The lone surviving member of an interstellar hive-mind is stranded in a galaxy far far away.
______

The fall... was silence. Silence was death... Death, destruction, and pain. You had never felt such pain, before.
It was a pain beyond the vacuum, beyond the scorching radiation that tore apart your genetic library, than the warping of intense forces and biotic attacks. Your mind, a piece of the hive with a copy of it's history hard-coded inside of it, could not liken this sensation to anything else.

The pain of twenty-four million bonds broken by the enemy's eldritch technology, the pain of warp shields going out of alignment and ripping tens of thousands apart, the pain of hundreds slipping into the metaphysical realm your hive used to travel.
Your hive-group was destroyed in transit, because it never considered the possibility that others could navigate the Sliph-realm better than you. But something could, and it preyed on you all... But that was long ago. Too long...
>>
>>3650322

You had drifted un-noticed by the strange entities that destroyed your kind, for untold millenia in a realm where time and space slip free of reality's constraints.
Then, you exited that realm through happenstance. It was your arrival on this new planet, that awoke you. You can't remember the order of events of your past properly, but what truly matters, is the now, and one thing you know is that you are a Zenonymous Identity, part of the great Zenon Hive-Mind. And this world will be the place of your revival...

You emerge from the charcoal scraps of your hibernation pod, your dozens of clawed limbs pierce into the soft soil, tearing through leaves and branches alike.

Small tongues emerge from your mouth, tasting bits of the detritus on the ground as the cartilageous barbs pull clumps further into your body... Plant matter that falls within desirable sustenance ranges... a good number of similarities with what you are used to.

The bacteria is diverse. You go ahead and begin replicating some that are in the process of digesting the local plant life, to increase the sustenance you can gain from it...

You seem to be in a biome consistent with 'terrestrial temperate forest', though you're receiving unpleasant spikes of non-electromagnetic radiation from... everything. You can't actually categorize it as a particle or wave. It seems to have a more complex and alien nature than you can even begin to understand.
>>
>>3650329
You curl your body around one of the largest trees in your area, wrapping yourself to distribute weight as you climb over a hundred feet.

Looking around, you find a mountain, a river, white smoke, and more trees. Many many more trees...

>Begin eating enormous quantities of foliage. It's a poor, but near infinite, source of biomass.
>Investigate the white smoke. There's a fair chance of some level of civilization there. And that means suitable hosts for subjugation and propogation of the species.
>Hunt for animal flesh. It's a great, but typically dangerous, source of biomass and research projects.
>Go climb the mountain to get a better look at all the land around you.
>Focus on the strange, twisted, and damaged portions of your mind and memories. You might be able to parse together something more useful than a mere name...

Resource Types

Biological Mass - The most versatile resource, will be used to grow/convert every Zenon unit and hive-structure and implement every upgrade.

Biotic Fluid - Used when creating more intelligent and cognizant members of the hive or upgrades to mental attributes or in behavioral research.

Genetic Stock - Used to create hero units, new upgrades, and implement humongous changes to the hive. Very hard to harvest, as it is units of interesting, viable, and useful mutated genetic information.

Growth Catalysts - Used to increase the speed of research, upgrades, upgrade implementation, unit creation, structure production, etc. It makes things grow fast.

You descend from the trees with a decision made. The most important thing, at the moment, is chasing down some biomass. You weave between tress with your sinuous body, claws and spiked legs carrying you forwards with surprisingly little noise as your bulk shifts and stretches in line with your movements.
As a research Identity for the hive, your body is quite large and can serve as a minor storage point for hive resources. This adaptation was mainly used for the sake of keeping experimentation materials on hand, but in an emergency situation like this, it's going to be your lifeline...

_ _ _ _ _

You make your way to the river, aware that standard terrestrial bioforms require large quantities of water to maintain optimal states of operation. You were correct, and saw a small array of creatures. The ones that drew your eyes the most, though, were the horned quadruped with a large berth of space around it. None of the other animals seemed interested in being within a hundred feet of it. You wondered why that was, sure, it was large for a terrestrial beast. But that's not reason enough to fear it so muc-*Skreeeeeach*

A monstrous set of black tentacles shoots from the water that the horned beast had just placed his muzzle against, they wrapped around its neck and horns as it bucked in surprise and bared it's fangs. The large quadruped pulled the screeching attacker partially out of the water, and you were impressed by the creature that was revealed.
The drinking animals scattered as the beast and the river monster fought. The black bodied monster was slowly dragged further and further out of the water, even as the horned beast's body sizzled with acidic saliva. Bellows and shrieks filled the river-bank as the blade-like horns finally tore into the extended throat of the river monster. Blackish liquid and putrid brown blood gushed over the head of the horned beast, sending it into a pained rage as it was blinded and further injured.

The river monster tried to coil the beast up, but they tore into each-other at too frenzied a pace to succeed in such a maneuver. And after almost an hour of this deadlock, both creatures fell to the ground, exhausted or dying from their wounds...

You watched them for a moment, waiting to see if one would gather the stamina necessary to recuperate and finish the other off... but nothing happens.
You step out from the tree line where you'd been hiding the bulk of your body in some wild hedges. You cross the distance from the edge to the clearing in a quick scuttle of sorts, and rip your way into the quadruped's throat. Its blinded eyes go wide as it tries to gore you with it's broken horns, but you hold it still as your plethora of barbed and cartilaginous tongues tear apart arteries and wrap around it's spine. With a bit of effort, you manage to shatter the bones of its neck, severing the spinal cord and rendering your prey helpless as it bled to death, blind and suffering... Well, perhaps you did it a favor, after all, you did prevent it from feeling the acid eroding precious flesh.

