and community. But maybe, just maybe, if you can find another, better way to support your family and earn enough yuls – such as being a Magic Knight – you might be able to bring them to the Common Region.
[Mana 50/50]
[Basic Spell: Nutrients Magic] Your magic flows into berries and fruits and speeds up their ripening.

>Cynthia Gualdo:
A girl with an average quantity of magic. Your mother has died when you were young. You and your single father live inside the Common Region of the Clover Kingdom. Your father owns a small but profitable business that your mother had started and he hopes that, once you receive your grimoire, you will begin to slowly replace him as the head of the business. You hide it as a secret from your father, but you dream of traveling outside of the region and maybe even the Clover Kingdom to see and experience the world that is not cloth and textile.
[Mana 100/100]
[Basic Spell: Linen Magic] Your magic flows into linen cloth and you are able to mend and manipulate it like a snake.
>>
>Marcel Gromier:
A boy with a large amount of magic. You are part of the Clover Kingdom’s nobility, the only son of the House Gromier. Your thunder magic had awakened at a very young age and you have every intention of carrying on your good family name. Until very recently, you have been enjoying your life as a noble in the charitable and expensive Noble Region of the Clover Kingdom. This all changed when your older sister had betrayed your kingdom by switching to the side of the enemy – Diamond Kingdom. After such treachery, your family name has been severely tarnished and the other nobles began to exclude you from their lives and treat your parents and you as traitors as well. You hope that by becoming a Knight you will be able to bring your sister to justice and reclaim your status.
[Mana 500/500]
[Basic Spell: Thunder Magic] You create a concentrated thunder that is invisible to the eye to anybody but you. You either explode it immediately or set it up as a trap up to four hours, for up to four traps. On contact, the thunder bursts and does a blunt damage to the enemy for 1 HP. The spell’s cost is 1d10+20 mana. In order to predict and avoid this spell the person defending must roll a DR of 40 or more on D100.

>[System]
The basic starting HP for every character is 5 HP. There is a random (uncontrollable) and set cost to a spell (per example 1d10+20 mana). Outside of battles, the random cost of the spell does not apply. The lowest of the rolls given by the players is taken into account for a decision. In order to avoid the enemy spell, one needs to roll a set DR (differs for every spell and the highest roll is taken of the ones provided), if not, the player receives a specific damage (varied for every spell). It is possible to cast a spell even if you don’t have the required amount of mana, but once in the negative the character is unconscious.

>I leave myself open to possible tweaking of this (pretty basic) system in the future.

>I plan to update daily unless something happens which I will warn about in advance. That should be all.

>It appears the majority have decided on the girl. I will provide you with the default appearance of the character and if you wish change anything about her please say so.

You have a long, flowing, red hair and small brown-orange eyes, as well as short eyelashes. Your skin is pale and, beneath your plain but sturdy working clothes, it is covered in calluses and bruises. Your figure is lean and thin. Your height and weight are just slightly below the average. You always had your magic to rely on so you never got to build up too much of a muscle mass.

>Granted. You are above average looking, some of the nobles may even show occasional attraction to you.

You enter the crowded hall of the Grimoire Tower with utmost excitement. You are so excited, in fact, you couldn’t fall asleep last night at all. Your heavy tiredness does not stop you from beholding every corner and cranny of the library tower. This was your first, and probably last, time in a Grimoire Tower. Tall lean spiral walls shelf at least a thousand grimoires. Those grimoires patiently await the one they would deem worthy; some of them have been in this library for at least a couple of decades. Even the first Magic Emperor got his Grimoire in a tower such as this.

You look to your right, where the children of the most influential merchants – the White Yul – have formed their own group. Their shops are visited and browsed by the nobles, if not sold directly to them. Just having a noble buy a single of your wares, or complain about it, can save a shop from bankruptcy or ruin it completely. Just like all the times before, when your glares cross, they give you an arrogant scoff. Best not to make enemies out of them.

To your left you notice a few fifteen-year olds in over-worn rags. A lot of them. Those are the children of the wagon merchants, yul workers (hired help who don’t own their own business), street urchins, beggars and even thieves. Lucius is there too, a helper your father had hired about three years ago. Perhaps, once he receives his grimoire, he will quit working in your shop for good. That will mean you will have to work double the shifts…

The middle of the road merchants like your father are not a rule, they are an exception. It is an extremely hard position to gain and keep, it requires both hard work and luck. You are both detested by the White Yul and envied by the merchants of the lower class, but, you have never seen your father show the struggle.
>>
Away from the commotion, stand the adults and even children accompanying them. Your father could not make it, of course, without Lucius and you, he will have to work hard today to finish his products by deadline. Near the very doors of the Grimoire Tower you notice a lean figure of a woman wearing the prestigious robe of a Magic Knight, although you can’t recognize its symbol from all the way there. What is she doing here? Is she just curious?

“Welcome, young men and women,” a grumpy voice of a an elder on a raised pedestal booms, “You each will begin walking down a new path starting today. I wish you faith, hope and love. I am the master of this Grimoire Tower. We haven’t had a Wizard King from this area forever…”

Just get to the point.

“I sincerely wish that someone among you will become the next Wizard King. I am serious here!”

“That’s impossible,” your own thoughts echo from the people standing in the background.

“Hmph. No, I believe it is! Now, it’s time for the awarding of the grimoires!”

With a tremble, the tightly sealed grimoires begin to leave their shelves in all colours of the rainbow. The mana begins to spread and circle inside the tower like a flock of birds. Eventually, surrounded by a bright silver glow, one dashes into your arms. Your grimoire. Your heartbeat fastens. Your grimoire. You waste no time to open it.
>>
>What is the first spell in your grimoire?

>[Offensive Form] [Linen Magic: Textile Binds]
With an open grimoire, you generate a magically enchanted spread of cloth that immediately surrounds the enemy of your choice. The binds are impossible to remove unless the target is able to destroy them (the enemy must use a spell as powerful as the DR of the spell). The cloth continues to tighten around and cause pain and damage to the target until he or she passes out.
>This spell costs 1d10+20 mana. The DR of this spell is 30. The spell deals 1HP damage every turn.

>[Defensive Form] [Linen Magic: Bulwark]
With an open grimoire, you manifest and then weave several layers of cloth in your size in form of a shield. You can use this spell to protect yourself or an ally. The shield remains under your control and can shift its position. Unless a special magic is used that allows your enemy to bypass the shield, he or she must first destroy the shield in order to land a successful hit on your further. When destroyed, the shield will turn into a burst of textile that will, unless avoided (DR passed), cover and daze the attacker.
>The spell costs 1d20+20 mana. The DR of this spell is 50. This spell protects the caster or an ally from an attack.

>[Healing Form] [Linen Magic: Homely Blanket]
With an open grimoire, you create a long layer of linen clothing which surrounds the target like a mummy and rejuvenates their wounds via the enchanted cloth. If the target of this spell is poisoned or similar, instead of healing this magic will drain all the poisons or similar into itself.
>This spell costs 1d10+10 mana. This spell either heals the target for 2 HP or removes one of the poison effects.

>[Curse Form] [Linen Magic: Tight Fit]
With an open grimoire, and after touching the clothes of the wearer (if they are made out of linen cloth), you are able to change the properties of the target’s wear. (The target can try to avoid the touch by passing the DR.) Until the target uses a specific protection magic, you are able to either: make the clothes of the wearer so thin they are practically naked, make the clothes so heavy the target is unable to lift himself off the ground and his movements are slowed down (DR is raised by 10) and make them clothes so light it becomes easier for the ally to avoid the attacks (DR is lowered by 10). The effect on the clothes remains until your mana is run out, until cancelled or until countered by specific magic. You can use this magic on yourself. You can also use this magic in order to control the body of the wearer and cast a spell if you are aware of the spell’s working specifics. Using the magic in such way will cancel the effect next turn and will fail if you are unaware of the inner workings of the enemy grimoire.
>This spell costs 1d30+10 mana. The DR of this spell is 70.

If there are questions regarding mechanics further I am willing to answer them. Do keep in mind [Tight Fit] only works on linen clothing people wear. As the grimoire begins to turn the pages by your command, you soon realize that almost every other page but one is empty. You focus on that, a healing form spell. You move your lips to silently read the incantation of the spell; sheer curiosity, you do not wish to manifest it just yet. It is rare for commoners to reach highs only those with powerful spells and massive storages of mana are able to reach, so you never bothered to learn more. You are not sure how your newly acquired spell compares to power and helpfulness comparing to other people. Better?

At least, you will be helpful to the people around you. Maybe you can earn some money on the side as a medic? How happy your father will be about this spell? How helpful is it going to be in your profession as merchant?

You look around the room. From what you can see, every single teenager is satisfied with the grimoire they had received. Judging by the cover, it does not seem like a four-leaf-clover grimoire was awarded to anybody today, at least not in your region. That is a shame, you hoped to see one in flesh at least once in your life. You try to find Lucius anywhere in the crowd but it looks like he left as soon as he had received his grimoire. What is his magic?

