While you are hard at work getting the offering ready for the Grazers, your dearest mother asks that you bring her fresh water from the river.

The old clay jug is found behind your family's small hovel.

A silent shame grips your heart once you walk by this season's offering. While it's true that the Grazers are kind and won't look down on your meagre contribution, you only wish you could have done more.

Your trek to the nearest brook is uneventful. Once you arrive however, you are quickly notice the few strangers resting by the water’s edge. This is the first time you meet travellers so late in harvesting season. Stranger still : they seem to travel with a strange horned animal.

You delicately put the clay jug on the ground and crouch in the tall grass. They do not seem to have noticed you yet.

You decided to stay uninvolved. Each man, in turn, bathe themselves in the water. They seem to use white stones in that process, rubbing them all over their skin and even their ripe wheat coloured hair.

Your gaze is caught by that horned animal. Two thick dark blue horns protrude from the beast's head, heavily carved with symbols and intricate lines. Two leather bags are fixed to the animal's sides, along with clothes and blankets. And weapons. More weapons than fingers on your left hand. Some with long wooden shafts, some made of dark yellow reflective material.

Once they finish their unusual bathing ritual, they pack up and leave. Relief washes over you once the small silhouettes disappear over the horizon.

You promptly fill your clay jug and head home, head filled with imagined ills those dangerous looking warriors could accomplish.

Your mother thanks you as the water-filled jug is put down. She tells you to take the rest of the day off, that the offering will be enough for the Grazers.

You also have to decided what to do now that your day is free.

You climb on the hovel's roof, only promontory in this vast sea of white grass. The warm breeze feels good on your skin, but it also carries with it the nervousness of squall season.

One and a half flatbreads, Mother's old walking stick and a necklace given to you by the Grazers last season. That is all you could gather.

You briefly consider asking your mother to leave with you, but she never leaves the house anymore due to her knee pains. Besides, she can't stand the Elders. They get along like Gramseed oil and water. Maybe this is the reason why they do not particularly like you. Who knows.

What about Yhor? Maybe you could spend the night at his place. Yhor is weird, but his homestead is almost between yours and the Elders'.

The grass gets taller and darker in colour as you walk towards your destination. The plateau has a diversified flora, one you learned to know growing up. The sun is slowly beginning its descent into the underworld, giving the sky muted orange and lavender shades.

An acrid taste suddenly fills your mouth. You instinctively drop to the ground, holding in your breath. A plague beast. How could the hunters let one so deep into the homestead?

One hand on your mouth you try to stay immobile, like mother told you.

"Nonsense. It must have been an elk. Our hunters wouldn't have let such a dangerous beast wander this close to our homesteads. Do not think of this anymore."

The worry on this elder's face has quickly dissipated, leaving its place to mild annoyance.

"Armed outsiders are a concern however, you did good in letting us know. Tomorrow I will let the others know and we will decide on an appropriate course of action to take."

"Stop making weird noises."

The warm water is a kind blessing upon your tired flesh.

"So you're sure it was a plague beast? I mean, I trust the elders but I see no reason for you to lie about this."

His worried voice seems really far away as he rubs your back with a damp cloth piece.

"This troubles me. If there's really a plague beast near our homes and the Elders won't acknowledge it we're all in danger."

Yhor is weird for a basket weaver but at least he trusts you, which is more than you can say about the old men leading the homesteads.

As the sun rises you feel rejuvenated, Yhor's hammock was immense and intensely comfy. Putting on your tunic, you meet Yhor outside already hard at work on his baskets.

"Be careful, alright Clo?"

The walk home is uneventful and you find the hut just as you left it yesterday, with you mother inside weaving wide grass leaves in a square piece. She looks at you with a wide grin.

"Already back? Did you have fun at Yhor's?"

Of course not. You energetically explain everything that happened prior but your mother doesn't seem all that attentive to your worries. What is it with older people and not believing the young?

"In any case, I'm glad your back. Get the offerings ready for the Grazers outside and wait for them, I need to get this piece done."

You decide to wait for the Grazers a little while longer.

"What a nice girl I have." You mother smiles and slowly returns to the hut, aided by her walking stick.