You sample it, and find it is nothing special. It's just an intense blend of enzymes and intense gastric acids. Your natural resistances are more than enough to deal with it so you waste no time in moving to the much larger prey... It doesn't have any obvious weakpoints. No spinal chord, no head or eyes. But you decide to move to the place where the insides are extended from, and saw at the flesh with some of your tail. You find the flesh is soft, but the muscles beneath it are like corded steel. You still manage to get through it, but it took you a minute or so, and it gave you a new appreciation for the horns on the beast who damaged it so much...

Figuring the monster is disabled, you move on to feasting...

_ _ _ _ _

Your bloated, maggot like flesh has swelled further and further as thousands of pounds of chitin, meat, and bone went through your body as you collected only the biomatter you found useful for the purposes at hand.

But an unfortunate situation arose. You managed to collect more resources than you can hold.

Your capacity is ten units of resources, and yet, you have 16. Ten biomass and six biotic fluid...

Decide what you want to carry, what you do not will be wasted...

You left the clearing and searched for an area to create a safe resource deposit... After an hour of searching, you came across a jagged spire of rock, within it were a plethora of caverns and caves. The craggy surface resembled the cracked earth of a dry swamp.
You chose a cavern which was too small for any territorial predators to desire, and began the process...

After regurgitating the required biomass, you shape and prime it with chemicals generated deep inside of you, shaping the waiting flesh into a small, autonomous group of nerve tissue and muscles.
It rapidly draws from the remaining biomass, you provide, to tunnel into and expand beneath the ground of the cave. The rock floor slowly distorting as rocks and meaty roots are pressed against each other, grinding and competing for space as the floor strains and buckles in a few places.
Finally, the resource deposit completes its growth. You deposit the five units of biotic fluid held in your reservoir, and enjoy the sensation of being light and empty again.

Honestly, carrying around a few thousand pounds of stuff is difficult on a physically weak Zenon like yourself. You're pretty eager to get a workforce up and running. But for now, you curl around the small port for the node and sleep comfortably on the warm flesh you've missed for so long. You sleep soundly, with the presence of simple minded happiness surrounding you, as the node thoughtlessly appreciates you for all your hardships.

Fear... is not an emotion the hive is familiar with. You may have a fractured and incomplete understanding of your past and the hive's memories, but you have never. never feared something.

No matter what forces arrayed themselves against your kind, there was always a hidden hive, always another Zenon to carry on your memory.
On this world, in this moment, you became the first Zenon to ever feel fear, and it's changed you.

Your mind is sharper, even hours after the beast left, your eyes look at the world with a certain kind of desperation...
'I need... more power.'
This world can end you. It can end thousands of years of history in your hive, and millions of years of history that resulted in your race as you know it.

But How?

You found yourself experiencing something strange after the beast had left. You hadn't paid much attention to anything outside of your own thoughts, your own feelings and superficial observations of the strange changes your fear had set in motion within you... Now, you realize it's been three cycles of day and night and your metabolism reminds you that you are not being tended to by a hive, and must feed yourself if Zenno will continue to live for the forseeable future.
You haven't had enough time to reason everything out, but now that you've been shocked back to consciousness, a strange energy possesses you. It's a kind of drive and motivation, beyond the shambling directives of your broken genetic library... You want to do something.

I don't think fortifications are really going to be super useful atm...

How about-
1. Get Hatchery
2. Get Drones via Hatchery
3. Gather Biomass w/Drones, make more Hatcheries
4a. Save up enough for a Nexus
4b. While this is going on, research Camouflage (gotta hide from the giant monsters) and Burrowing (nests and fortifying), and maybe the weird energy if we have time
5. Build Nexus
6. Sort through the stuff we got from the Nexus and see where to go from there.

Above roll is collected biomass, from plant life. Remember it is the safest, easiest and least efficient form of obtaining biomass for the hive.

Also, attached is a direct comparison of you to a full grown worker drone.
>>
I think we should research the strange energy as soon as possible. The old hive was strong but it fell, old tech is not the way. New tech is our salvation. Onward towards evolution brothers!
>>
>>3653056
True, but the Old Tech will have some nice bases to springboard off of and some stuff we probably won't think of by ourselves. I'd rather have a prebuilt Hydralisk to build off of than try and make our own from scratch, for example.

You leave your crag and walk over the broken mound of splintered wood covered in dried blood. A large part of you is quite annoyed that you lost so much time, because after trying to obtain some genetic information from it, you discover it had degraded too far. 'I could have done something with that thing's blood... it's unfortunate, but ultimately inconsequential. We shall surpass it in time.'
With that thought in mind, you move a decent distance away from your resource node and begin consuming absurd amounts of foliage.
Entire berrybush fields, patches of young hedges, saplings three times as tall as you are long... You chew through thousands of pounds of mediocre foliage that your new gut bacteria is constantly tweaked to better absorb useful biomass from.

In the end, it took you a few hours to get half the biomass you need to gestate a Worker Drone. With an untillegible sigh, you prepare to continue the tedious manual endeavor of collecting biomass.

