In a time of global conflict, the elite international task force Overwatch was formed. Soldiers, scientists, adventurers, and oddities: together, they ended the Omnic Crisis and restored peace to a war-torn world. For a generation, the heroes of Overwatch protected the world, inspiring an era of exploration, innovation, and discovery.

After many years, Overwatch became troubled, and was finally disbanded by official U.N. order. Soon world conflict and terror rose again. Governments weakened by strife ceded power to mega-corporations. Militaries were replaced by private security forces. Some omnics returned to war with humanity; others remained peaceful, but faced fear and violence from humans affected by the war. The global crime syndicate Talon, in the absence of their perpetual rivals, rose to vast wealth and power, pushing entire nations into chaos.

You are a young man who's been many things: adventurer, treasure hunter, freedom fighter, and international criminal. But before all that, you dreamed of helping defend the world with Overwatch. When you encountered Tracer on that fateful night and agreed to help her rebuild, you didn't quite realize what you were getting yourself into. Since then you have travelled the globe, recruiting former agents and newcomers to the cause, and doing what you can to protect the citizens of Earth from the forces of chaos, oppression, and war. Although most people don't realize it yet, Overwatch has returned. But against Talon, Anubis, and the allied megacorps, is one small team of vigilantes really enough?

The world needs heroes, and you're trying to be one of them.

Hello, readers. It's been a while.

As the official lore for Overwatch became more jumbled and softened its edges, many of us felt our fervour wane for the setting, feeling that it had slowly lost what drew us to it in the first place. I had the same feeling myself, and with it came a lack of desire to write an ongoing long-form fanfic for a world I no longer had the same love for.

But this is our story, not theirs. Seeker is our MC. And we deserve to have our story finished.

I had so many things planned for the remainder of OWQ that writing it all out in the usual manner would be too much for me, so this will be a sort of whirlwind tour of the remainder of the story. My aim is to get through most of what I had in store within (2?) threads. Hopefully this will provide a satisfying ending to those who have stayed with me for this long.

Before we start I want to thank each and every one of you for reading. Whether you're a voter, a lurker, or a waifu shill. Whether you merely drop in when the mood strikes you, or you've tirelessly scoured every thread of the archives. I salute you. Without you there's no quest. I'm grateful for all of you.

Now let's get this show on the road. It's time to end Overwatch.

It's about time I resumed this account of events in those days. Writing this journal wasn't my idea in the first place, but I've been told it may be considered important someday. And anyway, I'm almost done. I should finish what I started. It deserves an ending.

As I remember, when I left off describing my adventures back in 2081 during the "Return of Overwatch", the team was in a good spot. That is, good relative to being illegal vigilantes, pursued by both global law enforcement and terrorist networks; funded only by crowdsourcing and the occasional theft; and with no command structure, lead only by an upstart rookie (myself) and Athena the Godmind, the exact type of entity the original Overwatch had been formed to fight against.

Here's a record of my agent profile from those days. How young and foolish I was then. I'm no longer young, although many will tell you I'm still foolish. I can't disagree.

There were definitely problems. Not everything had gone as we'd planned. Our response teams had consistently foiled Talon's destructive terrorist attacks, but we had also come to realize these loud, bombastic terror plots were only a smokescreen to cover their true objectives, which seemed to revolve around two things: accumulating powerful advanced tech and creating a global coalition of crime syndicates. The megacorp consortium still controlled the governments of the world with an iron fist in a velvet glove, promising the people prosperity and change, while using, reprogramming, and discarding them as nothing more than another resource to be consumed. And the Godmind Anubis continued to reassemble his escaped code fragments outside of containment, which, if finished, would put him in position to take control of information networks worldwide.

Despite all this, there was hope. Overwatch's forces were bolstered with old veterans and new friends alike. The Watchpoint base in Gibraltar was still hidden from everyone except Talon, whose attacks against us had proved ineffective. And our swift responses to world catastrophes had preserved peace, political and ecological stability, and tens of thousands of civilian lives.

I don't know if we were saving the world, exactly. But at least we were stopping it from sliding into chaos any faster than it already was.

The work was, mostly, going like we'd hoped when we started all this. Many of us, including myself, were optimistic that the team was getting a handle on things, that the situation would only improve from here.

So of course, that's when it all came crashing down.

Before our enemies even had a chance to really get started on us, we faced conflict on the inside. Arguments erupted until the team was split between veterans and new recruits. The old hands, battle-scarred and seasoned, warned us against arrogance, fearing we'd suffer a worse fate than the first team. They wanted us to remain reactive and defensive, putting out fires where they flared up while keeping ourselves safe, hidden, and on the good side of the public. The young hotshots wanted to take a more proactive stance, to root out our enemies in their hiding places, to strike hard and fast, to put an end to the conflict and damn the consequences. Disagreements turned into frustration, and then into anger. Without a firm command structure, I had no way of simply ordering them to shut up and do their jobs. All I could do was try to convince them of what I thought best.

>I agreed with the veterans, and we remained cautious.

I took the side of the newer agents, the hotheads who wanted action and aggression, and argued alongside them that it was time for bold action, not cautious strategy. Our enemies were clearly bringing their plans to fruition, and it was no good to simply wait for them to gather their full power and reveal their plans of conquest. It was up to us to put a stop to it before it happened. We might have to take more risks to do it, but we'd been lucky so far. Mostly. And if one of us had to sacrifice ourselves to stop the world from falling into chaos, well, that's what we had signed up for in the first place.

