Last time on Isekai Forever, our protagonist, Tomoya Retza, found himself mysteriously waking up in an airplane after an extraordinarily bizarre encounter with a girl. In short order, he came to find that he was in the world of Hirohiko Araki's manga, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Specifically, Tomoya learned that he was in S City, a city nearby Morioh, in the year 1999. More interestingly, he found that he was a member of the Italian gang Passione, in the area on a mission assigned to him. After interacting with some shady individuals in S City, Tomoya broke his leg and chose to travel to Morioh, making his way to Tonio Trussardi's restaurant in the hopes of getting healed.

Right now, Tomoya has three primary goals to achieve:
1. Remember and complete the job your Capo, Velio Liberati, assigned to you.
2. Explore the abilities of your stand, 「The Man Who Sold the World」, and power him up.
3. Decide what to do about the many dangers lurking in the quiet town of Morioh.
>>
You spend the time while you wait for your food casually drinking the most delicious glass of water you've ever had and crying bloody tears all over Tonio's fancy cloth napkins. It makes you wonder just how much Tonio's going to have to spend on cleaning up the messes his cooking creates. Then again, you imagine the cost of the food is probably more exorbitant, since he has to use the finest quality ingredients to actually heal people. Speaking of which, he soon comes out carrying a small plate. When Tonio sees you calmly sitting there, he raises an eyebrow at you, asking, "Retza-san, you do realize you're crying, right?"

You give him a nod and continue wiping away the tears, giving him a smile. "I'm not sure exactly what's going on, but something about you tells me you don't have any ill intent. Either that or you've already poisoned me, in which case I really don't have any chance of surviving. In either case I may as well just enjoy a delicious meal while I have the chance, no?"

He seems surprised by your relaxed response, placing down the plate in front of you and stepping back. "I see... well, this antipasto is a simple Tomato and Mozzarella Bruschetta. If you experience anything unusual, it is simply because the oils are washing toxins from your body while the acidic elements neutralize harmful alkaline elements in your digestive system, so do not worry. Enjoy the meal, Signore."

You give him a smile and do as you're told, lifting the small slice of bread and sniffing it before popping it into your mouth. You've never actually had Bruschetta before, but the moment it hits your tongue you experience an almost orgasmic wash of flavor run through your body. As you eat the food, your entire midsection shrivels up and leaves you holding onto the table for balance as it feels like all of your core muscles have atrophied to a point of complete uselessness, along with everything else in the area. Nevertheless, you still manage to shovel more of the food into your mouth, just because it's that good.

When Tonio comes back he tells you something about your digestive issues from a less than ideal diet being fixed, and you continue on with the next two courses. The second one seems less effective than the first, for some reason just making you feel slightly numb. The third, however, Tonio seems to stick around to watch you eat, seeming nervous. The reason for this becomes obvious when you eat the final course and experience the overwhelmingly painful sensation of your leg's flesh ripping open and your leg bones ripping themselves out of your body, being replaced by new, fresh bones which hurt just as much to grow in. By the end of the experience, you're an absolute mess, covered in sweat and panting for air. Tonio, in contrast, seems delighted by the performance of his stand, telling you he'll bring the bill soon and taking your discarded bones into the kitchen to dispose of them.

Flaw Removed: Broken Leg
>>
After the harrowing experience you just had, you have to collect your thoughts. You had figured some things out while you were eating, and right now you need to remind yourself of them, mostly to take your mind off of the painful memories that came with the delicious food. If you recall correctly, you had decided that, while in Morioh, your first goal should be to power up your stand. Those with weak stands don't tend to last long in this world, after all.

Soon enough you recieve the bill from Tonio and grudgingly hand over the 9100 yen he asks for. It's a very reasonable price, considering how amazing the food and service was. You think he might've actually given you a discount, all things considered. With that much gone, you're left with 4080 yen, a briefcase full of foreign currency, and the info for an account your boss was going to wire money into.

For the moment, you stand up and make your way out of Tonio's restaurant, thanking him for the food. You get the feeling you're going to need his services again before things are over. For now, however, you need to figure out where you're going. You want to find stand users you can steal from, right? Where do you go for that...

You can't really say you know where you're going, but there's no point in idling. One way or another you're bound to run into people worth interacting with. Rather than getting a taxi to take you somewhere, you begin aimlessly walking on your freshly fixed up leg. (Does it count as being fixed up if the bones and everything were entirely replaced?)

You continue walking well into the evening, trying to familiarize yourself with the streets. Along the way you make mental notes of a few important locations, like hotels and grocery stores so you can survive out here. You aren't having the easiest time though. Neither your experience in this world with the streets of Italian cities or the streets of your home city before this whole thing started help you much here. Something about the small town alleys and roads is just horribly unfamiliar, and you keep getting twisted and turned around.

That's why you confusedly walk past an unassuming red mailbox four seperate times before you stop and look around. You're certain you took two left turns and a single right turn, and you ended up in the same place. That's when it hits you. Reimi is nowhere to be seen but... this is definitely her alley. Somehow, wandering through Morioh, you ended up in purgatory.

Once the initial shock wears off, you wonder just what you ought to do. Reimi doesn't seem to be present, for whatever reason. You don't really know enough about this place to speculate too deep, but according to everything you know so far she should be here. Everything else has lined up right. Maybe this place is just bigger than you think and she's somewhere deeper inside?

