"More potential?"

He helps you sit up.

"You said your Mana is close to nothing, I say something is holding you back from achieving your real power. It will be dangerous to do it in such a short time, but I know a way to access it..."

"Let's do it!" You shout and are immediately sent into a coughing fit. Is that thing dripping from your mouth... blood?

Aidhu sighs

"I knew you'd say that. If that's your will, then very well. I'm sure you know that there are many methods to increase Mana: potions, magical trinkets, meditation, all that jazz. Normally I'd give you a pendant or two and make you meditate here for two days straight, but this case is different. We don't want to give you more Mana, we want to get rid of any limitations you might have. Say, kid, do you know what's sure to make people cross their boundaries?"

"Umm, obstacles and hardships?"

"Wrong." He says as he thrusts a dagger into your abdomen "The answer's dying, stupid"

"Wh...Wha-" Blood spills from your open mouth as you stare down at the dagger's elegant handle. You feel like you should say something, but nothing comes to mind. Your vision is getting hazy.

"Get a fucking grip kid. I ain't no murderer, I stabbed you because I believe you can survive this shit by yourself." He's standing over you with his arms crossed. "I should probably warn you though, the other side isn't too nice."

His figure gets distorted, becoming a vague black shape on a steel gray background. He says something, the words reach your ears but your brain doesn't register them. As you feel consciousness slipping away his shape grows, consuming the sky like a black fire until soon there is nothing but overwhelming darkness.

The wakeup was sudden, but much welcome, like a deep breath after a dive. You jolt up, covered in cold sweat and gripping your blanket. Oh thank goodness it was only a bad dream. "Well, so much for increasing my Mana." you thought as you stepped out of bed.

"OUCH!" You cried out as your foot landed on a sharp rock.
A quick look around tells you that this is certainly not your bedroom.

Dry and cracked crop fields stretch as far as the eye can see. Black earth layered with rotten plants and occasional dead trees decorating this lifeless land, it makes for a truly depressing sight. The sky isn't any better - It's dead. Not a single star, not a single cloud, not even the moon or sun, a grey void above your head.

"Done looking around?" An insanely deep male voice asks.

You turn around and see a tall, well-built man with long dark hair. He is wearing a tunic and pants made out of fine, dark silk. The cape he's wearing is black, too and fastened with a shiny silver pin. His face has fine features, hinting noble heritage. A manly square chin and a chiseled jaw, thick eyebrows and a forehead A manly square chin and a chiseled jaw, thick eyebrows and a pronounced brow ridge, but a small perky nose and lush, full lips. It's like everything you've always wished to be has taken a human form and is now standing in front of you.

"You've kept me waiting, Garen."

"Wait, you know my name?"

"I couldn't not know it. Garen! This place you're seeing is your inner world!"

He throws his head back and arms out as if to symbolize the encompassing misery around you

"WHAAT!? My inner world is some endless wasteland? No way, Mr. Perfect."

"The inner world is wholly dependant on you, Garen. The state it's in right now is a result of your absence."

"My absence? What do you mean?"

"Even if they don't realize it, every person is connected with their inner world, it's the natural state of things, however, the thread connecting you has been severed at a young age, far too young for you to remember."

"Severed? By who?"

He points at you and the ground shakes.

"You, Garen."

You fall down as powerful tremors shake the world. Black goo flows from the cracks that formed. It's steaming, and the fumes give off a disgusting smell of hot carcass.
The patch of land the man is standing on is slowly sinking, but he remains unswayed.
"You were born unlucky. Despite being a mere toddler, you had to fight to protect yourself from the otherworldly being that thrived in your soul."

"Oth... Otherworldly being? Soul? What are you talking about."

"You were born in the wrong place in the wrong time... or maybe I should say it was just the right place and time. I'd say the thing got really unlucky, too."
The sludge sizzled as it touched his cape. It's corrosive.

"Had it been any other person it was born into, it would've consumed them and grew even more powerful, but you... You are special Garen. You contained the demon Azgan within."