Nothing comes your way but a warm breeze and the soft rustling of the grass.

Thinking of a way to thank Yhor for taking care of you last night, you take off your necklace. It was given to you by the Grazers a season ago and while not exactly the most intricate piece of jewellery you ever saw, it's still a pretty thing.

You wonder if it's too much, or if Yhor even likes jewellery.

He just might, he's a weird basket weaver.

You walk southward, the direction the Grazers usually come from.

It doesn't take long for you to reach your neighbour's hovels. Their offerings are still there, piled next to the biggest hut. It's easily thrice as big, but coming from such a large family it does not bother you all that much.

Your arrival is quickly greeted by Utho's loud voice. Mundane news are exchanged before you tackle him with the real reason of your visit.

"The Grazers? Nah, they didn't come here either. I sent my son south to Gonda's earlier today and she said they haven't showed up either. I'm thinkin' we'll get a big moot tomorrow to sort out what happened."

Worrying. It seems no one has seen the Grazers. You warn them about the plague beast.

"Bah! All three of my daughters are hunters, Clo. They would have gutted that thing long before it even reached the plateau."

He doesn't believe you. Of course.

Utho then offers cloudy tea with himself and his wife, but you turn him down saying you have other plans with Yhor. He smiles.

Yhor is already waiting at your hovel. Once he sees you he lifts his arm and waves.

"Hey Clo. Where were you? I've been stuck here with your mom. She's weird. 'kept talking about me being here for a 'round two'?"

You are quick to reprimand this weird basket weaver for dissing your mother.

"Ehr- Anyway. I brought weapons. A spear and a sling with some pebbles. This should be enough, right?" After scratching his head he offers you the sling and pebbles. While familiar with it, the weapon he gave you does feel like a toy compared to the stone tipped spear Yhor is holding.

"We should probably head to where you met this plague beast. It must have left tracks, right? It's been a day though, maybe we'd better go where it was going instead. Save some time."

You both head straight in the direction the plague beast was going. Time is important, and going back to where you encountered it would mean the beast would get farther still.

It doesn't take long to find yourself in pink grass fields. This place is fun, all sort of plants grow here and it smells fantastic. There is even this neat effect when the wind blows: the plants take this purple hue for a second.

"So, huh- the Sun Harvest Festival is coming right?"

Oh no.

"I heard Sen was going to ask you out for the big dance... Did he?"

Is he really doing this?

"Well. I think you should come with me instead, you know?"

Why now?

"We'd make great dancing partners. The ancestors would be pleased."

Is he taking this hunt seriously at all?

"And I'm better than Sen. He's really thin, that's weird."

...

"So yeah. You and me?"

"Alright, alright. I got it."

You silently hope that he will be more focused on the hunt from now on.

"...I still think that this Sen guy is weird."

Look who's talking.

--

There's no winds today, which makes this hot autumn day almost unbearable. No clouds either and even the crimson moon is out.

Ominous.

Suddenly Yhor stops dead in his tracks.

"Clo, come here." He whispers.

"...There's a weird smell in the air."

Instinctively you drop on the ground, holding your breath. That is, until you feel Yhor pulling you back up by your hair knot.

"Get up, stupid. It's not that kind of smell."

And then it hits you too.

Rotting flesh.

"Might be nothing, probably an animal carcass nearby."

He looks at you, a bit disconcerted.

"And there's still no tracks of your plague beast around here. Grass would be dead, and it's not."

>[Write-in]
>>
>>3676376
Well, might as well check out the carcass then. Maybe we'll be able to find something to make the trip worth it.

"Yeah, of course I won't touch corpses. Who does that?"

You think Yhor is bitter over the Sun Harvest festival thing. He's been irritable ever since.

Following the disgusting rot odor, Yhor leads the way through the pinkish plants. The heat and smell quickly gets to you and the basket weaver disappear ahead. Thank the ancestors, his constitution meant that he left a wide trail through the grass.

"Clo!"

His voice sounded serious. More serious than you have ever heard Yhor be. Worried, you dash on his trail.

You find him in a clearing of trampled grass and dried blood, crouched near a mangled body.