At the very least, that's a theory you can test. So, naturally, you begin walking through the streets. It takes several loops back to the same alley with the mailbox and the vending machine before you suddenly find a third path to walk down. After quite a bit more experimentation, you find that whatever the spacial topography of this place is, it doesn't always lead back to the one place. You can find different locations just by exploring enough.

Eventually, you come across what looks like a traditional Shinto shrine. You haven't seen Reimi or her dog anywhere, but in here you see a girl with her hair dyed blue wearing an outfit you vaguely recognize as being that of a shrine maiden. When you approach, however, she stands up and turns around, revealing herself to be... Kassandra?! The girl from that office who fucking isekai'd you?!

>Stunned silence.
>Get up in her face and ask her what the fuck she was thinking when she sent you here and how could she jab you with that needle without asking and...

You may be a hardboiled Italian gang member in this world, but fundamentally you're still a twenty year old looking at a cute girl right now. As much as you realize this isn't the most rational response, you casually waltz up to her with your hands in your pockets. She smiles at you as you approach her, up until you try to speak.

Flaw Activated: Pocket Pasta

"Hey uh... Kass. Funny um... funny thing... meeting you at manga-- I mean at a manga cafe-- I mean--" Your casual look quickly turns into a clueless, flustered one as you stumble over your words. "meeting... meeting you here. W-wanna go to a manga cafe and--"

You're cut off by her as she laughs in a way which you quietly hope is amused and not mocking. "Tomo-kun, you've gone almost a whole day acting like this tough mafia guy and the moment you see me you crumble into a dumb, stuttering mess. It's so cute." She gives you a condescending pat on the head and bounces backward, clasping her hands together behind her back. "Anyways, it's nice seeing you in person again. You should probably get the obvious questions out of the way now."

"Yeah uh... right...", you mumble, breaking eye contact with her for long enough to try and regain some of your lost pride. "Er... so, I thought the whole 'new world' thing meant I wouldn't be meeting people from my old world?"

"Mmmyeah? I mean you're right. What about it?" She cocks her head, like the question you asked doesn't make any sense.

You blink, giving her an even more confused response. "Then... why are you here?"

"Wow. Big assumption, bucko." She grins, stepping away from you and wandering toward the shrine. "Who ever told you I was from your world, huh?"

This elicits an exasperated sigh from you. It's probably related to that Elohim thing, if you had to guess. "Fine. Fair point. Frankly, there are a lot of things that don't make sense to me about this. But..."

>I want to know whatever you can tell me. Being in the dark sucks. (Big Exposition dump later)

"I have to be honest. It kind of pisses me off knowing so little about this situation. So you should just tell me what you know or I'll--"

"You'll what, beat me up with your stand?" She raises an eyebrow, looking entirely unthreatened by the possibility.

You give her a concerned look in response, shaking your head. "No? I was... going to say I would leave right now since I wouldn't want anything to do with you anymore. Geez."

"Wha--" On top of seeming surprised by your answer, she actually seems genuinely distressed when you say that. "No way! I just started to have fun watching you!!"

Despite being so cute, you have to admit... she's kinda self-centered. "Well, then what's it gonna be?"

"Ugh. Fiiiine. I wanted to keep the mystery but whatever." Her pout is still adorable though. You feel the spaghetti escaping from your pants again. "Sit down here and I'll tell you everything I'm allowed to say."

Sitting down where you were instructed to, you lean back and listen to an extended conversation all about the nature of your little trip to Morioh, and the circumstances under which it took place. She doesn't reveal much about your life in this world as an Italian gang member, claiming that she's "not gonna spoil everything," but you learn quite a bit about just what an 'Elohim' is and why you're here. When you think about it, the whole dialogue you have is pretty long. So long that if you were to, hypothetically, write it out for someone, it'd take a while and fill up a lot of space. You probably wouldn't be able to do it on the fly. You'd probably have to tell them that you'll do it later and give it to them when they're done, so you can keep doing what you're doing right now. Hypothetically.

With that out of the way, you let out a long sigh, laying back on the ground and staring up at the sky. She didn't answer everything you wanted to know...

>Why are you here? Did she guide you to this shrine, or did you just stumble upon it? If she wanted you here, why?
>What is this place? Obviously you vaguely know it's Reimi's alleyway, a place between the worlds of the living and the dead, but what is this shrine doing here?
>What's going on with your Mom in the real world? You didn't exactly let her know you were just gonna go missing suddenly...

"So uh... is it cool if like... hang out?" You silently thank the fact that you're staring up and not looking at Kass now. It makes things a lot easier for you. "Yknow. Just for a little while. I'll get back to my job as a gang-star soon."

"Mmhmm!" She cheerfully responds, acting like she was waiting for you to ask that. If she wasn't cute, and also something vaguely like a deity, her condescension might rub you the wrong way. "I'm not about to let you stay the night, if you were thinking of getting up to some funny business. But yeah, feel free to come here whenever you start to miss me! Or if you need somewhere to hide out. I'm pretty sure you're one of like, three mortals who should be capable of getting here. Four if you end up letting Rohan read your mind. So you shouldn't do that probably. Dumb OP stand powers..."

You give a small chuckle, suddenly remembering that the girl you're next to is just as much of a weeb as you are. And thinking of that reminds you of her office. Thinking of her office reminds you of... "Oh shit. I didn't tell my Mom I was going to disappear, fuck!"