The earth shook once more, pulling him under into the deadly slime. "No!" You shout, throw yourself to the ground and wait for your demise. The earth splits beneath you and gravel cuts your skin as you land many meters below.

It's pitch black here, the air's awfully still and suffocating, but you're still alive and that's what counts. It seems you landed on a small island in this corrupted ocean. Was it a blind chance you landed here? A booming growl makes you think otherwise...

"20 minutes"

Aidhu exclaimed to himself. It's been twenty minutes since the kid entered stasis. The kid's lifeforce was weak but detectable.

Ten more minutes.

He gave the kid ten more minutes. Thirty minutes in stasis is pushing it. The longest he's ever seen a person survive was 27 minutes. He wondered if it was really a good decision to let the kid do it. He glanced at his stopwatch.

25 minutes

The kid has not moved once. Five more minutes and Aidhu can go book a funeral.

28 minutes

That's it. The kid's lifeforce is gone. He hit the ground in frustration. It was all his fault! What the hell was he thinking when he let Garen undergo this training? He was only a kid! Damn!
Suddenly, the dagger slid out.
Aidhu stared in disbelief. Swelling of the Seat of the Soul, a chakram 13 mm above the navel, this could only mean one thing.

The kid completed his training.

"Garen! Boy! I knew you could do it!"

Overcome with joy, Aidhu jumped to the boy. He barely managed to avoid a lethal attack to the neck. He dashed back, alerted. Garen stood up slowly, a manic grin on his face.

Nallieh'te

Crimson flames erupted from the ground, gathering in his hand and forming an enormous fiery sword, far too big for a human to handle.

Aidhu was far too familiar with this kind of magic. He's seen it numerous times during the Great War. Forbidden techniques that made grown men tremble and reaped countless lives on the battlefields. Unearthly words of power, revealed to those mad enough to sell their souls for knowledge, wielded by those ready to throw their lives away to kill. The black art of the demonic royalty was now used by his own student to attack him.
Aidhu sensed the shift in Garen's Mana. He recognized the extraordinary density, amount and inhuman murderous intent. The realization came upon him.

Garen has been possessed.

The demon controlling his body lunged forward, missing Aidhu's arm by the skin of his teeth. There was no place for holding back, Aidhu was now fighting for his life.

Don't take any chances in melee, just stay back and bind him. Although Aidhu should get ready to draw in the event that Garen closes.
>>
Aidhu reached for a small bag fastened to his belt. He never came unprepared, he always kept a couple of runes on him, for times such as this.
Rummaging through the bag while also avoiding the demon's attacks, he finally found it. A small glass orb covered in thin, almost invisible lines. He waited for his opponent to attack him and then fired the spell.

"Try possessing this, scum," Aidhu said as the sword's blade was caught by a powerful bite. The orb wrapped its tongue around the demon's arm, then grew to an enormous size and swallowed him whole. The mouth shut, becoming a thin line on the orb's surface.

The demon realized what has happened and went into a fit of rage, stabbing it's translucent prison, and when it didn't work, casting spells that could probably turn squadrons of soldiers to dust, if only they weren't blocked by this wonderful rune.

"You're not getting out of here, fucker. Unfortunately for you, Number 13 is an absorbent." A grimace of hatred appeared on the demon's face. "Yes, you heard that right. Those spells you just cast have powered it for another... two hours? I'm surprised you didn't know about it, though. The spell was invented like 400 years ago, you must one ancient fucker."

Aidhu pulled out a piece of chalk from his bag. He'll try to exorcise this demon, he can't risk it hurting Garen's body.

You hear something moving in the darkness. A giant's breath hits you like a gust of wind. It reeks of death.

"Puny human..."

"Uhh, that's me I guess?"

"Oh? You're joking? Instead of trembling in fear, you dare to joke in my presence."

.
.
.

"Yeah, I guess so. Are you that Azgan gu-"

"SILENCE, MORTAL FOOL!" Suddenly you don't feel like joking around anymore. "I've waited for this moment for long 16 years, and every second I wondered, how a weak kid, one of the lesser race that so proudly calls itself 'humanity', was able to imprison me?"

