You are Inari Riku, the result of a fusion between Tamamo no Mae and her living shintai, Captain Kusajishi Riku. At present you are interrogating a representative of the noble Tsunayashiro clan, Tokinada, who was once a classmate of Head Captain Kyōraku and former Captain Ukitake.

He’s a thoroughly disagreeable man, for a variety of reasons. He is entirely overconfident due to his position in life, being a member of a noble clan, but is extremely ambitious due to his low position within that clan. You can tell that he is cruel and dismissive towards those he thinks beneath himself, showing no regard towards your fellow officers in the Gotei 13 and requiring you to give him a tongue-lashing to ensure even basic civility. And the fact that a hollow is sitting at your side is something which must gall him as well.

All things you would be more tolerant of, were he more useful in answering your questions.

“Riku, calming breaths,” Yoruichi taunts you as you fume. “In and hold, release, and hold, and in and hold...”

Meanwhile, Inari thankfully takes over for you. “So, Tsunayashiro Tokinada, this is Inari Ōkami speaking.”

“No kidding?” Tokinada muses, evidently surprised at the names this little meeting has drawn.

“No kidding,” Inari repeats. “So what does it mean to you that Aizen Sōsuke has that missing ability to manipulate shinreiryoku that you thought he lacked?”

“Well,” Tokinada admits. “It’s not good. Not good at all.”

“How positively enlightening,” Yoruichi grumbles. “Thanks to where we were a hundred years ago, you slow...”

“Deep breaths,” you repeat to your wife.

“As for you, Tokinada,” you change the subject. “Tell me this. What do you mean when you say that you ‘had your eye on’ Aizen Sōsuke?”

“Well, Aizen was my junior in the Gotei 13,” Tokinada tries to completely brush aside your question with a non-answer. “What sort of senior would I be if I didn’t keep an eye on my juniors?”

“Don’t mess around with us,” Yoruichi snaps. “You’re trying to be evasive here and it’s not working.”

“I...” Tokinada begins hesitantly, before he probably feels your glare even through the curtain. “I thought he might be able to help me secure a higher position in the Gotei 13. In my estimation he was a man who’d do anything to achieve that same goal, someone I could use.”

“What changed your mind?” Susano’o demands.

“Too independent,” Tokinada declares. “No matter how skilled a cat may be, when what you’re looking for is an obedient dog it won’t do.”

“I cannot even comprehend your words, Tsunayashiro Tokinada,” you admit. “I suppose we are two completely different sorts of people.”

“Guess so,” Tokinada agrees.

“Tell us everything you know about how the Soul King came to be as he is,” you order him. “Omit nothing.”

After several long seconds of silence, no doubt spent trying to decide how dangerous it would be to defy you now, he replies with the truth of the situation. “Well, his body must be whole to use his powers. So the way he is now is the result of separating parts of him, leaving him as far from whole as possible.”

“How many parts?” you press.

“And which?” Tia adds.

“Yes, that too.”

“Left arm, right arm,” Tokinada informs you.

“Pernida and Mimihagi,” Yoruichi whispers, mirroring your thoughts.

“Left leg and right leg,” Tokinada continues.

“No thoughts.”

“Heart, brain...”

“Gerard and… perhaps Gremmy?”

Yoruichi nods, and Tia voices her agreement. “That seems to fit their respective claims and abilities.”

“… and his liver,” Tokinada concludes.

You and Yoruichi exchange a glance before speaking in unison. “Askin.”

> So the real question now is where did Mimihagi go?
I'm hoping there might be some isolated shrine or sacred place that few knew about (even the other gods) where he could go to bunker down.

At the very least, Mimihagi was not working in cahoots with Aizen Shitbaggins and the Sternritter. Hell, in canon he simultaneously gave Yhwach the cold shoulder and flipped him the bird.

