>>3678088

You are Edgar Tristan Rood, child of an Executor who happens to be the overseer of the Holy Grail War that you're now a part of.

Three days ago, you became one of the seven Masters by summoning the Saber-class Servant thanks to a misunderstanding with the now-deceased Agrippa Brigante. Since then, you've officially entered the magic battle royale as a matter of principle, carried a very attractive girl named Charlotte through a hail of Archer's arrows, and begun building trust with your new neighbor Rider. At the moment, you're facing off against a member of the famous Einzbern family of magi and her Servant, Shielder.

~~~
>>
Saber may be holding her own, but she can’t stay this strong for extended periods. Shielder is so durable that he’s sure to outlast her. In that case, while the Servant is occupied, it falls to you to eliminate the Master before Saber runs out of steam.
The Einzbern girl doesn’t seem to care for this confrontation at all. You’re going to take advantage of that. You rush out from behind the other side of the tree to avoid the Servants’ duel. Your hand reaches into your hoodie to draw your-
“Berkano-Ansuz!”
You barely have time to turn your head and see Shielder’s fiery spell rocket towards you. When the magic projectile is no more than three feet from you, a chiming noise rings out and the missile slams against an invisible barrier at your side. Your magic amulet absorbs some of the resulting fiery explosion, but the force is still enough to send you rolling across the ground.
Shaken, but not slain, you pull yourself up from your sprawled position, head aching. Shielder can afford to keep tabs on you and even cast a spell while taking your Servant head-on? His skill is unbelievable! But you have no time for admiration. Saber’s assault has become more savage than before to devour the rest of Shielder’s attention. You couldn’t see it while you were behind her, but Saber’s face is contorted by a ferocity you thought impossible given her usual elegant manner.
You stand, and as you look up your eyes meet those of the Einzbern girl. She’s actually begun to pay attention to you. Her hands have stopped playing with what you can now identify as wire that she’s been making different shapes with. The girl looks very surprised. Probably because you managed to survive an attack from her Servant, even if it was just a low-level spell. Your temple is still throbbing. After a moment of eye contact, something appears to click with her; likely, the fact that you intend to engage her directly.
She holds out her right arm, and the wire begins to construct itself into a large bird of prey. But the process is too slow - you’re able to draw and throw a Black Key much faster than the avian takes form! You aim for the girl’s neck and hurl the weapon. It flies straight as an arrow. The Key strikes with incredible force, burrowing itself into a trunk behind the target… several inches to the right of her flesh. You’ve missed; you haven’t quite recovered from the disorientation the explosion caused, and it’s thrown off your aim.
That said, you were very close to the mark. Red eyes, previously distant and emotionless, are now alight with terror and locked on you. The structure of the wire bird melts into string. You reach for another Black Key, but suddenly your head throbs again and you see double. As you try to focus again, the girl calls out to her Servant.
“Shielder, take me away!” she shrieks, panicked.
>>
With no need to fear a fatal cut to his back, Shielder turns completely around during his fight with Saber and pounces back to his Master. In a single motion, he picks her up and begins leaping away. He’s over the police barrier and out of sight in no time at all. Saber, still in a frenzy, looks like she’s about to follow now that her slashes have halted.
“Saber, don’t!” you order somewhere between a grunt and a shout, one hand on your head now from the pain. It’s going to take more than a second or two to shake this one off.
Hearing your words, Saber freezes, but her murderous fervor takes a moment to recede. After a few seconds, your Servant’s breathing steadies and the wild look drains from her face. She blinks as awareness returns to her, as though she’s just awoken from a daydream. Once Saber realizes that you’re struggling to hold yourself up, she rushes to your side.
“Master! I sincerely apologize, I did not realize that I was about to abandon you! Can you stand?”
Your Servant places your arm around her shoulders. In a little while, you’ll be able to walk on your own, but it’s going to be a long trek back to school. You have no doubt that you’ll fall asleep right away once you’re in bed.
~~~

