/qst/ - Quests

You mull over the plans in your mind, making sure you’re not leaving out any details. Of course, there’s many variables, the risk is high, and the reward is possibly still a long way away. But you see no other choice.

Tonight, you, are going to make a escape from the castle...

You assess the risks again. If you are caught, you will likely be placed under more of a watchful eye than ever before. If you’re not imprisoned for treason by your brother, Prince Vinoyl, and his order of corrupt knights. Being the youngest prince is tough, hard to gain respect when the rest of your family has a head start. After your mother and father died while you were quite young, he took over, and kept you “protected.” Feels more like he doesn’t want you meddling in his affairs, or gaining your own renown. When you became older, the most he would have you do is run errands for him. You’re a rightful Prince of Eregron, not a mere servant boy! It ends tonight, or your name isn’t...

Well, what exactly IS your name?

Ah, yes. Prince Liliwin of Eregron, a noble name storybooks will (with any luck) soon remember for eternity to come.

As a royal-blood, you’re directly descended from the bloodline of dragon deities before you. At least, in legend. Long ago, it is said that dragons ruled over humans, until going mad with power. At which point, humans, rallying under those directly descended from the dragons, wiped out their mad gods, securing their independence. Eregron’s dragon deity: Fraisen, is who you’re supposedly descended from. Kind of strange to think your great-times however many-grandmother is a big magical lizard who tried to destroy beings like you a long time ago. But the evidence is in the draconic ability you’ve been gifted with... What was it again?

>Hortivim (Communal and affinity of natural space and geometry...)

Your ability is quite rare, and a little unfortunately so. For as long as you can remember, you’ve been able to see spirits of the recently deceased, or the cursed who cannot move on from the world. This ability has only been recorded in one of your ancestors, King Desmond, known in his reign for solving murder crimes by speaking with the spirits to draw out a culprit. They called it: Praeterivim...

It’s not so helpful for you, the most you get is a visit from some lingering spirit who doesn’t know when to quit. They appear as faceless shells, their voices have an odd echo to them, and their bodies glow. They usually drone on and on about their lives, usually the most mundane parts. Your advisors say that your ability is not yet strong enough, so perhaps you’ll one day learn to actually utilize it for good. Odd how a dragon of life gave you an ability that had to do with death, but so be it.

However, Vinoyl sometimes believes that your ability doesn’t exist. It’s not like you can prove it, nobody else can see them, but they’re there. Vinoyl possesses another rarer ability in the bloodline: Empathivim. In short, he reads minds of those he can gain physical contact with. There’s rumors his ability has more to it, but you’ve never seen any evidence to this. As such, most other nobles aren’t keen on interacting with him, yourself included. You’ve been avoiding him all day, or else he’d learn of your escape plans.

Speaking of, you had a few. The castle has been built high over eons of time, it’s quite difficult to siege. The back is a tall cliff face, there’s going to be no scaling it. The guard won’t let you just walk out, so you see only a couple way of doing this...

>Disguise yourself and sneak out the front gate, you’ve a couple methods...

>Find a hidden secret passage leading directly into the castle town, your only clue a riddle...

This was quite the find you made, it’s not often you’re this lucky. With so much time spent in the castle, your only escape seemed to be that of fiction. The royal library was vast, but after so many years, there isn’t a novel there you haven’t read. But there is some nonfiction you’ve perused as well, recently, an illustrated history of Castle Eregron penned by its most recent architect, who mysteriously perished in an accident when building the final touch to the new castle upgrades: a lavish fountain in the courtyard. The cause of death was drowning, ironically, deemed a suicide. But, before he died, he wrote and illustrated this book detailing the many phases the castle’s architecture went through. You had turned to his own section of the book, where he details the changes he made to the castle in his time, and noticed something odd. His page didn’t seem to detail any of that, instead, an odd riddle followed...

>”Does a snuffed flame still burn? I wish to know, badly. So I shall snuff myself out, and see where my body goes. I wish to be buried with my kinsmen, and dug a tunnel to my old home... Will my soul end up there? Even if my body does not?”