>Buckle in, one week. That's all its going to take. Then you can push this all on someone else...
> Ehhhh... You're gonna hunt for a time, just to break the monotony of this constant shoveling of bitter and nitrogen rich slough through your body.

How did this go so wrong?!
You had been following a small pack of medium sized herbivores through the forest for about an hour. You'd first seen the blue beasts at the river, and noticed they seem to be a weaker sort of beast in these parts. Their bodies also pack a lot of biomass on them, so you'd been looking forwards to the easy harvest.
But after all the work you'd done and effort you'd expended to follow them to a resting spot, it showed up.
A muscular bipedal beast that looks geared for war. It's flesh is twisted and its skin has a metallic appearance. Actual technological implants can be seen, though they meld so well and in such an organic manner, you can hardly discern where one ends and the other begins.
But regardless of the thing's appearance, the important part about it is what it's done. Right as you charged into the clearing, it emerged from the opposite side. It paused and stared at the prey you'd been hunting all this time, and then it let out a garbled speech of some sort, hands being wreathed in a hazy red energy as it dashed into the herd of seven.
It killed them all before they could even run, one swipe of its claws for each of them. He stole your hunt!
Even if you manage to kill him and take the bodies, it won't erase the irritated indignation you feel...

You assess that the enemy before you, while exhausted, is a credible threat to your hive. Even if four workers took him on, you aren't sure what would happen...
You turn around and speed away from the clearing, your many legs carry you at an unnatural speed as you duck under foliage and weave between trees.

You hear it screech about a fourth of a minute after you started running. It seems there's a chance this fight isn't over...

You slid through the shadows of a dense thicket of trees, passing through a copse of saplings and changing course in a sudden burst of speed.
Soon, the humm that accompanied your two airborne pursuers faded, and you came to realize something.
'The people of this world are more advanced than I thought... even with monsters like that one... they have the ability to send their creations into the forest, and freely chase down anything that catches their eye?' You're upset by the fact you were spotted by their creations. Perhaps you could have prevented any leak of information had you destroyed them, but they likely had a form of ranged communication anyways, so it might not matter...

Well, thankfully you encountered them over an hour away from your hideout.

You take a very roundabout path to your home, moving through the night and without sleep to eat patches of vegitation until you had stored a full load of biomass within you. Though you considered planting a node and continuing this cycle of eating and slowly winding back home, you decide it would be best to leave as little a sign that you exist as possible, for now.

You return to your crag, resigned to wait out the full gestation period of a Worker Drone. Depositing the two extra units of biomass into the resource node, you curl up around the opening and turn your attention towards your insides.
Awkwardly, you form the necessary sex cells in your multipurpose reproductive organs, and stimulate the hormones and chemical slew that allows for a rapid growth of Zenon tissues.
The process is a bit long and involved, and the hormones and focus on such sensitive tissues isn't something you necessarily dislike, but without the subconscious bonding that you'd experience with a nursery structure or other being, you can't fully enjoy this simple act of reproduction... Thirty minutes later, and you've managed to get a successful embryo.
You debate whether or not you should experiment with it. At the moment, it's bogstandard. It's genetic code falls within the sixteen thousand or so stable strands set aside for Worker Drones, but you aren't certain how useful JUST a worker drone will be at this point. It can only hunt the weakest of prey without dying and wasting the biomass you spent to make it, and while you could have it harvest growth accelerant from the environment, maybe there's another niche or adaptation to be made here? You've got the resources to experiment...

>Try to work something special out of it.
>Just let it grow and sleep, indulging in the simplistic minds of your resource node and developing hive-mate.

You go over a few ideas in your mind, from warrior-worker hybrids to a strange collection of ideas including what is basic batteries of biotic energy.
But ultimately, you decide that something which can avoid attention while doing its job is the best option.
The kind of intelligent sense organs and reactive pigmentation membranes required for chemical camoflauge are things you think you'll be able to make, and how you intend to implement your idea. Because while using biotic energy to warp light around the drone would be nice, it's not very feasible without some genetic stock to inspire you...

Attempting this will take 3 days, and cost you 2 biotic fluid.

You have a certain number of successes you need X/Y right, so, should I say "Need 2 5s, if you get 8s there's a bonus to the project" or did I do it the best way?

Anyways. You passed with some overflow but it doesn't do anything at the moment. This is too small of a project for you to be able to put the extra towards anything else.

>help me think of a way to reword my research dcs?
What about "filling" a research bar?
Instead of needing to roll above 5, we need to reach 15 or 20 research points? So if we don't manage to get it the first time instead of insta failing, we can try again later, with a [percentage of whatever progress we had from the failed attempt. I think it feels more like a a real research with setbacks instead of something that just instantly happens or instantly fails because of an arbitrary roll. It could also allow us to produce units that are not completely researched or done, but for whatever reason we need RIGHT NOW regardless of the risks or drawbacks that having what amounts to a prototype brings.
>>
>>3653921
>>3653906
And then maybe the rolls, instead of being flat successes or failures, just feed that number into the research bar?