>>And so what relationship does Yhwach bear with that?
We already know that the powers of the others returning to the Soul King isn't great, but makes a certain amount of sense that Yhwach, being Izanami's direct son, could command them (and his relationship with them was very much like that of a feudal lord and his most favored servants).

If Izanami is basically brain dead, and Aizen consumed Yhwach's divine essence, then the powers vested in those separated limbs now resides inside of him - and the Hogyoku.

So, basically, the only way to deal with Aizen permanently is to convince Mimihagi to assume his father's throne as Soul King. I'd be a good thing, if there wasn't all of this other bullshittery happening at the same time.

“Alright, so there is a hypothetical I have to ask you about,” you sigh dramatically, already anticipating that the answer won’t be good. “But if all of these independent parts of the Soul King were to die at the same time, what would happen?”

“Then someone could presumably reform the Soul King,” Tokinada dismisses the question. “But nobody could be foolish enough to do that.”

“We did that,” you inform him.

There’s a long pause. “You what now?”

“We killed one arm, the heart, the brain, and the liver, and the other arm is missing,” you summarize. “And we do not know where the legs have been.”

“You say you killed parts of the Soul King!?” Tokinada practically howls. “For gods sake why!?”

“They didn’t give us much choice!” Yoruichi snaps. “Four of them were trying to murder us all.”

“That’s… that’s not good,” Tokinada informs you. “If Aizen reunites all of the Soul King’s body parts he’ll get the power of the Almighty back, along with use of the Amenohoko. He could basically go back to destroying the world like he was going to do before!”

“Good thing Mimihagi is presumably still out there somewhere,” you quickly continue. “So if we can keep Aizen from getting hold of all the parts of the Soul King he cannot pursue his agenda. Problem solved.”

“We don’t know where Mimihagi is,” Yoruichi reminds you.

“You ever did?” Tokinada asks.

“Captain Ukitake,” you reply sternly.

“Ah, that makes sense.”

“So who among the gods will help us at this stage with what must be done?” you ask sternly.

At first, there’s only silence. Inari seems ready to say something, but a sharp glance from Sarutahiko silences her. The same thing happens when Amamikyu tries to speak.

“So you will do nothing,” you surmise. “As has become your tradition.”

“I’ve head enough of this,” Tsukuyomi declares angrily, rising from his seat and gesturing for his two attendants to follow. “I will entertain this pretender no longer.”

“Have I touched a nerve?” you press. “If so, prove me wrong Tsukuyomi-no-kimi. Do something about it. Stand up for yourself.”

With a flick of his wrist Tsukuyomi draws a tantō from his kimono and lunges towards you… painfully slowly. Your foot rises as you drive your knee into the underside of his wrist, then he tumbles onto the tatami from a stomping kick to his gut.

His attendants tumble just as quickly as Yoruichi and Tia knock them out cold with one punch each, then toss them away like a housewife might casually sling a bag of trash to the curb.

Tsukuyomi himself gets to his feet, thrusting again. You catch his wrist effortlessly, spin him through the air like a ragdoll, and slam him down to the tatami with a loud crash. As he tries to recover you step on his right shoulder and twist his arm, so that he drops his knife where it sinks point-first into the floor.

“See, you can attack me because I present myself as a divine representative of the Seireitei,” you explain casually as Sarutahiko rises to his feet and reaches for his jeweled spear. Inari however has other notions, and she and Amamikyu flank the senior earth deity to hedge him in.

“Stay your hand, Daimyōjin-kun,” Inari Ōkami insists in a dangerous tone. “I do believe my daughter aspect has a point she would like to make, and she seems to have illustrated it quite clearly.”

“Has she not, Tsukuyomi-no-kimi?”

After offering a futile attempt at struggling, you feel Tsukuyomi relax his shoulder in acceptance of his defeat. “Finish your thought, Eight-and-a-Half-Tails.”

“And I can fight normally because I am an exception to the ordinary rules,” you continue. “Because of my half-tail I remain a mortal who can tap into a massive wellspring of divine power. However, I am not a full divinity… so there are logically things that I should not expect to be able to do without some assistance.”