So, he was clearly mad. Perhaps the first tip should’ve been his idea of drowning himself in his own fountain. But you suspect this tunnel he’s built is more than a metaphor, and have been researching the fountain and the architect for a few days, but can’t come to a solid conclusion about either one. The architect’s past is mysterious, except that he was hired on a whim by your late father. The fountain passage you suspect exists is unconfirmed, the builders he worked with remain tight lipped (and very few within these castle walls respect you enough to talk in the first place) and you doubted you could blow it open... Or could you...?

You feel the fountain will be your best bet. Nobody’s going to mind you walking about the castle late at night, as long as you have some kind of alibi. Fresh air should be good enough for the maids and butlers, but the knights will likely suspect you. That, and Vinoyl is quite the late owl as well, you’re usually the sleepier one... They guard the castle graveyard, where trusted members of the staff are buried in death, and likely where this architect lies. His name is Vincent...

How should you go about finally solving this mystery?

>Find a way to “peacefully remove” Vincent’s fountain. (Go looking for explosives.)

Your ability hasn’t exactly brought you much in the past, but maybe that will change now? It’s worth a shot, considering the more explosive option would probably label you a traitor.

You get a good last look at your room, you’ve certainly lived like a prince in terms of housing comfort, but this is likely the last time you’ll see your own quarters. Camping out can’t be that bad, can it?

Next, your supplies. You’ve a small pack with a map, some of your favorite books, a rope, and a good amount of silver. You’ve a shortsword on your hip, you like to think you’re pretty good with it, too. That should be everything for survival for a few days while you plan your next move, adventure awaits...

You push out into the dimly lit halls of castle Eregron, quietly shutting your door and walking off towards the back of the castle.

The graveyard was guarded tightly after hours, to avoid any grave robbers among the staff. You can see two knights patrolling the gate, you’ll need a way in.

You go back behind the wall you were peeking out from. They’d perhaps let you in if you posed as one of them, the barracks and armory are kept locked at night. Fortunately, one of the pins holding your cape together functions well as a lockpick.

You make your way over and commit your first illegal act ever. Likely not your last, with the direction you’re headed in. Only the light of the moon illuminates many racks of swords, lances, and armors. You quickly slip one on. It’s a little big, the helmet specifically wobbles around a little when you walk... But it’ll have to do. You shut the door and slowly make your way out, saluting to any knights you pass by. They awkwardly salute back, some of them chuckle. You do look quite silly.

At any rate, you make it back to the graveyard gate. The guards exchange glances as you approach, and salute you.

“You here to take the next shift? Where’s your partner?” Left says.

“Probably off sleeping, this one’s pretty sleepy too, must’ve put on the wrong size armors.” Right taunts.

The two laugh a bit, but regain their composure. “You uh... The captain did tell you this was a two-man post, right? There may only be one way in and out, but all a brigand needs is for you to look the wrong way for just a second...”

“You new here or something? Awfully quiet too...”

Damn. Not exactly your best plan, but you’re a fan of improvising.

You hastily nod, awkwardly walking back from whence you came.

A partner, it was just one obstacle after another... You couldn’t just run up to any guard and ask them to partner up with you for the shift, but there may be someone who could help you... A few choices come to mind.

You weren’t entirely alone in this life, on top of spirits who would periodically show up and talk your ear off (they just talk, talk, talk...), you had a few people who would maybe agree to be your ally.

The castle chef, Tonio, he was always happy to serve you after hours or lend an ear. When you were younger, he was just in training, and ostracized by those older than him, so he can relate, though he’s not very vengeful like you are. A very “let the world go on” type of person. He’d likely be uncomfortable helping you break the rules, but you could possibly persuade him.

Then, the court mage, Siena. She’s not exactly what you’d call a friend, though. She was a workaholic, taking potions to keep awake. Magic was her passion, and she regularly conducted experiments whenever possible. She was also something of a spy, taking notes on everyone, she had a hyperfixation on psychology. She’s of course interested in studying the abilities granted by Dragon Deities, that included studying you.

