The Emperor is dead and with him the Empire has followed. What was once a glorious civilization has splintered and crumbled. Once Noble Nobles now scramble for any inch of land they can keep underneath their thumbs, while bandits from within and invader from without threaten to tear away any last semblance of order.

You are Ursula von Sternberg, the daughter of a noble house along the Iron Coast, and you lead your own mercenary company by the name of the White Dragons. Composed of veterans you've built up over previous contracts, they're tough, rough, and you wouldn't have 'em any other way.

Leading every charge are the Blackshields, heavy infantry armored in half-plate and mail and armed with either shields and heavy blades for the frontline or wicked polearms for the supporting ranks. They fight in brutal lockstep and with a coordination that only comes from countless drills. More than one enemy assault has routed when faced with their steel and Aegrin, the man with more in common with a bear and wielding a Greataxe to match, is more than happy to test their mettle.

Providing covering fire and skirmishing are the K'Voss, light infantry armored in reinforced leathers and armed with a multitude of melee weapons, shields, and heavy crossbow. They prefer to set up above their targets and rain steel down upon their foes, but they have and will get stuck in if a force approaches their firing lines. Vahxil, a seasoned woman from the deserts of Ahkasji, is responsible for guiding their volleys to best strike at your foes.

And last are the Linebreakers, medium cavalry armored in scale mail and armed with everything from warhammers to lances. They are your personal unit, leading from the front atop your prized mount Tempest, and they know no fear in the face of your enemies. Between smashing enemy positions, cutting off retreats, and just generally being the Hammer to the Blackshield's Anvil, the Linebreakers are your rapid response.

The original QM left, so I'm poaching this for now

Currently, you're in Sekan, a middling size region composed of rolling hills and small forests, with small towns dotted around, three larger towns that you know of, and the city of Islinth as the major population center. You've recently taken one of those small towns from a raiding party of Horse Raiders, and you've learned from the captured chief that there's an even greater host operating out of one of the larger towns.

You give Aegrin a nod at this information and he, understanding your intent, steps out of the way as you approach the battered barbarian. A glob of blood is hurled at your feet as you get his attention, the man favoring you with a smile that's more red than white, "Metal Woman, you Chief ah?"

"Who is your leader, the man who controls the cohort, and what was the purpose of all this?" You motion about to the town around you that, while your men are doing their best as they loot anything left of worth to smother the flames, still is burning.

"Fun," He simply says, looking mighty pleased with himself for his current situation, "Is fun. As for Jarl..." Laughter takes him here and when he finally gets himself under control when you kick him in the ribs you're already frowning, "Won't tell unless deal."

"Deal? You are in no position to walk away here, or does Aegrin here need to remind you of that?" There's a small bead of satisfaction that you get when that smirk goes away.

"No, no walk. Want Death. Want Hermaður's Death."

Your choice?
>If it gets you information on the largest known threat in the area, you'll take the deal.

"No," Is your response, cold and final. There's a moment of puzzlement on the chief's face as you turn about on your heel and walk away.

"Metal Woman? No... Fight?" His confused welping quickly turns to shouting, ended by the sound of a Greataxe cutting through flesh and bone with ease.

As valuable as that kind of information may be, it's not worth the potential injury to yourself. Time is money, after all, and you wish to find a new employer to keep your coffers filled. Hopefully one that is more competent, this time.

Returning to the town square, you see that the wagon train that follows after your company has fully arrived, setting themselves up as best they can in the smoldering ruins. You see several Blackshields sitting around one of them as a middle-aged man and his assistants see to their wounds. Janik has been in your employ for years, his skill in field medicine invaluable in keeping your troops in health condition. Most don't bother with his name, referring to him only as Doc given that's the only reason why they spend any time around him.

Walking up, your men are quick to come to attention, including the injured. There's a twitch of irritation of Janik's face as his needlework now needs to be redone on his current patient even as you wave them back down. He's beginning again as he speaks up, not looking away from his work, "Captain, to what do I owe the pleasure?"

"How're the wounded?" You get right to the point.

"They will be fine, so long as they are kept to light work for the next day or two so the stitches can do their work."

>Blackshields Status: (95/100)

You nod, leaving the man to his business. Dusk is rapidly approaching, so you do not have the time to chat with the quiet man for now.