The veterans needed some convincing. They had already put themselves and their families in enough danger by signing up in the first place. When Athena took my side and stated her calculations looked favorable, that was enough to sway those who weren't staunchly against listening to an AI, and our viewpoint gained a majority. From then on our teams took a more proactive stance, trying to stop problems before they started when we could, and being readier to take the offensive.

I'm not sure if it helped. But we did what we could.

The next major mission we set out on was our return to Japan, as we continued to investigate Talon's ties to worldwide criminal organizations. The remants of the enigmatic Shimada clan were our targets, and so of course the outlaw heirs of the clan, Genji and Hanzo, being the most familiar with their habits, joined our strike force. While I joined them to infiltrate a secret underground base below the city, searching for Talon's secrets, on the crowded neon-lit streets of Neo Tokyo our combat team of agents and soldiers kept Talon busy in a hard-fought running battle across elevated roads between holographic advertisements and towering skyscrapers.

Within that facility we discovered the purpose of Talon's collaboration with the Shimada clan: an omnic production factory, turning out combat-chassi models with minds preloaded full of the Shimada's strange techniques that combined secret technology and warrior prowess.

So, yes, Talon was making robot ninjas.

This, we reasoned, was why Talon had attempted to capture Genji several months ago: his ninja techniques, developed as adaptations to his cyborg body, would have proved invaluable data for these creations.

As it was, they turned out to be deadly enough, as we sound found out when a scientist discovered us and, before we could disable him, activated a number of the robots. In the ensuing melee, I was separated from the Shimada brothers in the dark, maze-like corridors of the underground base. Alone, I fought against several of the half-machine warriors, and after a tough battle I was victorious, though not unwounded.

I know, I know -- I always seemed to have trouble with groups of faceless enemy soldiers in those days. But in my defense, they were robot ninjas.

I had planned to search out my companions once I'd caught my breath, but first I took a moment to contact the surface team. In doing so I learned that Talon had responded faster and harder than we anticipated, and our combat troops were in a crisis, pinned down under heavy firepower. Without reinforcements or a flanking maneuver to draw away enemy strength, they were in serious trouble.

I had to make a tough choice, knowing that whichever I didn't choose, somebody could pay for it.

I couldn't leave the soldiers up top to die, outflanked and outgunned. The Shimadas were heroes, I thought. They'll be fine. Maybe.

An elevator took me up, and I made my way back to the streets, where I commandeered a civilian motorcycle, a bright red monster, and roared off to the scene of the battle. My dramatic entrance was enough to turn the tides, and together with Reinhardt, Mei, McCree, and our mercenary soldier teams, we drove back Talon and scattered them.

Soon afterwards, the earth shook as an explosion rocked the underground complex. I rushed to the entrance of the facility, where only a single bloodied figure emerged: Genji, with only one of his arms.

Later in Mercy's medical bay, Genji would tell of us of their encounter with the Reaper, as well as another operative we hadn't encountered before, a woman with violet armor and an androgynous David Bowie sort of look who Reaper called "Doc". Mercy confirmed this was an old researcher colleague of hers, Moira O'Deorain, who after her blacklisting from the scientific community for unethical research was recruited by the secretive Blackwatch division under Gabriel Reyes, the man who would later become Reaper. Their combined strength alongside the Talon ninjas was too much for the Shimadas to fight alone. They had agreed to set off a chain reaction to destroy the facility, and then escape together -- but in the end, Hanzo had sacrificed himself for his brother to escape. "He knew the whole time that the plan would only save one of us," Genji sighed. "He was always the smart one."

Despite his standoffish surliness, Hanzo had consistently been a steadfast, reliable member of the team, and fought in many missions without complaint or error. His wisdom had guided us, and his arrows flew true every time. It was the first loss of an agent since the new team had formed. His absence would pain us. I was angry at myself for a long time for leaving him, and it hurt to imagine him dying down there, alone in the darkness. But I took some comfort when I realized that perhaps, in the end, he had found the redemption he always sought.

As it turned out, Talon had anticipated our attack. Not only anticipated -- they had counted on it. Not only had they prepared the swift and brutal counterattack that put our combat team in such a bad spot, but simultaneously another job was activated, designed to exploit our distraction. Doomfist, the long-imprisoned leader of Talon, was broken out of his maximum security prison by his operatives, and immediately launched an attack on a museum exhibit in Numbani, the City of Harmony, for the purpose of reclaiming his signature weapon, the eponymous Doomfist gauntlet. A secondary team of Overwatch agents was sent to intercept, but Doomfist deliberately endangered civilian lives to draw them off, and they ultimately failed in their attempt to prevent him from retaking the gauntlet and escaping.

Right away, those of us still in fighting shape assembled in the Watchpoint to discuss how to respond to Talon. But before we decided on anything, we had more problems.

The consortium of mega-corporations who represented the balance of economic and military power in the world had been relatively quiet about our actions up until now. None of us had been sure exactly what they had gained by letting us operate under their noses. Now we learned why: they were just waiting for the right time to strike. By now they had amassed enough footage and evidence they could spin to thoroughly demonize us to the public as terrorists and murderers. Almost all of our global policing actions since the refounding were twisted and recontextualized into offensive and destructive actions. Even Kilimanjaro's volcanic eruption was portrayed as our fault, and distant, grainy footage of Mei and myself in reflective hazard suits walking on the side of the volcano was shown as evidence that we had in fact caused the seismic incident leading to the eruption. We were portrayed as the evil masterminds who secretly were behind everything.