“You propose an alliance of sorts,” Amaterasu realizes. “Interesting.”

“If we could find Mimihagi and secure it that would be a good start,” you begin, “but ultimately, the goal needs to be to figure out how to strip Aizen Sōsuke’s ill-gotten powers.”

“That does seem to be the crux of the problem,” Inari sighs, “doesn’t it?”

“His supposed immortality is a problem in and of itself,” Tia agrees calmly.

“And in order to kill him we will need to deal with the powers he got from the Hōgyoku,” you conclude. “As for how to do that I do not know..”

“So that’s what you need help with first,” Tsukuyomi realizes calmly, moving to have Inari and Amamikyu step away from him. “I understand.”

“So can you help?” Yoruichi presses.

“We can,” Amaterasu agrees.

“We should separate into three teams,” you declare. “One team doing archival research with Captain Shihōin, one team doing lab research alongside Captain Urahara. I will head our efforts in tracking down Mimihagi.”

“Agreed,” Amaterasu quickly accepts your idea. “Fudaishi-no-kimi will assist Shihōin Yoruichi-no-kimi, while Kuebiko-no-kimi will assist Captain Urahara-san. Amekushin-otome-no-kimi will in turn assist Kuebiko-no-kimi, as well as Urahara-san.”

“Kuebiko-san has no legs,” Amamikyu whispers over her shoulder to you, “so someone will need to carry him. But he is exceedingly knowledgeable in all matters. As for Fudaishi-san, he’s the god of libraries.”

“As for Inari Riku-no-kimi, I will assist her,” Inari Ōkami insists. “However given the ground she and her Division must cover it would be prudent to assign two more deities along with me. Might I recommend two of the Yama-no-kami?”

“I will contact Ohoyamakui-no-kimi of Hieizan and Shirayama-hime of Hakuzan,” Amaterasu replies. “Expect them within the day.”

“Is this meeting adjourned then?” Omoikane asks.

Tsukuyomi nods, moving to leave the stage. “It is. I will leave first, then Amaterasu-no-kimi will be free to do the same.”

He does precisely that, and then once Ame-no-Uzume tells her the way is clear Amaterasu does the same. Most of the gods leave in an orderly fashion past the prostrated officers of the Gotei 13, until only your group, Inari, and her foxes remain.

You quickly seal your swords, and sigh deeply. “Well, that was enlightening and I hated it.”

“Understandable,” Inari chuckles to herself. “Though you must now understand somewhat why the gods tend to avoid speaking with each other.”

“No kidding,” you grumble. “Some of them are totally out of control… though you and Amamikyu were nice enough, and Omoikane was… well, he’s inoffensive.”

“I’m just surprised that Susano’o was such a prick,” Yoruichi snorts.

You roll your eyes. “Are you though? Guy threw a dead pony at his sister.”

“So, Inari Ōkami,” you sigh, feeling the weight of your time as Inari Riku settling on you bit by bit. “How much help can we expect from the Kami going forward?”

“You do not trust them?” Inari asks you playfully. “Do you not trust me?”

“I trust you to a certain point,” you admit. “But I don’t fully understand the others yet.”

“Understanding takes time,” Halibel observes.

“True,” Yoruichi agrees before giving you a peck on the cheek. “I have to go meet some gods at the manor now. See you some time later tonight, or tomorrow morning depending on how things go.”

“Yeah,” you nod, bumping your head against hers playfully. “See you soon.”

“To answer your question,” Inari tells you calmly, “Fudaishi-no-kimi is incredibly boring, but is the concept of a library personified. In life he defined the rinzō system by which religious manuscripts and scrolls are organized within a kyōzō-style library. So depending on how the Shihōin records are stored he could be capable of near-instantly locating it.”

