/qst/ - Quests

You are Octavian, a stuffed rabbit belonging to person named Alice.

You are also a being capable of contracting magical powers to people. For a while, you've been thinking of making a contract with Alice. It will be mutually beneficial.

Your owner lives in a cult, within a vast field in a place that's called Wisconsin. The people here are really self-sufficient, farming and maintaining livestock with the help of technology and the grit from their seclusion. On the not so bright side, they are incredibly wacko.

She is going to be sacrificed tonight to their god. Was it mentioned that it was nighttime? It is. The cult wants to incarnate a god into the world so that it can bring peace. It is extremely unlikely that that's going to happen.

What do you ought to do?

Go stop the sacrificial ceremony and save Alice.
You are in Alice's room. Stay there and wait.

The people of the cult will be coming soon. Looking outside of Alice's bedroom window shows you that some houses within the field have their lights on. They must be preparing then.

Hopping down from the window you climb to Alice's bed. With a gentle push on her face she wakes up. Seeing her favorite doll standing on its own is enough for her to wake up fully. "Octavian?!" she was about to say. You had covered her mouth to keep her from being too loud.

In a gentlemanly voice that in no way goes side to side with your fluffiness, you explain what's going on. "Surprised? Sorry if you are. You have not seen this part of me yet."

Hush, Alice looks at you from head to foot. You have no toes. "A dream?"

"It is far from a dream, Alice. This is real."

The girl pinches herself. Not satisfied, she pinches harder till she accepts that, yes, you are indeed walking and talking like it's nobody's business. "Since when could you do this?! I must show Father Flounder!"

Her innocence is not appropriate for right now. You dodge her grab and make yourself clear. "Alice, listen! God gave us a super secret mission!"

She stops in the process of grabbing you again. "A mission? Like what?"

"It's... A surprise! We will have to sneak outside for it!"

Alice is the only child in the cult. There are couples that can birth more but a strict policy of "No children until our god has arrived" have stifled any new babies.

Jumping down from her bed you swing your arms wildly to have her come with you. You tell her to keep quiet so that the other people in the house, guards, won't notice. She isn't familiar with the concept of a mom and dad but the cult has done a good job in making themselves appear as her family. The guards, Shirley and Joseph, act as her older brother and older sister to kill two birds with one stone. To continue the charade in close spaces and to have an eye on her.

In the dark you hear a creak in the floor. Alice hears it too and freezes. Yourself peeking over a corner, you see that it's Joseph in the house's living room. With him is a bundle of rope and an excited smile. "Ooooh, I can't wait!" he says.

"Wait for what?" Alice questions. You hush her again. Joseph seemed to have heard, now searching the room that he's in.

"What was that? A mouse? I was sure that those traps that Tenni lent me would do the trick." Him going over to where you and Alice are at is only a matter of time.

If he's looking for a mouse then you'll give him a mouse. Scurry around so that he mistakes you for one and possibly let Alice slip by to the kitchen's backdoor.
Sneak to his general area and have him find you. When he least expects it, give him the jump!

In the ear of Alice you tell her what to do. "When Joseph is distracted go to the kitchen's backdoor. Quietly."

"Why does Joseph have rope?"

"That's not important. He is just preparing for something tomorrow, like always."

She stares at the searching man in the living room blankly to come up with an response for herself. "Yeah, he is someone who would be prepared for something big. Does he have something to do with the surprise?"

"No, he does not. And it will be more fun that way!" you reasoned. "Now hurry. You wouldn't want to ruin our mission, is that right?"

Alice ready to sneak by Joseph, you get low on to the ground. You pretend to be a mouse to have him occupied since that is what he wants presently. The light isn't turned on, a way that Joseph intended to not have Alice awake. But it isn't the case anymore. Into the dark open area, you scurry by the walls with your best portrayal of a mouse's sound.

"I hear it again. Don't think that you're in the dark that I can't find you. Been playing in places without light since I was a child! Now where are you?" Joseph said. He catches glimpses of you, leading himself away from the escaping girl in the back. As he is, she opens the kitchen's screen door delicately to keep it from creaking, herself slipping through the small crack and closing it just as carefully.

Seeing Alice leave you then not bother with Joseph. You wing it, looking for an entrance. Alice sees that you're having a hard time, and still by the screen door she cracks it again so you can pass. "A draft?" Joseph says when Alice held the door for too long. You almost made it. She closed it to cover for herself and you squish yourself on the side of a kitchen cabinet. When the man's line of sight is clear, the girl opened the door for a third time and you slip by without fail. "Far into the fields! That's where the surprise is!" you say to Alice. The cult is generally in the center of the field that it inhabits. She picks a way to go, in a direction away from the cult you preferred, and went with you running alongside her.

The cult's settlement is small in the horizon. All of its lights are on, people there probably looking for their sacrifice. You and your owner have ran far enough to be inside the middle of sprawling hills. Alice needs you to walk in the dark because your vision's better at this hour. "Where's the surprise? Octavian?" the sheltered 14 year old says.

So what does the contract entails? Not that we should care because its our job, but we need to know the details before we say or do something that creates our downfall.
>>
>>3618691
Wow, that's rather benign. Nice.
>>
>>3618652
(Correction, want to make it simpler.)

You live off of contracts. The contracts that you make with people give them magical powers.

"What do you want in life"
"I want to be rich."
"You can make that possible if you make a contract with me."

*He/She makes a contract with you and get magical powers while you get to continue living

"I want to be rich" won't let you live as long if it were to be "I want to be the richest person in the world".
The contract expires only until the contractee dies, effectively giving them magic for the rest of their life. Several contracts can be made at a time.
>>
>>3618706
Honestly, i would have expected some madoka levels of contracts, but its refreshing to see that they are that straight forward.
>>
I feel like playing into the messenger of god theme is a bad idea, the cult is already gonna scar her pretty badly whenever she finally figures out about it (and I doubt she'll remain in the dark forever, maybe not even til the end of the night)

Getting her to understand the situation might help her make a more serious wish, but could also have her in disbelief, and I don't think we're the type to let her be moments away from death via sacrifice just to scare her into granting us more power or loyalty.

I'm voting for the offering up a contract now, and then trying to explain her town is actually trouble, that way if things turn sour she has the ability to defend herself, though hopefully she'll be willing to run away with us.