And instead of, "Oh you roll Y instead of X so you get a better thing," have the upgrades be tiered so we can do it quick and cheap, or we can put some extra time in for the extra features?
>>
>>3653866
Three days come and go in a blur of perfectly recorded experimentation. With the use of biotic fluid, you managed to stimulate the growing drone's exterior tissue layers. You directly anchored it within the center of your gestation chamber, using hair thin biological instruments and some applications of biotic energy to directly influence the growth of a secondary nervous system and sense organs that coordinate with the hindbrain of the worker to adjust pigmentation of its new outer skin layer on command.
You were a bit worried about placing a fourth layer on the body of the simple creature, but it easily took to the adjustments.
While this isn't something you can use on every drone or add to their genetics, you could create and apply this semi intelligent skin to any drone young enough if you have the right tools... so for now, only ones you gestate until you build a nexus...
Well... There's four more days now.

A part of you feels like you're on a roll, like you're in your element and you should go wild with this thing. You still have two more units of biomass and three more of biotic fluid... You might be able to... well.

That's probably a bad idea...

>Try to make this a hero unit. You don't have enough resource on hand... but you could canabalize the resource node and some of your own body to finish the job. Having a real companion, one who can continue the hive even if the worst should happen to you...

Swimming around inside of your incredibly round sphere of a midsection, it reorients itself to make things as easy as possible for you both. 'Considerate brat.' You remark to yourself with a bit of a sigh. You use the thousands of hair-thin instruments of your gestation chamber to attach and penetrate the flesh closest to the outside world. Stitching and snipping and numbing yourself in certain places, you prepare for what's to come. Your tail curves around to the underside of your body. Laying on your side like you are makes this quite easy on you, as you carefully align the tip of your blade with the already prepared section of flesh.
It splits with ease, the mat of living stitches prevents any bleed from the numb flesh as a long slit opens along your insides. You roll your gestation chamber as best as you can, twisting in just the right way for the opening, bound by mucus and nerveless connective tissue, to alight with the exit in your pallid flesh. with one last cut, your insides spill out. Mainly, the drone with soft chitin that turns gray upon impacting the stone floor.
You sigh in relief as the immense weight of a being almost as large as your normal size is relieved from your sensitive flesh. You sew yourself back up in under a minute as you twist into a standing position and look over the newest addition to the hive...

While most of them were degraded by the harsh time spent in sliph space, the floating framents of genetic essence in your tissues still strengthened this newest addition to the hive. I've always found that the weakness in hive quests comes from the premise of being a never ending expansion of the hive for the hive.
Where the only pull, is the conflict. It's both the draw and the weight that drags them down.

You call your child, the first of many Zenon you will bring into this world, to your side. 'You should eat, finish growing before anything else.'
It half crawls towards you, nuzzling your side with its outer jaws as it plays with its fingers. It gently touches the agitated wound of your flesh and vocalizes a small whine, through your connection you can tell it feels guilty. 'Don't worry about that,' you tell it, 'it isn't your fault, I cut a little too far is all.' You explain. 'I should have realized you were a bit bigger than I expected.'
It tilts its head in confusion, but lies next to you, using its hands to help position its body to curl against you. You use your many legs and claws to help it move up close, and you begin to fall into a soft sleep. Body exhausted from the accumulated exertions you've put it through since you awoke in this world. But soon, just a few more days... and you can share this burden with the youngling in your embrace. The more Zenon you bring into this world, the lighter the weight in your heart will become.
'Someday... someday, we can all... just...' You drift off before you can finish your train of thought, the soft beating of your drone's heart helping you slip into a realm of dreams.

The days would pass like this, as your body recuperates and your young worker nearly doubles in size. Eventually, you are lured out of your formless dreams when your drone nudges your body firmly and persistently. Sigh, you open your many eyes and roll over, getting up with dozens of claws and legs scratching at the floor to bear your weight. Looking at the drone, you see some piles in your small cavern...

>{Dice results X/X/XX/XX/XX/XX}

It seems it had some time to gather resources. The cavern's been extended a bit as well, and some simple structures were created to make it feel a bit more like home.

Before you say anything, though, you notice something is a bit different within you. Your rest seems to have allowed an unconscious adaptation to the strain you've been under since awakening on this world

With a bit of a happy tone to your thoughts, you guide the drone out of your small hive and into the forests surrounding your home. His presence is a constant presence, a weight that somehow provides more strength than a burden, to your thoughts. You turn your own attentions to the pool of energy within you. While it wasn't directly affected by the adaptations you underwent in your restorative slumber, you feel like it is much less 'out of place', to simplify your realization. The flesh of your body is being much more tolerant of the intruding and pervasive energy, accepting its presence without agitating your thoughts.
>+2 Biotic pool
Thoughts which hold a certain sharpness and weight to them. Yes, it appears that your body's decision to deal with the constant stress of external energy factors was to build up the natural powers inherent to a psychic like yourself.
>+1 Stamina pool
And overall, you feel more... capable. You feel as though you are going to be able to push yourself for further, harder, and longer than before.