"Captain!" Looking over, you see some of the K'Voss that are still here walking over with several sacks of grain, "We managed to grab a few of these before shed burnt down."

Provisions are always in demand, especially while you are between contracts like this. So, despite the fact that this is a bit below your station, you nod and speak, "Good, bring it to that wagon over there and have the Quartermaster note it down."

"Yes ma'am!" They all give a quick salute as they drag them off, however one stays as the rest leave. You give him a look that gets him speaking again, "Uh, Captain, there is something else. We didn't do 'nothing about it since we were getting the grain and all, but there's someone from the village still alive. Locked up in one of the few houses still standing."

Your response?
> "Show me this house, I'll speak with them."

"Show me this house, I'll speak with them."

The K'Voss trooper snaps off another quick salute before turning and walking further into the town. By now the fires that could be brought under control have and the ones that could not have burned out. This is not the first time you've stayed in the ashen husk of a town, and likely not the last.

Which makes the dark, soot-covered stone brick home in front of you all the more interesting given how neither of the ones next to it are left. Any other observations will have to wait until later as you walk up to the sturdy door and knock heavily against it.

You don't have to wait long for a response.

"I told you to go git! Don't care what you have to say, buncha brigands trying to break into my home are gonna be in for a wallop if you try busting in my door!"

Your response?
> "I'm Ursula von Sternberg and I am no brigand. Come out and speak to me at once."

"I'm Ursula von Sternberg and I am no brigand. Come out and speak to me at once."

There's a silence that follows your words, broken only by the man walking up to the door and opening it a hair, "Von Sternberg? What's a Daughter of the Iron Coast doing with Sekan Horse Raiders?"

You don't respond, simply motioning for him to come outside.

"Oh, just give me a second," He grumbles, mostly to himself. A few moments later, the old man walks out of his home.

What you note first is that he's armed, technically, with a worn, wooden staff. White cloth has been wrapped around it in places, holding what look to be bundles of pine against the surface. Beyond that, he appears to be simply an old man, with a weathered face and dull clothes that speak of long years of travel. Still, for all of what's before you something just does not sit right with you.

He glances over at the K'Voss trooper, who thankfully holds off on drawing a weapon, before looking back at you, "So, what's ya deal then lass? You certainly ain't one of Lord Kubin's knights and yer too well dressed to be garrison. C'mon, speak up, ya mercenary, conqueror, rebel, or what?"

"Mercenaries, the White Dragons to be specific," You doubt his words held malice beyond the bluntness of a man well on in his years, but you narrow your eyes and put a bit of steel into your voice regardless, "What is your name?"

"Victor Weidmann," The man runs a hand through his gray stubble.

You note the quickly darkening sky above you all and consider your next words.
> "No matter how sturdy your homestead, this town is beyond rebuilding. We're leaving in the morrow, and if you're able to make the journey you are welcome to join our march." You'll drop Victor off at the next major town you come to.
> "Until their host has been broken, no town is safe from Sekan Horse Raiders. Join my company, and you'll have safety greater than any Lord can promise." If you're not wrong, this man is also from the Iron Coast and has the look of an Engineer like yourself. It's a rare find, one you refuse to let out of your grasp.
> "Well, Victor, my company will be gone by tomorrow. Good luck with whatever it is you choose to do." You've no idea what this man is truly capable, and you've no intention of endangering your company with random strangers.

"Until their host has been broken, no town is safe from Sekan Horse Raiders. Join my company, and you'll have safety greater than any Lord can promise." Perhaps you're begin somewhat heavy-handed in your approach, but from his name you've a hunch that he's an Engineer from the Iron Coast like yourself. An unbelievably rare occurrence this far into Sekan, but one that you refuse to let slip easily.

Victor considers your words for almost a minute in abject silence. You don't know what it is that informs his decision, but you have the feeling that it mainly stems from the smoking ruins around you all, "Yer a direct lady, I can appreciate that. As for your company, might be something interesting to do. Not like a quiet retirement's really been workin' out for me."

As he goes back into his homestead, likely to gather his belongings, you turn to the K'Voss trooper still standing beside you, "When he comes back out, escort him to the Registrar."