It’s a battlefield again. This time, however, you ride above it. Your horse’s thundering hooves grant you an insurmountable mobility advantage over your enemies. Try as they might, they cannot escape. Bow in hand, you shoot down a first, a second, a third…

~~~
You’ve already eaten, but lunch break isn’t quite over yet. This small period of free time provides a good opportunity for you to have a discussion with Rider in a secluded garden area.
“We need time to consider,” Rider states simply. Nobody can deny that you held up your end of the bargain last night. However, you demonstrated a willingness to kill a hostile Master. Rider is probably concerned for the safety of her own should your relationship sour. “In the meantime, a truce. We will not act against you, and you will not act against us.”
So she feels there’s enough trust for a stable truce, but not quite enough for an alliance. It’s clear you’re going to need to work harder if you want full cooperation. You agree to Rider’s condition and she vanishes.
Afternoon classes have limited productivity as everyone looks forward to the impending weekend. You’re going to have an awful lot of free time for the next two days. Deciding how to spend it will be important. As you leave school, you begin to ponder your options, but Saber’s voice cuts into your thoughts.
>>
Master, may I make a request of you? Well, this is rare.
Go for it, you reply.
Would it be possible to acquire inconspicuous clothing that I might wear in my physical form? If we do, I believe I would be far more helpful to you as it would make my Riding skill available for your use outside of battle.
You have to admit, it’s a good idea. As it stands, you haven’t been able to reach the less wealthy neighborhood south of the city to investigate it for Masters or mysterious events. If Saber could drive you there somehow, it should be possible to get there and back to school at night.
Good plan, Saber. I’ll see what I can do, but I can’t make any promises. There are two pretty big hurdles I’ll have to overcome in order to make that happen.
Thank you for your consideration, Master.
First, the clothes. You aren’t exactly rich, and a school uniform is likely to draw police attention if Saber is driving anything but a car, and perhaps even then. Since Saber has no license, you should avoid getting pulled over. A school uniform in Saber’s size would be easy to procure given your connections within the school, and Saber looks young enough to pass for a student. A full outfit beyond that, though, is probably beyond your ability to pay for. Saber would likely wear an ugly or cheap outfit if you ordered her to, but given her focus on propriety, she’ll want to look at least decent when out and about. To get her one, you’ll either need to make some money or get financial assistance from someone.
Second is a vehicle. A bicycle would be easiest for you to get your hands on, but there’s no way for both you and Saber to ride one that wouldn’t bring in more stares than you need as a Master. A car would be helpful, but also bulky. Finding a parking space could prove challenging depending on where you go, especially if you want to hide it so an enemy Master doesn’t find it when you’re out somewhere. You think that a motorcycle would be ideal, but you’ll need to both find one you can use and dress Saber appropriately to make use of it.
Speculating about future possibilities is great, but you need to do something with the present, too. Nightfall isn't for quite some time.
>>Go see your mother. It’s been a while.
>>Pay a visit to Father McManus and see if he needs help with anything.
>>See Sister Gloria to get a school uniform for Saber. You don’t have a vehicle yet, but at least Saber won’t have to hide all the time.
Perhaps this is an opportune time to see Father McManus. Occasionally, he needs help with odd jobs, and if the task is big enough there might be some money in it for you. You make your way to the administrative building at the top of the hill.
You push open the wooden door to Father McManus’s office. It’s less spartan than your lodgings, with furniture made of quality wood in matching colors. There’s no metal in the exterior of either the filing cabinets or the desk. The name plate facing you from his desktop reads ‘FR. BLAKE MCMANUS’. The chair that the exorcist sits in is the same kind as the rolling office chair in your room. The heavy door thuds shut behind you, providing a great amount of much-needed auditory isolation from the rest of the building.
“Ah, Eddy! Good to see ye.” Father McManus tries his best to feign calm, but he’s never been a very good actor. “Damien tells me ye’ve met someone.”
You should have seen this coming as soon as soon as you let Damien believe you’d had a lovely tryst. It was useful at the time since it meant that he wouldn’t be arranging dates for you anytime soon, but that convenience came with a price. There aren’t many people who Damien tells about your affairs with women, but Father McManus, ever concerned for your safety and moral character, has been in the loop for a long time now. There’s no surprise that Father McManus would get wind of Charlotte. You can only imagine how he reacted when he saw the picture of a pretty stranger glued to your arm.
>>
“What’s her name, lad?”
“Charlotte,” you reply.
Father McManus stares at you blankly. A few moments pass in silence.
“Charlotte WHAT, ye horny fookin’ toad?!” Father McManus’ shouts as he erupts from his chair, gesticulating wildly. “Don’t tell me ye didn’t even get ‘er fookin’ NAME?!”
Uh oh. You learned several years ago - from Father McManus himself - that, in Ireland, ‘feck’ gets used a lot because it’s technically not profanity. That honor belongs to ‘fook’, which is just ‘fuck’ with an Irish accent. Naturally, since Father is using ‘fook’ here, he’s cursing.
And that means he’s pissed.
“Not twenty-four fookin’ hours after I reminded ye of the danger, a tramp struts over to ye, ye let ‘er grab yer arm, ye spend the whole damn night with ‘er and ye show up half-dead at the infirmary with yer Od drained! And ye were fookin’ PROUD of it after! Have I taught ye nothing, boy?!”
“Father, I-”
“Stuff yer guff, Eddy! Ye were fookin’ reckless, and ye could have been killed!”
Father’s diatribe stings. He and Damien have worked hand-in-hand at times to try to find you a good partner. Now, you’ve finally found a girl whose company you actually enjoyed, and here he is excoriating you for it. But the more you think about it, he may be right. As much fun as you had with Charlotte, your encounter with her put you in a lot of danger. It was your idea to tag along, but you taking on Archer was her suggestion, to begin with, and she initiated the kiss to steal your magical energy at the night’s end.
Father McManus sighs, some of the fight draining from him.
“Alright, lad, tell ye what. Ye steer clear of this ‘Charlotte’ floozy and whatever she’s plotting to use ye for. In time, I’ll find ye a girl just as pretty with a stronger character who won’t endanger yer life. Deal?”
>>Accept the offer. Enthralling as Charlotte is, Father is right about the danger she poses to you. You may as well revert to your previous, arranged love life.
>>Reject the offer and double down on Charlotte. Father McManus has no right to decide who you spend your time with.
>>
“I’ll take my focus away from Charlotte, but I’m going to have to turn down your deal,” you say with a hint of frustration. You can’t accept a return to the same status quo that led you to spend a night with a complete stranger in the first place. “I appreciate that you and Damien want me to find someone worthwhile, but I don’t want a partner if the choice isn’t mine. You two need to understand that.”
“Alright, lad,” Father McManus exhales, perhaps feeling a bit defeated. “We only want the best for ye, but maybe we’ve gone too far. I’ll let Damien know that we’re to butt out.”
Father takes a deep breath and relaxes.
“So, Eddy, what did ye come here for in the first place?”
“I was wondering if you had any work that needs to be done.”
“In that case, yer in luck,” Father says. “There are a few boxes that need to be filed properly. I don’t have time to do it myself, so I’ll leave it to ye.”
Father leads you down into the file storage area of the basement. Often referred to as ‘the stacks’, it requires attention frequently as it’s where physical documents are held until needed or discarded. Father McManus points you to the boxes that need sorting and you get to work. The job is tedious, but it’s not hard. There are worse ways to make money. Saber, however, seems to believe that you deserve better than this drudgery.
Surely, Master, this job is below your station? You can’t help but feel that her opinion of your ‘station’ is inflated. You’re her Master, certainly, but not many people know that, and you have a life to lead outside of that role.
Not really. I’m just a student. Besides, if I want to get you clothes, I need money.
Similar exchanges occur several times throughout your tenure in the basement. After a few hours of repetitive filing, Father McManus returns to the basement and hands you a take-out box from the refectory topped with a bit of cash. The reward is unbelievably handsome, definitely more than you should have been paid for the work you put in. You suppose he feels guilty about ripping you a new one earlier and his unsolicited matchmaking.
You return to your room with the box so you can eat and change your clothes. The sun sets as you sit down to your luxurious meal of the same aggressively mediocre hamburger and fries you had a couple of nights ago, except this time it’s cold. Fancy.
It’s starting to become a routine for you to choose your nighttime activities at dinner. What will you do tonight?
Lacking a surefire way to advance yourself in the War tonight, you decide to scout a place you haven’t been to yet. The suburbs will be your target. It’s a broad stretch of land, so you’ll need to head out soon if you want to cover a decent amount of ground. You hastily finish eating and change.
~~~

The sky is cloudless tonight. Although you’re not in the city proper, not many stars are visible over the neighborhood as a result of light pollution from the urban area. The suburbs themselves are a vast collection of homes divided into multiple smaller neighborhoods. Separating the residential subdivisions are small parks, consisting of open grass in some parts and densely wooded areas in others. They’re tiny compared to the state park, of course, but each one is at least the size of a suburban block.