"Oh yeah? That's no good." She folds her arms, sitting up and looking down at you. "Want me to give her a message?"

"Uhh... yeah. You probably should. Just tell her that... like... one of my online friends got really sick, so I spent all the cash I had to go see him on an impulse. I don't have the money to come back home yet, but it's okay because his parents are taking care of me while I keep him company. Feed her something about the doc' saying me being around really improves his chances of recovering, so I'm gonna be gone until he gets better."

"Um. Yeah, I'll tell her when I get a chance." For some reason, Kass seems surprised at the ease with which you came up with a lie to tell your own Mother. You're not sure why. "You're not gonna like... ask to see her?"

Trait Activated: Independent Spirit -- Homesick status avoided

"Huh? Nah, it's fine. It's not like she's ninety, she's not gonna die 'cause I left home for a while." You really don't get why she's making such a big deal out of this. Maybe it's a girl thing?

Kass seems to get over it though, sighing and standing up, stretching her legs. "Well, if you're gonna be here for a while do you wanna see something cool?" You give her a confused nod and stand up, following her toward the shrine. "I didn't make this shrine or anything, I'm just spending my time here. This is actually an important location for Morioh. A sort of spirit happens to live here... wanna guess what kind it is?"

"Uh..."

>An evil spirit trapped between life and death? Is this the thing that drags you away when you try to leave and look back?

"Is it... whatever those hands are? The evil spirit that drags you away if you turn around when you try to leave? Some awful creature trapped between life and death, feeding on the poor souls who come here unaware?"

"Ooh, nice guess!" The girl exclaims, leading you inside the shrine. "Not a correct one, but I could totally see that."

You raise an eyebrow, folding your arms as you're brought inside what seems to amount to a wooden shack. "Then what kind of 'spirit' is it?"

"Iiiit's..." She grins, leading you up to a curtain. She suddenly pulls it aside, and you're greeted by a very strange sight as she shouts, "Tadaaaaa!!!"

To your eyes, the thing looks like a silent, faceless, gold-glowing version of... Josuke. You have absolutely no idea why this would be here, but the hair alone is enough for you to be sure it's him. Just as you're about to ask exactly what it is, Kass tells you, "This thing is Morioh's shining gold spirit! Literally!" Apparently your confused expression compels her to explain in more depth. "Uh... well, baaasically this thing is like... this town's guardian angel. It's a spirit that was born of the pure-hearted determination to live happy, peaceful lives which this town was founded upon!

"The reason it looks kinda like Josuke is 'cause Josuke looks like it. These things are essentially the collective soul of a community, and every so often somebody in that community will exemplify the qualities of their town's spirit almost perfectly. When that happens some metaphysical junk causes them to mimic the way the spirit looks. The cool thing is that little miracles will tend to happen around this person thanks to the spirit, like a regular guy pulling a dozen people out of a burning building or a kid managing to turn a complete scumbag into a good person overnight just by punching them really hard. Usually these spirit avatars just end up being community leaders that show up out of nowhere to bring everyone together in a crisis, but in some cases like with Josuke they'll clear out stuff that's a lot more subtle and malignant."

You... think you understand. But you also really don't like the way the 'spirit' is staring at you. You feel like it's glaring at you, despite it having no face and not making any noise. "Well uh... that's pretty cool. I'd rather leave now though." Kass doesn't even get a chance to ask what's wrong before you walk out, shaking off the sensation of hostility. You have to wonder exactly why it made you feel that way.

For some reason, the girl doesn't come out when you do. You're not sure what she's doing in there, and she doesn't seem to question why you left when she does show up again. You shrug it off though, thinking about what you want to do next. You're planning on leaving soon, so you probably only have time for one last thing.

"So..." You speak up in a quiet moment, a pensive look forming on your face, "Could you explain why exactly you feel compelled to help me here? I'm a loser NEET who still lives with his mom. Or I was, I guess."

"Wha?" She gives you an expression like you just asked a bafflingly stupid question, before asking, "What exactly do you mean? Like, why help you in Morioh? Or like why did I bring you over to this world in the first place? Or like... why am I telling you all this?"

You hadn't really thought about the question too much, so you shrug. "I guess a bit of all three? I'm just not sure why exactly you think I deserve the attention. What do you stand to gain from this?"

Your question receives a swift reply in the form of Kass knocking her knuckles against your forehead. For some reason she seems pissed at you, and her tone is lacking the slight affectation she's been putting on when talking to you. "You dumbass. I told you this is my job, but even if it wasn't I'd still want to do it anyways." The look in her eyes makes you immediately shy away. "You being a loser NEET is why I'm doing it. I know I told you earlier to think of this whole thing as a sort of trial, but have you really not realized what else it is? Why I shoved you into a world you're familiar with and gave you some purpose in it? It's not like there aren't other methods, yknow."

For some reason the way she says that sends chills down your spine, like her every word is a cube of ice slowly sliding down your back. You get the feeling that the question you asked really damaged her opinion of you. "Ah... uh..." Her friendly persona seems almost entirely missing now, replaced by a side of her so intensely serious that you don't know how she wants you to respond.

"Tomoya, just answer the question. The whole Isekai thing, why do you think we're doing this? What do you think this is supposed to be?"