You could bring Tonio along with you, or promise Siena that she can watch your spirit communal with Vincent in exchange for help... Other than that, you don’t-

“Hello! 〔´∇`〕”

Dear dragons! You jump so high your armor nearly comes apart... It’s one of those damned spirits again. You can tell, they’re hyperfixated on certain emotions or moments. You turn around to view the spirit. It’s a little girl, can’t be older than 5, and she’s got this happy smile stuck on her eyeless face. Her body glows blue, it’s a spirit all right. You groan, getting ready for her to speak.

“Have you seen my dad around anywhere? He’s the court jester for Lord Ramus, but the king thinks he’s not very funny. The King doesn’t laugh at his jokes, neither do his men... 〔´∇`〕”

You recall King Ramus, your great grandfather... He was a horrible king, abusive to your mother, and the kingdom itself. He was known for hiring lavish entertainment for feasts, then having them all executed. This girl’s account lines up. There’s a moment of silence. You try to walk away.

“Hey? Do you want to hear a joke? I’m a lot funnier than my dad. I swear. Just listen to me and I’ll do anything! 〔´∇`〕”

Anything, she says? Perhaps she can be of use after all. Spirits can interact with the environment, but only at a minuscule level. Still, if she’s strong enough to bring life to an empty suit of armor or something similarly spooky... You doubt she can, though.

What should you do?

Ghost girl and Prince have same abandoned child energy so don't think he can resist her for long. Talk to her while going to the mage tower, then imply to the mage that she gets to study the girl if she comes along with us to get the mage to join our party too.
Ghost looks pretty lonely, she'll be thrilled to have two people to talk to.

Assuming Prince has the constitution of a wet tissue so he needs someone who can reliably fight and mage has dirt on the court to boot.

You sigh a quick “alright, shoot.” And the spirit girl’s smile gets even wider.

“Okay! Listen to this one! Ahem... 〔´∇`〕” She lowers to the ground a little, like she’s actually standing up instead of floating. “My boyfriend wanted me to treat him like a prince for his birthday, so I had him assassinated and took his throne. 〔´∇`〕”

You blink. That hit... A little close to home. She’s just sitting there with this dopey smile on her face. After a long pause, she opens her mouth a little, likely to tell another morbid joke. At which point, you fake laughter as well as you can.

“Oh, thank you! Everyone says my jokes are killer, better than pop’s! 〔´∇`〕“

Despite her favored material topic, you can’t help but sympathize. She seems lonely, like you are. Perhaps you’ll keep her around just awhile longer... You briefly ask for her name.

“I’m Millie, it’s a pleasure to meet you, whoever you are! What do ya need from me? 〔´∇`〕“

You tell her your name, but neglect to mention you’re a descendant of the man who likely executed her father. You’re not sure what a low-strength spirit like her could do for you yet, but you’ll figure it out. Siena could probably help with that.

The two of you make your way down to the mage’s tower, on the east side of the castle, a large spire unguarded and untouched. Siena can handle herself in a fight, and you’re sure the guardsmen don’t want to be subject to any experiments.

You ascend the large spiral staircase to the top, Millie telling a few more jokes along the way, you’re not truly listening. One about a chicken getting trampled crossing a road, another a knock knock joke ending in murder and robbery, all the same you laugh weakly at the punchlines. As you reach the top, you knock on the door, three times. You see a flicker of light from behind it, and it opens, seemingly on its own.

“Yes, yes...” You hear her begin, and then yawn, “enter, please.” She states bluntly. You can see her at that alchemy desk, brewing something. She turns around, and seems surprised at your presence. “Lord Liliwin? I thought a prince had entered but... It’s usually Vinoyl asking to borrow an anti-sleep potion. So, I assume you haven’t finally seen the wonders you can do with eight extra hours in your day, what do you need?” You squint, then take off your helmet. How did she know it was you? “The fright festival isn’t for months, so no need for that costume. It’s not fooling anyone, either, at least not me.” You roll your eyes. Right, she knows your height, demeanor, she likely saw you leave your room or something.