Maybe not tell her the town is bad until tomorrow morning, when we've made it to town, but contract time should be now in case of trouble.
>>
>>3618735
But then how are we going to get her away from the cult? The only reason she is following us right now and not preparing herself to be killed is because we told her we have a super-duper important mission from god.

You stop Alice from walking. The invisible clouds in the sky have gave way to the moon, shedding some light on where you are. She doesn't know why you had stopped her, looking down at you. "Is there something, Octavian? Where's the surprise? We have been walking for a long time, and my feet are starting to hurt. Are we going back?"

"Actually, I have the surprise with us!" Your manly voice melds poorly with a cheeriness that you project. "I'll answer your questions about going home later. But for now, I want to show you it."

"You have it? Where is it," Alice says. On her knees, she pats you all over to feel for an item that you don't have.

"It's an intangible surprise, Alice," you tell her.

"What does intangible mean?"

"Something that can't be physically touched."

"Oh. You mean like God? Father Flounder says God is like that."

"That's a way to put it. Speaking of God... He wants you to become something greater. I'm His messenger, and the message I have is the surprise I've been telling you about!"

"You are?! That's amazing! Are you an angel? Is that why you can talk and walk?" Alice barrages you with questions that are too fast to give answers to. You have her calm down with the questioning so you can get things moving.

"Do you know what a contract is, Alice?"

"It's... A paper that you sign. That's what the people at home say."

You shake her head. It looks like explaining what a contract is will take up more time than it is needed. If that is so then you'll switch the scope of your question. "What do you want? What is something that you really, really want for yourself?"

Alice thinks. Thinking hard with a knuckle at her head, she takes a long time to give you something to work with. "I know!" she shouts. "I want to be like Father Flounder! He says that he and everybody else will bring peace to the world, and I want to do just that. Every Sunday, he would teach me how bad stuff must be corrected and what are the right things. So I'll take his sermons to heart and prove myself that I can help make the world a better place too!"

Holding out your hand to Alice, you say, "Is that what you want?"

"I do," she says with an innocent smile. "I also want to make the world better for the babies that the people at home are going to have. I would like to play with them and watch them grow, then I can have more friends!"

"Then that is a promise. Shake my hand, please."

Not knowing why you asked her to, the girl took your arm whole and shook it. A vibrant light glowed between your hands which shoots into the heart of Alice. "O-Octavian?! What just happened?!" she says, standing up and panicking.

"Alice, you can do that now. Making the world a better place is possible, because you have acquired the powers to. With me at your side, of course, a guardian angel, you can bring peace to the world like you had said!" As her long-time friend, if not the only friend she has, you'll be watching over Alice. For a very long span of time at least. Having her go on a rampage because of her discovering the real motives of Father Dickface (Flounder) and his cult will cause nothing but the bad. And you can imagine the destruction that will be caused by a maddened magical girl.

Alice was about to reply before the area in the chest where her heart lies began to glow. She flashes into colors, dressed in clothes that took the place of her t-shirt and shorts a second ago. Loosely, a habit. Termed "loosely" because it had sacrificed the ordinary pious appearance of a usual habit for an overhaul in fashion. The veil does not hide her hair and the rest of the dress is slimmer than being baggy.

"Wawawah?! My clothes!" Alice says.

You ask Alice to hold your arms again so you can change her back. Linking yourselves together, the transformation is reversed and her appearance is what is was before. Although you can't dictate the availability of her powers, you can turn off or on the costume change if she needs it. And she will for about a couple days, a week at worse to get the hang of things. "All better," you say. "I had to undo your transformation manually myself."

"Did that light have anything to do with that? I never would have thought to wear that kind of outfit. That's something alike how Father Flounder would wear, and it made me feel unworthy to adopt a similar look... Oh yeah! You said something about power? What did you mean?"

"You are able to use magic because of the promise you and I made. I will get you to understand it more, but in the morning. We'll have to continue walking before we settle down somewhere to sleep," you say.

"Why's that? This magic you showed me is incredible! Can I not share it with home?"

"You cannot. Sorry."

"Huh? But

"You're going to make the world a better place, remember," cutting Alice off. "We can't do that if we won't travel outside of our comfort zone. It may be sudden but we must go. The others back home will understand and I'm sure that they would want you to carry on with this new mission. Come one!"

Running up ahead you have her follow. She isn't used to not saying goodbye and the suddenness of her leaving doesn't go well with her, as can be seen on her face. However, she trusts you and wouldn't want to make her promise for naught in returning. Alice catches up to you in the night, not aware of the fate that was about to befell on her and the current problems at the cult. "W-Wait up! I'm coming!" she said. And looking back, "... Bye!"

As an anomalous being, you don't have the need for sleep. You had let yourself be be hugged tight while Alice slept, her legs tucked into her shirt to preserve warmth. When the cult's village's lights couldn't be seen in the horizon behind you, you had both rested by a road. Dawn is cracking.

In the arms of the girl you pat her cheek. Little by little does Alice wake under the first rays of sunshine within the empty hills of Wisconsin. She yawns, wipes her eyes with a hand which has you break free from her, and looks around herself. "What time is it," she says. Her head must be pretty foggy, her talking coming out as lost.

"It's morning," you say, stating what time it is in general. "I've said that I would help you understand your new powers in the morning. But if you're not feeling up to it, we can wait till later, Alice."

"Oh no, it's fine!" the girl says. Reminding her of the events last night pumps her up. "There isn't much to do but walk. I'd like to do something fun in between the times! If I get better at handling what has been given to me by an agent of God, I could come back home and show them everything I'm going to do! Let's start, Octavian! Let's start!"

"If you so in the mood, then it's fine. We're lucky to be somewhere out in the open. It'll be useful for whatever happens," you say, since powers vary from person to person.

"Magic has a certain feel to it, Alice," you say to her. It has been 20 minutes since dawn that which the sky overhead is progressively turning into brighter blues. Alice is standing up straight, legs apart mirroring eachother, and arms facing outward with hands spread. "It's similar to feeling your blood flowing inside of yourself. You have to have that gut feeling on demand to control the output of your powers unless it'll be too weak to conjure. Weak minded have trouble doing this but I believe that you aren't one. You're quite the opposite, imaginative and creative." She hears your pep talk and interprets your instructions for her powers to come to light.

"I... Yeah, I can feel it! How's that?!" she happily says.

