The Lighthouse War is over, but conflict still continues.

With Erusea's defeat at the hands of the Osean Federation and the International United Nations, the imperial nation has splintered into a confusing mess of separatists, freedom fighters, warlords, rogue military factions, and those seeking to profit from the chaos. Worse, Erusea's many automated drone factories still remain intact, waiting for new masters to come to claim them.

The Usean continent remains in crisis, and it's up to a new generation of pilots to face this next generation threat...

You are MILLY, the "Red Tail", a Belkan Air Force pilot fighting for the IUN!

Spending the night at the refugee camp wasn't all that bad, now that you thought about it. They were all exceedingly nice, despite the fact they could tell you were Belkan from your flightsuit and plane markings. Apparently, there were a couple Belkans mixed among the refugees that really helped them all out. Like, you didn't even have to worry about leaving your Hornet unsupervised. Mead had made it clear to everyone your plane was off limits, and everybody seemed to respect her enough to listen.

Come morning, and the IUN managed to truck over a tanker to get your Hornet fueled up so you could make the short hop to Selatapura Air Base, where the IUN had set up their local headquarters. However, as you boarded your Hornet, you did recall seeing what looked to be an old wheelchair bound man staring at your plane. But before you could get a better look at him, he was quickly carted away by a pair of young girls.

Anyways, back to the present, it was now your first official day on the job as an IUN pilot, and you were face to face with a very cross looking Bandit...

"Yeah, I know that I kinda screwed up there." You sigh. "Got a little too eager to get that drone in a head on."

You're expecting a harsh rebuke from Bandit, but he merely nods his head.

"It's good you recognized how you could do better. That's all I can ask for." He says calmly.

Jeez, Bandit was always like this...

W-well, that was one of the things that made him kinda cool, after all! He was always pretty laid back and understanding.

In fact, you don't ever recall him shouting or even raising his voice.

"Anyways, you missed the welcome party, so you'll have to pretty much fly by ear here." Bandit continues. "First things first, the IUN is assigning two more pilots to our squadron."

"What? Really?" You blink.

"Yeah, two foreigners." Bandit confirms.

"Can they even do that?" You blink. "We're a Belkan squadron, after all."

"Apparently." Bandit shrugs. "IUN rules trump ours, after all."

"Well, I guess we can go meet our new arrivals." You sigh. "Hopefully they're not total nuggets."

"If that's the case, we'll just have to bring them up to speed." Bandit gives a slight grin.

"Ugh." You roll your eyes jokingly as the two of you head out to the airstrip.

"Hm, looks like that's the first of them." Bandit points down at the end of the base's main runway, where you could see the fuzzy outline of a plane coming in for a landing.

You squint your eyes, trying to get a better look. Judging from what you remembered from visual recognition training, you were pretty sure you were looking at...

As the plane gets closer, you recognize it as a Gripen with its signature delta wings and almost criminally tiny size. The fighter touches down without issue and taxis off to the side, pulling up alongside your and Bandit's Hornets. The canopy then rises up and the pilot scrambles out, apparently having a bit of trouble working their way down the ladder. The pilot then catches sigh of you and Bandit and starts jogging over.

And that's when you could tell the pilot as a girl, and like her plane, was criminally tiny. You swear she had to be almost a full head shorter than you were! The pilot then stops and salutes the both of you, before remembering her helmet was still on as her hand chops straight into it. It's another panicked little scramble as she pulls her helmet off, revealing a head of blonde hair and a pair of twintails. Combined with her small stature, she pretty much looked like a kid!

"F-flight officer Vicky Alling of the Nordennavic Royal Air Force report for duty!" She manages to utter. "I presume you're from Raven Squadron?"

"That's right." Bandit casually returns the salute. "I'm the leader of this unit. You can call me bandit. This one here is Milly, or can her Red Tail or Red for short."

"O-oh, um, it's nice to meet you um..." Vicky glances at you nervously, as if unsure which name to refer to you by.

"Honestly, I've heard weirder." You shrug. "Still, I'm kinda curious how you got it."

"W-well, it's a long story-" Vicky starts but is interrupted by a loud shriek of a low flying jet.

You instinctively turn your head skywards just in time to see an F-2 flying low and fast over the runway before circling around. Whoever the pilot was, they were definitely extremely sure of themselves.

Of course, you could see a look of mild disapproval on Bandit's face. He didn't like showboating stunts like that.

As the F-2 lands, you notice that there was a Selatapuran roundel painted on it. Looks like whoever the pilot was, they were a local. The F-2 touches down and taxis to park next to Vicky's Gripen, and the canopy pops open. The pilot doesn't even wait for the ladder to be rolled up to her plane, instead simply dropping down and landing on the tarmac with practiced grace.

However, there was also something else you noticed.