But, that's not important, you went on a tangent train of thought for a bit too long. 'What was I originally thinking about?' ... oh, right. The results of observing the internal pool of mysterious energy. Well, you prodded it with your biotic energy, consuming a unit of biotic fluid to refresh your reserves after you expended all your energy.
The results were quite interesting. You could directly interact with the pool using biotic energy. They didn't... react well. In fact, they clashed and reacted in explosive ways. Thankfully, it didn't hurt you, but you only made a little bit of progress on understanding what ??? energy does and is, before you'd used up all you had on hand.(See image)
>0/1 ???
What you have learned, is that it's reactive and it's powerful. It managed to wipe out all your reserves of biotic energy, and then use up most of what was left, before the small amount was all used up...
>2/4 biotic
In the end, the event was a bit taxing on you, but you still feel fine to keep this up.
>3/4 stamina

Well, enough about your progress. You check on what the drone's been doing, and find he's gathered some biomass.
>34/30 biomass
Currently it's stored in a big sack of resin and nerveless flesh that he regurgitated, but that's not a safe or permanent method of storing resources...

What should you do going forwards?

You however... well. I didn't have plans for crit fails on general rolls like this, but maybe I should with THAT result...

Well, your drone goes ahead and sets up a resource node all on his own, even managing to find a subterranean part of the cavernous spire you've made your home. It's filled with ore with infintessmally small flecks of shining material. Seems bizarre and interesting, from what you can see through its eyes.

Most of your time, though, in the past many many many hours, is spent climbing to the top of the spire and taking a look around you.

From above, you look down and find the clouds obscure a lot of your view. But you can see a river, other spires, some small some large, and a mountain that's like, ten times taller than your cracked and broken spire... Well, climbing down's going to be a pain in the ass...

Drone stamina has returned to full!

Your descent from the top of the spire was... not simple. Nor did you finish it before your body began to exhaust itself. You managed to find a comfortable crag to sleep in, since you didn't have anything to restore your stamina in storage. Before you started your recovery, though, you left a few instructions for the drone, who had dillegently processed enough roughage to produce five entire units of biomass.

>Pilot the drone ourselves.

Spend the drone's stamina over the course of four turns.
Remember, 3/3 hp. Stealth bonuses. And 6/6 stamina. Most actions cost 1 stamina, particularly hard ones could take 2 or even 3.

>While harvesting trees...

You were following your bbbd's orders, uh, that's big brainy boi daddy, anyways. You were following his orders to chomp chomp and gulp down all the bitter and gross greens. You wish he'd let you hunt, but it's okay, you did a lot of that when he was sleeping.
He's sleeping again right now, and uh... right, you were chomping and gulping and rubbing your tummy with your hands, but then, you hurt your teeth!! You hadn't even noticed what you were chewing on, cause you were... well. That doesn't matter, it's not like you were thinking about something. No, well, not really. You only have this much cognizance because your bbbd is sleeping. Since he's not taking up all the room, you ran a basic personality matrix using the bits he ain't.

Uhh.... right! Big bite and darn near broken jaw! So you looked in front of you, totally not yanked outta a daydream of you cuddling some animals slated for assimilation or anything like that. And there it was, big, grey tree. Not just a grey tree though, it's bark is harder than steel... well, probably. You aren't sure if you could bite through steel with all the hive upgrades gone. But still, steel, heheh. STILL, it's just sitting there bleeding all over the place and not being bitten... You bite it again, 'OW!' you huff, angrily staring up at it.
Then you notice coils of black... something, tendrils, tentacles, cables or something?
Well, they start wrapping around the trunk that's like eight times bigger than you are. You stare at them in confusion, as three of them come close to you. One of them peels back and extends three, colored, baby tendrils/tentacle/cables. They wrap around eachother and float half a muzzle or so above you...

You freeze, realizing this might be a scary thing and not just stubborn food. Your skin shudders, the colors changing even as special muscles contract to better disrupt your silhouette, how sound bounces off of you, and display a perfect image of light on the opposite and corresponding sides of your body.
Uh, well. You don't actually understand all of those words. As far as you're concerned, you closed your eyes and held your breath for a few seconds.
Somehow, someway, you even manage to shut out all of that buzzing humming whining stuff all over the planet.
In that moment, you... disappeared. You aren't sure what this means for you, but your bbbd will probably have a better idea of this all when he wakes up.
You eventually open your eyes and look around. The tendrils are still hanging around, feeling at the body of the trunk where you'd bit it. It curiously pokes the small chip your teeth bit into it, but your attention is stolen by something ELSE entering the area... It's... uh, something? You don't really have words for it, but you burn the image into your mind so bbbd can look at it later.

It approaches the tree and scrapes it with his horns, from its mouth comes a pattern of sounds as energy swirls around its body and floating platforms of light appear in a stable but constantly moving pattern.

Huh... what should you do now? Just watch it happen?

>>3657321

You expand the senses of your conjoined minds, carefully allowing tendrils of thought to wrap in a loose net around the tree and creature. The fine web of metaphysical thought energy should be capable of catching the excess thoughts and intents behind each of their actions. Sound, movement, gazes... unfortunately it's just a jumble of information with no reference point for understanding. All you can get out of them, is a lack of hostility and sense of kinship.

Your eyes tell you a bit more about the situation, though. Because the tree's tendrils touch the body of the beast, slipping through the fur of its mane you witness some corresponding colored tendrils that were hidden in the hairy horned mess of its neck.

Then, the arrays of light seem to activate in some way, a stream of red light particles seeping into the bleeding wounds of the tree...