"That's great. Don't let it go away and have it become intense inside of your body. It must become vivid as if there's something living inside you!" you continued to encourage.

Alice closes her eyes to focus on the sensation. Overtime her expression begins to turn disappointed. "Sorry, Octavian, I lost it," she tells you.

Walking over to where she is you ease her peace of mind. "It's nothing to be sorry about. You got up on a great start. Can you reimagine the feeling?"

"Kinda," looking at her hand. "But it's softer now." The grin she had has drooped into a small frown. Her expectations have be high ever since you told her about this. She the dislikes thought failing, or wasting what's been given to her as that habit been drilled when she was living at the cult's village. Their teachings of "always be thankful" is not necessarily bad, but the effect that it has on her makes her feel guilty.

... From Alice's stomach, a growl. Embarrassed, she apologizes to you. "Sorry. I haven't ate since last night."

"It's okay," you tell her. "Not that a doll should be offended."

With only one way left to go, you and Alice walk along the right side of the road. The way appeared endless as it crossed over numerous hills. But at the same time, the clear view of the long strip and the area around it is a relaxing sight. All sounds boiled down to Alice's bare feet stepping on gravel and grass and the wind.

"Octavian, I wonder what the others back at home are thinking. Do you really think that they would want us to be traveling on our own? Father Flounder, Joseph, and Shirley must be thinking about me too," Alice says.

You reassure her. "They're your family that has your best interest in mind. Doing good for the world is way better than having you stay where they are, hardly making any impact. Having a little sister that can set the wrong things on Earth straight will be something that they want to be proud of. And if they had known this, then our current situation wouldn't be any different than now. They'd be like, 'better get going, young lady! The land isn't getting any safer for future children! Chop chop!' "

Alice laughs at your impression. "Hahaha. I guess it is alright to be traveling. I just wish that I had a proper goodbye with them. I seems that if I go back in the future there will be something wrong."

"Alice, thinking like that is what's keeping you down. Put your mind on something else, like... breakfast!"

"Yeah, breakfast. Shirley did make the best food every morning. I'm glad that you are here to cheer me up!"

After what felt like forever, tips of buildings emerge by the freeway. Vehicles became more frequent over the course of time. Largely, trucks with their freights. They're passing through town for a stop before going on to the cities ahead. The place is compact too, houses and shops alike squished together to be as efficient as possible with their space.

You get Alice to carry you. You don't know about the citizens there, but people seeing a walking stuffed rabbit will definitely get her unwanted attention. She gets enough with her odd get-up and at one point an old lady asked if she was okay. Alice, uncomfortable with new faces different to the people at the cult, kept herself silent until the old lady went her merry way after reading Alice's face.

Nearby a local park a farmer's market took place. Attracted by the food displays Alice approached the weekly fair to take a gander at the fruits and vegetables. "Little lady, are you fine?" a man said to her. She had been eyeing his baskets of strawberries for some time.

"May I have some?" Alice says.

"Sure. That would be 2.23."

"2.23?" she stammers, the numbers meaning nothing in her head.

"2.23 for one basket, little lady. Is there something wrong?" the man politely asks.

"Uh... N-Nevermind! I just saw something else that caught my mind!" Quickly, she moves to the nearest bench to cool off. "Octavian, did he meant money?!" she then asks you.

"He did," you say, having the knowledge whereas your owner doesn't.

"Those fruits looked delicious but I didn't have anything to buy. Do you think I can barter my clothes? They're made from natural wool from home's farms, and you could have me changed into that thing from last night. We can probably do that at the restrooms here."

"Wait here," you say to her.

"Where are you going?"

"To buy some food. Don't worry!" going into the market stands. Alice will feel guilty if she knows you're stealing from people. It's up to you to do some of the dirty work so she won't struggle as much along the way.

Out of the view of the people who are visiting the market, you hide by the plant pots
that adorn the area and wooden crates. You went to the man running the strawberry stand. There are not many chances to snag a berry basket. Spying on him, you wait for the moment to make your move.

Minutes later the man goes for a restroom break. You jump out of where you were hiding and targeted the spare crates that held more of his fruit. Successfully acquiring a basket you take the same route back to Alice, giving it to her.

She takes a bite. "It's good! But, Octavian, when did you have money?"

"I have my ways. The girl who's asking about how I can despite having a low understanding of money should be setting herself for more important things anyway."

"Oh. I never thought it would be like that," taking another bite.

Exiting the market, Alice starts to search for a place to stay per your recommendation. The orderly buildings don't let alot of opportunities to provide shelter for her, most of them already occupied by store owners.

Further away from where the stores shouldn't be a problem you both begin to see places that are more suitable to your needs by a not so larger margin. Nonetheless, it is a cut greater than the environment before. An abandoned two-level building draws Alice's attention and she asks if it'll be good to take shelter there. Uncertain that there won't be another building like this unless she looks for longer, you give her the go.

Making sure that no one else on the street will see Alice sneaking into areas that she isn't suppose to be, she goes near the building's walls. The front entrance is a bust, taped and nailed to keep intruders from going inside. You point out that there might be another entrance at the sides or back to her. She agrees, scraping by the side of the building and finding a cracked open window.

Alice drops you inside the building first, herself coming after. Tipping herself over, she falls through, cutting herself on the leftover glass. "Ouch!" covering the cut on her leg.

"Are you okay?" you ask.

She dabs her finger on the wound, wincing whenever it stung. "It's fine. Nothing serious. Why don't we check out the floor to make sure it's safe?"

"Got it. I can go up to the second floor while you cover the first," the two of you splitting up.

On your level, everything appears to be free of harm. The stairway is unobstructed, the roof is doesn't have holes for the weather to go through, and the floors won't be giving out to a heavy weight evident by a massive store of sheet-covered furniture.

Alice's end is just about the same in your assessment. The windows, except for a couple which includes the one that you went through, are boarded, good for privacy when she does her magic. The back entrance is blocked by wooden panels too but her ramming into it will do the trick at the cost of minor bruising. It opened, though, without a functioning lock, the back entrance can be used by Alice and is secured by using a chair from above.

Alice sits down on to the dusty first floor and wipes the sweat off her forehead. "This is sorta fun, don't you think?"

"It is. As long as you're having it good, I'll be feeling the same way as well. But now that we have a place for later tonight, we're free to do what we want for the rest of the day."