Soon the new Overwatch's reputation was under severe attack on all fronts. Our supporters were hounded, their net histories dredged, every incidence of support shown as evidence of support for terrorists, anarchists, madmen who would cause a volcano to go off just out of hunger for mayhem and destruction. Our crowdfunding dried up immediately, and any semblance of public support vanished.

Worse than our disconnection from our supporters, however, was the consortium's announcment of a new anti-Overwatch task force: a revamped Interceptors, designed specifically as a countermeasure to Overwactch operations throughout the globe. Similar to both Overwatch and Talon, it was structured as a paramilitary force with a vanguard of elite agents with special abilities and unique technology. Symmetra, a Vishkar lightbender architect and a formidable opponent we'd already nearly lost to in a battle of one against six in Brazil. Zarya, a former Olypmic weightlifter turned patriot, leased out by the Russian Government as a private soldier for Volskaya Industries, Russia's primary arms manufacturer. Much to my despair, the pilot of the Raptora IV, the decorated Helix enforcer, Fareeha Amari. The team's leader stood beside her in the publicity shots, wearing a similar suit of armor in bright red to her sky blue. Marduk, decorated Iraqi soldier and pilot of the new and advanced Raptora VI.

My fear of what would happen to the team now was almost overshadowed by my wounded pride and jealousy, seeing Fareeha stand beside him there. Almost.

I would later learn of this new team that behind the shining images shown to the public, not all was as it seemed. But at the time I knew nothing of that. All I knew was that we were officially targets of a worldwide manhunt, and an elite squadron had been formed with one purpose: to hunt down and destroy Overwatch.

From then on our missions were consistently dogged by the Interceptors and their support troops. We had to fight against criminals on one side and the law on the other, with us in the middle. The success rates of our missions took a significant hit, which only gave the news more ammunition against us, as successful terrorist acts from Talon, Null Sector, and the Deadlock Gang were passed off as our handiwork, and not something we had desperately tried and failed to prevent.

With the Interceptors on our tails, just keeping the world from disintegrating was more than we could handle. And the more we fought, they closer they came to finding our base in the Watchpoint.

We did what we could. There was no ruse or strategem we came up with that would aid us in this situation without making things worse, or abandoning civilians to a grim fate. All we could do is dig in and kept going, and that's what we did. Our work was hindered by the constant interruptions by responding Interceptor squads, but in a way it only made us more efficient, forcing us to do our jobs under even more intense time pressure than usual.

On one notable occasion high I ended up in a solo battle against Pharah. Just like the old days, when I was a thief and she was a watchdog. Once again I felt like a mouse trying to escape a hawk. I dodged rockets, dropped obstacles in her path, did everything I could to pull one over on her and escape, while she doggedly pursued me with superior air mobility and firepower.

I hailed her several times during the chase, apologizing for past trangressions, confessing to crimes real and imagined, pleading with her to see reason, to feel compassion, to say something. Anything.

She never did. Not one word.

There was an occasional bright spot during this time. In Hanzo's absence we were shorthanded, but we soon received a new agent from somewhere unexpected. Brigitte, who until then had faithfully tended our repair shop under the stairs, revealed that in a secret collaboration with her father Torbjorn she had forged an armor suit in emulation of Reinhardt's Crusader armor, which she understood well after repairing it herself so many times. She had equipped herself with a smaller, less cumbersome version of Reinhardt's energy shield; a strange, flexible reach weapon she called a "rocket flail", and a set of portable armor packs much like her father's. Reinhardt had been training her behind our backs all this time.

Brigitte requested a training match with me to showcase her new equipment, and like a fool I agreed, not realizing what kind of trouncing I was in for. Her shield and armor protected her from my gun, and the reach, speed, and stunning impact of her flail made my mobility nearly useless. Her kit was practically made to beat me up. I conceded after several minutes of tough fighting, in which I'd barely managed to land a hit on her and been thoroughly pummeled in return. After Reinhardt's training, she knew how to fight, which I painfully acknowledged. But it was almost worth the bruises to see her break her stern facade after the battle to grin widely and cutely pump her fist "yes"! Almost.

After the training match, her two dads started arguing again. Torbjorn might have helped his daughter make the suit, but he still expected her to primarily focus on engineering, continuing to help him out in the forge with repairs and advancements. Meanwhile Reinhardt insisted his protege was ready for full-time combat duty. Having witnessed it firsthand I agreed with him that she was definitely ready for combat, but it was also true that our engineering staff was still shorthanded.

I asked Brigitte to split the difference, and divide her time as best she could between engineering and combat. She was clearly more than capable when it came to fighting, and as I would soon find out, would prove to be an extremely valuable addition to our team. But without a more robust staff of high-end armorsmiths and metallurgists, we couldn't afford to lose her innovations in the forge. She agreed, saying she couldn't leave her old dad all alone in the forge by himself, because who knows what he'd do? And she gave Torbjorn a smile as he scowled and shook his finger up at her.

Shortly after this we received another new agent from an equally unexpected source. After the death of his brother, Genji asked for some time alone, which we gladly granted. We found out later that he had journeyed to Nepal, returning to the Shambali monastery high in the Himalayas and the Omnic monks who meditated there.

Years ago Genji had come here before, after his transformation into a cyborg, wrestling with dark thoughts. His body was mended, but his spirit was still broken, and it was the Shambali monks who aided him in his recovery, guiding him to the tranquility he once possessed. Now he sought it once more. Not only did he find what he was looking for, but he brought back a friend as well.