You look over to Millie. Siena can’t see her, but she’s still smiling, zipping around the room and taking in the sight.

You open your mouth to speak, telling her you need entry to the graveyard, and that in exchange you’ll allow her to study you at length.

“Oh? Well, hard to say no to that. Your brother and I have many sessions, testing the limits of his Empathivim... Your gift, I’ve yet to see all these years. How can you show me?”

You nod, here goes nothing...

You lean over to Millie and whisper for her to give another joke to Siena, as loud as she can.

Millie turns to Siena and clears her throat again. “What does a cannibal do after eating a vegetable...? 〔´∇`〕”

Siena’s eyes widen, and she looks in Millie’s direction. She actually heard her! Who knew it was this easy? She chuckles. “I’m not sure, spits it out?” She asks.

“No, he... He sells his false limbs for profit! 〔´∇`〕” Millie says with a giggle. You laugh a little too, whether you actually thought it was funny, or just taken through stockholm syndrome of sorts... Only deities know.

>Prince Liliwin gained Praeterivim: Project Weak Voice! (Illusion I)

Siena laughs as well, with a bit more sincerity. She’s scribbling the joke down on her notepad, using a pencil tucked between her blue hair and her ear. “So, you’ve finally come into your role. Guiding spirits. There isn’t much documentation on the ability, so I’m glad you’re giving me this chance. And to think, I thought of you as something of a brat before.” You quietly groan as she puts her notes away. You explain Millie to Siena, and ask about that favor. “Well, that depends on the favor...”

You don’t want to bring her into this just yet, you need to be sure she won’t sell you out, or that you’re both safe from the executioner’s axe before she knows the truth.

You calmly explain you want to talk to the architect’s spirit, and that the graveyard might house the soul. You also explain how you’re not allowed inside. “So, that explains the armor... You’ve no respect in this castle, I see.” Finally, someone who gets it. “I also see you haven’t exactly had the chance to attain it, very well, I’m intrigued... That architect sure had some screws loose, so perhaps his spirit will have more to say.” She tucks her notebook away and walks forward. “You won’t have to bother with the disguise, either, Lord Vinoyl’s given me permission to conduct research in most branches of the castle, that includes the graveyard. I can have those guards disperse no problem...” You’re sure she could without orders from your brother, a mage could either be a powerful foe or a harmless flea in a battle. They’re rarely born, even in noble houses, and while some magical techniques have been inscribed in tomes for public use, naturally born mages are stronger. It just happens that Siena is a natural-born mage. An asset to be sure, that is until you’re clear of the castle, who knows, Vinoyl could be sending her to hunt you down first...

———

The three (physically, two) of you make your way back. Siena goes forth to work her maniacal magic on the knights blocking your entrance...

“H-halt! Siena, state your business.” Left says, trying hard to remain composed. You can see Right tighten the grip on his lance.

“You boys and all of your superstitions, I’ve been here for such a long time, you can’t really suspect me of treachery now can you? Before that war criminal you call Captain Silas? Well... If you must know, I’m willing to see if my new anti-sleep formula works on the dead.” She smirks. “I got some pretty good results on some pigeons, but I’ve yet to test on a human subject... So, run along, I may be starting the apocalypse in five minutes or so.~”

Right and Left exchange worried glances and walk back towards the barracks. Not noticing you as they pass by.

Finally, some forward progress...

“She seems quite nice! 〔´∇`〕”

———

You are now standing in a large circular chamber. The floor is lined with dirt inbetween the old stone walkways. Rows and rows of graves line the dimly lit graveyard.

Siena already has her notes out. “Whenever you please, do your thing, Prince.”

You’re not seeing any spirits around yet...