"Right," Alice says. "And I still have to get the magic you gave me under control."

"We restart. Always ready when you are."

Under your guidance, Alice puts herself in the same posture from this morning. Second time's the charm, her connecting herself to magic at a steady pace and regaining the sensation in herself.

"I got it again!" Alice told. "What now?"

"How strong is it?"

"It's like something's squirming in me. Is that good enough?"

"I want you to focus on memorizing the sensation until it's vivid. But yes, it's good enough as is. Alice, begin to have that energy flow out of you."

"As in?"

"Imagine it seeping through your skin and covering you. Or, a shower if you want nicer imagery."

Eyes closed and nodding, Alice breathes in and out. The light in chest shines briefly, causing another flash to reveal herself post transformation. In the second time that she's in her magical dress, she is complete. A silver hammer is in her hands, its surprise entrance messing with her balance and tripping her. "Octavian, what's this?" she asks you on the floor, rubbing where she landed.

"Alice, you exceeded my expectations! You are a certified magical girl now! That hammer is the final piece to unlock your magical powers."

She examines the weapon that she's holding. "Is this magical too?"

"Yup!" you say. There are twinkling stars in Alice's eyes.

5 minutes exposed in her magical girl mode is enough to have her adapt to its unique vibe and the hammer as her weapon. A round of practice swings had her estimate the right amount of strength holding it, but as a person who hasn't been in a fight in her entire life, she is unequally clumsy when putting in too much force.

Combative skills aside, it was time to test her magical side of things. Testing on a small wildflower growing at the building's corner that Alice voiced she had a calling intuition on, she smash it. Nothing happened at first from the crushed plant, but then, its squished body got up and morphed. The wildflower lost its petals and regrew red ones that encircled its center. The stem became thicker and vile thorns shot out. It's now a rose.

A spider crawls by on the wall. Scared, Alice backs away with her hammer raised. Her sight is focused on the arachnid that couldn't do harm to her. "Don't be afraid," you say. "You can just crush it."

"Eeeh... But it's all gross. What if it jumps on me?"

"It won't. You'll be faster than it can react to, and spiders can't see far enough to see your hammer's head before it reaches it. Just give it a swing, your first target practice for the day."

Tip-toeing near the spider, she keeps herself still. The spider doesn't move, but to her, it's a dangerous enemy that will threaten the thought of sleeping children. Pushing herself, Alice gives it a good wack, killing it. "See, that wasn't so ha

"What's happening?!"

From the spider's corpse, a new red and white, larger spider. It scuttles it's way near Alice. The unforeseen result terrifies her, and even more when it starts to climb up her dress. It just remained on her, not biting or anything else.

Climbing up Alice, you slap the spider away from her. She smashes it again when it hit the floor, this time not having it come back a third time. "Ugh." Alice shivers in disgusts. "Gross. Gross, gross, gross! Ueck!"

"It's gone now. I don't see the reason to overreact," you say.

"It is complicated, Octavian. Being crawled on by a spider is a nightmare in the real world! I should exterminate every last one of them. Yes! People won't be scared of them if I do."

"Now that's going overboard, Alice. The world needs spiders too. You don't like flies either, but if there were spiders then there won't be as many flies to bother others."

"I guess that's a point... But I still don't like spiders. They're too icky."

Acquiring some idea of what Alice's hammer can do, you educate her in the basics. Flying magic will do great for her mobility.

Her hammer dropped aside, the girl in the habit levitate a few inches off from the ground. Her legs are wobbling, trying to keep themselves straight midair. Coaching her, you get her to float at a higher level. She accomplishes 2 feet before going back down, clearly exhausted.

Tired, Alice has her habit disappear. The freedom of her loose clothes returns and she stretches herself wide while laying flat. In the process, the hammer leaning against the wall vanishes too. You hop by her face to see that she's sleeping. All that magic surely drained her. Although you won't wake her up, she deserves that much.

It's nighttime. Alice slept longer than you thought. Getting up from a fetal position, she taps the floor to navigate the building in the dark. You go over to the windows facing the town's street and budge the wooden boards to have the streetlight's light through. "Thanks, Octavian," she says to you, yawning. "It's night? Did I oversleep that much?"

"You did. Most likely I pushed you too hard," you apologized.

She bends down to pat your head. "That isn't a problem. But this magical girl thing is very exhausting."

Alice takes the moment to sit around, talking to you. Your conversation ends abrupt when her stomach gives out another growl. She did skip lunch and you can imagine that dinnertime has already passed.

A person won't die from an empty stomach that fast. You have Alice wait until morning since it won't be a good idea to find something throughout the night if you manage to bump into someone who's looking for trouble.

"Those strawberries weren't that filling," Alice says. She has you in her lap. Sitting in the dark with a sliver of light for her eyes to follow, under a building that's likely not been inhabited for years, is the very definition of homeless. But she doesn't consider it that way. "What will you get me for next time? Bread? Bread's good."

"We will see. You'll make yourself more hungry," you warn her. "How do you like what we've been doing so far, Alice? You're pretty into it, I presume."

She gives you another toothy grin. "I am. The training as a whole is tricky but I'm confident that it will be second nature as long as you're here and that I'm working hard at it. An issue I do have is how my hammer works is stumping me. I can swing it, though, that won't make use of its full potential. And I don't even know that too. What it had shown us appears to be nonsense and I can't put a finger on its use." She looks to the rose that took the place of the wildflower.

"You will figure it out as you go. It's a natural way of progression which includes you. As God's messenger, that's the message He is sending me right now."

"I almost forgot about that. Haha. Hey, since you're in cahoots with Him, can I ask him something? Does how you communicate like a radio? Cause those ear resemble tv antennae."

"Fire away," you allow, not putting much thought into it.

Raising you up so she can have your ears near her mouth, she speaks into it. Every breath in her pronunciations tickles, not appearing so on the outside thanks to your will to hold the laughter in and your design as a doll. "God, it's me, Alice. Well, you'll know that already," nervously said. "Will I'll be successful in my mission? I'm having some doubts. Just little ones. My main reason is that the world's big and I won't be able to help everyone."

Alice spaces herself from your ears when done. On queue, you pretend to be listening to someone. "He said that not being able to help everyone is inevitable, but you can at least help everyone that you can. The world is large, but by being a positive influence you can have people make a difference too by being an example."