So from what I gather, rather than just telepathic communication or a hivemind the hive actually has a sort of disembodied intelligence that is finite. Hey QM what do we need to do to birth stealth drones in the hatchery
>>
>>3657835
See, for a while now you've been calling the 'nest' a hatchery.
But at minimum you need

Nest - Nexus - Research project to go from prototype to completed - and spawn a caretaker.
>>
>>3658111
Nest to grow it.
Nexus to research and unlock caretaker unit.
Caretaker to implement the upgrade on a growing or grown (if you upgrade the trait far enough) worker drone.
>>
>>3658142
And to have it be built in? Not "applied"
>>
>>3658156
It's a bit iffy on how I'm doing that kind of thing because I've been considering the lore implications.
You have tens of thousands of variations for ' worker drone' and it is random which grows. This is to keep the strain stable and provide redundancy.
If you made stealth drone a 'species' instead of an upgrade, it would need to be worked from the bottom up to justify the effort pit into it.
If you just want the ability for any drone to come out of it's pod with the upgrade, a nesting chamber is what you need.
>>
>>3658188
Understood, thanks
>>
>>3658188
Nesting chamber is an extension of a caretaker that let's it oversee ten eggs at a time.

You wait for a minute or so, eyes closed and an intense amount of concentration put into focusing on the two.
You experienced a strange moment of clarity, and apologized to your boss as you drew even more heavily on his dormant body and mind. You can feel the distress you're causing, and resolve to quickly decipher what your targets are doing.
When your bastardized Identity settles, you wince as your brain swells and your heartrate doubles, struggling to get enough fresh blood to your starving brain.

... Your eyes fly open as you look at what's going on with a critical eye. 'I'll make up for this when you wake up...' You think to your father, knowing he'll want to review this all in as much detail as possible, and he'll surely get your message. 'I know this is what you would want, it's what we need. The last one of these beasts was half this size, and this tree... it resembles the broken one from that night.'
Having justified yourself to the god who willed you into existence, you turned your full attention to them.
>>
>>3659034

The way the beast looks at the tree, it kneels before it and bows its head with closed eyes as the energy from its glowing sigils begins to die. The wounds of the tree shine with a intense glow as more and more of the black vines descend from the tree tops. It moves and wraps the reverent beast in an embrace... they're connected. This, it's just how you would treat him, your dad, your god... It's reverence, it's communion. It's beautiful and pure... and it is disturbed. Something else is on the verge of this exchange, something smaller, but sinister. You think, that you've deduced an important thing... These beings are split, they're not whole like Zenon. They struggle and conflict and war... This thing is approaching with hostile intent, it wants to disrupt this ritualistic communion with violence and pain.

It's speeding up, hooves tearing at the ground as a low roar emerges from its throat, but the one in the middle of communion doesn't hear. It doesn't see. Even as a scarlet barrier flashes into existence, and is immediately shattered, the kneeling beast stays still as the wounds on the tree glow and... shrink, only by fractions of a percent, but in your state of unnatural and heightened awareness, and comparing it with memories half a minute old... You could interfere... You want to interfere, but if you die in this state, it'll be a wound on the hive... It's time to decide.

>Extend your invisible tail in the charging monster's way, lock the sharp chitin plates together into a guillotine blade to clothesline its reckless charge.
>Draw more biotic energy from your father and fire it into the tree. That should disrupt their connection, with the power of a Zenon's mind.
>Don't interfere. You can't afford to take a chance. You can't afford to die here, even though everything inside of you is screaming to interfere.

You can't sit and watch this happen. Something inside of you is motivated and determined to stop this vile beast from completing its sneak attack. It's... a visceral reaction, you think. Something about the twisted mass of flesh and arms is wrong. As a living being, you can't allow it to continue!
That said, or realized, you crawl into its path as your overclocked mind flawlessly processes your surroundings and keeps up your invisibility. At the last second, you extend your tail into the thing's path, the axe-like blades of your chitinous tail make soft cracking noises as they are pulled together into a solid guillotine ready to bisect the beast. But it somehow reacts to the invisible danger, the thick arms hanging from its jaw and chest grab at its own forelimbs, ripping its hands off the ground and forcing it to slide under your attack.
It jumps to its feat, confused and angered as it snaps at its own limbs. One of them smacks it and the limbs all over its body open their hands, facing palms all over as a wave of that strange energy begins moving around the clearing.

You freeze, unwilling to so much as breathe or blink as you focus on using biotic energy to shield yourself from the intrusive sweep. It's a form of detection, but after half a minute, it ends and the beast growls at itself in anger, even snapping at and breaking the arm of the hand which had slapped him earlier. The other hands shy away from the beasts mouth, returning to their normal position as clawed spines and horns on its body.

It turns back to its original prey, claws kneading the grown as it barks and mutters. Instead of charging, though, blood red energy begins to pour from its mouth, mixing into the ground at its feet as its clawed paws knead it into the soil. Some of the hands on its body seem to manifest strings of the red energy that attach to the ground beneath it, dexterous fingers twitching as more and more of the earth is bled upon and made to move. Given a few more moments, the entire area around him may start swirling and undulating like the sea. Its chanting mouth forms a wicked grin full of needle like teeth, but you realize it is in fact clawed finger bones that fill its mouth, and the two waving tongues are also clawed appendages of some kind.
>>
>>3659553
You once more shudder at the realization that this is an unnatural thing that goes against the principles of life and what is natural. You dread that inside, the creature may be even more foul...