Your eyes are getting used to the darkness, and you're terrified when you realize that what you thought was a hill in front of you is, in fact, the creature's hand, clawed and ghoulish.

Well then, how about you satisfy my thirst for knowledge and I tear you apart as painlessly as possible."

"What kinda deal is that?" You think to yourself. Wait, deal? Why would such a powerful being have to show you all this? Why would it try to force you into submission instead of killing you and moving on? That means it doesn't know how to get out, and it can't kill you before it gets the answer out of you!

"Good thinking, Garen"

You jump up. The guy died, didn't he? Is it a ghost talking?

"I'm a part of you, Garen. I will always be with you, until the day you die. You figured it out. Azgan is in your power. He can't get out, but be vary! If you're careless, he will get the answer out of you and consume your soul."

"Bring it on then, ya eldritch pussy!"

The earth shook as the thing moved.

"I'll teach you not to disrespect me. Writhe in pain, maggot."

It picks you up in one swift movement. Its stone-cold fingers squeeze the air out of you, you squirm around, trying to escape. The hand goes higher and higher for what feels like an eternity until finally, it stops and there's a flash of green light. You only saw it for a brief moment, but the image will be burned into your retinas for a long time. You saw the thing's face.

Its skin was withered and stretched so tightly over its skull that it looked as if it was going to rupture at any moment. It had no hair and Its eyes were sewn shut, there was also an empty eyesocket on its forehead. The veins inside it twitched and pulsated, but it was nothing when compared to the mouth of the thing.
It was a gaping maw, surrounded cracked lips and full of enormous, sharp teeth. Inside it were thousands of fat grubs, crawling, twitching, writhing and jerking. You stared in horror as the hand got closer to the mouth.

Garen's screams reverberated through the darkness, not to be heard by anyone, spare his tormentor...

* * *

Aidhu spilled three drops of dove blood onto the runes he drew - that'll be the final touch to the exorcism circle. He activated the sigils and began reciting the spell.

"Thulani, Mayibongwinkosi, Gcaba..."

The demon started convulsing. He sweat, he shook, foam rolled from his mouth. The spell is working, it's having trouble controlling the body.

"Hambo, Ntandoyenkosi, Nqobile!"

The symbols shone with a warm, golden light and disappeared without a trace. The demon's eyes rolled back into its head. It fell down to the ground, stiff as a ramrod, and then, shakily and slowly, it rose.
Crap! The exorcism didn't work!
It seems to be muttering something under its breath. You try to make out what it's saying when you realize it's a spell! The demon's eyes shone and dark static danced on its skin. It pounded it's fist into the sphere, each hit making the ground shake.
Thud

Thud

Ka-shh!

It's gotten out, and is now charging at you!

Consumed by pain, Garen didn't realize quickly what the sudden movements were, but when it opened it's mouth, he understood.
For whatever reason, the demon was distressed.
You saw your chance to escape. In a sudden rush of rage and relief, you jumped, further than you ever suspected you could. As you flew through the stagnant air, you felt power rising inside of you.
You turned around to face the demon - now illuminated by a warm light.

"It's payback time, motherfucker."

The attack came naturally. Your body was relaxed, every molecule sure of victory. The mana inside you buzzed pleasantly, waiting for release. Your lips moved on their own, uttering foreign words
"Mihir Khar"

An enormous wave of pure concentrated mana pierced the darkness, slicing the demon's chest like a blade. He fell to one knee, wheezing in pain.

"Asles!" Aidhu shouted. A Mana javelin shoot from his index finger, impaling itself in the demon's thigh.

Crap, Aidhu didn't want to injure Garen's body, but it's inevitable, Garen will have to forgive him.

It stopped and grabbed the javelin with its bare hand. Flesh sizzled in contact with deadly energy. One fast movement and a nasty sound of tearing flesh later, the demon was armed with a new weapon. It recommenced its attack, but Aidhu knew the damage was done - it walked with a slight limp, the leg must hurt like a motherfucker...