You spend two hours wandering amongst the brick, vinyl, stucco, and stone without Saber picking up the presence of another Servant. It’s disappointing, but your search has also been even less guided than your trip downtown. Traces of Servant activity, should they exist, would probably be found amongst the sections of thick trees where visibility to the public is lowest. However, searching through those trunks aimlessly would be just as useless as meandering through the streets.

Master, Saber calls to your mind with the message you’ve been waiting to hear, I am detecting an enemy Servant!

Show me the way! you command. You start running, and Saber gives you directions. The Servant, according to Saber, does not move despite your approach. Perhaps the target is already in what they consider to be a suitable arena? Your Servant’s course leads you into one of the boundary woods. There’s no visible path into the trees where you enter. After a minute of fighting through the underbrush, you reach an opening among the plant life. Branches provide a ceiling to the area; only tiny glimpses of the night sky peek out through the leaves above. In the center of the small clearing, amongst dead leaves and dirt, lies a deer carcass.
>>
On the other side of the corpse stands the one you came to find. His skin is fair, but his hair is black and bristling. The clothes he wears are of a similar darkness, with black pants, black boots, and a long black shirt that covers part of his hands. All are snug enough to show off his muscles. In his right hand is a spear, as sable as his clothing from tip to butt. The monochrome is broken only by his purple eyes. It seems to you as though the purple is… shifting, somehow.

Saber materializes in front of you, sword drawn.

“Hold it, kid.” The Servant raises his free hand to halt you and your Servant. “I’m not here to fight.”

“Then what are you here for?” you ask. If he has a spear and is sane enough to talk, he must be Lancer. You glance around the vegetation, but can’t see any sign of a Master.

“Investigation. That,” Lancer says, using his weapon to point to the body, “is a very bad sign.”

Whatever he’s referencing isn’t visible from your side. You can only see the deceased creature’s back.

“I think you should take a look.” The Servant takes a few steps back, allowing you access to the opposite face of the carcass. “‘Course, if you disagree, you could always attack me instead and get yourselves killed.” His grip on his lance is firm, and his eyes are locked onto Saber.

>>Go around and investigate the body. Lancer's concern is intriguing.

Good point, every Irishman we've seen in Fate is dressed like they stepped out of G Gundam (pic very related). But Irish mythology is so full of one-off, absurdly powerful people that if this isn't the protagonist of a story, it'll take a long time to find.
>>
“I’m not about to expose myself to you, Lancer. But clearly, you think something is amiss; what is it?” If it is a trap, you won’t be falling for it. Lancer, for his part, looks at you quizzically.

“Coulda just walked around with your Servant, but alright.” Lancer begins using his spear to indicate parts of the deer you’re unable to see as he speaks. “I doubt you’re a hunter, so I’ll explain this mess. The kill isn’t in the open, and the neck, belly, and meatier parts of the legs have been pretty much hollowed out. That rules out a wolf - or ‘coyotes’ are what you have in this country, right? Body’s not that old either, maybe a day, so just one dog couldn’t have eaten this much. Canines also aren’t strong enough to move their kill to a secluded place like this.”

“The consumption isn’t nearly as complete as it should be, either,” Lancer continues. “Scraps of flesh remain, dropped like crumbs on the ground just outside the holes. It’s like the meat was physically removed from the kill before ingestion.” He lowers his weapon and makes eye contact with you. “My guess? The predator is humanoid. Killed the deer, took it here for some privacy, and dug out the meat with human hands to bring it to the mouth. No tracks either, for some reason. I shouldn’t need to explain why that spells trouble.”

You remain silent, unable to form a response as your mind races. You’re not too familiar with wild animals, it’s true, so you’d never have noticed everything Lancer did. Further, his conclusion is a disturbing one. A humanoid killer? Could it be a Servant? A Master? Bloodsucker? Rogue mage? Possession victim? And with an appetite for flesh this ravenous, what happens if there aren’t any deer available?

“I see you’re worried too. The general populace is at risk. Whoever did this needs to be put down before it gets out of hand. I’m headed out; keep an eye out for the perpetrator.”

“Wait!” Saber calls out just before the Servant departs. “If you are so concerned about civilians, then why do you not suggest we work together?” Given her attitude towards potential allies thus far, you doubt Saber actually wants to cooperate with Lancer. Instead, she’s challenging his motives, perhaps believing Lancer himself to be the mystery hunter.

“We can cover more ground if we split up. Besides, I trust you about as much as you trust me. And I hate backstabbers.” Lancer vanishes without a trace.
>>
The threat now gone, you circle around the carrion to confirm Lancer’s story. Sure enough, it’s a grisly sight matching his description. You search for any further clue as to the identity of the killer, but Lancer wasn’t kidding when he said he couldn’t find prints. Your investigation reveals only disturbances in the leaves and dirt where the diner presumably sat for the meal. The situation is frustrating and the time is now quite late - you’re not thinking very well. To continue scouring the sprawling suburbs for evidence of a single, day-old animal kill would certainly lead to disappointment. You decide to return to your room for the night; you have a lot to think about.