You ask Millie to see if any spirits are home at all, it would really be bad to figure out you’re wasting your time here... Maybe Vincent actually passed on, his flame fully snuffed.

Millie nods and floats forth, cupping her hands over her mouth. “Anybody there...? 〔´∇`〕” ...No answer. “Wow... I guess this is a pretty... Dead crowd! 〔´∇`〕”

There’s a single chuckle at Millie’s pun, off in the distance, a grave at the back.

“Someone has finally come to visit me...? (´-`)” The voice sounds like a tired old man. Emphasis on tired. It’s a spirit, alright. But whose? You motion for Siena and Millie to stay put, and walk towards the glow in the distance.

As you come closer, you can see his appearance. You’re right, he died old, and he looks as if he’d just woken up. Yawning, he turns. “I’m surprised someone read my book, or even noticed me... Most of all, a prince like you. (´-`)” So, this spirit was more conscious of his state than Millie was, they had different strength levels perhaps. You explain your suspicion, the secret fountain passage. His eyes light up a little, but he doesn’t exactly seem excited, still as if he’s bored. “I’m holding myself here, I don’t want to go with the deities yet... Who knows what work an agent of light or darkness has to go through? I’ve done enough work in my time alive. I just want to go home, and sleep. But that knight captain told me, I cannot leave without a family to accept me. And when I lost my arm, my family cast me aside... (´-`)” You’re not interested in his life story, you ask him to reveal the secret passage. “The false arm I had... The knight captain kept it, I think his name was Silas. It’s a key, the only way to open the fountain tunnel without removing it. You’re going to need to get it back, if you want to open it up, what are you planning, anyway? Troublesome prince... (´-`)”

This was bad. Vinoyl may have been against you, but that captain is a much more questionable character, hardly subtle either. A “reformed” leader of a barbarian army, he was your father’s retainer before becoming the current captain of the guard. He takes dealing justice a bit too far when he can, in the name of his problematic desires. The only reason he hasn’t been exiled is his relationship with your father, and he hasn’t done anything aside from being a less than respectful knight. But you fully suspect he could be just biding his time to off someone and get a more powerful position. Anyways, you need to get a key off of him.

“He keeps his trophies lined up in a row on his office desk... He’s likely up right now, handling various paperwork... There, that’s all the info I can give. Will you carry me home...?”

You can sense that Vincent’s spirit is stronger than Millie’s, and capable of more abilities... He’d probably make a good asset in your upcoming key heist, if you’re able to direct him...

You stop him as he’s turning away to rest again, giving your best princely speech on how it’s his time to justify all of his actions, and assist you postmortem. You glance back at Siena and Millie, watching you with interest. At the end of your spiel, you give a solemn look at Vincent, and say: “So, will you accompany us?”

...

...

...

He’s unresponsive... Then you hear Vincent snoring. The old fart was sleeping through your entire motivational ploy. Deities damnit all... Millie looks at you with sorrow, Siena’s laughing and scribbling some fierce details, probably updating her thoughts on your skill as prince.

Looks like this was a heist that would have to happen without a strong spirit on your side.

———

You stand a good ways away from Captain Silas’s chamber, carefully explaining the situation to Siena and Millie. Millie simply nods and stands aside, but Siena’s a tough sell...

“His arm unlocks a secret passage in the fountain? Lord Liliwin, you do realize I could have a hole in that fountain with just two snaps of my fingers, right?” She gives you a small scowl. “Feeling cooped up, are we, little songbird? You’re very lucky I get to witness your power developing, I’ll assist you, but as for accompanying you beyond here...” She smiles right at you, with a gaze that taunts. “I’m undecided.~ For now, how do you propose we go about this? Silas doesn’t trust me anywhere near him, and isn’t afraid to show it, I’m sure he’d do so violently...”

This was going to be tough, but you feel this would be your final challenge in escaping the iron grip placed on you... A shame Siena likely won’t be joining.

With that, she floats off through the office door.

Siena gets her notepad out and begins to scribble anew. “Hope you know what you’re doing...”