* * *

You feel the rage inside you growing. This filthy creature dared to attack you? It dared to look down on you? It dared to nest itself in your soul, live in it, poison and corrupt it? You feel a sudden shift in your mana, it has become darker, heavier, wild and savage.
You lift your arm up once again.

"Mihir Khar"

This time the wave is much larger and its shape is less defined. The edges shift and move, become jagged and change back to being smooth in the span of a second. Its color has changed, too. It now has a dark hue, something between navy and violet, as opposed to the pure white you've fired before.
The wave reached the demon's location and cut through the air.
You stared into the darkness, frozen by disbelief. A giant mass of flesh shifted behind you, giving you just enough time to turn around and see a fist coming down to crush you. You close your eyes in surrender. There's a loud bang and a barrage of wind blasts your face, but you're still standing.

"Open your eyes, Garen. The fight's not over yet."

The man from before is blocking the giant's fist. The thing lifts it back up and his figure fades to nothingness, but you're not afraid anymore. You'll fight with all you've got!

You fire one attack after another and dodge its blows.
It's useless, your attacks are barely doing any damage and you have to constantly run around to amove being smashed. You're exhausted, your pace slows down.
The demon's attacks stop.
The sudden silence is wrecking your nerves. You don't know what the bastard's plotting, you can't do anything but anxiously wait for an attack. Suddenly, a light appears in front of you.
The thing is standing on all fours with its jaw opened wider than humanly possible. Intelligible chants fill the cavern and black flames converge deep inside its throat. You understand. It's preparing an attack to end this fight.

There is no use blocking, you'll dodge the attack.
Fully alert you watched as the creature dug its claws into the ground and arched its back like a cat before the attack. It lowered its head. The inferno within its mouth grew even fiercer, raging with black fire. The demon let out an ungodly roar, a sound so savage it struck your heart with primal fear. Wind blew through your hair as the blaze spun, forming a sphere of swirling flames.
It fired.
The fireball was colossal and moved faster than you expected. You try to run, but realize that you won't make it in time.
"Hey, man, I could use some help right now." You say, but He doesn't respond. Crap! You gotta think fast, this is life or death right now.

Gasp

You get an idea so simple and reckless that it might just work. You bite your thumb with all your might. It hurts like hell, but you'll have to endure, the heat is starting to burn. You smear the blood on your arm, as quickly as you can. The result isn't pretty, but it should work. You drew the earth rune Lynx taught you during the first lesson. You pump it with all the mana you've left.

The takeoff is so sudden it almost dislocates your shoulder, but it doesn't matter. The scorching earth beneath you gets smaller and smaller as you head for the ceiling. The demon's angry roars echo through the cavern, you're out of its reach. There's a hole in the ceiling you haven't noticed before. You squeeze through and deactivate the rune, only to fall down to your knees. You didn't notice because of the adrenaline, but your leg got burned rather badly, you can't stand up. Someone offers you a hand. You look up and see The Man, smiling. As you stand up you see gold. You're standing in a patch of ripe wheat, a small island of life in this barren wasteland. This simple sight appears so beautiful to you, it makes you want to cry. It's a golden yellow. It sways on a breeze and makes a slight rustling sound. Somehow, it reminds you of home.

"You did good Garen. It's over, for now. It's time for you to go back, your teacher awaits you."

Magus Aidhu! You completely forgot about him, but then, who wouldn't?
A flash of light blinds you and you feel the slight breeze shift to cold mountain wind...

* * *

"Asles!"
Aidhu cast the spell for the fifth time, aiming for the demon's other leg. He couldn't afford to exchange blows with this monster, certainly not in it's buffed up state. The spell missed once more, the creature was almost too fast to track with the naked eye. It slashed at Aidhu's face, the only thing that saved him was his reflex, sharpened by years of countless battles, the attack did leave a nasty gash though.
He was fed up. He pulled something out of the bag with a swift, almost unnoticable movement, then abruptly stopped. The demon charged straight on, aiming at his heart. When the javelin was millimeters from his chest, it stopped. The demon couldn't move, thick metal chains held it in place.