Genji's spiritual teacher, Zenyatta, was often considered a lesser guru than many of his compatriots. Too attached to the material, some would say. But perhaps it was this attachment that led him to follow his young protege Genji down from the mountain. Zenyatta joined us at the Watchpoint, where his unfailingly polite manner and deep meditative wisdom belied his shocking combat prowess. His internal manufactory could manifest metallic spheres in a ring around him, similar to a Buddhist halo, which he would impel at great speeds. It was less like a gun and more like throwing a steel baseball close to the speed of sound. No less effective for its unorthodoxy, as shown by the dents in our training room wall. He also demonstrated something he called "the orbs of discord and harmony" -- there was an orb theme -- which he could use to heal allies or hinder enemies. All in all he seemed a valuable addition, and we were all glad that Genji had convinced him to join us.

>I asked him to serve as a battlefield medic, giving us a third combat healer with Mercy and Lucio, and being the most potent offensive option among them.
>I asked him to focus seeing to the mental well-being of our team, as well as assisting the wounded in the medical bay.

Though Zenyatta had proved himself an effective combatant, I asked him to focus on other duties. Our team had been through so much already, many of us stressed and overworked to the brink, and I asked Zenyatta to use his spiritual wisdom as a monk of the Shambali to help us through the tough experiences we'd had. He was more than accepting, in fact for a Buddhist robot he was positively thrilled. I think he liked the idea of using his knowlege for something practical, rather than sitting in a monastery pondering.

I was doing okay, all things considered. The only thing I wanted to talk about was Fareeha, which would have been weird. I didn't want the team to know I'd once had a thing with one of the Interceptors so relentlessly pursuing. So I let the others take advantage.

Some took to the experience better than others. Zenyatta kept to doctor-client confidentiality, although he would later allude to me that Mercy had much to talk about and was grateful for the chance to be on the couch instead of in the psychiatrist's chair for a change -- and he did say, with a polite laugh, that Torbjorn sat sullenly without speaking for the entire first session, and McCree just reminisced about his varied sexual conquests. Zenyatta also had some kind of rapport with Bastion. They would sit unspeaking together for hours. The monk would tell me that they were, in fact, communicating, and that silence can speak as loudly as words. I could never tell when he was joking.

Our spirits were raised by the additions of Brigitte and Zenyatta to our ranks. But we still found ourselves in a dire situation. Always one step behind a reinvigorated Talon under the leadership of Doomfist. Hounded by corpsec and an elite squad designed specifically to kill us. And with everyone who got their news from corpnet believing we were secretly a cabal of terrorist masterminds. Our morale was improving, but our supplies were low, and our missions became harder every time we went out there.

The one advantage we still held was our base in Gibraltar, still secret to all but Talon. The Watchpoint was our fortress, our staging point, and our home. At least we all had a place where we could be safe, and be together. At least we had that.

And then we didn't.

There was no alert. No warning. Our automated systems were bypassed, our comms disrupted. The first we knew of the attack was the sound of gunfire coming from the outer perimeter. I didn't even know who it was until an outer wall was breached right in front of me, and the smoke cleared to reveal an Omnic army marching on the base. Multiple other breaches were detonated shortly after. No time to organize a defense plan, no comms to contact other agents. Everybody just grabbed a weapon and attacked the nearest robot.

Nobody knew who was in control at the time, only that a robot army had smashed in our front door and was shooting at anyone they could find. Later on we determined who was responsible, the mind with the intelligence to cross-reference all our evasive flight paths and camouflages, to see the truth behind our deceptions. A collection of Anubis fragments had joined to form a weak but sapient version of itself. It deduced our base's location, corrupted all the omnics it could find in a 500 mile radius, and attacked with everything.

So as if we didn't have enough problems, a murderous AI was gunning for us as well, and had launched a decisive attack. Our defenses slowed its army down. But we couldn't stop it. We were losing.

It was in this battle that I soon became grateful that I'd rescued so many of our mercenary guardsmen from the battle in Tokyo. Without them, who knows how quickly our defenses might have fallen? As it was, we had some time to get things under control and start the evacuation procedures. The wounded and vulnerable, the non-combatants, all were escorted to the hangar bay. I argued with Tracer over who would pilot the escape craft -- we both wanted the other to get to safety, and stay behind to fight ourselves -- but eventually I convinced her to do it. I took a moment to watch the ship fly away, glad of her safety,

Then the heavy troops arrived, and the soldiers' firepower wasn't enough, and there was no choice to fall back.

The base was lost. The only question now was how much we would lose as we ran.

The hardest battle was at the front gates. I could see the lights of muzzle fire and explosions, hear the battle cries of Reinhardt over the gunfire as he stood resolute in defense. I felt that surely they would soon break, that the main assault team would punch through any moment now. But Athena had sent me a desperate message using an emergency transmitter: a detatchment had attacked her primary server room, and soon would have direct access to her systems. I couldn't help them both.

>I went to the front gates to help Reinhardt. I couldn't let him fight alone.

I had to save Athena. If she were turned by Anubis, made into his weapon, there's no telling what kind of damage it could cause. All of humanity, the entire world, was at stake. I had to turn my back on one man for that, no matter how much it hurt me to do so.

In the server room I found Winston, defending a relentless onslaught of Omnic combat drones. In between the gunbots darted slicers, small walking welders designed to rapidly disassemble armor and structures. Winston was holding them off all on his own, but just barely. His tesla cannon sparked and fizzled as it began to run out of charge, and his armor was cracked by bullets and scorched by slicers. Even his glasses were broken. I got there just in time, as an Eradictor unit lined up its cannon for the final blow only to be sliced in half by my sword. I fought viciously against the other omnics, Winston discarding his cannon and leaping into the fray alongside me with only his fists. Together we defended Athena and kept her safe.