———

You are now Millie.

You can see the man known as Captain Silas sitting at his desk, furiously signing various documents. His room is quite large. One wall is adorned with weapons, another a lavish painting of a battle scene, and above his desk is a shelf with many objects. Sounds like what you’re looking for...

This Silas guy is supposedly a killer, that makes you want to giggle just a bit. But you know he’ll come after your new friends if he realizes what’s happening. You need to be careful... You’re not the strongest, but you shall try anyway.

What’s your move?

>Slowly lift the key... 〔´∇`〕(Roll 1d20, 12 or higher for success)

You get an idea, to get him away from that desk. Something of a practical joke, which, as a Jester’s daughter, is something of an expertise for you.

You float out one of the windows, ignoring the long fall down, just because you’re floating doesn’t make it any less imposing. You focus all your strength and bang on the window once. It only creates a small tap... But it’s enough for the captain to look up. You tap twice more, prompting him to stand. He takes a rapier off the wall, and gets this twisted look in his eyes.

You float back inside and watch him, he slowly moves to the window, throwing it open and taking a stab outside. Seeing that he hasn’t hit any mark, he grunts. “That better have been just a bird, or whoever thinks they can best me will rue the night they were born...”

That was funny, you laugh, he was seriously ready to kill! But he’s walking back to the desk, sword still in hand, it wasn’t enough...

>Go for the window, need more power to break it!〔´∇`〕

Now you think up something really funny, if more for you than for him. You float over to the desk, and as Silas dips his quill into the ink well, you focus your strength to knock it over in the direction of his paperwork. He quickly curses and snatches up the pages, looking around for the cause of the disturbance, but finding nothing.

You laugh, unable to keep yourself quiet enough so that the tangible ones can’t hear. This sends Silas into a frenzy. He shouts a few more obscenities at nobody in particular, then takes his blade and storms off, likely to go report the incident.

You briefly wonder if this was worth it... As long as you get the key out now, he can’t prove the existence of anyone like you!

You move up to the shelf, in the center is a false arm with a strange piece on the end where the hand should be... Sounds like what you came to grab. When you attempt lifting it, you find it very tough to handle with your strength. If you were a bit older it’d be okay... But it’s taking all you have not to drop this thing!

That comes to the final obstacle. The door. He closed it shut... You could float through, but you can’t carry the key through, since it’s solid. You feel a burning desire to carry it through anyway...

>Carry the key through. 〔´∇`〕 (Illusion~Roll 1d20, best of 3, success = 15 or better)

>Try to knock on the door, your friends may come open it! 〔´∇`〕(Roll 1d20 for success, best of 3, success =12 or better)

You take a deep breath in and out, and try to slam the key into the door to signal you’re trying to get out.

Unfortunately, the most you can muster is a light inaudible tap. But it’s starting to feel easier to lift things. Perhaps even as you are, you can get better if you keep trying!

For now, you need a faster way out of here... You gently place the key on the ground, and float over to one of the long halberds on the wall. You go to the back of the room to get some speed, you’ll need it with your lackluster strength.

You ram it into the door with all your might plus the momentum. A few more pushes, and the door splits wide open. You drop the halberd, grab the key, and flee the room...

———

You are now Prince Liliwin, and you’re not really sure what else you were expecting. You can see Millie carrying the strange arm piece towards you, just moments after a commotion followed by Silas storming off away from you. Then, the door came down.

You quickly grab the key off of Millie, who seems quite exasperated. You scold her lightly for the trouble, but know she wasn’t exactly the strongest for the job. It matters little now. The three of you rush back to the graveyard, before Silas figures out he’s been had and mobilizes the guard onto you, you need to open the passage.