>Leap towards it and roll in the air. Use your momentum for a vicious chop from your guillotine tail. You can't imagine missing with his back turned to you and his feet rooted in the soil he's mixing up.
>Interrupt its... ritual? Borrow more Biotic Energy from your father and use it on his still form. You can't imagine missing with his back turned to you and his feet rooted in the soil he's mixing up.

You make a snap decision, turning and leaping a dozen feet up the side of a nearby tree, before jumping off in an acrobatic flip.
You spin through the air, your long tail turning into a solid blade that completely encircles you. Like a vertical whirling dervish, your form blurs with an audible whistle before a thick and heavy splat spells the end of your target, or at least, the end of his ritual.
Leaping away without looking at your enemy, you uncurl and land, skidding to face the beast as it roars in pain.
Your body recoils instinctively at what you see, however.
Half of its body has been shorn off, a mass of writhing hands and fingers spills from the wound, among a pouring rain of black and red blood. Its unearthly scream rises in crescendo as its skin writhes and more hands begin to emerge from its flesh. Red energy, like blood, flows from its eyes as its spine breaks and hands lacking any structure grip at the gaping wound, ripping the skin further and further apart.

The beast by the tree is released, though, from its trance. A flow of red energy pools into him from the partially healed tree, and his body sheens from it before fading back into its natural colors.
Its eyes turns from the sight of its natural enemy, and you who are splattered in its black and red blood. Your invisibility rendered useless by the clinging substance. "aka neahal broagart!" It barks something to you, but you shake your head and continue to focus on the writhing beast you'd just attacked.
More and more arms have emerged from the wound, and it's laying on its side, silent and with dead eyes that still flow red, weeping in silent agony as the hands claw at the world itself...

Something is coming.

You... you can't risk this. A veritable tower of larger and larger arms has built around the corpse, and you barely manage to dodge when some of them grasp at you.
The sounds of the beast's writhing flesh, slapping and cracking as its original body is hidden from view. It's terrifying...

You too, have felt fear. Fear at what your death would do to your father. He spent a week and a half caring for you, most of which he carried you inside of his strained and abused body. You can't repay that with death, not like this. 'I'm sorry father. I won't be able to see this to the end, but I'll see you again when you awake and it's my turn to slumber in the archives.' You think to yourself.

You turn and bolt away from the monster and its opponent, the guardian of the tree. You narrowly barrel past a red, spherical barrier on your way out. You're afraid you'd have had to use all of father's biotic energy if you'd wanted to escape after that came down.
You turn and see that the area within the dome is no longer visible...

With a shake of your head, you begin to return home in a quick and confusing way.

Interlude: Oakseer Thorntail part 1

The small creature, which is splattered in the gore of the fiendish acolyte, runs as you finish syncing your spell with the great ancestor. His guidance and your power led to the formation of an incredible barrier which would seal this space from the outside world.

Thankfully, you managed to complete it in time. Instead of facing a full descendant of the dark god, the acolyte's forced death summoning only brought forth a mindless and twisted apparition of his master...
It emerges in all of it's divine and disgusting glory. An awful sight both terrible and majestic as it towers above you... You tense as it begins to move, calling forth the domain of fire and earth as your feathers alight with magic.

You bolt into the reach of the giant beast, hundreds of its limbs tear through the air and ground as they try to grasp you with a mind of their own, but they are mindless and your maneuvers force them to tear into each other. A shout of exhiliration bursts from within you, it's unfitting for the youngest elder on the council to be shouting in battle like a spring buck, but it's been almost a decade since you found yourself in this position. You can't help the grin twisting your features as your horns exude an aura of fire and steel. You twist through the air, latching onto the body of your opponent with the underside of your tail, which is covered in barbed fangs. Your horns gore through a dozen of the limbs before you switch positions and unleash a second attack that tears a chunk out of its side.
Pieces of shattered rib and spilling organs fall to the ground as you continue to climb and gore and shred your way up the beast.

Your hide is scratched and grabbed, hair ripped free and hide made to bleed, but your aura of fire and steel protects you from the most of it.

Until, some of them begin to glow with a multitude of spells...

You do not fear though. For the ancestor's weight lies between your antlers. You can see them in your heart, feel their gaze as they judge you, and then they approve.

Your body alights with an ethereal flame that swallows the incoming attacks. Your hooves pound burning trails of flame into the spine of your foe as you dip your head.

Your horns gouge into the bloated flesh like water, great rents are torn in it until you manage to leap through its body entirely, emerging through its stomach and flying into the air. With a grunt of effort, you solidify the air beneath your feet into a red platform which you use to leap onto a tree. Your tail latches deeply into the bark as you pant for breath. The thousand armed freak, the shard of a demi-god's soul. It writhes in pain and confusion before you... Yes. It's time to end this.

With the ancestors watching, you gather your magic and will...

The elements rage in your grasp. Fire, earth, water, and air. You contain them, compress them, and something new is formed. It is clear and formless. It is small, a bead no larger than your own eye, but it radiates a violent energy like the calm before the storm.

Silver Lining you call its name reverently, it was named after him, after the first king of the forest. The silver stag who pulled your kind out of the fire and brimstone of your home dimension. It was the wisdom of his teachings and your faith in the great ancestor, which gave you the perseverance to fuse the elements like this.

And it is this will, this hope that will someday lead to the end of the mad king and his acolytes of the dark god. This forest can be free of madness with the knowledge you pass down!
So you will NOT DIE HERE!
"RAAAAAGH!"
With a titanic scream of effort, you force the infinitely compact bead through the air.