As the crowd slowly begins to disperse and the hall turns empty, you decide to head for the exit. Right there, you spot a tall, tanned woman with green eyes and short, ruffed hair. Her white clothes are exposed in all the wrong places. On her shoulders you notice a blue, silk robe top with a unique emblem of a Magic Knight’s Squad: a blue rose. In an energetic spin, she seems to jump from one teenage girl to another until it ends up being your turn.

She shoves her head right in your face.

“Hello there!” she says with a grin, “What’s your name? I’m Sol! Today’s your big day, isn’t it?” She does not stop to let you answer, “You have probably realized, but I’m a Magic Knight from the Blue Rose! You should try to go for the exam, we need girls like you!” She probably said this to every other girl. Are they looking for strong members? You look at her with a visible confusion. Unless you ask something now, she is going to switch again.

“I don’t think a commoner like me should even be trying to join the Magic Knights.”

Her face appears expressionless for a mere moment before she grabs you by your shoulders and exclaims, “Nonsense. That is nonsense.” She then looks sideways before continuing, “I am a commoner myself, and that did not stop me. If you have the guts of a strong woman, you can do it. If you don’t, we’ll see it in the examination!”

You fidget uncomfortably as you politely escape her grasp, “I have a family business to take care off. Excuse me.”

She slaps her knees and straightens her back, “Oh, you are a merchant? I don’t think I ever been to your shop.”

“Yes,” you say, “It’s one of the textile shops in Kikka. It’s called- ”

“A tailor, eh,” she exhales, “Figures. We have our uniform and clothes fit by our errand boys.”

“E-errand boys?”

Her eyes brighten, “We could use a tailor who knows what they are doing, you will have to speak to the sister first though I’m sure she won’t mind. I don’t know how much your shop makes but we can make you double there!”

“I… this is not what we were talking about at all,” you lower your eyes but by the time you raise them Sol is already on the other side of the hall talking to another girl. Of course, you are not special; it is probably a peep talk she does to everyone she finds at least mildly interesting. You take a deep breath as you exit the tower.

Today starts your first day as a grimoire owner.

There is no reason to return home just yet. The ceremony went by too quickly – not even an hour. As far as you remember, the order today was for so big it will take you until midnight to finish. One hour less, one hour more – this will not make a difference; when else are you going to meet and talk to a real Magic Knight? You glance over at the enthusiastic Sol near the exit: she is explaining something to a timid girl. You decide to wait for her somewhere near.

You decide to take a stroll around the massive stone tower. You pass by at least a dozen teenagers practising their newly acquired grimoires, some even daring to ruin the picturesque trees and meadows with their spells… incredibly powerful spells – and they do not even look tired after using them.

You sigh and then narrow your eyes to try to spot your father’s assistant - Lucius. Lucius, a boy your age head height shorter than you. It would be an overreach to call you friends or acquaintances. His most distinct features were his long, ash-white unkept hair and deep blue eyes beneath it – though it was not like you were staring. You have never seen him wear anything but his plain, work clothes provided to him by your father. Wherever the two of you worked together he kept his silence. You minded, at first, and tried to make short talk but it was fruitless and you dropped it.

You sigh: he is nowhere to be seen. It would not be wrong to assume that he returned to your shop as soon as he left. He always tried to look as a hard worker, to your father. It’s much easier to do so when you are paid in payments and not in allowances. Of course, that is not to say you were unthankful to your father. Still, if Lucius is already in your shop is might be a good idea to follow him. As soon as you ask Sol a few more questions you will (?).

“Oh, just what are you doing here all by yourself?” a mocking voice asks you.
>>
Patricia Navika. A girl with light-brown hair with green ends and dark red eyes stops her step just a few meters away from you. She is wearing an elegant dress, one even you will not be able to make or afford to use materials for. Sardonically, she adjusts her braid before approaching you closer. Her eyes fall on you, “Are your parents not here to celebrate your big day? All of ours are here,” she smiles and then gasps, “Oh, I’m sorry. I forgot your mother passed and your father can barely afford the rent. It’s so sad he must work himself to bones,” Patricia shakes her head. She gives a moment of silence. “So sad. If only he would just agree to our little proposal. Imagine all the money, and my parents even promised to hire you and your father.” She presses her finger against your chest, “Your father is really hard headed, but I’m sure you might be able to convince him. I think we are being very generous; don’t you think?”

Is she picking a fight? You look in the distance: her friends, the other children of the White Yul group are watching from affair. No doubt, if you do something ridiculous, they are going to come for her aid – you are sure of it.

> Ignore her and continue to stay silent.
> Ignore her and walk away back to the tower.
> Punch her.
> “My father is working hard. We -are- going to stay in that location. We can afford the rent”
> “Just you wait, we are going to join the White Yul group eventually, and maybe even replace you.”
> “You already own half the business on that street, where does your greed end, Navika?”
> “I am sorry, I am looking for somebody. Let’s talk some other time.”

>“I am sorry, I am looking for somebody. Let’s talk some other time.”
>>
“I am sorry, I’m looking for somebody,” you tell her hastily, “Let’s talk some other time.”

Patricia’s finger slides off your chest. She closes her eyes and forms an innocent smile, “Oh, who are you looking for?”

You wave your hand at her, “Just one of our workers.”

“Is it the little guy?” she places a finger to her chin, “Oh, I think I remember him from when we visited your crude shop. The short, white-haired one? I am most certain he went… that way.” She points her green nail towards the forest on the horizon.

“Nairn Forest? That’s all the way to the border of the Forsaken Region.”

“I do not know,” she hums and shrugs at you. She then turns away to return to her group, “Do think about my proposal. The longer you wait,” she pauses and repeats, “The longer you wait the less yuls we will be offering.”

With such, she gives you one more smile and then departs. You allow her to walk far enough to not see your grump expression; how dare she? From all the White Yul families, the Navika family has been the biggest thorn in your side, and they are one of the richest families in all of the Common Region. Merchants at core, they have an incredible influence and sense of opportunity to buy out promising trade shops when they were at their weakest. Even amongst incompatible trades, the fight on the trade streets is ruthless. Several times now your shop went through harsh times but with hard work and dedication you and your father had managed to avoid a sell-out…

Yet still, while owning a shop on the High Street is incredible enough and no doubt took your mother and father absurd dedication and resources, being part of the White Yul is even harder. Only six families so far had managed to accomplish this feat, and it’s thanks to them you know the requirements. One, one is supposed to gain a blessing of a noble family; they say that Verninie family has the support of one of the royals. Two, the requestor is required to yearn at least two thousand yul per day. Three, you had to employ at least forty yul workers of common birth; those born in the Forsaken Region are not allowed to be counted in this census. Four, you have to own about five percent of the High Street. The High Street in Kikka is massive, to achieve this you need at least two, if not four, more houses to own. Those requirements and obvious noble nepotism make all of this dubious.

You take a heavy breath. Someday, perhaps. Once you return to the Tower’s entrance and make sure that Sol is not busy, you once more approach here, “Um, Sol?”

The tanned woman turns to face you, you have to raise your eyes to look at her eyes at not her cleavage, "Oh, hello there again!"

“I only have healing magic, is it possible to pass the exam with just that?”

She rolls her eyes in a playful consideration, “Only healing magic? It will be harder; you might like to learn some other spells. One of the tests is a sparring match,” she blinks and hushes her voice, “But I did not tell you that.”

“I see,” you nod.

“But as you might know,” she continues as she straightens her back, “It’s not common for people who are used to healing magic to switch to offensive magic or defensive form. They are all extremely hard to master on their own. If you can prove yourself a good and reliable healer in the examination, I am sure my sister will notice you!”

“About your offer… What will my duties and benefits and payments be if I were to join you as a tailor?”

“Hmph, I told you not to give up,” she says.

“I’m not.”

“Well… I am not the one who will be employing it, but if you are as good as I think you are – better than the boys. In fact, you will immediately have errand boys to instruct under your care. Our clothes and uniforms get dirty and ripped quite often, so you will never be at loss for work. You will be provided with regular payment, but I can’t say how much for now, as well as your own room in the Blue Rose base. We eat delicious food in our main hall too, sister makes sure of it! She is so caring for our health. In fact, I must be going now, but why don’t you visit us when you have the time?”

She gives you a firm handshake before taking a sit on a beautifully decorated, flying broom. She shakes her head playfully at you, “Just take notice where I fly to. Our base is over there. If you really want to continue working as a tailor, but with us, I’m sure sister will not mind… But being a Magic Knight is so much more exciting!”

“Wait,” you stop her flying lifting off, “Have you seen a short, white-haired boy, perhaps? I’m looking for him.”

“Oh, your friend?” she narrows her eyes, “I usually don’t care for the boys… But white hair like his is unusual, and he rushed away so fast out of the tower he struck me on his way out. I hope he does not treat you the same way.”

“He was in a hurry? Do you know where he was going?”

“To Kikka, wouldn’t he? You guys are from there – are you not?”

“Yes. We are,” you nod positively, “Thank you, safe travels.”

