You're barricaded in one of Malgrave's old forgotten torture chambers.
Taking some time to recover your strength.
The soft pattering of rain and distant dripping can be gently heard.

You decide to ask Alwyn if she can tell you anything about demons, I mean she *is* here to hunt them down.
>"Do you know much about these demons, or why they might know who I am?"
Lady Alwyn: "No, the demons we fought earlier were part of the rogue faction. I assume whoever created them knew you (or knew of you) are and told them about you. Have you met any greater demons or cultists in the past?"
>"I have not. And I have no idea why some random demon would know of me."
Lady Alwyn: "Then who knows, I confess it does make me feel a bit suspicious of you."
>"Trust in me, I am a man of honour! If not the rogues what about your quarry Al'gokoz, is there anything you can tell me about him?"
Lady Alwyn: "Hmm? Well he conjures deadly throwing spears as his weapons and uses powerful evocation magic. I heard he also has the power to grant wishes to mortals, probably just hearsay.
He's appeared a few times in recorded history, and he always becomes a massive problem if left to fester and cultivate an army of demons and cultists. It's best to smite him immediately. Which is exactly what I plan to do."
She slaps you on the shoulder.
Lady Alwyn: "I'm glad to have you and yours at my side."

(By discussing Al'gokoz with Alwyn you have gained permanent bonus damage against him)

...

You've still got a little more time to kill before it's time to continue.
You're tempted to talk with Larissa a little, since she's apparently taken such a huge interest in Ulric. But you decide instead to spend some time with Alina.
You join her sitting on the rack.
She smiles at you as you join her.
Alina: "This place is pretty serene, uh, for a ancient dusty torture chamber that is. What's up Christof?"

You lean in and hushly ask.
>"What do you think of Alwyn and her party?"
Alina briefly looks over her should and leans in.
Alina: "I can't believe we just stumbled on a friendly party of adventurers. They're all women too, what's up with that!? I thought female adventurers were rare.
I'm pretty suspicious of them. Especially her."
She points to Larissa.
Alina: "Warming up to Ulric like that, she's a predator that one."
>"Feeling a little jealous?"
Alina: "pfft. No."
>"If they turn out to be tricksters we'll handle them"
You suddenly feel a slight headache and dizziness, it lasts a few seconds and vanishes.
Alina: "Are you alright?"
>"I'm fine, just a headache, hey nice work out there today. I know this is a difficult environment to cast in. And finding this place was really helpful."
Alina: "Thanks! I try my best."

Alina has gained a temporary +30 to her spellcasting attempts

It's almost about time to get going. Anything you want to do before you head deeper into the castle?

You and Alina cast Protection from Evil on everyone.
It protects from charm, possesion, and increases armour class!

You unbolt the heavy doors and cautiously venture into the castle corridors.
Deeper you delve into the East wing with your 8 allies. You find Cultists guarding the entrance to a barracks.
Peeking corner you see them keeping watch. You suppose this must be the Cultists' base.

There are only two of them but there's also a large loud looking gong that could summon reinforcements.
One of thems unarmed too. Likely a magic user.
Lady Alwyn: "Well? shall we charge in?"

>wat do?
>>
>>3636492
Damn, unless one of our team has something like Hold Person, I think we should try a combo of strategies.
Have Christof swig the potion of minor speed and step out trying to "talk" to the two. Approach walking quickly and trying to distract them. Maybe asking them for help or directions? Stick to the left wall. Charge at full speed at the first sign of spellwork or moving to the gong. The charge signals the rest to full attack with ranged fighters moving to the right to fire and the others charging.
>>
>>3636492
>>3636564
Also, if the gong gets rung, Alina should drop what she's doing and cast Hold Portal on that door until we paste these two.