A simple salute is all you need for confirmation, after which you turn and walk back to your main camp. It's already dark enough to require torches when you return, idly noting the collection of Raider's head that now decorate what's left of the villager's defenses; highest among them is the Chief's, placed so it's easily in view to any coming and going.

You also note that Vahxil has yet to return, though it is possible that she's simply found a good place to hunker down with her K'Voss for the night. Wouldn't be the first time she's done as such.

There's also the not so small matter of where you'll be heading tomorrow. Victor sounded like he knew the local area and lord, so perhaps once he's been initiated you could chart your next destination. Your coffers won't last forever unless you take a commission.

Lastly, you could head to sleep. There's good odds you won't be able to do so in the near future, as the threat of night raids and strategic meetings will be burning through your reserves if you do take a commission.

What now?

Considering your troops are Veterans, whenever they set up for camp they make entrenchments. Now, entrenchments that are more sophisticated than a trench and some stakes and ones that are designed to withstand repeated assault would require your personal guidance, or Victor's, but those are not necessary at the moment.

>>3666804
>>3666787
>>3666906
>>3667076

Right now your primary concern is finding your next commission. You've already got an enemy to fight in the Sekan Horse Raiders, but the next time you go to battle against them you'd rather be getting paid to do so. So, with that in mind, you head over to the Quartermaster and requisition a map and Victor after he's finished signing off on his own contract.

Back in your personal command tent, you roll out the rough map of the local area atop a portable table. Turning to Victor, you motion towards the illustrated environment spread out before you, "The Quartermaster is decent enough at making maps, but we're new to this region. Would you know of the major lords or any other individuals who'd be capable of contracting our company?"

The old man looks over the rough drawing, partially in disdain and partially in thought, "Lord Kubin is the Lord Protector of Islinth, but who bloody well knows how they're doing with all this chaos. From what I've heard, those damn barbarian have taken Zackasky to the West. It's got the sole bridge that crosses the Arrowhead Run - solid thing that is, stone reinforced with iron so good luck collapsing it - and connects the Steppes to the rest of Sekan. As for the other two remaining towns, Capol and Levola, I don't know a damn thing about the men that run 'em. Capol's an agricultural hub, with the richest fields in Sekan, while Levola is built on top of the only quarry in Sekan. But at this point, they could be in ashes themselves."

> Cont.
>>
>>3668743

You thank Victor for his time and dismiss him. Mulling over the map, weighing the options, you eventually come to the decision to head:
> To Islinth, the trading certer of Sekan. This Lord Kubin is likely to have that combination of on-hand wealth and desperation that is the perfect environment for you to bring your company into. And if he isn't alive, there's bound to be a power struggle at hand; yet another perfect environment.
> To Capol, the breadbasket of Sekan. If you manage to work out a commission with whoever is in charge there, you could guarantee rations-and-a-half for your men. Morale, already above average, would be increased by the abundance of food.
> To Levola, the industrial hub of Sekan. You'd bet they've got a stockpile of materials built up with the breakdown of trade following the Empire's collapse. All that equipment, more than enough to upgrade your already well-equipped troops, is a bounty just waiting to be bargained for. Or claimed.
> Away from Sekan. This land is already screwed, what with the Horse Raiders running a muck and the clear lack of organized leadership on the part of the Lords. You'll take your White Dragons somewhere else, even if it means running low on your coffers while you travel to another region in search of work.

True, but your family is really only known in the Iron Coast region. If you were to endear yourself to the residents of Capol, you’d receive a bonus towards convincing them to accept your rule, on top of your existing Silver Tongue bonus, but at the moment most individuals would view you as an outsider leading a company of highly trained soldiers arriving at their front door.

> Capol, the breadbasket of Sekan, is your next destination.
> Whether you are going there as mercenaries, heros, or conquerors will be decided in time.

When the next dawn arrives, the sun illuminates the sight of your entire camp already packed and in formation. Wagons to the rear, Blackshields at the front, K’Voss to the sides, and Linebreakers spread out evenly among them all.

You yourself are at the head of the column, riding Tempest who hums with quiet anticipation of what’s to come. With a nod from Aegrin and Vahxil, who had returned late last night, you raise your voice, “Attention!”

The sound of your full company snapping to alert ripples across the flat grassland. Every last one of them looks at you, some grinning some stoic, with the kind of loyalty that cannot be bought.