You give her a friendly farewell as the tanned woman swiftly lifts off the ground on her broom. Your eyes follow her fading figure until the small dot that is her disappears somewhere in the east. That is at least a day’s travel to reach the Blue Rose’s base, if not further. How easy it would be to travel with a magic broom (you don’t even need a grimoire to fly one, just a little bit of magic) … but they are just so damn expensive!

You soon notice the elder master of the tower watching at you with a confused expression, as if asking as to why you are still here. Indeed, it appears that everyone else but you had already left. You give him a meek, reassuring wave before you depart.

It takes you about two hours to return back to Kikka. The castle town of Kikka, your home city, stands in close proximity to the Noble Region, and thus is one of the richest towns in the Common Region. Various merchants, from foods to weapons, come to Kikka for business, which makes the Kikka’s market one of the liveliest markets within the entire Kingdom. In the centre of it stands the Hight Street: the location of the most luxurious and exclusive shops. You pass by several of the lowly merchants and tradesmen before you eventually reach the steps of your two-storey house which triples as both a work station and a shop. The door before you is locked.

As you recall, it would take an entire day to finish the order given to your shop by the recent client. It seems the client’s plans are to redecorate his entire house in textile – why else would he order so many curtains? You open the metal lock with your key before you pull the heavy door and enter inside. The dim light of the dying candles is the only thing to greet you back. The window shutters are closed: it looks like your father did not even enter the shop wing of the house today. You pass by the counter as you enter the workshop room - is it twice the size.

The heavy linen materials are sorted by quality, colour and size. Above them are shelves with alchemical dyes used to infuse the cloth with simple, but practical, magical properties such as keeping them cleaner for longer. One that makes the cloth immune to wine stains is extremely popular, and almost empty too. Those are expensive. You notice the finished curtain order already sorted and prepared on the table nearby. Already?

“Lucius?” you raise your voice to shout above the stairway, “Father? I’m home.”

No response. You fluster as you begin to quickly reach the second floor and your father’s room. If he is not in the shop, and not in the workshop, he must be here. The door appears to be closed from the inside. You lean your ear before deciding to knock. As you begin to listen, a loud, as if collapsing, thud echoes deafly from inside the room…

Quickly, you rush down the stairs and back after picking a thin piece of linen cloth. Carefully, but not wasting too much time, you push it into the small empty space beneath the door. Once the cloth is half way through you touch it with your fingers and concentrate. A greyish glow escapes your fingertips and begins to slowly surge through the cloth, as if making it your pet snake. You focus and jab the heavy sliding latch with the magicified cloth. You release the magic to open the door and rush inside.

The room is well lit with an enchanted lantern, as if recently used…

You gasp in shock when you notice the body of your father laying unconsciously on the floor. In panic, you approach it fearing the worst. Once you are able to see his hard breathing and the painful expression on his face, you calm yourself. At least he is alive. A couple of documents from the stack are spread around the flooring as if he hit them during his fall. There are no sights of blood anywhere. The window appears slightly opened but it does not look to be broken through. All the cupboards, drawers and wardrobes in his room appear to be untouched…?

You spend 14 mana.

Your father restores 2 HP.

The grimoire manifests a lengthy layer of linen cloth that slowly envelopes the unconscious body. The sparks of mana raise from the cloth as its effect begin to rejuvenate his body. Your father’s expression soon changes to a more relaxed one and once you slap your fingers a few times before his face he begins to regain his conscious.

“Cyn… thia?” he mutters in his usual, grump voice as he attempts to move or twist himself. He fails to do so.

Did your magic not work? Is his wound too much for your spell? Perhaps it is magical in nature?

“It’s me,” you give him a nod as you take his hand into yours, “What happened here?”

He winces, “I… my spine… Did I break it?” he tries to look you in the eyes, “Ugh. Lucius, he went to the office with me and then… someone attacked us…” It catches breathe after every word, “It’s a blur but… Cynthia, be careful.”

You check on your father one more time before you confirm that there are no life-threatening injuries. Reassured, you decide to look at the floor closer. You take the magic lantern into your hand to make it slightly brighter. Quickly, you spot several thin footprints left by a boot on the paper documents. You try to spot any leading to the door, wardrobe or the window but it seems as if their boots were not dirty enough to leave any on the floor.

“Do you remember how they looked?” you ask your father

“No…” his voice dulls, “Whoever it was… they attacked us from behind.”

You take a glance outside the window. The time is still early morning, and the sun is not the brightest it can be. Your curiosity is perked: you lean closer once you see two strange, clocked figures outside of your shop. Someone passing by? No, they are acting strange. Customers? The sign outside should be explicit enough that the shop is closed today. They are simple standing still, as if waiting.

“Is there… something going on outside?” your father asks.

You nod. “Yes,” you hush before you continue spying on the strange individuals. You duck when one of them raises their head to look at the window; you hope he did not see you. You wait a couple of second before you look outside again. The hooded figures - in quite the eccentric robes - begin talking, they gesticulate as if having a low-key argument. Soon, one of them removes a hand watch and begins moving towards your shop… before his figure disappear you notice his grimoire emerging from the air. The second person turns to face the window…

“I will be back,” you reassure your father.

You rush downstairs, your hand slides by the wall as you make way into the shop wing. You catch your breathe as you stare down the closed door. You quickly glance around the shop in search of something to protect your house and yourself: just scissors. You try not to move and not to make any sounds in order to appear as discreet and unseen as possible. You take a few steps closer until you hear some movements right outside the door.

“-enough time,” a manly voice whispers as if standing right behind ear before another sentence follows, “Fire Magic: Cinders”. You gasp and quickly step back. Momentarily, thick black smoke begins to pour from under the heavy, wooden entrance. In a few moments later, the burning flames themselves emerge and begin to quickly creep into your shop. If those flames reach the cloth, your entire house will be covered in fire in no time!

“Somebody, help!” your scream echoes through your house. The fire is louder than your voice.

Swift to react, you push your open palms to grab as many linen cloths in your grasp in close danger of going aflame as you are physically able to. Your mana passes through your hands as the fire continues to quickly consume the door. You close your eyes to form a powerful connection with all the mana inside the linen cloth as you can. Once the connection is formed, you make them slither off the tables and sling into the opposite side of the room like some sort of massive nest of textile snakes.

With the most dangerous of hazards away, you rush into the workshop in search of something you pray to still have in stock – heat resistant alchemy dyes. You slam the cupboards open trying to find the correct label; your heart continues to quickly beat in panic. How are they allowed to just set your house on fire in broad daylight?!

The dim and thick smoke rapidly continues to gather above the ceiling of all the first level rooms. You cough, your vision worsens. Luckily, and eventually, you are able to find what you came here for. A single flask. You do not care for the price or the ingredients. Not now. You rush back into the shop wing where the door is a giant brazier.

You tightly grip the dye vial in your hand. Raising one of your hands to block the smoke and protect your eyes from the fire, you slowly and carefully approach the blazing door. Once you make sure you are close enough, you open and toss, first the liquid then the rest of the vial, into the fire. The flame begins to crack, sizzle and wither with an incredible intensity. You cough as the grey; toxic smoke begins to char the ceiling. You have no choice; the air will only worsen the fire. You cover your face with some cloth as the fire slowly dies down until only the completely burned and fragile door remains beneath it. You wager, a single kick can make it come tumbling down.

You drop in cold sweat. Whoever did this can still be outside, with his grimoire… and there are no more vials.

Once you confirm that there no hot cinders left, you hurry to the second floor, where the traces and damages of the smoke are less present and visible than the ones on the first floor. You sigh in relief: considering your father was lying on the floor, there is no way he was harmed by the smoke even if it managed to reach his office. Strangely, you find yourself standing in front of a closed door once again. You dislocated the latch, so why…?

Before you can blame the draft, you are able to recognize the voices inside. A dialogue between two people.

“What… why were… you hiding there…?”

“Nothing. I know nothing.”

“Was this you who… did this to me?”

“I did nothing,” he pauses, “All you need to know is that I am resigning.”

“…What are you… talking about?”

You slam the door wide open and as soon as you do so, a sudden gust of wind pours into your face. The candle lights flicker and the lightweight papers scatter into the air. Your father is lying in the same location you found him, though his head is turned towards the window on which another figure is sitting upon. Lucius. Under his unkept hair, you are unable to catch the expression he is making, or his eyes. Is he about to jump off? Run away?

“Don’t you dare to run away before I question you,” you threaten him as you step forward.

He grunts and scowls as he turns to face you, “Cynthia…”

“Careful, Cynthia… if I am right-” you father begins before you interrupt him.

“What is going on here, Lucius? Where were you hiding when you house was set on fire?”

“I don’t know who and why set your house on fire,” he shouts before his blue eyes finally meet yours.

Your house. Not his anymore?

“Why are you… doing this?” your father asks as he still tries to stand up. It’s impossible, his spine is ruined.

“All I am doing is leaving, Francis.” He replies to your father before he raises one of his open palms and his grimoire begins to slowly manifest from the air, “Let me leave peacefully, Cynthia. You won’t see me again.”