"It's a rehabilitation program, right?" You fold your arms, trying to remain confident in the face of her icy disposition. "You want to help people who're stuck doing nothing to get back on their feet. That's really my best guess for why you'd see any point in helping me out."

Your answer only earns you a sigh, Kass raising her hand in your direction dismissively. Suddenly, you feel a strong wind start to push you back toward the shrine's gate, sending you stumbling back out of it. You immediately try to step back inside, but that same wind picks up, violently blowing back against you and keeping you from taking a step inside. Kass, meanwhile, is shaking her head and walking toward the shrine, calling back, "Spend some more time in Morioh, Tomo-kun. I shouldn't have let you in here so soon, I realize that now. You can come back when you figure out why I'm so disappointed in you."

Considering the circumstances, a part of you feels like you should be pissed, but more than anything you feel... crestfallen. It kinda feels like you just got dumped, even though it's not like you were dating her or anything. Frankly, you're not really sure how to deal with these feelings. All you know is that you want to take your mind off of them, so you start walking.

Before you know it, you reach the familiar part of the alleyway. Reimi still seems to be missing. You don't spare much time thinking about her either, hardly in the right mood for meeting more new people. Instead, you just make your way out of her alley, stepping out with Owson grocery to your right and a busy street in front of you. The sun is falling from the sky, and you can see that it'll be night soon. Where should you go...

Shoving everything you're thinking about behind you, you pull out your phone and call up a taxi. The weird looks you're getting are a little disconcerting though. You swear you've composed yourself, you look just like a tourist. Why did that woman walking your way just cross the street and keep walking toward you? What the hell? The way these people are treating you is pissing you off.

Flaw Revealed: Emotions On Your Sleeve

When the taxi arrives, you climb into the back. The driver must be a pretty meek guy, since he doesn't really make eye contact with you and just quietly asks, "Where to, sir?" You don't think he's very well suited for this job.

"I need a hotel. What options do I have in Morioh?", you ask, not sounding snippy or demanding in the slightest.

"Ah! Uhm..." You can tell the guy is at least doing his best. He just has trouble talking to you, like he thinks the slightest faux pas will cause something bad. You're betting he isn't great with foreigners and thinks he's gonna lose a sale if he slips up. "Well sir... there are several good options around here. My... my first choice would be the Morioh Grand Hotel, sir. It'll run you anywhere from six to thirty thousand yen a night, depending on the room you get, but it... it has lots of amenities for anyone visiting town. Great room service, plus it's right by the coast and they have their own taxi service so you wouldn't need to wait to get picked up. I hear they even have a bank right inside the building, if you need to make any financial transactions, sir!

"There are other options though, if you don't want to spend that much. Shortly south of here is a place called the Crown Jewel Inn. You can get a room there for four thousand a night, but you won't get nearly as many conveniences as with the Morioh Grand, sir. O-or... uh... there's probably no point in mentioning this, but... if you're really looking to save cash... I know about a hostel just out of town that only charges one thousand per night for a bed. You wouldn't really have much privacy there, but if you're strapped for cash it's at least a roof over your head and a mattress to sleep on for the night."

As you ponder what you'll answer, you open your wallet and find that at the moment you've only got a total of four-thousand and eighty yen. You still have plenty of foreign currency, and a bank account which your boss should've deposited funds into, but neither of those are immediately usable.

"The Crown Jewel. And make it quick, it's getting late."

The driver gives you a nod and starts driving, getting you through the streets to your destination about as quick as you could've hoped. He asks for the fare and you casually pay him as you slip out of the car, pleasantly surprised that you had exact change for the ride. Stepping up onto the curb, you look at the meager hotel. It's obviously nothing special, but all you really need is a room of your own to sleep in. They even have a sign advertising their "Cheap ¥4000 Rooms!"

That's when it hits you. With what you just paid the taxi driver, you now have a total of exactly 3600 yen. So... not enough to pay for the room. You really should've thought this through. As your face fills with panic, you start to flip through your options to figure out what to do here. Spinning around, you see the taxi starting to drive off and make your decision.

>Get directions to a nearby bank and walk there to get some cash
>Look around in hopes you'll find a way to make a quick four hundred
>Head inside and beg the receptionist to give you a small discount for the first night
>Chase down the taxi and tell him you changed your mind about where you want to go

So what do you guys think we got wrong with why we were sent here? Assuming it's not some dumb reason like entertainment or sacrificing souls to [insert eldritch deity here].
>>
>>3626827
The reason rests on whether this is a "fictional world" or "a real world that resembles fiction."
If this is a simulation of Jojo Part 4, we have to assume that the reason has specifically to do with the person going through the trial and with Kassandra. That's why I suggested rehabilitation, and I don't have an alternative suggestion other than entertainment for the gods.
If, on the other hand, we are in a real, alternate reality that merely resembles fiction due to the infinite nature of the multiverse, it's possible that the gods are taking useless people from worlds that are on track and sending them to worlds that need some sort of correction. This would lend itself more to a traditional isekai narrative, but the "fictional setting" thing still has me on the fence about that. You'd also expect Kassandra to have told us in advance if that were the case.
Alternatively we're in some kind of Madoka situation where our subjective experience generates some sort of mystical yield for the gods, and Kassandra is playing the "you should already know" card as an excuse to keep us in the dark.

