The Lighthouse War is over, but conflict still continues.

With Erusea's defeat at the hands of the Osean Federation and the International United Nations, the imperial nation has splintered into a confusing mess of separatists, freedom fighters, warlords, rogue military factions, and those seeking to profit from the chaos. Worse, Erusea's many automated drone factories still remain intact, waiting for new masters to come to claim them.

The Usean continent remains in crisis, and it's up to a new generation of pilots to face this next generation threat...

You are MILLY, the "Red Tail", a Belkan Air Force pilot fighting for the IUN!

You didn't have to be outright told that an explosion occurring at the same time as an important gathering of VIPs wasn't exactly a good sign. Thankfully, security was one thing they didn't skimp on, and almost immediately guards were swarming the floor, calmly herding guest and refugee alike into the Lighthouse's underground tunnels.

Meanwhile up above in the dimming evening sky, you could already see helicopters and planes circling the air, keeping an eye for any aerial threats. You're not too sure if Bandit or Vicky are up there, but you do see a lot of IUN F-18s.

"Milly." Misono grabs your hand with concern. "Perhaps we should-"

Suddenly, more explosions, this time in the sky. You look up again to see the same IUN F-18s now tangling with drones. More of those damn things?!

Suddenly, Jaeger is there, Ellisa already safely stowed away under one of his arms while the other puts a concerned hand on Karla's shoulder.

"Karla, there's a helicopter ready to evacuate us to the airbase on the mainland. We need to go now." He instructs.

"Wait." Karla pauses and looks to you and Misono. "You two should come with us. Your planes are at the airbase, right?"

Well, she wasn't wrong.

"Yeah, let's go." You nod.

"Follow me." Jaeger says simply, Ellisa still secured tight under his arm.

"I can go myself!" Ellisa whines, her tiny legs kicking fruitlessly.

"Shush, this isn't the time." Jaeger grunts as he moves off, easily parting the crowds.

"Of course something like this had to happen, huh?" Karla groans. "Can't even go anywhere nice and just enjoy things."

"Do you know who is responsible for this?" Misono asks as she tries to keep up. Her kimono proves difficult to move quickly in.

"Hell if I know. Considering how screwed up this whole continent is, it could be anybody, honestly." Karla sighs.

Soon enough, you're led outside where you see a large helicopter parked on the pavement, surrounded by a ring of guards. None of them were the refugees, you noticed, but guests just here for the event. Jaeger continues to push through the crowd. One of the guards, a woman with dark blue hair, notices him approaching and immediately waves him through.

"Thanks, Tarin." Jaeger grunts and nods towards you and Misono. "We got two extra."

"That should be safe enough." Tarin nods. "Takeoff might be delayed, though."

"Why?" Jaeger raises an eyebrow.

"Nikanor wants to cram as many guests into the helo as possible since it isn't filled to capacity." Tarin shakes her head. "It'll only be a short hop, but we'll be dangerously overloaded."

"Can't they take shelter underground?" Misono wonders.

"That's a possibility." Tarin confirms. "But some people aren't willing to take that chance."

"Damnit." Karla frowns. obviously conflicted.

"Karla." You grab her arm, your concern clear on your face. "We don't have time to waste. The quicker we can get to our planes the quicker we can get back here to help."

"You're right." Karla nods, now fully convinced. "Tarin, you're just going to have to tell Nikanor we can't spare the space or weight. We'll have to trust the IUN to handle things."

"Roger." Tarin nods and clicks on her radio to report the decision.

Meanwhile, you continue to follow Jaeger up to the helicopter, where you're all quickly ushered in. Upon entering, you immediately see that President Armstrong, Prime Minister Nikanor, and Director Labarthe were all present in the helicopter. Well, that actually made sense, considering all three of them were the most important of the VIPs here.

However, you could immediately tell from their expressions that none of them were happy with this turn of events.

Jeez, you'd rather stay out of getting caught up in petty politics, especially with that asshole Labarthe guy hanging around.

Heading into the cockpit, you can see the clearly anxious pilots as they rush through the startup procedures. The copilot then turns his head and catches sight of you just as the rotors start to spin of.

"Uh, can I help you?" He asks.

"Just taking a look." You say. "I'm a pilot myself, you know."

"Well great, how about you keep an eye out for us, then?" The copilot points to a side window, where you could see a large minigun mounted in the opening. "You don't need to work the gun, but having you call out anything suspicious to us would be a great help."

Aw hell yeah. Something to do!