"God really said that?" looking of relieved. You validate your lie in a wild nod of the head. "Is it okay if I ask another question to Him, Octavian?"

"Ask as much as you want."

Mouth to your ears again, she asks in a straight face, "Do I have a mother or a father, God? I'm not unthankful for the brothers and sisters at home, but I wonder about that occasionally. Father Flounder's the closest I have as a parent."

"Yes you have, but family bonds aren't created by blood. Your true family are the relationships that you create with your friends, He said." It's a half-truth. Without going too deep into Alice's bloodline, her mother was a magical girl too who you're contracted with to extend your life as well. Titania. For reasons that boggles your mind, she left you with a baby Alice nearby the cult's village thinking that it would be a safe place to have her. Just dropped you and her off, muttered something about "continuing her adventure" and left. Talk about worst mother of the century... But you wonder about where and what she's doing. One thing's for certain is that her quirk for being irresponsible will get her in trouble someday. Does she even remember you guys? Having more control in your contracts would be dandy in those circumstances but your nature prevents you.

"So I do." Alice isn't as excited as you would've thought to be. Her curiosity is sated and pushes no more. "Family through relationships... I can get behind that. A family's a family no matter what! That includes you, me, and the rest of our family back over there!" The following questions to God switched to a safer note after that. Alice tired herself once more, soon napping for the rest of the night. Observing her sleeping expression makes you think about what she would be like, and look like, in the distant future. For all you can hope, absolutely not like Titania.

The tweeting of birds comes afoot when the early hours passes. Alice is still asleep, and you want her that way, wanting to prowl outside of the building to grab food. If it's also possible, some supplies.

Through the back entrance you run into the street. The sidewalks are barren. Perfect. The setting in your favor, you go around the blocks for accessible stores.

Lucky you, you encounter a supermarket. All doors and windows are closed, but after searching its perimeter the restroom is vulnerable. A vent near the bottom of its wall is loose, it caving in when you run into it full-force. The clanging of the metal plate made some noise, but not a problem, since there aren't any attendants here to catch the ruckus. Penetrating the store, all you have to do now is open the restroom door and get whatever. Of course, you get food, specifically some bread that Alice wished to have. An item checked on the list, you then get a cheap backpack from the display racks. It'll be useful for carrying necessities, however, you can't get too many of them before you take too long, or take what exceeds what you can carry.

Pick 2
Get money from the cash registers

As quickly as you can have yourself be you pack up some bathing and camping supplies in the backpack, shampoo, body wash. basic dental hygiene, and a battery powered flashlight and lantern, that can still enable it to slide through the vent. And, you drag the heavier items, a sleeping bag and tent, yourself. Afterwards, you stuff the two remaining gear inside and carry the bag to the abandoned building.

Alice was just about to wake when you returned. She meets a piece of bread when getting up from the hard floor, beaming as you have given her what she wanted. Her gaze goes over to the backpack filled with some travel supplies that you took all willy-nilly. Swallowing she says, "... You're really not buying anything, aren't you, Octavian?" The size and types of the products brings her to the assumption that you are.

"... No. I stole them from a supermarket. The strawberries from yesterday were also stolen. You do know why I have to, though. Yes?"

"But you're stealing. Father Flounder said that stealing is one of the worst possible things a person can do. Don't you feel bad for taking these things? And I don't think that God would approve of what you're doing."

"We have to survive somehow. Accomplishing our promise doesn't go without possessing the right tools along the way," you say.

Looking down on the piece of bread Alice becomes unsure with herself. "Is there some other way than stealing? I don't want to be a bad guy. That would defeat the purpose of my promise. What if I help someone and they soon knew that I'm a thief! Thieves aren't people who make the world better."

"Whoever you help doesn't need to know. The point is that you assisted whoever in a genuine fashion. Hero thieves are thing too, but I digress. Sometimes, good people have to do some bad things to start off in the right track. You're still in the learning phase of becoming as a magical girl. Besides, what's a couple of supplies that'll be restocked. We aren't hurting anyone."

Alice's eyes avert away from you. She is feeling guilty.

Forcing yourself in her downwards view you try to cheer her up. Alice can be easy to deal with at times and hopefully that this is one of them. "Don't be so sad Alice. Just take in mind how many people will look up to you, especially children. They wouldn't care if you pettily stole items. They'd want you to be their friend like you always wanted. And isn't that the most important thing of all in your mission? Seeing the smiles of kids in a place free of hurt and evil that you made for them? 'Big sister Alice'. Think about it carefully. You could be the big sister of a peaceful family."

"Big sister?..." Your words seem to have gone through her guilty sphere. "Would people call me that?"

"Yes! They would! And it's not going to happen if you stay here skulking forever! Come on and get up! You have a mission to complete!"

You have fanned Alice's flame enough for her to feel compelled to. She stuffs the piece of bread in her hands and take the loaf under her arms. In this way, the weight of the backpack was nothing to her and she could virtually live off of her own spirit.

Saying goodbye to the abandoned building that had you both in its service, Alice sets off to the distance ahead from the town to continue her journey. The surroundings quickly changed to empty hills again and periodically you would see a farm at the side.

At the end of the day, you make yourself camp. Alice followed the instructions booklet that came with the tent, propping the tent up without a problem. The lantern powered by new batteries, its stay outside to illuminate the area. Sparingly, pieces of bread are eaten by Alice for dinner.

"Octavian." Alice whispers for you in the middle of the night. "Do you smell that?"

"Got it," she says quietly. Inside of her sleeping bag she transforms into her habit and wiggles out with her silver hammer at the ready. You zip up the tent's entrance for you to step out and take a glance into the thick night. Your arms touching the lantern by chance you turn it on. There appears to be nothing here now that it's clear.

"Uaaahhh...." A wave of fear shocks you. You turn around to face the source of this coldness and standing OVER, NOT EVEN BENDING ITS KNEES, a decrepit humanoid that's more of a zombie. Its teeth are thin yet sharp and its sunken eyes trace your slightest movement. "Food... Food... Girl... Smell food..."

"ALICE! ALICE, A LITTLE HELP NOW!"

Hearing your shout the young battle nun opens the tent to be at your side. She turns around too, undergoing your same reaction. "Octavian, what's that?!"

"H-Hit it! Don't be scared!" Urged to, Alice jumps at the monster, propelled forwards by using the flying magic you have her learn, albeit only a short distance due to yet having a good enough experience with it.