Letting out a sigh, you grumble and make your way into the hotel building. After a short conversation with the woman behind the counter inside, you walk out of the building with knowledge of the nearest ATM you could use. Unfortunately, it's far enough away that it would take you at least an hour to get there and back on foot, and nearly as long if you waited for a cab to pick you up and take you there.

Regretting every single life decision you made up to this point, you begin the walk toward the ATM. You really can't wait for this night to be over. As you walk, you think more about your options and begin to wonder if you made the worst possible choice. At the very least you could've spent a single night in the hostel, and the worst possible outcome you can see there would be that you get attacked by a stand user, who you could steal a part from. Or you could've gone to the Morioh Grand Hotel and you'd probably already have a nice soft bed. You wouldn't have enough cash on hand, but the driver told you they had a bank inside the building, which means they probably had ATMs as well. On top of that, your vague recollection of the name of the hotel coalesces as you remember, the Morioh Grand is where Jotaro was staying during part 4.

By the time you reach the ATM, you've soured more than a glass of milk left out in the sun for a month. And now you have to deal with outdated technology too. It takes you at least ten minutes just to figure out how to access the account without a card, which you're fortunate enough to even be able to do, and from that point you need several more minutes to work out how you withdraw from the clunky box.

Eventually you get to a screen telling you that the account has a fresh fifty thousand in it, with an input line for withdrawal amount.

>How much do you withdraw from the account?

>25,000 Yen
>>
>>3626888

>>
>>3626888
>25,000 Yen
>>
You tell the machine to give you half of the money in the account and wait nearly a minute before it finally spits your money out. If you weren't so fucking tired you might have just beaten the shit out of the ATM from your sheer aggravation, but instead you just begin the walk back to the hotel. Why did it have to be so warm and humid today? You know summer is beginning, but it's still not fair goddamnit.

Since when has anything in your life been fair though? It's always been this bullshit, doing stupid things for stupid reasons. Usually because someone expects more from you than you'd ever be capable of giving them, because nobody seems to understand you. Mom thinks you're going to start a tech company or something and become a billionaire. Your boss in this world thinks you're going to be able to go into a town and carry out a mission all on your own without any help. Kassandra thinks you're going to be able to fucking read her mind to figure out what she's planning. It's all just retarded, unfair treatment, and it pisses you the hell off.

By the time you get back to the hotel, you're too tired, furious, and fed up to even bother trying to figure out why the lady behind the desk is looking at you like she's a deer in the headlights. You just give her the four thousand and she gives you a key. You promptly enter your room and collapse onto the bed, not even bothering to undress before falling asleep.
>>
When you wake up, it's to the sound of a bird squawking loudly outside of your window. Wiping the sleep out of your eyes, you roll out of bed and look around the room. Now that you're actually paying attention, you can see... this room sucks. You weren't expecting anything special, sure, but it's like it was set up by an obsessive minimalist. There aren't any decorations anywhere, and even the bed is just a plain black blanket overtop plain white sheets. Really, the one good thing you can say about the place is the fact that it's at least clean. You're sort of surprised that you can't find any evidence of the previous guest in here. From your experiences traveling with Mom, cheap hotels tend to do an awful job keeping the rooms clean.

It still did it's job though, at least. After doing some basics in the morning to clean yourself up so you don't look like a bum, you begin heading down toward the lobby. After your rest, you're glad to at least be in a better mood than last night. With your head clear, you decide to...

>Give the receptionist your key
>Pay for your room for another night
>Pay for the next five nights

Having finished your business here, you leave the front of the building into the fresh air and the bright sun, shielding your eyes. It seems to nearly be noon. You really slept in, didn't you? Now you've got to figure out where you're going next.

Once again, you don't have any clear path to head down at the moment, so you just begin walking. You have to admit that it might not be the most efficient strategy right now, but you can't deny that it's relaxing. Just wandering through the streets, you can see why Morioh is a vacation town. The pleasant sun shining down on you with the cool ocean breeze blowing through the street is like nothing you had back home. It puts you in a very pleasant mood.

Perhaps too pleasant, as you're so relaxed you don't realize someone has grabbed your arm and begun dragging you until you're fully in the alleyway. In an instant you spread your feet apart and back as far away as you can, wrenching your arm free of the man's grip. Immediately preparing for a fight, you analyze your opponent before he has a chance to attack you. To your surprise, he looks to be a pretty old man, and he doesn't look ready for a fight. Even more surprising, he gives you a grin and... laughs?

"Oh ho ho! I was right about this one." His voice sounds cracked and dry like he hasn't had a glass of water in years. "Your physique may not be anything special, but that's perfect. I think I've found my ace in the hole here."

You spit back a venomous, "Who are you? What do you want?", preparing 「The Man」 to attack at any moment.

The old bastard doesn't seem to feel threatened by you though, raising up his hands apologetically. "I am sorry for being so suddenly rough with you, young man. You can call me Sumori. I simply wanted to test you. Before you ask, yes, you passed. Which means I have a lucrative opportunity for you."

"...opportunity?" You don't lower your guard, but you take on a less aggressive pose, giving the old bastard a chance.

"Yes, yes!" It seems like he's glad you're being receptive. Or maybe he's scamming you and thinks you've just taken the bait. "A perfect opportunity to make some money! You look like you have some good eyes, so I just need your help with something simple. Come with me."