Your basic, linen magic, is extremely simplistic and weak. The clothes all the way downstairs have already run out of their mana. Annoyingly, there are not that many textiles inside father’s room: your clothes, their clothes, and father’s bed upper sheet and blanket. Even if you try to use them, it will still take time to touch and enchant them.

“You did not answer a single one of my questions, Lucius.”

“I told you as much as you two need to know. Sorry,” he says with an uncomfortable harrumph before he turns away to face the window. Before you can even react, the boy jumps off the second floor and into the paved roads. His fall does not take longer that blink of a moment, he lands straight on his shoulder and rolls further to ease the fall.

His left arm falls and sways in uncanny matter, clearly dislocated or even broken. He places his hand on his shoulder and visible trails of bluish mana seep into his injury. He does not bother to offer you a second glance as he rushes away from the streets and into the corners between the workshops and other market buildings.

Damn it all, this is supposed to be the most expensive street in Kikka; where are all the Magic Knights?!

You decide to let Lucius escape, for now.

You slam the window shut: the last thing you want is for anybody else to break into the office. You kneel before your father. You can’t just leave him like this, lying all alone on the cold, uncomfortable floor. Your father is not a small man, you could even say he was rather fit; to knock him out so horribly would take some powerful magic.

“What happened?” he asks you as you help take a sitting position. He really can’t turn his back. “You said there was fire? And Lucius…”

“Let’s worry about Lucius later, father,” you sigh, “And yes, I saw two people one of whom used fire magic to try burn our shop to the ground. They didn’t.” You try to turn it into a joke, “But we might have to stop selling a fire-resistant cloth for a few months.”

“You used the dye?” he catches on quickly as his brown eyes fall on the floor, “Quick thinking, Cynthia.”

“Thank you. Now just sit here,” you tell him as you turn to leave, “I’ll be back with somebody who can heal you, and hopefully a Magic Knight too.”

You leave through the burned down door by opening what is left of it with a kick, and then climbing over the rest. It seems this little incident did caught attention of your neighbours, as well as regular passers-by. A small crowd has gathered, and while the majority of them appear to be merely curious, some of them look very worried. An older lady with white hair, gathered in a bun, from the shop just across the street is quick to approach you.

“Cynthia,” she pants, “I saw the smoke, is everything alright?”

You nod, “The door is the practically the only damage, miss Adeliza. But my father… I need a powerful healer.”

She places a hand to her chest, “Oh no, is he…?”

“No, he is still alive, conscious and talking. Please,” you beg, “Can you call a Magic Knight while I go find Siegfried?” She hesitates and you insist, “If those bandits are not stopped your shop could be next.”

She pauses and then nods. Nobody wishes to bother Magic Knights while they are busy protecting the realm, but is your house and your shop not part of the realm? They are – if they don’t have enough Magic Knights they should just hire more. If they can’t even protect the most expensive street in the Kikka how will they manage to protect the rest of the Common and Forsaken regions?
>>
You rush to find the house of the most renewed and unpopular medic on the High Street, and despite not seeing him for about seven years now, his well-kept, red-bricked house with wild, exotic flowers of dark purple growing on the very walls of it still holds distinct in your memory. Now in his older days, Siegfried Cogenum was a brilliant man who used to be a personal medic of a noble, and the money he earned was enough to allow him his safe retirement. It is near impossible to find a non-Magic Knight healer in the Common Region who can come even close to compare to him. You knock on the door with utmost carefulness and respect, until a voice calls you.

“Enter.”

You enter the dim light but beautiful guest room, in which Siegfried is rocking on his chair and smoking a pipe. The vapour of the magical drug is spread across the room in even cloud, it hits and relaxes you almost immediately.

He runs his old fingers through his sharp, long yet thin beard - which almost pokes him in his chest - before he turns to face you, “You are,” he takes another puff and narrows his eyes, “Francis’ daughter. I remember you.”

Despite his name, there was a reason Siegfried was the last resort for people in the Hight Street – even for the White Yul families who could afford their own personal medic. He was incredibly frugal and sluggish, and he would refuse service on the drop of the fly unless proper respect was shown to him. When you fell ill with a magical chest infection, your father brought you to him. He healed you as if the magical powers of other healers were nothing and all the expensive remedies were snake oil. But afterwards, your father ate nothing but bread and water for about two weeks, although he tried to hide it from you. You were young, but the memory is still fresh.

“Yes, respectable Siegfried,” you try to hide your cringe as you bow, “I need your services.”

“Hm,” he hums as he looks at the massive, gilded clock on his wall, “Hm…” he continues to ponder.

“My father is unable to move,” you explain, “Even my healing magic did not work, he needs a stronger magic, like yours.”

He waits until the chair stops from rocking and only then he slowly stands up from it. He puts his pipe into a filled ash tray and nods, “This is not your first time; you two should be able to afford it,” he states this like a fact.

It takes the two of you longer than necessary to reach your shop. Siegfried is a slow man, but it seems he refuses to use a stick despite his age. Time, it is the only thing his magic is unable to heal against. By the time the two of you approach the house, the crowd has been dispersed. Siegfried follows your motion to where your house is. He stops in front of the door and does not enter until you respectfully open the collapsing entrance and invite him. You try not to show too much displeasure. Inside the shop, a find a tall Magic Knight is inspecting the rooms. He turns to face you but you ask him to wait. You force yourself to assist Siegfried with the stairs where you leave him with your father to do his healing; of course, personally, you would like to see another healer in action…

You return back to what appear to be a slightly agitated Magic Knight. You are able to recognize his uniform, a cloak, as well as an emblem on it of one of the squads: The Purple Orca. He does not look too concerned.

“I want you to catch the arsonists and people who attacked my father and force them to pay for the damages.”

The brown-haired Magic Knight lazily narrows his eyes, “Of course, we will do your best to find them.”

“Ask you can see, I stopped it before the fire could grow any worse; if I didn’t, both me and my father would be dead and the fire would spread into other houses, too,” you slide your fingers across your eyes, “Please…”

“Do you remember anything about them?” he asks you in a monotone tone of voice. What is… this feeling?

“Y-yes,” you stutter as you begin to bend the fingers on your right hand in a count, “Let’s see. There were two of them outside, their faces were hidden behind hoods of their eccentric robes. They had patterns, triangular shapes spread all over them, from what I remember.” You continue, “One of them had a pocket watch, so they couldn’t be beggars or peasants.” It was pre-planned; how couldn’t it be? “They were adult, for sure, and one of them had a fire affinity, he called his spell ‘Fire Cinders’”. Surely, that will make it easier for you to find him?”

The Magic Knight adjusts his robes. Despite what he says, you can’t help but feel like he is disinterested.

“Fire affinity is not rare, neither is such spell. If he had a unique magic, it would be easier to track him,” he pauses, “You sure it was a man?” Is he just asking those things because of protocol? Are you just getting paranoid here?

You nod, “He had a manly voice. I am not sure of the second.”

“Anything else?”

You startle in consideration. Should you tell him about Lucius? Is it safe now to put the blame on it? Lucius, he worked in your shop for over three years now, and he never gave you a reason to doubt him. Your father talked highly of him, he loved him dearly and never made him feel unwelcome. One can’t just betray all that, right…?

Update 2/2

“There was one thing more,” you hesitate with you reply, “There was a boy, he was working for us, but…”

“But?” the Magic Knight raises his eyebrow.

“He was very apprehensive today,” you say, “I think he was assisting or was even part of that group,” You describe him in full detail; despite his present ignorance, you hope that the Magic Knight will remember at least some of the things you said. His white hair, his deep blue eyes, his common clothes, his smart posture and calm, measured manners of speaking; you tell the Magic Knight as much information about Lucius Osta as you can recall.

He patiently hears you out, “I understand.” He repeats. “We will keep our eyes open for him and other arsonists.”

You can’t save a feeling that he is not being completely honest. How many Magic Knights have you met and spoke to personally? There are rumours and gossips, likely true, that a lot of Magic Knights abuse their position for their own gains. If this Magic Knight is one of them, then he won’t even raise a finger without a proper recompense…

“Thank you,” you give him a half-bow.

He gives you a still nod in return after which he turns away and soon disappears from your sight completely. Reassured (or not?) you return to your father’s office where he and Siegfried are already waiting for you. Upsettingly, your father’s expression isn’t one to reassures you. You interrupt him when he opens his mouth.

“Did you heal him?” you ask Siegfried straight.

“I did not,” the older man speaks harshly as he begins to fill his pipe with some kind of smelly, blue dried herbs. He leans somewhat on the table, “It is not a usual magic. I would prefer if you told me this beforehand. It is not a regular trauma, it is a curse by an affinity of magic I have not yet seen, and I can only guess it’s nature and type.”

“Can you heal it?” you cough, “‘Respectable’ Siegfried?”

“Yes,” he says as he pushes his thumb into the pipe, “But that is going to cost you a thousand yul.”

