Previous threads: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?tags=One%20Piece%20Bounty%20Photographer%20Quest
MC Pastebin: https://pastebin.com/XGUgpV79

Cover-art kindly provided by our noble artiste, Draw-anon, who generously took time off repainting the Sistine Chapel for us. Look upon our prettyboy protagonist. Look upon his devilish smile and despair.

In last thread’s episode of Breaking the Law Quest, our beloved, apron-wearing hero, Commander Flashman, manages to cast Horrible Thoughts into the mind of the dread pirate Traffic Lawless M.D., who suspects him of a DARK and TERRIBLE secret regarding his origins. Then, because Flashy is weirdly open with people, suspects him of a SLIGHTLY LESS DARK but SLIGHTLY MORE TERRIBLE secret regarding his origins. Afterwards, Flashy bakes the most perfect cupcakes possible, finds out VERY DARK and INCREDIBLY TERRIBLE secrets regarding the Sabaody slave market, and somehow manages to scrape a win in a duel against Doctor Death Dude. Also, Fireplace Abs undergoes surgery to have his jobbing gland removed. But is this the last we’ve heard of it...?

We now return you to your scheduled idiocy.
>>
>oniichwaaaaaaan i have a queeeeeestion

You don’t even bother to clean your blades. You don’t sheathe them either, but lower them instead, preferring to get to the heart of the matter. Ha. Heart. Heart Pirates.

Right.

“My question,” you bluntly say. “What is your connection to the man you think is my father?”

Lawless... doesn’t freeze exactly. He’s mostly still, and blank-faced, and his emotions taste like bitter ash, but he draws a strip of black cloth from his coat pocket at starts running it efficiently down his nodachi’s length, wiping your blood from it.

He doesn’t speak for a little while, and you’re impatient, but - it’s probably better not to piss off the guy who could fob you off with a shorter-than-necessary answer, right?

“That man was a Marine, who saved my life when I was a child,” he says, voice bored as he carefully watches the blood disappear from the blade.

You beam, relaxing. “So he was a good man. That’s good to know.”

Lawless looks up at that, gaze focusing on you. “He was an idiot.”

“Well. I mean, if he IS my father, that’s kind of to be expected...?”

“I can’t dispute that,” Lawless blandly admits, sheathing his giant-ass sword and shoving the cloth back into his pocket. “Well, if that’s all, I believe I’ve held up my end of the deal...?”

“Yup! All good here!” You pause. “Though I'd appreciate it if you didn't spread the whole ‘Armament’ thing around much, trying not to get transferred.”

Lawless arches an eyebrow, as he hefts the sword over his shoulder again. Seriously, dude, there’s big swords and there’s overcompensating. And you’ve got Sir Lance-a-lot.

“You’re quite terrible at keeping secrets, aren’t you, Mister Flashman. It almost makes me wonder how long before your little job here becomes known.” He smiles, almost politely, and walks past you without an ounce of apparent care.

... He could at least give you something for your cuts. Jerk.

Ignoring Lawless’ ‘look at me, I’m a badass’ saunter out (he didn’t even win!) you give your cuts a quick poke.

Oooowwwwwww.

... Yeah, okay, you need these sorted. Swords first, though! It doesn’t take much to find some cleaning materials in the training room, and a quick clean and check shows your cute little blades are good as new.

Then you head off to the medbay to steal some bandages.

Fortunately, nothing’s in a place that’s awkwa4 to reach, and the cuts are all reasonably shallow, or at least haven’t cut anything major - they’e still bleeding, if sluggishly, but it’s easy to clean them and wrap the bandages around.

You suspect you may not have got off so lightly if Lawless was serious, and pulled out his Fruit.

Settling down on a chair, you kick back and open the big book o’ bodies.

It’s... tough going. It might be common stuff, but it assumes you’ve already memorized a big ol’ list of what bones are where, and what organs assist with what stuff. Well, at least you could probably figure out how to set a limb or do CPR - although you suspect your most useful advice for something with a weird rash would be ‘go see a doctor’. Plus, sometimes it veers weirdly into reeeeeally simple shit like ‘citrus cures scurvy!’ or ‘if someone has a broken spine, don’t move them!’.

Helpful.

Eh, you know more than you did before, you guess.

(Cooking now split into Cooking and Baking. Cooking at +5. Baking at +23)

>82 + 5 = 87

Now you're in no danger of bleeding to death overnight, and have stuffed your poor, throbbing brain with Doctory Things, you amble off to the galley for want of anything better to do.

As it turns out, the cook (and his current assistant on rotation) are only too happy to have a little help, after having seen your baking and being reasonably assured you're not planning on poisoning anyone.

Your cooking isn't QUITE as spectacular as your baking, admittedly, but following instructions, you're an able assistant; between the three of you, the results are apparently both faster and better than normal, especially when you peek out at the dining pirates and confirm they're enjoying the food.

It isn't exactly a meringue tower or something, just some standard meat pies and vegetables... but each to their own, you guess.