The head of her hammer collides with the monster's leg. It screams, and Alice lands not too far from it. Panicking, she runs away back to you watch what it's going to do next but it had vanished. However, something stepping in the background still doesn't leave.

"Alice, I'm going to get the flashlight from the tent. Will you be okay alone for a few seconds?!" you say.

"I-I don't know! Er, just hurry up! Please!" Paranoid, Alice rests the arm of the hammer on her shoulder while turning her head at a rapid pace. Seeing that monster scared her to the core, and you contemplate the decision to leave her for a few seconds like you just told her. She's tougher than she looks... You trust. Though the slim probability that she dies keeps you in your tracks. What's another dead magical girl? You already got yourself an extension of life, you might as well leave her like Titania did. But the thing is, you've been her only friend that knew all kinds of thing that she doesn't know herself.

"Just do it," you tell yourself. "Only seconds. Not hours." Dashing into the tent you throw whichever your not searching for until you get your stubby hands on the flashlight. In these adrenaline-dosed times things look slower in motion than what they actually are. It's a frustrating phenomenon and as a rabbit you have the need to go faster. Out back, you almost trip.

Returning to the legs of Alice you flip the flashlight on and cover her rear. "No signs of it on my side," you tell her.

She doesn't answer you but know that she has heard your report. Away from the both of you, she then hears more footsteps. "Octavian, over there," pointing at the way for you to shine. Immediately you give the area a flash to reveal the monster's figure. It screams again. And annoyed that it's been found out it charges.

Alice froze. The grotesque creature is overtaking her mind and not physically overpowering her. You shake her legs to get her to snap out of it but the issue isn't wearing off. Shivering, teeth chattering, and her eyes blinking briefly to reveal madness that can motivate her, she swings.

The hitting high, the hammer hits the torso of the monster. It falls, beginning to crawl away at an insane speed when it touched a single blade of grass on the ground. Spectacularly, Alice doesn't let up and pound the monsters leg in, incapacitating it. Screeching, it lashes out at her, scratching her arm. "Gah!" she yells.

"Alice, move back! Back!" you advise, but she doesn't listen. At this moment the monsters flailing around its claws like no tomorrow. She charges through again, and in spite of being wounded on multiple instances she smashes its chest for a third hit. Stronger than what its spindly body would seem it grabs her arm. Its grip strength is locking her down. However, Alice raises her foot and stomps at the monster's head with the bulk of her platform shoes that's part of her magical costume. Alice continues to.

The monster very well losing its hold on her she finally back away. "Alice, can you hear me?"

"Y-Yeah..." breathing heavily.

"We have to go!" Not listening, she counterintuitively approaches the weakened monster. She delivers the final fourth blow to its battered head to kill.
>>
>>3625770

You watch Alice from afar at the head of the monstrous corpse. She isn't moving from the spot but her shivering fears are growing worse. You get close to her after steeling yourself. And at a worse time, the dead body begins to get up from its terminal position. "What?! Impossible. No!" Alice lets out at it.

Its blackened skin coloring itself into a red hue, like the spider from before and the wildflower, the monster gets back on its two feet. Its blunt wounds are healed, seemingly untouched from the fight. Despite being in a close vicinity to its killer, it does not attack. It isn't hostile, or maybe mindless in the best case, at all!

"We know that, but you have to think straight. It is not moving from that spot any time soon it seems. What is restraining it? It's current standing may be related to that."

Alice switches her stare to you and the monster, then from it to you and again for more times than once, her confusion prominent in her activity. "How do you know that? You can be wrong, Octavian," in one static piece.

"I can't say that I'm totally right but I want you to trust me. You're the person with the hammer as well. When it snaps at you, just pummel it for another lesson."

"... It's scary, though."

"Alice, you killed the thing in a freak out. You're scaring me. Don't be chained down by your fears and talk to it."

"Eeeeeh... F-Fine! Fine!" Slowly and cautiously Alice slides close to it. At the tip of its range that its arms could reach, the monster did not do her dirty to take the opportunity to pay her back. She first pushes her hammer at its body to examine its liveliness, nothing happening from her wary nudges. "H-Hey, you!" she speaks up. "What are you?"

"Queen.... Am knight." In a turn of events the monster falls to its knees to kneel. "Service to queen... forever."

"What do you mean by 'queen'?" you ask it. This brings back some questions from the previous day. That spider that went through the process of being reborn, or should be considered to be remade, likely had the same sentiment as this one in front of you. Of course you and Alice wouldn't have known that due to its inability to communicate as a different species and her arachnophobia, so it bit the dust prematurely before either of you could figure its new nature out.

The monster does not give an ounce of acknowledgement to you. "Not queen," it sighed, brushing you off. It continues to kneel before Alice.

You nudge her leg for attention. "Seems I'm not good enough for it. The reigns are all yours since it sees you as its queen." Scoffing to return the disrespect, you cross your arms.

Less shaken and a little resolute by the monster's composure to her, Alice talks. "You mean me?"

"Yes. You are.... queen," it answers.

"But I'm not one. Have you got the wrong girl instead?"

It shakes its head to deny that. "No. You... queen. I am.... knight. Must serve for your... kingdom."

The monster becoming silent with no more questions from either of you, you both have a small chat thinking that it won't hear. You and Alice line up a few questions. "Why were you stalking my tent," she says.

"Tent? Do not... remember stalking you... Your Majesty."

"What do you remember?"

"Do not know...."

"Can you remember our battle a moment beforehand? What is the most that you can bring up about my questions?"

"Can only remember... waking. Only know that I am... your knight... Your Majesty."

Well, when all Alice has is a hammer, everything starts looking like a friend.

I'm sort of surprised by the whole Knight/Queen/Kingdom theme the zombie brought up. I was expecting her magic to cause almost a religious devotion in the stuff Alice changed because she wished to be like the cult leader and to make the world a better place via correcting bad stuff. (and her magic took the second part literally). Well at least we don't need to step in when the new friends started calling Alice a goddess. Also, am I the only one who feels bad for spiderbro?

Maybe Alice can summon the minions she converts from hammerspace. It would be pretty convenient since walking around with the zombie might raise some questions.

Although, from the descriptions it sounds like stuff that gets hit a second time dies.