The helicopter soon lifts off. You grab a spare radio headset hanging next to the door gun and keep an eye on...

You keep your attention focused on the sky, where you could see that the F-18s were still engaging the enemy drones. They were managing to keep them away from the island, but they were clearly struggling to do so. Missile contrails and explosions littered the sky as drone after drone was downed, but they seemed to keep on coming.

That's when you notice a pair of Typhoons shriek in from the mainland, flying Ustian colors. They waste no time diving right into the thickest concentration of drones, sending easily half a dozen spiraling down into the sea to their doom.

Another shriek of jet engines, and this time you see an F-15E in what you swear are Belkan colors shoot past. Your suspicion that it might be Bandit is all but confirmed when Vicky's Gripen comes trailing behind a good distance. Looks like they weren't wasting any time, either.

You quickly fiddle with your headset, trying to set it to your squadron frequency. Finally, you get the right settings as your headset begins to buzz with static.

"Yo! Bandit, can you hear me?" You ask.

"Red?" Bandit's replies, his voice actually mildly surprised. "What's your status?"

Ah, quick and to the point as usual.

"Me and Misono are on an evac helo heading to the airbase. We got a few VIPs with us."

"So you're safe, then." Bandit concludes. "If there's no threat near you, we're heading to help the other IUN forces. It's chaotic, but we're hearing reports of ships attempting to land on the island so we might need to interdict them."

"You go do your thing, Bandit." You say. "I don't see anything around here so we should be fine."

"Roger that." Bandit replies.

"G-good luck!" Vicky interjects.

With that, Bandit and Vicky continue on their way towards the Lighthouse where the main furball was occurring.

Even though the island was close to the mainland, the flight over the bay still seemed like it was taking an eternity. You're left anxious and alert as you look for any further threats, but thankfully nothing materializes. Looks like those IUN mooks were good for something after all.

Finally, the helicopter sets down on the airbase. Almost immediately, the leaders are hustled away to safety, along with Karla, Jaeger, and Ellisaria. While you were tempted to follow them, you had bigger priorities to worry about.

"Come, let us join in the battle!' Misono says as she dashes for the hangar.

"You don't have to tell me twice! You grin.

Already, you can see the ground crews hurriedly readying your planes. You see Mead present as well, barking orders to the technicians when she catches sight of you.

"Oh good, you're here!" Mead points to your new Su-30. "We're trying to load up some munitions but it's going to take some time. We were still shaking down your new plane so it wasn't armed up."

You strip out of your formal wear, haphazardly tossing it to the side as you quickly pull on your flightsuit in a flash of activity. Misono is also some able to slip out of that oppressive kimono of hers and meets you as you exit the locker room.

"Are you prepared, Milly?" Misono asks as she secures her sword to her side.

"As ready as I'll ever be." You nod. "Mead! How are things going?"

"Sorry, we could only mount two missiles." Mead sighs in defeat. "It's just too much in too little time."

"Don't worry, I'll figure out a way to make it work." You assure her. "At least the cannon rounds are full?"

"It's about the only weapon that's fully stocked." Mead confirms.

"Then that's good enough." You grin as you start climbing up the boarding ladder.

It's another few minutes of waiting as several more IUN fighters are scrambled out ahead of you. Finally, it's your turn, as you and Misono throttle up and take off from the runway. Even this early, you immediately feel the improved performance of your Su-30, being much more agile and responsive.

"Red, how will we approach?" Misono asks. "High or low?"

If you wanted to get into the action as soon as possible, you'd have to go low since climbing would take extra time. However, that could prove advantageous if you could get the height advantage...

At first glance, the battle looked like a chaotic mess, with IUN planes and enemy drones tangled in a massive furball. However, from your high position, you were able to pick out several choice targets of opportunity.

Farther out to sea, you could a pair of container ships launching drones from their decks, no doubt disguised drone carriers that were the source of the hostile drones.

Around the island itself, you could see several smaller boats having landed on the beaches, with the invaders trading small arms fire with the entrenched security forces.

Finally, there was the furball itself, with drones jinking and juking as they danced with the human IUN pilots. However, as drones, their situational awareness was pretty abysmal at best, and they'd be easy pickings from above, especially with their "attention" drawn away by more pressing threats. Plus if the drones were thinned out it would free up more IUN pilots to hit the other targets...

"R-Red?!!" Vicky wails as her Gripen pulls a sharp snap turn, heading right at you.

Your heart starts beating faster and faster as Vicky flies closer. Despite having come out in a rush, despite having almost no ammo on board and certainly despite being heavily overpopulated, you could swear you were starting to feel a little bit excited...