The morning sun streams through your window as you awaken. As usual, Saber is nowhere in sight, but you’re sure she’s there. You’ve gotten used to dressing in the morning despite the presence of a girl in your room, having long since decided she probably wasn’t looking at you in the process. Although, if your positions were reversed, you’d be tempted to peek every changing session despite your upbringing and strong sense of morality. Could you really remain steadfast despite your will being tested twice or thrice daily? You clothe yourself more hastily at the thought, and you turn your mind to the morning’s activities. It’s the weekend now, and school does not occupy its usual chunk of your day. What will you do this morning?

Kirei was a priest, and had a blood-related child. Apparently the church in the nasuverse allows its clergy to have children. Do you know Edgar isn't blood related?

>Visit your mother. It’s been a while.

>>3727941
Kirei wasn't exactly a law-abiding executor
>>
>>3727941
>>3727942
It's important to note that Executors and priests are not the same. Kirei is only an Executor, thus Rin's references to him as a "fake priest". It might seem strange, but consider that women can be Executors too whereas only men can be priests in the Catholic Church. Because Executors are not priests, they are not bound by the same restrictions such as the vow of celibacy that priests take. There's no regulation against Executors getting married or having kids.

Risei Kotomine is a strange case, since he is a priest and still has a blood-related child. I don't recall any mention of Risei being officially married, though, and it's not unheard of for priests to father kids, though the degree of Risei's involvement in Kirei's life is certainly strange. In the real world, it's my understanding that the Catholic Church tries to cover up incidents where priests father children and doesn't usually dismiss priests for the transgression.
>>
>>3727993
And Edgar's mother is also an executor. So, there still doesn't seem to be any reason he can't be her biological child.

It’s been several days since you last saw Mom. As the overseer, she’s probably spending most of her time in the church on campus. You make the brief trek out the door of the residence hall and through the sacristy into the chancel. It doesn’t take more than a second to find your mother sitting in the front pew with a laptop on her knees. An open box of donuts rests beside her. She notices you mid-bite. A few sprinkles drop into her lap as she tears off the piece in her mouth.

“Mmm!” Her call is muffled as she beckons to you with the half-eaten pastry. She spends the next few seconds hastily chewing and swallowing what she’s bitten off while you walk over. “Edgar, good morning! Take a seat. Have a couple donuts. They’re good today.” She closes the laptop and puts it aside with her free hand. She’s either gotten over her despair at your entry into the War or is hiding it excellently.

You sit down on the other side of the box and take a donut. It’s a mystery how Mom managed to get a fresh dozen onto school grounds this early in the morning, but she’s done it so many times before that it’s not a surprise anymore. She likes to refer to it as her ‘ultimate technique’ and has promised to teach you once you’re old enough. Famished, you take a large bite of your donut. Looks like this will be your breakfast today; you’ll probably have two or three before you’re done.

“You’re not alone, are you?” your mother asks while eating. “Where’s your Servant?”

Saber appears several feet in front of your mother, standing as formally as ever.

“I am here. I apologize,” your Servant says, bowing slightly before returning to an upright stance, “I did not intend to act rudely.”

“Hmm…” Mom examines the young woman for a moment. “I didn’t get a good look at you before, but you’re quite a cutie, aren’t you? So, have you been keeping my son safe?”

“Yes,” Saber replies. “Thus far, I have done all in my power to preserve his life.”
>>
“That’s good to hear. I’m glad you’re doing your job. Have you been getting any sort of compensation for your work?” Her hand reaches over, grabs your shoulder, and playfully shakes you. Only now do you see the smirk on her face. “Maybe the chance to sleep with a soft, warm Eddy bear at night?”

Saber’s eyes widen with surprise and a muffled squeak escapes her throat despite her closed lips. Her face begins to flush, but she doesn’t break her stance. In fact, her stiffness becomes exaggerated to the point of awkwardness.

“Mom!” you interject with all the authority of an embarrassed child. While it might seem like you’re trying to protect Saber from the teasing, you’re more alarmed by Mom’s use of that old nickname. Your mother cackles.

“I still haven’t forgiven her for sneaking up on me. She’s just gonna have to get used to this!”

It seems she intends to pay your Servant back with interest for thinking about killing her when they first met. Saber takes time to recover from her unexpectedly severe response to a simple tease.

“Anyway,” your mother turns to you, “how about you? How have you been faring in the War?”

It’s safe to say you’ll be offering a recap on your efforts thus far. However, you’d like to make a point of talking to Mom about…

It’s worth dedicating some time to the deer carcass and its mysterious killer. Lancer’s assessment worries you greatly - whoever did it, they’re inhumanly strong, exceptionally stealthy, and utterly voracious. It’s probably only a matter of time before the culprit starts devouring regular people. You won’t start with the mystery, though; getting right down to business would deprive you of this conversation with your mother.

“Well, the first night, I went over all my weapons and Saber’s abilities,” you begin. “The next day, I raided Mr. Brigante’s belongings for the information he had on other Masters.”

“Intel first! That’s my boy,” Mom says, ruffling your hair. “I taught you well!”

“After that,” you continue, maneuvering away from her meddling fingers with effort, “I went downtown, ran into the Master of Assassin, and fought past Archer to reach the suburbs.” You decide not to linger on this topic, having promised Father McManus that you wouldn’t dwell on Charlotte.

“That was a real pain, you know,” your mother comments. “Do you have any idea how hard it is to cover up so much destruction on such short notice? I even had to issue a warning to Archer’s Master not to cause so much damage again!” Suddenly, her voice and countenance twist with rage. “And then you came back half dead because of those sordid rodents!” She slams a fist onto the pew, and the anger dissipates as quickly as it appeared. “Sorry about that. Keep going.”

“The next night featured a clash with the Einzbern Master. I almost stuck her through the throat, but Shielder practically concussed me with a spell, so my aim was just a few inches off. They managed to escape.”

“Eh, it happens. Try not to get hung up on your mistakes. Just be sure to do better next time.”

Now, for the main event. It’s time to alert the overseer of the danger lurking in the shadows.

“Last night didn’t have much action, but it revealed something very worrying. I encountered Lancer in the suburbs, who was examining the mostly-eaten corpse of a deer. He explained the evidence to me and suggested that the killer is humanoid. Whether Servant, bloodsucker, or something else entirely, I can’t say.”