“White Dragons! We march North to Capol!” You raise your hand as you speak, pointing out across the green plains.

Guiding Tempest, you set off away from the blackened husk behind you. You set off towards Silver and Glory, with the best damn subordinates you can ask for.

The hours pass by easily, the steady beat of your men marching and the endless sea of green around you nearly lure you into a stuppor. Still, as you’re riding at the head of the column it would be the height of idiocy to be lax. It is a good thing you’re alert, as the next rolling hill you traverse isn’t as empty as the rest.

“Bandits on the hill!” You call out as you spot them, over a score of broken men forming the parimeter of some encampment alone. They’re clad in decent armor and armed with spears, but what catches your interest is that they aren’t Horse Raiders themselves, despite a group of them attempting to circle around the hills to your flank.

> At least 1 Unit of Deserter Bandits manning hilltop encampment

"Blackshields, charge their camp! Linebreakers, intercept those riders! K'Voss, cover us!"

Even above the calls to arms, the singing of steel, and crunch of boots on grass, your voice rings out crystal clear. Your mounted Linebreakers are the first to act, breaking off from the rest of the force and regrouping even as they head straight for the Horse Raiders on your right. The K'Voss are the next, scrambling up the nearest inclines they can make it to before beginning to set up. Shields are planted, heavy crossbows are strung and loaded, and Vahxil draws her saber and holds it aloft, eyes peering out onto the battlefield waiting for the perfect moment to unleash deadly steel rain.

You watch as the Linebreakers and the Raiders both adjust for a charge, but it is at this exact moment that the Ahkasji woman flicks her saber. Half the K'Voss let loose their crossbows, and the sound sends a chill down your spine. Most of your riders ignore the noise, but others peer up quickly to see the volley arcing over them. The Sekan Horse Raiders, armed and armored for quick skirmishing and pillaging, run head first into that deadly hail. The men and horses of their first ranks die in droves to that single piece of covering fire, tumbling to the ground right as the next rank gets to them. The result is catastrophic for the Raiders, and when you turn away to focus on more pressing matters they're all stuck in the dirt when the Linebreakers decent upon them in a flurry.

Aegrin looks over you with a grin as you ride up alongside his Blackshields, already in ranks and stomping their way up the hill. The defenders should have the advantage here, as heavy infantry normally struggle up inclines, but you hear that telltale whisper as the rest of the K'Voss unleash their bolts. You urge Tempest on with your legs as you strap on your shield and lower your lance, the powerful horse beneath you snorting as he barrels up the hillside. The enemy's perimeter has collapsed just from the volley alone, so you waste no time punching a hole in what's left of their defense.

You single out a man bellowing orders and throwing the men around him back into position. One of those men tries to warn him of your presence, but the ex-Sergeant has enough time to turn towards you before your lance punches straight through his chest.

You continue your charge, Tempest crushing another man under hoof as you let your momentum carry you to the side. Those remaining watch you fearfully, spears gripped in hand, but that's the last mistake they make as the Blackshields sprint the rest of the way up the hill, embolden by your display. Aegrin laughs hardily as he and his men tear the last of this unit apart like wet paper. Those that managed to avoid a grizzle fate break and run.

> 1 Unit of Deserter Bandits has been Routed!
> 1 Unit of Sekan Horse Raiders has been Annihilated!

Circling back around to meet up with Aegrin, you frown as you note the size of this camp is far larger than you would have anticipated. While their equipment is rough and rusted in some cases, you note that all the bandits you've slain were definitely part of an army at one point prior.

Forming up with the rest of the Blackguard, you watch as almost three score of men have gotten ready, several ranks of spearmen clutch their weapons nervously as they watch you.

> 3 Units of Deserter Bandits uncovered!

The Blackguard do much the same, only without the nerves. They wait with baited breath on your next command.

> Ursula: 17+3+1 (1 Allied Unit Routed)= 21 vs nat 1, nat 1, and 16 (Fucking hell)

Despite the superior quality of your troops, you’d prefer to not engage a force triple your number. At least, not without your Linebreakers making a mess of their flank. So you have Tempest sedately trot to the front of your Blackshield’s line.

