Formerly the PVP thread?

Freelancers is a tactical combat game where each player controls their own character in battle against xeno scum. Clad yourself in powered armor, take up your gun and blade, and join the fight to reclaim your homeworld.

"Alright, I'm gonna try and bait the Overwatch off of that Priest." Dirtnap relayed over the red comms, spinning away from the low wall and raising his shield as he moved towards the southern boarding party. The running lights in his armor burned bright as his nanomachines poured their charge into him, nerves tingling as he dashed through the open space between cover.

"You eggsucking scale-heads look thirsty," he called out, lifting the shotgun with one hand and bracing the stock against his shoulder as he leaned his shield against a nearby bit of cover, "Have a little fresh-squeezed acid!" the shotgun bucked against him as he pulled the trigger, barrel raising up as he fired a solid slug at one of the Raiders, an orange nimbus surrounding the shell cutting a trail of light through the air. On impact, it exploded into a smoldering green goo, hissing streams of imbued buckshot spanging off of the light armor of the raider to pepper his oversized chaplain.

"I -- err -- can't rightly say, ma'am. Shooting things is mostly what Freelancers do. That Hunter fella seems to have the right idea, he avoided slashing it. Maybe he can disable it. That is, unless ..."

The android announcer winces, along with everyone else in the control booth. "Unless that happens! Ouch! Let's hope for his sake the shielder priests are still on the job ..."

[YEEEES!] The dragonpriest bellows in triumph, his spear pierced all the way through Smokes, dripping red with human blood. The Scav withdraws his weapon and raises it, exulting in glory. [I have done it! The Dragonslayer falls! My spear has avenged the great Dragon! Now, brothers, let us -- wait, what? Huh?!] Smokes is clearly still alive as the transmat begins. The Hunter flips off the Scavs as he vanishes from the combat zone. The aliens howl in frustration at having their vengeance snatched out of their hands.

Smokes went down quickly to the hail of fire that he received from the Scavs, but with the priest transmats, it was going to be fine. One of the remaining Raider's shot bounced harmlessly off the hardened armour he was wearing. Taking a quick movement, passing activating the phase boots just so that he didn't have to walk around, Dozer made his way through next to the bomb.

Dirtnap took a deep breath. Once upon a time, when he'd been running a small crew, he'd read a book on management styles. He hadn't truly internalized most of it, but there was one seed that had managed to put down roots. As purple particles and shrapnel arched through the air, he felt it was time to deploy this dread knowledge, invoking the dark managerial arts of the Criticism Sandwich.

"Dawn! You killed a bunch of Scavs with one move, good job!" he called, waving at the irradiated form of one of Red Team's Priests.

"Still, I think it would be best if you didn't BLOW UP ANY MORE BOMBS, you psycho!" he added, hopping up on the low cover and shaking his shield at her.

"Congrats on surviving though. Way to deny them that point, someone might learn from your example." he finished, flashing a thumbs up and a quick tilt of his head that suggested he was winking underneath his helmet.

Good job, Dirtnap. Display those fledgling leadership chops in front of the clergy; maybe one day someone'll be crazy or bereft of options enough to consider you for the top spot!

Dirtnap kicked off from the wall, pivoting in the air and tossing his shield down before landing on it and grinding across the low cover between him and the nearest anomaly. He kickflipped it as he reached the end of the cover, landing with his back against the scoring pillar and catching the shield in his offhand as it came down.

"Commin' through!" Dirtnap called rushing the Dragon Priest on the central point. As the Priest swung his ion lance at the oncomming Freelancer, Dirtnap dropped to his knees, sliding over the strobing panel of the central scoring zone until he came to a stop in front of the pulsating violet bomb.

"Pft, I see the design of these hasn't changed much since the last time I saw one." he scoffed, retracting his shield so he could tear an access panel off and punch his fist inside. When he ripped out a handful of components, the bomb went dark and cold.

Rolling away from the bomb, he brought his shotgun up as he got back to his feet, the boom of his shotgot sounding off as he dashed back away from the Dragon Priest.

"Nanites are cold, I'm out of charge!" he called out.