But at the front gates ...

I didn't see it happen. There are no camera logs of the event. But Brigitte was there, standing by her mentor, fighting beside him with her new suit of armor just like his. Later she would speak to me about it. They fought alongside each other, she said, standing against the oncoming tide of metal, until the last moment when Reinhardt, bleeding from a dozen wounds, pushed her away from the front line. "Go," he told her. "You must fight for me now." And he turned back to the ranks of Omnics to swing his hammer one last time. As she told me, tears came to her eyes, and maybe to mine as well.

Reinhardt was the strongest and greatest of us. His fighting spirit was unmatched, and its absence was a hollow place in our team we could never fill.

But he was an old warrior. His long years had been well lived. And he died as he had always wanted to die. Standing against evil. Defending the innocent. Fighting until his last breath.

It's funny -- I thought I would remember him as the big man in silver armor, who led us into battle shouting his war cry, swinging his hammer. Instead I remember the old man with kind eyes, who made me feel at home in a strange new world.

I still miss you, big guy.

It was our darkest hour yet. With our base destroyed, Anubis on the rampage, our operations hounded by the interceptors, and Talon stronger than ever, the thought of continuing our mission was daunting. It would be difficult, maybe impossible, to recover from this. All of us knew this, though no-one dared speak it out loud. The team was silent as a grave as I piloted the Orca away from the place that had been our home.

I watched the dark ocean pass by outside the Aurora, and as I did I asked myself honestly, was this it?

Was this the fall of everything we'd worked for?

No.

Not yet, I told myself.

This is not the end.

I parked the aircraft on a remote island and went back into the bay to talk to the others. They had found their resolves again as well. We didn't know what we would do, or what we could do. But we were sure as hell going to do something.

One thing gave us hope. Bastion was with us, there in the Orca, and somebody mentioned how odd it was that Anubis was unable to corrupt him, even in close proximity. "That's it," I realized. "That's the key to beating Anubis. It was this guy the whole time." I looked up close at Bastion's single eye, and he beeped at me. "Somewhere in there is the key to defeating Anubis. We just have to figure out what it is."

We agreed to split up for now and lay low until we had figured out a course of action. I had a certain private mail server which, hopefully, was still uncomprised, and I told the others about it, said we could all contact each other there whenever we had something.

Some of us who still preserved some anonymity, those of us who could pass for civilian, disappeared among the populace. The more conspicuous agents relocated to Ecopoint Antarctica, hoping to be safely hidden amongst the intense snows. Fortunately we had refurbished the base to habitable status, partly in case of such a situation, though it was still pretty damn cold there.

As for me ...

>I hid among ordinary people as a civilian. I wanted to lay low until just the right time to strike.

I wished the rest of the team luck before I split off on my own. I went to one of my old hideouts, still intact, and made plans to return to vault hunting. Somewhere out there was a weapon that could turn the tides for us, and I was going to find it.

I looked through my old notes on potential targets and settled on the Longinus Institute, a tech vault of extremely dangerous reputation. Within was said to be the Hypersphere Barrier Capacitor, an object also known as the Spear of Longinus, named for the story of the Roman whose spear pierced the side of Jesus Christ on the cross. I wanted that weapon, whatever it took to get it.

So that's why, when I talked to my old friend Silver and she told me a certain person had an offer for me, I took her up on it. I wasn't in a position to turn down help.

I had a lot of crazy ideas about who the girl calling herself Bandit might be. A jilted lover? A reverse-gender mirror universe duplicate? A female clone of myself, perhaps grown by my mother as a replacement when I escaped? I even briefly entertained the theory that she was my mother herself, acting out some kind of bizarre revenge plot. Seems stupid in hindsight, really, but I was grasping at straws for ideas on who she might be, and how she might know so much about me.

In the end the explanation was far more mundane. When I confronted Bandit on her history, she described herself a "fan", although after hearing her story I might have used the word "stalker" and "identity thief" instead. She had obsessively followed my exploits as the vault hunter Bandit, learning everything there was to know about me. When I disappeared after stepping into my new persona as Seeker, she saw it as an opportunity to assume the mantle of Bandit for herself. She contacted my client list under my name, and claimed that all business would be done by remote now. If the clients had any reservations, they ended when the loot started rolling in. Success is a great convincer, and despite her inexperience, Bandit had a real talent for the job.

I felt:
>Good that I had inspired someone with my exploits.
>Angry at having my previous identity stolen out from under me.
>Creeped out that I'd had a stalker and never realized it.
>Weird, since I never got used to working alongside someone in my old outfit but with feminine curves.

It was strange, working alongside her. I resented her, a little, for stealing my old identity. More for selling weapons to terrorists. I think that, perhaps subconsciously, I was even mad at the idea that she was a better version of the old me. That said, it was hard to resist her bright smile and bubbly optimism, and every once in a while she'd say something I laughed at, which helped to keep me from getting tense. But I couldn't forget that she was, fundamentally, a stalker, and this whole persona of hers came about from some bizarre attempt at taking over the life I'd left behind.