Thousand yul, it’s near impossible for you not to gasp in shock. That’s a robbery.

Your father is shaking his head.

“We need to heal you,” you insist, “That curse is not just going to disappear by itself.”
>>
“I know, Cynthia,” your father says after a pause, “And until I see you married and I die peacefully absolutely certain that you will be alright, I will not you leave alone with this shop,” he follows, “But even after we deliver today’s order to the client, which is saved thanks to you, the incoming rent and repairs will cost us… money. We will need to close the shop for the repairs, and I don’t want to see you hurt, we will need to hire some protection. …And without Lucius, until we find another worker who will agree to work for his wage, it will be very hard for us to take additional, custom and high-paid requests.” You can see dark circles under your father’s eyes, it’s hard to guess if those are from the curse or from all that overwork. Why is this happening to you? “My healing can wait…”

You turn to face Siegfried, as if begging him to reconsider after hearing the situation you are in... but his expression remains immutable.

> “No, your health takes priority. I will find a way to earn those thousands yuls.”
> “Once the Magic Knights catch them, they will pay us back for all the damages.”
> “If you think that is the best idea. I’ll make sure we can pay for your treatment as soon as possible.”

[Update 1/2]

“No, your health takes priority. I will find a way to earn those thousands yuls.” You tell your father straight.

“When did you grow to be such an unruly daughter,” your father mutters, though there is no real anger or discontent in his voice.

There is an evident disagreement present on his face, however. The two of you silently stare daggers at each other. Eventually, he turns his head away and sighs. “I don’t wish to argue with you, Cynthia. And even if I wanted to stop you, I am in no condition to do so,” he looks at both Siegfried and then you, “Unless I tell you we can’t-”

“Respectable Siegfried,” you take a few short steps to stand in-between your father and the elder healer, “We have means of paying you, and I want my father to be joy-walking as soon as it is possible. But as you can see, if we pay you as much as you ask us to, our shop is going to be in big financial troubles. Is it possible for me to pay you in some other way?”

“This is not a charity, and I do not waste time,” he answers you calmly, he even yawns, “I do not need a maid, I do not need a courier, and I do not need a cook. You pay me for my magic and my mana, there is nothing more to it. If I will ever need your specific skills, I will pay for them just like people pay for your clothing, the price you ask.”

You grumble, but you try not to show it on your face. You give him a short nod. If you try to argue, reason or even banter with Siegfried any more, he will just turn away and leave. As far as you know, he is that sort of person.

You leave and then return to the room with a very heavy poach full of zinging yuls. Siegfried waits until you give him the bag before he begins to painstakingly take out every single coin and count them. This will take a while.

“Don’t worry, father,” you reassure him, “I met a Magic Knight during my grimoire ceremony at the tower, she offered me a position as a tailor. We might have to close the shop until we find another yul worker and get the repairs done, but that does not mean we will have to sell our house! I will work at the Blue Rose’s headquarters for a few months and then-”

The coin column Siegfried has been so meticulously adding up falls and scatters. His fingers tremble. You notice a short shock over his face before he calms down and stands up. You father gives you a signal to assist him.

> Do not push further. Silently help Siegfried collect the coins off the floor and then watch him heal your father.

[Update 2/2]

What a strange reaction. You decide to delay potentially personal question until your father is completely healed, as if not to spook Siegfried away. You put the yuls on the table per the man’s instruction. The elder removes a strand of old, grey hair off his face before he returns to the chair to continue counting each coin one by one. The speed of his gesticulations and mathematics is less than desirable, but with his meticulousness it takes him about ten minutes until he is finished. You keep specific amount of coins in your bags with proper labels so you know how many are inside each.

“Thousand yuls, as I asked,” he monotones when he approaches your father. You watch carefully as he removes his smaller than average Grimoire from the leather pouch over his belt. He lets it float into the air. It opens with a loud sound of flickering pages until it eventually stops on one and brightens in a pink glimmer. Many pages of his grimoire were filled. “Don’t move,” he instructs Francis before a pinkish goo seeps from his hands and then forms into a round bubble. The pure magic energy from his grimoire alone makes you uneasy. “Calamine Magic: Rosea Panacea.” The bubble slowly enters your father’s back before the glowing light grows dimmer and dimmer.

In just a few seconds after, your father’s ability to straighten and turn his back returns. To think it was so simple. You look at Siegfried, who hardly looks either tired or touched; what a difference in experience and mana. You are quick to approach your father and grab him in tight hug. Magic is truly wonderful. He returns the hug. When the two of you turn to thank Siegfried, you notice him already leaving the premise of the room with your… his money.

“Wait,” you say, “I… Thank you.”

“Next time make sure to tell me what exact illness you want me to heal,” he pauses, “And prepare money beforehand. It saves time.” But it was him who wasted all that time counting yuls one by one!

“When I mentioned the Blue Rose, it startled you. Is something wrong?” You ask. He can’t -unheal- your father, right?

“It is none of your business,” he replies sharply with a lesser calmness than usual, “I would prefer if you did not mention their name before me, ever. My dislike of them is justifiable.” He pauses, “I will see myself out.”

[Update 1/1]

You follow Siegfried to what once used to be an exit door. You make him see that you made sure he left safely, like a proper host would. Once that is taken care off, you pick the cheapest blanket you can find to place over the exit as to make some sort of barrier from the streets. Now that your father is able to move, maybe even better than before the curse spell, he follows you into the shopping wing to look over the arson damage.

“You made it sound worse than it is, Synthia,” your father smiles as he picks up a chair to get closer to the ceiling, “Charred, but nothing a few minor repairs can’t fix. And the second floor is practically untouched.”

“It’s the door, and the whole walkway,” you comment as you gesticulate.

“It wasn’t a powerful spell,” your father comments as he looks over the scorches, “Nobody of strong mana.”

“Only nobles have strong mana; they wouldn’t be creeping around in cloaks setting fire to doors.”

“That you are right,” he smiles as he nods his head towards the workshop room, “Come, let’s get this order ready.”

The overall cost of repairs, according to your father, ends up being less than you though. Including a completely new door and replacements of the wooden planks and stones around it, it would result to about 600-1200 yuls, depending on the door. Now, infusing your house with a fire magic protection spell would cost up 20 000 yuls. Good to know, but you might as well rent a second building for that kind of money. Hiring a guard wouldn’t be any cheaper either… Having to hire guards when this should be the most protected region in Kikka. Insane.

Can you really leave your father by himself? Unless by a cheap shot, his Scissor Magic can be an extremely dangerous tool. He can protect himself; you have seen it do himself when you were a kid. Nothing to worry about.

The two of you decide to skip the Lucius topic until the Magic Knight returns with some good news. Once the evening falls, your client, a well-off citizen of Kikka, comes to retrieve his order. He is a rather nice and swell, if not a bit eccentric, individual. What he thinks reflects on his expressions as see-through as a mirror. His shocked face when he discovered the burned down door was awfully funny, and so was his relief when he found his order safe and sound. You did not get to hear what him and your father went to discuss, but the transaction ended up successfully, and the half-payment was now in your father’s hands. Once all the immediate problems were taken care of, you assisted your father with cooking dinner. Now, he finally had the chance to congratulate you.

“I always knew your magic was going to be something special,” you father comments as he gets to inspect your grimoire up close, “But to think it was Linen Magic… What I’m not surprised about is you having healing spells.”

“What’s that suppose to mean?” you pout.
>>
“I never though you would be an offensive type,” he smiles, “I can’t think of any other form that fits you better.”

“If I had an offensive spell, I could’ve stopped them all by myself,” you mutter, barely audible.

“…You mentioned the Blue Rose offering you a position in this Headquarters. Can you tell more?”

“O-of course,” you nod.

You tell your father about your short encounter with the member of the Blue Rose Sol and how she, at first, actually offered you to take the Magic Knight examination. While your father immediately reacts with understandable worry (it is, after all, an incredibly dangerous job), you reassure him that after hearing you were a textile tailor, she offered you a job in repairing their uniforms and other cloths in their Headquarters. You tell him about the benefits and the payment she had promised you, as well as how far their base is located.

Your father sounds melancholic, “If you accept their offer you will not have to worry about a thing…”

“I won’t,” you shake your head, “I know how much this shop means to you, and the memory of my mother. I will not let you sell this shop, or let it be closed down or sold to one of them rich snobs of the White Yul. The only reason I am going to the Rose is to earn us some money, maybe enough to stop worrying about paying the rent.”

He covers his eyes with his sleeve to hide his tears. He leans away from the table to take out a small, folded piece of white cloth. He pushes it towards you. “This is a gift from me and your mother for your grimoire ceremony.”

You open the cloth to reveal a strange, somewhat cheap looking necklace with about fifty yul coins neatly spread around it. They are all incredibly old, a design of engravings that is no longer common, but also incredibly clean. White clean.

“T-thanks,” you give your father a poor smile. What a strange gift.