"How do you like it? It's a little spell I asked the Lynx bastard to make for me. I never quite liked him, but I've gotta admit, the guy's got a knack for this. You can call it a lifeline. As long as it's powered up it'll stop any attack, but it only works once and takes some time to make, so I didn't want to use it. Now, how do I get you out of this body? I figure I'll just have to drive you out with pain. Utpa-"

"Mr. Aidhu! Please, stop! It's me, Garen!"

He eyes the boy down carefully. The wild look on his face is gone, and the mana is no longer sinister. He truly is back.

"Garen? Boy, what the hell happened?"

You proceed to tell him the whole story.

"Azgan, eh? The name does sound kind of familiar, but I can't remember any details right now. I've got some news for you too, boy. I've got your leg, here, drink this, it'll make it heal up." He takes a small vial filled with ruby liquid out of his bag.

* * *

It's thursday. You should be in melee class right now, but Aidhu prohibited you from coming, saying that you have to rest. You can't really complain, he said he'll make it so you don't get into trouble for disappearing for three days, but still, it's so fucking boring sitting in a dormitory all alone when everyone is out there training.

Thanks for the heads up. You're already better than most other QMs because of that alone
>>
You sit down comfortably and calm your mind. You start meditating, imagining a filter in your abdomen as usual. You let mana flow as usual...

What's that?

Why is there so much mana?

It's overflowing! This is useless!

The training clearly brought results. You tame the stream and try clearing it once again. It works, but you're not used to manipulating mana like that and the effort makes you lose focus. After a few more failed attempts you give up and lie down on the bed.
Man, this stuff's hard.
Even though it might seem so because of how drastic the change is, the Mana you have now isn't anything out of the ordinary, on a scale from 1 to ten you'd give yourself a 4. You tried casting the spell you used to fight the demon, but you could only muster up a small white flame, much like the one of a matchstick. You don't really give a shit though, it should be more than enough to beat some cocky thug up.

It's unexpected, but you realize you're looking forward to the fight. You got a taste of combat and got hooked. In fact, you're so excited you can't sit still, so you go for a walk to ease the mind. As you get out of bed, you bang your leg on a nightstand. The pain is very sharp, it's like your thigh is being ripped apart.
You fall down to the floor and scowl.
Aidhu' helped stop the bleeding and close the wound, but the internal damage will be much harder to heal. He said that the wound was nasty enough as it was but because the demon pushed your body to the limit, the muscles we're all torn and cut up. You struggle to stand up
You lazy around for some more time and go to First Circle Magic class.

Your arrival didn't go unnoticed. Obi's shitty mates must've spread rumors about the upcoming fight. people are avoiding you and whispering. You look for Esese and find her leaning against a wall, deep in thought.

"Hey, Es, what's the deal? Why is everyone like that?"

Her expression changes from calm to pissed because you interrupted her, but then she looks at you and it changes to surprised, shocked and then pissed again.

"Where the hell have you been, you sodding idiot!?"

"Uhh, it's a long story."

"You were the talk of the entire school in the last couple of days! Some weak-ass first-grader MAW picks a fight with a big shot delinquent and then suddenly disappears? People were talking ridiculous things, for example, that you got scared and ran away, killed yourself, or, the most unbelievable of all, that you ran away to train in the mountains, comic book style. I mean, isn't that the cheesiest shit ever? Who the hell would buy such crap?"

"Heh..."

The bell interrupts your conversation.

Magus Lynx is already inside the class. Your eyes meet as he's checking the attendance list and his brows frown in anger for a split-second. Once done with the list, he gets out from behind his desk and says:

"Today's lesson will concern the joining together of magical runes created by different people, and so I will need a volunteer."

Woah, new stuff.

You hopelessly try to escape the viscous presence by force, feeling yourself sinking deeper and deeper. Sweat breaks on your forehead and while you notice some people giving you weird looks, it goes mostly unnoticed.