“It’s more like a treasury,” you explain calmly. “Like the Shōsō-in in Nara, which holds furniture, games, musical instruments, clothing, weaponry, and religious objects all in one place. From what I can tell the documents related to those items kept by my wife’s clan are organized according to the organization of the items themselves.”

“Sounds like a pain,” Halibel comments.

You nod in agreement. “Her own inner world mirrors the organization of the archives, and even she needs some time to retrieve anything stored there despite several human lifetimes of training and experience.”

“I had no idea she was so clever,” Inari muses.

“It’s all down to her memory,” you shrug. “And what of these mountain gods?”

“Gods of terrain and hunting,” Inari explains. “The two who I have requested are from peaks significant in Buddhism and Shintō, including Mount Hiei.”

Hiei-zan, home to the Enryaku-ji temple and its infamous rampaging sōhei which once threatened Kyōto itself, as well as the site of the thousand-day kaihōgyō… a meditative practice which involves walking for more than fifty miles a day for seven years. This is done to embody a living Fudō Myōō… if the kami of Hieizan is as fierce and tenacious as his peak’s reputation then he will be an invaluable asset.

This is something of a sensitive topic, but now is perhaps the best chance you could ask for to deal with it in private before it grows any more sensitive. So you take this chance.

“You know, Shintō seems to have a thing for grouping divine powers,” you muse quietly. “The three zōka sanshin, the shichifukujin gods of fortune, the three siblings Amaterasu, Susano’o, and Tsukuyomi, the three aspects of Inari...”

“Where do you intend to take this?” Halibel asks you warily.

“What I mean to say is that all of those trinities and… whatever you call a grouping of seven? Every one of them has different dynamics. Some of which involve literal incest.”

“This isn’t that,” Halibel points out.

“No, it’s way less weird than that,” you agree. “Which is why I’m pretty confident it’s all gonna work out somehow, you know? Whatever the details end up being. So I for one don’t feel like worrying about it at all, and I don’t really think anyone else should either.”

“You say that even after having met Amaterasu-no-kimi and Tsukuyomi-no-kimi?” Halibel muses in a slightly wry tone. “How confident.”

“It’s easy when you have people you can be confident in,” you shrug.

You arrive at the Ninth Division, walking directly towards the main offices of the Press. With a quick series of claps, startling the few shinigami working there on what’s a fairly ‘down’ day across the Seireitei, you start barking orders.

“Alright everyone, up, up, up!” you call out. “Fetch about two dozen square floor cushions and bring them to the main meeting room, and have tea prepared for guests! Notify the Tres Bestias, miss Neliel, and the Commandos to meet here as soon as possible! And have Bambietta Basterbinne notified!”

A chorus of hasty shouts confirm your orders as the Ninth Division snaps into action. As always, their ability to hustle does them great credit.

"This will be a formal event!" you bark, continuing your orders. "Slide open the walls facing the garden and assemble all available team leaders. I wish to brief them before our guests' arrival."

"Halibel, please have your lot prepare as well," you add. "And make sure that Apacci looks presentable?"

"I can only promise to try."

There's even more scrambling as several team leaders, who were in the process of carrying out your previous orders, switch or otherwise reassign their tasks so that they can assemble. Once you feel that an adequate number of them have rushed in from around the grounds, you begin to explain the situation to them.

"Our Division will soon be visited by three kami," you begin. "Inari Okami is already here, but two mountain kami will soon join her. Stay out of their way, don't make eye contact, always bow deeper than they do. Kowtow if in doubt. Our mission's going to be to track down a missing divinity, Mimihagi, and our guests will be coordinating with us. Many of you will be leading search teams, some of you may need to work closely either with arrancar or with Kami."

There's a lot of stunned discussion of that statement, so you quickly head it off. "Now clear out. You'll get the short version from the Commandos or the Auxilia."

The confusion gives way to a series of acknowledgements, and the team leaders file out of the room just in time for the Commandos to begin replacing them.