Raising your lance, you motion for Aegrin to wait as you shout, “You there, Broken men! You’ve seen what I’ve done to your compatriots, and if you don’t surrender I’ll have you all broken again before me as well!”

Murmurs run up and down their lines, you can easily see their shifting glances looking at one another to see if anyone will take your offer.

That is, until a man in much more we’ll-maintained armor pushes his way forwards, “Get back into formation, you idiots! We’ve survived worse than this, don’t lose your bowels over one woman in plate!”

“No fekking way,” Surpringly, a different man in armor similar to the one you just killed speaks up, shaking his head, “We’ve survived this long by running away, boss. Ain’t getting out of this any other way I’d guess.” The Sergeant throws down his spear and his entire Unit follows suit.

> 1 Unit of Deserter Bandits have Surrendered!

“I’m sorry Lieutenant, but I’m not dying here either,” Another Sergeant speaks up, looking embarrassed but not prideful enough to refuse the out you’ve given. He and his Unit also drop their weapons.

> 1 Unit of Deserter Bandits have Surrendered!

This Lieutenant, on the other hand, is furious for a moment, shooting that glare of his at you before turning around, “Anyone who isn’t a coward on me. We’re leaving, the rest of you can get picked at by the crows for all I care.”

> 1 Unit of Deserter Bandits (with Lieutenant) are Retreating!

Aegrin, watching this display along with you, chuckles with mirth. You have to stop yourself from doing the same.

You watch as the Lieutenant and his personal men form up, retreating with a sense of order that only comes from many months of martial training. As they march down the backside of the hill, you ride Tempest up to where the two groups of men look at you nervously. Some eye their weapons for a brief moment, but the two Sergeants are quick to keep their men in line.

“You all made the correct decision,” You speak up as you pass them all, raising your lance and pointing it towards the fleeing Unit, “And now you will see why.”

Vahxil, already having repositioned her K’Voss to another hill, meets your gaze and nods at the signal you give her. She raises her saber once more, both of her platoons forming a staggered firing line, and swipes it down. The sound of all those heavy crossbows being unleashed at once rips through the air - you note several of the men that are now being corralled away from their weapon visibly pale - and you follow those dark arcs as they make their deadly journey across the battlefield.

The tightly packed formation of spearmen is decimated by the K’Voss barrage, with the first set of bolts landing right on top of the Lieutenant’s position.

> I forgot that the K’Voss ignore 2 Armor, so that poor schmuck is dead as can be.

And just like that, their orderly retreat turns into a full on rout. Clumps of men break off in chunks and sprint for all they’re worth with your Linebreakers hot on their heels. Except for one group in particular, which immediately turns and does their damnest to keep the charging cavalry at bay. It doesn’t work, naturally, as they’re smashed apart in moments, but the momentum behind the charge is gone.

> 1 Unit of Deserter Bandits have Routed!

“You fekking idiot, El Te,” Guiding Tempest back around, you look over at the first Sergeant to surrender. He’s shaking his head in disappointment, watching what just occurred to the very end, “Toldja that ego was gonna getcha killed.” Brushing that off, he turns to you and Aegrin in turn, who has finished moving the rest of the prisoners besides the two Sergeants befor you down.

Below the hill, you hear your Linebreakers turning about and returning, as well as the K’Voss marching up.

“Now what?” The other Sergeant questions.

Despite the fact that you unstrap your shield and shoulder your lance, you don’t dismount. The displays of your men may have been intimidating on their own, but you’re not certain yet what these two may think of you, “I believe I am the one who should be asking you that. Who are you all? And why have you decided to ally yourselves with Sekan Horse Raiders?”

One of the men scowls as the other responds, “We were once part of the Caedian army, on garrison in Islinth. When the Emperor died, our old General ordered the battalion to follow him back into the heartlands. He spout off some crap about ‘restoring order’ and such, but we could see that he was in it for the power grab. LT Russ convinced us to desert and we followed him. Did a couple odd jobs until we started working for those Raiders. Never liked ‘em, but Russ said silver was silver in these times.” He shrugs, as if that’s all he knows.

“Ain’t a problem no more,” The first looks over to where the corpses of said Raiders are still cooling and spits. With that accent, you figure he’s likely from then Svartel Mountains, but you’re not sure of more than that, “You ‘n ya boys took care of ‘em.”