“Where is it?” your mother asks, her tone now stern. You describe its location to the best of your ability. “What else can you tell me about the body?”
>>
“Fleshy parts were consumed, anything protected by bones was untouched, and scraps were left on the ground,” you explain. “Based on what was eaten and the state the carcass was left in, I think it was devoured and abandoned in a hurry, either for fear of being caught or sheer hunger.” You surprise yourself by drawing a conclusion on the spot beyond what Lancer had told you. “Lancer seemed to think the body was moved to where we found it, which would make the killer very strong. Despite that, neither Lancer nor I could find any footprints. Whatever we’re dealing with, it’s unbelievably stealthy. It’s clearly not a normal human, and I doubt its diet is restricted to venison. I can’t be certain that this is connected to the Holy Grail War, but it's a danger to the public regardless.”

“You’re right not to take a chance,” Mom commends you. “I’ll get someone on it right away. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Sorry, but now that you’ve given me business to take care of, I need to start working. Thanks a lot for coming to see me!”

You stand, leaving behind the near empty box of donuts as your mother resumes operation of her laptop. This is probably all you can manage in the hopes of tracking down the hunter until another carcass turns up. In the meantime, the morning is almost over, and you need a way to spend the next few hours.

Leaving the church behind, you return to your room for some privacy. You’d like to talk to Saber for a bit to discuss recent developments. You twirl around the office chair to face the window as a seat for your conversational partner. The bed beneath the glass becomes your throne.

“Saber, could you materialize?” you ask. “I’d like to speak with you.”

Your Servant appears before the chair you prepared for her, but unsurprisingly, she doesn’t sit, instead standing at attention.

“Of course, Master,” Saber replies calmly. “What do you wish to discuss?”

“Do you think there’s more than one Einzbern?” It’s been nagging at the back of your mind since you encountered the girl, but you haven’t had the chance to think about it until now. The silver-haired girl that Damien wanted you to find was supposedly older than you are, but the girl you encountered was undeniably younger. Shielder’s taunt revealed another contradiction - he and his Master had caused the landslide in the state park two nights before you fought, which is the same night that Damien’s informant spotted the older girl in the suburbs. “Two silver-haired girls of different ages in different places at the same time… Are they acting as a team?”

“It is possible that there are two working independently of one another while still considering themselves to be allies,” Saber offers. “If both Servants are as powerful as Shielder, it would certainly be more effective to split up and cover more ground. Should they stick together, it would encourage the other Masters to form a coalition against them as the strongest enemy.” That’s a good point, but if it’s true, you have a problem. Now that you’ve tried and failed to kill one, the pair of them may hunt you down together.

“Speaking of Shielder, did you notice anything while fighting him? Anything that could help identify him?”

“Unfortunately, no,” Saber sounds a bit disappointed in herself. “Nothing beyond the fact that I could not wound him with my blade.”

It’s too bad that Saber has no information for you, but what little you’ve seen may be enough to go on. It’s quite clear that Shielder’s body itself, or at least his skin, serves as his shield. Then there’s the rune spell he used on you. Runes, as you well know, are a Northern European family of magecraft, meaning Shielder is probably Irish or Germanic. You rack your brain for any heroes who fit the criteria.

It's obviously Scathatch

>>
You scratch your head, reaching deep into your memories, and unearth stories from your childhood. Sister Gloria’s tales, abridged though they were for a child, paint Sigurd as a strong contender, with invulnerable skin and runes learned from a valkyrie. However, Shielder’s personality is inconsistent with what you imagine Sigurd’s would be. While he obeyed the orders of his Master, his attitude was lively. His casual tone and attempt to incite trash-talk suggest he was more concerned about enjoying the battle than winning it. Sigurd, having been raised in a court, would have better manners before a duel.

You dig deeper still. Father McManus loved to recount detailed fables from his homeland, like the construction of the Giant’s Causeway and the tragedy of Diarmuid and Gráinne’s love affair. Now that you’ve stopped to consider it, one particular favorite character of Father’s sticks out like a sore thumb. How could you have forgotten? The poster child for why women are not to be trusted and the foster-brother of the legendary Cú Chulainn; Ferdiad.

If Shielder really is Ferdiad, you have a huge problem on your hands. According to legend, Ferdiad’s skin cannot be pierced by any weapon, and he trained under the fearsome warrior woman Scáthach to be his best friend and fellow disciple’s equal in nearly all martial capacities. Even worse, when Ferdiad and Cú Chulainn face each other in mortal combat, Ferdiad very nearly wins - Cú Chulainn is only able to claim victory through the power of the Gáe Bolg. How on Earth can you defeat an indestructible man with the skill to best the Hound of Ulster?

“Let’s assume that Shielder’s skin is impenetrable,” you say to Saber. “Is there some way that you can beat him without your dangerous last resort?”

Saber lowers her gaze and does not speak. There’s something she’s not telling you. You suppose that’s to be expected; there’s an emotional rift between the two of you as superior and subordinate that, thus far, you’ve made no effort to close. If she’s worried about something other than your safety, she’s unlikely to open up about it. You remain silent for a few moments to find the right words.

“Saber,” you say at last, “you’ve been doing a great job as my Servant, but you never say anything unless it’s related to the war. I see you as more than just a weapon. It’s okay to talk to me; I’m willing to listen if you have concerns.” More silence.

“Master…” When Saber finally speaks, her voice has regained the uncharacteristic timidity of two nights prior. “When I am in battle, do… do you find me… unsightly?”

“On the contrary,” you say, a bit embarrassed to admit it, “I think that’s when you’re at your most beautiful.” You wouldn’t lie about anything, let alone this. Her darting movements, her rippling hair, her rhythmic snarling, her feral gaze… Somehow, the frenzy was alluring. You’ve never been exposed to that variety of beauty before, but you find it to be beautiful all the same.

“What!?” Saber’s widened eyes snap up to yours as her face begins to burn red.