"How's my hair?" Rangiku demands of Mirai.

"Blonde," Mirai replies.

"Smartass," your daughter grumbles, pulling her hair back instinctively to make sure it's all at least on the right side of her shoulders. "So, ready for round two?"

"As much as I ever am," you grumble. "Come on, let's get to it folks."

"I'm actually kinda stoked," Kai admits as he settles into his own seat. "It's exciting, ya know."

Mirai shrugs as she takes her seat, but Rukia seems to disagree.

"If by that you mean terrifying," she admits.

You swiftly re-release your full eight-and-a-half-tailed state, then take your own seat inside the meeting room. “Mirai, how does my hair look?”

Your co-Third seat looks you over appraisingly. “Silver.”

“Very good,” you nod, smiling appreciatively at your subordinate’s joke. “Now, everyone on their best behavior.”

A chorus of agreements is your response.

Several minutes later, the arrancar arrive in plain white outfits, along with Bambietta and a very uncertain-looking Candice Catnipp. The latter stares at you for several seconds as her companion takes a seat.

“Candi?” she asks. “Hey, you awake over there?”

“Yeah,” the blonde quincy nods in agreement, still staring at you. “Sure Bambi, sure.”

“Right.”

“Don’t stare,” Bambietta sighs. “Regardless of whatever comes through those doors.”

“I understand,” Candice agrees. “But I can only promise to try.”

“Of course,” you nod. “Inari, what can we expect?”

Your divine ‘mother’ aspect shrugs. “I haven’t seen either of them in so long that I cannot say for certain.”

“Well, then it will have to be a surprise.”

You move swiftly, catching the intruder’s fist with a calm stare. “If you wish to take that approach you must be quicker and stronger than Susano’o himself… Ohoyamakui-no-kimi.”

The newcomer smirks, a mountain of a man with broad shoulders and a shaved scalp, wearing the white robes of a lay monk. His eyes are carefully wrapped in clean white linens, with the character for ‘mountain’ marked where the bridge of his nose is underneath.

“I see your skills have not been overstated, Inari Riku-no-kimi,” he greets you. “Your responses are unlike what any other kami has managed.”

“You regularly greet kami by attacking them?” you ask with a smirk of your own.

“I find the most honest answers come when one is caught off their guard,” the kami of Hieizan explains. “And I appreciate honesty more than anything else.”

“I think we will get along quite well,” you tell him. “Welcome to my Division. These are my ranking officers, as well as representatives of the arrancar and quincy with whom we maintain close ties. They will be leading our efforts.”

“And what precisely are our efforts to consist of?” Ohoyamakui asks you.

You shake your head. “I would prefer to lay out the mission parameters all at once, so we are waiting for Shirayama-hime.”

“That makes sense,” Ohoyamakui agrees. “The second thing I appreciate most is when people deal with things in a direct manner.”

“Then I feel you would get along even better with Kusajishi Riku,” Inari chuckles. “Definitely less patience for subtleties.”

“I would disagree were you not substantively correct.”

“Here,” you offer, rising to your feet and adopting a high, empty-handed guard. “If you really feel the need to have a little fun, I am willing to oblige.”

“Too much bureaucracy so far today?” Ohoyamakui asks with a chuckle.

“You could say that,” you admit.

He leads with a charge that ends in a high kick, which you easily block with your forearm. A sweeping kick aimed at your head ends up going over you as you duck. He follows through with a sweeping movement of his arm that you block again, grabbing hold of his wrist and slipping inside his space to deliver three quick jabs with your left hand.

Ohoyamakui staggers backwards, but quickly recovers. Too quickly for you to really pursue that opening, and once he does so he launches an immediate second effort. Several strikes with his fists and elbows meet your raised guard, the effort completely wasted in the end as not one manages to get through.

“Your skills are commendable,” you admit. “A much better fight than I anticipated.”

“I could say the same,” Ohoyamakui concurs. “Whoever taught you must have been a truly spectacular martial artist.”