You don't exactly have any really good reason not to do as he says, despite your suspicion, so you follow behind him cautiously. Sumori takes you along to what looks like a side-street which hasn't been used for years. The only people of note are a couple of teenagers sitting across the street smoking cigarettes and a tough-looking guy leaning against the wall of a small concrete shed. The shed is next to what looks to be some kind of downward ramp that's been covered by a tarp. Judging by the barely legible words on the dilapidated sign next to it, this is some kind of abandoned underground car park.
>>
Sumori has a short conversation with the man standing by the shed. The conversation includes the old guy explaining that you're with him, and a ten-thousand yen note being subtly passed from Sumori to the bouncer. You then follow the old man inside and the two of you head down the stairs within, making your way into the car park. Inside, you can tell why the place was abandoned. You'd bet this place would just collapse completely if an earthquake happened. The concrete inside is crumbling in various places, you see cracks along all the support pillars, and the remains of a ton of homeless camps are left inside. For some reason though, there aren't any homeless people in or around those camps.

As you head deeper inside, you actually see some people in here. None of them look like they're homeless though, dressed in clothes more fitting for bankers and businessmen than bums. As you're brought into the crowd by Sumori, you see what everyone's looking at. There seems to be a circle of benches gathered together, inside of which are two buff dudes slugging it out. The puzzle comes together as one of them collapses to the ground and you hear an announcer shout out the winner's name, telling the crowd that those who bet on him to come collect their winnings. They're betting on the results of these fights.

Personally, you find the whole practice unpleasant, but you can't deny that a part of you wants a slice of the pie. Besides, you still need to figure out if there's a stand user here, so you don't object when Sumori takes you up to the bookie and tells you, "Alright just bear with me here. Bet as much as you have on Ouji Sotaro, son. It'll pay off, I can promise ya that." Looking at the information the bookie just scrawled onto a chalkboard, Ouji Sotaro has one to two odds of winning his next fight, which means he's more likely than not to beat his opponent.

>You should just test the waters. You'll bet ¥1000 on him, if he wins you'll earn ¥500.
>The old man might be right here. You'll bet ¥5000 on him, if he wins you'll earn ¥2500.
>Nothing ventured, nothing gained. You'll bet ¥10000 on him, if he wins you'll earn ¥5000.
>Fuck it, you're going all in on it. You'll bet ¥20000 on him, if he wins you'll earn ¥10000.
>You'd rather not. You don't really want to get into this betting ring, even if it means losing out on finding a stand user.

Frankly, you really don't trust the old bastard as far as you can throw him. You pull out five thousand and hand it over to the bookie, telling him who you want to bet on. You then see the old man giving you an exaggerated look of disappointment as the two of you make your way to the edge of the ring. "You really should've trusted me on this, son. I'm just looking out for a youngun who looked lost, really."

With a roll of your eyes, you ignore him and stand by the edge of the ring, watching as the two newest contenders come into the ring. You look closer as the horse you bet on, is introduced by the announcer. "Here comes the branch champ, everyone! The one, the only... Ouji Sotaro!" The man is wearing a cocky smirk as he spins around for the crowd to see. His outfit is rather interesting, with his scruffy pair of jeans contrasting against the bright red wool beanie with black patches and the long rainbow scarf wrapped around his neck, hanging all the way down to his waist. The thing that really catches your eye though are the gloves. You'd assumed this place didn't have many rules, if any, judging by the brutality of the last fight, and yet this guy is wearing a pair of black boxing gloves. Wouldn't that just put him at a disadvantage?

Sotaro doesn't seem like he's going to take them off however, and the fight starts once the announcer is done hyping his opponent up as a "local legend." The bout begins with both fighters sizing up their opponents. Sotaro is the first to make a move, suddenly sprinting forward and seeming to take the other guy by surprise with a hook. He doesn't stay surprised for long though, recovering and swinging back with a flurry of punches that batter against Sotaro's guard mercilessly. The fight continues in a similar manner for a while, with the champ blocking a seemingly endless stream of punches from the burly guy he's fighting, occasionally getting in a good hit.

After a while, you can see who the winner is going to be, and everyone knows it. As persistent as the challenger is, his attacks get slower and weaker with each hit he takes from Sotaro. Problem is, at this rate, it could take half an hour before the fight ends, and the whole crowd seems to just be getting bored. Sotaro seems aware of this, and after a short while he does something that definitely increases excitement. Instead of continuing to defend himself, he bounces back out of the range of those fists, and keeps himself perpetually just far enough away to not get hit. While he does this, he starts to fiddle with one of his gloves.
>>
You initially assume that he's taking it off, but the reaction from the announcer is so bombastic that you're thrown off slightly. The man with the mic shouts, "Ladies and gentlemen, he's doing it! Ouji Sotaro is bringing out his Bombs! For those of you in the crowd who've never watched him fight before, this is a special technique developed by the expert fighter. According to what he's told us, he tightens the strings on his gloves, cutting off the flow of blood to his hands! This removes the feeling in them, allowing him to hit using his full force without feeling the painful blowback from such powerful strikes!"

You'd be suspicious of that explanation even under normal circumstances, but you immediately realize it's completely wrong when you look back at Sotaro. A glowing energy begins to radiate from the fist he adjusted the glove on, and you can see the glove seem to warp into a smaller form, turning into a garish set of golden knuckledusters clutched inside his fist. Just seeing the crowd's lack of reaction to this tells you... it must be a stand ability. The crowd must not be able to see it.