The pilot was holding a sheathed sword in their hands.

You just stare blankly as the pilot makes their way toward your little group, their walk showing a combination of both discipline and a sort of self assurance that wasn't quite smug, but definitely oozed confidence.

Finally, the pilot removes their helmet, revealing that it was yet another girl. This time with long, dark hair. Just like her body language, her smile was just nothing but self confidence.

"Flight Officer Misono Takakura reporting for duty!" She says as she snaps to attention and salutes, her sword now clipped to her belt.

"Welcome to Raven Squadron." Bandit nods, still a bit wary. "I'm Bandit, the squadron lead. These here will be your wingmates, Milly and Vicky."

"It is nice to meet you all!" Misono says as she bows to both you and Vicky.

"Hey there." You hold out your hand and Misono gladly shakes it. "I'm Milly, though my callsign is Red Tail in the air."

"And I'm Vicky!" Vicky adds. "Callsign Swordfish!"

"Ah, well, mine ended up being 'Knives'." Misono replies happily.

Man, you really wonder how she ended up getting that callsign. Such a mystery.

"All right, kids, we really should be going if we want to make that briefing." Bandit coughs to get your attention. "So let's wrap things up and get moving."

"Of course." Misono nods and strides up to take position right behind and to the side of Bandit.

"R-right!" Vicky nods as well, but her pace is slower, as she seems more stay at the back.

You sort of try to process what you've seen. While you werent' too sure of their piloting prowess just yet, you could somewhat tell that Vicky was the cautious, if not outright timid, type. Misono, on the other hand, seemed to be the typical hotshot fighter jock, with the whole weird sword thing added on as a bonus.

Yeah, you were almost a hundred percent sure the IUN just dumped a couple of problem pilots onto your squadron to make you babysit them or something.

Regardless, you had all reached the briefing room, which was packed with pilots from pretty much all over the place, though you were wary that the majority of them were Osean. Since your squadron was one of the last to arrive, you had to make do with what few seats were left at the very back. As a result, you could barely see the projector screen, while Vicky had the biggest struggle.

"Thank you all for coming." An officer at the very front of the room says, standing right under the projector screen. "I am Commander Downes, the acting commander in chief for all IUN forces in the Usean theater of operations."

The projector screen then flickers as it shows a map of the Usean continent.

"I'm going to frank here." Commander Downes says grimly. "The Lighthouse War may be over, but it left behind a hell of a mess for us to clean up."

Suddenly, red dots and splotches begin popping up all over the map of the continent, mostly centered around Erusea but they were all over the place.

"With the decimation of Erusean, Osean, IUN, and local military forces, the rule of law and order has effectively broken down." Commander Downes continues. "Over a dozen autonomous regions have declared independence from Erusea, with Erusea attempting to stamp down on all signs of rebellion. Meanwhile, rogue warlords and generals are setting up their own fiefdoms and states, and even going so far as to raid IUN member nations."

Suddenly, there's numerous camera feeds of soldiers and vehicles moving and fighting. Explosions and cities in flames. None of it looked nice at all.

"And finally, there is the issue of enforcing the UCV and AI Restriction Act, which bans the use and research of unmanned combat vehicles and autonomous artificial intelligence." Commander Downes gives everybody a hard stare. "While Erusea was defeated, many of their automated drone factories remain intact and operational, making them prime targets to be seized by anybody who wants to exploit them. It will be the IUN's responsibility to seize and dismantle every drone factory to prevent their use."

There's a lot of murmuring and whispers among he gathered pilots. Erusean drones had caused a lot of problems during the war, causing a great deal of casualties as well as almost growing beyond the control of their creators. They certainly weren't threats that could be easily trifled with.

"As you can see, you all have your work cut out for you." Commander Downes concludes. "In the coming days, you will be given your assignments. Be prepared to mobilize on short notice. That is all. Dismissed."

With that, the pilots get up and begin to disperse.

"Ah, this is so very exiting!" Misono grins. "It sounds like this will be a great challenge!"

"Does that mean we'll have to fight UCAVs?" Vicky fidgets.

"Sounds like it's just something that comes with the job." You shrug.

"I-I guess." Vicky gulps, her concerns not really put at ease at all.

"Red, I've got some business to take care of with the Commander." Bandit tells you. "Can I ask you to keep an eye on the new additions? I don't want them wandering off and getting lost or or something."

"Yeah, sure, I guess." You shrug.

"Good. Just don't get into any trouble." Bandit cautions as he heads off to talk to Commander Downes.

"Hm? Ah, yes I am." Misono nods. "Why do you ask?"

"Well, I was just wondering if there was anything interesting to do on this base." You shrug. "Gotta find a way to pass the time, right?"