“She is,” you correct his use of the past tense. “Have you satisfied your curiosity?”

Ohoyamakui quickly takes his seat. “I have. And besides, I sense another visitor coming.”

Sure enough, the second of the mountain kami arrives just a few minutes later. Straight black hair like the feathers of a raven, and incredibly blue eyes. In fact her eyes are nothing but blue. On her back is a quiver, and the string of a bow runs across her chest which is already covered by a mune-ate.

“Hello,” she greets you, staring directly into your eyes. If you and Yoruichi weren’t used to using this same tactic to unnerve people who really weren’t expecting it, you might be put off.

But that’s not nearly enough to even give you pause.

“So, you would be our second guest,” you reply calmly, “Shirayama-hime, of Hakuzan?”

“I am,” she confirms, still maintaining eye contact.

>I can appreciate the effort, but you are wasting your time. Please take a seat.

“You know, I am getting the distinct impression that you are looking for a competition as well,” you muse, your tone playful. “Is that correct, oh kami of Hakuzan?”

The princess inclines her head in a polite gesture. “So you understand. That saves the trouble of explaining myself.”

“And what sort of contest are you looking for?” you press gently. “Am I to assume you wish to make the test one of archery?”

“You assume correctly,” Shirayama-hime replies with a subtle nod. “Would you be amenable?”

“My Third seat would likely be a better match,” you admit, “assuming she is willing to play your game.”

“I am,” Mirai replies. “But only after this meeting has been concluded.”

Shirayama-hime glances at you, apparently confused at this turn of events. “You allow your subordinates such leeway, even in answering the requests of a kami?”

You nod sternly. “I only seek to show them the same respect they have always shown me. They deserve no less than my full consideration.”

Shirayama-hime stares at you for several seconds, carefully appraising your words. Eventually she relents.

“Okay, then we will postpone that event for the time being,” she agrees, sitting calmly on her own cushion. “Now then, why is it that Ohoyamakui-no-kimi and I have been called here? Inari-denka, have you any insight?”

Inari shrugs before throwing the question back to you. “Inari Riku-no-kimi is the one you should be asking.”

“Well?” Shirayama-hime redirects her attention.

“You have been requested to back our attempts at locating Mimihagi,” you explain. “To our knowledge, the last remaining limb of the Soul King.”

The two kami’s expressions darken, before Ohoyamakui speaks. “So… a hunt, then.”

You nod in confirmation. “Yes.”

“How shall we proceed?” Shirayama-hime asks bluntly, getting straight to the business at hand.

>We will separate into teams, each of which will search a specific area.

“As it happens, we have a sample for you to examine,” you realize aloud. “Come along with me, there is something you need to see.”

“Wait, that’s it?” Kai interjects, staring at you in confusion.

You nod sagely. “Yes. Though I suppose we could take some time to finish our tea… Captain Ukitake is not going anywhere.”

After drinking a cup of tea each and eating the accompanying snacks, you make your way in an orderly procession towards Urahara’s Division, the grounds of the Shinigami Research and Development Institute. At the front desk, you meet a timid-looking young shinigami in one of the Institute’s labcoats, the one with little horns on his forehead… you don’t think you ever learned his name, or had the occasion to do so. But after explaining your objective you’re led down a long hallway to an elevator which drops you what feels like several stories, you’re finally led into a large and dimly-lit room.

The room has to be large to fit all of the monitoring equipment that is now hooked up to the two glass-fronted caskets that hold the remains of former Head Captain Yamamoto Genryūsai Shigekuni and former Captain Ukitake Jūshirō.

“Can we have some extra lights switched on?” you request of the labcoated shinigami, who quickly scurries to meet your request. The light level in the room soon rises slightly to an acceptable level, though still well below daylight.

“Thank you.”