As you dive down to Vicky's position, you could spot the two MQ-99s on her tail, zipping about as they tried to get a target solution on your wingmate. Thanks to your altitude advantage, you had two ways of handling this.

You could simply commit to your dive and hit the MQ-99s head on at a high angle. However, you'd basically only have one shot tagging both of them before your momentum shoots you past them.

Your alternative was to perform a sharp, banking turn to get behind the drones, giving you a better setup to knock them down, but it would take a precious few extra seconds that Vicky might not have.

No time to waste, you nose your SU-30 downwards to face the pair of MQ-99s directly. You were approaching too fast and too close for missiles to lock, so you'd have just have to rely on your guns for this one.

"All right, Swordfish, break!" You yell.

Vicky doesn't even bother taking the time to reply. Her Gripen immediately rolls to the side, out of your line of fire. You snake your crosshair right over the air between her and the drones. If your hunch was right, they'd take the most direct route to keep their sights on Vicky...

One of the MQ-99 drones is immediately shredded in half by the hail of bullets, but the second sees the death of its partner and reacts with machine precision, immediately diving away and spoiling your aim for your second burst.

"T-thanks, Red!" Vicky sighs in relief as her Gripen levels out.

"No problem." You say say as you keep an eye on the drone that eluded you. You could keep going after it, but it lost a lot altitude in that evasion maneuver and wasn't an immediate threat, unlike the others still tangling with your IUN allies.

You push down your desire to chase the wayward drone, instead deciding to help the other IUN pilots. You could pad your killcount later.

"Swordfish, for up, we ain't done yet!" You remind her.

"R-roger!" Vicky's Gripen takes position just off your left wing.

"Brighteye, are you up there?" You ask on the AWACS channel.

"Yup! Whacha need?" The chipper AWACS operator responds quickly, her mood not matching the current situation.

"We need a quick update on what's going on!' You say as you glance at your radar, which was just a messy blob of contacts at this point. "Where are the drones the worst at?"

"Er, well, Sea Dragon squadron is trying to make an attack run on the drone carriers, but they're having a hard time!' Brighteye reports. "And, um, Orpheus Squadron is drawing away the majority of the drones but I'm not sure they can fight them all off!"

"Bandit?" You ask your squadron leader.

"We're suppressing the drones trying to provide ground support." Bandit replies. "Targeting is up to your discretion."

Oh boy, Bandit letting you off the leash? Sweeeeet.

"All right, Swordfish, stick close, we're heading back into the furball!" You say as you bank your Su-30 in the direction of Sea Dragon's engagement. "Brighteye, can you let them know we're incoming?"

"Already done!" Brighteye chimes.

As you close the distance, you can see that Sea Dragon was in the proper furball. All full squadron of F-18s tangling with a roughly equal number of drones, weaving in and out endlessly as both sides tried to get a shot at the other. It was pretty clear these Sea Dragon guys were nuggets, though. Any decently skilled pilot should be able to knock down a simple drone or two easy.

"T-that looks like a lot of them..." Vicky mumbles.

"Isn't it great?" You grin.

And just like that, you manage to thread the needle and dive right into the thick of the aerial melee. Immediately, you spot a pair of MQ-99s chasing after an F-18 and lock on them. At the angle you were at, you couldn't get your gun lined up but maybe you could use your missiles.

But these were your only two so you had to use them carefully...

Your first practically shreds the first drone in half, sending its pieces plummeting to the sea below. You yaw your Su-30 slightly to the left to hit the second drone. However, your burst isn't quite as accurate, only punching a few holes into its wing.

However, whether it was just a quirk of its maneuvering, or if some part of its programming was telling it to retreat back to its carrier, the drone performs a hard bank back towards one of the two container ships acting as drone carriers. Unfortunately for it, the weakened wing snaps off, putting it into an uncontrollable spin that sends it crashing right into container ship.

A scant few seconds later, explosions ripple across the entire length of the container ship, sending fire, drones, and even entire cargo containers flying through the air. Looks like that drone hit something particularly explosive when it crashed-

"Holy shit!"

"What the hell happened?!"

"The drone carrier's toast!"

"Who fired the shot?!"

"I think it was that Su-30 with the Belkan colors!!"

"A Belkan? No way!"

"Wow! Nice shot, Red Tail! That was amazing!" Brighteye squeaks.

"H-how did you do that?!" Vicky gasps.

"I'm just that good." You say smugly.

"I'm pretty sure that drone crash was just luck." Bandit points out coolly.

