You are Ushi Walker, now going by the hero name Loanstar, the half-japanese/half-american wielder of the mighty quirk “Everything is Bigger in Texas", U.A. High first year student and one of the three costumed heroes calmly walking on one of Yokkaichi's main streets at night, in front of a crowd and their cameras.

Nothing about that would be out of the ordinary, as heroes are public figures, if you were accompanied by anyone else.

But you being clad in your skintight shiny white costume with red and blue accents next to Edgeshot's dark red and blues and Johai's dark red and grey ninja costumes is what made the public appearance strange enough for you to comment on, and thus get asked the question you are currently musing on.

"If everythin' we are doin' is planned..." You mutter, tapping your chin. "Why are we doing this?"

You look at the crowd and blink, focusing mainly on the kids wrapping their scarves over their faces, imitating Edgeshot's mask. ...Cute.

Then you shake your head and go back to thinking your answer through, trying to keep your mind from wandering again.

What it means to start a patrol in front of everyone? As your mentor stated, it was no mere coincidence, but something he had either planed or accounted for.

With Edgeshot being such a high ranked hero, making his presence public would make the streets safer just by acting like a walking deterrent, right?

"We are letting villains know we are on the streets and they shouldn't even try!" You exclaim, loudly punching the palm of your hand. "And-"

If being interrupted wasn't annoying enough, having it be by Johai's scoffing adds insult to injury.

"Hol' up, Ah ain't done yet! And! Makin' a regular public appearance tells the media and the public at large that heroes are watchin' over them." You continue, trying to keep your smile as you conclude. "All in all, we patrol to stop villains, we keep patrollin’ to deter them, and we let the media see us so people know they’re safe."

For a minute, you wonder if you got it wrong, as your mentor keeps walking without any acknowledgement to your answer.

But the mounting dread stops once you reach the next block, as the hero stops.

>"We walk in the limelight for the public's peace of mind and prowl on the streets to clean them up, skulking to keep the area clean." "You are correct, Roanstar. People need to see their heroes, and letting everyone know we are currently on patrol will make any moderately smart villain leave or go into hiding."

You have been in the country for long enough to know that wasn't an intentional slight or mockery of your name, but it still irks you a bit.

You don't try to correct him though. What would be the point in that? Instead, you make sure to keep your eyes peeled and keep an eye out for why you are taking the route you are taking, continuing two more blocks at plain sight before taking a rather sudden turn to the east, down a narrow side alley, narrow enough that you almost kick over the stack of bound newspapers and cardboard on your way.

You almost apologise to it too.

>"In Yokkaichi and most other cities, the center is usually safe, both from normal crime and villainy. Emergencies notwithstanding." Edgeshot says, still walking into the dark. "Any moderately well known hero office or active enough police department tends to keep their area clean."

Then, almost like a blur, he jumps and unravels, weaving himself back together on an undeployed fire escape, looking like he just skipped over a puddle.

>"That means we need to keep moving for patrolling. While it varies per city, I've found that there's two major hotspots for problem. At the docks and at the warehouses." He explains, with the distance making it somewhat hard to listen to. "That's where we are going now, so get here now. We don't have all night."

Looking up at the hero, you can't help but wonder how are you meant to follow.

Sure you could use your quirk and maybe break the pavement… But the plaster on the wall seems to have fallen apart years ago, so you are confident you could just drive your boots in and climb up.

Johai for his part just digs into his pouch and pulls what looks to be a nut with a string attached to it. He spins it vertically, building up speed, then the nut suddenly enlarges, sending him flying upwards. It quickly shrinks back down to its size, slowing his ascent as suddenly as its enlargement had launched him.

He then stands next to Edgeshot, looking down on you.

>What do you do?

I don't see why using our Quirk would be a problem. Edgeshot used his. With how we can shift so quickly and concentrate it to specific parts of our body, we can even do it much more subtly than you'd expect from growing giant.

I'd argue that for roof-hopping, finesse is just as important as speed. And a 3x9 is still Ushi moving faster than sound, thanks to the two levels of the Speed extra. So she gets up to the roof in a fifth of a second instead of only a tenth, either way she's moving incredibly fast.