The fight ends an instant later. Presumably just getting pissed off at Sotaro for showing off and dodging all his attacks, his opponent rushes forward blindly and completely misses the leg Sotaro just extended to trip him. As his feet fall out from under him, Sotaro swings his arm down and smashes a punch right into his temple, making a wet crunching noise. The sheer force of the hit causes the guy's head to bounce a few feet into the air after hitting the concrete. Naturally, the spectacle receives an uproarious cheer from the crowd around the ring, with the announcer calling Sotaro as the winner before anyone's even entered the ring to check on the other guy.
>>
Soon enough you're over by the counter, accepting your winnings and idly wondering exactly what you're going to do about the stand user. After he left the ring he was pretty quickly surrounded by a group of visibly armed guards, so you can tell that just confronting him right away won't be an option. As you collect your winnings though, the old man grabs you and drags you out of the crowd, giving you a cheerful grin. "See, son? Wasn't this a great time? This really is a fun place. You ought to make it up to me for showing it to you.

"How's about this..." You already look defensive as Sumori begins his proposition, but he doesn't give you time to object. "You head in there and go a few rounds in the ring for me! It'll be great, I can tell you're the fighting type, and you'd make money if you won fights. If you lose, no harm no foul right?" He still isn't remotely trustworthy though, and that hits home as he finishes his pitch by saying, "Of course, you could always just say no. Just like how I could always head to the police and tell them about this delinquent I caught betting on illegal fights with a wallet full of dirty money. But neither of us want that, right?"

Any scrap of trust you might've had in the old guy disappears as you find out what his game is. Drag unsuspecting youths into an illegal fighting ring, get them to make a bet, and then blackmail them into fighting for him in the ring. Absolutely despicable.

>Even if you don't like this, you'll do it. It seems like the best way to get close to the stand user.

You can't quite keep the look of utter disgust off of your face, but you grimace and tell the human trash before you, "Fine. I'm in. Just don't expect that we're going to get all friendly and it'll work out."

The moment you say that, his fake smile disappears completely and he gives you a contemptful look, turning around. "Fine, kid. Go tell the bookie you want to sign up for the fights, I'll be waiting."

Silently planning to do some awful things to the son of a bitch, you do as told and make your way to sign up. You're only slightly surprised at how quickly they set you up. It's almost like they're preying on headstrong fools who don't realize how dangerous this business is. Only one question you're asked is really meaningful, the rest you fill out with one of your convenient false identities. However, the person collecting your info asks, "So uh, how do ya fight, prettyboy? What's yer style? Boxin, Judo, some other martial art? Or didja get all your experience from street fights? Tha 'nnouncer needs somethin to work off of."

>Sleight of hand. You make sure your opponent can't even see your attacks coming.
>Boxing. You've developed a technique for punching so fast it's nearly invisible to the naked eye.
>Magic. You don't even touch your opponents when you fight.

The guy behind the counter gives you a weird look as you answer, but he writes it down anyways and tells you to move on. It isn't long after this that your bout is announced. Or, more accurately, "Alfio Petri"'s bout is announced. You're put up against another first-timer. He looks like he's just a few years younger than you are, and he's wearing some pretty scruffy, worn-out clothes. If you had to guess, he's probably in this for the cash reward more than anything else. He seems like he's been in enough scraps to know that a fight like this isn't something you want to take part in if you can avoid it.

"In the far corner we have our first new contestant, the Well-Dressed Italian: Alfio Petri!!!", the announcer bellows. He's definitely charismatic enough to get a group of people excited. Even you're getting pumped up. "On the other side, we've got another new fighter, a poor kid from S City who ran away here to Morioh just so he could get away from a ruthless, dangerous loan shark! Fighting tooth and nail for his own survival, the Scrapper: Obi Ryobe!!!"

You tune out his voice and prepare for the match, planning out your strategy.

This boi! Awesome thread, btw.

"Those of you in the audience will want to look at Alfio Petri closely. He claims to be some kind of fighting magician, capable of using his magic powers to take down his enemies without even touching them! I know I'll be looking closely to see if he really can pull off a trick like that!" The announcer certainly is trying to hype you up for the crowd. Claiming to be some kind of wizard is pretty extraordinary though. However, you do see the champ, watching the match from a folding chair surrounded by guards, start to look more closely at you as he hears you have magic powers. Has he figured it out already?

You don't have time to dwell on that as a bell rings out, signaling the start of the match. First things first, you attempt to activate your stand's ability. You don't see anything happen, but you can definitely feel it. As you release 「The Man」, it takes a second for your eyes to properly settle on him. For some reason, the parts of him that are filled in are tinted a very dark grey color, presumably as a part of the ability you activated. You can also see that his neck, where you stole from the scam artist, is glowing with a purple energy.

The fight is already going though, and you don't have too much time to think about it. Ryobe tries to rush in on you, but fortunately you're at least quick enough to keep away from him in the ring while your stand steps up behind him. You decide to start simple, having 「The Man」 whisper in his ear, "You're not sure about this. Fighting a magician sounds scary. You should keep your distance." It's somewhat strange, seeing your stand speak without a face or a mouth, but you can hear the noise coming from him.