(Cooking +5!)

You hand over the bag that night, when Doctor Awful Hand Tattoos drops by to collect them. You don't even consider admitting that you looked at them.

"You have my number for when you figure out whether you know my father or not," you instead say, polite, cheerful, professional. "It's been a pleasure doing business with you... aside from the electrocution, and the fire, and the sea-king, and the Big Mom pirate raid, and the gay porn. Have a good subpirate trip."

Lawless closes his eyes and sighs at word 'subpirate', taking the bag from you. "It's certainly been... something, Mister Flashman. Your culinary skills were appreciated, at least, and the spar was educational." He looks at you pointedly. "I'd recommend working on your Devil Fruit next."

You make your eyes nice and round, simpering up at him. "Aw, Lawless, you DO care~!"

"Go to bed."

'Yes, mom,' you refrain from saying, flashing him a standard Marine-salute instead, and closing the door in his face before he can bitchslap the smirk off your own.

You're just too adorable.

Night falls. Everyone die- no, that's rocks.

Right. Night falls, and you sleep right through, Marines eager to get off the pirate vessel, and Abs probably just thrilled to get access to fresh air. He apparently doesn't like being enclosed underwater, which you can understand.

Morning comes - and after a rushed breakfast, the subpirate docks a short while outside a civilian village, the better to not let people see Marines emerging from a known pirate vessel.

"Matchstick Village," Lawless informs you, as you and your guys hustle your way up to the outside world. "It's small, but there's a Marine base on the other side of the island, so you should be fine. You won't starve, anyway."

"Thanks for the cupcakes!" Bepo waves a (fluffy!) paw at you, almost shyly.

"You are the second least murderous pirate crew I have ever met," you inform the few pirates who've come to make sure you leave without blowing anything up. "God luck. Take care, Bepo! ... Hug?"

You hold your arms out invitingly and affect the Sad Face. Bepo, to Lawless' clear disgust, perks up a little and steps forward to give you a quick hug.before stepping back (and apologizing to Lawless for it. Oh, well.).

"Good riddance!" From behind the Doctor and bear pair, Barra shakes his fist at you. You smile and wave at him. With the wrong side of your hand. And only the middle finger up.

You're forced up and off the subpirate pretty quickly after that - it's only a ten minute walk to the village though, and Lawless firmly yanks down the hatch with a final flare at you, as your group stands on the beach.

"What a weird bunch of guys," you muse, as the subpirate sinks beneath the waves.

"Yes," Klaus intones, after a mouthful from his flask. "It's a good thing that we are all perfectly normal. Absolutely."

Hat tilts his head, raising a hand to it. "My sarcasm detector is blaring..."

"Enough messing!" You spin on your feet (kicking up sand) to face your minions (and Klaus, and Abs). "Let's get to the town! Then we'll call someone for a pick-up, and, uh... hand around until we get collected, I guess."

Klaus shrugs. "If worst comes to worst, we can always requisition a ship form the base."

Fireplace shudders slightly. "I don't want to spend any more time with Marines than necessary."

"... Abs, WE'RE Marines."

"And that honestly surprises me."

Matchstick Village, as Lawless said, is small. The Marine base is in a much large town, but this one is... twee, really. All bright and cheery. There's actually a couple of children skipping in the street.

You ignore Klaus' muttered grumble about vomiting in his mouth.

I'm assuming what you mean by that is "i left around when we blew up our ship", so I'll start from there.
>some big mom pirates showed up

>abs got fixed up, we flipped the fuck out over law(less)'s DF

While Klaus and your sweet and innocent (ahahahahahaha no) minions avail themselves of the pub downstairs, you and Fireplace decamp to one of the rented rooms.

Once again, Bogart picks up your call and puts you through to Garp, who's been one noticeably happier mood since his secret grandson was confirmed as being a proud owner of two attached arms.

Neglecting to mention such petty trifles as 'I electrocuted one of Trafalgar Law's men', or 'I peeked at the files, what's up with all this slavery stuff?', or 'I made fantastic cupcakes', you request a pick-up instead, and also mention the presence of the Big Mom pirates before Abs went kablooey on their piratical asses.

He doesn't seem thrilled by that last part, but hey, not your problem.

Oh, and you tell him the Heart vessel is called the Subpirate, which he seems weirdly amused by. Whatever.

Fireplace makes grabby-hands motions once you're done, and you hold Mr Speedy out to him. In the name of avoiding the awkwardness of him trying to pretend Garp isn't his family, you make your excuses (aka, being thirsty), and head downstairs.

You will become... Zap-Man. Flashman the Zap-Man. Perfect.

You think you've already got... a bit of a handle on using lightning with your hands, but actively shooting it out? You haven't tried that, not deliberately at least.

Lifting your hands carefully, you try to keep them solid while letting bolts of electricity shoot out.

(90 + 9 for dubs + 2 from previous Logia skill = 101. Success! GGnM: Lightning skill at D.5.)