After a couple seconds of contemplation, you take stock of the area around you, the distance between the fire escape platform and the ground and place your hand on your thigh, tapping the tips of your fingers on your costume as you make a few short calculations to.

>"Are you coming?" Johai asks, looking down at you before turning around towards your mentor. "Can she even do it?"

Taking the tiniest of breaks to roll your eyes, you make contact with all five fingertips and crouch, then activate your quirk. The moment you do, the white mist spouts out of your fingertips, briefly covering your whole body as your leg enlarges and kicks with just enough force to reach the fire escape platform. You instantly return your leg to size before it could harm you or compromise your landing.

"Ah think so." You reply, landing besides him with no other sound but the jingle-jangle of your spurs, your half-cape fluttering behind you before the mist below even has time to disperse.

>"Well, that's the lowest bar cleared at least." He comments, scoffing. "Nice smokescreen though."

>"Good. Now try to keep up the pace." Edgeshot interjects before you can answer in any way, unraveling and hopping and bouncing up unto the roof of the building like a reverse slinky.

This time, you follow first, trying to streamline the thought process of your jump and hopping behind the hero in another puff of mist, with Johai following close behind.

>"If you think you can't make the leap over a street, now would be the time to say it." Your mentor says, turning to face both of you.

>"The night is slipping away as we speak, let's go." Johai replies without missing a beat.

"Uh… Ah sure can!" You say, spouting the first thing that came to mind.

>"This city's place within the greater Japan lies on the docks and the industries." The hero explains as you continue your rooftop run, consciously avoiding letting your arms fall behind you. "The warehouses are far too large and bountiful to be fully covered by security, making them preferred targets of villains who would try to apply their quirks to their crimes and avoid a fight with a hero. Quirk-assisted burglary is as still villainy. On the other hand, the docks are riddled with smugglers. Not always villany, but I've seen enough black-market support items to keep an eye on the area."

>"Would be easy money with little risk, if successful." Johai points out.

>"Indeed." The hero continues. "The industries on the other hand, are varied, and crimes near them are far worse. Tired workers are easy marks, and places like the power-plant attract villains that fancy themselves geniuses."
>>
"How come?" You ask.

>"If someone were to infect the system, it could hold part of the powergrid hostage." He explains, jumping a top a utility pole, his scarf flying besides him. "But they rarely get far, even before heroes are called in. The police is often more than enough to stop a so called genius with a laptop."

Down at street level, you see someone pull out his phone and snap a pic of the hero.

A great deal of the night goes on like that, running and jumping from rooftop to rooftop while the hero tells you what's each building about, recognizing even a server farm that you couldn't distinguish from the other concrete-gray buildings in the area, and stopping at key points to see people see you.

At about 3AM however, you smell something burning, followed by the sound of something heavy and soft hitting the floor, something that both ninjas seem to notice, as all three of you stop on your tracks

>"Both of you, stay here and stay safe, don't hesitate to run." The hero says, barely higher than a whisper before jumping down. You don't think he even saw what he was getting into, just silently jumped in, leaving you atop the roof.

Down there you can see a 16-wheeler with an open door and a man laying on the ground, shaking but not bleeding, with a tall blond man in front of him pointing a finger gun at him.

Behind the man, a woman stands near the truck's exhaust, waving her hands in front of the smoke and seemingly giving it shape. Blonde, maybe siblings? If it weren't for the obviously nefarious scenario, it'd be cool seeing her turn the smoke into what looks like a large crab that starts moving on it's own.

Before the crab can scuttle more than a foot, a red string pierces the woman, who ironically collapses like a puppet with it's strings cut. The crab then dissipates.

However, the blond man seems to notice, firing a shiny red, almost white projectile at the man on the floor and hopping into the truck.

The man stops shaking… And his clothes catch fire.