“It might be tacky and weird,” he smiles, “And if I want to keep it in your pocket I will understand. When me and your mother first met and decided to aim for opening a shop on the High Street, we were both young and poor. The yuls on that necklace are our first earnings together. I wanted to treat your mother for some dinner, but she instead decided to use those yuls to make memorabilia you now hold. She tricked me by paying for it herself.”

He chuckles. You hold down your tears. You do give your father a response but he probably knows how you feel.

You enter your room and fall on your bed. Tomorrow you will…

[Update 1/X]

Your mana has been restored.

You wake up the next day in the early morning, just like you usually do. Outside, the sun is still far below the horizon and the sunshine just barely breaks the dawn. You switch your sleeping pyjamas with the nicest set of clothes you own. You fold and put your sleeping clothes into your bag, where all your other essentials are waiting. It’s irresponsible to prepare at the very last moment, and you always forget something when you are in a rush…

When you hear knocking on the door…eh…wall, you are quick to rush down to greet the home delivery girl. Small in stature, and barely awake, she is no older than twelve years old. You knew her since she was ten. She hangs you a basket full of fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts, a bottle of milk and a dozen of eggs. You glance through the basket just barely; you trust this girl. The two of you exchange a short talk, especially about the door and the arson accident, before you give her several dozen yuls for her service. You are just the first on her very long list.

Just in time for your father’s wake up, you prepare regular breakfast for the two of you. Unfortunately, you magic is near useless in assisting you with those “wifely” tasks, you have to do them by hand. An omelette, some boiled vegetables, a cup of orange juice – the good stuff. You make small talk and share a few jokes before the sky turns bright and you take your leave. Your father gives you a strong hug, and you return it – yours is much weaker.

You cross the street to knock on the door of one of the shops. An old lady opens.

“Cynthia,” the owner of the glassmaking shop looks at you, her door is half open. She is still in her night gown. “Oh, dear, I am so happy you are still safe. D-did they catch the criminals?” she says with a worrying glance.

“Not yet, but thank you very much for calling the Magic Knights, miss Adeliza. I’m sure they’ll catch them in no time.”

“Oh, of course. We can’t have him return. I hope they will improve the safety of the High Street.”

You nod before you ask, “Miss Adeliza, I was wondering if you have a magical broom that I can borrow from you?”

“Oh, are you planning on leaving?” she asks you with surprise, “I don’t think your father will be happy.”

“We talked this out,” you reassure her, “I will not be gone for longer than… a few weeks? Maybe a month.”

“Where are you going? You can tell me.”

“Should I?” you bite your inner cheek playfully, “Let’s just say I am going to visit a Magic Knight Squad.”

“Magic Knights, how wonderful!” she exclaims, louder than needed, “Oh, I dreamed of becoming one when I was about your age, but for a commoner to become a Magic Knight… It’s near impossible dear, sorry to tell you.”

“I am not going to join them,” you try your hardest not to sound rude, “So… can I?”
>>
“I do have a magic broom that I do not use, it is a bit broken but you can still fly it if you are careful,” she tells you, with a poor smile “You might end up breaking it if you are not cautious.” She pauses. “How about this: I will lend it to you, and you can use it for the month you are gone, but I will ask you to get it repaired. It shouldn’t cost you more than fifty yuls.” What a scrooge.

[Update 2/X]

“That sounds fair,” you say. Renting a magical broom for fifty yul is more than a bargain, the cheapest ones can cost up to four hundred yuls. She asks you to wait for about five minutes as she leaves to get dressed. Afterwards, the two of you enter her shop where the preparations for a hard, busy days are taking place. You manage to get a quick look into the workshop room where her few yul workers, and her two sons, are seen cleaning the forges that are used to make the glassware her shop is famous for. On your way there you pass by some of the defected lamps, vases and all kinds of decorations. Each one is labelled as defected, yet you honestly can’t find a single fault. Achieving the perfection Adeliza Sharon strives for would be impossible without her glass shaping magic.

She leads you to one of the many rooms in the narrow basement. After a short rummage, she hangs you a slightly bend, and very old, broom. There is a single, massive crack going through the entire broomstick that was haphazardly, or at least to the very best of someone’s poor ability, fixed with some kind of adhesive paste. The sticks are old, and some of them appear to be half broken. What an understatement, if you not careful you might actually die trying to fly this thing. You hide your disappointment as you accept the broom into your hands.

“Thank you,” the corner of your lips forms a smile.

She gently pushes you into the streets, “Of course, dear.” She throws a glance behind her before she leans to your ear and whispers, “If you do meet a Knight Captain, do get an autograph or two for my sons – alright?”

“Of course, miss Adeliza,” you whisper her back. You can’t even remember who was the Captain of the Blue Rose.

When she closes the door, you walk to one of the open fields to practice flying the magic broom. How long has it been since you used a magical broom? Five years? Seven years? A very long time. Even then, it was not even yours. They say once you learn how to fly a magical broom once, you will never forget how to. You put the broomstick between your legs as you then close your eyes and concentrate your mana. As soon as you do so, the broom begins to sporadically jump from side to side; it practically refuses to raise up. It takes you about half an hour to get the damaged magic tool under your control (as well as a few mocking laughers from some passing bystanders). Eventually, however, you get yourself off the air. The broom continues to shake and sway with noticeable unbalance, but as long as you do not raise yourself too high, you find it to be travelable. First, you travel to the Grimoire Tower from which you then recall the exact place Sol flew towards. You follow her example.

Certainly, it is a day travel away. You pass by several of the small villages that you thought about of stopping in to dine in, but decided against. You arrive by evening, but the home base of the Blue Rose is not a building one can miss: it is massive and elegant. There’s a massive, iron barrier surrounding the premise of this mansion. The tiles of the massive three storey building are all aquamarine blue. Many of the decorations and ornaments on the walls and sides of the building appear to be made out of faux gold, even the entire gate… This is faux gold, right?

You land yourself at the very front of the gate. The windows of the building shine bright yellow. Surely, this must the place. You are the only one here before the gates, not even a guard or an overwatch. How cocky are they?

Personally, I didn't really want to play as the Noble character. Cynthia was the more interesting of the two remaining choices to me for a few reasons. Firstly, Textile magic sounded really unique and seemed like it could have a lot of interesting applications if we got to explore it further. Secondly, I liked the shopkeeper aspect of her backstory, it seemed like it would allow for some 'Capitalism ho!' type moments.

You infuse your hand with primordial mana in order to touch the gate without touching it – this is only way you know how to use your magic without involving linen cloth. After this, you prod the gate in order to knock it. The gate returns an uncomfortable shock, as if a powerful magic that is dwelling inside of it is pushing you back like an opposite magnet.

You harrumph and step back. A magical lock? It’s not like you were trying to break in…

Your thoughts are sporadically ruined by a sudden, massive tremble of the earth under your feet: a trap spell. You are too fast for the slow construction to react; its earth fingers do not even scrap your body before you are already out of its way. The golem stops and slowly turns to face you, its yellow eyes are burning with powerful magic – it is not going down easily even if you had offensive spells. Despite the triggering of the trap, nobody has yet entered the front yard to check what is happening, although you do manage to spot a few curious female figures in the windows of the mansion. [Update 3/X]

“Wait-wait-wait, I was invited here.” You scream at the golem who stop its open palm right in front of your face.

You take a deep breath of relief, before the fist closes right above your head. You duck just in time to avoid it.

“Oh, come on,” you mutter under your breath as you quickly dash away from it, “I’m saying the truth here!”

“What is going on here?” a playful voice of Sol questions as she approaches the gates. The golem stops as soon as it hears her voice. “Oh, it’s you.... What was your name again?” she smiles welcomely at you, after which she jumps over the tall fence using some kind of earth spell in order to land on the wrist of her standstill golem.

“Cynthia,” you answer once you are sure the golem is no longer active, “Are visitors really that rare here?”

“We are just testing some things,” she innocently waves your concerns away, “It was only yesterday I met you, wasn’t it? You are sure quick to decide.” She places both of her palms under her chin, “I like that in a woman.”

[Update 4/4]

>I think I need to explain: if multiple suggestions are proposed by multiple people, multiple will be picked and used unless they are sabotaging each other, at which point I will pick the most popular one.

“Who is this golem even protecting the base from?” you ask her curiously.

“Oh, you know,” the golem slowly begins to melt into the ground as soon as she reveals her grimoire, “Thieves, perverts, wild animals, enemy forces, spies, suitors… everyone but the members of the Blue Rose.” She smiles.

You give her a blank stare, “I see… that’s a lot of… enemies.”

“But this golem is more for show,” she gives the massive earth construction a soft slap, “My real one is about four times the size of this one, and he’s far stronger, durable and faster; he’s also near impossible to avoid.”

You can practically see her nose grow longer. You smirk to yourself before becoming stoic:

“I am here for the position of the tailor. I hope you remember.”

“Hm, tailor? I though we were talking about joining us as Magic Knight?” she pauses in a ponder.

“It was both... I am a tailor, and wish to remain as such,” you cross your hands under your chest in discomfort.