You confirm your strategy with your teammates and swig a potion of minor speed.
You step out to try to talk to the sentries but the very instant they see you approaching peacefully one of them raises the alarm.
Your allies charge in to support you.
Alina casts Hold Portal on the barracks doors. But she's already maintaining 4 Protection from Evil Spells, she needs a 50 or lower to succeed under all the strain.
The two cultists get ready to fight, the unarmed one begins casting a spell.

You are sneak attacked from behind by Alwyn for 32 damage. Treachery!
Lady Alwyn and her entire party have become hostile to you. And have positioned themselves behind you to block your escape route.
Alwyn: "Sorry Christof, but this is as far as you go."
Shawel: "Disgusting. Death to all betrayers!"

Alwyn and her girls shed their illusory disguises. They're all demons, all four of them. Terrific.

You throw a Toxin of Greater Weakness at Alwyn. The liquid splashes her and is absorbed into her skin. Seems to effect her fine demon or not.
You retrieve your Rod of Enervation and Zap her for 3 negative energy levels.
An Ice Wall emerges trapping the spell casting cultist in a corner.

Alwyn casts Dispel Magic on you removing your Protection From Evil.
Cultist slashes you for 10 damage
Cultist pounds on the Ice Wall with his fists.
You can hear enemies on the other side of the door banging on it and rapidly jiggling the handles.

~

You power attack Alwyn landing a solid hit for 38 damage.

Alwyn casts Suggestion on you. Without your Protection From Evil and only 1 Int you fail to resist it.
Alwyn: "You should shrug off your Protection From Evil buffs, so you can cast higher level spells."
What a good idea! You do exactly that, Alina, Shawel, Ulric and Olin are no longer protected.
Cultist slashes at you but misses.

~

You attack Alwyn hitting her for 24 damage. Destroying her physical form.
Alwyn: "Ha.. you got me. But you've already lost."
She fades away.

Ulric approaches you from behind. He's been charmed! Or worse dominated. Possibly before the fight even started.
Larissa: "Ulric! You have to stop Christof he's going to kill me!"
Ulric: "no... can't attack Christof..."
He reaches out and his hand glows with healing light. He heals you for 30 hp.
He collapses unconcious. His Int has been reduced to 0.
Alina casts Protection From Evil on you.
Cultist Jabs you for 7 damage

The barracks doors swing open. The Hold Portal must of been dispelled.
Four more Cultists step into the battle.
Cultist: "Crush them all. Let none escape!"

Alwyn is destroyed but her three friends are still a threat. One of them is pretty injured, Likely Ulrics doing before he lost his protection from evil.
Another one is Paralysed! Must of been Olin's doing.
There are 5 Cultists threatening you. and 1 trapped in the ice.

You immediately disengage the cultist and dash back to the rear to destroy the remaining Demons.

You attack the wounded succubus Evys but she Defends you still do 14 damage to her.
Shawel ditches her first Icewall and makes a second Icewall blocking the advancing Cultists.
Alina hits Evys with a Holy Arrow, but it seems to be no more effective than a regular arrow. It does 4 damage.
Olin casts Ghoul Touch on Larissa hitting her for 1 damage. She resists paralysis.

The cultists demolish the Icewall with their weapons and advance to melee range.
Larissa casts charm on Alina, but she resists the effect.
Iliana recovers from paralysis!
Iliana casts charm on Alina. She fails to resist its mind influencing effects.
Alina: "w-wait! Don't hurt her!"

~

You Power Attack Evys she Defends but is still slammed for 17 damage, her physical form gives out and she starts to fade.
Evys: "Mortal fool. My mind will live on."
Olin casts Ghoul Touch on Larissa, hitting her for 0 damage. She fails to resist paralysis.
Shawel punches Iliana right in the mouth scoring a critical hit! doing 9 damage. Iliana resists Knockout.
Alina: "Please, stop this! All of you"
She casts Protection from Weapons[Blunt] on Iliana.
Shawel: "STOP IT ALINA. They're not your friends, you've been BEWITCHED."