"So, Your Majesty," jokingly addressing Alice as which has her give you an annoyed glance, "Your thoughts?"

"I don't know. This is all too weird for me to handle, Octavian."

Thumping your foot you think long about this monster. You would like to say something but it'll ignore you again. "Alice," you then correctly name, "Can you make it talk to me?"

"I can try." She faces the monster. "Can you please not be cold towards Octavian? He would like to say some things that may be important."

"Rabbit... Part of Queen's kingdom?" it guesses.

"He's my friend since I was little. If it makes you be polite to him then yes. And can you not kneel? It's awkward to say the least." The sheer respect that it has for her fails to coincide with her humbleness. She isn't a queen of a kingdom but a normal girl in fancy clothes, and who happens to have magic due to you. Never was Alice prepared for being acted towards as a royal.

The monster bows for one last time. It gets up from its knees, towering over Alice and you. Stiffly it directs itself to your small size, ant-sized to be exact because of its height. "Rabbit... Let us speak."

"That was all it took?" you say. You nevermind it. "How loyal are you to Alice? We can't have someone backstabbing her out of nowhere."

"Will die for queen... Will protect queen as long... as I live! OOOoooouuuoh! Uuuuoooaah!" It groans, long and stretched in a low pitch. Is this a battle cry? It sounds like it's crying in a literal sense. "Will prove worth... Will serve queen until.... death. I am knight... knight, shields of queens!"

You study the monster, burning its image into your mind and skeptically analyzing its pledge. "Seems like your powers have him a second chance to be a good person," you say to Alice.

"Is that how it is now? As much as I would like to be happy that is it, it's risky to me."

"No, let's keep it alive and have it tag along. We've already confirmed that is isn't hostile. For now. And is rather enthusiastic about serving you. It says its your knight, so why not utilize it? Never know when you need a body, especially with this guy's abilities."

"If you came to that, then I won't have a problem. You know more than me for most of the time. The last problem I have is that it stinks. I don't know if it's because it's actually a rotting corpse or it lived in the wild for too long. Er, not in a mean way!" remembering that who she's talking about is in front of her. The monster didn't understand her and says nothing back.

"It is indeed. But we can figure that out later. I have an idea about the other creatures you converted and something regarding your magic. I'm curious. Alice, could you hold up your hammer and think about the rose, then the spider from back when we were first practicing?"

"Ew. Why?"

"Pretty please?"

Reluctantly, Alice holds her hammer in the air and imagines those two.

It's the spider increasing the DC isn't it.

We could ask Alice to just try summoning the rose if she isn't tired after all this.
Also, I wonder if she can further alter the things she hammers. Maybe she can turn the zombie into a living knight.

Also the Zombie needs a name if he doesn't have one. Might I suggest Sir Alonso after Alonso Quixano aka Don Quixote

A steady minute passes without Alice's imagination and magic resulting into anything extraordinary. "Darn," you say disappointingly. Maybe bringing back that spider is what's holding back Alice because, well, she killed it.

"Octavian, what are you trying to make me do?" Alice questions. She looses up her raised hold for the hammer to land on to the grass.

"I thought that you could be able to summon those that you converted. It does not appear that it works. Or that there's something else that we need to do?"

"Wait, so you wanted to bring back that spider?!" riling herself up.

You comfort Alice before she does something unnecessary. "You have no need to be scared. It was only an experiment and that spider never came. I believe that you're able to convert or remake creatures in a way like the thing we have here," looking at the monster.

She forgets about her temporary fright to think about your assumption critically. "In what relation does that fit with myself?"

"You said you want to correct bad things in the world. Something along those lines. Your magic is specialized and its ability could be what can assist you in that goal. You have already made that monster change from wild to reserved."

"To make things wrong correct? I did say that I want to bring peace and make things right. But this is the power to? I wasn't expecting it to be like this."

"If it helps, I'm only guessing in the end. Your magic's details aren't yet fully found out."

"I appreciate what you're saying, but isn't this ability just brainwashing?"

"Is it? Killing things for them to come back without their memories and have the drive to serve you, their queen, isn't close to the textbook definition."

"You get the idea, Octavian. It's that I'm forcing things to change."

Your speech echoes in the mind of the girl. The sound of crickets take place in the silent night as nobody is speaking. The monster does not respond until interacted, you're catching your breath, and Alice has her mind on the responsibility that you clarified for her.

"Octavian, I don't think I can do it alone. Ever since we left I haven't thought much about the promise we made. I thought it would be a happy adventure. But, now I have a magical sledgehammer in my hands that has something that I need to be responsible for. I don't think I can do it in hindsight."

"Alice, you can. Let's not talk about the people who will be positively affected and the people who you care about for once. And you are not alone in this. I'm here, your guardian angel, and talking about complications and straightening them out is my God-given job. You're a strong girl that has walked miles, and one that defeated a creature and made it into a companion. If that says anything, you have the worth to bear the importance of handing out justice." Your tone softens to cure the stress in the Alice and in the air. "In quiet moments, you can always relax and unwind. Can't you hear the crickets? Let go of your worries and listen to them."

She looks around in the dark, preserving the silence in your group. "What do you think of them?" you say.

"It's calming. Joseph and Shirley would open the windows to have the crickets' song inside the house throughout the night."

"Are you feeling tired, Alice? I still like to see if you could summon that rose and I wonder if you could give our new friend an appearance that better suits his new nature as a knight. There is nothing stopping us from trying again in the morning, though."

Alice decided to call it a night and rests. She told the monster to stay outside and watch and it happily obliged to. Its smell bothered the both of you in the sleep but eventually your nose went blind to it. And in the morning, the monster is seen standing in the same spot, overlooking the landscape like a statue.

Feeling better, Alice wanted to test out her powers some more after eating bread for breakfast. You recommend summoning the rose instead of the spider, herself not yet keen in being around an arachnid who's under her spell. She also agreed to fixing up her monster friend afterward whether it works or not.

Before Alice, the little rose from the abandoned building appears from a portal. It's exactly the same from the last time you saw it, untouched but giving off a sense of life. Not ordinary life where you can perceive the biological functionality of plants and animals, but a character of being able to be directly interacted with like a human. This discovery is only noticeable by the fact that you have the time to carefully study the rose.

Suggesting that Alice could have the rose stored in a space, she gives it a shot. The portal reappears and swallows up the rose into depthless realm in a blink of an eye.