You're a little startled by the speed and force with which the small bolts suddenly appear, crackling and lashing towards the ground, and - when you pull your hands back - the metal on you. At least they don't seem to be attracted to YOU, nor do they hurt.

Next up, you attempt to do what everyone keeps telling you to, and try to control yourself.

It's... okay?

You can sort of decide which area of your hand will produce the most bolts, and kind of aim a little easier when you really focus on it, but... they still happily try to jolt off-course to whatever they're naturally attracted to. Fine if you're actually pressing your hand against someone, not so good if they're at a distance and you don't want to electrocuted random metal objects nearby instead.

The next attempt goes better. You focus specifically on the aim, forcing the bolts to specific targets rather than 'wherever they want to go, and find it's easier if you already have a general aim in mind before you start hurling them out. They're harder to control when already created, but not by much, surprisingly.

You can't quite aim them at, say, particular stone, but you can get the bolts within a few inches around them, and you're getting better at aiming morenthan one at once. Aiming for multiple targets seems like it would be far harder, though.

When you hit C.0, which is the point where one can safely use it in a fight without risk of completely making things worse. Not far off now!

>59... you hit basic DC, I guess

Next up: p r e c i s i o n

Aka zapping shit with one big bolt. You try it, and... meh, it's okay. Forcing yourself to create only one bolt means it's larger than the previous one, and the loud CRACK makes you flinch, sending you completely off-target. The next one is a little better, and the next, although you still can't hit a precise point. You could target someone's chest, but not their heart - assuming the bolt didn't get pulled off-course by something along the way.

No. But electro-fingerguns are now a viable option, so who cares?

>1hundo

This is about the point where you give up and aim a finger-gun instead, because screw it, no-one's watching.

One bolt. One target. One Piece. No, not that last one.

You aim. You focus on pulling a faint buzz of potential from your flesh and turning it into electrcity, sending it from-

--BANG--

....... holy-crap

Finger still outstretched after the massive crack, you stare at the targeted rock. Or rather, where it was before you blasted it to smithereens. Sure, it wasn't big, but still! What the hell is with that aim?! It's a lot easier to focus from a finger than a random bit of your hand...

(Lightning now at C.1! Bonuses now apply. Lightning fingerguns can reasonably safely be used in combat at short range!)

With a shrug, you lift it up, and slowly press sparks of electricity into the metal ball of death.

It sucks in that electricity like Strawbrat sucks in meat. And then it heats up. And then, as you shriek in sheer, confused panic, it's out of your hands and HOLY CRAP YOU BARELY EVEN THREW THAT

The toppling trees as the cannonball heads out to sea don't really care about your horror. But then, if you scream in the woods and no-one's around to hear it, did you really nearly pee yourself?

(Lightning now at C.15! GGnM: Science skill at D.5!)

What the absolute hell was THAT.

It's a shotgun at the speed of a railgun, with random trajectories.
Even if you see them with observation haki, they're moving so fast that it's almost impossible to dodge.

>flashy uses shotgun

That's a damn good idea anon, rail-shotgun. The only question Is what do we call It, It's a special attack. Are we continuing with the 'game theme' that billiards seems to have?

Shotgun for short range, Billiards for mid-range and 'trap setups' where an opponent has to choose between tanking a billiards shot or taking a hit from us, and Railgun for any range, but particularly extreme range bullshit.

Oh yeah, It's all coming together.

>95 + 7 = 102 again

"... Whoah."

You stare at the long path carved through the shattered remains of tree trunks, and out to sea. Good thing you weren't facing inland.

The birds are still in loud, rushed flight, having taken off in a hurry once you unleashed your... weird cannonball attack thing, and you know what you have to do.

Try it again!

One more cannonball - you have three more on you - and you lift it, aiming carefully out to sea again, the first one having fallen and sunk into the ocean, and...

You aim for the same path and direction as the first one, so no more trees are smashed through, but the loud CRACK and the speed and force of the cannonball are the same. Eventually, as you watch, it falls as a small for innth e distance, curving as it slows and hits the water.

Electric cannonballs are kind of badass. And MUCH faster than normal.

(Lightning at C.3! Science at D.55! Can safely and successfully electrify projectiles and railgun them without issue.)

>>
>>3695692
>>3695699
Yeah, we definitely need to practice with disposable weapons before we use our own.
In theory we should be able to accelerate pistol-chan's shots without issue so long as our power doesn't go out of control, since we're applying the force to the bullet directly which shouldn't put any pressure on her barrel. If it got out of control though, it could begin to apply force to pistol-chan as well, which is bad for a number of reasons.

As for our swords, it would be very easy to overheat their blades, especially if we were applying the charge directly to their cutting edge. That would result in ruining their temper, or even melting the edge. The temper could be fixed, but melting the edge wouldn't be good.
That doesn't matter so much for things like the meteor hammer, which could have some seriously awesome chain-lightning effects applied to it.
Likewise, i'm sure the heat lance could take a fuckton of power without any real issue, potentially creating a jet of high-temperature plasma that could cut through metal like butter.