"It's Taro, Clo."

The eldest daughter of Utho and one of the homesteads' best huntress. Her corpse is violently maimed.

You look away only to notice the five other bodies laying in the clearing. All hunters. All the same fate.

In shock, you puke. Yhor isn't in much better shape. He stumbles towards you, almost dropping his spear in doing so.

"Clo, I... This- "

The basket weaver looks at you with fear in his eyes.

You run.

You run as far and fast as you can.

You run through the pink grass until the disgusting rot smell is gone.

Until the cold dead gaze of Taro leaves your mind.

Until your feet hurt.

When you come back to your senses, you are surround by pinkish blades of grass. How long have you been running, aimless? Every muscle in your legs is stinging, your lungs on fire.

But this pain cannot erase the horror. Taro, Fi, Gofa, Soto, Gar and Mug. All dead and rotting in the sun. This is something you have never experienced before, something that tears at your guts and clouds your mind.

Yhor.

You stand up, trying to find your friend.

The plague beast lets out a deafening shriek.

"CLO!"

Yhor!

The weird but brave basket weaver plunged his spear right through the beast's throat. It recoils in pain, head arched back.

Thick and pungent blood is expelled from the wound, covering everything.

"RUN!"

1. We do not know if the hunters died from this one creature, or from multiple creatures, or our unwanted guests a couple days ago.

3. If we were to "immobilize" it, we might as well KILL the damn thing to not let it bother us anymore

It just got stabbed in the throat, if we leave now it will bleed out anyway and it doesn't have the chance to immediately retaliate.
>>
>>3676859
We really can't take that risk as we are not familiar with the creature. We don't know if it can heal or survive. We have struck a mighty blow. Let's give it the double tap.

Not to mention the future ramifications of killing the thing now. If we do, we have undeniable proof for the elders and a reason to take further action in the future. If we don't defeat it here and now, the issue is not resolved, not to mention the time constraints we are probably in.

The sling spins and spins and, by promptly extending your arm, the pebble is released. With menacing whistling it strikes the beast at the base of its head, on its spine.

It quickly reels back, dousing the grass red with its nefarious blood. Seeing the beast flee, Yhor comes back to you, also covered red.

"I told you to run, idiot!"

Idiot. Look who's talking.

"My spear is still stuck in its throat." He wipes his face. "...Man, this stuff stinks real bad."

The plague beast is a dozen meters away, looking at you, its head weirdly crooked.

"That dung-pile isn't going anywhere."

You can still hear its faint whispers, and the disgusting acrid taste makes you nauseous.

You both decide to get as far as possible from the plague beast. Keeping a close on it as you walk away, you feel relieved to see that the beast doesn't move.

"I'll go pick up proofs for the Elders. They won't believe any of this otherwise."

You nod, still shaking.

"We'll meet up at the small brook we passed earlier on, alright? Wash all this blood."

You nod, still shaking.

"Hey, I'll be back soon. You'll be fine, alright?"

You nod, still shaking.

--

This blood is unbelievably gooey. You wash and wash but it takes forever to come off, and when it finally does it leaves a dark purplish stain. Even on your skin.

And while rubbing off the plague beast's blood you cry for Taro and all of the hunters. Every last one of them was your friend.

Friends you grew up with.

Hopefully you will stop crying before Yhor comes back.

"What do you mean it doesn't come off?" There's an anxious disbelief in his voice.

Yhor leaves the small curved bows next to you and jumps in the river, aggressively rubbing off the dried blood on his skin.

"W-what curse is this? It stings!"

You are crashing hard. Every time your heart beats you feel like your head is going to explode. And your arm... Yhor is wrong. It doesn't sting, it sears you to the bone.

"I went to make sure the beast was dead. It wasn't. It stood still, exactly where we left it. Its legs were flinching though."

"It will be dead by sunrise."

You plead the weird basket weaver to go home. You want to see your mother, to be in your hovel for weeks; drink warm spiced milk like when you are sick.

"Ugh. This is a fuckin' mess, Clo."

He rubs his eyes, red gooey blood still all over his face.

"You're right, let's go home. We have to tell the homesteads."