“I said,” you say with more conviction this time, “I found your display of wild grace to be captivating.” You doubt that most people would find equal splendor in Saber’s battle fever, but public opinion has never been a sound measure of quality.

“Then you would not be disgusted by my Noble Phantasm?” Saber both sounds and looks equal parts embarrassed, surprised, and hopeful. You didn’t expect to receive such a question, though; she already told you about her Noble Phantasm, and it doesn’t sound particularly repulsive.

“Why would a flaming tornado disgust me?” you ask. Saber hesitates again before speaking and looks away, ashamed.

“My… My Noble Phantasm is not… a tornado of fire, per se. The flames are merely a quality bestowed upon it by my nature as a Servant, granting it the outward appearance of a burning whirlwind. The reality of the power, and its aftermath, are…” Saber’s attentive stance breaks somewhat as she shrinks in humiliation, fists clenched in nervous tension. Her face is turned so far down and away from yours that her eyes are now completely hidden by her long hair. “...grotesque, as its core is the twisting rather than the blaze.”

For as dedicated as Saber is to her Servant role, she’s been astonishingly reserved about the true nature of her abilities. But it seems you’ve begun to earn her confidence, even if only a little bit.

“Your Noble Phantasm will not disgust me, nor will I loathe you for your powers,” you reassure her. “I swear it.”

“Truly...?” Saber’s head rotates just enough for one of her scarlet eyes to catch sight of you.

“Don’t you remember why I’m fighting this war?” You feel a soft grin form on your lips. Saber should know by now that your word can be trusted.

“...Very well.” After taking a moment to collect herself, Saber suddenly snaps back to attention and bows almost ninety degrees, her face once again hidden from your eyes. Your Servant’s movement is swift, but in the brief moment she stands upright you are able to glimpse her smile. “I rededicate myself to your service, Master.” Without another word, Saber fades from view.

You turn around on your bed and look out the window over one of the school’s gardens. It’s the afternoon now, and between the shade of a few surrounding trees and the one cast by your residence hall, it’s become a perfectly pleasant spot for couples to spend a weekend afternoon. It’s not too densely populated; freedom to leave campus on weekend days draws most lovestruck teens off school grounds. Romantic partners will keep each other company until evening, but you require a different pastime.

Sorry, but no update tonight, folks. I'll try to push out two for tomorrow, but no promises.

You should acquire a school uniform for Saber. It’s the most convenient way to allow Saber to join you in public. You may not have a vehicle yet, but procuring the uniform now will let you make use of a car as soon as you have access to one. Saber will also hopefully appreciate the ability to stretch her physical legs outside of battle. It will also be possible to enlist her aid in various tasks without fearing a passerby spotting your Servant in her full Japanese armor. And, well… you’d be lying if you said you weren’t curious as to how Saber will look.

A brief trek to the other side of the hilltop brings you to where Sister Gloria lives. Somehow, she’s been granted a small house to live in by herself. You suspect it’s related to her status as an Executor currently feigning life as a conventual. You’re sworn to play along with the charade in public, though you’ve never understood its necessity. While Agrippa Brigante was to live in a curious one-story, one-room shack with a basement, Sister Gloria occupies a humble but comparatively lavish two-story structure. Not many have, but you’ve spent a good deal of time inside; the building has served as your place of occult learning for the past few years.

You climb the wooden stairs of the porch and knock on the door. Gloria keeps a stockpile of spare uniform articles in case the need for some arises. All you need to do is ask her for a favor. The entrance swings open, revealing the home’s sole inhabitant. A woman your height with short brown hair and blue eyes happily greets you wearing the habit of a nun, though as usual, she’s not wearing a headdress.

“Edgar, hello!” she says. “What can I help you with?”

“Can I come in?” you reply. Since it has to do with the Holy Grail War, you’d rather not talk about it in the open.

“Certainly!” She allows you inside. The foyer is narrow to maximize space in the other rooms of the petite residence. White plaster walls and a hardwood floor are disrupted by a staircase to the second floor to the side. She leads you through a doorway in the opposite wall to her living room and offers you a seat on one end of the couch before taking her own place on the other. “So, what do you need?”

“I… need to get my hands on a spare girl’s uniform,” you say slowly, avoiding eye contact. Obviously, Sister Gloria will hesitate to hand girl’s uniforms over to male students on request. This is going to be awkward to explain.

“Is this for your Servant?” Gloria asks immediately, prompting you to look at her in surprise. “Oh, don’t worry. Emilia already told me about everything.” You’re not sure Mom is supposed to divulge that sort of information to anyone, but Gloria is her best friend and comrade-in-arms. If telling Gloria were against the rules, your mother would just reinterpret or simply rewrite relevant regulations.
>>
“Saber, it’s okay,” you begin your order. You’re very surprised by Gloria’s understanding, but you know you can trust her the same way you would Mom. “Come on out.”

Your Servant appears by the armrest, ever upright. Sister Gloria stands up to examine Saber, circling like a shark. She focuses on Saber’s head and hair, since Saber’s figure remains concealed by armor.

“Oh my, aren’t you a darling! Let’s take your measurements upstairs and I’ll get you outfitted appropriately.” Saber bows silently and Sister Gloria leads her out of the room. Before disappearing from sight, the Executor turns to you with a smile and a wink. “No peeking, alright?”

“Of course,” you reply. That wink, though playful, was also a promise. If you try to climb the stairs during this process, you will suddenly find yourself able to empathize with Brigante’s special package. You hear wooden creaks as the women climb the steps. You’ve no choice but to wait until they are finished.

>>Stay put and wait not-so-patiently. You can’t peek, but you’re going to see Saber’s uniform the second she comes down those stairs.

There isn’t much else for you to do until Saber and Sister Gloria return. In the meantime, you figure you may as well entertain yourself by having a look around Sister Gloria’s place. Given who she is, there’s bound to be something interesting tucked away in one of the usual hiding places.

You know the house like the back of your hand. Gloria doesn’t keep anything of import in the living room just in case someone gets curious like you are now. You pass through the door behind the couch that leads into the kitchen. Few hiding spots are in this room, but all possible locations are worth investigating. You pat the highest shelves of the cupboards, where the surfaces can’t be seen even while standing. It’s an unconventional spot, but if Gloria has sensitive material she wants to read while eating, it’ll be here. Unfortunately, you can’t feel anything hidden under the glasses.