We should get a pin made of some bullshit material in our utility belt, ask Mei or someone from support to get a little of said material and make a pin (shield) and some (mini)reinforcements to our knuckles, bracelets, knees, boots, elbows... poor criminals.
>>
>>3662880
Oh and full horn covers too, and maybe a wip and...fuck, just ask for a full upgrade in exchange of making a ton of the bullshit material and giving the rest to support. If the reinforced suit is heavier than our current one we can use it to train our strength and endurance. If this seems like abusing our power too much (and makes us too OP), we could always wait until the people in Support research a little to make sure there is no better material and also add some other improvements to our suit, like ventilation without obvious weak points or something that eases the strain we get from quick size shifting like with Austin tossing (all this while only changing small details of our costume like the knuckles, bracelets, etc could take a few weeks/months).

You are not dumb. You have been here before, in a way.
You know very well that the last time you got told to stay out of trouble and disobeyed you spent far more sunlight than you'd have wanted cleaning the classroom.

But this is different. The last time you disregarded orders and your own well being to save your friends.

This time it's for a complete stranger.

"Ah'm goin' in!" You yell as you jump off the roof, letting Johai know as much of your plan as there is. Nothing much.

>"What are you doing!?" You hear him reply as you descend.

If you weren't trying to save an innocent from immolation, you'd be impressed at your improvements since your first day at school.

This time, it takes you minimal effort to land without hurting yourself, enlarging yourself to make contact with the ground sooner and quickly shrinking down, performing a shoulder roll to decelerate the excess momentum and get running to help the victim, your pauldron and horn covers and caps protecting you from the asphalt as you do so.

You reach the man in a matter of seconds, squinting to keep the smell from making you tear up. The horrible smell of burning and melting polycot would be enough to get you retching, but you embrace it this time, all to keep yourself from thinking of the other acrid smell in the air.

"Sir, can you hear me?" You desperately ask as you try to evaluate the situation as quickly as you can, stopping short of touching the burning area with your own hands.

The man must be in his late thirties or early forties, with messy black hair that makes you think he might have been wearing a cap a few minutes ago. His jacket doesn't hide any secrets, with a burning, melting hole in the middle of the chest that you could swear is expanding every time you blink.

Maybe less than half a second wasn't enough time for an answer, but you don't want to wait for one, opting instead to grab your half-cape and lay it over the man's burning chest before it spreads, putting some amount of pressure to smother the fire under the red and white stripes.

The smoke stings your eyes, but you endure, staying directly over the man to make sure the fire dies.

>"A shame." You then hear Edgeshot say, next to you. "Such cowardice is what really separates the scum of the earth from simple misguided men. Injuring an innocent as a distraction and leaving his partner behind…"

You quickly look up, seeing the hero hauling the tall blond villain over his shoulder, a single drop of blood running down his throat, where Edgeshot's impossibly precise strikes must have hit.

"He's unconscious! Ah think the fire's dead but Ah dunno what-" You explain, stumbling over your own words before the hero interrupts you, poking you in the forehead.
>>
He then puts a finger to his ear and speaks.

>"Emergency at my location. Ambulance, one. Burns. Police. 2 Villains, captured. Fire and uncertain." He says looking up to the night sky and making his enunciation as clear as you think the japanese language can get.

He then lowers his hand and look at you again.

>"The villain's quirk seems to be somewhat similar to a flare, projecting a concussive force on impact." He explains, turning around and dropping the villain next to his accomplice, seemingly to tie them together. "Now, what are you doing down here, Walker?"

>What do you do?

>[It wasn't what he asked you to do, but you couldn't have done less. "Just helpin' a man in need, sir. Would have done the same as a civvie."]

You were expecting some sort of reprimand for what you did, so the question hits you like a bucket of cold water, washing your erratic previous thought process away.

"Just helpin' a man in need, sir. Would have done the same as a civvie." You answer, quickly and sincerely, without thinking about it. "And Ah would do it again in a heartbeat, too."

>"No? You are staring." The hero asks, crouching by your side, staring back at you.

You waste a fraction of a second blinking, but immediately bounce back to action.

"...Would you kindly raise his feet, sir? He may go into shock." You ask your mentor, recalling what you know of first aid and tearing his coat open and ripping his shirt apart with your bare hands, making sure to leave the melted patch of plastic fabric alone, as that's the medic's to treat.

It's almost surreal to see the hero do as you say, but you try not to make it weird.