“These are the remains of two Captains who have died in the line of duty, but whose bodies are being preserved due to the possibility of eventual revival,” you explain. “Probably due to the string of recent events, the SRDI has not been able to allocate the time and funds necessary to research that process in full, however it remains an eventual goal.

“Can you get a good sense for the less-burned of the two?”

Ohoyamakui looms over Ukitake’s technological casket and taps heavily on the window, though for a man that size you suppose that might be his attempt at a ‘light’ tap. The occupant inside, of course, shows neither annoyance at the disturbance nor gratitude at the restraint.

“Somewhat,” Ohoyamakui admits gruffly. “His reiatusu is very faint, practically nonexistant. But if I could get another sample, or view this sample more closely, this could serve.”

>See if you can have the casket opened, and if so what sort of risk it presents.
>Don’t even risk it. Take the two mountain deities to Jūshirō’s home.

“If we can find his zanpakuto, that might offer the additional sample you are looking for,” you offer calmly. “Officer, what has been done with former Captain Ukitake’s personal belongings?”

“I’d… really rather not say...” the man mutters, clearly cringing. “It’d start a huge fuss...”

Your stare is all the threat you need.

“… and so that is why we came here,” you finish your explanation. “We need to see Jūshirō’s sword so that we can complete the tracking assignment.”

Head Captain Kyōraku stares blankly at you. “So that’s why you barged into my office.”

You shake your head. “You may say ‘barged’, but I would say we were fairly polite given that there are three full-fledged kami among our number.”

The Head Captain exhales slowly, before rising wearily from the seat behind his desk.

“Follow me.”

He leads you down a hallway and into a nearby room, the door to which has no less than five locks. He quickly deals with these in order, and once he does so opens the door and flicks on a switch. The room lights up, and you can see that this room is far from ordinary.

There are perhaps two dozen swords, all in unique koshirae. Several you recognize immediately.

“This belonged to the previous Kenpachi,” you realize, examining one blade. Then you glance at the next one over. “And this… this belonged to Lord Ginrei. I thought the Kuchiki kept this?”

“All of the swords which formerly belonged to Captains are kept here,” Shunsui explains. “Even Suzumushi, over here. The rare exception is hereditary swords, like that of the Ise clan.”

“To prevent them from being stolen?” you guess.

Shunsui nods grimly. “Despite being a long shot, there are too many desperate enough for power that no Captain’s grave could remain undisturbed for long.”

“I see,” you nod in understanding. “I guess this would be the only way.”

Then you point Ohoyamakui and Shirayama-hime towards a specific sword. “This one belonged to Ukitake Jūshirō. Its name is Sōgyō no Kotowari.”

“Then we can use this,” Shirayama-hime declares.

“I will try to get his proverbial scent now as well,” you offer, focusing your formidable reiatsu sensing ability onto the blade of Sōgyō no Kotowari. “The more of us capable of tracking Mimihagi, the faster this will go.”

All of your focus is on the sword in front of you. Mostly it just feels like Jūshirō’s reiatsu, which is familiar to you. It’s slightly different however, since this is not the wielder but his zanpakuto. It typically takes a fairly advanced fighter to distinguish those two sources of reiatsu… but right now it’s fairly pointless. What you’re searching for isn’t a normal presence.

And after focusing on it for several minutes, you notice it: shinreiryoku, in residual amounts but thoroughly covering the zanpakuto to the point that it’s totally impregnated into the silk handle wrappings.

“I have isolated the shinreiryoku of Mimihagi,” you declare. “Now that I know what to look for it seems painfully obvious.”

“That still has reiatsu in it?” Rangiku asks you quietly. “So… does that mean...”

You shake your head. “I do not know. I cannot even say if it would be like I lost Tenkotsuki, or worse, because I am not familiar with Captain Ukitake’s original condition.”

“But it is not a discouraging fact.”

“Now, I believe it is time to hunt,” Shirayama-hime declares, drawing her bow. “Shall we get started?”

You nod quietly. “Yes, I believe I agree.”