It’s certain that you will find an entertaining paper or two in the study. The kitchen has four doorways; one to the living room, one to the foyer, one to the basement directly under the staircase and one more to the study. Only the last two entrances are outfitted with proper doors. The office itself is small and has no windows, equipped with several bookshelves and a desk. If nothing pops up here, you’ll head to the basement to see if Sister Gloria has any new toys.

You open the top drawer of the desk, remove its contents, and pop out the false bottom. While Gloria’s methods of concealment are low-tech, they only need to prevent normal people from stumbling upon her secrets. As a place where members of the Church gather, the academy is very safe from outside attack. Within the hidden compartment is a folder, which you promptly remove and flip open. You recognize the style and formatting of the type - it’s one of Agrippa Brigante’s intel files! Gloria must have gotten to them before you! But why did she take this one?

The documents concern a local man named Alceste Lucroy. He appears to be a figure of great interest to Brigante, as this file is by far the most detailed of the four you’ve read. The Lucroy family is of French origin, but their magical ability began to decline some time ago and they emigrated in a desperate bid to reverse the process. No such luck - they’ve been floundering while living under the Marshall family’s jurisdiction for decades now. Given his weak magical lineage, Alceste has developed a preference for rituals and traps that do not require quick, powerful bursts of magical energy and can instead be built or powered over a period of time. His home is a relatively isolated structure in the suburbs, but due to his specialties, the entire property is something of a deathtrap. Most interesting is a page towards the end. It warns that the Lucroy family is notorious for stealing from other magi families, but the details have been heavily redacted.
>>
Thumping interrupts your reading as two people descend the stairs. You hastily return the drawer to its previous state and leave the study as you found it, moving to the entrance hall to greet them. When you round the corner, though, your Servant is nowhere to be found. Only Sister Gloria awaits, with a look of mild surprise.

“Oh dear, Saber is self-conscious! That’s a shame. She looks so good in uniform, too,” Gloria says to your disappointment. “I’d ask you to stay for dinner, but I don’t have enough food for two tonight.” You excuse yourself, and Sister Gloria sees you out the door with a smile and a wave. “Don’t snoop without permission next time, okay?” Another wink, and the door closes before you can respond. It seems her security improved without your knowledge.

Sunset paints the gardens gold as your growling stomach propels you to the refectory. You ponder your plan for tonight as much as what you want to eat.

The western half of town is as quiet as you expected. Your patrol is a silent walk through darkened streets, unmolested by Archer’s prying eyes and piercing arrows. Saber remains invisible as she follows you. A few hours have passed, and your Servant has yet to reveal her uniform-clad self. It’s unfortunate, but you’re sure you’ll see her in due time.

Master, I am detecting the presence of two Servants, Saber alerts you. I believe they are currently fighting. How should we proceed?

Lead the way, you order. This is very fortunate for you - if they’re already in combat, then you can take advantage of the situation to eliminate the greater threat. After several nights with no success, you might even get two kills at once! You just hope the ones fighting are your enemies rather than those you’ve been trying to get along with.

You take off, turning right and left street after street as Saber directs you towards the fighting. As you draw near, the clamor of battle swells. Clashing noises are interspersed with a deep, inhuman roaring. What living creature could make that sound?

The tumult is loud enough now that the battle must be around the next corner. Carefully, you peek around the edge of the building to survey the battlefield.

Down the road, the back of Shielder faces you as the Servant takes blows from a long, two-handed battleaxe. The man wielding it is even larger than his opponent. The unknown Servant wears a coat of mail and a helmet reminiscent of a Norseman in the Viking Age. Whenever his mouth opens, a resounding bellow erupts from within. Would that make this Berserker?

“grooooOOOOOOOOOOOOoooohh!”

Each swing of the war axe is deflected by a strike from Shielder’s forearms. Any attempt Shielder makes to close the gap is evaded or repelled with a dexterity unbecoming of a man so large. Neither fighter shows any sign of exhaustion. For now, it’s a stalemate.

There’s no way the combatants haven’t noticed Saber, but neither can afford to acknowledge your presence without exposing himself to his opponent. Try as you might, you can’t find any sign of either Master. You have plenty of freedom to make your move.

>>Order Saber to attack Berserker! Kill the mad dog before it runs wild!

I'm wondering about that too. Theoretically, Berserker and Shielder could both be fighting all out and we wouldn't be able to tell if they are actually trying to kill each other or not because Shielder is just so damn durable.

You can’t see them now, but it’s likely that they’re hidden in positions from which they can still observe the fighting. With the help of a nearby dumpster, you manage to leap high enough to pull yourself over the edge of the building serving as your cover. The rooftops would make for excellent vantage points.

That said, you can’t see anyone from your elevated position. You jump from the first rooftop to a second adjacent structure and then a third, Saber in tow, but there’s still no sign of an enemy Master. Have they broken into stores? It would provide the most cover, certainly, but it’s a significant complication to your role. How are you going to track them down if they’re carefully concealed indoors?

You don’t ponder for long. The battle between Berserker and Shielder has rotated from when you found it, and Shielder has begun to retreat towards your position. Berserker surges forward into the space Shielder leaves without a second thought. Shielder is going to lead him right into the building! You flee to avoid getting caught in the crossfire, but from the corner of your eye you see Shielder leap to the roof - aiming for you.

Suddenly, your arm is gripped with incredible strength and you’re hurled from the establishment by Saber, who has materialized to intercept Shielder. You land gracelessly in an alleyway only to hear a roar followed by a thunderous boom and rumbling. It’s now clear why anyone would want to remain out of sight - Shielder can use himself as bait to direct Berserker’s destruction wherever he pleases!

Fleeing isn’t enough. You need to hide, too, or Shielder will just follow you with Berserker. While the Servants are occupied with each other, you dart through two more alleys and kick in the back door of a building. Closing the entrance behind you and pinning it shut with a nearby crate, you survey your surroundings. It’s dark, but you’re in a storage room, with shelves and boxes forming a series of rows. Berserker’s deep groans and the collisions of blades are muffled, but still audible.