Uncertain capabilities are now made certain. You and Alice switch your thoughts on the motionless monster. "How are you?" Alice says to it.

"Aaahh... Queen.... I am.... good," it responds.

"Me and Octavian were thinking to try something out. Could you kneel again?"

"Gladly... Your Majesty..." Going down on one knee it bows its head enough to stare at ground. Alice has the hammer hover over the monster's head and reconnects herself with her magic In the old time ceremony of knighting a soldier, she attempts it to complete the spell. A suit of armor builds itself on the monster. A crusader.

"How do you say it?" Alice asks, wanting a rerun of your directions.

"It's 'I hereby declare you something-something, knight of Queen Alice'. Just pick a name, any name," you say. The knighting mood can't be finished without the usual phrase!

"Right. I hereby declare you Sir... Aaaaalonso. Alonso. Knight of Queen Alice, yours truly."

"My honor! OOoooouuah.... Yes.... Your Majesty!" it says. Alice has a second thinking why it's staying kneeled until it dawned on her.

"Y-You may stand!" she commanded Alonso, him saluting on his way up.

Packing up camp, Alice assigns her new knight of carrying the luggage. Delightfully it loaded the backpack over its armored plates, following after you and her as you traveled. Along the way, you run into a man. He looks Native American by the cultured outfit of his. "Miss, miss!" he calls out. "Have you noticed anything abnormal in these parts?"

Slowly, she answers him with a "No. Not at all."

"Are you sure? No dead animals? Or disappearing buddies? Rancid smells?" The rotting scent of Alonso is kept inside his armor. Luckily it isn't a problem.

"Nope," Alice answers again.

"Is that true?" The Indian man stares at the religiously-adorned girl that he's talking to, her rabbit in her arms, and the man in armor. "Forgive me. I was just checking. Carry on, as I have my own duties to attend."

Moments after, a dagger flies by Alice's cheek. It's the Indian again. "The scent of rot in the spirits is strong rather than what's present here in reality. What kind of witch are you?"

On guard, you tell Alice to stay on her toes. "Be careful with this guy," you say as you're dropped to the ground. "That kind of precision is by no means what a normal man can do. He also sounds like he has something to do with our knight here." The Native American must be looking for something that made Alonso. He uttered witch, so does that have to do with him? You get Alice to answer the man.

"The benevolent kind that protects innocent people from monsters like the undead. I think you're looking for a different sort of which. One that I too would seek to stop. I already fought one zombie last night. Are there more of them in these parts? Is a witch really what's causing them?" she says word for word.

"So you subdued it. Not even the shaman of my tribe could have such a evil spirit adhere to himself. That thing in that suit, do you know what that is, miss?" From a satchel, the man takes out another dagger.

"A zombie?" Alice says.

"You have the general idea down, but that is not a zombie. A wendigo spirit, a little different to the skinwalkers down south of America. At any rate, their bad omens. Only a witch can have something like that following her."

Going with the idea, Alice bolsters the good witch image. "Then this thing is of no harm to people anymore. I assure you that whatever you called Alonso won't attack someone without my explicit command."

"You say that but I have no evidence that I can trust your motives. And that rabbit doll at your side. it's peculiar too, another strong spirit. Or is it even a spirit at all? Before I get sidetracked, I have to make my point stand that words are meaningless against what I see." The man throws his second dagger. Alice saw it a mile away, however, that shot was a warning. "There omens that are overstaying their welcome in these lands. As I can smell the scent of rot from your 'Alonso', I can perceive a fog emanating from you, one of corruption. If you don't mind me asking, where do you hail?"

"I'm not telling that to a person who attack," Alice retort. As a defensive measure she summons her hammer.

"Logically. I will have to defeat you first then."

As swift as the wind, the man goes for a take down on Alice. "Alonso!" she says in a fast attempt to be protected, the knife of the man resisted by Alonso's iron.

"Enemy.... of queen... Daring... Dangerously Daring!!!"

The man goes as a distance to recalculate his next move. "Nasty spirit," he says to Alonso, "I am only doing what I must. An exorcist must exorcise. I am not different to that cause."

I'm been sort of torn about what to do here since the post has went up. Writer's block hasn't helped. However I find the whole corruption thing concerning. It could be Alice's magic, but on the other hand maybe she has already gotten Alessa'ed by the cult.

>| A separate action/piece of dialogue |:Tell Alice to have Alonso shield her and pull back towards anything she can use as cover. We are going to make our presence known. Have her hold us in the crook of her arm and get ready to flee, if need be.

>I however must question the efficacy of this exercise, young man. I too have no evidence to back up your motives too. Where is the logic in brashly attacking something of a colleague unprovoked? One who managed to subdue a dangerous monster with only three days of experience in magic she barely understands. Furthermore, one who happens to be a barefoot little girl, who can hold all of her earthly possessions in a bag. Malicious spirits can be sadistically creative in their use of disguises, but you must understand that it is rarely wise to broadcast our shared profession to the general public.

>...And if you do manage to complete your brazen act of child murder, I'm afraid our mutual friend Alonso here will lose his newfound preoccupation with chivalrous valor and will revert back to his base nature before my charge's magic took a hold. If you manage to survive that, you're going to have to deal with me and my meaningless words. I'm sure the police will certainty approve of your actions. They are known for their tolerance of kidnappers, perverts, and child killers and will absolute believe your assertion that you stabbed a witch. I'm also positive that tribal officials can keep all this hushed up once the media gets involved. Missing kids are all great for ratings. However, none of that has to happen. I think we've all managed to make bad first impressions.

>We mean no harm and to cut to the chase your talk of corruption is concerning. My dear's magic shouldn't take on that sort of presentation. I'm worried that what you are seeing is something else's doing and if that's the case the last thing my sweet girl needs is another enemy. Young man, you must have a name? I have come to be known as Octavian. This is Alice. I can answer your questions in a more private setting. However I do not want to trouble the girl. She has enough on her plate, as is.

I want to give the actual QM at least a week to get back. I don't want to step on anyone's toes but it's a shame to see a good quest idea go to waste so soon.

If there isn't a new thread by Sunday I will make one (afternoon-ish est). I've already done a bit of research and have a general plot idea. I just need to sit down and write the first update and maybe the skeleton of the next one.

In the meantime I archived the thread.