I doubt that this small village has any complex science/medical books.
>>
prob should have asked law for some basic med books regarding nervous system
>>
>>3695724
well yeah i mean next time we are in a big city or something like it
>>
>>3695720
So in short, for using the railgun with pistol-chan, we have to be careful not to use too much power so she doesn't explode or fly out of our hands.

For our swords, we need either good control or to only use the lightning-edge in short bursts so we don't overheat them.

For brute-force weapons like cannonballs, the meteor hammer and the heat lance, we can just go all-out without worrying about it.
>>
>>3695735
I think Enel could melt and reshape his staff right? We might be able to do something similar.

>Random Marine Ship run by captain McWho, he's kind of a laid back weirdo
>Time passes on the way back, pass some island
>OH SHIT IT'S A DISTRESS SIGNAL, PIRATES!
>We're the closest responding ship men, we have to defend this place from pirate scum!
>Idiot Squad, ASSEMBLE
>CHAAAAAAAAAARGE
>[Insert weird complications to the scenario here]
>>
>89 + 7 = 96

Then, because you're a reckless idiot, you decide to electrocute yourself.

That is to say that nerves send, uh, electrical... pulse... things, right? Right. So if you can control those electrical-thingies, you could maybe... speed yourself up? Like with the cannonball?

That makes sense. You think. Admittedly, you're not a metal ball, but still.

You should proooobably not electrocuted your brain just yet though, just in case.

Flexing an arm, you try to imagine those little electric signals that naturally run through it. Then you try to run more electricity through them.

In a fraction of a second, your arm violently spasms, from finger to shoulder, and no further only because you forcefully prevent the electrical... charge?... from travelling further.

Owwwwww.

Scowling at your still-twitching, but thankfully painless arm, you move your fingers - everything works fine. Good. Okay, not quite right.

This time, you have a better idea of the feeling of how electricity is MEANT to run through you - less of it this time, and you move your arm as well, swinging a punch through the air.

It's... maybe a little faster than normal? Your arm feels a bit more more hot than it should be, too, though not burning or painful.

(Lightning increased to C.35! GGnM: Logia skill at D.7! Three DF skills are GGnM: Logia, GGnM: Lightning and GGnM: Science.)

That was definitely tiring; all this precision work is actually more exhausting than just brute-strengthing lightning bolts around.

>>
I just realized how pointless shocking ourselves to move faster is. We can literally turn into lightning. Even if we want a reflex boost we have already have observation haki.

Kizaru isn't really that fast. he the fastest in a straight line cause light logia but it not like he can actually fight like Lee or Gai in lightspeed. His range attacks and his kicks/punch move at the speed of light (not with mass of course otherwise he be kicking you harder than a nuclear explosion.)

With Lightning logia, we can move AND fight as fast as lightning. Especially if we just skip the whole delay process between the nervous system thanks to being a lightning man.
>>
>>3696511
the shocking ourselves bit is to have all those buffs without having to go full or even partial lightning, we still pretending to have a paramecia so being able to do this matters, also it still works as training for our GGnM skills so really it lacks a downside
>>
>>3697111
Trips confirm we're goddamn broken.

So what should we focus on training gents? Should we go even further with refining our fruit to where we can safely add It to our arsenal, or should we keep on the haki/sword train a bit longer to solidify Armament more?

I personally want to FINALLY add Billiards to our attack list, especially with LIGHTNINGU BULLETSU on the table In the near future. It's a good attack, It's a very One Piece attack. Let's use It.

You cough. "So if someone, not me, has gained Armament Haki, not me, how would they go about training it better? Asking for a friend who isn't me."

Doctor Lighthouse lets out the longest, lowest sigh you've ever heard, and damn if you haven't caused more than a few. Then he grumbles something about 'sprouts', but you don't think he's talking about anything medical.

Then he answers.

Honestly, it sounds like a load of ~mystic woo~ but... you can't really see a man of SCIENCE dicking you around like that. Plus, Observation seems kind of insane too, really.

So you listen as he explains how to make Armament 'flow', using it to create armor or imbue weaponry, or just plain augment yourself. He sticks to the basics, because there's no point in the advanced stuff right now, but you feel like you'll have a better idea of what to do now.

"You... you tried to electrocute yourself?" He sounds strangely bewildered.

"Only my nervous system!"

This time, he just groans. "Don't DO that, you idiot! You're lucky you didn't give yourself a stroke!"

"Okay, but... I think it's possible?"

Doctor Lighthouse clicks his tongue over the line, frustrated. "I'd suggest getting some Armament lessons from your 'friend' first, and run both at once. But seeing as they might be a while off... how much human biology do you know?"

"Uh. Blood should be kept inside the body?"

Mr Speedy rolls his cute little eyes. "Yeah, thought so. Do some reading on it - especially the nervous system and the brain - and some reading on electricity as well. Don't try it until you're done with both of those, and then start with a finger or something, not a whole limb."