With that done, you waste no time digging into your pouch for your field medikit, enlarging the white matchbox-looking thing into the suitcase it's meant to be, quickly pulling out a can of burn spray and starting spraying with merely two shakes to spare.

You aren't sure what is in, but the label says cooling and pain relief to be applied to the area, so that should be enough. It also smells like aloe, so that's a plus.

Sliding a finger under his nose tells you that he's both still breathing, and breathing fast, shallow breaths. Once again, something for the professionals to deal with.

"The air's warm tonight, so that should do it for now." You say while keeping your medikit handy, just in case.

Only then you turn your attention back to the hero.

"Sorry for the, uh… Befuddlement?" You apologize, giving a sheepish smile. "Ah thought you were gonna go off on my case."

>"You went directly against orders." He says, looking right at your eyes. "I know it's not the first time you do it, and you just said you would do it again. Why?"

Why? That's an easy question.

"'cause it was the right thing to do." You answer without thinking about it. "Now and then."

>"Don't hesitate then." Edgeshot then says. "No order or rule is perfect, nor can heroes be expected to follow them mindlessly... But they serve a purpose."

Most people seem unsure when the pause in the middle of their speech, but when he does, it sounds mysterious.

"What if Ah didn't do anythin' and it got… worse?" You argue.

>"Then it gets worse. Such things happen." He tells you, pointing at the man with his hand. "But if it was your involvement that made it worse…"

This time it's not mysterious at all. The implication hanging on the end of that sentence is as clear as water to you.

>"Intent only counts for so much." He says, standing up. "In the end, it's the results that count. Especially in this profession. Keep that in mind the next time you want to be a maverick."
>>
It doesn't take long for the ambulance and police to arrive. Minutes at most. Coming from a rural area in Texas, that's actually surprising.

>"The legal division of the office will handle the rest, but be prepared to give your account of the event if asked." Edgeshot comments as both of you return where Johai was waiting. "But I think this is eventful enough for your first patrol. I'll escort you back before continuing on my own."

It was a lot to deal with, maybe enough for a night, the moon might be high on the sky by now. But you aren't anywhere close to your limits yet.

"Ah can keep going!" You say, shaking your fists in front of your chest and hoping to change your mentor's decision.

>"I'm not asking, Walker." The hero replies, in a tone that makes clear there's no room for debate. "All that's left is to make our way back."

>"Are we retracing our steps then, master?" Johai asks, pointing back to where you all came from as if nothing had happened since you last spoke.

Which was about ten minutes ago, but still.

>"No." He swiftly answers, walking towards another side of the roof. "Returning is part of the patrol as well. We are to cover as much ground as we can on way back."

…So you are to keep patrolling then, you think. And almost say it! But you think better in the end.

You aren't sure if he would have done so regardless of what you said, or if he's humoring you, but you really doubt talking about it would make it any better.

It took you hours to get where you saw the attack, but you are to make your way back in what feels like a single hour of running and jumping through the smoggy Yokkaichi night, from rooftop to rooftop, utility pole and street, still making sure that the odd passerby not only saw you, but recognized the hero when they did.

There's one major stop before you reach the tower, however.

"What's that weird hole there?" You ask, pointing at exactly that.

It's not easy to see in the night, even with the public lights, but on one of the large rocky hills in the city you can see a clearly man-made vertical cut, at least 60 feet tall and about 6 feet wide, with the edges partly overgrown with moss, with what looks to be a corroded sign next to it.

>"...The old quarry." Johai answers, as if you had asked him the color of the sky.

>"Yokkaichi may now known for its industry and ports." Your mentor starts, stopping your rooftop run to explain, being far more helpful than the smaller ninja. "But as any milennary city, that wasn't always true. The city was named for its markets, but it was the stoneware that brought fame to ancient Yokkaichi. Few still practice the old stone-working ways, and none dare enter the maze-like quarry, but its history keeps the city from closing it."

"So, that's an underground maze, open for anyone to get lost in?" You ask, wondering if you are the only one seeing a problem with that.

>"The sign clearly states that it's dangerous, and that you are not to enter." Johai says, pointing at the reddish-green slab of metal on the rock wall. "The coal gases built up in there, you must have a deathwish to venture in."