Dozer was amazed at how easy it was to defuse the bomb. As more shifted, in, he getting ready to move when the four remaining Raiders all grouped around him. As one moved to strike him, his Hardlight projected image took the blow instead. Another barely piercing his armour to scrap the barrier he had from his vest. The others harmlessly scrapped against the hardened Titan plating that the humans had given him.

"I love the smell of thermal paste in the morning!" Dozer snorts as the Scavs around him catch ablaze, the charged vest on Dozer keeping him from lighting up. "Don't worry about me. I'll deal with these guys soon enough. Get the other bombs!"

"I mean, I don't know about you, but I'd survive a crash from orbit. A Brute punches harder than that."

"Of course we'd survive, you idiot, but we'd lose the station. It's not just some random hollowed-out weathersat, you know, we actually DO things here when there aren't arena matches. And more importantly, if the station DID experience total propulsion failure and crash into the planet, why, it would be EMBARASSING."

"Then let's hope those dingbats--" The junior priest pauses, suddenly conscious that the Freelancer company contains its own priests who might have the encryption skills to be listening in, then continues: "I mean those brave, very brave heroes out there, are able to keep it up for the last two bombs."

"Alright boys, it's been fun, but you're starting to get annoying." Dozer said as he kicked himself free from the paired Raiders. "At least you made the match interesting."

"Agh...fuck." Dirtnap muttered, squinting against the bright light, "... Guessing that last stunt didn't go as planned." he groaned, raising a hand to try and block the white light pouring through his eyelids. He worked his tongue in his mouth, tasting copper as he ran his tongue along his teeth, there was a tightness to his skin that he usually associated with being burned. Ah, the big fucker must've skewered him.

Someone grabbed his wrist and pushed his arm back down to the table, directing his gaze to the side. White vestments draped over a gravity suit met his gaze, Dirtnap wasn't conversant enough in the Orbital Choir to read her ranks, but the golden face shield reminded him of Dawn, and that was enough to reassure him that she was a medic.

"Well now, this don't look like The Bad Place." he said with a smirk, letting his eye roam a bit. That got him a chuckle in response.

"I wouldn't be so quick to judge." same the response, as she picked up something that looked like a heavy pistol, except that when she thumbed the safety a needle about as big around as his finger jutted out of the barrel. "The road to redemption is rarely pleasant, Mr. Trails." She jammed the gun in between his ribs, injecting quick-acting biofoam into his chest cavity. Pale, faux skin began to knit itself together, soaking up internal bleeding, restoring burned flesh, and reconnecting severed tissues. A miracle of techno-science ... if one could bear the antiseptic burn that it came with. It felt like someone had dropped a hot coal down the front of his armor, and Dirtnap gripped the edges of the table to keep from crying out.

"Acolyte," the attending physician called, turning away from him, the tears in his eyes following the curve from he ribs to her hips as she did so, grinding teeth together as that little bit of heaven and hell blended together in the moment, "Begin the power transfer to Mr. Trails's nanomachines. We must, after all, return him to his holy work."

Metal prongs jabbed into his neck, and Dirtnap *squeaked* as a needle drilled into his spine, his nostrils flaring behind his helmet. As the attending physician stepped away from the light, the polarization turned down and he caught a glimpse of the face behind the helmet. The anticipatory gleam in her eyes, looming over a smile that was as polite as it was plastic. When the electricity slammed into his body, making him jutter and shake as white sparks danced in his eyes, he laughed in spite of himself.

He laughed because he saw her tongue part those full red lips before her teeth bit into her bottom lips. The Satellites sure did like to keep him in interesting company. Praise be to them.

The last bombs are disarmed by Einherjar-3 and Smokes. With no extra objectives and no way to be killed, the Freelancers are unhindered in unleashing their full firepower into smashing aliens. The few remaining Scavs are backed up against their breach points or fried in the still-growing death zone, until there's none left standing, and soon after that, none left twitching. The xenos came hoping for vengeance in a swift and brutal raid against a defenseless medical station. Instead they stumbled into the middle of a gang of unkillable Freelancers. No sympathy for the devil.

There's a long moment of worry for the combatants when the yellow walls of doom seem like they might not stop coming. Everyone clusters near the center of the arena, watching the slow advance of the force fields and thinking this would be an ignominious end after all they've been through. But the walls stop in time.