He's a good actor, that's for sure. He's explaining something to the class as if he wasn't magically suffocating his student in this very moment.

What should you do? Excuse yourself under the guise of going to the bathroom?

Maybe that's what he wants? To make you give up and out yourself as a weakling who gets sick from powering the most basic of runes? That's a pretty dirty move for a teacher! Surprisingly, it was the sight of Magnus Bottomfoot napping on his desk in the back of the class that gave you an idea on how to defend yourself.
You close your eyes and put yourself in a meditative trance. It comes quickly, probably because of how much you practiced it earlier.
You see it clearly now, a mass of purple vines with human mouths wrapped around your body. It takes you a while, but you notice an opening, one mouth which is weaker than the others. You strike it lightly with your mana, causing the vines to slide off you.

Lynx stops his explanations for a split-second and looks at you, but quickly regains his composure and comes back to teaching the class.

Somehow you know what the spell was. It wasn't an attack, he was collecting information! You don't know how much he knows about what happened on the Hungry Summit, if at all, but you'll have to be extremely careful around him now.

You proceed to describe what happened during the past three days, much to her disbelief.

"Do you really expect me to believe something like that? Well then, Mr. Chosen one, why don't you show me this 'immense mana' you unlocked, hm?"

"Well, you see... It just kinda, uhh... It just kinda shrunk, I guess?"

She looks at you as if you were the dumbest person she's meet in her life

"But it's all true, I swear!"

"Pshh. Yeah, whatever."

She walks away.

The bell rings and alchemy class begins. You can't help, but feel uncomfortable around Magus Gwenith. She isn't scary like Lynx, but the cold majesty in her behavior constantly reminds you of the fact you used to be a lowly peasant. You try your best and pay attention, but it seems you just don't have what it takes, you messed it up again.

First circle magic is next. You're continuing the last lesson's topic, this time you sure as hell aren't volunteering. Lynx doesn't go out of his way to bother you either, so you just idle away.
Geography was boring too, you hope that at least meditation study will be interesting.

Now that your mana is at roughly the same level as the rest of the students, you'll probably have to do the normal meditation...

Yep, you've decided, normal meditation it is. You look up a step by step tutorial in the book, just to be sure.

Meditation for Mana gain.

1. Relax. Get in a comfortable position, eliminate distractions, clear your mind.
2. Focus on your breathing, feel the sensations that come with every breath. Feel the air as it rushes through your nostrils, feel your lungs being filled with it, feel them deflate as you let it out.
3. Mana is everywhere, in everything living and unanimated. The air is a carrier for Mana too. Imagine your body absorbing it, storing it in a vessel above your navel.
4. When you feel you've done enough for one session stop and go stretch, sitting for prolonged periods of time is unhealthy!

Hey, that seems easier than the previous method! You sit down and start breathing.
The Mana comes easily, unlike the last time you tried it. It so simple compared to the purifying method it makes you want to laugh, you barely have to focus. You wonder why did it use to be so hard? Maybe the change has something to do with the fact you renewed the collection with your inner world?

The lesson ends and you walk out feeling invigorated.

Your fight will be in fifteen minutes.

You immediately head to the appointed spot and sit down under a tree.
The weather's nice, the sun's shining and it's warm but at the same time a light breeze cools you down so it isn't too hot. The rustling of leaves to your left makes you snap out of thought.

People?

Only now you notice that a small crowd is beginning to gather around, standing in the shade of the trees or walking around. You guess it was inevitable, after all the rumors grew pretty wild, but you surely didn't expect that big of an audience. People from all classes and years were waiting to see the fight.
You notice a commotion in the crowd before you. People step to the sides, making way for Obi and his bootlickers.

"You gonna stand up, or what?"

You look up and see his ugly face in full detail.

"I guess I should. It would be bad for your reputation if I kicked your ass from down here."

He gets red with anger.

"You sure talk big for a weak fag. I thought you've run away, but I guess you have some dignity and came back so I can beat the crap out of you."

The crowd is chanting "Fight! Fight! Fight!" as you stand up.