What do you do?

>[Really? "And no one has gotten lost in there? Really?"]

Tell them to send one or two scout drones (camera and sensors for echolocation and tunnel mapping) to avoid human casualties (One of the Top 10 heroes probably has access to a lot of cool gadgets) and mix it with >>3672279

Johai's a stiff, sure. He looks down on us because we play it a bit loose.
He's an uptight, by-the-book douchebag, But bawling him out won't change that.
We just have to prove him wrong about us, make him rethink things through our actions.
We play this right, we can get a good buddy-cop dynamic going. Remember that Riggs and Murtaugh pretty much hated each other at the start of Lethal Weapon 1.
>>
>>3672744

Super powered Lethal Weapon would be super cool (no pun intended)
>>
I can already see Johai giving us a hard case about not having any criminals that would have the resources to mount a base in the mine.

Just for Ushi to retort about the idiots that invaded U.A. and saying that even if they were idiots they were smart enough to get All Might schedule and infiltrate U.A. oh not to mention the teleportation guy who is able to move everyone so then being able to mount a base without anyone seeing isn't unlikely.
>>
>>3672744
I see them as more of a Rush Hour (because that’s the buddy cop movie I’ve seen.)

You stare at the quarry a bit more, feeling like the unease in your gut deserves addressing, even if it's supposedly poisonous.

"...Has anyone checked inside lately?" You ask, pointing at the somewhat hidden entrance.

>"What do even you expect to find?" Johai asks, waving his hand at the same entrance, almost slapping your hand away from the dubious landmark before pulling his arm back.

For a brief second you expect it to be some sort of regret, then he starts slowly gesturing.

>"Coal gas, Carbon Monoxide. Is. Toxic." He explains as if you were five years old. "There's no feasible way to clean that place up, it'd be far too expensive for anyone to do it, and flat out impossible to do without anyone noticing."

"Oh, bless your heart hun… You know what else was impossible? Storming U.A." You start by asking and tapping your chin, then continue without giving him any time to answer. "But Ah reckon anythin' 's possible if you get enough idiots together."

>"If it eases your mind, it wouldn't take much effort to get it checked tomorrow." Your mentor interjects, staring resolutely at the quarry, his silhouette against the moon before jumping off, prompting you to . "But for tonight, it's time to get you back to the tower safely."

>"Master, you don't believe there's anyone inside, do you?" Johai asks hesitantly, using the same nut-and-string trick from before to catch up to the hero instead of following alongside you.

>"I do not." The hero says, running and jumping over the cityscape as he speaks. "But Walker's words bring old worries to mind. If there's some villain somewhere with enough influence to bring all those petty villains together, it means they are getting organized again after all these years. This is no time to trust assumptions of safety."

"Yeah!" You say, trying to close up the distance. "Wait, what'cha mean?"

>"Our hero-centered society has stood unchallenged for decades, keeping a tight lid upon its villainous underbelly, with even the most notorious incidents of these times being nothing but small releases, doing little to relieve the pressure the Dark Ages showed it capable of." Edgeshot explains.

And his words make your skin crawl. There's no speaking of what was done during the Dark Ages, and that's just what's on record.

>"So we need to remain steadfast, ever watching! If the villains of Japan are coming together, if they are preparing for a revolt… It's our sworn duty to see it undone." Your mentor says, his resolute voice cutting the night's sounds and demanding your attention. "It may not happen soon, if it happens at all…But every step we can take to keep the public sleeping safe at night is a step that must be taken."

>"...I see." Johai replies, sounding like he was as taken aback as you were.
>>
When you return to your room, you aren't sure what to think of the night. It's only 3AM, but you saw a villain attack an innocent, tended to his injuries and saw the man taken away by an ambulance… But that's hero work, right? Then came the foreboding talk with the ninjas at the quarry…

And what your mentor said to you before he left to finish his patrol.

>"You are taking breakfast with me tomorrow, Walker." He said, taking three steps before pivoting on his heel. "...Because we have much to talk about. Nothing else."

...As if he had fooled you. He obviously wants more homemade bread.

Still, that doesn't make the night less exhausting, nor your costume less sticky.

>What do you do?