"Yeah, well, half an ace's success is luck, right?" You fire back.

"I suppose you have the point." Bandit concedes.

"Um, I hate to interrupt, but the other drone carrier looks like it's turning around!" Brighteye interrupts.

Sure enough, the second container ship was veering around, trying to make a run for the open sea. Sea Dragon were still tangling with the remaining drones, though, so there wasn't anybody immediately available to intercept it.

"Swordfish, lets get that drone carrier!' You order as you bank towards it and throttle up.

"B-but it's still launching drones!' Vicky warns as her Gripen tries to keep up with you. "A-and want if it has AA defenses?"

Hm, well, that was a concern. You could fly low to stay under any potential AA defenses, but that could leave you open to being bounced by a drone. Coming in high would keep the drones from getting into an ambush position on you, but if there were AA weapons on that ship, you'd be an easier target for those.

"Just follow my lead! Trust me!" You say as you nose your Su-30 downwards until you're just barely skimming the water.

"T-this is dangerous, Red!" Vicky wails but follows anyways.

Coming in this low and fast, you were going to have time for only a single pass before you either had to bank away or fly past the remaining drone carrier, so your weapon choice was going to be critical this time.

You flip off the safety for your missiles as the drone carrier grows larger and larger in your sights. At this range against a target of this size, you practically don't even have to aim to hit the ship.

But it was WHERE to hit it that would be the issue. Where best could you strike at?

The bridge was the most obvious section of the ship to hit, it jutting out the top like a large tower. Taking it out would hopefully prevent the crew from being able to effectively control the ship, stopping it in its tracks.

Or maybe the rear of the ship where the engines and propellers were. Taking those out would definitely put the ship to a stop, but it would be a trickier shot.

Or, well, you could try pinpointing which containers were holding all the fuel and munitions for the drones and hit those. Maybe you could get another chain reaction like the first drone carrier...

You fire off your only two missiles. Unfortunately, you're just a bit too close to get a good lock. Your only two missiles unfortunately nosedive right into the water and explode uselessly.

"Shit! Swordfish, can you follow up?" You curse.

"Eeeep! Sorry! I can't!" Vicky wails as her Gripen breaks off from its attack run as drones begin vectoring in on her.

Crap! If you didn't do something soon, then-

All of a sudden, a wave of missiles comes screaming in, plowing into the drones and tearing their formation apart. Another volley of missiles slams into the side of the drone carrier, cracking the hull and causing the ship to list. The pair of Typhoons in Ustian colors then shriek overhead.

"Looks like it's up to Orpheus to finish things up." A cool, calm voice says over the radio. However, it's not Allana's voice. Her wingmate, then? You glance at your HUD, which marks two Typhoons as SCALPEL and GUILLOTINE. Looked it was Guillotine that was speaking.

"And I'm the one that got the carrier kill, you got that?" You hear Scalpel, Allana's voice boast. That was.... weird. She seemed super serious when you met in person. What changed?

"We totally could have handled that ourselves!" You grunt.

"With just two missiles on your bird?" Guillotine grunts, clearly not impressed. "Keep dreaming."

"Pretty ballsy move, I gotta admit." Scalpel adds in. "Then again, we probably shouldn't be praising a Belkan too much, anyways."

"You shouldn't be chattering so much during a mission in the first place." Guillotine tuts. "Clam it up till we get back to base."

"Yeah yeah, roger." Scalpel sighs.

Seriously, was Scalpel the same person you met in the simulator room? It almost didn't seem real.

"Red, form up." Bandit's voice suddenly buzzes in. "Additional IUN reinforcements have arrived and they'll handle mopping up the remaining drones."

"Yeah, sure." You grunt as the Typhoons take off towards the mainland as well, one of them waggling their wings as they pass over you like some smug bitch.

Freaking Ustians.

"Um, Red, is there something wrong?" Vicky asks with concern. "W-was it me? I'm sorry if I screwed up and made you mad..."

"No, it's not that, Swordfish." You sigh. "It was just a tough mission."

"O-oh. Okay then."

It was a quiet ride back to base. However, upon landing and disembarking from the plane, you're immediately met by a tall, blonde female pilot with a big grin on her face.

"So, you're the Belkan giving Alanna so much trouble, huh?" She chuckles. "Name's Angela. I'm the lead for Orpheus Squadron, though can just call me Guillotine in the air!"

Was this the same pilot that seemed so strict and proper during the mission? She seemed like the complete opposite now!

Freaking Ustians.