“That we did. And so now we’re just left with you sorry lot,” It might be playing up the theatrics a hair, but you let hints of distain color your tone. These men may have once been soldiers of the greatest armies in the world, but months of long roads, cold and sparse food, and banditry have destroyed their morale, “What can you offer me?”

“We’re soldiers, what the fekk else are we gonna do?” The crude Sergeant responds, but his fellow none too subtly steps on his toes.

“What my compatriot here meant to say is that we would be more than happy to go our seperate ways here. Or, we could enter the service of your mercenary company for a reasonable period of time,” The nerves are clear in this man’s eyes, but he’s still got a steady voice to his credit.

"Tell your men to collect their equipment and be ready for inspection in five minutes. You wish to join our ranks? Show me what true Caedians can do."

While the two Sergeants don't salute you as they scramble towards their men, you don't bother commenting on it. Instead, you return your lance to its place attached to your saddle before smoothly swinging off of Tempest. Aegrin regards you with a half-cocked grin and a raised eyebrow, "Can't say I was expecting this, boss."

"I would like to know what exactly this is in the first place, Captain," Vahxil regards you coolly as she approaches, her two platoons of K'Voss marching behind her.

You just motion towards the ex-Caedian soldiers as they form lines and pass spears down them, forming ranks as they do so, "We've done well for ourselves with just the Blackshields as our front-line troopers, but in the future we will need more than just one platoon's worth of men as our front. They may even impress me at some point, who knows?"

What you don't say, though you imagine that they got the message anyways, is that these men could be used a bit more freely than your core troops if the need was to arise.

When the five minutes are up, you begin your walk down the ranks of troops, with Aegrin and Vahxil flanking you.

The two Sergeants both stand and the front of their platoons, and when you get to them they wordlessly slam their spears butt-first into the ground. Their men do the same a split-second after, the sound mostly in unison as it echoes across the hilltop. Perhaps you've underestimated these men, as it is quite clear to you now that despite the rust and muck, there is still steel beneath it all here.

Not that you'd trust them with the kind of jobs you send the Blackshields in on, but maybe they won't immediately break at the first signs of battle.

> 2 Units of Caedian Deserter Pikemen (Spearmen)(Experienced/Weary) (100/100)

> While well trained and partially experienced in real combat, these men have had their morale eroded by the last few months. Once they have gotten back onto their feet, these Pikemen will be a powerful addition to your Company. For now, you will need to be careful in how their are deployed.

As you walk down the lines, you note several of the soldiers appear to have weathered their recent hardships better than the others. Whether they're of stronger will, better training, or just luckier than their fellow soldiers, you do not know. But if you were to cherry pick the men, perhaps you could form a single platoon of their best and let the rest go on their way.

Your decision?

Looking upon the men before you, you can see plain as day that they will need work. This does not bother you, however, as there was a time that your troops did not have the steely resolve that they have now. You remember your first time commanding, the little mistakes and missteps that added up. The rough fights, the hard marches, and the dead buried along the way.

You turn your attention to the two Sergeants, "Your names?"

They both snap to attention, the older one speaking first, "Volk, ex-Sergeant of the 29th Caedian Pikemen".

"Marcus, ex-Sergeant of the 29th Caedian Pikemen," The younger reports as well, his smooth voice lacking any trait of nervousness.

"Consider yourselves both Sergeants once more, in the service of the White Dragons. Tell your men to gather their supplies and prepare to march." Turning around, you easily mount Tempest and raise your voice for the rest of your Company to hear, "White Dragons! Back in formation!"

Figured this would be a good place to lay out your current troops. I've been going through the first thread with more care than I first did and realized that I made a few mistakes in terms of unit characteristics. The mistakes wouldn't have changed the results of this combat, but it'll be good for you all, and for my sake as well, to gather up all the details, as well as my own adjustments to the system, into one place for ease.