As it would turn out, though, I needed every bit of her skills to crack open the Longinus Institute. The inside was composed of bizarre architecture, and we had to get real acrobatic to get anyway. Bandit was faster and more agile than I'd ever been, and obstacles impossible for me to pass were cleared by her spryness. Conversely, she still didn't understand some of the advanced tools I knew how to use to bypass certain locks, identity checks, and scanners -- she wasn't really the sharpest knife in the drawer, though she more than made up for it with reflexes and enthusiasm.

Laser grids. Sealed doors. Toxic gas. Drone guards. One after another we tricked, sneaked, or fought our way past them. Bandit saved my life on more than one occasion, and I saved hers. Listening to her chatter and ramble and tell corny jokes during the quiet parts started to get aggravating, but I managed to keep us both focused on the job.

In the end, after a long and tense descent by rope down a huge vertical chamber, we found the Spear. I insisted to Bandit that I knew exactly how to remove it without triggering any kind of final defense mechanism, which as it turned out was not true at all.

We escaped just before the lab imploded behind us, the entire complex folding in on itself like origami, shrinking to a pinprick, then vanishing with a "pop!"

"Wow!," Bandit said, looking at the hole where the Institute had stood. "Aren't secret bases with self destruct sequences supposed to, you know, EXplode?"

I said, "Guess they really didn't want people finding out about ... whatever it was they did here." I looked at the Spear in my hand, a long cumbersome device of metal and wires that only vaguely resembled a spear. "I wonder just what the hell this is, and what it does?"

"You mean you don't even know?" Bandit asked, incredulous.

"Not specifically. I know that it wasn't made to be a weapon, but it can be used as one." I wondered just what kind of forces I'd unleash by using it.

In addition to the spear, I ended up with something extra from that job:

>A new ally, as I pleaded my cause to "Fembandit" and she agreed to help me further.
>Weapons, not on the level of the Spear, but still superior quality.

Other than the Spear, I was empty-handed. But I'd earned Bandit's trust, as she had earned mine. When I asked if she would help with my greater goal, she was noncommital at first, but when I convinced her that infiltrating an evil headquarters was an equal or greater challenge to a vault, she agreed. It would be awkward to introduce her to the team, but I'd deal with that if and when it happened. We sorted out a method of contact, and I said I'd be in touch.

It was about that time that Doomfist realized that Overwatch was in no position to stop anyone from doing anything, and made his move. We would find out later that he had seized power from the Talon council in a bloody overthrow, which Reaper had aided him in, and now held sole control over the entire vast criminal enterprise. In a manifesto delivered via worldwide broadcast, Doomfist told us his vision: that law and order were shackles to restrain the powerful, that the only rule that mattered was survival of the fittest, that every man should be free to choose his own destiny. The world should be ruled by strength, he said, and it was Talon who possessed that strength.

To demonstrate, a stolen experimental military device was demonstrated, creating a massive explosion in the Iraqi desert, far enough away from Oasis not to damage it, but close enough to show the danger it was in. These were followed by similar test firings, all around the world, in uninhabitated areas uncomfortably close to large population centers. A series of warning shots, demonstrating the power if Talon.

At the same time, reports came in from corpsec and police headquarters around the world of sabotage, infiltration, cyber-attacks, assassinations. Their ability to fight back was crippled. The weak governments were paralyzed, with obsolete militaries unable to track or defeat the advanced technology wielded by Talon.

"There is only one law now," Doomfist said. "Kill or be killed."

I knew who had to stop him. I just wasn't sure how it was possible. Then I received help from an unexpected source.

I had fully expected a trap, and when I entered the building and they emerged from the darkness, I tensed myself for an attack. But none came. Instead, Sombra -- well, first she made fun of me for jumping when they revealed themselves, which wasn't true at all. Then she talked about how the Talon council massacre had happened without her knowledge, that strange as it may seem she didn't actually know everything; how Doomfist was eaten up by delusions of grandeur and had gone too far; that she knew Overwatch was split up and still recovering; that she was prepared to make me an offer.

"An offer?" I asked, wary. "What kind?"

"We'll help you take him down," she said. "We'll work together, just like we did back in Australia. That worked out fine, right amigo? And this time, we'll have Amelie to help us."

It took me a moment to remember Widowmaker's name. I looked at her. She hadn't said much the whole night, just stared at me with those cold eyes.

"What do you think about all this?" I asked her.

"I'm doing what I want to," she said. "As I always have."

I turned back to Sombra. "Does Doomfist know you're not on board with his grand scheme?"

"Ehhh ... he might have some idea."

So that was they had invited me here for, I realized. They were asking for help just as much as offering it. Perhaps we did need each other. I took a moment to think about it, then told them my decision.

Rumors about what else happened that night are entirely unfounded. If this journal does end up getting read by historians, they should definitely know that I would never fraternize with the enemy in that way. Those stories are complete fiction, really. What was that one video called? "Caught in the Spider's Web?" Absolutely never happened. [There is a note here in the file that can't be deleted: "You enjoyed it! <3" signed with a skull and a spider.]

Anyway, I had an offer from Sombra and Widowmaker to team up with me to take on Doomfist and the Talon army.

I wasn't sure where to locate McCree, but Sombra knew exactly where he was. "Not far away," she said with a smirk. "I had a feeling this might happen, which is why I told you to meet here in Dorado." She led me to a small waterhole called Calaveras on the other end of town. There we found McCree, passed out over the bar with a half-empty Tequila bottle beside him. Couldn't blame him, really. The attack hit us all hard.