Iliana casts Charm on Olin but he easily resists it.
Larissa is paralysed and can't move.
Cultist Sorcerer casts Haste on Iliana.
The 5 Cultists with weapons begin furiously attacking doing 13 damage to you. 37 damage to Olin and 20 Damage to Shawel

There's also a room one the side, you could try to barricade the door, there's a good chance that there's no alternate exit to the room however.

You haven't shaken the Cultists yet, but you're losing them. As you reach the top of the ladder and peer over the edge you see 5 undead warriors, barring your path. You're trapped!
The skeletons advance on you! but one of the undead holds up his hand and the undead soldiers stop in their tracks. Heeding the order as if they were still living warriors and commander.
The Skeleton Knight peels a metal gauntlet from his bony hand and throws it before you, this undead is challenging you!? It flourishes its weapon and stands its ground, waiting for you to try and pass. The lesser undead take several steps back and stand their ground also.

You successfully cast Protection From Weapons[Blunt] on yourself.
You regenerate [blue]3 health[/blue]
Skeleton Knight Flurries you for [red]1 and 2 damage[/red].

~

You attack the skeleton's unarmoured head. He's an easy target compared to the Cultists and your blow connects doing 36 damage.
You regenerate [blue]1 health[/blue]
Skeleton Knight attacks your eyes scoring a [b]Critical hit![/b] doing [red]25 damage[/red].

~

You Power Attack the Skeleton Knight doing 28 damage, despite the considerable damage you've inflicted it shows no signs of slowing down.
You regenerate [blue]6 health[/blue]
Skeleton Knight Jabs you for 0 damage. His hammer crackles with dreadful emerald energy [red]halving your health from 16 to 8[/red]

~

You Power Attack the Skeleton Knight doing 34 damage, compacting his chestplate and audibly cracking his ribs.
You regenerate [blue]2 health[/blue]
Skeleton Knight Flurries you for [red]1 and 1 damage[/red] with the second blow his weapon unleashes the dread energy [red]halving your health from 8 to 4[/red]

The knight has you on the defensive, smelling blood it starts attacking extremely aggressively to finish you.
As you struggle to defend you see Ulric has woken.
Alina and Ulric look like they could intervene any second now, if they do the other 4 skeletons will join in the fight as well.

Do we still have the potion of restoration? If so, drink it. Retreat and let Alina and Ulric finish it, Shawel must keep the ice wall where it is.

>Do we still have the potion of restoration? If so, drink it.
This is good, we need some breathing room.

>>3661357
I like your moxie, but we gotta get some HP.
On the other hand, it'll be a bit of a waste of 32 HP if we drink it and he taps us for half our health.
I say:

>Power Attack
Hope we don't lose more than 3 HP, then
>take that Restoration potion
if he's still standing:
>Power Attack
>Called Shot to the head

That's my two cents.
>>
Any health we recover he will halve the same turn. We need to bank everything on killing him in one swoop.
And if we retreat he might interpret it as a breach of honor, this is a duel after all
>>
You Power Attack the skeletal knight for 34 damage.
The Knight attacks you for 0 damage. Green energy crackles in a burst: your health is halved to 2.

Ulric: "Christof!"
He steps forward to intervene but Shawel puts her arm in front of him.
Shawel: "He wont lose."
Alina: "But he's hurt!"

~

>"Stay back. I can handle this."
You take out your last healing potion: the Potion of Restoration. No time to drink, You smash the glass against your chest, the blessed liquid splashes over you and seeps into the gaps in your armour, drawn to your damaged body like water to a sponge.
Your stamina returns and you deflect the undeads assault knocking him back.
You stand tall, your health fully restored.

He tries to attack your eyes but misses.

~

You Power Attack doing 38 damage. This blow knocks the undead warrior to the floor.
It's barely moving, still animate but no longer able to fight.
You raise your hammer to terminate the undead.
Alina: "Wait! I think this one is controlling the others. If you destroy it they'll go back to their normal behavior!"
With a crunching and tearing sound a cultist breaks through the Ice Wall. He scrambles up the ladder with preternatural speed with his comrades immediately following.
>"Run!"
You dash past the skeleton guards, they make no attempt to stop you, or Alina, Ulric and Shawel.
The Cultists try to follow but are blocked by the undeads' shields.
The Skeleton Knight's bony hand grasps a Cultist's ankle. Time to duel.