Vincent wakes up slowly, but his eyes widen at the sight of his old false arm returned to him. “I didn’t think you had it in you... Maybe you really can fulfill my wishes, troublesome prince. (´-`)” You don’t like him calling you that, but he’s not exactly lying is he? “Right, the fountain, (´-`)” Vincent gets off his arse, and begins to float like Millie does. “I’ll instruct you on its use... (´-`)”

———

The main courtyard is empty, luckily for you. The water comes from a natural aqueduct under the castle, and from here flows into the town. If there were anywhere to hide a passage, it was here.

Siena places a hand on your shoulder before you walk in. “I’ve made my choice, I’ll continue my studies from afar. Unfortunately, that means you won’t have my aid from here on...” You sigh, having expected something like this. “My lord, as intriguing as I find your ability and the adventures it may bring, Vinoyl won’t be happy at your departure, he’s felt enough loss for a life.” Oh, so sad, you lost the same set of parents. You just weren’t as old as he was, big whoop. “Silas even less when he figures out how you did it. I’ll keep your secret safe, but I can’t come with.”

I don't want to take her with us because our brother will have greater need of her and if we steal powerful magician he will have great incentive to put much more resources into finding us.

We should ask her if she could give us something that could help us. Map, money, potions, book that would allowe us to learn magic.

She's got dirt on our bro's abilities, we need her. Besides she can always pass off her absence on her going on a study expedition, which might work until we're far away from the castle that we can't be dragged back easily.

You can’t help but feel at a disadvantage with her missing from your team. Siena’s probably got pages upon pages of mind reading experiments, secret techniques of Vinoyl’s, and weird psychotherapy session transcripts for you to look into. It’s true, Siena would probably be best to keep Vinoyl calm after your sudden disappearance, but you desire her company and power more.

You look into her eyes and plead with her, one last time, to assist you. Your ability has been nothing but an annoyance for so long, and now it’s finally panning out, thanks to her... You promise she won’t regret the decision, even if it is true you’re not as strong as your brother, you’ll never know until you’re out there chasing legends on your own.

She sighs, and reaches into the pocket of her cloak, but it’s not her notepad she produces... It’s a smaller book, a sigil of flame etched on the cover. “I know you prefer the blade, but if I’m going to come with you, you should learn some magic... I never got to teach your brother, he’s a stubborn pacifist, it does him well in some aspects, others? Not so much...” She gives you a more serious look. “I understand your dislike for him, hard to live in someone’s shadow for so long, but I want to know... How far are you planning to take these feelings?”

>”They’ll be fuel, to stoke the flames of adventure within me.”

>”I’ll prove him wrong, I’ll make him regret not considering me for a king, even if it’s at the end of my sword.”

>”I’m done being his little prince, this journey is for me alone.”

You calmly explain your plans once your escape is finished.

To be honest with yourself, you’ve been useless all your life, but it’s not entirely your fault. Vinoyl has always said you’d have your time in the sun, and then turns around and cages you within the darkness. Does he mean well for the kingdom? Maybe, but so do you, why can’t you even leave? He may be king, but he’s a hypocrite and a fool. Even still, you don’t have plans of simply overthrowing him, you want to outwork him. You’ve heard legends of dark spirits in the land, monsters, not to mention two of the realm’s six kingdoms are at a seemingly thoughtless war... This isn’t time for revenge, that can come after, this is a time for proving your superiority in other ways, helping others, seeing the world. This was an adventure, one you needed, one that possibly the world needed.

Siena nods. “Then, you and I have no issues... I can handle the backlash, if you’re so sure of the end result.” She gives a concerned look, maybe she’s not really sure of her confidence in you, you’d have to justify her investment even more somehow. That’s what you were already after...

“If we’re done talking, I have a home to get back to! (´-`)” Vincent’s spirit alerts.

“Yeah, let’s travel out of here six feet under!〔´∇`〕” Millie exclaims.

You approach the large fountain. Vincent stays next to you while Siena and Millie stand back.

“Okay... You see up there...? The royal crest? In the center should be a small hole, and my arm fits perfectly. (´-`)” He explains. You look where he points. Sure enough, the lion carving at the top of the fountain stares down at you. But there’s a small opening in the nose, your ticket out.