Sounds slow. And boring. Plus, you're not even sure if you CAN be hurt by the electricity - Abs can't be burned by his own fire, right? Buuuut you're not gonna admit it's really a Logia and that your body isn't entirely human anymore.

Okay.

Here goes... everything.

"The slave market there - does it really abide by the laws? It's just criminals they sell as slaves there, right? No-one else?" Maybe you sound a little desperate by the end. Or a lot. You kind of hope he's going to say something like 'I never saw anything illegal there!', but...

Silence.

Then. "I won't insult you with a lie or a deflection." His voice is harsh and blunt. "The World Nobles take anyone they want, anyone they find interesting or attractive. And the slavers have their protection to take anyone they think they can make a profit on, who won't have people kicking up a fuss. Criminals, non-humans, beautiful women, those with rare or wanted skills or odd physical traits... it doesn't really matter. It's public knowledge there, and anyone who tries to stop it gets a bullet or a slave collar."

Your mouth goes suddenly, weirdly dry, as your heart stops working for a second and then slams back to life ten times louder and faster. Okay. This is. Not good.

"I need to go rethink a lot of stuff, thanks for being straight with me," you blurt out, half-panicked, all-rushed, and not even slightly mentally-present.

You don't- you can't- you don't really want to accept that... that what he's said is true, but... he doesn't have a reason to lie. And those papers...

Maybe if you didn't already know that the Government was... not even close to perfect, then...

Your mind is a thousand blurred, spiralling thoughts, repeating in restrained panic.

"Understandable," you hear Doctor Lighthouse say, a rock of calm in your ocean of internal screaming. "They don't exactly make it public knowledge; most Marines who aren't in that area or aren't above Commodore don't know it, or don't believe it. I'd recommend you don't go talking about it though, for your own health."

You swallow, nod, then remember to speak. "Yeah. Okay. Thanks."

"And tell your 'friend' good luck with their Armament."

"Aaaaabsolutely..."

You say your goodbyes and hang up, staring down at Mr Speedy, whose tiny eyestalks gaze back up at you, wide and curious.

>>
>>3700801
If your body is fully lightning, it's fine. If partial lightning or especially if you're trying to force more electrical signals through your nervous system, it could screw up your brain because your brain won't recognise potential rewiring as 'damage'. It's like how Abs can heat up his hand without damaging himself (without actually turning it into fire). Making your skin hot just has far less long-term consequences than sending random electrical jolts to your brain.
>>
>79, 37, 78

You join the group rapidly losing sobriety downstairs, with a desire to race far ahead of them. "Is this is a personal duel to drunkenness, or can anyone join in?"

Hat stares at you with bleary eyes. "I will be... victorious."

"That's a 'feel free to join in', says And, who seems suspiciously sober. "Last one standing gets 50 beri!"

That's... not much. Although it's probably the principal that counts. Either way, you slot yourself in, and start instructing the unfortunate bartender on how mix a Pink Flamingo.

Two hours later, as night starts to fall, the pub resounds to the drunken cheers of most of the pub, as the not-yet-collapsed drinkers down yet another pint of their choice. As for you, you glare at your cocktail, and wonder why the hell you're barely even feeling a buzz.

Abs is also looking between your own drink and your face with clear suspicion. Considering he's the only other competitor who isn't at least swaying, that makes sense.

"I think he's onto you," Klaus mutters. He's been looking relieved ever since he realized he wasn't going to have to be the designated babysitter for three drunk Marines and a drunk Shichibukai.

"Onto-? I haven't done anything!"

Your sword-tutor winks at you with obvious delight. "Uh-huh. Of course you haven't."

"It's true!"

Your never cheat at a drinking competition! Well, not for 50 beri, anyway, that's just pathetic.

Disappointing, I was hoping to see you stabbed in the eye and flailing for your first meeting with Miseagull.

>87

You chug that heavenly sweetness down like it's... well, like it's a Pink Flamingo. You are a drinking master. An elite. A black belt in cocktail-fu.

Fireplace-And-Abs stares back, raising his tankard, and downs his own drink like the inferior alcohol that it is. Rum? Beer? Who even cares. It's obviously trash.

The bright umbrella rolls to the side of the glass as your mighty battle continues. Sparks (thankfully not literal) fly between your alcoholic struggle. This is beyond the understanding of petty mortals. Destiny rests on this very result.

"You... y'look like id'yuts..." Sunglasses blathers, squinting bloodshot eyes between the pair of you, his namesake askew.

With your free hand, you make a helpful suggestion regarding where he can place his opinion.

And then the door opens, and Seasus-damned Mibird the Shichibukai walks in like this is some kind of Shichibukai convention, the more conscious drinkers' noticing him with obvious bewilderment.

The bird... is unimportant. A nothing. You vaguely see him walk to the bar behind Abs, but your concentration is - naturally - focused on the matter of true importance.