Then you get punched in the gut. To be fair, you did manage to tense up your core in time for it to not hurt as much, but it still took you by surprise. You're not sure why, but it seems your suggestion didn't take hold. You're forced to have your stand grab Ryobe's shoulder and yank him away from you to avoid taking another hit, backing away so you can recover. The announcer, as always, is making a show of this. "Ladies and gentlemen, it's looking like Petri's 'magic' claims might just be a bunch of hot air!"

You need to figure out your next move soon...

>Try to figure out why your stand's ability didn't work on him. You can keep this fight going for a while while you work it out.

While you were planning on drawing this out for as long as it took to figure out the solution to this problem, you don't nearly need the time you were expecting. The moment you see the look on Ryobe's face as he charges toward you it all clicks together. You have your stand quietly tell him to go for a right hook, a perfectly reasonable option here. The way he shifts his body to jab you with his left fist gives you all the confirmation you need.

Skill Activated: Stand Savant

The moment before he comes into striking range, you spin around on your heel, facing your back toward him and folding your arms confidently. This leaves you facing directly toward the champ, Ouji Sotaro. Your body naturally shifts into a powerful pose, your hips tilting and your head cocking slightly as you look dead into Sotaro's eyes. You've won this fight, and you make sure that everyone can see it.

The moment Ryobe comes into striking range, he feels a powerful gut punch come out of nowhere. You don't move a muscle, but your stand begins beating him back, pushing him across the ring effortlessly. You don't really care about him though. What you care about is the look on Ouji Sotaro's face. He looks just as baffled by the scene as everyone else in the crowd. That means one of two things. Either he can't see what's happening because he doesn't actually have a stand, or...

Stand Ability Revealed: The Man In The Shadows

He can't see your stand because you didn't steal the ability you thought you did. Instead of gaining a power that lets you send subliminal messages, you gained a power that hides your stand's presence, even from other stand users. A power which might just be even stronger than subconscious manipulation...

You have a job to finish though. As 「The Man Who Sold the World」 sends a barrage of blows toward your opponent, you announce loudly to him, "Let this be a lesson to you, punk. This world of fighting isn't the kind of world you want to live in. You should do everything you can to crawl your way out of it, not dig yourself deeper in. So get lost, kid." With that, a final uppercut sends him flying up over the benches making up the ring, and he lands on the ground half-conscious.

With that, you're declared the winner, and you look back at Sotaro one last time before leaving the ring. You can beat him. You will beat him. Then, you'll make sure he can't keep using his stand to beat down those powerless to fight back against it. This is going to be his last day in the ring.

>Head back and wait for your next bout. Collect the prize money too, while you're at it.
>Go find the old bastard and figure out what he's doing.
>You're not going to wait. Challenge the champ to a fight right here, right now.

Without another word, you disappear into the crowd once again. As you push your way through, you get just as many people looking at you with nervous, scared expressions as you do people congratulating you and cheering you on. It's almost intoxicating, and you can see why someone could get sucked into this sort of business. You, however, have better things to do than beat the shit out of people for cash and this small bit of fame.

Soon enough, after talking to a few people, you end up five thousand yen richer and are now informed of your upcoming matches. Up next you'll have to complete two more fights, then you'll get to challenge the champ. Fortunately, your next one isn't for a while, giving you a chance to step away from the crowd and breathe. It's hard to believe that you've only been here for around a day and yet you've already gotten yourself wrapped up in these sorts of shenanigans.

If anything, you feel like you should be completely disoriented. Every part of your simple, calm life at home has turned on it's head. You're stuck in a world which, before, you thought was just a work of fiction. Instead of being lost though, you feel more confident than ever. Frankly, the feeling is wonderful. This new life is like nothing you've ever experienced. You're someone here! You have power, you can do what you want... you've got everything you could've asked for! It's so nice that you feel as though you couldn't go back to your old life again.

You wonder if Kass would be willing to make this situation permanent, if that's even possible...

END OF THREAD #2
>>
Sorry about the silence recently. I've been meaning to continue the thread, but life caught up to me super rapidly and I've been really struggling to find time lately to write for this quest. Unfortunately I'm not sure when I'm going to be less busy, but I'll try to start a new thread sometime next week. Also, the scene between Tomoya and Kass will probably be done by then as well.

If anybody has any questions though, ask them now and I'll try to answer them before the thread dies.

Good luck, Isekai Forever QM. You've got a good story going here.

You’ve got a fucking good quest (although my love for stands already earned a point in your favor)
I’ve forgotten, can we steal from stands too or just people? Stealing from stands seems a bit too OP (at least at the start) but that’s just me
>>
>>3647926
You've stolen parts from people and you've stolen a part from a stand. Also, thank you for the compliment!
>>
>>3647926
We stole a power from a stand, but didn't get to pick which power. I think that uncertainty is the mitigating factor. Imagine trying to steal the timestop from Star Platinum and only getting the ability to stretch your finger, for example.

God bless you bro!
>>
>>3648690
imagine trying to steal epitaph but all you get is the ability to have your forehead face mimic your expressions
>>
>>3648690
>>3648718
Imagine trying to steal from Echoes and all you get is the ability to have your stand say stupid shit in bad engrish.
>>

Aww it’s okay QM you’re doing fine
Also thanks for answering my question