Company Composition:
> Blackshield Halberdiers (Spearmen) (Veterans) (100/100) (+2 Armor and +2 Bonus against Cavalry)
- By the time you make it to Capol, the wounded Blackshields will have recovered. I will go into what sending wounded Units into battle does down below.
> K'Voss Sharpshooters (Skirmishers/Crossbowmen) (Veterans) (200/200) (+2 Bonus and 1 Armor Pen while firing Heavy Crossbows)
- I mistakenly had the K'Voss down as 2 AP before, but even with it adjusted that LT would have still been killed by the volley.
- I'm also adding in a Reloading factor to these guys, as they being able to fire every single round would be a bit OP at the moment. They are still able to move while Reloading, they just cannot fire their Crossbows that round. As I did in this battle, you can designate the two platoons of K'Voss to fire on different targets, but you can also set them up to alternate fire at the same target.
> Linebreakers (Heavy Cavalry) (Veterans) (50/50) (+3 Bonus to Enemies in Defensive Formations. Causes Enemies to Rout.)
- Realized that I had these guys down as (100/100) instead of (50/50), but it hasn't been relevant for them yet.
- With regards to the Out of Position factor in combat, Linebreakers will, within reason, always be able to re-position within a turn.
> Caedian Pikemen (Spearmen) (Experienced/Weary) (200/200) (No Bonuses yet, due to Low Morale and Poor Equipment)
- Depending on how they do in combat and your interactions with Volk and Marcus, I will let you all decide on what type of Bonuses these Units end up with.

Wounded/Low Morale Units:
> When a Unit takes Casualties or Fatalities, this naturally can cause disruptions to their fighting prowess. At the start of combat, I roll a 1dX, with X being the maximum number of troops in said platoon. If I roll above the first value - for example your Blackshields were (95/100) going into this battle so I would have had to roll above 95 - associated with that Unit, the Unit will have a penalty. This depends on just how degraded the Unit is, but in taking the Blackshields example from above, if I had rolled above a 95 I would have had a single re-roll to use against them at any point in the battle. This penalty can get severe, up to the point where you have to re-roll ALL Successes in combat, but that is in extreme cases and I will warn you all before deploying a Unit that Depleted.
> When a Unit has Diminished Morale, this naturally can impact their fighting prowess. During Combat, if this Unit takes Casualties/Fatalities, you all have to roll a Morale check. These are done with 1d20, and the DCs are based on the Unit's Rank. The Caedian Pikemen, with a Rank of Experienced, have a DC of 10. Units that fail their Morale check will Rout. Veteran Troops are Immune to Morale checks.

Leader Casualties:
> As displayed with the poor, poor LT, a heavy attack (A difference of 10 or Higher) against a Unit will force the Leader, if applicable, to roll 1d10. A roll of 1-(Unit's Armor Value) will result in No Injury, a Roll of one higher-(Unit's Armor Value x2) will result in a Injury, and one higher than that-10 will result in a Mortal Wound. Leaders with Mortal Wounds will not be able to continue leading their Unit, and will die shortly after Combat unless they have access to medical treatment. Even then, they will not walk away unscathed.
> For the purposes of Units with AP, such as your K'Voss, that reduction is added after the Armor Value is doubled.

I think that covers the bulk of what is important, but feel free to ask questions if you have them.

It's another day of marching before you spot the outskirts of Capol. The wide open grasslands that you've been thoroughly trampling over suddenly transforms into fields of amber grain dotted occasionally by wooden windmills. Victor impressed upon you just how important this town is in terms of sheer agricultural capacity, but seeing it with your own eyes brings new perspective to that fact.

Your presence does not go unnoticed, as you watch several farmers do their best to bolt for the town proper. Some of your fellow Linebreakers give you a look, questioning if you want them to cut them off, but you wave them back to ease. You still haven't fully decide on how you wish to handle this, so there's no point in being too aggressive.

The White Dragons continue their march down the sole road leading to Capol, making it to the first of those windmills before you see what response the residents of this town have. A wooden barricade has been moved to block off the road, with a line of men wielding pitchforks manning it. You almost laugh at the sight but despite the complete lack of armor there's a hard, grim look on these men's faces. Not one of them so much as quivers as you approach.

A younger man than some of his fellows, with the tall build and tanned skin that comes from years of working in fields, steps forwards and yells out, "A'ght! You lot, not one step more! Turn your pillagin' arses 'round and don't never come back!"

Aegrin stifles a chuckle at the man's bold words while Vahxil gives you a single raised eyebrow. You can't see how Sergeant Volk and Sergeant Marcus react, as they're with their platoons, but you can't imagine they're taking this very seriously.