The glass is drained. Abs' tankard is emptied. The two hit the table, as both of you keep your glares locked. No victor yet. It will come.

"Is that...?" Klaus stares at Mibird's (admittedly stylish) back. Un. Im. Portant.

"Another round," you tell Abs.

"Another," he confirms.

"Ha! We'll see. BAR LADY! MORE BOOZE!"

You preen at the compliment to your incredible drinking skills. Damn, you're awesome.

Mibird's gaze drags back over the table - including your cocktail glass with accompanying umbrella - before a nervous waitress approaches to quickly serve your ordered drinks and flee. Then it passes on up to Klaus' swords (he keeps his mouth shut, body tense) for a brief few seconds, before moving on to your own. They slide even faster off yours.

He doesn't glance at Hat or Sunglasses' daos, though whether that's due to their infantry uniforms or the fact they're both passed out, you have no idea.

Then - he gives an almost laconic shrug, as if dismissing everything, before raising his tankard to his lips and turning away. From this close... seeeeeeeasus, that sword must be seven feet tall. And black?

"Whatever I CAN learn," you bluntly state, tilting your chin to fix him with your own glare of sheer stubbornness. "I need to better myself so I can stay ahead of my rival.I owe him that much. He wants to be the world's best swordsman, so I’ll have to learn to be even better than that to beat him."

Mibird seems singularly unaffected. You're not actually sure if he HAS emotions. "To be a better swordsman than one who surpasses me, would mean becoming the world's greatest yourself. You have no interest in that?"

Mibird... has an odd flicker of something his eyes now. He turns once more and takes a step closer, gaze piercing. "Roronoa Zoro. That's your rival?"

"Yeah. He's the one."

The yellow eyes narrow, mouth straight. "That boy couldn't hold on to his sword. To lose Wado Ichimonji... does not speak well of him."

He trails off; then lifts his tankard and finishes his drink in one long, fast mouthful that leaves you wide-eyed, before clinking the empty tankard down on the table, one corner of his mouth curving sharply into what might be a small smirk. "Come outside, boy. I'll teach you a lesson."

To be fair, she does think you've been brain-fuxxored by pirates and that you'll come to your senses after some time away from them. But yes, what she did was Very Not Cool.

Because Loguetown and Alabasta happened so differently, she didn't get a chance to see the Strawhats as decent people, and instead knows them as mostly typical pirates, and Zolo as the guy who held you hostage in Loguetown. Not great introductions to them.

>time to die

Perking up, you almost vibrate from the sheer, unmitigated glee. "This is everything my dreams AND nightmares are made of!"

Mibird makes only a vague noise of acknowledgment - he's already halfway to the door, his badass stride makin' his badass coat flow next to his badass sword.

You might pass out.

"This is gonna be amazing," you whisper.

"Yeeeeah, no," says Abs, sounding weirdly serious.

Klaus leans in close, body tense and teeth practically gritted. "Prettyboy. You realize you can't back out now? And that 'teaching you a lesson' isn't going to be a pleasant experience? Yes?"

You scowl. "I get that! But like I said... I need to get better. And he's the best." You glance at him, his badly-concealed worry, and reach up to poke his hand lightly. "As a swordsman, you've never thought about it?"

"I think about 'not dying' a lot. That's my personal ambition. Not getting killed doing dumbass shit on a whim."

"Squeak," Rodent agrees, tiny head poking out of Klaus' pocket, until he shoves the little rat back in.

"He probably won't kill a Commander," Abs suggests, though he doesn't sound certain. "At the very least, he shouldn't consider you enough of a threat to use Armament on. So if you see something coming that you can't deal with, use your Logia and get out of the way."

"That's meant to be a secret," you point out. Abs and Klaus stare at you, the guy who turned into a giant cloud of lightning so you could electrocute a Big Mom pirate. "... Okay, yeah, I suck at secrets. Big whoop."

"Should probably get a move on before he gets bored and pissed off," Fireplace sighs, before starting to drain his own drink.

Klaus winces. "Yeah, let's keep him in as good a mood as possible."

And so you find yourself out in the street, with Klaus - and surprisingly, Abs - at your back, following Mibird as he leads you outside the village.

Hopefully this doesn't mean he's concerned about knocking down buildings. He wouldn't. Not in a spar. Right?

... You're gonna die.

"Prepare yourself," Mibird says, stance casual, as Abs and Klaus back away from the immediate area chosen.

Unsheathing Ka-tan and Cut-chan, you grin. "I have to say: Thanks again for this! I'll have plenty to learn from this."

Mibird merely lifts a hand to his neck, and - unsheathes a tiny blade from his necklace. "Plenty to learn... perhaps you should concentrate on depth, rather than quantity."

You pull a face, at his words rather than the dagger. It's not like that massive blade wouldn't be more than overkill on you. "You sound just like him." Zolo's waaaay too focused on making people concentrate entirely on swords. Weirdo.