Find a place where you can see the battle from cover becomes your priority. If you just take a look at the name of the business once this is done, you can ask Mom to cover up your trespassing tomorrow, so you’re not concerned about moving deeper into the construction.

You circle to the door to the rest of the establishment on the other side of the back room. You’re about to grab the doorknob when Shielder smashes through the wall beside you, clenching your throat in a death grip and pinning you against a shelf. You can barely breathe, let alone use a Command Spell to bring Saber to your aid. A floating stone, its magical purpose fulfilled, clatters to the floor at your feet.

“Your girlfriend can't protect you because she's fooling around with another man. Tough break, kid.”

His free fist rams into your chest, shattering your ribs and driving the fragments into your heart. Over his shoulder, you see a wire bird through the hole in the wall. It has no eyes, but you can feel its stare all the same. In the distance, your Servant's feral scream announces your passing to the stars.

DEAD END

Good job, lads.
>>
Fucking knew it.
Why would you engage when we know one opponent is nigh unbeatable and we don't know anything about the other?
>>

But, muh Masters!
>>
>>3747418
Anons are fucking dumb.
Even if we found an enemy Master, at this stage of the war we'd only die when they decide to use their command spell.

“Death by destruction of the heart… I don’t know if that puts you a step below me, or somewhere above.”

The priest is smirking about something strange this time.

“But that does not concern you, does it? You are here to learn from your experience. This is only your second visit, so I will again explain your error in detail.”

You nod. It’s become hard to see a way out of this predicament.

“The first flaw in your approach is the enemy Masters. Berserker’s Master is currently well-hidden. Further, Shielder’s Master is not the type to repeat her mistakes. She will avoid you unless she can be certain of her safety.”

That makes sense. You almost succeeded in killing her - why would she offer you another opportunity?

“The second is your assumption about the battle. While Shielder himself may be fond of single combat, his Master seeks only a swift kill and cares not about the etiquette of duels. Berserker is simply insane. You thought you could remain on the sidelines, but these two will gladly drag you into the melee. Allowing that to occur on Shielder's terms is tantamount to suicide. If you wish to survive, either leave before you are targeted or leap into the fray of your own volition. But enough about that. Check your cross, boy.”

You pull your amulet out of your shirt and find it unchanged save for the addition of four metal beads now piled on the string.

“Those beads will only appear while you are here. They are the proof that you have died. You receive two per visit, it seems. If you gather enough, something interesting might happen. So come see me once in a while.”

Though curious, you’re not in any rush to get killed again. That shit hurts.

“Oh, one last warning for a neophyte: there is a certain circumstance at play that makes attacking Berserker right now exceptionally dangerous. Choose wisely.”

I should let you all know that updates will be sporadic for the next two weeks. I'll do my best, but I'll only be able to get them out sometimes, if at all. If I go silent, know that I haven't dropped the quest.

I wonder if using command spell would allow Saber's NP to down the Shielder
At worst we will get another bad end or waste one
At best we will remove two servants at once
>>

Maybe we could send Saber in to harass Shielder while trying to avoid getting in Berserker's way. Having her release her NP might help us to test the limits of just how powerful Shielder's protection really is, but there are some downsides to that too. Not only would we be revealing one of Saber's trump cards, if I remember correctly it might send her into some sort of blood frenzy, which could make her slip up in a three way deathmatch. We could have a command spell prepared to bamf her out of the fight if things are going poorly, or if someone or something tries to go for Edgar while he's unprotected.

Of course, running away would probably be the safest option.

I want to stick around and observe in the hope Shielder shows us why Berzerker is dangerous right now but the Einzburn has a familiar scouting the area and we don't know what is up with the other master. It also feels cowardly running just cause our first attempt failed. Wish our boy knew some practical magic.

What...?

Familiars, magic barriers, etc. According to the first thread he can only do basic bitch ice crap like ice blades and ice walls.

Since it'll be a while I'd like to ask the thread a question. Should we focus on improving Edgar's skills and our relationship with Saber and Rider/Rider's master instead of going on patrol an engaging with the other masters and servants?

As it stands our servant is sub-par due to her own hangups and Eddy doesn't have the skills to make up for it. I'd put him as above Shinji/early Shirou/Waver but he's a little below average as far as normal masters tend to be. We need to get some more martial lesson and figure out his magic potential.
>>
>>3749256
We just need to tell Saber that we will accept her even when she turns into incarnation of murder and bloodshed so she can turn into her alter version and start wrecking shit
I think we could pull off Jesus impression required for that, especially with how Edgar likes his girls
>>
>>3749256
>he's a little below average as far as normal masters tend to be
Don't undersell an Executor-in-training. Edgar's only subpar in comparison to a Servant; the average Master would die pretty quickly without any protection -- the Einzbern girl got spooked and ran despite being a superior magus.
>We need to get some more martial lesson and figure out his magic potential.
Despite everything I said, yes.
>>
>>3749302
She seems like a very physical girl and will need more than some words to give her that push. A physical showing is probably needed.
>>3749421
>without any protection
That's the problem. Any magus involved in other wars, barring those I mentioned plus Bluebeard's murderboi, are set and ready and it is likely the same here.

The Einzburn girl seemed weak admittedly but she also seemed to not be taking this seriously, which has lead me to a few theories that are too unfounded for me to discuss them yet. She has since wised up though.

Yes if we get the jump on somebody outside of their base of power and without them being ready for a fight right then and there we would likely win due to our amulet and nothing more, but that requires more luck than we are likely to get. We are punching our way up and can't expect things to start falling in our favour.
>>
>>3749542
>A physical showing
So we need to take charge and hold her hand?

At the bare minimum.

Rereading the first thread I gotta say you are actually right. Edgar does decent against Brigante and if he can do that well against a trained and experienced Executor then it's only the combat focused masters we need to worry about 1v1. Still I don't like our odds against any magus who has had even a little setup time.