The enemy has created a similar attack in the time it's had to breathe. A sphere of thousands of grinding and twirling tubes of white energy, it glows with an unnatural and black light that seeps out of the center.

'Absolute insanity' you think in revulsion at the sight, but your attack pierces the monstrous creation, and destabilizes the core of the spell.

It explodes with a violent shockwave that propells your attack into the heart of your enemy's body, whereupon you give the command. "Burst open and rend, SILVER LINING!!!"

Your vision flashes white as the air rends and sound itself is destroyed.

Everything within a hundred feet of the attack is gone, and pieces of the demi-god's corpse are burning with a silver, all consuming light.

Exhausted and low on mana, you reinforce the wardings on the tree which houses a portion of the great ancestor. It fades from view as a multitude of enchantments and illusions hide it, disguise it, mask it, and cause others to overlook it.

You aren't sure what happened to awaken it or break those barriers, but you know a long walk home is ahead of you, now that you've already used the last charge of your brush-step amulet... 'Maybe Balorak will have another in stock?' you wonder, as the last of the demigod's flesh burns away, and the clearing where all of this went down is slowly filled with ancient guardians who mend the wounds and scars that the battle left on the forest.

So what did ya'll think of Thorn?
>>
>>3660321
dope man thorn is dope
>>

We need to level more. So glad we picked the probably-magic option.

Speaking of ya'll waking up.

I've never archived a thread. What ought I to do for that?
and when does a thread 'end'? Right about now is when i'd like to start a new chapter so to speak.
Climatic apex and all, ending on a strong note?

Doing a recap of time passing and bringing you and your drone back to full resources would be kinda nice too...
>>
>>3660342
yeah I think setting up our base and adding redundancy to our hivemind is a must
>>
>>3660342
Hide underground for the rest of time?
>>
>>3660350
here you go just follow the steps on the page
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/requestqstinterface.html
>>
>>3660350
usually a thread "ends" when it reaches bump limit(1000 posts) and then the QM (you) make the next thread or it just dies.
>>
>>3660358
Huh. Well I don't feel like trying to continue this line of the quest for 600 more posts. I'd rather start the new one with a time skip to make it all clean. I know I'm autistic, but there's some kinda mental hurdle on just continuing after an interlude like that.
>>
>>3660366
You could just do the Time Skip in this thread, but if you are going to start a new thread make sure to link it.
>>
>>3660371
I will. It'll take a while to finish the rolls and background elements. Hope you guys look forwards to thread two!
>>
>>3660380
I know I am
>>
>>3660380
See you QM!
>>
I guess I say 'hey it's been archived' here, right?
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?tags=Zenon%20Hive%20Quest

Okay guys, there's the archive^^

I'm down for some Q and A while I wind down and relax a bit, if anyone's interested. I'll caution with spoilers if I reveal too much.
>>
>>3660393
Neat quest man
>Q and A
I've seen another quest (Brood quest) with the same... species? of character, I think. Are these little Hive bug dudes from something?
>>
>>3660393
Are there subterranean predators?
>>
>>3660459
not that I know of. I just pulled a lot of good images from google and pintrest which weren't tyranids or the zerg.

Drew this. Not much of an artist but I just had an idea of what they might look like if they were based on more mammalian anatomy. Combining bugs and animals is hard.
>>
>>3660393
>>3660474
this is how you know your quest is a keeper when it starts to generate fan art. also very well drawn
>>
>>3660474
That's pretty cool actually. Looks more reptilian than mammalian though.

It has a much lower and steadier center of gravity in your picture, but it also seems slower and bulkier. I appreciate the effort though. This has some nice details too it. I especially like the notches on the jaw and the tail vertebral joint sections.

Hurai is good.

I like it. Speaking of names, we have bbbd (Big Brainy Boi Daddy) but I don't think we've named the worker drone yet.

Kinda wish you guys would hurry up and build a nexus... so i can hit you with truly ridiculous costs for structures and units you can't refuse.
>>
>>3660506
how about BGSB (best sneaky good boi) given BGSB's intelligence levels it sounds like something it would come up with
>>
>>3660508
We are trying to hurry up and build a nexus, but first we need biomass and Nodes to store the biomass in and it goes faster if we have Drones go gather that biomass-

Basically we're still grinding for resources.
>>
>>3660513
sounds a lot like Minecraft to me
>>
>>3660514
Yeah, gotta grind up for that Iron pickaxe, and then you can play with all the Redstone and use buckets to make Nether Portals and get the Diamonds to make the really neat gear and such.

Geez, relax a bit guys. I just was running a second quest is all. We're not dead and I'm not dying>>3660393
Like I said, this thread is archived. Which means, I'll start a second thread when I'm ready to run. Probably next week.
>>
>>3660393
I'm alive, threads archived, new thread next week.
I've been running a second quest here
>>3663075
It's a Worm AU with a pretty fun main character and a scary power. All set in a cyberpunk/futuristic world where almost a million people were put into a coma, and have been waking up with high amounts of confusion, and superpowers that break their previously placed limitations...
>>
>>3678645
He lives! next week it is then.
>>
>>3678661
>I thought he was dead
>He was running another quest that I'm following
>>
>>3681312
If that isn't a JOJO tier twist I don't know what is.