"He also said he'd never lose again until me," Mibird drawls. "Pay attention to deeds, not words, boy."

"Then quit talking, and let's spar!"

For an instant, you think you see a spark of something dark and eager in those yellow eyes. "But of course."

"Nothin' personnel, kid," Mibird says, appearing behind you with his kata- no, that's not what happens.

It might as well, though.

(Observation Haki +1! DC now 45!)

You charge forwards, Observation Haki flaring to feel panic-worry-concern-hope from your audience and boredom-disdain-confidence from Mibird, who stands with casual aplomb.

His tiny dagger (ehehehe) is held loosely, in what could barely be called a grip, as you hurtle forwards, ready to dodge, Ka-tan and Cut-chan rising as you watch with your Haki, waiting for him to react - you Observe the tiny blade angle itself to where your blades will slash at him, and you alter their course immediately so as to-

DAGGERS

DAGGERS EVERYWHERE

You flinch-stumble back, swords jerking mechnically up to block the small blade that hasn't even moved, despite the sudden flurry of ten- no, a hundred-thousand paths of it, some movements small, others slashing or stabbing down at you, at where your swords would be, at -

Your head is killing you, and your heart is apparently trying to do the same.

"Wh-what was--?" You stare up at Mibird with panicked-rabbit eyes, hands trying not to shake.

"Observation?" Mibird doesn't even move, except for a faint smirk of his lips, tone bored. "From past experience, I would assume you tried to react to my first move, and then had the unfortunate result of having to see a good number of the potential responses I considered. Understand this - as the world's greatest swordsman, I have a great many more choices in a fight than weakling like you... whose only choice is to *lose*."

And then, while you're still processing that, his grip on the loosely-held dagger tightens properly.

Remember, WINNING IS IMPOSSIBLE. Your aim is (I would assume) to learn something and earn his respect. You might succeed better at these by failing at a DC in one rather than succeeding at a DC in another.

With your Observation vanished and your head feeling like it's already been stabbed through, you don't feel Mibird coming - but you see the faint blur-flash as he moves, and while it doesn't allow you to be precise, it gives you enough warning to lift Cut-chan and swing her across to try and bat aside where the approaching blade should be; and Ka-tan twists out, aiming for where his stomach should -

Both miss, swinging pointlessly through thin air. He didn't bother letting you see him move for that. Just gone.

The knife bites deep.

The tiny dagger pierces into your skin and through, and all you can think is: No.

No.

You've come this far and - he's not even - and Smoboss - and -

N O.

(Armament +1, DC now 92!)
(???? +1, DC now &*@#$/!)

The knife stills to an immediate halt as you feel the flow of black Armament slam through your chest, but something else is there too - not in your chest, but a roiling, sparking eruption of sheer defiance that burns your veins flesh thoughts soul

The world screams like it's hurt, somewhere beyond human senses, recoiling from you.

The dagger remains still, tip buried in your chest, only a few drops of blood staining the white cloth above it. And Hawk-Eyes' namesakes sit in front of you, focused on yours, like lifeless, polished amber. Face just a few inches from yours, motionless. Like a bird watching its prey. Watching YOU.

You've never felt more exhausted in your life, trying not to sway on your feet, the dagger merely a faint sting in your doubtlessly blackened flesh.

You see, this precedence has quite history behind it. Around 15 years ago certain marine fought pirate in a duel. Pirate disarmed marine and seriously stabbed him leaving sword in the wound. Thinking he won he walk away while marine took the sword and attacked pirate from behind killing him. As the weapon was of the higher quality then standard issue marine decided to keep it. This took him to court. Judge ruled that marine deserve the weapons as it was inside him therefore it was part of him and thats means its his. That create precedence where marines would lay claim on weapons that would create even smallest of cuts. To fix it, ruling was changed that it needs to be at least 5 seconds to lay a claim to a weapon

>ur my teeny stabby now

You stare him dead in the eyes, which isn't hard. They're right THERE, after all.

"If a blade stays inside me for longer than five seconds, I'm legally allowed to keep it," you tell him.

Mibird very, very slowly closes his eyes and then opens them, in what could perhaps generously be called a blink.

You kind of wish your Observation was able to activate so you could tell what the hell he's thinking.

Then - he straightens and steps back, which OWWWW yanks the damn knife out of you, THANKS, ASSHOLE.

"I think not," he drawls, and then briskly wipes the reddened blade on your coat. Like a dick. Suuuuuch a dick. And you're bleeding even more, now. Great. Thanks.

Scowling up at him, your hands adjust their grip on your swords. "Are we still sparring?"

"No. You were terrible."

That honestly hurts worse than your head or chest. "Sorry to waste your time."

"You were less terrible than I expected you to be," he corrects. The dagger is sheathed, returned to his neck. "But more so than I hoped for."

... Still ouch.

"Did you learn anything?" He sounds barely interested.

You think back on your - no, it wasn't even a spar. Just a cat, playing with a mouse.