“I might have lied a tiny little bit,” she says before stepping towards the gate. She presses against the gilded rose decorations with her palm and the gate gives in by swiftly opening a path inside. “But don’t worry! Come in!”

Lied? Does this mean they do not need a tailor? Or that the position is not as valuable as she made it out to be? You release a sharp breath to calm yourself down. No, you have to see this to the end. You always have the right to refuse, Cynthia. You’ll find another way if this does not work out. The brown skinned woman is incredibly quick on her feet, even when just walking; you follow her to the best of your ability through the garden of blue roses.

You can’t explain or say it for sure, but you can feel a very uncomfortable and cold gaze from the people watching you behind the massive, gilded windows. Of course, you know for a fact that most Magic Knights are made out of sons and daughters of noble families, and it was only in the half a century that commoners began to join in. If you became a Magic Knight, some of them would possibly, begrudgingly accept you, but working here as tailor, with all those nobles, is going to be a really discomfortable experience. It will be just like living near the White Yul families.

Sol smashes the doors of the mansion open with both of her hands; she welcomes you inside. The imposing building, even just the first floor, reveals itself to be even bigger inside than from the outside. The main hall greets you with a central fountain surrounded by a dozen of marble pillars, each one of them is scrupulously decorated with beautiful engravings one can probably spend hours looking at. Long, velvet banners of the group – the Blue Rose – are visibly and symmetrically spread over several the pillars. Silk blue curtains cover the windows like angelic wings. Massive golden (or gilded, you are still not sure) chandeliers brighten up the place but only half-way, as the hanging garden bushes force the shadow to appear like some dancing, ever changing thorn vines.

And then there is this. And that…

There are so many things to focus and describe on; you have never been in a place this majestic.

“W-wha… Ah… Um,” you mutter with discomfort before you realize you lost Sol in this pandemonium of visuals. You rush to find her, only to bump into someone’s chest. You apologize to the Magic Knight who arrogantly clears her throat at you. She says something alongside the lines of, “And just who might this be, dirtying up our floor?”

“I’m sorry,” is all you can comment to the big chested woman before you quickly dash away. Make no enemies.

You rub behind your ear as you sit down behind the oaken table you find Sol standing nearby, “I’m sorry.”

“I can’t blame you for being impressed by the place,” she smirks, “I was too. I am going to go find captain now. Just wait here.” You give her a nod. You place your hands on your knees. You are going to be working -here-?!

Once you close your eyes to remove your tiny, commoner figure from the picturesque setting of this main hall, a powerful slap against the surface of the table wakes you. It is the woman who bumped into you, and if you are to judge her by her red face, and quivering green eye, she looks incredibly angry. Her golden hair is hidden behind her armoured helmet. Aside from her white underpants and undershirt, she is wearing the uniform armour of the Blue Rose: a decorated breastplate, a collar plate, gauntlets, leggings and boots. On her shoulders there is the blue robe with the insignia of her squad. Just like every other person, she has a leather pouch with her grimoire inside.

“How -dare- you ignore me,” she whines as her iron fingers scratch into the table, “Is Sol is going to be bringing her commoner friends to our squad base now? What a laugh. This is not a public house. You, who are you? Apologize this -very- instance, and do it properly.”

[Update 1/x]

“I am sorry for not looking where I was going. I will be more careful next time,” you try to say as sincerely as possible.

“Pfah,” she smacks the table before pointing her finger at you, “You are lucky I am about to leave on an assignment. Just who are you, and why are you here?”

“My name is Cynthia, I am here to talk,” you tell her, making sure not to include your potential job hire.

“I hope you are,” she straightens her back and lifts her chin as if to look at you from above, “We have enough commoners here. Do not add up to the trash pile.” Starving you of your ability to reply back (not that you wanted to), she turns away from the table and soon leaves towards one of the many hallways of the Blue Rose mansion.

Great.

You make sure not to catch any wrong attention until Sol returns back with a Magic Knight… no, a Magic Captain, by her side. She is an incredibly beautiful, tall woman with blue eyes and long, blonde, braided hair. Just like the noblewoman before her, she is wearing the full set of armour. Compared to Sol’s shoulder cloak, her cloak is massive – it even drags somewhat on the ground behind her. Unlike the other noblewoman, she has a miniskirt of blue colour on top of her white trousers. She has a noticeable, fancy decorated helmet with a single fin protruding from the top, resembling a shark fin. When her cold gaze meets yours, it makes you practically shrink in size.

“Is this the girl you were talking about?” she asks Sol with indifferent attitude.

“Yes, sister!” Sol answers with extremely passion. She attempts to rub her shoulder with the woman as she does so.

The tall woman sighs and pushes her away, “I told you to call me Captain.”

“Ye-es, Captain!”

“Now leave us alone,” she commands the Magic Knight before quietly sitting behind the table you borrowed.

“What?” Sol exclaims in shock before she gives you strange, as if jealous, look. “Ok-ay, if you say so sister!”

“I do,” she retorts back with a sigh before removing her helmet and placing it on the table. You notice a gathering of many of the knights practically stalking your conversation from the side. Do they not have better things to do? “Ignore them,” she says as she puts her long braid over her shoulder, “And forgive me, I just returned from the mission. I will introduce myself: my name is Charlotte of House Roselei, I am the Captain of the Blue Rose Magic Knight Squad.”

“That’s alright,” you try to keep your emotions under control. This close, her mana is practically radiating.

“I was told your name was Cynthia, and that you wish to work here as our tailor,” she pauses, “No, a master tailor? For the laborious, simplistic jobs we have our errand boys, it would be too cruel for me to replace them with you. However, I am sad to say that even our master tailor position is currently occupied by a boy - Olyver.”

You duck your head towards her. So, you came all this way for nothing? You put your hand over the chair’s hand-rests to raise yourself. You guess you will have to find a second job as a delivery girl to help out your father.

She does not react to your sudden decision to leave. She, however, continues her explanation in calm monotone, “I would prefer if our dresses were treated by a female hand, or someone with background like yours. The Clover Kingdom is built on merit and hard work, and so it my squad,” she adds, “If you can prove to me and the rest of my knights - as well as the errand boys - that you are better, more capable and more deserving of this position than Olyver, there will be no refutations.”

“What do you mean by prove myself?” you ask all confused, “Are we going to compete somehow?”

“Only if you agree to this,” she says, “I will make it fair, each one of you will have two errand boys to instruct and assist you. We have a lot of ruined uniforms and clothes, some of them near impossible to fix, it will be up to you to decide what you can and can’t repair. I want to see what kind of damages you can take care of, in comparison to Olyver. Some of the Magic Knights in here will be giving you personal requests too. It will last for… one week.”

> “Is this Olyver not a friend with those boys, will they not sabotage my work?”
> “Won’t the Magic Knights be more biased towards Olyver, who worked here for way longer than I ever did?”
> “Do you really have no place for a regular tailor? I don’t want this Olyver to lose his job. Manual labour is fine.”

There are some awkward grammar mistakes here and there, but on the whole I think your writing is good. So far the quest has been progressing nicely. We're very much in sort of a setting up period right now, so it'll take time for the narrative to develop more.

[Update 1/2]

“I feel confident in myself, let’s do this.”

Charlotte leans her head to the side in a surprise. After a brief pause, she nods, “A good answer. “She stands up from her chair and places her helmet back on her head, “Fairly, we will pay you as a regular tailor for the duration of this week and we will give you a room and let you use our kitchen and other amenities.” She coldly stares as the all the curious people around you; they disperse almost immediately. This woman holds massive respect here.

“Follow me,” she says distantly. After a single step forward, her entire cloak spreads out with a powerful burst.

You ponder on all the likely ways this can all go wrong, and all the disadvantages you are going to stumble through facing somebody on their own home turf. But as you fall into the rhythm of Charlotte’s graceful march, as if not to interrupt it with your own clumsy one, you calm yourself. At least you will be able to bring some money back. You have been working as a tailor your entire life, and you have been using your linen magic for as early as you learned to control your mana. ‘You are a tailor by birth’, your father tells you, and can you argue? Your father is a Master Tailor himself; it is a position envied and yet respected by many. One has to be Master Tailor to own a business on the High Street, and to earn this title and all the qualifications properly meant a hard, royal exam.

Charlotte leads you through many hallways until the two of you stop in front of a single door. You do not even have to guess; you can practically smell the freshly repaired and prepared cloth from inside – it is a workshop.

“If you want to quit, do it now,” Charlotte comments without any emotion, “Let us waste no time here.”

You shake your head. You are a tailor by birth… That is who you are, right?

She opens the door and a powerful gust of hot air strikes your face. It is so hot it immediately makes you blush and begin sweating. As you narrow your eyes and look past the vapour, you see a massive, busy room – a tailor workshop (more like a factory). Dozens of expensive linen, wool and silk cloths were spread out on the wooden rakings, ready to be cut. You notice a few finished uniforms and dresses protected by some spell from all the steam… one such a dress would take weeks to make, and will cost at least thousand yuls just for work alone! You take a sharp breath – wrong idea, the hot air makes your throat sour and your eyes wet. You can see four boys running through the room and tossing variety of instruments ranging from scissors to needles to what-even-is-that to hot flat stones by magic, the whole place looks as if a levitation spell had gone wrong. All of the boys in here look no older than twelve. Charlotte strikes the bell above the door and everyone immediately freezes in place.
>>
“Is this a workshop or a Black Bull’s base?” she grumbles.