"Hmmm, well..." Misono pauses. "The simulator room is always a popular spot for pilots to test their skills.Or we could had over to the main hangar to see what planes the other squadrons are using. And... oh! There's a officer's club here that's a popular spot for the pilots to rest and relax!"

"Wow, this base has everything, huh? Vicky marvels.

"Hm, some sims sounds fun." You grin. "At least it sounds like a good way to pass the time."

"Excellent!" Misono motions for you to follow her. "It's just this way!"

Quickly enough, Misono leads you and Vicky to a large room filled with black simulator pods, which were meant to try and represent an actual plane without being the real thing. You noticed some pilots already present, taking advantage of the facilities.

"Looks quite busy..." Vicky observes.

"So, in the simulator hall, you have the option of facing off against waves of AI enemies, or you can to head to head with another pilot!" Misono explains. "Which one strikes your fancy?"

You pick one of the simulator pods and drop in. The door seals, briefly bathing you in darkness before the simulator screen winks on. As you strap yourself into the seat, the first thing that appears on screen is a prompt asking you what plane to fly.

You sort of wonder. This pod was networked with the others, meaning it was possible to engage in adversarial simulations against another human, rather than a preprogrammed AI.

Hmmm, well, you didn't necessarily want to pick something you weren't too familiar with. You'd feel more comfortable with something you had some experience with. After all, this was going to be an adversarial match, not just a simple training run.

Your mind runs through the possibilities. The F-16 was the basic fighter all Belkan pilots learned the ropes with first. While not particularly large or fast, it was extremely nimble.

There was the F-18C/D and the larger F-18E/F variants. They were fairly solid, capable planes.

And there was that one time where you were briefly able to fly a Su-33. It was pretty nice being able to fly a heavy fighter that was also terrifyingly nimble for its size...

You decide to roll with the Su-33. It felt nice to be at the helm of a large heavy fighter.

However, as you checked the loadout, you noticed that it was locked to just guns and basic missiles. Guess that was just part of the simulation's ruleset.

With your choice locked in, the screen switches to an electronic blue sky, with the words SIMULATION BEGIN flashing to let you know what was going on.

However, you didn't immediately know where your opponent was. You glance at your radar, but there's no apparent contact yet. Maybe they weren't range?

Or worse, your opponent was flying a stealth plane. Those were some real bastards to deal with.

You quickly consider your options. Going high would make you easier to detect, but that was also where the Su-33's strengths were the most apparent. Your other option was to hug low on the ground to avoid radar spotting and try to hit them from below, though you'd be starting from a disadvantage energywise.

All the while, you're keeping a close eye on your radar and missile warning indicator, looking for any sign of your opponent.

You see a Typhoon climbing rapidly to meet you. Your missile warning wasn't going off, so it wasn't in weapons range just yet. You had the height advantage, so you would have the advantage here. You could just hold your current altitude and fire missiles down on the Typhoon, though that wouldn't stop the Typhoon from being able to sling missiles back at you. Or you can dive down and meet it up close in a dogfight, with you having the energy advantage...

Given what you remember about the specs for a Typhoon, it was best that you didn't get into a protracted fight with it in a Su-33. Well, not like you were going to take the pussy option, anyways. You had a chance to knock it down right now and you were going to take it!

You nose your Su-33 down directly at the climbing Typhoon. Your radar guided gunsight detects the incoming target and your gun targeting crosshairs wink on your HUD, lining up right over the climbing fighter...

The Typhoon sees what you're attempting and performs a snap roll to get out of your line of fire, but isn't quite fast enough. You see solid cannon hits on the left wing and tailfin, but it's not lethal damage as the Typhoon converts its roll into a controlled dive, passing right under you.

Your mind immediately snaps to possible countermaneuvers. You could perform a rapid high-G loop to quickly get your nose back onto the Typhoon, but it would kill your airspeed, so if you didn't get it right then, the initiative would pass to the Typhoon.

Or you could perform a standard turn to re-engage, though the Typhoon was still going to pick up some distance in that case.

"Yeah, that's me." You nod with a grin.

"My name's Alanna." The pilot introduces herself. "That was some good fly-"

However, Alanna pauses mid sentence, and you notice that she's staring at the patches on your shoulder. Namely, the patch of the Belkan flag denoting your national origin.

Well, you knew that people had a low opinion of Belkans, but that didn't explain why Alanna would be pausing like that-

"So uh, basically, a few decades ago, waaaaay before any of our times, my home nation of Belka got kinda broken up when a bunch of nations declared independence. Aaaaaand there were quite a lot of us that weren't happy about that, so we started a war to bring them all back into the fold."

"Like the Eruseans." Misono says rather darkly.

Ah shit, now you remember that Selatapura was a city-state that had declared independence from Erusea, and was briefly reoccupied during the Lighthouse War.

Damn this was getting complicated fast.