Your response?

"We are the White Dragon Mercenary Company, and we hear you have a problem with Sekan Horse Raiders. Any interest in hiring?" You voice easily travels across the decent distance between yourself and the militiamen before you. The young man narrows his eyes, but you note that the others beside him are muttering among themselves. It seems your guess was right on the nose, even if it was a rather easy one; there's no way that those Raiders haven't targeted such a rich source of food.

Eventually, they lower their weapons slightly. That same young man speaks up once more, "A'ight! You the leader then? C'mon in then, my father'll wanna speak to ya. Ya lackies stay here though ya hear?"

"Loud and clear," Urging him on, you ride Tempest up to the barricade as it is moved aside. While you're confident enough in your martial prowess, especially against a bunch of upstart militiamen, you're not stupid enough to throw away the advantage a mount gives you. Even though a line of spearmen should be fatal to a lone rider, they are the ones to give your prized horse weary looks as you pass them.

The young man leads you into Capol proper, which is hardly any distance from the blockade itself. There's another windmill along the road before the fields end and the town begins. There are few people about, likely due to your presence, but from what you can see you choose wisely to come here. While every major town such as this one has at least one stone storage for grain, Capol boasts half a dozen from what you can see alone. Between that and the grain still growing around, they're bound to be up to their necks in product.

Eventually, you come up to a larger house than the rest where the young man stops and motions to a post to tie Tempest to, "'Ere we are. Get yer horse settled in, I've already sent word ahead so my father's expecting ya."

You oblige him, not all that concerned about an attempt on your horse. He's been trained to brutally maul anyone who attempts to ride him other than yourself, after all.

The house is simple, but you can see the tell-tale signs of nobility scattered throughout. The carpeted floors, the fine tableware from Caedia tucked away in glass cabinets, a tasteful family portrait above a fireplace in the sitting room you now wait in; it all reminds you of your old family home. You cease that line of thinking before it progresses any further.

An older man walks in a few minutes after you do, his fine clothes dyed a modest brown with the material being the only true distinguishing feature of them and his hair an even spread between brown and gray, and sits across from you, "I'll cut straight to the point, you're a mercenary looking to be hired, correct?"

You straighten your posture and look directly back at him as you respond, "I am."

"Good," He motions to the door, where his son walks in with a sheet of paper and a quill, "I've hired mercenaries in the past, so I'm aware of the usual demands; a daily wage, rewards for victories, and rights to equipment obtained fighting. In exchange, your Company will fight with all effort and valor to defend Capol from any enemy that would threaten it so long as the contract stands. Is this acceptable to you?"

Your response?
> "The payment is fine as it is." Even during these chaotic times, Silver is Silver. You'll be refilling your coffers and you'll be able to make purchases in the future.
> "I'd request that the payment be made in grain and grain-products." With the latest addition of two new platoons to the Company, you need to ensure that your larder is up to the task of feeding those many bellies. Besides, nothing boosts morale like fresh bread and an extra serving of alcohol/

And:
> "The terms are fine as they are." You'll double check the written Contract, but he's right in that this is the standard.
> "I'd prefer that we..." (Write in)

> "The payment is fine as it is." Even during these chaotic times, Silver is Silver. You'll be refilling your coffers and you'll be able to make purchases in the future.
> "I'd prefer that we also get paid in extra rations for my men. As I was entering the town, I notice that this town possesses an abundance of food. With the collapse of trade in the empire, it would be a waste to see them left to rot or destroyed by pests."
>"I also request that my men be given good, comfortable quarters inside this town and a house in the noble/central/this/your (delete as appropriate) part of the town for myself or my officers."

If you want to work out a ratio of Silver to Grain for your payment that’s fine as well. Just don’t expect to get the full benefits of either if you do.

You could also haggle for better rewards once you’ve proven yourselves, so keep that in mind.

That's fine. I don't know what the proper ratio should be but I guess enough extra so that our men will never hunger while in town.

We can stock up on food, then move to another town to stock up on money.

heck we can even sell surplus food at the town with money since I doubt much food shipments are getting in.

Wow, what are the odds of that

Three of the same number on a d20 is 1/400 odds. I’ll have to think of something for this in the next update.