You take a deep breath. Serious Flashy time. "Observation used against a highly superior foe can be a hindrance, I need to commit to either attack or defense until I'm good enough to be able to split my attention like that against a superior opponent," you decide aloud, thoughts racing. "I need to keep my will up to date if I'm going to continue being a lovable dumbass, and challenging you to a spar was simultaneously monumentally stupid and the right decision."

There's a clap from somewhere around Abs and Klaus that you recognize as the sound of palm hitting face.

"Acceptable," says Mibird, after a moment's silence. Then, "Your name?"

"Flashman. Harry Flashman, given name first." He's probably met a few people with names in that order, though it's hardly common.

"Commander Harry Flashman." He at least doesn't sound so bored now. 'And what is your aim?"

So BP. When can we expect opinions on flashy from the hat crew n shit
>>
>>3705515
You actually didn't do too badly! You showed you had some talent with swords, Observation, Armament AND now Conqueror's. Mibird doesn't expect a rookie like Zoro to deal with kind of crap. Then you gave a decent summation of what you learned, rather than messing around, and are announcing an actual aim rather than 'lol i dunno'. So he's kind of relaxed over the whole 'my potential successor got his directionless arse kicked by some random Marine' thing.

>>3705552
Pretty sure we transferred to the combat department or something after arguing with Smoboss? Or something like that, there might have been some issue with the higher ups not wanting to lose their photographer...
>>
>>3705568
No, we got special permission to fight.
We're still photography.

Apparently we're the pride of the photography division for both doing our actual job and racking up a mountain of kills on top of it.
A legend of the battlefield. A weapon to surpass pluton.
>>
>>3705568
nope, we tried to transfer but they didnt have anyone that could take over and we had done too good a job while in loguetown, so HQ decided we were allowed to enter combat but were still registered as a non-combatant, at least till they can train someone up to be a photographer, prob by sending them to us for us to teach them how to use the equipment and the process involved
>>
>>3705568
We attempted to transfer but they said no. They compromised after Smoboss got involved to have us as a photographer that's allowed to be involved in combat. So we are still in a non combat roll, at least on paper.

uproot the corruption and....oh god. The real truth is that the corruption goes all the way to the top. I'm sure I've said that a couple of times now. Meh, Admirals can't actually do shit. What's important is being able to do the right thing, help people, right wrongs, and then being strong enough to keep us and ours safe in the aftermath of that when we inevitably make very strong enemies.

Whoah, three tallies, thanks for that. And looks like it definitely wasn't as close as I thought, either.

>i have a dreeeeeam

You open your mouth, and - what IS your aim? You kind of want to test apart all this bullshit corruption that stains the Marines, the Government, the world, but... it's still too raw, right now. Seeing those papers. You need to think about it.

"I want to be strong enough to be able to do the right thing and protect my family," you decide. Because it doesn't matter what you need or want to do about it in the end - you're going to have to make yourself stronger first. And you need that strength to protect the people (and weapons) you love. Two birds, one stone. Right?

"Strength," Mibird muses, "is a common goal. But the reasoning is good enough, for now, even if your skills fall short." He eyes you again, that permanently-intense gaze running over you from top to bottom. "Have you heard of the Grand Line Annual Swordsmanship Tournament?"

What? Yeah, you've seen it mentioned in the papers. Kind of a big deal. "Uh, yeah? It's on Sabaody, right?"

"Correct." And then his lips pull back in a vicious smirk, eyes glittering. "As the winner of the Renaisse Duelling Tournament, you have automatic entry. In three months time, I expect to see you there. If you disappoint me in the results... I won't be so gentle again."

Sure, but he and Shanks have history, an Shanks has strength to back up the annoyingness. Flashy is clearly a Haki prodigy with a lot of potential and some skill, but he doesn't know about your Devil Fruit (and wouldn't care about it anyway) and your skill is nowhere near his or Shanks' level.

You've won his interest and a chance, anyway.

You hear Klaus groan a long 'noooooooo', even as Mibird pauses to look back at you. "Of course. The night is yet young."

"That's a really vampire thing to say," you inform him. "But oh boy, do I have a drink to introduce you to..."

And ten minutes later, you're back at your old table, except with fewer minions, Hat and Sunglasses having been carried back and tossed onto their beds, and an extra Shichibukai instead.

He's insisted on red wine rather than trykng a Pink Flamingo, probably for the full vampire aesthetic. You're simultaneously disgusted and impressed. Meanwhile, Klaus and Abs look like they want to be anywhere but here.

You mean forwards over your cocktail, as Mibird sips elegantly at.the thick, red liquid formed from the blood... of grapes.

Uuuuuuuuuggghhhhhh, Klaus is the worst. You think about reminding him he isn't your mother, but a warning glare from him suggests he's a little short on patience and self-control tonight. You've probably lopped a couple of years off his lifespan.

"An excellent milliner in the New World," Mibird drawls anyway, eyes delicately closed as he drinks. How long does it take him to shave like that? It's all so... sharp.