It took some good effort and a bucket of water to wake McCree up, but he came round eventually. Once he'd dried off and sobered up a little, we told him what we had planned. He was on board, of course, and it as it turned out he knew a lot about the folks we were after. The surviving members of his old gang, the Deadlock Rebels, had joined up with Talon, and they were our first target.

"Most of 'em are rotten sons of guns," he said. "We'll be doin' the world a favor by takin' 'em down. One or two of 'em are all right, though. If you got to tangle with a big metal feller with a bowler hat by the name of Bob, well, you want to watch out for that right hook. But try not to come down too hard on him if you can. Real gentleman, that one."

Sombra said we had two things to do before we could take on Doomfist's stronghold: disable a defensive weapon that protected the fortress, and gain access codes to get inside. Take out the weapon, and we could reach the place. Get the codes, and we could enter.

"Where is this stronghold of his?" I asked Sombra.

"You wouldn't believe me if I told you," she said.

"For the past year I've been on a team with a girl who timeskips, an immortal woman, and a talking gorilla scientist. I can believe a lot."

"Good point, but let's focus on one thing at a time, chico."

She was right. We had to deal with the Deadlocks before we got anywhere, and their base was well hidden. Sombra grudgingly admitted that she couldn't find it herself, with how closely Talon had been watching her. Soon, though, Winston had Athena reinstalled in the Ecopoint base, and with her analysis, we found it. The weapon was being kept on a train, constantly on the move through the dustbowl of the American heartland. A sophisticated jamming device kept it hidden from any scanners. To get the codes, we couldn't just blow it up. We would have to board.

"One last train robbery," McCree said. "This time, for justice." He chuckled as he relit his cigar. "Bein' a hero's funny sometimes."

"That and you're stealing from the people you used to steal with," I said.

"Kid, you don't know the half of it," he said. "Cause I know exactly who's gonna be there. And she ain't gonna be happy to see me."

The night before the train job, Widowmaker approached me alone, on the roof of our motel. "Don't worry, my little fly," she said, standing at the rail beside me. "I won't bite."

"Maybe not today," I said. "What about after? Assuming we live through all this, what happens next? Will you go back to your 'hunt'?"

"Perhaps," she said. "I don't know."

I was surprised. "You always seem so sure of yourself."

"I've lived one life for so long. It's been so long since I gave thought to any other possibility. Could I live another way?"

"Can you?" I asked. "I thought -- well, we all thought that Talon's brainwashing had you locked in to the role of assassin. That you had no choice."

"I thought so too," she said. She traced a finger across the rail. "Now I am not so sure. Am I still under their control now? Perhaps even at this moment I dance to their tune without realizing, a puppet unaware of her strings. Or perhaps--" She hesitated, looked up at the starlit sky. "Was I ever under their control at all? Or is this simply who I am now? Who I have become?"

"We can help you," I said quietly. "We can remove Talon's brainwashing. I don't know how, but -- I'm sure Athena or Mercy could do something. We could bring you back to who you were before. The woman you used to be."

"I am not her," she said. "Amelie Lacroix died on the day she entered the chamber, years ago. I see her memories, sometimes, but I do not feel them. I am not her. But I am not Talon's weapon, either. Not anymore. I am only a spider." She turned to me. "Tomorrow, mon cher, we'll work together. I will have your back, as you will have mine. You have an innocent soul. I believe I can trust you." Her golden eyes stared into mine. "Can you trust me?"

"I don't know," I said after some time.

"Perhaps that's wise," Widowmaker said, looking away. "I don't know if I trust myself either."

"I can believe that you want this job done," I said. "Afterwards -- well, I guess we'll see."

The train never stopped and never slowed down. It had some kind of fabricator built into the front to lay more track as it went, so just removing a section of track wouldn't work. And we needed the codes, so we couldn't blow up the train. Without any more time to think of a complicated plan, we went for the direct approach. I spent the last of my funds to hire Silver as a pilot, and she dropped us on the train. McCree and Sombra at the front, to find the codes. Widowmaker and myself at the back, to disable the weapon.

As it turned out, the spider and fly made a good team. I took the front, fighting my way up the train. I was nervous about having Widowmaker at my back, but asking a sniper to take point wasn't really happening. The first time she fired, I flinched, but she had only used her gun's assault rifle mode to hit someone attacking me from behind. We got into a rhythm for each train car: the door would open, she'd take down the toughest-looking targets with precision shots, I'd barrel into the rest and take them down with my sword.

At one point we were over a bridge when a man I had wounded pulled the pin on all his grenades at once and charged at us, intent on taking us all to kingdom come together. Before I could react, Widow grabbed me around the waist and leapt out of a broken window, pulling us out of the train altogether, just before the explosives blew and the car went in up smoke and flames. Widow swiveled mid-air and fired her grapple hook, attaching to the next car over, and swung us back up there in a feat of three-dimensional acrobatics I could never have done myself.

"That," I said, breathing heavily as I tried to steady my nerves. "Was impressive. Thanks."

"Only I may hunt you," she said with a smile and a glint in her eye.

The last guardian of the weapon was the Omnic that McCree had described: a gigantic fellow with a small bowler hat and a mean right hook. He had the strength to pick up nearby shipping crates and hurl them at us, even to rip apart the train walls with his bare hands. It took everything Widowmaker and I had to fight him together, working as a team and attacking from both sides, keeping him off balance. Finally we disabled him, as I cut both legs out from under him and Widow used her grapple to deliver a swift flying kick, knocking him down. Widow held up her rifle to deliver a finisher, but I gently pushed it back down when Bob held up his hands. "McCree asked us to give him some consideration, remember?" The big guy couldn't talk, but I could see the fight was out of him.