"Like I said, it was all a long time ago." You sigh. "And we ended up losing that war anyways, which resulted in us losing even MORE territory, so it's not like we got off lightly or anything."

"Hm..." Misono cross her arms, but then smiles. "Well, you showed a fine warrior spirit so far, so I think I'll put my trust in you so far."

You turn to Vicky, who blinks in surprise.

"W-well, Nordennvannic is a neutral nation, so I don't really have an opinion on you or Belka in any way!" She says quickly.

We'd need some of those super secret Belkan military rations that Karla found in order to even open up a discussion.

"I'd really like a drink now." You sigh, suddenly feeling very tired and very down. Frankly, it's been a very exhausting day.

"Oh, would you like us to accompany you?" Misono asks.

"Yeah, you could never be too careful!" Vicky cautions.

>Sure I could use the company.
>Nah I'd rather be alone right now.

"Sure, I could use the company." You nod. "Misono, can you lead the way?"

"Gladly!" Misono nods with a smile as she leads you out into the hall.

The club was a pretty low key place, being a bit dimly lit. Like most clubs, there consisted of a large, central bar, with the edges of the room lined with more private booths for groups. You immediately take a seat at the bar, with Misono and Vicky flanking you. You take a look around and see that there wasn't anybody around. Maybe it was a bad hour? Or maybe the IUN pilots were bigger wusses than you thought.

"What are you looking for?" The bartender asks.

"U-um, just a cherry soda for me!" Vicky stammers.

"Sake, of course." Misono says with a smile.

Dang, that was pretty hardcore, you had to admit.

"Just give me a cold one." You say. You didn't really want to go overboard in a new base, especially with the specter of Bandit hovering over your shoulder.

The bartender swiftly fulfills your orders, sliding an ice cold bottle of Emmerian beer in front of you. Eh, beggars can't be choosers, you guess.

"So, um, Milly, do you mind if I ask you something?" Vicky asks as she glances at you, her glass clutched in both of her hands."

"Sure, go ahead." You answer as you take a pull from your bottle.

"How did you get 'Red Tail' as your callsign?" Vicky asks. "B-but you don't have to answer if you don't want to!"

>Well, it was pretty badass...
>Funny story about that...

"Heh, funny story about that..." You chuckle a bit. "So, a lot of people assume that callsign came from my hair color, which is only partly true. The real reason is a lot more silly."

"Oh?" Misono raises an eyebrow.

"Really?" Vicky gasps.

"Yep." You take another pull from your beer bottle to build up some more confidence. "Anyways, it was still early in my piloting days, barely out of boot. It was during a training flight and I was being put through my paces by Bandit to get a judge of what I was capable of."

You remember that day vividly. You were in one of the the force's older F-16's, a secondhand Osean bird converted into a trainer craft since its fighting days were long beyond it.

"So, anyways, the F-16 I was flying was an ancient piece of junk, and I guess nobody bothered to inspect the engine, so when I'm coming in for my landing approach, the engine just fucking catches fire!"

Vicky gasps loudly and looks like she's about to faint.

"So the ATC and Bandit are screaming at me to punch out, but I, like an idiot, was confident I could set the bird down. I mean, I was already on my landing approach anyways, right? Unfortunately, the moment I touch down, the land gear gives out so my bird is just skidding across the pavement with a flaming engine belching fire and brimstone behind it!"

"A red tail." Misono concludes.

"Yep! That's the first thing Bandit seemed to think when he saw the whole thing." You laugh. "But uh, besides it looking cool, it also sorta damaged the runway, leaving this huuuuuuuuuge scorch mark on the pavement. If you squint real hard at it nowadays, you can still see it!"

"That's quite the story." Misono nods.

"I'm just glad you're okay!" Vicky wails.

However, before you can ask them to return the favor and tell you about their own callsigns, Bandit suddenly makes his entrance and takes a seat next to your group.

"Vodka." He says simply before glancing at you. "It's going to be a long day for all of us tomorrow."

Oh boy, that was certainly a bit ominous...

>And that's it for tonight! The next thread will be on Friday, so don't miss it!

Any ideas for Milly's custom emblem or paintjob?
>>
>>3597128
Well, in honor of her callsign I believe the tail fin(s) should be painted red irrespective of how the rest of the plane ends up.
>>
>>3597128
Maybe an emblem that has hair that winds up into a red-yellow flaming ponytail. So that could be the plume of a helmet, or some mythical creature's hair/fur.
>>
Oh shit, Ace Combat Quest sequel!

Will Milly bag a bandit husbando? or will she go the route of the /u/bote?

Also, nice to see you again Merc! I'm just dropping by.

Speaking of paintjobs, only now do I realize that AC7 doesn't have a whole lot of custom paint jobs for the cast.

I wonder if there's a pilot who had their plane painted their plane an eyesore neon rainbow...