“Miss Charlotte!” the boys yell in excitement, “Miss Charlotte! We are so happy-”

The Magic Captain places her palm over her face, “Let’s step outside. Where is Olyver?”

All four of them glance to the side where a strange boy, about your age, is standing. His short brunette hair, as well as his entire set of quite varied and well-knit bluish working clothes, looks completely soaked and ruined. His brownish grimoire is floating by his side, and is still producing immense amounts of hot steam that the boy appears to be ignoring. Instead, he seems to be rubbing his cheek against one of the nearly finished dresses.

“Is that my – Olyver!” Charlotte yells as she strikes and closes his grimoire with a thorny, blue rose covered, whip.

The man blinks once his magic is interrupted. He looks at Charlotte with a visible confusion before his eyes flash in adoration, and he rushes to the woman’s side; he even pushes the boys away. “Captain! Oh, you finally decided to visit us again! I’m so happy, it’s been weeks! Oh, is this about your dress? It will be ready by the end of this week-”

“No, Olyver,” she pauses him and nods to the door, “Let’s go to the break room. I have something to discuss.”

“Of course, I always love talking to you Captain!” he says as he attempts to hug her. She stops him. The boy struggles against Charlotte’s strength until he notices you. “Oho who is this?” he asks. Before the two of you can even react, he catches you off-guard and starts rubbing his face against your side, “Wow, you have such nice clothes!” he exclaims as he pushes his cheek further, “Such a nice material, such a nice weave, are you a noble?!”

This guy is no regular. Still, what he is doing is making you uncomfortable. The blush is the fault of the hot air.

> “I made it myself.”
> “Can you please let me go?”

[Update 2/2]

“I made it myself,” you tell him. He raises his head and looks at you in surprise; he has deep, dark eyes, with just a tiny note of grey in them. “You made it yourself? That’s amazing!” He simply continues to rub his face on your clothes, “So comfortable, and nice, I can’t even feel a single crease. You have to teach me how you got it this-”

“Please let me go,” you ask him as kindly as you can possibly muster.

He pauses for a moment, just long enough for an awkward moment to form between the two of you, before he steps back and chuckles. “My bad,” he says as he starts buckling his shirt, “My bad. It was a compliment!”

“I realized that,” you tell him dryly before you turn back to follow Charlotte into a small, but much more pleasing and refreshing room not far from the workshop. As big as single bedroom, this room has two tables and several chairs, an unlit fireplace and a shelf with several jugs labelled with all kinds of drinking refreshments like moguro juice or enriched water. There are several half-empty jars of jam and marmalades present, as well as some bread.

“Sit down,” Charlotte tells the six of you and there isn’t a single one who disobeys her.

“Did we do something wrong?” one of the boys asks despite the heavy atmosphere.

“Not that I am aware of,” the Magic Knight Captain narrows her eyes at them, “But there might be a few changes.” She nods towards you, “This girl here is Cynthia. She might be replacing Olyver as the next Master Tailor.” Their immediate, harmonious gasp echoes through the room. You quickly glance away.
>>
“Did -I- do something wrong?” Olyver asks Charlotte. He begins to tuck his sleeves in nervous gesture.

“Listen to my words carefully, Olyver, just like you do when I instruct you on my designs,” she approaches the table where the boys and you are seated, “I only said ‘maybe’. Cynthia is a renowned tailor (What the heck did you tell her Sol?) and as such, this is going to be as much as test for you as it is a challenge for Cynthia. I want to see how good you are against a real tailor. The uniforms, and the clothes, and the dresses of the Blue Rose should be the best, they should be the envy of even the Silver Eagle or the Crimson Lion Squa, Olyver.”

Olyver looks at her in confusion, he gives you the same look after, “Why do you need to test me, exactly?”

Charlotte pauses, “As you know, the Blue Rose is a group of -female- Magic Knights. When we hired you, per your sister’s request, your magic was practically non-existent. However, you were talented, and with time, your mana and abilities grew. Now that you have a grimoire, I might even say you have a chance of achieving your dream.”

“By my dream, you mean-”

“Yes,” she says, “If you can prove yourself against Cynthia here, then I promise you that on the Magic Knight examination, if no other group accepts you, we will take you under the Blue Rose banner as its first male Knight.”

You can see Olyver’s face immediately brighten up. He now looks at you as a rival: a wall he must break though. Why is everyone so obsessed with becoming a Magic Knight? “And if another group offers me a position instead?”

“Well are you not -arrogant-?” she says, “Then, very well, you can join them instead.”

Olyver releases his tucked sleeves and leans forward on the table, all excited, “What is the challenge?!”

She sighs and gently lifts her helmet to rub her forehead. “Let’s see. For the duration of the week, we will separate all of you into two groups. You will continue to do your work as usual, Olyver, while I will explain Cynthia a few important essentials she should be aware of. At the end of the week me and the rest of the Magic Knights will judge who out of the two of you did their job best. He or she will then become the Head Tailor. The Magic Knights will be made aware of that we now have two workshops, but it will be up to them where to put their uniforms, as well as casual clothes, for repair. You might get some personal requests, as I mentioned before.”

“Two teams?” the boys exchange glances, “How… are we going to be separated?”

“That is up to you to decide,” Charlotte looks at both you and Olyver.

The boys practically look the same. Two of them are below ten years old, two are of them above.

[Update 1/1]

You raise your hand to pick two out of the four boys at random.

“Him and him,” you mutter as you close your eyes and point your finger at one and then another. When you look again, it easy to spot which ones you pointed at by their disappointed faces. Of course, they are very unhappy.

The first boy picked is the youngest out of the four – no older than seven; he has dark grey-yellow eyes and short, unkept sandstone orange hair. The second boy was the oldest of the four, with a long seaweed coloured hair tightened up in a single ponytail. He is wearing glasses that make his eyes look empty-white – it is a bit eerie.

“What? Me?” the young boy questions in annoying voice, “I don’t want to, I want to stay with Olyver. Viktor, you go with her,” he whines before grabbing his friend by his arm and pushing him towards you. The one with the glasses looks uncomfortable too, but he does not seem to be the speaking type. Maybe he’ll be easier to handle.

“I don’t want to, Pero,” the other young boy complains back, “She picked you. I want to stay with Olyver.”

“No, Olyver please, I don’t want to work with her.”

A magical whip comes out of Charlotte’s grimoire and smacks the edge of the table. The boys shut up immediately, “I will hear no complains, unless you do not value your job to the extent of doing something you -dislike- for a single week. Pero, Lilth, the two of you will be working under Cynthia’s instructions in the second workshop, and I want to hear no complains until this week is over, unless it’s serious, am I understood?”

“Y-yes, Miss Charlotte,” Pero forces out a surrendering sob while Lilth simply returns a silent nod.

Olyver is quick to rush from his seat to approach and grab you by your left hand; he does not seem to bother about personal space at all, “I wish you the best of luck. Let’s both do our best… Wow, you have such rough hands, you really -are- a hard worker.”

“Yeah, let us,” you reply back awkwardly as you remove your hand from the handshake, “Have a fair contest.”
>>
You give a farewell to the two youngsters who are to be your helpers but they do not return your wave in kind, especially the younger one. This is going to be a problem… You sigh. It’s been a hard and exhausting day of long travel for you. After the talk with Olyver and the boys, when Charlotte was showing you your workshop and then your small, but rather tidy and neat room with all the essentials you would need for a week’s stay, your stomach gives up and betrays you with a loud rumble. Charlotte kindly offers to guide you to the massive dinner hall. Despite it being long past the dinning hour, and almost all the tables now being empty and cleaned, some of the errand boys and a cook are still here. Charlotte asks for one of them to prepare you a delicious, if not a slightly lukewarm, roast with mashed potatoes and vegetable puree. She waits until you are seated, then, she explains to you a few additional things and location of places you should know. After, she leaves you alone in the dinner hall.

Despite it not being fresh, you end up finishing your food in a matter of minutes. You pick up the plate to place it into the barrel of cold water to clean afterwards. You seemed to catch a nervous glance of the kitchen girl. After a brief, awkward pause, she shyly turns away and returns to cleaning and preparing the open kitchen for what appears to be future breakfast. She looks adult, but just barely – maybe eighteen? You look around, is she alone?

This looks like an awful lot of work for one person. You hope Charlotte is paying her well…

“S-sorry to ask,” she mutters, barely audible, “I-I have not seen you before. Are you a new Magic Knight?”

“No,” you answer after you force yourself to hide a yawn, “I am… a new tailor.”

“A t-tailor,” she whispers as she continues to clean the plates, “T-that’s amazing too. S-sorry to bother.”