~

For slaying your enemies and escaping the pursuing Cultists and defeating the Skeleton Knight.

You run through a door and onto a balcony. Rain is falling in torrents and undead sentries spot you and rush to engage.
Shawel blocks them and Ulric points upwards.
Ulric: "We can climb this rubble up onto the roof!"
>"Good thinking, there weren't any skeletons on the rooftops."
Your party climbs onto the tiled roof, water washing down the slopes.
You find an empty room with part of it's roof missing a short distance from yourself. You carefully but quickly move over and descend into the room.

Alina spots a single door and casts Hold Portal on it immediately.
>"Hold still you three..."
You cast Dispel Magic on all three of them removing their Charm effects.
Ulric: "Shawel, you're really hurt, let me heal you"
Shawel: "You have my thanks Ulric."
Alina: "That was hectic, we lost Olin too."
>"I think he's just playing dead. That's how he survived last time."
Alina: "yeah he had Xs for eyes instead of empty circles, definitely fake."
Shawel: "What is this room? I sense magic."
She lights a torch and leaves it on a nearby sconce.
You hadn't even thought about your surroundings in all the chaos. This square shaped room contains four statues with arcance carvings on their podiums.
Alina: "Statues?"
>"These statues generate spells, they suck magic out of the air and produce magic spells, ready to be tranferred into a spellbook. These particular statues look like they can provide a selection of different spells when they're charged up."
Shawel: "Ah, these contraptions must be responsible for the dry magic in the area, they've been sucking it up to generate spells."
Ulric: "So can you power up your spellbooks with these things?"
>"No, when statues like this are ready to transfer a spell their eyes light up. Someone must have harvested them recently."
Ulric: "What about this one?"
He points to a statue lying under the missing roof, it's become quite weathered.
>"Yes! This one is fully charged. And it holds Abjuration Spells."

Pick one spell to add to your spellbook.

You add Dismissal to your spell book. Words of power flood from the angel statue's podium into your spellbook. A stream of spectral letters flow in.
Alina: "I don't understand this new spell."
>"A shared spellbook has limitations. This spell was too complex to create a formula that can be used by both of us. It seems you wont be able to cast this one."
You check your equipment, no healing potions left. That could be a problem, but as ever you must forge onwards. You have Alina dismiss the Hold Portal and proceed through the d-
Stalker: "You are Christof. I am to escort you to our lair."

We could, like, ask how it knows us, or who they are, or what their goals are, or who ordered them to take us, or how they knew where we were, or where their lair is.
And *then* test our dismissal spell, if we want.
Guys?

If I lose, we should at least say something pithy and cool before casting.

>No need to give that thing another opportunity to deceive us.
There is evidence that there really are two factions of "demons".
*These* ones know us somehow, aren't attacking us, and seemed surprised that we were attacking them earlier.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

Abjuration = 100
-50 from the Spell Level
-30 from the Environment
You need 20 or lower to succeed in casting this.

You feel the spell almost working! But there's not enough magic in the air and you fail to power the spell. It fizzles uselessly.
Stalker: "Your powers are weak, I don't know why the master concerns himself with you. We hold one of the key's you seek. Follow me now or find us in the West Wing on your own."
He takes a few steps back and gets ready for your response.

Stalker: "Yes, he is a human wizard with blue robes, blue mage fire and a blue hat."
Alina: "Salaman. What's he doing consorting with demons?"

"Well, I trust demons claiming to follow Salaman's orders over pretty much any other demon, I suppose. That's not saying much, but we're low on options."

"I guess we'll just have to ask him.
"Take us to your leader, Stalker."