>Climb up there and insert the key yourself.

>Have Millie lift the key up there, much safer if anything strange happens. (Jester Millie~Physical)

>Vincent’s being quite lazy for how powerful he seems, tell him to do it! (Engineer Vincent~Physical)

>>Have Millie lift the key up there, much safer if anything strange happens. (Jester Millie~Physical)
We need to get her more practice with manipulating objects.
>>
You walk over and instruct Millie on what to do. She looks pretty tired, but up to the task.

Millie hovers to the top, carrying the key in her hands. Luckily, she does not drop it. Into the lion’s maw goes the key, and after some time getting it to fit in all the right spots, Millie lets go. Looking quite proud of herself...

>Jester Millie’s physical abilities improved... (1/3)

“Nothing’s happening, has our plan died? 〔´∇`〕” Millie asks.

“Turn the key a quarter to the right, half way to the left, and then push it in! (´-`)” Vincent answers. You’re glad your spirits at least get along, if they aren’t the most comfortable to be around.

Millie does as asked, giving a triumphant shove of the key. It clicks in place. Suddenly, you hear something shut. Then, the water begins to overflow. The drains were what closed. But what does causing the water to flood the fountain do? Vincent looks on with eager eyes, and eventually, something else snaps. A large portion of the fountain collapses, along with a chunk of the courtyard’s foundation itself, allowing the water to flow back down into the depths again. That was a pretty loud sound, better get moving!

(Continued...)

You and your party peer down into the natural drain, glancing at eachother, as if expecting a tunnel to magically materialize. You ask Vincent what to do next.

He gives you a funny look, then closes his eyes. There’s a long silence, and you don’t understand, was this some piece of hidden wisdom he had for you to decipher? A test of your skill once more?

“Zzz... (´-`)”

Dragon’s sakes... He’s sleeping. He falls down into the hole, as if gravity actually affects his spirit. Siena looks at you inbetween confused scribbles.

You try your best to explain that the correct action seems to be jumping DOWN the long pit. At this revelation, she takes another glance down, and then gives an expression as if she doubts you’re actually talking to spirits. “This is your debut, so you’re going first, my lord.~” She says the title with a bit of a sarcastic flair. You roll your eyes.

She’s right. You can see Millie already moving to follow Vincent, lucky she can float. You’re still shackled by the laws of physics for the most part... After a deep breath and a reflection on your journey thus far, you take a step forward and jump.

...

But not before taking Siena’s hand, no way she was getting out of this.

———

A long fall of screaming was cut short by the muffle of murky water covering your ears. It was deep enough to land in, thank the gods, and you quickly swim to the surface.

You look around, you can faintly see Millie and Vincent at the shore of a catacomb entrance, but Siena nowhere to be found after you forced her to jump at the same time as you. You witness a few bubbles pop up from below, sure enough, the mage surfaces. She’s got the worst scowl you’ve seen from her than ever before, and it’s solely directed at you...

“You’re okay?” She asks, clearly angered at the fact. You nod, and ask her the same. “You should be glad I had my notebooks in a waterproofing solution... There’s no telling the acts I’d commit if I lost any research like this.”

You think it was worth it.

The two of you pad your way to the catacomb entrance, and climb onto the stone floor. You’re both soaked, your royal cape loses all of its elegance like this... Millie is trying to shake Vincent awake.

“Hey, hey! Mister, do you ever get TIRED of sleeping? 〔´∇`〕” She jokes.

Vincent groans, that one was apparently bland enough to get his attention. He slowly gets to his feet, realizing where he is. “...Okay, follow me, I’ll take you to my old home. Then I can finally get some true sleep, and you can be on your way having done your good deed, Prince... (´-`)”

As he begins walking, you take a look up. You wonder how long it will take Vinoyl to send people to hunt you down, or who he will send... He’s a pacifist, he’d only want you captured, but even that is a fate worse than death. He may never let you leave again... All the more reason. You need to make him see you can be stronger...