"Tch. If you say so." Widowmaker raised her rifle back to her shoulder, looking down at the bot. He tipped his hat to her in thanks.

The superweapon was something called a Higgs Field Array. Just after I input the last number of the self-detonation codes, another explosion rocked the train. I grabbed onto a guard rail and Widow held tightly to me as the car tilted and yawed wildly. A group of bikes and dune buggies had pulled up alongside us, and they had serious firepower with them. I saw a small team of them peel away, leaving the scene, and I knew they were going to warn the rest of Talon about the attack.

Just then a rocket launcher blew the back half of the car off entirely, and Widowmaker lost her grip on me. She fell towards the hole in the train and out into open air, just barely latching on with her grapple hook -- until a lucky shot hit the cable, and it snapped. Widow hit the dirt, hard. Some of the drivers turned and went back for her.

I wasn't sure why I did it. Was I being practical, and keeping hold of every ally I could get in my dire situation? Or did I feel a kinship with her after she fought alongside me, even rescued me from the fall? Whatever reason I did it for, it happened. I ditched the train and went to help Widowmaker. She was hurt, but not bad, and I was able to help her up to her feet.

"Some would call you a fool for helping me," she said.

"I might say that myself," I said. "But here I am."

When the Deadlock riders came for us, we were ready. Together we got some bikes of our own, by taking them from the frontrunners. A running gun battle tore through the American desert, kicking up clouds of dust through flatlands, dodging between cactuses and weaving through hoodoos, as we stayed one step ahead of the pack, fighting off anyone who reached us. When Widowmaker's bike took a hit, she jumped just before it exploded, arced gracefully through the air, and landed on my bike, keeping hold of her gun the whole time; taking a seat behind me, she fired backwards while I drove. Finally we made it to a wide canyon, too wide to jump as we all found out. Widow fired her grapple and pulled me to safety for the second time that day, as my stolen bike and half our pursuers fell to the ground and crashed far, far below.

The remaining Deadlock riders opened fire from across the canyon, but we got into cover, and soon enough Silver came back for us in the transport ship.

Flying back to the train we found Sombra and McCree halfway, having done what they needed to do. McCree had taken a bad hit, and only due to Sombra's timely medical intervention was his wound healed. He didn't want to talk about it at the time, but later he would tell me a little of his complex relationship with Ashe, the woman who led Deadlock, and how he had encountered her on the train, hesitated in the critical moment, and paid for it. He was wounded, and Ashe escaped.

McCree would still be recovering when it came time for our assault on the Talon stronghold. I could tell he still felt regret over what transpired, and that he couldn't join in on the attack. But there was a silver lining of sorts. After working alongside each other, having his life saved by her, he and Sombra had become something like friends. They discovered a shared taste in strong tequilas, and bonded over stories of Central American low-lifes and barfights in dusty taverns.

I had imagined Doomfist's lair to be something huge and extravagant, and I was not disappointed. A massive airship, an airborne carrier, using infraspace phase tech to remain silent and invisible indefinitely. The weapon we'd disabled on the train was a long-range beam array designed to prevent any airborne approach, but with that gone and security codes in our possession to bypass the carrier's defenses, we could stroll right up to it. Once Sombra gave her an energy signature to look for, Athena could track the ship's motion over the American desert, and we were in business.

It was time to take Talon head-on in the decisive battle that would settle things once and for all. All of the remaining agents of Overwatch got together again to plan our attack. Our reunion was heartfelt but brief, as we all knew our purpose, and after reaffirming our resolve we started planning our biggest mission yet.

With the train job successful, the outer defenses could be bypassed, and the primary security doors unlocked. But that was just the beginning. Once on board, we'd be up against the top echelons of Talon's army, Doomfist's personal staff and guards. It was also likely that, fearing an attack, some if not all of their elite operatives would be recalled for defense. So all in all, we faced some serious resistance.

This wasn't going to be easy. But it had to be done.
>>
>>3694763
Don't they have advanced warning we are coming?

Why can't we just blow it up? Why do we need to board it?

Together we all sketched up a plan that involved splitting up into three teams of four.

The first squad, Team A, would seize and hold a control room, easily accessible from the deck. There they would stay to interfere with security and direct the other teams via the helicarrier's own surveillance systems. That team would need to be specialized in holding ground defensively against enemy counterattacks, and required at least one agent with some tech skills to handle security and play "mission control" for the rest of the assault force.

The second squad, Team B, was assigned to the engine room. Their mission was to disable the helicarrier. Flying out over the open desert, a crash landing wouldn't hurt anybody except those on board. They were equipped with serious explosives that would be set off by remote -- ideally, after all Overwatch agents had left the carrier. That team would need to quickly traverse the airship without getting bogged down, and hit the engine room hard and fast before Talon knew what hit them.

The third squad, Team C, had only one job. Take down Doomfist.

Balanced, and we can trust 3/4ths of this team. Plus, Torbjorn is the best choice for disabling the engines.

Doomfist hits like a truck, 2 tanks and Mercy's incredible healing will be more than enough to soak the damage, and Genji can deal incredible amounts of damage.

Sombra's stealth will be a huge advantage for them getting into the engines on B.
Widow being able to one hit commander's and such will be a huge boon for Team A.

We'd be giving up on her tech expertise on Team A. But I feel Winston or Mei could do a decent-ish job.

Losing a sniper for the engine disabling doesn't feel too important, as engine areas tend to be CQC.
